Principal hails ‘Stellar results’ The College of Richard Collyer has yet again achieved superb results! Students have excelled with 64% achieving high grades, with an A-level pass rate at an astonishing 99.3% and 14 students successfully gaining Oxbridge places. Collyer’s Principal Sally Bromley was extremely pleased with the outstanding performance. “These results are stellar – 64% high grades are a fantastic achievement for our staff and students. “Everyone works so hard throughout the year, so today we can have big smiles on our faces when we see the result of all that effort and determination.” In a number of A-level subjects, the results are particularly outstanding. Dance and German posted 100% at A*/B, Further Maths a staggering 94% of students achieving A*/B, while 77% of Photography students also gained A*/B. 75% of Maths and French respectively posted A*/B grades, with 73% of Physics and Philosophy, 71% Psychology and Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and 70% of Chemistry also achieving A*/B. In addition, 68% of Art, 61% of History and Economics, 60% Music and 57% of Government and Politics students

achieved the high A*/B benchmark. Deputy Principal Steve Martell was delighted: “I could not be prouder of the Collyer’s community. These results are fantastic!” Collyer’s excellent quality of vocational course provision continues, with a 100% pass rate and great results in BTEC Diploma Art & Design, Business, Early Years Education (EYE), Health and Social Care, IT, Music Practitioners, Sport and Travel and Tourism. Dan Lodge, Vice-Principal (Quality and Curriculum) was extremely pleased with the college’s success across the board: “Approximately two-thirds of our students achieved high grades, which represents yet another bumper year for Collyer’s. “Expert and dedicated staff make all the difference and I am really delighted to see the hard work of our BTEC students rewarded with excellent grades and a 100% pass rate maintained!” Noteworthy individual successes included former Weald pupil Jennifer Goodier, who having achieved 4 A*s in German, English Literature, History and EPQ is now heading to Oxford University to study History. Local Hospice’s picturesque autumn hike returns Calling all walking enthusiasts and nature lovers! Join St Catherine’s Hospice on Sunday 13 October for a challenging hike through the picturesque Sussex countryside. Starting from the South of England Showground at Ardingly, a brand new venue for this year, the hike will take you through Sussex fields and past historic landmarks, including the Balcombe Viaduct, Ardingly Reservoir and Wakehurst Place Seedbank, and will allow you to enjoy the changing colours of autumn whilst raising funds for your local hospice. The full hike is 13 miles, but there are also 9 and 6 mile walking routes available, and a 3 mile nature trail, making this a family friendly event - even suitable for the dog! There will be plenty of parking on the day, and you’ll be greeted with hot food, entertainment and delicious cakes to celebrate at the end of your hike. Sophie Peckham, Community and Events Fundraising Manager at St Catherine’s, said: “We’re delighted to host Sussex Landmarks Hike for a second year. This

autumnal hike follows a stunning route through the Sussex countryside and is great fun for all involved. We hope lots of you will join us, along with your family and friends. Your support will help us be there to provide end of life care for more local people when they need us most.” St Catherine’s is hoping to raise £35,000 from the Sussex Landmarks Hike by asking walkers for a donation or to raise sponsorship. This will allow the hospice to offer expert care to even more local terminally ill people in the future. At the moment, the local hospice can only care for one in three people who need them, but with your help and support, they’re determined to care for everyone. She said, “I’m really excited about university. Excellent A Level Results for Christ’s Hospital Pupils

Christ’s Hospital pupils and their teachers are celebrating another year of impressive A level results. Overall 11% of all Pre-U and A-Level grades achieved were equivalent to an A* with 61% of grades achieved being A*-B. Out of a cohort of 121 pupils 40 A* or equivalent grades were achieved with 22 pupils, 18% of the cohort achieving a minimum of one A*. 25 Pupils, 20% of the cohort, achieved strong grades in four or more A-Levels. 15 Pupils achieved a clean sweep of 3 or more A or A* grades. The average UCAS points achieved by each pupil was 124, which equates to BBB. Christ’s Hospital: Classrooms for Kenya

For three weeks at the start of the 2019 summer holiday, 47 Year 12 and Year 13 students from Christ’s Hospital, and 9

members of staff, travelled to Kitale in western Kenya to help build new classrooms for three schools.

