Horsham’s community gem martin read
Reporter
Horsham is extraordinarily fortunate to have the Drill Hall in Denne Road, host venue to many interesting community activities. The Drill Hall was built for the local Battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment in 1927 and after the Territorial Army moved out, Horsham District Council became custodians and landlords of the building. The hall has always been used for a wide range of social activities – in the 1930s the Hollywood Circus put on a show featuring 40 artists and, incredibly, 1500 people attended an Empire Day celebration, clearly well before today’s health and safety considerations. And, photographs in the building show a very popular old time hunt ball, and an equally packed dinner for staff of a local company. There were much enjoyed dances, too, taking advantage of the sprung wooden floor. More recently the battle of the bands attracted a 500 strong audience. The main hall is used for conferences, election hustings, awards ceremonies, church, political and campaign meetings, social dances and rehearsals, charity and disability events, community shows, concerts, dance competitions, Sussex Art-
ists’ exhibitions, Guides, Scouts and club functions, beer festivals and a wealth of other activities including the forthcoming Horsham District Jobs and Skills Fair. The Drill Hall also hosts wellbeing, environmental and safety courses and seminars and it is a popular location for wedding, christening, family and retirement parties, where the spacious, well appointed, licensed venue is greatly appreciated. While Tuesday’s ballroom and Latin classes and Wednesday’s social dance evenings and club gatherings are regular mainstays, along with jive sessions, there is much more to be discovered and enjoyed. The substantial Drill Hall building contains a variety of smaller meeting rooms suitable for office use and a surprisingly varied list of activities, including drama workshops and concerts. There is also an artist studio and a bespoke recording studio for the local weekly talking newspaper for those with sight impairment. The iconic, versatile Drill Hall has a few wrinkles, only to be expected in a character-filled but stately vintage lady, but the district’s residents are indeed lucky to be able to benefit from the town’s outstanding community venue. Next Wednesday (19th) sees the annual Horsham District Jobs Fair take residence for the day. The Drill Hall, Denne Road, Horsham, RH12 1JF – 01403 211436 www.drill.hall@horsham.gov. uk

Join the Fight Against Food Waste Food waste makes up nearly a third of the average rubbish bin in West Sussex. This is the equivalent of nearly 20 rubbish trucks full of food being thrown away every day - and throwing food away costs. On average, residents in West Sussex are binning the equivalent of £20 per month per person - or £70 per month for a family of four! This is why the West Sussex Waste Partnership is organising a campaign over the coming months to encourage residents to join their fight against food waste. The campaign will raise awareness on food waste and provide advice on how to ‘be a smart shopper’, ‘freeze with ease’ and ‘love your leftovers’. To kick off the campaign, MasterChef Champion 2018 Kenny Tutt joined the partnership on Thursday 30 August on Chichester Cathedral Green and on Thursday 6 September at Memorial Gardens, Crawley. Kenny delivered a culinary masterclass, focusing on how to ‘love your leftovers’, by turning food which may have ended up in the bin into delicious dishes. In the lead up to the events, Kenny said: “I am thrilled to be working with my local waste partnership on this exciting new campaign and I can’t wait to show fellow residents in West Sussex how to create some quick and easy food from what potentially could have ended up in the bin. There are so many great things you can do with leftovers from vibrant curries to beautiful casseroles or soups, but often
people just need a few pointers to get them started.” In West Sussex, 70% of food waste could have been eaten at some point prior to being thrown away. Of that, 41% is just not used in time, and 25% is binned because we cook or prepare too much. Deborah Urquhart, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Environment, had expressed excitement to have Kenny headline the events. She
I am thrilled to be working with my local waste partnership on this exciting new campaign further explained: “It’s hard to believe how much of the food we buy is wasted, and that there are a lot of steps we could take to prevent so much of it going in the bin; like prepping and freezing food we aren’t going to use, and shopping smarter so we only buy the things we need. “It has become more apparent that something needs to be done and we’re hoping that our ‘Fight Against Food Waste’ campaign will stop people from automatically throwing food waste in the bin and will encourage our residents to think before they throw.” For more information about the campaign, please visit www. wastepreventionwestsussex. co.uk

Your chance to have your say on key Horsham site’s future
Proposals for the former Novartis site in Horsham will be presented for public consultation later this month. The county council purchased the site in December, 2016, to build on its long-established position as a major employment centre. Feasibility and design work has been taking place to develop proposals for a mix of business and residential use to meet local needs. A community stakeholder event was held in July to look at

initial suggestions and now the public can view the draft proposals at an information event at The Holbrook Club, North Heath Lane, Horsham RH12 5PJ. People can talk to members of the project team and provide feedback, any time between 4pm and 9pm on Wednesday, 26 September. Louise Goldsmith, county council Leader, said: “We believe the exciting proposals for this prime Horsham site present a great opportunity to provide a mixture of much needed, high-
quality business space and new homes - but we really want to hear what people think about them. Feedback from this public consultation will be invaluable.” Approximately two-thirds of the site is planned for commercial developmen,t to create and support higher-value employment, and one-third for residential development, which will include affordable housing. The 1930s Art Deco building will be retained. It is expected that an outline planning application will be submitted to Horsham District Council later this year. Work on the site is not expected to begin before 2021 and could take around five years to complete. Anyone who cannot attend the information event will be able to view and comment on the proposals online, via the county council’s Have Your Say consultation hub, from 26 September. The county council purchased the site from global health care company, Novartis, for £16million, and the authority received £3.66million from the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership Local Growth Fund, towards the cost of the acquisition.
