The Bridge Leisure Centre opening date announced After years of planning and negotiation, and over one year of extensive construction work, Horsham District Council is delighted to announce that The Bridge Leisure Centre in Broadbridge Heath will be opening to the public on Saturday 20 October from 9am. One of the most significant Council investments in years, this light and spacious new leisure centre complements the existing Council-owned facilities in Horsham, Billingshurst and Steyning. Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture Cllr Jonathan Chowen said: “I am really pleased that after the many years of planning and preparation that have gone into such a major project, we are now at this exciting stage to announce when our new flagship leisure centre will open. “The new leisure centre represents one of the most significant projects in the Council’s history, with an overall investment of some £12 million. “We have worked extensively with partners, and local sports

clubs, to develop a new sports and leisure facility which will meet and exceed the current and future needs of the growing and ageing community of the Horsham District, and I wish to thank all those who have supported us in reaching this milestone. “The new leisure centre will bring first class leisure opportunities to local people, and we are confident it will exceed all expectations, and provide a centre of excellence for sporting and leisure activity.” Sandra Dodd, Chief Executive of Places for Leisure, the operators of The Bridge Leisure Centre, said: “The new Bridge Leisure Centre is an impressive community venue. As a social enterprise with a mission to create active places and healthy people, we are excited to be able to complement these fantastic facilities with a diverse range of activities to encourage more members of our community to enjoy more active lifestyles. Landlords urged to register for licences as law changes

force on 1 October 2018. Landlords of HMOs, with five or more occupants forming two or more households, need to apply for a licence before this date under the Licensing of Houses in Multiple Occupation (Mandatory Conditions of Licenses) (England) Regulations 2018. Failure to do so, by 1 October 2018, will be a criminal offence. Currently, compulsory licensing only covers HMO properties of three storeys or more with five or more occupants forming two or more households.

However, the new regulations will cover all properties that are let to five or more occupants forming two or more households. The Government has not granted a ‘lead in’, or period of ‘grace’ for the rule change, and so, if you rent out a licensable HMO without a licence from 1 October, you will be breaking the law. Landlords are urged to apply for their licences as soon as possible. Councillor Tricia Youtan, Cabinet Member for Community and Wellbeing at Horsham District Council said: “As a council we welcome this change in the law as it will do much to make sure that rented shared houses and flats are of a good standard, and are safe to live in. “The welfare of tenants in Horsham is a strong priority for us, and we look forward to working with landlords to ensure the new licensing system is a great success. “I’d urge landlords of HMOs to get in touch as soon as possible, so licences can be granted before the new law comes into effect.” For more details on how to apply, please call: 01403 215405, email: Publichealth. licensing@horsham.gov.uk or visit: www.horsham.gov.uk

We need more oncall firefighters now could it be you?

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is launching a new drive to increase its number of on-call firefighters. Over recent years, the number of people available ‘on-call’ to the emergency service has declined. The fire service is now looking to reverse this with a new call to action of ‘Your Community Needs You’. On-call – formerly known as retained – firefighters are a vital part of the emergency service. As a rural county, the service relies on on-call crews to be available to react in their local areas. Fourteen of West Sussex’s 25 fire stations are crewed solely by an on-call workforce. Debbie Kennard, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Safer, Stronger Communities, said: “We are calling on communities to help support our work by asking people who live or work within close proximity to your local fire station to find out more about becoming an on-call firefighter. “On-call firefighters can come from every walk of life, including builders, plumbers, farmers, office staff, together with people who are not currently employed. Previous experience is not required thanks to the comprehensive training programme.” On-call firefighters carry out the same role as a wholetime firefighter, including fires, road traffic collisions, flooding incidents or raising fire safety awareness in the community. The nine West Sussex fire stations in most urgent need of new recruits are: • Storrington • Partridge Green • Turners Hill • Petworth

• Hurstpierpoint • Steyning • East Grinstead • East Preston • Lancing On-call firefighters may have another job, but can be called out via an alerter, which gets activated when they are paged to respond to an emergency. Mum-of-two Katie Gray, is an on-call firefighter at East Preston Fire Station. She said: “Being able to help the community in such a varied role and the adrenaline of not knowing what we are going to is great. There is a steep learning curve when joining the role, because of the wide variety of jobs that we get, such as community events as well as operational calls.” Steven Philby, is an on-call firefighter in Storrington and also a wholetime fighter at Chichester Fire Station. He said: “I was surprised about how quickly you become part of a team and make a difference within the local area; the local community get to know that you are an on-call firefighter.” As part of the drive, fitness sessions will be held in some areas for people to see what level of fitness is required for the role and to find out more about the role. The first session has been organised by Storrington Fire Station and will be held on Saturday 29 September at Impulse Leisure, Chanctonbury from 11.30am to 1.30pm. To find out more about becoming an on-call firefighter, please visit: www.westsussex.gov.uk/fire and select ‘Fire & Rescue recruitment’ or follow West Sussex Fire & Rescue on Facebook & Twitter for updates on events.

The much-heralded inaugural Velo South cycling event scheduled for last Sunday was cancelled because of fears of adverse weather. The 100 mile circular course was to encompass Horsham, Southwater, Billingshurst and Pulborough, and beyond, and some 15,000 riders were expected to participate. Cancellation was confirmed last Thursday evening after the Met Office had issued a yellow warning, predicting that gale force winds would sweep across the region, potentially felling trees and branches and causing severe disruption with

threats of injuries to cyclists, stewards and volunteers, putting pressure on medical staff. Velo South partners included both West Sussex County Council and Horsham District Council and road closure signs had long been in position, causing concern among some residents, farmers and businesses because of the resultant extensive travel and access difficulties. A legal challenge was considered, but the organisers countered protests by pointing out that Velo South would bring in many people to the area, some of whom would require accommodation and other facilities, thereby benefiting the economy. Before the event was called off, the organisers also consulted alternative weather information services, and health and safety experts, and the abandonment decision was taken to prevent wasted journeys

into West Sussex by cyclists, giving them, and the considerable numbers of others affected, ample notice of cancellation. While it was raining on Sunday morning, the wind velocity had reduced significantly with a much improved forecast from noon onwards. All riders will be able to claim refunds for their entry and car parking fees and, while thanking intended participants and their followers for their support and expressing their deep regret, the organisers concluded their announcement by telling disappointed cyclists: “The entire Velo South team are devastated that the event will not take place, but we hope you understand that the good old British weather left us with no alternative. We very much hope we will see you all on the start line next year!”

