Protecting Your Home From Break-Ins A break-in always has a major impact on your and your family’s sense of safety and well-being. Help protect your home from break-ins with Home Security Tips from ¡PERFECT ALARM! S.L. Tip No. 8: Alarm Code Tip You Should Know Have you ever thought about how many people may have your alarm code? You may have given it to a pet sitter that one time six months ago . . . oh, and your friend who came to water your flowers . . . After a while, the amount of people who have your code may grow. This is especially true if you don’t change your code on a regular basis. To be sure you are playing it safe, follow this tip. For your security, you should assign new codes around 2 to 4 times a year. Make it a daylight savings routine when you reset your clocks.

The DIRECTORY November 2016
Being the creatures of habit that we are, it’s common to attempt to input your old code after you’ve made a recent change. For the first week or so, keep a reminder note on your panel to remind you to punch in the correct new code.
¡GIVE ME FIVE!
Given that one can’t be everywhere at all times, unless of course you’re an electron, I had to delegate a report on the new dog beach just outside Torre Del Mar to our comrade H. Fischtunke. I even loaned him our dog Bobo and a camera. Before I get into the debrief, there is one VERY important thing you need to know: ALWAYS take full documentation of your dog with you. For most dogs this will be its passport but if your dog is listed as a “Potentially Dangerous Dog” then you will also need insurance information should anything go wrong, God forbid. Also, a “Dangerous Dog¨ will need to be muzzeled as well as any dog over 20 kilos. Also, it goes without saying that all dogs “at every moment” must be “vigilantly” monitored by their owners and should not “molest” any of the other users of the beach. Before the impending arrival of the Guarda Civil, Fischtunke avers that the fixed agility course offered a wonderful opportunity for sport. In no time a light bulb blazed in his abnormal brain and within minutes he had rounded up 8 hounds and owners for a little Agility gaming. Handlers and dogs were given five minutes to learn the course. Two time trials were run to handicap the hounds on a per second basis. 20€ minimum bets were taken. A weird, old lanky German who mistakenly believed that tight underpants were the equivalent of a bathing suit held the money as a neutral third party. According to Fischtunke, things were really getting lively after the third run with 20€ notes rapidly replaced by 100s (Fischtunke taking a 10% cut as The Bank). Until the Denunciacion, that is. All hell broke loose when a red-headed Welsh woman began speaking in tongues. She was hysterical but no one could understand her. Speak English woman! Damn you, Fischtunke cried. In a fit of pique she got on all fours and disappeared into the tunnel. Her own dog, a beautiful Collie, the favorite, followed after her. Punters watched in horror as the tunnel suffered grotesque convulsions. It looked like a snake trying to digest a category 3 rat in an avocado grove. After about 45 seconds the Welsh woman emerged with a cocktail wiener in her mouth. Nobody could understand her but it gradually became apparent that she was accusing some evil-doer of sabotaging the tunnel with weenies. For reasons that aren’t clear, Fischtunke blew the safe whistle for our dog Bobo and took flight. Apparently there is only one distributor of dog whistles on the coast because soon the entire pack of hounds were hot on his heels. Fischtunke snatched the money bag from the German and splashed through the river arriving on the naturist beach with 27 hounds running amok. Fischtunke is currently growing a mustache and convalescing in a safe house. We’ve been told the whole thing went viral on You Tube.

