Plans for West Sussex’s new firefighter training centre and fire station revealed Proposals for West Sussex’s first state-of-the-art fire service learning and development centre and new 24-hour fire station have been revealed.

West Sussex County Council is proposing the £21m development for land off the A24 at Highwood Mill, near Horsham.

A public exhibition to showcase the proposals will take place from 4 to 11 March at Horsham Library.

Two drop-in sessions for people to view the proposed development and chat to the fire service and architects will be held at the library on: Thursday 5 March 4pm – 7pm Saturday 7 March 9am – 12 noon The 24-hour fire station will incorporate all the best practice around firefighters’ health and wellbeing, including designated ‘clean’, ‘transitional’ and ‘dirty’ areas for firefighters returning from incidents.

The learning and development centre will include residential accommodation to deliver firefighter training. In addition to various training rooms used for digital simulations and assessments, three ancillary buildings will assist in the delivery of real-life scenarios:

training facility for our firefighters and these will be among the best facilities in the UK. “It has also been a vision for more than a decade to create a new fire station for Horsham.

These are ground-breaking plans being put forward by the County Council for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service and I would encourage people to come along to

the public exhibition.”

Following the public exhibition, a planning application will be submitted in the spring.

HNW Architects are leading the design of the project and Willmott Dixon Construction have been appointed as the contractors to take forward the project.

CBBC’s Saturday Mash Kayla’s Cut! Up visits Horsham!

Before half-term, Holbrook Primary School, Horsham welcomed Stanley and a CBBC film crew to film a collection of video clips for the popular children’s TV show Saturday Mash-Up. The film crew were based at Holbrook all day with the new (puppet) presenter Stanley who came to experience life in Year 4 classroom in a primary school.

Both children and staff were fascinated to watch how the crew filmed the clips and learnt a lot about the roles that each crew member had as part of a team.

Amazingly, the whole day of filming only produced a short three and a half minute video that was shown on the popular Saturday morning show.

“It was a great day for everyone involved,” said Ian Holmes, Head teacher, “The crew were extremely professional and it was very exciting for the children to see themselves and their school on national television.”

On 3 March a local 8 year old girl is cutting her hair off in aid of 2 charities, Little Princess Trust and Horsham Matters.

Horsham Matters was contacted by mum, Karen, as her daughter, Kayla, wanted to donate her long hair to the Little Princess Trust in order to make real hair wigs, and also to raise money for the homeless.

Karen explained: “Last summer, my daughter Kayla said to me she didn’t think it was fair that she had such beautiful hair when there were little girls who were poorly and didn’t have any hair. She asked to get it cut off

“She also often comments on homeless people and wants to help them, and she has always wanted everyone to have a home. As we live in the Horsham area, we thought raising money to help others in our area would be good.”

Kayla wants to be sponsored to cut her hair and the money raised will go to the Night Shelter, run by Horsham Matters, which provides a safe environment in which to sleep, a warm meal and access to additional support services which are intended to try and move them to a much more stable and sustainable place.

The Night Shelter runs with the support of seven local churches who provide the venues and many of the dedicated 250 volunteers who make it happen, and requires financial donations to support its operation until the end of March 2020.

Team Chestnut runners on track to raise £40,000 from the Brighton Half 130 runners braved the wind and the rain on Sunday 23 February, taking part in The Grand Brighton Half Marathon 2020 in aid of their local children’s hospice, Chestnut Tree House.

From keen runners pushing for a personal best to those taking part in fancy dress, ‘Team Chestnut’ are on track to raise an incredible £40,000.

The first person to finish for Chestnut Tree House was Steve Bird from Burgess Hill,

who completed the race in an impressive 1:28:49. Steve said: “It was very windy, but a fantastic day, and lots of money was raised for fantastic causes.

I’d like to say a bit thank you to everybody who was out on the course supporting the Chestnut Tree House runners.”

Another Team Chestnut runner who highlighted the importance of the support from around the course, was 33-year-old Andrew Spencer, who ran the

Brighton Half wearing full cricket gear: “It was great to have all the support. Everyone cheering you on from the side-lines and handing out jelly babies – they really kept me going!

“It was pretty difficult to be honest, with the 50mph winds, but I’m really pleased I’ve done it.” Andrew completed the race in 2:17:40 and has currently raised over £1,400 for Chestnut Tree House.

The next big running event is the Brighton Marathon Weekend, which includes the BM10k.

Entries are now closed for the Marathon itself, but there is still time to get involved in the BM10k, and join over 60 people who have already signed up to be part of Team Chestnut on Sunday 19 April 2020.

Firefighters are urging residents to check whether their electrical appliances have been recalled after a tumble dryer fire.

A crew from Horsham was called to attend a fire in a second floor property on New Street at 2.52pm on Wednesday 5 February.

Upon arrival at the scene they found the fire was already out, but carried out an inspection of the appliance using a thermal imaging camera to identify any hotspots.

It was then discovered that the tumble dryer was on a recall list issued by the manufacturer.

Horsham Watch Commander Alistair Green said: “We would urge everyone to check whether any of their electrical appliances have been affected by a product recall.

“Anyone who has an appliance that has been recalled by the manufacturer should contact the company for further advice.

“West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is urging residents to register their appliances online to be kept

updated about any product recalls that may affect them. Appliances up to 12 years old can be registered on the Register My Appliance website.

“More information on electrical fire safety can be found on the WSFRS website by searching for ‘electrical appliances’.”

Walk to support your local charity The Aldingbourne Trust are inviting people to join their coastal charity walk on Saturday 14 March, where you can enjoy a beautiful eight mile walk along the seafront from Littlehampton to Bognor Regis.

Abigail Rowe, Fundraising Officer at the Aldingbourne Trust said: “This walk will provide an opportunity for the local community to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the South coast, with the proceeds going towards supporting adults with learning disabilities and/or autism. Please join us if you can.”

The Aldingbourne Trust com-

pleted their new Quarry Building at the Aldingbourne Country Centre, which has enabled them to offer an additional 175 training spaces in their café, conference rooms and shop to support people with learning disabilities and autism living in the local area.

