ALARM SYSTEMS Protecting Your Home From Break-Ins A break-in always has a major impact on your and your family’s sense of safety and wellbeing. Help protect your home from break-ins with Home Security Tips from ¡PERFECT ALARM! S.L. Tip No. 7: Alarm Push Notifications A Push Notification is an App running in the background of your smartphone, which alerts you in the form of a pop-up alert. Motion detection alarm push notifications are a very useful feature as you get an instant alert on your mobile device much faster than an email alert. Our quality surveillance cameras with a bright IR-Light, can determine when an intruder is entering a defined zone or even just crossing a virtual line on your property sending a pop-up alert to your smartphone wherever you are. You can use any Smart Phone or other mobile device, on WiFi, 3G or 4G, it doesn’t matter. It could be an indoor IP camera that you are using as a baby monitor, an outdoor security camera monitoring your backyard, garage or your alarm system. 5
¡GIVE ME FIVE!
Ladies, Gentlemen and Kurt,
Welcome to the inaugural column from ¡Give Me Five! animal charity. By way of introduction my name is Scott Houston and I’ll be the ringmaster of the festivities. So what is ¡Give Me Five! you ask. ¡Give Me Five! is a registered charity in Spain established by DentaDanés dental clinic in Maro. Our mission is to raise money to be disbursed to various animal rescue/welfare groups on the ground. What makes ¡Give Me Five! unique is that money is raised by selling memberships. For 50€ (27.4 cents per day annually) you can become a member and you’ll receive a 5% discount on your dental treatment for the next six months at DentaDanés. But wait, the fun doesn’t end there! We have a growing number of businesses that will also offer a 5% discount on their products or services upon presentation of your ¡Give Me Five! membership card. Fancy some new patio furniture, stop by Muebles Piramides Puerto in Caleta de Velez. How about a new hair style, just stop by Donna Monroe’s II in Nerja. Need to put your animals in kennels while you recover from elective plastic surgery, call Seacrest. Looking for the best cocktails in Nerja, go to bar H2O in Burriana Beach. All of these fine establishments honour the Give Me Five 5% discount. And for our business partners, all standard size ads in our publications are Free! Most importantly, what happens to the Membership fees? At the end of each accounting quarter, this money will be distributed to various animal rescue groups east of Málaga including: Valle Verde Animal Rescue in Almuñecar, APA Estación Esperanza and Costa Animal Society in the Nerja - Frigiliana area, TAIL in Torrox and Axarquia Animal Rescue. TRADITIONAL BARBERS SHAVING Apart from the fact that it is a great experience, the traditional barbers shave with hot towels and a cut throat razor is very hard working in itself and great for your skin. The shave is much closer than you are likely to achieve in front of the bathroom mirror, and most men regard it as their own version of a skin maintenance programme. During the traditional barbers shave, the blade removes up to 4 layers of dead skin cells – so it is like an exfoliation treatment. The shave itself is especially good for getting rid of in-growing hairs as the cut throat razor literally pulls each of them out. The great news is a traditional cut throat razor shave is now available with Alana at Rumours Hair Salon in Puente don Manuel. Guys get yourself booked in or ladies treat your man to a great experience. Recently created is the Rumours Hair Salon VIP room, great for privacy or for special occassions you can book the room so you and your friends can all get ready together.
Rumours Beauty Salon has been open for six months now and clients are enjoying treatments in the fantastic purpose built salon. Sophie and her team are experienced in making you feel comfortable and relaxed whilst you enjoy the treatment. Manicure, Pedicure, facials, massages even Spa days.

