from
Carbon
Wood burning stoves can cause lethal carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a highly toxic and poisonous gas. It is colorless, odorless and tasteless so it is hard to detect. Carbon monoxide is harmful when breathed because it displaces oxygen in the blood and deprives the heart, brain and other vital organs of clean oxygen. Large amounts of CO can overcome a person in minutes without warning, causing loss of consciousness and suffocation. About 40 people die in a year across England and Wales from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning from a variety of sources.

The DIRECTORY March 2017
Because of this silent danger, it is important to be aware of prevention methods, detection, and signs and symptoms of CO poisoning to lessen the chances of the gas being present.
To Prevent CO Poisoning, You Should: • • •
Ventilate any areas where CO may be accumulating. Only use home and workplace-approved heating equipment. Use CO detectors and make sure they are proper installed.
Our Alarm systems offer professional solutions with CO detectors and smoke alarm. They warn you and your neighborhood in case of CO in a very early stage. This is lifesaving. LIVE TO LOVE THE ROAD The desert has no doors.
We head for a new destination in the Sahara desert. We follow tracks on the flat desert gravel all day with our camel caravan. A quiet walk, an almost silent walk like we are almost not here. Something I cannot see is pulling me, wanting to show me something. I cannot see it, but I know its there. After many cups of tea around the fire that night, we suddenly hear footsteps arriving from a far. Almost like a whisper from a time passed and a hallucination. In the light of the fire, I can see a man guiding a camel towards us. The doorbell sounds as our camels roar into the open sky. The old man joins us and the hospitality in how he is received by our caravan teaches me a lesson - the desert has no doors. Around the fire, we continue drinking tea, one more cup and then one more. The conversation starts with how are you, what tribe, family are you? The conversation continues, lots of laughter, singing and I feel the harmony of the conversation by following the movements of the hands. I learn that this is the most relaxing time of the day in Sahara. We share our tagine and our flat bread as one family sitting around the fire. I am quiet for a long time, almost no words. I listen to the Berber melody. I follow the harmony with my heart and sound with eyes recording. This is the world I want to live in. This is how I want to live my life. No doors, simply harmony together. Follow my Moroccan tracks during 2017. Victoria AhlÊn, founder of Vilostrada, she is an expert Moroccan artisana buyer, and founder of the Vilostrada Foundation where they build the world´s greatest school in 20017 with the nomads in Tanmirt, Sahara.

Currency News How can you assess your best route to transfer money to or from Spain? When it comes to transferring money overseas, making the right decision starts by asking the right questions before considering the options available on the market. It’s a simple process that could help you save considerable amount of money on all your transfers. Be prepared By assessing your personal requirements, you will be in the best position to later discuss them with a currency specialist like Currencies Direct. Ask yourself the following questions: • Why are you transferring funds? For a property purchase, a foreign pension, to pay bills or make mortgage payments? • How often will you need to transfer funds? Will it be a one-off transfer or regular payments? • When you will need the funds? Is the money needed at a specific date? How much time and flexibility do you have? • Are there any other specific criteria relating to your own personal circumstances? Consider your options Next step is the choice of the service provider. Traditional high-street banks often offer poor exchange rates and tend to charge commission so taking that route could actually cost you a lot more money. Whereas alternatively, currency transfer specialists, like Currencies Direct, provide a tailored service and highly competitive rates. You will then have to decide the type of transfer that you will go for. This is where the initial assessment and the guidance provided by the currency experts will help you to find the service most adapted to your needs, as well as the right time to transfer. For more information please contact Melanie Radford at Currencies Direct.