The Trust now urgently needs to develop their private space for the adults with disabilities that they support. With over 60,000 visitors a year at the Country Centre it is important that there is a private area away from the general public for the people they support and train, spend their breaks, socialise with each other, receive advice and support.

The Charity Walk will help the Trust to raise these much-needed funds to provide this inclusive space for the people they support and enable the Trust to provide more spaces to support adults with learning disabilities and/or autism within West Sussex.

Join in the fun on March 14 where the walk will commence at the Littlehampton Golf Club at 8.30am and finish at the Aldingbourne Trust enterprise Number 73 Aldwick Road, Bognor Regis for tea, coffee and cake. All ages are encouraged to take part, and dogs are welcome too.

You can register now at www. aldingbournetrust.org/fundraising-events; There is a fee of £10 per person to take part in the walk, which will go towards the Trusts current fundraising project.

Pupils enjoy a taste of Brinsbury College

More than 80 young people were able to find out firsthand what studying at Brinsbury College would be like.

Last week, the college hosted a taster day for pupils aged 1215 from the local area, which gave them the chance to sample the specialist land-based courses.

The purpose of the day was to give the students an idea of what they would learn in their chosen subject, as well as experience a typical day as a Brinsbury College student at the beautiful 540 acre campus.

Taster sessions were run across a variety of courses, including dog grooming, agriculture, equine, blacksmithing, landscape gardening, tree surgery and animal care.

The young people soon found themselves getting involved with a variety of jobs, from assisting with calves who were being vaccinated, to groom-

ing horses, cleaning out the homes of rabbits and guinea pigs, and feeding goats, alpacas, donkeys, sheep, ducks, geese and chickens.

The feedback from the young students was fantastic. One student said: “I got to learn about the structure of horses and have more of an insight into the courses that they offer here at Brinsbury.”

Another added: “I was able to have a more in-depth day and it gave me an idea on what a normal day would be like.”

Sally Challis-Manning, Principal at Brinsbury College, explained: “Choosing the right course is really important, which is why our taster days are so valuable - not only do they show potential students what we offer here at Brinsbury, they also inform young people about the wide range of careers in land-based industries.

“They give young people an opportunity to get ‘hands on’ experience in subjects they wouldn’t ordinarily have access to until they start college, so they have an idea of what to expect and if it would suit them.

“And by spending time on campus, with our staff, they can find out more about what college life involves and the career paths that these courses can lead to.

“It was fantastic to see so many pupils come in to experience what we have to offer here at the college and to receive so much positive feedback. We’re looking forward to seeing them back at Brinsbury in the future.”

New tennis league for Horsham this spring Horsham District Council are working with national organisation Local Tennis Leagues Ltd (NTL) to launch an exciting new tennis league in Horsham Park this spring.

The Local Tennis League concept is all about creating more opportunities for people to play a tennis match in their local park environment.

The Council’s recently refurbished tennis courts in Horsham Park make the perfect venue for friendly, competitive tennis for local players.

The new league is an ideal way for people to get back into tennis, enabling them to play singles matches with people of similar abilities.

Every player who completes three matches by the midway point of any round of tennis will receive a free can of tennis balls and there is a prize for the winner of each group.

Horsham District Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture said: “Promoting good health and wellbeing is at the heart of what we do at the Council and new opportunities like this do much to support this.

“It’s great to see our Sports Development team working so hard to create new programmes to encourage as many people as possible to get involved with something new, get active, and socialise with new people.

“We have great tennis facilities in Horsham Park so let’s make the most of them.

“I would encourage as many of you as possible to sign up and get involved in friendly competitive tennis.”

The leagues are open to adults aged 18 and over. They are mixed sex, singles leagues, so men and women play each other.

Multi-million-pound investment agreed for digital future More than £20million is to be invested in West Sussex’s digital infrastructure to deliver gigabit-capable broadband.

The funding for several ‘full fibre’ projects was agreed by the county council’s Cabinet today (Tuesday). The schemes will be financed from the Business Rates funding pool.

Bob Lanzer, Cabinet Member for the Economy, said: “I’m delighted to see this further, significant investment in the county’s digital infrastructure.

Councils in West Sussex are innovating in a space created by slow commercial investment and trying new approaches to see which are most effective in expanding gigabit-capable connectivity to all areas of the county.”

Since 2013, the county council has been addressing the challenge of digital connectivity speed and coverage and has successfully delivered better, faster broadband to more than 70,000 homes and businesses.

Thousands more people can now access ‘superfast’ broadband than would have been the case if left to the commercial market alone.

The county council’s Digital Infrastructure Team is working with district and borough councils and central government to further develop a vision for the county’s digital future. This includes increasing ‘full fibre’ and maximising coverage of gigabit-capable broadband through The West Sussex Full Fibre Programme.

Bob added: “This new, evolving programme aims to increase county-wide coverage of ‘full fibre’ digital infrastructure so that we benefit

from the fastest, most reliable broadband and are ready for any commercial investments in future technologies.

“We are developing our approaches with commercial suppliers and the government department responsible for digital, The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). Our proposals work with the market to stimulate investment and we are mindful that further government intervention may also be required to benefit our hard-to-reach areas.”

The programme is focused on three priorities: developing the network within and between key towns; enabling the extension of the network into rural areas; and accelerating readiness to Wi-Fi and 5G investments.

On Tuesday, funding was agreed for projects which include building on the countywide initiative to build new gigabit-capable services to key public sector sites and exploring with the commercial market its appetite for early investment in rural areas.

The first episode of the new series of MasterChef aired this week on Monday (24 February).

Ahead of this, four children at Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice enjoyed a special cookery session on Wednesday 19 February, thanks to a visit from the MasterChef Champion 2018, Kenny Tutt.

It was announced in November that Kenny had become an Ambassador for his local children’s hospice, and he has been keen to get more involved ever since. His first initiative was to introduce a charity cocktail at his Worthing restaurant, Pitch, with £1 being donated to Chestnut Tree House for every ‘Chestnut Alexandra’ sold. He is also visiting the hospice soon with his restaurant team to volunteer in the gardens.

But the cookery session last week was a particular highlight of this charity partnership, both for Kenny and the children involved.

