Magic of Christmas returns with community funded tree You don’t have to spend much time in Horsham to realise what hot topics the Christmas decorations and, in particular, the absence of a Christmas tree are. This year, for the first time in many years Horsham Town Centre will have a real Christmas Tree. This is thanks to a group of local businesses, traders and individuals, who realised how popular previous trees were and how sorely missed they are. The 25 foot tall cut Norway Spruce, is set to be hung with lights and baubles and will look stunning next to the Stocks opposite Swan Walk. It is hoped the tree will boost footfall for all local businesses and enhance the Christmas feel in town in the run up to the big day, but as we all know Christmas isn’t just about rejoicing

and having a good time, it is also about remembering and thinking of others. The organisers would like the tree to be a springboard for a major public charitable donation campaign supporting St Catherine’s Hospice, Chestnut Tree House and Age UK – Horsham District. Every individual making a donation will have their name printed on the panels attached to the picket fence at the base of the tree. The intention is that donators will come to look for their names and take photographs. Horsham District Council is encouraging local people, who are concerned about keeping their homes warm this winter, to apply for a Warm Home Discount. The Warm Home Discount forms part of a government scheme giving eligible households £140 discount off their electricity bills. People who receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit should get the Warm Home Discount automatically. Their energy company will contact them directly to confirm. People who don’t qualify automatically, and are on a low income or receive other means tested benefits, can ring their electricity supplier and apply for the discount which should be credited to electricity accounts by the end of March 2019. Cllr Tricia Youtan, Cabinet Member for Community and Wellbeing, said: “Now that it

is becoming colder, people are already turning up their heating and may be starting to worry about the cost of their energy bills. “I would urge people who are interested in applying for the Warm Home Discount to contact their energy supplier as soon as possible, as there is a limited amount of money available.” People using pre-payment meters, or “pay as you go” meters can also request a Warm Home Discount from their energy company. Unfortunately, it is not currently available to people living in Park Homes. The Warm Home Discount is different from the winter fuel payment, which all people of pensionable age receive. On Tuesday 20 November, a number of talented chefs from The Towers and Steyning Grammar competed in the Rotary Masterchef Competition. Pupils had two hours to prepare a three-course meal on a budget – quite a challenge! The standard of

the food was extremely high and its superb presentation made it all the more mouth-watering. Taylor H and Amelie Lyne (both in Yr8) kept cool and calm and were commended for their delicious food - definitely future contestants for the real thing!

Ultra keen Gary takes on new challenge for his 40th

Gary’s 30th challenge News Martin Read - Reporter Some people start to ease up when important birthday milestones beckon – but not Gary Marlow – he’s got his foot on the accelerator with an extremely challenging list of activities to complete. But, Gary just loves setting himself the most testing demands with contests that others would find too daunting to contemplate. Turning 30 Gary undertook 30 challenges and in 2012 he became a World Record Holder with Crawley Hockey Club, playing for 36 hours, which he followed up with a Spine Race and the National Three Peaks. More recently he has done the Yorkshire Peaks Ultra, 70km, and the South to North 93km and last weekend he tuned up with the local Hurtwood 50K. But, these events plus some long runs and mountain training are just to improve fitness to tackle the 268 mile Spine Race – part of the Ultra Series of exceptionally demanding endurance events designed to really push contestants - and known as Britain’s most brutal race. Next May Gary will undertake the Berghaus Dragon Back – described as the

world’s toughest 5 day mountain running race, followed by the Cape Wrath 400km race starting in Scotland’s Fort William onto remote tracks to the furthest northwesterly point of mainland Britain, with towering mountains on one side and the crashing ocean on the other, Gary explaining: “To mark my 40th year I’ll be attempting to become one of the very few people in the UK to have a crack at those three Ultras, among the world’s very toughest – its my strange way of celebrating with an inspiring journey in an 18 month programme! “ Gary gives up much of his spare time for various causes, including Horsham’s life saving Community Responders. He volunteers as a Governor for Leechpool Primary School and supports with a variety of other activities and events in the district. And, just for good measure, he runs Marlow Sports and their Woods for Learning programme, saying: “We take an educational approach to outdoor play and learning and its great to co-ordinate with schools, scouts and guides to inspire kids to get outside to discover, explore, play and learn in a woodland environment, and its particularly rewarding to work with charities

to help develop kids with a range of disorders and disabilities.” Enthusiastic feedback from Gary’s events includes: “Really well organised – a great range of activities, will definitely come to future events!” – “Mum, this is the best experience ever!” – “How blessed we are in Horsham to have this amazing experience available – my two children loved it and had a great time!” and “10 ++++” To defray some of Gary’s Ultra Challenge expenses he would be very pleased to hear from any local business willing to support him, in return for which he offers one of his comprehensive and celebrated Corporate Team Building days free of charge – focusing on outdoor learning, survival techniques and orienteering, building both individual and team skills, highlighted on social media. Tap to pay and you’re on your way: Metrobus goes contactless

No more fumbling for change or bus passes, passengers can now pay for tickets on Metrobus and Brighton & Hove Buses using contactless cards and phones.

