Innovative Bohunt Academy to open in Horsham’s Hurst Road martin read
Reporter
It has just been announced that the Bohunt Educational Trust (BET) will be opening a new coeducational academy in Horsham for children from age 4 to 18, providing seamless learning from puplis’ first school experience through to university. Initially BET’s Horsham Academy – to be known as Bohunt Horsham - will be located at Arun House in Hurst Road, for Year 7 pupils. The free school will open with 1,600 places for the full range of students when it transfers to its permanent home in the forthcoming major north Horsham development in 2020. BET currently runs top performing state academies in Basingstoke, Petersfield, Portsmouth, Wokingham, Worthing - and Liphook, its administrative HQ. Over 7,000 students are educated in the six academies, including a sixth form, Dr Ray Morton, Chairman of BET Governors, saying:
“We want as many young people as possible to access and benefit from the Trust’s outstanding educational model, and Bohunt Horsham is the latest in a long line of successes.” The Liphook Academy was featured in the BBC documentary series “Are our kids tough enough? Chinese School” when five teachers from China came to educate 50 Bohunt pupils at Liphook. BET’s fee paying branch in Wenzhou, east China will help fund the UK schools, enabling the Trust to expand its programme here. BET ensure that all of its students experience character building outdoor education, regardless of their background, with bursaries for students from poorer families, and are leaders in outdoor ventures with the Duke of Edinburgh scheme and other organisations with a wide range of extra-curricular activities, focusing on science, technology, engineering and maths. Bohunt is a course provider for Mountain Training UK and students have gone on expeditions to Greenland, the Himalayas, Kazakhistan and Mongolia, with Azerbaijan and Sri Lanka also in the itinerary for

high quality education, providing unparalled educational opportunities through highly effective teaching with exceptionally high standards and expectations.” BET sports teams have been successful nationally – the U13 girls’ football side at Bohunt Wokingham were national champions in 2017.

Horsham resident goes the extra mile for mental health

30-year old Ben Pirt from Horsham is supporting the one in four people with a mental health problem by taking part in the Simplyhealth Great South Run on 21 October. Ben is running on behalf of mental health charity, Mind, with the aim of raising awareness of mental health problems and raising muchneeded funds for services. He said: “I feel extremely privileged to work for an organisation that provides medical insurance, as I received fantastic out-patient care when I was struggling with depression and anxiety. “Sadly, there are so many people out there who don’t have access to this kind of treatment, and this is why I felt it was important to support Mind, an organisation that is providing free support for so many people up and down the country.
“The Mind Infoline is a fabulous resource for people who may not have access to a strong support network or who can’t get to their GP. To have somebody there who can listen without judgment, who you can bounce your thoughts and feelings off, can make such as difference. I’d go as far as to say, for people experiencing their darkest days, it can save lives.” Ben, by his own admission, isn’t a natural runner, but he felt that doing something that pushes him beyond his comfort zone would make it all the more worthwhile: “Running is really good for my mental health, as it’s a really mindful form of exercise. It’s not about escaping your thoughts, but creating positive, mindful thoughts – for example the rhythm of your feet pounding the pavements, the rhythm of your breathing and taking in what you see and hear as you run. “I was also especially keen to take part in the Simplyhealth Great South Run, as I went to university in Portsmouth, so it will bring back a lot of great memories as I run through the familiar streets.” Karen Bolton, Head of Community and Events fundraising at Mind, said: “We’re incredibly grateful to Ben for choosing to fundraise for Mind through the Simplyhealth Great South Run. So many of our supporters tell us that running has a positive impact on their mental health, and it’s great to hear that Ben is finding it so beneficial as well.

HAODS is on the move after 30 years
Photos by HAODS members and Chris Dale
Horsham Amateur Operatic & Dramatic Society (HAODS), one of the area’s most respected and well-loved arts companies, is about to lose its home at Broadbridge Heath Leisure centre. The old building is due to close at the end of October and will be demolished soon after, so HAODS has been packing up the thousands of costumes, sets and props that are stored at the site. The
membership has pulled together and it’s been all hands on deck to pack up, transport and re-home HAODS’ wonderful collection. The society were given their own premises in the Leisure Centre in 1988, so that the Tesco Car Park could be built on the site of the old HAODS nissen hut. Over the years, members have rehearsed numerous musicals and plays at their Broadbridge Heath
base, which they then performed at both the old and new Capitol theatres. HAODS Chairman, Tess Kennedy, said: “It was a shock when the Council decided that HAODS would not be given premises in the new Leisure Centre. The HAODS committee have worked tirelessly in protracted negotiations with Horsham Council to secure new premises at the old Ambulance Station in Hurst
Road. We are excited by the move, although our rent has tripled and the long term plan is for the Ambulance station to be demolished. In the short term, the membership has come together to ensure that the premises are fit for purpose and that the move goes smoothly. “HAODS has been entertaining the Horsham public for over 60 years and we have no intention of stopping now”. HAODS is made up of over 100 members of all ages, putting on as near to professional standard shows as you can get in amateur theatre. They have won numerous awards over the years, most recently Best Modern Musical for “Made in Dagenham” (2017). As well as staging musicals and plays, the society also plays a leading role in the local community. Young people from age 7 can join Young HAODS, run by Beth Landskroner. They have weekly sessions, as well as taking leading parts in full scale shows, such as this summer’s hugely successful ‘Wendy and Peter Pan’. Members also perform regularly at local care homes and at large scale events, such as The Loxwood Joust and Horsham’s “Americarna”. The loss of ‘HAODS house’ could have been devastating, but, of course, the show must always go on! The last few months have been incredibly busy for HAODS as the move coincides with rehearsals for their latest produc-
tion, “Follies”. In a strange coincidence of life imitating art, this show is about a reunion of Follies girls who return to New York in 1971 to see their beloved Theatre for one last time before it is demolished. In the most glamorous re-union you will ever see, the Follies beauties get together after 30 years for one last evening; have a few drinks, sing a few songs, tell a few tales and of course, re-unite with lost loves. “Follies” has become one of Sondheim’s most popular shows - partly due to the recent revival at The National Theatre starring Imelda Staunton. Full of sequins, feathers, toe tapping dance numbers and heart stoppingly beautiful music supported by a live orchestra, (HAODS’ performance will include a professional harpist) and a host of colourful characters, it’s easy to see why the show has become a classic. You can join in the fun and support this fabulous local group, when they perform “Follies” at The Capitol from Tuesday 6 – Saturday 10 November. Tickets can be booked on 01403 750220 or at www. thecapitolhorsham.com Further details on Horsham Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society, (HAODS), including how to become a “Friend of HAODS”, can be found at the HAODS website www.haods.co.uk For information on Young HAODS, please email: younghaods@haods.co.uk