Sam, Owen, Toby and Rose all enjoy cooking when they’re at Chestnut Tree House and were thrilled when Kenny showed them how to make their own pasta. After a demonstration, Kenny helped each of them make their own pasta dough and create spaghetti using a pasta maker. The MasterChef Champion then took to the kitchen to make some meatballs and sauce for them all to enjoy with their homemade spaghetti. They were all given a Pitch apron, and even got a chance to hold Kenny’s MasterChef trophy.

House said: “This was a really special day for Sam, Owen, Toby and Rose. There are always lots of fun activities for children to get involved in at the House, but for these four, cooking is always top of the wish-list when they’re asked what they’d like to do.

“We’re really grateful to Kenny for giving up his time to visit and organise this activity. Everyone had a great time, and there definitely weren’t any empty plates at the end! Chestnut Tree House provides care and support to around 300 children with life-shortening conditions and their families across Sussex and South East Hampshire, both at the hospice and in families’ own homes. The cost of providing this service is over £4 million per year, yet the hospice receives less than 6% central government funding so relies on the generosity and support of the community to continue providing vital care to local children and families.

March is Wellbeing Month at West Sussex Libraries Next week marks the start of Wellbeing Month across all 36 West Sussex libraries.

Throughout March, libraries will be celebrating all the ways that books, reading and local libraries can help people stay healthy and well.

Special events taking place include: Wellbeing MOT’s – offering advice, help and support on healthy diet, weight loss, stopping smoking, reducing alcohol, and more.

West Sussex MIND - will be advising residents about their new campaign ‘Moving Minds’ and providing information about the mental health services they offer.

Apetito drop-in and free taster - come and sample some of the delicious foods on offer from West Sussex County Council’s Meals on Wheels provider Apetito, who provide hot meals to elderly and vulnerable people across the county (Southwick library only).

There will also be NHS health checks, reminiscence taster sessions, story walks for children, games for families. Plus regular events including Knit and Natter, Relax with Colouring and ‘Melody for the Mind’, a singing

group for people with dementia and their carers.

‘Melody for the Mind’ sessions are currently run at Broadfield, East Grinstead and Southwick Libraries, with a brand-new session starting at Chichester on Thursday 5 March.

Duncan Crow, Cabinet Member for Fire and Rescue and Communities, said: “Libraries always have communities at the heart of everything they do, and this month is no exception.

“Wellbeing, both physical and emotional, is so important and the programme that has been created by the libraries team for Wellbeing Month has a variety of great activities, events and reading that will hopefully make our residents feel happier and healthier in mind and body.”

All libraries will have displays of books chosen by library staff to lift the readers mood and help them feel better. The genres range from uplifting poetry to non-fiction titles with practical advice for difficult times.

Pupil-led Mental Health Conference at Christ’s Hospital a “Huge Success”

Delegates from schools all over the country convened at Christ’s Hospital on 13 February for the School’s first ever pupil-led Conference, on the topic of Mental Health and Wellbeing.

The event was organised by a group of 19 senior pupils at Christ’s Hospital, with minimal help from staff and included a special keynote speaker and workshops run by mental health professionals.

The group decided to take action after they noticed that there are no such mental health/ wellbeing conferences being run for the primary benefit of students and young people, although many already existed for teachers and adults. They found this to be deeply concerning, particularly as it is such a topical issue. The conference attracted so much interest that the pupils had to change to a bigger venue; on the day, over 150 attendees travelled to Christ’s Hospital from all over southeast England to represent over 20 independent and state schools.

“The Christ’s Hospital Mental Health Conference was a huge success; each workshop and the plenary panel acted to give a forum through which mental health could be considered, questioned and discussed. The idea to host a pupil-led conference on an increasingly important topic was ambitious, but that ambition indisputably paid off. From the start, we said

that the day would be a success if at least one person, whether student, teacher or parent, left feeling more confident to support themselves and even others in wellbeing. Seeing 22 schools together talking and learning about mental health therefore made the day successful in itself.

I am incredibly proud to be a part of the Monitor group that organised it,” said Andre Da Silva-Jenkins, head pupil (Senior Monitor) at Christ’s Hospital.

The keynote speaker was Suzi Godson, The Times newspaper’s sex and relationships columnist, award-winning author, blogger and founder of MeeTwo – an app which provides a safe and secure forum for teenagers wanting to discuss any issue affecting their lives where they can receive anonymous help and advice from both mental health experts as well as other teenagers going through similar experiences.

Records broken at ‘NG2U’ employability evening A record 460 students and parents attended Collyer’s “Not Going to Uni” (NG2U) evening and were treated to a lively “Question Time” style session, facilitated by Deputy Principal Steve Martell, outlining the post college world of employment and training.

Although the majority of Collyer’s students progress to university and higher education, a number of them are contemplating taking alternative progression routes, including sponsored degrees, degree apprenticeships, professional qualifications, apprenticeships or moving directly into the job market.

Experts quizzed by the audience on the night included: Thomas Lilliott (Assurity Consulting), Jill Durrant (NHS), Jordan Humphrey (Nestle), George Herritts (Easy Jet); Charlie Harrison (Edwards Vacuum), Jon Arnold (Oyster Worldwide Travel), Anthony Greenfield (UK Border Force), Neil Hutchinson (Goldman Sachs), Faisal Ahmed (Metricell) and Guy Watts (Architectural Plants). Dominic Wakefield (Wakefields Jewellers and Collyer’s Governor) also took questions on careers in retail and making yourself employable.

The experts explained that students need to be proactive to become credible candidates for employment, and it became clear that alternatives to higher education are not an ‘easy way out’ after college, but actually prestigious and popular pathways.

In addition to the tv-style question and answer section of the evening, students and parents were able to meet representatives from 50 organisations (another college record for this event!) that provide these opportunities. The growing success of NG2U reflects the interest in the host of post 18 pathways now available to young people.

Deputy Principal Steve Martell said: “This amazing evening was brilliantly managed by Collyer’s

Employability Programme Coordinator Lucy Hargreaves, with help from our wonderful team of student ambassadors on the night. My thanks go to them, our very own Ian McAlister and all the presenters and stall holders for making this popular event so successful.”