gardening tips Tips for your garden in March Spring arrives It´s time to get busy at the garden; preparing seed beds, sowing seed, cutting back winter shrubs,.. Here´s your March gardening list of advices: •
Ideal flowers you should be sowing this month are: lobelia, felicia, petunias, geraneos, gaura, dimorphoteca, lantanas, alisum, tajete, argirantemum
•
Feed trees, shrubs and hedges with a slow-release fertilizer by lightly forcing it into the soil surface.
•
Use liquid fertilizer for potted plants, mix with water and water the plants once a week or once every 15 days.
•
Plant out any forced flower bulbs in the garden such a gladiolus, Lilies, ranunculus, into beds, borders and containers.
•
Now is time to plant herbaceous perennials. Lift and divide established perennial plants now to improve their vigour and create new plants for your garden.
•
Roses should be fed with a special roses feed or a balanced fertilizer at they come into growth.
•
Start watering your plants more frequently as the temperature will be hotter from now.
•
At this time of year, the lawn is actively growing and requires feeding, most-killing, weeding and regular mowing. Spring is also suitable time to over-seed sparse

THE BENFITS OF HAVING A SPANISH WILL No matter what kind of assets you have in mind, it is strongly advised that you have a Spanish will. Bank accounts, property, shares and cars are just a few of the assets that should Why is it important to have a Spanish will? • • •
• •
•
You decide who will receive your Spanish assets You can mitigate Spanish Inheritance Tax If you are a citizen of the European Union, you can decide to have your native country’s apply when distributing the assets of your Spanish estate. Under Spanish law, two thirds of assets must go to children while just a third can be distributed freely. If you chose to apply English law, you could leave all of their Spanish assets to their spouse if you so choose. A Spanish will makes it quicker and more affordable for your heirs to manage your Spanish estate upon your passing If you don’t have a Spanish will, it can lead to delays in accessing the money in the bank account of the deceased of when selling a Spanish property. Also, administrative costs for handling a Spanish estate are more expensive when you don’t have a Spanish will. If you have assets in other jurisdictions, ensure that your Spanish will works with other wills you may have. It is also important you are careful not to revoke them when they are updated.
Signing a Spanish will is a straight forward exercise. Decide how you want to distribute your Spanish assets and provide us with the instructions. We will then prepare a draft of you Spanish will and, with your approval, we will arrange to have it signed before a notary in Spain or your home country. Contact the My Lawyer in Spain team for a free consultation via phone on (+34) 951 203 094 or by email at enquiries@mylawyerinspain.com.

LAWYERS (ABOGADOS) Town Halls to repay taxes to property sellers A decision of the Malaga administrative courts has set a precedent for thousands of vendors who sold their properties for less than the purchase price. The local Town Hall tax – plusvalía – has been charged on all property sales, inheritances and donations for many years. In some cases the tax has been tens of thousands. This is despite the fact that the property owner may have made a loss on the sale, particularly on properties bought in the property boom and sold after the crash in 2008. This court ruling mirrors other regional court decisions in Madrid, Catalonia, Valencia and Rioja. The reasoning of the Judge is that the plusvalía - whose full title is Impuesto sobre el Incremento del valor de los terrenos de naturaleza urbana – is implicitly a tax on an increase in value. Since the beginning of the crisis many people have sold at a loss so a tax referring to “an increase in value” is inherently unjustifiable. Future decisions, where the amount is more than 30,000 euros, could be appealed to a higher court. Interest will also be payable on the amount to be repaid by the Town Hall. If you have paid this tax on a sale at a loss, on an inheritance or on a donation, you may be able to make a claim in the courts for the return of monies paid. You will need copies of the deeds and evidence the tax has been paid. For more information please call us on 952 527014 or contact us on info@decottalaw.net. We have tax and property experts who can advise you on your particular case. 24

