Horsham woman re-arrested in Crawley murder inquiry Firm wants to build 3,000 homes near Horsham
phil dennett News Editor
A 24-year-old Horsham woman questioned about the suspected murder of a young father has been bailed until November after being re-arrested. The woman is one of four people interviewed about the tragic death of Sam Caulfield, 20, who died after being stabbed at Spencers Road in West Green, Crawley. He died soon afterwards in hospital. Two men and two women were initially arrested after Sussex Police launched a murder investigation into Mr Caulfield’s death, and had been expected to answer their bail next Tuesday. Police confirmed to the District Post this week that a man of 20 from Cambridge, a woman of 24 from Horsham, a woman of 23 from Crawley and a man of 20 also from Crawley, had been arrested on Thursday of last week on suspicion of murder, perverting the course of justice and possession of a Class A drug. The four have been bailed until November 17 while detectives continue their investigations into the incident in June. None of their names have been made public. Mr Caulfield, from Mayfield, vol-
unteered for the Band of Brothers charity at Crawley that helps young men turn away from a life of crime and at the time of his shock death was described as much loved and respected. He had a young daughter and girlfriend, and his funeral

was held at Woodvale Crematorium in Brighton. A poem written by his girlfriend was read out at the service, including the lines: “You had a family who loved you so, a baby girl so beautiful and pure.”
Home hunters could have nearly 3,000 new properties on the market near Horsham under a scheme going before councillors. And about 900 of the houses are expected to lower-priced homes, known in planning circles as “affordable”. Liberty Property Trust is asking for approval for 2, 750 homes, a third of which will be offered as “affordable” houses. The firm’s planning application is not expected to go before councillors on Horsham District Council for consideration before early next year, because of size. Liberty is also asking in the same plan for a business park under what is known as “mixed use development.” It would appear to have a good chance of success in planning policy terms, because the site is one allocated in the council’s local plan, Horsham District Planning Framework, to help achieve the target set by the Government for the district of building 800 homes per year over a
twenty year period, along with a requirement for more economic development. The Local Plan was approved by a government inspector in September 2015. It was then adopted by Horsham District Council in November 2015. This week the shortage of homes and the struggle of young people to afford them was highlighted nationally. Liberty plans a new business park of 46,000 square metres to boost economic development by bringing in new companies and jobs, two primary schools, land and financial contributions towards a new secondary school, a multi-use community centre, health facilities, shops, allotments, provision of public open space for informal relaxation and play, provision of formal sports and recreational facilities across all age groups, landscaping and related services. Liberty’s scheme is said to meet housing needs for people looking to rent or buy. Continued on pg 6.

More than 70 drivers have been banned after being caught by police in a summer crackdown. Among them is Jason Murray, 27, a builder, of Lower Faircox, Henfield. He was arrested in High Street, Henfield, on June 17, and charged with driving with 55mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system, possession of MDMA and driving with no insurance. Mr Murray pleaded guilty at Worthing Magistrates’ Court on July19 and was disqualified from driving for 36 months. He was also ordered to carry out 50 hours of unpaid work in the next 12 months, and pay a £85 fine and a £85 victim surcharge.Police, who had given advance warning of the blitz, code-named Operation Dragonfly, released details of cases of drink and drug-driving related offences as a deterrent to other drivers. They included several tradesmen, a teacher, a chef, a publican and an engineer, with ages ranging from 23 to 82. One man, who had other driving offences, was hailed for four weeks and banned for 40 months, and the longest ban was for four years. Many of the cases involved drivers who needed transport for work. One of the most serious cases highlighted by police was a student caught speeding on the A23 in excess of 120mph while almost twice the drink-drive limit. A report said that at about 1pm
on June 30, officers on patrol in an unmarked vehicle became aware of a silver Volkswagen Golf travelling at speed on the A23 southbound near Albourne. They pursued the vehicle and signalled for it to pull over in a layby just past the junction of the A2300. The driver, Anderson Bell, was arrested and taken into custody at Brighton Police Station, where he was subsequently charged with driving with 68mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system and speeding. The legal drink-drive limit is 35mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath. The 25-year-old, of Western Road, Brighton, pleaded guilty at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on July 14 and was disqualified from driving for 18 months. He was also ordered to pay a £240 fine, £85 costs and a £85 victim surcharge. For Robert Cox, 18, success in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme helped him in a career search. Robert, from Southwater, joined other youngsters in collecting their awards. He said: “I learnt about team work and leadership which helped me get a job at John Lewis. There was a group interview which I passed, as I had confidence to give my opinions and have more authority than the other candidates. Doing the awards feels like a massive achievement, which I’m really proud of.” Other young adults also told how new confidence built through the scheme helped them to overcome challenges in their lives. This year’s recipients of the Gold Awards included a 19-yearold girl with learning difficulties who achieved all three awards Bronze, Silver and Gold. Charlotte Hatche said: “I feel really happy and proud of my achievement. I got really homesick but persevered and got through. “With the confidence I built, I will work with other young people with special educational needs and disabilities to understand how they can get involved and benefit from the awards.” This year 85 young people in West Sussex achieved Gold

Carfax in pole position for world record attempt
Dads band is class act A band of dads was music to the ears of school fund raisers. Five of the parents performed during Leechpool Primary School’s first outdoor music festival at the Horsham school, which was called LeechFest. The governors of Leechpool Primary School and LEAF are raising money for a new music and drama area in a long-term project. The Chairman of Horsham District Council, Cllr Christian Mitchell, who opened the festival, said:
“The festival was all about raising money for a new dedicated music room for pupils and the wider community. “This was an amazing event to celebrate the pupils, teachers and parent’s talents. The music was fantastic and the house band 5D who are five dads with children at the school were a class act. “The event was a real showcase for the inspirational leadership from the head teacher Nicola Davenport and her staff and governors.”

Horsham town centre will be the venue for a group of West Sussex trainee firefighters attempting a new world record next Friday. They take on a charity ladder climb and pole drop on August 12 at 2pm in the Carfax , when they hope to take the record from colleagues across the border in East Sussex. The 12 recruits, who began an intensive 14-week training course to become full-time community firefighters in May, will be aiming to climb and slide more than 7,000 metres in only one hour. If they succeed they will beat a record set by a team of East Sussex firefighters earlier this year. The challenge is set to begin at 2pm and is being staged to raise thousands of pounds for The Fire Fighters Charity, the Golden Lion Children’s Trust and the Keep Connor Active appeal. Crawley firefighter Lee Burridge, who is organising the charity challenge, said: “There is a longstanding tradition of trainee firefighters raising money for charity to mark their commitment to a career serving their community. Our new recruits are very keen to continue this tradition. “We now need the public to get behind this challenge and help our trainee firefighters raise as much money as possible for three great causes. If you are in Horsham on the day, please come along to the Carfax and cheer them on!” Training Delivery Manager for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service Keith Parvin said: “Community engagement is such an important part of a firefighter’s role in West Sussex. As well as raising money for charity, the event will be an excellent opportunity for our trainees to get their first taste of engaging with the public.” If you would like to support the
recruits and their fundraising efforts you can do so by donating via https://crowdfunding.justgiving.

A summer fun day raised more than £8,000 to help improve school facilities. Billingshurst Primary School’s sixth annual Summer Fun Day was a great boost before the holidays started. In a summer of top level sport, from football in France to the
Olympics in Rio, it hosted its own hotly contested sporting activities throughout the day and helped to raise more than £8,000 for the school. Thanks to a packed programme of activities, the event remains the school’s biggest fundraising event, with staff, pupils and families working alongside local businesses to ensure the day is a success. Whilst the usual fun day favourites continued to draw the crowds, from face painting to the BBQ, the Deputy/Head Teacher Bungee Run Challenge was one of the highlights of the day with Serena Nicholls, the Deputy Head, retaining her ‘gold medal’ position for the third year in a row. Teachers from Year 2 added their own chapter to the European championship, with Greece taking on Spain on the Bungee course. The “welly wanging” competition produced some outstanding results, highlighting some potential Olympians in the making; the winning throw from Key Stage 1 reached10.95m, with 16.08m from Key Stage 2, and a massive throw of 25.95m from the adult competition. The school choir and country dancers entertained visitors in the display ring. Head teacher Helen Williamson said: ““We are very proud of the tradition of this fundraising event. Staff, pupils and parents all help in the lead-up and on the day which means everyone shares a real sense of pride in the outcome. Every penny raised goes back to the school, and this event in particular has enabled us to buy new outdoor equipment and fund the construction of a new outdoor classroom. Huge thanks go to our local business sponsors who continue to support us.” Pictured are scenes from the day.

