Horsham District’s students

celebrate A Level results

West Sussex County Council gave a statement last Thurdsay, in line with the release of A-Level results. In the statement, the council explained that a new system this year meant that, for some subjects, “students will have taken their Alevel exams at the end of two years of study, instead of sitting modular

Congratulations to all the students and schools who have worked so hard to secure these results exams throughout the duration of their course. AS Level results no longer count towards A Level grades.” According to early reports provided by West Sussex schools and academies with sixth forms: young people continue to perform well at A Level; A Level grades for A*-E this year are slightly above the national average.

The changes to the A Level system mean results are not directly comparable with previous years and this may have a bearing on the overall published results. West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, Richard Burrett, said: “Congratulations to all the students and schools who have worked so hard to secure these results. I wish them all the very best of luck in their next step, whether that is higher education, training or employment.” Mr Burrett also reassured students, who may be disappointed with their results, that support is available and added: “For some students there will be the fantastic news of having done better than expected, but there may be some who are disappointed that their results are not what they had hoped for or needed. We would advise students not to panic, but to take the advice and support from their school or college, do their research and consider all options before deciding on the next step.” Last week’s results are provisional until the Department for Education issues more detailed examination results later in the year, once figures have been confirmed.

Chimes Changing at Christ’s Hospital Don’t let A new silence has swept across Christ’s Hospital School’s campus, echoing that of London without the chimes of Big Ben. Christ’s Hospital has switched off the electronic bell system so now, apart from the chiming of the grand clock on Big School and the Chapel bell, the pupils’ daily routine is no longer interrupted by a shrill ring. Deputy Head, Jon Perriss said: ‘’We decided to switch off all the bells in the boarding houses last term – for example the 7.15 rising bell woke all the pupils up - and around the campus for change of lessons and breaks. Bells add to the sense of routine and familiarity, but we wanted to avoid falling into the trap of Pavlov’s ‘conditioning’ experiment. We were interested to see how the pupils would react in an environment without auditory reminders, as they will need to be prepared for a sense of the world without bells. “As with any change, there were some initial noises of disquiet, but this quickly settled down and both pupils and staff now cannot remember a time when there were bells to orchestrate their every move. Everyone knows the time they need to be in certain places – house roll calls, lessons, meals – and they just get there without fuss.” Apart from the traditional chiming clock in the Quad and

the Chapel bell, the new regime helps pupils and staff to value silence. Jon added: “It’s quite inspiring not having a modern ‘device’ breaking through the sense of grace and calmness around the School. We are fortunate to live and work in a beautiful campus; surroundings that are enhanced by peace. We live in a busy and environmentally noisy world – a school without a piercing bell is quite refreshing.” The original architect for the Elizabeth Tower, housing

end of the Palace of Westminster, was former Christ’s Hospital pupil, Augustus Pugin, in the 19th Century.

your batteries cause a blaze West Sussex residents are being urged to think before they throw away batteries. An increasing number are showing up in the county’s household rubbish, and they all present a fire risk. We have seen a number of fires from batteries or electrical goods over the years, in refuse trucks, and at our waste facilities. With levels going up, especially smaller batteries, the waste and recycling contractors for West Sussex have both flagged their concerns to the County Council. Cabinet Member for the Environment, Deborah Urquhart said: “Any battery has the potential to spark and it can happen so easily; they only need to be damaged or crushed in the truck that collects your waste or your recycling, or at the sites where we process your waste.” “Our recycling trucks are full of dry materials like paper and card, so you can imagine how easily they could catch light. It doesn’t take much, a piece of foil, a staple, even the metal floor of the truck; they can all cause a battery to short.” To find your nearest battery recycling point at a shop or supermarket near where you live, please visit the following link and enter your postcode: https://www. recyclenow.com/local-recycling

Fly-tipping in Horsham district leads to £1000 bill for Hove man Welcoming the conviction, Cabinet Member for Waste Recycling and Cleansing, Cllr Philip Circus, said: “The district council has a zero tolerance approach to environmental crime, such as fly-tipping, and as this successful conviction proves, we will actively pursue offenders and prosecute