Appeal for witnesses following forklift ram raid in Rudgwick
Police would like to speak to anyone who saw, or heard, a ram raid at the Co-op in Rudgwick on Sunday (9 September). Officers attended the store in Martletts Corner, Rudgwick, near Horsham, around 2.45am, after members of the public witnessed a cash machine being stolen. A JCB telescopic forklift was used to smash the glass of the shop and pull the free-standing machine out, before it was loaded onto the back of a 4x4 vehicle. The 4x4 vehicle, and a silver Subaru, believed to be connected to the three suspects, left the scene heading south to the A281. The JCB, stolen from Horsham, was left at
the scene. Detective Constable Kirstie Neal said: “We are appealing for anyone with information on this incident to come forward to us immediately. “This crime occurred in the middle of the night, when the suspects knew there would be fewer witnesses, but they would have made a large amount of noise. Did you get woken up by it? “The three suspects wore dark clothing and masks covering their faces, and were at the scene for around five minutes.” To report information please go online, call 101 quoting 180 of 09/09 or anonymously through Crimestoppers.

Research into her condition has led Philippa to a facility in Russia, at which she has been accepted to begin trials for a Hematopoi-
etic stem cell transplant HSCT. Unfortunately, Philippa does not meet NHS funding criteria for this treatment, which she described as being an: “amazing treatment now available which will stop further progression of the disease and may cause regression.” In a video, which accompanies her GoFundMe page, Philippa explained: “I’ve been doing a lot of research on hospitals; Speaking to a lot of patients who’ve been to get this done. And I’ve found the best hospital to go to, which is in Russia, and I’ve been accepted onto the trials now. So I need to urgently raise funds to pay for it.” Philippa is striving to keep as well as she can. Damage to her eyes has meant that she can no longer drive. Despite this, she attends regular exercise classes and is a volunteer: “It’s nice to give something back. It keeps my mind active, which is another important key thing, I think.” If you would like to help Philippa reach her goal, please visit: https://www.gofundme. com/sgqwh-daring-to-dream
Still time to win free travel for your local school or extra-curricular group
- Thursday -
Still time to win free travel for your local school or extra-curricular group Southern Transit is reminding the county’s residents that there is still time to nominate their local school or extra-curricular group to win free travel as part of its 2018 ‘Splendid Trips’ campaign. Launched earlier this year, amidst the ongoing educational funding crisis in Sussex, Southern Transit - one of Sussex’s leading and last remaining independently run bus and coach companies has already treated Southgate and Storrington Primary Schools to free travel. The schools took their pupils on their planned trips to Chessington World of Adventures and Fishers Farm respectively, but thanks to the free travel, collectively saved over £1500. Southern Transit is now offering two more free trips in 2018 and is inviting anyone - parents, friends, teachers, leaders, and Sussex residents alike - to nominate schools and extra-curricular groups
(Scouts, Brownies, charity groups, youth and sports clubs etc), who could benefit from free travel for their children. The prize on offer is free day-return travel, in October or December 2018, on one of Southern Transit’s new 72-seater ‘Citymaster’ vehicles, to a destination within the South of England. That’s not all though - to make sure the youngsters certainly do have a ‘Splendid Trip’, the bus company will also organise a special, surprise treat for the guests aboard the bus. Sue Rose, Operations Director at Southern Transit, commented: “I’m sure all of us remember our school outings and look back with fond memories. It would be a terrible shame if today’s youngsters were unable to benefit from the same learning and friendship building experiences outside of the classroom, because the school’s purse-strings simply don’t allow it. “Whilst I appreciate we cannot help every organisation, I hope that parents, teachers, and Sussex resi-
dents alike can see the merits of our ‘Splendid Trips’ campaign. The benefit of us offering travel on one of our Citymasters is that we can fit more people on board, in comparison to standard coach hire, allowing more children to enjoy a day out. We look forward to receiving the next batch of nominations over the coming months and announcing our next winners.” Nominations should be emailed to southerntransit@pmwcom. co.uk or posted to Southern Transit’s ‘Splendid Trips’, c/o PMW Communications, Stane Court, Stane Street, Billingshurst, West Sussex. RH14 9HP. Every nomination should include the school or organisation’s name, contact details, planned trip destination and potential dates (Oct or Dec only), along with the nominee’s contact details. The closing date for the second round of nominations is midnight on Friday 21 September 2018.

Slimming World success voted Woman of the Year
Natalie Dunne Local woman Natalie Dunne recently celebrated being voted Woman of the Year at her Saturday morning Slimming World group, at St Leonards Church. Natalie has lost an amazing 3 ½ stone since joining Slimming World. She explained: “I joined Slimming World, as my mum was joining and I did not want be the only overweight person in my family! More though, I also wanted to do it for myself and
my family, and to change my way of eating. When I joined Slimming World I really loved their extra easy plan. I soon realised that it’s not a diet at all, and, in fact, all about healthy eating and a lifestyle change that has been beneficial to my whole family. “My weight loss journey took a while, but you learn that its your journey, and it takes as long as you need it to. I was never judged, even when I had gained
some weight. I always received so much support from both groups I have attended . I think that what helped kept me on track was always staying to group, getting the support from the members and consultant, and sharing lots of ideas. It is amazing to watch other peoples’ journeys but of course I am so happy about my own! When I look back at pictures I can’t believe it was me and that I had got to that size, but now I love having photos taken! “Getting voted by my group to be their Woman of the Year was amazing, and topped of a great few months after reaching my target earlier this year. “Anyone thinking of joining Slimming World should just do it! Every group is so friendly, and I am now part of the Social team helping run the group, and I just enjoy seeing everyone each week. It really is like a group of friends meeting each week!” Andy, Natalie’s consultant, is extremely proud of Natalie and her weight loss success: “Natalie was in the group I attended as a member, and is now part of my group, and has been so supportive of both my journey and now of our group! She is there every week to help our members and I really appreciate everything she does”. You can find your local group by visiting www.slimmingworld. co.uk

Horsham District Jobs and Skills Fair 2018 – Exhibitors announced
The Horsham District Jobs and Skills Fair, organised by Horsham District Council, returns this year with more exhibitors than ever before, many from new and different sectors. On 19 September, some 40 organisations will be at Horsham’s Drill Hall in Denne Road, Horsham, with hundreds of
employment, voluntary, training, and apprenticeship opportunities on offer. The Jobs and Skills Fair will run from 11am to 3pm and is sponsored by the Federation of Small Businesses, with support from Horsham Jobcentre Plus, The District Post, and Collyer’s College.
