Horsham Self-Isolation Support group established In response to the Coronavirus outbreak and the advise to self-isolate if ill, the Horsham community has come together to provide support for it’s more vulnerable residents. A facebook group called ‘Horsham Self-Isolation Support’ has been set up by our friends over at The Horsham facebook page following many messages of concern from local residents. Gavin Hewins, owner of Visit Horsham and the Horsham Facebook page told The District post: “We were getting lots of messages from people concerned about self-isolating etc. So we decided that it would be best to set up a separate group to deal with them and started to put a team together behind the scenes to help co-ordinate Horsham’s response. He continues: Within 36 hours over 1500 members of the public had joined and we had spoken to several local key people and organisations. It’s still very early days but our aim is for our group to act as a

‘pipeline’ between what we are calling the ‘downstream’ (volunteers in smaller local neighbourhood groups), and the upstream (Horsham District Council, other community organisations, and retail & service suppliers) We are particularly focusing on the elderly and vulnerable groups that may be facing long-term isolation and are looking at various ways we can help them, especially those that do not currently have internet access). We have since discovered that a national Covid-19 Mutual Aid organisation was set up AFTER our group and will align with them were possible. With millions of Britons preparing to hunker down and self-isolate to minimise risk of Corona virus, experts have revealed the cost of one month self-imposed quarantine. Experts from financial website The Money Pig say each of us can survive comfortably for 30 days on a budget of £265 without having to cross the threshold of our own front door. With some older people already choosing to self-isolate the economy is braced for impact as increasing numbers of Britons choose not to spend their cash on entertainment and meals out. Those who do choose to stay at home will also have fewer expenses without having to fork out for petrol or other transport costs and less opportunities to buy goods on impulse when out and about. The cash saving experts said some people would view a period of quarantine as an opportunity to cut back on their spending and save money while others would seek to pamper themselves and fill the house with treats to compensate for not going out. They looked at the cost of buying in three meals a day for 30 days along with household goods, drinks, snacks and other essentials. Factoring in breakfast at an average of £1 a day, lunch at £2 and

dinner at just £3 a day, the experts said it would be possible to survive on just £180 for the month. When a few extras are added such as snacks, weekend drinks and household essentials such as toothpaste and toilet paper the total came to £265 – giving a daily budget of £8.83 per person to live, eat and drink well. The experts said by buying in bulk and stocking up on tinned and frozen foods households can save considerable sums compared to their usual weekly shop. A spokesman for The Money Pig said: “Many households are currently considering battening down the hatches and staying home over the coming weeks. “While isolating against a virus isn’t something any of us would choose to do, it is likely to result in considerable cash savings for many people. “Planning ahead always helps when it comes to saving cash and the current situation will mean millions of people are doing just that. “By buying in bulk and shopping online many families will make serious savings when compared to their usual shopping costs. “Of course many people will want to compensate themselves for not going out by stocking up on treats but even then they should still be saving money

with less temptation for impulse purchase and no costs of travel or commuting.” Example meals (cost per person): Breakfast of cornflakes and UHT milk, one slice of toast, jam, tea. 1kg box of Kellogg’s cornflakes £3 at Asda. Will last for 33 servings at 9p a day. UHT milk 2 multipacks of six litres each = 12 litres total for month = £8.50 at Tesco or 28p a day. Bread: one loaf a week at £1 a loaf = £4 for month or 13p per day for three slices. Jam: two jars of Tesco strawberry jam = £1.50 or 5p a day. Tea: PG Tips 240 bags at £3.79 at Tesco = 13p a day or 1.6p per cup. Total cost of meal = 57p. Lunch: Tinned tuna sandwiches with sweetcorn and mayo. Bread as above. There still two slices left in daily ration. Tuna: 2 packs of 8 tins at £6 each from Tesco = £12 for 16 tins = 75p per tin. Sweetcorn: Frozen 1kg pack £1.49 at Tesco. 15 servings at 10p each. Mayo: £3 for 800g jar at Sainsburys gives approx. 50 servings at 6p each. Total cost of meal: 91p. Dinner: Spaghetti Bolognese and garlic