Clearing up after fly-tippers alone, costs the council some £80,000 a year

Example of countryside Fly-tipping Horsham District Council has worked in partnership with Sussex Police to successfully convict a Hove man for fly-tipping items of controlled waste in the Horsham district. Mr Essam Bakarat of Hove attended Court on 28 July 2017 for failing to comply with duties under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 in April 2016. Mr Barakat admitted that he had failed to prevent a contravention by an-

other person and was ordered to pay £500 through a Compensation Order, for failing to secure that the transfer of controlled waste was to an authorised person. them accordingly. “Clearing up after fly-tippers alone, costs the council some £80,000 a year. “This particular case represents our commitment to tackling this practice and sends out a clear message to those who act illegally. “We openly encourage the general public to report any instances to us, so that our enforcement team can investigate them.” If you wish to report an instance of fly-tipping, please contact Horsham District Council on 01403 733144 or visit horsham. gov.uk.

Horsham couple ordered to pay costs for abusing disabled man A man and a woman have been found guilty of verbally abusing a severely disabled man in Horsham. The victim cannot walk unaided and needs crutches and a mobility scooter to get around. In January 2017, he was with a friend and they went shopping, but when they returned home, a car was blocking his way and he could not get by in his scooter. This is a problem that he had experienced previously. As they stood there, Graham Sinclair (28) and Cheryl Peterson (28), both from Birches Road, Horsham, yelled verbal abuse from a window, related to the man’s disability and claimed he was not disabled. The victim did not know the couple. Following the incident, a number of people came to check on the victim. Following a trial at Horsham Magistrates’ Court, the couple were both found guilty of a public order offence, although they were acquitted of two other charges of assault by battery. Sinclair was fined £450, while Peterson was fined £120. Both were ordered

to pay £300 in costs. The fines were increased due to the fact that they had shouted abuse about the victim’s disability. David Packer, Crown Prosecution Service, said: “The language used in this case was foul and abusive and made clear reference to the victim’s disabilities. This level of hostility made it a disability hate crime, which meant the perpetrators in this case received a larger fine than they would otherwise have done. “Put simply, the criminal justice system will not tolerate crimes of this nature and anyone responsible for a hate crime - be it on grounds of disability, religion, race, age or sexual orientation - needs to understand that.” Tackling hate crime is one of the priorities for CPS South East, which serves Kent, Surrey and Sussex, with the aim to promote successful convictions on hate crimes. More information about their work on hate crime, including other convictions, can be found at their website: www.cps.gov. uk/southeast|@cpsuk

Farlington’s A Level Success Farlington A Level students celebrated a 100% pass rate after results were announced last week. Ms Louise Higson, Farlington’s Headmistress, commented: “Another successful year for Farlington! With a 100% pass rate, the hard work and commitment of the girls have been well rewarded; there is much cause for celebration. University destinations include Bath, Reading, Surrey and The Royal Veterinary College, with girls

studying courses ranging from English Literature to Veterinary Medicine. It is wonderful to see this group of ambitious young women taking the next step and following their dreams. They have bright futures ahead of them! “My appreciation and thanks go to all their teachers; their passion and commitment are key in providing the excellent teaching and support which enable the girls to achieve these outstanding results.”

Christ’s Hospital pupils and their teachers are celebrating an outstanding set of A level results. A highly impressive 48% of grades were A* - A, 76% A*-B and 15% A*. The average UCAS points achieved by a pupil was 136 which equates to AAB. There were some notable individual achievements and huge congratulations go to: Isaac Hayden who achieved 5 A* (Maths at Glasgow) Temi Adeyemi with 4 A* and 1 A (Natural Sciences at Cambridge) Hareef Asunramu 3 A* 1 A (Medicine at Imperial) Ben Johnstone 3 A* (Maths at Imperial) (deferred entry) Charles Lillywhite 3 A* 1 A (Natural Sciences at Durham) Michael Hobson 2 A* 1 A (Maths at Oxford) Remus Goldsmith 2 A* 1 A (Engi-

