Horsham Enterprise Park proposals have taken a major step forward with the go-ahead for the county council to seek a development partner. The partner will carry out a high quality, mixed use, commercial and residential development on the Wimblehurst Road site. The coun-
cil’s public Cabinet also approved the use of £4.157m for site enabling works and infrastructure improvements and other professional services connected with the project at their meeting on Tuesday. Jeremy Hunt, Cabinet Member for Finance, said: “The agreement to procure a development partner

The council has also committed to ensuring local residents and businesses are well informed as the scheme progresses, and will be announcing dates for Community Information Events in the coming months. Background: The county council purchased the site, formerly owned by Novartis Pharmaceuticals in Wimblehurst Road in December 2016. The key driver for the council’s investment in buying the site was to sustain and build on its long-established position as a major centre for highvalue employment in Horsham town, as a key contributor to the local, county and sub-regional economy.

The second Silvertip Films Horsham Film Festival took place at The Capitol Theatre on 13 February 2020 with an evening of comedy, drama, documentaries, animation and music from HAODS! Over 120 people attended, comprised of shortlisted filmmakers, family, friends and supporters and local business figures. The festival judges this year included Geoff Cockwill, director at Silvertip Films, Chris Croucher, producer of Downton Abbey, Davey Pearson, editor of The District Post and Emily Beach, actress and Silvertip Films Vlog presenter. Between them, they watched through the 50+ entries which covered a broad range of genres and shortlisted 20 films for the Festival. The event was hosted by Jess Jay who hosted the 2019 event and we were also joined by special guest Nicola Hume, fresh from her triple roles in The Capitol’s 2019 panto, Peter Pan. The Over 18s entries comprised of 15 shortlisted films across the Best Comedy, Best Drama, Best Animation, Best Documentary and Your District categories and 5 shortlisted films in the Under 18s category which covers all types of film. Each shortlisted film had a clip played on the night and each winning film was played in full, to enthusiastic applause from the audience. We were thrilled to be able to present all 6 winning filmmak-
ers with their awards and prizes in person on the night as well, sending home a number of happy filmmakers. Our winning films on the night included… Quiet Carriage which took home the Best Comedy award. A short about a man frustrated by the incessant chatter of a young woman in the quiet carriage on the train, sees the situation escalate massively out of hand. Superb performances, direction and production made this a hit. Directed by Ben S. Hyland. GRIT was the winner of the Best Animation award and a 6 month labour of love for filmmaker Matt Thomas, creating a stop motion and CGI mixed short about two blocky characters engaged in a battle. This is ME was the Best Drama award, a touching story about a young woman struggling with ME, determined to do more with her life who is helped by the kindness of strangers when the struggle overtakes her. Brilliant work from first time filmmaker Josh Pickup. David Ralph: The Great British Custodian was the Best Documentary winner and looked at the passion for the Wolseley, a true classic car, by the current owner/custodian David. A beautiful mix of traditional film and modern digital film from James French. The Last Battle the winning
film in the Under 18s Award was made by Jake Payne and took a look at the horrors of war, told through the eyes and thoughts of children. One aspect of the Festival is to shine a light on the sites and filmmakers within the Horsham District via the Your District award which is for films made

holiday makers. The film was shot at the Deadwood western town and was directed by Edward Headen. Gaslight is a short drama, nominated in the Over 18s Your District Award which features a woman meeting a man who isn’t quite the catch he initially seems. The film was partly shot in the district and was directed by Zoe Ashan. Another Love Story in the Under 18s Award category was made fully in the district by 2019 winner Tom Gerrard. Funding boost for rough sleepers in Horsham District Horsham District Council and its partner agencies are enhancing their services to end rough sleeping in the Horsham District following a successful funding bid. The substantial funding of £317,717 has been awarded from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) and will enable existing outreach services (delivered by Turning Tides on behalf of the Council) for rough sleepers to be extended and additional new services to be launched. The funding bid saw Horsham District Council and Mid Sussex District Council join together to increase opportunities for learning, impacts and joint positions across both districts facing common challenges for those rough sleeping. Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Community Matters and Wellbeing Cllr Tricia Youtan said: “As a council we are determined to tackle homelessness, as well as its causes. In fact we are committed to stamping out rough sleeping in our District by 2027. “We have worked hard to secure this extra funding and are de-
lighted that the Government has recognised our bid. “This considerable funding will make a significant difference to the positive work that is already underway with our various partners across the District and support us in introducing new initiatives for the future. “The districts of Horsham and Mid-Sussex have worked together closely to develop this joint funding bid and have an excellent working relationship based on the recognition of shared challenges and goals. “We expect to start putting the funds to use as soon as possible and will be ready to mobilise the improvements by Spring 2020. “ The funding will: • Enable specialist provision for mental health support through the joint recruitment of a Mental Health Practice Lead to cover Horsham and Mid Sussex • Enhance outreach coordination capacity to effectively cover and support both areas, enabling us to reach and engage higher numbers of those rough sleeping across the region, particularly the “hidden homeless” and those that have traditionally been difficult to reach
• Increase outreach provision across the districts enabling us to connect with rural rough sleepers and those who are currently completely disengaged from services • In addition, specialist services for the client group will be implemented. There are several ways that residents and visitors can already help rough sleepers: Report those visually rough sleeping to Streetlink (https://
www.streetlink.org.uk/ ). If you are concerned about someone over the age of 18 that you have seen sleeping rough in England or Wales, you can use this website to send an alert to StreetLink. The details you provide are sent to the Council and Outreach Service, to help us find the individual and connect them to support. Donate to rough sleepers specific needs contactlessly in Horsham through terminals in
Crates, Candybox, The Capitol, Waitrose and John Lewis. Horsham District Council’s Homeless team are in partnership with local community group Horsham Matters and non-profit organisation Greater Change to help combat homelessness in the Horsham District, giving local residents and visitors a more effective way of donating directly to people living on the streets.

