Horsham Remembers Horsham District Remembrance Services this Sunday Down the centuries Horsham’s ancient Carfax – the heart of the town - has seen many celebrations and ceremonies, but the one this Sunday – the Horsham Remembrance Sunday Service - will be even more poignant than ever. This year’s service marks the precise 100th anniversary of the signing of the armistice at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, ending World War One hostilities between the Allies and Germany on land sea and air. The Great War was known as the war to end all wars, but, as we are only too painfully aware, the 1918 armistice – signed in a carriage of the private train of Marshal of France, Ferdinand Foch, the Allied Supreme Commander, in the Forest of Compiegne – has not eliminated wars, a further devastating war breaking out 21 years later, followed by current simultaneous conflicts around

the globe. Sunday’s open air service will be conducted adjacent to the Horsham War Memorial, framed as it is with railings topped with iconic poppies, the enduring symbol of the common field flower commemorating military personnel who have died in wars, inspired by the World War 1 poem “In Flanders Fields”. The seven large displays at Horsham’s War Memorial record those - ‘in proud and grateful memory’ - who made the ultimate sacrifice, including the listing of a number of well known family names from around the district. At Sunday’s always moving public service a number of local organisations will be participating, including the Royal British Legion and representatives of armed service and youth organisations, with the parade arriving at the War Memorial at approximately 10.50 am. The short service will be led by The Rev. David Bouskill, beginning with the apposite hymn “O God our Help in Ages Past.” The playing of The Last Post will follow, after which the Vicar will lead the Exhortation – a touching extract

from Robert Laurence Binyon’s World War 1 poem: “They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old, Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn, At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them” The two minutes’ silence in memory of the fallen will be held at 11am, at the end of which Councillor Peter Burgess, the Chairman of Horsham District Council, will lead the laying of wreaths on behalf of the people of our district, subsequent wreaths being laid by Nigel Caplin, Chairman of the Royal British Legion Horsham Branch, Jeremy Quin, the town’s MP, and Councillor Brad Watson of West Sussex County Council. At the conclusion of the wreath laying ceremony, a verse of the National Anthem will be sung and a Thanksgiving Prayer recited to mark the end of the War Memorial service. The re-assembled parade will then proceed to the Parish Church – St Mary’s in Horsham’s Causeway - for the town’s Remembrance Day Service, to which everyone is invited.

Hundreds of men up and down the country will grow a beard this December to raise money for Bowel Cancer UK, and it’s not too late to sign up and show your support for the campaign too. Taking part in Decembeard is really simple. All you need to do is clean shave on 30 November and let your facial fuzz grow throughout the month. Already bearded? No problem. Dye, ditch or decorate your beard and join the campaign. Bowel cancer is the third most common cancer in men in the UK and the nation’s second biggest cancer killer. However it shouldn’t be, as it’s treatable and curable, especially if diagnosed early. Sports broadcaster Jim Rosenthal, celebrity chef Brian Turner CBE and Olympian Carl Hester MBE are backing the campaign. Olympic gold medallist for Dressage Carl Hester has pledged his support for Decembeard. He explained: “I’m thrilled to be supporting Decembeard, which is especially personal to me. I’ve had

polyps removed from my bowel and now have annual check-ups, but the realisation that it could have developed in to bowel cancer really hit me. This disease affects 1 in 14 men in the UK - it’s a very important cause.” Sports broadcaster Jim Rosenthal agrees: “Dads, brothers, sons, nephews, grandads, uncles – get growing and raise as much as you can. It’s easy to do and a great chance to keep your face warm during the winter months!” Save lives this December. Grow a beard and raise funds to support our vital services and lifesaving research: bowelcanceruk.org.uk/ decembeard Did you know?: • Bowel cancer is the third most common cancer in men in the UK • 1 in 14 men will be diagnosed with bowel cancer during their lifetime in the UK • More than 23,000 men are diagnosed with bowel cancer in the UK each year • Bowel cancer accounts for 13% of all male cancer cases in the UK

Sussex-based community projects receive grants from Gatwick The latest round of Gatwick Foundation Fund grants have, this week, been announced. Among the winners, to five projects across Sussex that support young people, the elderly or vulnerable and disadvantaged groups, are Age UK Horsham and Crawley, Horsham and Mid Sussex Home-Start. The three other recipients are The Posh Club, Crawley, Crawley Community Youth Service, and East Grinstead Foodbank. Age UK Horsham aims to reduce poverty, loneliness and isolation and improve health and well-being among older people in the Horsham District. Funding enables Age UK to make 200-250 home visits to offer advice and support to older people who may

be vulnerable, housebound or unable to travel. Crawley, Horsham and Mid Sussex Home-Start transforms the life chances of vulnerable local children and families, with trained volunteers providing emotional and practical support. Grant will go towards cost of delivering vital services for disadvantaged families with a child under 5 years. The Fund distributes a total of £300,000 in grants, with the funding split evenly between projects in Sussex, Surrey and Kent, each receiving £100,000 each year. To date, 118 organisations and more than 55,000 people have benefited from the Fund since it was launched late in 2016.

