Horsham set to buzz for Piazza Italia weekend phil dennett News Editor
Horsham will buzz for three days next weekend to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its Piazza Italia festival over the Easter break. Organisers promise new attractions and a fun theme on the three days, Friday, Saturday, and Monday, catering for many interests. Responding to visitor feedback from previous years, more hot food stalls will be available across the event including Garlic Wood Farm and The Pig and Jacket, both of whom are promising an Italian twist on their popular menus. Carmela’s will also run a hot food stall and there will be on street Pizza vendors each day to supplement the capacity of Horsham’s great range of local restaurants and cafes. Horsham Piazza Italia is organised and managed by Horsham District Council and is brought to life under the banner of the Horsham Time Well Spent events programme supported strongly by voluntary groups and businesses.
Across the Easter weekend Piazza Italia 2017 will feature a childrens’ charity each day, Chestnut Tree House on Good Friday, The Children’s Trust on Saturday and Winston’s Wish on Easter Monday. As featured in the event’s promotional videos on www.horshamtimewellspent. tv the Sporting Bears club will be offering dream rides on behalf of all three charities on Good Friday and Easter Monday with more than 10 fantastic cars each day. Bookings can be made from the Brock Taylor office at the Corner of East Street and Market Square. The amphitheatre in the Carfax will be home to a new Kwik Fit Road Safety Zone across all three days of the festival with the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership, Institute of Advanced Motoring and SERV Sussex. Stay Safe Motoring School will be offering its under-17 driving experiences from the adjacent Swan Yard. Local businesses ATOM and GL Property are once again supporting the event having sponsored the ‘start gate’ in the Carfax. Horsham Rotary’s Easter ‘Bunny Hunt’ Trail runs across 25 locations throughout the town during the School Holidays from April 8 until April 23 inclusive. A public meeting is being held in a village to discuss potential oil drilling in the West Chiltington area. Organisers say the firm UKOG and local council representative are invited to come to the session on April 30 from 7-9pm, at Pulborough Village Hall. Meanwhile more than 60 people gathered to protest about the prospect of oil drilling in their parish. They held the demonstration on
the green at the Adversane Lane and A29 crossroads. Banners and signs included the messages ‘Keep it in the ground’ and ‘Don’t Poison our Waterways for Profit’. Ian Gammie, the Chairman of the Adversane Residents Associations said: “In the last couple of weeks, we’ve found out that UKOG have taken over the site, but we don’t know what they’ve actually got permission to do. There hasn’t been enough consultation on safety generally. I would like the company to share the details of what they intend to do at the site. Surely they have a social responsibility to let locals know.” The Post invited UKOG to comment but to date no response had been received.

Technology could ease loneliness Older people who feel lonely are being offered help from technology. They will be offered advice to introduce them to digital reading and eLibrary services at their local library. As part of the scheme, libraries in West Sussex have been granted £178,000 to fund innovative new projects to help residents use technology. The grant from Arts Council Englandwill pay for equipment including tablets and laptops. West Sussex was one of only 30 library services in the country to win its bid for the funding. Library staff will use this new technology to introduce residents to digital reading and eLibrary services. The county council says that one aim of the project is to combat the loneliness experienced by one in four older
people in the county. Staff will be able to demonstrate how online services, like social media, can reduce feelings of isolation. Lesley Sim, who leads the Library Service at West Sussex County Council, said: “We are delighted that our bid has been successful. “This is an incredibly exciting, innovative project which will make a real difference to peoples’ lives. “I would like to express my thanks to the Arts Council England for the opportunity and we look forward to getting started.” The service will also offer help to jobseekers by introducing them to online job searching and assist people with disabilities by supporting them to use specialist apps that can help with everyday communication.

SPARROWS DAY 2017
Council chief sleeps out for charity A group of 30 volunteers tackled a sleepout at a Horsham football ground to help others. They found places to bed down in the grounds of Horsham YMCA Football Club as part of Sleep Easy 2017. The group was raising awareness of youth homelessness as well as vital funds for YMCA DownsLink Group’s work in Horsham and Crawley. Tom Crowley, CEO of Horsham District Council joined the sleepout along with colleagues Rob Jarvis, Housing Services Manager, and Brian Elliott, Property and Facilities Manager. Mr Crowley said: “The experience was unforgettable. both the ordeal of sleeping on the cold ground but also the really positive atmosphere as we sat around the fire chatting and taking part in a quiz. Above all, it brought home to us all how dreadful it is that many people across the country don’t do this through choice. they have no other option.” The charity says more and more young people are at risk of, or actually experiencing homelessness and YMCA works to support and enable them to find safe accommodation and direction in life. Helen Gibbs slept out at the football ground and said: “ “We did sleeping out ‘in style’ with plenty of cardboard and warm sleeping bags, but it really brings home the misery of what it must be like to be homeless. Amazing work the YMCA does and I’m very happy to be able to raise some money for the work they do.” Four Sleep Easy events took place on the same night, with a further 100 people involved, in

In addition to those we see on the streets are the hidden homeless who are sofa surfing not knowing each morning where they will be the next night. “We are grateful to all those who slept “rough” for just one night to raise awareness of youth homelessness. Local groups are being asked to nominate a £5,000 good cause in the Billingshurst area. The Billingshurst and District Lions Club is inviting suggestions for a major centennial project to be selected from ideas put to it by any of the local communities or a local organisation. Club President Peter Coleman
said: “The club is looking for a project that will make a real difference to people, whether young or old. As a Club the Lions are prepared to donate funds, help fund raise or get their hands dirty – whatever is required. The project should have an urgent need and must benefit the community as a whole.
“The Lions are prepared to invest £5,000 in the project and, if a project is identified that is really needed, we may be prepared to go beyond that figure. “We are asking all local organisations in Billingshurst, Slinfold, Barns Green, Shipley, Loxwood, Wisborough Green, Kirdford, Rudgwick, Plaistow and Ifold to publicise our offer within your community and support all who wish to make an approach to us. “Initially we require an outline letter providing detail of the need identified. We will then prioritise responses and meet with the chosen organisations to understand what is required in greater detail.” First responses are required by the end of June. Those organisations making it to the shortlist will be asked to present their suggestion in detail to the Club by the end of September at which time a winner will be chosen and the scope of the project agreed. All ideas and suggestions will be kept on file for future consideration.” All responses should be sent to Lion Mike Bobker, 38 Rowan Drive, Billingshurst RH14 9NF who can be contacted by email at ‘joanmike38@hotmail.com.

