Horsham Churches Together bring Christmas to the Carfax Children and families experienced the true meaning of Christmas in Horsham’s town centre, last Saturday, at Horsham Churches Together’s free Christmas Event. The event started, under a blue sky with bright sun, with the children’s Musical Nativity at the Carfax Bandstand led by Little Notes. Children came dressed in Nativity costumes and joined in as Mark Bradbury and band orchestrated a lively retelling of the Nativity story. Fascinated children watched as living characters acted to form a Nativity tableau in front of the bandstand. Then it was time to start the Family Nativity Trail... Children clutched their very own Passport and set off to get their first stamp. Mary and Joseph were waiting at the Carfax Amphitheatre with the Bethlehem backdrop, alongside the very popular donkeys from East Clayton Farm. Journeying on, they walked across the Forum to meet the shepherds with real sheep, and collected a candy cane. On to the Bishopric, where they knelt down at a manger contain-

ing baby Jesus and enjoyed having their photo taken at a pier-style Nativity Scene. On to Swan Walk, where they found the wise men giving out chocolate coins and called in to the Messy Christmas pop-up shop to take part in craft activities and relax with colouring sheets. To mirror the journey taken by the children, they were all given a book called ‘The Very Greatest Journey’ published by The Bible Society, and a wooden Christmas tree hanging decoration of the Nativity scene as a prize for completing the trail. While the Trail was taking place, spectators were enjoyed the Christmas Concert on the Carfax Bandstand, listened to: Liezel Brink-McCulloch, MezzoSoprano, St John’s, Broadbridge Heath Choir, Living Faith Assembly Choir, Warnham Church Choir, Cantatrice Voices, St Mary’s Church Choir, Horsham Rock Choir, and the Salvation Army Band. Mulled drinks were provided, along with German and Italian biscuits. More on page 3

The festive season is upon us and many of us will over indulge more than we should. Angela Abbott from Holistically Balanced is delighted to share seven tips with the County Times readers to help your system cope better with the extravagances that Christmas will bring. 1.Drink more water! When your system is well hydrated it’s happier and everything works more efficiently. However drinking still

water is the way to go as unfortunately, fizzy/sparkling water behaves differently in the body and isn’t as beneficial. For some people too much fizzy water will actually make their symptoms worse. 2. Move your body and get active on a regular basis. Not only does this support your overall health and leave you feeling better in yourself, it can help to keep you regular. Going for walks, stretching and being more active generally

are all good. You don’t have to join a gym or overly exert yourself, just exercise to invigorate, rather than to exhaust yourself. 3. Remember to include fresh and unprocessed foods in your diet. Fresh fruit and veg are a great source of fibre which helps keep your digestive tract healthy. Ensure that with the sumptuous Christmas fayre, you include some of these healthier options, as not only will they balance the richness, but they will help your digestive system too. 4. If you are prone to bloating, avoid beans, onions, broccoli, cabbage, sprouts and cauliflower. Triggers will vary from person to person and some will also find that grains can be very hard work for their digestive system, so be mindful not to overdo it. Many people

who reduce their wheat intake, will often notice big improvements in their digestive health. 5. Relax, as our digestive health is directly impacted by our stress levels. Take time each day to properly relax and unwind, but remember that having a glass of wine every evening does not count, as alcohol puts more stress on your body! If the body is in a relaxed state when eating, lots of digestive issues can be avoided, so make meals times a time to relax. 6 Try Aloe Vera juice. Aloe Vera juice is amazing stuff and it calms and soothes the digestive tract. Many people who use it notice the benefits very quickly and it is inexpensive and readily available in health food stores and many supermarkets. Ideally go for an organic version with as few ingredients as possible and look for the aloe leaf inner juice to have as high a percentage as possible when reading the ingredients. 7. Take time to enjoy some tasty teas, as there are many teas available that will support your digestive health. Peppermint tea will relax the body and mind whilst reducing bad breath, supporting digestion and boosting the immune system and ginger tea will help the absorption of foods, in addition to reducing bloating and nausea. There are many other tea blends too and where possible aim for organic products. Always check the ingredients and look for a tea that actually contains the herbs and spices or their extracts and not a ‘flavoured’ tea. For more advice and information please contact Angela Abbott on 07941 134267, email: angela@holisticallybalanced.co.uk or visit the website www.holisticallybalanced.co.uk .