Salads
These are main part of the spanish diet. Normally they are served as a first course so beware if you order one with your main course it may come as a starter. There are many different salads but most restaurants do ensalada de la casa, salad of the house, this normally has lettuce, onion, tomato, white asparagus, grated carrot. If you want more than that you need ask for eg. Tuna (Atun), Boiled Egg (huevo cocido), For different salads there are such as red pepper salad, ensalada mariscos (seafood salad). As spanish tend to put their vegetables into stews and not serve fresh or individual, they eat a lot of salad products. OUT AND ABOUT
Photograph by Rob Bell Photography
out and about in PERIANA an area which lays claim to a further 14 hamlets, including beautiful Moya and El Cañuelo, both home to a relatively large British population. Of a population of 3,400 people living in Periana and its surrounding area, around 15 per cent is northern European.
Eventually a deal was made to merge the two names to give the town its name – ‘perei’ and ‘ana.’ The town’s coat of arms bears the words ‘ni Pereiro ni Santana,’ meaning ‘neither Pereiro nor Santana. However, it is worth noting that ’ana’ meant ‘place name’ in Roman times.
History Legend has it that Periana got its name from two feuding families, both of whom wanted the village to The town of Periana is the be named after them; The administrative centre of Pereiro and Santana familes.
Regardless of how the town acquired its name, what is certain is that there was a natural spring on the site of the fountain in Plaza de la Fuente, where farmers brought their cattle to drink. Gradually people started to settle there
At 500 metres above sea level, pretty Periana proudly overlooks the Viñuela reservoir and offers residents and visitors alike some of the most stunning views in the Axarquía. A great time to visit the small town is towards the end of winter and early spring when the almond blossom is out and the journey along the A7204 is picture postcardesque.

and the place grew as a town. There is evidence of Islamic settlers in the area, with the ruins of a mosque (mezquita) in the hamlet of Marchamona, to the north of the town. On Christmas day in 1884 a huge earthquake devastated large parts of Andalusia and in Periana it left 58 people dead. Survivors tried to flee to neighbouring towns, only to find that the roads had been cut off and the church, town hall and police station were also destroyed. From 28th August 1922 until 12th May 1960 the Malaga to Zafaraya train stopped just outside Periana; the only station between Vélez-Málaga and its final destination. The old station building can be found in the town centre. Periana is probably best known for its olive oil (Aceite Periana). The town celebrates its ‘liquid gold’ every year on the Sunday after Easter with the ‘Día del Aceite Verdial’ (will take place on Sunday 23rd April 2017). The day includes olive oil tastings along with local ‘Verdiales’ music; traditional music which takes its name from the verdial oil of the area. Other places of interest in Periana The Lavadero de la Cruz – the old town laundry area, where women would meet to do their washing and chat. Mirador – on the Plaza de la Lomilleja - offering stunning views of the Guaro river and Viñuela reservoir. Baños de Vilo – situated approximately 2.5 kilometres to the north pf Periana, is the tiny hamlet of Baños de Vilo, where during the 18th and 19th Centuries the Balneario, or baths, were among Andalusia’s most frequented. Guests would visit the baths for medicinal purposes and the baths are still used today and known for their health benefits. In recent years, not only have many foreigners fallen in love with the area, but thanks to the current mayor as well as the Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Axarquía’s and the Asociación de la Promoción Turistica de la Axarquía (APTA) OUT AND ABOUT in PERIANA

PERIANA pushing to promote tourism in the area, in 2015, a foreigners’ office was opened and two volunteers work closely with politicians not only to help to attract tourism to the town but also to promote closer integration between the growing foreign population and the Spanish people who live there. They run successful weekly Spanish classes and organise a year-round programme of events which everyone is encouraged to attend, regardless of nationality. Festivals Día del Aceite Verdial (see above) On 15th May every year, Periana pays homage to its Patron Saint; Saint Isidore the farmer (San Isidro Labrador). Like many agricultural towns and villages in Spain, Saint Isidore is an important figure in Periana, as his English name suggests, he is the Patron Saint of farmers. As the procession passes the town’s fountain, the ‘throne’ carrying a statue of the saint is rocked as a reminder of the important role the water source played in the past. Peaches are another local crop and the día del melocotón (peach day) is celebrated every year on the last Saturday in July and the town’s annual Feria (fair) takes place during the penultimate week of August. Walking routes A number of walking routes are available in and around Periana, including the Millennial olive trees, which takes in the oldest examples in the Axarquía, which, as their name suggests, are over 1,000 years old. Another route follows the old railway tracks. Further information about these and other walks can be found at: www.periana.es and are available in English. Photograph by Rob Bell Photography

