Leonardslee Gardens officially open! russ bedford The Streeter Family and their team welcomed us on a special tour of the newly renovated Leonardslee Gardens last week. The sprawling 240 acre estate has been painstakingly restored and improved upon over the past 2 years and now is ready for the public to enjoy. After 9 years of closure the appearance of the garden should impress people from the moment they arrive. Whether it is any of the 10,000 trees that have been catalogued by head gardener Ray Abraham or the 19th Century grade 2 listed house. Leonardslee has the ability to captivate your imagination and delight your eyes. The project itself is seen as the largest garden restoration since the famous Heligan was restored in the 1990’s. A team of up to twenty gardeners have been striving for perfection since 2017 and now they are beginning to see the fruits of their labour. A vast array of colour and natural beauty will hit you as you follow the paths that lead around the grounds but that is not all, the owner of the estate, Penny Streeter OBE has ensured that the changes weren’t just botanical. showcases a variety of delightful food all of which is sourced from the estate and local farms whilst the mansion has been beautifully restored, updated and opened for classic tea. Penny says, “We are delighted to welcome visitors back to Leonardslee. They can enjoy the finest woodland gardens in England, with a stunning collection of plants from all over the world.” The work undertaken by the team saw 10 miles of pathway inspected and rebuilt, Ray told those of us in attendance that some 50 acres haven’t even been fully discovered yet, it makes you wonder what other species of plant he may find. With the vast collections of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, magnolias, bluebells collected from all over the world, the excitement for Ray and the team on potentially discovering even more flowers is clear, from his first visit in 1977 it has been a love affair and he states, “This garden is a paradise.” During this period of restoration the team have recorded 95 champion trees, one of which isnthe critically endangered Sicilian Fir. With only 30 left in the wild, seedlings will be taken to Kew Gardens so that the species can be preserved. Whilst maintaining the beautiful aesthetics of colourful

Stef van Vuuren has lived in Horsham since 2004, when he arrived from South Africa. The beautiful countryside of Sussex and the South Coast was the inspiration to develop a passion for photography and catalyst to explore more of the UK and abroad. Once a year, a return to South Africa to visit family provides the ideal opportunity to visit game reserves and enjoy the wildlife and “Big Five” in nature. Now he doesn’t travel anywhere without his camera gear, and early morning starts to watch the sun rising at dawn or setting late in the day are well worth the effort and create stunning light and colours. The brilliant local museum at Horsham is a fantastic showcase of the history and development of the area and Stef is delighted to collaborate with Horsham Museum as a gallery for his work. Stef has decided to use the topic “Scapes” for his first exhibition and his images of land-scapes, sea-scapes, sky-scapes portray a visual escape for the eye and mind. As well as landscapes, Stef enjoys portrait & wildlife photography and is training for commercial operations with drones for photography and videography. Super sold out Strictly raises just under £3,000 for local charity!

On Saturday 30 March, the team of staff and volunteers at local charity working with older people, Age UK Horsham District, hung the bunting high and threw open the doors of The Drill Hall to entertain 144 guests at their ‘Strictly Vintage’ 1940s and 1950s themed Tea Dance. There was a fabulous turnout of guests of all ages dressed magnificently in vintage style outfits and the afternoon was spent dancing to music from the eras, provided by the ‘Royal British Legion Dance Band’. The Charity’s Chief Executive Officer, Sonia Mangan, said: “Our Strictly Vintage Dances get more and more popular every time, with this our eighth event! We are so pleased that our Tea Dances continue to be popular, this one in particular, as it was Mother’s Day weekend and people were bringing their Mums for an afternoon

The event, organised by the Age UK Horsham District Fundraising Team, with many Age UK Horsham District staff and volunteers