Each school suffers from inadequate buildings for their student numbers and many of these schools have to resort to using

unsafe mud huts or simply teaching outside under the shade of a tree. Funding and building these new classrooms will have a hugely beneficial impact on Kitale’s children and young adults. Prior to departing, each student (and staff member) had been tasked with raising a minimum of £300 through sponsorship: this was combined with Christ’s Hospital’s first ever school sponsored walk, which saw over 500 students and staff walk through the West Sussex countryside to raise funds to help pay for the buildings. The combined efforts from these events has meant that staff and students from the school have raised over £44,000 during the last academic year, which has paid for 6 new classrooms to be built, and this represents an amazing amount of fund raising from Christ’s Hospital towards this project. The new classrooms have been built at three different schools: Kibagenge Primary School, Norah and Musundi Primary School and Saiwa Secondary School, all of which are based in western Kenya. Pupils raised funds through a variety of methods, ranging from: sponsored

walks, runs and triathlons; setting up an online bookshop; the Three Peaks Challenge; forgoing their sixteenth birthday presents and asking for sponsorship instead; cake bakes; live music and DJ sets; and even shaving their head. As well as supporting education in Kenya, the trip aimed to provide CH students with a powerful and life-shaping experience where they both work hard to contribute positively to a community and have the opportunity to experience Kenya’s natural beauty. After returning from the trip, one student said: “It was an amazing, eye opening and fulfilling experience that has significantly shaped me as a person.” Organisers congratulated all who were involved: “Well done to our students and staff for making such a positive difference to schools in Kenya!” Christ’s Hospital is currently planning to return to Kenya in 2021. Horsham’s Capitol maintains ‘Hall of Fame’ status for a second year

The Capitol, Horsham has been named one of the best entertainment venues in the UK for the second year running after maintaining its TripAdvisor ‘Hall of Fame’ status. Green Gym volunteers have an unusual workout Warnham Nature Reserve has seen some unusual activity over that last couple of weeks, as volunteers from the Green Gym have been moving tons of reclaimed Horsham Stone. Under the guidance of Lewes based artist Will Nash, the volunteers have been learning the skill of dry stone walling in order to construct a Bat Bothy for the reserve. At once ancient and contemporary, the elegant sculpture designed by Will Nash is in the form of a tall dome or chimney referencing the industrial heritage of the nature reserve, and providing a new habitat for roosting bats. The Bat Bothy has seen particularly strong and determined green gym members using the

lifting gear and being fastidious in the placing of each stone. Helped along by wardens from the reserve, the Bat Bothy is now complete and stands a little over 2m tall. The sculpture has many nooks, crannies and little tunnels for the bats to crawl through so that they can roost in the interior. The stone is a perfect material to maintain an ambient temperature and keep them dry through the winter. Reclaimed from the Peace Garden (near St. Mary’s) when the paths were renovated, the horsham stone has also found a new home. The reserve has regular visitors of Daubenton Bats feeding on mosquitoes that rise up from the lake. Known as the ‘water bat’ the Daubenton’s fish for insects

from the water using their large feet and tail. Along with soprano and common Pipistrelles, they are regularly sighted, but their roosts are unknown. The wardens are hoping to use an endoscope to view the interior of the bothy and survey the numbers and species of bat living in the reserve. As a conservation project, the green gym members said that it was great to work on a project from start to finish with a very particular outcome. Usually the 50 or so members are working on a variety of projects across the Horsham District on a Tuesday and Thursday and may not see an end result. Later in the year Will Nash will be returning to the reserve to create a second sculpture, this time

using chestnut palings to explore the form of a tri-helix. The two sculptures form part of the arts project ‘Field Notes from Warnham’ as a permanent outcome for the Reserve and The Horsham

