Eduardo and Ida married and had three children, Eduardo, Ida and Cecilio. That Eduardo Ocón Rivas, the famous Spanish composer, was from Benamocarra? He was born on 12th January 1833 and was the third of six children for Francisco Ocón López and María de los Dolores Rivas Román. The young Eduardo showed musical talents from an early age and he was accepted into the choir at Malaga Cathedral, a prestigious position as at the time only six boys made up the choir, as was tradition in most cathedrals in Andalusia. He soon started to receive piano and organ lessons with Tadeo Murguía, who was the organist at Malaga at the time. Eduardo is said to have learned to play both instruments incredibly quickly and at just 18-years-old he beat the competition to become the cathedral’s second organist. In 1867 and aged 34, the talented musician left Malaga for Paris with a scholarship, where he worked alongside a number of famous composers. He also taught singing at the Êcole Commune and started to compose. However, homesick for Malaga, he returned in 1870 and met Ida Borchardt, a young German woman living in the city at the time.

Eduardo became conductor of Malaga’s symphony society and later returned to his position of organist at Malaga Cathedral, where he remained until his death on 28th February 1901, from pneumonia, aged 77. His most famous works include Miserere, Recuerdos de Andalucía (Andalusian Rhapsody) and Cantos Españoles (Spanish Songs). A number of streets and places are named after the composer including an auditorium in Malaga city centre and in Benamocarra, there is a monument to him depicting a laurelcrowned lyre behind Santa Ana church.

LIVE TO LOVE THE ROAD We collected things, many things. We bought our home, thinking it would be there forever. Little did we know, each piece we owned would soon own us, mentally and economically. We thought we needed it all to be happy. We spent hours taking care of things, our days became years. My family, me, we got lost in things. Tending to a big house, garden, trying to commute to work in the big city and managing the house combined with taking care of two small children stressed us out. I cried. Is this it? I thought. Is this life?

Amazigh Nomad friends, complete peace and with my husband, I turned to him and smiled. My soul smiled. We did it. Together, we started over and chose a life in service of humanity and helping others. No things own us anymore. We own our road to happiness.

Five years ago, August 23, 2013, we did it. With less than an hour’s of sleep the previous night, we went to the airport in Göteborg at 4:30 am. We sold it all. We left the world we knew behind. We started over. We had eight bags. We had each other. We started Vilostrada during the flight to Malaga. Vilostrada means Live to Love the Road and we promised we would only make choices here on out from our hearts. Can you imagine our feelings?

Where the horizon meets the silence, we follow a path from a time which has passed, on our adventure through the desert. When the sun sets, we gather around the fire, share stories like this one and each other´s company together with the moon and the stars. Welcome to join us and let us share knowledge with you, in exchange for Nomad wisdom. This October 22-29 and November 5-11. We will also plant 200 Acacia trees in the Sahara to stop desertification. Get in touch for more information!

My first night in the Sahara, in December 2015, I remembered that crazy, wonderful day. As I gazed up to the starlit sky, with only a small pack of belongings, new

Your donation of €12 will help us plant one tree. With the Vilostrada Foundation, we now sum up two months of adventures, stories, lessons and our mutual labour in a book we call “Ki Krak: To Give, to Receive” planned to be published in December 2018.

GUIDE TO RUGS IN YOUR SPANISH HOME Looking to inject a touch of extra character to your Spanish home? Apart from adding interest, rugs work well to define areas in open-plan spaces and, when summer eases off, they cosy things up when laid across cold stone or tiled floors. In the living room, position your sofa and armchairs with the front legs on the rug for a comfortable feel. Like all accent pieces, the size and type of rug you choose depends on your furniture as well as how much floor space you have – big, strong patterns might overwhelm a small, crowded room yet look smart and sophisticated in a larger or more minimalistic space. In the bedroom, a small or oversized rug running about half a metre around the bed makes getting up a little bit easier on chilly winter mornings.