The Cato Street Conspiracy: A regency terrorist plot with a surprising Horsham connection horsham museum February 2020 marks the 200th anniversary of one of the most audacious terrorist plots in British history, and yet today it is largely forgotten. Each year we celebrate the failure of 1605 Gunpowder Plot, when religious fanatics planned to blow up Parliament, but few people know that Cato Street was a plot to murder the Prime Minister and the entire cabinet. The conspirators were led Arthur Thistlewood, a previously ordinary man fundamentally changed after spending a year in Horsham Gaol. The conspiracy was
not driven by religious motives, but by a desire to fight against social injustice. The story begins in 1818 when Britain was suffering an economic depression following the Napoleonic Wars. Arthur Thistlewood, a radical, was campaigning for an end to social injustice and increased political rights. In addition to his wider campaigning, he was also in dispute with the Home Office regarding the sum of £180 which, Thistlewood claimed, had been taken from him whilst under arrest for promoting revolutionary acts in 1816. At the end of January he wrote to Lord Sidmouth, the former Prime minister and now Home Secretary, requesting the return of the money. After waiting two days for a reply he challenged Lord Sid-
mouth to a duel with the words, “I leave the choice of swords or pistols to your lordship. As for time, I shall brook of no delay”. Lord Sidmouth, fearing the public would think him a coward, considered facing the challenge rather than taking legal action, but the Prince Regent and the Cabinet argued him round. Thistlewood was charged with behaving in a manner likely to cause a breach in the peace, a crime unlikely to gain a prison sentence today, and was sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment. He entered Horsham Gaol on 28th May 1818. Thistlewood thought Horsham Gaol “most unsatisfactory”, mainly because of the overcrowding and the excessively strict discipline. At the end of June he wrote to Lord Sidmouth saying that it was truly

disgusting for two or three men to sleep in a cell measuring nine feet by seven and asked to be transferred to Maidstone or Winchester. He said after his release that he preferred the Tower of London to Horsham Gaol On his release in June 1819, having received no reduction in his sentence for good behaviour, he returned to 40 Stanhope Street in London a changed man. In 1817 the papers had described Thistlewood as a stout, active, cheerful-looking man, with a determined expression and a rather devil-may care air. By 1819 he was much thinner, almost emaciated, and though still active and determined, he was anything but cheerful: “He was often seen hurrying through the streets of Holborn and the City, a slim, dark-haired man with a long face and sallow complexion, shabbily dressed in a blue greatcoat and pantaloons.” At this point Thistlewood was disaffected and felt that any attempt at revolution was hopeless. Instead, he decided to take more direct action against the Government, and developed a secret committee of thirteen who shared his beliefs. Their first idea was to stage an attack on the House of Commons, but due to insufficient numbers an attack on the Cabinet was instead proposed. Unfortunately for Thistlewood, there was a spy in his group. His second in command, Edwards, was feeding information to the Government. In order to continue to receive Edwards’ intelligence on the group the Government decided to allow the plot to develop. The aim of the conspirators was to assassinate the Cabinet ministers at dinner, attack a high profile bank such as Coutts’s or Child’s, set fire to public buildings, then seize the Tower and Mansion House where they would set up their own provisional government. By the
end of January 1820, wearied with waiting, Thistlewood took the management of the plot entirely into his own hands retaining only Edwards in his confidence. A proclamation was prepared and drawn up containing the appointment of a provisional government and the calling together of a convention of representatives. The death of King George III on 29th January that year was regarded as especially favourable to the plot. The conspirators took possession of a loft over a stable in Cato Street on 21st February in preparation for the attack. However, on the evening of 23rd February they were caught in the act of arming weapons ready for their first planned act, the murder of the Cabinet during dinner at Lord Harrowby’s house. The conspirators didn’t go down without a fight. Thistlewood stabbed and killed a police-officer and initially managed to escape capture. He was taken the next day at 8 White Street, Moorfields. and was again imprisoned in the Tower of London. After three days’ trial from 17th to 19th April Thistlewood was found guilty and sentenced to a traitor’s death, he was hanged drawn and quartered. He and the other prisoners were supposed to be dragged along on a hurdle and disemboweled whilst alive, but the Privy Council, out of deference to humanitarian sentiment, decided against the drawing and quartering. Thistlewood was hanged for 30 minutes, with four other conspirators, in front of the debtor’s door in Newgate on 1st May 1820. The criminals were publicly decapitated after death. Thistlewood died defiantly, showing the same spirit that he exhibited at the end of his trial when he declaimed, “Albion is still in the chains of slavery”. The importance of the event was marked with the publication of prints setting out the location of the acts, shown here.

Maxwell sees the light KEVIN GRIFFIN thanks to NCS teens CARS
The life of a severely disabled child from Pulborough has been made a little brighter thanks to the fundraising efforts of a group of local National Citizen Service (NCS) teenagers. The teens, led by Brinsbury College student Hollie Cheesman, spent last summer completing the NCS programme and fundraised to buy an Opti Aura sensory projector for local child Maxwell Smith. The soothing, shape-morphing light projector is now installed at Maxwell’s home and dad Peter says his son ‘absolutely loves it’. Maxwell, six, has a rare genetic disorder, mitochondrial Tk2d, which causes progressive weakness
of his muscles. He needs roundthe-clock care and cannot breathe or move without support. Peter explained: “The light projector is now an important part of Maxwell’s day. It’s the first thing he sees as he wakes in the morning and it soothes him to sleep at night. “Knowing that Hollie and her teammates organised events and volunteered a large part of their summer for Maxwell’s benefit is truly inspiring. It was a great achievement. With so many expenses to cover for Maxwell’s care, any extras to help stimulate and interest him are very welcome.” Hollie, who is 17 and from Storrington, described herself as being
“the most quiet, shy person ever” before undertaking NCS. After two weeks of challenging outward bound activities and independent living tasks, she and her teammates planned social action projects including a music performance, sponge throws and selling merchandise to fundraise almost £400 for Maxwell’s projector. “Maxwell and his family live near me and I knew we could do something positive to help,” said Hollie, “It was a challenge for me as I didn’t like speaking on the phone and it took in the region of 50 phone calls to organise all the activities, but NCS really built my confidence. I made some great new friends and we all appreciated how lucky we were to have the opportunity to try new things on NCS. I’m glad we have now given Maxwell a new experience to enjoy too.” NCS, run regionally by Ingeus, is a leading youth empowerment programme, open to all 16 and 17 year olds, that takes place in school holidays. Social action for a local community cause or charity is an integral element. Maxwell is the only child with mitochondrial Tk2d alive in the UK today. His family and local community fundraise tirelessly for medication, hydrotherapy, physiotherapy and specialist equipment to give Maxwell a better quality of life. http://ourmaxwell.org/ To find out more about the NCS programme, visit wearencs.com