Lucy Hargreaves said: “The NG2U evening is hugely important and follows hot on the heels of a busy programme of progression activities, including guest speakers, mock interviews, employability skills workshops and a host of other events in conjunction with key national, regional and local partner organisations. The feedback from students, parents and stall holders has been massively supportive of the employability work we are doing here at Collyer’s.”

Ex Collyer’s student Charlie Harrison (Software Apprentice at Edwards Vacuum) said: “I have now visited many careers events at schools and colleges and feel that Collyer’s is the best I’ve seen. Steve, Lucy and Ian really care about helping their students on their journeys after sixth form. It’s so nice to see that Steve’s still got the same energy and passion that he had when I was in year 12!”

Lucy Hargreaves said: “Next year, we are planning a rebrand, changing the event to ‘Next Steps’, to better reflect the broad opportunities we are now presenting. We are also working up plans for this year’s Challenge of Management event at South Lodge Hotel, which, again, we are hoping will build on previous success.”

Ian McAlister (Collyer’s Director of Higher Education and Progression) added: “Next month we are running trips to the UCAS fair, Oxbridge and will be presenting our own Higher Education evenings. It really is an exciting time of year for our students!”

Horsham District Draft Local Plan 2019-2036 The Government wants a very big increase in the numbers of new homes that are built and this in turn requires Horsham District Council to provide for a significant increase in the number of new homes in our District over the coming years. To do this the Council must produce a new Local Plan to guide where future developments could go, up to 2036.

The purpose of a Local Plan is to set out how a council can deliver developments in a sustainable way and support the delivery of community infrastructure, transport links and provide opportunities for local jobs.

Under the existing Local Plan our District is already seeing a high rate of house building and under the Government’s new requirements, this number will greatly increase.

Producing a new Local Plan with such high building numbers is a very difficult task and it is clear that no site ticks every box. The decision about which sites ultimately get allocated will depend in part on the responses received during the current consultation period.

The Council has produced a consultation document. It shows potential sites for new homes that have been submitted by developers and the assessment of these by the Council against a number of criteria.

It is important to note that no site has been selected by the Council to go forward. We want your views on each site, not just one that might be near to you.

Residents urged to have their say as draft Horsham District Local Plan consultation continues Horsham District Council is required by Government to provide for an unprecedented increase in the number of homes in the District.

This is a huge challenge for the Council and it urges all residents to read the development options and have their say. The purpose of the Draft Local Plan is to guide future developments in the Horsham District until 2036.

None of the sites in the draft Local Plan has been selected by the Council. The document looks at potential sites that have been put forward by developers and assessed

by Horsham District Council for suitability. There are a number of potential sites listed in the document, but it is anticipated that only some of these will ultimately be allocated for development.

The decisions of the Council on sites to be allocated will depend in part on the responses it receives during this consultation. The site assessments have been published so that residents can read about the possible options, see how they have been assessed and give their feedback.

The public consultation on the Horsham District Draft Local Plan (Regulation 2018) is now open and ends at 5pm on 30 March 2020.

Cllr Claire Vickers, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Planning commented, “Many thanks to all of you who have already given feedback on the draft Local Plan.

“Our public consultation is now half way through and I urge everybody to continue to give us their feedback on the options put forward by developers.

“I wish to emphasize that although potential sites are listed in the draft consultation document, no choices have yet been made.

The decisions of the Council on the sites to eventually be allocated will depend on the feedback we receive during this consultation.

“The Local Plan will help ensure that any developments are in suitable locations, helping the crucial delivery of local job opportunities and are set out in the Plan with contributions from developers to provide community infrastructure and upgrade transport links.

“Failure to produce a Local Plan will put these vital elements in jeopardy and leave us exposed to unacceptable developments in totally unsuitable locations which none of us want.”

Supporting background documents will also be published on this website, including a Sustainability Appraisal (which considers what the environmental, social and economic effects would be) and an Infrastructure Delivery Plan (which considers what infrastructure will be needed to deliver growth).

Horsham District Council’s free drop-in business advice sessions are fast becoming must-attend events for anyone thinking about setting up a new business or expanding the business they already have.

The Council staged the second of its free to attend business support events at its offices on Tuesday 18 February, and was delighted with the number of individuals

and businesses that attended.

The events are targeted to those who are thinking about starting a new business, have just embarked upon running their own company, or are wanting to expand an existing business, and offer free advice on grants, funding, training and much more.

Commenting on the event, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for the Local Economy

Cllr Paul Clarke said: “I am really pleased that so many local entrepreneurs and fledgling businesses came along to benefit from this event and all the free advice on offer.

“We had plenty of specialists on hand on the day to provide answers to the many and varied questions of all the attendees.

“Anything from planning consents required, operating

Lucy explains why she wanted to take part, “A friend of mine mentioned this trek and I instantly knew I wanted to get involved. St. Catherine’s is such an important local facility and over the years I’ve known a number of people who’ve spent their last few weeks there.

It’s given them dignity and space

at perhaps the most important point in their and their families’ lives.

When my daughter heard about the trek, she wanted to join me.

She was only 13 at the time so I had my reservations but over the last year, she has consistently trained hard and raised over £2,000. Training has consisted of putting up with me for hours on end as we trek across the Sussex countryside! Once we get to Morocco, what an amazing experience it will be for us both.

Winter Time at Bolney Wine Estate Winter may be a quieter time of the year for many businesses, but at Bolney Wine Estate the hard work continues as their vineyard teams are busy preparing their vines for another year of grape growing and wine making.

We asked the teams across both their Bolney and Pookchurch sites to tell us about winter in the vineyard. Here’s what Laura from Pookchurch said: ‘Winter in the vineyard evokes a certain sense of calm, but as part of the vineyard teams at Bolney and Pookchurch, we’re kept on our toes at this time of year. Over the last month, we’ve had the physically demanding task of

pruning the vines – which is the second biggest job in the vineyard calendar after harvest.