Passengers just need to tap their phones or bank cards on the ticket machine when they get on the bus: face down for cards, face up for phones.

Local children’s charities to benefit from proceeds of council sponsored book

Three local charities are going to benefit from the proceeds of the sales of a newly published book featuring stories written by two local children, who were winners of a Horsham District Council story writing competition, this week. Horsham District Council launched a children’s story writing competition, challenging local children to write a short story about Horsham Town Centre and Horsham Park, involving the Townies and Parkies animal characters, which are captured on new wall murals in the town’s

Albion Way underpass. The book went on sale on Saturday (24 November) at the Council’s Museum and Art Gallery, Waterstones Horsham, and Horsham Library, and the charities who will benefit from the proceeds raised by sales are Chestnut Tree House, Springboard Project and Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charities. The winner of the 5-9 years category was Conor Winspear (aged 8) with his story ‘Badger’s Bumblebee Birthday Cake’. The winner of the 10-13 years category was Nyah Hawkes (aged

13) with her story ‘The Circus Comes to Town’. Local artist, Katie Wells, illustrated the books, featuring the Townies and Parkies animals which originally featured on the town’s new wall murals and became well known to families during the summer through a series of town and park trails. The young winning authors hosted a book signing in Waterstones bookshop in Horsham on Saturday and were surprised with a presentation of framed original illustrations from their stories by Katie. Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Jonathan Chowen, said: “Many congratulations to the winning authors and talented illustrator who really brought the animal characters to life and highlighted our town centre and park so well. “The whole project has been a great success, bringing our town and park to life for people, and creating a great little book to raise money for local charities. I would encourage as many of you as possible to buy a copy as soon as you can as stocks are limited.” Fresh panels featuring new characters have now been installed in the Albion Way underpass to reflect the winter. Do check them out if you are walking between the town and the park. These activities promoting Horsham Town Centre and Horsham Park were organised by Horsham District Council with Horsham town’s branch of Waterstones, Maverick Publishing, and West Sussex Library Service. Before Fifty-year-old Jane Burse, from Horsham, is celebrating losing five stone, and getting her life back after a hard battle with MS. Jane decided to join WW in January of this year and has gone on to change her relationship with food for good. Jane recalled the moment she decided that she would change her lifestyle: “I’ve always been a yo-yo dieter, but have never had the drive or will-power to really get to where I want to be; I’ve just never been in the right head space. But in 2011, my life changed and, overnight, I lost the use of my legs; this was the start of a life-changing moment, which lead to me being diagnosed

My life went into a downward spiral and, as I continued to battle with my weight and activity levels, I became very depressed.” Following from diagnosis, Jane was prescribed large amount of medication over the years, and says that this, combined with her acquiring a mobility scooter, was the perfect mix for weight gain: “I used my medication as an excuse, and as my mobility was bad, I found it hard to motivate myself to exercise. This was compounded even further when I got my mobility scooter – it gave me my independence back and enabled me to get back out into the community, but did nothing for my weight!” Jane’s weight continued to go up, until the end of 2017 when she say’s she had a ‘light-bulb moment’ about what she was doing with her life: “I seriously thought about it and had a word with myself and following a holiday to Iceland for my fiftieth birthday where I struggled to put my seatbelt on, I really started to realise what I was doing to myself.” Jane joined the WW Broadfield

Studio in January and at the workshop, she learnt new healthy eating habits whilst still enjoying her food. She explained: “I knew it was now or never. The WW programme really works and I’ve been able to keep my motivation going – now I’m in the right frame of mind it’s so much easier. The WW programme means I’m able to eat real food without feeling guilty, and I love tracking on the WW app and using the barcode scanner.” WW isn’t just about a number on a scale, and as well as losing five stone, Jane says that the greatest benefit of losing weight is being able to manage her MS: “My MS has settled and my activity has actually increased. I can walk between 5000 and 10,000 steps a day and I’ve also started yoga which helps with my wellness and mental health. As for my scooter? It’s now been dismantled and stays in the garden shed – I don’t need it now and I’m confident I won’t need it again any time soon.” Throughout her journey, Jane has been supported by her Wellness Coach, Sharon Ashborn, who said: “I am incredibly proud of Jane. It’s been lovely to watch her grow in confidence and get her life back. As she continues to attend my workshops, I will keep supporting and encouraging her to continue with the fantastic work she’s done so far to ensure she will stay on track and take control of her goals for good.” When asked what advice she would give to anybody else wanting to improve their health and wellbeing, Jane said: “It’s not just about numbers, it’s about changing your life to be happy!” Visit www.weightwatchers.com/ uk to find out about other WW Studios in your area.

