Côte Brasserie re-opens Côte were delighted to re-open in the heart of Horsham on Tuesday. The restaurant, housed in a grade II listed building, has been lovingly restored after it was devastated by a fire last year. There have been some new features added, including a first-floor balcony overlooking the entrance atrium, and cosy booth seating. In the lead up to Tuesday, General Manager of Côte Brasserie Horsham, Pedro Martins, was particularly excited by the opportunity, having lived and worked for seven years in the district: “I have been eagerly anticipating our reopening. Horsham’s community spirit is like no other and we have been overwhelmed by the goodwill of our regular guests. The team and I look forward to welcoming everyone with the warm hospitality we pride ourselves on at Côte.” On the menu, guests will find all their classic brasserie favourites, prepared by the chefs in the kitchen, such as Steak Frites, Tuna Niçoise and chargrilled corn-fed Breton Chicken. With a tempting selection of desserts on offer, including Côte’s must try Crème Caramel, a much-loved house speciality. Côte’s commitment to sourcing high quality ingredients can

be seen in the seasonal dishes featured in the monthly specials and weekday set menus, ensuring there is always something new to delight both regular and firsttime guests. During the week you can enjoy two courses for £11.50 and £13.50 for three, ideal for a quick lunch or relaxed early evening meal until 7pm. In the evening Monday to Thursday you can also dine from the Prestige Set Menu, offering seasonal and signature Côte classics with two courses for £15.95 and £18.95 for three. Popular dishes include Mousse de Canard, smooth duck liver pâté served with toasted brioche and Grilled Atlantic Salmon served with French ratatouille and drizzled with a lemon and olive oil dressing. The same care and attention to detail applies to Côte’s breakfast menus with the restaurant now open from 8am during the weekend as well to cater for the early risers. You will find that everything from the artisanal French jams on the tables to the Guérande sea-salted butter served with the freshly baked croissants has been carefully considered. Free tennis Friday winners announced Horsham District Council launched its first family annual membership scheme for its Horsham Park tennis courts earlier this summer with a Free Tennis Friday promotion on Friday 27 July. As part of the promotion, participants who signed up for the membership scheme were entered into a prize draw to win some top tennis prizes. First place winner was Helen Surley from Horsham who won a Wilson Roger Federer racket and the runner up was Mary Spreadbury from Warnham who won a family tennis pack of rackets and balls. The annual membership scheme represents extremely good value for money at just £45 a year per family and the initial sign up numbers have been extremely positive.

In order to sign up for annual membership , please go to horshamparktennis.com/Membership/Join . The Horsham Park courts underwent a successful makeover last year. Improvements include new fencing, new surfaces, re-marking and a new gate and booking system, ensuring that players can guarantee use of a court at their chosen time. The introduction of floodlighting allows players to maximise bookings throughout the year, with play continuing into the evening. All four courts can be used specifically for tennis over the summer months, however in the autumn and winter months, one court can be used for multi sports. For more information about the courts and to book a court please go to: www.horshamparktennis. com

GCSE success across West Sussex despite tougher exams West Sussex school children achieved some fabulous GCSE results on Thursday (23 August), early figures show, despite sitting harder new exams. The vast majority of courses this year have been toughened up, with less emphasis on coursework over the two years and more on final exams. Most GCSE results in England are now being graded from 9 to 1, with 7 the equivalent to A and 4 a C grade. Early figures provided by West Sussex schools and academies combined show: • The proportion of West Sussex students achieving the pass level Grade 4 is in line with the average of 66.6% across England • Schools’ Attainment 8 scores (the average of their students’ grades across eight key subjects) were similar to last year despite the changes

Richard Burrett, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said: “Students have had to learn far more for these tougher exams so it is testament to their hard work and determination to succeed that this has been translated into some brilliant results. “Individual schools will be celebrating some quite outstanding results on the back of last week’s strong A Level results. Much of this success is down to the excellent teaching and school support.” Students who did not achieve the grades they wanted are encouraged to speak to their school or college about the opportunities still available to them. The results are provisional until the Department for Education issues more detailed examination results later this year and the figures have been confirmed.

Another fantastic result - Tanbridge House School obtains ‘stellar’ GCSE grades Tanbridge House School is again delighted by another stellar set of GCSE results. Whilst all schools in England have to wait for a national database in order to provide a ‘final’ academic Progress Score, we already know enough to be confident that our student body has done exceptionally well.

Get in touch The District Post Ltd The Bottings 26 North Street Horsham West Sussex RH12 1RQ

Results in areas such as English, Maths, Science and a host of other subjects are very strong and reflect the dedication of the students themselves and my colleagues at Tanbridge House School. As ever, we are extremely grateful for the steadfast support we gain from parents, carers and our wider community.