Pink Gift Fair and wellbeing event kept busy by steady flow of visitors
From those that wanted to talk tarot card readings to shoulder problems, visitors to Cancer Research UK Pink Gift Fair seemed to be leaving laden down with shopping bags, as they were offered unique shopping with exclusive products that can’t be found on the high street. Some of the retail stalls offering products of natural qualities produced through personal experience of fighting cancer, and (from the Sussex land) the most amazing flapjacks made with linseed oil.
Visitors were offered a chance to chat about wellbeing, healthy eating, yoga, and shop ‘til you had no more hands to hold shopping bags. The pink clad volunteers offered a warm welcome to all who attended the West Sussex Couunty Council offices, including Horsham councillors and local MP, Jeremy Quin. The Audi display of luxury cars featuring the fair’s logo attracted many a visitors outside, whilst younger shoppers loved the ever changing pink and blue lights of
the ‘Tree of Hope and Chances’ donated by Newbridge Nurseries. The Tree offered a chance to win amazing prizes and was sold out by 11am on the first day of the fair. It then hosted messages of hope from friends and family hoping for those loved ones fighting cancer, or memories of who had sadly lost the fight. Sally Pavey, volunteer organiser, said: “The tree hosted some amazing prizes supplied by local firms. Their generosity made for a quick sale as word spread to the prizes on offer such as the luxury villa for a weeks holiday and a brand new Audi for the weekend were quickly found on the Tree. “The best part of the fair was the atmosphere, everyone was so friendly, happy, in all volunteering, exhibiting, attending to raise money to fight cancer through a cheque being sent to the Cancer Research UK laboratory in Brighton. The event was organised by volunteers and so all the money raised goes direct to those working at the grass roots of stop cancer sooner. “We aimed to raise money to save lives and once we have calculated the final figures we look forward to travelling down to meet with the amazing professors and experts that are seeking to find cures for all 200 types of cancer here in Sussex.” Picture: Volunteers, Jeremy Senneck and Connie Wiffen, welcoming visitors.
Students put employability course into practice
2017/18 Employability students at Collyers have been helping the next generation of students prepare for the future. In the ever increasing competitive job market, students need to hone that edge to get ahead in the marketplace and Collyer’s has addressed this growing need by developing the Employability programme, which successfully ran throughout last year. Students applying for the course this year, were put through their paces by an advice and interview panel comprising students who successfully completed the Employability course last year: Jack Manger, who this year is to become a Star Expert Sales Assistant for Mercedes, Dan Goodyer
who is pursuing his application to West Sussex Police and Ed Pirie who will be completing his A levels and contributing to the development of the Employability course, before commencing training as a Primary School Teaching Assistant. Jack Manger said: “The course featured a wide variety of experts and catered for everyone. You could practice presenting, stepping forward, building your confidence; or if you were more interested in being behind the scenes in business environment, you try your hand at organising events.” Fellow class of 2018 Employability student, Dan Goodyer, said: “I had always wanted to follow
a career path into the police and I didn’t think I needed anything else to supplement what I already knew, but I needed to consider honing my skills. “With the employability programme I gained confidence and was able to put into practice the skills I already had, but I did discover that I still had a lot to learn, and the course really opened my eyes to a more professional approach to my practice. Lucy helped me get a work placement with Worthing police, which really spurred me on to follow my dreams. I would definitely recommend this unique course. If it is something that you are considering then you will not be disappointed!” Ed Pirie said: “This has been a great course and I’m looking forward to helping out this year.” Lucy Hargreaves, Employability co-ordinator, commented: “Big thanks to Dan, Ed and Jack for helping out on the advice panel. It has been so enjoyable watching the students really engage with the subject. It has also been encouraging to see how much they have been able to learn and then apply to job applications and interviews.” Deputy Principal Steve Martell, who teaches the Employability course, said: “I could not be prouder of the Employability class of 2017/18 and I have to say that the 2018/19 group also have incredible potential.”