On Thursday 12 September, the last Mary How Trust bingo will take place at Storrington Village Hall. The popular monthly bingo evenings have been running for 12 years, and have raised £13,000 to give local men and women the chance to benefit from early detection of cancer and other serious illness. The Mary How Trust has taken the decision to call time on its bingo following the retirement of bingo caller Alan French, and the event’s lead volunteer Jacinta White. Roanne Moore, the charity’s fundraising manager, explained: “We’re very grateful to Alan and Jacinta for looking after the bingo evenings so brilliantly for several years – they’ve played a huge part in the evenings’ success, and they’re a hard act to follow! “We hoped to find someone to

step into their shoes, but people lead busy lives and we haven’t been successful. Never say never, though! If we can find a bingo caller and someone to organise the monthly evenings, then we’d be delighted to re-launch our bingo. It’s such a fun and well-loved event, and has helped to give so many local families a healthier future.” For now, the event on 12 September is “79 – One More Time” to play Mary How Trust bingo. Horsham School of Dance (HSD) is re-launching under new ownership! Annie Dunkley, a Royal Ballet trained ex professional dancer, is taking over as principal from September and, to celebrate, HSD are hosting a free ‘Funday Sunday’ event on Sunday 8 September. Established in Horsham since 1925, Horsham School of Dance is one of the area’s most respected dance schools - providing an outstanding training in ballet, tap, modern, contemporary dance and musical theatre. Every year, HSD dancers are chosen to perform in the

local Pantomimes in Horsham, Crawley and Dorking, and the school’s students have 100% pass rate in their ballet, tap and modern exams. Annie has taught ballet at HSD since 2011, shortly after moving to Horsham from Wimbledon with her family, and this year she takes over as principal after the previous owner, Rosemary Walters, retired from the school in the Summer. “I’m really keen to get the whole community involved in dance, and as part of our re-launch ‘Funday Sunday’ I’m inviting families to participate in

a free Family Ballet Workshop. I have taught all ages, from 2 to 92, and have led family workshops at the Royal Opera House, and for English National Ballet at the Coliseum and the Royal Albert Hall, so I know I can get everyone up and dancing - even if they don’t know the first thing about ballet! Very young children love dancing with their parents and grandparents - no leotards or tutus are required, although they are always welcome of course!” explained Annie. The ‘Funday Sunday’ event begins at 2pm and there are opportunities to try out some of the other classes on offer at Horsham School of Dance - Tap and Modern, Musical Theatre and Contemporary Jazz, culminating in the Family Ballet Workshop at 4pm. Written by Patrick Marber, directed by Sean Turner and starring Michael Armstrong, Andrew Fettes and local Actor and Film Director, Freddie Hill, it’s a haunting and humorous play about the dying romance of the great English game and the tender, savage love that powers it. The story follows small time semi-pro football, the nonleague. A world away from the wealth and the television cameras. A young player touched with brilliance arrives from nowhere. An ambitious manager determines to make him his own and the old soul of the club still has dreams of glory. Here’s what people said: If you’re a play-goer but not a football-goer you’ll enjoy The Red Lion and if you spend plenty of time on the terraces but not in

theatres you’ll also have a good time. It’s a three-hander about loss and rivalry with plenty of humour thrown in and some knowing references to behindthe-scenes skullduggery as two club stalwarts each plot to influence a promising young player in different ways. Horsham Battle of the Bands celebrates bumper 27th year People turned out in force to support and enjoy this year’s Horsham Battle of the Bands ‘Cover Acts’ and ‘Original Bands’ finals in the Human Nature Garden on 17 th August. Horsham student crowned winner of the Battle of the Bands Music student, Liam Carter of Southwater, has been crowned the winner of this year’s Horsham Battle of the Bands Acoustic Originals. Liam, who is entirely selftaught, took to the stage at The Rec Rooms to perform his own material in a 30-minute acoustic guitar set. The 18-year-old was up against nine other artists and bands in this highly-competitive annual event. The decision on choosing a winner was a two-part process – the People’s Choice Polls where the public could cast votes which were then dovetailed with the votes of a panel of expert judges at the live event. Liam said: “I’ve grown up in Horsham so winning this competition means so much to me. When I left school I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do but

