Remember Tim who was brought into RSPCA care just before Christmas? He needed expensive, specialist surgery to his back leg to repair his tendons. Following the story in The District Post leading to generous donations of around £1,000 and vet Peter Haggis, Tim went in for his Achilles tendon operation on January 2. The RSPCA are now looking for a foster carer to look after Tim for around two to four months whilst his leg heals. They are looking for someone who lives in or around the Sussex North area and is able to take Tim for regular trips to Wilbury Vets in Hove. Tim needs to rest his leg for
around eight weeks so is only able to have a five minute lead walk three to four times a day to allow him to toilet. He is not allowed to climb stairs or get onto furniture as it could damage his leg. Tim loves human company, although he does find being on his own a little difficult at first and is going to need to have someone around most of the day both for toilet breaks and to prevent boredom. He is good with other dogs, as he has not been neutered yet any females would need to be neutered, however Tim cannot play so it may be best if other dogs weren’t playful, maybe an elderly dog would suit. Tim has been fine with children, although again, he can’t be allowed to get excited so older children may be best. Fosterers will be provided with a dog bed, veterinary costs are covered by the branch, who will provide the dog food and a boredom busting kong toy will be given as well. Any other costs are usually met by the fosterer. If you are interested in fostering Tim, please contact RSPCA volunteer, Jo, at jo@rspca-sussexnorth. org.uk or call 07776 485824. Potential fosterers will have a home visit to ensure a suitable match for Tim. If you are not able to foster Tim, you could help towards the cost of the operation to remove the pin. Another £450 is needed and you can donate online or contact Jo for details of other ways to donate to Tim.

Witnesses sought to possible assault in Pulborough Police are investigating a possible attack on a woman in a Pulborough alleyway on New Year’s morning. Shortly after 2am on Thursday, January 1, police were called to a house in Pulborough at which a 37year old local woman had just called there in a distressed condition. The house is near the alleyway and the woman does not live there. The woman is receiving expert medical support and counselling while detectives work to establish what has happened. Detective Sergeant Jason Turner said: “We are currently investigat-
ing this as a sexual assault, in the alleyway between Pocket Park and New Place Road in Pulborough, while the woman was walking home. However our enquiries are at an early stage and the full circumstances are not yet clear. “If anyone was in the area at any time between midnight and 2am this morning, Thursday, and saw anything suspicious, please contact us via 101@sussex.pnn.police. uk or by calling 101, quoting serial 251 of 1/1. You can also call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.” No arrests have been made.
Seized necklaces could be stolen Do you recognise these necklaces? They were seized by police on December 29, after officers searched the car of a suspected burglar from Henfield. Detectives do not currently know who the items belong to but believe they may have been stolen in a burglary. Sussex Police launched Operation Magpie to tackle burglary across the county. Detective Constable Oliver Summers said: “We need to identify who the necklaces belong to so we can return them to their rightful owners. “If the necklaces have been stolen, this could also help us prove who took them and to bring the offenders to justice.
“If you have any ideas who they belong to, please contact us.” A 28-year-old man has been questioned on suspicion of burglary before being released on bail until February 7. Anyone with information should email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk quoting serial 1044 of 22/11, call 101 or contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Second runway at Gatwick on agenda at two council meetings Councillors will scrutinise and debate at two important meetings this month West Sussex County Council’s official response to a public consultation into options for additional airport capacity in the south east that include an option for a second runway at Gatwick. The final decision will be for the new government after the general election. The Airports Commission has been seeking views from the public and businesses about the options to increase airport capacity by building a second runway at Gatwick or expanding Heathrow. In November it published a detailed report outlining each proposal which included analysis of the cost of each option, the effect on communities of noise, property loss and construction, and the economic benefits and environmental impacts. WSCC’s Environmental and Community Services Select Committee members will scrutinise the council’s draft response when it meets on January 14. The meeting starts at 10.30am and will be webcast live at www.westsussex.public-i.tv/core/ portal/home. A special full council meeting has also been organised for Monday, January 19, so that all members of West Sussex County Council can consider and debate the authority’s response – including any rec-
ommendations made by the select committee - before the Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport takes the final decision on the response. The Environmental and Community Services Select Committee agenda, which includes a copy of the council’s draft 94-page response, is now available online at www.westsussex.gov.uk. The Full Council agenda will be published on Thursday, January 8 and is available from the same link. Pieter Montyn, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: “Since the consultation launched in November we have been encouraging people to take part in it and make their views known. “We know there is significant opposition to expanding Gatwick but we also know that the economic benefits for the county would be huge. “It’s important that all members of the council are given the opportunity to discuss and debate how we plan for either scenario (a new Gatwick runway or not) before we make an official response.” Louise Goldsmith, Leader of West Sussex County Council, added: “The decision whether or not to have a second runway at Gatwick is not one that will be made by West Sussex County Council. It’s entirely out of our hands but I firmly believe that we have to start planning now for whatever decision is made.
Artist impression of the second runway
“If there is to be a second runway at Gatwick Airport then we need to consider how best to mitigate the effects on local communities and the environment whilst considering how best to make sure the infrastructure and services that are needed for more jobs, new business opportunities, homes, as well as the increase in traffic and transport, are provided.
Hero pilot lands 447 passengers safely at Gatwick Benjamin Coren News Reporter
T
he pilot of Virgin Atlantic flight VS43 which was forced to make an emergency landing at Gatwick Airport on Monday, December 29, has been hailed as a hero after saving the lives of 447 passengers and 15 crew. Senior Pilot David Williams who lives near Horsham, West Sussex landed a Boeing 747 jumbo jet after its landing gear failed. The flight was bound for McCarran International Airport, Las Vegas. Passenger Mike Kaufman said about half an hour into the flight, passengers were informed the jet would have to go back to Gatwick. Mr Kaufman said: “They said it was a hydraulic problem. When we were told we would have to go into the brace position for landing a sigh went around the plane.” The aircraft circled between Gatwick and the south coast to burn off fuel, according to eyewitnesses, one of the five landing gears on the jet had failed to deploy. Virgin Atlantic told The District Post: “As you know our captain has been trying to stay out of the media. Since being named however, he has offered words to share.” David Williams, Captain at Virgin Atlantic commented: “All of our pilots at Virgin Atlantic are trained to the highest standards
and we go through regular testing to deal with any scenario that may arise. Clearly this was an out of the ordinary landing but I was just doing my job and any one of our pilots would have taken the same actions. I’m really proud of my colleagues on the ground and in the air and the support they gave me during this event – everyone worked really hard in a difficult situation and we are delighted that our customers were able to travel to Las Vegas the next day for their New Year’s Eve celebrations. Thank you for your interest and I hope you can respect my request for privacy as I am keen to spend some private time with my family over the New Year.” Describing the mood on the plane as it was circling, passenger Dan Crane, 24, from Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, said it was “anxious, a lot were worried, some crying. The mood was quiet and (we were) just waiting for the captain’s next announcement.” East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service were on standby at the airport and eyewitnesses on the ground reported the jet was flying at a relatively low altitude and the pilot appeared to be trying to shake the landing gear down. Passenger Holly Jackson said the crew tried to “deliberately bounce” the plane to get the faulty landing gear back into position. She said: “They said this was a precautionary procedure, or some-
thing like that. But it didn’t work and we were told we would have to get into the brace position for a landing and it was then that everybody did start to get scared.” She said thoughts went through her mind that, in situations like this, either “everybody is safe or no one is”. But she added: “The captain did amazingly. You would not have even known there was something wrong with the plane from that landing.” The jumbo landed at the airport just before 4pm. Mr Kaufman, speaking from his seat on the plane back at Gatwick, said: “This was one of the greatest emergency landings in history. It was very smooth.” Interviewed for Sky News, he went on: “We didn’t realise there would be such a fuss. It was such a calm, experience. About half an hour out they said we would have to go back to Gatwick. They said it was a hydraulic problem. “People got used to the idea that we were going to have to land back at Gatwick. The crew were very calm and that made the passengers calm. “People in the row with me were saying ‘We want this over and done with’. We thought we’d be fine but you’re never sure. “Everybody gave the crew a big round of applause when we landed.” The flight was rescheduled for the following day.
“If the Government opts for expansion at Heathrow Airport this would also be considerable news for the county. We would have to consider how we optimise the benefits of Gatwick Airport in its current configuration. There will still be growth but it will be very different and the impact and supporting infrastructure will need to be planned differently but no less carefully.”