Horsham district shows Carfax Christmas its cultural colours The afternoon ended with the Carol Service at the Carfax Bandstand, with everyone joining in the singing using the Journey to Bethlehem carol booklet from the Bible Society. A short message reflecting the theme was given by Revd Jimmy Young from St Mary’s, and the singing was accompanied by the Salvation Army Band. Horsham Churches Together is very grateful to almost 200 people who took part in the Christmas event, along with partners who supported the event: Coden Events (Horsham General Market), Crates Local,

The true depth of the culture in the Horsham District has been highlighted by the incredible amount of grant applications made to the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 team. More than 140 applications were made by the deadline of Friday 15 December, from communities, groups and individuals from all over the district, including Steyning, Billingshurst, Ashington, West Chiltington, Henfield and Horsham. All areas of the programme have had interest. In performing arts, dance and theatre were well represented; For our local food and drink providers, the choice was extensive but included food fairs, workshops and shared experiences; Digital communications attracted a lot of interest with gaming, digital exhibitions and projections put forward. Looking at heritage and history, the wealth of historical ideas and projects to celebrate this slice of England were numerous. The music element of the programme attracted ideas ranging from acoustic guitars to classical music and choirs, and the literary world has had a lot of interest in celebrating Shelley and Belloc, as well as more recent writers such as the Year of Culture’s patron, Julia Donaldson, and her works. Due to the volume of projects, the total cost of which stands at £1,648,596, with £669,890 being asked for via Year of Culture grants, the funding pot is heavily oversubscribed. This means some groups will be unsuccessful and others will not receive the full amount they’ve asked for. However, for those groups, the Year of Culture team will be working closely with applicants and organisers to help apply for funding from elsewhere to realise their suggested projects. To this end, the Year of Culture team have or-

ganised funding workshops with various organisations, including WSCC and the Arts Council, and are keen to encourage groups to look for funding through other organisations too, along with the team’s support. Commenting on the success of the expressions of interest received, Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Jonathan Chowen, said: “I am not totally surprised by this amazing response, as I have come to know the rich depth of cultural interest in our district, but I am delighted at the sheer volume of applications for funds that we have received in order to celebrate the Year of Culture in 2019. “I am also massively impressed by the high quality of the applications and the broad range of suggestions that have been put forward. “Going forward, we now have a lot of work on our hands to work through all the applications and find appropriate funding solutions for them, but I am extremely excited at the sheer scope of

the celebrations we will be able to stage as a result of this great response.” More workshops are being organised and information will be available through the website, www.hdculture2019.co.uk. Everyone who filled in an expression of interest will be contacted by the Year of Culture team with feedback on their application. Those put through to the final stage will have until Wednesday 31 January 2018 to get their formal application forms in. Art Lecture – Simon Periton For the final art lecture this term, Christ’s Hospital was privileged to have Simon Periton speak to Deps and Grecians (Years 12 and 13) about his career as an artist since his student days at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts in London. Periton’s major body of work has been inspired by the often overlooked piece of domestic cooking decoration, the humble doily. Although seemingly abstract, his cutouts are littered with representational imagery, layered in complex compositions creating an unashamedly

decorative aesthetic. However, on closer inspection, there is often punk iconography embedded within a lot of his artworks, giving them a subversive undercurrent. He has worked in two dimensions as well as sculpturally, including in the Alice de Rothschild gardens at Waddesdon Manor, and he is currently working on a commission for the ticket hall of the new Farringdon train station in London. He is represented by some elite independent galleries and his work is in the collections of major art institutions worldwide.

“Fostering is even more special at Christmas”

The festive season is often busy and emotional, but it can be a very different time of year for the hundreds of local children in foster care. This Christmas, people are being asked to spare a thought for children in care, whilst foster families across the county gear up for the festive season. Tracey and Ann are two foster carers in West Sussex who are helping to keep Christmas alive for children who are unable to spend it with their birth families. Being in foster care can mean

having a very different Christmas from what children and young people are used to. Tracey said: “Fostering is even more special at Christmas. Christmas can be an emotional time of year, but having lots of little faces around you that’s special,” Tracey and her husband became foster carers for West Sussex County Council in 2012 and they have supported many children and young people for different reasons. Tracey currently offers the chance for a child to be fostered alongside one of their parents:

Horsham district’s residents are generally excellent at recycling; the recycling is mostly clean and in good condition for reprocessors to make it into new stuff. However recent analysis of Horsham’s waste has shown that a large amount of recycling is still being thrown in the rubbish bin, along with other items that can be recycled elsewhere. The info graphic opposite shows what was found and how these materials can be reduced, reused or recycled. • Did you know that you can recycle empty aerosol cans and clean foil in your blue-top bin?