when my brother Kieran, who is a professional cellist, suggested I auditioned at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford I thought I would try it. I was accepted unconditionally for its Extended Diploma Songwriting course and I’ve just completed my first year. “My performance career only started at an open mic night a year ago at the George and Dragon in Dragons Green, and since then I’ve sung at gigs, weddings and other open mic nights. As part of winning this competition, I will be recording two tracks, one of which will be released, which is massively exciting. Chancellor confirms consideration of AAT Stamp Duty proposal ahead of 2019 Budget In his first interview as Chancellor, published in The Times, Sajid Javid MP has confirmed he is considering the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) recommendation to switch Stamp Duty liability from the buyer to the seller. AAT has been campaigning for this change for several years, met Boris Johnson to discuss the plans earlier this summer and has already had an exchange of correspondence with the new Chancellor on the idea. The organisation has also engaged with numerous civil servants, special advisers and politicians from across the political divide on the issue. Phil Hall, AAT Head of Public Affairs & Public Policy, said: “AAT is naturally pleased that the Chancellor has publicly acknowledged he is giving serious consideration to our proposals. The week started off at the Club’s historic ground on Henfield Common versus Lindfield, Henfield bowling the visitors out for 154 runs with the wickets shared, Dan Woodward taking four catches

Henfield then squeaked home with one wicket to spare, scoring 155 for 9 with James Hampton hitting a four to secure victory, despite Lindfield’s Benji Parry taking 4-25. Next came a trip to Pagham, where Henfield were inserted and set a very demanding target with 232-7 from their 42 overs, Dan Woodward making his maiden century – 105. Pagham fell 40 runs short, Asmus Minchell leading the bowling with 3-17 from five overs. On the third day Littlehampton came to the Common, where Henfield posted a massive 323 for the loss of just two wickets, Dan Woodward scoring a second ton, retiring not out on 108, with Asmus Minchell notching up

Two winners for Mickel Motorsport Motor Sport Martin Read - Sports Reporter Leicestershire’s Donington Park National Circuit produced six of the very best from the Legends Cars National Championship with MRF Tyres over the previous weekend, kicking off the second half of the season in grand style. Reigning five-time champion, Faygate’s John Mickel got onto the podium, a near 30-car grid wowing the thousands of spectators in attendance. But, Sutton Coldfield’s Miles Rudman moved to the top of the championship standings with a slender 20 point lead over Mickel. There were numerous star performances up and down the order and qualifying on Saturday morning set the scene for how hotly contested the weekend’s action was going to be with some incredibly close timings. With fantastically competitive action throughout, in Heat Two, Mickel moved ahead in lap five, only for Smith to grab the lead on the eighth tour before Mickel hit the front with a lap to go. Going into the final lap it was anyone’s guess who would come out on top, but Mickel was just shaded on the run in to the flag. For the eagerly awaited Final on day one, James Hall-Morton (Cleckheaton) seized the early advantage but was bundled down to fifth on lap three. Another shuffle of the order occurred on lap five, but with Rudman looking good, leading onto the 12th and last lap, he was elbowed to fifth, Mickel bursting through to take it by a fraction. On the Sunday, midway down Craner Curves a multi-car tangle in the midfield separated the pack, then, subsequently, Parker moved into the lead at the chicane on lap five. But, in Heat Three, on a track still slippery from earlier rain, King was forced to retire after a tangle with Mickel, who, although third, reduced the gap to 1.5 seconds during the closing stages In Sunday’s Final, Mickel deliv-