Over the past three years, the Fair has seen some 130 employers offer nearly 1500 opportunities to job hunters, and students, and the events have been visited by over 1400 people. Not only that, within weeks of these events, hundreds of people have found a new positon or a new career path, as well as receiving plenty of advice about careers and job searching. Current confirmed employers this year include regulars, Assurity Consulting, and Metricell LTP; engineering firms Trend Control Systems (part of the Honeywell Group), and Stoba Präzisionstechnik UK Limited; as well as local outlets of national hospitality chains, Beefeater, and Smith and Western (newcomers this year). There will also be a wide selection of colleges, training organisations, and apprenticeship opportunities, showcasing their courses and programmes. One top growth organisation exhibiting for the first time this year is high-tech firm Chess Dynamics. Chess Dynamics is
an established leading design and manufacturing business, with several sites across the UK, servicing the surveillance and defense industries. Commenting on the event,
All ages and abilities are welcome, so come along and enjoy the free facilities on offer Cabinet Member for the Local Economy, Cllr Gordon Lindsay said: “This is a free event for anyone who is job hunting, thinks they want to change their job, start a new career or get some training to do something completely different. “The Jobs and Skills Fair has a
great track record and over the last three years has successfully placed hundreds of local people into local jobs and training schemes. It’s a win, win for our local economy. “All ages and abilities are welcome, so come along and enjoy the free facilities on offer.” For a full list of employers, please visit the District Council website: https://www.horsham. gov.uk/jobs-and-careers/emploment-and-skills/horshamdistrict-jobs-and-skills-fair As well as loads of jobs and other opportunities, there will, once again, be employability workshops to help you develop your CV, interview techniques and job applications. The National Careers Service will be delivering these free workshops, but places are limited so get there early. The Jobs and Skills Fair is open from 11am and closes at 3pm, and Beeches Buffet will be on hand to provide drinks and cakes. Picture: Jeremy Quin MP meeting exhibitors at last year’s Jobs Fair
Horsham Rugby Club Dark Star Brewing to sponsor The Barns longstanding sponsor Green Half Marathon and 10km races cheers new facilities
The new all weather pitch at Horsham Rugby Club is now ready for the first team to make their mark this season having been officially launched earlier this month. Longstanding club sponsor Henry Adams chartered surveyors, sales & lettings agency has updated their signage which has now been moved to its new position alongside the state-of-theart artificial grass pitch. Henry Adams has sponsored the club each year since 2011 during which time it’s changed significantly. “We’ve been keen supporters of our local rugby club for a number of years now, as sponsors and members, and we’re delighted to see the ongoing development as it goes from strength to strength,” said Robert Crawford Clarke, partner at Henry Adams.
“The artificial grass pitch looks superb and this, combined with the recent new changing rooms development and the various other ongoing projects at the Club is generating a real buzz about the place which we are delighted to be part of. “Horsham Rugby Club has very inclusive, community approach with lots of events, both sporting and social, and a very hard-working committee, coach and, of course, players. On Saturday 15 September, the first team will be playing at home against Beckenham and everyone’s welcome to come along and cheer from the touchlines.” The club, which is located in located in Hammerpond Road, Horsham, has a clear philosophy to develop players of all standards to reach their potential and welcomes all players, young and old.
The Dark Star Brewing Co has become the main sponsor of this year’s Barns Green Half Marathon and 10km race, which take place on Sunday 30 September. Dark Star joins Networks Centre, Bluecoat Sports Centre, and MoreThan, as sponsors of this long standing local event. Perhaps best known for its iconic session beer, Hophead, the Dark Star Brewing Company is based in Partridge Green, just south west of Horsham, and recently won the Champion Strong Beer of Britain, with their beer, Revelation. James Cuthbertson, Managing Director of Dark Star Brewing Co. said: “We are delighted to be sponsoring The Barns Green Half Marathon and 10km races. This great local event raises a lot of money for good causes, and falls in line with our desire to make a positive impact in our local community, as we do via the Dark Star Foundation. “A huge amount of work goes into staging the event, and, after the races, all runners with a medal can join us at our beer festival, Hopfest, in Partridge Green, for some live music, and great food and drink, and your medal will entitle you to free entry and a free pint, courtesy of Dark Star”. The Chairman of the Barns Green Half Marathon Committee, Vernon Jennings, commented: “It is wonderful to have Dark Star Brewing involved with our race this year. We are extremely proud of what the race has been able to achieve, and, each year, the event gets bigger, with more runners and spectators. Our charity this year is, once again,
Vernon Jennings (l), Chairman of the Barns Green Half Marathon and 10k, enjoying a pint with Dark Star’s James Rushforth
St Catherine’s Hospice. Because of the involvement of our sponsors, we will be able to allocate even more funds to our chosen charity, as well as to the various local and junior organisations, societies, and clubs, that help organise the event on the day.” This year will be the 36th running of the Barns Green Half Marathon, and the 3rd year of the new 10km race, which, last year, attracted almost 600 runners. The event is organized and run entirely by volunteers, and all the money raised goes towards supporting local clubs, sports clubs, and socie-
ties, as well as different charities. Since the event began in 1982, this unique village event has raised a huge amount of money for charity. Last year, over 2,000 runners registered to take part in the two races which run through some of the most scenic countryside in West Sussex, including the grounds of Christ’s Hospital School. In the school grounds, the magnificent Christ’s Hospital School marching band will be playing, as all the runners go passed, providing a great spectacle and boost for all those taking part.