Horsham children’s nurse wins annual staff achievement award

Golfers at Mannings Heath Golf Club in West Sussex have raised enough funds to help Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance save four lives. Each call-out of the charity helicopter costs about £2,500 so the fantastic sum of £10,250 raised will fund four potentially life-saving missions. Members of the club, near Horsham, handed over their cheque to the pilot, doctor and paramedic at the helicopter base on December 4. The air ambulance was chosen by Club Captain Stephen Wild, Ladies Captain Sandra Roberts and Seniors Captain Roy Keirstead as their
Charity of the Year. Stephen said: “We’re all really delighted with the huge amount we raised and the generosity shown by members of the club. “It didn’t seem like a lot of effort because we enjoyed doing all the fundraising. We had tremendous fun doing it, and the money raised is a fantastic by-product of a successful year.” The funds were raised from a number of events including a Captain’s Day, quiz and supper nights, and raffles. Air Ambulance Community Fundraising Officer Michelle Woodland
said: “As a charity we rely almost entirely on public donations so we are extremely grateful for this substantial donation.”

GARDENING: Are we still a nation of gardeners? guy deakins Gardening
Might I still be able offer you all a happy new year – I am never quite sure when one stops offering best wishes? I was quite inspired by the efforts of last year to commemorate the lives of those who died in World War One serving their country. Thus I was reading a good history book over Christmas, which opened my eyes to the finer details of West Sussex dialect and local life in general from pre-history to the modern era.
According to one report, Horsham was ‘little more than a village’ in 1830 - so not much has really changed in the last 185 years then. Apart from the odd new house here and there of course. With the huge amount of houses now due to be built in Horsham over the next 15 years – effectively 1,000 for every year, doubling the population - now is possibly the time to think about what makes your garden different from the next. If I am being honest, I have over the last few years noticed a serious decline of variety in the gardens, not just in Horsham but across the country – most being a boring splodge of lawn with some shrubs around the outside. This I am told, is so that the kids have somewhere
to play and keeps maintenance at a ‘minimum’. Many if not all of the new builds will have the ‘same old same old’ approach, leaving this green and pleasant land just that little bit more bland. Despite the fact grass is undoubtedly complicated to get right; has our proud national heritage been reduced thus? Are we no longer a nation of gardeners? Might I suggest, we reclaim our gardens from our children – who afterall have playgrounds, school grounds, sports clubs, swimming pools, the county maintained parks and forests and of course the green and pleasant countryside that sur-
rounds us to enjoy? Perhaps I am being patronizing when I say we could do so much more with our personal spaces. We, the parents, need a haven too and I am not talking of your Chinese made television or Korean computer. I am talking about your very expensive piece of land that you do very little with. In fact I am not alone in thinking this. I have over the past few years been invited to consult - as an experienced designer - on a few gardens locally that wanted to improve the adult space and reduce the child space, to aid relaxation and add calm to our too hectic
lives. After-all it has been scientifically proved microbes in the soil help reduce stress. If I may tell you an anecdote? A proud Englishman in Norfolk once told me he always dreamed of owning a large garden, but discovered he didn’t know what to do with it, so gave up. It was therefore reduced to a splodge of grass with some overgrown shrubs. That’s not an Englishman talking about his castle is it? We all love our kids, but maybe it’s time to be a little bit selfish and indulge our inner peace for the new year? Besides, with garden clubs and societies struggling to find new members, isn’t it time you picked up the baton your forefathers fought so hard for? It’s your patriotic duty.
Signs, they are a-changin’ nik butler @loudmouthman
With apologies to Bob Dylan. “Come gather ‘round people wherever you roam, and admit that the Carfax around you has grown; accept it that soon you’ll be confused by the signs. If your time to you is worth savin’ then you better start watching or you’ll be lost in Swan walk. For the Signs they are a-changin”. Leave it to an artist to frame the opening mood for our District in 2015 or maybe I am showing my age and the desire for permanence against upheaval is growing stronger. In my mind there has always been a certain theme style, or a design cliche if you will, which defines most of Horsham street furniture. It attempts to reflect the more rural aspects of our market town whilst it embellishes the edges with the green and gold filigree which appears to suit the ambiance of the town. These signature colours and styles appear to repeat through railings, and lamp posts, and sign posts, and this stamp of design consistency feels as much a part of the character of Horsham as horses or the countryside. However it appears that these
signs are quite literally changing, and they will soon be replaced with more modern monoliths whose colour some might suggest is closer the subliminal communication of a more ‘tory’ blue. It is unclear why there is a need to update signage but it highlights the continued ‘Half Done’ Horsham approach which currently blights the presentation of projects within our town. In place of a coherent sweeping update that ‘rebrands’ and establishes a new message to communicate how Horsham is staying current we have various dropped in adjustments which may bookend Swan Walk but they still leave a loose end in the Carfax. Whilst we recently benefited from the removal of the bamboo ashtrays of West Street I begin to wonder if the style guide for Horsham needs to be revisited before we end up with too many half done ideas smashed together. Certainly the replacement bushes are a closer match to the theme of green and gold which reflect our Horsham hues. However the current juxtaposition of straight lines in the East Street Quadrant followed by the waving yellow brick road of West Street and the current green and gold market square ambiance of the Carfax are an indication that we apparently have no central brand from which to base our future.