Students reach for the sky Horsham is the cream The winners
Collyer’s Media and Film studies students attended a full training day at Sky TV Studios in Isleworth, West London . A key focus of the day was on careers and students quizzed Sky journalist Harriet Hadfield and presenter and all round boxing personality Spencer Fearon about their media careers and how they got started in their line of work. Students were given IPads and a series of business tasks to perform. In teams, they generated ideas and pitched those ideas back to Sky’s professional programme makers. They also toured the studios, saw the inner workings of Sky Sports and un-
dertook business challenges. Subject Leader for MediaJonathan Nunns said: “Our wonderful students did Collyer’s and Horsham proud. They projected themselves as charismatic, ambitious and creative – I’m so proud of them. We are massively grateful to Sky for this wonderful opportunity.” Activities throughout a packed day included costing and scheduling Sky entertainment content for a holiday weekend and producing an advertising and sponsorships plan for Sky Sports. At the end of the process the teams pitched their ideas to the Sky tutors running the

event. Assistant Principal Melanie Russell was thrilled: “Big thanks to our very own Jonathan Nunns and the Media and Film Studies teachers for their hard work and support. We are lucky to have a team of such talented teachers and technicians. These students performed exceptionally well at Sky and many have very bright futures ahead of them in the creative arts industry.” Collyer’s Senior Tutor responsible for the Progression Directorate Ian McAlister, said: “It’s been a busy year of ‘Planning Your Future’ activities and this is another great careers event which is really helping our students to shape their futures. The Media and Film team is excellent.” Jonathan Nunns added: “Sky’s training team were clearly very impressed with the quality of logical thinking, organisation, and creativity of the Collyer’s students. The students were also given the opportunity to apply to Sky for work experience with a view to future apprenticeships, which is just fantastic.” Pictured are students on the trip.
Horsham people with a sweet tooth played their part in a UK cream tea charity treat. More than 100 people in the town responded to the offer of cream teas in a box delivery for the Horsham-based national childrens’s charity Action Medical Research that raised about £55,000 nationally. Altogether 9,800 teas were delivered. While Horsham fans ate theirs at home, more unusual spots included on a punt on the River Cam, in a tent and on top of a lighthouse. David Graham, the charity’s Head of Events Fundraising, said: “This is the third year we’ve run our cream teas delivery and it’s just gone from strength to strength. We’re delighted that so many peo-
ple were keen to put on the kettle and make time for tea for tiny lives. “Medical research for children is underfunded in the UK. For every project Action funds there’s another one we have to turn away – simply because of a lack of funds which is why this fundraising means so much to us. “It’s not easy to get almost 9,800 boxes ready for delivery in one day so we’re very grateful to our army of volunteers who packed our cream teas as well as to everyone who enjoyed them! The delivery included 19,558 scones, 9,779 Yorkshire teabags, 391kg of Rodda’s Cornish Clotted Cream and almost 509kg of Tiptree strawberry jam to give supporters everything they needed for the perfect afternoon pick-me-up.

Support officers new role under way Helping the community
Support police officers have started their new role with enhanced powers and skills. With the new advantages to deal with a wide range of local problems, the Police Community Support Officers can act to resolve issues such as alcohol fuelled antisocial behaviour. Assistant Chief Constable of Sussex Police Laurence Taylor said: “The PCSO role has evolved since it was introduced 13 years ago with the specific aim to be visible in the community; and they will continue to conduct patrols. However these patrols will be targeted to areas
where they know they can make a difference. “They will be helping prevent crimes such as burglary and antisocial behaviour and complete tasks in ways that are proven to reduce crime and keep people safe.” They will be an integral part of larger teams solving local problems, carrying out basic investigations, working alongside partners and directly with witnesses and victims to respond to community issues. Making use of mobile technology, PCSOs will access information whilst out in the community. The flexible nature of their new
role means they can work when and where they are needed, logging on remotely, as well as working from police and shared premises. ACC Taylor said: “Accessibility is important to me. “It’s important that communities can speak to their PCSOs and police officers when they need them or if they have information to pass on. Now they will have a team to access rather than one individual. Every area within Sussex will have a team to contact – by phone, email or via the web. “Should there be a need, supervisory officers will have autonomy to move PCSOs to the places where they are needed most. These are in addition to our 999 response and investigations teams. This means all areas in Sussex will have access to a full range of force, regional and national policing services. “Whilst our newly recruited PCSOs complete their training, teams will be supported by constables within local teams and, in some areas, new police constables who will be out training in the community.” ACC Taylor added: “The new role of the PCSO has been specifically developed in line with changing demands in policing and reshaping our service to make it as effective as possible to meet the needs of the local community. “Sussex Police faces the challenge of operating with new demands against a shrinking budget,
however, the force is determined to make policing services more effective, rather than less so. “PCSOs, who are supported by constables with enforcement capabilities, are one of a number of layers of policing that work to prevent, respond to and investigate crime. “The new policing model for Sussex is focused on protecting vulnerable people and catching criminals. We will always be there when people need us.” Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner, Katy Bourne said: “Like most Sussex residents I highly value the work and importance of PCSOs and their contribution to the local policing teams. “However, community policing in Sussex has remained unchanged for more than a decade, and coupled with the changing nature of crime, a different policing response is required along with new methods of investigation and forensic analysis. This is why I support all officers, including PCSOs, being trained and equipped with the necessary skills to continue to keep our communities safe. “As PCC I will continue to scrutinise Sussex Police and represent the public’s views, to ensure that the Chief Constable’s new local policing model maintains public confidence and reassurance, whilst delivering an effective and efficient police service.”

New Homes continued Continued from front page The homes would include a broad mix of housing types and range from one-bedroom apartments to five-bedroom houses. Liberty hopes the scheme will bring about 4,000 jobs. The firm will pay towards the new secondary school. The application includes provision for landscape and ecological enhancements as well as new roads and transport facilities along with details of how the site will be accessed. The district council said: “Over the coming months the council’s planning officers will carefully consider the content of the application to ensure the proposals accord with the policies and aims of the Horsham District Planning Framework. It will then be brought before the council’s planning committee for the area – most likely in early 2017.” Full details of the application (reference number DC/16/1677) can be viewed on the council’s website via the Public Access system: https:// public-access.horsham.gov. uk/public- access.

Paul Sweeney, Head of the school’s Elgar House, together with some of his colleagues, agreed to go into the stocks and let students from the whole school pay to throw wet sponges at them to raise funds for the hospice. Jo Smith, Community Fundraiser for the hospice, said: “Thank you to everyone who took part and for supporting Chestnut Tree House. As well as being a great practise run for the Loxwood Joust, it was huge fun and very heart-warming to see the
teachers, children and young people getting involved – and very wet - to help other local children who are not so blessed with good health.” Paul Sweeney said: “It was great to have Jo from Chestnut Tree House in school with the stocks from the Loxwood Joust, students thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to soak their teachers whilst raising money for Chestnut Tree House” The school has been a supporter of Chestnut Tree House for many years, taking part in the charity’s annual Reindeer Run campaign as well as other fundraising activities. To date it has raised more than £10,000. The Loxwood Joust takes place at Loxwood Meadow, and Chestnut Tree House will be at the event with volunteers in the stocks raising much-needed funds. Tricky access ruling by councillors Residents with tricky access for refuse collectors will have to find an alternative site for bins. They are being told that they can either use a new kerbside location or improve the access. Horsham District Council says it is taking the measure for a number reasons including safety. The council’s cabinet has approved a proposal to revise waste and recycling collection points from the district’s properties which are accessed by poorly maintained driveways, unmade tracks or have secure property entrance systems. Attraction opens for extra day Firms can help One of the most charming and historic attractions in West Sussex will open for an extra day each week. St Mary’s House at Bramber will now open on Wednesday afternoons, as well as the regular Sunday and Thursday afternoon. Visitors to St Mary’s are warmly welcomed to this lived-in home by Peter Thorogood, Roger Linton, and their small army of about 60 dedicated volunteers. They all enjoy sharing their love of the house, which contains a number of collections including handmade dolls showing English monarchs down the ages, Royal Jubilees memorabilia and other collections.