More than just a charity event; it will be a tonic for all concerned The Pink Gift Fair returns to this year’s calendar on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th September from 9.30am-4pm each day in the heart of Horsham at Parkside with new energy and therapy for all. Admission is £3, which is a direct donation to the charity as is 10% of stallholder’s takings and of course the obligatory raffle. This event is so much more than just another charity fair as it unique in it’s offering of stalls and experiences. Alongside a host of 60 retail therapy stalls comprising of jewellery, home accessories, fashion and accessories, kids collections and toys, books and stationery, food and drink, this year the wellbeing section of the fair will be hugely expanded. Supporting the wellbeing section this year is Total Therapy Studios, a Horsham based therapy and exercise studio located in the centre of Horsham. Total Therapy Studios are a fully integrated clinic that bridges the gap between medicine, therapy and exercise. They will offer you a chance to try yoka, pilates, talk to professionals about hypnotherapy, massage, acupuncture, running and overall mobility. Sarah Dover-McCarthy, owner and practice director says, “We are delighted to be part of this event, held in such a worthy cause. and studies showed that visibility for road users accessing the A24 could be improved there. The junction, including kerbs and the traffic island, will be moved

between four and five metres to the south. The verge will be widened on the north side of Bell Road and the road widened on the south side. This will give improved visibility to the north for traffic turning south out of Bell Road. Work is due to start on 8 October, subject to factors such as severe weather. The project will take about six weeks to complete, during which Bell Road will be closed to through traffic for most of the time, with a diversion via Knob Hill. Access for residents will be maintained. A West Sussex Highways spokesperson said: “This project will provide a better access arrangement on to the busy A24. “We apologise for any inconvenience caused during the works but please be assured we will do all we can to try to limit this as much as possible.” The project will cost about £120,000.

Council wins appeal to remove Gypsies from Billingshurst site Horsham District Council has won an appeal to remove Gypsies and Travellers from a site at Kingfisher Farm near Billingshurst, West Sussex. In June and July 2018 a Pub-

As a council, we do fully recognise the concerns of local residents, and also the need to make provision for the Gypsy and Traveller community lic Inquiry was instigated by the Planning Inspectorate to discuss and debate the planning merits of the Council’s enforcement notices which had been issued on the site back in June 2016. The Council received the Inspector’s report on 17 September supporting its recommendations to close down the site to Gypsies and Travellers and return the land to agricultural use. The occupants now have 14 months to vacate the site.

Commenting on the Inspectorate’s decision, Cabinet Member for Planning and Development, Cllr Claire Vickers, said: “As a council, we do fully recognise the concerns of local residents, and also the need to make provision for the Gypsy and Traveller community. “However, the ongoing breaches of planning control at this site are not tolerable going forward. “I am now relieved that the Inspector has recognised these concerns and appropriate action will be taken. Cllr Tricia Youtan, Cabinet Member for Community and Wellbeing and local Member for Itchingfield, Slinfold and Warnham, added: “I am pleased that this decision has been reached after a long period of concern for local residents. “Thanks must go to the Itchingfield Parish Council, and also officers of Horsham District Council, who spent a large amount of time and effort on this issue. Their hard work, determination, and diligence, has been justly rewarded”.

Council alerts householders not to be caught out by bogus fly-tippers

Horsham District Council took to the streets on Friday (21 September) to launch a campaign in Horsham Town Centre, raising awareness of the liability of householders using tradespeople and waste removers who do not have a valid Waste Carrier Licence, and who then illegally fly-tip their waste. The campaign, spearheaded by the Council’s Cabinet Member for Waste, Recycling and Cleansing Cllr Philip Circus, was developed in response to the growing problem of tradespeople and others dumping

household waste illegally across the District. As part of the campaign, half a tonne of rubbish was “dumped” in the town centre, attracting much attention from passers-by, some of whom took to social media to report the fly-tipping incident. Members of the Council’s Waste and Recycling team then revealed that it had been a staged exercise to make the public aware that they may be liable to prosecution if their household waste is fly-tipped in this way. Cllr Circus explained: “Fly-tip-

ping is a blight on our communities and costs the council tax payer significant amounts of money to clear-up and investigate. “We’re working hard to catch fly-tippers. But everyone has a responsibility to check that anyone disposing of their waste will behave responsibly. So people need to find out if they are dealing with somebody who has a Waste Carrier Licence or they themselves, as well as the fly-tipper, could be prosecuted by the Council. “There are many reputable, licenced carriers in the district. Please always check so you don’t get caught out. You can also take unwanted items to your local recycling centre for free, or donate to a local charity if it’s still in a good condition – some charities will collect for free.” Residents and businesses need to check that anyone disposing of their waste has a valid Waste Carrier Licence which is a legal requirement. To check whether a person is a registered waste carrier, or to find a legitimate one, please visit www.environment-agency.gov.uk Or for more information about fly-tipping, how to report it, or ways to dispose of your waste legally please visit www.horsham. gov.uk/waste If you have any concerns about waste carriers or fly tipping, please contact the Council’s Waste and Recycling team onwww.horsham.gov.uk/bins/reportit or call them on 01403 733144.

Collyer’s Students Shine on Gold Expedition

Students from Collyer’s have successfully completed their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award Expedition. The group of 20 travelled over 40 miles through the mountains of the Brecon Beacons, with students tackling southern Britain’s highest peak, Pen Y Fan, and a circular route, which took in some of the remotest areas of South Wales. All of the teams travelled independently, staying in wild campsites with only the most basic of facilities. James Gordon, Head of Faculty for Business, Sport and Social

Sciences said: “Completing this arduous challenge is without doubt a phenomenal achievement. The incredibly hot conditions made this a truly challenging expedition, requiring technical discipline, people skills and utter determination. To be absolutely honest, it was a case of these brilliant young people achieving almost the impossible. Well done to everyone involved!” Group 1 comprised: Beth Budgen, Ayla Komezec, Harry Sale, Amy Mallows, Will Woolnough; Joel Boyd and Harry Carter. Group 2: Josh Barnett, Kieran Minihane, Connor Heathcote, George Makin;

Darby Lyons, Klara Dowds and Hannah Gower. With group 3 featuring: Lucy Barr, Kathryn Rasanayagam, Isabelle Baines, Abigail Young; Sophie Ansell and Lily Hadfield. Assistant Principal, Andrea John, said: “I’m particularly impressed with how these students managed to balance a demanding college life, part time work and the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. Inspiring stuff!” Students at Collyer’s can complete their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award as part of the enrichment activities that are offered to all students. Collyer’s programme supports participants through the 5 sections of the award: Physical, Service, Skills, Residential, and the Expedition. Collyer’s Deputy Principal, Steve Martell, was delighted: “Well done to everyone involved this year! These are exceptional students and we are incredibly proud of their success. They are a credit to Collyer’s and the region’s young people. “Massive thanks also to our very own James Gordon, Dr Rob Hussey, and Melanie Kavanagh, for continuing Collyer’s first class participation in the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards. They have been absolutely wonderful, and I know the students are massively appreciative of the time and support they have given the programme this year.”

