Currency News GBP/EUR drops despite Catalonian crisis, BoE in focus After hitting a nine-week high of €1.1427 on the 27th September, the GBP/EUR exchange rate took a tumble in October and currently trades in the region of €1.1150. On the other hand, EUR/GBP is in the region of £0.8966, with EUR/USD trending around US$1.1844 – right in the middle of the month’s trading range. What’s been happening? A disappointing run of UK PMIs and more signs of Tory infighting have combined to keep the pound steadily on the decline this month. Brexit negotiations continue to stall and Theresa May even went as far as telling Parliament that the UK should be prepared for a ‘no deal’ Brexit as a contingency. Bets of whether or not the Bank of England (BoE) will increase interest rates in November have also been fluctuating. The euro has had plenty to contend with as well. Catalonia voted overwhelmingly for independence during its referendum, and Spain imposed direct rule on the region when the Catalan leader refused to back down. The uncertainty surrounding the Eurozone’s second largest economy has kept the euro under pressure. What do you need to look out for? Catalonia will continue to be a focus for the euro, with any negative developments liable to send the euro lower. However, the European Central Bank’s 27th October monetary policy meeting will also be a key event. Markets are expecting officials to announce tapering to quantitative easing; if this happens the euro could rise. The US FOMC meets again this month. Markets are expecting no changes, but the meeting will be important nonetheless, as it will show whether or not a December rate hike is still likely. The Bank of England (BoE) isn’t due to gather until November, but speculation on whether or not the central bank will make any adjustment to borrowing costs is likely to be a main driver of GBP movement in the weeks ahead. At Currencies Direct we’re here to talk currency whenever you need us, so get in touch if you want to know more about the latest news or how it could impact your currency transfers. LIVE TO LOVE THE ROAD What is a school? Most of you would answer: a building. Even a Nomad who has never attended school said the same thing. If you ask me, what is a school, I would say, like we agreed in January 2017, in our inner circle of our project far out in the desert: The best school in the world starts within all of us. The willingness to share and learn. Susan, our crafts expert and I set out crossing a stormy Mediterranean sea to teach crafts and learn Nomad ways in March 2017. We made plans during our two day drive down to the Sahara. We came with a box of ideas and an open mind to learn. What our first class taught us, was about the music of the desert when we attended the Nomad festival in Mhamid the first night we arrived. The next morning, we could start giving back. We had brought textiles, needles and yarn. Together with our first group of women, Susan taught them how to upcycle a pair of jeans to a bag and adding a blanket stitch as decoration. Our aim, was to create a new product that they could sell at the local market. Over the next week, Susan taught two groups of women new sewing and crochet techniques, enhancing the knowledge they already had. Kindly, we were repaid by one of the husbands when he taught us how to build a oven for breadmaking out of dirt and

12

The DIRECTORY November 2017

water. We also had another breadmaking class and learned how to cook couscous, one of the national dishes of Morocco, together with our partner and guide Brahim. The original plans we had made, did not work in reality, but we invented new ways, together. New ways for the new Nomad craft association to start their business and to get basic education. Because, when we commanded a tent from them, we could introduce the basic element of what is 60 cm. We taught the women how to count to 1 metre and how to use a measuring tape. A skill well worth knowing for them as they continue to invent products to sell both locally and globally. Our school continues every day. What could you teach? Imagine what you could get back? Follow my Moroccan tracks during 2017. LAWYERS (ABOGADOS)

Litigation in Spain As a law firm with clients from many different countries, we have the advantage of being able to advise companies and individuals in their own language on all aspects of Spanish litigation. This can range from debt enforcement to complex property matters. We always seek a negotiated settlement first but if this fails we normally send a burofax prior to action. If no response is received we would have to draft a full petition to the court with evidence supporting your claim. When dealing with unpaid debts the evidence would normally be issued bills or a written loan or debt document. For companies, the corresponding bills – facturas – would need to have been issued with Iva and we can then make a monetary claim. Disputes between property owners are often settled by obtaining a survey – topografo – which can be provided with your title deed to show that your boundary has been infringed. If you cannot reach agreement, it may be necessary to provide this evidence to the court and ask the Judge to make a declaration. Another property issue that can arise is where a neighbour starts to build on your land or in front of your property and does not appear to have a license. This would require an injunction which would bring a halt to the building prior to a full hearing of the matter. No two cases are alike in litigation, so seek advice on your particular case. Our specialist litigation lawyers Javier Florido and Reyes Gomez can assist you. Contact us on 952 527 014 or info@decottalaw.net. 20

OUT AND ABOUT

out and about in ACEBUCHAL The tiny hamlet of Acebuchal, situated between Cómpeta and Frigiliana, could be described as new and old at the same time. It is old. In fact historians know that it has existed since the 17th Century, when it provided a stop on the trading route between Malaga and Granada and its history could even date back to earlier times like most of its neighbouring towns and villages. However, the hamlet became known as ‘the ghost village’ between 34