People like Andy Spriggs will appreciate a little help as a charity appeals for businesses in the Horsham area to back his charity. Andy spoke about his life-limiting disease as firms were invited to support a fashion show for the West Sussex North Branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association. The charity is staging the show later this year to raise funds to support local people living with the progressive neurological disease and to promote awareness of its debilitating effects on individuals and their families. Unfortunately Andy is all too well aware of the physical and emotional challenges the incurable disease brings. He said: “It affects the brain and spinal cord, attacking the nerves that control movement as well as speech, swallowing and breathing. Stephen Hawking’s story is very inspiring but the harsh truth is that more than half of people with MND die less than two years after they’re diagnosed and, younger people, often with young families can also be affected. I am extremely grateful for the fantastic work that our local branch does for those living with the disease and their families.”
Clothes for the show are being supplied by Jo Dennis of Jo Jo Boutique in Cuckfield. In the run- up to the event, the branch committee is seeking support from other local businesses to help maximise the funds raised. Branch vice-chair Chris Sheridan said: “We think this is a great opportunity for local companies to associate themselves with a charity which has come very much to the fore in the past two years after the Ice Bucket Challenge and the Oscar-winning film The Theory of Everything about the impact of motor neurone disease (MND) on the life of Professor Stephen Hawking. “In particular, we are looking for companies who might help us with drinks, raffle prizes, background music and stylist/beauticians for the five models.” “It’s crucial that people have a better understanding of the reality of what an MND diagnosis means. The show is being held at the Queens Hall in Cuckfield on October 20. Tickets, priced at £10 including a welcome drink and canapés, can be obtained by emailing julie@mndwestsussexnorth.com or from Jo at the Jo Jo Boutique.

Top tips for starting senior school Science new to many pupils
of having one or two teachers, they will have lots of new ones. It will be a steep learning curve! ‘Fitting in’ for them will be the priority. When a situation arises and they ask for advice, don’t tell them what to do, talk through what they might do. Give them ownership of the solution to the problem. It’s about respect and recognising that they want to become more self-reliant. Your job is to be the safety net when they fall! Wave them off in the morning with the confidence that all will be ok. Do not be the parent who ventures into the locker room to help them get their books ready for the morning lessons!
At the beginning your child will come home exhausted. You will ask them “What have you done today?” and they will most likely say “Nothing”! It will take time for them to adjust to their new surroundings and settle in. They will not understand everything straight away and new routines will have to become established. Don’t be alarmed, this is perfectly normal. Your child will have homework, possibly for the first time. Homework is an essential part of their education and will help them to establish independent study skills. Encourage them to take assignments seriously by ensuring that they have both adequate time for completion and they are able to work without distractions. Take an interest, but don’t do it for them – they need to take the responsibility for it! Encourage your child to make new friends. They may have gone to their Senior School with already-established friends, but it is healthy for them to expand their social circle. A good way for them to make new friends is by taking advantage of the many extracurricular activities on offer. Don’t worry if they join everything at the beginning, they will soon discover what their priorities are and achieve a sensible balance. Lastly, encourage your child to relax and be positive. With caring support you can help to make the transition a happy one.”

Parents who children face the often daunting move from primary to secondary school after the summer holidays are being offered advice by the headmistress of a Horsham school. Louise Higson of Farlington School, said: “Moving to Senior School can be a time of mixed emotions, for both you and your child; everything will be different. They will no longer be ‘a big fish in a little pond’, they will be one of the younger ones working their way up in a much bigger environment. They will be surrounded by many new faces and will have to learn to stand on their own two feet and become more independent. Instead

Looking forward to Africa
Next February will be an exciting time for five Horsham students.
Isaac Hayden, Robbie Anand, Sean Thomson, Crispin Leung and
Tom Walker are fund raising for a 10-day charity mission to the Gambia during that winter month. They are continuing a long tradition because for nearly 20 years boys from the Peele boarding house at Christ’s Hospital school at Horsham have been involved with fundraising for the Pageant charity, which is a small UK-based charity supporting pupils, schools and other educational establishment in the Gambia. During their trip the boys will be working alongside the charity in the Gambian schools as well as visiting the two children who their boarding house is currently sponsoring. The boys are aiming to raise £3900 before February, and since the start of the year their efforts have raised more than £2000 towards their target.
Yoga Garden comes to Horsham
The Yoga Garden has re-sited its yoga yurt to the outskirts of Horsham from Storrington. Nestled in a beautiful, wildflower meadow of Knepp Wildland, organisers say The Yurt has truly found its rightful place in this secluded haven of natural beauty. They say that surrounded by rolling grassland, birdsong and a rich variety of wildlife, visitors cannot fail to be inspired and restored. Knepp Wildland is a 3,500 acre rewilding project, the largest of its kind in lowland UK. Using freeroaming grazing animals it aims to re-establish natural processes – very different to traditional conservation - where nature takes the driving seat, thereby increasing biodiversity and natural resilience to influences such as climate change. The Yoga Garden was set up by Nina Fowkes as a place for the

practice of yoga and fitness, which was deeply connected to nature and its ability to heal. She wanted to provide an alternative to noisy gyms and crowded sports centres. The studio Nina has created is a hand-crafted Mongolian style yurt whose organic, breathing structure offers a light, airy space to do just that. Warm and cosy in winter, cool and open in summer, it is fully-equipped with ethicallysourced, organic mats, bolsters and blankets. Nina said: “The real healing of yoga happens through union with yourself and others. The community of The Yoga Garden supports this process to perfection. Even if a client leaves a class having not spoken to anyone, they sense the connection with others and nature very deeply and this is what we are all seeking”.

College students from Horsham celebrated with a skeleton after again setting a record for their knowledge of biology in a national contest. Beating off stiff competition from thousands of contestants across the UK, pupils from Collyer’s enjoyed a record year at the annual British Biology Olympiad 2016. They won two gold, five silver and six bronze medals. In addition, 18 Collyer’s students received Society of Biology ‘Commendations’, with 10 of those being ‘Highly Commended’. Dr Mike Price, Subject Leader for Biology at Collyer’s said: “Wow. For the second year running we have achieved a record year. The computer based competition was incredibly demanding and really tested in-depth biological knowledge at the highest level. Our students responded superbly.” The roll of honour included Andrew Stuckey and Finn Charlton with gold; Connor Hicks, Jemima Smallwood, James Monaghan, Sanmay Kanumakala and Helen Chen with silver and Natasha Rogers, Tara Rawson, Rachel Bowld, Daniel Griffin, Ryan Jones and
Sinead Lawson with Bronze. Dr Price added: “I’m thrilled and incredibly proud that they can now rightly be recognised amongst the best in the country. This is all fantastically useful for UCAS applications to some of the most prestigious universities and courses. Well done to them all.” Jemima Smallwood, who previously attended Tanbridge House School, received a silver medal. She said: “I’m very pleased and it was an honour to attend the Royal Society Awards. Sanmay Kanumakala, who previously attended Warden Park School in Cuckfield also achieved silver, said: “It’s pretty cool to receive this prize. I wasn’t expecting it as I guessed some of the answers, but it all turned out ok.” Molly Moss, Jennifer Inglis-Taylor, Laura Bryant, Angharad Moore; Bethan Davies, Abby Campbell, Emily Hayes, Chloe Baker and Alannah Marchewka were ‘Highly Commended’. Ellie Clarke, Florence Trevelyan, Sean Hutchinson, Rohan McGuinness; Nanoko Forrest, Katharine Evans, Thalia Ballinger,
John Drew and Aiden Thompson all received ‘Commendations’. Dr Price added: “We’ve raised the bar high, but looking at the next generation coming through, along with our current enthusiastic first years, I’m confident that we can achieve even greater success!” Collyer’s Principal Sally Bromley, who presented the students with their awards, said: “Congratulations to Dr Mike Price and these outstanding students for representing Collyer’s so brilliantly. To be able to compete at this level on the national stage is fantastic. We are extremely proud of them all.”