Spitfire snap is success for Sussex photographer Blinders’ amateur photography group members on a trip to Sheffield Park & Gardens, and then across to Bodiam Castle to further practise their hobby. Mr Spring commented: “It is incredibly humbling to think my image won, with such a high standard of entries involved. I would like to pass on my sincere gratitude to all those that voted.” Sue Rose, Operations Director at Southern Transit, added: “Sussex has been the home of Southern Transit for over 15 years and, as such, we ran this competition to bring the community together, to showcase just how beautiful the county is. Congratulations to Mr Spring for winning the overall competition after receiving an incredible show of support in the public vote - a much deserved winner with a fantastic photograph. “We would like to say thank you to everyone that entered the competition and took the time to vote for our winner. A special mention should also go to Rachel Bigsby and Damian Brewis who were our two runners up in the competition receiving 82 and 74 votes respectively.”
Southern Transit - one of Sussex’s leading, and last remaining, independently run bus and coach companies - is delighted to announce that the winner of their ‘Splendid Summer in Sussex’ photography competition is Wayne Spring from Seaford. The competition saw just under 70 photographs submitted by Sussex residents and, although all of the shots were of an incredible standard, it was Mr Spring’s enhanced photo of a Spitfire flying at sunset over Coastguard cottage and the Seven Sisters, at Cuckmere Haven, that won over the public - receiving an astonishing 492 votes out of 1,645. As the winner, Mr Spring will be rewarded with free private travel on one of Southern Transit’s new Citymaster state-of-the-art buses for up to 72 guests - a prize which he is using to take his ‘Tweaky

Local woman creates online menopause support community
I thought I was losing my mind; My confidence was at an all-time low, I was depressed, suffered anxiety.
Menopause is a natural part of all women’s lives, however, for 1 in 4 women, it can be a difficult time both physically and emotionally. With this in mind, a resident of Billingshurst decided to start an online community for women who are experiencing these difficulties. Following her own surgical menopause aged 36, Sharon Vibert realised there was no local support. GP’s have limited knowledge and are financially restricted to offer ongoing help and support. Sharon’s blog talks openly about her menopause experience and how she’s managing her symptoms through good diet and

Sharon explained: “I thought I was losing my mind; My confidence was at an all-time low, I was depressed, suffered anxiety. I was in pain, experiencing awful hot flushes and couldn’t sleep. I gained weight and had no motivation. I was seriously concerned there was something terribly wrong with me. The only menopause specialist I could see locally was private, so I paid for

and with the right knowledge, self-management. She admitted that she isn’t qualified to prescribe, but can describe what the symptoms of menopause are and how she herself manages them. Sharon now talks to groups about menopause and is working with local employers educating them as to how they can support women through this phase of their lives: “Menopause is still a taboo subject, good conversations and awareness will help to bust this taboo and go some way to ensure menopause is a positive experience for all women.” To read Sharon’s blog, please visit: www.goodmidlifevibes.com

Pulborough’s famous Harvest Fair and St Catherine’s Hospice to provide new carer service in Horsham Duck Race help the “Blue Angel” get locals to attend hospital and doctors
Over 1000 visits to hospital or doctors every year by Pulborough and West Chiltington people are only possible with the help of Pulborough Community Care’s Transport Scheme. According to all concerned with its running, this much used and loved service needs to expand, with more money and volunteer drivers. Malcolm Gray from the Pulborough Harvest Fair, and LesleyAnne Feldmanis from the Pulborough Duck Race, did their bit as they handed over a £500 cheque to John Dixon, Chairman of Community Care, and Mike Clenshaw, a long term organiser of the Transport Scheme, in front of their wheelchair friendly vehicle,
known lovingly by its users as the “Blue Angel”. The money will go towards the £10,000 yearly cost of running the Transport Scheme. One of the users, Bill, a resident of West Chiltington who has to use a wheelchair to get around, is a regular user of the “Blue Angel” and is grateful for being taken to medical appointments. Bill said: “The drivers are so kind to me and I am so thankful that they get me there and back safely. I don’t know what I would do if Pulborough Community Transport wasn’t available”. Another user, Mary, a visually impaired resident of the village, said: “Pulborough Community Transport is a lifeline for me, as, without it, I wouldn’t be able to
get to my various hospital and doctor appointments. I have been using the service for many years and am just so grateful to the Co-ordinator, and drivers who collect me from my home, and then always wait for me during my medical appointment and take me back home. They are always cheerful and can’t do enough to help me”. John Dixon explained: “Community Care’s ambition is to help more people, other than just medical visits, to improve their lives - otherwise people may be housebound and isolated. All this takes volunteers and money. While the £500 is a great help, we now need 15 more volunteer drivers to cover this need... If anybody would consider being a volunteer driver, and needed more information, they should call our coordinator, Christine Lindsay, on 0759-1258409 between 9 and 5 on weekdays” Malcolm Gray and Lesley-Anne also agreed that volunteers were key to making all these ‘good things’ work for the benefit of the community: “Both the Fair and the Ducks need energetic people to help with these events and if anyone wanted to know what would be involved in volunteering should call Rob Aylott of Pulborough Community Partnership which runs these events on 01798-872823.”
St Catherine’s Hospice is thrilled to share that the League of Friends of Horsham Hospital has entered into a joint programme with them by funding the development of a new carers’ support service in and around Horsham. As part of their ambition to make sure nobody faces death and loss alone, the local hospice is on hand to offer support to family and friends of local terminally ill people. The organisation knows that caring for someone at the end of their life is challenging and they’re there to offer

advice to minimise the impact on carers’ own health and wellbeing, so that they’re best able to provide care to their loved ones. Recognising this, the League of Friends has committed recurring funds to St Catherine’s to develop a multi-year carers’ service. Their investment will draw on the expertise of hospice teams and volunteers, and allow St Catherine’s to complete research with a range of local carers. This will allow them to find out what support local carers most need, and work to deliver this. The service will start in 2019 after the local research has been completed. Dr Judy McMahon, Chairperson of League of Friends, said: “We’re thrilled to be partnering with St Catherine’s on this exciting new service. It’s great to know it will help support carers in our local community at a time it’s most needed.” Giles Tomsett, Chief Executive at St Catherine’s, said: “It’s
It’s our ultimate ambition to make sure that nobody in our community has to face death and loss alone our ultimate ambition to make sure that nobody in our community has to face death and loss alone. Working with the League of Friends will take us one step closer to this. We’re looking forward to providing more targeted support to carers in and around Horsham, and meeting a currently unmet need. We’re also really grateful for the League of Friends’ generosity in funding the development of this vital, new service.” If you are a carer and are interested in helping develop this new service, please contact Joanna Tuck, Information and Resources Co-Ordinator at St Catherine’s, on 01293 447354 or by emailing joannatuck@stch.org.uk