LAWYERS (ABOGADOS) Habitual Residence of Children When parents separate and live in different countries there may be a very difficult decision to be made about where the children live and what effect a change of residence has on them. The laws in Europe and most other countries focus on the “habitual residence” of the children. The decision on where the children have their residence is based on a factual investigation. For example, a child might be in school in England but actually have a habitual residence in Spain. Referring to European case law, Justice Hayden in a Supreme Court ruling in England – BA Minor EWHC 2174 – stated, in considering where the child is resident, facts should be presented to show “the child’s day-today life and experiences; family environment; interests and hobbies; friends etc. and an appreciation of which adults are most important to the child. The approach must always be child driven.” Courts in Spain and the rest of Europe all make the well-being of the child their first consideration. In some cases judges do quite reasonably insist that lawyers representing the parents must not place too much emphasis on the parents’ views and must concentrate on the child’s needs. By far the best approach is for the lawyers to mediate a settlement so that the children have a fixed and stable arrangement, spending time with each parent and keeping regular contact by phone, skype and other means when they are with the other parent. This is particularly important where parents live in different countries. Regular contact gives the child security and if the parents can’t agree the Court will have to intervene, but the judge will always concentrate on the child’s well-being. This does not mean that the child’s residence cannot be changed as in some cases this may mean returning to the country of origin if there is no social, family and economic support in the country where they are living. Are you a Fatalist? A fatalist is someone who believes that the future is laid out and that we are powerless to change it. Believing in inevitable fate or not, there are few that admit that they confess to such a disturbing train of thought. In actuality a lot of people suffer from such debilitating ideas. Although no religious system oblige you to be powerless in moulding your own future, there exists a number of proverbial sayings that do very little to help carry humanity onwards, or that help you or any other living, breathing human being. “It is all in the hands of the Lord”. “Everything happens for a reason” More mundane variants such as “I am too old to change anything now.” “It has already gone too far” etc .. We train ourselves to accept things as they are, even when they are not good at all. When there is something we don’t quite understand, or that we have a hard time confronting, we invent excuses and explanations. We name things as “normal” that in reality are not normal at all. The most common cause of disability in our society is not, as one would think, illness. It is depression in its various forms. If it makes a person happy to receive money, the cure for depression in most cases is not related to the money at all. If you want to be depressed there is no lack of reasons to be so. Your life may be completely different from what you want it to be. This can become so tricky that depressed people don’t even know what they want their lives to be like. The most common response is something around, I want peace and quite. I am sorry, peace and quiet is for dead people. Life is passionately, reverberatingly, noisy disorganized and marvellous. So what can we do about it? In order to organise anything for the better it is always needed to see what is there, see what needs to be done, and which change will predict a destiny more to our liking. In order to understand anything it is necessary to see things as they are, without explanations and excuses. There can be no becauses or buts. If you are fat you are fat, not chubby or a bit overweight. Things will improve when you improve them or when you prepare the way for improvement. So your destiny was to be in bad shape for a while. It is not important. The important thing is that change is here, this moment and that tomorrow will be allowed to be much better. Whatever path your destiny has laid out for you, make sure that it is the path you like. A simple recipe for success is 1) Who are you? 2) What are you doing? 3) Whom are you doing it for? 4) Which result do you expect from that? Work this over until it is clear about what you want to do with your life. don´t forget to take care of your body in the process, it will be useful in order to accomplish that which you decide to do. Something can always be done, and now you know that it is you that has to be doing it. Call +34 722 188 811 or come and see us at Pies y Bienestar on Calle Pintada 73 in Nerja. 44

Yogi ADVENTURE When I moved to Nerja, the guy who sorted my winter rental told me to get out and meet people: at bars, cafes, parties, for tapas etc. But while I like all of these, it felt a bit random. I’ve always been a proponent of enjoying life’s rich tapestry: nature, activities, culture, art, most things. But I’m not sure how many of these you’ll find at the bottom of a glass.
where we had desayuno, took photos and clambered on the craggy limestone formations. We descended through pine forests and rocky outcrops with peeping deer and circling birds of prey. Then we ate in the sleepy village square before checking out the (stinky) local cheeses and (not so stinky, but equally delicious) cakes – nomnom.
So once I got settled, I did an extensive sweep of Facebook, Meet-Up, Instagram and local media to find out what was going on. I found an awesome bunch of women through Costa Women and the other treasure was Meet-Up group: Hike, Chat, Discover, …Andalucia.
The group has almost 400 ‘caminantes’ but you can expect 10-20 on each walk. So there are plenty of opportunities to chat.
Juanjo – the group organiser – specialises in ‘espectacular’. And I’ve gone on several of his hikes and been blown away every time. Not just by the sheer beauty and variety of Andalucian landscapes, but also the information he imparts: culture, geology, history etc. One of the hikes I took part in was to Ronda where we hiked to the incredible Al Tajo del Abanico rock formations. Halfway through the hike, we cooled off in a serendipitous swimming pool complete with mountain views, Grecian-pillared terrace, and gnarled trees to dive off. At the end, we had tapas and cervezas in Plaza de San Francisco. The next day, we started from the beautiful mountainside village of Grazalema. Making our way through a Disney-esque valley lined with flowers, we climbed to a rock-strewn plateau 46
The DIRECTORY November 2016
I’m embarrassed to admit, people often speak in English. But the hikes are also a great opportunity to practice your Spanish – or another European language! Juanjo doesn’t do ‘Hello Kitty’ hikes, so you need a good level of fitness. Expect 10-20K of hiking different terrains: occasionally flat, but also climbing, scrambling and steep descents. So the tapas and cervezas at the end are welldeserved. Despite ‘reccying’ walks in advance and helping co-ordinate travel etc, Juanjo also doesn’t charge for these walks. A long-time volunteer and supporter of Unicef, he asks people to donate to charity instead. It can cost up to €50 for a guide-led walk of this quality, so donate just €15 and you’re in credit. And in the meantime, you’ll get a warm fuzzy feeling from helping vulnerable and disadvantaged children. Hasta pronto! Sal Samadhi Mañana sally@samadhi-manana.com www.samadhi-manana.com