1949 and 1998, from when Franco drove the inhabitants out, believing that they had supported the Republicans during Spain’s bloody Civil War, until a family whose roots lay in Acebuchal saw its potential and started to redevelop it towards the end of the 20th Century. The fact that it has only been inhabited again since 1998 makes it new, in a sense, although the buildings that stand today have been rebuilt from the ruins that remained when the last residents fled at

The DIRECTORY November 2017

during the early years of Franco’s regime. During Spain’s Civil War, which was fought between 1936 and 1939, many of the villages of the Axarquía declared themselves as Republican and fought againstor at least opposed Franco’s Nationalist forces. Two of these were Frigiliana and Acebuchal and it is said that the residents of Acebuchal hid and fed Republican Guerillas who were hiding from the Nationalists in the surrounding mountains. In 1949 General Franco

OUT AND ABOU

embarked on a final bid to rid the country of remaining Republicans. His forces ordered the remaining residents of Acebuchal out and they fled the hamlet, leaving their houses and many of their belongings behind. The Guardia Civil – the then Francoist police force, used the village as a base to hunt down remaining Guerillas. The police eventually left and Acebuchal was forgotten about and the houses fell into ruins. In 1998, a couple from Frigiliana saw the tourist potential of the place and

UT in ACEBUCHAL

started to buy up property. Their son, Sebastián, who now runs Bar Restaurante El Acebuchal, along with his brother, Antonio, says that his mother, Virtudes Sánchez, whose father was born in Acebuchal, bought her first property for just 1,000 euros! The restaurant, which is in fact a converted school, opened in 2005.

and lunch and booking is definitely recommended. It also doubles up as a museum, with old photos of Acebuchal as well nearby villages. Poems written by Virtudes as well as paintings of the couple who rediscovered the hamlet line the walls and the menus explain the hamlet’s history in both English and Spanish.

The restaurant is popular and the telephone doesn’t seem to stop with people phoning to reserve tables. The exciting, modern menu is packed full of locallysourced products and the homemade bread is sold as far afield as Malaga city! It is open from 10am until 4pm every day, serving breakfast, coffee

Another restaurant, La Montés, has opened up in the last year and owner Rafa, who is one of a handful of permanent residents in Acebuchal, says that business is booming, with individuals and group bookings coming in daily. Other investors have followed in the couple’s footsteps and the streets of Acebuchal are now a collection of freshlypainted whitewash houses, with brightly coloured doors, windowsills and matching flowerpots and decorations. Most of the properties are either second homes or holiday cottages available to rent. Antonio García, Virtudes now ex-husband, runs the only shop in the hamlet, which is located about 10 metres further down the hill from the restaurants, 35

ACEBUCHAL

Getting there A l t h o u g h A ce b u c h a l actually belongs to Cómpeta, it is slightly closer to Frigiliana and is easier to access coming from Frigiliana than Cómpeta. Although the road isn’t tarmacked in some parts and there is no barrier, it is accessible in a normal car and you don’t need a four by four to get there. The sign to the right on the Frigiliana to Torrox pueblo road is misleading as it appears to suggest that it’s a further 17 kilometres down into the hamlet. In fact it is only about three kilometres down the mountain road.

which in turn are almost opposite each other at the beginning of Acebuchal. The shop doesn’t have a sign, but Antonio vows that he is always there and that visitors only have to “ask for Antonio” if they find it closed or unattended. It sells a variety of goods, from his own local sweet wine, to some of the ceramic pots and other trinkets that were found during the restoration of houses. At the right time of year mangoes and other Photographs of Acebuchal local produce will also be by Rob Bell Photography on offer! There is a small chapel, which was built with the help of a number of people, whose names appear on a plaque on the outside wall. It’s hard to get lost in Acebuchal; just two small streets make up the hamlet, which is set deep inside a valley surrounded by the Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama mountain range. There are plenty of walking routes from Acebuchal too. 36

Richard and his colleagues are organising a series of talks to be held in different villages and towns across the Axarquía, along with social activities with the aim of getting people out of their homes and giving them an opportunity not only to meet others but see some of the area. For example in October, they organised a trip on the Vélez-Málaga tourist train, taking in some of the key historic sites in the Axarquía’s most important town, such as the old fort, house where Miguel de Cervantes is said to have stayed during his time there and the hermita – the small chapel of Our Lady of the Remedies on top of the Cerro San Cristobal hill. The Red Cross can also offer support and devices for people with early onset dementia as well as other assistance for those who are struggling financially or emotionally after the loss of a loved one etc. Richard is in the Cruz Roja Axarquía office on Mondays and Thursdays from 11am until 1pm in Mercovelez, Avenida Juan Carlos 1, VélezMálaga (opposite Almacenes Búfalo). www.cruzroja.es, email Richard: 29094social@cruzroja.es, tel: 952 500 321 / 952 503 484. The centre is also looking for more English-speaking volunteers who are able to lend a few hours of their time a week for anything from accompanying people to hospital and doctor appointments to helping out with talks and activities or collections. It doesn’t matter how much time you can spare or what you are happy to do to help and while knowledge of some Spanish is useful, by no means do you have to be fluent to be helpful! 37