LAWYERS (ABOGADOS) Changing your Children’s country of residence – Child Abduction The summer holidays are coming to an end and for some families this means the end of a stay with a parent who lives or works in a different country. Perhaps the children want to remain in the UK after a holiday there, or they may want to move to Spain where they have enjoyed a long holiday visit with the non-custodial parent. Any change made without the agreement of both parents can lead to lengthy and stressful Hague Convention Child Abduction proceedings. Sadly, some parents think that they can apply for custody after they have moved to a new country or returned to their home country. However if you don´t have agreement about moving you must firstly apply to the courts in the country of your “habitual residence” for leave to remove the children. The European definition of residence for children is the country where they have school and friends and become settled. The younger the child the more quickly they will acquire a country of residence. For the parent who wishes to leave the country of habitual residence there is a heavy burden of proof to show that it is in the best interests of the children. In cases already dealt with in courts throughout Spain and the islands, we were able to show that the children would benefit from the move because they were returning to their home country with good opportunities for education, and where the family had a strong supporting network. The financial circumstances also need to be proved showing that the mother or father who has custody of the children can work or be better supported in the other country. Each case is different but in all cases it is important to propose or agree a proper programme of visits for the parent who does not have custody. This should also include telephone, email or Skype contact to ensure that moving country has a limited effect on the parental relationships with the children. As with many aspects of Family and Inheritance law, prevention is always better than cure and it is definitely best to seek advice before changing your country of residence with your children. For confidential information on your particular circumstances contact family@ decottalaw.net or telephone 952 527014 20

Skiing season is just around the corner and Andalucía offers the combination of skiing and beach! As one of Europe’s highest resorts and typically has a long season. Traditionally the season starts around the end of November running through to the first week of May. With some of the highest peaks in Europe, not to mention the highest concentration of peaks over 3,000m in the country. The ski terrain is overlooked by the jagged glacier-formed Veleta peak at 3,398m, Spain’s third highest after Aneto (3,404m) in the Pyrenees. Due to the altitude, the ski slopes are above the tree line and generally take the form of ski fields rather than narrow prepared tracks - something that favours the more nervous skier in particular as well as generally giving a sense of confidence all round, especially for off piste fanatics! The Sierra Nevada ski resort offers its visitors a wide and ever expanding range of facilities as well as a ski terrain to suit skiers and boarders of all standards. Families will enjoy quality children’s facilities such as the Mirlo Blanco recreation zone, with activities including Ski Bike, Inner Tubing, Ice Skating and a “RollerSled” (a cross between a roller-coaster and bobsled). The Crèche and Dreamland Garden are well-run establishments with fully trained staff to look after children up to six years old. Pre-booking is recommended and can be arranged.
TRAVEL NEWS
SIERRA NEVADA - SNOWY MOUNTAIN RANGE
An important factor, which very few resorts can boast, is that you are practically guaranteed sunshine throughout your stay! Being so far south, the climate is superb for brushing-up on the deepest ski tan you are likely to get anywhere! Visitors are consistently stunned at how the snow lasts during the typically beautiful sunny days. Much of this is due to the resort organisers working extremely hard at preparing the runs each and every night. By packing the snow down, even the shallowest of snow bases may be maintained for several weeks even if it does not snow for long periods. In addition to this, the resort is equipped with one of the most advanced snow making systems in existence. There is a wide range of places to stay, from self catering apartments, chalet catered accommodation and various hotel options to suit all budgets. Skiing equipment can be hired from various centres at very reasonable prices with packages to include ski passes and lessons for all abilities. Sierra Nevada’s is a fantastic day out, even if you are not a skier the village offers a wide range of restaurants offering great menu del dias. If you require any further information on Sierra Nevada or other European/Worldwide skiing destinations, please do not hesitate to contact carolynhasson@triangletravel.co.uk