After a period of dormancy following harvest, our teams get back to handling our precious vines and we make key decisions to help lay the foundation for how the vines will develop in future seasons. We had a wet start to 2020, which meant we had little opportunity to get outside and begin pruning, so we’ve worked well into February over at Pookchurch to get this done. Our Bolney team were in a position to start pruning in mid-November across our Eighteen Acre and Foxhole vineyards so they’ve also had the chance to start what we call ‘pull-

ing out’, which is the next stage of the process to remove the prunings from the vines (essentially the old vine wood).

Before budburst in the spring, the next task for our vineyard teams will be tying down the vines.’

To celebrate its starring role in the 1985 film A View to a Kill, Amberley Museum is holding a James Bond Weekend on the 2829 March.

With a re-enactment of the famous scenes featuring Roger Moore and Stacey Sutton outside Main Strike Mine, appearances by stuntman and actor Derek Lyons, Aston Martins, a children’s codebreaking trail, films and music, there will be something for everyone, but especially anyone with an interest in Bond movies. The event will co-incidentally precede the release at the beginning of April of the 25th Bond film No Time to Die. The scenes leading to the blowing up of May Day, played by Grace Jones, were filmed at the entrance of a quarry tunnel near Brockham Station at the Museum, which appeared as Main Strike Mine in the film. The original Zorin Industries locomotive and trucks that featured in A View to a Kill will be running in and out of the mine entrance over the weekend in a humorous re-enactment of the scenes filmed at the Museum.

Permission has been granted for A View to a Kill to be shown as well as archive footage of the filming at Amberley and a BBC interview with Roger Moore on the Amberley set in 1985. New James Bond story boards will be erected near the ‘Mine’ entrance featuring images taken by local people who happened to see the filming take place. These will be unveiled by Ian Dean, the first Director of Amber-

ley Museum, who was present at the filming.

Derek Lyons, who was a stuntman and actor in several Bond films, including A View to a Kill, will be reminiscing about his experiences and signing photographs and Bond experts from the 007 magazine will also be hosting Q and A sessions. The Aston Martin Owners Club have put out a call to their members to bring along their cars for the weekend and a cavalcade around the Museum site will take place at 2pm each day.

It is hoped that visitors will come dressed as Bond or co-stars and win spot prizes for best dressed – with younger aspiring spies or actors taking part. Youngsters will also be entertained by a new Codebreaker Trail.

Two musical acts will perform Bond themes over the weekend – ‘Vintage Candy’, a Sussex based duo, will entertain visitors on Saturday and ‘Sarah Sussex Violinist’ will be coming along on Sunday to provide some exciting violin interpretations of Bond and other cinematic theme music. The Limeburners Café will be open all day until 5.30pm with cocktails on offer, a must for any event celebrating James Bond.

This event is included in normal admission prices. Gift-aided tickets are £15 for adults, £13 for concessions and £8 for children aged 4-15 (under 4s free). Family tickets start at £31. The Museum will be open from 10am on both days.

Four hands, one piano, discover the double act who ‘declassify’ classical music The internationally acclaimed pianists and supreme showmen, Worbey & Farrell have entertained all over the globe and achieved millions of hits on YouTube with their sparky comedy and sensational pianoplaying.

Now they return to Brighton Dome this March as part of Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra’s Sunday afternoon concert series, bringing their own unique style to the world’s greatest music.

“We like to think of the piano as a symphony orchestra” said Steven Worbey. “We like to utilise the piano to its full potential.”

Having performed everywhere from the Royal Opera House to the maiden voyage of Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 to ITV’s This Morning, their work is diverse, ranging from a two-month sell-out run in Vienna of the Canadian smash-hit play, Two Pianos Four Hands, to performing in shows with the late Mickey

Rooney in the USA. In 2018 they made their debut with the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra playing Malcolm Arnold’s Piano Concerto and Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals.

Each of the pieces performed in this concert is a unique arrangement which can take months to finesse. Their version of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, described by Worbey as “very rhapsodic!”, took a year to orchestrate. With Prokofiev’s classic Peter & the Wolf, the

audience are told to expect a very different ending. “It’s Peter & the Wolf with a difference” says Kevin Farrell. “It’s normally set in Russia; ours is set in Doncaster.”

Expect a show for all the family, as Worbey & Farrell give the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra the weekend off and take centre stage on their single piano stool. The programme includes their own version of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, Addinsell’s iconic Warsaw Concerto, Prokof-

iev’s Peter & the Wolf, the theme from Ladies in Lavender and Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody.

Horsham Showcase: The Review By Derek & Sue Sturt Ariel Company Theatre started their drama Academies in West Sussex in 2004, the 6th and most recent being formed in Horsham in April 2018, so we were very pleased to be asked to review their Annual Showcase.

This was held at the lovely New Bury Theatre at Hurstpierpoint College on Sunday 16th February, and what a great evening this turned out to be. Even Storm Dennis couldn’t keep the packed audience away!

Ariel teach the 3 major disciplines in theatre of drama, song and dance and have 60 members in the Horsham Academy made up of students from 5 to 19 years, divided into 4 age groups, (Ariels 5-7/Prosperos 8-11/Orsinos 11-13 and Tempests 14+). The Othellos+ are students with special needs, who joined the Horsham Showcase as they rehearse on a different night usually, and they all had the chance to show their talents during a nearly 2 hour varied programme.

The lights went down and the show started with the full Academy slowly coming on stage to the song ‘Rise Up’. They choreo-

graphed their way on and off the stage with great precision. It was a wonderful opening number with a sea of red & black t-shirts.

They then wowed us with a mixture of dancing, drama & singing that came across as professional and well-rehearsed. They were very confident and were thoroughly enjoying their performances, as did the audience.

Having been active in musical theatre, we were especially interested in the sung pieces, even though we weren’t always familiar with the songs, they were performed with great style, by all the groups, showing some very talented students and great harmonies as well as storytelling.

The drama pieces, some being set work for the LAMDA exams, were performed with great presence, feeling, understanding, and awareness of using the stage well, although occasionally quite dark in nature.

The older students’ acting was brilliantly executed, very powerful & hard hitting.

The dance numbers were very well choreographed whether for single dancers or the full compa-

ny, using the large stage area fully and effectively. Also, a special mention to the 3 Othellos+, whose pieces were such fun and it was great to see their confidence & joy to be on the stage.