County Council joins forces with alcohol charity for new Dry January game
Rotary raises over £4.5k this Christmas
West Sussex County Council has joined forces with Alcohol Concern to inspire Dry January participants with a new online game featuring Marty the Martian. The interactive game involves participants helping Marty save up alcohol units throughout January to fuel his ship and make it home. It was the idea of the County Council’s Public Health team and developed by Alcohol Concern. The County Council helped to fund the game’s development. The game launched on Thursday, January 1 and is available throughout the month. Councillor Christine Field, cabinet member for community wellbeing, said: “We are delighted to have collaborated with Alcohol Concern on this new game. The game is a fun way for people to experience the benefits of going alcohol-free for Dry January. “Why not sign up for Dry January
with friends, family or colleagues so you’re in it together? The benefits of cutting back on alcohol include losing weight and a better night’s sleep, plus you will also save money.” Game participants unlock a number of awards and challenges along the way. The game also includes an interactive quiz, an online mocktail bar with alcohol-free recipes as well as calorie and units-saved counters. Emily Robinson, director of campaigns at Alcohol Concern, said: “The Dry January game is a great addition to the 2015 campaign. This added tool will not only be really fun for participants, but it will give them an extra set of information and support throughout their alcohol free month.” The game will be accessible via www.dryjanuary.net with participants being able to share their rewards and trophies through Facebook. People can sign up for Dry January at www.dryjanuary.org.uk.
Need to lose weight? Want to change more than your waistline this year? The Rotary Club Horsham The Rotary Club of Horsham thanks everybody who contributed to its various 2014 Christmas Collections at Sainsburys, Tesco, around the Streets and in the Town Centre which together raised over £4500. It would have been more but unfortunately some nasty gremlins got into our float which prevented us from completing our street collections as planned, we
apologise profusely to all disappointed children who were waiting to see Santa visit their home. We have used the majority of the funds raised to provide Grocery Vouchers to less fortunate local families to enable them to have a little bit better Christmas than otherwise, and the remainder will be spent in the coming months on helping similarly deserving families and individuals as part of our ‘making a difference to Horsham’ scheme which has donated over £50,000 in the last 39 months.
To apply to the scheme visit our website (horshamrotary.org.uk) and click on ‘Making a Difference Application’. Come to our FREE TALK on January 19th 7-8pm at Horsham Bowling Club RH12 5EZ, just text FREE to 07874 021 074 to book your seat Want to lose weight the healthy way? What if you could finally do it this year and start moving forward with your life!? Just imagine a life in which you aren’t obsessed with food or negative feelings about the way you look. Horsham-based coaching specialist The Mind and Body School have been delivering a highly successful weight loss programme which is doing just that. Clients are finding that it’s a lot more than just their waistlines that change and the feedback speaks for itself: “I have taken back control of my life. Choosing what I eat, when and how. I feel positive and ready to move forward” Jane “I feel motivated and enthusiastic…it’s been wonderful…I feel inspired to go ahead with my goals and get on with a full and positive life” Siobhan “Simple and clear workshops run by Nicola and Anna resulting in immediate mind set shift… changing into healthy eating not dieting. What a relief, thank you!” Debs Co-Founder & Coach Nicola, said: “We deliver the very best attention and care to each of our clients. We base our success on not only the evidence based approach that we take but on the fact that we get to know our clients so well. For us success is determined by seeing the incredible progress that our clients make. It can be daunting admitting that you’d like help with your weight and the group workshops have been incredibly supportive of each other. Our clients have been bowled over by the amount of support that’s been given to them. There’s no brusque weighin or one size fits all talk and we keep the group size small. Our clients tend to have tried every diet going and are
so relieved when we tell them there we don’t use scales! We’ve since launched an Energiser Club for clients that have attended our workshops. This is successfully keeping everyone on track. We’re all the same; Anna and I are highly motivated and work to look after ourselves by eating healthily and exercising but, of course we can struggle too. By sharing these struggles and how to overcome them (using positive psychology and behaviour change evidence-based approaches) we can truly say that we’re walking the talk”. We all need to re-assess the type of foods we’re eating, the size of our meals, the number and type of snacks and how much exercise we are doing. This is about getting rid of the diets, going back to the basics and realising your dream of looking and feeling better. Our focus is on what’s going on in your head and getting in the way of your success with this. It’s this that is at the heart of our success. For the first time our clients have stopped obsessing with food. They now focus on what they want to achieve in life and how they’re going to do it. The shift in focus has been fantastic. Who wants to spend their life counting calories, we can’t imagine anything worse! The next set of 4 workshops starts on Monday 26th January, 7-9pm at Horsham Bowling Club and runs for 4 consecutive Mondays. If after your first session you decide the approach isn’t for you your money will be refunded in full without hesitation. Visit www.mindandbodyschool to book your place now. 2014 at Horsham Museum & Art Gallery Recycle your Christmas horsham museum www.horshammuseum.org