World champ may shed tear on return to scene of greatest victory after 36-year absence
Mandy Bishop will make an ‘emotional’ first return to West Sussex at Vélo South – almost four decades since she was crowned World Road cycling champion on her last visit. Mandy, now 56, and husband Nigel, will be among 15,000 riders of all abilities taking on the 100-mile closed-road sportive, which starts and finishes at Goodwood, on Sunday, September 23. The inaugural Vélo South will be Mandy’s first visit to the region in any capacity, since becoming the darling of a euphoric West Sussex crowd at the UCI Road World Championships in 1982. Competing under maiden name ‘Jones’, Mandy, just 20, struck gold for Great Britain in the women’s road race at Goodwood – the last UK venue to host the event. Vélo South will make those unforgettable memories even more vivid for Mandy, as the scene of her greatest cycling victory is central to this year’s picturesque route, while the event also takes place almost 36 years to the day. Just like the course on Septem-
ber 5, 1982, the Vélo South route features the Goodwood Motor Circuit and Kennel Hill, which hosted the start and finish line at the UCI Road World Championships. As US and Tour de France legend, Greg LeMond, finished second in the men’s event, Mandy booked her place in the pantheon of British cycling legends by attacking the strongest riders in the sport on the final of four, closed-road, eight-mile laps, winning by ten seconds. “I’m really looking forward to Vélo South, going back to the scene of my greatest achievement and sharing that experience with my husband, who I wasn’t with at the time,” said Mandy, who runs Fawkes Cycles, an Oldham-based cycling mail order business, with Nigel. “It was 36 years ago – it’s scary how time flies. Over the years, you think it would be nice to go back, so when I heard about Vélo South, I jumped at the chance. “The main reason I’ve never been back to Goodwood, or West Sussex, to relive those memories is that it would have been strange cycling the 1982 course again
when there’s no-one around. “With Velo South, there’s going to be a fantastic atmosphere, which will make cycling around the lanes where I won really special. “It will be quite emotional. It will bring back loads of great memories, and I’m also looking forward to the gorgeous scenery of the whole route.” Although all general entry places for Vélo South have sold out, West Sussex residents who missed out can still join Mandy after being offered a second chance to ride, with organisers creating a limited number of places for participants who live on or near the route. Email hello@velosouth.com with your details to find out more. Vélo South is expected to raise a substantial amount for both local and national charities and prospective participants can also enter through one of the event’s Lead Charity Partners – British Heart Foundation, Alzheimer’s Society, Age UK and Restart Rugby – or via the Vélo South Business 100 challenge, which offers VIP networking opportunities and training events for corporate teams. With around 1,700m of climbing, Vélo South is relatively challenging, but the beauty of the route, including the rolling hills of the South Downs National Park, and support from local communities, will make for an unforgettable day of closed-road riding. What really stood out during the greatest day of Mandy’s cycling career were the West Sussex crowds that cheered her on, and she is hoping the 15,000 Vélo South cyclists receive similar levels of backing across the entire route, as they pedal through the pain barrier. “When I started the last climb up to the finish line, all the people were shouting my name and letting me know where the
other riders were – the crowd was unbelievable,” added Mandy, who was forced to retire from cycling after damaging a spinal disc while training for the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. “It gave me a fantastic lift, especially as my legs were about to explode. The crowds kept me going. “Some people even camped out overnight to make sure they had the best spot to watch the race, including my parents, who kept them entertained. There’s a great photo of them jiving in a local pub the night before! “I’d encourage West Sussex people to come out and support the riders, as cycling 100 miles is really tough. When they see all the different ability levels taking part, it may encourage some to get on a bike themselves. Cycling is not just about keeping fit, it’s also really social and a great way to make new friends. “Closed-road events are fantastic, as cyclists can relax so much more without having to worry about traffic. Unless they enter races, it’s an experience people will never have. For some, it will feel like they’re on the Tour de France.” Mandy became only the second British woman to win the world championship and the feat has only been repeated twice, by Nicole Cooke in 2008 and Lizzie Deignan (née Armistead) in 2015. Her gold medal sits proudly in a frame on the bedroom wall. So did West Sussex stage the greatest day of her life? Getting married and the births of my two children are the most special, but it was certainly the best sporting day of my life,” added Mandy, who recently celebrated her 25th wedding anniversary with Nigel, a former GB amateur road race cyclist and Milk Race leader, having worn the yellow jersey at the 1989 event. “But as far as absolute and
utter euphoria, then yes. Preparing for (and winning) an event is not an instant thing. There’s the build-up – years and years of training. Things can go wrong, you need lady luck on your side and for everything to go to plan on the day, including not being ill. That’s why, when that all comes together and you win, it’s such a brilliant feeling. “I was among the favourites in 1982 in the sense that I won bronze at the world championships in Sallanches, France, two years earlier. But I rode awfully in the world individualpursuit event in Leicester the week before. Because of that, expectations were lower, but I was still the Great Britain team leader, so I was in with a chance.” One thing’s for certain – Mandy is going to have to ride a lot further to cross the Vélo South finish line than she did in 1982! “The distance women were allowed to race was far less than it is now,” admitted the Littleborough resident, who rides socially with the ABC Centreville Cycling Club, Manchester. “I don’t think the four laps of the course totalled much more than 36 miles. “I haven’t ridden 100 miles in a long time – at least five or six years. I’m desperately trying to get into some form of fitness, having had tendonitis in my arms throughout the winner, which kept me off my bike.” Mandy’s 1982 memories are also certain to come flooding back next year, when the UCI Road World Championships return to the UK for the first time since Goodwood hosted her triumph: “It’ll be fantastic to see the worlds return to Britain – I’ll certainly be going to Harrogate to watch them!” For more information about Vélo South, please visit: www. velosouth.com Facebook.com/Velosouth100 Twitter.com/Velosouth
Economy of Ecology coming to The Hawth Theatre Come along to The Hawth in Crawley on Saturday 22 September to hear an urgent and provocative story about human relationships, communications and our impact on the natural world. Scientist Steve is on a long haul flight. His partner has just left him. Travelling home on a crowded aeroplane across the Atlantic, he feels suddenly dislocated and alone. In a world of touch screens and social robots, he has lost the ability to make meaningful bonds with other people. He makes a decision that will eventually force him to face his own inability to make a connection. He decides to talk to the nervous passenger sitting next to him.