RSPCA and Nature Reserve saddened by bird trapping

Nature Martin Read - Sports Reporter The RSPCA are seeking information after birds were found dead, stuck on traps affixed to bird feeders and nearby vegetation at the Warnham Nature Reserve. Unknown miscreants had used sticky bird lime to randomly capture birds unfortunate enough to land on the vexatious substance. Horsham resident Hugh Waller was at the reserve when the discovery was made, telling the District Post: “The Warnham Nature Reserve is a lovely relaxing place, very enjoyable to walk round at my own pace and, like my wife, Sue, I’m a frequent visitor – we really enjoy observing the abundant bird and wild

life here. So, I was shocked to see a trappers’ stick hanging from a feeder with a blue tit adhered to it and there were other glue sticks suspended nearby. As I was continuing to go round, I asked some people who were leaving to report the problem to a warden on their way out. By the time I’d completed my walk, about 40 minutes later, there was a group of wardens picking up dead and distressed birds. It is shocking to think this could happen at such an idyllic spot. I had seen a small group of men in the vicinity without binoculars or camera, which is unusual.” The RSPCA were alerted by rangers from Horsham District Council and said: “We are working closely with the council to investigate

C

this incident and are appealing to anyone who may have information to contact the RSPCA in confidence on 0300 123 8018. Three men have been seen in the area acting suspiciously, two are described as around 30 years old, six foot tall with short hair shaved at the sides and long on top. A third man appeared to be older, but not as tall, and was wearing a cap. If anyone sees the three men described acting suspiciously again then we would urge them to contact the police first and then ourselves.” Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act it is illegal to trap – or attempt to trap – wild birds and anyone convicted of so doing can be sentenced to up to six months in prison and given a substantial fine, the RSPCA continuing: “Using this method of trapping causes great suffering to the birds and indiscriminately ensnares anything coming into contact with the glue, and birds have already died in the traps at the reserve.” Some other affected birds were removed by wardens for cleaning and it is hoped that it will be possible to successfully rehabilitate them for later release. Meanwhile, the possibility of installing CCTV cameras at the reserve is believed to be under consideration. Trapping and stealing birds is a worldwide problem, incidents have been observed in New York parks, and in parts of Europe there is a tradition of birds being hunted, shot, trapped and poached. Some aviarists are prepared to pay considerable sums for small wild birds.

Horsham and Crawley Samaritans were delighted to welcome their Patron, Dame Julie Walters to the branch centre in Denne Road Horsham last month. Local resident, Julie Walters, is a big supporter of the Samari-

tans and spent over an hour in the branch, with two listening volunteers, Kevin Hawkes and Jacqui Clark. She asked a lot of questions about the types of calls received, the training and support the Samaritans get, and also offered her continued support

into the future. Dame Julie commented: “It is vitally important that people have a safe place to talk, any time they like, in their own way about whatever’s getting to them. When people feel listened to, it can really save a life.” During her visit, Julie congratulated Kevin Hawkes on his recent appointment as Horsham and Crawley Branch Director. Kevin takes over this voluntary role from existing Director Roger Dugdale and will take on the new responsibilities following the October Annual General Meeting, which Julie Walters said she will be happy to attend. Kevin said: “I am looking forward to taking on this role and building on the existing links with the local communities in both towns. Our current volunteer numbers are around the 100 mark, but we need even more volunteers, in order to be able to open our doors more and be available 24 hours a day every day of the week. “As we are self-financing, another aim is to attract new funding to secure the future of our Branch in Horsham.”

Horsham man appeals for help to take to the skies

As a recent graduate of CAE Oxford Aviation Academy, Horsham resident, Zach Broome, was thrilled to be accepted to the academy’s ‘Integrated ATPL (Air Transport Pilots License)’ course, which (upon successful completion) would see him realise his long term dream of piloting for a commercial airline. Many a young man has dreamed of such a thing, but fewer and fewer are able to achieve this, owing to the huge financial costs involved. It costs a staggering £90,000 to complete the Air Transport Pilots License course, which Zach, and his family are struggling to generate. The 21 year old is now hoping to raise awareness of the difficulties for tomorrow’s pilots, by telling his story in an open letter. Zach explained: “This is a first hand example of why this industry is struggling for pilots, in the rapidly growing high demand for pilots, each year, to cover the cheap holidays being sold by travel companies. “How can airlines fulfil their pilot needs if the ‘ordinary’ people, who have a huge passion for aviation and would make great pilots, can’t afford the training?” Here, Zach directly addresses the public: Dear Sir / Madame My name is Zach Broome, I am 21 years old from the town of Horsham in West Sussex, UK. I have recently just passed my exams at CAE Oxford Aviation Academy which now qualifies me to train for my full ATPL course & pursue my dream career of becoming a commercial pilot. At this stage, I am unable to commence my training further until I have the full required funding. (£90,000) I am a highly motivated young aspiring pilot who wants to work with one of Europe’s leading airlines. I believe I have a great proposition that will be of great interest

in a ‘new-era’ where the demand for pilots is at an all-time high. I am looking for a Full ATPL (Paid Back) Sponsorship from an investor, which would enable me to obtain my pilots licence and begin my training through CAE Oxford. Upon completion of training, I would begin my long-term

committed career with a choice of joining.. UK Airlines : easyJet, Ryanair, TUI or British Airways. 6 KEY BENEFITS OF SPONSORING MY ATPL COURSE: An immediate return of £500 per month paid back for the duration of training (18 months) and then increased on job placement. (£2k+) A fantastic opportunity to sponsor within the local community of Horsham and a great help story for good press. An official contracted commitment which means a secure investment over a minimum set period of time. An enthusiastic young pilot who is ready to fly with high motivation. A full return of sponsorship investment paid back through my salary over an agreed time. A future captain who would set an example to others and inspire the great values of aviation philosophy. Thank you for taking the time to read my story today, I am motivated to move to the next stage and I look forward to hearing from you soon. Kindest Regards, Zach Broome If you would like to support Zach, please call: +44 (0) 7472737399 or email: albionzb@ yahoo.co.uk

Twelve years of ‘Jeans for Genes’ at Farlington The Farlington School Senior School recently took part in ‘Jeans for Genes’ day. The event, organised by Genetic Disorders UK, raises money to give care and support for children and families who are affected by a genetic disorder. The school has supported the annual event for the last 12 years. The students paid a small contribution to wear jeans instead of their school uniform. The money raised on ‘Jeans for Genes’ day supports very

small charities, helps them raise awareness and provides vital services for families living with rare conditions. This year, Farlington is hoping to exceed last year’s fundraising total. Claudine Maude, Farlington’s Charities Co-ordinator, said: “The girls always enjoy wearing jeans to school and supporting this worthwhile charity. At Farlington, we feel it is important that students are encouraged to work with charities and to do something for the wider community.”