Gymnasts achieve best results On the podium
Blooming good gift from flower club A flower club that has blossomed for 66 years has given awardwinning local fund raisers a boost. The Billingshurst Macmillan Cancer Fund support group has received what it called a “very generous” donation of £338.28 from the West Chiltington Flower Club this week. Mrs Joan Wadey founded the club in 1951 to promote the love of flowers and it holds regular meetings at West Chiltington Village Hall. The club says it is very active and has a busy programme which

The Billingshurst Macmillan support group won the 2016 Fundraising group-committee award for London and the South East, given by the national Macmillan charity. Last year it celebrated 20 years since its formation, and during that time it has raised more than £1 million to help support people with cancer and their families.

Gymnasts achieved their school’s best results in a competition. Having competed in Gravesend in the South East Regional competition recently, two teams of Weald School gymnasts were selected to represent the region and compete at the British Schools
National Finals in Stoke on Trent. The school said that students trained relentlessly on solo and group floor routines plus vaulting and were all rewarded with great achievements. The under-16s mixed stepped on to the podium to be handed their bronze medals, coming third
out of 16 schools from all around England, Scotland and Wales. They were Holly Blackburn, William Griggs, Ella Hannyngton and Georgie Lamberth. The Under-16 boys team, Toby Davis, Christopher Lammas and Daniel Lewis came sixth out of eight teams in their category. Pix: Jane Amerio

Solar power on way to schools Pupils and staff at West Sussex schools will soon be seeing solar power on tap. Money is being allocated to 48 schools, some in the Horsham district, to install energy converting equipment. It is expected that saving money and reducing carbon emissions are among the benefits West Sussex for schools. West Sussex County Council will invest £3 million in the scheme. It comes after a successful trial eight schools in the county in 2015, including Leechpool Primary in Horsham, Wisborough Green Primary and Rydon Community College in Storrington. Forest School in Horsham is in the next batch, and others will be assessed and announced later. Louise Goldsmith, Leader of West Sussex County Council, said:
“This is excellent news. Installing solar panels across 48 sites will have incredibly positive impact, not only on these schools involved but also on the local economy and the environment. I am proud that West Sussex continues to follow through with its commitment to sustainability.” Working with schools on renewable energy generation was identified as a priority in 2016. It is part of the Action Plan which accompanies the County Council approved Energy Strategy. As well as reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 772 tonnes a year, schools can expect to save £2.2 million over a 25 year period. West Sussex County Council will also benefit. As schools pay no installation or maintenance fees for the panels, they will buy the electricity produced from the coun-
cil for a reduced fee. This will result in a net income of £1.7m across the 25 year time frame. The project even presents a learning opportunity for West Sussex pupils. Witnessing solar power first hand will broaden their understanding of sustainable energy sources. This will be supported by an educational pack which has been developed to complement the scheme. Installation will begin at eight to ten schools within a similar location. Over the course of the year the rest of the county will be included. The decision to install solar panels, which is subject to a call-in period, will be managed by Your Energy Sussex, a County Council-led partnership with local councils and delivered by local, experienced companies.

Hugh gives youngsters a war insight
War veteran Hugh Taylor gave the youngest generation an insight into his experiences. Hugh served in World War Two on HMS Hurworth. As a young man, he fought in the Eastern Mediterranean region. He served in many campaigns, such as the Battle of Sirte, and was torpedoed at sea on HMS Gurkha. Lucky to survive, he went for rest and recuperation in Egypt, arranged morale boosting social events to lift the spirits of the regiment, selecting the music or, as Hugh stated to Farlington School pupils, “my first DJ-ing stint” whilst arranging the chance to meet WRENS and Auxiliary girls from Alexandria. Hugh outlined an adventurous life, joining HMS Hurworth and Operation Pedestal and Operation Husky. Later, Hugh was part of the convoy involved in Churchill’s Dodecanese operation. He was involved in capturing a German submarine at sea, playing an anxious game of cat and mouse and,
finally, being a part of the crew who captured the German submarine sailors. With a ‘make do and mend’ mentality, he rose through the naval ranks from 1941-1945. He met his wifeat a naval ball, and after the war was happily married to Bernadette, training as a solicitor and setting up a successful practice, finally settling in the Horsham area with his family. His daughter Geraldine came to Farlington. Some of the Year 10 girls had lunch with Hugh and his daughter before the talk, discussing the old days of Farlington. The school has been busy on others fronts. Prep 4 visited Fishbourne Roman Palace as an introduction to their ‘Romans’ topic, and a Prep 3 group visited the British Museum Favourite items were the Rosetta Stone, the paintings from Nebamun’s tomb and the mummified animals. Youngsters also took part in Mothers Day celebrations. Some of the activities are pictured.

Top marks for Windlesham House School
Following a recent inspection, by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI), Windlesham pupils’ levels of achievement across a wide range of academic and other disciplines was rated ‘excellent’. The ISI went on to say that the children clearly enjoy being at Windlesham and that it is a busy, purposeful school, offering a strong sense of family. The inspectors noted that, in the Early Years Foundation Stage, children meet or exceed their early learningRope goals and Swinasgsthey s, and, move up the school, pupils make excellent academic progress, acquiring secure work habits and study skills. Chair of Governors, Adam Perry, said: “This is a fantastic achievement and a true reflection of the hard work and high standards of our staff and the children here at Windlesham. We all feel the inspectors have really picked up on the character and ethos of the school. We are committed to the future development of facilities at the school and this is demonstrated by the construction of the new sports centre & swimming pool”. Mr Richard Foster, Headmaster of Windlesham House School, said: “I am delighted that the hard work of pupils, teachers, governors and the wider school community has been recognised by the Independent Schools Inspectorate”. In conclusion, the ISI report stated that the pupils are confident, highly articulate and gain high levels of achievement, because they enjoy being members of a vibrant, happy community which is full of fun and laughter. It was observed that, “when the pupils leave the school, they are properly prepared for the responsibilities, opportunities and experiences of the next chapter in their lives.” A full ISI report is available online.
Does Cocoa Loco Have The Biggest Easter Egg in Horsham? Shoppers who enjoy a wander into, or past, Cocoa Loco will have noticed a huge Chocolate Easter Egg that now has pride of place in the middle of the store. Sarah Payne, owner of Cocoa Loco and her team of chocolatiers, decided to have some fun and see if they could create a huge Easter egg. The result was a giant marbled chocolate egg made with organic and Fairtrade milk, white and dark chocolate. Weighing in at 18.5kg and standing at 75cm tall and 50 cm wide, the enormous Easter egg was created using the
same technique they use to produce their award winning marbled family egg. Sarah Payne said “This egg took us 2 days to craft and was a real team effort. It was such fun to make and we look forward to donating it to Chestnut Tree House so that they can all have fun cracking it and really enjoy this really scrummy chocolate” The egg will remain in store until Saturday the 15th April, so feel free to come and see it for yourself!