It was the personal recollections that made the exhibitions and events held across the district and at Horsham Museum to mark the Centenary of World War One so different. From the large crowds at War Memorials both on the August 4 and November 11, to thousands of people visiting their village and town exhibitions, displays and events, people found a common cause. A joint effort by the Museum volunteers and Friends of Horsham Museum saw the purchase of one of the most significant portraits in the town’s history. In 1868 the town of Horsham gave to Vesey Fitzgerald, its recently defeated MP, a large painting. Now the decedents in downsizing sold the painting at auction. The size meant it could only go in one place in the timber framed museum, but its presence will be celebrated in the forthcoming exhibition Order (dis)Order, marking the 750 anniversary of the first Parliament. The painting was purchased with funds raised through the sale at Toovey’s and Denhams of unwanted geology that museum volunteers, members of Horsham Geological Field Club, had spent
over two years sorting through. The Museum also saw two major exhibitions that resulted in significant sales for the artists. Jonathan Chisel Jones Lustre exhibition attracted purchasers from Salisbury and further afield whilst Clair Philips pre-London exhibition of large paintings of Indian children who were working in near slave conditions saw a painting sell to a Cornwall based collector. Other artists who have seen successful exhibitions include Alison Milner Gulland’s mixed media display, the colourful Horsham Quilters and Horsham Embroiders. The Museum though is not all about exhibitions, with the team of 55 volunteers the Museum researches, documents, stores and displays a wide range of objects. Significant achievements include the Friends of Horsham museum HLF poster project that saw the Museum’s outstanding collection of posters become available on line and more importantly used in a number of ways; exhibitions, publications cards etc. The work was complimented by the teams of volunteers who do over 5,000 hours of work from gardening to decorating, photography to scanning to ensure the museum offers a venue that over 73,000 people visited last year. 2015 sees other anniversaries to commemorate and celebrate, though none as directly poignant as World War One. In March the Muse-
um will mark the Battle of Waterloo and Napoleon’s 100 days and in July the 150 anniversary of the publication of Alice in Wonderland. Both events have strong Horsham connections which will be explained in the exhibitions, whilst January will see the Parliamentary exhibition open. Around these three exhibitions will be art shows and craftwork on display as well as interesting photography. The programme would not be possible without the support of Toovey’s Fine art Auctioneers and Valuer’s who have kindly agreed to support the Museum building on their generous support over the last few years. Without it many of the museum activities would not happen. 2014 saw Horsham celebrate the 400 anniversary of Horsham’s dragon first being mentioned. It also saw the discovery of what happened to the dragon, or rather snake, announced in the exhibition- it died within two weeks of it being sighted. Whilst we cannot be sure of any other such discoveries we can be sure that the Horsham Museum & Art Galleries exhibitions, displays and events in 2015 will entertain and may even have a few surprises. Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum & Art Gallery is open Monday to Saturday, admission free. For more information please contact Jeremy Knight, heritage manager.
cards at Sainsbury’s
A
local supermarket is encouraging residents to recycle their old Christmas cards and wrapping paper at Sainsbury’s Horsham, and make a positive impact to the environment. Customers have until Tuesday, January 13 to bring in any of their old Christmas cards and wrapping paper to the collection box situated at the front of the store. The recycling drive is part of the retailer’s partnership with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) UK. The collected cards will be recycled by Sainsbury’s and it will make a donation to FSC UK in the New Year based on the volume of cards collected in its stores. Last year it donated over £9,000 to help the FSC with its work to promote responsible management of the world’s forests. Collection boxes are available in now in over 880 supermarkets and convenience stores throughout the country. Sainsbury’s Horsham store manager, Derek Boarer, said: “We had a really good response from our customers last year and with their help, we’re hoping to make an even bigger contribution this time. It’s a great way to continue that goodwill feeling and ensure your cards are
Horsham Store Colleagues show how to recycle put to positive use, which is all part of our No Waste to Landfill commitment”. Rosie Teasdale, deputy director FSC UK, said: “Sainsbury’s Horsham’s donation provides essential support for our education and awareness-raising work, helping us to support people in the UK protect the world’s forests. Recycling paper results in less waste going to landfill, it reduces the pressure on forests, and it’s helping to give future generations the gift of healthy forests.” Additionally, all ‘paper’ wrapping paper can also be placed in the Christmas card recycling collection boxes to support this activity. Sainsbury’s sells over five million rolls of wrapping paper each year – that is enough to stretch from London to Auckland.

