An A-Z of Businesses in your area and more!

Dear Readers and Supporters Wow that was a hot one, is September going to be cooler? This month in our Out and About article we went across to the Costa Tropical to feature the beautiful La Herradura. What a treat it has been going over there to learn about the area, meeting some of the businesses and just generally enjoying the feel of the place. It is a perhaps a well kept secret ... until now, and absolutely worth a visit. There are some lovely cafes and chiringuitos to enjoy a lunch or dinner and the marina, albiet hidden away and a challenge to find is a must to see. Should you call in on any of the businesses mentioned in the article please let them know you found them in The Directory. Whilst it seems impossible in this heat to think about Christmas we are only 3 advertising months away from the festive season. If you have a business that is celebrating Christmas then get in contact and we can help you with your advertising. Have a great month and enjoy looking through this issue and as always a massive thank you for all your support. x Out and About articles written by Jennie Rhodes Front cover photograph by Rob Bell Photography. Whether it be the people, the scenery, the activities or the flora and fauna it’s hard to imagine any other country on the planet with such diversity. Almost exactly 5 times the size of the UK, South Africa is a destination that warrants several visits, but if you only have one chance then the top of most peoples lists are Cape Town combined with one of the worldclass safari areas. Each Province of South Africa has its own unique attractions and reasons to visit. Cape Town’s home province, the Western Cape, has much to offer including the Garden Route, whale-watching in and around Hermanus and the fine wines, fine dining and beautiful scenery of the Winelands. Further along the Indian Ocean coast is the Eastern Cape where you can take in malaria-free game viewing and spend some time discovering the rugged coastline and endless beaches of the Wild Coast. KwaZulu Natal has a huge range of temptations, from walking in the Drakensberg Mountains or relaxing on its beautiful beaches to the history of the Battlefields, where some of the bloodiest battles of the late 19th Century were fought, to the fantastic game opportunities. Being blind with perfect eyesight PIES Y BIENESTAR We all know how to do it. Turning a blind eye, or a deaf ear to something we don’t want see or hear about. We probably learned it in school on subjects that we didn´t understand or too boring to follow. In our times it is taking on improbable proportions and may the fastest growing illness of all times. Only seconds or minutes pass before we know all the bad things that are happening in the world, one of the latest being that the arctic zone is saying goodbye due to global warming. I don’t know anyone who can cope well with the day to day information overload. We do need to communicate and find out about things but in a digestable format and speed. Moreover we need to keep abreast with the things we can do something about. The simplest solution is to turn the blind eye to anything which does not affect us directly. It is not a good solution. Every time we do it we loose a bit of quality of life. In reality we are saying, someone else has to do something about it. In the end that quick fix applies to ourselves as well. So I have put on a few kilos. But I don’t look to bad do I? We look in the mirror and don’t like what we see. I know. I’ll start spending time in the gym. The situations creep up on us and either we don’t know enough or don’t care enough to prevent things from happening. Solution, we turn a blind eye. Or we catch an addiction like drinking, eating too much sugar or spending hour daily on Facebook. Unfortunately we use the same solution with more serious health issues like cardiovascular problems, cancer, diabetes, Alzheimers and a long list of potentialities. 44

The DIRECTORY September 2016

The truth is that most people that need loosing a bit of volume, don’t have the time or energy to go to the gym to work it off. Even if they go there the probability is almost zilch that it is the correct solution to the problem. Going to a gym is not and has never been a prerequisite for good health. Being healthy though is a prerequisite for having a better life. Other conditions, like having money, may overshadow everything else but does it help someone dying from cancer if he has money? Better palliative care possibly? Cancer and most serious or autoinmune illnesses can be prevented with a healthy lifestyle, at least in the majority of cases. A serious error in our society is that we turn a blind eye to anything that appears not to need attention, and then desperately we try to handle it with whatever means when things break. This applies to your health, but also to your car and your TV set. If the TV collects dust in its filters for a couple of years it will overheat and break. Then you want it fixed immediately. When your body breaks, you may opt for a pill to quieten it down instead of handling the cause behind the problem. Lots of money being spent on illness and very little on prevention. Blind eyes all over. The bottom line of all this is that in the end nothing is going to be fixed, not wages, education, health care, roads, corruption, or whatever we would like fixed. To get anything done we need at least to look after our own