The District Post welcomes new Sales and Promotions Manager Russell Bedford

We would like to welcome Russell Bedford to our team, joining us as promotions and marketing manager Russ is a seasoned veteran in the retail, leisure and hospitality fields. After 7 years of selling books and 15 of hitting strikes he felt it was time for a change, “I had spent all my working life in those two industries and was successful with them, it just felt like time for a change and I’m now stepping into a role I have always had an interest in.” You may recognize Russ from our DPTV videos where he comments on the weekly sporting news, occasionally dressing as a ghost, a medieval reporter or a non dancing unicorn lover. “Davey approached me after I made

some videos for The works book store, they were gaining lots of views and driving sales, weirdly I seemed to be a bit of a natural at it and from then on it all just took off so here I am!” Outside of the working world Russ is a bit of a writer, you may even see some of his musings grace these pages in the future, mainly focusing on football, boxing and Formula one, “I’m a Liverpool fan and despite not being from the area am a very proud red, I was indoctrinated at the age of 7 by my good friend John Kirkham and from then on it could only be the redmen! I go to games when I can, less so these days, but try not to miss a game on TV. With the boxing I’m more of a historical fan and really love the old days of the sport although I’m still quite a geek with the current stuff, and in the F1, its safe to say I am not a Lewis Hamilton fan. Im Renault all the way!” Seeming to be a bit of a well known face in the town Russ hopes that will help him settle into this new role quickly, “Loads of people still seem to remember me as the bowling alley man which is a bit strange as I left there in 2010 but its nice to be recognised for something I was doing quite a while back!”

“Not Now. Not Ever”

CAGNE, Communities Against Gatwick Noise and Emissions, have launched a new campaign to stop Gatwick in their ‘continued efforts to blight the communities of Sussex, Surrey and Kent.’ In a recent statement, the group said: “This has to stop. Gatwick shareholders are using us as pawns in a game of revenue, announcing a master plan for a 3 runway airport as they seek to sell their shares to Canada Pension Investment Plan. What about us? This airport cannot continue to treat the residents of Sussex, Surrey and Kent with such contempt. “This Master Plan is about continuing the blight of these counties for Gatwick’s pursuit of profit. We therefore call upon residents to join us in rejecting the Gatwick Master Plan for a 3 runway airport in West Sussex. It is more than just airport expansion; it is about the enormous increase in noise that is proposed for the people that have no respite today. It is about flying in the face of carbon reductions to save

our planet, concreting over our green space for mass housing and industrial parks, not to mention huge road infrastructure projects that would be needed to support an airport of this size. It would ripe through areas of outstanding natural beauty and the countryside in Sussex, Surrey and Kent,” said Sally Pavey chair of CAGNE, a community umbrella group.” CAGNE offer 3 reasons to reject this Gatwick Airport Master Plan: Reason 1 - Noise. Up to 85,000 extra flights a year, that’s about 230 extra a day over the same people impacted today and that’s just off just 2 runways Reason 2 - Lack of roads and a single railway line, that can’t be expanded, lack of amenities and mass migration of workers due to lack of unemployment in surrounding counties Reason 3 - Obliteration of rural communities, green land, areas of outstanding natural beauty and national parks forever in Sussex, Surrey and Kent due to mass housing and industrial parks Residents have until 5pm on

10 January 2019 to respond to the eleven loaded questions. The Master Plan for a 3 Runway Airport : Runway 1 – Main runway is to be used with modern (satnav) flight technology to increase capacity meaning more planes, more flight paths and more noise! Runway 2 – The emergency runway in conjunction with the main runway with up to 85,000 extra flights over the same people that suffer the severity of Gatwick’s growth currently Runway 3 – A brand new 3rd runway to the south Image: Residents outside the Gatwick Horsham Master Plan event on Saturday (3 November) A subsequent Master Plan event took place on Thursday 8 November at Centrale Shopping Centre, Croydon. Community day at Trafalgar Infant School

On Tuesday 23 October, staff members from across Saxon Weald joined forces to bring a new lease of life to the grounds of Trafalgar Infant School in Horsham, as part of an ongoing series of community projects. Thanks to a generous donation of painting and decorating supplies from Brewers, Horsham, Saxon Weald volunteers were able to transform parts of the school. The biggest change of the day

was the garden. The volunteers worked hard to create an exciting environment for the children to return to after half term, aimed at stimulating their senses, from sight, to smell, to touch. The team were also lucky to enlist the help of Chris Nolan from grounds maintenance specialists Burleys, who dedicated a day to providing expert gardening advice and tackling the school’s overgrown willow structure.

Kat Green, Headteacher at Trafalgar Infant School, said: “We were thrilled to be asked by Saxon Weald if they could carry out a Community Day here at Trafalgar Community Infant School. The 19 Saxon Weald staff worked hard over the half term break, painting, tending to our willow dome, carrying out general maintenance tasks, planting, putting up new blinds in classrooms, amongst other important jobs. The children were excited to see their school looking even brighter and more welcoming when they returned to school from their half term break. “Thank you to Saxon Weald, and their staff, for their time and efforts, and to Saxon Weald for making a financial contribution to the resources needed for this work at a time when school budgets are extremely tight.” A spokesperson for Saxon Weald said: “The day was a great success, and we’d like to say a huge thank you to the volunteers, suppliers and school for making the project possible.”