Santa’s speedy arrival at Newbridge Nursery Santa has turned up at Newbridge Nursery, arriving in an immaculate blue E Type Jag, (the reindeer were having the day off, saving their energy for the Big Day on Christmas Eve!) In the space of a few hours, Santa was able to see 200 children, who all went away with a present, having been able to tell Santa how good they had been, and what they were hoping to get this Christmas. The Grotto this year is a replica of Charlie’s Chocolate Factory, complete with a liquid chocolate waterfall and river, a Sweet Shop and Willy Wonka’s ‘half office’ there are also a couple of Umpa Lumpas and everyone gets a Lucky Draw ticket! Santa will be returning to his grotto at the Nursery every

weekend in December, from 10.30am to 4,30pm, and on December 20, 21 and Christmas Eve from 11.00am to 3.00pm. £6 per child and all proceeds will go to Chestnut Tree House, our local Children’s Hospice, A virtual queueing system is in use, to allow you to shop while waiting your turn to see Santa. Getting ‘Bike Smart’ for Road Safety Week Last month (week commencing 19 November) was National Road Safety Week and the theme of ‘Bike Smart’ focused on keeping pedal cyclists and motor cyclists safe on our roads. Horsham District Council’s Neighbourhood Warden teams got involved with the campaign by running Different initiatives in each of their areas. The wardens for Pulborough Parish visited St Mary’s Primary School, Pulborough to talk to the children who regularly cycle to school about road safety, wearing crash helmets and ensuring they are seen on the roads. They handed out glow in the dark accessories for the children and security marking stickers for their bikes. The wardens also engaged with the parents to ensure everyone was aware of the importance of road safety and handed out glow badges to children who walk to and from school. The wardens for the unparished areas of Horsham held a street briefing session at Horsham train station and took along UV marker

pens and safety leaflets and raised awareness of the recent bike thefts and preventative measures. The Billingshurst Parish wardens handed out free lights to children who were out on their bikes or scooters in the dark and chatted to them about being seen and staying safe. Horsham District Council’s Cabinet Member for Community and Wellbeing, Tricia Youtan, commented: “I am really pleased that our Neighbourhood Wardens have got behind this major national safety campaign by getting out and about in our towns and villages and bringing it to life for local people. “They have provided practical solutions to residents of all ages and circumstances to help keep them safe over the darker winter months.” Cyclists and motorcyclists are among the most vulnerable road users in the UK, with more than 100 riders injured every day in needless, preventable crashes. Organisers are are proud to announce that they were successful in securing the Guinness World RecordTM for the Largest Beer Tasting (across multiple venues). On Thursday 29 November, 1264 people sampled three of Brewhouse & Kitchen’s craft beers at the same time, overseen by Guinness World RecordsTM adjudicators, in an event that took place across the nation. Independent pub group Brewhouse & Kitchen had been, for the last few weeks, calling on the craft beer fans and pub-lovers alike to support them in their attempt for the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDTM of the Largest Beer

Tasting (across multiple venues), and the fans did not disappoint. After selling the Five Oaks enterprise the family went on to operate at Codmore Hill and when that was sold, in 2000 I started Kevin Griffin Cars at what was Hurst Court Garage. The front part of the premises was sold in 2004 but we kept the main workshop which had entry from Nightingale Road, since when we have continued to develop the business,

Mannings Heath Golf Club Captains Raise £9,000 for Alzheimer’s Society and Parkinson’s UK charities

Golfers at Mannings Heath Golf and Wine estate, in Horsham in West Sussex, have raised £9,000 for charity. Past club captains, Roger Bridge and Mary Grange, presented two cheques for £4,500 each to the Alzheimer’s Society and Parkinson’s UK charities on 14 November The money raised was mainly from two auctions, achieved with prizes donated by club members, as well as vouchers to play at other local golf clubs, which they generously donated. Horsham District young entrepreneurs hit Horsham town on Small Business Saturday to trade local On 1 December, Small Business Saturday, young people from schools across Horsham and Mid Sussex braved wet conditions to be part of the Christmas markets organised by Food Rocks South in Horsham’s Carfax. The Young Enterprise Trade Fair, which is held in Horsham Carfax each year, is a chance for young business companies to sell their products and make a success of their businesses. Students from Horsham’s Millais and Collyer’s College, and from Mid Sussex’s Imberhorne School and Hurstpierpoint College, battled it out for Best Trade Fair Company, with Collyer’s College winning on the day. The winning company is called STIX, and they were selling their own design mobile phone charger plug ID stickers to prevent family arguments over who owns which charger. The other companies were

selling a variety of products, ranging from Eco friendly bottles to wax candles in antique teacups, and from a healthy eating online food magazine to decorated dream jars. Despite an early soaking as the companies prepared their stalls, all students showed resilience and enthusiasm in setting up their stands. The Trade Fair competition, judged by local business owner, Sharon Walker of Cakes by Sharon Walker, is part of a bigger competition nationally, with Young Enterprise having helped young people develop their entrepreneurial skills for over 50 years. The companies were judged on the design and presentation of their stand, their knowledge of the business, quality and originality of their products, and their customer handling skills. Commenting on the trading day, Horsham District Council Cabinet member for the Local Economy