providing support, was a huge success and raised £2,876.32 for the local charity’s work with and for older people in the community. Other supporters include a host of local companies and individuals who supplied items for the raffle and helped to promote the event. All monies raised at this event go towards funding the free services the team at Age UK Horsham District offer across the district to support local older people, such as their Visiting and Information and Advice Services. Loneliness is one of the key issues the charity tackles - over 1 million older people in the UK say they always (or often) feel lonely and loneliness is fast becoming a serious public health concern, with research suggesting it can be as bad for one’s health as smoking or being morbidly obese. With a rapidly ageing population, this means more pressure on already stretched NHS and social care services. Age UK Horsham District is committed to reducing and preventing loneliness among older people locally and their Visiting Service is just one of the ways they do this. The service matches a volunteer to a lonely older person, who then makes regular visits to offer friendship, social interaction and support. St Mary’s CofE School make national Junior NHW awards at Heron Way Primary School computing finals for 6th year in a row! Horsham’s Junior Neighbourhood Watch recently completed its after-school club course at Heron Way Primary, in Horsham, with a presentation of framed award certificates for the seventeen participants - 13 of the 17 were girls, with triplets and twins among them, making a very unusual group. The Junior NHW teaching team commented that the 17 were very lively, receptive and responsive. The award presentation was made by Horsham District Council’s Chairman, Councillor Peter Burgess, who was joined by PC

Darren Worsfold, Youth Prevention Officer of Horsham Police, who had assisted the JNHW volunteer team with a stimulating explanation of Police activities. Parents and relatives of the participants came to witness the award presentation, which was followed by a group photo. The pupils were reminded that they were now members of Neighbourhood Watch for life, and to be sure to pass on to parents, grandparents and friends all that they had learned from the course. A team of seven Year 5 pupils at St Mary’s CofE Primary school in Horsham have made the finals of the PA Consulting Raspberry Pi National Competition, for the sixth year in a row. The Raspberry Pi computer is a small credit card sized computer, born out of the UK, that has sold millions across the world. Each year, PA Consulting set a theme for the competition and teams have a small £100 budget to produce something with the small computer to fit this brief. The theme provided this year was Travel and Transport. The St. Mary’s team developed an idea (using the Pi) that aims to encourage parents (living some distance away) to drop off their children at a number of specified drop off points away from their school, before the children then walked into school. It is worth noting that a high percentage of serious child road accidents happen within 200 metres of a school gate, so any initiative to have less cars causing congestion around school gates should be encouraged. Children use a little NFC tag to scan in at the drop off point to a portable device (a Pi Zero) and then again at school on a human sized tree (in the shape of a Minecraft tree) housing a second full sized Raspberry Pi. These check-ins are then validated to ensure the child has scanned in at both locations,

a point is added to their year and school and as a reward: resulting in a patch of land being automatically built in a Minecraft World running on the Raspberry Pi inside the tree. The more pupils walk in, the bigger and more varied the world becomes in front of their very eyes. Schools participating can view how they compare to other schools on a dashboard the team have built using PowerBi against the data held on AWS (Amazon’s cloud). The pupils, who take their pro-

ject to the finals in London on 30 April, have worked with Python, Electronics, the Cloud (AWS), Databases and SQL, product design, presentation skills, charts, Minecraft coding, team exercises, brainstorming exercises, soldering, carpentry and have seen the acorn of their ideas turn into a final product ready for them to market in front of the judges. This year’s competition is supported by Rolls Royce, Highways England and Transport for London.

Labour Party members march to County Hall

Labour Party members from across Horsham district marched to County Hall in Chichester last Friday and took part in the Climate emergency action demonstration. They then joined Labour County Councillor, Michael Jones, at County Hall, who proposed a motion calling on West Sussex County Council to recognise the climate emergency and pledge to do everything in their power to reduce the impact on our environment. After the event, Horsham Labour’s Michael Symes, who took part in the demonstration and is standing in the local elections in Trafalgar ward, said: “We are cam-

paigning for West Sussex County Council to declare a climate emergency so that immediate action is taken before it is too late. We need to put the next generation before our own short-term needs and selfish desires. “Every decision the Council takes, whether it’s on housing, transport, waste management or energy, must focus on the environmental impact. As someone seeking election to Horsham District council, I have taken the Climate Action pledge and, as an elected councillor, will do everything within my power to ensure Horsham District signs up too. Drastic action is needed now.”

