Council says ‘no’ to new Horsham FC ground

Horsham district council refused Horsham Football Club’s planning application for a new ground and clubhouse on Tuesday, January 20. Members of the council voted 13-9 for refusal of the application with one abstention despite the planning officer’s recommendation the development should go ahead. The plan for the Hop Oast site was to include two all weather pitches, a clubhouse, dug outs, stands and lighting along with a car park. The club would also use a number of parking spaces in the Horsham park and ride adjacent to the site as overflow. There were a number of objections from councillors, the main being access to the site for pedestrians and cyclists, noise and lighting disturbance to nearby horses and concerns the clubhouse was too large for purpose and it was suggested there were plans for commercial use. Supporters and objectors spoke in front of the council. Mr John Burroughs, Sport development officer at Collyer’s sixth form college spoke

about how a new club would allow Horsham Football Club to share the facilities with the college and various junior clubs in the district. A second application on the night for 57 homes at the Holbrook Club site was also refused. The Holbrook application approval would have been necessary for the funding of the Hop Oast development, and both plans would needed to have been approved if a new club was to be built. The new club would also have allowed Horsham FC to grant a 25 year lease to the Holbrook Club and Horsham FC would then contribute £200,000 to the Holbrook club for improvements to facilities. Councillor Claire Vickers said the development of the new club would not be within council policy of developing in countryside, however she asked if community benefits would outweigh policy. Councillor Roy Cornell, in support of the new ground said: “On championship and Premier Leagues level, the clubs work as facilities for the community. Yes, they earn money but this keep the game going. I support this and I want to see Horsham Football Club established in this location.” Continued on page 2

Dave Smith Sports Editor Following the decision by Horsham District Council to refuse the Horsham FC Hop Oast planning application the club now faces a very uncertain existence and in addition the long term future of The Holbrook Club has possibly been endangered. The clubs sharing arrangement at Horsham YMCA’s Gorings Mead ground is due to cease at the end of this season, although a further season long extension taking the

club to May 2016 is believed to be on the table. Following last night’s decision there is now major uncertainty regarding the clubs future beyond May 2016 and its board and management have a difficult and demanding time ahead to maintain the club in its present form, if it all, in the years ahead. The granting of the application was dependent on another application for a development on ground at The Holbrook Club, this application was also refused. Approval of both of the applications

The proposed Hop Oast Site

would have guaranteed not only the Horsham FC facility at Hop Oast but also the granting of a long term lease along with a large monetary donation for refurbishment and improvements at The Holbrook Club. A statement on the Horsham FC website from club chairman Kevin Borrett stated ““Firstly let me thank everyone who turned out tonight to support Horsham Football Club in the planning application, and the countless number of fans who couldn’t be present but have been so supportive in other ways including their messages of support. I’m not going to hide the fact that all the board members are bitterly disappointed at the

outcome of the new ground application decision, for which we had hoped to secure a favourable decision at the first attempt. As the two applications were linked it was then inevitable there would be a shortened discussion on our plans for The Holbrook Club as that was not going to be approved in isolation.” Horsham FC CEO and Vice Chairman John Lines said to The District Post “The decision last night has put the plans for the future of Horsham FC in disarray and has potentially threatened the future of The Holbrook Club. We will be meeting in the next few days to discuss what action we will be taking, but the fight goes on”

County Council oppose expansion at Gatwick

W

est Sussex County Council has agreed its official response to a public consultation into options for additional airport capacity in the South East – taking into account the concerns raised by objectors to the Gatwick option. At a specially convened full council meeting on Monday, January 19, the authority approved a 20 page document of improvements that it believes need to made before any proposal to expand Gatwick is submitted to government. Protestors gathered outside the county councils Horsham offices prior to the meeting and sang a protest song about the proposed expansion at the airport. The final decision about additional airport capacity will be made by the next government. Pieter Montyn, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: “The issue of a second runway at Gatwick is an extremely emotive subject and that played out at today’s meeting. “It was only right that all members of West Sussex County Council were given the opportunity to debate and put forward their views, and those of their residents as well. That’s democracy. “In terms of the response to the consultation, the Airports Commission at no point asked respondents whether or not they agree that an additional runway is needed. Nor does it ask us whether we have a preference as to where additional capacity should be provided. “It asks us to comment on the methodology and evidence base of the Airports Commission’s initial assessments, and to put forward improvements that we believe should be made. Our response contains a raft of improvements that we believe need to be made by both Gatwick and the government.” Following approval of the official response, West Sussex County Council held a vote to determine its position. It was agreed, via a major-

Sally Pavey ity vote, that the authority would now oppose expansion at the airport following the high level of opposition that has been raised locally over the environmental impact and infrastructure implications of a second runway at Gatwick. However, unanimous support was given to the Council continuing to engage with the government, residents, businesses and Gatwick Airport Limited to ensure the county gets the best deal possible from whatever future decision is made by the government. WSCC’s position opposing expansion does not form part of the Council’s response to the consultation. The consultation response will now be sent to the Airports Commission for consideration. The Airports Commission is expected to make a recommendation to the Government regarding airport expansion and capacity later this year. Sally Pavey, Chair of Communities Against Gatwick Noise Emissions (CAGNE) said: “This is wonderful news, councillors have seen through the spin of Gatwick Airport and undertaken their own research to represent the county and its residents by voting against supporting a second runway at Gatwick. “Gatwick can no longer use the WSCC support to illustrate that local communities support the ex-

pansion as they have been doing constantly which is excellent news. Had Gatwick taken the time to engage with us residents they would know of our concerns about the three new flight paths over West Sussex, areas that have never been affected by aircraft noise before, and the lack of infrastructure that exists now. There simply is not the funding in the local authorities budgets, and nor will there be, to finance the infrastructure for an airport larger than Heathrow with Gatwick not offering any substantial funding. The detrimental affect of urbanisation of our rural county would be devastating and devaluing, it was clear from today’s meeting that Gatwick is not trusted to deliver its ice-cream promises. “This is a very good day for the county and for its residents and we hope the message will arrive loud and clear with the Airports Commission that the residents of West Sussex do not support a 2nd runway at Gatwick and now our council are, at last, truly representing us voters.” Brendon Sewill, Chair of Gatwick Area Conservation Campaign (GACC) said: “We are delighted by the result today as it clearly illustrates to the Airports Commission that residents do not support a second runway and nor does its council in a 37 to 26 vote by councillors today to oppose the expansion.”