neering at Bristol) Congratulations also to Tomaz O’Donoghue and IB Diploma pupils Phoebe Thornhill and Beatrix Crinnion who have confirmed places at Oxbridge. As a consequence of this great set of results, out of the 146 pupils who chose to apply through UCAS this year 62% achieved their first place, 85% achieving their first or second choice and a vast majority going to a Russell Group Universities. In addition, nine pupils are awaiting their international application. Congratulations to Lorna Lam and Lucas Ng who are off to study in America, and Guilietta Weber who is off to Switzerland; in addition, several others have made successful applications to universities in Germany and Hong Kong. Temi Adeyemi, who is celebrating her place at Cambridge, said:

“When you come to Christ’s Hospital, you fall in love with the place. The School has an element of grandeur about it that just makes you fall in love with it. Before coming here, I didn’t really enjoy any particular subject; I just did okay at everything. At CH, I have discovered what I enjoy the most and I have made the most diverse range of friends you could ever imagine.” Simon Reid, Headmaster of Christ’s Hospital commented: “We have a consistently good record of attainment at Christ’s Hospital and this is another excellent year, particularly as it is the first set of results following the new demanding linear A level course. It is particularly encouraging that this talented group of pupils, who were fully involved in the broader curricular life of a busy boarding school, have performed so well in their academic subjects. It is also pleasing for me to learn that Christ’s Hospital has contributed to a national trend: a record number of pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds securing places at university.” Christ’s Hospital sixth form pupils also have the benefit of being offered three courses, the broader International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, A2 levels and the Cambridge Pre-U. The results for pupils taking the IB course were announced in July. In 2017, Christ’s Hospital pupils achieved a 100% pass rate with over a quarter of the cohort gaining 40 points or more (out of a maximum possible 45). Almost two thirds achieved 36 points or higher which is equivalent to A*A*AA at A2 level (or 523 UCAS points).

We are particularly proud of our results across the entire ability range and we are delighted also to see so many students gain the top grades. Whilst we are thrilled with our headline figures and congratulate the students going to some of the major Russell Group universities, we are just as pleased when students achieve their target grades and gain entry to their course of choice, wherever it is across the country. This morning was really uplifting to see that the hopes and dreams of so many students have come to fruition.”

Westlake House BBQ lunch brings local community together

Westlake House hosted a BBQ lunch and a fantastic live musical entertainment which were enjoyed by attendees. Staff, residents, relatives and the local community came together at Westlake House to enjoy the BBQ lunch that was held in the home’s grounds on 19 August. Visitors were made welcome as they enjoyed plenty of refreshments, such as Cold beers and wine, burgers, hot dogs, a variety of salads, sauces and other refreshing beverages, prepared by the catering team, who were hard

at work making sure that a great time was had by all. The team effort did not go unnoticed. Resident, Nora Tingey, said: “I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was surrounded by lots of great people, and the refreshments kept flowing. The weather held out until we finished. Staff did a great job, not just on the day, but organising the event and getting everyone together.” Members of Bowling Club, which the home currently sponsors, joined in the lunch. Looking smart, long standing member

of the club, Mr Mike Power, was suitably attired with his badge of office. The Bowling Club have about 150 members, prominently of the elder generations, with a mixture of men and women. In addition, they host many hundreds of visitors from other clubs generally of this age group. Some of Westlake House’s residents will also be joining their guests on a Friday evening. Mike Said: ‘’of course the bowling demographics is rather elderly, so a relationship with a splendid care home like Westlake House is beneficial to both of us. It was a pleasure to attend the BBQ and meet many of the residents, including several ex bowlers.” Soonita Shaw, Business Support Manager at the home, said: “Staff at Westlake House are dedicated to making sure that the home is a hub of the local community, and this event, along with all their hard work, has definitely paid off. It was a resounding success!” For more information, please contact Soonita Shaw, Business Support Manager at Westlake House, on 01403270773 or soonita.shaw@barchester.com

NSPCC’s safeguarding service receives funding boost from Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner

The NSPCC’s Speak Out Stay Safe service has been awarded £5,000 of ‘Safer in Sussex’ funding from the county’s Police & Crime Commissioner, Katy Bourne. Throughout the academic year, specially trained volunteers visit schools across Sussex to deliver the charity’s free service, which teaches children aged 4 to 11 about the different forms of abuse and

who they can turn to for help, including Childline. On average, two children in every primary school classroom have experienced abuse or neglect. Most children do not seek help, or tell anyone what is happening, until they are much older. It aims to reach children with vital, age appropriate messages to potentially stop abuse before it occurs. In 2016/17 the service spoke to 38,149 children and visited 135 primary schools across Sussex. Commenting on the award, NSPCC’s Schools Service Manager, Janet Hinton, said: “We are extremely grateful to Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner, Katy Bourne, for awarding us the funding. “This is vital funding for us and means we can continue to visit primary schools, across Sussex, to deliver these important safeguarding messages directly to

children through assemblies and workshops.” Commending the NSPCC on its successful bid, Mrs Bourne said: “This fund is about helping local community projects make Sussex safer and that’s exactly what NSPCC’s Speak Out Stay Safe service is doing. “Since launching the Safer in Sussex funding scheme in December 2013, I have made over £1m available to more than 200 local crime reduction and community safety initiatives. “The scheme is making a real difference to communities across Sussex. The high numbers applying shows that local organisations and community groups care about, and are committed to, helping keep Sussex a safe place in which to live. “I will be following the progress of the NSPCC’s Speak Out Stay Safe service closely over the coming months.”

Theme for Autumn food, music and charity Michelle Betts Horsham is always a vibrant town with plenty going on and judging by my Twitter feed, and September looks to be no exception. The theme for the start of Autumn seems to be food, music and charity from a quick scan of the posts so here’s my round up of what’s on according to the online newsfeed. There have been a plethora of posts about the ‘Big Busk’ which is taking place in town on Sunday 3rd September. Applications have been received from performers wishing to take part in the event which will see them competing across the town centre for your votes, with the winner taking the coveted ‘Horsham Trophy’. We have some very talented performers who busk locally so I’m looking forward to seeing who the participants are and who wins! Follow @HorshamDC and @HorshamTWS for all the details. The Big Busk forms part of the entertainment on offer during the Big Nibble weekend in Horsham on 2nd and 3rd September which forms part of a district wide food festival spanning the entire

month. Over the weekend the Carfax will play host to a cookery theatre with live demonstrations, there’s a food market and craft zone together with the Little Nibble Children’s Food Festival. In addition you’d be delighted to hear the @Hepworth Beer and Cider Trail is back! Like The Big Nibble on Facebook to keep up with everything that’s happening, including bus rides into town from Hop Oast. Many of our fantastic local food and drink producers will be joining in the Big Nibble, you have the chance to vote for your favourite producers and establishments in the Sussex Food Awards. @sxfoodawards on Twitter has all the details - the shortlists have been announced and you can vote from now until 19th September. If you’d like to nominate your favourite farmer, young chef, newcomer or street food you have until 7th September - with the Street Food Final taking place in the Carfax on 22nd October tasty! Fancy something a little more international? @ManningsHeath is hosting a traditional South African braai (BBQ to you and I) to celebrate Heritage Day on 24th September. There will be some fantastic South African wines on offer from the owner’s own vineyard in South Africa whilst they wait for the new vines planted at

Mannings Heath to reach maturity. I’m looking forward to trying the wine when they do. Fantastic wines and the knowledge they do tastings pairing them with @ cocoalocochoc means they are on my ‘must visit’ list! Moving into October, @kissingateales are holding Octoberfest at the brewery in Lower Beeding on 14th October. This microbrewery is growing in popularity all the time, producing some brilliant beers. In addition to the Octoberfest, they also bring you Gin in a Brewery on 6th October with @cabinpressurespirits, surely a match made in heaven! Follow them both on Facebook for all the details. A couple more charity dates for your diary from my Twitter feed; @glcoestateagents are holding a charity quiz night in Bilinghsurst on 22nd September for @ maryhowtrust for cancer prevention, with a fish and chip supper. The @pinkgiftfair takes place in the Horsham Council offices on 16th and 17th September, raising funds for @CancerResearchUK. Finally, @AgeUKHorshamDistrict have a Strictly Vintage Dance event on 30th September which sounds like a lot of fun. My must follows this month are all the fantastic local businesses I’ve mentioned in the article plus of course, @byjovemedia and @ thedistrictpost.