Demolished dining room at Ewhurst Manor

Council prosecutes for unauthorised works on listed building At Brighton Magistrates Court on Tuesday 16 October, Horsham District Council and Historic England successfully prosecuted a local landowner for carrying out unauthorised works to a Listed Building and Scheduled Monument, which are criminal offences, at Ewhurst Manor in Shermanbury, West Sussex. The owner Mr Lars Vestergaard was convicted and ordered to pay a fine of £22,000 and costs of £60,592. Between 17 September 2014 and 28 November 2014 extensive

unauthorised works were undertaken on the site, including the wholesale stripping of the interior of the house and extensive excavation of the ground beneath the house. Mr Vestegaard was found to have commissioned the work without first obtaining Listed Building Consent and Scheduled Monument Consent. The unauthorised works were offences under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 and the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979.

find us on facebook horsham.news

After Horsham District Council became aware of the work, the council obtained an injunction in the High Court in order to prevent Mr Vestergaard from undertaking any further work whilst an investigation was undertaken to ascertain the harm that had been caused. Horsham District Council and Historic England then worked together to investigate the offences and bring the prosecution. Commenting on the prosecution, Cabinet Member for Planning and Development, Cllr Claire Vickers, said: “I am very pleased with the positive outcome for both the Council and Historic England which I trust will send a clear message that we will use all available enforcement powers to reach effective outcomes in accordance with planning law and the Council’s policies. “The landowner in question knew that the site was protected as a Listed Building and a Scheduled Monument but did not apply for consent to do the works or seek specialist heritage advice prior to those works taking place. His actions caused severe harm to the heritage significance of the site.” Inspector of Ancient Monuments for Historic England in the South East, Paul Roberts, added: “The District Judge found that the owner deliberately ignored legal requirements in order to cut corners and costs. In doing so he committed criminal offences and severely damaged a nationally important historic site. This judgement is a warning to others who might be tempted to disregard the law and risk harming our country’s heritage”. Both organisations will now seek to work with the landowner to secure remedial action that will conserve what is left of Ewhurst Manor’s heritage significance and reinstate the damaged house as far as possible.

horsham museum To mark the centenary of the signing of the Armistice on 11 November 1918, Horsham Museum & Art Gallery have chosen to highlight the story of Roffey Camp. Using contemporary photography, film footage, the camp newspaper, and locally-produced posters, the display aims to highlight the life of the camp and its relationship to the local area. arriving in Horsham. The population of Horsham in 1914 was a mere 11,500, and therefore the addition of 1,500 young men would have been a major event. By early March 1915, work was completed at the new Roffey Camp and the battalion were moved into new, purpose-built accommodation. Roffey Camp stretched from the Norfolk Arms to Forest Road, with the main entrance on Crawley Road. The camp was home to numerous groups of soldiers and remained in use until 1919. The human cost of the First World War was enormous, and is still felt to this day. The photographs and ephemera in the exhibition demonstrate the duality of

the war. Lively, active young men signed up to do their bit for King and Country, with the support of the nation. Gradually, as the reality of the brutal conflict became clear, the joy and national pride so visible in these images began to fade. The First World War serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of war, and the tragedy of these young lives cut short in their prime. Home from Home: Life at Roffey Camp in WWI runs from 6 November 2018 to 19 January 2019 Admission is free of charge. Horsham Museum and Art Gallery is open Monday-Saturday 10am -5pm. What does a Poppy represent? A poem by a Trevor Kirton What does a Poppy represent? A symbol of war, of death and bodies bent? Where rotting flesh blown apart and burned Lays underfoot and all around? A constant symbol of life and death Of renewed hope, of renewed breath From World War 1, and today’s theatres of pain Our human race so loves this game The grievous carnage man has bought Upon his brother with little thought? How could those in power ever sleep Condemning men like slaughtered sheep? The blood, the destruction that ensued Was only bettered by spirit purely imbued As those who fought and those who died We’re often better than those left alive Who relive horrors in wake and sleep Of fallen friends or tears they weep For why someone would lay down their life To save another within a fight? This simple act I cannot comprehend If not your loved ones why choose to end? It is put simply, beyond belief Why one would choose to walk that street? Leaving minds bloodstained and tarnished too Those left behind with fight renewed To avenge ‘their’ fallen laid beside Perhaps not quite friend, yet chose to die To lay down their life, that one might live The bible says “No Greater Gift” So with debtor paid with mortal flesh All those remaining will do their best To forge ahead and win the day Perhaps lay down life in similar way That one or many might survive To rise again, to live their lives But actually doing so with conscious mind Where within oneself this courage find? For it was not there when they left home So where’s it come from now alone? I guess at some point something snaps

And rises up from muddied chaps And even though we may not know It’s born within, for now we go Go forward without fear or doubt Of enemy, bullets, shells about To put themselves within harms way That we might live another day Indomitable Spirit, Courage, Loyalty The traits of battle for so many Whilst not knowing if they’d get back home Or die in sodden field alone Yet driven on, across all terrain Through wind, and sun and snow and rain With single mind, with single aim Defeat the enemy in War’s Great Game A game like chess but with consequence For if you fell from board it is but death But should you win and achieve checkmate You’ll rise again to see new date So does the Poppy symbolise the fallen mass Of those who’ve died? Or does it stand as witness serve That we might remember those with nerve? Or is it because when battle’s done It was the only petal found? That grew in numbers within the field Nourished by blood, of men of zeal? Or does it stand for so much more That we’d all remember those felled in war? “Lest We Forget” the saying goes That we’d not repeat fallen friend nor foes? I guess in truth it stands for much Whether now or past, alive or dust That we might learn, and finally realise That unless we learn, we too will die But we ‘must’ learn or what will be left But embittered pain and suffered death For today it’s woman or man, or child Who stand in trench, upon both sides So where will humanity stand or fall Without the Poppy standing tall Because should we forget all lessons learned We’ll all be doomed, as our planet burns...©