Believe and you can do it, says boss Self belief is the secret of success, students were told during their big night. Businessman Huw Jones told Weald School, Billingshurst, pupils at their “Gold Awards” prize giving ceremony: “You really can achieve whatever you want in this life, the secret is to believe in yourself” About 700 students, proud parents and guests from the community gathered to celebrate another outstanding year. The annual event recognises exceptional successes for effort,
progress and wider contribution to the school. Mr Jones is the founder and Executive Director of the telemedicine company, The Virtual Doctors, based in Shoreham and he told students how The Virtual Doctors combines medicine and technology to create sophisticated, easy to use technology that allows rural health workers in Africa to communicate with doctors anywhere in the world for diagnosis and treatment advice, helping to save live

eYoung visitors saw the history of 400 years of stagecraft. The group from Horsham took in an exhibition while visiting the British Library in London. English teachers Karen Morris and Martin Nichols accompanied the Collyer’s students on the trip,
where the group from the college enjoyed a fascinating talk and tour of a landmark exhibition of Shakespeare performances to celebrate 400 years of stagecraft. Karen said: “It was a superb day and I can’t tell you how proud we were of our inquisitive stu-
dents. Each and every one of them conducted themselves brilliantly during a packed itinerary.”The students and staff also took time to independently explore the spellbinding Treasures Gallery and captivating Punk exhibition.

Anything but a “PLOD” as Steyning team takes honours A Steyning team achieved honours as more than 200 people took part in an overnight endurance challenge on the South Downs Way. The efforts of ALC Health and other competitors helped to raise £48,000 for children’s charity Action Medical Research . The South Downs Way “PLOD” was anything but, as it began before midnight with teams of walkers tackling a 40-mile route through the darkness and on through dawn and the following day to reach the finish line on Beachy Head outside Eastbourne. As well as testing stamina the teams needed their wits about them as they used teamwork, strategy and intelligence to gain bonus points for completing additional challenges along the way. ALC won the 20-mile “LITE” version of the challenge.
Alice Lisher, Community Fundraiser for Action Medical Research who organises the event, said: “It is a charity walk but people shouldn’t be fooled by that. It’s a really tough event which tests participants in so many ways but it’s also great fun and very rewarding,”. “A number of teams had returned this year to beat their previous times, including the winners on the full route from Brighton Honda, while ALC Health in Steyning took the trophy for the 20-mile PLOD Lite version. “This year we welcomed solo walkers for the first time so well done to David Hurrion and Sarah Cuttle who were our joint winners in that category.” Walkers have so far raised £48,000 to help save and change the lives of sick and disabled babies and children.
More than a grain of inspiration The beauty of woodworking is highlighted in a display at Horsham Museum until September 9. For more than 4,000 years the people of Britain have used wood to create a vast range of everyday objects ranging in scale, from houses to toothpicks. The ability of wood to be mastered by craftsmen into such beautiful objects shows how amazing both the wood and the craftsmen are, yet they are often taken for granted. At the museum’s current new exhibition Going with the Grain visitors can appreciate some stunning pieces in wood. Through the skills of these three craftsmen, the grainy contrasting patterns usually hidden by the tree are exposed in all their magnificence. Living material is transformed into sensual, exotic

bowls, multi-layered strata like layers morph into curvaceous organic formed wall hangings, and furniture celebrates rather than hides the fascinating grain. On show are the complex and intricate patterns of the bowls or sculptural designs by John Plater, who uses so-called defects such as burrs, whorls and staining to great effect. Paul Baden creates wooden lattice structures or figurines, by expertly layering different woods to create patterns like contours on a map. Colin Norgate’s furniture and household pieces, as decorative as they are functional, are individually crafted to perfection using traditional methods. Horsham Museum & Art Gallery is open Monday-Saturday 10am – 5pm. Free Admission. For more information: www. horshammuseum.org
For more than 60 years Action Medical Research has helped pioneer treatments and ways to prevent disease that have benefited millions of people in the UK and across the world. Research they’ve funded has helped to beat polio in the UK, develop ultrasound in pregnancy, fight meningitis and prevent stillbirths. Action Medical Research is currently funding research into meningitis, Down syndrome, epilepsy and premature birth, as well as some rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children. Regus offer for frustrated commuters Workspace provider, Regus, is coming to the aid of frustrated commuters, with the offer of free access to its Worthing Road business lounge for the month of August. Horsham commuters have been hit particularly hard, by much publicised difficulties with rail services, and the global workspace provider has stepped in, to offer a convenient place to work that eliminates the hassle of the daily journey to London. Recent reports suggest that rail delays, in South London alone, are costing the economy £70m per year. Nearly 22,000 people arrive in London, each morning rush hour, on suburban trains that don’t have enough space to accommodate them properly. According to the

Department for Transport, one in five workers travelling into London, by train, is forced to stand all the way. The Regus business lounge, on Worthing Road, is ergonomically designed and
equipped with highspeed connectivity to enable workers to turn-up, plug-in and be productive, rather than battle through the rush-hour crowds.
Richard Morris, UK CEO, Regus comments: “It is no secret that Horsham commuters are finding the commute particularly challenging at present. We hope that our offer provides a respite from the trek to and from London each day and also makes workers reconsider their daily routines. “Each headline about commuter chaos, places the commuting model under further scrutiny. Commuting is expensive, tiring and frustrating. Why are we asking people to continue to work in this way, when flexible workspace alternatives exist in nearly every town throughout the UK?” Free business lounge access at the Horsham site the will be given on a first-come, first-served basis throughout August.
Consumers in the South East put off holidays following Brexit New research on 2,000 Brits has revealed Brexit has caused serious money worries for consumers in the South East of the UK. Retailers could be set to see a drop in consumer spending as the research revealed over two thirds (67 per cent) of consumers across the South East are concerned about their personal finances following the Brexit vote. The research, from the UK’s largest money saving brand vouchercloud, also reported a 20 per cent increase in traffic following the Brexit vote, with Brits securing savings on items such as holidays. Vouchercloud predicts this surge will continue as shoppers prepare to tighten the purse strings. 45 per cent of consumers in the region already admit they always search for deals be-
fore they make any purchase, as they feel they get a better value for money. Chris Johnson, head of affiliate operations at vouchercloud commented, “Brexit has already had a powerful impact on the UK’s economy, which has left some consumers with a feeling of unease. At the moment money is one the biggest concerns following the vote, with many Brits being more cautious when it comes to spending money.” He continued: “With the rise in activity on our site, it is clear to see people are searching for vouchers and deals to help them save a little extra. This is a trend we can only see increasing over the next few months as Brits are preparing to save and we will continue to work with the UK’s leading retailers to offer the best possible discounts.”
What are the effects of divorce upon children? In the second of the series RB’s Family Law Team looks at the effects of divorce/separation upon children. There are many terrible dilemmas that face anyone contemplating divorce or separation. One of the most significant is the impact upon children. One would simply not be human if you fail to consider their wishes and what was in your childrens’ best interests. Furthermore the impact of divorce according to “research” (whether you accept it or not) is cause for concern. The incidences of failed relationships, under achievement etc. are startling. Notwithstanding all of the above some 82% of children and adolescents polled in a recent survey have stated that they would prefer their parents to divorce rather than stay in a marriage that was unhappy. Although parents understandably stay together “for the sake of the children” those said “children” can be alarmingly wise and they will realise sooner or later that their parents’ relationship is on poor terms. This article is not therefore about advising people what they should do. It is simply about giving them some of the surprising facts about how our children feel and then leaving parents to go away and reflect on this. However it appears that the case of staying together “for the children”, whilst founded on the best of intentions doesn’t necessarily serve the childrens’ interest. Therefore, if a couple are to divorce there may be some “golden rules” in conducting that divorce with your children in mind. It is also clear that when divorce is carried out properly children can manage very well. However there are a number of “pitfalls” that are to be avoided. Some of these take a great deal of patience but are very much in the childrens’ interest. Step 1 - Be respectful to the other parent.
It is a fact that children love both their parents but can’t understand why they don’t necessarily love each other anymore. Thus, if you bring your ex’s faults to their attention, however careful the language you use, this will be unpleasant for them. Children often feel the need to defend the parent being berated and therefore feel uncomfortable “taking sides”. Difficult as it may be, put yourself in your childrens’ position and recall how in your childhood you loved both your parents. Step 2 - Avoid misplaced resentment. Research has shown that in particularly nasty divorces a resentment that their parties have to their ex can be transferred to their children. This is particularly so where the children have a similar personality trait to the ex ie. one party is punctual or particularly tidy, the other less so. This is not your ex you see manifested in your child but your child: it’s part of their makeup. Step 3 - Avoid using children as a “pawn”. The instinct to “wreak havoc” once a relationship is over may be understandable. Children present every opportunity to be a vehicle for doing so. Disagreements over contact, joint holidays, meeting the new partner, and even maintenance can all be conveyed through a child. They should not be! These are matters that should be communicated directly or through lawyers. Furthermore ’children being children’, they can in some circumstances know how to “play one off against the other”. Some children going through divorce get two birthday parties which both parents trying to over-impress with more expensive presents etc. At a very early age the children will move from exploiting the situation to realising how harmful it is. Parents should resort to a parenting plan and mediation over these issues.
Step 4 - Treat special events with the respect they deserve. Children are often desperate for their parents to see them at the school sports day, performing at plays etc. They will often want both parents to attend for these milestones. If you still feel “raw” about a separation, remember that a child may recall that day for the rest of their lives and long after you have moved on. You may have to “fake it” but in the fullness of time they will be grateful to you for that. Step 5 - Work together and be seen to work together. You will always be the parents of your children. Big decisions like education and medical treatment will have to be taken together. Furthermore, in an all too brief period of time there will be graduations, wedding ceremonies and ultimately christenings. If you and your ex can get together for these events without your children being ‘on edge’ then you will have served their best interests. Remember you are still a family – you just happen to be one in which the parents are no longer together. You will have to function as a family on that basis and this can be very rewarding for all concerned. Indeed Relate even assist families on the post- divorce situation. In doing so they listen to the parents and also to the children. This will help everyone “move on” without doing so through a Court of law! It is unlikely that a family going through divorce are where they want to be. However you can either make the best of the situation or the worst. Help is on Hand When that decision is being contemplated, it is wise to seek ‘without obligation’ legal advice. RB have run a Family Law clinic for many years for people who are precisely at that point. By using this service you remain very much
‘in control’. Many people are concerned that on seeing a solicitor, events will spiral out of control. They will not – the service is completely confidential. You are also receiving the right advice at the right time! For further information telephone 01403 252492. Did you know? There are on-line advice videos