Surrey Ceilings based in West Sussex is collecting Easter eggs for terminally ill people in a hospice and the ceiling company is looking for as many donations as possible. St. Raphael’s believe the end of your life is as important as the life you have lived. They care for people who live with terminal illnesses and their families. They offer at home-based and in-patient care, wellbeing services and bereave-
ment support. Surrey Ceilings celebrated 50 years in business last year and its reputation is built on honesty, personalised customer service and excellent levels of workmanship. With that in mind, we feel it’s important to help out the community however we can. She added: “Every year St Raphael’s make Easter hampers that they ask the local community to raffle to raise funds for the hospice. All donations are welcome, large or small, they all count towards making someone have a brighter day.” Egg donations need to be dropped off at Chesworth Estate Agents in the Carfax, Horsham opposite the bandstand by 4pm Wednesday 26 February. Inspectors find West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service has made ‘tangible improvements’ A revisit by inspectors has reported that West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service has made ‘tangible improvements’ in a number of areas. Inspectors noted ‘a clear commitment’ by the fire service and West Sussex County Council to make improvements. They said they could see an accelerated pace with the improvement work over the past few months, mitigating the risk to public safety. Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services revisited the service last month, following an inspection in November 2018. In a letter to the Chief Fire Officer, Sabrina Cohen-Hatton, they said there were ‘tangible improvements’ with Prevention and Protection activities. The inspectors went to five stations, spoke to staff in areas where they identified issues, and interviewed those responsible for implementing the service’s action plan. They noted that staff told them they felt supported and included in the improvement work, especially new IT solutions. They praised the service’s new Programme Management Office’s ability to support driving these improvements forward with staff. In her conclusion, Dru Sharpling, the lead HMI Inspector of Fire and Rescue Services, said: “During this
revisit we found a clear commitment from you and the WSCC to make the improvements the service needs. You recognise that more action is necessary, but we have seen tangible improvements, especially within the last four months, in mitigating the risks to public safety we identified.” Areas they asked the service to consider further included how it quality assures its Safe & Well Visits. This is in line with a national theme which says services need to more to evaluate their prevention work. The service will now use all the inspector’s feedback to further improve our work. Chief Fire Officer, Sabrina Cohen-Hatton: “It is really important that the service is moving forward. We have since been re-inspected on fire protection and prevention and tangible improvements were found to be made. With the council’s ongoing investment into West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service and the continued hard work and dedication of my staff, I have every faith we will continue to improve. Cabinet Member for the Fire and Rescue Service and Communities, Duncan Crow: “A lot of work has been going on to address the issues raised at the first inspection. It is a journey, but I have every confidence that we are moving positively and in the right direction as the re-inspection visit has demonstrated.”

Horsham’s Apprenticeship Fair returns On Saturday 29 February, Horsham District Council and West Sussex County Council will once again co-host the Horsham Apprenticeship Fair. The fair, will be held at the Drill Hall, Denne Road, Horsham and will take place between 10am and 2pm. It will see some 40 local and national apprentice employers and training providers from a wide variety of sectors present their current and upcoming opportunities. The event is free and anyone is welcome to attend. It is one major route for young people starting out on a career, but also older, more experienced people are now able to retrain using apprenticeship courses. Commenting on the return
of the event, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for the Local Economy Cllr Paul Clarke said: “I am really pleased that this key event is making a return this year after the last two year’s successful events, where literally hundreds of people have been successfully placed in jobs and on training schemes. This year’s Apprenticeship and Traineeship Fair follows on from the previous two years’ successful events, where 85 exhibitors with more than 800 opportunities have seen a total of 2000 visitors attend the events. “Apprenticeship training programmes let you gain real work experience (and earn money) while you learn and at the end you receive a recognised qualification.