Currency News Transferring your UK pension to Spain, worry-free and fee-free When retiring to Spain, one of the main reasons for moving money from the UK to Spain is the ongoing transfer of a pension. Whether you want to send a lump sum annuity from a UK account or simply make regular ongoing transfers from your monthly payments, transferring this money to your Spanish account shouldn’t be complicated or expensive. Saving money on each transfer If you are sending your pension to Spain on a monthly basis, making the right money transfer decisions could save you a significant amount of money over time. Where your traditional bank would charge you excessive fees and often poor exchange rates every time you transfer, currency experts, like Currencies Direct, guarantee no fees and highly competitive rates so you make the most of each transfer. Simple, fast and worry-free regular transfers There is no need to spend hours on the phone or online, every month, arranging the transfer of your money from one country to another. Currency specialists can offer regular transfer services which are fast, simple, fee-free and adapted to your needs. They’ll help you set up a Direct Debit to ensure transfers are done automatically and at the best possible exchange rate. You’ll be able to fix the amount (in Sterling) you’re sending from your UK account or the amount (in euro) that arrives on your Spanish bank account. Additionally, you’ll be given the possibility to fix the exchange rate in advance for your transfers so you avoid the fluctuating nature of currency exchange rates. For more information please contact Melanie Radford at Currencies Direct. (see details page 13) 48

There are many kinds of avocados, and the shape (from pear-shaped to round) and color (from green to black) can vary between them. They can also weigh anywhere from 8 ounces (220 grams) to 3 pounds (1.4 kg).
The Internet dates back to 1969 when the U.S. military funded research of a network called Arpanet, named after the unit that funded it: Advanced Research Projects Agency. Since then, a lot than more than just the name has changed what was once a few computer scientists attempting to connect a handful of computers has expanded far beyond the United States to become a global phenomenon that has connected over half of the world’s population.
Axarquia is the 2nd largest region in the World for growing this amazing fruit. Prices can be high but the health benefits are huge. The largest region is in Mexico. Most popular dish from Avocados is guacamole. If your avocado is not ripe put it next to a banana and it soon will be. To prevent if going black when serving use lemon juice or simple leave the stone in the dish until serving.
In 1984, Arpanet was renamed to Internet and the Domain Name System was created with extensions and country codes, with .com still being the most popular in the world. The internet’s popularity grew with Tim Berners-Lee’s invention of the World Wide Web in 1990 and attracted more users with the 1993 invention of Mosaic, the world’s first web browser, by Marc Andreessen. E-commerce websites burst onto the scene during the mid-90s and has been a growing trend ever since. In fact, today, there are many companies who are solely online based rather than running physical shops. Almost a decade ago it was predicted that the world would become mostly mobile, and they were right! More users today access the internet via their mobile devices than desktop computers - this number is still rising.

TRAVEL NEWS
AUSTRALIA Mainland Australia is the world’s largest island but also the smallest continent. The country is divided into six states and two territories.
Australian Capital Territory
The national capital is Canberra and is the centre of government, and is home to a number of important national institutions, including Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial and the National Gallery of Australia.
New South Wales
Is Australia’s oldest and most populous state. Sydney is the capital and is the nation’s largest city and is renowned for its idyllic beaches, great walks and world-class dining and is also home to popular attractions including the Blue Mountains and the Hunter Valley wine region.
Northern Territory
At the top end of Australia lies the Northern Territory (NT). Darwin, on the northern coast, is the capital, and Alice Springs is the principal inland town. Alice Springs is the physical heart of Australia, almost exactly at the nation’s geographical centre. The Northern Territory is home to the famous Uluru (Ayers Rock), Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) and Kakadu National Park.
Queensland
Is Australia’s second-largest state (in size) and is home to the world famous Great Barrier Reef, the world’s most extensive subtropical rainforest and the beautiful Islands – including Fraser Island. Brisbane is the state’s capital; it enjoys more winter sunshine and warmth than most Australian cities and is perfect for outdoor activities and water sports.
South Australia
The state’s capital is Adelaide and is a great base for exploring the Barossa wineries, the Flinders Ranges and Kangaroo Island. South Australia has a thriving arts scene and is known as the ‘Festival State’, with more than 500 events and festivals taking place there each year.
Tasmania
Is separated from mainland Australia 50 The DIRECTORY November 2016 by the
Bass Strait and is the smallest state in Australia. The capital, Hobart, was founded in 1804 as a penal colony, and is Australia’s second oldest capital city after Sydney. One-fifth of Tasmania is covered by national parks and wilderness – abundant in driving routes and walking trails – and it is one of the world’s most mountainous islands.
Victoria
Is the smallest of the mainland states in size but is home to the country’s second most populated city, Melbourne. Often referred to as the nation’s cultural capital, Melbourne is famed for its graffiti laneways, fashion-forward boutiques and booming café scene. Victorians’ enthusiasm for sport is also legendary and this is where Australian Rules football began.
Western Australia
Is Australia’s largest state and is a place of true contrasts: from desert in the east to 13,000 kilometres of pristine coastline on the west. The state’s capital is Perth, the fourth most populous city in Australia and famed for its uncrowded beaches, parklands and fresh seafood.
How to get to Australia?