“Some children aren’t used to presents or can get overwhelmed when there’s lots of family together, so you have to be flexible. “My own family have had to adapt and change some of our own little rituals, but it has opened our eyes to other people’s traditions.” Ann and her husband became foster carers with the County Council more than seven years ago and are looking after three siblings in long term foster care. Ann said: “We invite our children to make or buy something for their birth family members, so we can keep them in their minds in the run up to Christmas. “Being part of a fostering family has made our own children appreciate the opportunities they have had. Christmas is a really exciting time as a family, because now there are even more stockings for us to open! It makes it extra special.” Ann and Tracey also benefit from sharing the festive season with the local community of almost 300 approved County Council foster carers. Ann explained: “Our local foster carer association, UFCA, organises seasonal family events and arranges discounted pantomime tickets. They’re tremendous and the kids absolutely love it!” To find out more about fostering and information sessions taking place in 2018, please visit: www. westsussex.gov.uk/fostering.

Children bring joy to Westlake House

The residents of Westlake House Care Home, Horsham, were joined by children from Warnham Primary School, who spent the afternoon singing Christmas carols. Residents were also visited by Santa and his Elf. The pair donated gifts and the school received a thank you donation for their school fund from all the staff and residents. Westlake House General Manager, Elizabeth Higson, said: “we strive to build strong relationships between generations, as well as with our neighbours and local community, Jo Keating, Music Teacher from the Warnham Primary School, said: ’’The children have thoroughly enjoyed their visit this afternoon and were delighted to see the residents enjoying their

songs so much. It was a wonderful opportunity for the children to perform in the local community and so well received by all the staff and residents. We were immensely proud of the children who sang so beautifully and were an absolute credit to the school. “It was so heart-warming to see such genuine joy and appreciation from the residents. The staff at Westlake House have been so generous in their donation to the school and their gifts to all the children from Santa.” The residents also met many of the students from Christ’s Hospital. The students made twice weekly visits to the home, before the school broke up for the Christmas period. The visits saw them partake in several activities with the residents and spend time getting to know each other and

sharing stories from their childhood. At the same time, staff were also wearing their most festive jumpers to raise money in aid of Save the Children. Some of the residents got very creative and decorated their own glitzy knitwear with tinsel, stars, baubles and snowflakes. Gloria, a Westlake resident, said: “It has been a very festive day and everybody looks fantastic. What a wonderful way to raise money for charity!” Louise Bettiss, Head of Activities, said: “Today has been a whole lot of fun with some of the most outlandish Christmas jumpers I have ever seen! This event, along with the children singing the Christmas carols, have really showcased the creativity and funloving spirit of all our residents and staff.”

Residents called to action to HelpMyNHS Local people are being called to action to help the NHS provide the best possible care this winter. A campaign has been launched to raise awareness of the services available to ensure people are getting the right care at the right time and are not putting NHS services under unnecessary strain. Winter is expected to be extremely difficult for the NHS, especially on A&E departments and GP surgeries, as they cope with increasing numbers of people seeking treatment. This could potentially be made worse this year by the number of people using these services when they could have been treated more appropriately elsewhere - or could have treated themselves at home. Nationally, one in four people are reported to go to A&E when they could have been treated elsewhere. Additionally, one in four people, who visit their GP with a minor illness, could have been treated at home with the help of a pharmacist. The local NHS have launched a campaign to help people become aware of all the services available, so they can get the right care and free up essential emergency and GP services for those most in

need. #HelpMyNHS calls on the public to play their part by adopting small behavioural changes to ease pressures on local health and care services, saving them for those in the most need. It