If your hallways look a little empty, try adding a runner to warm things up. Choose hard-wearing options that withstand plenty of visitors, especially downstairs, and make sure you add non-slip underlay which also stops carpets from kinking up. With outdoor living perfectly possible at just about any time of year, rugs bring a homely indoor feeling to your patio or balcony – choose a weather-proof one or even Astro Turf so that you don’t have to rush out and roll it up if you get a rain shower. Traditional, rustic Spanish homes are often adorned with thick blankets or thin rugs hanging across doorways. Apart from being decorative, they block out drafts during the cooler winter months while keeping the burning sunshine out during summer. Which rugs to choose? Local rugs Echoing your surroundings with locally sourced items for your home is interesting and makes a lot of sense too. Rugs are made not so far from Axarquía so why not take a trip to the beautiful mountain villages of the Alpujarras and pick up a typical Jarapa, a coarsely woven ‘rag rug’, from the area you live so near to? Make your way to the three fantastic whitewash villages of Pampaneira, Bubion and Capileira and you’ll find rainbows of these hardy, coloured rugs to choose from. Pampaneira still has three traditional 18

working looms and Capileira has one. Moroccan rugs Morocco isn’t so far away either and Andalusian homes lend themselves so well to Moroccan styles. You could venture there yourself via hydrofoil from Algeciras or Tarifa and haggle for one in the kasbah or pick one up in one of our many local Moroccan stores. Unsurprisingly, beautiful Berber carpets are some of the most popular types of Moroccan rugs with their geometric designs and strong colours. They tend to have a thicker pile than other Moroccan rugs, giving them a luxurious, soft feel that works well in both contemporary and traditional homes. An added benefit is that they are stain-resistant making them resilient in the busiest areas of the house. Originally created to bring warmth to rooms, traditional Berber rugs are hand knotted using wool fibres from a specific breed of sheep while more modern Moroccan rugs use nylon and olefin fibres instead of wool.

Chindi and Kilim rugs are thinner Moroccan options. Made of cotton, wool or jute, they tend to be even more colourful than Berber rugs, with the added advantage of being light enough to hang on Spanish whitewashed walls to warm up the look of your room. Chindi rugs have an array of colours without any distinctive pattern, while Kilims are made by flat weaving to create geometric and freehand patterns. It’s not unusual to see beads and baubles woven through them to give texture and interest – be bold as they are perfect for just about any furniture style and decor. Beni Ourain rugs are so sophisticated, neutral and elegant that they attract admiration through their sheer subtlety! Made from natural materials and dyes, these thick-pile sheep’s wool rugs originate in the Atlas Mountains and are generally made of two colours only. Being handmade, they come complete with those characterful Moroccan imperfections we know and love. . Words: Tina Andlaw compellingcopy.co.uk 19