Strong results were seen in Science, English and Maths with 88.5% of all grades achieved being A*-B. In Maths 52% of all grades achieved were equivalent to an A* or higher. In these results there are some hugely impressive individual performances including 28 pupils achieving at least 8 A*. Congratu-

lations should go to: Conor Stewart 12 A* (1 of which was Lv 9) Helena Thornton 11A* (1 of which was Lv 9) Lottie Field 11A*(1 of which was A** in FM) Elise Farquhar 10 A* (1 of which was Lv 9) Heilia Leung 10 A* 3A Luke Saunders 10 A* 1A Lucy Liu 10 A* 1A Lilith Weingarten 9 A* (1 of which was Lv 9) Olivia Berry 9 A* 1A These results and achievements are made all the more remarkable given the new, more challenging specifications and terminal examinations after recent reforms. Simon Reid, Headmaster of Christ’s Hospital, commented: “Signs of great individual achievement aside – and there are many of them – as a GCSE cohort, our students have done very well, indeed. They and their teachers have had to manage yet more change in the arrangements for assessment at this age-group and these results speak of crosscurricular health and genuine ambition. These results are a superb platform from which to build Sixth Form experience and I look forward with poignant interest to working with the group as they move forward and up.”

Farlington’s GCSE Success Ms Louise Higson, Farlington School’s Headmistress, commented on the School’s impressive GCSE results: “Congratulations to the Year 11 girls at Farlington on their excellent GCSE examination results! With 58% A/A*s and 63% of 9 to 7 grades, there is much to celebrate. We are delighted with their performance; these brilliant results

are no less than the girls deserve and are a reflection of their hard work and desire to succeed. “My appreciation and thanks go to all their teachers; their passion and commitment are key in providing the excellent teaching and support which enables the girls to achieve outstanding results across a broad range of subjects.”

Just under a month to go until inaugural Vélo South

New 100-mile closed road sportive to take place on Sunday, 23 September The 100-mile sportive, which starts and finishes at Goodwood Motor Circuit on Sunday 23 September, will take cyclists on an unforgettable journey on closed roads through the spectacular countryside of West Sussex. With thousands of cyclists riding for charity, Vélo South is expected to raise a substantial amount for both local and national charities. General entries sold out within days of going on sale last March, but a limited number of places for the UK’s second-largest cycling event have been reserved for West Sussex residents, who can still enter by emailing hello@velosouth. com. Sign-ups are also available through Vélo South’s Lead Charity Partners – Alzheimer’s Society, Age UK, Restart Rugby and the British Heart Foundation. Community events have been organised to celebrate the event. The Queens Head Pub in Barns Green will be a ‘cheer point’ for cyclists riding in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society and villagers are also getting in on the fundraising act. During a 12-hour celebration at the pub, to be held from 10am-10pm and featuring live music, four teams will contest a sponsored 100-mile race on exercise bikes. The Lintot Pub in Southwater is staging a family BBQ, featuring a live local band, balloon artist and face painting, while the East Ashling Association is throwing a Vélo South-themed lunch party on the village green. In Lavant, the Parish Council is organising a ‘Cycling Sunday’ event for all age groups. As well as a best-dressed bicycle competition supported by Lavant Primary School and The Royal Oak, ‘Dr Bike’ will be offering free bike repair and maintenance advice while West Sussex County Council’s Bikeability Team will be overseeing fun cycling

activities. Picnics are welcome and refreshments will be available for local residents at the Memorial Hall. Central to the smooth running of what will be one of the biggest sporting events the county has ever hosted, are the 250 West Sussex residents who have signed up as volunteers. To join them and help contribute to the successful delivery of this major sporting event, email: volunteer@velosouth.com Vélo South is set to provide a significant boost to West Sussex tourism and the local economy, with 15,000 entrants, and their friends and families, travelling to West Sussex for the event. They will be treated to such highlights as Ducton Hill, with its views across the Sussex Weald, and picturesque villages like Ashington, Wiston and Partridge Green. Wey & Arun Canal, considered ‘London’s lost route to the sea’, will also be a key feature, along with the panoramic hill-top views of Harting Down and the feeling of cycling through Provence as participants pass the spectacular Lordington Lavender. Several famous faces will be saddling up to enjoy the spectacular views including England’s Rugby World Cup-winning skipper Martin Johnson CBE and two Olympic gold-medallists – local girl Sally Gunnell OBE, riding for Age UK West Sussex, and rower Mark Hunter MBE, who triumphed at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The 15,000-strong field will also be filled with inspirational entrants, including Emsworth-based Dave Acres, riding in memory of son Will who died earlier this year from Pulmonary Hypertension (PH), a rare condition affecting the heart and lungs. Retired pilot, Graham Watson, is aiming to celebrate his 70th birthday by completing his firstever 100-mile cycle challenge at

Vélo South. The Aldingbourne resident is also raising money for the British Heart Foundation, which has played a pivotal role in keeping him healthy after being diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat in 2013. Vélo South organisers have been working closely with local government and emergency service stakeholders to mitigate potential issues caused by road closures across the 100-mile route that are necessary to ensure the safety of cyclists. Access for all emergency services will be facilitated throughout the road closures and will be prioritised during the event. Members of the public should follow normal protocol when reporting an emergency. On-call doctors, district nurses and emergency vets, plus community welfare services, carers, farmers, equine centre or other animal care providers who have access concerns are urged to contact route@velosouth.com to enable event organisers to assist them during Vélo South. Several local access plans have been developed to assist local communities, which can be viewed within the road closure section of event website www. velosouth.com. If any local residents have any questions or access requests relating to Vélo South, they are encouraged to email route@velosouth.com. Nearby businesses and residents should also note parking will be suspended along the route on event day. Traffic enforcement notices will be issued two weeks in advance and anyone affected is urged to find an alternative parking location for their vehicle. For more information about Vélo South, visit: www.velosouth. com Facebook.com/Velosouth100Twitter.com/Velosouth