Horsham District Jobs and Skills Fair Returns

Following the success of last year’s Horsham District Jobs and Skills Fair, the event will return on 20 September 2017 (11am to 3pm), with the promise of 100s of jobs, apprenticeships and volunteering opportunities. The event, which is in its third year, will once again be held in the Drill Hall in Horsham.

Business

got a story? email us at newsdesk@thedistrictpost.co.uk

Organised by Horsham District Council in partnership with The District Post, Horsham Jobcentre Plus and The College of Richard Collyer, the event will be a great opportunity for those seeking a job, thinking of changing their existing one or considering on-the- job training through an apprenticeship, to meet a wide

range of employers eager to recruit and grow their organisations. Once again, there will be bite size workshops provided by the National careers Service, designed to help people improve their employability skills and job prospects. Additionally, employers will have the opportunity to sit down with prospective employees in the café (with cake!) to discuss opportunities. In the previous two years the event has been staged, 80 employers have offered over 1000 opportunities between them and about a third of these have been filled as a result of the day, with over 1000 local people attending. If you are searching for that perfect career, just looking for a part time opportunity or wanting an apprenticeship, then come along! Cottesmore ladies take top spots in county competition Iona McKean and Pat Johns took first and second places respectively in the SCLGA Veterans Championship last week at Pyecombe. This competition is for ladies over 60 with handicaps of 18 and under and was split over two rounds; the first was at the Seniors A competition at Piltdown earlier in the year and the second at the Beryl Pockett competition at Pyecombe last Friday. The scores are calculated on the scratch stableford scores for each round added together. Both ladies were somewhat surprised at their success as the playing conditions at Pyecombe had been tricky, resulting in the standard scratch going up to 76! McKean was also successful in Cottesmore’s Ladies Club Championships, taking her 13th title since the year 2000 with a total of 171 gross; one of the club’s juniors, Lucy Pigram, won the Net Trophy with a score of 147 net over

the two days off a handicap of 26. Owner, Matthew Rogerson, kindly presented the prizes and donated a memento to Iona. McKean has also qualified, along with her playing partner, Penny Gaunt, for the national Ping 4BBB Plate Final to be played at Gainsborough Golf Club in Lincolnshire on 4th September, with their score of 45 points. Johns was clearly in good form last week also winning the 18-hole Monthly Stableford with 35 points, closely followed by Julie Lintern on 34. The 9-hole PK Trophy Griffin Monthly Stableford was won by Sandra Morfey with 14 points. Not so successful were the Division 2 team who put up a great fight at Seaford against Royal Ashdown Forest in the SCLGA semi-finals but were beaten 4:3, though 4 matches did go down to the last putts on the 18th green.

YMCA trounce Worthing United with a dynamic second half

Photo by Keith Holmes Tuesday August 22 – The Peter Bentley Cup – Round 2 Horsham YMCA 5 0 Worthing United Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter The match was played on the second anniversary of the Shoreham air crash and a minute’s silence was observed in memory of Matthew Grimstone and Jacob Schilt, the two 23 year old Worthing United players who were victims of the tragedy.

The Peter Bentley competition began in 1938, then known as the Sussex Invitation Cup, and YM won it in 2001-2 and also got through to the final in 2008-9. But, the first half was frustrating for YM – they had 12 corners and peppered the woodwork, but simply could not score, Kieren Sills in the Worthing goal pulling off some great saves. Waves of YM attacks were somehow kept at bay and there was a danger that Worthing might snatch a goal on the break against the run of play, but, when called upon the YM