one final summer of golf at Gatton Manor....
Over the past 50 years, since it’s opening in the 1960’s, Gatton has built a reputation as a well-respected club, whose members and staff offer a warm welcome to visitors, societies and golf break guests.
“ The whole team at Gatton Manor are committed to making this final season, one to remember. The course was fantastically maintained last year and we will ensure this continues throughout 2017.
However, time moves on and there are big changes afoot at Gatton, with the current owners having recently applied for planning permission to transform the club into state-of-the-art Medispa and wellness resort, making full use of the picturesque setting that the club enjoys.
The greens and fairways are in tip-top condition, and our a tree-clearing programme has allowed more light and air movement onto the course, which in turn has speed up the pace of play”.
As such, the club has announced its plan to close the course in October 2017. While this news is sure to sadden many golf lovers, it does however mean there is one final summer of golf to enjoy, and General Manager Jason Froggatt is determined to go out a high.
Showing no signs of slowing down the club are actively promoting their unique summer membership, as well as a variety of pay and play options and will be hosting two final open competitions for golfers to enjoy.

hopefully add a little extra to the trip. “As pilots we love flying and we enjoyed hosting several of the students in the flight deck – including my son! We also had a very nervous flyer amongst the student group. It was satisfying to spend some time personally talking with her to try to allay her fears, which certainly seemed to help” The Media and Film Studies, Travel and Tourism and Economics group braved a blizzard on
day one, the packed itinerary included visits to tourist spots such as the Empire State Building, Wall Street. On the return leg of the journey the students met movie star Anya Tailor-Joy for selfies at JFK airport. Jonathan Nunns added: “Despite a snowy blizzard on day one, this was a super trip, enthralling and unforgettable for all involved. The students were brilliant, cheerfully stoic, making the most of every moment,
however cold it got. They were fantastic young ambassadors for both the College and the UK. “To be flown home by Jamie’s dad, Captain Findley, was a treat and BA were brilliant, joining students for group photos at JFK, giving us a shout out on the plane and subsequently allowing some of the students
into the cockpit for pictures once back at Gatwick.” Pictures Lesley Hart and Jonathan Nunns.

Patients benefit from fund raising record Caption the Gatwick Dragon Boat team
Fund raisers at St Catherine’s Hospice are celebrating the most successful charity partnership in its history. Workers at Gatwick Airport raised what the charity described as a “staggering” £74,000 for the hospice in a year. St Catherine’s Hospice, based at Crawley but planning a new centre at Pease Pottage, provides end of life care and support to terminally ill people and their families across Crawley, Horsham, East Surrey and Mid Sussex. Last year, Gatwick selected St Catherine’s as its local Charity of the Year and the two- year partnership has already exceeded all expectations, said the hospice. A year in, Gatwick has smashed its fundraising target, thanks to
inventive fundraising activities including auctioning Amoolia Earhart, a decorated cow that stood in the South Terminal; selling discounted old laptops to staff; entering a 15 strong Gatwick’s Airside Operations Team into Tough Mudder; Giving passengers the opportunity to donate to coin globes in airport terminals and launching a £20 staff fundraising spring challenge. Melanie Wrightson, Community Engagement Manager at Gatwick Airport, said: “We’re thrilled that we’ve managed to raise such a fantastic amount for St Catherine’s and would like to thank all our staff for their individual and combined fundraising efforts. St Catherine’s is Gatwick’s local hospice, so we know how vital the
care and support it provides to people in our local community is. It’s a privilege to raise money to help them do this.” Lucy Bowden, Philanthropy Manager at St Catherine’s, said: “It’s been fantastic to engage with local staff at one of the biggest employers in our area, and we can’t thank Gatwick enough for their enthusiasm and incredible support. We’re looking forward to more exciting fundraising activities in the year ahead as our successful partnership goes from strength to strength.” Gatwick’s support helps St Catherine’s be there to provide expert care to local people when life comes full circle. If you’d like to help your local hospice too, please visit: www.stch.org.uk
Spring has well and truly sprung Nature Martin Read There may still be a slight nip in the air, and some cooling breezes, or even the odd gale, and some of the horses are still wearing overcoats, but winter, and not too bad a winter at that, has departed. The clocks have gone forward, with losing an hour in bed but a small price to pay for nature’s bounty that is now all around us. Snowdrops were the customary harbingers, swiftly followed by early daffodils – some already going over - narcissi and hyacinths. Primroses and crocuses abound, rooks are cawing and hopping around among jackdaws and starlings. Magpies are chattering and squirrels seem to have an extra bounce, while bumble bees and butterflies are also stirring, along with rob-
ins, wrens and their less common counterparts. Green and lesser spotted woodpeckers have been foraging on the grass and buzzards, once a rare sight, wheel overhead with geese honking aloft and gracing local ponds. Our part of West Sussex seemed slightly behind the east of the county for lambs – some while ago there were plenty Alfriston way, but they are suckling hereabouts now. And, it is heartening to see the thorn hedgerows greening up below lambs tails bobbling on nut trees and pussy willow in spectacular bud. Some tulips have jumped the queue, others remain to flower and bluebells are well in leaf in the woods. We shall soon be seeing the bright yellow fields of oil seed rape. Although the still brown beech hedges will be dormant for some time yet, rest assured that they will miraculously sprout
bright green in a few week’s time. Meanwhile, the horse chestnut sticky buds are breaking into leaf and willows weeping verdantly. And, this year the blossoms on the ornamental shrubs and trees are really noteworthy. Horsham district always shows off its magnolias to great advantage and this spring they are earlier than ever, courtesy of a benign autumn, a relatively kind winter, a mostly frost free spring and exceptionally high recent temperatures. Perhaps we shall have some secondary late flowering. Local camellias, azaleas and forsythias are stunning, too. So, get out and enjoy the displays if and while you can. There are many uplifting signs of spring in the district but the number and range of blossoms to be seen in Horsham’s Queensway are especially well worth observing, hats off to their gardeners.