Join Georgie’s free local Heritage Walks! Bill’s Restaurant in Horsham’s Market Square and set off on foot for a gentle walk for half an hour or so to explore the topic of the month. Previous walks have included Horsham stone – which adorns many old roofs in the district and is still being quarried – St Mary’s Church in Horsham’s historic Causeway – and the Riverside Walk. And, last month we covered the rather gruesome subject of John George Haigh!” Dubbed “The Acid Bath Murderer”, the notorious Haigh was arrested and held in custody in Cell 2 of the former Horsham Police Station in Barttelot Road and was subsequently charged with murder in the courthouse of the Old Town Hall – now Bill’s Restaurant in Market Square. A huge crowd gathered to witness Local resident Georgie Hawkins is enthralled and inspired by history – especially the history of Horsham and the surrounding area – and there is nothing that Georgie loves more than to share her knowledge and enjoyment with like-minded enthusiasts. So, Georgie has set up an informal programme of popular heritage walks on the last Friday of each month. The walks are

well-researched and free to join with participants having the option to make a donation to the excellent work of St Christopher’s Hospice. A wide range of topics has already been covered, Georgie telling the District Post: “This Friday’s walk features Horsham’s East Street area and the only thing to come along with is appropriate footwear – and, of course, an inquisitive nature! Search on for ‘most deserving’ older person in West Sussex

Older people play a vital role in the family and wider community, sharing their knowledge and experiences as well as offering a caring hand. Highwood Mill, Horsham’s new retirement development, are asking residents of Sussex to nominate an older person who positively benefits those around them. Entitled the ‘Most Deserving’ award, this is the second accolade in Highwood Mill’s series to reward those who are going the extra mile. Rachel Richards, of Highwood Mill, said: “Nominate an older person in your community who goes above and beyond selflessly. This could be due to their commitment to keeping the local park clean, or family duties such as taking the grandchildren out for the day, or even a neighbour popping in to walk the dog while someone’s at work.

“We want to find and reward an inspirational local hero so the older generation can see how appreciated they truly are.” The lucky winner will be given an all-expenses paid afternoon tea for eight people at Highwood Mill, which could be turned into a family occasion, or a catch-up with old friends. They will also be lucky enough to walk away with an engraved trophy to commemorate the achievement. Nominations are now open, and people are being urged to put their ‘Most Deserving’ person into the spotlight. To make a submission, email deservingawards@pmwcom. co.uk with a short description of the nominee, why they deserve to win, their contact details and the area they live in. Please also include your own contact details. Nominations can be made until midnight on Sunday 9 September.

Haigh’s arrival and departure – he went into the court via the external staircase (which subsequently became the entrance to the now vacated Horsham Registry Office), near the Bear pub. Convicted for the murder of six people, although he claimed to have killed nine, former choirboy Haigh, from a respectable family, had previously been imprisoned for fraud and, thinking that he had made the mistake of leaving his victims alive, enabling them to report him, he devised a plan to dissolve bodies in acid to avoid detection after stealing from his targets. He rented a workshop in Leopold Road, near Crawley Hospital and after luring his unsuspecting prey there he murdered them and sought to dispose of their remains. Haigh, though, was

apprehended when a friend of his final victim told the police that she was missing, whereupon the investigating detectives discovered Haigh’s criminal record, leading them to the Leopold Road premises. There, renown pathologist Keith Simpson unveiled the macabre truth. The jury took no time to find Haigh guilty and he was executed in Wandsworth prison in 1949, aged 40. Georgie promises that future walks will be of a far more wholesome variety! A visit to Warnham is being considered as a possible subsequent topic and Georgie looks forward to meeting fellow enthusiasts on her last Friday of the month Heritage Horsham walks – Georgie Hawkins - gmhawks55@gmail.com – 07782 310408.

Give an assistance dog the best start in life

Volunteers are needed to offer the best start in life to a puppy training to be an assistance dog for charity Canine Partners. The Midhurst based charity is looking for puppy parents in West Sussex to provide their puppies with the love, care and skills they need to get ready for the next stage of their training. Rachel MacDonald, a 45-year-old mum of two from Bognor Regis, is currently a puppy parent with her first puppy-in-training, black Labrador Morley: “Being a volunteer for Canine Partners is something we talked about doing when life became less crazy and when our two sons were older but then three years ago life changed. We sadly lost my lovely husband Paul, and we all felt a bit lost. Before he

passed away, Paul said to me he felt kids and dogs would work for me, and he was so right, dogs are very healing.” Canine Partners trains amazing assistance dogs to transform the lives of people with disabilities, boosting their confidence and independence. The dogs are taught a range of everyday tasks, including picking up and fetching items, opening doors and dressing a person. They can even help to load and unload a washing machine, and fetch help in an emergency. Puppies-in-training live in the volunteer’s home, from around eight-weeks-old until they are ready to start advanced training between 12 and 14 months, at the Southern Training Centre near Midhurst or the Midlands Training Centre in Leicestershire. “The most important thing when being a puppy parent is to give your time to it,” continued Rachel, “If I didn’t have the time I have, I wouldn’t be able to put so much into training him and I wouldn’t get so much back.” Canine Partners’ expert trainers are on hand to support puppy parents, as training involves home visits, one-to-ones, town visits and puppy classes in order to socialise the puppy and get them used to all