defence looked secure and Aaron Jeal in goal cleared the rare strikes that came his way, distributing the ball well. YM could easily have been leading 6 nil, or by an even bigger margin, but neither side could find the net in the first half. However, on the resumption YM soon quelled concerns, Sam Schaff scoring from close range after 2 minutes and then promptly adding another, the first two second half shots both producing goals, relaxing YM. Dave Brown netted a header in the 64th minute before substitutes Ashley Dugdale and – following a botched Worthing clearance - Ollie Gill, also scored, YM successfully closing down the game for the comprehensive clean sheet win. YM Manager Peter Buckland told the District Post: “Although at this early stage of the season Worthing are just one place behind us in the league, there was a huge gulf between the two sides today and I didn’t doubt that we’d win, but we should have scored loads of goals in the first half. In the interval I just told the players to stay calm and goals will come. Obviously I’m very happy with a 5 nil win, but we’ll be getting together on Thursday night to talk through what happened in the first half with a view to capitalising on future goal scoring opportunities. Meanwhile, it was good to give Ash Dugdale, Luke Gedling and Ollie Gill some pitch time.” This Saturday (26th) YM are back in league action, at Lancing, and on Bank Holiday Monday they welcome Three Bridges to Gorings Mead.

Competitive Pulborough Continue to Shine!

Billingshurst draw with Southwater in Friendly Bowls K Barraclough - Billingshurst BC Friendly match between Billingshurst and Southwater played at Billingshurst BC on Monday 14 August 2017 Billingshurst - 71 Southwater - 71 Billingshurst played home advantage to the full in the early ends of an afternoon friendly against Southwater and were happy to go in for tea 14 shots ahead. Southwater, mindful of losing at home to

‘Hurst earlier in the season, played with great determination on resumption but could not catch up completely giving Billingshurst victory by a single shot. Top rink for ‘Hurst went to Tessa Richards, Chris Laker & John Bennett (+12). Tessa Richards, Chris Laker & John Bennett Won: 25-13 John Lucas, Barry Gilbert & Betty Weller Won: 21-14 Roger Moore, Hazel Sandford & Geoff Weller Lost: 9-21 Robert Dakyn, June Bennett & Anita Colliety Lost: 16-22

With a quieter week this week, Pulborough players had some valuable time to practice and progress through the latter rounds of any internal competitions they may still be playing. Horsham Park were the first to visit the home side, with 3 rinks heading onto the green on Weds at 2pm. Alan Jordan and team battled hard to pull back from 10/4 down, to 12/11 on end 12, but they were unable to pull clear, loosing ground to the Horsham side and finishing 4 points shy of a win. A

tough battle for top rink saw skip, John Brown, with Kath Ayling as lead, Pauline Adsett as 2 and George Lewis as 3, pull 13 shots ahead by end 14, only to loose 5 of the remaining 7 ends, finishing with a very respectable 21/16 win. Len Adsett, with Mick Ayling as lead, Jane Gray as 2 and Chris Etherington as 3, kept their opponents in single figures until 18 ends, by which time a comeback was a tall order! The result being 22/12 to the Pulborough quartet. Pulborough finished with 2 rink

wins and overall victory 62/51, a close result against a quality side. Popular rivals Henfield, were the second to visit the Pulborough green, on Saturday afternoon under changable skies. As the players prepared to go out, the heavens literally opened, for just 5 minutes, as if to declare a stormy match! But luckily play was able to commence shortly after and the 4 triples took to the green just after 2pm. Len Adsett and team had a tough match, but despite dropping a 7 on end 12 they still kept in touch to finish 12 shots to 25. Ivan Salmon and team didn’t fair much better, with 8/16, but the club as a whole, held their heads up to finish 11 shots ahead of Henfield, thanks to a win by John Brown, Linda Meadowcroft and George Lewis 17/10 after winning 11/18 ends and an outstanding game by skip, Paul Day, with Pauline Adsett as Lead and Melvin Green as 2, who scored 2 6’s on ends 8 and 18, only loosing 4 ends to finish 30/5! A result worthy of top rink status! Pulborough next play Ewhurst at home on Tues, followed by an away friendly against Sutton on Weds evening from 5.30pm and the final round of the WSBL at home to Bognor on Sat 26th from 2pm, well worth a watch!