Everyone can play an important role in recognising, treating and managing their own health conditions asks people to: #HelpMyA&E by highlighting the alternative services to A&E and when these should be used. #HelpMyGP by the using GP appointments properly, taking steps to help prevent getting ill and self-managing minor illnesses, as well as using alternative services, such as pharmacists. A dedicated campaign website, www.sussexhelpmy.nhs.uk, highlights these alternatives to A&E visits or GP appointments,

and is tailored to include listings on services available to the public across Sussex. The campaign was launched during #HelpMyNHS week - 27 November to 1 December. Dr Minesh Patel, Clinical Chair for Horsham and Mid Sussex CCG and local GP, said: “The NHS is doing everything it can, with the resources it has, to prepare for the extra pressures we expect to face this winter. Now we are calling the public to action to HelpMyNHS by ensuring they access the right service for their needs at the right time. “Everyone can play an important role in recognising, treating and managing their own health conditions, reducing the need for an unnecessary GP appointment. The campaign is encouraging people to only go to A&E if they need immediate, emergency care and have symptoms of serious illness or injuries that could be life threatening. “We have found one of the main reasons services aren’t being used properly is a lack of awareness of the other services (outside of GP appointments and A&E) when there are fantastic alternatives that offer quicker treatment closer to home.”

West Sussex public buildings the subject of a new digital procurement said: “The County Council and District and Borough Councils are joining together to build ultrafast broadband and connect to each other digitally, and ensure we meet the future need of public services. “Public services will demand ultrafast speeds to connect to each other and communities, to share information, give and receive services and interact efficiently in a digital environment. “By investing in full fibre infrastructure now, we are getting our

buildings and our public services ready for the future.” WSCC also intends to create a framework agreement accessible to all public authorities active in West Sussex, for instance, schools, the NHS and Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, Sussex Police, the West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, Department for Work and Pensions, HM Revenue and Customs, Ministry of Justice and Courts, GP Surgeries, Office for National Statistics, Department for Environment, Food

and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and the Department for Transport. The services of the successful supplier will also be made available to one neighbouring authority, Brighton & Hove City Council. West Sussex County Council is seeking a sole service provider of a range of services, including design, installation, support and maintenance of dark fibre connectivity circuits to a contracting authority’s sites over at least 20 years.

Woodburners.co.uk A new digital procurement aiming to deliver full fibre ‘ultrafast’ broadband to public buildings in West Sussex has been launched. West Sussex County Council has now begun an OJEU (Official Journal of the European Union) procurement to select a supplier able to provide a long-term lease for full fibre broadband infrastructure capable of delivering ‘ultrafast’ speeds. The County Council will lead the procurement on behalf of all seven District and Borough Councils in West Sussex. The focus of the procurement will be at sites

managed by WSCC and includes a number of public sector buildings put forward by each District and Borough Council in a number of urban locations: Bognor Regis, Burgess Hill, Chichester, Crawley, Haywards Heath, Horsham, Littlehampton, Shoreham and Worthing. Ultrafast broadband is the next generation of connectivity, capable of delivering download speeds from 1Gb (1,000 Mbps) using pure optical fibre. Rotary Club support for the Storrington Christmas Pop-In Lunch The Christmas Pop-In Lunch is the December event of the Storrington Pop-In Lunch Club which meets monthly throughout the year. The Lunch Club meets on the 1st Thursday each month in Storrington Village Hall. Members are primarily elderly members of the local community. Some 50 guests attended the event this year, enjoying a glass of wine and traditional Christmas lunch. Special guests were the young children from Storrington First School, who entertained all by singing

Christmas carols. Storrington & Pulborough District Rotary Club has sponsored and run this free community Christmas event for many years. A dedicated team of Rotary Wives provides the lunch and other Rotarians help prepare the hall, serve the food, wash up and tidy up afterwards. This year, the Pop-In Lunch welcomed support from the Waitrose Community Matters grant initiative, which provides help for vulnerable members of the community.

Luckily The Hawth has the answer, with a line up of five shows featuring nine Strictly Come Dancing professionals from past and present. On Friday 12 January profes-

sional dancer and choreographer Kristina Rihanoff, who spent eight years on hit BBC show Strictly Come Dancing, teams up with Christopher Maloney (X Factor) for a new smash hit dance show that promises to transport audiences on a musical journey through time. Dance to the Music will showcase every genre of dance, from the roaring twenties to the present day, with