situations they may need to be in as a fully trained canine partner. Rachel added: “The puppy department are on hand all the time to guide you and you are not alone at all. I am always honest with them, because I am so keen to get this right for Morley, and I want him to go on and be an amazing assistance dog, so for us as a family for him to go on and do great things and transform someone’s life is what it’s all about.” To become a puppy parent in one of Canine Partners’ 13 puppy satellites across the country, including West Sussex, you need to be aged 18 or over, not work full time, and be willing to make a long term commitment. Rachel: “If you’re thinking about being a puppy parent, I say go for it, but keep in mind the great thing that is going to come out at the end of it. “We have got so much out of having Morley, as he brings a lot of joy, and when he is done healing us and making us happy, he will go on and help someone living with a disability who needs him.” To find out more about becoming a puppy parent for Canine Partners, please visit caninepartners.org.uk/ get-involved/volunteering/puppyparents/, call 08456 580 480 or email info@caninepartners.org.uk

Cats Protection: Paws to Listen

Yesterday (August 30) was Grief Awareness Day. Throughout the nation, it is widely known that there are services available to handle the grief of losing a loved one. But what might not be known to so many is that there is a service specifically aimed at those who have lost a beloved feline friend. Stuart Sheppard, Cats Protection Contact Centre Manager, wanted to let our readers know that the centre offers a grief support service called Paws to Listen: “For many, losing a cat can be a very traumatic experience, and there can be a lack of understanding from family and friends about how deeply the loss can impact on a person. A survey carried out for Cats Protection, earlier this month, highlighted that 73 per cent

of pet owners feel it can be as difficult and upsetting grieving for a pet as it is grieving for the loss of a person*. “Cats Protection understands just how much your cat means to you and what you may be going through if your pet is missing, has had to be rehomed, nearing the end of their life or has recently passed away. We have a large range of resources, information and support to help you at this difficult time, including ways to celebrate the life of your cat. “If you’re experiencing the loss of your cat, you can talk to us on 0800 024 9494 between 9am-5pm Monday to Friday, excluding bank holidays. It’s a free and confidential service and our volunteer listeners can provide emotional support and practical information. “If you feel that you need to talk to someone then please give the Paws to Listen service a call. “We all need to be mindful of the emotional impact that losing a pet can have on a person.” *online survey conducted by Atomik Research among 1,000 employed adults who have experienced the loss of a pet during their working life. The research took place between 10 and 13 August 2018.

The Billy Joel Songbook returns to The Capitol

In 2013 and again in 2014, Elio Pace was invited to ‘fill Billy Joel’s shoes, starring in five very special reunion concerts in the USA with Joel’s original 1971-72 touring band, recreating the historic WMMR Sigma Sounds live recordings. This incredible honour inspired Elio to fulfil a lifetime ambition of creating a theatre show showcasing the wonderful songbook of six-time Grammy award winner, Billy Joel. And so, ‘THE BILLY JOEL SONGBOOK performed by ELIO PACE and his band’ was born. Elio took to the road in 2014 with the FIRST EVER Billy Joel Songbook national theatre tour

anywhere in the WORLD, enthralling audiences at 70 venues around the UK and Ireland. In 2015, Elio and the band were featured by Sky Sports in their BAFTA-winning TV and online coverage of the 2015 Ashes cricket tournament, with a specially re-written version of Billy Joel’s ‘We Didn’t Start The Fire’. By 2016, in only its third year, The Billy Joel Songbook was playing to packed houses across the country, selling-out, not only one, but sometimes two nights in a row at the same venue, with some venues asking for a third. This incredible success continued for a fourth year in 2017, with yet another mammoth 70-date

UK & Ireland tour, as well as travelling to mainland Europe for the first time for a hugely successful national tour of Holland. The success of The Billy Joel Songbook went up another level in May 2018, when Elio introduced the Billy Joel ALBUMS SHOWS tour; a brand-new series of, yet again, ‘never-done-before’ concerts featuring Joel albums in their entirety, one in each half of the show. For this debut tour, performing the albums, ‘Glass Houses’ and ‘An Innocent Man’, Elio and his band were joined by American lead guitarist, David Brown who played in Billy Joel’s band from 1978-91 and featured on those original classic albums. Another tour of Holland is booked for November 2018, with Elio and The Billy Joel Songbook set to travel to other European territories, and further afield, throughout 2019. So this upcoming fifth UK tour of The Billy Joel Songbook (September/October) will be the last chance that UK fans will have to see this sensational and critically acclaimed show in Great Britain, for at least 18 months. With Billy Joel choosing to perform a mere one or two international shows every few years, there are many fans out there that have never had the opportunity to hear his music live. ‘The Billy Joel Songbook’, packed with over 30 of Joel’s hits and fan favourites, will give everyone a fantastic opportunity to hear his wonderful songbook played and sung by the brilliant Elio Pace and his magnificent6-piece band. Performance: Saturday 29 September, The Capitol Theatre, Horsham. Tickets: Available online: www.thecapitolhorsham. com or via The Capitol Box Office: 01403 750220