In a forest thousands of miles away, a sapling pokes its head through the leafy forest floor. Beneath the soil, its roots begin to scramble for the one thing that guarantees its survival - a connection. Blending stunning visuals and urgent storytelling, Economy of Ecology uncovers the power of human touch and the unexpected links between all things: from a man on an aeroplane who is scared of flying, to the underground fungal networks of Oregon’s Blue Mountains. Performance: Saturday 22 September 7.45pm, The Hawth Crawley. Tickets: £16 (Discounts: £14), available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 and online: www.hawth.co.uk.

Have a ‘crack’ for local charities to win BIG Just like in Ocean’s Eleven or The Italian Job, visitors to Horsham town centre in West Sussex are invited to try their hand at cracking a safe tomorrow (Saturday 15 September) for the chance to win an incredible prize - a luxurious new caravan worth over £25,000. The competition is being organised by Roundstone Caravans - one of the UK’s only remaining independent and family-run caravan businesses - to celebrate the arrival of their new Compass range of touring caravans. Throughout the day, in Horsham’s Carfax market area, visitors will have the opportunity to crack the six-digit code on the safe. If the winning combination is entered, the safe will ping open and the keys to the entrant’s new Compass Camino 550 caravan will await. Whilst the competition is free to enter, Roundstone Caravans is encouraging participants to make a small donation of their choice to Horsham’s Rotary Club, which helps charities and local families across the county. Rosie Kent, owner of Roundstone Caravans and great-granddaughter of John William White-
house, who founded the business in 1930, said: “We are very excited to be running this competition to celebrate the arrival of our new Compass caravan range and help raise vital funds for local charities. It’s a huge prize to win and hopefully we will be able to give one lucky person the chance to experience the joys of exploring the UK (and even the world) and most importantly help them create lots of wonderful new travel memories. “On the day, not only are we running this competition but we will
also be giving away a number of free treats to Horsham visitors and displaying one of our new Compass caravan models. As many people have never considered caravanning before - not realising how the vehicles have evolved over the years and now feature so many of the creature comforts we can no longer leave behind - this is a great opportunity for inquisitive shoppers to explore the new models and see just what they have to offer.”
Horsham model railway club celebrates 10th anniversary
Horsham Model Railway Club is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Since its early days in a local youth centre, it has grown steadily and now has over 50 members, who meet every Wednesday at the St Leonard’s Church Hall in Cambridge Road, Horsham. Four layouts are currently under construction. Sunny Hill is the simplest, providing opportunities for the club’s younger members to develop basic railway modelling skills. An N gauge model of Worting Junction, the point at which the lines from London to Southampton and Exeter via Salisbury divide, is nearing
completion, and will be seen at various model railway exhibitions from the autumn onwards. Twofils, a large OO layout, and Quarry Lane, a tiered OO9 layout, featuring various mining and quarrying activities, are under construction. For several years, HMRC has taken a vacant shop unit in the town shopping centre during the February school half-term holidays, and has exhibited one or more layouts for a week. This regularly attracts around 3.500 adult visitors and many children. In addition to its modelling activities, the club has arranged visits to railway attractions. Last year, 16
members visited the Didcot Railway Centre before travelling on to the nearby Pendon Museum. To celebrate its 10th anniversary, the club is holding a model railway exhibition at the Drill Hall in Denne Road on Saturday October 6. The exhibition will run from 10am to 5pm and will feature 14 layouts, at various scales and gauges. Sunny Hill will be there as a ‘have-a-go’ layout, which has proved popular with young visitors at previous open days, and during the club’s regular appearances in Swan Walk during the February half-term break. There will also be traders, selling new and second-hand model railway items. The charge for adults will be £5. Children under 10 will go free while those between 10 and 16 will pay £2. A family ticket, for two adults and two children will be £12. Light refreshments will be available and we are hoping to be able to project images from a train simulator onto the wall of the refreshment area. A club representative said: “We are hoping to be able to have a ‘ride-on’ railway operating in the space behind the Drill Hall. We hope to be able to show a simulation of the Horsham to Shoreham route, long since gone but fondly remembered by many people in this part of Sussex.”

Greatest Day had by all at St Catherine’s Hospice Live at the Lake at Tilgate Park
Picture Credit: Sara Fermore Tilgate Park was buzzing as St Catherine’s Hospice’s brand new, festival-inspired event, Live at the Lake, took place on Saturday (8 September). Kicking off the fun-filled day was a live DJ, who played the latest tunes, as more than 2,500 visitors enjoyed a range of family friendly entertainment, including a children’s disco, sand art, a glitter station, an inflatable dragon, and merchandise stalls. As the evening neared, crowds got ready for some world class performances from top tribute acts MacBusted and ReTake That. MacBusted were first to step on stage, and got the crowd going with their energetic performance of classic hits like Crashed the Wedding and Stacey’s Mum. As dusk drew, excitement grew for the headline performance from ReTake That, who’ve been described as the best tribute act you’ll ever see. And the band certainly didn’t disappoint! Their electric performance had the crowd singing and dancing along to many Take That favourites, including Relight my
Fire, Back for Good, Rule the World, Patience, and Never Forget. Paul Waite, Re-Take That’s very own Gary Barlow, said: “It was brilliant to perform in Tilgate Park on Saturday. There was a fantastic crowd and knowing we were singing for such a great, local cause, made the evening even more special. We really enjoyed our time in Crawley and hope that everyone who came along had as good a time as us!” St Catherine’s is thrilled with the success of their very first Live at the Lake event. Hannah Shorter, Events Project Fundraiser at St Catherine’s, said: “I’d like to thank everyone who joined us on Saturday. You all helped to create an amazing atmosphere! Currently, St Catherine’s can only care for one in three people who need us, but with our community’s support, in the future, we want to be there for everyone who needs us.” To find out about future St Catherine’s events, or how you can support the hospice, please visit: www.stch.org.uk.