De Cotta Law - Buying Property off Plan in Spain With construction commencing again and prices rising in most areas of Spain, many people are buying property off plan. This can be a very good way to purchase, with payment in instalments until the construction is completed. Buying in this way in Spain is safe and secure provided your lawyer ensures that a guarantee or insurance policy is in place. A revised law governing Insurance and Solvency of guarantees of 20/2015 has come into effect to bring more certainty with an insurance/guarantee system to protect buyers of off-plan property. The original law dates back more than 50 years in the Ley 57/1968 and needed modifying to bring it into line with modern insurance and banking guarantees. There are important changes to the previous law which purchasers relied on when a development was not completed. Before entering into any off-plan purchase, your lawyer will need to check the building licence. All the payments once the licence is in place must be protected either by a bank guarantee or an insurance policy. The guarantee or policy must cover all payments plus taxes and legal ✓ Family Law – Child Abduction interest from the date of payments ✓ Evictions and Civil Proceedings to the date set for completion. ✓ Andalucia Inheritance Tax reductions A lawyer acting for you and independent of the developer can ✓ Purchase and Sale of Property advise you on the completion dates, effective return of monies if the ✓ Rentals and Holiday rentals developer fails to complete, and all other issues relating to your ownership of Spanish property. Axarquia Solicitors WHAT TO DO IF THE REAL BUILT/PLOT SIZE DOES NOT CORRESPOND WITH THE DOCUMENTED AREAS ON THE DEED, IN THE LAND REGISTRY OR IN THE CADASTRE There are often discrepancies between the real meters of a property or plot and those which are registered in the Land Registry or Cadastre Office. This can be due to extensions being added to a property, or in the case of land, to the segregation of a plot from a larger plot, without reporting these changes to the correct authorities, (i.e. the Land Registry and the Cadastre office). These discrepancies can cause problems when applying for a mortgage as Banks will not finance a property that is not correctly registered. In order to rectify the situation a new deed must be made declaring the new construction or segregation and specifying the actual size. This would require a Certificate detailing the actual meters to be issued by a qualified Architect which should then be duly registered in the Land Registry. In reality the measurements in the Land Registry and the Cadastre Office rarely match, because the measurements in the Registry are from measurements taken by an Architect and the surface areas in the Cadastre Office are taken from aerial photographs. If you have any problems regarding the discrepancies between real measurements and those documented in either the Land Registry or the Cadastre Office you would need expert legal advice on the best way to rectify the situation. In most cases it can only be done by submitting documentation relating to the property, such as the Deed of Sale, the Deed of New Construction, plans, drawings, photographs, certificates etc. to the Cadastre Office so that their technical staff can proceed to update the specifications and modify the documented areas. There are also many cases where the property or plot is not registered under the name of the actual owner in the Land Registry or the Cadastre Office. In these cases it is not simply a matter of rectifying the measurements, but a matter of registering the property or plot for the first time. If this necessary, in addition to submitting documentation to prove the physical reality of the plot or property you would also need to provide at least the last 4 years of IBI (LOCAL PROPERTY TAXES) receipts. To avoid all of these problems, we always recommend that before buying a plot or a property you should check the Land Registry and Cadastre office to ensure that the details are correctly documented. This process would require the assistance of a qualified expert who can make all of the necessary enquiries to confirm that everything is in order. Our company Marbellasolicitors Group has over 15 years experience, helping hundreds of clients to purchase properties and plots both on the coast and inland, so please don’t hesitate to contact us for our advice on this or any other legal issue. OUT AND ABOUT

Photograph by Rob Bell Photography

BENaMoCARRA At just about five kilometres north-west of Vélez-Málaga, Benamocarra is one of the easiest villages to get to in the Axarquía. There are no windy, mountainous roads and street parking once there is relatively easy. The first thing you notice in Benamocarra is how friendly everyone is. They all greet you with a smile and a ‘hola’ or ‘buenos días’ as if you’ve known them for years! When I went back for a third time in less than two months, an English lady I know there introduced me to a young Spanish woman, who in turn said “yes, we have already met”!! Had we? Does going to Benamocarra three times make me a local? At first glance, Benamocarra is a sleepy village, complete with a few small bars and the obligatory retired men sitting at them at any time of day, sharing a beer and a chat with friends. There are a fair few stray, but seemingly well-fed cats and dogs and some fantastic views over the surrounding countryside. Head to the small mirador behind Bar Tania, just after Plaza Calvario, for some of them. 34

The DIRECTORY September 2018

The village’s name comes from the Arabic Banu-Mukarran meaning ‘children of Mukarran’ and was given the name by a Berber tribe who settled in the area during the Islamic period. A local legend When a cholera epidemic hit the Axarquía at the beginning of the 19th Century, Benamocarra was seriously affected and residents didn’t know what to do to combat the disease. Legend has it that they decided to bring a figure of Jesus Christ from Torre del Mar to the village, which was thought to have inexplicably bur miraculously cured many people of illness. When the figure arrived in Benamocarra, residents processed through the streets with the image and the epidemic is said to have gone. Ever since then the image of Cristo de la Salud (Christ of the health) has been revered with great devotion and each year, over the penultimate weekend in October, the village’s feria is held in his honour. To get more of the history, a series of 12 tiled placards are dotted around Benamocarra, explaining (in Spanish) the Islamic and post Reconquista eras. Santa Ana, the parochial church, like many on the Axarquía, has a Mudejar tower and dates back to 1505. The streets are narrow and some steep, or stepped, and the houses are whitewashed. There are a couple of disused wells, including the ‘Fuente de los Caños’ which also give an insight to the village’s past. Fuente de los Caños would have been used to wash clothes in and around 10 years ago the town hall undertook to restore it back to its former glory. Unfortunately it seems to have been abandoned since the original work was done. There is also, arguably slightly randomly, a climbing wall next to the well. But that also looks like it’s under lock and key. Photograph by Rob Bell Photography