with a variety of exciting activities themed around wildlife and the changing seasons; from bug hunting to leaf collages, campfire lighting to mud kitchen, there is something for everyone. Tamara explained: “The sessions are all about getting outdoors and developing physical co-

ordination, confidence, and social skills, through child-led achievable challenges, while having a lot of fun along the way. I hope these groups will spark a life-long love of the natural environment. “We encourage the children to try as much of the activity as they can for themselves, and parents are often amazed at how resourceful and capable their children can become as the weeks go by.” Nature Tots sessions for ages 3-5 run from 10am-12pm at Chesworth Farm, Horsham on Monday mornings during school term time. Wildlife Watch nature and bushcraft sessions for ages 5-11 run once a month on Saturday mornings. Now booking for September. Children must be accompanied by an adult and booking is essential. Durrants Village offers sweet spot for retirement homes in the South East

New research from Inspired Villages Group (IVG), the operator and developer of later living accommodation behind Durrants Village retirement village in Faygate, has revealed ‘Last Time Buyers’[1] in the South East favour two bedroom properties and lateral living for their later years. The retirement living provider, which is a partner of FTSE100 financial services group Legal & General, conducted a report with the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) to determine the amount and type of retirement housing needed to meet the requirements of those aged over 55 who are planning to make their last home move in the coming years. The report revealed the following: ·66.9% of homeowners over the age of 55 in the South East currently live in a three or four bedroom property, with 32.4% saying their

current property is too big for them, and 30.2% saying their home is no longer suited to their needs ·62.8% of homeowners ideally want to live in a two bedroom property, with 36% saying they would like to have lateral living such as in a bungalow ·47.1% of homeowners said when considering making a move, they would like to stay within five miles of where they are currently living in the South East, with 23% saying they would like to live near family and friends and 23% saying they would like to stay in the same area they are living now ·18% of homeowners said they have considered, or would consider, moving to a retirement village Durrants Village is set amongst 30 acres of idyllic parkland in the hamlet of Faygate and close to the market town of Horsham. Surrounded by beautiful West Sussex countryside, but also within easy

reach of London, Durrants Village offers the best of both worlds for over 55s looking to make a smart downsizing move. The village is comprised of predominantly two bedroom properties; a mixture of two bedroom apartments and two and three bedroom cottages. All of the properties are finished to the highest standard, with spacious rooms, stylish fixtures and fittings, and a private terrace or balcony. All of the apartments are set over one level, offering lateral living, and the upper floor apartments all have lift access. The cottages feature a downstairs bedroom, which can otherwise be used as a study or guest bedroom, and bathroom in case lateral living is needed in later life or temporarily, and which can otherwise be used as an additional reception room or study. The homes at Durrants Village centre around an on-site clubhouse that provides a range of country

club-style facilities, including a restaurant, bar, lounge, swimming pool, gym and library. Within the landscaped grounds there is also a croquet lawn, a lake complete with duck houses and a lake house for residents to enjoy. The latest phase of cottages has recently launched at the village, which overlook the idyllic lake and which each come with a garden room that leads outdoors to a garden terrace with views over the lake. Among the national findings in the Last Time Buyers research, the report found that more than half a million Last Time Buyers in the UK would be open to moving to a retirement village at some stage, with 45% believing this option would offer them a lower maintenance lifestyle. At Durrants Village, an onsite maintenance team looks after the communal areas and landscaped gardens of the village, and is on hand to help with home maintenance and DIY when needed. The report also found that there are 187,900 Last Time Buyer households in the UK who would potentially want to move to a retirement property in 2018; the research figures further showed there is potential demand for around 16,500 new retirement homes in 2019 and 16,800 in 2020, revealing an increasing demand for specialist retirement housing. Phil Bayliss, Head of Later Living at Legal & General, commented: “With only 7,000 new retirement homes being delivered in the UK each year, this report demonstrates an extraordinary need for more homes and communities designed specifically for those entering retirement. Legal & General is utilising its patient capital to bring the necessary scale of supply to this underserved sector of the housing market, with ambitions to build the IVG national footprint to over 50 sites by 2023.”

Roffey win the league fourth time in five years! termined to press on and Turner, Pocklington and David Twine cut loose with 8 sixes and 12 fours between them, but there was far too much for them to do, Roffey winning by 116 runs with a red hot Ben Manenti catch rounding off Rohit Jagota’s 4-30, Leigh Harrison and Luke Barnard finishing with two wickets apiece. Any team would be thrilled to win the league - Roffey were- but celebrations were muted because