Horsham District Jobs and Skills Fair a huge success

The 2018 Horsham District Jobs and Skills Fair was, once again, a storming success, as hundreds of jobseekers made their way to the Drill Hall, Denne Road, Horsham on 19 September to search out new work and training opportunities. Organised by Horsham District Council and sponsored by the Federation of Small Businesses, the fourth annual Jobs and Skills event was a platform for some 43 employers, training and college organisations, as well as voluntary groups and charities from the local area, to attract new employees, apprentices and volunteers. In all, over 500 opportunities were available on the day and over 400 visitors took advantage of the

wide range of sectors and vacancies on show. There were also free employability workshops provided by the National Careers Service, supporting CV preparation, Interview technique, and advice about digital applications and social media. The exhibiting employers reported that they were expecting to recruit nearly 100 people, as a direct result of the event. No doubt more vacancies will be filled in the coming days and weeks. Horsham’s MP, Jeremy Quin, once again paid a visit during his packed schedule. Always keen to support such positive events for the District, Mr Quin was particularly impressed with the range of employers present, with some big hitters amongst the large exhibi-

tor list, including Metricell, Chess Dynamics, Assurity Consulting, and Stoba UK. There was also a significant presence from the hospitality industry, with Cisswood House Hotel, Beefeater, Bill’s and Smith and Western recruiting. In uniform were the ever-present and popular British Army, and UK Border Force complete with a sniffer dog. Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for the Local Economy, Cllr Gordon Lindsay, was also a keen attendee: “I was very impressed with the selection of employers attending and happy to see some major recruiters from the Horsham District supporting this event. The availability of jobs shows that many of our local companies are thriving in difficult economic conditions, and recruiting for growth, which is a good sign”. In March 2019, Horsham District Council and West Sussex County Council will, once again, be holding the very successful and popular Apprenticeship Fair in the Drill Hall and a date will be announced shortly. These Sons of Pitches are coming to The Hawth The multi-award-winning British vocal group, Sons of Pitches, come to The Hawth with their brand new show: ‘100 Number One Hits’. Expect fast-paced medleys and mind-bending mashups as The Sons of Pitches attempt to hit their target of 100 legendary tracks in just one evening. From Michael Jackson to The Beatles, ABBA to Eminem, the show caters to audiences of all ages and is not to be missed. With over three million YouTube hits and a growing international reputation, it’s fair to say that ‘The Sons’ have “given a cappella a kick up the backside”. Since their formation in 2010, the Sons of Pitches, which is made up of Joe Novelli, Joe Hinds, Jamie Hughes, Joe Belham, Josh Mallett and Midé Naike, have established themselves as one of the premiere vocal groups currently working in the UK. The Sons of Pitches shot to fame in November 2015, when they were crowned winners of the BBC2 singing contest The Naked Choir, hosted by Gareth Malone, as their combination of soaring solos, impeccable harmonies and stunning beatboxing - mixed with a large

dose of comedy – captivated the viewing public’s imagination. With a programme of inventive pop covers, original numbers and entertaining improvised songs, the Sons of Pitches have performed at both public and private engagements, with previous clients including Microsoft, Sky, ASOS, Nokia and the NFL, and headline performances on The London Eye, Hampton Court, the NEC Birmingham, Vale Fest, Greenwich Festival and international events in Hong Kong, Austria, Spain and the USA, together with a sell-out debut run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In addition, ‘The Sons’ completed three hugely successful headline UK tours throughout 2016 and 2017, performing 72 shows to over 60,000 fans. Most recently, the

Sons of Pitches starred as the house band on Sky1’s TV entertainment series Sing: Ultimate A Cappella, presented by Cat Deeley, who posted a picture of her with the band with the caption “My favourite guys in the whole wide world.” Looking ahead to their ‘100 Number One Hits’ tour, the Sons of Pitches said: “100 Number One Hits is going to be our biggest, best and most ambitious show yet. We wanted to create a spectacle that would pay homage to some legendary artists while blowing away anyone who came to see it. “Expect all kinds of genres, a bit of comedy and the odd tear jerker. We’ll be singing iconic songs from start to finish as well as juggling numerous hits in massive medleys. The audience will have to keep an eye on the counter clock to see how many we’ve got left to sing. Come along and count the hits!” Performance: Wednesday 3 October 8pm, The Hawth Crawley. Tickets: £27.50 (VIP Tickets: £33.50), available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 and online: www.hawth. co.uk.

Helping you to buy at Abingworth Meadows

The government’s Help to Buy equity loan scheme is open to everyone, whether you’re a first time buyer or looking to move your main residence whether downsizing or upsizing, provided your newly built home is less than £600,000. Now the hugely popular scheme is available at Abingworth Meadows in Thakeham, where award winning housebuilder Oakford Homes is creating homes for 21st century living by providing a selection of 2, 3, 4 and 5 bedroom homes with prices from £419,950.

This weekend, Saturday 29 September, a brand-new show home will be unveiled. The Betony house design features three bedrooms, including a master bedroom with wardrobes and an ensuite shower room, and the generously sized living room spans the full width of the rear of the house with doors leading out to the garden. Prices for The Betony house designs start from just £419,950. Also falling within the Help to Buy criteria are the four bedroom detached homes in The Woodsage

design which are now available from £539,950. The homes have been designed with family living in mind, with an open plan kitchen/dining room leading on to the garden and the 23 ft living/ family room also opening onto the garden. This house makes for perfectly practical day-to-day living as well as providing great entertaining space all year round. “As you’d expect, Help to Buy does come with a few caveats but there’s nothing too tricky and there will be a Financial Adviser

at the launch to help guide you,” explains Lesley McKay, sales adviser at Abingworth Meadows. “For example, you can’t sublet a home bought with Help to Buy and it has to be your only property but for most of us that’s the case anyway. The process itself is pretty straightforward too and we’ll help guide our buyers through the purchase which doesn’t take any longer as the Help to Buy systems are so well set up to run alongside a mortgage application.” Help to Buy equity loans are available for up to 20% of the cost of your new home, which adds to your 5% deposit and 75% mortgage to complete the financial purchase. There are no loan fees charged on the Help to Buy loan for the first five years of owning your home, making budgeting easier as you move in. For more information on how Help to Buy equity loans may be able to help make your move to Abingworth Meadows easier and quicker, contact Lesley, Ruth and Fred at the sales and marketing suite or visit oakfordhomes. co.uk. Abingworth Meadows is a collection of highly specified 2, 3, 4 and 5 bedroom homes in a picturesque setting surrounded by countryside. Also at Abingworth Meadows will be new football pitches, a cricket pitch and pavilion and a new village hall. The new 3 bedroom show home opens at Abingworth Meadows on Saturday 29 September at 10am and for more details in the meantime, get in touch with the sales and marketing team on 01798 813071.

