Bridge Leisure Centre up and running ! martin read

Reporter

The brand new £12.3 million Bridge Leisure Centre at Broadbridge Heath – completed on time and on budget - was declared open last Friday, the doors being opened to the public on Saturday morning. On arrival members and visitors are greeted by a welcoming reception area and pleasantly laid out café. Guests at Friday’s opening ceremony were treated to a tour of the spacious new building, adjacent to the old Leisure Centre (which will be demolished to make way for a car park with around 190 spaces). Broadbridge Heath Football Club will soon be moving to their new ground, next to the Bridge Leisure Centre and the running track surrounding the present football pitch will close, the current plan being to transfer the athletics facility to Christ’s Hospital with apartments destined for the existing football and running area, further developments may also follow. On the tour the first port of call was the ‘Clip ‘n’ Climb’ area, giving the

opportunity for even inexperienced children and adults to take on - after a full safety briefing - the challenge of scaling the face of the colourful 7.5 metre high feature, incorporating the Twister, Astroball, Stairway to Heaven and the Leap of Faith. Guests were then shown the sports hall catering for six different sports – in addition to the five outdoor sports courts - the 70+ station state of the art gym with cardio equipment and plug in ipad ports, three upstairs studios, incorporating pilates, a silent area for yoga, ballet bars, substantial cycling provision and athletics training. There is also a Sensory Room, specially designed to encourage users to develop and enjoy their senses - if they wish, transforming the room from a calming and soothing place to an exciting and engaging interacting zone full of light and sound. And, the Centre houses a Beauty & Sports Therapy Injury Clinic, too. At the opening ceremony the mixed choir from Tanbridge House School proved very popular, Horsham MP Jeremy Quin telling the District Post: “This is an absolutely wonderful place, a superb facility for Horsham and our surrounding community and it is excellent to see the evening so well attended.” Councillor Jonathan Chowen, Cabinet Member for Leisure and

Culture then said: “This is the completion of one of the most significant Horsham District Council investments in years, designed to meet the needs of our

growing community.” The light and airy new Centre makes maximum use of the space available without the nooks and crannies of the former building, but compro-

HAODS and the Badminton Club could not be accommodated, although badminton is available in the sports hall. Places Leisure will run the Bridge Centre, as they do at HDC’s other facilities (Horsham’s Pavilions in the Park and the Centres at Billingshurst and Steyning), speaking without the benefit of a microphone, CEO Sandra Dodd saying: “It is our mission to create active places and healthy people with an array of activities and sporting opportunities to inspire all members of the local and wider community to take part and enjoy healthier lifestyles.” Peter Burgess, Chairman of HDC then cut the ribbon to declare the Bridge Centre officially open. Various names had been put forward for the new Centre, some favouring Alfred Shrubb, the local middle and long distance record breaker, winning over 1,000 top races, but after consideration the Centre was named to reflect the village where it is located. Saturday morning’s attendees

were also given a tour, and there was fulsome praise for “the superb array of machines giving vast workout potential.” Other feedback included: “A great improvement on the tired old Centre!” – “The body balance and step equipment is superb” and: “It’s great to see so many families enjoying themselves here.” The Bridge Leisure Centre is part of the continuous development of the area – flint tools employed thousands of years BC had been found, Horsham stone quarried nearby, and the site was formerly home to the Bomb Disposal Unit (two shells were uncovered during construction of The Bridge). The military huts were used by various local clubs prior to construction of the old Leisure Centre in the 1980s. Steve Tremmel is facing eviction from the specially converted horsebox in which he has been living on private land at Coolham Manor, near Billingshurst. 51 year old Steve works as a carer, providing support for vulnerable adults, and, being unable to fund the purchase of somewhere to live in the area, with the landowner’s permission he moved into the horsebox some five years ago after getting divorced. HDC issued an enforcement notice two years ago citing “unauthorised stationing of a vehicle for residential purposes”, since when Steve has been fighting the decision, with the Council saying that he has had sufficient time to comply. Councils contend that such occupation is contrary to local and national planning policies under the Town & Country Planning Act – designed to protect the character and appearance of the environment and there have been a number of somewhat similar cases across the UK, where prosecutions have been pursued in magistrates’ courts and injunctions obtained, councils wishing to be seen to uphold planning policies consistently in their areas. However, Steve feels that he has done his best to resolve the challenge of finding somewhere affordable to live, there being a widely acknowledged lack of such housing, especially in our district, and, while he does not expect to stay in the horsebox for the rest of his life, he wants to be allowed to remain where he is, living quietly and maintaining his home and surroundings without being a problem to anyone. There is an undisputed human rights issue at stake with various factors considered by the courts, for example whether

the contested accommodation is the only known residence of the occupier, and whether removal would result in homelessness, the test being whether eviction is proportionate and in the public interest to safeguard the environment, balanced against the occupier’s right to enjoy a private life and home. The housing crisis has resulted in people living in adapted shipping containers, buses, and private garages, and a converted horsebox recently sold for £12,500 – a snip considering that others are on the market for almost five times that price and there is even a website displaying the best horseboxes in which to live. Serious breaches of planning control are classified as a criminal offence, but Steve Tremmel’s plight has drawn considerable support, with local residents telling the District Post: “If Mr Tremmel is evicted he’ll need to be rehoused, taking away a muchneeded home from someone else,” and: “OK, the Council may be within their rights, but should they be wasting their time and our money on this – surely they’ve got more pressing matters to attend to?” Other comments included: “The law needs to be applied with compassion and common sense” and: “This man is performing a caring role in the community and is hurting nobody – and he’s not a drain on public resources, so in return he deserves to be treated accordingly,” and, pointedly: “Winter is approaching, no fun for the homeless, are the Council really going to play Scrooge with someone who’s a useful member of society, not a sponger?” There is talk of a petition being launched to promote Steve Tremmel’s cause, meanwhile it remains to be seen whether Horsham District Council will reconsider their stance.