Young talent on show in Horsham is based on ‘still life and personal corners’, experiments with the most unlikely of inspirations –
Talented young artists have their work on display at Horsham Museum. Expressions, a display of work by Collyers’s Visual Arts students is now open and runs until May 5. The museum said: “Young minds filled with fresh ideas, free from restrictive boundaries and capable of unleashing some incredible creative expression and new art – this is our youth of today. To celebrate some of this creativity, in conjunction with The College of Richard Collyer, Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum and Art Gallery are delighted to be hosting the fantastic
new exhibition, Expressions: a display of work by Collyer’s Visual Arts students. This fabulous exhibition combines the artistic accomplishments from Collyer’s Visual Arts’ most talented students from BTEC National Diploma in Art and Design, A level Art, Textiles, Graphics and Photography, and has an exciting range of creative photography, sculpture, painting, textiles and graphics inspired by personal memories, holidays and dreams. For instance, A level Photography student Pia Homshaw’s visionary piece, whose photography
monochrome doors, bars and grills – and yet cleverly combines them in geometric shapes, skillfully exploring light and shape to produce an incredibly attractive image, which absorbs and fascinates the viewer. A level Art student Esther Downton, whose work is inspired by her love of the sea, has created a brilliant piece of art out of pieces of driftwood. Brightly coloured strong chains and chunky rope hold the pieces together, but not as we know them – their strength lies in the fact the rope and chains are brilliantly and ex-
quisitely painted onto the pieces of driftwood, and reminds us just how strong an artist this student is to successfully carry off this technique. And BTEC Art is no less inspirational; for instance, Sarah Madeley, whose fashion illustration uses collage and mixed media, has created an image of a dreamlike face of a young lady, adorned by and combined with a collage of flowers and butterflies. It harks back to the fantasy of Titania, Queen of the Fairies in Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, and yet the overall finish is totally on trend with today’s most modern gallery artists. All three courses at Collyer’s give the opportunity for these students to see ‘the arts’ as a vibrant and working part of their community, through projects with NADFAS, the Samaritans, Horsham Hospital, Southern Rail and Horsham Rotary Club – and now with Horsham Museum and Art Gallery. The youth of today, inspirational, visionary and creative may well be the artists of tomorrow – come along and see for yourself.” Horsham Museum and Art Gallery is open Monday to Saturday 10-5pm, admission is free. Pictured are some of the students and work.

PMW celebrates Education Resource Awards win Billingshurst based PMW Communications was delighted to have received Highly Commended at the recent Education Resource Awards. The full-service marketing agency was recognised in the Marketing Campaign of the Year category for the Ambition Unlimited initiative it created for a school in the Midlands. The campaign encouraged students to aim higher than they thought possible and helped the school increase its intake by 40%. It also changed the perception the local community had of the school and Ambition Unlimited’s positive impact was mentioned by Ofsted in its recent report. Peter Sutton, Managing Director of PMW Communica-
tions, commented: “We pride ourselves on creating campaigns for our cleints that are specifically tailored to their requirements and we’re all thrilled the hardwork our team put in (to making the Ambition Unlimied campaign a success) has been recognised. It had tremendous results for the school and really highlighted what creative marketing can achieve.” The prestigious Education Resource Awards 2017 recognised and celebrated the outstanding contributions suppliers and teaching professionals make to the education sector throughout the UK. The awards ceremony took place last month at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham
Hair brained Wisdom - and a close shave for Peter! Business Martin Read Peter Evans, Associate Director at Horsham’s Wisdom Recruitment Services has made a clean breast of it – enduring a chest waxing. Not to be recommended, but Peter quipped to the District Post: “I’m the token male at work and when it was put to me at our office Christmas party it seemed a good idea at the time – it must have been later than I thought! But, it’s great to be supporting such an exceptionally good cause and one so close to Tara’s heart.” Colleague Tara Woodford, Senior Recruitment Manager at Wisdom has the best possible reason for raising funds – for the Evelina Children’s Hospital – saying: “They saved my daughter’s life. They were absolutely brilliant and although I can never thank them enough, I want to donate as much as possible to aid their research and development so that they can continue to help more children and parents.” The Evelina – now a specialist NHS Children’s Hospital - was founded in 1869 by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild after his wife Evelina and their child had died in premature labour. Tara’s daughter Joanna was just six weeks old when she contracted severe breathing difficulties, Tara continuing: “It was Jojo’s first Christmas and, after arriving with a good birth weight, she had been doing really well – until she
caught a cold, which soon escalated into blocked lungs. I took her to the surgery and our doctor was very concerned. He referred her to East Surrey Hospital, where she was given oxygen and induced into a coma. But, when she didn’t make the hoped for progress a transfer was arranged to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Evelina in the St Thomas’s complex near Westminster Bridge and they came to East Surrey to collect her. The amazing Evelina team worked on Jojo all the way to London and when we got there we were greeted by a huge medical team who managed to stabilise her quite quickly. The treatment continued for two weeks, including administering chest massages and cystic fibrosis drugs and Jojo finally came off the machines on Boxing Day. The Evelina could not have been any more dedicated and caring – while Jojo was receiving five star treatment, we were given A1 support, too. Viruses, a collapsed lung and a bacterial infection ensued, so, it was far from plain sailing, a truly frightening experience. But, we got Jojo home with us on New Year’s Eve, when we celebrated our belated Christmas. Fortunately, she is not showing any lasting effects and is now beautiful and funny at two years and four months old. We cannot ever adequately repay the Evelina, but I’m determined to do what I can to contribute to
their projects and am delighted that Peter has agreed to have his chest denuded as part of my fund raising!” Tara and Peter have demanding roles at the independent Wisdom Recruitment Services in Horsham’s North Street, where they specialise in providing a superior, professional and confidential service, finding the right positions for candidates and clients alike – connecting the most talented recruitment consultants to the best agencies for whom to work in Sussex, Surrey, Kent and Essex. A glance at the glowing testimonials on Wisdom’s website - www.wisdomrecruitment. co.uk – confirms their expertise. Tara, born in Horsham Hospital, has pledged £2,500 to the Evelina and is approaching the half way mark, but hopes to be able to write a cheque for £5,000. She has arranged coffee mornings and various other fund raising activities and is entered for next year’s London Marathon, summing up with: “Many thanks to Mooeys of South Street, Horsham for waxing Peter and, especially, to everyone who has contributed so far. And, I’d love to hear from anybody else who’d like to help me get to my target – I can be reached at tara@ wisdomrecruitment.co.uk - 01403 243722 (office) or 07905 118745 and donations can be made via http://uk.virginmoneygiving. com/TARAWOODFORD”

