Currency News

GBP/EUR, GBP/USD rocket as BoE hints at interest rate hike Latest currency news: As well as speculation regarding the monetary policy outlooks for the UK, US and Eurozone, there has also been the threat of nuclear war and some extreme weather for the currency markets to react to. The past month has seen GBP/EUR slide to an eight-year low of €1.1217, but has now spiked to an eight-week high of €1.1221. GBP/USD has bounced from a low of US$1.2786 mid-August to a one-year high of US$1.3338. EUR/USD climbed from US$1.1893 to US$1.2087, although it has now fallen to trade around US$1.1893. What’s been happening? The pound dropped to an eight-year low against the euro towards the end of August, as nervous investors bought the safe EUR following another missile test from North Korea. The euro also climbed higher on the building expectations that the European Central Bank (ECB) will discuss in depth the tapering of the enormous quantitative easing programme in the October meeting. Further support for the euro came from ECB President Mario Draghi, after he claimed that the strength of EUR exchange rates was not something the central bank was planning to target as part of its monetary policy. The GBP/USD exchange rate was able to hit a one-year high this week after the latest UK inflation data. Price growth shot up to 2.9% - a joint four-year high – while core growth rose to a six-year high of 2.7%. The latest strong data saw bets of a rate hike from the Bank of England (BoE) shoot up. The US dollar continued to struggle with the softening odds of another interest rate hike from the Federal Reserve this year, as well as many resurgences in the tensions between the United States and North Korea. On top of this, the US also had to bear the brunt of Hurricane Irma, which many feared would cause severe damage to the US economy and take a chunk out of GDP this quarter. USD was able to somewhat bounce back this week, however, as Irma struck with less force than was expected. Data has been largely disappointing over the past four weeks – in particularly the labour data for August. What do you need to look out for? The minutes of the latest BoE meeting claimed that monetary policy ‘could need to be tightened by a somewhat greater extent over the forecast period than current market expectations’. If UK data holds steady or improves, expect the pound to shoot higher as market hopes of a rate hike climb. Brace for worsening GBP exchange rates if the economy shows signs of weakening further. Markets are expecting the ECB to make plans to taper its quantitative easing programme at the end of October, so any suggestions this will happen will push the euro higher. Meanwhile, the US dollar will continue to fluctuate based upon tensions surrounding North Korea. LIVE TO LOVE THE ROAD What do you dream about? If you really listen to your inner voice, what does it desire? What would you change and do if you had to do it right now? For most of us, these questions, stress us out completely and we push them away to the end of the to-do-list. For five years, I use the exact questions to be at the top of what I focus on every day with Vilostrada. Trust me, it was tough, really tough to get here. But we did it. My dream was to do good for someone else every day. With our collaboration with the Nomads in Sahara with the Vilostrada Foundation, I do it. Some days small steps, some days, like that day in November 2016, when we finished a project, a solar panel connected to a vital well that fills our water basin with 3 000 liters of fresh water each hour. Water is life and now it is easy, even for my own daughter Maj (10) who can run the pump with her friends Tuda, (5) and Mohamed (11). I believe everything is possible, my inner voice tells me so by nature. How I wish to instill this in all the children around me. To go do, to go follow your desires, to be awesome, be kind to mother earth and to follow your dream(s). Therefore, I said, together with the Nomads and my son Lucas (12): “Let us build the greatest school in the world”. We started with tiny steps in January 12

2016. Together, 8 of us, laid a rock in a circle far out in the desert to symbolize the start. Together, we knew that the best school in the world, starts within all of us: the willingness to share and learn, to get started today, do a little every day. Guess, if we had some results? In November, you come with me to Tanmirt, Sahara as I return to work with my Nomad family and get to introduce new friends to the desert. Follow my Moroccan tracks during 2017. HAIRDRESSERS