Included in Labour’s local manifesto are a range of green commitments, including using the levers of local government to reduce the impact on the environment and commitments to setting up an environmental committee to assess the environmental impact of its decisions. A Labour run council will ‘create a new senior role in the council with a focus on engaging with the public, making sure new innovative initiatives are developed and delivered across the district’. A programme of divestment, ensuring that none of Horsham District’s reserves or pension funds are invested in companies whose operations have a negative impact on our environment will also be rolled out if Labour win the elections in May. David Hide, chair of Horsham Labour Party and one of three candidates for Forest ward, confirmed: “This is Horsham Labour’s most innovative manifesto and reflects the seriousness of the situation we find ourselves in. A unique event is taking place this weekend (13 April). Never before, in over 150 years of existence, have photographers from both ends of Horsham District worked together, let alone created a gallery of over 80 photographs celebrating the culture of the District. Yet, inspired by the Horsham District Year of Culture, members of the Horsham Photographic Society and Steyning Camera Club have spent over 365 days in all weathers, capturing by light, remarkable images that portray the district’s amazing cultural life. Horsham Museum and Art Gallery are delighted to be able to showcase their work. Because there are so many brilliant pictures, half way through the three month long run there will be a complete refresh with new photographs being displayed. The second display will open on 24 May. Photography came to Hor-

sham District around 1855 and, ever since then, it has been part of the district’s cultural life, as it has both recorded culture and been part of it. As part of the new temporary exhibition at Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum and Art Gallery, the exhibition shows photography in the district has been led by amateurs, with the professional photographer on their heels. On display will be some early examples of their work, including that of a Horsham photographic inventor. However, the focus of the exhibition are the non-professional photographers, the Club/Society members whose love of the medium shines out in the stunning prints of the district. It would be invidious to select some highlights, as every image on display deserves to be there, either through technical merit or through capturing that special image; be it reflection from a dashboard; to shop windows; to

sportsmen, musicians, dancers, artists, natural world-decaying and restoring, to nature controlled to dressing for the occasion, through to images of reportage even images of loss and of sheer determination and applause. The exhibition is an amazing celebration that deserved to have a permanent record of the unique occasion. As part of the Year of Culture, Horsham Museum have published a fully illustrated book that not only includes every photograph displayed in the exhibition, but also gives a background to the history of the culture of photography in the District, focusing on its early days. Captured by Light: a photographic gallery of Horsham District’s cultural life is priced at £13.95, available now in the museum shop. russ bedford Tuesday April 9th saw a hugely successful charity bowling event take place at The Rec in Horsham, with 21 teams from a variety of local businesses taking part. Organised by The Rotary Club of Horsham to raise money for local charity Set 4 Success it was an evening full of strikes, spares, gutter balls and splits that saw £500 raised for the charity. Whilst many bowlers enjoyed the great menu options provided by the new diner at The Rec, others were quick to head to the bar, perhaps needing some Dutch courage before entering the tense, hostile atmosphere of competitive bowling. We were soon underway and it was clear that this was going to be a night of fun rather than a competition to see who wins. That being said, Ben Hewson patrolled the lanes with his laptop entering scores as the games finished. The competitive element was now beginning to show, although maybe that was just in my head, being a former league bowler I felt I had a point to prove and was quite satisfied to hit a 202 in my first game. The drinks flowed and the food constantly served, the second

game came round fast and at this stage it was between us, and IMPACT for the top spot. We weren’t particularly confident but the offer from Graham, a coowner of The Rec to give a free night out to the first team to hit 4 strikes in a row certainly raised the level of intensity, sadly for us the strikes didn’t come but it didn’t matter. It was a brilliant evening with two prime objectives of raising money and having fun achieved. Once Ben had entered the final scores we saw that IMPACT were crowned deserved winners. The Jannels Family using their years of bowling experience to rack up some consistent scores. The District Post came a surprise second. Davey helping secure it with his combined 2 game score of 130. Third place went to Gutterly Ridiculous from Kreston Reeves. Ben then announced the ‘Best bowler’ award which went to me! I felt this award somewhat unfair though due to me having bowled for 15 years so rather than accept it, I offered to donate it. Jason Hayes from Durrants duly accepted it from us and made a donation to a local charity in order to receive the prize.Excellent work from those involved with organising the event and we pass our thanks from all that took part, onto The Rotary Club of Horsham, Set 4 Success and The Rec.