ered an impressive drive to fourth after being forced to start from the pitlane. Just three laps into the race he was already on the cusp of the top 10 and at the flag he was only a second shy of the podium. Saturday Final Winner John Mickel said: “It was nice to take a win and we had a good weekend overall, the car was good so now we just need to go again at Snetterton next time out and be consistent there as well. What happened in race two on Sunday was unfortunate, it is what it is so we just need to move forward.” While, Sunday Final winner Paul Simmons paid tribute to his Mickel Motorsport base, saying: “What a race! We managed to get the drive out of the chicane at the end on the final lap, so I’m happy about that as it was really close. Horsham also started badly, and although there was a partial recovery – to 106-5 – the last five wickets fell for 23 runs, Imran Shah and Harris Webb claiming three victims each, Slinfold winning by 85 runs, leaving Horsham rooted to the bottom of the table. But, Roffey consolidated, going on to win the Premiership in 2014, at Preston Nomads, dethroning the holders, who had won the league six times in the preceding eight years. That was largely dismissed as a fluke and Roffey continued to be largely ignored, but they won the title again in 2015 – against a Middleton side including Jofra Archer – and again in 2016, becoming one of only three teams with a hat trick of wins since the start of the league in 1971. Roffey were runner up in 2017, the year that they first won the Sussex Cup and continued their fine run in National competitions, reaching T20 finals day at Derby. They regained the league title last season, and, this year they are back at Hove for the Sussex Cup Final, which they controversially lost last year with the scores level. When Roffey met Preston Nomads at Fulking in June, the game was rained off after 42 overs, with no result and the weather was difficult for the return match, very heavy overnight rain delaying the start, but hats off to um-

pires Dunford and French, whose positive attitude, backed by teams wanting to play, got the game going, on a 38 overs a side basis, at 1.30 despite damp underfoot conditions. Roffey won the toss, soon losing a wicket and subsequently getting to 79-4, with Nomads, bowling well, the happier of the two sides. Enter skipper Matt Davies to bat with the in-form Rohit Jagota. The pair put on 159 runs for the fifth wicket, negating turn and lift. Jagota’s superb unbeaten 113 contained 12 fours, and 5 sixes, bombarding Northolmes School and neighbouring gardens. Davies brought up his 50 with a six before being dismissed for a 57 ball 64. The 250 run target was always going to be challenging in view of Roffey’s bowling options, especially as Nomads were a batsman short, Will Wright withdrawing after injuring his knee in the warm up. Bowling with pace down the hill, James Pearce (2-35) accounted for Nathan Poole, before Ben Manenti dismissed former Roffey player Usman Khan, whose wild swipe gave wicketkeeper Jibran Khan one of his four victims, Manenti taking two more wickets to finish with 3-28. Although there was subsequent resistance and aggression, from 114-6 too much remained to be done and three late

Reflecting on Roffey’s latest title win, Chairman Josh Fleming (skipper when they won the league for the first time), told the District Post; “Its great to win it with two games to go, rather than having to rely on the last game!” Skipper Matt Davies said: “Fantastic! Although we’re a bit subdued because we knew we’d virtually won it last week. Now we want to go on to win the Cup as well.” Batsman Mike Norris added: “Its great to be back at Roffey and I hope we can finish the season unbeaten.” While overseas player Ben Manenti told us: “I’m not surprised ! I’d love to return to Roffey next season.” Preston Nomads’ Captain Dan Phillips paid tribute, saying: “Roffey are such a good side with a great bowling attack.” It was not a good weekend for Nomads – on Sunday they lost in the Semi Final of the Sussex Cup, meaning that Roffey will play Eastbourne in the final at Hove, under lights on September 8th On Saturday, in their penultimate league game of the season, Roffey travel to Middleton, against whom, in the earlier home match, they held on for a nail-biting draw with 9 wickets down and 35 runs adrift.

MCC Horsham visits provide rich entertainment Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Last week the MCC sent two sides to play Horsham for a day of highly entertaining cricket. The full car park confirmed the popularity of the event and the Club’s new caterers (La Creperie) provided a delicious lunch and tea, savoured by many members from past successful seasons at the Club. The games could not have been more entertaining - the men’s teams including Chris Baker, Will Howard, Luke Marshall, Mark Nash and Michael Thornely from Horsham’s 2005 National Cup winning side at Lord’s, alongside Horsham’s former legbreak wizard, multi cricket award winning Michael Munday and last season’s overseas player Mika Ekstrom. A brother and sister revelled in playing for their respective MCC sides and representatives of current Horsham sides, featuring some exciting emerging talent were also much in evidence. In contrast to the very disappointing on field results from Horsham’s sides this season, this was a golden day at Horsham Cricket Club, again underlining how well they organise and put on such showcase events in their attractive surroundings. The men’s game ended in a tie, while the ladies’ match was equally exciting - finishing as a draw with Horsham 9 wickets down.