Carnah will use its experience and knowledge to grow the magazines and enable us to concentrate on our Pet Sitting business magazines. Carnah is a well established local magazine publisher and currently publishes the Banstead Beacon, Cheam Clarion, Epsom & Ewell Eagle, Kingswood Village Voice and Tadworth & Walton Tribune. Richard Milbourn, managing director of Carnah, said: “I have been working in

media and publishing for over 30 years since my first job at Reed Publications in Sutton, Surrey. Since I have family in Horsham, I am very excited to be publishing the only magazines in Horsham and Southwater to be delivered door-to-door and will be keen to maintain the community feel of the magazines. “Carnah’s strategy is to publish quality local magazines that serve the local residents and keep everyone informed of local life. The magazines have no political affiliations and are open to anyone in the locality to contribute news, views and articles. There will be gradual improvements in design and content, and I welcome any feedback, comments and suggestions.” Julie Maxted, director of Horsham Publications, said: “In the 10 years since taking over Horsham Publications in 2008, we have grown the business from one magazine to three, and increased circulation from 4,000 to over 28,000 homes and businesses. Carnah will use its experience and knowledge to grow the magazines and enable us to concentrate on our Pet Sitting business.”

Local bathroom specialist seeks nominees for chance to win easy access shower package Horsham bathroom specialist & So To Bathe is giving away a walk in shower area to one person with a particular need for easy access showering. To be in for a chance of winning, a nominee must meet the following criteria: 1) Living with a physical disability or impairment, 2) Reaching an advanced age with mobility an issue. Organisers state that the prize is ‘ideal for someone wanting a “bath out, shower in” renovation, or for someone whose current bathroom layout is causing problems’. The whole package includes an Aqualisa Digital Shower, plus everything needed for a proper frameless shower area (tiles, glass panel, shower tray, tanking system etc.) worth over £2,500. Jim Paddley, owner of & So To Bathe, explained: “This competition is all about giving a little bit back to the Horsham area, which has treated us fabulously for 12 years. We all know someone less fortunate than ourselves, and we’re open to hearing all nominations.”

To nominate a deserving person, entrants must visit the company’s website, andsotobathe. co.uk (andsotobathe.co.uk), and write 200-300 words about why their nominee is worthy of a free accessible shower area. A separate installation fee of £1,999 covers: the removal of a bath or old shower, plumbing and electrical changes, installation of new products and tiling. The & So To Bathe team can recommend one of their trusted installers to start in January, or the winner can use their own fitter.

Billingshurst based director launches new company & tool to help conmpanies ‘discover’ person behind their CV

Frustrated by the limitations of traditional CVs and concerned about the spiralling number of disengaged employees, former recruitment software MD Tim Richards and business psychologist David Royston-Lee have recently launched digital startup Future Resume, providing a revolutionary recruitment tool that allows companies to ‘discover’ the person behind their CV. Designed to replace the need for a first interview, a Future Resume acts as a sophisticated, digital matching tool and provides hiring managers with improved insight about the candidate. This means that they make a more informed decision about who to shortlist and interview, saving a significant amount of time. The carefully-designed ques-

tions in a Future Resume identify potential aspirations, talents and values that show who the candidate is and what they are capable of doing, compared to a CV which simply focuses on past experience and achievements. Richards and Royston-Lee say a better job match also contributes to higher levels of job satisfaction and employee happiness, which can lead to increased productivity and lower staff turnover. The idea took shape after Richards, former MD of leading recruitment software producer Bond International Software, was considering his next career move following the sale of the company. He explained: “Having been in the recruitment software industry for 25 years, the calls I was getting, from recruitment

consultants, focused on my past experience and not what I wanted to do in the future. I was convinced the industry was missing something important because they were looking at me, a potential new employee, in just one dimension - my past. “The current recruitment process is flawed and this results in thousands of people being stuck in the wrong job, being unhappy, unproductive and ultimately having a detrimental effect on both a person’s happiness and the economy. Future Resume can help to change all that.” Richards found a ‘meeting of minds’ with Royston-Lee, who had been working on this issue for some time. Together they created Future Resume, a tool which takes candidates through a series of questions. Royston-Lee said: “What we all really want is to find a job that inspires us, one we feel passionate about, where we want stay, grow and develop. My whole life has been about helping people to find the right job and when I met Tim we realised we were working towards the same goal. Together we want to make it easier for people to recruit the right individuals and for people to be better matched to a job and company culture.” The implications of a disengaged workforce are clear. According to a recent summary of Gallup’s State of the Global Workplace Report , 85 per cent of employees in 155 countries are not engaged (or disengaged) at

work, with a reported economic cost of around $7 trillion in lost productivity. Overall, just 10 per cent of employed residents in Western Europe are engaged — involved in and enthusiastic about their work. And research from management consultancy Hay Group reveals that unmotivated staff in the UK are cutting British productivity by almost half. In its What’s My Motivation? report, employees believe that they would be as much as 45 per cent more productive if they were doing a job they loved. This increase in productivity could be worth up to £340bn added output per year to the UK service sector alone. Just 15 per cent of UK workers polled considered themselves ‘highly motivated’, with as many as a quarter (24 per cent) admitting to ‘coasting’ and a further tenth (8 per cent) being ‘completely demotivated’. Richards and Royston-Lee say the use of Future Resume will also help to address recruitment struggles faced by young people with little or no past work experience and employees recruiting for entry-level jobs. In a McKinsey survey of young people and employers in nine countries, 40 per cent of employers said lack of skills was the main reason for entry-level job vacancies. Using Richards’ and RoystonLees’ approach means recruiters are able to move away from the current keyword search of CVs. The hiring manager logs into their Future Resume account and

