Currency News
Tips to find the right time to transfer your money to or from Spain When sending money overseas, making the right decisions is essential, and it doesn’t stop with the choice of the provider and transfer service, but also includes the selection of the right time. As 2016 demonstrated, the currency market is hugely volatile and exchange rates can fluctuate dramatically in a short space of time. Currency experts know that following these rate variations is essential to find the best time to transfer, therefore, they give you the option to set up Rate Alerts. All you have to do is to tell them your desired rate; they will follow the markets on your behalf and whenever your target rate has been achieved, they will inform you by email or SMS. Understanding the market movements is also essential. That’s why most currency specialists offer a personalised service which includes communications with a dedicated account manager and access to online tools such as currency charts, allowing you to follow the evolution of your currency; and regular market updates which are delivered straight into your email inbox. Although there isn’t any magical tool to predict the future variations of exchange rates, the elements mentioned above, combined with help from currency specialists, will enable you to assess the appropriate time for your transfer. It’s important that you keep in mind that the exchanges rates displayed online and on various communications are quite often interbank rates - that’s to say the wholesale rates at which banks (and only banks) buy and sell currency between each other. Whenever you’re ready or the right time comes around to transfer, we advise that you speak to your account manager to obtain a quote based on your transfer amount. For more information and expert guidance, please contact Currencies Direct (see details page 13) 12

gardening tips Tips for your garden in May It starts to decidedly feel as if summer is making an arrival and that’s when we look out into our gardens and it dawns on us just how much we want to do to make them look beautiful for the coming months. There are always plenty of jobs to get done in the garden 1. Great time to apply some fertiliser and weed-killer to make sure your lawn is as healthy as possible come June. 2. Are you growing strawberries? To keep the fruit clean and make sure no mould grows, lay straw between the strawberry plants. And, keep all your other fruit that’s growing well watered in dry spells. 3. It’s time to plant some roses! 4. The beginning of May is the perfect time to plant up a container with perennials rather than annuals. Because they come back year after year it’s a really economic option, and you can transplant them later into the garden if you want. Choose from penstemons, agapanthus, sedums, heucheras…or whatever takes your fancy. 5. There’s no better time to give your evergreen hedges a trim to get them looking neat and tidy. Once spring-flowering shrubs have flowered you can cut them back if you want. 6. Continue to keep on top of removing weeds from your paths and terraces 7. Repot houseplants in new soil. 8. Plant or transplant trees and shrubs before the heat of summer. 9. Spring bulbs have stopped blooming and will be looking a bit ropey now but try to leave the foliage in place as GARDENING these leaves will make the food the bulb needs to produce flowers next year. 10. Enjoy this faboulous month of your garden Maria Lavao from Viveros-Garden Center El Algarrobo Email: viveroelalgarrobo@gmail.com Tel: 615 512 423 18

LIVE TO LOVE THE ROAD Education for Life
The tracks on earth we create as humans, should they be permanent like the statue of Hercules pillars in the northern Moroccan harbour? Or maybe only footsteps in the sand simply washed away by wild ocean waves or by a desert storm? In our children, we plant love as a solid pillar of strength and the tracks of our movements rest within them as their compasses for life, their education for life. We want our own children Maj and Lucas to be world citizens, wake up each morning and feel that they are a part of an amazing world where they themselves play a lead role. We want to be happy. Smiling when then sun rises over a gorgeous mountain pass, when walking down to the garden to pick our own grown vegetables and singing in the rain. We want them to feel gratitude for what they have. We want them to meet challenges with an open mind with curiosity for the unknown and their choices to be made from knowledge and wisdom. We want them to see that life is a journey with lots of love and many helping hands. We want them to know that the world is their home and together we are all responsible to look after it for now and for coming generations. We changed our lives in August 2013 and moved to Spain. We decided to show 20