Bluecoat Sports Top 3 Tips for that New Year’s Resolution Expect setbacks
1
No matter how hard we try there will always be periods of time when our training doesn’t go to plan. Our diaries get interrupted, the cat needed an urgent trip to the vet, you got roped into taking the mother-in-law on a shopping trip, or you just quite simply are working to damn hard to find a
Set SMART goals
2
Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely. Vague goals are difficult to achieve, for example “run more” or “lose weight”. How will you know when you have got there? How will you track your progress? Make your goals more specific and you
spare 90 minutes in your day. Our advice to you is this – do not give up! It can be easy to get discouraged and to completely write off your exercise for the day – but this when you need to stay motivated! Every bit of progress you make towards your goal really does count, no matter how small. So even when you can’t find the time to make it to the gym and achieve all you wanted to, at least achieve something
will find it easier to get on the road to better fitness, and stay there. Once you have achieved your goal, you can then re-asses where you want to be and set a new one. “I will bench press an extra pound every week from January 1st until I can bench press my own body-weight” and “Starting on Monday I will run a total of 60 minutes per week for the next 3 months” are examples of SMART goals.
Share resolutions
3
Don’t keep your New Year’s resolution to yourself. Sharing your goals with your family and friends can be a powerful motivational tool to push you through to goal accomplishment. Having those closest to you in on your plans can mean daily, invaluable support and assistance. You may even find that they’re willing to modify their own lives, at least temporarily, to help out. What’s more, just the fact that you’ve confided in them is a powerful motivator for helping you remain consistent and persistent. You can also share your actual workouts by getting a workout buddy or even hiring a personal trainer.

Local author scoops two prestigious awards For renowned Horsham based author Dee Blick, Father Christmas delivered some unexpected gifts in the shape of two highly prestigious awards for her fourth book: The Ultimate Guide to Writing and Marketing a Bestselling Book - on a Shoestring Budget. “I found out just before Christmas that my book was heading up The BookBag’s top 10 non-fiction books of the year,” said Dee. “The BookBag is the most popular independent book review site in the UK so I was pretty chuffed to say the least with this. Then a few days later I was told that my book had made it in The Guardian’s top 10 reads for entrepreneurs in 2014 no less. For any author, it’s pretty nerve wracking when you release a new book because you don’t know how it’s going to be received so these accolades coming so soon after its launch in October of last year have given me a fantastic boost.” Dee’s latest book has the catchy strap line: “If there’s a book in you, this is the book for you” and is available on Amazon for under £10. You can contact Dee at dee@themarketinggym.org if you would like to receive the first chapter of her award winning book and you can chat to her on Twitter @deeblick.
A service to remember for one Horsham motorist
Nathan Booker from Horsham in Sussex has had a Christmas to remember thanks to the GROUPAUTO AutoCare network, a UK-wide network of independent garages. Mr Booker drove into Horsham Motor Services for a regular service and drove out with a brand new Citroën DS3, courtesy of AutoCare. Mr Booker was the lucky winner of the latest AutoCare Winter Give-
away. Customers who visited their local AutoCare garage for a service, MOT, repair or even just a winter safety check were given the chance to be entered into the competition to win a variety of great prizes, including the DS3. “It was brilliant to hand Nathan the keys of his new steed at Horsham Motor Services with the team who had carried out the service on his old car,” said AutoCare network
manager, Maria McCullough. “For safety and security it’s obviously vital that motorists have their vehicles serviced, but no one really enjoys it, so to be able to provide such a great prize was an absolute pleasure.” For more information contact the GROUPAUTO team on 01274 654600, email hugh.wilson@groupauto.co.uk/hughwilson70@gmail. com or visit: www.groupauto.co.uk.