Technically the show was presented fairly simply, with effective lighting and haze effects, no scenery other than a couple of white boxes and it ran smoothly with no hold ups. There was a lovely personal touch when the Prospero’s sang ‘A Better Place’.

The background was full of photos of ‘special people’ in their lives and a beautiful ending showing the whole group, this brought many a tear to the audience.

The young performers, regardless of age, obviously loved being on stage and enjoyed the chance of working together, had fun and gave their audience of fans a totally special evening. We haven’t mentioned any individual names because every one of the Academy can be very proud of what they achieved. Who knows what the future may have in store for them!

Leading ‘Big Wall’ Climber Pete Whittaker comes to Horsham Pete Whittaker is one of the world’s top big wall solo climbers, having made the first solofree ascent (in 2016) of Yosemite’s notorious 3000ft El Capitan in under 24 hours and the first solo-free ascent of Mt Watkins (2000ft) in just 15 hours (2017).

In 2018, Pete followed these significant achievements by completing a sub-24 hour solo of both El Capitan and the 5000ft Half Dome. Pete now brings the stories of his many remarkable feats to audiences across the country in a brand new ‘audience with…’ style stage show, Solo & Free, coming to The Capitol on Monday 9 March, presented by Speakers from the Edge in association with Wild Country.

In Solo & Free, Pete takes audiences on a journey, from the sub-culture of crack climbing and astronomical lactate pumping athletic feats, to speed solos of the world’s biggest cliffs. Driven by the physical and mental challenges and suffering, Pete looks to

schools and colleges, we must congratulate Ariel for the brilliant work they are doing – the tutors, admin, technical staff etc., to make performance such a joy for hundreds of young people at their 6 academies in West Sussex.

Final touches to be made at innovative Wisborough Green development Jones Homes is putting the finishing touches to a development which was designed to set a new standard for new-build homes.

The innovative design approach adopted at Bluebell Meadow in Wisborough Green acknowledges that people who want fewer rooms don’t necessarily want them to have any less space.

Jones Homes invested heavily in the design process to ensure the development would fit well within the village. The company has also paid more than £250,000 towards infrastructure to support Wisborough Green as it expands.

Bluebell Meadow is a development of just 25 homes off Petworth Road. Each home boasts oversized rooms, including spacious open-plan kietchen/dining areas and large bedrooms.

Mercurial game ends in narrow defeat for Horsham YMCA Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Saturday February 22 - Horsham YMCA 0-1 Newhaven

Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter YMCA beat Newhaven 3-2 in November at the coast, and although the fortunes of the clubs have taken different paths since then, with YM mid table and the visitors second prior to this game, YM might have at least managed a draw last Saturday.

While, on the other hand, the Dockers missed several golden opportunities and so could equally have won by a much greater margin.

The game was marked by the reappearance of the long-sidelined YM Assistant Coach Dave Brown, returning from injury with a strapped up ankle. Newhaven fielded dangermen, prolific scorer Lee Robinson, and his lively accomplice on the wing, Mo Diallo. The game’s first opportunity at either end was created by a Newhaven incursion, Bailie Rogers firing wide. YM then got through, but skipper Ash Dugdale’s cross sailed harmlessly over the goal, Robinson’s brother Ian supplying Seb Saunders, whose diving header was only marginally adrift. After Brown fed Matt Daniel, who was only able to get in a weak shot, YM had to scramble away a Diallo inspired thrust, former Roffey cricketer Aaron Jeal batting the ball way with an outstanding reaction save. But, Jeal was unable to keep out – or get a hand anywhere near - Ian Robinson’s superbly taken penalty after an undisputed, blatant flooring in the box in the 20th minute. Three Luke Gedling free kicks, including two from the half way line, failed to make any impression, Newhaven quickly getting six defenders in position to block YM’s advances, neutralising YM’s first corner. Henry Watson sent Diallo forward, before a

Tristan Jarvis set piece tested Jeal, who then had to save a Rogers shot with his feet, ahead of a great YM intercept thwarting Rogers. Just before the half time whistle, a Newhaven corner was headed past the post by Robbie Keith.

Resuming one up, the visitors had an early corner, YM then being relieved when Lee Robinson somehow missed an open goal. YM pressure earned them two corners and a free kick, the game getting feisty with players barged off the ball with impunity. Both sides then had opportunities, but Brown and Lee Robinson were too aerial, and Diallo fired well wide when adjacent to the goal-line, and was then sanctioned for interfering with the ball when YM were about to take a free kick. Lee Robinson and YM’s Ash Wadhams were then both off target, before Robinson’s radar malfunctioned with only Jeal to beat, the keeper then racing out to kick to safety with Diallo rushing towards him. Sensing the possibility of shared points, YM were challenging, young players coming on to make a difference, Daniel shooting past the post, with action switching for Lee Robinson and Rogers to be similarly wayward. A promising YM build up was thwarted and then a tantalising opportunity somehow evaporated when Wadham’s sliding kick right on the line avoided the goal when it looked easier to score. With the final whistle fast approaching, a Newhaven free kick crashed into the wall and they subsequently blasted wide with the goal at their mercy.

On Saturday YM, now 12th, is at home again to welcome 17th and struggling Saltdean United to Gorings Mead. In September YM beat Saltdean 4-1 at their Hill Park ground. Meanwhile, Lancing remain top, five points clear of Newhaven with Loxwood superglued to the bottom, 11 points shy of Hassocks.

Coming into this game Margate were eight places below Horsham in the league, but they were looking for a hat trick of wins on their third visit to the town this season, having beaten both Horsham – comprehensively in the league and YMCA – more narrowly - in the FA Cup. But, this time the east Kent side’s 190 mile round trip was in vain, Horsham triumphing in a competitive game in which they created far more goal scoring possibilities than Margate, and kept the visitors at bay after taking the lead with a stunning early goal of which there has been several at the Camping World Stadium this season.

Horsham started brightly and were soon rewarded with a goal, of which any top professional side would have been proud, Steve Metcalf putting in an excellent cross from the right for skipper Jack Brivio to race onto and head home, earning high praise from Horsham’s beaming CEO John Lines, who told the District Post: “Than was a wonderful goal – Brivio’s so fast!