Horsham mum backs first aid campaign Attempted robbery at 36-year-old Horsham mum Trudi Scrase, who has been a St John Ambulance (SJA) volunteer since she was 11-years-old is backing a campaign which demonstrates how to save a choking baby. In February 2012, Trudi’s daughter Lucy, who was just nine weeks old at the time, was suffering from a cold. Trudi woke up at about 2.50am to find that Lucy didn’t appear to be breathing. Trudi said: “She was quite grey, very blue around the mouth and had become quite floppy. A small cough would normally have cleared any phlegm but on this occasion it wasn’t enough. I went into overdrive, dialling 999 and began slapping her on the back to clear her airway. It was really scary. I remember sinking into the sofa afterwards thinking she’s going to be OK.” Lucy is now three years old and Trudi, who is the unit manager for SJA in Cobham, has baby number two on the way. “It made me think afterwards if I hadn’t been first aid trained she may not be here. I think it’s really important to know what to do, particularly as a parent. Being pregnant now with a new baby coming, I’m confident with the training I’ve had that if that was to happen again the baby would be OK.” Trudi’s story has been filmed to support the campaign and will be shared on YouTube and social media by the charity. St John Ambulance has revealed that over four-fifths of parents in Brighton (83%) don’t know the correct technique for saving their baby from choking, despite it being a major fear (61%) and 37% having witnessed it. Responding to these concerns, the nation’s leading first aid charity has launched its new campaign, including a star-studded animated

Billingshurst pupils revive a dying art

Billingshurst pupils with Lynda Lewis Kate Clifford Billingshurst Primary School Community Association

many consider it a dying art in our modern and hectic times. As part of the year group’s term project called ‘Under the Sea’, Lynda Lewis came up with the idea of combining painting and sewing to enable each pupil to design and create a unique sample that could be used to embellish the quilt. Each child was given a piece of fabric which they painted, before sewing their designs on. Mrs Lewis overlocked the edges of the fabric and the children stitched their designs in place, adding beads, buttons and sequins to finish them off. The finished quilt contains 90 different pieces of work, of varying sizes, representing over 100 hours of work by staff and pupils making this work of art both unique and treasured by everyone involved. Mrs Lynda Lewis said: “I’m always looking for an excuse to get children sewing, and everyone seemed so enthusiastic. When I was at school, sewing and knitting were part of the curriculum and I feel that children don’t always have enough access to these basic skills within this computer generation. Aside from the obvious benefits of improved fine motor skills, I believe that sewing and knitting are almost meditative and can have a positive impact on children’s emotional wellbeing. The children were delighted with the result. It was lovely to see the look of pride and delight on their faces as they found and pointed out their own contribution.”

Tree fall survivor featured in TV medical documentary A retired engineer from Horsham who survived a 15ft fall while pruning trees at his home is to be featured on Channel 4’s 24 Hours in A&E on January 28. The Royal Television Society Award-winning documentary series continues from its new home at St George’s Hospital in London – one of Britain’s most advanced and busiest A&E departments. Filmed around the clock by 104 cameras, the series captures dramatic and emotional stories of love, life and loss on the frontline of the NHS. Next week’s episode tells the story of 69-year-old Bill Ovenden who fell from a ladder while pruning a Leylandii hedge at his home in Brooks Green. His sister Margaret, an ex-nurse, called 999 and the air ambulance was sent because he had suspected multiple fractures and difficulty breathing. Margaret said: “He prides himself on doing everything himself, saying, ‘Don’t spend money on that, I can do it’.” The air ambulance landed in Bill’s field and the helicopter’s doctor and paramedic treated him at the scene before flying him to St George’s. 24 Hours in A&E shows him arriving at the Major Trauma Centre where scans reveal he has a col-

Bill arriving at St George’s lapsed lung. He luckily avoided more serious injury after landing on a pile of grass cuttings. Bill was one of the first patients to be airlifted to St George’s following the opening of its rooftop helipad in April. He has since made a full recovery and is now planning an afternoon tea party at his home to raise funds for the air ambulance which relies almost entirely on donations. 24 Hours in A&E is on Channel 4 on Wednesday, January 28, at 9pm. Year four pupils at Billingshurst Primary School have been working with their very own sewing celebrity, Lynda Lewis from BBC 2’s The Great British Sewing Bee 2014 to revive the art of quilting. With a history dating back to the 12th Century when crusaders introduced quilting to Europe, the craft was particularly popular in Victorian England when quilts were frequently given as commemorative gifts to be handed down from generation to generation. Once considered an important and large part of a family’s life due to the time and effort involved in creating a quilt,

MP supports St Mary’s fundraising lunch to fight Ebola

A

rundel & South Downs MP Nick Herbert joined a fundraising lunch in Pulborough to raise money for a school in Sierra Leone on Saturday, January 17. St Mary’s CE School in Pulborough has formed a strong link to a school in the city of Kenema in Sierra Leone, a country which is affected by the Ebola virus. The link was encouraged by the Chichester Diocese and the connection has been made via the charity Education West Africa (EWA). The charity was founded by former teachers Rod and Penelope Sharman who live in Angmering. Saturday’s lunch, which was organised by Pulborough resident Ruth Brown and held at Pulborough Village Hall, raised £1,300 for a school which St Mary’s is helping

in Sierra Leone after Daisy Waring, a teacher at St Mary’s, spoke about her visit to the school and shared some inspiring stories from her trip. St Mary’s School has previously been raising money which has been added to by local and national companies to support the purchase of school desks, redecoration of the school, and uniforms. In Sierra Leone education is provided for free from the aged of six but only if children have a full uniform. The uniforms cost between £5 and £7, but this is the equivalent to a month’s food for many families in the country. This year’s fundraising has a new and more urgent focus following the spread of the Ebola virus, which has caused the school to be closed. Money raised from the lunch will be spent on buckets, soap, sanitiser

and chlorine to support improved hygiene to help prevent the spread of the virus. A new well is also being constructed to provide clean water for the school, another way in which the spread of Ebola can be mitigated. Pulborough resident John Denison has been actively involved with the charity. Four years ago John decided that he would celebrate his 70th birthday by walking 89 miles from Rye to Horsham in return for sponsorship. His remarkable efforts have raised almost £2,500 for EWA. John has also made the trip to Sierra Leone to visit the schools in Kenema. Ruth Brown said: “I think we were all moved by what our school children and their teachers told us about the situation in Kenema, and impressed by what they had already done to help the children there im-

prove their own lives.” Nick Herbert said: “I was very pleased to support this lunch for such a good cause. It’s amazing that a primary school has raised these sums for a charity, and very good

for local children to understand the lives of others around the world. “Hearing about the impact of Ebola on the school in Sierra Leone was a stark reminder if the terrible devastation which this disease has caused.”