health and the health of those we care for. Everybody has a value and can contribute something to the well being of everyone else. Doing so improves health, self esteem and hopes for the future all around. Soon we will be launching the health care project SALUDAMOS Life - Coach, (saludamos is Spanish for making things healthy). Marketing Your Business on Instagram Instagram is one of the most popular marketing platforms and businesses are eager to establish a presence on the social networking site. Here are my tips for Instagram marketing: High-Quality Photos: It’s essential to take the best possible photographs to make your Instagram feed look good. Cross-Promotion: Instagram’s biggest trend right now is sharing the love by tagging others or promoting other companies, products and services. There’s higher recognition and increased followers for everyone. Trending Hashtags: Use Instagram’s Explore feature to find posts on trending hashtags, then you can use the ones relevant to your brand in your posts to gain more reach. Mix Videos and Photos: A video can generate three times more traffic than written posts, it’s a valuable tool that

can be used to engage followers and drive traffic. Sponsored Ads: Sponsored ads on Instagram are becoming a regular occurrence on people’s timelines. Before, only people following the account would see photo updates, whereas now brands can promote these to anyone within their target audience, giving them a whole new audience to target. Make Posts Shareworthy: Pairing images with captions is an effective way to engage your audience. Complete the image with a detailed caption and relevant hashtags - the entire combination results in a shareworthy post. Instagram can be one of the most timeconsuming social media platforms to manage, because most of it can only be done from your mobile device - but the return is well worth it. Call Eleanor Makin at Quantum23 to find out more about websites. See ad under Websites. 47

Currency News Rip-off exchange rates hit the airports once again ! UK airport exchange bureaus, some of them brand names we would even recognise here in Spain, recently offered GBP to Euro at a rate of 0.99p. Whilst sterling has remained under pressure of late, it has continued to trade at around the 1.15 to 1.17 margin. Another example of why you need to think carefully when deciding how to convert your money. On a wider scale, sterling began to recover some of its recent losses with inflationary figures coming in better than expected and a rise in retail sales confirms Brits are spending more and pumping as a consequence, more money back into the economy. On the other side of the world, Japan is facing another financial crises as its Government introduced a 200 Billion quantative easing package. Experts however predict that once this money has been used, Japan´s underlying problems will remain. Japanese exports have nosedived and the Yen, perceived as a safehaven currency has been under increasing pressure.

SPANISH CUISINE

Manchego

This is a type of cheese and is generally made from the milk of sheep. One of Spain’s best known cheeses, made from ewe’s milk. It originated in La Mancha Hence the name, but is now made all over the country. It’s sold fresh or slightly aged in olive oil, and has a deep yellow rind and creamy white interior. It’s firm to the touch with a buttery nutty taste that’s slightly sour. It’s a good grating cheese that melts well. It is served as a tapa in most bars and used in many recipes. Manchego is similar type of cheese to engish cheddar but is normally quite mature.

Back to the UK and a recent report indicates with many Brits remaining at home for their annual holidays, the UK tourism industry is looking at a 1.4 billion boost this year (funny that, I thought there were more Brit tourists here this year than ever before ???) OUT AND ABOUT

La Herradura

54

This month we’re stepping (four kilometres to be precise) out of the Axarquía and into… …La Herradura, so called because of its perfect horseshoe-shaped bay; herradura meaning horseshoe in Spanish. Although there is evidence of the town existing as far back as the bronze-age and later a Moorish settlement including a small castle near the mouth of the river, as well as the origins of the lighthouse on the Punta de la Mona, which in the 18th century became a lookout tower, it is the story of the shipwreck from the Spanish Armada which really puts La Herradura in the history books. In 1562 the Spanish Armada sheltered at La Herradura from a storm, on its way to Oran, a then Spanish-held city in northern Algeria. When it was thought that the storm had passed the ships attempted to set sail again. However, the wind had changed

The DIRECTORY September 2016

direction and tragically 25 of the 28 ships in the fleet collided with each other, hit rocks and sunk around Punta de la Mona and Playa Berenguales. It is believed that up to five thousand sailors lost their lives. A further 2000 are said to have been able to swim to shore and survive due to the fact that they were mainly slaves and therefore wearing lighter clothing and fitter than the other wealthier

passengers. The tragedy is even referred to in Miguel de Cervantes’ famous novel, Don Quijote, in which he mentions the death of the daughter of Don Alonso de Maraíon, a Knight of Santiago. If you look carefully outside the San Jose church in the town, the immortal words of Cervantes are inscribed and in 1990 a monument in memory to the disaster was placed on the seafront. La Herradura belongs to the town of Almuñécar, in the province of Granada and as Malaga province is known as the Costa del Sol, the Granada coastline calls itself the Costa Tropical. Around two kilometres of beach stretch from Cerro Gordo in the west along to Punta de la Mona in the east. A short drive around Punto de la Mona will bring you to the picturesque Marina de Este where moored yachts bob around in the water, while cafés, bars and restaurants offer classy cocktails, fine dining and coffee with stunning views!