It is not all about Hair and Beauty at Rumours in Puente don Manuel, they can also offer chiropody treatments with UK trained Susan Blackwell. Have you taken a good look at your feet recently - they can tell a story or two. Chiropody treatments include an evaluation of the foot, nails, skin and general foot health care of the individual. Within a treatment is nail cut and file/burr, removal of callus and hard skin, corn removal, advice on verruca treatments and looking after your feet, this is important for diabetics. Suffer with thick toe nails, often fungal, ingrowing toe nails, athletes foot and cracked heels? Seeing a chiropodist can help these conditions. Have you ever tried Reflexology ? It is an ancient art of healing by applying pressure to specific areas of the foot (or hand) which correspond to parts of the body, its organs and systems. Reflexology primarily improves the circulation and assists the body in eliminating toxins and waste. By applying pressure and stimulating the reflex points we help clear these channels and pathways, improving their functioning and balance, relieve tension from stressed areas and stimulate under active areas. It can help the lymphatic system work more efficiently resulting in reduced swelling. Similarly it can help the digestive system and conditions such as IBS. A Reflexology session (or regular sessions) contribute towards maintenance and wellbeing of your mind and body and encourages your body to look after and heal itself. Susan is in the salon on Thursdays and Fridays in Puente don Manuel. Call 951 232 881 for Hair, Beauty and Chiropody appointments. See main ad on page 2 this month for Hair and Beauty offers. 16

LAWYERS (ABOGADOS)

Bank Claims It is now eight months since the government introduced legislation to deal with claims against banks for maintaining interest rates above Euribor by including floor clauses in mortgages. The aim of the system was to prevent a high number of consumer claims coming to the courts and leading to substantial delays in the court system. These clauses had been held to be unlawful by the European courts and the Supreme Court in Madrid. Unfortunately, although the aim was to prevent court cases, the fact that there were no administrative or other sanctions against banks has resulted in some taking a hard line and refusing claims. The only resort in these cases is for lawyers to commence legal proceedings in the courts and to request nullity of the floor clause.

but there are occasions when it is the only recourse. Even then you are better to negotiate from a position of strength by making a claim and agreeing a settlement which can be sanctioned by the court. Each case needs to be reviewed individually and at De Cotta Law we treat each claim, taking into account your particular circumstances. We look to ensure that you fully understand the procedure, the costs and the possibilities of success. If you think you may have a claim against your bank and for more information, or to make a claim, please contact us on bankclaims@decottalaw.net or call us on 952 527 014.

Some banks are arguing that the client was fully aware of the clause that allowed this charging of interest at a fixed percentage above Euribor. Equally, a number of banks appear to be waiting to see if a claim is made and then looking to agree a settlement. To date we have received a small number of notifications of offers to settle prior to litigation. In our opinion it is likely that claims which do progress to court will settle at the first, or pre-trial, hearing. The most important thing is to ensure that your claim is made in good time, and that any offer to settle by the bank does adequately compensate you for your loss. We always seek a negotiated settlement to avoid court proceedings if possible, 19

OUT AND ABOUT

out and about in ÁRCHEZ The tiny village of Árchez is the smallest in the Axarquía and second smallest in Malaga province. It is nestled in the mountains near to Cómpeta and Canillas de Albaída and in the foothills of the Sierra de Tejada, Almijara and Alhama natural park. Of a population of just 475, according to the most recent census (Padrón), roughly 23 per cent is foreign. Brits top the list, but the compact pueblo is also home to Scandinavians, Dutch, 34

French and more. Árchez is a wonderful example of Mudéjar architecture and there is no better place to start to take in the town’s Islamic inheritance than the fourteenth century tower, which stands proudly in the centre. It was given special status (Monumento HistóricoArtístico del Patrimonio Nacional) in 1979 and is said to be one of the best remaining examples of its type. The red brick stands out from the surrounding white houses and legend

has it that during its construction, a lizard fell onto the bell, leaving its imprint forever. It is said that if someone looking for love touches or kisses the lizard they will find love within a year. The tower now forms part of the town’s church, Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, which in turn is said to be built on the site of a former mosque – further hints of the importance of Árchez during Muslim rule in Spain. The church itself contains a high number

Both the tower and church are usually locked, however it easy to arrange a visit (particularly if you are looking for love!) by contacting the town hall in advance and asking them to open the buildings up at an agreed time. Other insights into the history of Árchez can be seen at the Molino de