With a maximum of 90 points available from the last three matches, they were 59 points behind eighth-placed Cuckfield, so even with three big wins, results elsewhere would have been critical. But, as the week before, having got themselves into a seemingly winning position, the frailty of Horsham’s batting and lack of depth of bowling resurfaced and they perished by a distance with almost 12 overs remaining, going down to Division 2 as a result. One of the founders of the league in 1971, Horsham have won the title eight times, lastly in 2004, and they have also won the Sussex Cup on a record 13 occasions, most recently in 2016. So, relegation is unpalatable, and all the more embarrassing because the fortunes of highly successful near neighbours Roffey, comparative newcomers to the Premiership, could not be more different. But, Horsham’s difficulties have been apparent in recent

seasons, so there was an air of inevitability about what is hoped to be Horsham’s temporary demise. Yet, things could so easily have ended differently – in the first game of the season they beat last year’s runner up, Eastbourne, by 9 wickets and later thrashed the then leaders Brighton & Hove by the same margin, and they also beat Mayfield, but failing to overcome Three Bridges at Horsham when they were on toast at 81-9 chasing 246, and somehow losing to Middleton after setting them 341 to win, followed by an inability to get 143 against

Naturally, I am very disappointed and saddened by our relegation, taking us out of the top flight for the first time fellow relegation candidate Mayfield, proving all too costly. At Three Bridges heavy overnight rain reduced the match to a 34 overs a side contest and, after inserting the hosts, in no time Horsham had reduced them to 13-5, impressive young left-armer James Brehaut taking four of the wickets and Sussex’s George Garton the other. Surely this was a game that Horsham could win? Unfortunately not – although Bridges stuttered to 53-7, a 51 run eighth

stand took them to 104-8, Oliver Blandford scoring 52. Then twenties from tailenders Tom Blandford and Arran Brown, boosted by 21 extras, got Bridges up to 153-9, a far bigger target than seemed likely, considering Brehaut’s 4-22 and two wickets apiece from Garton and Johnny Whiting. Replying, Horsham got off to a poor start, but recovered to 45-2, only for six batsmen to get just a single run between them. Skipper Michael Thornely top-scored with 26 and Paul Williams made 21, extras contributing 17 as Horsham subsided to 88 all out. As in recent seasons, Horsham have been unable to put out a settled, consistent side, causing them to raid their second and third teams for players, whose results have suffered accordingly. They have an excellent wicket, outstanding facilities and now need to find and retain players wanting to play at the attractive, historic ground, Cricket Chairman Richard Marshall, telling the District Post: “Naturally, I am very disappointed and saddened by our relegation, taking us out of the top flight for the first time. We are determined to bounce back and are already putting plans in place designed to restore our position and bring further success to the club.” On Saturday, with only pride to play for, Horsham return home for the last time this season taking on East Grinstead, and hoping to avenge their 60 run defeat in the corresponding away match earlier in the season.

August 11th was a big day at Billingshurst Cricket Club - Jim Burroughs’ always muchrevered President’s Day - with two T20 games, organiser Roger Lusted telling the District Post: “The two matches were very close. My 1980’s Vets – celebrating the 30th anniversary of the 2nd XIs famous Arun Valley League victory and the Club’s last tour of Norfolk - lost by 7 runs to Shaka Shambrook’s Vets XI, and Ben Williams’ XI beat the Presidents XI by just 3 runs. So there was plenty of entertaining, closely fought cricket played in the right spirit and it was great to welcome back so many familiar faces at our very special Club. The whole day was a great success with plenty of reminiscing and Jim and Angie Burroughs providing us with a superb lunchtime spread and some wonderful homemade cakes for tea. Now we’re looking forward to reprising our Norfolk forays with the ‘Old Boys’ tour in September !”