Record crowds at Sunday’s Sussex Street Food Finals

Three Sussex Street Food vendors were announced as Grand Finalists in the Sussex Food & Drink Awards 2019 at the Street Food Finals held at the Carfax in Horsham last Sunday. Glorious Autumn sunshine attracted record crowds to come and enjoy delicious taster plates from the top ten Sussex Street Food finalists together with great live music and local produce stalls. Garlic Wood Events in Shipley, Mann & Moore in Horsham and The BBQ Project in St Leonards on Sea, Hastings were declared Grand Finalists and received high praise from award winning super chef, Matt Gillan who led the judging panel, alongside Ian Swainson,

Head Chef from The Pass at the South Lodge Hotel and Cllr Kate Rowbottom, Deputy Chairman of Horsham District Council, supported by the public votes on the day. Sponsors of the Street Food category, Horsham District Foodies supported by Food Rocks, organised the exciting market day, which saw current reigning Sussex Street Food champions Garlic Wood Events creatively marry their top quality meats with seasonal local ingredients to earn them another spot as Grand Finalists this year. New contestants Mann & Moore offered an array of excellent barbequed and smoked meats to join the top three alongside The BBQ Project, who also presented some incred-

ibly tasty slow barbequed dishes and some delicious fishcakes with cheese sauce. Matt Gillan said, “Today has been just great, a fantastic atmosphere with some incredibly talented Street Food vendors and the opportunity for everyone to sample a multitude of amazing dishes. I have been hugely impressed with the very high standard that has been presented to us today. Having been lucky enough to travel and experience some of the best street food in the world, including renowned places such as Austin, Texas, some of these superb dishes today were absolutely on that level. “I commend everyone who took part in this competition, but the three Grand Finalists really shone through with not just incredibly tasty food, but also their use of local ingredients, value for money, presentation and their whole ethos. I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of the judging process for the Street Food category in the Sussex Food and Drink Awards.” The three Grand Finalists will join 400 guests at a BAFTA-style ceremony on May 15 2019 at the Amex Stadium in Brighton, where the winners will be revealed and guests will enjoy a seven-course Sussex produce banquet, hosted by awards patron Sally Gunnell OBE and Danny Pike from BBC Sussex. Winners of the Townies and Parkies story writing competition announced

Two talented local children were announced as winners of a Horsham District Council story writing competition this week. Inspired by the BBC 500 Word children’s story competition, HDC launched its own children’s writing competition back in the summer, challenging local children to write a short story about The Townies and The Parkies adventures in Horsham Town Centre or Horsham Park. The winner of the 5-9 years category was Conor Winspear. The winner of the 10-13 years category was Nyah Hawkes. The stories were based on the Albion Way subway original murals illustrated by local artist Katie Wells. The delightful animal characters featured on the murals have already become known to

local children through a number of recent town and park trails. Three runners up for each age category were also announced; They were Daniel Bellenie, Louisa Sargent and Scarlett Edwards in the age 5 to 9 category, and Nathan Hughson, Katherine Taylor and Nathalie Griffin in the age 10 to 13 category. The winners will have their stories made into a small book to be illustrated by Katie Wells and sold this Christmas though partners, with profits going to local children’s charities - Chestnut Tree House, Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity and The Springboard Project. Each winner will also receive a framed original illustration from their story in the book. Winners and runners up will receive signed

copies of the book and Waterstones gift vouchers. The next instalment of the Townies and Parkies adventures starts this week (week commencing 22 October) when new murals are installed in the Albion Way subway. Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure Cllr Jonathan Chowen commented: “Many congratulations to the winners and runners up. The Townies and Parkies trails have been a real success over the summer, seeing hundreds of families enjoying both the town centre and the park and this is a perfect culmination to the summer activity programme. “It is really fitting that, as we approach the 2019 Horsham District Year of Culture, so many local children felt inspired to use their creativity to write some amazing stories. “We now look forward to the next phase of this project when we install fresh panels in the Albion Way underpass to reflect the winter. Do check them out if you are walking between the town and the park.” These activities promoting Horsham Town Centre and Horsham Park were organised by Horsham District Council with Horsham town’s branch of Waterstones, Maverick Publishing, and West Sussex Library Service. Other judging partners included local authors, Gobsmack Comics, My Fair Kind Child, Cocoa Loco and Katie Wells Illustration.

Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens launches Restaurant Interlude

Restaurant Interlude is a new restaurant destination at Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens - the historic 200 acre estate, with Grade I Listed gardens, near Horsham in West Sussex. The restaurant is open for dinner from Wednesday to Saturday weekly, with ten tables. Bookings are online at www.restaurantinterlude.co.uk. Owner, Penny Streeter OBE described the restaurant: “Interlude connects lovers of fine dining with the very spirit of Leonardslee, the finest woodland gardens in England, carefully curated for over 200 years. Every dish in each seasonal, multicourse tasting menu is designed to a hunter-gatherer farmer concept of food that’s foraged, cultivated and raised on the estate or close by. It is savoured and enjoyed as an intimate dining experience, a small, exclusive dinner party within the estate’s Italianate mansion house.” The hospitality entrepreneur, owner of vineyards in the UK and South Africa, bought the Leonardslee estate in 2017. She has opened the restaurant (October 19 2018) after 18 months’ intensive restoration of the gardens and Grade II Listed mansion house. The gardens will open in early 2019. Diners can feast on the multiple courses that include: estate rabbit, winter purslane, hogweed cider and charcoal; also fallow deer with local braai and sour raspberry; and oyster, foraged

greens and juniper. Penny Streeter brought Executive Chef Jean Delport from his native South Africa 8 months ago to plan and prepare for the launch - from recruiting his team, which includes Chef Ruan Pretorius, to designing new kitchens, creating original tasting menus and sourcing the fin-

