The prospect of 1,000 new jobs coming to Horsham has moved

The Novartis site was identified as a higher education facility with other related employment uses. But that plan was wrecked when Brighton University decided not to proceed with its ambitious scheme. The success of the new scheme
will depend on money made from housing on part of the site, details of which would have to be approved by planning councillors next year. Louise Goldsmith, Leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “This is a huge boost for the
West Sussex economy which we hope will create many new jobs. “We have major ambitions to attract businesses from the health and life science sector as we know this is a growing industry with huge potential. Continued on pg 3

Mr Quin calls
The men and women who get the post through in all weathers have been thanked for their efforts. Horsham MP Jeremy Quin called at Horsham and Billingshurst delivery offices to thank staff for their hard work during Royal Mail’s busiest period. This year Royal Mail has been celebrating its 500th anniversary. Mr Quin saw first-hand the operation of delivering Christmas post and passed on season’s greetings to its hardworking staff. He was shown around the offices by Delivery Office managers Glenn Johnson and Steve Pawley and was introduced to the postmen and women, who are pulling out all the stops to sort and deliver mail in the Horsham area over the Christmas period. The Festive Season is Royal Mail’s busiest period, as millions of people shop online for gifts and send Christmas cards and parcels. As Royal Mail’s 500th anniversary draws to a close, this Christmas provides an opportunity to reflect on the centuries of hard work delivering to every single address in the UK. Mr Quin said: “It was great to meet the hard working post men and women in both the Horsham and Billingshurst sorting offices. “We would all like to thank them

1,000 new Horsham jobs step nearer Continued from front page “We are also interested in attracting leading companies and new businesses to West Sussex to create new jobs and opportunities.” Subject to planning approval, the Wimblehurst Road site will be transformed into quality employment and residential space – helping West Sussex cover the cost of its investment and securing a good deal for the taxpayer. The County Council announced in January 2016 that it intended to buy the site. Since then detailed work has been carried out including site evaluations, the demolition of several buildings and work to ensure the purchase offered good value for money overall. Louise added: “It was important for us to ensure that thorough checks had been made before we committed to the completion of this purchase. We are confident this will bring about huge benefits to the county, but at the same time we needed to ensure we were investing wisely and that our plans could be realised.” The County Council says it will work with commercial advisors to develop the right mix of business, office accommodation and start up space to transform the site. Ray Dawe, Leader of Horsham District Council said: “It is very good news that West Sussex County Council has completed the purchase of the Novartis site. “We need to create employment opportunities and stimulate economic growth and it is excellent to see that as the key part of the plan. In particular this project should provide a boost for small and innovative start-up businesses. “There will be a number of planning and contractual procedures that West Sussex County Council will need to follow to develop the site, and we will work closely with them to support their ideas.” Any businesses interested in this redevelopment opportunity can find out more at www.investwestsussex.co.uk/novartissite

Captivating nativity from pupils Relatives and friends gathered in Farlington School New Courtyard Hall to watch what the school described as a heartwarming performance of the Nativity. The youngest children of the Horsham school from Nursery through to Prep 2 performed as Mary, Joseph, stable animals, kings, shepherds, inn keepers and angels. The school said after the show: “They sang, spoke their lines clearly, followed stage directions and brought the true spirit of Christmas to the whole audience. A splendid performance!” Featured are scenes from the nativity.
open EVERYDAY 10AM - 9PM Santas Grotto was amazing both myself and my 8 year old son loved it!!! Definitely worth the money, what an experience!!! The best Father Christmas we have ever seen and the little ride in the old cable car to get to the Big Man was just magical.
We had a lovely time today, thank you. The Santas Grotto is very well done with great attention to detail. This was the first visit to meet Santa for my 21 month old, our Elf was very helpful entertaining her while we waited. We enjoyed taking the complementary bus from the school, with ice skating and a good mix of stalls and fairground rides it made for a great afternoon. Will definitely come back next year.
Had a lovely day yesterday here, nest santa experience we have been to! The elfs were great, but santa was fantastic well worth the money !! Great toys too.