Horsham’s Nick Oxley 12th man for England ! Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Nick Oxley, the 19 year old Horsham all rounder, was thrilled to be called into the England set up to bowl at our batsmen in the nets at Lord’s as part of their preparation for the Test match against India. Nick was chosen because he bowls left arm Chinamen deliveries like India’s Kuleep Yadav. And, Nick was also involved at the Oval, where he got onto the field wearing an England sweater as 12th man, telling the District Post: “I received a phone call from Coach Steve Kirby (the former county fast bowler) – it was a nerve-wracking, experience to be in with the players that I’d grown up watching so often on TV, but awesome, too! I was made to feel welcome, and it helped that Fynn HudsonPrentice was there as well, because I’ve trained with him at Sussex and played a few games with him so we know each other. Also, I knew Sam Curran and Ollie Pope through age group cricket and Lord’s was Ollie’s Test debut, so it was good to share that with him.” Nick has been a regular member of Sussex 2nd XI this season and has also been playing for the MCC Young Cricketers’ side, based at Lord’s. He continued: “It was fantastic at the Oval – Alastair Cook’s final Test, bowing out with another century and Jimmy Anderson becoming the leading Test wicket taker by a fast bowler – cricket history was made by two of my heroes that I’d only seen on television - and,

of course we won! It was a very happy dressing room and great to be able to chat to the players and have a beer with them after the game – they were in such good spirits.” Horsham supporters are well aware of Nick Oxley’s all round talents, and have witnessed his outstanding fielding, too, so what lies ahead for him? “I’m just sorting out my visa for Australia – I leave on October 1st to play cricket in Melbourne and it’ll be excellent to get onto some different pitches and learn some new skills. Hopefully that will stand me in good stead when I return, I’ve set my heart on progressing as far as possible with the MCC YC’s and Sussex. If I work hard and all goes well then I’d love to forge a long, successful professional career in the game.” Meanwhile, plucky Horsham leg spinner Will Beer – who celebrates his 30th birthday on October 8th - has won Sussex’s Team Man of the Year award. Although Will’s first team opportunities have been limited he has never let the team down with either bat or ball, notably in Sussex’s Vitality Blast T20 campaign, whenever called upon, since making his debut in 2008. Sussex praised Will for always putting the needs of the team above everything else. In an injury-interrupted season and he was commended for his demeanour around the dressing room, his unfailing willingness to help his teammates with their preparation and for consistently going above and beyond what has been expected of him.

Calling all runners for Barns Green Half Marathon & 10K race!

Running Martin Read - Sports Reporter The Barns Green Half Marathon is coming up! This year’s event – the 36th - is on Sunday September 30 – with a 10am start. It takes place along closed roads across beautiful undulating countryside and passes through Christ’s Hospital School with the great spectacle of the magnificent school marching band enlivening and encouraging participants. And, the huge community run - with well over 1000 runners and support from the whole vil-

lage – will again feature a 10K race, setting off at 10.20am, also going through the school grounds, with the last km to the tape down hill. This year’s starter will be Simon Reid, Christ’s Hospital Headmaster and over 100 people from local clubs and societies will be helping with the preparations, and beavering away on the day. Every runner receives a goody bag and a medal with prize money of £250 for both male and female winners and additional awards for places, the best team, record breakers and the always entertaining fancy dress competition – sponsored by

ChilliPepperTV – fun runners have competed as Batman, skeletons, witches, wizards, babies - a Harry Hill lookalike previously winning first prize. Barns Green Half Marathon Chairman Vernon Jennings says: “The fantastic costumes that people create to run, both in the Half Marathon and the 10K race add greatly to the colour and excitement of the day – we want to see as many people as possible in fancy dress, its great fun!” Vernon Jennings continues: “It is wonderful to have Dark Star Brewing – from nearby Partridge Green – sponsoring both the Half Marathon and 10K race. We are extremely proud of what we have been able to achieve since the first Half Marathon in 1982 – each year the event gets bigger with more runners and spectators! Our charity is once again St Catherine’s Hospice, and because of Dark Star’s involvement, we will be able to allocate even more funds to St Catherine’s – and to the various local and junior organisations, societies and clubs that help us organise the event on the day.” St Catherine’s Hospice do great work, being dedicated to providing specialised end of life care and support to local people, their families, friends and carers. There will be food stalls, five bands on the course and three on the green, pre race musical warm ups by two of Bluecoat Sports’ fitness instructors for all the runners, a fun fair, ice creams, all guaranteeing a cracking atmosphere for the entire family. Participants and spectators are advised to arrive early! For more information on the always well organised event – including the online booking facility - see http://www.barnsgreen-half. org.uk and be sure to pick up a copy of the District Post October 5th edition, which will showcase both runs with full results and stunning photographs. Heath edged out of FA Vase by single goal Saturday September 15 – Buildbase FA Vase – 2nd Qualifying Round East Preston 1 0 Broadbridge Heath Football Andy Crisp & Martin Read - Sports Reporter

Scan me!

Heath bowed out of the Buildbase FA Vase with a narrow 1-0 defeat to fellow Southern Combination Football League Premier Division side East Preston at The Lashmar last Saturday. In an evenly contested match the home-side, kicking down the slope, created the first chance when Luke Brodie cut in from the left and curled a right foot shot, comfortably saved by Heath keeper Kieron Thorp. But, the best opportunity of the half came on 22 minutes when Bears’ skipper Tom Bold beat

two defenders in the penalty area, took the ball to the goal-line and chipped it to the far post where an unmarked Marlon Maxwell came in to head the ball down but wide of the post when it looked easier to score. Action then switched to the other end and the ball was played to Brodie in the penalty area, who flicked out a right foot to direct it towards goal, Thorp reacting quickly to save, the score remaining goal-less at the break. Heath started the second half with a flurry, Shaun Findlay forcing East Preston keeper Jack Collins into a full length diving save and minutes later Lee Carney was just inches wide with a right foot shot from 20 yards. Bold then tried his luck from close range but it flew high over the crossbar. Then, midway through the half, Bold hit a deep free kick into the East Preston area where Maxwell rose above every-

one to power a header goal-wards, only for Collins’ finger-tip save to push it over the bar. However, East Preston gradually worked their way back into the game with Thorp being forced to make a save from Ryan Quirke. Lewis Jenkins got on the end of a corner to head off target before Thorp was again needed to save another Quirke shot. The winning goal was scored on 79 minutes when an East Preston attack broke down and Bold came out of defence with the ball at his feet, aiming to play it to Scott Weller, but the pass was intercepted and put out wide to the right, for a low cross to be delivered to Nathan Da Costa. He struck it first time, Thorp parrying it onto the post where Alfie Jones was on hand to complete the all important, but somewhat fortunate deciding goal.

Exciting FA Cup win carries Horsham through to Round 3

Photos by John Lines

Saturday September 22 – FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round Horsham 4 3 Heybridge Swifts Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham showed great tenacity and spirit in this pulsating

cup tie, three times the visitors were in the lead, but the Hornets kept fighting back, eventually pulling off an excellent win to take them through to the third qualifying round of the FA Cup. The game was played in driving rain but the two sides still man-

aged to treat spectators to a pulsating seven goal thriller, Swifts opening the scoring in the sixth minute when George Craddock’s shot was deflected past Horsham keeper Josh Pelling. And, it soon got worse for the Hornets when an un-marked corner allowed Alejandro Seoane-Barber to get the ball in the net. Horsham, though, reduced the deficit when Steve Metcalfe headed over Danny Sambridge in the Swifts goal, before Joe Shelley converted a corner to level the score at 2-2, triggering further Horsham chances. Resuming after the break, Horsham continued pressing but the Essex visitors kept them at bay, until after a quarter of an hour, Nick Brown’s long range volley changed direction off a defender into the goal, putting the Swifts in front again. But, within six minutes parity was restored, Rob O’Toole making it three goals apiece from close quarters. With both sides seeking victory, a golden opportunity came and went when Horsham fired over the bar, but Chris Smith promptly slotted in the decider with just six minutes of full time remaining. The jittery last few minutes produced drama at either end, culminating in a last ditch corner for the Swifts, but Horsham held on, earning a £9,000 pay off and a home tie – at Lancing – against Poole Town of the Southern League Premier Division on Saturday October 6th. The Bostik League fixture at Ramsgate on that date will be re-scheduled. Meanwhile, after a mid week league game versus Hastings at Lancing, on Saturday Horsham travel to Suffolk for an FA Trophy Preliminary Round tie against Bury Town.