Owner and Director, Paul Davies feels that their success is very much down to the quality of the team, their expertise in online property marketing given the changing behaviour of the buying market (Paul has written a thesis on online marketing strategies) and focus on customer service. @Home act as a co-operative and have a 25% employee profit share, so you always find the team going above and beyond the call of duty. They also pride themselves on being very community focused, donating £150 of their fee from every sale to a community based, voluntary run and local organisation of the seller’s choice Paul says, “We’re delighted to be able to support our growth with our new branch. I started my career in this shop as an 11-year-old paperboy in 1992 and I’m so excited to come full circle and expand our business here.
Our family very much has roots here, with my grandfather having been responsible for building property on Guildford Road, Pondtail Road, The Crescent and Hillside, among other places and having several generations of my family live on these roads. It’s an exciting step for the future and we have recruited, and are looking to recruit further, to support both of our branches and our business growth’. Apart from nostalgic reasons, there were some key features that influenced the decision to locate here. The free parking is great for clients and the hassle of parking in the town centre means that it is more convenient to do business with @Home than any other town centre located agency. The reduced rates and rents also mean that @Home can keep their fees below 1% while still offering their all-inclusive package of professional photography, virtual reality tours, 100% accompanied viewings, premium and featured adverts, adverts on all of the property portal sites and no contract tie in. These features have helped @Home rapidly establish brand presence in a very competitive market.” If you’d like to know more, why not come along to the launch at the new premises on the 21st September for nibbles or visit http://www.athomeestates. co.uk/.

Pulborough fight back hard with gritty win Saturday September 8 – London 3 South East Pulborough 35 31 Lewes Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Pulborough clawed back a heavy deficit before successfully closing down the game to win their first encounter back in the London SE3 league. Depleted Lewes scored after five minutes with an unconverted try before play was stopped for 20 minutes when injured visitors’ full back Dan Wade had to be taken to hospital. Despite the set back, Lewes scored two more tries, both converted to lead 0-19. Stung into action, Boro responded with a try from Simon Burfiend in
the corner, ahead of Captain Frazer Oliphant-Hope getting over more centrally and selfconverting, Boro trailing 12-19 at the break. Restarting, Boro kept pressing and tries from Nick Haynes and Harrison Short, the second maximised by Frazer who then added six points from penalties to give Boro a 30-19 lead, which Lewes promptly reduced with an unconverted try. But, Oliver Burnett latched onto a kick and pressed it down for five more Boro points. Lewes, though were not about to give in easily, their late converted try leaving the score tantalisingly poised on 35-31, however despite further pressure from the visitors, Boro held firm for a gritty win. On Saturday Boro travel to Hellingly.
Horsham celebrate season at annual Awards Night Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter At their annual end of season awards night Horsham reviewed their season of mixed fortunes, the problem of availabilities again featuring strongly. After being there or thereabouts, the 1st XI finished 5th in the Premier League, having beaten champions Roffey with an exceptionally strong team and putting paid to last years champions, East Grinstead – against whom Tom Johnson scored a memorable hundred, also at Cricketfield Road. Captain Michael Thornely was pleased to be able to call on the services of Sussex’s Will Beer, Tom Haines (three hundreds and two fifties), George Garton and Jofra Archer and recalled match-winning performances by Garton – 87 not out at Brighton - and Mika Ekstrom’s last ball six to clinch victory against Hastings. Batting award winner Thornely named Joe Ashmore as his player of the season his first for the club – saying: “He’s played every game and has been a pleasure to captain.” Ashmore took 31 league wickets and scored useful runs, Thornely summing up by saying: “On our day we can wipe the floor with any team, as we’ve proved, but if we wish to finish higher in 2019 and truly compete for the title (as we should) then we have to ask for greater commitment throughout, and if we get that I have no doubt that it would result in us taking the league down to the final weekend at least if not winning it.” After winning their first game by 150 runs, the 2nd XI under Omkar Khot struggled
to find consistency. The stand out performance was Tom Johnson’s thunderous double century against Pagham, and it was encouraging to see some good performances from young players, auguring well for the future. The 3rd XI were in with a chance of the title, with juniors doing well, but again availability was an issue, as was also the case with the 4th XI, causing the cancellation of five games and ultimately resulting in relegation. James Brehaut was 2nd XI Player of the Season with Joe Willis and Simon Hughes winning the 3rd and 4th XI citations. The Thursday XI enjoyed another successful season with excellent team spirit and more Horsham players turning out regularly. Ekstrom contributed heavily with both bat and ball and Tom Haynes and Jake Cross scored three centuries between them. Horsham Ladies championship finished positively with five wins on the bounce, the bowling being particularly strong. Flora Bertwistle was voted Senior Player of the Season with 18 wickets and 155 runs, while Sophie Whittington carried off the Under 21 award. There are plans to reinstate the junior girls section for 2019. All of the Horsham Captains paid particular tribute to the essential and much-valued ground staff, scorers, umpires, selection committee, caterers, bar staff and office administrators, without whom the teams could not function. Cricket is now over for this season at Cricketfield Road – the ground will again be used for adult and junior football on Saturdays and Sundays until next April.

Dream start for Horsham RUFC’s new season
Photo by Richard Ordidge Saturday September 8 – London 2 South East Maidstone 23 50 Horsham Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham avenged Maidstone’s 95-12 drubbing in the clubs’ last encounter in 2013. Then, the hosts were flying high, but now they are looking to regain London 1 status
after last season’s relegation. At the Mote last Saturday, although Declan Nwachukwu scored an impressive try, Maidstone made the early running, but were unable to penetrate the Horsham defence – until the Green and Whites notched up another five points from Michael Tredgett. The hosts responded with two successful penalty kicks, but these were interspersed with tries from Nwachukwu and
Richard Tredgett, Tom Johnson converting twice, including an outstanding kick from the touch line to give Horsham a healthy 24-6 lead at the break and a four try bonus point. Horsham resumed the punishment when Johnny Ordidge supplied teenager Vince Everitt to complete under the posts. Maidstone then reduced the deficit with a try of their own, but Horsham responded with a Jordan Bell try in the corner before Nwachukwu posted his hat trick, which with two Johnson conversions gave Horsham a 43-11 lead on the hour mark. Maidstone got over the line again, only for debutant Joe Blake to restore Horsham’s winning margin with Johnson’s boot then taking Horsham to 50 points, a late try and conversion being scant consolation for the hosts. Horsham’s delighted Assistant Coach Wes Bell said: “We showed quality across the pitch, clinical finishing and good shape and structure while scoring eight tries! We had five players on debut, including 18 year old Joe Blake. Our scrum was very powerful and line outs improved as the day went on. The backs looked very dangerous, too and in the pack we showed great ball carrying skills. We gave away too many penalties, which we’ll address at training on Tuesday and Thursday, and we left 15 points out there, but I’m very pleased with such a fantastic start to our league campaign.” Horsham play their first league game on their excellent all weather pitch this Saturday against Beckenham.