Are You a Great Thinker?
PIES Y BIENESTAR I don’t know if you’ve noticed but many of us think too much which can be damaging to our health and be disturbing to people around us. Thinking too much may be mans deadliest decease. Hang on a second, what do you mean by that? What about the great thinkers that brought the world forward to where we are? The legacy of the great thinkers There has been some great thinkers, Einstein for one. He said that there are only two things in the universe that are infinite, the universe itself and the stupidity of man. But there are various classes of thought and I am neither talking about the accomplishments of great men, nor of the inventors of Glyfosphate and GMO food that is slowly killing us off. I am referring to inner thought mechanisms. When thinking, we should be the ones that are thinking, not let our mind race on more or less uncontrolled. Is it possible to turn off the auto pilot? Deep down inside, we are endowed with a subconscious part of the mind that can be seen as a defence system that acts for us whenever it’s needed. Sometimes it does a good job but most often not. This personal auto pilot is not easy to turn off. We meet a person we have never seen before and instantly we form an opinion about that person from a summary of perceptions and subconscious memories of prior incidents. We judge the person to be dangerous, poor, devious, repulsive, attractive, and other traits which we actually don’t have sufficient data in order to know. Judging the world around us with differences identities and similarities Once I asked a lady in the street for directions, she jumped heavily backwards, explaining,
“I thought you was gonna rob me”. The auto pilot had stepped in to protect her from a potential mugger. Instead of seeing what is there, we train our minds to think for us. Even if there are 10,000 or more politicians, when we read in the papers that a number of them are corrupt, the automatic thought response is “all politicians are corrupt”. Only the conscious thought can differentiate well. The automatic response deals in generalities. When some immigrant receives large social benefits without having to work as hard as us... the grapevine says: “all immigrants are experts at extorting money from social services already when they arrive in rubber dinghies, half dead from cold and starvation. True? How often do you meet someone you don’t like at first, and after a while you become really good friends. The first impression, when you are conscious, comes from an observation of what is there in front of you. When you are less conscious it is a subconsciously filtered idea of what you possibly have in front of you. That way a kitten may become a lion and a lion can be a puppy. Suffering the effects of our own habits in a fear driven society Freedom is more FREEDOM TO than FREEDOM FROM and nothing provokes unfounded preconceptions more than fear. Hope for the future gets replaced by fear for the future, creativity gets replaced by conformity. Fear of death block us from living in the present. So we are burdened or suffering from thoughts of potential gloom and misery before they occur. Stress and bad habits divert us from being our normal happy selves and destroy our bodies. Even it sounds impossible you can train yourself to be a true great thinker, one who is present, seeing and handling what is actually there, achieving and maintaining good health, bodily, mentally and socially. Start with establishing good bodily health. It is required in order to take charge of an uncontrolled and inhibitive mind. Life is in you today and NOW is the time to be and to act. Call +34 722188811 or come and see us at Pies y Bienestar on Calle Pintada 73 in Nerja. 43

Currency News Are you like me, a little tired of Brexit forever being the main topic of conversation wherever you go? Cannot escape it though can we ! EC President, Jean-Claude Junker warned earlier this week of a potential conflict between eastern and western member states of the EU. More countries such as Hungary are becoming increasingly vocal on the subject of immigration whilst the likes of Poland & Romania insist the UK must continue to allow free access to its citizens. If the remaining EU member states continue in this vein it will be interesting to be a fly on the wall when Germany & France reiterate their position re unlimited access to Europe for refugees. Back to the UK, the Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee held interest rates for the time being. Combined with positive retail growth figures, this has led to a stabalising of GBP to Euro at least in the short-term. Expect to see a degree of volatility return in November when the committee meet again and the autumn budget is announced Here in Spain, figures released last week show that in 2014, Spanish companies with overseas subsideries, employed a total of 656,000 people & earnt 183,000,000 euros. At the same time, foreign companies here in Spain employees 1,273,000 people, earning 464,000,000 euros. Another indication of whether in or out of the EU, the UK remains part of an ever growing global economy. In simple terms we (the UK) rely on ´them´ as much as they rely on us. Welcome to the new feature of Gardening Tips. This month is about preparing your garden for autumn. 1) Plant up containers with winter bedding such as pansies, violas and polyanthus, evergreens such as ivy and autumn bulbs as hyacinth, tulips, freesia, iris.