Collyer’s student wins YST 2019! St Catherine’s Hospice Make a Will Fortnight

Collyer’s student, Billy Venner, has won the Young Start-up Talent (YST) 2019. The YST is a community based project aimed at young entrepreneurs aged between 16-25, looking to start their own business. The South East Showcase took place at Thales UK with a £50,000 prize fund, made up of a range of business products and services, which provides the chosen winner with the vital support & guidance needed to start their own business with a more sustainable future. The Capitol Summer School Following the success of previous years, The Capitol will continue its annual Summer School tradition with the production of the popular Madness musical, Our House. The well-established musical theatre Summer School gives local children aged 8-18 the opportunity to work with professional West End tutors for over two weeks, learning the scenes, songs and routines before finishing off the project with four performances of the full-scale production in the Main Theatre. Based in 1980s Camden Town, Our House follows the story of sixteen-year-old London lad, Joe Casey, who breaks into a building site whilst on a first date, in a bid to impress the girl of his dreams. When the police turn up, Joe’s life splits in two: Good Joe, who stays to help and Bad Joe, who flees. The musical features a collection of Madness hits, including House of Fun, Baggy Trousers, Driving In My

Car, It Must Be Love and, of course, Our House! Nick Mowat, General Manager and producer of The Capitol’s Summer School, explained: “Providing activities for young people is a hugely important part of our programme. Sunday April 6 – National Cup Quarter Final Ipswich Mixed Team 4 1 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter A much-depleted Horsham Mixed XI made the long journey to Ipswich to face a Suffolk side having the luxury of 15 in their squad, compared to the Horsham contingent of just ten. But, with the prize of an appearance at the Finals weekend at the Lee Valley Olympic Park – for the second year running - Horsham came away winners, despite the hosts scoring first. Bella de Rocha equalised for Horsham to leave the score level on 1-1 at the break. The second half, though, belonged to Horsham, starting with Gee Humphreys putting Chas Richardson through to take the lead, before de Rocha gave Horsham a two goal cushion. Mixed Captain Joey

And, apart from being pleasant, friendly places with a wide range of social pursuits, our sports clubs are very successful, too. Horsham Rugby Club, and Horsham Hockey Club Men’s and Ladies’ 1st XI are all currently holders of their Sussex Cups, which they have won on a serial basis and all three are in this year’s finals again. For the second year running Horsham’s Mixed Hockey team is through to Finals Day at London’s Olympic Park and this Saturday Horsham Rugby Club is hosting probably the most important game in its illustrious history, when they play Farnham in a bid to be promoted into the RFU’s London SE1 League – one step below National level, yet to be savoured by the Club. Horsham

Football Club is also on the cusp of breaking through to their play offs – promotion as we welcome them back to the town at their magnificent new home after ten years of nomadic existence would be highly appropriate. Horsham Cricket Club has won the Sussex League for fun, won the National Cup at Lord’s and, regularly the Sussex Cup, lastly in 2016, while Roffey are Sussex Champions again – for the fourth time in five years, having also won the Sussex Cup in 2017 and getting through to both the National semi final and National T20 finals day last year. Horsham Rugby Club is rightly proud of its superb artificial pitch, while at Horsham’s cricket ground, just a short stroll from the Carfax, in addition to the two cricket grounds, there are the thriving Tennis and Squash Clubs. Roffey, too, has two grounds, the second one being at Faygate. And, apart from the bigger clubs there are excellent arrangements at Trinity Cricket Club, looking a picture and soon be a hive of youth coaching activity on Friday evenings. Former Premier League side Billingshurst CC also has outstanding facilities with two grounds and there are a number of other pleasant clubs.

Broadbridge Heath Football Club and Southwater Cricket and Football Clubs are about to move into their admirable, long awaited new homes. Meanwhile there is excellent youth football provision – for boys and girls, as for all of our sports – with clubs such as Horsham Sparrows and Roffey Robins. The district has great opportunities for cyclists, social and serious, with Horsham Cycling, while runners can join Horsham Joggers - the Horsham 10K race comes up on June 2nd and the brilliant Barns Green Half Marathon on September 29th, when the whole village welcomes runners from far and wide for a lovely family day, raising money for St Catherine’s Hospice in the process. There are also walking groups, excellent Leisure Centres with swimming and gyms, plus top golf courses at Mannings Heath, Cottismore, Slinfold, Rookwood and elsewhere. Whichever is your sport - badminton, fishing, petanque, stoolball, table tennis or whatever, you will be able to find it – or start it – in Horsham district. So, whether you are young or more mature, enjoy and rejoice in our wonderful, successful sporting community.

