BUSINESS MATTERS
BUSINESS MATTERS So what is branding? There are thousands of definitions of “branding”. One of the best definitions of branding I’ve seen is that –
“Branding is what sticks in your mind about a product, service, or organization — whether or not, at that particular moment, you bought or did not buy.” So, for example – Does a picture pop into your mind about a business, such as its logo or colours? Think about the logo, such as McDonalds — recognizable the world over – the golden arches against a red background. And when you see it, do you imagine – a burger in a bun with chips; or Ronald McDonald the clown character used as the mascot of the McDonald’s fast-food restaurant chain?
What picture pops into the mind of people of your business?
Sometimes it’s not the logo but another visual that comes to mind — even packaging. For instance, I couldn’t tell you what the Tiffany logo looks like, but the instant I see the iconic Tiffany blue box, I know who we’re talking about. Certain things immediately come to mind, such as high quality jewellery and luxury home goods — things no one actually needs, but so many desire
What is the visual that comes into the mind of people about your business? Or perhaps it is the business’s approach to customizing its product. Mention the name Starbucks and immediately coffee comes to mind. Now, I might not even like Starbucks coffee, but when travelling I will always look for a Starbucks. I know I can expect a certain level of quality. The coffee will be fresh — not a stale witches brew. But it’s more than coffee I think of — it’s that I can get it the way I want it. No matter where I am, Starbucks will have hot, steamed low-fat milk to cut the strength. I can ask for a ‘cafe au lait’ made half with steamed milk, and half with brewed coffee. And I will get it — even though it’s not on the menu. Why? Because Starbucks aims to give you coffee the way you want it.
Do you aim to give your customers the product or service that they want? So when you ask the question “what is branding” — it is something that triggers associations in our minds. Branding is about creating an identity. It’s what sets one business apart from another. In short, it tells us what we can expect from that company. It’s about the perception people have of the business.
What is the identity & perception that sets your business apart from another? As a small or medium sized business, you need to make sure that people remember you and can answer the question –
‘What was the name of that business/company/restaurant?’ That is what branding does! So, if you think you need help with your branding, contact Image & Profile to arrange an initial discussion. Currency News ´For those of you who have seen the film Groundhog Day, you will understand when I say that this month pretty much mirrors my comments from the last edition. Sterling continues to trade at between 1.36 & 1.38, not quite at the heights we saw last month when we were talking 1.40 to 1.42, but all the same, an improvement over recent years. Industry speculation still forecasts sterling to reach as high as 1.50 by the end of next year/beginning of 2017. Trigger to watch for is the hike in UK interest rates. This will see investors pouring into the UK and immediately push sterling higher. In the shorter-term, I expect sterling to go back beyond the 1.40 mark as we enter the winter period. Over to Greece (my favourite topic!), Tsipras was sworn in for a 2nd time as Greek Prime Minister. Whilst this is no great shakes when it comes to headline news, at least it brings some semblance of stability for the euro – for now!!! On the downside, news from the US indicates that they still are putting the chances of a Grexit at 2030% over the next 12 months & Tsipras´s decision to remain in coalition with the far right Independent party casts a shadow, especially as the Greek Independent party has threatened to ´ unleash a wave of Syrian refugees across Europe if Greece´s creditors do not offer more help´ - hardly the words of a mature political party power-sharing an EU member state. Anyway, sorry to bore you with more stories surrounding Greece, but in recent months, it remains the most influential aspect of European politics which in turn are affecting exchange rates. For more information call Melanie Radford at Currencies Direct.See their advert under Currency Transfers.