3) Propagate currants, gooseberries and ornamentals such as roses, cornus, forsythia, from hardwood cuttings once leaves have fallen. 4) Start spraying with copper to prevent disease as botrytis and mildew. 5) Start using mulch of straw or compost

SPANISH CUISINE A. Sangria. This along with cerveza is by far the most popular drink of Spain. Made correctly it is refreshing and potent. Sangria now comes in many forms but the traditional one is red, with a misture of red wine, spirits, spices and fruit. Sangría must always be served ice-cold. If serving from a punch bowl, stir it in the bowl before ladling it into a glass. Finally, if possible, drink it on the beach - there is no finer feeling.
Recipe 2 bottles dry garnacha red wine 1 bottle dry rosado (Spanish rosé) 12 ounces orange soda (preferably a less-sweet brand such as Spanish KAS or San Pellegrino aranciata, or use Fanta) 1 ounce Torres orange liqueur or Triple Sec 2 ounces Romate or other Spanish brandy 1 tablespoon sugar, or to taste 2 apples, cored and diced, for garnish 2 oranges, cut into wedges, for garnish In a large vessel, combine all liquid ingredients. Stir with a wooden spoon. Let rest for 5 minutes. Taste, and add sugar if desired, stirring to dissolve. Refrigerate for at least four hours, preferably overnight. To serve, fill glasses with ice. Pour 5 ounces sangria into each glass and garnish with diced apple and orange wedges.

Q. What is the most popular drink of Spain.?
Are Single-Page Websites the Way Forward?
As technology advances and mobile searches are increasing, many small businesses today are choosing singlepage websites over complex, multi-page websites. Single-page websites, due to their simplicity, make navigation on-the-go much easier in comparison to traditional websites by having all the information users need on one page.
Studies have also shown that singlepage websites provide higher conversion rates than multi-page websites, whether it may be newsletter subscriptions, product sales, contact forms, etc. This is because single-page website work much like landing pages, which are designed to capture leads.
These single-page sites are also a lowmaintenance option and can be updated quite easily. There is also a lot of flexibility for future changes, whether it may be content or design. However, they don’t come without drawbacks. One of the biggest problems single-page websites face is the difficulty of optimising the site to rank in search results. With all of your content on one page, it makes it difficult for search engines to crawl your website. If Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is important to your business, then a single-page website isn’t for you. Another drawback is tracking analytics. With all of your content and features on one page, it’s difficult to track the overall performance as well as seeing what parts of your website are attractive to users and what features aren’t important or useful.

Single-page websites are a great solution for small businesses - but it’s not the way to go for businesses who need good SEO. Call Eleanor Makin at Quantum23 to find out more about websites. See ad under Websites. 47
Yogi ADVENTURE I’ve kayaked to La Cueva de Las Palomas (Cave of the Doves) before. It’s at the tip of Cerro Gordo and is only accessible by sea. It was a schlep by kayak and I got seasick paddling back across La Herradura’s large bay. So when my friend Louis suggested checking out the cave by speedboat, I jumped at the chance.
We picked up the boat at Marina del Este – a beautiful hidden marina, snuggled between La Herradura and Almuñecar. As we were hiring without a licence, the guy demoed the boat. And after a safety briefing, we packed the essentials - cava, snorkelling gear and sun cream – before heading off.
There’s a truly magical feel – above and below the water. We had the boat for 4 hours so headed back after exploring for a while. We could probably have gone on to Cantarrijan Beach though. Apparently the boat fit 8, but I wouldn’t recommend more than 4 to be comfortable. And for 4 hours it cost €150€220, depending on whether it’s high or low season. So it’s not cheap. But it’s a great way to see the coastline.
During the demo, we reached a decent speed outside the harbour. But when we got in, it wasn’t quite so juicy. This, it transpired, was plastic netting stuck in the motor, which we only noticed later after snorkelling*. We whizzed across the bay, ogling at the properties on Punta de La Mona, and passing several other boats. Then once we’d arrived near the cave, we moored the boat to a buoy, donned our snorkels, and swam in. The cave is small but perfectly formed. Inside, the water is aquamarine with incredible visibility, and the reefs shine with orange coral and ‘tomate del mar’. The sloping rock, which emerges to form the back of the cave is streaked bright purple with plant life. 48