Sittingbourne beat Horsham at Lancing in August, but since then the fortunes of the two sides have varied considerably – Horsham thrashed the Kent team at

Woodstock Park last Saturday and are second, chasing Cray Wanderers, with three games remaining and a coveted play off spot up for grabs. Whereas, the Kent side – who had lost to bottom club Greenwich Borough the week before – now find themselves in 16th spot and not yet clear of the threat of relegation. With a hat trick, involvement in the Hornets’ fourth goal and denial by the woodwork, Chris Smith was the principle architect of Sittingbourne’s woes, the much-changed Kent side having no answer to his speed and ingenuity. The game, though, started quietly with shots from Rob O’Toole and Dylan Merchant coming to nothing and Sittingbourne not troubling Horsham’s newly signed keeper from VCD Athletic, Joe Mant, whose opposite number, Patrick Lee had to be alert to push a Smith rocket over the bar. Yet it was Sittingbourne who might have opened the scoring mid way through the first half, but, on the break from a Horsham attack, Lawrence was off target – a costly miss, because Horsham immediately went ahead, a good build up enabling Smith to complete from close quarters. Horsham kept testing the Kentish defence and were rewarded when Jack Brivio headed home Lee Harding’s cross just before the break. Early in the second half Horsham went three up, Smith firing a powerful volley into the upper reaches of the goal, and with Horsham making all the running, Smith swiftly followed up with a drive just past the upright before Tyrell Richardson-Brown could not quite latch onto the striker’s supply. However, more goals were inevitable, O’Toole and Harvey Sparks creating danger, and Horsham duly went four ahead from an own goal, Allan turning in Smith’s cross. Smith was soon in action again from the penalty spot after being fouled by the keeper. He missed a spot kick in the previous game, but this time it was routine for Smith, his hat trick notching up his 20th success of the season. Jack Brivio then compounded the hosts’ misery, nodding in a free kick for his second. Time was fast evaporating, but Sittingbourne were gifted a goal courtesy of an un-cleared corner from which substitute Lewins benefited. In the dying moments a Smith pile-driver crashed into the woodwork, but it mattered not, the final whistle bringing Horsham’s most sizeable league win for thirteen years and leaving the Hornets needing just a solitary point to secure a play off place. On Saturday the Hornets venture further into east Kent, to Herne Bay (14th), before, on the 20th, they have their final home game at Lancing against another Kent side – Faversham (17th). Play offs apart, Horsham finish their league programme with a visit to the Channel Islands to take on 18th in the table Guernsey on Easter Monday. Earlier in the season Horsham beat Herne Bay and Faversham and drew with Guernsey.

Horsham YMCA returned to winning ways after their seven match run of league victories had been interrupted by the unfortunate draw at Newhaven the previous Saturday. YM did the double over now mid table Hassocks last season – resoundingly - but the Robins beat YM 5-3 at the Beacon in January, so revenge was sweet. Yet YM trailed 0-1 at the break and might have suffered further damage after Jake Lindsey had put the visitors ahead in the fifth minute. It was not YM’s most stunning performance of the season, but they hung in, scoring two second half goals and then successfully closing the game down to take all three points, despite being reduced to ten men with ample time remaining. Hassocks were without the services of former Gorings Mead favourite Phil Johnson and the second half was more enterprising for YM. After Jack Frankland had shot wide and Callum Donaghey blocked off Hassocks’ attack for an unsuccessful corner, action switched back to the other end, Jack Hartley equalising ten minutes after the re-start. And, it promptly got better, Alex Barbary blasting the ball into the top left corner of the net to give YM the lead. Dean Bown’s looping shot then ballooned over the bar before a YM corner went well wide. Half time changes were making a difference, with YM now calling the

shots. But, Hartley’s long range strike was off target, before Tony Nwachukwu’s header somehow evaded the goal. YM were then harshly penalised when Hartley was sent off for diving in the box, a spot kick appearing warranted, with the Hassocks defender admitting to inadvertently clicking him from behind. The numerical disadvantage put YM under pressure with Hassocks striving for a late equaliser, earning two unrewarded corners. YM, though, were also creating chances, sub Jack Ryder shooting hard to the Hassocks keeper ahead of getting through again, but firing past in an inviting one on one opportunity. After a break this Saturday, YM have their last three fixtures in quick succession – on Easter Saturday (20th) there will be a hard fought local derby against Broadbridge Heath at the Leisure Centre, especially as Heath have already beaten YM twice this season – in the RUR Cup and the league. Then comes two home games, first versus Crawley Down Gatwick on the Tuesday evening after Easter (23rd),a re-arranged Boxing Day fixture, and, then, on the last weekend of the league programme – Saturday April 27th - YM welcome Langney Wanderers, having beaten both CDG and Langney earlier in the season. Meanwhile, requiring just a point to sew up the title, Chichester beat Langney on Saturday to be crowned worthy, uncatchable Champions with 88 points. YM are currently second with 76 and Eastbourne Town third on 74. Newhaven (73) are now fourth, but with a game in hand