Interlude connects lovers of fine dining with the very spirit of Leonardslee, the finest woodland gardens in England, est ingredients from the estate and selected local farmers. Jean has particular experience from South Africa of how to complement extraordinary tasting menus with fine wines. Guests at Interlude can enjoy a selection of wines from the owner’s vineyard at Benguela Cove, Hermanus in South Africa. In Sussex, Penny Streeter has planted 40 acres of vineyards at Leonardslee and at a second site, three miles away at Mannings Heath, where she has created the UK’s first golf and wine estate. Guests arriving at the mansion house, built in 1855, are greeted in the grand hallway with music

from a self-playing piano and drinks in the bar. They are then seated together at around 7pm in the restaurant, enjoying views across acres of gardens in the steep valley below, and east and south across to the South Downs. Penny Streeter OBE is the owner of the Benguela Collection vineyards and hospitality group. It includes the 400 acre Mannings Heath Golf and Wine Estate, located three miles from Leonardslee, and Benguela Cove vineyard in South Africa, as well as four restaurants and a hotel on the Garden Route. Executive Chef Jean Delport has worked with owner Penny Streeter at her restaurant in Somerset West, Cape Town for several years. Jean trained and won awards at the prestigious Zevenwacht Chef School in South Africa. With a background in classical French and English cooking, including several seasons in Ireland, he is noted as an innovator, changing and improving upon his own menus and selection of ingredients regularly. Chef Ruan Pretorius began his career, and was finally head chef at restaurant Terroir in the Cape winelands in South Africa. Terroir is one of South Africa’s most decorated restaurants, in the top 20 of the country for 19 years running. He decided to join Jean Delport in the UK to meet an exciting new challenge at Restaurant Interlude.

West Sussex Music Launches Key2Music beginner classes

Parents in West Sussex who are looking for affordable, innovative and high quality music tuition should know that West Sussex Music has announced a brand new initiative which will offer children the opportunity to learn a new instrument, alongside friends and peers, in a fun, group environment. To be held on Saturday mornings at Music Centres across the district, the Key2Music beginner classes add another string to West Sussex Music’s bow, reaffirming its position as the largest provider of music lessons in the county. The Key2Music beginner classes, which will run at West Sussex Music’s five Music Centres in Chichester, Crawley, Haywards Heath, Horsham, and Worthing, will give children the chance to learn instruments such as bassoon, brass, cello, clarinet, double bass, flute, oboe, saxophone, viola, and violin, for as little as £60 per term, which includes Music Centre membership; Low cost instrument hire can be added for just £20 per term. Adam Barker, West Sussex Music’s Assistant Head, explained: “At West SussexMusic, we know that learning to play an instrument boosts attainment, promotes wellbeing and enhances self-esteem. “And we know, from our ensembles, that children improve faster, and achieve far more, if they regularly practise as a group. These Key2Music beginner classes will provide a safe, social and creative outlet for musical self-expression, and all in a very affordable way.” James Underwood, Chief

Executive, West Sussex Music, added: “Although we work hard to promote all genres of music, it is central to our mission to safeguard the tradition of orchestral music learning, and this is why we feel it is particularly important to launch Key2Music beginner classes, which make learning a classical instrument in a music centre, accessible to all children.” The Key2Music beginner classes will be an exciting addition to a programme that already has much to offer children in West Sussex. Every week during term time, at Music Centres throughout the county, children can enjoy a whole range of musical activities including bands, choirs, orchestras as well as lessons and aural and theory classes. Key to West Sussex Music’s unique offer, its ensembles not only bring children together through a shared love of music but also offer a clear progression route through the Music Centres, on to the West Sussex Youth Orchestras and Choirs and beyond that to Junior Conservatoires and national ensembles. So, whatever the choice of instrument, level of competence or age, there is a suitable ensemble or band to be found; whether it’s a percussion ensemble, string orchestra, wind band, choir or guitar group. There are also classes in theory and musicianship as well as groups for pre-school children. To register your interest in the Key2Music beginner classes email music@westsussexmusic.co.uk.

Gatwick’s Five Year Master Plan

Gatwick Airport has launched its Five Year Master Plan, which includes a proposal to convert the existing Emergency Runway into a fully active second runway. Gatwick Area Conservation Campaign Chairman, Peter Barclay, said: “We strongly oppose any second runway at Gatwick and it will fight this proposal tooth and nail.” The Emergency Runway is located parallel to and approximately 190m north of the Main Runway. Planning permission for it was granted solely on the basis

that under no circumstances could the Emergency Runway be used in conjunction with the Main Runway. The Civil Aviation Authority approval also only permits the use of one or the other runways, thus the Emergency Runway may currently only be used when the Main Runway is out of action due to an incident or during maintenance. Peter continued: “The proposal, which may bring in excess of 80,000 additional flights a year, will simply increase the problems already being experienced by local communities - noise, air pollution and excessive road traffic. It would also put even greater pressure on the tottering road and rail infrastructure both locally and further afield. “The legal agreement prohibiting a second runway at Gatwick expires in August 2019 and it would appear the airport is attempting to get a second runway via the back door as it were. Any proposal to bring the Emergency Runway into operation will need

approval from the CAA and other safety bodies, as well as needing planning permission for Change of Use.” Objectors argue that the use of the Emergency Runway, in conjunction with the Main Runway, will substantially increase the noise and health impacts on residents living to the north of the airport. Additionally, the increase in the number of flights would have considerable noise impacts on those beneath the now concentrated departure and arrivals flight paths to both the east and west of the airport. Peter concluded: “People will feel angry and deceived following parliament’s overwhelming decision in June to confirm the government’s earlier choice of Heathrow for the site of additional runway capacity in the south-east. “We will study the proposals with care, and advise our members how best to respond to the Master Plan during the twelve week consultation period.”