Online customers over 70 or who have a disability to get priority access to online delivery slots A statement from Sainsbury’s Chief Executive Officer, Mike Coupe was tweeted on Wednesday 18th March: “We will set aside the first hour in every Supermarket this Thursday, 19th March, for elderly and vulnerable customers. I hope that you can respect this decision and will work with us as we try our best to help those that need it the most. If you or an elderly family member, friend or neighbour would like to shop during this hour, please check online for your local supermarket opening hours. We will also help elderly and vulnerable customers access food online. From Monday 23rd March, our online customers who are over 70 years of age or have a disability will have priority access to online delivery slots. We will contact these customers in the coming days with more details. For any online customer who can travel to our stores, from Monday 23rd March, we will operate an expanded ‘click and collect’ service. We are significantly increasing the number of collection sites across the country over the coming days in preparation for this. Customers can place their order online as usual and pick it up from a collection point in the store car park. We believe

this will also work for people who are self-isolating. As we work to feed the nation, we are also focusing all of our efforts on getting as much food and other essential items from our suppliers, into our warehouses and onto shelves as we possibly can. We still have enough food for everyone - if we all just buy what we need for us and our families. To help us get more essential items onto the shelves, from this Thursday 19th March, we will be closing our cafes and our meat, fish and pizza counters in supermarkets. This means we can free up warehouse and lorry capacity for products that customers really need. It will also free up time for our store colleagues to focus on keeping the shelves as well stocked as possible. I mentioned last week that we had put limits on a very small number of products. Following feedback from our customers and from our store colleagues, we have decided to put restrictions on a larger number of products. From, Wednesday 18th March, customers will be able to buy a maximum of three of any grocery product and a maximum of two on the most popular products including toilet paper, soap and UHT milk. We have enough food coming into the system, but are limiting

The Carfax in Horsham was sizzling on Friday night (13 March) when more than 80 people walked across fire to raise money for St Catherine’s Hospice. Crowds were entertained with fire dancers, a LED light show, and music whilst brave ‘soles’ taking part had a briefing from UK Firewalk staff. They shared their top tips for successful firewalking, before people hot-footed it across 15 foot of red-hot embers. Amongst them was Kelly Petch. She said: “Wow, what an experience the Firewalk was! It was exhilarating, challenging and terrifying all at the same time, but I didn’t feel a thing. It just felt like walking on gravel. The sense of achievement is phenomenal. And I’m really proud of my son Lochlan who did the Lego walk too. He said it felt prickly and he loved everyone cheering him on! We raised over £500 for St Catherine’s who gave care and support to my Mum in her own home when she needed it most. As a family we’ll be forever grateful to St Catherine’s and will continue to help raise money to aid their amazing services.” Kevin Uphill from Avondale also took on the challenge. He said: “I’ve done a few things for charity over the years from a parachute jump to marathons and cycling, but when a colleague elected me for the St Catherine’s Firewalk, I felt far more trepidation! St Catherine’s helped my Mum in her final months and were the sole reason my Dad was able to cope with her at home right to the end. She had a lovely home, and her being there was how it should be, but it wouldn’t have been possible without St Catherine’s, so I wanted to support them. Armed with a great cause, myself and my Co Director Tim Hardman set out to fundraise for our Firewalk challenge. We soon found ourselves

with £2,580 in donations, thanks to some amazing donors, yet still no idea how we would complete it! On Friday we turned up after a very busy week at work to see a burning fire pit. After a detailed safety talk we faced the flames. The first step was the hardest, it felt totally unnatural and illogical, yet the science protected us. Before I knew it, I was across the line, feeling pretty smug, and very grateful to be able to help such a fine cause.” As well as the main Firewalk, brave under 18s faced a tough challenge of their own, braving a pit full of Lego bricks barefoot. Fran Palliser, Event Projects Fundraiser at St Catherine’s said “We’d like to thank everyone who braved the flames, Lego bricks or came out and supported our Firewalk on Friday evening. It was a brilliant night and it was humbling to watch people pushing themselves outside of their comfort zones to raise money to support terminally ill people in their community. For many people St Catherine’s has supported someone they know – a family member, friend or neighbour. At the moment, for every person we care for, there are two others who need us who we can’t help. This is something we’re determined to change. Thanks to the support of our amazing Firewalkers we’re one step closer to being able to support more people.” The Firewalk is on target to raise an incredible £25,000 but it’s not too late to donate. Protests against controversial Adversane new town plan