There are now approximately 26,000 residents aged over 65 throughout the Horsham district and the money raised from this event will enable the charity to continue to provide vital support to local older people. Angie De Ath, Community Fundraiser said: “We are incredibly grateful to all the local business

such as Cordek, Dairy Crest, Barclays Bank, Harwood, Biffa ,Arun and of course South Lodge and many others who are supporting this event by providing sponsorship or donating raffle prizes. There are still sponsorship possibilities available or businesses can simply buy a table and entertain staff, clients or friends and enjoy a wonderful evening.” Tickets for this fantastic event are £75- contact Deborah Johnston, organiser at: jdeborah44@yahoo.com If any local businesses are interested in supporting the event through sponsorship or donation there is still time to arrange this. Farlington students take a trip to the Alps

Navy Cadets take to the air Few experiences match the adrenaline-charged excitement that new pilots feel when they are allowed to take control of an aircraft for the first time. Cadets from Christ’s Hospital were recently able to experience this thrill for themselves following flight training provided by the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm. Ten cadets from the School’s cadet force were given the chance to sample the exhilarating life of a navy pilot over the Christmas break during a two-day visit to Royal Navy Air Station Yeovilton. Prior to the cadets taking to the air, navy pilots provided tuition in the basics of aircraft operation, reading the instruments and operating the parachute in an emergency. The students also had the chance to sit in on that day’s pre-flight briefing, which included details of the meteorological situation and other flight activities being conducted on the air station. There was a nervy excitement amongst the cadets as they were strapped into the propellerdriven Grob Tutor aircraft. Experienced navy pilots taxied the aeroplanes before accelerating down the runway for takeoff. The cadets were then given control of the aircraft to practice the basic manoeuvres they had

been taught. The navy pilots also took the aircraft through some stomach-churning aerobatics. While on the ground, the cadets were also allowed to observe the busy operations of a naval air station from its Air Traffic Control Operations Room. The view from the tower gave a real impression of the scale of the air station’s operations. The cadets spent the night on the station and enjoyed beating the staff in a close-fought game of tenpin bowling. Second Lieutenant Helen Goddard said: “Some of the cadets were quite nervous taking the controls for the first time, but they were all smiling on their return to ground with both the excitement and the achievement of what they had done. I was hugely proud of the drive and eagerness with which the cadets approached the challenge”. The Combined Cadet Force provides a fun, varied and challenging co-curricular programme in leadership, military and adventure training. It aims to develop important skills for later life including leadership, responsibility, self-reliance, endurance, determination and service to others. It is one of a number of extra-curricular activities provided at Horshambased Christ’s Hospital.

Work could start on Morrisons in Billingshurst ‘early this year’ A spokesperson for the supermarket chain Morrisons has confirmed to The District Post that the company’s planning application and licence for a Morrisons M Local (convenience store) in Billing-

shurst was approved last year. The spokesperson said: “The developer should be making a start on the site early this year. The store will focus on selling fresh food including fruit and veg, meat and fish.”

Lidl confirms an interest in Horsham Lidl, the European supermarket chain, has told The District Post that they have an interest in Horsham. The spokesperson for the company could not provide any further details at this stage such as which sites it is interested in. Lidl was founded in Germany in the 1930s and the first store was opened in 1973. It is one of the largest grocery retailers in Europe and a Lidl can be found in nearly every European country. Lidl came to the UK in 1994 and has more than 600 stores here.

On December 13, 2014, 49 pupils and 6 members of staff went on the Farlington School ski trip to Serre Chevalier in south eastern France. This annual event is open to all pupils in Years 7 to13 and provides many girls with their first opportunity to ski. Ella Bubb from Year 8 said: “Despite the snowfall not looking too good before we went, it snowed for most of the week meaning the skiing conditions were great. There was a variety of runs for us to try through the week. There was even a snow park which was so much fun! Our instructors were very supportive, as well as funny, meaning that by the end of the week I had improved greatly as well as having enjoyed myself!” Ellie Burnell-Price from the Up-

per Sixth also had a memorable trip: “It was such an amazing trip and I couldn’t have enjoyed myself more. I loved spending time with all the girls and learning a sport that, without this opportunity, I wouldn’t have been able to experience. I want to say a huge thank-you to the girls for being so welcoming, but I want to say an even bigger thank you to all the staff - Mrs Binns, Miss Currell, Mrs Hawkins, Mr and Mrs Higgs, Mr Snewin and, of course,

Miss Whittaker.” Sara Whittaker, Director of PE and Games at Farlington, who organised the trip, comments: “Each year we have a fantastic time on the ski trip and this year was no exception. As Ellie said, we do all become a ‘Farlington family’. The ski resort and instructors were excellent and the girls and staff got on tremendously well: a brilliant bonding opportunity. It introduced many of the girls to a sport they had never tried before, while others were coming for a second or third time. At Farlington we believe it is essential all girls find a fitness activity they enjoy and can participate in well beyond their school years. Lifelong participation in physical activity is our aim and, hopefully, skiing is something the girls will be able to pursue in the future.”

Parents and staff at St Mary’s learn lifesaving skills

A

governor led initiative saw the Horsham Community Responders (HCR) visit St Mary’s CofE Primary School for a three hour evening course for parents and staff to learn vital lifesaving skills. Participants were taken through CPR, choking, how to deal with a heart attack, using a defibrillator and aiding someone who is bleeding heavily. Marc Harrold and Hilary Humphrey led an informative course and did not hold back any punches in what performing some of these lifesaving skills were actually like in reality, something they have performed on many occasions themselves. Participants got stuck in and were very hands on, learning these essential skills.