He’s our best player, so inspirational.” Horsham continued to press to secure the game, Harvey Sparks unleashing a clean strike from the right and Greg Cundle probing from the left, only to lose his footing at the critical moment. Rob O’Toole and Lee Harding continued the offensive, but both went down in the box, O’Toole clashing with The Gate’s keeper Joe Tupper. Sparks and

Harding then fired over, before Horsham had two successive corners, left and right. Sparks fed Cundle, but Horsham’s second goal failed to materialise, sub Charlie Harris blazing over as the first half ended 1-0 in Horsham’s favour, having fashioned numerous promising chances.

The second half began with similar liveliness, Sparks running through and then supplying sub Chris Smith, who hit the post. After a Margate corner was punched clear, their Captain, Ben Swift was sent off, a violent incident being flagged up by the linesman. Margate responded, with Chris Sessegnon testing Hornets’ keeper Geoge Bentley, who was relieved to recover from his spilled save. A likely looking Harris floater was caught by Tupper, ahead of Smith getting into contention but then passing to a teammate when he was in a better position himself, O’Toole heading to the keeper to round off the wave of Horsham

attacks. Margate caused a scare when, with Horsham looking uncharacteristically open at the back, a ball was squared across the goal, but no Kentish player was on hand to take advantage.

Smith headed over and after Horsham passed the ball around, Harris’ eventual rocket whistled over the bar. Margate number 10, Noel Leighton subsequently dispossessed a defender, his shot crashing mercifully wide when the outcome might have been different had he taken time to compose himself. With Horsham still wanting to seal victory, Harding got into position, but finished weakly to Tupper. Four added minutes were signalled, followed by a Horsham corner, but, strangely, there was only one yellow shirt in the box.

However, although Horsham’s creativity did not result in more goals, as it might well have done on another day, they had done enough to be deserved semi finalists.

Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter With 12 league games still to play, impressive Horsham completed the double over the struggling Hertfordshire visitors in front of a 600+ crowd at the Camping World Stadium last Saturday.

The three valuable points place the Hornets sixth in the table with 54, and two games in hand over fifth-placed Carshalton, on 56 in the tightly bunched list of play off contenders. Leaders Worthing has scored 67 points from their 32 matches with current runner up Folkestone on 61 from 31 starts.

The game was marked by the 150th appearance of Horsham stalwart Steve Metcalf and the Hornets started as they meant to proceed, Lee Harding testing Harry Girling in the visitor’s goal in the opening seconds, before Chris

Smith first sending over a withering cross, which unfortunately eluded a teammate, and then rushing through to supply skipper Jack Brivio, who was off target. With the mid point of the half beckoning Cheshunt joined the party, but ex Hornet Zack Newton’s shot went wide of the target, and it took an outstanding intervention from Metcalf to prevent Cheshunt’s Taylor Miles from causing embarrassment, Horsham promptly going ahead when Harding notched up a hat trick of successes from his last four games. Harding was challenged en route, but rushed through to beat Girling with an excellent strike into the far corner of the goal. Trailing Cheshunt then shot themselves in the foot – or, rather, Amadou Kasaratte did, by being sent off eight minutes before the break. Having received an earlier yellow card for a flagrant handball, he then felled Greg Cundle, to terminate his own participation, the score remaining 1-nil in Horsham’s favour at the interval.

Horsham resumed in challeng-

ing mode, but this time Harding headed Harvey Sparks’ feed wide.

The Hornets, though were not having everything their own way, Tanasheh Abrahams and Ryan Moss combining to create a genuine scoring opportunity, keeping the Hornets honest, Horsham’s resolute defending paying dividends, when, instead of the score being 1-1, it became 2-0. Again Harding made telling ground, bursting through to supply Brivio, who only had to side foot home from close quarters. Brivio and Cundle then tormented the Cheshunt defenders, but the finish was wayward. New signing Alex Clark came on at the expense of Cundle and quickly jangled Cheshunt’s nerves, until they were relieved to get the ball away.

The visitors then sought to get something from the game, pressing forward, but Harding to broke away with the ball eventually reaching Metcalf via Smith, but the thrusting manoeuvre fizzled out with a wide shot. Horsham, though, kept pushing, but Brivio could not control his header before play switched

to the other end, where, after Jamie Reynolds was adrift, Hornets’ keeper George Bentley diverted a screamer from Reece BecclesRichards. With Girling out of his goal, Charlie Harris launched a long range aerial attempt, but it was just too high, until, with the referee looking at his watch, there was still just time for Sparks to

cross to Clark, but there was to be no dream start for the debutant, who shot well wide.

Belize complete double over young Horsham

Photo courtesy of The Horsham Rugby Club Saturday February 22 – RFU London 1 South League Horsham 12-31 Belsize Park Rugby Nick Stocker, Head Coach Horsham welcomed Belsize Park to Coolhurst for their first ever league visit and were ultimately left frustrated at getting no return in a match that was far tighter than the eventual scoreline suggested.

Belsize, like Horsham were promoted last season and have had a very successful season in London 1 to date, securing victories over the likes of Camberley and Westcombe Park whilst playing a high tempo and clinical brand of rugby. Having conceded 22 unanswered points in the first 10 minutes in the corresponding away fixture, and knowing that Belsize had a tendency to start quickly, Horsham were keen to avoid the granting of any head start. The opposite proved true when the game remained scoreless for the first 30 minutes as both teams cancelled each other out.

Horsham were profligate with the opportunities created with the ball in hand, looking far more danger-

ous than Belsize, but decisions in the red zone proved crucial as four try scoring opportunities in the first half were missed. Belsize on the other hand visited the Horsham 22m on two occasions in the first half and came away with two tries - one from a driven maul following two successive penalties granting field position on 30 minutes, and the other, a line break following a missed tackle at the fringe of a ruck on 33 minutes. With one of these tries converted, the teams turned around with Horsham 12-0 down.