BENAMOCARRA

Music and Sun Benamocarra’s motto is “Music, Sun and Much More” and that is because its biggest festival is ‘Día de la Musica´ or ‘music day’, which takes place in September. In fact the roundabout at the entrance to the village is decorated with brightly coloured musical notes, so right from the start you get a sense of how important music there. The reason for this is that Spanish composer, Eduardo Ocón, whose most famous works are, ‘Miserere’ and ‘Recuerdos de Andalucía’, was born in the village and as such the day is held in his honour. Different genres of music are represented,

including traditional Malaga folk music; Verdiales and ‘tunas de estudiantes’, which can be best described as medieval music performed by people in costume. There’s also jazz, modern music and flamenco. There’s also a market with stalls selling traditional crafts and food and a painting competition. EL Día de la Musica is now in its 18th year and has been recognised by the Junta de Andalucía as being of special touristic importance. It always takes place on the second Saturday in September and this year it will be on the 8th. Other

Benamocarra are San Isidro in May and the annual Feria takes place over the penultimate weekend in October. Benamocarra has lots of services, including a primary and secondary school. There’s also an indoor and outdoor sports centre and municipal swimming pool. The best way to get there is by car by heading north along the A356 from Vélez-Málaga and following the signs to the right for Benamocarra and Trapiche. The road winds round and goes over the A356 and passes alongside a series of fields with mangoes, avocados and other local produce until hitting the musical roundabout, signalling the start of the town. EVERYONE NEEDS A BIT OF POSITIVITY Selfcare is not selfish We live in a society that is quick to judge our actions as selfish, to make us feel bad and guilty about putting ourselves first but the reality is that no one else can take care of us better than we can take care of ourselves. Noone else, no matter how close we are to them, knows how we truly feel inside, how our body feels, how we are coping with the stress of the world and what we need to make us feel better. Only we truly know what we need and sometimes even determining that for ourself can be difficult, we need to take a moment of quiet, to stop and listen to ourselves. We get so caught up the in the ‘rat race’, Our jobs, our families, our commitments and responsibilities seem to consume us and few of us really listen to ourselves. Even when we do there is often an excuse at hand..we are too busy at work, our kids need our attention, we have too many things on our ‘To Do’ list or my personal favourite… we just can’t say NO!! The reality is that we can all make some time for some self care, it is not a whimsical ideal - it is an absolute NECESSITY!!! I think this saying really sums up the trap we often find ourselves in…. STRESS IS WHEN YOUR MOUTH SAYS YES BUT YOUR HEART SAYS NO! Self love and care is not just an occasional bubble bath or a new pair of shoes, real Self Care is making a commitment to yourself and putting your needs first. This is not selfish! In Fact it is the most unselfish thing you can do! The better you feel the more able you are to GIVE to everything and everyone else!! If you don’t listen to yourself and just keep going until you are exhausted you 46

may experience all kinds of negative emotions, anger, resentment even depression, and more commonly illness, as your body will just create a situation to make you stop and listen! When you board an aircraft and listen to the Safety Demonstration they ALWAYS tell you that you must put on your oxygen mask BEFORE helping anyone else, why do you think this is?? Because if you dont you will pass out and not be able to help ANYONE. This is the same lesson, you can not give from any empty tank! So if you need it I am now giving you full permission to look after yourself, to take some timeout and to put yourself first! Be kind, be compassionate, be empathic but make you do all of this for YOURSELF as well as other people! See the list for some really helpful suggestions, Try starting with one from each list and build up to more! I can now tick all of those for the mind, nearly all for the body (i need to go to bed a bit earlier) and most of them for spirit (im not so into colouring!) and I can really see and feel a difference! Pick one and start today‌ by next month it will be a habit.. And you will be blossoming and growing in no time!