OUT in ÁRCHEZ

The River Turvilla, which flows from Canillas de Albaida, plays a key role in the town of Árchez – not only was it central to the mills (the ruins of a further flour mill can be seen in the town – Molino Martias) but it also means that the town is much greener than most of its neighbours and, according to the town hall, keeps temperatures down, particularly at night in summer, so while the rest of inland Axarquía is struggling to sleep in July

and August, the residents of Árchez are being cooled down by the presence of the river. While it is hardly the Amazon and some may argue that it’s little more than a stream, locals say that it always has water all throughout the year. However, apparently the best days to go are Thursdays and Fridays when there is more water as watering the mangoes and avocados takes place further down in Sayalonga, meaning there’s more water flowing through Árchez. So, depending on whose turn it is to water, the Turvilla has more water or less! Going back to painting, it’s not only the Germans who come to paint this green beauty spot – the Finns are also regulars and thanks to Finnish residents Krisse and Jukka Sulonen, who run a regular painting course from their house in the town. Every year the group display their work as part of the Árchez cultural week and the town hall keeps one piece, while the rest get sent back to Finland for an exhibition there. Árchez cultural week will take place from 28 May to 3 June 2018. The week has a day for children, older 35

and exhibitions. Forming part of the festivities is of course, the local sweet wine, which is produced by the Ribera del Mudéjar bodega, owned by the López Martín brothers, who have owned the bodega for around 25 years. They produce sweet, medium dry and dry wine from local muscatel grapes as well as a red and sell the products from the bodega, which is located at the entrance to the town, as well as in some of the local bars.

Other celebrations that take place throughout the year include a procession for Kings’ Day on 5th January, San Antón in February (Sunday 4th in 2018), Easter Week (Thursday, Friday and Sunday), Feria over the second weekend of July (in 2018 it will be on 6,7 and Photographs of Árchez 8 July), a race, which will by Rob Bell Photography take place on 15th October this year and has various routes for children, older people and those One of the wines the sell, they claim, is the who want to do the full eight kilometres, origin to the expression ‘honeymoon’ or taking in some of the mountains that ‘Luna de Miel,’ in Spanish. OUT AND ABOUT in ÁRCHEZ

Halloween has become an extremely popular festival in Spain in recent years – children and adults alike go to great lengths to make elaborate costumes and city, town and village centres can look like something from a horror movie as the witching hour draws close on 31st October. Most town halls organise events and it is not uncommon to get a knock on your door from the neighbours’ kids saying ‘truc o trato’ (trick or treat) and asking for sweets. The most famous party in the Axarquía takes place in Maro and is known as ‘Maroween.’ Locals and visitors dress up and the diminutive village is decorated with pumpkins, cobwebs and other creepy paraphernalia. Many people believe that Halloween is an American party, popularised in Spain through films, the internet and even Americans who have come here to live and who have brought the tradition with them. English academies embrace it, they often allow their students to come dressed up and organise typical Halloween activities such as apple bobbing and teach Halloween related vocabulary. However, what many don’t know is that Halloween actually originates from an ancient Celtic celebration called Samhain (sow-in), which marked the change from summer and life to winter and death. For the Celts, 31st October meant the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of winter when it is said that the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. They believed that on the night of October 31st the ghosts of the dead returned to earth and damaged crops. They also

believed that the presence of spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. As the Celts were entirely dependent on the natural world, these predictions were an important source of comfort during the long, dark winter. As Christianity spread across the Celtic lands of Ireland, northern France and the UK, people celebrated All Souls on 31st October and All Saints on 1st November. In fact the word Hallowe’en comes from the old Scots words for Saint – Hallow and E’en or Een – Eve – as in Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve. So, Hallowe’en is actually the eve of All Saints’ Day – 1st November. All Saints’ Day – or Día de Todos los Santos – on 1st November, is a more traditionally Spanish and South American festival, although its sombre acts make it difficult to peg the word ‘festival’ to it. Here in Spain it’s a bank holiday and people, admittedly nowadays more the older generation, visit the graves or loved ones and take flowers typically chrysanthemums. There are also traditional delicacies that are eaten on All Saints’ Day: roast chestnuts, huesos de Santo (saints’ bones) and Buñuelos del viento (wind doughnuts). Huesos de Santo are made of marzipan which is rolled into thick tubes. They don’t actually look like saints’ bones – or so I’m told - the name comes from their bone-like colour apparently. They can be found, amid the more modern Hallowe’en inspired muffins and biscuits, in most bakeries in Spain. Buñuelos de Viento are usually filled with cream, chocolate, etc and legend has it that that when you eat a buñuelo, a soul is released from purgatory… Happy Hallowe’en… 37

NURSES NOTES Is it a Bug ?

Was it that `lovely curry´ ? (too good to leave so you heated it up for lunch the following day). Re-heating rice, is not a good plan!

A relative / friend can help or Nurse can be called in to provide equipment, commode and or urine bottle and a lot if reassurance .

Our friend had done the same and felt `a bit off´ but no where near as bad as you.