Heroes joined Spider-Man, from Super Hero Parties, to take on the challenge which raised over £3,400 for Home-Start CHAMS. As well as sponsorship for the run, local children came up with a range of ways to raise money, from sweet and cake sales after school, a Fundraising Day at nursery, to doing chores around the house. Each year Home-Start CHAMS help hundreds of local children in families dealing with issues such as abuse, mental health, financial problems, or serious illness. Their trained volunteers work with the families, helping parents to overcome these challenges and give young children the best possible start in life. Aneliese Whittaker, Fundrais-
ing and Marketing Co-ordinator at Home-Start, said: “This event is a fun way for local children to get involved and support other children. We are so grateful to Super Hero Parties, Tilgate Park and Tilgate Parkrun, who are supporting this event again.” This event is open to all ages and abilities - under 11’s must be accompanied by an adult. There is a £5 per child registration fee to enter and every Super Hero is asked to take on the mission to raise much needed funds for vulnerable local children. Cutting down the woodland waste Bench Joinery students at Crawley College were recently visited by guest speaker Professor Alan Aylward, from the Woodland Trust, who gave a fascinating lecture about the work they are doing to save, restore and plant new woodlands across the UK. Alan spoke to the students about how important ancient woodland is for the environment, how timber has been used in the past, how it is being used now and how it will likely be used in the future. He also discussed how timber can lock up carbon dioxide and revealed that modern technology has enabled timber products to be manufactured to be as strong as concrete. Speaking afterwards, the students were full of praise for the lecture which had proven to be informative and thought provoking. Kaiden Illing said: “I’m surprised to learn that only 13% of the UK is woodland compared to 30% in most European
countries.” Tony Allen added: “I was amazed to find out that they can build skyscrapers which are mainly timber frame construction.” The aim of the lecture was to educate students to think about the impact the construction industry can have on the environment, especially when they work with wood most days. Trevor Francis, lecturer in carpentry & joinery at Crawley College, said: “This was vital information for the students to learn about, as timber is now being used in very modern ways such as building of high rise building or ‘Plyscrapers’. “New technology is allowing timber to be engineered so that it is very strong, stronger than concrete in some cases and fast to fit. “Alongside this the environmental factors and benefits of using timber will influence construction and the environment in the future.”

South Downs MP supports Co-op Local charity celebrate campaign to tackle retail crime reaching ripe old age of 20 Staff at Co-op Steyning
Arundel & South Downs MP Andrew Griffith visited the Co-op store in Steyning High Street last Friday (14 February) to hear how retail crime is affecting shop floor staff and looking at ways to fix the problem. The MP met Jenny Alleyne from the Co-op’s Head Office, along with the area management team and local store colleagues, to discuss a programme of work which the retailer is undertaking to make shop floor work safer. The ‘Safer colleagues, safer communities’ report looks at the
importance of looking after their staff, noting “stock and property can be replaced, people can’t.” The report also outlines their response to the growing issue. This includes upgraded CCTV, staff headsets providing connectivity to colleagues, and a significant partnership with SECOM which provides remote security monitoring. The MP heard the shocking national statistics that every day 250 shop workers are the victim of a violent incident, with many thefts involving confrontation
and weapons. The most common assaults happen when shopworkers are simply trying to enforce the law by challenging and verifying the age of those wishing to buy age-restricted products. If shop-workers don’t enforce the law then they are personally liable for breaking it. Mr Griffith met one of the young employees from Co-op’s Steyning store and listened to his personal account of being assaulted when simply doing his job. The impact was felt, not only by the employee, but also his family and colleagues. The MP tweeted after his visit: “This really is important to me. Staff in our retail stores need to be – and to feel – safe. As @ KatyBourne knows, offenders must be tackled and prosecuted. No one is above the law and no crime is too small to be followed up.” Mr Griffith added: “I am grateful to the team at Steyning’s Co-op, and the store’s head office, for raising this issue with me. It was important for me to hear about this first-hand and to meet the staff affected but these specific crimes. I have offered my support in looking at how we can tackle this locally and nationally and will be discussing this when I next meet with the Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne.”
Local charity, West Sussex Mediation Service, who were bestowed the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2019, are now celebrating the fact that they have reached the ripe old age of 20 in 2020. The charity helps people suffering conflicts in their lives find lasting solutions to their problems and specialises in resolving neighbour disputes and conflicts within families. Having started out with humble beginning in Horsham, with nine volunteer mediators, it now covers the whole of West Sussex with 60 skilled mediators, providing a wide range of mediation services - many of which are free at the point of delivery. In order to sustain the free services, various fundraisers are organised by the charity. The significant one to be held in 2020 is an ‘Auction of Promises’. This is

where individuals, or businesses can make a pledge of an item of value, an experience, or their skill or talent for an hour or two. A catalogue of promises is then drawn up and the auction is arranged. The charity will announce the date and venue for the auction in due course. Some of the pledges made so far include dog grooming, an afternoon of Racing at Lindfield Park Resort, a gents haircut, Man with a Van to move stuff, chef to cook, gardening for a few hours, skin products, session of life sketching or painting, two tickets to a Choir Concert, a case of Hepworth’s Sussex Pale Ale and a print of a recent piece of exhibited art by Juliette Goddard MA (RCA). Service Co-ordinator for the charity, Nick Handley said: “We are pleased that the charity has managed to survive and even thrive, despite their {sic} being huge pressure on grants and funding. We hope to make our Auction a fun evening event with food and a paying bar. We welcome any pledges to help with the fundraising. We are also looking for an experienced auctioneer.” 2020 is expected to be another challenging year for the charity, in terms of income generation. It deals with over 300 referrals a year and expects to train more volunteer mediators in 2020 to keep up with demand.

Ten years of IT services The Woodstock Team
Students focus on film and TV degrees Collyer’s recently welcomed a tutor and 3 current undergraduates from Ravensbourne, widely regarded as one of the country’s top media and design universities. Collyer’s media and film students were introduced to the university experience, and in particular to the bespoke training courses in this field. During the two hour event, a lively and informative Q&A outlined career opportunities in the media industry, and the training and experience required. University and apprenticeship routes were also discussed and the visitors kindly took time out to speak to the Collyer’s students in small groups and individually. Head of Subject for Media Jonathan Nunns was absolutely delighted: “Literally inspiring. The students had a brilliant time and got a direct practical insight into careers in the creative industries
and how they link with Higher Education courses. We are hugely grateful to Ravensbourne for this wonderful opportunity, they are massively supportive of the work we are doing here at Collyer’s and
I was particularly pleased with our students’ forensic questioning about how to make themselves employable for television and film jobs in the future.”

Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity Business Ambassador for fifth year Nasser is owner of Business Pulse based in Horsham and has been in partnership with Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity since 2015. He has been an invaluable advocate for us, providing us with great introductions to other businesses (some of whom are his clients and others whom he thinks we could and should be meeting). And through these contacts, we have gained a number of corporate champions. In
addition, Nass has organised annual corporate networking days at the races for our benefit that have raised considerable funds for the Charity. Pilar Cloud, Executive Manager at DVLCC, says ”Nass’ efforts for us behind the scenes have been significant. He is a fantastic champion for this Charity – he understands the importance of charities and businesses working together (and in a plethora of different ways), and ensuring that we are able to
share our story more widely.” Nass said “Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity is a wonderful charity and I am honoured to be have been asked to become a Business Ambassador. I am delighted to give my corporate support by organising a couple of events each year, including an annual race day to raise funds and networking opportunities for introductions to other businesses who may wish to partner with the Charity.”
Metrobus’ bus drivers star in new film to recruit more drivers Brighton & Hove and Metrobus’ drivers share their stories about what it’s really like to drive a bus in a new film aimed at recruiting more drivers. It’s a peek behind the scenes of a driver’s typical day, beginning with daily vehicle checks, driving different bus routes, socialising in the canteen and paying-in at the end of the day. In it, drivers discuss how they feel about their jobs and the benefits of becoming a driver, like good pay, pension and holidays; job security; social life; a varied workday and independence. Whitehawk driver and driver mentor, Elisa Harkness, said she agreed to take part in the film because she wanted to give people an insider’s view on what the job was like: “No two days are the same, driving in and around Brighton and Crawley you get to see the real culture of both places. “The work life is good fun and our fellow drivers are great. I’ve loved meeting so many new people.” Elisa said drivers were ‘fully supported’ from day one of the six weeks’ paid training. When they’d qualified and were out on the road, there was always someone to ask for help or advice. The film helps launch the bus company’s upcoming recruitment events, two of which are aimed specifically at women, as part of the company’s Women Behind the Wheel campaign. Training Department Co-ordi-
nator Paul Waite said: “Right from the outset, we wanted our drivers to talk about their jobs - rather than getting actors or scripting it - to give it a natural feeling. We made it as honest as possible. “We covered as many possible aspects of a driver’s daily role and chosen a cross-section of drivers that people could relate to.” Elisa summed up the main message behind the film, which is to give bus driving a try: “Go for it! It’s a chance worth taking. I’ve met some of the most incredible people on my journey and I’m only five years in. It’s flown by.” Metrobus’ Managing Director Martin Harris said: “This film gives a real sense of who we are and what it’s like to work here. Our drivers put their hearts and souls into what they do and that’s what we look for when we take people on: that spark and that realisation that we are about much more than getting people from A to B. “Yes, we want people with good driving skills, but they also need to be good communicators and to want to serve our communities.” Martin said the company was particularly keen to employ as diverse a workforce as possible. For example, the company has a target of women making up at least 20% of its colleagues by 2024. You can watch the film here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=F A4K6vrYT1o&feature=youtube To find out more about bus driving careers: https://www.metrobus. co.uk/driver-vacancies/

Billingshurst pub named TEA Drinkers’ Pub of the Year Kings Head locals
The Kings Head in Billingshurst has been named ‘TEA Drinkers’ Pub of the Year 2020’ after receiving the highest number of votes in a competition run by
Surrey brewery Hogs Back during January. The competition was part of Hogs Back’s ‘Support Your Local, Go TEA Total’ campaign, designed
to encourage more people to support their local during January the quietest month of the year for the pub trade. The brewer’s bestselling beer is TEA, or Traditional
English Ale. More than 220 pubs took part in the campaign, displaying ‘Go TEA Total’ posters and beer mats, and encouraging drinkers the other side of the bar to vote for them. More than 130,000 people engaged with the campaign across social media. As well as the TEA Drinkers’ Pub of the Year, the campaign also rewarded pubgoers through a weekly ‘TEA Total Thursday’ competition, giving brewery tours to those who ‘tagged’ the mates they were taking to the pub. As winners, The Kings Head received vouchers for 20 people to take a tour of the Hogs Back Brewery, near Farnham, including a beer tasting, and a certificate for display in the pub. The pub has been owned for the past six years by Oonagh and Colin Ganley, who have stocked Hogs Back TEA from the start. Oonagh said: “We’ve just had our busiest January ever and we’re sure the TEA Total campaign played a part, along with our new manager Paul Sweeney, who started just before Christmas. “Customers were really interested in the campaign, asking us about the posters and beer mats,
and the staff team were determined to win the TEA Drinkers’ Pub of the Year title, so it definitely created a great buzz in the pub. We’ll be looking forward to ‘Go TEA Total’ running again next year, and hoping to retain our title!” Hogs Back managing director Rupert Thompson said: “The idea behind the ‘Support Your Local Go TEA Total’ campaign was to help pubs stay busier during January, so it’s great to hear that the Kings Head had a good month. “We were thrilled with the response to the campaign from pubs and their customers, who clearly engaged with the campaign’s messages about banishing the January blues with a walk to the pub and a sociable pint of TEA. “The Kings Head are worthy winners of the TEA Drinkers’ Pub of the Year title and we look forward to welcoming them to the brewery for their tour.” Image: Staff and customers at the Kings Head including owner Oonagh Ganley (far left) celebrate the pub’s success with Hogs Back Brewery sales director Gordon Thompson (seated second from left)