Cllr Gordon Lindsay said: “I was delighted that so many young business people turned out in Horsham’s busy town centre on Saturday, particularly as it was Small Business Saturday, which is such an important trading day for our many small independent businesses in and around Horsham. “My congratulations go out to the young traders from Young Enterprise and I am pleased they had such a successful day. “Many of our local businesses have come from this background

and they can vouch for the benefits the Young Enterprise programme provides for local schools and their students. “Thank you to everyone who came along to shop local on the day.” Sharon Walker found it difficult to decide on an outright winner: “This year’s trade fair was of the highest standard and the most difficult to judge by far. Each company scored highly in different areas and I was particularly impressed with the commitment by students to

environmental awareness.” The winning team won £50 to reinvest in their company. All companies now have Christmas to prepare for the next phase of the competition; the Dragon’s Den style Board presentations towards the end of January, which will be held at Horsham District Council’s offices. The area finals will be held on 20 March and the winner of the best company will go through to the county finals soon after. The whole competition culminates in a national final in the summer.

Slinfold school receives £250 from Henry Adams The children and staff at Slinfold Primary School were presented with a cheque for £250 from Henry Adams in Horsham on Wednesday 21 November. The donation followed the successful sale of a vendor’s house as part of a collaboration with the residential sales team at Henry Adams Horsham office. Residential manager, Nick Hapgood, said, “We were delighted to present this cheque to Slinfold school as part of our scheme to support local primary schools which are so important and lie at the heart of all our communities.”

Henry Adams residential sales team are offering to donate £250 to the primary school of a vendor’s choice on the successful sale of their property. Nick adds, “The scheme has proved very popular as vendors can direct the donations to the primary school of their choice. We’ve found it to be especially of interest in the lead up to Christmas which is traditionally a good time to get your property valued ready for the busy period between Christmas and New Year when people often start browsing for properties and making plans for their new year move.”

Digital art project celebrates 40 Years of Raymond Briggs’ The Snowman

Fans of The Snowman were invited to upload photographs of their fondest festive memories or moments from the past 40 years to form this giant tribute piece titled My Snowman, to commemorate the landmark anniversary of original picture book. My Snowman opened at Brighton Museum on December 4 and will run until January 6, to complement the existing exhibition of Raymond Briggs’ original artwork. A digital version of the mosaic will also launch online, allowing participants to zoom in and find their own photograph. In the lead up to the exhibition opening, Izzy Richardson, Head of Brand for The Snowman, said: “Creating a unique piece of artwork made up of photographs from members of the public is an incredible way to pay tribute to Raymond Briggs’ beloved Snowman in the anniversary year. We have been absolutely thrilled

with the response to this project; to see so many magical memories shared by Snowman fans already is demonstrative of the intrinsic role The Snowman plays in our festive traditions every year, and some of the stories shared have been extremely touching. We cannot wait to share the final piece!” Helen Marshall, Founder of The People’s Picture, said: “I have really enjoyed seeing everybody’s submissions roll in one by one for My Snowman! The pictures as a whole reveal the full range of human emotion, expressing love, loss, and celebration, which are the ultimate themes of The Snowman story. Some of the pictures also have stories that are compelling and important.” The artwork will be gifted to Raymond’s charity of choice, Chestnut Tree House, to be auctioned off as part of their annual festive fundraising initiative.

Sleeping Beauty at the Capitol

As opening night approaches for this year’s pantomime at The Capitol, the cast and the creative team for Sleeping Beauty can’t wait to bring the Christmas magic to the stage. Natasha Hoeberigs who plays Princess Aurora is incredibly excited! Originally from Sydney, Australia and having grown up in New Zealand, Natasha admits she never saw any pantomimes as a child. “Coming here, it’s like wow!