Marcus Tyler-Moore, vice chair of governors, said: “We are always keen to reach out to the community and arrange useful events like these, this has been so successful we intend to book the HCR for further sessions in order to have as many of our parents trained as possible.” Marc Harrold, team leader and South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) senior associate trainer, said: “It is always good to pass on these potentially lifesaving skills through the British Heart Foundation Heartstart scheme and this was a great group to teach as they were lots of good questions asked while they tried doing CPR on the various mannequins.” If you are interested to learn more about Heartstart visit www.horshamresponders.org.

Horsham: A town of many names nik butler @loudmouthman

Since our town is clearly in the grip of some sort of rebranding exercise which appears to be motivated by the arrival of those new monolith signposts maybe it is time to address the names for spaces and streets within our town centre. East street has rapidly established itself as the Eat Street of Horsham; and despite the enterprising effort of a lone marketplace vendor the idea of Eat Street has begun to grow in our contemporary vernacular for local conversation. This in itself should considered no bad thing as it indicates a successful integration, and acceptance, into public conscious people focus on that part of town when they consider heading for a meal. Meanwhile the ever convoluted funding and development of West Street has lead to a new title, Waste Street; As we wonder just how much can be spent getting nowhere fast. The Causeway now carries the kitchen smells of cooked meat and grilled products and on particularly busy days the conditions may later leave it labelled the cough way. As for the Bisphopric, which is soon to become the John Lewis leg, with its extended carriage way and amended thoroughfare it maybe that the only consistent element for the town is the Carfax. It is somewhat ironic that the Carfax is now bereft of cars, much to its improvement, but care is

still required when frost arrives and ice returns to the steps and stones. Towns change, language change, and people change, and despite all attempts by planning and authority it is the community who selects the terms with which landmarks are

known. Shelleys Fountain certainly has a few unprintable labels and, no matter how many times I refer to it, I know of no one who remarks of the East end of Horsham town centre as ‘The Quadrant.’ The Forum will create a few blank looks from locals

until it is explained as ‘that space between TK Maxx and Sainsburys.’ That a place can enter the vernacular of everyday conversation from Yellow Brick Roads to Eat Street is more a testament to the attachment, for good or bad, that a place

can have upon the psyche of its residents. So as the new signboards arrive and the new roads are developed it maybe time for us to consider what name does Horsham and its streets wish to build for itself before the end of this decade.

Trees are a welcome addition to any garden, providing shade, colour and flower if chosen well. But they have other uses of which you may not have been aware so read on. This time of year is very much the marmite season. Some positively thrive in it, revelling in the crisp damp air. But other people find it oppressive, dull, cold and grey and thus feel slightly depressed. If that’s the case, perhaps you suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder. Not being one to google any malady and immediately diagnose the problem (I can hear my wife laugh in the background), there is much to be said for feeling low at this time of year, until you realise that for much of the daylight hours, you are wearing multiple layers, gloves, long socks, boots and a warm hat, leaving only a small area of the face exposed to UV. But before you reach for the bar of dark chocolate which has been undoubtedly proved to aid your mood, you may care to read that ironically, gardening can help with your mood, as long as you are prepared to get your hands cold and dirty. Science has over the past few

years turned its attention to the soil in quite a major way and what the Americans’ once simply called dirt is now possibly our saviour. Not only has science discovered microbes that act similar to antidepressants, but the scientists have recently learned of a microbe that acts as an anti-biotic. Most importantly an anti-biotic that has no natural resistance and which given we were on the verge of a global crisis is astounding. With the rise of bacterial infections and reported depressive episodes, perhaps we are all getting a little too clean? However, do not worry if you don’t like to get onto your knees to root around in the soil, there are alternatives. The Japanese have a word Shinrin-yoku, which roughly translated means ‘forest bathing’. Psychologists have studied the effects of walking in natural woodlands and have found it produces many health benefits. Not only does it help you get fit and shed some pounds, but it also releases dopamine and serotonin – both chemicals that make us happy.

It is also key in clinical rehabilitation therapies for those suffering from trauma or similar psychotic illness. We are lucky in Sussex as we live in what the Saxons named the Weald (woodland). Saint Leonard’s forest is an excellent and free resource for anybody living in Horsham, now of course happily dragon free. If you live further afield, Sidney wood at Alfold is excellent, as is ‘The Mens’ near Wisborough Green. Of course, there is also the Winkworth Arboretum or indeed the woodland at Nymans if you require something with named pedigree to impress your friends. In fact as I look at my map, there is no excuse for you to get out and enjoy a woodland walk. I can see, Tilgate Forest, Carroty Wood, Cow Wood, Leith Hill, Friday Street, Buchan Park, William’s Wood to name a small sample. If you are lucky and keep your eyes peeled, you may just see some early flowering delights such as snowdrops, aconites and lessercellandine, all wonderful plants and providers of nectar to bumble bees, which still forage on warmer days.

I joined Bluecoat Sports as a massively unconfident large lady on a huge mission to get fit and lose weight. I always thought I was too fat to exercise and did not want to join any classes or go to the gym. I decided I would start swimming and went down to take a look at the pool at Bluecoat Sports as I had heard good things. After having an initial tour by such a lovely member of staff who made me feel extremely comfortable in their environment, I decided I needed to give things a proper go! I started with a couple of classes a week and as I realised how lovely, friendly, professional, approachable and ‘real’ the instructors were, I was soon attending 5 classes a week. Even on the weeks where I felt I “couldn’t be bothered” the staff and Members always helped me to keep going. Bluecoat Sports is such a family friendly centre and I can honestly say, I’ve never known a Fitness Club like it! I still continue to exercise every week and after much encouragement, support and plenty of giggles, I’m eight and a half stone lighter! I am fitter, live a completely different lifestyle and now enjoy running about with my children! Louise Miah - 35 years

Horsham teenager records with Sussex Freemasons donate mobility scooters award winning musical cast