Local Pupil Seeks Lego Bricks for Ambitious Project

A Year 10 pupil from Christ’s Hospital School, near Horsham, is attempting to build a large model of his school out of Lego bricks. Levi, who is aged 14 and from Hailsham in East Sussex, has already created the school crest (pictured), as well as Lego figures dressed in

the distinctive Christ’s Hospital School uniform. In order to finish building the school model, Levi estimates that he will need approximately 60,000 bricks, which he does not yet have. Levi, who has been interested in Lego and making things all his life, has been asking for Lego for every birthday and Christmas since he can remember. Unsurprisingly, his favourite subject at school is Design & Technology, and he aspires to becoming a Rocket Engineer when he grows up. Levi uses Lego’s official online designer to design his projects and a website called BrickLink to pick up second-hand Lego bricks. However, as the bricks he still needs in order to complete his project would cost at least £500, he is hoping to find people who will donate their unwanted Lego to him: “I am going to need a lot of green, red and white bricks (because of the large lawned areas, statues and red brick buildings at Christ’s Hospital), but it can be any kind of Lego – I will use it somehow!” Levi sold forty of his Lego figures in under forty minutes at his school’s Christmas fete last year, in aid of charity, and had lots of requests for more. He explained: “They are really fiddly to make; I couldn’t have done it without my mum’s help!” In the past, he has also created a rotating Lego model of the Earth, Sun and Moon, complete with gearing inside. He also enjoys making animations of his Lego creations, including a Christ’s Hospital Lego drummer. If you would like to help Levi finish his Lego creation, please send any unwanted Lego bricks to: Lego 4 Levi, Marketing Office, Christ’s Hospital, Horsham, West Sussex, RH13 0LJ.

HAOS Contemporary Art Fair draws the crowds

Kevin Meeten with District Post’s Davey Pearson

A record crowd of Horsham Culture Vultures visited the twoday Horsham Contemporary Art Fair, opened by District Post Managing Director Davey Pearson, at Parkside last weekend. In total an estimated 2,300 people attending to view the work of 42 top local artists. The artworks on show ranged from painting, though sculpture and ceramics, woodcraft and upcycled objects, to jewellery and stitch craft. This was the second year the exhibition had run at Parkside and the clement weather attracted a mixed crowd of connoisseurs and novice art fans alike. The artists

on show particularly remarked on the high levels of appreciation and detailed conversations they were engaged in and the high number of visitors who were returning after visiting the previous year. Similarly, visitors were impressed with the high standard and diversity of work on show. Art Fairs are always a great place for collectors to buy work and non-collectors to start a collection and the Horsham Artist Open Studio (HAOS) group which organises the event make sure there is something to suit everybody’s pocket and everybody’s wall space. All around the fair artists did good business, abstract painter

Fleur Cowgill commenting that ‘it’s always good when somebody comes and sees a piece on the first day, then returns on the Sunday to buy it because they can’t get it out of their minds – that’s when you really know you’ve made a connection.’ Pop artist Kevin Meeten, who led the organising team for this year’s fair, was delighted by the turn out. ‘All artists create because they love to create – but it’s just wonderful to get an appreciative audience of this size and sophistication to share the work with.’ If you missed out put the third weekend of October in your diary for 2019

Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 calendar on sale now

A full colour photographic calendar (featuring 12 “hidden gems” from across the Horsham District) has been developed to celebrate the forthcoming Horsham District Year of Culture in 2019, and is on sale at local outlets now. Organisers of the Year of Culture celebrations Horsham District Council have always been keen to get as many people as possible involved in the yearlong celebrations, so at the outset of the preparations they

asked members of the public to vote on their favourite ‘hidden gems’ of the District, resulting in 12 places that will be celebrated during 2019 and featured in the calendar. The 12 hidden gems are – the Blue Idol Quaker Meeting House in Coolham, Coldwaltham Yew tree, Cobblestone Walk in Steyning, Chesworth Farm, Kithurst Hill, Knepp Castle, Motte and Bailey in North Horsham, Warnham Local Nature Reserve, Woods Mill in Henfield, Pul-

borough Brooks, South Downs Link and Sumners Pond in Barns Green. Each gem is depicted in full colour photography throughout the calendar. Money off coupons are also available at the back of the calendar, offering over £20 of discounts off products and services from tea rooms, cafes, and beer stockists across the District. A calendar of the gems is on sale now (RRP £4.99) and every calendar purchased raises £1 for local vulnerable people of Horsham District. Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure Cllr Jonathan Chowen said: “Creating a 2019 Calendar of Hidden Gems is a great way to kick start our Year of Culture celebrations and it was good to get so many members of our local community involved in voting for their favourite hidden gems in the Horsham District. “The calendar also highlights many of the amazing events and activities which will be going on throughout the year of celebration. “I would urge as many of you as possible to buy a copy, discover the District’s hidden gems and help to raise money for local vulnerable people.”