You’ve got this amazing show that happens annually... it’s such a nice ritual to have! I just feel really lucky that I can be involved in it now, as an adult!” Suiting up to make everyone laugh, James Fletcher is back to play Lester The Jester. When asked to explain how he feels about panto, he laughs “Oh it’s fantastic! It’s just a lot of fun and a lot of silliness; you are essentially sprinkling Christmas magic over

everyone who sees you. It feels like it’s Christmas every single day and it’s just very nice to be part of that, the buzz that you get from it is high.” More than a traditional tale of good triumphing over evil, this story of a cursed young girl, brought up by the family nursemaid, who sleeps for 100 years before being woken by true love’s kiss, is a roller-coaster ride through time, emotion, laughter and song! Containing many a reference to good morals and behaviour, the story of Sleeping Beauty will appeal to all ages. By Phil Dennett The Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra’s 500th concert was as much about people like supporter Ted McFadyen as it was a celebration of a musical milestone. As a Beethoven fan, former journalist Ted would have been delighted at the orchestra’s wonderful performance of the composer’s engaging Seventh Symphony at the Brighton Dome on Sunday. Loyal Ted had been a “Friend” of the orchestra for 30 years and was from time to time a patron of the orchestra and sponsor of concerts, playing a vital role in their continuation. He left a generous bequest in his will to the orchestra because of his love of music and the orchestra. The programme also included two pieces from Mozart, a composer of whom Ted was also especially fond. Conductor Ben Gernon and the orchestra received well-merited and sustained applause as the rich tones of the Beethoven piece

ended the concert. The lively first movement of Beethoven’s brilliant work had a suitably celebratory panache for such a landmark concert. The more reflective second movement was at times played with great delicacy, with the strings gently tugging at the distinctive medley without hurrying along too quickly and the clarinets and oboes gently giving pause for thought. The orchestra members were joyful accomplices as Gernon took the uplifting third movement at a thrilling gallop, with delightful horn and woodwind giving occasional opportunities for catching breath. The strings provided a real powerhouse for a forceful finale, softened by woodwind flourishes, that summed up the orchestra’s confidence. The sweet tones of soloist Tamsin Waley-Cohen eased their way into the first movement of Mozart’s Violin Concerto number 5, but by the end of the exhilarating Rondo movement she had shown that she could also play with fire and not get burned by

Mozart’s technical demands. In between there was a seductive lightness of touch mingled with an ability to smoothly shift from jagged peaks to the basement of the lower register. Mozart’s Symphony number 35 demanded energy from all the orchestra in its racing pulse of a first movement and some quicksilver strings and pumping bassoon helped it along nicely. The second movement was all poise and grace, the strings skipping along while the basses added some dark contrast All the brightness of the third movement shone and in the fourth the orchestra reflected the fire of the first. The only slight disappointment was that the programme did not attract anywhere near a capacity audience to share the important anniversary. Having said that, to achieve such longevity in concert-making is a credit to both the quality of the orchestra and the loyalty of its audiences since the first concert 60 years ago. Long may it continue.

West Side Story at Christ’s Hospital School Louise Dumas reviews this year’s winter performance at The Christ’s Hospital Theatre A story survives and lasts when it can adapt to an audience in any age. Vexed immigration, knife crime and gang war today make West Side Story feel like Sky News. But a school production? There it was, the familiar red poster with a fire escape and broken capital letters advertising a staging by Christ’s Hospital. An older audience with memories of Chita Rivera and George Chakiris in 1959 struggled to imagine school children in the roles – and how wrong we were, how lacking in imagination and how fainthearted. Bernstein might have updated Shakespeare, but the original Romeo and Juliet were teenagers. Christ’s Hospital young thespians were not only the right age, but the right cultural mix: here were real situations of transplanted young people adjusting to city life and bringing all the vigour and talent of their own varied and particular tribes. Director John Johnson, with musical direction by Alex Hodgkinson, achieved nothing short of a miracle. An enormous cast of Jets, Sharks with a smattering of policemen hurtled around the stage with choreographed energy: fingers were clicked, feet were stamped, skirts and petticoats were joyously rustled. Some

actors were just natural stars and if their names aren’t up in lights in a year or so, several hats will be eaten – it’s hard to select individuals in such a galaxy, but particular mention of the dazzling Katerina as an innocently sweet Maria, Taiyse as a charismatic and menacing Bernardo, Jade, an unforgettable Anita and James as Chino. Joe faintly geeky Tony perfectly captured the dawning of a shyly awkward passion. No more sophisticated team of actors would have touched our hearts and prodded our memories in the same way. Wondering queries about the remote possibility of any other academic work getting a look in this term echoed around the interval bar, along with praises for musical gifts, enthusiasm, brio, sparkle, talent, dedication, maturity, and team work. A simple set in the Globe style theatre became a street scene or street café with a few props and period posters: girls wore full skirts and the boys wore jeans. It didn’t take much to create magic. We took friends from Horsham who were silent in admiration. It was the best show they had ever seen at the school, it was beyond expectation for a youth performance, they didn’t have to travel to London and tickets cost £9. Bravo.