creates a new job position. They then invite potential candidates to complete their own Future Resume and both applicant and hiring manager receive a copy. Independent job seekers can also buy and complete a Future Resume for £49.99 (excl. VAT), to be used in conjunction with a CV. Richards said: “We wanted to give job seekers the opportunity to complete their own Future Resume, so they stand out from the crowd when applying for jobs. It also helps them to discover more about themselves, so they can ensure any roles they are considered for are a good match.” The questions, which take candidates around 45 minutes to answer, make the recruitment process faster and more efficient because the recruiter better understands the applicant. The pair say a more effective match of candidate to a job role also means workers will be happier, more engaged and therefore more productive. Before officially launching on October 30, Future Resume was trialled by more than 100 innerLondon students and several businesses. “Feedback so far has been extremely positive”, said RoystonLee, “We’re very excited to see the contribution Future Resume will make, benefiting both the job market, the recruitment industry and the economy.” To find out more watch the video and visit the website at www.futureresume.com

Cinderella In hollywood

A glamorous and innovative production by the award-winning English Youth Ballet Set in the glamorous era of 1950s Hollywood movies, this lavish production draws its inspiration from the film star Grace Kelly who met Prince Rainier of Monaco at a press party and

later married him. Cinderella is a seamstress on a film set and the Fairy Godmother is her late mother - a former movie star of the 1930s. Her wicked sisters are Hollywood starlets competing with each other for starring film roles. The Prince meets Cinderella at the press party but at midnight

she flees from the scene leaving a sparkly silver pointe-shoe as the only clue to her identity. The choreography, design and musical score The choreography has been created by Director Miss Janet Lewis and her team of international principal artists who coach the young dancers. The music combines Shostakovich Jazz Suites and Ballet Suites with memorable melodies from Hollywood films such as Tea for Two, Chinatown and Dancing in the Dark. The stunning new stage designs for the ballet are by Sebastian Petit and the costume designs are by Keith Bish. Highest calibre international principal ballet dancers The professional principal dancers have joined EYB from some of the world’s most renowned ballet companies – including the Royal Ballet, English National Ballet, Northern Ballet Theatre, La Scala and Ballet de Toulouse. British principal dancers include Phillip Tunstall, Julianne Rice-Oxley, Steven Wheeler and Oliver Speers. Monica Tapiodor Moreno-cid is a Spanish principal dancer, Brenden Bratulic is from Australia, Clare Carruble is from France and Samantha Camejo is from Brazil. One of the oldest properties in Mannings Heath now available

Woolmers is one of the oldest properties in Mannings Heath. There is a part of the current house built of stone, which our client informs us is 15th century,

the main part was built in 1590, an oak timber framed Wealden farmhouse. The property is not listed. EPC: E. The present owners purchased

the whole site in 1993, and carried out extensive works to all the buildings. Early 1994 they planted 1500 trees, filling the field between the houseand the

A281, and a 30m strip along the A281, up to Highlands on the southern border. The trees have grown well over the last 20 years, and 50% of the trees planted were oaks, and this already has an abundance of wildlife. In 1995 they put in two lakes, there was already a pond outside the house, which was upgraded, as a koi carp pond, with an automated cleaning system, which feeds the water feature. This is not being used at present, but could easily be reinstated. A working artesian well is pumped into the pond to maintain the level. The tennis court was built in 1995, then overlaid with artificial grass 10 years later, it has retractable halogen floodlights, with permission up to 22.00 hours. The swimming pool, with changing room and snooker room, were built in 2007. The pool is a constant depth pool designed for exercise, with a Heatstar climate control system. The pool building and the pool are highly insulated, the Heatstar automatically controls the water and air temperatures, also the humidity and reclaims the heat, so together with an insulating electric pool cover, the pool is economic, with minimal maintenance. The water is kept clean by cartridge filters and UV light, with minimal chemicals needed. Horsham Ladies win well in north London Saturday November 3 – Investec Women’s League – Conference East Southgate Ladies 2 3 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Ladies notched up their second win of the season - at Snakes Lane, Barnet after being

a goal down, then leading at the break and going on to win relatively comfortably. Southgate drew first blood from a field goal after the ball had come into the D, Horsham Captain, goalkeeper Hannah Jackson, was jostled, but the goal stood. Then, Horsham’s Naomi Kelly converted two short corners with drag flicks, both dropped by the home keeper,

giving Horsham a 2-1 advantage at the break. Horsham’s Emily Smith told the District Post: “We went 3-1 up in the second half after Louisa Denman ran round three of the opposition players and was fouled, CJ White scoring from the penalty spot. Southgate pulled back an open play goal, which was scrambled in towards the end, but we

had a short corner right on the final whistle. We played well today and deserved to win!” Horsham’s South African signing, Isabella de Rocha – just returned from a two week tournament in her homeland - added: “The standard is higher here and its great playing with the Horsham girls – they gave me a big welcome and we’ve settled down well together as a team.”