OUT AND ABOUT
Alcaucín
The breathtakingly beautiful municipality of Alcaucín is a must-visit for autumn. Now that the summer is over it’s possible to lure oneself away from the beach and into some of the inland beauty spots that this area offers. The valley of Alcaucín runs from the main town with the same name, down through a series of hamlets including Venta Alta, Venta Baja and ends with Puente Don Manuel, its southern-most point. Although largely ‘urbanizaciónes,’ or housing developments, these hamlets, for example Puente Don Manuel, offer a range of services aimed at the large foreign population that has chosen to live in the area including The Indian Palace restaurant in the Buenavista area for delicious Indian food, Rumours Hair and Beauty Salon, a fantastic place to relax and be pampered. Looking for a new outfit or a gift idea? Then call into Divas Boutique and Emporium and find what you are looking for. Missing traditional fish and chips? Then call in The Town Frier for a taste of home. The English Shop can also supply you with a wide range of British products and if you are thinking of moving to the area then give real estate agent Villa Solutions a call.
It is easy to understand why people want to live there; the panoramic views of the mountains and La Viñuela reservoir, as well as other whitewashed villages clinging to the sides of the mountains provide an unrivalled sense of space, fresh air and freedom. Alcaucín can also claim the spectacular ‘boquete de Zafarraya’ as its own; a mountain pass that connects Malaga with Granada. The boquete, or hole, is clearly visible from many parts of the Axarquía and has an interesting history… …from 1922 until 1960, a train ran from Vélez-Málaga, via Periana, to Ventas 56

Today a tourist train goes back and forth along part of the old line and can be caught in Ventas de Zafarraya, just under 12 kilometres from Alcaucín. The scale model is a replica of the original steam train and takes tourists around the mountain and village of Ventas de Zafarraya. For further information as well as group bookings visit: www.el trendelllano.com In 1983, in the same area, the jaw and other bones belonging to a Neanderthal man were discovered in caves, demonstrating that there has been human activity in the valley for hundreds of thousands of years. The discovery of ‘Zafarraya Man,’ as he is known, has helped scientists and archaeologists to ascertain that Neanderthals living in Andalusia lived longer than their contemporaries in other parts of Europe.

The total population of the municipality is in the region of 2,500, although Alcaucín town has around 300 inhabitants and is made up of a series of rambling, hilly streets and the typical whitewashed houses, synonymous with this part of Spain. The pretty town hall building is situated on Plaza de la Constitución, tucked away at the top of the town and near to the start of one of the ‘sendero’, or public footpaths, which lead up to La Maroma.
Alcaucín town is nestled in the foothills of the mountain, sitting at 500 metres above sea level and proudly overlooking its valley, La Viñuela reservoir and the boquete de Zafarraya. Up to 5,000 people are expected to come to the village every year, to sample the autumnal delights of roast chestnuts and baked sweet potatoes (boniatos), washed down with a glass of warming anís (anisette). This year, over the same weekend, Alcaucín will be hosting its first Xtrail race. The event is on the 5th & 6th November. The ‘plato tipical,’ or traditional dish, in Alcaucín may not be to everyone’s liking, but chivo al ajillo, or suckling goat with garlic, is a popular delicacy in the Axarquía and is often eaten around Christmas. It may also be served with an almond sauce.

The well-stocked tourist information office is open from 11am until 1pm, Monday to Friday and staff will be able to provide a wealth of information about what to do in the area. There are banks and a few shops in Alcaucín, as well as bars and restaurants, a municipal swimming pool and library. The inland area of the Axarquía provides a stark contrast to the larger costal towns of Torre del Mar, Torrox and Nerja and a visit should be part of any tourist or resident’s itinerary, to see how the mountains play a part in everyday life here.