Horsham’s Great Big Bunny Hunt
As part of Horsham’s Easter celebrations, which include the town’s eleventh fantastic Piazza Italia Festival which will take place on Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Easter Monday …. many Town Centre businesses will hold a Bunny Hunt during the remainder of the school holidays. The rabbits are so delighted to be coming back to Horsham for the eighth year running, and are already preparing for their
Blake coming to Horsham
With Brit Award winners BLAKE fresh from recent appearances on the Graham Norton show, Strictly Come Dancing & The One Show, the British harmony trio present a brand new tour and will be performing on stage at The Capitol on Saturday 15 April at 8pm. Featuring the finest songs from stage and screen, with projections and lighting that bring the cinematic magic to life, linked together with the boys famous improvised banter, the show features music from Hans Zimmer, Ennio Morricone, Leonard Bernstein, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Leonard Cohen, The Beach boys and many more. hop-in on Saturday 8 April. They will stay in Horsham until Sunday April 23. Accompanied pre-teenage Children can visit a range of Shops and draw ‘Find the Carrot’ Cards to discover whether they have won a little treat and then find which Bunny is hiding in that Shop ! The children will enter the Bunny’s Name onto a form..... and then stand a chance of winning cash prizes of up to £40. This activity is organised by the Rotary Club
of Horsham in partnership with Horsham District Council and participation is free to the Children. ATOM have kindly sponsored the activity. Entry Forms will be available at participating shops, downloadable from the Rotary Club of Horsham Facebook Page and other local websites, social media forums, and published in the local press. The Great Easter Bunny Hunt is a marvellous event for ALL the family…as Tony & Pat from Wiltshire wrote last year “we have just returned from Horsham after a few days “grandparenting”. Our daughter pointed out the ‘Easter Bunny Hunt’ as an activity for our ‘soon to be’ five year old granddaughter and so on Wednesday we set off around Horsham with our granddaughter and her younger brother in tow. We were amazed and delighted by how extremely friendly all the shopkeepers and shop assistants were to our young charges. Without exception they gave of their time (and sweets) to our granddaughter. Such a welcoming and vibrant town centre. To the organisers and participants in the scheme should go a lot of praise”.
Perfect Easter family treat at The Capitol Izzy wizzy let’s get busy! Brand-new, with guaranteed giggles for the whole family, The Sooty Show will be on stage at The Capitol on Monday 17 April at 11am and 2.30pm. Direct from CITV, Sooty, Sweep and Soo head into town accompanied by TV’s Richard Cadell. MrSlater has put Richard in charge of running the show but nothing is going to plan! Sooty’s magic tricks turn very messy and Sweep’s escapology act has him all tied up. Maybe Soo and her tap dancing will
save the day? With special guest stars Butch and Ramsbottom. Expect magic, music and mayhem with buckets full of audience participation. A spectacular treat for Sooty fans old and new – plus a chance to meet Richard and Sooty after the show! “Works like a dream – your children will love it” – The Guardian “Absolutely Brilliant” – netmums Tickets are available online: www.thecapitolhorsham.com or via the Box Office: 01403 750220

Quirky Quintessential Englishness at its Best: The Floral Fringe Fair 2017 The Floral Fringe Fair 2017 is taking place on the weekend of June 3 and 4 at Knepp Castle, Shipley. Live musicians will play at the event, which organisers describe as ‘quirky and eclectic’. The theme will be British wildlife with a vintage twist. Specialising in quality stalls from Sussex, Surrey, Kent and Hampshire, stallholder craftsmen and women will offer first hand knowledge of the products on sale - new and vintage. Visitors to the fair will have the chance to spot free-roaming cattle, sheep, ponies, geese and deer, which may have young. Well behaved dogs (for whom there are a number of stalls, providing dog treats, handmade collars and leads) will be welcomed, but must be on lead at all times. The fair has become something of a foodie’s favourite. Organisers suggest visitors bring a ‘vintage picnic basket and rug’ and add to them ingredients bought from the street food stalls. There are various picnic spots by the lake. Alternatively, a pop-up tearoom will be available, for those who choose not to picnic. Knepp Castle is the subject of an unusual and nationally important re-wilding project and there will
be the chance to learn more about this at the fair. Wildlife safaris have recently been launched on the estate and there is a wellequipped luxury campsite. Event details: Floral Fringe Fair to be held on the weekend of June 3 and 4 (between 10.30am and 5pm) at Knepp Castle, Shipley, Nr Horsham, West Sussex RH13 8LJ. Entry is £6.50 per person, £1.00 for children under 14 and children under 4 free. If arriving in a classic or vintage pre-1975 vehicle, entry is £5.50 each for the first two occupants. Classic and vintage vehicles will have a specially allocated parking area. If in such a vehicle, dressing in appropriate fashion is especially encouraged. Even if not arriving in a classic car, dressing in style is welcome. Please note: Many stall holders do not have card facilities to accept payments. To find out more about Knepp Castle, and for directions to the event, please vist: www.knepp. co.uk. Local incentive to give stoolball a boost Stoolball Dave Snith - Sports Editor The newly formed Horsham District Stoolball Association is aiming to promote and invigorate all forms of stoolball in the area in various formats - mixed, ladies and juniors - to hopefully increase local participation in the sport. Stoolball is a unique and exciting striking and fielding sport containing aspects that resemble cricket, baseball and rounders and has a long local history stretching back over 500 years with Sussex gener-
ally regarded as its region of origin as well as its modern day heartland. Stoolball England has been helping Horsham District Council with its ‘Playing Pitch Strategy’, a survey of sports fields that is carried out every 10 to 15 years. As part of this exercise, Stoolball England reported that a number of village and town teams have been lost in the area over the last 20 years The HDSA seeks to re-establish stoolball in the villages of Ashington, Billingshurst, Cowfold, Henfield, Southwater, Thakeham, Upper Beeding and West Chiltington as
Stoolball at Horsham Cricket Ground
well as Horsham. Initiatives will include supporting Horsham Rotary Club’s popular Set4Success charity inter-business stoolball tournament in June, helping with the annual Horsham Primary Schools Stoolball Festival at Horsham Cricket Club and promoting Broadbridge Heath Stoolball Club’s successful Junior Academy. Any individuals or organisations that wish to try out stoolball or start up a team in the Horsham District should contact the Acting Secretary, Richard Emsley, richard@stoolball.org.uk.