plenty of sequins and surprises along the way! In addition to Christopher’s vocals, Kristina will be paired with her former professional dance partner Robin Windsor, who starred on Strictly for four years. Also gracing the stage will be Oksana Platero, who partnered Judge Rinder on Series 14 of the BBC show, becoming famous for her jaw-dropping lifts! On Friday 23 March you can look forward to An Audience With Ian Waite and Oti Mabuse – Rhythm of the Night. Promising dance fans an extravaganza of high intensity latin and ballroom favourites, the show is packed with wonderful moments of both fun-filled, fleet-footed entertainment and a chance to learn more about Ian and Oti and their lives. The pair always pushed the boundaries of dance to bring the best out of their celebrity partners, with both reaching the final of the hit BBC Saturday night show. Last season it was Oti who almost waltzed off with the Glitterball with her partner, Hollyoaks’ Danny Mac. Vincent Simone and Flavia Cacace are back at The Hawth Tuesday 27 - Saturday 31 March in their most explosive show ever, Tango Moderno! This brand new theatrical spectacular intoxicates and seduces audiences, featuring ten truly fantastic dancers, top class West End singers and of course,

the world famous Strictly Come Dancing Tango superstars Vincent and Flavia. With live on-stage music, including an incredible soundtrack packed with classic hits Tango Moderno is a breath of fresh air, pulsating with life, energy and colour giving you the most exciting stage experience in years. Strictly Come Dancing’s charismatic Brendan Cole will take to the stage once again on Wednesday 14 March to wow audiences with his latest spectacular production, All Night Long. Created and hosted by Brendan himself, the show takes audiences through a journey of dance, music, comedy, passion, intimacy and all things ballroom as he is joined on stage by a sensational cast of superbly talented championship dancers and a 13-piece band and singers; whipping up an extravagant mix of Latin fever and ballroom magic. Finally, on Monday 16 July, The Hawth is delighted to welcome Giovanni Pernice with his show, Born To Win. The show follows the tale of a beautiful young couple who fall in love on a windy dark night in a bustling Italian city. Featuring beautiful choreography to dances like the Rhumba, the Viennese Waltz, the Paso Doble and the Argentine Tango to name a few. Tickets are available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 or online: hawth.co.uk

Merry Christmas from The Capitol! G IN L L T! SE FAS

JACK AND THE BEANSTALK Friday 8 – Sunday 31 December

When director of Brighton’s premier pantomime, The Amazing Adventures of Pinocchio, James Weisz, needed a special puppet to bring the panto puppet circus to life, he didn’t know where to turn. Luckily local resident Julia Donaldson, author of the much-loved children’s books The Gruffalo, What The Ladybird Heard, Stick Man, and the The Ugly Five, came forward and suggested that the Snake from The Gruffalo would fit the bill. Julia, who lives in Steyning, has kindly lent her own Snake

to the production for this year’s festive theatre offering. “We are overjoyed and thankful to Julia for this kindness,” said James, “he’s such a beautiful creation and being able to use him in the production is a wonderful gift. We hope it’ll be a special surprise for children in the audience. We have been using him in rehearsal and it’s like having a celebrity in the room! Everyone who pops into rehearsal has been saying ‘Isn’t that the snake from The Gruffalo?’ ’’ Pinocchio combines puppetry,

aerial circus, dance, songs and comedy routines to deliver this much-loved story of a wooden boy who comes to life. It’s familyfriendly festive, magical fun and opens on Performances: December 20 to January 6, Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts, Gardner Centre Road, Falmer, Brighton BN1 9RA. Volunteering Opportunities Building Heroes based in Pulborough is a charity which retrains military veterans for a career in the building trades. They rely on fundraising activities to fulfil their vital role in helping ex-service personnel into employment and need enthusiastic, friendly and reliable people to support and increase their activities and to raise the profile of the charity in the local area. If you can help organise fundraising events (e.g. sponsored walk, swim, bake sale, coffee mornings, etc, liase with community groups who may hold fundraising events for them, make phone calls to potential supporters, offer support at existing events (e.g. handing out flyers, providing information, serving drinks) or various other support tasks they would love to hear from you. Are you passionate about your community and want to make a difference? Emerging Futures train individuals to work as part of a coaching team to support their local community. Family recovery coaches help individuals in a family develop their own wellbeing and support system and to make valued life choices. And recovery coaches support individuals to move in to the community from structured treatment, detox, residential rehabilitation and prison. Pulborough and District Community Care Association needs a Wednesday club volunteer to help with activities at its social club for older people, for example short mat bowls, games, bingo, and the occasional outing - all accompanied by tea and cake. The association also needs a telephonist to work from home to take appointments for its Community Transport Service. Carers Support West Sussex needs support group co-facilitators to help provide a confidential space for carers to meet, offload and gain information. They also need telephone support volunteers to help carers share emotions and reduce stress and isolation by providing active listening. And the charity seeks young adult carer engagement volunteers to meet and communicate regularly with young adult carers to support them. If you want to know more about any of the opportunities above or are thinking of volunteering and want to know what’s out there, just log on to www.hamsva.org.uk/opportunities and explore the many ways in which you can get involved in your community. Can you help beat hunger by offering a couple of hours at your local Tesco store on Nov 30 or December 1 or 2? Volunteers are needed to help collect donation at the UK’s largest food drive this Christmas. The collections take place at Tesco stores UK-wide when volunteers are asked to help collect food donations from customers for a few hours in their local store and hand out the FareShare shopping list. In just three hours you could collect enough food to make 600 meals and change someone’s Christmas. Details are available at www.fareshare.org.uk/food-collection where you can also sign up for a shift.