NURSES NOTES Growing Older in Spain and Care Options Sadly failing health in Spain often produces a `knee jerk´reaction that often gets people being rushed mindlessly to the airport back to the UK. This result can sometimes make the person more traumatised by the well meaning changes that have been inflicted on them. The key is good planning! If mum, dad or a member of the famiy have retired to Spain it is because that is what they wanted. Enforced repatriation isn´t conducive to happy golden days and living with the family to be cared for can takes huge adjustments and personal sacrifice for all concerned and often creates real strains on relationships. As years advance it is good to consider the accommodation and geographical position of the home in preparation for less independent times.

The carer can often provide shopping services, and cleaning your home as well as personal care and companionship. Look at the possibility of sitter services and respite. There is often a flexible solution and equipment to make life easier for the patient. Also consider the Spanish nursing homes, they are known as `residencias´. There is one run by the Nuns in Nerja and in Caleta there is Caleta del Sol and Sanysol is in Torre del Mar. The writer is presently exploring the possibility of carers going into a Spanish residencia to assist english speaking patients. Choosing a nursing home will be in the next issue.

Look into online shopping for home delivery services (no more carrying heavy shopping bags)! When thinking of home improvements consider a walk in shower. Look at easier access, if you can reduce the number of steps you have to climb, perhaps create a ramp if possible. Think about ways that make an indepdent life more manageable and when it isn´t quite so easy .... Consider the available options: Use the services of an experienced carer. A good carer will have been Police checked here in Spain, will be working legally and be insured. Incidentally the recipient of care from a non legal carer is also breaking the law. 41

WELLBEING

HOW ON EARTH

I am sure you ask yourself at times, how on earth it is possible that some of the things we hear about could possibly be happening. We can put blind eye or a deaf ear to a lot of the horrible things humans seems to be capable of doing. We can try to live happily in our personal bubbles, ignoring all things we would like to disappear. Sooner or later however reality catches up and we have to face things. How on earth is it possible that we have advanced so much, when there are still wars going on almost in every corner of the planet? How on earth is it possible that we can spend billions of dollars and pounds on medical research but are becoming sicker and sicker every year? How is it possible that we have invented communication gadgets so we can be connected all day long, but have little importance to communicate? There are many things that really don’t add up at all. Is man good, or is there a satanic personality lurking in everyone? It’s up to you to decide what it is that is really going on but I have chosen to believe that man is basically good. Wars can be started for many reasons, but mostly for economical or territorial reasons. Like many detrimental situations of our life, they are often started out of fear. Fear almost never brings forth good solutions. Medicine and medical actions have now risen to the third most common source of death in the United Sates of America. At least 10,000 English citizens, and that is a very conservative figure, die from overmedication each year. A large part of all political decisions, result in absolutely nothing beneficial, regardless of the money spent. A fatalist approach to this is to say that in a hundred years it wont matter what happens today, but what if we want to live a better life today? B u t whatabout our children? Will they be able to live a better life than us? Some answers are not available until afterwards but it is not looking very good. The action many of us are taking is simply waiting. Waiting 42

The DIRECTORY November 2017

that the wars will finally end. Waiting for the politicians. Waiting for all pains and ailments to go away or at least improve. Waiting for the invention of the perfect pill to handle all illness. Most often we wait because we worry too much about what can possibly occur. We like to wait in order to know more. We want to be able to act with safety. That is usually an incorrect strategy. We need to act in order to see where things are going and then we will know more about which decisions we need to take. When we are in physical pain, our bodies are telling us that something is wrong. Most illnesses develop little by little and need attention before they become uncontrollable. The Chinese war lord Sun Tsu said. “The defence of anything is untenable”. That goes for anything. Situations in life need to be affronted and handled, not ignored in the hope that they will go away. We have to move out of our comfort zones and face life, and life is better faced living. If you have faith in that doctors will fix any physical or mental discomfort or problem in the way cars are fixed in a garage. Think again. Nothing will happen if you are not there to make it happen. Learn more about what is going on and how your body and mind works, with the interactive book: Suicide by ignorance. Visit us at the Nerja clinic, Pies y Bienestar, Calle Pintada 73, Tel.: 722 221 299, or start doing what you can for yourself, your family, and friends using the book: Suicide because of Ignorance. From Snap Shot to Great Shot Take better action photos of dogs If you enjoy photographing your pets, and dogs, in particular, this article will help you take better action photos of dogs. Learn what camera equipment to use, the best settings, and general tips for success.