News Martin Read Residents from Adversane,the small conservation area between Billingshurst and Pulborough, are campaigning against plans by developer, Our Place, for a 3,500-house new town, with over 850 signatories to the petition. Kingswood Village Development

Limited, the company behind the new town, has spent £14.2 million acquiring land in the area. BigSTAND, a group of residents’ associations in Billingshurst, Broadford Bridge, Marringdean Road, Adversane and North Heath have come together to oppose the plans – covering 150 hectares of Greenfield land - submitted to Horsham District Council for inclusion in

the Council’s Local Plan. Our Place state that their ‘self-contained’ new town will include 3,500 jobs, together with a health centre, hotel, primary and ‘through’ schools, along with road and rail improvements. They propose developing the new town in five phases, with construction stretching over the next decade and beyond. The developers say: “At Our Place we understand the importance of sustainable placemaking both in terms of creating mixeduse, mixed-tenure and mixed-age communities that grow, thrive and adapt over time, but equally important in terms of limiting the impact our developments have on our planet. Our Place defines, leads and champions sustainable development.” However, residents contend that the developers have no experience of large scale developments, having only undertaken a few small scale projects, including a 23home scheme in Spitalfields and a mixed-use scheme in Norwich. Julian Trumper, Chairman of BigSTAND, says: “There are major reasons why the Adversane new town proposal should be rejected the developers claim that the new town at Adversane would be largely ‘self-contained’, with at least one job per home. This is unsupported

by any explanation and, even if large-scale employment could be attracted there is no evidence the jobs would be taken by residents, so there is likely to be a massive amount of traffic generated in the surrounding area and many extra commuters fighting for seats on trains to London at Billingshurst and Pulborough stations. Although the Adversane site is adjacent to the railway line, no new station is proposed. And, any new station will be decades away, and unlikely because of the proximity of existing stations at Billingshurst and Pulborough.” Mr Trumper continued: “There is a lack of primary health infrastructure to support such a huge population increase - the nearest A&E departments are all significant distances away, at Redhill, Guildford, Worthing and Chichester. Also, there is the threat of coalescence of Billingshurst and Pulborough and the loss of the green gap between the villages, creating ‘greater Billingshurst’ residents have chosen to live in a pleasant village, not urban sprawl. Further, the site is in the centre of the barbastelle bat sustenance zone, a protected species, and one of the reasons why Mens Wood is a Special Area for Conserva-

This proposal is wrong in so many ways. The Government says it wants to move towards a net zero carbon economy. Despite the difficulties facing our local community, as well as globally as the result of this pandemic 35 of the 40 registered teams turned out to support Horsham Lions 9th Swimarathon on Sunday 15 March 2020. In addition two of the teams that did not attend as they contain vulnerable people have undertaken to do the swim later and donate the monies raised. Despite all the difficulties, inside the swimming pool at Pavilions in the Park the atmosphere was both joyful and electric. It was a day for records being broken, a great achievement all round. 35 teams who took part, swimming 3936 lengths in the 25 metre main pool, beating the 2019 total by 648 lengths. This is equal to 98400 metres or 65.6 metric miles, again beating last year’s record by 10.8 metric miles. This event got off to a flying start by The Chair of Horsham District Council, Councillor Kate Rowbottom sounding the klaxon for the start of the first of five 55minute sessions of swimming that made up the Swimarathon. In addition Jeremy Quinn,