The second half was a similar affair with Horsham the more dominant in terms of field position and possession but failing to take the chances created. Chief contributor to this was a totally malfunctioning lineout in the face of a brisk wind which prevented the conversion of any pressure created. The scrum on the other hand proved dominant and a solid source of possession and penalties. One such penalty was quickly taken by live wire scrum half Aaron Linfield who darted towards the try line and with Conor Riley in support, the two youngsters fashioned a nicely taken try on 41 minutes which went unconverted.

Despite a set back on 45 minutes when Belsize scored following the granting of possession with a well executed kick return which was supported through multiple phases, Horsham were once again the team looking the most likely to prevail. On 50 minutes, with solid scrum ball moved into the wider channels, Declan Nwachukwu was on hand to finish strongly and with Tom Johnson converting well from out wide, Horsham were back in the game at 17-12 with 30 minutes left to play. But, unfortunately, with kickable penalties eschewed and the lineout failing, Horsham did not overturn the deficit and conceded two tries in the final ten minutes to hand Belsize a bonus point and see them increase the gap over Horsham in the league table with the final score 31-12 in the visitors favour.

Whilst initially frustrated at the result, on reflection there are positives to be drawn, especially including the fact that eight of the starting team were 18/19 years old and this ultimately was the difference in the two sides. Belsize were more experienced at game management and took each opportunity created on their five visits to Horsham’s 22m. They identified where Horsham’s game plan went astray and maximised their return from this which is certainly an area that we shall need to development with time. The result was disappointing, but there were some notable performances from the likes of Elliot Powell on debut in the second row and Nick Bell in the front row. With Aaron Linfield busy as usual and Conor Riley enjoying a good outing, man of the match was eventually awarded to Jordan Smith who performed at his consistently high standards.

On Saturday we welcome promotion hopefuls Westcombe Park who will prove a stern test. With both sides having now lost two games on the trot, the pressure is on to see who can reverse the run.

Keith’s trip than just cricket, as he explains: “Although I’ve travelled a fair bit, this was my first time on the African continent so we wanted to take full advantage of the opportunity and climbed Table Top Mountain and visited Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for all those years.

And, of course, we had to see some football, too, and were lucky to get to a game at the spectacular Green Point Stadium – built for the 2010 World Cup, the venue for the Final and subsequent South African Rugby 7s tournaments. Its now the home of Premiership clubs Ajax Cape Town and Cape Town City, not far from the centre and close to the Atlantic Ocean.”

When asked whether, now that he’s broken his duck, would he like to go on another overseas trip to see the England cricket team again, Keith immediately replied: “You, bet ! I can’t wait to do it again, perhaps to Sri Lanka, or somewhere equally interesting – and I’ll be sure to take the YM flag when I do – it did the trick in C

Horsham’s survival ambition sustains severe blow Saturday February 22 – Premier – Division 2 East London Academicals 2-1 Horsham Men’s 1st XI Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter This bottom of the table clash at the City of London Academy’s ground in London’s Bermondsey was a much-needed target win for Horsham in their survival campaign, but, while they had opportunities, they were shaded by the odd goal.

Previously when Horsham’s Men had played London Accies – at home in November - they lost 2-6, despite leading 2-0 early in the game, but the team has improved considerably since then, having won three of their five games before last Saturday’s visit to the capital.

On Saturday Horsham went a goal down when the hosts ran through the middle, but overseas player Matt Barnett scored, maintaining parity at 1-1 at the interval.

A second half London Accies’ goal then undid Horsham, Player Coach Andy Blood telling the District Post not long after the whistle: “This was a big game for us, so we’re disappointed, of course – especially as we dominated the first half after going a goal down. Then, after the break, we let in a weak goal and missed chances, also picking

up some regrettable stick tackle cards. We could have won had we converted the opportunities created, but our goal scoring has been letting us down. But, our performances and results have been so much better since Christmas, which is highly creditable, thanks to our improved commitment, having lost seven players this season. We’re defending better, too, so today’s outcome is a great shame for us.

We can still stay up, but we need to be disciplined and win all of our remaining games. Everybody needs to be on their A game now!”

On Saturday, with Horsham needing something of a miracle to stay up, they play 3rd in the table Sevenoaks 2 in their penultimate home game, with a 1.30pm push back at Christ’s Hospital. Then, in the last three games of the season, firstly Horsham visit Blackheath & Elthamians, before their final home game – against Old Bordenians - the season subsequently culminating with a long trip to Canterbury.

Meanwhile, Wimbledon remain top, seven points clear of Old Georgians, with Eastbourne in the penultimate berth, seven above Horsham. Last Saturday Wimbledon (with 76 goals scored and 21 against, both the best stats in the league) beat Epsom 6-2, while Old Georgians thrashed Old Bordenians 10-1.

Ladies Club Captain Charlotte “CJ” White put Horsham one up from a short corner in the second quarter, before Elle Blakesley scored in open play after accepting a through pass and reverse-stick sweeping the ball home. In the 26th minute Broxbourne pulled a goal back from a short corner, with a deflection giving goalkeeper Hannah Jackson no chance, but that turned out to be their sole success.

In the second half an umpiring “misunderstanding” temporarily deprived Horsham of Jackson’s services when the keeper was sin-binned, the official thinking she had been sworn at when Jackson was trying to fire up the Horsham defence. Under new rules, no replacement keeper is permitted when the sanctioned player

is dismissed from the field, Fran Crossley telling the District Post: “In sending off Hannah a short corner was awarded against us and CJ and Gill Adams did some heroic defending of a total of three shorts in all with no keeper, and, amazingly, Broxbourne were prevented from scoring. Then, in the final quarter, Louisa Campbell scored our third, polishing off a good win for us.”

This Saturday, sixth-placed Horsham travel to take on Southgate, one spot above them in the table. The north Londoners won 5-0 in October’s reverse fixture, but, although the Ladies might be hit by non-availability of two players, the team is on a roll and playing well.

After visiting Southgate, on March 7th Horsham return to Broadbridge Heath for their final home game – against Bromley & Beckenham (4th), ahead of two tough away fixtures – against current runner up Barnes, before finishing their league campaign on March 21st versus runaway leaders Wimbledon. Meanwhile, Broxbourne occupies the penultimate spot, shaded by a point from Canterbury, with Ipswich, seemingly destined for relegation, in the basement with just three points.