Christ’s Hospital pupils coach at football festival for people with learning difficulties
Fifteen pupil sports ambassadors from Christ’s Hospital School spent a day last month at the picturesque Friends of Arundel Castle Cricket Ground assisting, officiating and coaching in a football festival for adults with learning disabilities. The event at Arundel took place on the cricket ground that was created by Henry, 15th Duke of Norfolk way back in 1895. The outfield that has, in the past, been graced by many world famous cricketers, was generously given over for the day to allow this most worthwhile football tournament to take place. There were over 100 participants at the event organised by Matt Swanson the Deputy Manager of Aldingbourne Country Centre, one of the nine care centres participating in the event. The festival was a great success – and despite the grey clouds overhead the weather held out to help ensure that, what proved to be a very competitive and exciting tournament, was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Toby Edwards, a Year 11 CH pupil, said: “It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and knowing that you impacted on so many peoples’ lives, in a positive way, really puts a smile on your face.” The CH Sports Ambassadors scheme was set up 2 years ago to provide pupils with a platform to develop leadership skills, as well as a pathway into sports coaching and officiating. Part of the course is to provide the pupils with experience of working with people with learning difficulties in a sporting environment. One of the CH Sports Ambassadors, Jack Woodford, commented: “Working with such lovely and charismatic people at Arundel, was an experience that will help drive my enthusiasm for sport and has made me more determined to shape my own life to the full.” The tournament could not have taken place without the generous support of the Director of Cricket at the Friends of Arundel Castle

Cricket Club, Johnny Barclay. Christ’s Hospital’s Director of Sport, Dave Messenger, said: “It is fantastic that Christ’s Hospital pupils are able to support such a worthwhile event. There was fun and enjoyment in abundance, all wrapped up with a hefty dose of competitiveness! “Some of the participants had
severe learning difficulties and it was a delight to see how the CH pupils managed the day; our pupils certainly left Arundel having had as rich an experience as those participating from the various centres. We look forward to assisting again next year and with the cricket festival in the summer term.”
Horsham Lib Dems announce house building plans for key workers The Horsham Liberal Democrats today have announced that if elected they would begin a house building programme for use by key public-sector workers. This is the first in a series of major policy announcements ahead of the full manifesto release for the 2019 Horsham District Council elections. The initial details of the policy are as follows: A Liberal Democrat run Horsham District Council would immediately begin building council and social housing to be used by key workers in Horsham. Originally a Liberal Democrat Policy, the Conservatives in government have finally lifted the cap on borrowing to build social housing, facilitating this policy. Once built, social housing would remain under control of Horsham District Council and would not be sold on. This would allow key workers who face constraints, such as a cap on wage increases a secure place to live. The Horsham Liberal Democrats recognise that the district’s high cost of living can put some off moving to the area. This policy would
provide affordable housing to those who need it most. Leader of the Liberal Democrat group on Horsham District Council, Dr David Skipp, said: “This is the first step in beginning to create a fairer and more prosperous district. It is clear that the Horsham District has an affordable housing crisis; this policy will begin to put right these issues. Only the Horsham Liberal Democrats have the answers to a range of serious questions facing the area” Liberal Democrat Leader, Vince Cable, called it “The first step to serious revival of social housing”.

Post, ‘some are career artists who exhibit and sell across the entire country, others are more hobbyartists who just present their work locally. Overall however the standard is quite exceptional.’ All the work at the fair is for sale, prices ranging from a few pounds to a few thousand pounds. When it comes to art to hang on the wall visitors have the chance to pick up an original work or, increasingly, a high quality Giclée print at a fraction of the cost. Sculpture and craft work pieces are normally ‘oneoffs’. The work is hung in a contemporary but informal gallery setting and the artists are in attendance throughout. Abstract

October 20th and 21st sees Horsham Artists Annual Contemporary Art Fair taking place at Parkside – County Hall North. Last year the event attracted a crowd of nearly 2,000 people ranging from serious collectors to those who were ‘simply looking’. It’s a great opportunity to experience some of Horsham’s culture.
As ever there will be a vast selection of work on show from the 45 artists present. The list includes painters, sculptors, jewellers and ceramicists, textile specialists, those who work in mixed media and even ‘up-cyclers’. Mark Wilson, Chair of the HAOS Group, feels the quality of work this year is outstanding. ‘Horsham has a very rich and talented art scene,’ he told the District
painter Fleur Cowgill says that the artists welcome the chance to talk to art lovers. ‘Most of us work alone in our studios creating the work and we’re not doing it for ourselves but to share,’ Fleur says. ‘The important thing for all of us is to have it on show to the public and get their feedback. We love talking about it, so don’t be shy and please come and ask us questions.’ With Christmas just around the corner the Contemporary Art Fair is a great place to buy something unusual and unique for yourself or a loved one. Finally, it’s worth remembering that if you don’t see quite what you want, but like a particular artist’s style, all the exhibitors are happy to be commissioned for a special piece.

