BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION The garden path should lead you along a beautiful and approachable route. A garden path invites you into the garden and leads you through it. Pathways are essential for any landscape. From the street to your front door, from the backdoor to the garden, from the patio to the pool. Garden paths are functional components used for getting people and garden implements from here to there without treading over muddy grounds or ruining a section of lawn by constant tread. Yet apart from function, paths can be designed attractively and placed strategically for their best possible use in your landscape and garden. Your path to a perfect pathway begins with careful assessment. You need to map out where a straight walk is required and perhaps where the path might twist and turn for a more aesthetic route around your landscape. Deciding on materials and width of the path sections is essential during the planning stage. Some paths, depending on how they are mapped out, can produce attractive effects for your garden. For instance, a path that zigzags through a narrow landscape may actually make it appear wider. LT Construction will walk with you through the whole process and will lead you to a leisurely future.

THIS MONTHS COCKTAIL Caipirinha Cocktail.

With the ongoing heat Spanish summer is offering us, it’s quite natural for people to go for long and thirst quenching drinks like Sex On the Beach or large Frozen Daiquiri cocktails. Whilst these drinks may be the perfect choice after a hot day at the beach, towards the evening pre or post dinner, one might prefer something shorter and more refreshing with a bit of a sting. With this summer having been heavily influenced by the FIFA World Cup, what could possibly be more suiting than the Brazilian national drink – the Caipirinha traditionally made with brown sugar, fresh lime and the Brazilian national spirit Cachaça. In honour of the world famous drink, and all of its thousands of fans, we created a spicier, more complex variation of the classic cocktail - The Fig and Cinnamon Caipirinha. Recipe: 2 teaspoons of a good quality Fig Marmalade ½ half a lime cut into 6 smaller pieces Crushed ice

25 ml cinnamon syrup (recipe follows) 50 ml Cachaça

Method: Firmly muddle the first three ingredients until lime wedges are juiced. Add Cachaça and stir to dissolve the fig marmalade. Add ice and stir again to chill. Top up with more ice and garnish with a fresh fig or a cinnamon stick to make the cinnamon syrup: Put 1 cup water together with 1 cup sugar and some dried cinnamon sticks. Boil on stove until the sugar is fully dissolved in the water. Remove from heat and leave to chill. Strain away the cinnamon sticks with a fine sieve and put the syrup into a container whilst discarding the remaining cinnamon. This is now ready to use in a variation of cocktails and mixed drinks! 22

REAL ESTATE GUIDE REAL ESTATE GUIDE SELLING YOUR PROPERTY

Tax Liabilities

Many vendors are unaware of their tax liabilities when selling their property so here is some general information. This information is merely a guide and you should consult your lawyer or Asesoría with regard to your own particular circumstances.

Capital Gains Tax

When you sell your house, you are required to pay capital gains tax on any profit you make on the sale. The profit is the difference between the amount declared on your Escritura when you bought the property and the amount declared when you sell. It is important to note that no account will be taken of any cash payment made at the time of purchase. You can deduct the costs for buying and selling the house from any profit made. The rules are different for foreign residents and foreign non-residents.

Foreign non-residents

Foreign non-residents pay 21% on the profit from the sale. On the day of completion, you will be charged 3% on the full declared sale price - this is part payment of the 21% to be paid on the profit at a later date when requested to do so by the tax office.

Foreign residents

To qualify as a Spanish resident it is not enough to have a certificate of residency; you have to be able to prove that you have been living in Spain for 3 or more years by providing the previous 3 years’ tax returns and also prove that you intend to continue living in Spain. Your lawyer or Asesoría can then apply to the tax office for a certificate which states that you are exempt from the normal retention of 3%. This rule only applies to your primary residence. Although you pay nothing on the day of completion, you are still required to pay 21% tax on the profit from the sale. The sale is declared in your following year’s tax declaration and if, within 2 years of the sale you invest all of the proceeds from the sale into another primary home in Spain, you will not have to pay any tax. If you do not then you will pay 21% on what is not spent on your next home.

Foreign residents aged 65 and over

If you are selling your primary residence you are not liable to pay capital gains tax provided you can prove that you have lived in Spain for 3 years or more and intend to continue living here. If you intend to return to your home country then you will pay 3% tax on the full declared price on completion and then in your next year’s tax declaration, you can claim this money back from the tax office. If you don’t declare your taxes in Spain but can prove that you earn less than 11,200 Euros per year then you are exempt from paying capital gains tax.