District Council Chairman Cllr Peter Burgess said: “We have been lucky to have had such a great community leader who has enhanced Horsham generally and the Church in particular, whilst remaining a really nice and approachable guy. “We wish him, and his wife Jebs the very best for their future in Bath where he will serve as the Rector of Bath Abbey. Horsham will miss them.”

Sure Aesthetics win title of Best Aesthetics Business in the South East 2018

Sure Aesthetics was delighted to be awarded the title of Best Aesthetics Business in the South East at the TMP regional awards ceremony held at the HG Wells conference centre in Woking. Established in 2014 and located on the outskirts of Horsham, Sure

Aesthetics specialise in Laser, antiageing treatments and permanent make-up and were honoured to discover that a client had nominated them for the award. Excited to have won, Sarah Horwood owner and laser treatment specialist at Sure Aesthetics

commented “I felt really thrilled to have been nominated by a client, but to have then won the award is amazing. 80% of my clients come from recommendations, with many traveling long distances for their anti-ageing, micro needling, tailor made peels, or laser hair removal so as to be confident of the results and to be seen by me personally. My goal has always been to offer high end medical grade and clinically tested treatments that give real results, but I had not fully appreciated the huge, life changing impact this would have on so many of my clients. For me, this award endorses and recognises the passion, integrity and ethics that I have embedded in to all that Sure Aesthetics does, and for that I am so very proud.” Competition was strong with clinics from all over the South East entering in the hope of winning this converted award. For Sarah, this was made all the more special as in addition to the assessment by the judging panel, the volume of client’s votes were also taken into consideration before a winner was announced. Sure Aesthetics is now also shortlisted for the red carpet National Awards which take place in December.

The restaurant has frontage to both West Walk and Blackhorse Way and has seating for around 75 covers over the ground and first floors. Andrew Algar, head of commercial property at Henry Adams Commercial in Horsham, said, “This is a well presented restaurant currently operating as a Chinese restaurant and takeaway, and the current operator is now looking to move abroad. We understand this location has been used as a restaurant since 2006 so this now represents an opportunity for a new restaurateur to take over the lease and the benefit of the trade fixtures, fittings and catering equipment which is all in place so a new

Coming to The Capitol The most glamorous re-union in Broadway history

Photos by Chris Dale and Sam Taylor

New York 1971. Famous Theatre Director Dimitri Weismann invites you to the hottest party in town. The venue: his once great Weismann Theatre. In the morning it will be gone forever - so join the fabulous Follies girls as they get together for one last time to have a few drinks, sing a few songs, tell a few tales and, of course, reunite with lost loves. Meet movie actress Carlotta Campion, Broadway baby Hattie Walker, hoofer Stella Deems, dancers Emily and Teddy Whitman, Opera Star Heidi Schiller and Parisian femme fatale Solange LaFitte…all shadowed by the ghosts of their younger selves. Amidst these colourful characters are Phyllis Stone and Sally Plummer with their husbands Ben and Buddy - who once waited at the stage door for their ‘girls upstairs’. This group of former best friends are all of a sudden faced with the reality of their choices as the ghosts of

their past bring back the memory of a decades old love triangle. In an atmosphere of bittersweet nostalgia the four face up to what they could have had and what they have become. HAODS have relished the opportunity to stage one of Sondheim’s most beautiful shows. Director Yvonne Chadwell says “from a performers point of view there are a number of challenges; the ‘ghosts’ having to watch and mirror their former selves, the 4 main characters experiencing emotional turmoil and the back stage and costume than coming up with a set and a range of costumes to suit the various parts of the show including the Vaudeville section in Act 2.” Follies recently enjoyed a highly successful run at The National Theatre winning an Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival. The show covers a huge range of musical styles from heartstopping ballads such as ‘Losing my Mind’ and ‘One Last Kiss’ to the glitzy ‘Broadway Baby’ and

‘Mirror Mirror’ to the comedy of ‘Buddy’s Blues’ which brings back the days of Vaudeville. HAODS’ version promises something for everyone, with fishnets, feathers, fans, and dance routines to match the wonderful music played by a full live orchestra. ‘Follies’ opens at The Capitol, Horsham from Tuesday 6 until Saturday 10 November, with performances Tuesday – Friday evenings at 7:30pm, a Saturday matinee at 2:00pm and Saturday evening at 7:00pm. This is a reunion like no other and certainly one not to be missed. Book your tickets today from The Capitol box office by going to www.thecapitolhorsham.com<http://www.thecapitolhorsham.com/> or call 01403 750 220. Pulborough fourth after Kent win Saturday September 20 – London 3 South East Park House 12 28 Pulborough Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter After the previous Saturday’s break, Pulborough returned to league action, coming away from their visit to Park House’s Bromley ground with their second win of the month. Boro led 10-7 at the break courtesy of tries from Captain Frazer Oliphant-Hope and Oscar Gravell. Two quick tries early in the second half from Sam Beasely and Luke Kilford set up the win, Oliphant-Hope telling

the District Post: “We got off to a brilliant start, playing the way we know we can. Harry Bullock and Lewis Morton were outstanding and it is pleasing that we are relatively injury free at the moment. On Saturday we’ve got a home match against Hastings & Bexhill and we’re expecting players back, so we should be stronger.” Ninth-placed Hastings had a narrow loss to Vigo last week. Pulborough are fourth with 21 points, Crowborough topping the table with 27 points ahead of Old Dunstonians (23) and Beccehamians (22). Folkestone and Hellingly occupy the last two berths.