Horsham Men excel in indoor competition Saturday & Sunday December 16th & 17th

Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter With a much changed team this season, Horsham Men’s 1st XI have been finding life hard, so they were delighted to sail through the South League indoor six-a-side qualifying tournament in Eastleigh last weekend, taking them into – for the first time - the National League indoor competition (on January 6th & 7 th). Horsham Captain Andy Isaacs

told the District Post: “We took eight players to Hampshire and are allowed to have two non club players guesting. First we saw off Croydon 5-0, before beating Chichester 1-0. Then we lost 3-1 to Trojans, but bounced back with a 2-1 win against Winchester and a 4-1 victory over Woking.” Indoor hockey is fast and furious, Isaacs adding: “It’s a completely different game – tactical knowledge is critical and the boys played brilliantly. If we come out in the top three in January we’ll progress to the next National stage.”

The indoor success will entail rearrangement of Horsham Men’s Sussex Cup Quarter Final originally scheduled for January 6 at Eastbourne. Meanwhile, Andy Isaacs has taken over coaching the league team for the rest of the season and is determined to secure survival. After the frostinduced postponement of the men’s game at Oxford on December 9, they return to league action on January 13 to play Indian Gymkhana at Isleworth. In the opening game of the season Horsham beat Gymkhana 5-0, notching up their sole league triumph to date

Horsham denied in controversial finale

Boro start well before clinical Hove win in style Saturday December 16 – London 2 South East Hove 49 17 Pulborough Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Boro gave a good account of themselves in the first half but were undone by current league runners up Hove after the break. Hove beat Boro at Freelands 25-54 in September, but, in this second encounter - at the Hove Recreation Ground - Boro caused the hosts initial concerns, Brad Game and Ben Miller both completing two good tries before Will Scrase also got over the line. A trademark Frazer Oliphant-Hope conversion enabled Boro to remain in close contention with a half time score of 23-17. But, Boro were unable to get on the score sheet again, Hove showing their class as the game wore on. Boro Team

Saturday December 16 – London 2 South East Horsham 23 25 Old Alleynians Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter In this see-sawing game Horsham started brightly, taking an early lead before going behind, clawing back and then being cruelly beaten right at the very death. Joe Wilde kicked a Horsham penalty in the tenth minute ahead of OAs failing with a similar opportunity. Then Wilde embarked on a long run, only to be thwarted, but, mid way through the first half, Emmett O’Rahilly got over the line to put the Green & Whites 8-0 in front, the conversion going begging. OAs then responded with an attack and, with advantage being played, they scored and converted, reducing the deficit

to a single point, before kicking a penalty to take the lead. A dropped OAs ball then let Horsham through but they were blocked, the ball going up field amid increasing OAs possession. A promising Horsham three quarter movement followed but OAs broke away with another try, converted with final move of the half to leave Horsham trailing 8-17. On the restart OAs immediately scored again with a try in the left corner. Horsham subsequently intercepted but were pinned back and unable to clear. Jordan Smith was then yellow carded, just ahead of OAs missing a penalty kick. A rare Horsham attack followed, but a dropped ball prevented progress. The game became a 14-a-side encounter when an OAs player also received a yellow and, with Horsham getting more of the ball, Smith returned to cross the line, maximised by Wilde, Jake

Lowe promptly adding another try. Then a penalty gave Horsham the narrowest of leads only for this to prove temporary when an almost posthumous OA penalty was awarded, which was flagged positively despite home supporters behind the posts protesting that the ball had not gone over, a view shared with senior referees spectating at the game. But the result stood – OAs snatching the win with the last kick of the match, much to the chagrin of Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker. Now fifth, Horsham restart their league programme on January 6 with a trip to Essex to take on the team they beat 88-10 at home in September – bottom placed Barking - who have a points difference of minus 576 and are still seeking an elusive first win of the season.