Plusvalía Tax

The plusvalía tax is based on the increase in the value of your land from the date you bought it to the date you sell it and it is calculated by your local Town Hall. Each Town Hall determines the amount of plusvalía to be levied on each house sale. The original purchase price and the sale price of the property do not have any effect on the plusvalía tax as it is calculated according to the rateable value of the land and the number of years it has been in the ownership of the vendor. What is Wellness ? ‘The condition of good physical and mental health, especially when maintained by proper diet, exercise and habits´ – American Heritage Dictionary

Wellness is about waking up every morning and having enough time, energy & freedom to live the life you want! Key to optimum wellness 1. Balance your diet: You need to get enough of the right food including colourful fruit & vegetables, protein, good carbohydrates and just enough good fats for the taste you want. You also need vitamins, minerals and fibre that your cells need for good health 2. Exercise regularly: Regular exercise can help you look and feel your best. Exercise conditions your heart and relieves stress and makes it easier to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight 3. Drink lots of water: Your body is about two-thirds water and in an average day you lose at least one pint of water without excessive sweating. To feel your best you should aim to drink 6-8 glasses a day Steps for achieving optimum wellness: • • • • •

Dreaming BIG!

In this third instalment I will examine the topic of dreaming BIG!

PART 3

A sadness is that too many adults don’t dream big enough and this limits their success potential. Parents and teachers can take much of the blame for this because they don’t always encourage the young children to use their imaginations to the fullest – to dream big and without limits. They often inhibit a child’s use of the most powerful resource they have for future success - imagination! Consider this; without using your imagination you can never find the solution to a challenge.

As children, we use our imaginations all of the time as we play, as we discover new things to occupy our playtime. We create whatever world we want to play in using the power of imagination. Think big and you will get more than you think you can! You say, “I dream too big”. I say, “You think too small!” Don’t allow small thinkers to stop you dreaming big and without limits. A common ‘success inhibitor’ concerns money – specifically earnings. Many people have an internal glass ceiling on how much they will allow themselves to earn. Try the following exercise to discover if you are one of them. Exercise - Dreaming BIG 1. Think of how much money you would like to earn next year. 2. Now double that amount – how does that feel (write down what you feel) 3. Now treble it – how does that feel (write it down) How does it feel to dream big? If you are not comfortable dreaming big then you can improve this by simply practicing dreaming big but start by moving yourself in manageable chunks. So, you have started to DREAM BIG! Now do this exercise for other areas of your life – do it big and do it in style! In part 4 I ask the most important ‘simple-difficult’ question. Les Meehan is a ‘Success Behaviour’ coach and trainer to MNC’s, SME’s and individuals. GIG GUIDE & MUSIC

MUSIC SCENE

This month featured band is The Money Makers. You can expect a great night watching The Money Makers as they usually play a whopping 80 songs in 2 hours, but have more than 130 ready to play. The Money Makers play music from the 50s to the present. From Elvis Presley, The Chordettes and Chuck Berry to current day artists such as Katy Perry, Maroon 5 or Bruno Mars. All of their songs are popular and wellknown from The Rolling Stones, Bon Jovi, The Beatles, Whitesnake, Boney M, ABBA, Michael Jackson, Tom Jones,

Europe, Radiohead, A-ha, Nirvana, Jamiroquai, Rihanna, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Nickelback, Pink Floyd to name but a few. The Money Makers formed 4 years ago at the hands of Jose Correa and Javi Malagamba, drummer and guitarist/keyboard. It took two years to idealise the band. The members of the band are the same as another Malaga band called Invaders (who are a tribute to Iron Maiden), except for the singer. As a result of having pay for a rehearsal venue, they decided it was a great idea to play commercial songs to help fund the growth of the Invaders band. So they merged the original idea of Jose and Javi, with the need to pay for the premises with a more commercial band than Invaders.