LAWYERS (ABOGADOS)
Co-habitants rights. Do they exist? In English law there is no such thing as a “common law marriage”. In fact the situation for co-habiting couples is causing increasing concern as more than 35% of couples who live together and share property believe they have legal rights which in fact do not exist. This was revealed in a survey carried out by an English law firm. Equally revealing is that 75% of co-habiting couples believe they should have the same rights as married couples.
trust relationship. However, trusts are not recognised in Spain so you have to prove your contribution with physical evidence of payments to make any claim on the property. Co-habitation agreements can be drawn up dealing with these issues but it would be necessary to get detailed advice on how this can affect property rights. The worst thing would be to arrive in this situation without being aware of your rights and obligations so prevention is always better than cure.
The reason this is so important in England and some other countries is that cohabiting couples who own property as joint tenants don´t understand that this means that they own as to 50/50 regardless of how much each has contributed. Another potential problem on separation is that a number of couples live together for many years in a property where the legal title is solely in the name of one of the couple. To prove you have any legal rights or any right to any of the sale proceeds can be very difficult and expensive.
Where there are rights of occupation for children the position is more straightforward. For advice on this or any aspect of co-habitation, family and property rights contact us on 952 527014 or email us on info@decottalaw.net.
The situation for co-habiting couples in Spain can be even more difficult. In terms of proving property rights these would be governed by the laws of the country where the property is situated ie. Spain. This can mean that a jointly owned property in Spain is to be divided as to 50/50 regardless of the contributions of each of the parties. If you live together in a property where only one of the parties has legal ownership in the UK you would need to rely on proving that there was a “common intention” to own jointly or a 22

OUT AND ABOUT
out and about in FRIGILIANA Frigiliana, nestled up in the hills north of Nerja, has been voted most beautiful town in Spain on several occasions, since first winning the prestigious title in 1967 (it came second in 1961). It isn’t difficult to understand why. Roughly one third of Frigiliana’s population of 3,000 is foreign and the Brits make up the majority of that third. They and many other nationalities have fallen in love with this small town’s beauty over the years and have made it home. Despite its diminutive size, Frigiliana is a town in its own right and has a town hall and a dedicated councillor and foreign residents’ officer. The prize-winning town has a constant stream of tourists and organised bus tours frequent the town, bringing day-trippers from all over the world to what is said to be the best example of Moorish architecture in Malaga province; an olde-worldy place but with the conveniences and tastes of modernity, like cute little cafés offering anything from a Malagueña ‘sombra’ to a cappuccino. Art galleries, artisan chocolate shops and bohemianstyle boutiques have opened up alongside the traditional souvenirs and ceramics shops. While practically any town or village in the Axarquía can lay claim to the area’s rich
36
The DIRECTORY May 2017
diversity of olive oil, mangoes, avocados and muscatel wine, Frigiliana has something the others don’t, at least not any more: its own, still-working sugar cane factory. Nuestra Señora del Carmen factory, or ingenio, as it’s known in Spanish, stands proudly at the entrance to Frigiliana. Since 2014 it has opened its doors to the public once a year, for the annual ‘día de la miel de caña,’ or ‘molases day.’ Although the area stopped producing sugar cane several years ago, Frigiliana’s ingenio has outlived its neighbours in Torre del Mar, Nerja and Maro, by importing the raw product from the Caribbean and in particular Cuba. The final product can be bought not just in souvenir shops in Frigiliana, but in major supermarkets across Spain too and the dark, treacle-like liquid is highly revered locally for its health benefits, but it is perhaps more widely known as an accompaniment to deep fried aubergines (berenjenas fritas); a local delicacy. One of Frigiliana’s biggest annual events is the 3 Cultures festival, which usually takes place at the end of August. In 2017, OUT AND ABOUT in FRIGILIANA
the event, which is in its 12th year, will take place from 24 to 27 August. The event attracts well-known names from World Music and to celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2015, Manu Chau performed. This hugely popular music and dance festival also includes a medieval market and tapas route around