Horsham’s La Vida Boutique Christmas Fashion Event Fashion IAMFarahFaz Fashion events don’t come very often in a small town like Horsham, so when one comes up it’s a must see. La Vida Boutique hosted a fashion event showcasing some the boutiques best pieces for the season. I was fortunate to be able to model for them with a few other ladies. The event was held at Pretty Things, our very own local cafe with a lot of character to it. I love shopping at La Vida Boutique in general as Donna always finds some unique pieces that makes me always come back for me. When I was asked to model for her again, I jumped at the chance and bugged my friend Alima to do it with me. Every time I model for La Vida Boutique I end up buying a few pieces myself. As some of you know, I have a bit of a colourful style that reflects on my crazy personality. The boutique suits me well which why I always shop at La Vida. La Vida Boutique’s fashion event was held at Pretty Things on Wednesday 28th November from 11 am to 2 pm. The tickets for the event were about £35, which included a voucher and a goodie bag. There were wonderful choices of food provided by Pretty Things and some tea and coffee. It was an event filled with new faces and wonderful ladies who wanted to see what’s new at

the boutique. There was a demo from Clinique Boots Horsham, who showed how to take care of the face and different ways to put make-up on. After the demo, La Vida Boutique brought out the clothing. We fabulous models came out in different looks from casual wear, winter wardrobe, party wear, and loungewear. We had makeup on, which was all done by the Clinique boots staff. The event was a success because a lot of the pieces were bought after the event. It makes such a difference since clothing on a real woman’s body [sic]. We, women, like to relate when we see models wearing certain clothing. Not all of us are 5ft9 with a size zero waist, well not us average women. Once I tried a few of the pieces on as a model, I ended up buying a few pieces. La Vida boutique is a local boutique in Horsham with also an online shopping option. There are some great pieces for Christmas parties and dinners as well as presents. This is a great chance at supporting independent business in your town. Every penny spent at their location makes all the difference. I believe a town is not home without the unique small businesses from fashion, restaurants, cafes and more. Check out Pretty Things with their fab cakes, sandwiches and even breakfast.

Horsham secure eighth consecutive win in Haywards Heath mud fest

Tom Johnson opened the scoring with a self converted try and then, mid way through the half, kicked successfully again, maximising Tom Blewitt’s try to give Horsham

a 14-0 lead. Heath clawed back five points with a chip and run try, but Horsham led 14-5 at the break. Yet, within a minute of the second half, the advantage was narrowed to just two points after Heath had burst through the Horsham defence to get over the line, followed by a successful kick. With the conditions worsening, making ball handling and staying upright a constant challenge, Johnson nevertheless delivered six more points from two penalties. Then, with both sides understandably committing errors, Joe Wilde gathered a miss-directed Heath kick to run past the defence and, with Johnson’s ever reliable boot, put Horsham 27 -12 to the good. With visibility severely restricted and the livery of the combatants covered in mud and impossible to distinguish, Heath fought through to the corner to round off the scoring, but it was Horsham’s day, Head Coach Nick Stocker saying: “As a local derby this fixture is always tough and today the elements conspired to compound the challenge of motivated opponents, the weather and pitch producing a real leveller. Despite the conditions, we managed the game better than Heath did and played more effectively in key parts of the field. I was pleased with the physicality

A few lapses in concentration leading to penalties and eventual tries against us were areas to improve on, but, on the whole I am pleased with the result. There will not be many teams that come to Heath and get a win and I have no doubt that Heath will have a big say in the final league standings. Whilst all the boys put in a hard shift, in particular I was impressed with Simon Powell on his full debut, Tom Johnson with his defence and kicking skills and Rich Tredgett and Jamie Redmayne who combined to control the team and dominate the lineout. Man of the Match was shared between Ted Powell - whose recent conversion to hooker was severely tested alongside his excellent work rate – and Dan Cass, who was simply monumental in defence with hits that were decisive along with excellent work at scrum.” On Saturday, the half way point of the league season, Horsham return home on their much-coveted ‘all weather’ pitch for another tough fixture, against 6th-placed Old Colfeians, whom they will also play in the next round of the RFU Intermediate Cup in February.

Basketball Martin Read - Sports Reporter Collyer’s Men’s Basketball team has won the final of the AoC (Association of Colleges) South East Regional Tournament last week, for the first time in the college’s history! After beating Farnborough (11-7), Worthing (19-2) and Portsmouth (22-2) in the group stages, a 15-5 win over Eastleigh’s Barton Peverill in the semi, set up a thrilling final with Farnborough, and in a repeat of the earlier group game, Collyer’s astonishing skill, speed and power game paid dividends as they won an incredibly tight match 8-5, Coach Dom Evans - an elite basketball player in his own right - saying: “It was an absolute thriller! The quality and physical endeavour on show was outstanding from both of these

brilliant sides, who were a credit to their respective colleges. The Collyer’s team were amazing throughout the tournament and deserve to be champions!” The tournament was held at the Sixth Form College, Farnborough and the Collyer’s team now goes on to represent the South East at the AoC Sport National Championships at Nottingham in April. Collyer’s Head of Sports Academy John Burroughs said: “Outstanding! We could not be prouder of this incredible team - well done to them and massive thanks to the coaching group! The Collyer’s Basketball academy is excellent and we hope to attract more top players from across the region in the future.” Collyer’s deputy principal Steve Martell was equally delighted: “These players are a credit to Collyer’s and our region’s basketball.