A Horsham mum and her children have become the winners of a Christmas festive clothing hamper. Molly Coddle Childrenswear launched a competition on social media to inspire customers and followers to enter by saying what they would like to see Molly Coddle Chil-
drenswear doing in 2015. There were no right or wrong answers, just the unique power of their imagination. Molly Coddle’s owner and designer, Tracey Edwards chose Horsham mum Louisa Dalby as the winner for her creatively written entry , she said: “Rainbows and lots of them! Such magical moments when you see one and maybe Molly Coddle will find the pot of gold! As my kids say, ‘love you more than rainbows!” This has inspired Tracey to source and introduce a rainbow theme in the Spring/Summer 2015 range and she was so touched by ‘love you more than rainbows’! Tracey said: “I find customer feedback essential in the evolution of Molly Coddle Childrenswear and this competition produced so many great ideas, it was difficult to select a winner”. The hamper contained dresses and pyjamas and was beautifully wrapped and full of Christmas spirit. To view the childrenswear visit the online shop www.MollyCoddleChildrenswear.co.uk or come along to see Tracey near to the entrance of Swan Walk at the Carfax every Thursday from 9am-4pm. A
children’s entertainer from West Sussex has helped to raise £1,356 for local children’s hospice Chestnut Tree House. Tomfoolery was asked as part of his Charity Tuesday initiative to host a Christmas party with a twist. Darren Woods, a local children’s horse riding instructor from West Sussex, orchestrated the evening of party games such as musical chairs, pass the beans on toast and the tunnel of doom game, for grown up kids. The night was rounded off with the debut performance of the Steps tribute group ‘Steps into beans on Toast’ starring Tomfoolery, Darren Woods, Emmafoolery,
Lyn Snowdon and Jo Greenhaigh. Chestnut Tree House is the only children’s hospice in East and West Sussex and cares for 300 children and young adults from 0-19 years of age with progressive life-limiting conditions from Sussex and South East Hampshire. For the last few months Tomfoolery has been raising money through all parties booked on a Tuesday as part of his Charity Tuesday initiative where £120 of every party booked goes directly to the hospice. For information on booking a Charity Tuesday part, visit www. partytom.com.To keep up to date with all the latest foolery, go to www.facebook.com/tomfooleryuk.

Crawley Millennium Concert Band requires a new musical director. Is that person you? The band is looking for someone who has had some experience of directing a music ensemble, but who also has the enthusiasm and vision to take the band into the future. Without a new Musical Director, the band will not be able to continue making music for people in the Sussex and Surrey areas. The band was set up as part of Crawley town’s Millennium celebrations and held its inaugural concert at the Hawth Theatre, Crawley on January 15 2000. ‘Strike up the Band’ was the title of one of the first concerts of Crawley Millennium Concert Band. Since then, the band has
become a well-respected concert band, performing all over the South East in concert halls, bandstands and in the middle of fields. It has a membership of about 30 musicians, drawn from all sections of the local community. The band plays a wide range of music from its extensive music library, including show music, film music, marches, novelty pieces, selections, suites, overtures, rock and pop, jazz, and classics. If you are interested in finding out how to be considered for this appointment, please contact cmcband@hotmail.com. If you want to find out more information about the band, including becoming a member, please visit the band’s website www.cmcband.co.uk. The closing date for applications is Monday, January 26.

Ruby Turner come to Horsham this January RUBY TURNER Friday 23 January 2015 7.30 pm For many years Ruby Turner has been regarded as having one of the greatest voices the UK has ever produced. Ruby can breathe life and meaning into any song, whether it be a passionate ballad or a soulful up-tempo groove. Her career to date has always had many unexpected twists and turns with major tours, theatre and TV appearances, Born in Jamaica, Ruby moved to England when she was nine and her major break came when she was taken under the wings of British blues legend, the Late Alexis Korner. Her first album, “Women Hold Up Half the Sky” was released to critical acclaim in 1986. This period spawned the hits “If You’re Ready (Come Go With Me)” and “I’d Rather Go Blind” and in the American R ‘n’ B chart, ,the number 1 hit single “It’s Gonna Be Alright” – one of less than ten British records to achieve this. A prolific songwriter, many of Ruby’s songs have been covered by artists such as Lulu, Yazz and Maxi Priest while her vocal prowess has been employed to good effect by Brian Ferry, Mick Jagger, Steve Winwood and Jools Holland. The show takes place on Friday, January 23, at 7.30pm at The Capitol, Horsham. Tickets cost £20 and are available from the Box Office on 01403 750220 or at www.thecapitolhorsham.com.