the village and aims to promote the three cultures that make up the history of Frigiliana; Arabic, Christian and Jewish. The artists are always carefully chosen to represent the three elements of this hugely popular festival, which
started in 2006. By 2016 it was attracting up to 35,000 visitors over the four-day period. Frigiliana’s annual fair (Feria) takes place around 13th June and pays homage to Saint Antony (San Antonio), the town’s patron. The main event is the Romería, or pilgrimage, in which images of the saint are carried to the Higuerón river, commemorating the Christian victory over the Moors in the Battle of the Rock of Frigiliana on June 11th 1569. The town also celebrates the Día de la Cruz, or las cruces de mayo (the May crosses) like other towns in the area, which takes place on 3rd May. Crosses are decorated with flowers and displayed around the town, symbolizing the cross that Jesus died on. Frigiliana also holds its own Semana Santa (Holy Week) processions, San Sebastian and Carnival celebrations. What to see in Frigiliana The Mudéjar area, or old town, gets its name from the Moors who remained in Spain after the Catholic Kings reclaimed the country (the Reconquista), but who didn’t convert 37
frigiliana to Christianity. Frigiliana’s Mudejár area is considered to be the best example of Moorish architecture in Malaga province. It’s the narrow, cobbled streets, unending steps, which donkeys used to climb carrying wares often brought up from nearby Nerja, which have been replaced by bohemian shops, that lure visitors back to Frigiliana. Add to that tiny squares with even tinier cafés and higgledypiggledy houses adorned with flowers and ceramics and this town really does offer an irresistibly heady mix of old and new. There are a number of important sites in the town that are well worth visiting: The Arab castle, the old fountain, the royal granaries and the Casa del Apero, home to the museum and municipal library all offer an insight into the history and culture of this fascinating town.
Photo supplied by Ayuntamiento de Frigi
There are plenty of options for hiking too, with the Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama mountain range surrounding the village. The most accessible walk is from the entrance to Frigiliana and follows the river higuerón, so called because the source starts at a small fig tree (higuero), down to Nerja. Practical information. Frigiliana’s tourist office is in the Casa del Apero on Calle Cuesta del Apero, along with the municipal library and museum. Plenty of information can also be found on the town hall website: www.turismofrigiliana.es

A regular bus service goes between Frigiliana and Nerja. From the A7 motorway take the 243 exit onto the A5105 (signed to Nerja and Frigiliana). There is plenty of street parking in and around Frigiliana, although at weekends and at festival times getting there early is the only way to secure a spot.

Why have a Water filter? The human body is compound by approximately 70% of water and it is essential for our health to drink a daily amount of minimum 1,5 litres of mineral water. Experts of the latest investigations confirm that: “ through the drinking water the human body is fed with important electrolytes/mineral salts, like magnesium and calcium, for the health”. Unfortunately the tap water supplied in our houses is not analyzed nor purified properly. It contains chlorine, possibly heavy metals like lead and aluminum and also residues of medicaments, herbicides and hormonal disruptors. That’s why a lot of people end up buying mineral water, hoping that the quality of bottled water is better than the tap water. The bottled water in plastic containers, are not only exposed to contamination of the proper plastic (hormonal disruptors), it has been also treated for it’s long duration. I would not call it a VITAL WATER anymore. Instead we can filter our tap water naturally and ecologically, with the help of filters made of ACTIVE CARBON from coconut shell. The water flows without pressure through several layers. Chlorine, bad smells, heavy metals, drug residues, herbicides, pesticides, 50

hormonal substances etc... are easily eliminated. The water filtration with active carbon offers us in a easy and efficient way our own mineral water – alive and healthy, rich in electrolytes/minerals, essential for our health. The PH of the water is not being changed (as it is with other systems like osmosis or filter jars), which should be over PH 7,5. I recommend you only to add some fresh and natural lemon juice drops to your filtered mineral water, that way we change the molecular structure of the calcium from carbonate into citrate. A easy way to absorb better the minerals in the water and to avoid the formation of kidney stones. The filter cartridges have a capacity of approx. 5000 litres or said in a other way, upon your consumption they can last between 6 to 9 months. The price of home-filtered water is only € 0,03/litre (The prices of bottled water is between € 0,30 and € 0,70 per litre). Call in to Rincon Natural in Nerja to find out more about water filter systems.