Dom Evans is a basketball magician and is quite rightly now regarded by many as one of England’s top young up and coming coaches.” Collyer’s sport academies in rugby, basketball, football and netball have been created to provide budding players with quality coaching, James Gordon, Head of Faculty for Business Sport and Social Sciences enthusing: “We now have a number of the top basketball, football, netball and rugby players from across the region in our Sport Academy programme. It’s a great chance to combine a full sixth form learning programme with a professional focus on sport. It has always been our target to provide our high level sports players with pathways into elite level sport and this latest success story will certainly help us to achieve this.”

Horsham’s Atlantis Flamingos Synchronised Swimming Club is going from strength to strength! It was a fantastic November for the club, starting with the Multi Regional event in Crawley, where two of the athletes qualified for the prestigious Under 12 figure competition, Maria Vittoria Chiri scoring 46 points and Heather Surely 40.1, Coach Francesca Casagrande telling the District Post: “Our Mixed Duet age 13-15 won gold with a score of 44 – and we were surprised and delighted to also win gold for the overall top score in the age group!” Then, 12 Flamingo athletes – a club record – went to Hartford for a Grade Day, in which the judges assess 10 different elements, Francesca saying: “Again we achieved top club scores with 11 of our party passing Grades1 & 2 - two at Silver level – our eldest Master (age 42) and our youngest, Elizabeth, age 9.” The Flamingos capped off November in style with a weekend visit to Gloucester for the National Age Group competition, achieving excellent results - Maria Vittoria Chiri scoring 50.2, emphasising her superb progress since last year’s score of 40.1. And, Heather Surely – in her first National Figures contest - produced a

highly commendable 47.1. Ranjuo and LeAnne Tomblin also showed outstanding improvement by winning the Mixed Duet England Championship gold medal with a score of 42, Francesca adding: “They also earned silver for us as the second highest scoring club, which was an unexpected bonus, and it was wonderful for the Flamingos to bring home two golds and have 11 of our competitors reaching National G1 & 2 level!” Francesca Casagrande came to England 18 years ago and started teaching swimming, as she still loves doing, and, after being disappointed to discover that there was no synchronised swimming available, she established Horsham Flamingos, who subsequently came under the Atlantis banner, because the Flamingos needed to be associated with a swimming club to be able to enter competitions. Synchronised swimming is a specialist sport open to age group boys and girls and adults (masters), too, and Horsham’s Atlantis Flamingos provides the only synchronised swimming team in West Sussex. Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham brushed aside the disappointment of their FA Trophy exit – just two days previously –

bouncing back with their seventh league win of the season, against struggling Greenwich Borough, but who had been in contention for honours in recent campaigns. The workmanlike victory began with Lee Harding firing into visiting keeper Thomas McGill’s grasp. Horsham, though, had another chance to score mid way through the first half, but Will Hoare’s header went wide. Then, with the Hornets continuing to press, Dean Lovegrove, Jack Brivio and Harvey Sparks set up a move that ended off target before another Hornets’ build up came to nought. Converting opportunities was a problem for Horsham, the Greenwich defence keeping O’Toole and Brivio at bay, as the teams went into the break goal-less. Re-starting, Joey Taylor tested McGill, but an excellent diving save onto the woodwork foiled the Hornets – until, in the 51st minute, Horsham intercepted a Greenwich defensive move allowing O’Toole to unleash a low drive, which McGill could only push out for Harding to give Horsham the lead. Harding and O’Toole were soon back in action but to no avail. With Horsham showing signs of weariness after their two games in quick succession, Greenwich sought to take advantage, but their unaccustomed dangerous attack fizzled out harmlessly. Horsham subsequently secured the three points with quarter of an hour left on the clock, Lovegrove putting O’Toole through, who despite a stumble, supplied Tyrell Richardson-Brown who made no mistake, Horsham winning 2-0 after successfully closing down the game.