Due to popular demand, after his first tour-de-force, smash hit, sell out tour, ‘My Life Story’, Suggs is treading the boards again with a brand new show and, next month for one night only, The Hawth Crawley will present ‘What a King Cnut’. Phil Jerrod Fifteenth season in... a blinding bill, as you’d expect... and a great way to round off the weekend, and put a little spring-in-thestep prior to the week ahead. As ever, resident host Kevin Precious, will be on hand to oversee the proceedings. This month’s trio of mirth-making headliners includes: the stream of consciousness style ranting of Phil Jerrod, ‘Casual brilliance’ – The Guardian; the potty-mouthed veteran that is Sol Bernstein, ‘’An instantly winning creation’’ - The Evening Standard.; and circuit legend Rudi Lickwood, ‘Observant engaging interactive comic whose routines roll out like warm custard over Spotted Dick’ - The Independent. Phil Jerrod The first thing you notice about Phil Jerrod is the quite alarming amount of face-foliage that clings to his chin. You’d expect the possessor of a look like that to be an out-and-out comedy oddball, but

Rudi Lickwood it turns out that behind the beard is a more conventional kind of comic, albeit one whose instinctive mastery of his form immediately marks him out as one to watch. His humour is straightforwardly observational, dealing in stories about his middle-class background, his working life and, yes, his beard; stories that are immediately relatable, concerning subjects that are familiar go-tos for many young comics. What distinguishes him is the casual brilliance of his writing, rolling out inspired gags and exhibiting incredible fluency throughout. His innovative stream-ofconsciousness style, inspired by a harsh upbringing in the cruel and unforgiving conditions of middleclass rural Warwickshire, has seen him perform in clubs, arts centres and theatres all across the UK and helped build his reputation as having grown one of the largest beards in stand-up comedy. Sol Bernstein
Sol Bernstein Show-biz legend Sol Bernstein is back !! ‘One part Alf Garnett, two parts Mel Brooks, and three parts like nothing you’ve ever heard’ - The Guardian The legend that is Sol Bernstein escaped the Pogroms in Russia, the Nazis in Germany, and went on to become the World’s 1st all-round entertainer. He’s a song and dance man, a comedian, a magician, an actor, a Jazz musician (Sol was rated “BEST TRIANGLE” player in the USA in the ‘50s by performers like Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington). Also rated the best impersonator EVER !! He’s performed all over the world at venues including The London Palladium, New York’s Carnegie Hall, The Paris Olympia, Caesars Palace Las Vegas, and Scunthorpe Baths, but it’s at night clubs where Sol really comes to life. His charisma, his style, his catch phrase “why don’t you put
on a tie” his chutzpah, put it all together and you see the magic that is Sol Bernstein. Rudi Lickwood With a super confident playful personality oozing charisma, Rudi’s infectious charm has made him a desirable commodity. Using his sense of humour and razorsharp material, Rudi has built an outstanding list of Radio and Television projects with his headline performances at esteemed venues across the UK. Recent television and media projects include; Get me the Producer (Ch4) and Funny Business (BBC2), plus a nationwide project with Mediatheme hosting the most comprehensive comedy entertainment system to date. Rudi is currently working the series ‘Lickwood’ with BAFTA awardwinning writer Sharon Foster. Working closely with the Combined Forces Entertainment (CSE), Rudi has toured in Afghanistan, Iraq and Bosnia, keeping the troops entertained all over the world. A charming character, Rudi is loved wherever he performs.Rudi has also presented awards and performed at high-profile events for companies such as American Express, British Telecom Heinz, Diageo and Coca-Cola. Bill Kenwright’s ‘Dazzling’ (Sunday Telegraph) production of the international smash hit musical Blood Brothers comes to The Hawth Crawley from Tuesday 16 - Saturday 20 October. Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving story of twin boys separated at birth, only to be reunited by a twist of fate and a mother’s haunting secret. The memorable score includes A Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True. When Mrs Johnstone, a young mother, is deserted by her husband and left to her own devices to provide for seven hungry children, she takes a job as a housekeeper in order to make ends meet. It is not long before her brittle world crashes around her when she discovers herself to be pregnant yet again – this time with twins! In a moment of weakness and despera-
tion, she enters a secret pact with her employer, which leads inexorably to the show’s shattering climax. Olivier Award nominated British actress Linzi Hateley makes her debut in the seminal role of Mrs Johnstone. She said: “Mrs Johnstone is an iconic role that I’ve always secretly dreamed of playing. I’m thrilled to finally get the chance to fulfil a dream - and to perform it to audiences right across our country.” Linzi has performed in countless West End productions, the most recent of which being the role of Donna in Mamma Mia. At just seventeen years old, she was cast as the title role in the Royal Shakespeare’s production of CARRIE: THE MUSICAL, a role that would take her to Broadway. She went on to star as The Narrator in the London Palladium production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, alongside Jason Donovan as Joseph, for which she was nominated for an Olivier Award. Other West End roles include Éponine in Les Misérables, Roxie Hart in Chicago, Rizzo in Grease and Winifred Banks in Mary Poppins. She also starred as Helen in the National Theatre’s revival of London Road. A sensational cast, incredible show stopping music, remarkable staging and five star performances make Blood Brothers an enthralling night of entertainment. Performances: Tuesday 16 - Saturday 20 October 7.30pm, & Wed, Thur & Sat 2.30pm, The Hawth Crawley. Tickets: Available from The Hawth Box Office:01293 553636 and online: www.hawth.co.uk