So, last Saturday’s win at Alwyns Lane, Chertsey was particularly welcome. The reward is a tie at their new Lancing home in the 1st qualifying round against Ashford United on Saturday September 2 (causing the rearrangement of their league fixture against Carshalton Athletic – at a date to be advised). At Chertsey, after Horsham

dominated the early play, Scott Kirkwood found the net only to be ruled offside. Then the hosts were soon down to ten men when their keeper Chico Ramos was sent off for a battering infringement against the Hornet’s Rob O’Toole. O’Toole had previously shot wide before Darren Boswell saw his shot parried. Boswell’s free kick arising from Ramos’s dismissal was deflected for an unfulfilled corner, but the midfielder did not have to wait long to put Horsham ahead with a curler. Chertsey responded, but ineffectually – until they equalised against the run of play when Mukudi skirted round Hornet keeper Michael Hunter. The score remained 1-1 at the break despite two more Horsham forays. On the restart the Hornets maintained possession but were unable to capitalise on chances created by Toby House and

Boswell. Mukudi then threatened to score again for Chertsey, but hit the woodwork. The Hornets, though, were not to be denied and, a quarter of an hour into the half, O’Toole crashed in a drive, the ball crossing the line via the post. Charlie Farmer almost increased the Hornets’ lead, but was thwarted by the crossbar - until the Hornet’s put the result beyond doubt when O’Toole headed home with pinpoint accuracy from Darren Budd’s corner. Chertsey then attacked, but to no avail and O’Toole unsuccessfully appealed for a Horsham penalty ahead of the ever-testing Boswell being unable shoot past Bryant, Chertsey’s stand in keeper. Worthy winners Horsham return to league action with a league trip to Thamesmead Town tomorrow (Saturday) and then welcome Guernsey to Lancing on Bank Holiday Monday, August 28th.

Surprise Roffey loss jeopardises title hopes Saturday August 19 - Sussex Premier League Roffey 259-9 (50 overs) - Hastings & St Leonards Priory 261-8 (49.4 overs) Hastings won by 2 wickets – Hastings 28 points - Roffey 10 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Roffey had to win to keep in touch with new league leaders East Grinstead and intended to beat mercurial Hastings, having thrashed them at home in June. Cricket, though can be capricious and the tightest of games with 520 runs scored and just two balls unused went Hastings’ way. Roffey elected to bat and useful contributions came from Theo Rivers, Matt Davies, Usman Khan, Chris Webb and George Fleming, but it was Jibran Khan who stole the show with a run a ball 115, ensuring a seemingly tough 260 run

target. But, unusually for Roffey, the opposition posted a substantial opening partnership (82), allowing the Hastings middle order to play with freedom. Sussex’s Harry Finch made 41 and seven other batsmen reached double figures, it was, though, 18 year old Sussex second XI player Joe Billings who impressed with 70, Hastings recovering from a shaky 161-6 with a 52 run stand. However, they still needed another 47, but the lower order stepped up and with six required off the last over, the fourth ball went to the boundary to give Hastings the unexpected win. Luke Barnard took 3-51 and Rivers and Ben Manenti - in his last game for Roffey before joining the Australian Academy in Brisbane – two apiece. Roffey coach Simon Fearnley told the District Post: “It was harder to score off the pace off bowlers but Jibran manoeuvred the ball around really well and given our track record we backed ourselves to defend

our score, so naturally Roffey and our contingent of travelling supporters were very disappointed to lose. We’ll be giving it our very best shot in the last two games, but we know we’ve got much to do.” Leaders East Grinstead bundled Ansty out for 53,winning easily (20 year old Zimbabwean Brad Evans taking 9-24), leaving Roffey 39 points adrift and praying for a major upset in the run in. Grinstead have Horsham and Cuckfield to play, while tomorrow, Saturday, Roffey return home for the last time this season – to host Middleton from the lower reaches of the table. Then on Bank Holiday Monday (August 28) Roffey make their first appearance in the Sussex Cup Final (T20), at the county HQ, Hove, 15.30 start. In the final Roffey meet Preston Nomads, whom they also play - at Fulking - on the last Saturday of the Sussex Premier League season, September 2.