Rain, rain go away and come again another day Saturday December 1 – Postponements ! Hassocks v Horsham YMCA and Eastbourne United v Broadbridge Heath Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Only two games went ahead in the Southern Combination Football League last Saturday, both Broadbridge Heath and Horsham YMCA frustratingly falling foul of the weather when they have been playing well. Heath were due to visit bottom club Eastbourne United, whose 15 matches have only yielded two points to date, but the fixture was very much in doubt earlier in the week following a previous postponement at United’s ground – The Oval. While YM had a scheduled trip to The Beacon to take on 16th-placed Hassocks, where one end of the pitch was under water. Chichester City in the chasing pack were able to play against Langney Wanderers and came back from a two nil half time deficit to win 2-3,

courtesy of late goal. YM, though remain top with 42 points from 17 matches, with Newhaven second with 38 and Chichester third on 37, each of the contenders having a game in hand. The only consolation from the postponements is the provision of more recovery time from injuries, perhaps easing YM’s especially long list, but with local rivers overflowing and forecasts of unsettled weather abiding, the hope is that forthcoming games will be able to proceed, avoiding undue fixture congestion into the new year. In a top of the table clash, on Saturday YM are due to welcome current runner up Newhaven, with Heath playing one of their last remaining fixtures at the Leisure Centre – versus Langney Wanderers. Meanwhile, there is encouraging news from the Broadbridge Heath camp, where the present arrangements are not satisfactory – the stand at the Bears new ground has been installed, a club spokesperson saying: “So we’ll soon be a proper football club, not just on the field but off it as well.”

The score remained goal-less at the break, but the Hornets created chances, only for Whitstable’s defence to keep them at bay despite incursions from Rob O’Toole, pacey Tyrell Richardson-Brown, Jack Brivio and Harvey Sparks, visiting keeper Dan Eason negating dangerous attacks in the latter stages. But, the mercurial, recently promoted Oystermen’s erratic season came back to haunt them soon after the resumption when, after Eason pushed away Steve Metcalf’s strike

for a corner, Whitstable’s Stuart West back headed the ball in to put the Hornets in front. Horsham loanee Kieran Lavery then jinked through but shot just wide, yet the Hornets had a two goal cushion when, nine minutes later, Charlie Harris got the ball into the net on the rebound from his own free kick. Whitstable responded with a hard to come by attempt, but semi redundant Horsham keeper Josh Pelling had no difficulty in keeping it out. After Sparks fired over the bar and O’Toole headed just wide, Lee Harding saw his blast diverted by Eason onto the woodwork, but the sub did not have long to wait to give Horsham a three goal advantage, going aerial to defeat the keeper. However, the goal of the game arrived in the 94th minute, Sparks latching onto Joey Taylor’s supply to put the icing on Horsham’s cake, avenging their defeat by the Oystermen when the teams last met – at Gorings Mead – almost four years ago. The win moves Horsham up to fifth, leaving Whitstable midtable. On Saturday Horsham meet another Kent side with a long trip to south of the county for a potentially tough encounter with third in the table Hythe Town. Meanwhile, developments at Horsham’s new Hop Oast ground are gathering pace with erection of the clubhouse in full swing.

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Sussex Cricketer Stuart Whittingham, a genuinely fast right arm bowler who has played for both Horsham and Roffey, has signed a three year deal with Gloucestershire after being released from his Sussex contract. Stuart became a Sussex professional in 2016, taking a wicket with the first ball of his first class debut, against Derbyshire – and, the following season, against the same county at Hove he took 5-80. He started playing representative cricket for Sussex at age 10 and, having a Scottish mother, has played international cricket for Scotland. But, Sussex are currently well-blessed with opening bowlers, the attack being spearheaded by Jofra Archer – another former Horsham player – and England’s Chris Jordan, limiting Stuart’s appearances. Whereas Gloucestershire, for whom former Billingshurst player Chris Liddle bowls, having also transferred from Sussex, have lost both Liam Norwell and Craig Miles to Warwickshire, creating an enticing opening. Stuart Whittingham is an experienced cricketer, playing around the UK, in Ireland and at further afield venues, including the Netherlands, Papua New Guinea and Nepal. He will be 25 in February and says:

“It’s been an honour to represent Sussex and has always been my proudest achievement, however, with first team opportunities uncertain I feel that I’m at an age where I need to be playing as much first team cricket as possible and the opportunity to do this with Gloucestershire was too good to turn down, providing me with a new and exciting challenge to carry on my cricket development. I will look back fondly at my time with Sussex and thank the club for making my time so enjoyable.” Sussex Director of Cricket, Keith Greenfield said: “With Stu’s best interests in mind, we’ve agreed to release him with a year remaining on his contract to give him the best opportunity to further his career.” While Head Coach Jason Gillespie added: “We hope this move is a positive one for Stu and wish him all the very best at Gloucestershire.” Like Sussex, Gloucestershire play in Division 2 of the County Championship and see Stuart as a great acquisition, Head Coach Richard Dawson commenting: “I’m delighted that Stuart has joined us.