The Capitol confirms 2 more Panto stars Lead singer from Phats & Small and TV Star, Martin Ramsdin (aka Bunny Galore), confirmed for roles in Horsham’s spectacular pantomime
Revealed
Interview with a Mediaeval Witch ‘Nanny Obz’ How did you get into witchcraft? I were born with a natural flair for it, me old Ma told me I entered this World with a wrinkled angry face like a wise old Grandmother. I also arrived with a squint (Handy for seeing into the other realms) She said I were prophesying before the age of three, Seemed natural to learn the Arts soon as I could read. (This is actually all TRUE!!!! lol).
How long have you been a witch for? Well tis 45 year since me birth, so oi suppose THAT long.
What is you most used spell ingredient? That I couldn’t tell ee, some things is best kept to those of us what knows.
What can the runes tell you - can they see into the future / predict the future? Every man and woman knows what’s best for ‘em, I merely helps ‘em to find the truth within themselves by casting the stones.
What is the most interesting challenge you have had as a witch? Because of my long dark hair, pointed chin, warts and slightly crossed eyes, I finds it hard to blend into the crowd on market day, even if I dresses up and pretends to be a LADY, some bogger always knows I is a witch.
Are there any areas of witchcraft that you would avoid?
I tries to avoid the DARK ARTS, curses and what have ‘ee, but sometimes tis difficult, folk often need a little boot up the backside to learn ‘em proper.
How can I tell if you are a real witch and not just tricking me? Well I has a bithmark on my left thigh in the shape of a “W” I could show ‘ee (In private) Folks would say the DEVIL has marked me as his own, but I aint having that.... (Again, all true).
The Capitol have confirmed two more cast members for this year’s family pantomime, Aladdin, which opens on December 8. Ben Ofoedu will be the Genie of the lamp. Well known as the lead singer of Brighton-based band Phats & Small and their huge international hit “Turn Around”, Ben has been involved with several bands, including Benz, REDhill, The Intenso Project, and Four Story, who went on to appear on Making Your Mind Up, in the hope of representing the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest with their song “Hand On My Heart”. Ben and his fiancé, Vanessa Feltz, have become quite a celebrity couple, having taken part in a number of television programmes, including Channel 4’s Celebrity Wife Swap, in which they swapped with the late Paul Daniels and his wife, Debbie McGee; the Virgin 1 show A Restaurant in our Living Room; the BBC One daytime quiz show Pointless Celebrities, All Star Mr & Mrs, ITV’s Who Wants To Be a Millionaire (in which they won £150,000 for a cancer charity) and Celebrity Big Brother’s “Bit On the Side” as well as co-hosting The Vanessa Show on Channel 5. Ben said: “I can’t wait to join the Horsham panto cast, this Christmas, for what I’m sure is going to be one of the best pantos Hor-

Slinfold Golf & Country Club – Opening of Academy Course
Watched by a crowd of excited onlookers, and after much anticipation, the Par 3 short course, at Slinfold Golf & Country Club, had its official opening to members on July 21. Named ‘The Academy Course’, the first 5 holes of the new 9 hole golf course saw their first golfers teeing off in glorious summer weather, fit for a wonderful day of golf. The honour of the first official tee off went to Head Greenkeeper, Dan Saunders, who, along with his Greenkeeping team, has worked tirelessly towards opening this exciting new facility. The Academy Course has been specifically designed to offer golfers an alternative, and addition, to the existing mature 18 hole golf course, and to compliment use of the Driving Range, to provide an all round golfing experience at the Club. The course, nestled sympathetically within the landscape at the entrance to the Club, has two well established lakes and a beautiful vista to the surrounding Sussex countryside. The undulations in the course makes for a challenging and unusual environment that tests golfers with a handicap, whilst giving the novice golfer an introduction to playing prior to venturing onto the 18 hole course. Golfers relayed their initial feel-
ings, after their first round on the Academy Course: “A really useful additional facility at Slinfold Golf & Country Club. I liked it so much I can’t wait to go round again!” Tim Hackshaw, Mens Captain “The greens are great for all handicaps” Roger Dobson, Greenkeeper “It’s interesting to read the hazards, and this is a very visually attractive course” Jill Meek, Ladies Captain “Every hole is different with something for all abilities and standards enabling everyone to be challenged. The course already has a mature feel to it, the Club has done a great job” Mike Yorke, My Golf Academy Founder “The Academy Course is a wonderful asset to the Club, especially to help younger players with the transition from Driving Range to 18 hole golf course” Dave Parr, Seniors Vice Captain “This is a fun and challenging test of golf and is ideal for any golfer that is short on time, or wishes to have a practice before a full game on the 18 hole course. Our Greenkeeping Team members should be proud of themselves. All their hard work has paid dividends and produced a great course” Luke Blacker, Club General Manager