The Camera Body

To take better action photos of dogs, I recommend a camera body with a fast burst rate. From my experience, five frames per second is the minimum. If your camera has a faster frame rate than that, you are going to increase your Success rate. I personally use Nikon’s D5500 and D7100 and have great success with photographing animals in action.

The Camera Lens

Longer lenses with fixed apertures generally focus on moving subjects much faster than shorter lenses. They also keep you and your camera gear safer. Think about it. If you have a full grown Border collie running full speed right at you, you need to get the photograph and get out of the way quickly. A longer lens will give you the time you need to move once the dog starts to fill the frame. I personally use the Nikon 300mm f/4.

Setting Your Autofocus

I recommend locking your autofocus directly inDIRECTORY the centre November of the frame. 50 The 2017 When

photographing action shots of animals you don’t have time to be moving the focus point around. I also suggest using AF-C (Continuous focus mode, called Servo on Canon), which may also be called autofocus continuous, AF-Continuous. This is the setting I always use when trying to get action shots.

Set your Camera to Burst Mode Photographing Running Dogs

When I photograph dogs running, I aim to get them looking straight into my camera lens. I want the dog running directly toward me, and I focus on as much eye contact as possible. So to consistently get great photographs of dogs running in this manner, you’re going to need some help. What I do to accomplish this is have the dog owner or an assistant stand fairly far away from me. I will then position myself on my belly, using my camera bag to stabilize the lens. I try and keep my back to the sun when outdoors. This will help me get the shutter speed that I want to photograph the dog running. I shoot for 1/1250th of a second to 1/2000th. You can also try dogs jumping or catching a Frisbees. Hope you have fun with this one. Rob Rob Bell Photography. Capturing a Moment in Time. www.robbell.photography

CAS NEWS Happy Tails

Flash and Alfie finally passed their second rabies titer tests. Flash flew to her new forever home in Norway on October 11 while Alfie went to his new family in Oslo on October 19. Tiny Tim was rescued from a busy campo road hiding under a car, trying to steal cat food left out for a couple of street cats. He was only 10 weeks old and had clearly been dumped in a place where someone hoped he would be found. With the number of cars passing by it was also a risky spot for this youngster. Tim is so cute that he was chosen by a Norwegian family within 24 hours of being posted on the Internet. He, actually we, are now going through the stringent steps (vaccinations, paperwork) of getting him prepared for his flight. Ted is a sweet, six month old Springer Spaniel cross pup who was found at the entrance to the motorway in Maro. Luckily a Good Samaritan spotted Ted and rescued him before he could scamper into dangerous traffic. Harvey is another example of a wonderful young dog that was found on the streets of Caleta de Valez. Both of these pups had not been micro-chipped and owners could not be found for either of them. Fortunately, these two cuties were quickly adopted by families in Germany and went to their new lives via ground transport at the beginning of October.

Scruffs! The Costa Animal Society (CAS) held its annual dog show Scruffs on October 14 at the Plaza de EspaĂąa in Nerja. This is always our favourite event of the year. We spend most of our time on the ugly side of rescuing animals, witnessing the worst of human behaviour, so it is a true pleasure to see sixty dogs obviously loved by their human companions and returning the love in kind in an atmosphere of camaraderie and communion. A case in point is Molly. Last year she was adopted at Scruffs, one of a family of puppies who were abandoned in a manner that defies belief. This year Molly returned to Scruffs with her owner Katrinka and she captured The Jackie Memorial Cup for the Non Pedigree Best in Show. Another wonderful choice of the judges was awarding the John Peatey Memorial Cup for Best Rescue dog or bitch to Coco, a Galgo (Spanish Greyhound). Galgos in Spain suffer unspeakable horrors due to their docile nature, great speed and unfortunately great use to hunters. We encourage everyone to read up on the plight of the Galgos and see what action they can take to raise awareness on this issue. A special thanks goes out to Jorge and Jacky of the Nerja Foreigners Department for all of their help and support. All of the tables and chairs were set up and taken down again, electricity arranged for and especially we express our gratitude for use of the square which was still covered by the Feria pavilion, making what would have been a very hot day for handlers and dogs, a cool and comfortable one. Also, a big thank you to our main sponsor Veterinary Clinic San Fernando whose support for CAS runs all the year round.

All told, CAS took in â‚Ź2588 on the day, a great success. Of course, all money raised at Scruffs goes directly to aiding our rescue animals, primarily to cover vet bills and kennelling costs. Thank you also to whatever publication you are reading this in for their generous support. 59