Horsham’s Member of Parliament also attended and took time to speak to Team leaders of some of the competing teams in order to ascertain why they were supporting this event. The Swimarathon is always held for charity and this year it is Horsham Matters. Horsham Lions will be donating the majority of its share of the monies raised by this Swimarathon and the remaining balance will help local good causes. The amount pledged, on the day was £6631.00. Horsham Matters is a small charity making a big impact on the local community. It was formed in 2006. The Charity works to relieve hardship through the provision of essential services, (food, fuel and, shelter) in order to make a positive long lasting impact on people’s lives. Crucial in this support in the community is providing emergency food for individuals and families, through The Horsham Food Bank and the running of The Horsham Night Shelter for the homeless people during the winter

A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. Horsham care home welcomes special VIP guest A care home in Horsham welcomed local MP, Jeremy Quin, who visited to learn about living with dementia and life in a care home. Care UK’s Skylark House, on St Mark’s Lane, hosted the politician for an informative afternoon, when Mr Quin had the opportunity to see the activities

residents’ dreams come true. Jeremy also met resident Gwen Barker, whose wish to cook lunch for everyone in the home was made a reality, and Audrey Merry whose wish to ride a horse again after 60 years came true on her hundredth birthday. I can’t wait to sleep under the stars in the Sahara Tina Knebel from Crawley is one of 57 intrepid trekkers getting ready to trek the Sahara in a few weeks’ time to raise money for St Catherine’s Hospice. Here she shares why she’s taking on this once in a lifetime adventure: “When I first saw the Sahara Trek advertised I knew I wanted to do it. I work as receptionist at St Catherine’s Hospice and I know we wouldn’t be here without fundraising, so I thought this could be a personal challenge as well as a fantastic chance to support the hospice. “I already do walking holidays with my husband, and I’ve taken part in the hospice’s Midnight Walk and Sussex Landmarks Hike, but I’ve never done anything overseas or tackled terrain like the Sahara so this will be completely new for me! It’s going to be a fantastic experience though, and I’m super excited, but I know I’ll feel nervous when I’m saying goodbye to my husband at the airport. “I’m most looking forward to

sleeping under the stars. When I came to an information evening about the trek there was a presentation from Jude who’s already done the trip. She said that the air is so clear there, you can see shooting stars – I can’t wait for that! “It will be nice to meet new people too. Some people are walking in memory of relatives the hospice has cared for, and for some of them, this is the first trip they’ve done without their loved one so it’s a big step. It’s lovely that I can help support people with that, and that they can support me through the challenge too. There’s even a group of us going to Marrakesh after we finish the trek to experience the culture. “When I signed up to do this, I joined the gym, and have been doing Pilates, circuit and Aqua fit classes. I now spend more time in the gym than at home so I’m in the best possible physical shape to take this on. I’ve asked for some of my kit items as gifts too

and my son brought me a battery pack and head torch for my birthday. Knowing those items are from him means they mean much more, and when I’m out in the Sahara wearing and using them, I’ll think of him. “I’ve had a lot of support from people and they’ve been really generous with their donations. I’ve even had visiting relatives at the hospice sponsor me when they’ve found out I’m going to the Sahara – I’ve been really touched by everyone’s support.” The money Tina and her fellow Sahara trekkers raise will help support local terminally ill people in their community and help towards the building of a larger St Catherine’s Hospice. How to care for your pets staying at home and social distancing