Horsham go third with Maidenhead double Saturday December 16 – South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division 1 Maidenhead Ladies 0 2 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Ladies beat Maidenhead 4-0 at home in the first week of the season and they overcame them again in Berkshire last Saturday, moving up to third in the table, shading Basingstoke on goal difference but just two points behind second placed Teddington. After travelling to Surbition on December 9 only to be presented with a frozen unusable pitch, the Ladies were pleased to be able to play against Maidenhead, clinching a

strong win in the process. Team Manager Jane Denman told the District Post: “We are play-

We are playing well at the moment and it was good to take away all three points at Maidenhead ing well at the moment and it was good to take away all three points at Maidenhead.” Tiff Male put Horsham ahead with a field goal in the first half, the score

remaining 1-0 at the break. Then, after the resumption, Sam Stares put the game beyond Maidenhead’s reach, again in open play, before Horsham successfully closed the game down to run out worthy 2-0 winners. Jane Denman added: “We’ve got the best defensive record in the league – only conceding 9 goals in 11 games – so let’s hope we keep it up!” The Ladies now revert to indoor competition and will return to league action on Saturday January 13 with a home fixture against Epsom. Staines remain bottom of the league with ten defeats from the same number of games, with Epsom occupying the penultimate berth.

Manager Henry Game told the District Post: “Hove are a strong side and got up and running quickly, but we made it edgy for them in the first half. Then, after the interval, they were more clinical. We are learning a huge amount after last season’s promotion and have something to build on after this game. We scored three tries again, but the bonus point for four tries is proving elusive. We can now regroup over the Christmas and New Year break with a chance to recover from one or two injuries. We resume on January 6 with a tough visit from runaway leaders Dartfordians, but we are a different proposition at home, where we beat Dover, who we go to after Dartfordians. Then we entertain Charlton Park, again at home – they’re third but we gave them a good run for their money in south east London earlier in the season.”

Hornets pleased to grab Kentish win Saturday December 16 – Bostik Football League South Division Ashford United 1 2 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Coming into this game Ashford occupied penultimate spot in the table with 12 points, 21 goals scored and 57 conceded from 22 games. Clearly, they could do with a win, but Horsham beat them again, having previously eliminated them 6-0 from the FA Cup at the First Qualifying Round stage. It was, though, Ashford – the Nuts & Bolts who scored first and had subsequent chances, but Horsham successfully clawed ahead before closing the game down to take all of the points. The Hornets began well, Tony Nwachukwu finding the goal in the second minute, only to be ruled offside, as was Toby House shortly afterwards. Ashford responded but Rohdell Gorden’s shot was way off target, earning ribaldry from Hornets’ fans, but the hosts soon had the first laugh when Shomari Barnwell eluded Steve Metcalf to fire into the corner of the goal. However, Ashford’s lead was short-lived, Jack Hartley finishing off Joe Shelley’s pass to equalise in the 15th minute. Hartley then came within an ace of putting Horsham in front, but his strike seared the crossbar. The Nuts & Bolts defence needed tightening up, Nwachukwu scything through,

only for Thomas Cooney to boot clear for an unconverted corner. The Hornets, though were not to be denied, Lewis Hyde heading home Metcalf’s supply to give Horsham the lead. It might have got even better for the Hornets, but Scott Kirkwood’s long range shot was off target, revitalising Ashford - yet Gorden’s attempt also went wide. House then scored, angering the Hornets’ travelling support when it was disallowed. At the end of the first half Brannon Daly in the Horsham goal saved an effort from Ira Jackson, securing the Hornets 2-1 lead at the break. Ashford came back out fighting, but again Daly thwarted Jackson. House was then in action, first heading wide and then enduring the same fate with his foot. Horsham continued pressing but Ashford keeper Michael McEntegart thwarted Hartley’s opportunity. Ashford continued looking for parity, but Barnwell could only hit the side netting before Metcalf sent a curler past the post. The Hornets were happy to come away with a win – especially as Kent has not always been a happy hunting ground for them. They return to Lancing this Saturday, against 14th placed Thamesmead Town (who beat Horsham 5-0 in August) before taking an early morning flight to Guernsey (20th) on Boxing Day. Early season, Horsham beat Guernsey 2-1 at Lancing. Lewes remain top, one point ahead of Cray Wanderers who have a game in hand.