Yoga with Meg raises over £1,030.00 in an hour for Australian bushfire crisis charity! On Sunday 16 February, local yoga teacher Meg Thompson hosted a special charity yoga class at Millais School to raise vital funds for Australian Bushfire Relief (in conjunction with The Salvation Army). Meg welcomed approximately 85 yoga enthusiasts – of all abilities and ranging in age from five to 70 – for an hour long practice, with donations reaching over £1,031.25 (and counting) for the Australian Bushfire Relief charity. Meg – owner of the Yoga with Meg network, which offers weekly yoga classes in Warnham, Horsham, Worthing and Little-
hampton – has now hosted six yoga fundraisers, with previous charities including Streetlight UK, MIND, Help Refugees, Raleigh International and Ourmala. The Salvation Army’s Emergency Services teams, recovery workers and financial counsellors have been active at various sites across Australia, assisting thousands of people every day. The organisation recognises that there is no ‘quick fix’ after a devastating disaster – it can take a long time for communities to recover – so support includes financial assistance, emotional support and referrals.
Meg Thompson, owner of Yoga with Meg, commented: “Although our media is awash with ‘new’ news stories, Australia is still in turmoil. Even though heavy rains have extinguished the bulk of the fires, huge relief efforts are still needed to address the colossal damage. “It’s just tragic to think about the impact of the rampant fires on people, animals, homes and habitats. The fires are believed to have claimed at least 33 lives and researchers estimate that over a billion animals have now perished, with some species being at risk of extinction. Thousands of

homes have been destroyed and an area the size of England – more than 11 million hectares – has been damaged. This is life-changing stuff – it will take a long time for Australia to recover. “I chose the Salvation Army’s Australian Bushfire Relief as their teams are providing ongoing support – whether that’s immediate relief for firefighters, emergency workers and evacuees with meals, bedding and care packs, or longer-term with cash grants and emotional support. “With a week to go before the class, our booking app was showing that we had nearly 100 attendees and I was so pleased that we had nearly a full house of dedicated yogis on the day – especially after Storm Dennis! Perhaps the easiest and cheapest way to give your patio a quick makeover is to use seasonal bedding plants to provide some instant colour. Whether you go for pansies or old-fashioned begonias, robust geraniums with their distinctive scent or sweet busy Lizzies you can get an easy pop of colour with a good selection of plants and pots. Small trees, shrubs and just about any other plant can be grown in pots on a patio. Where space is really tight, underplant larger specimens with lowgrowing plants to really make the most of every available centimetre. For instance, trailing nasturtiums, herbs or fastgrowing leafy salads look great when planted around the base of a containerised standard tree. Don’t forget that you can always go up as well … so take advantage of your vertical space. There are many clever growing kits available that allow you to grow flowers and edibles on walls and fences – which add greenery and texture to your outside space. Embrace the natural style and elements. Cottage gardens have classic appeal and are easy to re-create by using old materi-
als and soft, romantic planting. Rustic, unfinished wood, warm pebbles and lightly distressed brickwork all work together to provide a natural, unfussy aesthetic. A weathered shabby chic bench surrounded by planted up pots will provide a comfortable place to sit and relax. And if your patio is partly shaded then think about plants that are happy in those conditions such as hydrangeas, violas and ferns. The joy about container growing is that you can move plants around so that your garden is a constantly changing canvas and works with the seasons. As spring gets underway, usually by mid-March, the more frequent sunny days provide the opportunity for an increasing range of gardening tasks. It’s time to get busy preparing seed beds, sowing seed, cutting back winter shrubs and generally tidying up around the garden. Jobs for this month as recommended by the RHS should include: Protect new spring shoots from slugs Plant shallots, onions and early potatoes Plant summer flowering bulbs Lift and divide clumps of perennials Top dress containers with fresh compost Mow the lawn on dry days Cut back dogwood and willow grown for winter stems Hoe and mulch weeds to keep them under control early Start feeding fish and using the pond fountain Prune bush and climbing roses

Local business shows support for the Arts in Crawley The Hawth is delighted to announce that Pharian IT Services & Support is now sponsoring the Crawley theatre. The IT consultancy and digital agency, which is based at Worth Corner Business Centre, specialises in providing cost-effective solutions to small and medium sized businesses, and will be supporting the Arts at The Hawth for the next twelve months. Richard Harvey, Managing Director of Pharian Limited said: “I have travelled the world, but Crawley has always felt like home and the right place for my family and my company. We are very tied into the business community in the area - small businesses rely on people in their locality and there is such a wealth of diverse talent in Crawley, we are very lucky to be able to tap into such a major asset. As The Hawth is one of the central hubs for the town, a partnership felt like a great way to reach out to new audiences and give something back to the community at the same time.
Dave Watmore, General Manager at The Hawth, expressed his pleasure: “We are absolutely delighted to welcome Pharian as our sponsors. It’s always great to build relationships with other businesses in Crawley and to work alongside one with a passion for the Arts is even better. We are extremely grateful for the support of Richard and his team and look forward to working with them. To celebrate this new partnership, Pharian are running a competition to win a pair of tickets to the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s Last Night of the Proms at The Hawth on Saturday 13 June. To enter, simply visit pharian.co.uk and click on the blog. Richard Harvey met with The Hawth’s resident Orchestra during one of their regular visits to Crawley. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra were at the theatre on Sunday 16 February to perform one of their ever popular Miniature Recitals and the musicians took time out to welcome the new sponsor on board.

Cert. (PG) Runtime: 98 mins Starring: Jim Carrey, James Marsden, Ben Schwartz Overview: When Sonic opens a portal to our world he’ll face bigger threats than the ones that he’s run from all his life. Based on the legendary SEGA video game, Sonic The Hedgehog
(Ben Schwartz) follows the title character as he faces the wrath of the evil Dr Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Going into the film I was expecting the run of the mill video game movie, but thanks to an intriguing plot and an electric performance from Carrey the film has finally broken the trend of terrible video game adaptations. The film will satisfy long-term Sonic fans but also entertain the whole family, and the performance from Carrey is worth the price of admission alone. I’d highly recommend this film if you’re looking for a fun time at the cinema.