From Snap Shot to Great Shot My photography students often ask me how to photograph the moon. If you own a DSLR or a point and shoot with an optical zoom, I’m sure that you see a beautiful moon and you think about taking a picture of it, especially when the moon is full and beautiful. There are other times when you spot a news announcement about a Lunar Eclipse and you think about capturing the moment, but do not know how to do it right. The picture is not coming out right because the moon is much smaller and looks like a white blob. If you had any of these situations or simply want to find out how to take a picture of the moon with a digital camera, then this guide is for you. To photograph just the moon by itself, without any objects in the foreground, you will need a long telephoto lens, try to fill as much of the frame as possible. Even with a good telephoto lens setup though, you will most likely be cropping the final image. With your telephoto lens mounted in your camera, secure it on a tripod and point at the moon. When it comes to shutter speed, aperture and ISO, here is what I recommend for general use: 1. Camera Mode: Set your camera mode to full Manual Mode. 2. ISO: Set your ISO to 100 if you have a Canon DSLR and to 200 if you have a Nikon DSLR (basically, whatever base ISO you have in your camera). For most other brands, the base ISO is also 100. If you have a point and shoot camera, see if you can find a menu setting to set your ISO to 100. Make sure “Auto ISO” is turned Off. 3. Aperture: Set your aperture to f/11. 4. Shutter Speed: Set your shutter speed to 1/125 on cameras with base ISO 100, and to 1/250 on Nikon DSLRs with base ISO 200. 5. Lens Focus: Set your lens to manual focus (either through a switch on the lens or on the camera) and set your focus to infinity. On more advanced DSLRs such as Nikon D5500, there is a handy feature called “live-view with contrast detect”, which can accurately acquire focus on distant objects. If you do not have such a feature in your camera, then try setting your lens to the canter of the infinity sign, then take a picture and see if it came out sharp by zooming in the rear LCD of the camera. 50

RECIPE

Coconut Vegetable Curry by Richard Fox With the full force of summer finally abating, what we’re hopefully left with is a deep, golden tan – safely obtained of course over time with lots of protection. Throw in the ability to start enjoying some quality beach life without getting frazzled and too sweaty to see, and we’ve got the makings of a seriously feelgood recipe for life. That in turn means we can finally start to give some thought to getting in shape as basic functioning movement becomes less arduous. Eating as much fruit and veg as we can is not just energy boosting, but eaten in place of meat and dairy, will help the pounds drop off without even setting foot in a gym. And here’s the best news of all: it can taste awesome! It’s also a great reason to start visiting those wonderful little Spanish fruit and veg shops which are Aladdin’s caves of super-fresh and seasonal, let alone incredible value. So, welcome to my go-to weekly curry treat. Enjoy!

Serves 4-6 2 tbsp coconut oil 2 onions, finely chopped 6 cloves garlic, crushed 1 large thumb of ginger, finely grated 3 small chills, finely chopped 2 tsp coriander seeds 2 tsp cumin seeds 2 tsp yellow mustard seeds 2 tsp black mustard seeds 400ml water 150g coconut cream 1 tsp veg stock Salt and pepper for seasoning 1 cauliflower, separated into florets Bulbous end of butternut squash, peeled, chopped and seeds cleaned and reserved