YMCA go third with impressive win Thanks We would like to thank all of our sports contribut0rs during 2017 including: Keith Holmes Diane Game Tim Hewlett Johnny Hewlett Robert Plinton Ian Ford Tim Roberts

Saturday December 16 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division East Preston 1 4 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter YM beat East Preston 3-1 at Gorings Mead in August and rubbed salt in the wounds with an impressive win at The Lashmar last Saturday, moving up to third. They started as they meant to proceed – dominating the opening exchanges and were rewarded in

the 19th minute when Tom Gilbert defied a scramble to score from close range. And it soon got even better – much better – when YM stole possession in the EP half, enabling Ash Dugdale to double YM’s lead, before Dave Brown fired home to give YM a three goal cushion at the break. The second half was, though, a different story with YM unable to replicate the rhythm of the first half after a series of substitutions. With EP coming more into the game they eventually found the net following a defensive melee.

But, YM were not done, Luke Donaldson sealing the 4-1 win putting the icing on the cake with an extra time goal. After YM’s fourth consecutive win Manager Peter Buckland said: “East Preston were on a good run and are a good young side playing the game in the right spirit and I think they’ll cause problems for others as the season progresses. So this was a solid performance from us.” YMs next challenge, a tough one, is their postponed RUR Charity Cup Quarter Final – at Chichester on Tuesday (19th). Then, on

We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Wednesday, the day after Boxing Day, YM have an evening local derby against 12th placed Broadbridge Heath at Gorings Mead before, next Saturday (29th), they visit seventh in the table Three Bridges, the team that beat YM in both the league and the FA Cup in August Haywards Heath remain top of the table with 40 points and a game in hand, with Chichester second on 38 points -- level pegging with YM but a superior goal difference.

Christmas sporting wishes and New Year resolutions! Sport Martin Read - Sports Reporter Sports players, officials and spectators in our district are very fortunate to have a wide variety of activities available for their enjoyment, but, for now, concentrating on football, cricket, rugby and hockey, what are some of our main wishes for 2018? Horsham Football Club has been homeless for nine years, so let’s hope their new ground is now finally built and open for matches during next year with without any further complications. Broadbridge Heath FC are

also getting new facilities, so completion of that development is also awaited with enthusiastic anticipation. Meanwhile, Horsham YMCA are currently enjoying a successful run, transporting them over a dozen places up the table in as many games, enabling supporters to think what was previously unthinkable – say it quietly so as not to put the kiss of death on the prospect – but promotion is a possibility, YM have recently beaten several top clubs. Elevation would put them up to the same level as Horsham with some mouth watering local derbies. On the cricket front, the return of

Sussex to play another county at Horsham Cricket Club, resuming the very longstanding tradition so greatly enjoyed by players and followers of the game would be relished. And, in Sunday cricket, at Nuthurst, where visitors love to experience competitive, social non league games, developments are afoot – first with the erection of a storage building, hopefully to be followed in 2018 by the demolition of the stalwart but long outmoded old pavilion and installation of least the shell of its replacement. Slinfold CC are also hoping for a new pavilion and there are impressive plans

for exciting new arrangements for both cricket and football at Southwater. Roffey won the Sussex Premier League in 2014, 2015 and 2016 and the Sussex Cup last season. Will their settled team be able to continue their impressive acquisition of silverware? At Horsham Rugby Club the establishment of the separate new changing room block gives the opportunity to develop the former changing facilities into social space. And, the club will be getting the only artificial pitch in Sussex, providing the opportunity to host representative games. Pulborough RFC have been promoted to their highest ever level, presenting a

New season Grays and Kookaburra hockey in stock. Canterbury & Gilbert rugby boots and protective gear in stock. Updating of annual cups and awards engraved on-site

formidable challenge for a small club, especially when pitted against some of the large, well-established metropolitan sides. Boro’s continuation and consolidation in their new league is their Christmas wish. Similar hopes are expressed for Horsham Men’s 1st XI hockey team, currently in the process of rebuilding. Meanwhile Horsham Ladies 1s, with their mix of experience and youth, are presently lurking just below the potential promotion zone. Good luck from the District Post to all of our local teams in every sport for 2018!