Premier League round up – matches on Saturday August 17th Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Away from the Horsham and Roffey matches, the match of the day was at Cuckfield, but first, here is news of the end of Brighton’s title pretensions, when, at their Nevill Sports Ground they were inserted by East Grinstead, but could only score 193-8 off their 50 over allocation. Brighton put on 100 for the first wicket, openers Hugo Gillespie and Bryce Hounsome making 58 and 39, respectively, but then only Curtis Ford and Tim Jarvis got into the twenties, former Sussex quick Lewis Hatchett taking 4-14. Replying, Grinstead knocked off the runs for the loss of three wickets with six overs to spare, mainly thanks to an unbeaten 84 from Tom Haynes, supported by 37 from wicketkeeper Leo Cammish. Mayfield were also hoping for a win to move them up the table, and, after being put in by Eastbourne, they made 202-4 in a game reduced to 34 overs a side, Kaushal Silva scoring 80 and

Harry Lloyd 64. When Eastbourne replied, David Hooper took 4-29, but prolific James Hockley made 70 and Ben Twine 51, sealing the five wicket win off 31.2 overs. At Cuckfield, the hosts won the toss and invited Middleton to bat, posting 266-6 off 50 overs, skipper Sean Heather scoring 89 and Mahesh Rawat 69 not out. Then, in an exciting finish, Cuckfield were all out – for 266 – off the last available ball after Joe Cambridge had posted 78, Joe Ludlow 61 and Marcus Campopiano 51, three wickets each from Matthew Reynolds, and Sean Heather, two from Harry Hovey and two run outs securing the tie, with Norman Wisdom’s grandson Gregory failing to make his ground at the death to leave the scores level. With two games to play, Brighton stay second, 85 points behind champions Roffey, while East Grinstead are third, three adrift of Brighton, with Middleton fourth, Eastbourne seventh and Cuckfield eighth with 264, 36 more than relegation threatened Mayfield.

YMCA go through in FA Cup – next round on Saturday Saturday August 10 – FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round Horsham YMCA 2 1 Croydon Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter On a day more akin to Autumn with blustery conditions from the off, YM Manager Peter Buckland was able to name first choice goalkeeper Aaron Jeal after an appendix operation had denied Jeal pre-season preparation and first week availability. Luke Gedling, though, was not able to start after picking up an injury at Alfold in midweek. Bouncing back from their challenging first week of the season, YM were quickly out of the blocks and took an early lead when Martin Smith latched onto a through ball to put the hosts ahead after 5 minutes against his former club. The first half saw a good opening spell of pressure from YM with the team seeking a second goal, but the wind was hampering both

sides, the score remaining 1-0 in YM’s favour at the break. The second half also began in lively fashion for YM and they picked up a penalty which was despatched with pace by Dean Carden to put YM 2 up soon after the restart. However, Croydon rallied well and started to build up momentum, testing Jeal, but he kept the visitors threat at bay until the second penalty of the game was awarded on 71 minutes, which, on conversion, gave the visitors an impetus to push on for an equaliser and a replay. But, the YM defence held firm with a reaction save from Jeal in the last minute securing passage to the Preliminary Round when YM host Egham Town of the Combined Counties League Premier Division at Gorings Mead this Saturday. In their Extra Preliminary Round tie Egham drew 2-2 with Lancing and the teams remained level, at 4-4, in the rematch, which was decided by a penalty shoot out, which Egham won 3-4 at the south coast.