Saturday August 25 - Sussex Premier League Roffey 321-5 (50 overs)-Eastbourne 205 all out (35.3 overs) Roffey won by 116 runs - Roffey 30 points - Eastbourne 8 points Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter After their hat trick of league titles from 2014-2016, last year Roffey were mighty disappointed to be runners up, narrowly missing coming the first side in the 47 year history of the Sussex Premier League to win the league in four consecutive years. Only two other sides have pulled off a hat trick of titles, but that was no consolation for Roffey- they were determined to regain the crown-and they did-in style, in the make or break game against Eastbourne last Saturday, the team breathing down their neck for much of the season. After the 10.30 start to accommodate Roffey’s long trip to Penzance next day-at Eastbourne’s high scoring Saffrons ground Roffey took full advantage

of wining the toss by posting the highest league score of the day, courtesy of a typically entertaining 116 from Jibran Khan, 33 from Ben Manenti and, as the innings accelerated, trademark fifties from Paul Harrison and skipper Matt Davies, seven bowlers being unable to stem the flow of runs. There was a short boundary on one side and the outfield was fast, but a target of 322 boosted by 46 extras, including 37 wides - was a stiff one with much depending on the host’s prolific opener James Hockley, who had scored 240 against Brighton at the Saffrons earlier in the month. Between innings, Rofey Coach Simon Fearnley said: “Much depends on Hockley and if we take early wickets then scoreboard pressure should work in our favour.” And, in no time Eastbourne were 9-2 with Hockley run out for a duck. Inside 10 overs, the hosts had slumped to 53-5 and, before the half way mark they were 123-8, by which time Roffey had surely won the league. Eastbourne, though de-

We’re all absolutely chuffed and we’ll celebrate as soon as we can their concentration switched to the important cup games that they still have to play-starting with the National Vitality T20 Regional Final in Cornwall next day, Matt Davies telling The District Post: “We’re all absolutely chuffed and we’ll celebrate as soon as we can , but right now we need to get back to Roffeyto get the mini bus to Plymouth for our overnight stop ahead of the Penzance game tomorrow!” Roffey return home on Saturday for their last league game of the season-the much savoured local derby against Horsham, who inflicted Roffey’s only league defeat-with an exceptionally strong strong team at Cricketfield Road in June. then, on Sunday, Roffey have yet another big cup game, travelling to Stanmore in the Semi Final of the England & Wales Cricket Board National Club Championship.

Horsham win last home game in style

Photo by Clive Turner Saturday August 25-Sussex Premier League Middleton 252-4 (50 overs)Horsham 256-3 (39.2 overs) Horsham won by 7 wickets-Horsham 24 points -Middleton 11 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter In Horsham’s last home match

of the season they completed a relatively comfortable win over eighth placed Middleton, whom batted first, making 252-5 from their 50 overs -an intermediate score on Horsham’s excellent batting surface. Evergreen Sean Heather with 107 and Mahesh Rawat with 77-the visitors’ most consistent batsmen-were the principal

contributors, taking their side from 80-2 to 212-3 in a 132 run third wicket stand, Mika Ekstrom and Tom Haines each taking two wickets. Replying, Horsham recovered from an early loss to reach 164 before the second wicket fell, Haines going on to score 106 with Captain for the day Craig Gallagher getting 65 and Nick Oxley returning to form with 39 not out, enabling Horsham to win seven wickets with more then 10 overs unused, Middleton’s eight bowlers being unable to make sufficiently meaningful inroads. Craig Gallagher told the District Post: “We did well to restrict them to a manageable score on another good Horsham wicket. A requirement of five an over wasn’t too onerous and we knocked off the runs to win quite easily in the end. Tom (Haines) was in top form and it was great to see Nick (Oxley) finish off the job.” On Saturday-the last week of the league season -Horsham, fourth with 344 points, seven behind Preston Nomads, visit near neighbours Roffey, whom they beat with an exceptionally strong side at Cricketfield Road in June.

Roffey push through to National T20 Finals Day Sunday August 26 - ECB National Vitality Club T20 Regional Final Penzance 134-3 (15 overs) Roffey 136-4 (13.5 overs) Roffey won by 6 wickets Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Roffey’s 500 mile round trip to the far reaches of Cornwall paid dividends, their well judged win earning them a place in the National T20 Finals Day on Sunday September 16. The weather forecast for Penzance was not encouraging but Roffey travelled down overnight, breaking their journey in Devon after securing the Sussex Premier League title at Eastbourne earlier in the day. Because of the congestion of fixtures, a result had to be obtained in Cornwall, even if the decision rested on a bowl out of the toss of a coin. However, the game eventually got underway at 17.15 in light drizzle, on a reduced over basis. Penzance, third in Cornwall’s Premier League, were put in to bat when Roffey won the toss and in difficult, wet conditions for bowlers and fielders they set Roffey a 135 run target. After being 13-2, an unbeaten 56 from their Captain and Head Coach Greg Smith, the former Derbyshire and Essex professional, accompanied by 59 from Brad Wadlan required Roffey to score at nine runs an over. In reply Roffey lost a wicket before a run was on the board, but Theo Rivers, Rohit Jagota

and Paul Harrison steadied the ship, Jagota and Harrison (38) putting on 70 for the third wicket, Roffey going on to win with seven balls to spare. Roffey Captain Matt Davies told The District Post: “We knew we had to bat well, but it was a flat deck and a short boundary on one side. Rohit had a big game-he bowled well, taking 2-14, and then scored 63 not out from 38 balls to get us through to Finals Day in Derby.” Roffey Coach Simon Fearnley added: “The outfield was greasy and slippery and we got off to a flier with early fours, that set the tone for us, Rohit and Paul chasing very impressively.” Penzance said: “Our two quickfire fifties weren’t quite enough to overcome a talented Roffey side-congratulations to them and best of luck to their boys on Finals Day!” At Derby Roffey will play Hanging Heaton from Batley, West Yorkshirethird in the Bradford Leaguewith the winner playing either Nantwich from the lower reaches of the Cheshire County League Premier Division or Swardeston from just south of Norwich. Swardeston won the National T20 title in 2016 and were in the Final of the Royal London National Club Championship in the same year. They are captained by former Sussex player Joe Gatting ) who scored an unbeaten 160 and took two wickets for them last Saturday). Currently second in the East Anglian League, Swardeston won the title in the five consecutive seasons from 2012-2016