It’s good to have ... baby wipes and a good barrier cream as a sore bottom can be as bad as any other symptom but get less sympathy!

Day One (Curry +24 hours) Glued to the loo. Projectile vomiting and feces like it’s been shot from a water cannon! Now THAT is a bug. (Apologies for graphic description). In this case take sips of water to keep mouth clean at the peak of the bug and increase fluids to rehydrate (flat coke is good) usually bug has been and gone in 24 hours. (Your friend is now better). Day Two But you still can’t eat, and still worshipping the ceramic God. Feeling weak, the `24 hour bug´ has gone on a bit too long. .. been to farmacia for electrolyte rehdrating drink.

Have available a spare mattress protector clean sheets and towels and paper bed pads and disposable pants (more reasonably priced in Mercadonna). If the patients condition continues to deteriorate be very insistent with the emergency services to get the patient’s bloods checked and abdomen Xrayed at the hospital. It´s more serious now than `Just a bug´.

Day Three Still feeling bad? If you have chronic health problems (eg kidney problem or diabetes) and feeling worse unable to take medication (you really should be seeking medical advice). If you are unable to walk safely enough to get out if the house call the ambulance. It is not always easy and the ambulance crew may just give an `antiemetic´ injection (which will stop you from being sick). Often the injection will break the vomiting cycle. The tablets the emergency doctor prescribes when taken whilst the injection is in the system will often allow the gut to settle. 41

WELLBEING

BEING RESPONSIBLE Being responsible is something which we need to be. The word connotes a certain amount of culpability. It means that there is something we must do although we don´t want to, so we hate the word.

If we look at a dictionary it means: able to be given the blame or credit for being the source of something. Generally it also means worthy of trust, and of course we want to be trust-worthy, so does that mean that we are responsible. Maybe, or maybe not. Last month I was talking about the Real Why, as a factor behind any type of situation that will open a door to handle the situation with a minimum of effort. If we encounter a situation there can be many factors that are contributing to that the situation never resolves. A person who is much overweight may say that he or she will handle it when the summer starts and there is less work, or when her child is 10 years old and requires less attention, or... We can put up many excuses for not handling things that we need to handle. That of course is operating on incorrect Whys, but it also mean that we are avoiding responsibilities. I noticed at one time that one of my children was inventing many excuses when I wanted him to do work at home. The things he invented meant much more work than the work I asked him to do ,so it was not in order to save energy. He could confront and do the excuses but not the work I offered. In other words he felt he could be responsible for those things he wanted to do himself but not for the things I wanted him to do. That a person is trustworthy in principle means that the person is there. It is possible to be there physically but also mentally. When you need the help of a friend it is reassuring to now that they will be there for you physically as well as mentally. It does not have to be a tremendously complicated situation. Maybe you just need to be listened to for a while. 46

The DIRECTORY October 2017

A friend can be there mentally and hear you out, or has something more important to do and cannot be there at all. Responsibility is an interesting word because it also means that one can say, I did it. We normally do not like to admit that we have done something bad. If we break a vase we say, the vase fell, the car broke down, I became ill, I did not have enough time. The idea that we prefer being innocent is so strong that we include it in our description of the world around us. In that way there are a lot of causes that have nothing to do with us. It is fate or bad luck or some malediction that things just happen. My phone fell down and broke the screen. How do we handle those things? Do we have to buy special phones that do not fall down? Politicians have a great knack for falling into this trap, and a lot of things around us deteriorate as well for misguided ideas of what is good economy. If we make some hospitals bigger and close down some others? Have we then increased service and saved money? There are politicians that appears to think so. The result may be that old and crippled diabetics have to sit on a buss two hours each day to get an insulin injection. Who is responsible. The economy of course and nobody notices that there is someone avoiding responsibility. If a rock falls down and destroys your house. Who is responsible, the rock? If a hurricane takes your roof away, who is responsible, the hurricane. If we find our-selves living in a society that is not to our standards, who is responsible. Philosophically these questions put interesting dilemmas. In reality it means that we have an option to elect whether we want to be victimised or not. Victims have no