The Money Makers have been growing ever since from humble beginnings, the band is in full swing. Quaintly Spanish Dear readers, I’m a micro-brewer, a writer & a translator and when you read this I will just have gotten hitched! After we decided to get married, being a girl, I got all excited about finding The Dress. However finding said Dress in Spain proved trickier than I had expected. One of the first things I did was check out a few bridal shops in Malaga. I’d start by saying that I wanted something ‘a little informal’ and the nice ladies in the shops would ignore me and my silly suggestions completely and start kitting me out in a variety of lavish ballgowns which would have been absolutely perfect if I’d been marrying, say, King Felipe in a cathedral, but rather less suitable for the laid-back country wedding I was planning. After a few of these encounters I decided Spanish bridal shops were probably not going to work out for me, also because I’m almost six feet tall. Perhaps I should have something made: wouldn’t it be lovely if I got married in a flamenco-style dress?! It doesn’t get more Spanish than that and I’ve always wanted one, so I’d be killing two birds with one stone. I found a Spanish designer in Sevilla who makes the most amazing dresses. We chatted via mail and she was all excited. I talked to my mum, who decided to fly in all the way from the Netherlands. So I booked a hotel, confirmed my appointment with the designer, picked up mum from airport and away we went. Bridal Road Trip! Surely, I’d find The Dress now, what could possibly go wrong? Well... When we turned up at the appointed time at the appointed place, the designer was nowhere to be found. There was a shop-assistant who had never heard of me and the sample flamenco dress I’d come all this way to try wasn’t there either. I tersely explained about confirming the appointment only two days before and how my mum had flown all that way. The shop assistant shrugged and went back to texting her boyfriend. As my mum had come almost 3000 kilometers I had to try on something. Anything! So in desperation I let the shop assistant stuff me quite forcefully into a ridiculous dress at least two sizes too small. Not a good look. It took the fun out of the whole bridal-dress-shopping-thing. I started to despair I’d ever find anything remotely suitable.

However, a few weeks later I passed the Cudeca charity shop in Torre del Mar and on a whim decided to have a look as they often get people’s old wedding gowns. The very first one I tried was absolutely perfect. And I actually got an impromptu marriage proposal from a passing stranger! So this dress is going back to Cudeca, if anybody else wants to wear it, it’s certainly been very lucky for me! Salud! Liz Luyben

recipe BY tINA Simple Salmon with Garlic & Thyme

I vary this simple recipe slightly most times but to keep it simple, you will need: Salmon steaks Fresh thyme Olive oil

Garlic Salt and Pepper

Slice thinly 1 garlic clove per salmon steak and put oil in pan cook lightly to flavour the oil then turn up the heat. Sprinkle steaks with salt and paper to taste. Flash cook them for approx 2 mins on each side, remove from pan and add thyme, lower heat and simmer for 1 minute. Serve salmon and spoon oil mixture over.

BUSINESS MARKETING

bUSINESS MARKETING TIPS Social Media

B

OK, so social media may not be everybody’s cup of tea. Perhaps you don’t see it as relevant to your business? Think again. In a recent survey questioning 3000 marketers, 86% indicated that social media is important for their business. 97% of these marketers currently used social media for their business, and 79% had integrated their social media marketing into their traditional marketing strategies. This goes to show that social media needs to be seen as part of your promotional & marketing campaign, not a casual bystander. The purpose of using social media for business is twofold, to increase your online brand, and to drive people to your website, or place of work. Most of us these days have a Facebook page, and so are more than aware of its advantages in terms of sharing information and gaining new friends. The same can be said for Facebook business pages. Use them to promote new products, special offers, mention your customers, interact with them regularly, use your page as a customer service tool and generally build up your following. Ensure you set up your page as a business page, NOT a personal page (Facebook can and often do shut down pages if they have not been set up correctly). Make you page fun, it’s not all sell sell sell. Perhaps run a competition, and see the ‘likes’ come rolling in. Facebook currently has 1.28 billion active users worldwide, of whom 31 million are in the UK and 13 million in Spain. In fact, Britons are the 2nd most prolific Facebook and Twitter users in Europe. Twitter is another effective business marketing tool. Often business who may struggle with Facebook excel on Twitter. Whilst business to consumer FB pages often do very well, many business to business companies prefer the contact making opportunities provided by Twitter. Don’t feel pressured into thinking that you need to have a business page on every social media platform. Choose which works for you. Facebook is fantastic for business to consumer companies, Twitter and LinkedIn are perfect for B2B. Pinterest is a must for companies with fab products and great photos, Google + works for everyone. Choose your best fit and run with it. In areas with large numbers of ex-pats, social media is relied on heavily by the local community as an information sharing hub, so don’t stand on the sidelines, be part of it! 44