Photography by Rob Bell Photography

La Herradura’s Paseo Marítimo, or promenade, is named after one of Spain’s most famous classical guitarists; the late Andrés Segovia (born 1893, Linares). In recognition of his contributions to music and the arts, Segovia was given the title of Marqués de Salobreña by King Juan Carlos 1 in 1981, six years before his death in Madrid in 1987. He spent much of his retirement in his summer house in La Herradura and his legacy is still very much alive today in the town, in the form of the annual Andrés Segovia International Classical Guitar Competition, which next year, in its 32nd year, will mark the 30th anniversary of its founder’s death. The event will take place from 17th until 21st of January 2017. La Herradura is particularly popular with divers and diving excursions, courses and other water sports including paddlesurf and kayaking can be booked through the numerous water sports centres in Marina de Este and on the Paseo Marítimo. As well as water sports, La Herradura offers stunning views from its lighthouse at Punta de la Mona, which separates the town from Marina de Este as well as 55

the Cerro Gordo viewpoint to the west, shared with neighbouring Maro in Malaga province. Cerro Gordo was declared a nature reserve by the Junta de Andalucía in 1989 thanks to the diversity of its maritime ecosystem, which includes the endangered ‘orange coral.’ The place really comes to life in the summer months when tourists looking for adventure sports mingle with those wanting to simply relax and enjoy this enchanting coastal town. Bars, cafés and restaurants spill out onto the paseo offering a truly idyllic atmosphere. La Herradura has a population over just over 4,000. Although still predominantly Spanish, many foreigners have 56

moved to the town, drawn not only by its beauty but also its artistic feel. Dutch national Jeroen Stultiens, who runs CostaMundo (see his advert on page 9) moved there with his family having visited on holiday previously and the extremely talented guitarist and singer, Tijs Groen, also from Holland, has been living in the town since 2014. He has become somewhat of a local celebrity as he performs regularly in many of the chiringuitos (beach bars) in the area and beyond. Another well-known foreigner in La Herradura is British Luthier, Stephen Hill, who runs his internationally renowned workshop and guitar-making courses in the town. On a practical note the tourist office is located in

Yogi ADVENTURE I’ve been banging on about kayaking for ages and each time I’ve booked, it’s been cancelled due to winds – even when I went all the way to Cabo de Gata for a kayaking adventure during San Juan. I didn’t tell my compadres about my kayaking ‘hex’ at the time though Anyway, my friend Karen was over from the UK. And we managed to rope in my intrepid adventurer friend, Melanie, who was undeterred by our marathon walk of the River Chillar. So we booked a two-hour Nerja to Maro kayaking adventure with Educare Aventura on Burriana Beach. I was teaching a private yoga client – Katja on the beach beforehand, and it was her last session before flying back to Germany. We asked if she wanted to join us –por supuesto! So after a sustaining brunch of coffee, churros and chocolate, all four of us headed down to the kayaking place. The office was packed with noisy people in beach gear, so it was hard to tell whether we’d missed our time spot. But all was good, and some people from our booking didn’t turn up. So after waiting on the beach to see whether anyone else would join our gang, we headed off – just the four of us, and our guide David. “Have we picked the worst time?” I thought.. Apparently not. Paddling along the coastline’s crystalline waters, we saw testosterone-fuelled teens tumbling from cliffs (for fun, I hasten to add..). We visited

c a v e s , fresh-water waterfalls, sweeping beaches, and an imposing ‘fertility stone’. David pointed these out, explaining their significance to the area while taking shots of us with a Go-Pro. Apparently, the waters around this coastline are so clear because of plants that act as water filters. These plants can also be found in Cabo de Gata. And after snorkelling in an incredible lagoon in Playa Playazo there, I must agree that the water has a similar clarity, with amazing visibility. So we ‘parked’ (floated?) our kayaks near Maro beach and snorkelled around reefs teeming with fish, sea anemones, crabs, the works. Then, we made our way back to Burriana Beach, paddling past the coastal superhighway of stand up paddle boarders and kayaking groups. The kayaking was easy enough; but we had worked up a hunger by the time we got back. So we topped off the adventure with paella and tinto veranos. The perfect way to appreciate the local sealife - from seabed to plate. Hasta pronto! Sal Samadhi Mañana sally@samadhi-manana.com www.samadhi-manana.com