Horsham carpeted by Staines Saturday October 20 – South League – Premier – Division 2 Staines 7 1 Horsham Men’s 1st XI Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Team Manager Al Campbell told the District Post: “Let’s be honest this was a train smash and all we can do is to put it behind us and take what we’ve we learned into the next game (at Broadbridge Heath on Saturday, 1.30 push back against eighth-placed West Hampstead). Six of the Staines seven goals were from open play, so we need to re-examine our defensive tactics as a matter of urgency.” The galling thing is that Horsham had started well, scoring the opening goal – Tim Upchurch converting a short corner with a powerful drag flick after Joey Humphreys had been fouled in the D. But, then, Al Campbell continued : “The wheels started to fall off, Staines levelling when an attacker got behind our defence to tap in a close range

loose ball”. After that Staines widened the Horsham defence again, giving themselves space for an easy conversion, with Horsham keeper Tom Surridge fatally exposed. And, after the hosts had increaded their lead, Freddie Campbell suffered a blatant stick tackle, leading to Staines fourth goal, leaving Horsham trailing 4-1 at the break. And, Horsham were not getting the rub of the green, further epitomised when Zak Chinn’s head took a blow from the Staines keeper’s clearance and, instead of the anticipated short corner, a hit was awarded to the home team, Chinn playing on with a golf ball-sized egg on his head. Despite being under the cosh, Horsham pressed hard in the second half, but the Staines keeper was having an outstanding game and, with Horsham committed to attack, three more Staines goals were shipped in. Horsham are now fifth and Staines third, both sides having two wins from four games. Guildford are top, ahead of Eastbourne and Slough – still awaiting their first point - are bottom, just below Woking.

Declan Nwachukwu

Saturday October 20 – London 2 South East Heathfield & Waldron 5 63 Horsham Rugby

Horsham provided what Head Coach Nick Stocker described as: “An excellent display of discipline, set piece execution and quality attacking structure” to inflict a heavy defeat over East Sussex rivals Heathfield and Waldron. Horsham got on the scoreboard in the fourth minute when former skipper Tom Johnson kicked a penalty. Johnson then scored a self-converted try before a wayward Heathfield kick enabled Horsham’s Aaron Linfield to cross the line, followed by tries from Joe Wilde and Declan Nwachukwu. Another from Wilde and a try from Tom Blewitt giving the Green & Whites a handsome, unchallenged, lead at the break. Horsham continued in similar vein in the second half with tries from Blewitt and, in the form of his life, Michael Tredgett driving over with great physicality after excellent Horsham scrum work. Lindfield added a further try before Heathfield’s spirited persistence eventually paid off with an unfulfilled try in the corner, but Horsham were dominating, Nwachukwu adding to the hosts woes, his team running out comprehensive winners

Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Life can be hard in the National League but, despite the scoreline, Horsham played well at Maida Vale’s Paddington Recreation Ground last Sunday, holding their Hampstead & Westminster hosts to 1-0 at half time, Ladies Captain CJ White telling the District Post: “Their Coach said we were incredibly difficult to get past and saw us as a threat. After the break they were fitter, but the score didn’t really reflect the game.” Horsham’s Elle Blakesly added: “It was a tough game and Hampstead had some great individual players,

playing good, quick hockey. We also played some great hockey and overall we were pleased with our performance. Our Team Captain, Hannah Jackson was exceptional in goal and as a team we have, without doubt, made good progress since the first game of the season after our reentrance back into the National League. On Saturday we play Wimbledon (at Broadbridge Heath, 15.30 start) – that’ll be another challenging game, but we’ll be giving it our all again!” Fifth-placed Wimbledon are the highest scorers in the Women’s Conference East League to date. After four games Horsham are 7th, with their most recent opponents – Hampstead & Westminster - top, one point ahead of both Cambridge City and Harleston Magpies.

with Nick Stocker saying: “Our front row performance was great, and the replacements that came on all maintained the quality of possession for our backs to use. With centres Tom Johnson and Joe Wilde causing havoc and Johnny Ordidge and Declan Nwachukwu stretching the defence at every opportunity, along with Chris Double offering great control, we looked dangerous throughout. Particular comments should go to Tom Blewitt who controlled the game admirably and with his younger half back partner Aaron Linfield, asked questions all afternoon. In a tough call, Aaron was awarded man of the man for his live wire performance on the back of a great platform set by the forwards. Today he was truly excellent scoring two well taken tries.” To date 11th placed Heathfield have conceded 243 points, the highest total in the league and their assessment was: “We were overrun by a Horsham’s clinically efficient performance and they looked a different class from Heathfield on the day.” Horsham are now fourth, Beckenham heading the table from Dover and Old Colfeians. Horsham are back at home on Saturday, welcoming Deal & Betteshanger (8th).

Cottesmore’s charity quiz – a great social opportunity!

Golf Martin Read - Sports Reporter Cottesmore Golf Club’s Ladies’ Captain Heather Skinner is rounding off her term of office with a charity quiz at the club on Friday November 2nd, starting at 7.30pm, Heather saying: “Come along and meet the nice people at Cottesmore, we’ll have teams of four competing in friendly rivalry for an exceptionally worthy cause and there’ll be modestly priced scrumptious food available, too!” Heather set herself a target to raise £5,000 for Heads On, continuing: “Quite rightly there is now a focus on mental health provision – one in four of us experience it at some point in our lives and most of us know a sufferer. So, to mark this year’s 70th anniversary of the NHS, I decided to see what we can do at the club to support Heads On. They’re local, with excellent facilities at