Last Saturday was a milestone for Tom Clark and Horsham and Sussex cricket, too. Tom turned 16 in February and, against Bexhill, notched up a remarkable maiden century for Horsham 1st XI in the Sussex Premier League. Opening the batting Tom built his superb innings like a seasoned pro – first watchful, then steadily accelerating until taking off once he had passed 100, to finish on a highly memorable, exceptional 147 not out. Horsham Captain, former Sussex professional Michael Thornely, told the District Post: “Tom showed such great temperament, just carrying on while wickets fell at the other end.” Leaving the field Tom was congratulated by his enthralled teammates, but, having previously scored 155 for Sussex’s U12s and big runs in both innings for the U18s during last week, he took the occasion in his stride, while his proud father Geoff, watching from the front of the pavilion was more animated, describing Tom’s innings as: “A

brilliant moment, really good!” Left handed top order batsman, right arm medium pace bowler and a good fielder, Tom is one of the youngest players to break into the Sussex Academy, joining Horsham’s extraordinary conveyor belt of talent, recently including Robin Martin-Jenkins, Chris Nash, Will Beer and Tom Haines. And Horsham is very much a family club for the Clarks – older brother Ed plays and is the club’s Cricket Manager, Joe is in the seconds and although Ollie avoids whites, the boys’ mother Polly works tirelessly in the club office. When Tom joined the Academy, Polly told the District Post: “Tom captained the Sussex U15 side to win the ECB Royal London Cup last season and now thoroughly enjoys working with the Academy - it’s really bringing on his game. He went with them to Cape Town for 20 days and fortunately he was Man of the Match in the first game and subsequently got more runs, and some wickets. It wasn’t just cricket, it was about personal development and team bonding, too and it was great that Chris Nash went with the party, he knows the country and made sure that they took the opportunity to have a good look round. At Ardingly Tom has been coached by Chris’s brother Mark and Luke Wright’s father Keith – they’re very pleased because the school hasn’t had anyone in the Academy for a while.” Tom has played for the Sussex Development XI, managed by Academy Director Carl Hopkinson, who says: “Tom progressed well on the tour, so we added him to the programme to maximise his development.”

Clark and Aston deliver comprehensive win Horsham 288-6 (50 overs) Bexhill 211 All Out (45 overs) Horsham won by 77 runs – Horsham 30 points, Bexhill 7 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham completed a double against bottom of the table Bexhill thanks to two outstanding performances with bat and ball – from Tom Clark and John Aston. 16 year old left hander Tom opened the batting and treated the crowd to an exceptional innings. While six wickets went down at the other end he held things together, constructing an impressive, well deserved century and once that had been achieved – by dancing down the wicket to smite a boundary - he took off with some cheeky improvisations, including the ramp shot, to finish with an unbeaten 139 ball 147, containing 22 fours and a six. He had scored an 80 and a 70 for Sussex U18s during the week, Horsham’s Nick Oxley making 185 in the same game. Tom, recovered from a hand injury, told the District Post: “We got off to a good start and I felt comfortable with each new

batsman and once I’d got to 100 I decided to play a few shots.” Nick Oxley made 47 and Mika Ekstrom 43, leaving Horsham happy to have set a very demanding 289 run target, always likely to test the struggling visitors, who were soon set back by a superb leaping catch by wicket keeper Ryan Maskell. The top five batsmen all reached double figures, hitting 21 fours between them, but, once they were out Aston ran through the tail, to end up with 5-38 as Bexhill – reduced to 10 men because of another warm up injury, requiring their scorer to field as a sub – rapidly disintegrated. Ekstrom took 2-33 and Michael Munday and Oxley one each. The win leaves Horsham in third spot on 322 points, Captain Michael Thornely telling us: “We’ve seen an exceptional innings from Tom today, rounded off by an excellent spell of bowling from John Aston.” Tomorrow (Saturday) in their penultimate game, Horsham visit top of the table East Grinstead before returning home on September 2 to finish their campaign with a match against doomed Ansty.