Welcome to our monthly ‘Pet Post’, a section dedicated to news, advice and stories from the lives of our loveable friends. This week our sponsored columnist Abbi Moon from the Horsham branch of the RSPCA talks about how to care for your horse. If you have any stories, pictures or tips you would like to feature in this section, please email dpearson@thedistrictpost.co.uk. We hope you enjoy the read.
Finding...the right tank abbi moon RSPCA
Remember the craze for terrapins, chipmunks and clownfish as pets, all inspired by the latest movie blockbuster? Well animal welfare and environmental organisations
are bracing themselves for the fallout from Finding Dory, which was released in cinemas on 29th July. All of the Pacific blue tangs (aka Dory) that you will find in saltwater aquariums today have been wild caught as breeding in captivity is very unsuccessful. Taking animals from the wild has devas-
tating effects. The methods used to catch the fish can decimate habitats and kill many non-target animals. Many of those that are caught will not survive the conditions they endure during transport. And if you think fish can’t feel pain, think again. Although studies have found that fish don’t have the same nerve recep-
tors as humans, studies have found that fish do feel pain, releasing pain-relieving endorphins like humans do when exposed to pain-causing stimuli.
If you want pet fish that will reward you for years to come, we recommend going to a rehoming centre or reputable aquatics retailer who will give you the correct advice to ensure your fish are healthy. Be sure to only purchase your fish from shops with healthy animals and ask your retailer about the sources of their fish. Owning aquarium fish can be rewarding but it’s a big responsibility. Fish aren’t simple creatures to look after they have very specific needs and require attentive and routine care. Fish can be challenging pets; meeting their complex biological, environmental and behavioural needs takes a great deal of preparation, investment, time and care. Getting the right tank is essential. Goldfish bowls, jars or children’s tanks are designed as ornaments without any consideration for animal welfare. The small size is inadequate as even fancy goldfish require at least 60 litres of water each. Small volumes don’t allow for a stable environment as there isn’t enough space for an efficient filter, so waste products can’t be removed. The low surface area also means that not enough oxygen will be absorbed into the water and the temperature levels can alter rapidly which can cause stress and even death. Bigger is better - always aim to provide more than the minimum required for the eventual size of fish you want to get. Position your aquarium away from heat sources such as direct sunlight and only add fish once your aquarium has been set up and running for at least two weeks. It is essential that you research the care requirements of fish before deciding to keep them. Also consider who will be able to care for the fish if you are away, how long they will live, how large they will grow and if you are prepared to invest in what is necessary to care for them. Read up on fish keeping. There are sure to be books in Horsham library and you can try one of the good fish keeping magazines. You can also find out more at www.rspca.org. uk/fish
Leaving your cat behind this summer holiday? MedicAnimal’s tips for what you need to know and do Ahead of the summer holidays, and with millions of Britons likely to head abroad, many pet owners will be deciding whether to take their pet with them, as well as many others considering what they should do if leaving them at home. MedicAnimal, the UK’s leading pet healthcare retailer, has put together a handy list of what cat owners need to think about before to make the best decision for your cat. Recent research showed that three-fifths (60%) of owners admitted feeling sad when leaving their pet at home when they go on holiday, with many concerned it can lead to issues such as anxiety and separationrelated behavioural problems. While the nature of dog ownership means that it is likely owners would need to take their dog to a kennel, it is possible, with the correct plans in a place that cats can be left at home alone.
1.Friends and neighbours: Certainly the best option is to have a pet sitter or a trusted neighbour or friend visit daily to feed, water and socialise with your cat. Nothing beats the family home from your cat’s viewpoint. The frequency (minimum twice daily) should match the usual feeding times and they should monitor your cat’s litter for anything irregular. If the carer only pops in and out they may not have enough time to really observe how your cat is doing physically and emotionally. 2 Don’t underestimate your cat’s needs: Too many people view cats as low maintenance and do not hesitate to leave them on their own for sometimes up to four/five days;
3.No one likes an empty house: Cats are sociable animals and unexpectedly having an empty house can be quite confusing and cause anxiety; 4.Considering a cattery? The next best choice is a boarding cattery; there are good ones, great ones and truly terrible ones. Make sure you visit beforehand and imagine it from your cat’s viewpoint. How does it smell? Are there loud noises? Do they provide hidey holes and places to climb up and view downwards? Is there enough room in the cage? I.e. enough to have a decent space between the litter tray and the food? 5.What social elements does the cattery provide? Do they socialise and play with the cats and what type of environmental enrichment do they provide? Importantly, do they have access to an emergency veterinarian? Is it managed at night? What do they do to help anxious or stressed cats? Do the cages face each other (as this can be stressful)? Andrew Bucher, Chief Veterinary Officer at MedicAnimal, said: “While cats are often seen as independent animals that can be left to fend for themselves, this is usually far from the truth. Cats are highly sociable and need lots of attention and support like any pet. If you’re going on holiday and are likely to be leaving your cat behind, it’s really important that you take their needs into consideration and ensure that whatever provision you make - whether it is a friend, neighbour or cattery – is sufficient to meet their everyday health and social needs.”

Neutering my dog In addition to preventing unwanted pregnancies there are many health and behavioural benefits of neutering that make it a desirable procedure. The benefits of spaying female dogs or bitches are clear. If neutered at or prior to the first season you can significantly reduce the the chances of mammary tumours occurring in later life. In addition, the problems associated with managing a bitch in season every six months are eradicated. Uterine disease is also common in bitches and neutering will prevent this occurring. In male dogs castration will eliminate testicular cancer and also problems associated with the prostate. Some behavioural issues can be resolved by castration but not all of them. At Arun Veterinary Group we encourage all owners to neuter their pets. We offer a complimentary pre neuter check to discuss the procedure in detail with a vet and ensure that the time is right for you and your pet.
What is involved in neutering my dog?
A small area of the front leg is shaved and an intravenous catheter placed for administering fluids and medications. A blood test is taken to provide information in relation to liver and kidney function. Assuming the blood test reveals no underlying problems, a preanesthetic injection along with pain medication is administered. Once the pre med has taken effect, an anaesthetic injection is administered via the catheter. The endotracheal (breathing) tube is placed in the airway to assist with maintaining the anaesthetic. As your dog’s heart and breathing are monitored by a nurse, another nurse prepares the surgical site. The veterinary surgeon scrubs and “gowns up,” and the patient is moved to the surgery table; the incision site is prepared. The patient is connected to a respiratory monitor and anesthesia is adjusted and monitored accordingly.
The surgery begins.
Once the surgery is finished the patient is transferred to the kennel area where they are closely watched until the endotracheal tube can be safely removed. It is at this time that we usually call to assure you that all has gone well and to schedule a discharge time. The operating room and the surgical instruments are sterilised to prepare for the next surgery. When the patient is awake and able to walk, they are given a meal and taken out to toilet. On discharge the nurse will go through the after care with you and explain the post operative pain relief as well as the feeding regime.
What pain medication will my dog receive?
Initially painkillers are given as part of the pre anesthetic protocol. Following the procedure, your pet is sent home with 4 – 5 days worth of pain relief medication.
Why are intravenous fluids included?
Intravenous fluid therapy is an integral part of the anaesthetic protocol at Arun Veterinary Group. Anesthesia can lower blood pressure during any surgery. Intravenous fluids increase blood volume, thereby maintaining your dog’s blood pressure at a safer level. In addition, should drugs ever be required in an unexpected situation the indwelling catheter provides immediate intravenous access.
Why is pre-operative blood work required? (My dog is young and healthy)
The test tells us if your dog’s organs, particularly those associated with the metabolism of the aesthetic agents, are functioning properly. If congenital or age related abnormalities are identified, anesthesia protocols can be modified to ensure optimal safety during the procedure. If no abnormalities are detected we have at least established a valuable baseline for future reference.
How can all this be done for such a reasonable cost?
In an effort to reduce the number of unwanted puppies and kittens, Arun Veterinary Group has subsidised the cost of your dog’s neutering. Another comparably involved surgery would certainly be more expensive. It is important to note however, that even with the costs reduced your dog has received the best veterinary care possible. We perform the procedure using the highest standards available today to minimise the risk of infection and make the procedure as pain free as possible. Be assured that high quality veterinary care is never compromised at Arun Veterinary Group.
Should I do anything special when my dog comes home?
For a week or so after surgery, you should keep your dog’s activity restricted, though shorter walks are fine. Do not encourage running, jumping, and other active play. Your dog may be a little quiet and sleep more than usual for the first couple of days. After the initial recovery period whereby we would advise feeding a diet provided by us we then recommend that you feed your dog as you usually would. You will need to examine the wound daily. Absorbable sutures do not require removal. We will ask you to return during the post operation period so we can inspect the wound and ensure everything is ok.