responsibility. Falsely we may think that if we do nothing then we are automatically innocent. I don´t think so but we are automatically making ourselves victims. As a victim you lose power and depends on other people to help handling your life. The opposite of Victim is Cause. That is when you can be depended upon to improve the situation for yourself and others. That first of all means that you have to be there. How about your health then. If you have an illness or are depressed? Are you expecting that a doctor puts you back on the good road again even if you have maltreated your body for years and years? We are always responsible. if we also take responsibility things can improve a lot. From Snap Shot to Great Shot Not all autofocus systems are created equal. Following on from last month lets look at autofocus points and how to use them. When looking through the viewfinder of your camera you’ll see a series of dots arranged in a pattern. These are your AF or focus points. Today’s modern digital cameras have incredibly precise autofocusing systems. However, they vary in degrees of accuracy from system to system and are definitely not 100% fool proof. Whenever I sort through a batch of images there are always images that don’t make the cut because they have a soft focus. For example if you’re shooting with a low end camera you may have a total of 11 autofocus points with just one cross-type focusing point in the very centre. On the flip side if you’re shooting with a high end camera you’ll have one of the most advanced autofocusing systems in some cases 61 autofocus points and as many as 41 cross-type autofocus points depending on the type of lens you’re using with the camera. Shooting with more autofocus points is not always better. If you are using your autofocusing in automatic mode all of the focus points are selected. Initially that might sound like a good thing but, in a situation where you’re shooting a scene with a large depth you run the risk of objects in front of or behind your subject being in focus while your subject itself is out of focus. It’s only when you start selecting groups of autofocus points or individual autofocus points that you can really leverage the power of these advanced focusing systems. The 48 The DIRECTORY October buttons and/or wheel that you2017 use to select

individual or group autofocus points can vary from camera to camera so you’ll need to consult your manual. I rarely use focusing groups and almost always use a single autofocus point. I generally use a cross-type focusing point. There are what’s known as vertical and crosstype AF points. When focusing on a scene the focusing point is looking for contrast. A vertical sensor can only detect contrast on one dimension. Either horizontal or vertical depending on the orientation of that sensor. A cross-type sensor can detect contrast of both dimensions horizontal and vertical. So as you can see the cross-type sensor has the potential for being far more accurate depending upon the type of scene you’re shooting In Conclusion: This is a basic overview of autofocusing points. We can get far more technical in these explanations. I don’t believe that diving that far down the rabbit hole will make as big a difference in your photography as a mastery of the following basics based upon the information here. I recommend learning about your camera’s autofocusing system. How many sensors does it have? What types of sensors are they? Cross-type or vertical? Where are they positioned and, how do you select them individually and/or by groups? Once you’ve answered these basic questions get out and practice, practice, practice. Learn to select the right autofocus points for your shooting situation. If you do I have no doubt your photography will improve greatly. Rob Bell Photography. Happy Tails

Ossian and Sebastian are two brothers who were owned by an elderly Swedish man that lived in a caravan park for many years. He adopted both boys as young pups but as fate would have it the gent became seriously ill with kidney failure and had to fly home for urgent medical treatment.

Bruce, a lovely Jack Russell/ Bodeguero pup who is about seven months old was found by a couple on holiday in Frigiliana this summer. He hit the jackpot when he was seen on the Costa Animal Society (CAS) Facebook page last month by a Swedish family who reserved him for adoption. We are now waiting for a flight partner to volunteer to take him to his new family in Stockholm. Flash and Alfie are still trying to clear the stringent hurdles put in place by the Norwegian government before they can fly to their new forever homes in Norway. Once they both pass their Rabies Titer tests, flights can be arranged with our Nordic sister charity.

Available for Adoption Punki is a young pup who was found in the Nerja campo a couple of years ago and taken in by a young Spanish couple who already had two dogs. She lived happily in their garden and became part of their family. Unfortunately the couple has recently broken up. The girlfriend has taken one dog to her father’s house and another was rehomed to Holland but poor Punki has no place to go. She is a very affectionate two to three year old female who gets along well with

They are now 2-3 years old and each dog has an independent nature and confident/alpha personality. They prefer each other’s company but can live as a sole dog within a family. If you would like to meet any of these lovely dogs please contact Seacrest Kennels via e-mail at hotelparaperros.nerja@gmail.com or call 95 252 1426 to arrange a viewing.

Our Featured Dog of the Month: Harvey Harvey is another example of a fantastic young dog who was found in the streets of Caleta de Velez but did not have a chip. The couple who found him placed posters in the area and visited the local vets to no avail Harvey has a wonderful, outgoing personality and enjoys the company of people and other dogs. He loves to play fetch with tennis balls and is also quite used to being on his own. Harvey is about one year old, is in good health, fully vaccinated and will be castrated this month.