Horsham teenager Nathanael Landskroner, 16, recently joined members of National Youth Music Theatre’s 2014 company to record an original cast recording of an award winning musical. BRASS was commissioned by NYMT to commemorate the centenary of World War One and tells the true life story of the Leeds Pals and the Barnbow Lasses. The world premiere took place at City Varieties Music Hall in Leeds in August and the show recently won Best Musical Production 2014 in the UK Theatre Awards. Nathanael originated the role of Henry Holgate

and was the youngest in a cast of young people aged 15 - 23. Nathanal gave up his place at the X Factor boot camp to take part in BRASS. He gained 4 yes’s at Wembley Arena which placed him in the top 23 boys. Nathanael is looking forward to the recording which will take place in a London based studio this weekend. Nathanael said: “The team have been working hard to lay all the music tracks down with our original young musicians from the show and then it’s our turn to record all the vocals. BRASS was one of the best experiences of my life and the music

is incredible. We are all so delighted that we have this opportunity to make an original cast recording. I feel very privileged to have been part of this amazing musical.” Nathanael visited The Somme as part of his research for the show and retraced the steps of the original Leeds Pals. He has also commemorated the real Leeds Pal H Holgate who lost his life on July 1st 1916 in The Battle of The Somme. “I think it is very important to remember those who died and I am indebted to NYMT for taking me on a journey I will never forget. I hope BRASS lives on as it is a vital piece of our history and the music is so beautiful that it deserves to be heard by a wider audience.” Profits from the CD will go into the NYMT Bursary Fund which enables young actors like Nathanael to receive the first class training that NYMT offers. NYMT alumni include recent Golden Globe winning actor Eddie Redmayne and Jude Law. Anyone interested in supporting the cast recording csn visit www.nymt. org.uk. Nathanael’s debut single Braking In The Fast Lane is due to be released in the next few weeks. You can follow Nathanael on twitter @Natinfinitum and on Facebook www.facebook.com/nathanaelsaul.

To be recognised by your peers is a true testament to our design work.” True Colours Interiors recently opened a design studio on the first floor of contemporary furniture store, La Source in East Street, Horsham, where people can drop in and discover how their homes can be

transformed to turn their dreams into reality. The Studio has a large selection of fabrics for curtains and blinds as well as a kitchen display and portfolios of previous projects from whole house renovations to a funeral chapel renovation. True Colours Interiors has been operating for 12 years in Horsham, working with both residential and commercial clients.

Whereas if the appeal is lodged on or after the 01 April 2015, this would result in no rebate but occupiers would see an ongoing saving. All occupiers should seek advice from a Chartered Surveyor without delay. Crickmay are happy to carry out a review and if there is scope to appeal, will often work on a no-win no-fee basis. Crickmay Chartered Surveyors Horsham Following the recent Government announcement ‘slipped’ into the Autumn Statement, occupiers of commercial properties will shortly lose the ability to claim the level of rebate that is currently possible where changes to their business rates assessment are justified. Chris Hickey from Crickmay Chartered Surveyorssaid: “The implications are huge for occupiers of commercial property.” Currently any adjustment to a property’s business rates assessment found to be necessary can be

From April 1, 2015, the earliest the Valuation Office Agency will back date any changes to a property’s business rates assessment is April 1, 2015, and as a result, the billing authority will only backdate any business rates rebate to that same date. Hickey said: “The announcement went un-noticed by many, but action needs to be taken now if occupiers are uncertain that their current rating assessment is set at the

Visitors to Jobs-Live were able to work on their CV writing skills, interviewing technique, cover letters and how to successfully e n g a g e with employers by using social media more effectively. Sales Director at Jobs-Live, Mark Luxford said: “It was a really successful and enjoyable day. Everyone gave really positive feedback with many now revising their CV’s and continuing to work very closely with Jobs-Live as their job search gathers momentum”. “People have said the day has made them feel more focused with in some cases a new found direction in terms of what they

Following the world premiere at the Finborough Theatre in London, Operation Crucible will be touring to six venues across England in February and March 2015 and will be heading to the Capitol, Horsham on Sunday, February 8. A story of four ordinary men in extraordinary times. On December 12 1940, more than six hundred people lost their lives in over seven hours of continuous bombing by the Germany’s Luftwaffe. Their objective? Wiping Sheffield’s world famous steel works - the heartland of Britain’s munitions manufacturing - clean off the map. The ruthless attack left Sheffield in ruins – destroying families, shattering a way of life, and changing the city forever. At 11.44pm on the night of the raid, a single 500kg bomb reduced the Marples Hotel, which stood proudly in Fitzalan Square, from seven storeys to just fifteen feet of rubble. Only one of the ten compartments in the hotel’s cellars withstood the blast. Within it, trapped, were four men. This is their story, from beginning to end. Playwright Kieran Knowles makes his professional playwriting debut with Operation Crucible. Director Bryony Shanahan is the co-artistic director of Snuff Box Theatre Com-

pany, she most recently directed the national tour of Chapel Street and the multi-award winning production of Bitch Boxer. The play will be performed by Paul Tinto whose previous productions include Black Watch (National Theatre of Scotland) and Chariots of Fire (Hampstead Theatre and West End), Salvatore D’Aquilla War Horse (West End) and The Way of the World (Chichester Festival Theatre), James Wallwork - Chapel Street (National Tour), Outpost 11, Effie Gray, Holby City and Doctors (BBC) and Kieran Knowles. Following their critically acclaimed and OffWestEnd Award nominated productions of Summer and Smoke, and I Am A Camera presented at Southwark Playhouse and Still Life and Red Peppers at the Old Red Lion Theatre, Folie à deux Productions is delighted to present their first production of new writing, together with new company From Ground Up Theatre Company. Supported by the Stage One Bursary Scheme for New Producers. Showing at the Capitol, Horsham on Sunday, February 8 at 7.45pm. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Box Office on 01403 750220 or by visiting www.thecapitolhorsham.com.

he start of the year is here and for us at Mayhew Estates, 2015 has kicked off with a bang! In the first couple of weeks, January has seen an almost record low of interest rates encouraging both buyers and sellers alike to hit the market running. If there were ever a time to sell- this is it and for potential purchasers, becoming homeowners or moving to that second rung of the ladder is becoming more possible every day. The dip in interest rates is beneficial to first or second time buyers, buy to let investors or those looking at downsizing and they could see a substantial increase in profit and margin. January 2015 is also a very special month for us given that it is our very first birthday in Horsham- and what a year it’s been. In 2014 we achieved an incredible average of 99% of our v endor’s asking prices and boasted more sold signs than any other agent, not bad for a fledgling. This year we intend to step up the momentum even more and continue striving to provide our clients with the best possible customer service, achieve prices beyond expectation and most importantly ensuring a smooth and speedy transaction to that dream home or next step. So pick up the phone and give us a call, or indeed pop in and see us as property is moving extremely quickly. We’d be proud to assist you in both the purchase and sale of your home and rest assuredyou’ll be in good hands. We look forward to hearing from you.