From Snap Shot to Great Shot Hi, my name is Rob Bell, I am a photographer from the UK, now living in the beautiful pueblo of Torrox. My work is inspired by my love of nature and all the wonderful sights, colours and landscapes that surround me every day. I have a great passion for photography, capturing that unique moment in time. I also teach photography, Photoshop and Light Room, one to one or in groups. I lead the U3A Photography Group and as a volunteer I run a photography group at Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar. Since June 2015 I have been providing photos to The Directory and now feature on the front cover and within the articles written about places in the Axarquia region. Each month I will share with you hints and tips to help you improve your photography, whether you shoot with your phone, a point & shoot, bridge or DSLR camera. The first thing to remember is that spending lots of money on a top of the range camera will not make you a better photographer. I know this first hand because at the age of 17 I was inspired to take up photography by a work colleague, I saved up my wages, brought my first SLR and spent more money on film, filters and all sorts of other kit only to be frustrated by the quality of my shots. Digital cameras were the game changer, it become a more affordable hobby in that you take as many photos as you like without the developing cost. However, the best investment in photography is time and it’s not what you use but how you use it. Next month: I’ll have some tips on how to get great shots from your mobile phone camera. 44

THE FINAL SOLUTION During the inhabitation of this planet we have been looking for The Final Solution to problems. For potentates, the objective is solutions that will resolve it all. That leads to wrong solutions to incorrect problems. Hitler designed a final solution to his Jewish problem, Franco, was prepared to kill off half of the Spanish population to handle the opposition. Assad, in Syria, (who is a medical doctor), operates in the same way. The medical industry is waiting for a pill that handles everything from migraine to ingrown toenails. Solutions do not have to be complicated. They may too obvious to be recognised. If people in your environment are giving you a hard time? Cut them off. Why suffer from people that do not contribute to well being? To want to be right is a human trait. It makes us mentally alter realities to a point that suits us. That means that we lie more to ourselves than to anyone else, and we repeat the lies until we believe them. If you are working hard to resolve something and it doesn’t resolve, chances are high that you are trying to handle the wrong problem. A lady, inflated round the waist as a balloon, claimed that she was doing great on a diet that had made her loose three kilos in three years. It may be difficult to see where the actual problem is. We get caught up in ego/prestige games to the detriment of everybody. Problems have contributing factors of varying importance. To understand the 48

whole it is necessary to understand the parts. While objectively examining the parts of any situation it becomes clearer what has to be done. The solution to any problem is not finding the right scapegoat, symptom or explanation. It is finding the minimal thing or real cause which improves the situation. Strangely enough this works well for love, work, health and almost anything else. At Pies y Bienestar we are ready to support you on health improvements whenever you are. Periana Olive Oil Co-operative "San Isidro" : The Periana Cooperative "San Isidro", one of the oldest in the Axarquía, is dedicated to the production of extra virgin, cold pressed olive oil mainly of the ‘verdial’ variety. What makes this Golden Juice, as it is known locally, special is the dedication of the some 800 local families involved in the cooperative, harvesting the fruit at precisely the right moment, ensuring each variety is kept separate and the unique climatic conditions of the region. The Millennium: The star product of the Cooperative is the Extra Virgin Verdial Olive Oil ‘El Milenario’ which is produced by selecting the best fruit harvested from the many thousand year old trees in the area and elaborated in the traditional way. A beautiful greenish-gold colour, soft to the palate and with a sweet after taste, this unique olive oil is liquid gold in a bottle. Situated in the centre of town just below the church, a visit to the Cooperative is not to be missed. Visits can be arranged via the Foreigners’ Department email: foreigners@periana.es and the factory shop is open every day.