Simple tips to keeping your animals happy and healthy when self isolating The RSPCA is encouraging pet owners to think about how they will care for their animals if they need to stay at home with suspected symptoms of coronavirus. The latest Government guidance advises everyone to carry out ‘social distancing’ in order to stop the spread of coronavirus and protect vulnerable members of the community. As a result of this advice the Government has said that people can go out for a walk if they stay two metres away from people.”. RSPCA animal welfare expert, Dr Samantha Gaines, said: “There’s no evidence to suggest that pets can be carriers of coronavirus or can become ill from it themselves. We would urge pet owners not to panic and to not abandon their pets. “The latest ‘social distancing’ advice does not have a huge impact on pet owners, but dog walkers do need to follow Government advice and keep two meters away from others while they are out for a stroll.” Social distancing She added: “Pet owners who are not showing any signs of coronavirus themselves or living with anyone who has symptoms should continue to interact with their pets but adopt good hygiene practices including washing hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after touching them, their food, toys and bedding. “This is good advice at any time and not specific to the Coronavirus situation. Avoid being kissed or licked and sharing food with your pet.” Social distancing tips for keeping your pets and family safe Always adopt good hygiene practises and thoroughly wash your hands after interacting with your pets, such as rabbits, rodents, birds and reptiles. Avoid being kissed or licked and sharing food with your pet. Ensure you have supplies of pet food and medication in case of you need to stay at home. Enjoy dog walks but keep two meters away from other people Speak to your vet or doctor for more advice. Stay at home advice The charity encouraged pet owners to think about how they can care for their animals if they need to ‘stay at home’ if they or a member of the household show symptoms of the virus. Sam added: “As well as the good hygiene measures, pet owners should try and ensure you have supplies of pet food and medication if you need to ‘stay at home’ and speak to your vet or doctor for more advice. “If you own a horse or livestock and keep them on land that is not based at your address, arrange for a friend to care for them until you’re able to return to normal. If possible, arrange for another person to care for your pet (you could consider using a dog walker or home boarder). Additional guidance for people

As you will be unable to take your pet to the vet yourself, have a plan so that someone else can do this on your behalf. Sam added: “It’s so heartening to see people rallying round to support each other at these difficult times, we’d encourage anyone who needs help to ask for it, from friends, neighbours and charities. “One positive to come out of this is people will be working from home and spending extra time with their pets which is a great opportunity to try some new games.” Tips for keeping dogs happy Mental stimulation is a great way to keep your dog entertained and occupied so you can keep your dog happy by replacing exercise with other activities until you are able to take them back out for their usual walks. Try challenging your pooch at tea time - ditch the food bowl and feed Fido using a Kong or a food puzzle to get them thinking. Play, play, play! Most dogs love to play so set aside some time to have a good game of fetch or tug with your pooch. Learning a new trick or command is great mental stimulation for a dog. Get out their favourite treats and try teaching Fido how to wave his paw, ‘sit’, ‘lie down’, or ‘roll-over’. Get him sniffing - scent work can be a great way to keep them busy for ages! Hide treats around the garden or around the house and send them off in search of them. If you feed your dog kibble this can be a great way to serve them their meals! Remember toilet breaks - remember your dog will still need to go outside to use the toilet so make sure they get regular access to the garden to potter, sniff and wee. Spotify has recently launched ‘My Dog’s Favourite Podcast’ which has a range of carefully selected spoken word, sound and original music designed to encourage relaxation. Tips to keep horses happy and healthy Adopt good hygiene practices including washing hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after touching them and any shared yard items such as wheelbarrows, brooms and forks. Avoid being licked by your horse. Visit The British Horse Society websites for some practical tips.

Ensure you have sufficient supplies of feed and any medication needed. Although you won’t be able to take your horse beyond your land if you have suspected coronavirus, aim to ensure your horse is kept happy with sufficient exercise and stimulation, if possible increasing turnout, amending feeding accordingly and try providing any existing stable toys to keep his mind occupied as much as possible. Successful sales secured at Berkeley’s ‘Horsham First’ event at Everyman Berkeley successfully launched their latest new homes collection on Saturday 7 March at The Everyman Cinema at a new ‘Horsham First’ event for people exclusively from within the Horsham district. Boat trips put on hold Due to the escalation of the coronavirus outbreak and updated government advice the Wey & Arun Canal Trust directors have taken the difficult decision to suspend all boat trips until at least April 15th. The decision affects Mother’s Day trips set for this Sunday (March 17). The Canal Centre in Loxwood will also close until further notice. The Trust apologises for any disappointment the decision causes but has to ensure the safety of both passengers and volunteer boat crew.

The Granary administration office will also close until further notice and office staff will be working from home. Any fees already paid for cancelled public trip bookings will be refunded as soon as possible. All enquiries please by email to office@weyandarun.co.uk. Please be patient if you do not receive an immediate reply. Staff will endeavour to process refunds and rebookings as quickly as possible and the Trust looks forward to resuming normal operations when possible.