YMCA go top with big home win Saturday September 22 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Horsham YMCA 4 1 Peacehaven & Telscombe Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter A strong second half performance sent Horsham YMCA to the top of the table with an ultimately crushing win against young and athletic Peacehaven & Telscombe at rain-lashed Gorings Mead last Saturday. Yet, the visitors scored first – in the 11th minute – when Jake Legrange broke through on the left and unleashed a cross cum shot that dipped over Aaron Jeal’s head into the far top corner of the goal. In subsequent fast and furious passages of play serial action followed at both ends, including a YM corner, forays from Tony Nwachukwu and the respective keepers making telling saves. But, as the half wore on YM asserted their authority, piling pressure onto the Haven

defence, with an equaliser looking inevitable, and after Tony Garrod had tested Alieu Secka in the visitors’ goal, the ball came across to the unmarked Dean Bown for him to level the scores from close range. Two YM corners and a free kick followed, the game getting physical - resembling a frantic cup tie – but, the score remained 1-1 at the break. The second half began with two Peacehaven corners, one resulting from a finger tip save by Jeal. YM, though, safely negotiated these attacks, until, after nine minutes, Garrod got the ball out to Bown, who made no mistake, giving YM the lead, heralding the opening of the flood gates. Three minutes later a goal came from nowhere when Nwachukwu blasted in, before, in the 60th minute a rebound came out to Ashley Dugdale for him to put YM 4-1 in front, the game changing dramatically despite Secka having had performing well, but being left powerless after YM had repeatedly crashed through the defence. Corners at either end

captured spectators’ attention as Garrod skimmed the bar, and, to their great credit, Peacehaven kept trying to pull back a goal right to the end. Top marks to both teams for producing good football despite the appalling conditions, but, deservedly it was YM’s day, Manager Peter Buckland telling the District Post: “I really rate Peacehaven – they’re a spirited, quick side. We woke up mid way through the first half and then after we’d got those three quick goals it was a case of game management.” In YMCA’s two previous league encounters, they beat Lingfield 3-2 on East Grinstead’s ground, thanks to two goals from Dean Bown and another from Alex Barbary, then, at Crawley Down Gatwick, YM won 3-0, Barbary, Ollie Moore and, returning from injury, Dave Brown, scoring. Following a mid-week trip to Saltdean, on Saturday YM travel to Eastbourne United, bottom and win-less in their after eight games up to last Saturday.

Development of Horsham’s new ground gathering pace! Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Accelerating progress is being made at Horsham’s new football ground. The 3G ‘carpet’ is in place on the community/training pitch, the main pitch has been levelled and the tarmac base has been laid, fencing posts and floodlights are in place, along with a visible footprint of where the 307 seater main stand will soon be built. Horsham company Direct Security Partnership have been appointed to manage security, BEL Signs have been contracted to handle all signage matters – as they did at the old Queen Street ground – and, crucially,

The clubhouse contract was the final piece of the jigsaw that will see the Hornets into their new home a contract has been signed for the construction of the new clubhouse. The Club has issued the following statement: “We are extremely pleased to announce that after lengthy and detailed discussions, we have signed a contract with Reside Construction to build our new clubhouse facility. The building will comprise a dividable function suite with bar, Sky TV, a professional kitchen, state of the art dressing room facilities for home and away teams and officials, together with a reception, club office and a small retail unit for sales of club merchandise. Reside Construction is a major building firm, highly experienced in building commercial developments throughout the South of England”. Horsham CEO John Lines said: “The clubhouse contract was the final piece of the jigsaw that will see the Hornets into their new home,

and I am delighted to report that groundwork will begin as early as next week. The site has seen a remarkable transformation from a derelict overgrown field and the main grandstand should be arriving on site within the next two weeks. We are hopeful of being able to provide the community pitch for use by the Club’s junior teams and first team training before the end of the year.” John Lines continued: “Much as we would like to play our first team matches at Hop Oast before the end of the current season, in reality, and with the uncertainty of winter weather, we expect completion to be in May 2019. It is disappointing not to be open for business in 2018/19, but far better for everyone to have the ground 100% ready and give us the time to plan a spectacular opening with a high profile top club as opposition for the first game. It will also give us time to prepare a programme for use of the facility by other local and community clubs, as well as hiring to the general public. We have received enquiries from a substantial number of clubs, individuals and community-based schemes about using the facility. We also want to develop further our own Youth set-up to encourage more local boys and girls to become involved with the Club. Another area the Club is keen on developing, is a Sixth Form Football Academy. We are in discussions with a prominent University which has a fantastic track record in combining academic achievement with sporting ability, and we hope to have more news on that shortly.” Horsham Chairman, Kevin Borrett added: “These are extremely exciting times for the club and those who have supported us in our 10-year journey to our new home. We will be giving our supporters, and the public, exactly what they want, expect and deserve. We have waited a long time, so I ask our friends and supporters to be patient, and you will have the finest non-league facility around.”

Backed by sound catching – especially an awkward low grab by Max Rivers, Barnard wrenched the heart out of Hastings’ middle order with 5-30, including two wickets off consecutive balls, before George Fleming nipped in with

Mini Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Rugby Club is ending their season on a high – the 1st XV has just won the Sussex Cup again, the U18s are through to the Semi Final of the National Cup and there is very keen interest and involvement at even more junior level – as witnessed by the enthusiastic participation of U9 and U11 squads and their supporters on the recently completed tour to the Isle of Wight. The Wildcats – the U9s – and the Topcats, the U11s, thoroughly enjoyed their highly successful trip to the Vectis Rugby Festival at Seaclose Park, Newport. Both teams relished their new livery of shirts from Thakeham Homes and hoodies from Horsham’s Coot public house, the unbeaten Wildcats celebrating with eight

wins and a draw, while the Topcats were equally impressive with six wins, a draw and just one loss. Four energetic Horsham teams participated at the event supported by Newport’s long standing Earl Mountbatten Hospice with funds generated for food and refreshment sales raised for the host club. A huge party travelled from Horsham – 54 players, 30 siblings, 71 adults accompanied by a healthy contingent of dogs, necessitating outstanding organisation to co-ordinate the movements of the entire party. And, there was more to it than just rugby – the children also revelled in watersport and team bonding activities, including raft building, water confidence training, sailing and kayaking all day on Saturday, followed by a glorious day of free scor-

ing - and fierce tackling rugby on the Sunday. This was the happy culmination of a very successful season, establishing two fine junior rugby teams and, particularly importantly, forming strong bonds among players and parents alike. On return the family fun day at the Rugby Club was also greatly enjoyed, Chris Dodd saying: “Huge credit goes to all of the team coaches, managers and, especially, to the Tour Co-ordinator Tonya Fitzpatrick. Training re-starts in August ahead of the new season beginning in September – if any parent thinks that their child might like to get involved then visit the club website and send an e mail to Horsham Rugby Club’s Mini and Junior Chairman Jonathan Pratt at www.horshamrufc.com/contact/. Meanwhile, here’s to many successful seasons (and tours) to come!”