YM stun Horsham’s Twickenham the league dream ends for another year leaders Saturday January 3 - Senior Vase Round 3 Fullerians 19 – 10 Horsham

orsham’s dream of playing at Twickenham is over after they lost 19-10 at Watford based Fullerians in the Third Round of the Senior Vase. Both sides top their respective leagues with neither team having lost for three months so something had to give. Fullerians started the game playing with greater composure and winger Tom Williams outflanked the visitors defence and scored in the corner after 4 minutes. The try was converted by Craig Duncan from near the touchline and Fullerians had a 7-0 lead. The Green and Whites started to create a few phases of play and on 12 minutes, when Fullerians were caught offside in the backs, Johnson slotted the penalty to reduce the deficit to 7-3. A key moment in the match came on 26 minutes when Jacobs put in a clever chip over the top of the Horsham defence, and whilst Whiting was waiting for the ball to roll over the try line Williams was first to pounce and ground the ball, and with the try converted the home side took a 14-3 lead. Horsham now had dominance in the scrums and at the following scrum the Green and Whites won
Horsham’s cup run ended at Fullerians the ball against the head and drove the Fullerians pack backwards, and when Michael Tredgett picked up and charged from the back of the scrum he was stopped just short and Johnson was first to pick up the loose ball and stretch for the line. He converted his own try to reduce the deficit to 14-10. Horsham started the second half brightly with good breaks from Matt Stone and Talbot. Both Stone and Nick Bell made key tackles as Fullerians started to exert pressure of their own, and after missing a penalty kick at goal it required Fairs to show his pace to cover a kick through when the home

side looked to have outflanked Horsham’s defence. Finally after the Green and Whites had absorbed a period of pressure and defended a succession of pick and drives, prop Matt Bushell crossed the line, over which there was doubt as to whether the ball had been grounded, to seal the win for Fullerians, and there was no way back for Horsham. Horsham coach Nick Stocker was disappointed to be on the receiving end of a first loss since October. “I thought we played the better rugby and looked the more threatening side but we couldn’t make the most of our opportunities. We didn’t

show enough composure and didn’t execute the openings we made well enough. But you can’t give a side like Fullerians an 11 point head start. To be fair they defended better than we did, capitalised from our errors and then brought on their big boys in the second half to shore up their scrum.” Horsham return to league action on January 10 when they are at home to Bromley based Park House. Horsham: W Bell, Gibbs (Fisher 64), Tuhakaraina, Ordidge, Whiting; Johnson, Rush (Mills 60); Talbot, Stone (Fisher), Barber; Green, Goward (R Tredgett 46); N Bell, Thompson, M Tredgett.
The U12 Horsham Hawks returned to winning ways to start the New Year with a comfortable victory away at the Eastbourne Lions. Horsham got off to a quick start taking a 10-2 lead inside just 4 minutes before both teams began trading baskets to close out the first quarter with the Hawks taking an 18-10 advantage. In the second period Horsham’s intense defensive pressure began to force errors from the hosts leading to turnovers and well executed baskets extending the Horsham lead at halftime to 40-19. After the break the Hawks continued to move the ball quickly and unselfishly with each member of the team effectively contributing as Horsham further extended the lead to 60-29 going into the final
quarter. A late Lions rally saw the lead begin to close at the end of the game but was not enough to stop the Hawks moving up to third in the table. Head Coach David Clayton said “It was particularly encouraging to see our new players taking good shots using good technique with such confidence and without hesitation. Balanced scoring makes this team difficult to defend and gives us more options offensively as well as building trust and confidence within the team.” Next up is a home fixture against league leading Hayward’s Heath Eagles. Scorers: Josh Lea-Clayton – 14, Amy Willcox – 13, Josh Tavolieri – 12, Antonio Lozzi – 11, Finley Bennett – 10, Charlotte Willcox – 4, Jamie Coulson – 2, Isla Head – 2, Meghan Stevens – 2.
Horsham YMCA will be looking towards the second half of the season with justifiable hopes of securing a promotion place after beating the league leaders 4-2 at Gorings Mead. YM fell behind to an eleventh minute goal from the Division 1 top goalscorer Tom Tolfrey but went in at half time with a 2-1 lead due to goals from Anthony Hibbert and team captain Ashley Dugdale. The prolific Tolfrey equalised for Dorking on 58 minutes but YM secured the three points when Hibbert grabbed his second on 67 minutes and Dave Brown made it safe scoring YM’s fourth goal in the last few minutes. YM manager Buckland said after the important win: “At last, a performance to be proud of. It beggars belief where we are in the league table really. Other than last Saturday, which was an all time low I think, I’ve known it’s been coming. It was a good, controlled performance today. It was a proper YM performance. We kept our shape all over the pitch.”
Heath hit five to shoot Crawley down Saturday December 27 - Sussex County League Division One Crawley Down Gatwick 0 - 5 Broadbridge Heath Football Dave Smith – Sports Editor Broadbridge Heath recorded their biggest ever Division 1 victory with this comprehensive result against struggling Crawley Down Gatwick. In a fairly even first half Heath went in at the break a goal to the good thanks to Kieran Grieg’s tap in following a defensive error from the home side. In the second half Heath ran riot, Tiago Andrade scoring twice to make it 3-0 before Andy Howard made it four from a corner. The rout was completed by substitute Greg Clark who hit a well taken fifth in the last minutes.