Barns Green reflect on their Indian summer tour Barns Green CC’s Bill Bailey bowling in India
Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Since touring Barbados in 2000, Barns Green Cricket Club were keen to repeat the experience – but this time making the most of the Indian connections of members at the club. And, they have just completed a highly successful tour to Kerala in the south of the sub-continent, Club Captain Chris Bailey telling the District Post: “Apart from the amazing food, stifling heat and superb beaches we played eight games of cricket, too, a mix of adult and junior games, which in ten days presented a massive challenge for the club. Our base was St Xaviers College, Trivandrum – a beautiful place but markedly different from the soft green wickets of West Sussex. Getting acclimatised to low,
skiddy pitches took a while but we turned in some good individual performances, including fifties from Martin Hennock and Guy Duhig and, among his other scalps, a four wicket spell from Danny Conway. Will Currie and Adam Rice also featured strongly with the bat, as did Russ Parkes, Chris “Shaka” Shambrook and Bill Bailey with the ball, ensuring competitiveness.” The Keralan Academy Coach ran a session for the juniors, Chris Bailey continuing: “That was excellent, enabling our rising stars Matt and Nick Cooper and Conor Blanchard to develop their skills and although we’d have liked to have won the series everyone benefited enormously. Cricket in India is so fanatical – it was incredible to see their dedication and will to win.” A total of 56 people, including 12 juniors and 20 supporters, went
on the tour, Shaka Shambrook, a veteran of cricket in 12 countries, saying: “This was extremely well organised and most enjoyable, making us plenty of new friends.” And, there was much more than just cricket, with visits to Kanyakumari in the southern tip of India, Western Ghats stunning mountain hill fort, beaches at Kovalam in the Arabian Sea, the ancient trading centre at Poovar and the richest Hindu temple (with an estimated $22 billion worth of gold and jewels stored in underground vaults) at Padmanabhaswamy. Chris Bailey summed up with: “We couldn’t have asked for a better all-round experience and we’re already thinking of another Asian tour for next year, perhaps to somewhere else in India or to Sri Lanka.” Barns Green CC is a proper, long standing village club in a pleasant setting - a popular venue with visiting sides enjoying hospitality in the community atmosphere of the Sports and Sociable pavilion at the ground. The club seniors have won both the local knockout Mirfield Cup, while the U13 side have also carried off their Sussex Cup. On mid-week summer evenings the club is a hive of coaching activity and any player – adult or colt – interested in joining the club is assured of a warm welcome – christopher.bailey18@ hotmail.com. Hawks battle Spartans in high scoring shoot out Hawks won at Spartans
U14 Shoreham Spartans 73 – 85 U14 Horsham Hawks Junior Basketball The Horsham Hawks claimed their tenth win of the season in a high scoring shoot out against the Shoreham Spartans. An 8-3 Hawks surge to start the contest was provided by Harry
Rose and some clinical fast break basketball well executed by Fin Bennett. The Spartans however took advantage of some temporary Horsham defensive frailties to put to together a 15-4 response of their own and edge ahead 20-12. Following a Hawks time out Josh Tavolieri put together six straight points to steady the ship before Horsham
found themselves behind 24-18 at the end of the first quarter. In a game of runs it was the Hawks turn next with back to back scores from Miguel Venturini and a game tying shot from Anaya Wakefield. Further scores from Bennett and Charlotte Willcox and Oliver Brooker extended the Horsham advantage to 39-31 at the half as the visitor’s regained control. As the third quarter began two converted free throws from Rose were followed by ten straight points from Joshua Lea-Clayton including consecutive three point baskets as the Hawks continued to build on their lead. Another ten straight points, this time from Tavolieri closed the quarter with the Hawks firmly ahead 67-54. Two scores from Joshua MasonLovett and another six points from Lea-Clayton opened the final period for Horsham. Despite another strong Spartan fight back that brought them to within nine points with less than a minute to go, it was Bennet who provided the knockout blow with a deep corner three ending any chance of a comeback. A final jumper shot from Anaya Wakefield sealed the 85-73 Hawks victory.

Joggers relay teams well placed at Christs Hospital Athletics Phil Liberman - Horsham Joggers Horsham Joggers took part in the Sussex Road Relays at Christs Hospital School. This event involves teams of 6 or 4 men or 3 women each completing a 2 mile lap of the school grounds in a race. In this high ranking event Horsham Joggers’ A team consisting of Richard Lee Wright, Matthew Anstee Brown, Harry Wilcox, Mal Thornton, Raff Vitale and Matt Mason finished a very creditable 16th out of the 23 teams. In the Veterans category Simon Perkins, Neil Boniface, Steve Wigmore and Pete O’Connell picked up a bronze medal, finishing 3rd out
of the 13 teams. Also, in the Mens 60s, Keith Valentine, Steve Wilson and John Dykes came home 7th out of the 14 teams. Finally the ladies also acquitted themselves admirably with the V40s of Janine Littler, Ali Gormely and Val Purnell finishing 12th out of 15 and the V50s of Miranda Huisman, Diane Ferguson and Lorraine Treadwell crossing the line 5th out of 14. Elsewhere, a small contingent took part in the Paddock Wood Half Marathon with Neil Boniface continuing his fine start with a 1st place in the V40 category and a 2nd overall in 1.08.48. He was followed by Finbarr Cotter and Andy Jefford who finished in 2.04.00 and 2.16.17 respectively.

Canine Partners at Cottesmore a howling success Ladies Golf There was a tempting glimpse of summer for Cottesmore’s Lady Captain’s Charity Day. The 18-hole team competition, where the best 2 out of 3 scores counted, was won convincingly by Jill Lewis, Hazel Brown and Valerie Keating with 85 points. Second on countback was Iona McKean, Peggy Beadell and Julie Lintern with Margaret Brice, Jenny Dixon and Brenda Williams third, both with 81 points. The Thursday individual 9-hole ‘Joker’ competition was won by Kate Corbett with 16 points from Ann Jeffries and the weekend ‘Joker’ competition was won convincingly by Pat Johns with 41 points from Jenny Frei. However, the big winner of the week was Captain Margaret Swatman’s chosen charity for 2017, Canine Partners. The charity aims to transform the lives of people with physical disabilities by partnering them with assistance dogs. Their amazing dogs bring a greater independence and quality of life to their partners, offering security, companionship, and practical help with everyday household
New season Grays and Kookaburra hockey in stock. Canterbury & Gilbert rugby boots and protective gear in stock. Updating of annual cups and awards engraved on-site
tasks. These life-changing dogs also provide psychological and social benefits including increased independence, confidence, social interaction and self-esteem. Malcolm Wells from Canine Partners came to the club with a demo team of Adele and her owner/handler, Jackie. The ladies and guests were treated to Malcolm’s entertaining and informative presentation and a flawless performance by Adele who showed how the dogs help with undressing, opening (and closing) doors and unloading the washing machine as well as general retrieving with an always wagging tail! When Margaret first went to the Canine Partners HQ in Midhurst last year, she found this demonstration really powerful; coupled with stories told by some of the partners themselves, they convinced her this was a worthwhile charity to support. With the fees for these competitions going to her charity fund, Margaret’s total has already reached a magnificent £1200, and she is only ten weeks into her captaincy year.