66 teams competed in the Horsham District Youth League mixed mini soccer tournament – 31 teams in the Under 9s age group and 35 in the Under 10s, with, as in the Champions League, a group stage and the winners and runners up progressing into a knock out cup and the third and fourth placed teams going into the plate competition. Each match involved two games, ensuring that the whole squad had the opportunity to feature in competitive matches. The Finals were held at Ashington Cougars FC and after East Grinstead had won the U9 Cup, Broadbridge Heath Bears played Horsham Tigers in the closely contested Plate. There was little to choose between the two sides until Heath scored the winning goal in the last five minutes, clinching a 4-3 win.

At Horsham on Sunday Cuckfield elected to bat. They got off to a flier with 28 off their first three overs, but when Tom Haines (2-21) bowled Aussie Big Bash’s Sam Whiteman, Cuckfield decelerated. Whiteman can be devastatingly destructive but is currently suffering from a loss of form in the Sussex Premier League, followed by another low score against Horsham’s Thursday XI last week. Although Cuckfield reached 82-2, progress was contained and once Nick Oxley had dismissed Bradley Gayler for 46 the innings declined with a run out and two wickets for Joe Ashmore, who finished with 2-15 off his four over allocation. On a customary good Horsham wicket a target of 132 was inviting, especially as Craig Gallagher is in a rich vein of runs and, with

Thornely, and MCC young cricketer Nick Oxley, Horsham have an enviably strong T20 batting line up, possibly to be further boosted by the county’s Will Beer. For Cuckfield, much depended on Sussex’s Abi Sakande, but he went wicketless at eight runs an over and although Haines departed for a golden duck that mattered not as Horsham were steaming along at 10 an over. Although the pace slackened a little, from 99-2 off 12 overs they cruised home with 17 balls to spare. Clark made 33 and Thornely an unbeaten 27, but Craig Gallagher stole the show again, rounding off his excellent weekend with a typically belligerent 66 from 41 balls, featuring 10 trademark fours. Horsham skipper Thornely told the District Post: “Getting Whiteman out early was the key, then we restricted them well and got through our overs quickly. It was

National Legends Motor Racing Martin Read - Sports Reporter

Faygate racing driver John Mickel has set off in fast pursuit of his fourth consecutive UK National Legends Championship title in his trade mark dashing orange-coloured 1934 Ford replica Bonnie & Clyde style car (Number 4) sponsored by K-Seal. At the end of March in the first weekend of racing at Cheshire’s Oulton Park, snow, gloomy skies and a slippery cold and wet track impeded racing throughout the first day, with drivers forced to wipe snow from their visors in the low visibility. Demonstrating his legendary race craft all through the day, Mickel hit the front of the pack in every race, but the wet conditions favoured other

drivers’ set ups. Despite a red flag stoppage following a roll on the first corner in Race 1, John still managed to clinch 2nd spot. He drove hard to finish 5th in Race 2, which included two yellow flag stoppages. And, despite starting from 22nd position on the grid, he surged through to finish 6th in the Final with just 1.8 seconds separating the top nine drivers at the finish. The tightly competitive Oulton results placed John 4th in the Championship at the end of Round 1 – a good, solid start with 8 weekends, 16 races and 48 races to come – with 200 points on offer for each race. For Round 2 the action moved to North Yorkshire’s Croft track, where, in sparkling conditions, after the opening heat on Saturday morning Mickel was unde-

by Billingshurst v Roffey after Horsham kindly agreed to host the match because conditions at Billingshurst’s Jubilee Fields had not recovered sufficiently from the deluges earlier in April. Horsham’s game has been rearranged for this Sunday – at home. A replacement date for the Billingshurst v Roffey fixture is awaited. Meanwhile, this Saturday sees the opening matches in this season’s Sussex Premier League – Horsham will travel to reigning champions East Grinstead, while last year’s runners up Roffey go to Middleton. Both matches start at 12 noon and will be contested on a 50 over per side basis. Horsham’s first home match will be on the following Saturday, May 12th, when they entertain their old sparring partners Preston Nomads. Due to a most unfortunate clash in the fixture schedule, Roffey’s first game at their Crawley Road ground will be on the same day – against East Grinstead. Full match reports on Horsham and Roffey’s 1st XI league and cup matches will be published in your District Post week by week throughout the season.

Sussex Cup were postponed last Saturday after heavy overnight rain had left the bowlers’ run ups and parts of the outfield unplayable - although the wicket itself was hard and dry under the covers. Horsham had been due to play Haywards Heath at 1pm followed

Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Broadbridge Heath finished the season on a low note, being undone by three goals in quick succession mid way through the first half as they recorded their second consecutive defeat and their eighth loss from their last 10 outings. But, Heath dominated possession for the first 20 minutes, forcing the Uckfield defence and keeper Jake Roberts to make a series of important clearances. Uckfield, though, withstood the challenge – Roberts thwarted a Gicu Iordache shot with his leg, resulting in an unfulfilled Heath corner before the keeper kept out a highly promising shot from George Cousins. Heath looked likely to score, until, in the 21st minute, an Uckfield free kick

penetrated the Heath defence for Trevor McCreadie to head into the top right corner of the goal. Almost immediately, McCreadie found the net again at close quarters when he latched onto a Bailo Camara cross. And, it promptly got worse when an Uckfield corner gave Matt McClean the opportunity to benefit from a deflection. Rampant Uckfield had two further chances but Conor Evento in the Heath goal safely gathered a McCreadie strike before McLean’s shot was again deflected, but this time over the bar. Turning round with a three nil deficit was too much for unthreatening Heath as Uckfield tookFriday control, 3 August 2018 Camara posing regular problems. Horsham Football Club appoint new Commercial Director Football Martin Read - Sports Reporte

Paul Osborn has been appointed Commercial Director of Horsham Football Club, in succession to Andy Thompson. After thanking Andy for his contribution, the club’s CEO John Lines told the District Post: “I’m really pleased, Paul has good business acumen and a proven track record and he’s already done a great job on our committee raising commercial income for the club. He took the lead role in co-ordinating the club’s highly successful Christmas draw, raising over £1,000 each for Horsham Football Club and Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice. The board recognises that we have a real opportunity to significantly increase the club’s commercial profile and income, and Paul will head that up at board level.” And, Paul told us: “I’ve been a long term sup-