Premier League round up Saturday August 25-Sussex Premier League In the penultimate round of Premier League matches this season, at Brighton, East Grinstead won the toss and posted 306-7 from their 50 overs, their two former Sussex pros-Captain Will Adkin and Fynn Hudson-Prentice scoring 130 and 88 respectively, despite another ex Sussex player, Matt Machan, taking 5-48. Replying, Brighton & hove reached 129-1 with Bryce Hounsome and Captain Simon Hetherton contributing forties. Unusually, Lewis Hatchett, also previously with the county, was wicketless, but Le Granger’s 6-26 enabled

Grinstead to win by 55 runs. At Horntye Park preston Nomads won the toss and put 305-6 on the board, Harrison Ward making 123. Hastings’ fragile batting returned to haunt them, Kashif Ibrahim taking 4-32 as the hosts subsided to 158 all out. Meanwhile, Ifield were inserted by visitors Cuckfield, but could only muster 124, Dan Smith top scoring with 32. Josh Hayward took 4-16, Cuckfield then won by seven wickets with ease. With the final round on matches to come on Saturday, Preston Nomads are third, East Grinstead fifth, Brighton sixth, Cuckfield seventh, Middleton eighth with the bottom of two clubs-Hastings and Ifield-already relegated.

Horsham cup successes but league frustration

Photo by John Lines Tuesday August 21 - Velocity Trophy Preliminary Round Haywards Heath 2 5 Horsham Saturday August 25 - FA Cup Preliminary Round - Carshalton Athletic 0 1 Horsham Monday August 27 - Bostik League South East Division Horsham 4 5 Haywards Heath

Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter In the Velocity Trophy Horsham travelled to last season’s Southern Combination League Champions Haywards Heath to eliminate them in style, courtesy of goals from Rob O’Toole, Tyrell Richardson-Brown, George Landais and two from Chris Smith. Then, in the FA Cup Preliminary Round they knocked out Bostik Premier League side Carshalton Athletic - the Robins - at the Surrey side’s Colston Avenue ground. In the early stages of the latter encounter Carshalton had the first

opportunity, but shot wide before the Hornets’ Chris Smith was floored without sanction. Both sides were striving not to concede any advantage and another Smith foray was negated as O’Toole and Smith continued to press the opposition defence. Carshalton also had chances, but were off target and the score remained goal-less at the interval. After the break, Horsham keeper Josh Pelling saved without difficulty as both sides defended well. But, Pelling did have to be at his best to keep out Dixon’s blast, the same player subsequently heading over - until the Hornets seized the opportunity presented by a free kick just beyond the D. Up stepped Charlie Harris to calmly twist the ball past the wall and into the top right corner of the goal with Carshalton keeper Billy Bishop unable to prevent Horsham from snatching the match after the last few minutes had been safely negotiated, Manager Dom Di Paola saying: “It was

a great victory, we got the tactics right and everyone was on it and now we’ve got to focus on Monday’s game v Haywards Heath, because they’ll be tough.” Di Paola’s assessment of Haywards Heath was justified in the Monday Bank Holiday league game. Although Horsham had recently beaten Heath relatively comfortably - and Heath had exited the FA Cup at the Extra Preliminary stage - on Monday Heath showed greater resolve when it really mattered, the game ending in frustrating defeat for Horsham and their supporters after the Hornets had been 3 nil up in the 16th minute through Rob O’Toole, Darren Boswell and Tyrell Richardson-Brown. Yet, Heath might have scored first, had Kane Louis been on target, but when they did manage to claw back a goal midway through the half, it seemed of little importance as Horsham went into the break with a two goal cushion. Resuming, a Horsham opportunity was unfulfilled before former Hornet Karl Akehurst drilled home from close range and worse followed when Heath sub Lewis Finney equalised after a defensive error. Horsham, though, regained the lead when Chris Smith found the net. However, Heath kept pushing and another former Horsham player - Max Miller restored parity with Horsham’s defence in porous mode. Then Horsham’s worst nightmare unfolded when a defensive mix up allowed Finney to latch onto a bodged clearance, the ball going in off the crossbar to give Heath all three points in the dying moments of the game. Horsham will be looking to bounce back from this shock disappointment when they visit Whyteleafe on Saturday and - in the Velocity Trophy Round 1 - Bracknell Town on Tuesday.