Langley Green, which they’re keen to develop further. They work in partnership with the NHS to make things better for those in need of help by introducing a range of projects, including provision of a gym to boost mental health, and other ways to assist patients and families – from across Sussex and beyond. We’ve had well-attended, golf days for lady players from various clubs in Sussex and Surrey with raffles, refreshments, donations and artisan stalls, with a real Cottesmore welcome. And, with other events we’ve managed to make a real dent in our target with the funds raised for this very worthwhile charity and I give heartfelt thanks to all those who’ve helped me organise and run the various events – the ladies have been brilliant, so supportive. And, now I’m having one last push for Heads On!” Heather started her programme with a coffee morning, and other

activities have included a sponsored walk from Putney to Hampton Court, Ruth Leatherbarrow and Catherine Malins contributing a wonderful £730 to the cause, Heather adding: “Cottesmore is such a lovely venue and the weather has been fantastic. Of course, it has been a challenge because of the fire, but General Manager Johnny Porter and his excellent team have been marvellous and our temporary facilities, including a fully functioning kitchen, changing rooms and showers have enabled us to keep going almost as if nothing had happened. In fact our membership has increased and the ladies have had a very successful season – Christine Knight and Linda Atkins got through to the Coronation Fours at St Andrews, the Ladies’ Pair’s Team were in the Onyx Finals in Buckinghamshire and some of our other teams were in the shakedown for silverware, too!” Heather summed up saying: “Cottesmore is still very much up and running and the Gatwick Bar and hotel rooms should be on song before too much longer, with health and fitness carrying on ahead of the full re-opening when Cottesmore will be even better than ever. Meanwhile, I look forward to seeing familiar faces and making new friends at the quiz on November 2nd !” Cottesmore Golf & Country Club, Buchan Hill, Pease Pottage, RH11 9AT 01293 528256 – www.cottesmoregolf.co.uk – www.headsoncharity.org

The Hornets sting the Wasps

Photo by John Lines Saturday October 20 – The Bostik League – South East Division Horsham 3 1 East Grinstead Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter After their recent cup games Horsham returned to league competition with a relatively comfortable win over Sussex opponents East Grinstead – the Wasps. The Hornets’ positive start paid dividends in the fourth minute when Jack Brivio’s cross found the goal via Grinstead’s Ryan Johnson, but the advantage was shortlived – a free kick was conceded, which Dean Gunner drove home to restore parity. Chances at both ends followed, until Horsham re-took the lead with the third

goal in the opening 12 minutes of the game when Tyrell RichardsonBrown broke free to pass to Will Hoare, who made no mistake. Richardson-Brown then supplied Rob O’Toole before Charlie Harris and Joey Taylor were also unsuccessful. Grinstead, too, had opportunities through Adodje Yao and Nico Cotton, but Horsham’s defence negated their strong shots, the score remaining 2-1 in Horsham’s favour at the break. Yao was back in action early in the second half, but he was denied by Horsham keeper Josh Pelling, who then gathered an attempt from Karn Miller-Neave. Horsham substituted Chris Smith and George Hayward for Richardson-Brown and Brivio, and after a Joe Shelley header was diverted, Pelling

kept out a threat at the other end. Smith, though, was causing problems for Grinstead, and after being thwarted, he continued to press, and with under 10 minutes left he put the result beyond doubt with a beautifully executed chip over Ceesay in the Grinstead goal. Smith then set off on a solo run, but hit the post just before the final whistle. On Saturday Horsham revert to cup action with an FA Trophy First Qualifying Round tie at Lancing against old foe Corinthian Casuals. Horsham’s recent trip for their scheduled Bostik League South East Division match against Thamesmead Town was cancelled after Thamesmead announced that they had gone into Creditors’ Voluntary Administration, saying: “It is with great sadness that due to a continued lack of supporters bringing finances into the club, Chairman Paul Bowden-Brown had no option but to look to sell the club. The player’s wages, management fees, ground fees and all other costs were being paid by the Chairman personally and despite heavy investment to try and turn the clubs fortunes around, the situation had not improved, and no buyer had been found. It is deeply regrettable that a fine club like Thamesmead Town has become the victim of the increasingly difficult financial situation clubs in grass root football leagues find themselves.” Horsham were due to host Thamesmead Town in the reverse league fixture in their final game of the season on Saturday April 27.

YMCA thrilled with big home against Eastbourne Town

Photo by Tim Hewlett Saturday October 20 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Horsham YMCA 5 1 Eastbourne Town Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter YMCA began positively, had a strong lead at half time and, after a minor second half wobble, romped home with a big win against one of the league’s better sides. After Dean Bown and Tony Nwachukwu had put Eastbourne under pressure, Dean Carden crossed from the right for Nwachukwu to head home in the 13th minute,

Sport

celebrating with joyous backward somersaults. A pile-driver from YM Captain Ash Dugdale then crashed into the side netting until, following an Eastbourne corner, Nwachukwu hit the deck, Bown converting the penalty with Eastbourne reduced to 10 men amid vehement protests that the YM striker was already on his way down when the defender made contact. Tom Gilbert and Carden created further opportunities until, with the game getting physical, Bown slotted home another penalty. Eastbourne then headed just wide and nobody was there to take advantage of their subsequent cross, but YM enjoyed a 3-0 cushion at the break.

An early YM second half corner came to nothing, before an Eastbourne shot was cleared off the line and the rebound crashed in during a defensive nightmare best forgotten. Suddenly it was all Eastbourne as they skimmed the bar and fired wide, but YM responded with two Nwachukwu attacks interspersed with a corner before, in end to end action Eastbourne headed over. Then, with 12 minutes of normal time left, YM broke through on the left, Nwachukwu putting the result beyond doubt. Eastbourne, though, kept competing, earning a corner but YM were pressing, too, with a Nwachukwu shot finishing in the side netting, until Alex Barbary headed in YM’s fifth goal from Tony Garrod’s cross. There was still time for a final Eastbourne push, but YM keeper Aaron Jeal’s feet kept them at bay. In two tough games last season YM did the double over Eastbourne Town, this time it was a clearer result, YM Manager Peter Buckland telling the District Post: “I wanted to make sure that we weren’t complacent in the second half, so in the interval I told the team to regard the score as nil nil and when Eastbourne pulled a goal back they were revitalised and might have scored again - 3-2 would have put a different complexion on the game. But, Tony Garrod coming on made a big difference!” This Saturday YM – currently second behind Chichester City - travel for a demanding game against fourth- placed Pagham.