Legal Matters
Spanish property – Independent advice When you are selling property in Spain it is important to get independent legal advice. There are important obligations on the seller and you should be aware of these. The tax authorities are now much more vigilant and you will not want to be looking over your shoulder once you have sold the property. With the property market truly picking up for every purchase a resident or nonresident has sold. A Certificate of Fiscal residence will be required if you have been here for some time and this must be obtained prior to the sale. The notary will not accept that you have been tax resident here without this document and you would therefore be subject to a 3% retention on the sale price. This 3% is taken on account from non residents and any additional Capital gains tax should be paid. A property lawyer can calculate the sum you will receive on the day and ensure that you are not left with any ongoing liabilities after the sale. If you fail to do so fines could accrue without your knowledge and affect bank accounts or other assets. If you have not provided forwarding address even old traffic or speeding fines can suddenly pop up in your bank account in Spain so it does pay to ensure that you have the right information about selling property particularly if you surrender your residential status. Prevention is always better than cure and it is best to get advice from experienced property lawyers and accountants whether you are buying or selling property. Some understanding of the purchase procedure and the taxes, costs and fees of buying is very helpful before finding your property. A preliminary consultation with an independent specialist means that you can enter the property market with a better idea of the legal and financial implications of your purchase. What is Life Coaching
Life coaching is one-to-one consultation with someone who wants guidance in making life changes. Although the client may decide to hire a coach for a particular issue (like finding a new career), the process is designed to help the person assess their entire lives. The life coach assists the client in creating the life they truly desire and achieving life balance. A coach trains their clients in the life skills they need, provides a sounding board when choices are faced, helps them move beyond selfimposed limitations, and supports and encourages when challenges arise. In contrast to therapy, life coaching is an interactive process between equals. The coach has an ability to listen, clarify, and guide the client from an unbiased perspective. However, the process puts the “problem” into the larger context of the person’s entire life. A personal coach does not try to “fix” anyone. Instead, he or she listens carefully and deeply, asks many questions to gain clarification of the real issues, and then uses a variety of methods to guide the person in making positive choices and life changes. A life coach helps their clients gain balance in body, mind, emotions, and spirit.
What is Heal Your Life Coaching? While much of the Heal Your Life Coaching is the same as Life Coaching in other coaching programs, there are some important differences. One of the fundamentals of this type of coaching is following philosophy of Louise Hay who write the book ‘You Can Heal your Life’. She believes that loving yourself is part of the solution, regardless of the part of your life you want to change. So teaching clients to use mirror work and other techniques to love and accept themselves is part of coaching people from this framework. In addition, this is a spiritual philosophy, so we know that there is a Power and Presence within us that guides and directs us- we don’t have to do all the work! In this approach to coaching, BEING is more important than DOING, as you help clients practice the Law of Attraction. As a HYL coach, you assist clients in connecting with their Knowing Self, the spiritual or intuitive part of themselves that truly does have all the answers. Heal Your Life Coaches promote the development of inner skills like meditation, visualization, and affirmations incorporating the Law of Attraction concept is a part of many coaching order. Many people talk about what they want and never take the steps to get there. There are many different reasons: limiting beliefs, not believing it’s possible, lack of emotional, mental and spiritual skills, not being able to set priorities and manage activities, and procrastination. Coaching session can be carried out by telephone or skype. You can find more information on Tel: 603 771 639 www.meiflynn.com Facebook.com/MeiFlynn

Quaintly Spanish RECIPE BY TINA Hair cuts
I remember back when I lived in Amsterdam I’d go to the hairdresser about ever 6 weeks. I’d make an appointment, show up, quickly glance at the pictures in some kind of gossip rag, in and out in about an hour. I never recognise any Dutch celebs because I simply never got the time to finish a magazine. In Spain I don’t go until my hair looks an absolute unholy mess, mostly because it can take all day. Seriously: All. Day. On my most recent visit I got in at the appointed time, got my copy of Hola! magazine and waited. An hour and a half later I knew all about the private island Princess Caroline of Monaco’s son got married on, but nothing hair-related had happened yet. Or at least not to me, because in the mean time three other women had wandered in and gotten their hair cut. So I read about the blushing bride’s shoes. And the bridesmaids’. And what everybody ate. Two hours in, I got to move to another chair and they covered me in plastic. Surely it must be nearly over now? Please? But nope. At least they went out and got some cold beers, which was good as sitting wrapped in plastic is sweaty work. In the end, it took a little under five hours. And I’m pretty sure I will be able to recite the menu of Pierre of Monaco’s wedding banquet until my dying day as unfortunately there wasn’t much else to read. After my escape I went for a much needed drink and ran into a Spanish friend who said ‘why does your hair look like a dead parrot’. I may start cutting my own hair… Liz Luyben is the head brewer at La Cabra Azul Brewery in Comares and a (beer)writer.