If you want to sell your home in 2015, now is a great time to get your property on the market according to local estate agency Fox & Sons in Horsham. As part of its national network Sequence, Fox & Sons recorded a rise of 54% more new home buyers registering an interest in purchasing a property in the first few weeks of January compared to the end of last year. It seems that as people shake off the cobwebs of Christmas, potential buyers are out in force looking for a new home. Mike Taylor, Branch Manager at Fox & Sons said: “The new year is typically a time when people start making plans for the future, and this can include looking for a new home. “We have seen an influx of people registering their interest in a new home – a figure not being met by the number of properties coming onto the market.” The agent’s national figures show there remains six buyer registrations for each new property coming onto the market and that competition for good properties remains fierce. MIked added: “With mortgage rates remaining at a seven year low and buyers buoyed by the stamp duty savings there has been a flurry of excitement in the local market which we expect to continue. “We predict that demand will increase and we now need more properties in order to meet current buyer interest. We urge those people looking to sell to get in touch.” If you have a property to sell and would like to arrange a free market appraisal on your home, contact the local Fox & Sons branch on 01403 217417 or email: horsham@sequencehome.co.uk.

Q A

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY OF ENSURING A SMOOTH AND SPEEDY MOVE?

Communication is the key! Good communication is at the heart of ensuring a transaction goes smoothly. If at the outset you have informed the buyers/sellers, agents and conveyancers of your goal then the timeframe required is clear to all parties. Your conveyancer should inform you at every mile stone of where you are and whether any foreseeable delays are expected. Freehold transactions are predominantly quicker than leasehold due to the fact you are required in a leasehold transactions to deal with a third party (landlord/management company) which can sometimes delay matters. A good conveyancer will use all the tools available to them, for example if you are paying an estate agent to sell your

property, then use the agent to chase parties such as the solicitors or the buyers/sellers as they are the only party that can communicate with everyone in the transaction. Communicate with your buyers/ sellers, always keeping them in the loop will only ever assist in a transaction and finally tell your Conveyancer everything they need to know as early as possible, if you have done works on your property then get all the necessary paperwork together at the outset this will only reduce the number of enquiries that the buyers solicitors may ask and return and sign all paperwork as quickly as possible. Planning, preparation and communication, if you have all these your transaction should go as smoothly as it can.

Hawks just short of a century New Captain Ann High scoring Hawks U12 team

Horsham Hawks 99 – 24 Crawley Crusaders Youth Basketball Dave Smith – Sports Editor

T

he Horsham Hawks made it three wins out of three to start the New Year with an emphatic 99-24 victory in Crawley. Horsham exploded out of the gates taking a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter which was extended to 24-6 by the end of the period. Strong rebounding, excellent passing and quick accurate finishing continued into the second quarter with the Hawks taking

a dominant 50 -12 advantage at the half. The pace slowed after the break with Horsham narrowly out scoring a resilient Crawley team in the third quarter 10-8 before a Hawks time out refocused the visitors who found their team rhythm again to score 8 straight points in the final 2 minutes of the period. The final quarter saw Horsham retain their unbeaten start to the New Year in dominant style outscoring the opponents 31-2 in just 10 minutes. The Hawks victory was punctuated by a three point basket from Antonio Lozzi as the game drew to a close which sees Horsham rise to second in the Sussex League Table behind Worthing D&D who

squeezed past the Brighton Cougars in overtime to remain top. Head Coach David Clayton said, “The ball movement and quality of passing was exceptional today, although I was particularly proud of the way three of our newer players stepped up to the mark shooting with complete confidence and without hesitation to contribute a combined 20 points to the team.” Next up for the Hawks is an away fixture against the Henfield Heat. Scorers: Josh Tavolieir – 20, Finley Bennett – 18, Josh Lea-Clayton – 13, Antonio Lozzi – 9, Charlotte Willcox – 9, Harry Rose – 8, Jamie Coulson – 8, Anaya Wakefield – 8, Meghan Stevens – 4, Miguel Venturini – 2. James Lowe.

Sparrows hold FA coaching course Junior Football Dave Smith – Sports Editor To be a FA Community Charter Club one of the criteria that needs to be met is to have a qualified coach for every team within the club. Horsham Sparrows FC is currently the only FA Community Charter Club in Horsham; but others are working towards achieving the status. Recently Horsham Sparrows achieved another first when they were the first local club to hold an in-house Level 1 coaching course. The course was run by FA coach Roger Crouch and enabled 16 candidates made up of a cross section of players, coaches and volunteers to attend over 2 weekends at Southwater Leisure Centre. Topics included drills and warm up techniques, child safety and emergency aid and the course is designed to provide the candidates with all the skills needed to run a football team. The club were able to hold the course due to the generous help of sponsors and sporting bodies. Keysource, a local IT company that have previously supported the club, funded 5 candidates as did Active Sussex, a local initiative that promotes girls and women to get into

Horsham Sparrows Level 1 Course

Golf Dave Smith – Sports editor January sees the customary change of captains at Slinfold Golf and Country Club, and to welcome the incoming Lady Captain, local business owner Ann Grain, 40 ladies turned out for the New Year Drive In. The fun competition, played over 9 holes, tested the competitors’ skills by limiting them to just three clubs and a putter. For a £1 donation to the Lady Captain’s nominated charity, an extra club was allowed. Over the years, raising money for charity has become an important part of the Lady Captain’s role. Ann Grain, founder and director of Jag Press & Publicity, a PR consultancy in Horsham, has chosen her pro bono client, Brighton-based The Virtual Doctors, as her charity.