Roffey sunk in last ball confusion Sunday September 9 - Sussex Gray-Nicholls T20 Cup Final East Grinstead 144-6 (20 overs) Roffey 144-8 (20 overs) Scores level but East Grinstead won by losing fewer wickets Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Roffey failed to retain their Sussex Cup crown by a hair’s breadth at the county’s Hove HQ last Sunday. To a neutral observer it was good game of cricket, demonstrably close, but for Roffey supporters accustomed to seeing their side win – of which there were many at Hove – it was a case of so desperately near, but so despairingly far with some debatable factors along the way. East Grinstead’s strength is their bowling – the opening pairing of ex Sussex player Lewis Hatchett and Ian Sturmer taking 76 Premier League wickets between them, but batting second they have been bowled out cheaply, so, after winning the toss they elected to take first strike. They were without Fynn Hudson-Prentice who, in the morning, had been fielding as a substitute for England in the Oval Test (along with Horsham’s Nick Oxley). Just one run came off Rohit Jagota’s first over, but Grinstead soon picked up and were cruising along when George Fleming’s direct hit ran out Turner. Fleming struck again in the seventh over, accounting for Leo Cammish, courtesy of a fine overhead boundary catch by Chris
Webb. Another bowling change brought about a wicket in the tenth over, Ollie Graham departing LBW, mowing across the line to Luke Barnard, and at the half way stage Grinstead were 72-3, before Theo Rivers’ diving catch in the deep reduced them to 94-4 in the 16th over, boundaries having dried up. Clearly Grinstead needed more runs and although two more wickets fell Captain Will Adkin with 45 and Sturmer and Brad Hatchett with 12 apiece pressed on with a mixture of sound and fortunate shots to set a 145 run target, 10 more than Roffey had wished. In reply Lewis Hatchett conceded just two runs off his first two overs, with Roffey’s chances perhaps resting on the performance of Grinstead’s support bowlers. Paul Harrison was going well and when Roffey passed 50 for the loss of just one wicket they were ideally placed to accelerate – until Jagota was given out caught behind after the intervention of the surprisingly not un-sighted square leg umpire, surmising that the ball had bounced up not from the ground, but from the boot to the keeper. The devastated batsman had been in good form with over 700 league runs under his belt, so this was a bitter blow for Roffey, but Harrison and Matt Davies kept chasing and, even when Harrison was out for an excellent 66, Jibran Khan set off briskly, until the ball was adjudged to have pitched in line for his leg stump LBW. Also in his prime this season, with 846 league
runs, Khan’s dismissal was another key moment. It came down to 11 being needed off the last over to be bowled, by frugal Lewis Hatchett, with two new lower order batsmen at the crease. After a free hit no ball, five was required off the last delivery, which was clubbed away backward of square by Leigh Harrison with some spectators shouting that it had gone for six. An earlier four, which bounced well inside the boundary, had been given as a six but the umpire eventually signalled four, leaving the scores level. The competition rules clearly state that if the scores are tied at the completion of a match then the team that has lost fewer wickets is the winner, but further consultation and representations followed until the stumps were finally uprooted, with East Grinstead triumphant. This was a game of fine margins, with too many close calls for comfort, leaving Roffey dejected, but although their dream of winning four titles has evaporated, nothing is more certain that they will pick themselves up for one more chance of silverware at the National T20 Cup Finals Day at Derbyshire’s HQ this Sunday. There they will play Yorkshire side Hanging Heaton with the winner going on to meet either Nantwich from the Cheshire County League Premier Division or serial trophy winners Swardeston from just south of Norwich, captained by former Sussex player Joe Gatting.

Two good results then FA Cup disappointment for YMCA
Dean Brown Saturday September 1 - Southern Combination Football League: Premier Division – Shoreham 0 2 Horsham YMCA Tuesday September 4 – Peter Bentley Cup Round 2 – YMCA 4 1 Lancing Saturday September 8 – FA Cup Preliminary Round - YMCA 1 2 Tooting & Mitcham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Despite the best efforts of Alex Barbary. Luke Donaldson and Sam Schaaf the first half at Shoreham was goal-less, the Horsham defence keeping out rare forays from the hosts. But, when Tony Nwachukwu was brought on after the break he scored almost immediately – in the 65th minute. Then Dean Bown also made a telling impact – with a 25 yard strike just 6 minutes before extra time - when he was substituted for Sam Schaaf. Post match Peter Buckland singled out defender Dean Carden for keeping Shoreham’s strikers at bay and said: “After the first half I said it’s the type of game we could look

Tony Nwachukwu back on and regret if we don’t take the chances.” Against Lancing in the Peter
With 10 minutes to go and 1-1 in the FA Cup I’m very disappointed that we didn’t hold on Bentley Cup, YM pressed from the off, earning three successive corners, but both sides were either off target or firing straight at the keeper, until Sam Schaaf hit a strong shot just over the corner of the bar. Then, in the 38th minute, the same player saw his strike deflected, giving the visiting keeper no chance, and he might have had a second goal, but was unable to connect with Nwachukwu’s cross. Resuming one up, Sam Schaaf quickly broke through, the referee eventually awarding an own goal, doubling YM’s lead. Then, in the 76th
minute Ollie Gill scored a beautiful goal with a long range shot into the top left corner, swiftly followed by Schaaf putting the result beyond doubt with YM’s fourth. A harsh penalty was awarded against YM after keeper Aaron Jeal and a defender were floored in a one to one. Leon Dromis duly converted with the first goal conceded by YM for three games, but YM were comfortable 4-1 winners, Peter Buckland telling the District Post: “With one eye on Saturday’s FA Cup game we had seven starting changes and three during the game. We didn’t have a good first half, but we took them apart in the second!” The Tooting & Mitcham cup tie ended in frustration for YM after neither side had found the net in the first half, when both sides had unfulfilled chances and Aaron Jeal pulled off excellent reaction saves to deny the visitors. Ten minutes after the resumption Dean Bown waited his moment, making no mistake to give YM the lead. Jeal then averted a seemingly certain Tooting goal only for them to equalise from a subsequent corner. Ash Dugdale, Barbary and Carden all came close to scoring, but Tooting stole the game with a classic breakaway goal from a long solo Elijah Simpson run when YM were committed in defence. Peter Buckland was unable to hide his regret, saying: “With 10 minutes to go and 1-1 in the FA Cup I’m very disappointed that we didn’t hold on – they were fast on the break, but we gifted that last goal.” After Wednesday’s game v Lingfield at East Grinstead, YM travel to Crawley Down Gatwick on Saturday, both league encounters, before visiting Broadbridge Heath on Tuesday (18th) in the RUR Cup.