Another win places Heath sixth Saturday April 6 Southern Combination Football League Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 2 0 Eastbourne United AFC Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Broadbridge Heath continued their good run of 2019 form with another win, having been beaten only twice in15 games since the festivities. Earlier in the season the two teams battled out a hard fought goal-less draw at East Sussex’s Oval, but last Saturday, after a stalemate first half Heath saw off struggling Eastbourne United without too much difficulty thanks to two goals after the interval, despite still being without injured Captain Tom Howard-Bold and with Brad Peters suspended, Ryan Brackpool unwell and Charlie Leach unavailable. Heath though, began in a rush with the prolific Devon Fender, George Cousins and Jamie Taylor all threatening in the opening exchanges. But, workmanlike United kept them at bay and then began to test the re-vamped Heath back line, but neither side had scored at the break. With the uneven pitch making an accurate passing game difficult, Heath tried a differ-

ent approach in the second half and, mid way through, they were rewarded from the penalty spot after Taylor had been floored when in a close range scoring position, Fender converting. Heath keeper Kieron Thorp maintained their advantage when Pearson looked likely to equalise, Thorp’s feet keeping the ball out. Following Heath changes, sub Renato Carvalho crossed to Fender, who made no mistake, bringing his seasonal tally to 15 a minute before scheduled full time. There is no match on Saturday, sixth placed Heath returning to action on Easter Saturday (20th) when, in what is sure to be a competitive local derby, Horsham YMCA visit. Then, for their last game at the Leisure Centre before finally taking over their adjacent new ground, Heath welcome 16th in the table Loxwood, ahead of the last Saturday of the season, April 27th, when there is the trip to Arundel. Meanwhile, at the foot of the table Eastbourne United occupy the penultimate berth with 24 points, three more than bottom club Shoreham. Arundel are on the same number of points as United, but shade them by dint of a one goal difference. Newcomers Little Common are hovering above the relegation zone with 26 points.

Saturday April 6 – London 2 South East Horsham 76 12 Maidstone Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Coming in to last Saturday’s game Horsham had won their previous nine league fixtures – mostly by handsome margins. They beat Maidstone 23-50 in Kent on the first week of the season, but any fear of complacency and trace of nerves on the field and touchline was quickly dispelled when Sam Hampson powered over in the opening minute, Tom Johnson’s kick providing a seven point advantage almost before the visitors realised that the game had started. The magnificent artificial pitch at Coolhurst really suits Horsham’s fast open runners and Aaron Linfield soon

burst through, and, by the quarter of an hour mark, Declan Nwachukwu had emulated his team mates and Horsham were well on their way. Jonny Whiting then added a try from close quarters, followed by Giles Barber and Nwachukwu – who ran half the field without anyone in the opposition managing to lay a finger on him, Johnson’s boot giving Horsham an unchallenged 38 point lead at the break. Restarting, unrelenting Horsham continued in the same vein, Mike Watts and Joe Wilde soon getting over, both boosted by Johnson’s kicking. But, to their credit, despite being 52 adrift in as many minutes, Maidstone notched up two tries of their own, one converted. That was, though, the end of their fun, Watts, Jordan Bell, Hampson and Nwachukwu all subsequently gaining the line, Johnson converting twice, Horsham compiling their highest

score – 76 points – of their high scoring season – 913 points in total with eight 50+ wins (five in their last seven games). In their pomp Maidstone have been in the London SE1 League, demolishing Horsham en route to back to back promotions, but now it is Horsham’s turn to bid for their first opportunity in the upper echelon. Horsham were last beaten in the league just before Christmas – by eventual champions Beckenham, Head Coach Nick Stocker saying: “After that we understood that we needed to win all of our remaining games if we were to have a chance at a promotion play off. This included tough away assignments to Charlton Park, Deal and Old Colfeians as well as tricky encounters at home against the likes of Haywards Heath.