Enjoy a taste of country living – with Henry Adams Lettings
For anyone looking to try out country life, Henry Adams Lettings offer a wide range of rural and semi-rural properties for rental in the villages and countryside around Horsham. Hannah Glew, manager at Henry Adams Lettings in Horsham, said, “We always have demand for rural and semi-rural homes so landlords who choose to place their properties with
us to let can be confident in our knowledge and experience of letting countryside and village homes as well as those in central Horsham. “We have a good selection of available properties for our high calibre tenants and corporate clients to consider. Many people are seeking something a little different from what the rest of the letting market has to offer.
Families especially are keen to taste country life so rural homes are highly sought after and prospective tenants are often prepared to pay a premium for well-presented properties. “We also get a number of enquiries from families moving out of London who would like their family to enjoy a country upbringing, but don’t want to be too far from a 24 hour Tesco or
to get to London and the south coast,” said Hannah. About five miles south of Horsham in Cowfold is a detached house with 3 double bedrooms and 4 receptions in a sought after area of glorious West Sussex countryside. There’s a large garden with views over fields and farmlands and a small orchard, while the interior includes a stylish country kitchen and a sitting room which has dual aspect views over the gardens and for cosy nights in, there’s a wood burning stove. This is both a charming and practical home currently available to rent at £1,700 monthly plus fees. Renting a countryside or village property provides the opportunity to experience rural and village living without the long term commitment to buy and while some tenants will go on to purchase, many of Henry Adams’s tenants choose to extend their letting arrangements as they settle in to country life. For advice on any aspect of residential lettings or if you have a property you are considering letting, or know someone who does, contact Henry Adams Lettings in Horsham on 01403 282500 or visit henryadams.co.uk or visit one of their many offices across the region.

Horsham exit the FA Cup at Poole Tuesday October 9 – FA Cup 3rd Qualifying Round Poole Town 2 1 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter After the sides had drawn 1-1 at Lancing last Saturday, Horsham’s 200 mile round trip to Dorset for their 3rd Qualifying Round FA Cup replay against Poole Town ended in disappointment. Horsham scored first, but Poole equalised just before half time and then netted the winning goal shortly after the break. Horsham gave a good account of themselves, creating chances against higher league Poole, but, despite their best efforts they were unable to take the game into extra time. A full report will appear in your copy of next week’s District Post.
Southwater Royal Girls thrilled with dream debut Andy New told us: “Football is the biggest female team sport in England and its growing, and at the Royals we believe that there is massive growth potential in girls’ football, so we started the new team and it was wonderful to see their opening game played in such a fantastic spirit and with extremely high quality performances.” All Southwater Royals Man-

Southwater Royals U12 Girls 12 0 Lindfield Girls Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Since their foundation in 1997 Southwater Royals Football Club have developed into an FA Chartered Standard Club – one of the first clubs in the area to be so accredited with the accolade only awarded to clubs committed to promoting excellent qualified coaching in a safe, rewarding environment. And, now that the club is firmly
established as a well-respected community organisation they have launched an Under 12 Girls’ Section – and, just four weeks after it was formed the new team got off to a flying start with big win in their first ever match in the Sussex Women & Girls’ U12 League. They won the game – against their counterparts from Lindfield - 12-0 with Captain Siobhan Bridgewater leading from the front with five goals, Grace Bates adding three and Maddie Wilders, Maisie Ayling, Charlotte Doyle and Mia Scott also scoring. Siobhan’s opening
goal quickly settled any nerves, getting the team off to a confident start, boosted by great support from the touchline, and she was understandably elated, telling the District Post: “We love playing football for Southwater Royals girls’ team and can’t wait for the season ahead!” Supporting mum, Emma Bates says: “The girls were utterly brilliant considering that they have only been together for a few weeks and this was their first match. We’re all so excited for the next game!” Southwater Royals Chairman
agers and Assistant Managers are encouraged and supported in pursuing further coaching qualifications, and they are trained in emergency first aid procedures and required to retain and develop their knowledge of the game through membership of the Sussex County FA Coaches Association. Andy New summed up saying: “The new Girls’ Team has a programme of 14 games in the league and will play friendlies, too – with upcoming matches against Crawley Wasps, Cuckfield Cosmos, Henfield, Horsham Sparrows, and Shoreham. We’re making huge strides at the club in creating opportunities for girls to play football and at the first match I was so proud to see how
much fun the team were having. Team Manager Paul Showell shares our belief that football improves self esteem and in the right environment fosters new friendships that can last a lifetime.” Southwater Royals Girls Team play their home games on Sunday mornings at Horsham’s Millais School, kicking off at 11.30 am and if you have a daughter in school years 4, 5, 6 or 7 and they’d like to get involved in football then open training sessions are held every Monday evening from 6pm at Farlington School on a pay as you go basis. New joiners are assured of a good welcome and Andy New will be happy to supply any further details needed – via andy.new@ sky.com. The club is also looking for a sponsor to kit out the girls with rain jackets, so if any company would like to support the club in that way, promoting their business at the same time, then Andy New would be delighted to hear from them. Horsham beat high flying Phoenix and hold Poole in Cup Tuesday October 2 – The Bostik League – South East Division Horsham 3 2 Phoenix Sports Saturday October 6 – FA Cup 3rd Q Round – Horsham 1 1 Poole Town Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham warmed up for their FA Cup tie against Poole with a determined win against third in the table Phoenix Sports at Lancing, fighting back after conceding two early goals within the first 20 minutes. The Hornets might have scored first, but Tyrell Richardson-Brown shot wide before Conrad Lee’s left footer put Phoenix in front. Horsham responded, but to no avail, then a failed clearance enabled Kyren Mundel-Smith to evade Josh Pelling’s dive to put the visitors further ahead. But, Horsham were coming more into the game, only for Will Hoare, James McElligott and Dean Lovegrove to all be denied when well set. A goal was, though, on its way – George Hayward’s placement beating Phoenix keeper Steven Phillips. Then, just before the break, the ball remained in the area following a Horsham corner and Hoare got the ball past Phillips for Horsham to equalise with their second goal in six telling
minutes. Second half missed chances cost Phoenix dear, Horsham going in front with Jack Brivio’s diving header in the 57th minute. Both sides then created further opportunities, Horsham featured more strongly and were delighted to take all three points with a gutsy 3-2 win. At this early stage
of the season, Horsham are 15th, and Cray Wanderers top, some distance above Hythe Town, with Herne Bay bottom, just ahead of Guernsey. Horsham’s next scheduled league game is on Saturday October 20, when East Grinstead come to Lancing – that fixture will be re-arranged should Horsham progress in the FA Cup (see below). Meanwhile, great devel-
opment news - the main stand is being erected at the Hornets’ new Hop Oast home! In the FA Cup last Saturday – also at Lancing – Horsham again went behind early on, when Poole Town’s Richard Gillespie gave the visitors the lead inside two minutes. Despite the unrelenting rain, spectators were treated to a gripping cup tie. Poole had just walloped Farnborough six nil, but, undaunted, the Hornets battled back despite being tested by several golden opportunities, and persistence paid off when, after recently celebrating his 100th appearance for Horsham, Joe Shelley headed the equaliser just before half time. Both teams created second half chances, with Horsham just unable to clinch this tie against higher league opposition – in the attempt to take them through to the 4th Qualifying Round for the first time in 10 years - when substitute Harvey Sparks’ shot seared the cross bar, heralding Tuesday’s replay, the winners of which will play Bostik Premier Division Haringey-Borough at Tottenham’s iconic White Hart Lane (where Haringey play their home matches). Horsham have not played Haringey-Borough for forty-five years, when, that long ago, as Edmonton-Haringey, they suffered an Horsham Athenian League ‘double’ en route to the Hornets clinching the league title. The next round tie will be played on Saturday 20th October.