Heath hold high flying Pagham - new ground almost ready Tuesday September 11 Macron Store Southern Combination League – Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 0 0 Pagham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter A nil nil draw may not sound too enthralling, but there was plenty of endeavour from both sides and three red cards. Reduced to 10 men and with a stand in keeper for the second half, Broadbridge Heath did well to contain unbeaten Pagham. Both defences were busy, but each side’s forwards were either off target or shot straight at the keeper. A BBH corner went right across the face of the goal without anyone getting a touch, before Pagham’s Callum Overton missed a golden opportunity from a one on one. Then, just before half time Kieron Thorp came charging out and was sent off after crashing into an onrushing Pagham forward. New signing Richard Wetton took over in goal and was immediately in action as a Pagham free kick skimmed the bar. On the resumption,
Marlon Maxwell’s header just evaded the goal before Wetton was floored by Pagham’s previously booked Ryan Davidson, who was ordered off. Max Howell’s cross resulted in an unconverted BBH corner ahead of Devon Fender repeatedly worrying the Pagham back line, but Pagham were also creating chances in end to end exchanges. Just before the end Pagham were reduced to nine men when Jamie Howcastle was red carded and Fender sought to take advantage with a solo run, but neither side quite did enough to win and a point apiece was a fair outcome. Broadbridge Heath are next in action on Tuesday when they welcome Horsham YMCA to the Leisure Centre in the RUR Cup. Meanwhile, at Broadbridge Heath’s adjacent new ground the clubhouse is complete. Work on the perimeter fencing, floodlights, stands, dugouts, and turnstiles has commenced and other items are being attended to. If everything goes to plan, the Bears should be playing matches at their new home by mid November.
Horsham Men’s and Ladies’ teams eagerly await new season
Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter
After steadily working themselves up through the leagues – and winning their first game 5-0 last
season – the subsequent results of Horsham’s Mens’ 1st XI were very disappointing and they ended up relegated from the South Premiership Division 1 to Division 2. But, Team Manager Al Campbell says: “We’ve played a couple of challenging friendlies against testing opposition, putting six goals past Barnes, and our team for the upcoming season has a refreshed look with several different names in the line up. It’s not entirely a new squad because we welcome four alumni back from University, all having previously proved themselves at first team level. It would not be a Horsham team without at least one Chinn in the squad, and although we have just have lost budding star Joel, off to University, he is replaced by both of his siblings Zak and Noah, important players from Horsham’s promotion years - Zak will add punch to the front line whilst Noah brings stability to the back. Toby Fraser also comes back from further education: quick and fit he will drop into the midfield. The final ‘old boy’ returning is Jack Dean, with one of the finest goal scoring records in the league – his full-time availability is yet to be fully confirmed as he is on work placement.” Al continues: “New team captain Rob
Turnbull has also recruited over the summer. With last year’s coach and goalkeeper Andrew Isaacs departed to be player-coach at Lewes, we were concerned to find a new netminder but have secured a great replacement in tall and athletic Jack Egerton, who comes to us from East Grinstead. Ed Marsh also joins us - from Canterbury.” Despite a thorough search, Horsham are yet to find a new coach, but, although he will not be available on match days, former club stalwart Dom Male will be taking training, Rob Turnbull explaining: “So many potential coaches are still actively playing top level hockey, but we’ll keep on looking!” Al Campbell sums up with: “I know we’ll be competitive and that’s our objective this season. And, it’s great to finally get guys coming back from Uni rather than losing them. This looks to be the most complete squad we’ve fielded for many seasons and we have 18-20 young fit skilled and mature men competing for selection.’ Horsham’s men are in the Quarter Final of the Sussex Cup this Saturday – against Hastings-based South Saxons from Kent/Sussex Regional League 2 – at Christs Hospital, noon push back. The league season starts on the 29th with a home
game versus Tulse Hill & Dulwich. Horsham Ladies, promoted back to the Women’s Conference East also start their league programme on September 29th - with a trip to Sevenoaks. Meanwhile, Charlotte “CJ” While tells the District Post: “It’s a new challenge for us moving back up into the national league this season and the team has changed quite dramatically with a number of players heading off to university. Because of our elevation and facilities we’ve had lots of interest and plenty of new joiners. We’re still finalising our squad because we’ve had around 30 coming for training, all fighting for a first team spot, which is a nice headache to have. It’s great that our top three officials are all staying in post – Captain Hannah Simpson, Coach Chris Bowen and Team Manager Jane Denman and we’re delighted to announce our big new signing – Isabella de Rocha from South Africa. Bella has been playing for ‘Crusaders’ in Johannesburg for the last year and plays for the South African indoor side. We’re all really looking forward to welcoming her to the club and we’re raring to go with the new season!”