Saturday August 17 – The BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division Enfield Town 1 4 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter After two 1-1 draws in a tough start, Horsham were thrilled to pull off their first Isthmian League win of this campaign, fol-

lowing their promotion, especially as Enfield Town are widely tipped to be involved in the challenge to move up, come the end of the season. Horsham Manager Dom di Paola had declared himself happy with Horsham’s performances prior to the trip to Enfield’s Queen Elizabeth 11 Stadium, but after Horsham’s 4-1 win - which left Enfield stunned after their mid week

trouncing of Bishops Strotford 5 nil - he was absolutely delighted. And it was particularly pleasing that Horsham produced such a dominant result after Enfield had drawn level and were pushing to storm ahead. The hosts harried Horsham in the early exchanges, but the foray came to nothing before home goalkeeper Nathan McDonald negated Chris Smith’s effort. Enfield then

blazed over, ahead of Horsham’s Charlie Harris bending a free kick just round the post. Smith was soon in action again, but again McDonald was on hand, and then Harris was too aerial. Jon Muelba tested the Hornets’ defence, but it was Horsham who took the lead when Smith latched onto Lea Dawson’s through ball to shoot directly at McDonald, who somehow contrived to push the ball behind him into

the goal, Horsham leading 1 nil at the break. As expected, Enfield came back out fighting and, before the hour mark, had equalised, Ken Charles heading in from close range. Seeking further success, Enfield kept pressing, Hornets’ keeper George Bentley keeping them at bay, aided by some wayward volleys, mistakes that the home side came to regret when Horsham scored twice in double quick time. First Harris took advantage of a botched clearance, crashing it home. Then Kieran Lavery’s free kick was parried out for Smith to put Horsham 3-1 up. This seemed to nullify Enfield, who were forced to concentrate on preventing further Horsham goals. Horsham, though, put the result beyond all doubt when Zac Newton scythed through to get the fourth. In the FA Cup Preliminary Round this Saturday, Horsham travel to East London’s Mile End Stadium to take on Tower Hamlets. Then, switching to league action on Bank Monday (26th), they are on the road again, to Lewes’ Dripping Pan

Horsham battle through to hard fought draw at Bognor Tuesday August 13 – The BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division Bognor Regis Town 1 1 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter In unaccustomed territory, Horsham were happy to come away from this mid week floodlit game against strong Bognor Regis Town at Nyetimber Lane with another 1-1 draw, from the second of their opening two matches following promotion. Bognor created the first opportunity in the eighth minute, but Stuart Green’s header was too aerial, shortly afterwards the same player broke through to supply Dan Smith, but he was unable to get the ball past George Bentley in the Horsham goal. With the Hornets taking control of the game, midfielder Charlie Harris then unleashed a speculative, unthreatening distant attempt before Rob

O’Toole centred to Lee Harding, but Bognor keeper Charlie Searle was not unduly challenged. Horsham, though, kept pressing, O’Toole and Harris combining to harry the hosts, but again Searle thwarted the visitors. Jimmy Muitt then really tested Bentley with a rasping drive, ahead of the keeper’s legs keeping out Smith’s effort. While, at the other end, Searle thwarted another Horsham attack, depriving Kieran Lavery’s close range attempt. But, with half time beckoning, O’Toole powerfully headed home a corner to give Horsham a 1-nil lead at the break. Knowing that a single goal was unlikely to be enough, Horsham opened strongly and five minutes into the second half a build up culminated with Zach Newton but, with defenders in attendance, the winger could not generate a sufficiently forceful shot. Bentley then kept out Smith’s golden opportunity, and with Horsham obliged

to unfurl long range shots, Lavery had repeated off target bids. With Bognor now in command, James Crane was off-target, but Horsham’s lead had little further life, Tyrell Mitford conjuring up a searing rocket for the Rocks to equalise 12 minutes from time. Horsham reacted positively, Jack Brivio inducing a full length denial from Searle, yet, with Mitford on the rampage, Bognor were intent on turning the screw, and it took a spectacular save from Bentley to keep the score level. In the dying moments, Mitford tormented Horsham again, with Tommy Leigh also causing problems, but Bentley rounded off his excellent game by keeping them at bay, Horsham being relieved to leave with a hard-earned point. On Saturday the Hornets are on the road again, with a lengthy trip to North London to take on Enfield Town