On Saturday seventh-placed Horsham – on level points with St Albans, just above them on goal difference – travel to Cambridge City (third). Harleston Magpies top the league from Hampstead and Westminster while Southgate are in the penultimate berth, ahead of beleaguered Ipswich, who have yet to score a goal and are awaiting their first point.

Horsham’s Will Beer delighted with another Sussex contract Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham’s Will Beer – Sussex’s all-time leading T20 wicket taker - is delighted to have signed a new contract with the county. Will has been firmly on Sussex’s radar for 20 years, beginning when he led the county’s under 10 side. 30 year old Will went on to cut his teeth at Horsham Cricket Club – following in the footsteps of both his father Andy and his uncle, Robin – and still plays for the town side whenever his Sussex commitments allow. Leg-spinner Will, a rare commodity in today’s game, has made 174 first team performances in all formats, with approaching 200 wickets and over 1,000 runs in addition to captaining the 2nd XI on numerous occasions. After progressing through county age group cricket, Will impressed for England U19s, taking 10 economical wickets against New Zealand. Also in 2009, he came to the fore with a gutsy performance on T20 finals day, helping Sussex to lift the trophy, and, this season, in Sussex’s final, he took 2-32 against Worcestershire, having also bowled well in the Quarter Final versus Durham. In the season before last in an all too rare appearance in the longer game, Will took 6-29 against the South African tourists at Arundel. Speaking of his new contract, right hand bat Will said: “I’m really thrilled to be signing a

new contract with the club. I have never been as excited to be a Sussex player as I am now and this is testament to the environment that has been created over the past year. 2018 was a great stepping stone to an even better season next year, when hopefully we can reward the Sussex faithful with a trophy or two. On a personal level, last season was full of ups and downs with injury preventing me from playing a part in the 50 over campaign, but representing Sussex in the T20 final has to be a highlight and I am looking forward to contributing towards winning matches for Sussex in 2019!” This year Will won Sussex’s Team Man of the Year award, the citation saying: “Although Will’s first team opportunities have been limited, he has

never let the team down with either bat or ball whenever called upon – he always puts the needs of the team above everything else and in an injury-interrupted season, he is commended for his demeanour around the dressing room, his unfailing willingness to help his teammates with their preparation, and for consistently going above and beyond what is expected of him.” Sussex Head Coach Jason Gillespie sums up with: “It’s great to have Beero re-sign with the club. Although opportunities were a bit limited for him this year with injury and the make-up of the side, his attitude around the team was outstanding, and when he did play he stepped up and did a fine job and we look forward to seeing him push for more opportunities in the first team in 2019.”

Horsham completed their fifth consecutive win in style, yet lowly Aylesford made the early running, leaving Horsham trailing at the break. But, in a dynamic second half,

Depleted Boro set back by resurgent Folkestone Saturday November 3 – London 3 South East Folkestone 47 12 Pulborough Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter After a strong win versus Hastings and Bexhill the previous week, Pulborough suffered their heaviest defeat of the season, against Folkestone last Saturday, the Kent side’s third win following a poor start to the season. Folkestone are something of a bogey opponent for Boro – especially in Kent, where the hosts have won all six of the previous encounters. Folkestone got over the line just four minutes into the game and then added a further converted try to lead 14-0, Boro responding with a try of their own, Ollie Coombe-Tenant intercepting and getting over, duly converted. With Boro defending tigerishly, a Folkestone penalty was denied by the posts, but after keeping the Kent side at bay they finally broke through for two maximised tries, interspersed by being thwarted by the woodwork again. Two more Folkestone

tries, one converted, put the result beyond all doubt, but Boro kept pushing and were rewarded with the try of the match – ten players running and passing down the length of the field, culminating in what Head Coach Clayton Saunders described as: “A fantastic team try.” Folkestone, though, were not done, their final try, with the kick, enabling them to win by a commanding 47-12, Saunders telling the District Post: “With 12 players missing from the week before it was always going to be a tough ask against a side that we have never beaten away! We have three more games left before the half way mark of the season (eighth-placed Bromley – who we welcome on Saturday 17th after a break this weekend - followed by Old Dunstonians and Old Williamsonians). If we can win those then I’m sure that we’ll be in the hunt for promotion going into the second half of the season. We’re fourth now and it’s going to be a close table with no less than five clubs pushing for second place behind current league leader Crowborough.”

Horsham shaded amid Eastbourne controversy

Horsham’s unanswered 43 points enabled them to inflict a heavy defeat on their Kentish hosts. Horsham started tentatively amid Aylesford domination, but were first on the scoreboard with a Tom Blewitt try, converted by Joe Wilde. An Aylesford penalty reduced the deficit and although they missed another kick, a try followed, with a further penalty giving them an 11-7 lead at half time.

Re-energised, Horsham restarted with more urgency and physicality, and, aided by more efficient ball carrying, they went ahead in the 50th minute, courtesy of a Jack Osgood try, maximised by Wilde. From then on, it was all Horsham – Chris Double getting over, unconverted, before the Green & Whites increased their lead with a Johnny Whiting try, Wilde kicking successfully. A spirited Horsham build up culminated in Osgood’s second try, providing a 33-11 advantage, followed by Declan Nwachukwu surging across the line and Will Johnson adding a further five points, before Nwachukwu put the icing on the cake with a final try, which, together with an earlier conversion, brought up Horsham’s half century. Horsham Coach Richard Bell said: “If ever there was a game of two halves, this was it – once Horsham got over the game line momentum shifted in our favour. Jack Osgood was undoubtedly Man of the Match, carrying well and tackling with equal gusto. Our defence ultimately proved untenable for Aylesford.” Now second behind Beckenham, Horsham visit Hurlingham Park to take on Hammersmith & Fulham – currently seventh in the equivalent London 2 NW League - in the RFU’s Intermediate Cup this Saturday, before returning to league action on November 17 with a key home game against Dover (4th).