The future looks bright for post-brexit housing market As the EU Referendum approached in June, demand for housing, supply of available properties, and the number of sales going through were stable. However, immediately following the result, agents witnessed uncertainty from sellers, and supply fell momentarily, according to the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) June Housing Market report1.
In June, estate agents saw an increase in demand overall, suggesting buyers weren’t fazed by the risk of Brexit in the lead up to the vote. There were an average 330 house hunters registered per member branch last month – an increase of nine per cent from May, when 304 buyers were registered, the lowest number recorded since November 2013. However, although June saw growth in the number of prospective buyers,
demand still remains low in comparison to June last year. However, instantly following the Brexit result, three in five (57 per cent) reported a drop in demand from prospective buyers and three in five (58 per cent) saw supply fall in the week immediately following the vote. However, it is expected this will level out in July. First-time-buyers First-time-buyers (FTBs) were not impacted by the Brexit result. Immediately following the result only three in ten (28 per cent) NAEA agents witnessed uncertainty from the group, while a third (30 per cent) of total house sales in June were made to FTBs, the highest number of sales since October last year. Houses available and sales agreed per branch The Brexit vote did not affect the number sales that completed in June either, with a total of eight sales completing per branch last month – a figure which has not shifted from May. Further to this, the supply of available housing also remained the same – with an average of 37 properties registered per member branch in June. Mark Hayward, managing director, National Association of Estate Agents, said: “In periods of extreme political
We remain upbeat and need others in the industry to do so as well. and economic uncertainty, the housing market will always respond. However, it’s a relief to see that looking at the whole month overall, buyers were still keen to buy, sellers were still keen to sell and sales were still going through at the same level as we’d expect. It’s only natural that immediately following the vote supply fell but our figures show that the lead up to the vote wasn’t all doom and gloom, which should be a good indication of the months to come. “We remain upbeat and need others in the industry to do so as well. The new Housing Minister confirming his commitment to building £1m new homes will be encouraging for many buyers, especially those looking to buy their first home. Hopefully we should soon see housing market confidence bouncing back to the levels seen pre-Brexit.”

Hornets overcome YM in pre-season clash Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor The landlords and tenants – Horsham YMCA and Horsham FC – played out this preseason friendly in front of a decent Gorings Mead crowd last weekend, with the result going as expected in favour of the tenants. After coming quickly out of the blocks YM took the lead after just over a minute through the lively Max Howell who reacted quickest to a loose ball.
With the influential Joe Shelley and the dangerous Darren Boswell having a lot of the ball Horsham got back into the game and new YM keeper Danny Leeds was stretched to keep his side ahead. The Hornets got the goal their possession warranted when Boswell struck the equaliser on 27 minutes which was quickly followed by two further goals in two minutes from Shelley and Boswell’s second to give Horsham a 3-1 half time lead. YM suffered badly through injury, not least new ‘keeper Leeds who was

replaced by Fox shortly before the break. The second half was less eventful and the game was finally wrapped up when Hornets substitute Lewis completed the scoring in the 75th minute. After the game a concerned YM boss Peter Buckland said, “They’re a very good side, Horsham; I’ve got to give them credit. The most worrying thing for me to come out of it is that we’ve got an injury list now of eight players, and we lost another four today.”

Jolyon Palmer’s recent rise halted at Hockenheim
After a very promising outing at the previous weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix Jolyon Palmer and his Renault Sport Formula One team did not have an enjoyable time at last week’s German Grand Prix, held at the Hockenheimring. Starting 14th on the grid following a good qualifying session on the Saturday, Palmer made a decent start, he however flat-spotted his tyres then made contact with a rival on the first lap, necessitating an early pit stop, and giving the Southwater driver a tough time
fighting from the back of the pack. The early setbacks put paid to Palmer’s hopes of his first Formula 1 points and he eventually finished in 19th place, 3 places behind his team mate Kevin Magnussen. After the race a disappointed Palmer said, “Everything was really positive coming into this event, and I had a good start; I think I was up to tenth, so it’s a disappointing result today. I had a big lock up in turn two and massively flatspotted my tyres. I could barely see where I was going because of the vibrations and I tipped a Williams whilst trying to hold on from one of the McLarens. This damaged
my front wing which we changed at the second pit stop. After that there wasn’t much I could do. It’s a shame but we can take the positives, put the rest behind us and focus on the second half of the season.” British driver, and current F1 World Champion, Lewis Hamilton won the race and in doing so opened up a massive gap of 19 points over rival Nico Rosberg in his attempt to win a 4th world title. There is now a break of a few weeks before the next round of the F1 season which will be the Belgium Garand Prix at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps on August 28.

Melvin Green and Arthur Varndell, with a 17 all draw. A visit to the new green at Horsham proved more fruitful. 4 triples played 18 ends of friendly bowls on a fast green that seemed to suit the Pulborough players. Of the 4 Pulborough teams, 3 were victorious, even though Horsham staged a comeback in the second half. Top rink for the day went to John Brown, Ivan Salmon and Mike Richards, 17/15. The final score was a narrow victory for Horsham. The mixed pair’s event, the Ron and Eileen Branch Shield, took place at Pulborough with 8 teams taking part in 3 sessions of 7 ends, with the overall score determining the victor. Even with a lack of female players the top 2 pairings were mixed with Malcolm and Jane Gray matching their performance of last year by finishing second, behind the runaway winners of John Brown and Pauline Adsett, whose outstanding play was impossible to match on the day. The Branch Shield was awarded by John Branch, on behalf of his family, whose name will be forever part of Pulborough Bowls Club.
Budding Roffey sports star Josh Dance will soon need a bigger trophy cabinet! 14 year old Josh has just added the Haywards Heath Junior Open tournament to his growing list of victories, seeing off a field of 30 competitors. Playing off a handicap of 9 Josh shot a gross 75, nett 66, the par score at Haywards Heath being 71. He stormed through the back nine shooting one under par, chipping in on the last from the side of the green for a birdie, telling the District Post: “That’s my best win to date and I’m really pleased because I haven’t been playing too well lately. It’s a very difficult tight tree-lined course and I wasn’t confident of winning at the half way stage, but it went really well!” Josh lives for sport, playing cricket as a bowling all rounder for Roffey thirds and captaining Horsham Tigers FC as centre back. But, golf is Josh’s real passion, he has already represented Sussex on several occasions and soon hopes to step up to the U16 group after previously carrying off the Captain’s Day Tournament at his home

club, Cottesmore and the Sussex Junior Open at Albourne. Proud father Darren says: “He’s got great potential, perhaps as a golf professional if he keeps working at it” and, with that in mind father and son are heading off to Scotland to play a few challenging rounds over the border.

Mixed week for Park with a win and a loss Bowls David Spurr - Horsham Park BC West Hoathly 65 – 37 Horsham Park West Hoathly took home advantage when they beat Horsham Park by 28 shots. Park was only able to win on one of the 3 rinks when Skip Frank Heath with Ros Medland, Peter Schlotter and Shirley Stone beat their opposition by 6 shots, 18 to 12. Unfortunately, this didn’t compensate for Park’s other 2 losing rinks. Ewhurst 97 – 110 Horsham Park Horsham Park enjoyed a narrow win by 13 shots when they played away against Ewhurst. Park won well on 2 of the 6 rinks but lost marginally the other

Horsham Gymnastics Centre’s Sports Acro squad had 11 competitors at this year’s British Championships, with every one of them finishing top ten ranked in Britain. The British Championships – one of the highest ranked competitions in the world of Sports Acro Gymnastics – was held at Liverpool’s Echo Arena over three days that produced high levels of competitive competition. In the 11 – 16 years women’s group competition Horsham had two groups competing; Georgia Brock, Ella Nelson & Phoebe Rochead and Ella Dronfield, Myla Kettell & Zoe Gaudiano. After the Friday Balance display, Georgia, Ella and Phoebe were leading the competition and both groups went into Saturday’s Dynamic display looking to reach Sunday’s finals. After the Dynamic performance Ella, Myla and Zoe just missed out on Sunday’s final, finishing ninth, but Georgia, Ella and Phoebe went through eventually finishing ranked 8th in Britain in the final. In the 12 – 18 years women’s group Emily Steere, Zoe Schubert and Natalie O’Hara went through to Sunday’s finals after two good displays that saw them qualify in 3rd place. On the Sunday – in what was Emily Steere’s final competition due to university the Horsham group put in a great