GOOD ROBOT, BAD ROBOT The interest for the field of Robotics has fascinated man for a long time. .The word Robot has a Czech origin and means forced labour, i. e. slavery. The idea is that we need robots to do the work that we don’t want to do ourselves, that are too cumbersome or dangerous or expensive to have people do. Robots are utilised to produce a lot of products in daily use. Although supervised by humans, almost all household products, food , tools and utilities are manufactured by robots. They do their job without complaint. They do not need lunch breaks and they don’t go for a smoke now and then or waste time chatting with fellow robots. A robot who works hard, does not complain. What about us? Are we good or bad robots? Somebody has to do the boring and repetitive jobs. Someone has to take care of the stinking garbage we are masters in producing. We need people to keep our streets clean and a lot of other tasks that does not require a PHD to handle. Those that do that kind of jobs are the working class heroes and nothing would really function without them. We all have a part in constructing the world we want to live in. How can we improve the world if we cannot or do not even take care of our own bodies? We continue to buy and eat toxic food. We accept being prescribed medicine that handle symptoms but that are detrimental to our health in the long run. We gladly destroy our intestinal flora, preparing the way for auto immune diseases. We smoke and drink and snort to forget or create a safe heaven at home in our favorite sofa. 54
The DIRECTORY May 2017
Robots normally do not make a fuss over things. The easy way is to tell ourselves that there is nothing we can do. We have no power. Nobody will listen. We are to young, too old, to fat, too skinny, to weak... We are definitely our own worst enemies. The first step is to make sure that the “vehicle” we use for our communication, “our body”, is in acceptable shape. Most often the body needs to be detoxified in order for the mind to start working properly. We are surrounded by a lot of toxicity. Toxic tooth fillings, toxic food but also toxic ideas and people. That which is not recognized cannot be handled. Recently depression has come up as the most common and most debilitating of all illnesses. But how do we get depressed? By having things that we believe we absolutely cannot do anything about. Things we try to handle or worry about handling until we are convinced that they will never be handled and that the only thing we can do is to shut down completely. The road to depressions one of becoming more and more robotic. Doing over and over again the things we have long since realized will not improve the situation. From Snap Shot to Great Shot The 6 most common compositional tips I use whenever I’m out shooting. 1. Put something in the foreground and something in the background. It sounds very obvious, but it’s shocking how often this one is forgotten. 2. If an object needs to be cut off at the edge of a photo, do it with intent. Cut it off at a place that makes sense. For example, if you shoot a mountain and just clipped the top of it off, it’ll probably look better if you crop further in and make it look like it was on purpose. 3. Create a focal point or anchor in every image. Most images need a focal point, somewhere for the eye to go. So, if you’re shooting a big mountain which fills most of the frame, that probably won’t be enough unless there’s something interesting on that mountain. Try placing an object in the foreground to “anchor” the shot, or maybe accentuate a particular ray of light that’s beaming through the clouds on to a spot on the mountain, giving the eye something to land on. 4. Use the rule of thirds, the thinking behind the rule of thirds is to break the frame into three equal sections, both horizontally and vertically. Place the focal point where these lines intersect. 5. Even without moving your camera, the scene can constantly change. Especially if you’re shooting long exposures. Anything that moves whilst your shutter is open (water, clouds, people, animals, vehicles etc.) has the potential to create a different photo every time you click the shutter. I often use blurred rushing water as a compositional element in my seascapes and every wave is different. 6. Remember to try horizontal and vertical compositions. Just turning your camera 90 degrees can create a very different look and feel to the result. Before you shoot spend a minute or two, looking through the viewfinder, flipping between vertical and horizontal to see what looks best. Rob Bell Photography.