Talking about the charity, Ann said: “It’s such a smart concept. Using mobile broadband networks, The Virtual Doctors connects African clinic staff in rural areas with doctors and specialists all over the world to assist with the diagnosis and treatment of patients. “On top of that, the medical personnel donate their time for free to offer help to some of the world’s poorest communities. It’s both ingenious and heartwarming and I am pleased to have the chance to boost the support for the charity’s good work.” £46 was raised from the £1 donations and, with nearly 40 charity competitions and other events still to come in 2015, Ann is hopeful that Slinfold Ladies will give generously to support The Virtual Doctors in their efforts to save lives in Africa.

sports coaching. Sparrows Club Secretary Simon King said “We are entirely volunteer-run and non-profit making so we rely heavily on goodwill and sponsorship to pursue initiatives of this sort that benefit the club and the local community”. The course was also backed by Sussex County FA who have already helped the Horsham Sparrows by

providing a coaching Mentor who works closely with managers and coaches at the club. Simon King added “The real credit must go to the candidates themselves. As with all other local clubs, having volunteers who are prepared to give up their time for free are a valued asset and the commitment they show ensures football can be provided for anyone who wants to play.”

MMJ1 provided a shock result in the latest week of the Horsham Central League by beating East Grinstead 6-3 in Division 1. Harry Collins held firm for East Grinstead with a maximum but other than that the young MMJ trio set about his teammates in fine style. Scott Covey and Fred Goodall both took five sets to account for Brian Biggs and despatched Alister Smith with surprising ease. Joe Worskett beat Smith in five and Biggs in four. East Grinstead will need to whitewash Horsham A next week to prevent them winning the second phase. MMJ2 scored their first win, a convincing 7-2 over bottom team Horsham D. Tom Danahay

was imperious with a maximum but he did take five sets against the D’s top man Andy Sinclair who won their two. In Division 2 Storrington won a good match against MMJ4, 5-4. Keith Anderson, as ever, was his team’s mainstay with three wins but one each from his young colleagues saw them over the line. Another good two wins for Jacob Evans. In the other middle tier game Horsham B whacked MMJ3 9-0 to put themselves neck and neck with their C team going into next week’s deciding round of this phase. In the third tier the all girl MMJ5 team dominated a makeshift Holbrook team to win 9-0 whilst MMJ6, courtesy of maximums from Harry Yip and Chris Goodier, gave Warnham a hard time 7-2.

Silver medallist Lucy Wood at Farlington Palmer steps up to F1 with Lotus Jolyon Palmer in action at Monza last season

Harriet Fryer in goal for Farlington

Lucy Wood helped Farlington’s hockey players Hockey Dave Smith – Sports Editor Commonwealth medallist Lucy Wood visited Farlington School on Friday January 16 and gave a hockey masterclass for girls in Years 7 to 9 on the floodlit astro pitches. Lucy, a local girl, started her club hockey career at Horsham Hockey Club where a number of Farlington girls play in the junior sides before working their way into the senior sides. Lucy was 20-years-old when she was selected to play for England at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow last year. She did not have an easy ride to reach the squad; a ruptured anterior ligament forced her off the pitch in November 2012. After recovering from that injury,

she broke her hand during her first match, setting her back once again. But Lucy has a determination and inner strength rarely seen in someone so young. “There were some very, very low points,” she recalled. “I remember the day I had my surgery. I was in so much pain and crying my eyes out, but I just knew I could get through this if I worked really hard. My surgeon advised me that I was going to be out for a year, so it was an excellent chance to become the fittest I’ve ever been.” Months of intense gym training and discipline followed. Although she could not get on the pitch and play, Lucy made sure that whatever exercise she could do, she did. A frustrating period in her life was turned around by her optimistic approach.

Sara Whittaker, Director of PE and Games, said ‘It was great to have such an inspirational role model in school leading a session. Lucy was excellent with the girls and re-enforced what they had been previously told. The girls were very receptive to Lucy’s coaching and inspirational story, and worked very hard throughout the session to impress her.” In addition Farlington’s Harriet Fryer has been selected to play for the Under-16 Sussex Hockey Squad after extensive trials last term. Harriet, who is in Year 11, took up hockey goalkeeping at Farlington and has played hockey for Horsham. She is also a talented cricketer, who won awards last summer at Cranleigh Cricket Club and the Andrew Flintoff Cricket Academy. Sara Whittaker, Director of PE and Games at Farlington, says, “Harriet is a talented goalkeeper and is a real asset to the Farlington hockey squad. She has worked really hard to gain her place in the Sussex team and I do hope she can go further and fulfil her potential.”

Motor Sport Dave Smith – Sports Editor Southwater’s Jolyon Palmer received the perfect birthday present this week, a job with the Lotus Formula 1 team. The announcement was made on Tuesday, his 24th birthday. Palmer, who won the GP2 Championship last season, has been made the teams reserve driver behind former GP2 Champions Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado and will attend all F1 meetings taking part in free practice sessions and giving significant input and assistance to the teams development of their car. Palmer has been seeking a move up to Formula 1 since his Championship win last season and the appointment comes after he spent time late last year working with the Sahara Force India F1 team. Jolyon said: “I’m delighted to be moving into F1 with Lotus F1 Team

this year as Third Driver and I’m very grateful for the opportunity they have given me. My goal has been to become a race driver in a competitive F1 team for 2016 and Lotus F1 Team is a great opportunity for me, particularly with Mercedes engines now. To be able to learn with a major F1 team by working closely with them in every area and getting a lot of mileage in the car is the best way possible, as Valtteri Bottas proved. I am delighted to be joining Lotus F1 Team at such an exciting time and my objective is to earn a long-term future with them.” Gerard Lopez, Chairman and Team Principal, Lotus F1 Team, said “For Jolyon to have enjoyed such a successful season as he took his title last year shows his superb potential for the future. We are looking forward to seeing him in team colours and behind the wheel of our 2015 car, the E23 Hybrid, which represents an exciting new era for Lotus F1 Team.”