1/2 tbspTurmeric 1 tbsp Garam masala 4 tbsp Coconut oil Handful of chopped coriander Cooked basmati rice to accompany Heat the 2 tbsp coconut oil in a large heavy based saucepan. Add the onions and cook for a few minutes over a medium heat until softened. Add the garlic, ginger and chilli and cook for a further couple of minutes. In the meantime, in a separate pan, dry fry the whole spices for a minute or so - until the mustard seeds start to pop. Grind the spices with a pestle and mortar or in a spice grinder. Add the ground spices to the onion, garlic, ginger and chilli mix and cook over a low heat for a couple of minutes, stirring constantly. Add 100ml of the water and stir to form a thick paste. Add the coconut cream, stir to evenly incorporate and then add the remaining 300 ml of water. Stir until smooth, season and add the veg stock and cook gently over a low heat. Meanwhile, pre-heat the oven to 230°C. Combine the turmeric, Garam masala and coconut oil to form a smooth paste. Add to the cauliflower and squash pieces making sure they’re evenly coated. www.richardfox.tv foodbyfoxy

two VIKINGS FROM NORWAY

TWO vikings from norway “Via Ferrata” My heart was pounding, banging, trying to get out of my chest. I felt as though my blood was on fire. My limbs were moving on their own. I was disconnected from everything but the ever present sound of the beating of my heart. I shook my head. “Concentrate, concentrate man!”, I said to myself. All I had was the rock, the wind and a long way down. I looked up. Above to the left it was a one meter overhangig rock. How could I have thought this would ever be fun? I had to go fast. I checked the gear, fastened my safety line as far up as I could reach. And then. Boom, boom, boom, boom! Four fast steps, and I was through. I had done it.

It was a glimpse of heaven for a few seconds. I loved it. I screamed. I screamed out loud. My hands started to shake and my legs felt weak. What a feeling. The post-rush drop in blood sugar had set in. The adventure had started a few hours earlier. It was a friday in the Axarquia. Friday was fun day. Normally all days in the Axarquia are fun days. My son and I loved being here. The weather forecast said sun, a bit of wind and around 25 degrees. Perfect conditions for some “via ferrata” adventures. We had done this several times before. There are several routes in the Malaga area. Our favorite place to climb is up in Comares. The beautiful city known as “ Balcon de Axarquia”. After a thirty minutes drive up from Torre del Mar we walked under the village arch and headed to the north side. Here there were some great routes waiting for us. “Come on dad! “. My son was eager to do some climbing. Few minutes later we had put the climbing gear on, and were ready. My son started. He knew the route and was smiling. He enjoyed this. Being a man and a boy at the same time. In no time he was ten meters up. Here appeared the first challenge. A zip line. Not a very long one. But hanging on the back, flying ten meters above ground was always fun.

Best restaurant view in the world

Twenty minutes later we stopped in a

cave for our picnic lunch. At around 700 meters above sea level there was the most spectacular view. “The best restaurant view in the world”, I said. With our bodies fulled, the vikings were unstoppable. We continued our adventure. The second route was ahead of us. We looked up. It started with ten meters slightly outwards. It was just as well that we are fit as here we needed some strength or at least some good technique. Again my boy started. No problems for him. I clipped my security line on the cable and started. I leaned my body close to the rock and climbed slowly up. “How are you, dad?”, my son shouted down to me with a big smile. I smiled back loving having father-son quality time and adventures together. The ferrata continued with some airy bridges and in places some challenging parts. We both felt the adrenaline buzz. After an hour with fun and excitement we finished the ferrata. “Awesome dad , absolutely awesome“ said my son. We had just spent yet another wonderful day together in the sunny Axarquia. Some Information: Via ferrata is a cross between hiking and climbing. Via Ferrata routes are built into rock faces with cables and ladders to optimize the security. The origins of the via ferrata date back to the First World War, when several routes were built in Italy to aid the movement of troops. Via ferrata is a safe way for ordinary people to experience rock climbing. Although no real climbing ability is needed you should not have vertigo.

You need to use special equipment designed for via ferrata. Always be secured to the security cable. Remember not all insurance policies cover via ferrata, if an accident occurs. Use www.wikiloc.com information about routes.