Heath grab points with last goal Saturday October 20 Southern Combination Football League Premier Division Peacehaven & Telscombe 1 2 Broadbridge Heath Football Andy Crisp & Martin Read - Sports Reporter Despite having three players suspended Broadbridge Heath returned to winning ways with a narrow victory at Peacehaven on Saturday thanks to a late goal by debutant Ryan Brackpool. Rampant from the kick off, Heath’s Ollie Moore was denied by Peacehaven keeper Alieu Secka. The ball rebounded back to Moore whose second attempt was again blocked by Secka, for a corner taken by Tom Bold, Marlon Maxwell rising high to head into the top right hand corner for his first league goal of the season. Straight from the restart Lee Carney picked out Richard Wetton on the edge of the penalty area, the midfielder drilling a low shot straight at the Peacehaven keeper. Peacehaven recovered, and on 16 minutes former Heath player Jake LeGrange played a ball to Reilly Grant, who struck it well, but direct to Bears’ keeper Kieron Thorp. A minute later Thorp was in action again to deny both Callum Bradley and Bradley Bant. Midway through the half Heath’s Devon Fender won the ball but Secka rushed off

his line, negating the opportunity. Then, just before the break Peacehaven’s Jake Brocklebank struck a beauty from the edge of the box which beat Thorp, crashing against the bar and out to safety, before, in the final seconds, Peacehaven were refused a penalty for diving, the ref awarding Heath a free kick and a caution for the Peacehaven man. The first half ended with Heath leading by the only goal. Peacehaven resumed well, with Matthew Cheeseman going close, but despite having the majority of play with some lovely possession football, the final ball rarely troubled Thorp. Yet, it was the Bears who had the best chance to increase their lead when Fender drove a shot towards goal, Secka gathering at the near post. With 6 minutes remaining Maxwell pulled up with cramp and while he was being treated, the hosts took advantage of the extra man, playing a free kick into the Heath area, the ball pinged around before Curtis Ford scored from 8 yards - Heath players were convinced that he was offside, protests leading to cautions for Thorp and Carney, but the goal stood. In the final minutes Heath had a corner which a defender tried to head clear, but it skimmed straight to the far post where Brackpool rose above the pack to power a header into the roof of the net for the winning goal. Now 7th, Heath play AFC Uckfield Town (12th) at the Leisure Centre on Saturday.

YM fight back to continue in the Peter Bentley Cup Tuesday October 16 – Peter Bentley League Challenge Cup – Round 3 Arundel 1 2 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter YMCA came into this game with lingering concerns about their disappointing FA Vase exit against Kensington Borough and perhaps haunting memories of their dismal 3-1 league defeat at Arundel’s Mill Road ground in September 2017. In terms of possession and attacks, especially in the first half, YM were by far the more dominant side in the Peter Bentley Cup clash, but, despite their relatively low position in the league – 12 places below YM at the time of the tie – Arundel played with spirit, proving a hard nut to crack. The game started with a flurry of YM attacks, with Tony Nwachukwu constantly pressing and Jack Hartley having a lively debut following his recent signing from Horsham. YM were doing everything except score, but Aaron Jeal in the YM goal had to rush out to negate a rare Arundel attack before action resumed at the other end, where a back heel from Nwachukwu culminated in Dean Bown heading just over. Arundel then unleashed a fierce curler that hit the upright from an unmarked position, a lucky escape for YM. A YM corner followed with Nwachukwu prostrate behind the line after taking a hard blow on the leg. Alex Barbary then blazed over ahead of YM’s second corner, but the first half ended goal-less when the score might have been 4-0 in YM’s favour had chances been converted with less hesitancy in

front of goal – or 1-0 to Arundel if their golden opportunity had been inches to the left. Early in the second half Nwachukwu limped off and Sam Schaaf came on, his immediate attempt whistling past the post into the side netting. Two Arundel free kicks followed before a break through on the left enabled them to crash in a goal in a one on one foray in the 61st minute. Alarm bells rang, but YM kept pushing and their corner was blocked and cleared before Bown was crunched without sanction, but a goal was in the offing, Schaaf duly obliging into the top left corner. With the scores now level, YM kept up the pressure and, within two minutes, went in front, Bown confirming from close range that he knows where the goal is. Arundel then fired wide ahead of Ash Dugdale’s cross being pushed off by Dan Stevens in the Arundel goal, who made a full length save from a Schaaf and Bown combo from the resulting corner. Arundel, though, were not giving up and Jeal had to be at his best to keep them at bay before a shot across his goal went harmlessly wide and the hosts blazed over in the jittery final stages, YM holding out to clinch a win in the competition in which they were finalists last season. YM First Team Coach Ben Godfrey told the District Post: “We had to work hard and show character to come back from behind against an Arundel side that performed far better than their position indicates. We picked up injuries tonight with an impact knock for Tony Nwachukwu and a problem for Ollie Gill.” In the next round YM travel to Lingfield on Tuesday November 13. Lingfield are currently 10th in the League, in which YM beat them 3-2 in September.