Horsham storm through to their eleventh final Suzy Clapp hit the equaliser
Sussex Cup Semi Final Lewes Ladies 2 - 4 Horsham Ladies Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Ladies romped through to another cup final - at Lewes’ Southdown Sports Club.
Since the 2001-2 season, the ladies have previously appeared in eleven of the 14 finals, winning nine. To put Horsham’s ascendancy into perspective, in that period Eastbourne have won two finals and the only other clubs to triumph – Brighton, Chichester and East Grinstead – have each succeeded in one. Lewes may be in a lower league
but they had home advantage and were not disgraced, opening the scoring when they broke away, catching Horsham’s defence by surprise. But, Louisa Denman equalised, the score remaining 1-1 at the break. However, the second half unquestionably belonged to Horsham, Suzy Clapp putting the ladies ahead before Denman increased the lead to 3-1. Lewes, though, kept pushing and were rewarded with another goal, but that was the end of their aspirations. Alicia Remfry then twisted the knife with Horsham’s fourth goal, putting them through to Finals Day against East Grinstead – one of the only two teams able to overcome Horsham in a final - at their Saint Hill complex on Saturday May 6. Ecstatic Horsham Ladies’ Team Manager Jane Denman told the District Post: “This was a good game, a proper semi-final and, now that our league programme has been completed it’s great to crown our season with another Finals Day appearance! Lewes played well but we put in a good team performance and were worthy winners.”
Hornets suffer narrow defeat in Surrey Tony Nwachukwu’s goal was not enough to prevent defeat
Ryman League Division One
South Chipstead 2 – 1 Horsham Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor
Horsham failed to capitalise on their recent run of form as they narrowly lost at Chipstead. Played in teeming rain, and with the home side scoring a goal in the opening minutes, the match never really got going and was by no means a classic. The win meant more to the home side as the three points

gained have certainly guaranteed Ryman League football for the Surrey team next season. With a few minutes played Ollie Twum ran onto a superb through ball from Karl Parker before finding the top corner of Josh Pelling’s net. In an attempt to reply, Alfie Rogers headed over the crossbar and Tony Nwachukwu had one of his tricky runs that came to nothing. Just before the break Horsham gave their hosts a scare when Lewis Hyde’s corner evaded everyone when the slightest of touches would have produced an equal-
iser. If Dom Di Paola was hoping his half time talk would bring positive results he was proved wrong for as with the first half his side conceded an early goal. Chris O’Flaherty’s teasing cross was met by the unmarked Dan Cumber who placed his header past Pelling. Di Paola sent on James Thurgar for Scott Kirkwood and the change nearly paid off immediately. Thurgar ghosted past three defenders and picked out Steve Metcalf who in turn found Tom Lawley who blasted well wide from a good position. The miss was atoned for just a minute later however when the lively Nwachukwu took full advantage of mass confusion in the Chipstead defence to slot the ball into an unguarded net. Half chances fell to both sides in the closing minutes but despite Chipstead finishing with 10 players after the needless sending off for Matt Warren Horsham was unable to grab an equaliser and remain in 14th place while Chipstead climb to 19th. Horsham will still have hopes of a top half finish - and Di Paola will be pushing them to that goal - so this Saturday’s (April 8) ‘long haul’ to Guernsey will be seen as an opportunity for 3 more points. However, Guernsey still requires one more win to be safe from relegation, so it will be no push over.
Green & Whites shaded in last knockings London 2 South East Deal & Betteshanger 19 - 17 Horsham Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham’s long coach trip to east Kent to play Deal & Betteshanger at the Drill Field in the former Royal Marine barracks complex at Canada Road, Walmer, went down to the wire, the hosts winning by a whisker, pushing them up to eighth, a little further from the relegation zone. Horsham’s Joe Wilde scored a try after ten minutes, converted by Captain Tom Johnson, then George Palmer also got across the line to give Horsham a 12-7 lead at the break. Canice Gonzague completed another try in the 72nd minute, crucially the kick going begging, as had an earlier penalty, before
Deal & Betteshanger stole the points with a try at the death. Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker told the District Post: “It wasn’t a high quality game, but we did score three great tries and showed we could play. They are a very experienced older team, whereas we had six highly promising teenagers on the park, and, being threatened with the drop, Deal & Betteshanger had more to lose than we did. They desperately needed to win and unfortunately we couldn’t retain possession for long enough, putting in a rather stuttering display really.” Tomorrow (Saturday) in the final round of league matches of the season, Horsham, still sixth, are on the road to Kent again – against fifth-placed Beckenham – whom they were overturned by the narrowest of margins - 15-16 - in September’s home fixture.
Heath add to Wick’s relegation worries SCFL Premier Division Wick 1 - 2 Broadbridge Heath Football Heath Manager Steve Painter welcomed back a host of players and a new signing for the trip to Wick. Shaun Findlay, Dan Sandell, Andy Howard and Rob Godfrey all returned to the squad and Painter was also forced to move quickly to replace Ollie Moore who left the club on deadline day, by bringing in Curtis Griffin on loan from Burgess Hill. Heath started well and came close to taking the lead in the 10th minute when Sandell combined well with Findlay who whipped in a low left wing cross to Griffin and his first time effort flew just wide of the post. Sandell was again involved minutes later when he found Tim Martin who hit a shot that the Wick keeper Lewis Boughton did well to push wide of the post; from the resulting Sandell corner Stuart Chester rose above everyone to head narrowly wide. The hosts came close on 25 minutes when Andy Chick tried a right footed curler that went close, then minutes later from a corner Joe Gromett was unlucky with a glancing header that went
straight to ‘keeper Chester. Within 2 minutes of the second half Heath finally broke the deadlock and it was Findlay again who was the creator when he beat 3 defenders before picking out Tim Martin who slotted in from 8 yards. The hosts rallied and the lively Rob Hutchins continued to cause the Heath defence problems and he almost equalised after one run ended with a shot that went into the side netting. Wick did equalise however on 71 minutes when fullback Jack Bingham collected the ball and hammered a low shot into the bottom right corner, a strike any forward would be proud of. Wick continued to push players forward in search of the victory they needed to help them fight off the threat of relegation but they were punished when Jamal Sultan broke away down the right and picked out Heath fullback Jamie Robinson who hammered the ball into the roof of the net from close range to kill off the game. Painter was pleased with his team’s performance saying, “It wasn’t an easy game. They put us under a lot of pressure in the second half, although I felt much of that was our own fault by defending too deeply but I’m pleased with the points.”