Saturday November 3 – Hockey - South League – Premier – Division 2 Eastbourne 4 3 Horsham Men’s 1st XI Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham were edged out of a close encounter at the Saffrons after trailing 1-0 at half time, following a home goal against the run of play just before the break, Team Manager Al Campbell saying: “For the second week running Horsham were the better side without getting a point. This game hinged on a hugely controversial umpiring call, after which tempers frayed and Horsham didn’t do themselves justice. Until that point it was a fantastic game of hockey. The first half was extremely cagey, both sides playing clever hockey, Horsham with the better of the chances. Our defence has sorted itself out, managing the backfield well, while Freddie Campbell, Chas Richardson, Rob Turnbull and Man of the Match Ed Marsh controlled the midfield. The six second half goals were most unexpected!” Eastbourne, though, went two up soon after the restart and Horsham were depleted when an injury to Tim Upchurch reduced their minimal squad to just 12 players: yet, they equalised through a

close range Sam Gill goal and a Sean Pearcy short corner – his seventh goal of the season – before Eastbourne re-took the lead against the tiring visitors. Eastbourne then burst through to score again when they were awarded a hit despite Horsham’s Turnbull being felled. Horsham frustration led to yellow cards, and although Zak Chinn subsequently scored, time ran out with Horsham on top. Former Horsham Chairman Nick Evans making a comeback in goal after a very lengthy break told the District Post: “This was a good, even game and we created as many chances as Eastbourne. We played really well, with fluency and confidence, earning seven short corners compared with their three. It was a very enjoyable game, even though all of the other players were at least 20 years younger than me! There’s nothing quite like playing first team hockey and I’m hoping to be back in the side against Trojans on Saturday (at Christ’s Hospital, 11.30am), pending former East Grinstead keeper Jack Egerton’s recovery from his long term injury.” Southampton based Trojans have won four of their six games and are currently second behind Guildford. In a tightly bunched mid and lower table, Horsham are 10th, shaded by Blackheath & Elthamians on goal difference. Slough, so far without a point, are bottom, just below Woking.

Horsham snatch four points from Kent trips

Photo by John Lines The Bostik League – South East Division Tuesday October 30 – Ramsgate 0 0 Horsham Saturday November 3 – Ashford United 2 3 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter On the first of their visits to Kent in the space of five days, following a hat trick of wins, Horsham had to settle for a draw – their first in the league this season, the long midweek trip to Ramsgate ending in stalemate. The Hornets, though, started brightly on the cold night at the Southwood Stadium, Charlie Harris shooting wide before Tyrell Richardson-Brown, Rob O’Toole and Chris Smith all tested the home defence, Smith coming closest in the 36th minute, only to see his effort cruelly diverted away. Ramsgate also had a chance, but ballooned over. Horsham again started well

in the second half, but were unable to maximise opportunities, Smith hitting the bar from close range and subsequently getting the ball in the net, only to be denied by an offside call before Steve Metcalf’s cannonball shot was pushed round the post. Smith then fired wide and Jack Brivio’s header was also off target, time evaporating with Horsham negating Rams’ set pieces and regretting being unable to fulfil the favourable situations created. Horsham’s new signing, Nassim Dukali debuted after impressing Manager Dom Di Paola against the Hornets last season – the much-travelled midfielder has had previous experience with Dulwich Hamlet, Egham Town, Greenwich Borough, Guildford City, Herne Bay, Lewes and Thamesmead Town. Against Ashford United at the Homelands Stadium last Saturday Horsham grabbed a dramatic win in the 96th minute after going two nil down early in the game. Ashford had not tasted victory for

nine games in any format, but were in the driving seat after Danny Parish and Sam Corne had both scored from breakaways by the mid point of the first half – Parish with a header and Corne from close range – after Horsham’s Jack Brivio had been unable to convert George Hayward’s supply. Brivio went through again to no avail, before Ashford had a great chance to bury the game, but Horsham negated the dangerous debutant Parish to trail 2-0 at the break. Both sides pushed hard on the restart – Tyrell Richardson-Brown shooting wide and George Hayward finding the crossbar for Horsham, but the Hornets didn’t have too much longer to wait – Chris Smith reducing the deficit with a left foot curler well out of reach of Sam Mott in the home goal. Then, ten minutes before the scheduled end, Richardson-Brown burst through and unleashed a cracker to level the score. Surely even Horsham’s fighting spirit couldn’t conjure a further three points after being two goals down – as they had already done twice this term? The question was soon answered: Ashford missed another golden opportunity, Horsham keeper Josh Pelling thwarting them, until with just a few seconds of the seven minutes of added time remaining, Richardson-Brown broke Ashford hearts with a well taken close quarter goal, moving Horsham up to seventh. On Saturday Horsham are back in cup action at Lancing, hosting Potters Bar Town in the FA Trophy 2nd Qualifying Round. Meanwhile, Horsham First Team Coach Jon Meeney has moved on after finding that his other escalating coaching commitments have made it impossible for him to devote sufficient time to the Hornets.