Spirited Bears tested by Chi’ City before seeing off CDG Tuesday August 21 - Southern Combination Football League: Premier Division - Chichester City 0 0 Broadbridge Heath Saturday August 25 - Peter Bentley Cup - Broadbridge Heath 1 2 Chichester City Tuesday August 28 - Southern Combination Football League: Premier Division - Broadbridge Heath 5 4 Crawley Down Gatwick Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Broadbridge Heath did well to hold hotly-tipped title contenders Chichester City in the league at Oaklands Park. Both sides had chances, Devon Fender and Lee Carney testing Jordan Matthews in the Chichester goal before the interval and George Cousins and Fender pressing in the second half, but the defences held secure, YM and the hosts having to be content with sharing the points. The two sides met again four days later, this time in the Peter Bentley Cup at the Leisure Centre. The Bears almost drew first blood when a Ben Hands dipper was thwarted by the crossbar. But a difficult task became even harder in the 17th minute when a blatant foul deprived them of George Cousins’ further participation. Ten minutes later Chichester went ahead

from an unfortunate own goal, BBH remaining one nil down at the break. But, the 10 men equalised soon after the resumption, Hands opening his account for the Bears with a first time volley. Chichester re-took the lead with the decider from a disputed Herbert penalty in the 65th minute. Against Crawley Down Gatwick at the Leisure Centre on Tuesday, spectators were treated to second half goal fest after the visitors had opened the scoring when Oli Lesley burst through to convert from close range. Max Howell restored parity for the Bears only for Lesley to retake the lead just before half time. Broadbridge Heath came back out fighting, Devon Fender levelling the score in two minutes, before George Cousins promptly gave BBH the lead. Howell then made it 4-2 from a rebound with the Bears’ third goal in 10 minutes. Mid way through the second half Fender scored BBH’s fifth following a corner. However, the Crawley visitors kept thrusting, Lesley and Sam Cane both finding the net, but the Bears prevented further damage and were worthy 5-4 winners at the end of the highly entertaining frenetic second half. Broadbridge Heath are next in action on Saturday September 8th with a visit to Lancing in the league

Horsham YMCA great start continues - in Cup and League Tuesday August 21 - Southern Combination Football League: Premier Division - Saltdean United 1 3 Horsham YMCA MATCH ABANDONED Saturday August 25 - FA Cup Preliminary Round - Ashford United 0 2 Horsham YMCA Monday August 27 - Southern Combination Football League: Premier Division - Horsham YMCA 3 0 Loxwood

Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter YMCA’s game against Saltdean United ended tantalisingly poised with YM 3-1 up, but with Saltdean having a penalty to take and 15 minutes of full time remaining. But, the game was abandoned because a Saltdean player was lying on the pitch with a serious-

looking injury after a collision with YM keeper Aaron Jeal. After a prolonged delay the game was called off pending the eventual arrival of an ambulance. In the 23rd minute Toby House had put Saltdean ahead, only for Alex Barbary to promptly level for YM, the score remaining 1-1 at the interval. YM, though secured a two goal advantage through a Mark Cave penalty and a second goal from Barbary. The game will be re-played at Saltdean on Tuesday September 25th. Last Saturday in the FA Cup YM visited Kent’s unbeaten Ashford United from the league above, playing on the 3G pitch at the impressive Homelands Stadium. The early exchanges saw Ashford show glimpses of their attacking threat, hitting the bar after six minutes. Defensively YM worked hard to steer the side through the opening fifteen minutes before

starting to create chances with challenging runs, the second of which resulted in a half chance that fell to Ash Dugdale before Ashford forced Aaron Jeal into the first of several fine saves ensuring that YM went into the break on level terms - 0-0 - after a keenly contested first half. After the break YM created a number of opportunities, continuing with a solid performance against opponents that were quick to close down the space. The breakthrough came just before the hour as for the second week in succession Dan Mobsby produced a fine strike, this time from 25 yards to put YM ahead. YM continued to press forward and produced an incisive team move ending with Sam Schaaf pouncing on the ball on the six yard line to give YM a two goal advantage with just under 30 minutes remaining. The hosts made changes aimed at

getting them into the game and YM had to graft very hard to repel a side that looked to push forward at every opportunity. YM soaked up the pressure, taking the game to the Ashford half, until, with around ten minutes remaining, YM forced a succession of corners, ultimately securing a very satisfying win to reach the First Qualifying Round for the first time since 2015, with a home game against Tooting & Mitcham United on Saturday September 8th. On Bank Holiday Monday YM were back at Gorings Mead, carrying on in good form against Loxwood, Mark Cave striking after nine minutes to put YM ahead. Loxwood responded immediately, forcing a good save from Aaron Jeal, who subsequently kept out a penalty taken by ex YM striker Dean Wright. And, Alex Barbary soon broke clear to finish off a team move to put YM 2-0 up.

Then, just before the interval Barbary headed in at the near post to give YM a 3-0 half time lead. In the second half YM successfully closed down the game to win 3-0, Manager Peter Buckland telling the District Post: “We’ve had a great start to the season despite a number of injuries and games coming up in quick succession. New signings Alex Barbary and Dean Bown have fitted in well and I’m going to have a selection headache when everyone’s fit again!” YM travel to Shoreham for a league fixture on Saturday. Many of YM’s fellow Southern Combination clubs are in FA Vase action that day but YM have an exemption due to their 4th place league finish last season, joining the competition at the 1st Round Proper stage later in the year. Meanwhile, on Tuesday (September 4th) YM play Lancing in the Peter Bentley Cup