Another thrashing for ill-disciplined Hornets
Charman resigns as Hornets boss football
Dave Smith – Sports Editor
G
ary Charman’s reign as manager of his home town club came to an end last Friday when he handed in his resignation to the Hornets Board of Directors. The team sit rock bottom of the Ryman League Division 1 South table and given their current form look favourites to drop out of the division. Charman took over the role on November 20 2013 following the resignation of Simon Colbran due to his work commitments. Despite keeping the Hornets in the division last season he has struggled to get any sort of consistency from his team this season, suffering a number of heavy defeats. Assistant manager Mark Hawthorne and Coach Ian Varley have also left the club. A statement on the clubs web site from HFC Chairman Kevin Borrett said, “Gary has been an integral part of this club from his earliest footballing days. Gary took over the club at a very difficult time and has had limited budget and resources to work with, though he still successfully consolidated our position at the end of last season after taking charge. Unfortunately things have not worked out as well this season and whilst I have no doubt that Gary will be an effective and successful manager in the future, combining those responsibilities with still playing is a difficult balancing act. Gary remains an outstanding player and true gentleman, and I would not rule out his returning to a managerial role in the club at a future date. We are
incredibly grateful for everything Gary has done, and he will always be respected and welcome at Horsham FC”. Anthony Storey, who Charman recently brought back to the club as a player, has agreed to take over as caretaker manager until a permanent successor can be found and is likely to be in place for a ‘few’ matches. Whoever takes over the manager role has a massive task on their hands and will need to negotiate some cut price deals very quickly to get a number of players in of a standard and mental attitude that will turn the tide and lift the club to safety. However The District Post understands that Storey has been working extremely hard behind the scenes and that the club hopes to bring in a number of players this week. Prior to Charman’s resignation the club announced that they had taken the decision to cancel the registration of one of Charman’s most recent signings, defender Ryan Woodford who arrived back at the club at the same time as Storey, following his awful disciplinary record that has seen him sent off in his last three matches. This along with the decision of talented midfielder Byron Napper to leave the club to play in Australia and of course the loss of Charman as a player has left the club seriously short of any quality players. This season has seen the defence leak goals through numerous errors and lack of concentration while the lacklustre forward line lacks any serious firepower. No one can doubt Gary Charman’s passion and commitment to the Hornets cause, perhaps his appointment as manager was a little early. Without question if the Hornets squad contained twelve players with similar drive, enthusiasm and ability as Gary’s then the club’s battle would be at the top of the table. Unfortu-
A rare Horsham attack
Thursday January 1 - Ryman League Division One South Horsham 0 – 5 Worthing Football Dave Smith – Sports Editor Gary Charman’s reign as Horsham boss ends nately that was not the case and a number of players have let him and the club down badly. CEO John Lines told The District Post “We need players who are prepared to fight for the cause and take pride in the shirt and I am working with Anthony Storey to bring in some players he has recommended. We have had a number of enquiries about the position of manager but we won’t be rushed into a decision. The attitude changes as of now and we have half a season to get ourselves out of this and I am confident that we can”. Last Saturday’s match at high flying Merstham was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, denying caretaker Anthony Storey his Horsham managerial debut. The Merstham match will now be played on Tuesday February 10 and in addition the home match with Tooting & Mitcham United has been rearranged for Tuesday February 3.

As if the frailties of the playing squad were not evident enough then the fact was made perfectly clear with this totally inept performance from Horsham that lacked passion, confidence and to the most part, general footballing skills. An obviously unfit Gary Charman named himself in the starting line up which once again showed the lack of quality playing options open to him, however Charman only lasted 20 minutes before again going off injured. Worthing, like Horsham, operate on a restricted budget and lost a number of key players. However unlike Horsham they play with confidence, are well organised and have a number of decent players who are prepared to put in a shift for the team.
Photo by John Lines The score at the break was only 1-0 to Worthing, the result of an 8th minute penalty given away clumsily by King. One of Horsham’s only players of merit this season, keeper Gareth Williams, again pulled of some fine saves to keep his side in the game but even he could not stop the onslaught in the second half that saw a further four goals hit the Horsham net. Three minutes into the half King gave away his second penalty of the game to make it 2-0. Pope added a third passed the exposed Williams and then the Hapless Ryan Woodford conceded the third penalty of the match before abusing the referee to earn himself his third red card in as many matches. Richards completed the hammering in injury time to give his side an extremely comfortable win that at times they did not have to break sweat to achieve. This turned out to be the last game in a Hornets shirt for both Gary Charman and Ryan Woodford, one leaves with a greater sense of loss than the other.
Hornets humbled against Casuals Saturday December 27 - Ryman League Division One South Corinthian Casuals 4 – 0 Horsham Football Dave Smith – Sports Editor The final match of 2014 epitomised the Hornets first half of the season; lack of firepower up front a defence that is paper thin and an element of indiscipline. Despite Ryan Woodford’s sending off after half an hour and the home sides numerous efforts on goal it was somewhat surprising
that Horsham held out until 72 minutes before conceding the first goal. Casuals scored the opener after the Horsham defence failed to clear and this then opened the flood gates. The second came only 2 minutes later, followed by a third from the penalty spot in the 86th minute, after King’s clumsy challenge, and the fourth goal in injury time from an error from stand in keeper Blaney. In the middle of the four goals Anthony Storey received a second yellow for dissent leaving his team down to 9 men for the final 10 minutes and the chances of survival in this division looking bleak.