Heath frustrated in two home encounters Southern Combination Football League Premier Division Saturday October 27 - Broadbridge Heath 2 3 AFC Uckfield Town Saturday November 3 – Broadbridge Heath 1 1 Arundel Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter A last minute Uckfield goal denied Broadbridge Heath, just when the game seemed destined for a draw. Honours were even – one apiece – at the break after Devon Fender had put Heath ahead in the 25th minute, only for Uckfield to promptly level the score. Tim Rivers restored Heath’s lead a quarter of an hour into the second half, but Heath had been reduced to 10 men when Marlon Maxwell was sent off after collecting two yellow cards. Then, Uckfield reclaimed parity in the 81st minute before the visitors grabbed all three points with a Matthew Maclean goal four minutes into extra time. Against struggling Arundel last Saturday, Heath made all of the early running, George Cousins unleashing a curler before Devon Fender hit the crossbar from one of Heath’s three corners in the first 10 minutes. Cousins’ shot cum cross was then put just over by a sliding Tim Rivers, until, against the run of play, Arundel hit the post and had two corners, both squandered with wayward kicks. Fender then embarked on a solo run, but fired straight at the Arundel keeper, followed by Heath’s fourth corner. Arundel immediately broke away, the woodwork rescuing Heath. But,

the lively Cousins was continuing to put Arundel under pressure, a Max Howell volley earned another Heath set piece and Rivers burst through, then, five minutes before the break, Heath, enjoying the vast majority of possession, headed wide. Yet, they conceded the lead just before the whistle, Arundel’s soft goal trickling over the line in a goal mouth melee. Resuming, after Fender had left the field with an ankle injury, Heath substitute Ollie Moore blasted wide. Arundel then scooped over, but Heath drew level after Jamie Robinson was floored and the ball was scrambled in from close range by Rivers, 13 minutes into the second half. Arundel immediately responded but Heath kept pushing, Moore’s strike being booted off the line by a defender and Cousins’ hooked attempt going just wide after another Heath corner. Two more Heath corners followed and a strong shot was cleared - so many chances were being created but neither side could get the ball in the net. Endless stoppages resulted in a late finish after the referee had to quell fractious outbursts from the dugouts, a send off from the bench resulting. With 5pm approaching in very dim light, Arundel had a corner before a last ditch Heath attack and corner were somehow kept out, leaving the sides to share the points and rue many missed opportunities. This Saturday, Broadbridge Heath – now 9th – remain at the Leisure Centre to welcome 16th-placed Hassocks.

Good and bad results for Horsham YMCA Saturday November 3 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Langney Wanderers 0 2 Horsham YMCA Tuesday November 6 - Parafix Sussex Senior Challenge Cup Horsham YMCA 1 3 Little Common Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Against Langney Wanderers last Saturday Horsham YMCA found themselves up against well organised and determined opponents, but Tony Garrod opened the scoring for YM on 12 minutes from the edge of the penalty area. YM subsequently had the bulk of possession but failed to convert the chances presented, a fierce Jack Hartley strike into the side netting being their closest attempt, until he did manage to score, heading home Guy Harding’s pinpoint cross, giving YM a two goal cushion at the break. YM continued attacking during the second half, a powerful header

from Callum Donaghey being well saved by the Langney keeper and substitute Sam Schaaf’s close range effort avoiding the goal, the game ending 2-0 in YM’s favour, Ben Godfrey deputising in the absence of unwell Manager Peter Buckland, telling the District Post: “We put in a very disciplined performance, restricting Langney to very few chances – they’ve brought in some good players and will definitely be moving up the table as the season progresses.” On Tuesday evening in the Sussex Senior Cup YM upset their supporters with a disappointing performance against Little Common, who, in the league, are 15th with four wins from 13 starts, whereas YM are second with 10 successes. But, games are played on grass, not paper, and, while YM had the lion’s share of possession and eight corners, they created very few clearcut chances and had to concede that, against all expectations, they were beaten by a more enterprising team on the night. Early YM corners on the left and right were followed by another, but Little

Common opened the scoring in the 30th minute when, in a rare attack, Jamie Crone broke through on the right and fired home with YM keeper Aaron Jeal prostrate. At the other end Luke Gedling unfurled a screamer that whistled over the bar before Sam Ellis doubled the visitors’ lead, crashing the ball into inviting space in the goal. A minute later Dean Bown found the net, the score remaining 1-2 at the break despite two more YM corners and five more missed scoring opportunities. The second half began with Bown heading wide and a goal line YM free kick being scrambled away before Mark Cave was upended in the area without sanction. YM substitutions did not herald a change in fortune as another corner evaporated, and opportunities created went unfulfilled with YM looking unthreatening. Wave after wave of YM forays were negated by the resolute Little Common defence, until, on the break the visitors hit the bar with a cannonball strike. Then, with just a minute of full time remaining, YM were committed to attack, depriving them

of defensive cover, and Jeal rushed out to clear but the ball was kicked straight at Crone, who skirted the keeper and fired into the open goal. There was still time for two more YM incursions, but their Sussex Senior Cup journey shuddered to a

desultory end for this season. Hoping to quickly expunge the memory of this discouraging defeat, YM revert to league action on Saturday with a home game against 12thplaced AFC Uckfield Town.