Disappointing defeat leaves Hornets adrift Tom Vickers had a good debut

Dave Smith – Sports Editor

Saturday 17th January 17 - Ryman League Division One South Horsham 0 - 2 Herne Bay After the optimism from the three points gained at Carshalton last week this home defeat against a Herne Bay team that sit in the ‘safety’ of mid table has highlighted the enormity of the task facing the management and players if they are to secure their Ryman League status. Undoubtedly it was always going to take a few matches for the influx of the much needed players intro-

duced by stand in manager Anthony Storey to gel; the only worry is that with the Hornets eleven points adrift of safety, time is not on their side. Herne Bay had lost their last five matches before visiting Gorings Mead last Saturday but as so often this season errors at the back resulted in goals for the opposition and without a goal now from open play since Harry Smith scored on December 23, things are again looking bleak. On a plus point the team has played much better in the last three games and will need to continue to do so for the remainder of the season while eliminating the errors and adding some goals. The two latest signings, Trevor McCreadie and Tom Vickers, both started. Vickers replaced the departed Ross Morley and McCreadie

played up front in place of Bailo Camara who had work commitments. The Hornets started quite brightly, McCreadie and Tony Nwachukwu both looking lively and both having opportunities to score. However the good start came apart on 16 minutes when Tom Gilbert allowed himself to be easily disposed by Brown who picked out Danny Williams who made no mistake in firing past his namesake in the Horsham goal. The goal knocked Horsham out of their stride and they then struggled to put any passing moves together in what became a scrappy affair littered with free kicks. Just before the break Williams wasted a good chance to score his and his team’s second when he lobbed over the bar from close range. With just a few minutes of the

second half gone some worse finishing from Herne Bay kept Horsham in the game, this time the visitors Steven Ita inexplicably fired wide when presented with an open goal. At the other end McCreadie missed the Hornets best opportunity of the game after failing to get his header goal bound from an Nwachukwu cross. With all the well worked chances that went begging the visitor’s second came from a poor effort on goal being allowed to hit the net by Williams in the Horsham goal. Defender Michael Turner ‘half hit’ a shot from distance and the normally dependable Gareth Williams allowed the ball to slip through his hands and into the net. Storey sent on new signing Saul Otobo for his debut in replacement for Gilbert and Richie Welch

replaced Lockyer, both in an attempt to resurrect something from the match but the referee’s whistle brought to an end this disappointing match without the Hornets troubling the visitors keeper Jack Delo. In an important week for the club on and off the field, Tuesday being the Council hearing for the Hop Oast new ground application and Wednesday seeing the visit of East Grinstead Town, a team also involved in the relegation battle, this was a disappointing start. Goal Scorers: Herne Bay: Williams (16) Turner (54) Horsham Team: Williams, Akande, Hamilton (Berry 90) Gilbert (Otobo 55) Page, Sherriff, Branford, Vickers, McCreadie, Nwachukwu, Lockyer (Welch 68) Unused Subs: Storey, Smith.

Tanbridge footballers selected for England squad Lions thrash East Grinstead Junior Football Dave Smith – Sports Editor Natalie Taylor and Bronwen Thomas, two students from Tanbridge House School, have played football both nationally and internationally this season through their involvement in the Sussex Schools Football Association. Natalie and Bronwen have been selected from hundreds of girls across England to represent their country at international level. Bronwen has a place on the English Schools Football Association Under 15 squad and Natalie has been selected for the England Under 17 squad, as she was born in 1999 rather than 2000 is therefore ineligible for the younger Sussex Schools squad.

Natalie Taylor & Bronwen Thomas are in the England squad After initially being selected from a trial in September, Bronwen has played both league and cup games for Sussex against other county teams from across the country. She

now has some exciting times to look forward to including; a training camp in Portugal in February, a fixture in Dublin in March followed by an International tournament in Glasgow in April. Bronwen said “I am really excited to have been given this fantastic opportunity. I am especially excited to play in international fixtures and to earn an international cap!” Ross Maryan, Chairman of the Sussex Schools Football Association, said “The girls have shown how school football can open doors to international football. Sussex Schools FA are very proud of the girls and wish them all the luck in the future. We hope the girls will be role models for more young footballers in Sussex in the future.”

Saturday January 17 – Sussex Intermediate League Horsham 2nd XV 40 – 0 East Grinstead 3rd XV Rugby Dave Smith – Sports Editor Due to league rules stating the maximum score registered should be 40 points the stats will show 40 – 0 however the Lions actually racked up 61 points without reply in this one sided dominant display. Tries from Kyle Fuller x 2, Declan Nwachukwu x 2, Jordan Smith x2, Carl Harman, James Layzell and Dan Bourne, of which Josh Chalk converted 6 of them as well as kicking a penalty goal, ensured this emphatic

victory. Lions team manager Andy Layzell was overjoyed with his team’s performance, “The boys were fantastic! We set out a clear game plan of using the pace and the good handling that our team has. I was impressed with our defence with us shutting out East Grinstead. To be fair to East Grinstead they didn’t make life easy for us, we had to work hard to earn the scores we got. This performance was our most complete performance of the season. There was number of players who put in a season’s performance but my joint man of the match is Jordan Smith and Kyle Fairs who both showed their power in attack and in defence, whilst also showing good ball handling when needed.”

They came back into the game with their breakaway try when we had our whole team committed to attack but we failed in our execution and looked exposed. I thought the better team won, we had the better of territory and possession but at times we didn’t look after the ball well enough, especially when we kicked the ball down their throats when we should have kept hold of it in the second half. Credit to Dartfordians though, they are a good side and kept coming at us. They played catch up rugby of the highest order effectively and we lost our control at the end of the first half. The front row had good games against physically bigger opponents and the foundation of the win was built on an outstanding performance by the pack, especially our back row of Richard Tredgett, Michael Tredgett and Arun Thompson who are of National League calibre, whom we have rarely been able to field in the same team this season. My man of the match is Arun Thompson for his defensive work, his link play and his work in the line-out.” Following Pulborough conceding the Bob Rogers Sussex Cup fixture on January 24 Horsham are through to the semi-final against Heathfield & Waldron on February 14.