YMCA remain top of league and progress in the cup
Dean Bown Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter In their Southern Combination Football League Premier Division replay at Saltdean’s Hill Park, Horsham YMCA came a cropper against the spirited hosts. The original game in August was abandoned because of a serious injury, tantalisingly poised with YM 3-1 up but Saltdean having a penalty to take with sufficient time left for any one of three results. In the replay, after conceding an early penalty YM found themselves three goals adrift midway through the first half, Manager Peter Buckland saying: “We switched off at the back.” But, Dean Bown responded with two goals and honours might have been even at the break. Despite constant second half possession YM, depleted by absences, including Tony Nwachukwu - seeing out a two match ban, were
unable to penetrate Saltdean’s defence and the score remained 3-2 in Saltdean’s favour at the final whistle. Peter Buckland expected YM to bounce back against Eastbourne United at the Oval – and they did, scoring three times in a strong first half performance, through Dean Bown, Dan Mobsby and Tom Gilbert. Dean Bown scored again 10 minutes into the second half to wrap up YM’s comfortable win, as a result of which YM top the table with 24 points, two ahead of Chichester City, who have a game in hand. In Round 1 of the Parafix Sussex Challenge Cup (the longest cup competition in the county, having first been played for in the 1882-3 season, shortly after the foundation of the Sussex FA), YM overwhelmed Midhurst & Easebourne from Southern Combination Division One. Midhurst spectators are used to high scoring games – some won, some lost, including a recent 6-5 defeat at Oakwood. And, at The Rotherfield goalseekers were not disappointed - Dean Bown was prolific again – after scoring in the second minute he soon had a hat trick before Tony Nwachukwu and Mark Cave added two more goals for YM to lead 5-0 at the break. Nwachukwu scored again early in the second half, YM romping home 6 nil winners. YMCA are in action again on Saturday, when they host Kensington Borough in Round 1 of the FA Vase, then, on Tuesday (16th) they go to Arundel in the Peter Bentley Cup.
Two league wins and a narrow last ditch defeat for Heath Southern Combination Football League Premier Division Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter
Scan me!
After beating beleaguered Little Common 3-0 in East Sussex, Broadbridge Heath went one better at Lancing. Little Common last won on August 7th and then lost four games and drew one coming in to the Heath game (after which they lost twice more, placing them 17th in the table above Arundel, Loxwood and Eastbourne United). On the Artificial Grass Pitch at Lancing, Heath quickly got into their stride with two early goals from Devon Fender. Then, just before the break, Martyn Flack put Heath further ahead. Second half Lancing substitutions failed to bring about any change in their fortunes, before Max Howell added to their woes with his 90 minute fourth goal for the visitors, sealing Heath’s emphatic victory.
Last Saturday at the Saffrons Heath suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of Eastbourne Town, injuries to Alfie Jones, Rob Godfrey, Marlon Maxwell and Jamie Robinson, plus the unavailability of
keeper Kieron Thorp, Richard Wetton and Tim Cook resulting in a much changed line up. Heath conceded – and repelled - early corners before Dean Wright put them in front despite Eastbourne’s control of the game. And, Eastbourne promptly equalised when an
attack was not cleared, allowing Dan Perry to score from close range. Heath were then disadvantaged by another injury – to Lee Carney – but they still managed to regain the lead when Max Howell found the corner of the net. Leading 2-1, Heath kept Eastbourne in check after the resumption. Yet, another injury was inflicted on Heath, Howell having to leave the field. And, just when Heath were thinking that they had all three points in the bag, in the 94th minute Eastbourne’s Cole’s header drew them level. Heath then paid a heavy price for indiscipline when they were reduced to nine players after first Charlie Pitcher and then Scott Weller were red carded in quick succession, the free kick resulting from the second offence ricocheting off the wall and over Mark Fox, enabling the hosts to snatch their win in the 100th minute. Broadbridge Heath, now 7th, are in league action again on Saturday – at the Leisure Centre against Lancing, whom they beat 4-0 in September’s away fixture.