performance to finish ranked 5th in Britain. Horsham’s other competitors, the women’s pair of Maddie Kent and Aimee Tolhurst, also made it through Friday and Saturday’s qualifying to Sundays final where they finished just outside the medals in 4th place; a great result given the top quality gymnasts competing. After what was another very successful competition for Horsham’s Sports Acro squad, head coach Ali Harmer said, “It has been a very busy few weeks for the squad. Following our domination at the Sussex Championships and the ex-
cellent trip to Italy for the International Turin Cup I am delighted and proud of all their results achieved at the British Championships. We have learned a lot about ourselves over the past few weeks of intense competition not least of all being that we can compete with the best gymnasts around. I am confident given the squads fast increasing improvement that next year we will come away with a medal or two. I would like also to thank the parents who travel and support the gymnasts; without their devoted support none of the success would be possible.”
Sussex Oak canter through to Gullick win Gullick Cup winners, Sussex Oak
Gullick Cup Final Southwater 53 All Out (17.3 overs) Sussex Oak 54-1 (9 overs) Sussex Oak won by 9 wickets Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Although, as the scores suggest, this year’s Gullick Cup Final at Horsham Cricket Club resulted in a resounding win for the Sussex Oak, there were some memorable performances. The Gullick Cup competition – which began in 1972 - is designed to enable non regular cricketers to participate, and is played in that
spirit. To get to the final Sussex Oak had beaten Crabtree Cavaliers and Southwater had overcome Red Lyon Slinfold, off the last possible ball. Southwater had won the trophy in 1986 and 1987 but this was not their year, runs were at a premium as they started slowly and lost wickets regularly, Matthew Woodhatch taking 3-5 and Harry Dear 3-14, both off 4 overs, crisp outfield fielding featuring an outstanding catch by Josh Medley. The 54 run target was unlikely to trouble Sussex Oak, for whom Joe Clark – brother of Horsham’s Ed, Ollie and Tom smote a quick-fire 30 not out, telling the District Post: “It
was great to play for my local pub, especially as I’ve had dodgy knees and back recently!” Sussex Oak Captain Ollie Nottage, a Warnham player and son of the pub landlord said: “We were in the final eight years ago and really wanted to win it this time: we had a good squad out and it was great!” Horsham President Barry Peay paid tribute to Gullick organiser David Horsman and David’s fellow umpire Tom Hogsflesh along with praise for scorers Neil Chartres and Jenny Wise – and, especially, to Richard Marshall for another good pitch.

Roffey increase top of the table lead with big win Leigh Harrison took 4-33 as Roffey increased their league title push

On Roffey’s last two encounters with East Grinstead they sustained heavy defeats but this time they redressed the balance with an emphatic 30 point win, increasing their lead at the top of the table – with a game in hand to 11 points over Cuckfield and 27 ahead of third placed Horsham. Put in to bat East Grinstead were immediately in trouble against Leigh Harrison and George Fleming, Leigh taking 4-33 and George 3-38 from 15 overs each. The clatter of wickets reduced the hosts to 45-7 and although former Roffey colt Ollie Graham top scored with 47 and Ben Davies made 30, the other nine batsmen could only muster 38 between them and a target of 127 was unlikely to cause serious difficulty. Luke Barnard took 2-29 and Rohit Jagota 1-18. Roffey started brightly, putting
on 50 for the first wicket, Theo Rivers making 30, until three batsmen fell for the addition of just four more runs. But any worries were soon eased by Rohit’s unbeaten 52 as, batting with Alex Southon, he secured victory with over half of Roffey’s allocation unused. Josh Fleming said: “We were 50 for none and then had a bit of a wobble but it was easy enough in the end!” Leigh Harrison added: “Coming back from holiday it was good to find a bit of form and take early wickets. The edges went to hand - we bowled and fielded well today.” And, delighted Roffey captain Matt Davies summed up the dressing room feeling with: “This was a really great win for us. The deck was good but Leigh, George and Barney (Luke Barnard) were outstanding. Barney’s been working on some new deliveries and that really paid off.” In a big weekend for Roffey with 60 points available, on Saturday they return home to welcome Preston Nomads, looking to avenge their defeat at Fulking in June, then on Sunday they host the struggling Sussex Development XI.

Billingshurst keep hopes alive with crucial win Sussex Premier League Brighton & Hove 122 All Out (29.1 overs) Billingshurst 126-6 (40.1 overs) Billingshurst won by 4 wickets Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Billingshurst, eager to retain their Premier League status, targeted the Brighton game for a much needed win, bowled them out for a below par score and knocked off the runs with nearly 40 overs to spare. Yet, if that all sounds too easy, it wasn’t - after Billingshurst had lost a cluster of wickets Brighton were on the rampage and victory was harder to achieve than it might have been. This was, though a great team win for Billingshurst: after they had inserted Brighton, Andy Barr, bowling fast and straight, immediately put them on the rack with a stunning hat trick – all LBWs. From 3-4 the visitors staggered to 18-5 and then 33-6 before Alasdair Wilson made a run a ball 59 - until he was removed by a superb diving catch by Barr - and Jack Chopping 32. Abidine Sakande and Ben Williams took two wick-
ets each and Tim Weston one, in addition to his two run outs, nine batsmen scoring just 10 runs between them. Andy Barr said: “The conditions were muggy first up and it was swinging. Then, when the ball got older it was moving off the deck. I’ve been bowling well without much reward so it was good to get among the wickets.” After enjoying their tea Billingshurst soon found themselves 7-2. They recovered to 61-3 courtesy of twenties from Tom Haynes and Scott Stratton but at 88-6 alarm bells were ringing loud and clear. But, Mike Burroughs dug in and, accompanied by Rob Woodman, who struck five sweet fours, they gave Billingshurst a vital 30 point win, taking them to level pegging with Brighton on 161 points, 55 ahead of bottom club Worthing who lost again. Billingshurst Captain Ben Williams told the District Post: “They could have been out for a lot less but it was a great win. Andy bowled so well at the start and then Rob demonstrated his excellent cover driving! If we continue to play confidently then I see no reason why we can’t stay up by winning a couple of our remaining five games.” Tomorrow (Saturday August 6) Billingshurst visit current runners up Cuckfield.

the ninth minute. Borough’s Nathaniel Pinney split the Horsham defence with a run before setting up Gavin McCallum for a simple finish. Borough continued to have most of the ball and looked the greater threat going forward and it was not until just before the break that Horsham had their first real attempt on goal; a well hit Darren Boswell shot bringing out a fine save from ‘keeper Lewis Carey. It was so nearly 2-0 however just before the end of the first half when Alex Duncan did well to head clear Jamie Taylor’s attempt on goal and then Gavin McCallum rattled the crossbar with Horsham keeper James Shaw well beaten. The match was effectively over just 15 seconds after the restart
when Pinney rose to head Taylor’s cross past Shaw for 2-0. The two Borough strikers Pinney and Taylor were a thorn in Horsham’s side all night and between them epitomised the difference in class showed by the Conference team. When on 62 minutes Pinney again left the Horsham defence in a trail behind him, before rounding Shaw to slot home, Borough had the Shield firmly in their grasp. From here on the match became a bit niggly with many Horsham players reacting to quite a few unnecessary heavy tackles from the Borough defence and so manager Dom Di Paola must have been pleased to hear the final whistle come with no obvious injuries or red cards against his players.
After a performance they will wish to forget, Horsham with just four points from the match slip to third, now 16 behind runners up Cuckfield and 27 adrift from leaders Roffey. Bexhill won the toss and lost an early wicket to a Sam Cushing LBW but then a 208 run partnership between left hander Sam Roberts (91) and Shawn Johnson (120) put the visitors in a strong position. Roberts was dropped, and demonstrated how to build an innings, by first batting watchfully and then accelerating and although three more wickets fell, Michael Munday, Paul Williams and Tom Johnson taking one apiece, the 256 target was undoubtedly demanding, especially as Cuckfield’s senior players were contributing well as a unit. Much depended on whether Horsham could create
a sound platform from which to launch their response. Joe Cox, a former Assistant Groundsman at Horsham made the first breakthrough but at 44-1 there was no hint of disasters to follow – until Sam Roberts, again displaying his outstanding all round capability, took 4-27 and Josh Beeslee 5-32, Horsham sliding from 64-2 to 95-8, from which there was to be no salvation. After his 151 for Horsham Thursday XI two days earlier, Joe Ludlow made 38 but only three other batsmen reached double figures. Michael Thornely told the District Post: “It was gettable but we made their bowlers look better than they really were.” Jonny Whiting added: “After we got an early wicket they put on a big stand then we got off to a good start but lost some cheap wickets.” Needing to re-ignite their push for the title, tomorrow (Saturday August 6) Horsham travel to seventh placed Hastings whom they beat by 113 runs at Cricketfield Road in June.