Horsham win again – edging towards safety
Photos by Nicke Evans
Saturday February 15 – Premier – Division 2 East Horsham 1st XI 1-0 Eastbourne Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter At Christ’s Hospital in atrocious conditions last Saturday, much improved Horsham notched up their third win in five games. In the close fought game new overseas player Matt Barnett scored the single deciding goal, Player Coach Andy Blood telling the District Post: “We’re getting
there! We’ve got a few more experienced heads available and it’s great to have Rob Turnbull back. We had a miserable time up to Christmas, scoring just one point and its frustrating that its taken us so long to put in such a good defensive performance as we did against Eastbourne today with our first clean sheet. After taking the lead in earlier matches, we’ve made it hard for ourselves, but there’s been an excellent change in attitude – I think we’ve been a bit too nice up to now! We visit London
Academicals on Saturday and they’re just one place above us: if we can win that then we’ll be only 2 points adrift, which would be a remarkable recovery.” Horsham Captain Sam Macdonald added: “We’ve had a couple of close games that could have gone either way, against Lewes for example, and we’ve had games that we really could have won. In the second half today, we had all the possession and earned six shorts - our players are getting used to the speed of the game at this level
now. Matt Barnett’s arrival has lifted us, he’s played for Canada Under 21s and at a decent level in Australia, too. Now that we’re giving a better account of ourselves we’re more confident and we need to make sure that we beat London Accies on Saturday, they’re struggling and so are Sevenoaks, who we’ve still got to play – they’ve had players leaving. So, it is do-able for us to stay up, and that would be a fantastic achievement from where we were!”
Horsham defy the elements to win well in Essex Saturday February 15 – Investec Women’s League – Conference East Chelmsford 0-1 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter With the opposition reluctant to call the game off, despite the encroaching fury of Storm Dennis – rather understatedly saying: “The pitches are fine and the roads are fine”, however, in deference to the weather forecasts advising caution, they did add: “It is a bit damp and breezy, with more rain to come …” So, Horsham Ladies embarked on the 120 round trip for a late pushback at Chelmer Park to take on 7th-placed Chelmsford, one spot below Horsham in the table. And, the Ladies were rewarded with a win, completing a double over their Essex rivals. Parity was maintained up to the interval, until, towards the end of the second half, Rosie Firth scored the decisive field goal resulting from a great build up by the forwards. Horsham Ladies Club Captain, Charlotte “CJ” White told the District Post: “This was an excellent win for us - in the terrible, wet and windy conditions we played some lovely hockey with great teamwork. It was really good to come away with three points, helping us to get closer to pushing up the league table. We’ve got Broxbourne at Christ’s Hospital on Saturday (2pm start) – we beat them 2-1 in Hertfordshire in November, so we’re hoping to do the double against them, too. We had a nasty journey home from Essex, but it was well worth it!”

Blistering first half rushes Horsham through to Velocity QF Wednesday February 12 – Velocity Trophy Knockout Stage 2 Horsham 5-0 Burgess Hill Town Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter
Saturday February 15 Football & Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter “Every storm runs out of rain ……” – except last Saturday, when local sports fixtures took a bashing, including Horsham Football Club’s trip to Leatherhead, which, in mid morning appeared to be proceeding. Horsham Rugby Club’s game would have survived had it been a home game on their artificial grass surface, but the visit to Camberley was postponed. And, despite the exceptional draining qualities of their pitch at their new Countryside Stadium, Broadbridge Heath’s game against Steyning Town also fell foul of the exceptionally wet weather delivered by Storm Dennis, coming on top of the Storm Ciara deluges the previous weekend. Details of rearranged games
will be released in due course, meanwhile next Saturday Horsham Football and Horsham Rugby clubs both have home fixtures – at the Camping World Stadium HFC will welcome 18th placed Cheshunt, whom they beat 1-0 in Hertfordshire early season – while, at their Hammerpond Road ground, the Rugby Club will play 6th in the table Belsize Park, one spot above, to whom they lost in London three months ago. Broadbridge Heath FC has a tough away trip to promotion chasing Peacehaven and Telscombe. A storm is named when it has the potential to warrant an amber ‘be prepared’ or red ‘action’ warning. Our next big wet weather event will be named Storm Ellen and instructions have been submitted to the weather gods to ensure that it will be a short, sharp, midweek overnight affair not interfering with local sports fixtures.
Exciting new signing for Horsham Hornets BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of 21 year old attacking midfielder Alex Clark from recent opponents East Thurrock United. Forms were signed prior to the Velocity Trophy win against Burgess Hill Town. Alex began his career at Southend United
– The Shrimpers - for whom he appeared at both Under 18 and Under 23 level, before playing non-league football following his release from the Roots Hall club. After brief spells at two other Essex clubs - Harlow Town and Heybridge Swifts - Alex joined Three Bridges, for whom he scored on debut and went on to play 20 times, before transferring to East Thurrock at the start of this season, where he has featured regularly.
After beating Whyteleafe in the previous round almost two months previously, Horsham overcame old rivals Burgess Hill Town – from the Isthmian League SE Division - relatively easily at the Camping World Stadium in their biggest win thus far at the new ground. However, the opening skirmishes belonged to Burgess Hill, whose Andrew Briggs twice had shots blocked, but it was a short-lived worry, Lee Harding breaking away, first firing straight at Hillians’ keeper Fynn Talley and then earning a corner, from which Dylan Merchant was well off target. But, a second corner was headed on to Hornets’ skipper Jack Brivio to give Horsham an early lead. Three more corners followed, culminated in an excellent aerial header by birthday boy Merchant doubling Horsham’s advantage. Horsham promptly thought they had scored again, only for the goal to be disallowed, despite some supporters believing that it was an own goal, and should therefore have stood. The visitors responded, Alex Kelly quelling an attack, before Merchant kicked clear. Between two further Horsham corners Chris Smith scored a superb opportunist goal when he spotted Tally well out of position and launched a volley from the half way line, the forlorn keeper scrambling back to no effect. Lea Dawson’s Horsham header came and went before Horsham’s eighth corner was punched clear. Burgess Hill were looking wide open at the back – as suggested by the 52 league goals conceded this season, among the highest number in their league. In yet another Horsham attack, Brivio’s solo run was somehow averted, only for Harvey Sparks to return the ball to Brivio to unleash a pile-driver to put Horsham four up, just ahead of the break. There was still time for Burgess Hill to have the opportunity to claw back a goal, but their corner was headed wide. The second half began with Hornets’ sub Charlie Harris free kicking over the top left of the goal, a Burgess Hill long range attempt being similarly aerial. Rob O’Toole, another Horsham substitution, then put the icing on the cake, scoring on the rebound against his former club. George Bentley had to run out from the Horsham goal to thwart potential danger, but while he subsequently needed to dive full length to keep out Max Miller’s shot, Horsham were creating smiles among their happy supporters, heavy rain not dampening the spirits. An inventive back heel from Man of the Match Smith was saved before his opposite number went just wide. Burgess’ Mason Doughty got in a shot, but straight to Bentley, before shooting well wide after a wasted corner. Jordi
Photos by John Lines
Ndozid then sent over a cross but none of his teammates could connect, the ball returning to the other end for an unrewarded Horsham corner. Although the result had long since been decided, Burgess kept going, and were unlucky not to score when their rocket crashed on to the underside of the bar and out to safety. Another Horsham foray was parried away, until, at the death Doughty headed over a visitor’s corner. Burgess Hill had a much better second half – and they bounced back to beat Three Bridges 4-2 on the following Saturday – but
they were left with far too much to do after Horsham’s rampant fourgoal first half. Horsham will be looking for revenge when Margate come to the Camping World Stadium for the Velocity Quarter Final on Tuesday (25th). The east Kent side, 13th in the table, has successfully visited the town twice already this season – in November they beat Horsham 0-3 in the league, having previously knocked Horsham YMCA out of the FA Cup by two goals to one in September.

Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter
YMCA fight back to take a point from high flying Lancing Saturday February 15 Southern Combination Football League: Premier Division Lancing 1-1 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter After two successive defeats, including a reverse against lowly Hassocks, Horsham YMCA faced the daunting prospect of a visit to top of the table Lancing with the leaders being accustomed to playing on their artificial pitch. And, as if to highlight YM’s problems with consistency, they again proved that they are more than capable of giving a good account of themselves against more successful opposition, although they have sometimes had difficulty against teams that they might have been expected to beat. While the anticipated full force of Storm Dennis did not materialise during the game, the wet and windy conditions were uncomfortable, but the teams had played in worse. Lancing took an early lead when keeper Aaron Jeal was dispossessed and Ben Connolly finished impressively by
firing the ball into the empty net from a tight angle. With Lancing using the ball well, YM were struggling to make an impact, but although both sides did create chances the defences kept the score to 1-0 at the break. In the much more even second half YM performed more strongly, introducing greater opportunities and, while they rode their luck at times, they did well to contain Lancing and were rewarded with a deserved point when Dan Evans crossed from the left for Matt Daniel to head the ball downwards and back up into the goal just before the end. On Saturday, in another tough game, mid table YM welcome current runner up Newhaven to Gorings Mead, whom they beat 3-2 at the Trafalgar Ground in the corresponding away fixture. While, in a top versus bottom affair, Lancing play Loxwood, who are marooned in the basement nine points behind Hassocks. Horsham’s development squad was blown away by a strong first half performance from Storm Langney, whistling in
from Eastbourne in the third running of the Under 23 Challenge Cup – on a cold night at Sussex FA’s Lancing HQ. Langney began as they meant to proceed, maximising possession, earning corners and creating chances, making Horsham keeper Lewis Blaney busy. After scoring in the Semi Final against Newhaven, midfielder Macaulay Gray opened Langney’s account with a distant rocket, flicking Blaney’s finger tips on the way in. Then, on the half hour mark, Horsham were unfortunate to concede a penalty, the ball accidently making contact with defender Joel Mann’s hand, frequent first teamer Peter Gordon nonchalantly putting Langney two up from the spot. Horsham’s frustration boiled over, with striker Archie Goddard and Langney’s Dom Welsh being sanctioned. Worse followed when, just before the interval, the onrushing Peter Cooper got past Mann to pile in his second, Horsham seldom troubling Connor Saunders in the East Sussex team’s goal.
Three down, but with a changed line up, Horsham came more into their own in the second half from both long range and close quarters - Matieus Mulugeta unleashing a blast and Harry Law attempting with a header. Other opportunities were presented, but Saunders and his defence were up to the task. And, when, after fluffing an earlier chance, sub Mohammad Mekawir scored Langney’s fourth goal just before the end, Horsham’s game was well and truly up, there having long since been little doubt about the outcome against strong opponents with much greater first team experience. Although, Langney have not impressed in the league, their cup form has been outstanding with 14 unanswered goals in four games. Horsham Manager Mark Hawthorne said: “We had spells in the game where we kept the ball quite well in midfield, but too many errors early in the match took the game away from us. We learn from this and move on.”

Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter After a superb run of six successive Cup Final triumphs, Horsham Rugby Club’s tenure of the Bob Rogers Cup finally came to an end at Hove. Following promotion to London 1 South, Horsham first team is no longer eligible to play in the competition, the mantle
being picked up by the Lions – Horsham second XV, current leaders of the Surrey County League Championship. In the final the Lions came up against Hove’s strong first XV side, mid table in the competitive London 2 SE league, and no strangers to Sussex cup finals. However, after going in to the interval with a significant deficit, Horsham Lions fought back well, out-scoring Hove in the second half and threatening to take the game into extra time. Oli Chennell got Horsham onto
the score sheet with a first half penalty, but Hove led 17-3 at the break. The second half was a different story, debutant Elliott Powell and Emmett O’Rahilly both scoring tries converted by Chennell. Horsham were dominating in the closing stages and threatening to push the game into extra time, but, following a try from Hove, they had a little too much to do, but left with heads held high after the good team showing against higher level opposition.