Heath shade YM in gritty derby replay Heath overcame YM in the controversial replay
SCFL Premier Division Horsham YMCA 0 - 1 Broadbridge Heath Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter This game was a replay of the January 3 encounter, a fixture controversially abandoned at the death with Broadbridge Heath leading 2-1 and YMCA goalkeeper Sam Smith seriously injured after he had been launched into just before Heath scored their abortive decider. With no bearing on promotion or relegation, neither side were enthusiastic about playing the game again, yet, after the league insisted on the rematch, both desperately wanted to win. Heath triumphed by
the narrowest of margins – despite a thorough first half examination when YM’s wave of attacks put Heath’s defence under pressure, Dan Evans’ shooting wide before Sam Schaaf fired over and Phil Johnson broke through to no avail. Lively YM created real opportunities, but Heath’s defence held secure, busy keeper Michael Chester looking safe in goal. Heath also had their moments, hitting the side netting and having a corner kicked off the line, but the first half ended goal-less. Heath though got on the score sheet soon after the break when Dan Sandell tapped in a cross. Then, a Sean Findlay attempt flew past the post, but YM kept pressing – a free kick and two corners evaporating, Stuart Chester twice
blocking forays. Both sides had unrewarded corners and Jake Holmes went on a fruitless Heath run ahead of three YM corners and a late attempt ballooning over just before the final whistle, YM Manager Peter Buckland saying: “What a bizarre season we’re having! We had so many chances and could have been three or four up at the break, but Heath deserved to win after their strong second half.” Heath boss Steve Painter added: “We were chasing shadows early on but had more energy later, running everything down.” Tomorrow (Saturday) YM are at home again – for their third Gorings Mead fixture in a week – against high flying Chichester City, while Heath travel to hapless Hailsham.

Ecstatic Boro promoted to highest ever level! London 3 South East Park House 20 - 20 Pulborough Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter
find us on facebook horsham.news
Hearty congratulations to Pulborough after they ensured their promotion to the London SE2 league, the first time they have got through to such elevated company. Needing just one point for promotion they did it the hard way, drawing with lowly Park House courtesy of a penalty at the death. But, let’s not be grudging, Boro are one of the smaller clubs in the league yet, with one game to go, they have scored 681 points – more than any other club and, in a long hard season, won 17 of their 21 fixtures. So, they are worthy of promotion – rightly described by Club Captain Guy Baxter as: “A fantastic achievement, we’ve just ticked off our last few games one by one – early season we were looking for a top four finish, so we’re absolutely thrilled to realise a big dream!” Gareth Powell from Boro’s back row scored an early try, followed by another from winger Will Scrase – neither converted - and although Boro trailed, the game was still up
for grabs at the break. The other winger, Brad Game got over in the second half, Frazer Oliphant-Hope obliging with the extras, but a rare Boro defeat beckoned until Frazer calmly slotted home a penalty with the last play of the match, confirming Boro’s nailbiting promotion. Guy Baxter told the District Post: “That was a frustrating game for us! We really should have won it, perhaps we were a bit complacent, but Park House are old school and burly. A heavy shower of rain made handling difficult – they played the conditions better. We nearly made a hash of it, so a wakeup call might be what we need to pep us up for our final game tomorrow (Saturday) against Lewes at home. We’d love to go out with a bang by carrying off the league, but we’re likely to need a four try bonus point victory – Haywards Heath will probably do that in their match against Gillingham Anchorians and Heath are breathing down our necks just one point adrift and with a superior points difference.” Lewes, erstwhile powerhouse of Sussex rugby, are fifth and Boro beat them 5-33 in East Sussex on the opening day of the season.
Pulborough’s promotion gives them their highest ever ranking
Osborne battles on at Donington Park Sam Osborne racing at Donington Park
Photo by Gavin Elliott Motorcycling Elayne Nunan - Sports Reporter The sun shone at Donington Park for the second round of the Thundersport GB Championship but bike issues gave Sam Osborne other battles to focus on. Qualifying didn’t go to plan, as problems with Sam’s Suzuki GSX-
R1000 K9 hampered progress and he qualified 19th. But in Race 1, after some attention to the bike, Sam got a flying start and was running first in his class, GP1 Sportsman, and 8th overall, including the faster class also racing. For 10 laps Sam continued to push but then with just two laps to go, out-braking himself
at the Foggy Esses chicane caused him to run on across the gravel. He then had to turn round and wait to re-join the race, costing him his potential win and setting him back to 4th in class and 17th overall. On Sunday Race 2 was ‘a nightmare start’ and Sam lost several places, but picked his way through the pack to finish 6th in class, 18th overall. In Race 3 Sam finished 5th in class, 15th overall, and takes his points forward to Snetterton in three weeks [30-31 April]. Sam, 25, from Billingshurst, said: ‘I’ve still got a lot to learn – the 1000cc is a big step up from the 600cc last season – and the bike needs time spent on it, but it was an enjoyable weekend, I had some good battles too with my team mate and another rider.’ Sam’s sponsors include MSG Racing & Dyno, West Sussexbased Lane Motorsport, and Carl Blake of Blake’s Grooming in West Chiltington and any others interested in sponsoring Sam contact him on: its_ozzy@ hotmail.co.uk
YM and Town play out an entertaining draw SCFL Premier Division Horsham YMCA 2 - 2 Eastbourne Town Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor As the season draws to a close, Horsham YMCA and Eastbourne Town played out a remarkably entertaining draw at Gorings Mead. The result mattered nothing in terms of promotion or relegation but it gave Town a point towards their personal battle to finish higher than their rivals Eastbourne United. Town started the better and had numerous efforts on Mark Fox’s goal with YM defender Guy Harding performing wonders in the air to repel the constant barrage of balls into the area. The defence was finally breached on 23 minutes when Jason Taylor latched onto Aaron Capon’s through ball before firing past Fox. As the match progressed
YM came more into it and although the game flowed from end to end the visitors still retained more of the ball and had the better of the chances. 5 minutes after the restart YM were level when defensive rock Harding turned attacker by heading home Mark Cave’s free kick. The goal boosted YM and they reversed the trend to dominate the play. Chances fell to Harry Shipton and Sam Schaaf before YM took the lead for the first time in the match. After Phil Johnson was hauled down in the area with just over an hour played, Dan Evans stepped up to place the spot kick beyond the diving ‘keeper Greg Nessling. The goal spurred Town and they then took back control of the match resulting in an equaliser with 8 minutes remaining scored by Ryan Cooper who headed in a corner. The final minutes were hectic but the match ended a draw, which in the end was affair result.