Sport CoronavirusIsthmian League Statement Following the decision to postpone all Premier League and EFL matches until next month, The Isthmian League has issued the following statement: The safety and wellbeing of all those associated with the League – our players, volunteers, Club Officials, Match Officials and supporters – is our number one priority, and we are closely monitoring the situation and carefully following advice from Public Health England. The Board has decided that as an immediate step matches scheduled for tomorrow and next midweek will be postponed and we will review the situation daily as to when fixtures can recommence. We understand the enormous financial impact this will have on many Clubs, but the Board feels that it is better to err on the side of caution at this time. We hope that by taking this step we can delay the spread of the virus and we earnestly hope that with the right approach there will be as few persons as possible suffering either directly or indirectly. Windlesham House boys star on Holland tour Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Washington’s leading Independent day and boarding prep school, Windlesham House - the first prep school opened in the UK - has award winning sports facilities, but even by their own exceptionally high standards, the recent boys’ hockey tour of Holland was a huge success. The 25 strong squad secured a record-breaking victory run, defeating eight out of nine well respected Dutch teams. Starting with a draw, the school stormed on to complete its best-ever Hockey performance by winning all eight of their remaining matches. The boys were based in bustling Amsterdam, and, in between training, they were fortunate to attend a number of special coaching sessions with professional Dutch hockey coaches. And, there was much more to the trip than hockey – in addition to spending time sightseeing they enjoyed a number of informative and enthralling visits, including to Anne Frank’s House and

The Nemo Science Museum. Mark Duncan, Director of Sport at Windlesham House commented: “We are immensely proud of our boys who showed real skill and determination throughout the tour, not to mention courage and team spirit. They trained hard and played against some very strong Dutch teams so this was a fantastic achievement for all involved. The evenings were mainly focused on recovery and relaxation although we celebrated ‘player of the day’ at the end of each day, with fun awards.” After completion of the very demanding round of matches, the Windlesham boys enjoyed a final celebratory dinner at Amsterdam’s renown Hard Rock Café, before returning home the following day to the West Sussex countryside to relish their success. Gullick Evening Cup teams and draw announced Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Gullick Cup organiser, Horsham Sports Club’s Chris (Shaka) Shambrook, is delighted with the renewed interest and support from local cricket enthusiasts for the popular, longstanding Gullick Cup competition and has just released details of the format and draw for this season’s tournament, telling the District Post: “The Gullick evening tournament is aimed at non regular cricketers and those who play in the lower leagues and this year we’ve had even more teams entered – 14 – including Wipro, a new team to the competition, and we just hope that we can complete the tournament, despite the current coronavirus pandemic, especially as the winner will gain access to the new Sussex Slam Plate competition, with the prospect of the final at Hove.” The Gullick Cup began in 1972, originally as a plate competition

for the Mirfield Cup, the T20 format being introduced long before its adoption by the professional game worldwide. Although the Gullick is a knockout tournament, the preliminary matches are on a round robin basis, Shaka continuing: “We will start with four groups, two comprising four teams and the others with three. They will play the each other in their group once with the top two teams in each group progressing to the Quarter Finals. The remaining teams will compete for the plate, so every team will have at least three games, with the Semi Finals, the Cup Final and the Plate Final all played at Horsham’s main ground. Preliminary matches are to be completed by June 26th with the Final at Horsham Cricket Club on Tuesday July 21st and the Plate Final the evening before.” The teams entered in the tournament – comprising 10 previous winners - are Bat and Ball, Billingshurst Bruisers, winners

The Gullick Cup Final is a longstanding highlight in Horsham Cricket Club’s extraordinarily busy calendar of matches – a well-supported, convivial event, the competition being played in that sprit throughout with much banter between friendly rivals, Shaka Shambrook summing up by saying: “The revised playing conditions and draw details have been circulated to the Secretaries of each team - this is a great opportunity for fun cricketers to enjoy some evening matches with the chance of winning some silverware playing in a final in the very special surroundings of Horsham Cricket Club.