Although this tiny coastal village, which belongs to Nerja, has only around 760 inhabitants, it is home to two of Malaga province’s most famous sites: the Nerja caves and the Cerro Gordo natural park. In addition to these two well-known landmarks, Maro has a wealth of historical buildings, including an old sugar cane factory, which is now little more than a ruin and the Águila aqueduct, both of which can be seen when driving from the village to the Nerja caves. Nerja Caves
Although called the Nerja Caves (las Cuevas de Nerja), geographically they are located in Maro. A modern walkway just beyond a botanical garden located in the same site as the caves connects them to the centre of the village. The caves were discovered on 12th January 1959 by five local boys who had gone potholing in the area known as ‘La Mina.’ They are said to have removed some stalactites, only to discover an enormous cave littered with skeletons and ceramic pots. They ran home to tell their families and friends and a later visit by scientists really unearthed the enormity and importance of the boys’ discovery. The original founders have met at the cave on 12th January every

year, although one of them, José Luis Barbero, passed away in 2007. There is a sculpture commemorating the five at the entrance to the caves. Today the caves are one of Malaga province’s most visited attractions and home to the International Festival of Music and Dance which runs throughout July. The road from Maro centre up to the caves is a must-see for any visitors, as it takes in the ruins of an old sugar-cane factory, one of many built in the Axarquía area in the 16th Century, as well as the El Águila aqueduct. Although Romanesque in style, it was only built at the end of the 19th Century to carry water OUT AND ABOUT Maro
to the sugar factory, as well as for irrigation purposes. It is still in use today to irrigate the vast agricultural area on which much of Maro’s economy depends. Although neither site is open to the public, they are both worth the drive to learn about the area’s industrial past. Other buildings of note in Maro are the Molino de papel (former paper mill) and watchtower, to the west of the village. Maro centre itself is perched high up on a cliff and does not have direct access to beaches. The small plaza is a great place to stop and have a tapa or coffee and the 17th Century Church of Nuestra Señora de las Maravillas is worth a look. It is on and around the plaza that Maro’s annual fair (Feria) takes place between 7th and 9th September, as well as the increasingly popular ‘Maroween,’ (Maro + Halloween!) which combines the Spanish public holiday of All Saint’s Day on 1st November and Halloween on 31st October. Locals and visitors flock to this almost cult-like event, aiming to have the most extravagant and of course, spookiest, costumes to enter the fancy-dress competition. The ghoulish atmosphere is added to by smoke from roast chestnuts and ‘boniatos asados,’ (baked sweet potatoes), which are traditionally eaten at the time of year and make up the gastronomic part of the festivities. The nearest beaches are a short drive down the steep cliff-road, but the views and crystalclear waters, as well as opportunities for snorkelling, diving and other water-sports, make them popular with locals and tourists alike in summer months. It is advisable 55
to contact a water-sports company in neighbouring Nerja or La Herradura to find out more about activities. The Cerro Gordo cliffs divide Maro and neighbouring La Herradura, and are one of Andalucía’s most important nature reserves. The area was given special status by the Junta de Andalucía in 1989. There is little in the way of shops in Maro itself and there is no bank, so make sure you have cash on you before visiting! The caves will take credit card payment, but don’t expect the few bars and restaurants to do so. However, one shop which will grab the attention of any visitor is the Talisman silversmith and art gallery, owned by a Spanish silversmith and his American artist wife. The shop has been on the main street, Calle Real, since 1991 and is a short walk from the plaza. A tourist train, known as the ‘Cuevatren,’ runs a regular daily service between Nerja, the caves and Maro and buses from Malaga, Torre del Mar and Nerja also go to the caves and the town. For timetables visit: www.guianerja.com/cueva-tren (train) and www.alsa.es for buses.
de Europa (there is no tourist information office in Maro, but some information about the local area is available at the caves). The itineraries include a coastal route taking in the old watchtowers from Nerja to La Herradura and another which guides the visitor around the historical buildings of Maro. There are further walking routes in the natural park which surrounds the caves.
A number of walking itineraries are also available from the tourist information centre near the Balcón For accommodation, there are a few private-rental apartments, a couple of small hotels in the town centre and camping just outside. The well-known Al-Andalus hotel and restaurant is located near to the caves. With spectacular views and so much local history crammed into such a tiny village, small but perfectly formed Maro is well worth a visit! Written by Jennie Rhodes 56