Throughout my working life I’ve focussed on helping businesses of all sizes to improve their performance and as Commercial Director I plan to work with the many national and local companies and organisations, who I believe will want to be part of us becoming a genuine community club of which Horsham can be proud. For the first time in ten years the club will be able to enjoy the security of owning its own prestigious ground, and if we can develop the commercial side of our activities by working closely with supporters, advertisers and sponsors we will be able to add the icing on the security cake. have been completed there will be a connection to National Cycle Route 228 along Kilnwood Lane to Horsham and Crawley and it will no longer be necessary to wait for the proposed cycle routes within the Kilnwood Vale development to be completed (which could take anything up to ten years – just to cycle to the nearest town).” As the initial houses at Kilnwood Vale began to be occupied residents were unhappy about the lack of cycle provision and approached HDCF to see if anything could be done, so HDCF contacted West Sussex County Council, Peter Silburn saying: “We are indebted to Sue du Chemin of the West Sussex Public Rights of Way team for making the necessary improvements happen.” The resurfacing is scheduled for this summer and covers the section of bridleway from the Bewbush exit up to the playground. The new cycle path will be similar to that used on the Worth Way – up to 2m in width with a large stone base for drainage and a finer top layer. The vegetation will be cut right back to the ditch and the barriers removed, permitting permanent usage throughout the year. HDCF recommends www.cyclestreets.net as a journey planning tool. And, the group welcomes new members – HDCF next meetings will be on the first Tuesdays of June, August and October (AGM) at 7.30 in the Bodium Room, County Hall North, WSCC, Parkside, Horsham info@hdcf.org.uk – 01403 258830 – twitter@CycleForumHorsh

McCreath from Eastbourne was the fastest lady in 42.19, but the race is open to and enjoyed by runners of all abilities. Online entries can be made by following the link on www. horshamjoggers.co.uk / horsham-10K/ Geoff Parker summed up by paying tribute to his predecessor Paul Aylett, saying: “Paul was race Director for 5 years and I take this opportunity to thank him for his hard work and for leaving the organisation in great shape. Come and join us for a great family experience, we’ve got additional attractions for children, excellent refreshments – including our legendary cake stall. The races are always well supported and we’re looking forward to another great day at Horsham Rugby Club!”

In the U10 category Faygate United Youth posted a strong challenge, but were eventually overcome by Hassocks Hawks, who won the cup, reprising their performance as U9s last year, when they also lifted the silverware. In the plate trophy Southwater won the first game 2-0, but Billingshurst scored first in the second. However, Southwater were determined not to be beaten and after scoring the next goal they went on to win 4-1 overall. Horsham District Youth Football League Mini Soccer Co-ordinator Marc Oratis enthused: “Despite the weather causing postponements in the early rounds we managed to complete the finals and again it was a fantastic advert for youth football and the standard was excellent. All participants played in the right spirit and can hold their heads up high – well done to all of the boys and girls who took part.”

Horsham District Cycle Forum (HDCF) comprises a group of people who live or work in the Horsham area with the objective of making cycling a safe, convenient and attractive transport option for those of all ages and abilities. A major interest of the group is to press for separate, safe cycling facilities to be installed in new housing developments to ensure that residents can make pleasant journeys by bicycle, enjoying our outstanding countryside. Peter Silburn, Secretary of HDCF, is pleased to report some good news for cyclists – a section of the bridleway to the east of the Kilnwood Vale site, which is currently unusable, is to be resurfaced, allowing safe passage to Horsham Crawley and beyond. This is something that the residents have been seeking in the absence of cycle routes within the site. Peter Silburn explains: “The bridleway along the site’s eastern edge is to be improved with an all-weather surface, enabling all year round cycle access to and from Horsham and Crawley and further afield. Currently a section of the path is so impassable that barriers have been installed to deter people from using it. There has therefore been no viable cycle access to Horsham and Crawley other than by using the high speed dual carriageway, which, unsurprisingly few, if any people, were willing to do. When the improvement works

feated for the remainder of the race meeting with two wins on day one and a clean sweep on the Sunday. Mickel laid down a marker in the qualifier with the fastest time only to be edged out by Steve Whitelegg in the first race. But, in Heat 2 Mickel was at his dominant best and from a lead of 2.7 seconds on the opening lap he opened an advantage of over six seconds by mid race, before cruising to the chequered flag eight seconds clear of the chasers. Saturday’s final was, however, a much closer contest - although Mickel again came out on top to chalk up his second win of the day. On the Sunday at Croft the temperature had dropped with dark clouds bringing rain ahead of qualifying, but, following a hard fought four-way scrap for the lead, Mickel got to the front, holding on until the flag on lap 8. In Heat 2 he surged through in lap four, and was pushed all the way but went on to win by just 0.2 seconds. In Sunday’s Final it was a shootout between Mickel and Whitelegg, John taking the lead on lap seven to win by 0.5 seconds, saying: “The team were kicking ourselves after the first race on Saturday because we felt we should have had that, too. The car seems to be really hooked up around Croft, I like the track and we were getting quicker all weekend, we had the legs. We didn’t have much luck at Oulton, so it was nice to have a good weekend at Croft.” After Croft John Mickel leads the Championship with 2,590 points – 205 ahead of Whitelegg. The next Championship event takes place at the Anglesey Circuit at the end of May.

ing towards the championship trophy. However, this year the format has changed with fewer events included, so we’re delighted that we’ve retained our status. The reduced number of Grand Prix components has, though, created extra competition for places in our race.” The beauty of the course - multi-terrain with two laps, mainly on quiet open roads, including country lanes and a woodland bridleway stretch also adds further interest. There is also a separate traffic free fun run of about 1200 metres, with a 10.15 start, around the rugby pitch for under 16 year olds, Geoff Parker adding: “The U16 fun run is also filling up fast, so enter early to avoid disappointment – it is most unlikely that there will be any

off like a rocket. Statistics don’t always tell the truth, but this time they certainly do – Manenti faced 30 balls, from which he hit 11 fours and 7 sixes (86 runs from 18 deliveries). He finished with an incredible 98 not out, Roffey storming home from a mere 6.4 overs. His opening partner Matt Davies is capable of scoring quickly along with the best, but wisely admired the view from the bowlers end, finishing on 6 not out from 11 balls. The Stirland bowlers will be waking screaming in the night for years to come – no names, but bowler number 1 went for 35 off three overs, number 2 had 22 taken from his 2 overs, number 3 really bore the brunt, his solitary over costing 33, while number four escaped with 15 off his four ball spell. After rueing the fact that he missed out on 5 dot balls Ben Manenti told us: “The team has been playing so well that I’ve been happy not to bat, but it was good to get some time in the middle. This is my third season at Roffey and they’ve been good to me – it’s great to be in such a successful side,” while skipper Matt Davies said: “We’ve had another great weekend – two big wins without losing a single wicket – we’re doing well, but there’s a long way to go, so it’s a case of ‘keep going lads’”. In the Quarter Final on Sunday July 1st Roffey travel to Preston Nomads for a 3.30 start – on the same day East Grinstead play Horsham, Middleton host Eastbourne and Worthing entertain Hastings.

man there was little more than token resistance, Hayward’s 20 not out apart. Barnard finished with 2-33, but the bowling prize went to Man of the Match Manenti, who, once in his stride looked likely to take a wicket with every ball, making the batsmen play, his excellent 8-39 being his best figures for Roffey.