Back to back win sends Horsham top Saturday October 6 – South League – Premier – Division 2 Slough 1 3 Horsham Men’s 1st XI Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter
Slough had been promoted in each of the last two seasons but were no match for Horsham’s strong second half display in drenching rain at the Berkshire club’s Upton Park ground. Yet, the hosts scored first when a poor pass was pounced
After last season I have to say that the view from the top of the table looks much nicer than the view from the bottom! upon and the Horsham defence penetrated, but it was to be Slough’s only glory. Earlier Horsham had been controlling the game with accurate passes, Joey Humphreys almost converting Freddie Campbell’s supply. Subsequently, Horsham found Slough’s hard hitting style difficult to counter – until a sure build up fed Sam Gill who equalised with aplomb. A sliding tackle by Horsham keeper Ollie Mathias conceded
a penalty, but Horsham were reprieved by the upright, leaving the score one apiece at the interval. After the break Horsham really came into their own and when Humphreys was floored by the Slough keeper, Sean Pearcy stepped up to convert from the spot, giving him his fourth goal of the season, making him the league’s leading scorer to date. Horsham’s 2-1 lead provoked Slough into serial offending, resulting in a red card, a second player leaving the pitch after a team mate had been ‘yellowed’ on the bench for abusive language. However, the ensuing mayhem did not faze Chas Richardson, who scored a close range goal to put the result beyond doubt. Horsham Team Manager Al Campbell told the District Post: “After last season I have to say that the view from the top of the table looks much nicer than the view from the bottom! But, I’m concerned about the number of chances we missed – at this lower, slower level our forwards are getting opportunities they’re simply not used to – we need to learn composure to enable us to convert those chances.” On Saturday Horsham welcome 7th placed Wycombe to Christ’s Hospital for a 1pm start. Meanwhile, after two games, Horsham top the table, shading London Academicals on goal difference. Winless Slough are currently bottom.
Horsham’s delighted with first national league win Saturday October 6 – Investec Women’s League – Conference East Horsham 3 1 Bedford Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Playing in cold, slanting rain throughout, Horsham Ladies completed their first win on their return to the national league. And, it was all the more creditable because they fought back from being a goal down to win by two clear goals. After trailing 0-1 at the break Louisa Denman equalised for Horsham, before Emily Smith secured the lead. Ladies Club Captain CJ White then put the icing on the cake, Team Captain Hannah Jackson telling the District Post: “Great to win today in our new higher league, but we’ve got new players to bed in and so we’ve still got a lot of work to do!” Team Manager Jane Denman said: “After the early set back

Horsham withstand pressure with third win Saturday October 7 – London 2 South East Horsham 24 20 Charlton Park Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter
Games between these two sides have tended to be close and this was another see-sawing affair, on this occasion Horsham successfully closing it down to win after scoring two late tries. A perfect autumn day on Friday was followed by freezing rain throughout the game, sweeping down the pitch, hampering ball handling and accurate kicking. Charlton Park with the rain at their backs led 10-7 at half time, Michael Tredgett’s try in the 17th minute, converted by Tom Johnson accounting for Horsham’s score, while Rob Saunderson crossed the line twice for the visitors. Horsham missed two second half penalties, but tries from Vince Everitt, Chris Double and, shortly afterwards in the 70th minute, by Marcus Condon – the latter converted by Johnson – boosted Horsham’s lead to 24-15 after Saunderson had notched up his hat trick aided by a dominant scrum. The same player’s fourth try from a pushover being insufficient to deny Horsham, whose firm tackling kept the visitors’ pressure at bay during the closing stages. Michael Tredgett was Horsham’s Player of the Match. Charlton Park said: “Horsham’s 4G pitch looked beautiful and played fairly, once the players had got used to the surprisingly low bounce of the ball. Horsham were perfect hosts and we look forward to welcoming them ‘back down to

Photo by Di Game Saturday October 6 – London 3 South East Pulborough 19 20 Vigo Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Despite the atrocious weather, Pulborough were well supported, but the faithful were disappointed with the narrowest of defeats. Boro, though, opened the scoring through a Brad Game try, converted by Frazer Oliphant-Hope.
But, Vigo, from Meopham near Gravesend, responded with a try from wide, which was converted, followed by a penalty to leave Boro trailing 7-10 at the break. In the second half, after increased Boro possession, Harry Short broke free on the right and Oliphant-Hope’s excellent kick in competition with the cross wind gave Boro a four point lead, only for Vigo to kick a short range penalty in front of the posts to reduce the deficit to a single point. With the rain eas-
ing slightly, a Boro drive was just held up on the line, until, at the other end, Vigo bulldozed their way over, adding the extras to restore their lead. With time running out fast, Boro needed a converted try to clinch victory and Luke Kilford ran down the slope to get over in the right corner at the bottom end, but the crucial kick was just wide, cruelly leaving Boro one point adrift when the whistle promptly blew, leaving Coach Clayton Saunders to rue the absence of some key regulars, requiring others to play out of position. President Alex Steele said: “We got off to a good start this season, but the games haven’t been easy – like this one!” Boro Captain Frazer Oliphant-Hope told the District Post: “We started this game well, but couldn’t capitalise. They were a bit stronger than us and really wanted to win. Frustrating!” Pulborough are next in action on Saturday 20th, when they visit another Kent side – 10th-placed Park House from Bromley. Boro are 4th, one point behind Beccehamians. Crowborough head the table with Old Dunstonians in the runners up spot.