Students back anti-homophobia campaign
Backing the campaign
Teams at Collyer’s in Horsham have been actively supporting a campaign to kick homophobia out of sport. They joined in the national “Rainbow Laces” Stonewall campaign. As part of this, a number of national sporting personalities, including players from Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool football clubs have been wearing rainbow laces to show their support. Collyer’s students and staff were keen to get involved in the campaign to
help rid sport of LGBT discrimination. Head of Collyer’s Sport Academy, John Burroughs said: “The rainbow laces show of unity against homophobia is an important message and it is fantastic that Collyer’s can join forces with many top athletes and coaches in the game in actively trying to kick homophobia out of sport.”The Rainbow Laces campaign was launched by LGBT equality charity Stonewall in 2013.
Collyer’s teams wore rainbow laces as part of a campaign to help show that the sport in the UK supports lesbian, gay and bisexual players and fans. Leading the way in the Collyer’s campaign was the college’s team of the year for 2016, the Women’s Netball side and during this week’s home and away fixtures, the captains and teachers of Collyer’s sports teams replaced their usual laces with rainbow ones, in support of the campaign. Collyer’s Principal Sally Bromley said: “This is an important campaign and I’m delighted that our athletes and coaches have been so keen to show their support by wearing rainbow laces. The Collyer’s LGBT ‘id’ group have been hugely encouraged by the Stonewall charity and so it is fitting that we join forces with other schools and colleges from across the country to support them.” Captain of the women’s football team, Georgina Baker, wore rainbow laces in Collyer’s home match against their Brighton rivals BHASVIC. Georgina said: “I think the message is really positive, and it is helping people to feel more accepted and more comfortable in their own skin.” Story: Collyer’s student reporter Molly Towers Mode

A Christmas Quiz raises funds for tennis club Billingshurst Tennis Club held a very jolly and successful quiz night at their clubhouse on Saturday 3 December to help raise money for floodlights for their fourth court. The festive event was well attended by both long-term and new members and their guests who were in teams of four. Their knowledge was greatly tested on wideranging topics such as movies, flags, history, and of course, great tennis players past and present. Longstanding member of the growing club, Mike Tuckwell, was quizmaster on the night which was very well organised and hosted by Club President, Di Burroughs, who laid on a fish & chip supper from Fullers in Billingshurst, followed by her homemade chocolate brownies and mince pies. Raffle prizes were donated by Sainsburys, Tesco and
club members. “We’re an active, social tennis club so this was a great opportunity to relax with friends just before Christmas,” said Di, “although some of those questions were a bit challenging for some of us! “We try to organise a variety of social, fundraising and pure tennis events throughout the year so there’s something for everyone. We’re always keen to hear from new members of any age and they’re always welcome to get in touch or come down to the club on our regular members’ nights every Wednesday and Friday. “We already have floodlights on three of our four courts but with the good news that tennis is increasingly popular, to be able to use the fourth court in the evenings with its own floodlights will be a real bonus.”

Christmas wine notes For wine lovers a bottle as a Chrsitmas present is always welcome, however extensive their “cellar” might be. 40 years or so ago the choice was pretty limited, but it is huge. It is fair to say there is a wine for every taste. A wine gift need not be expensive, even people who like expensive wines occasionally appreciate “everyday” wines. Anyway good company and food can make a modest wine go a long way. As a stocking filler of modest cost for red wine lovers a Cotes du Rhone Village won’t break the bank and will mop up the Christmas Day turkey and trimmings left-overs nicely. Aldi have a decent one at only £3.00. Rioja is usually a safe bet for a present and not too tannic. If you want tried and trusted
consistency stick to known names such as Villa Maria, Errazuritz, and Penfolds. And if you love your relatives or friends enough to splash on champagne something like Taittinger Rose Brut adds beautiful colour to the occasion as well as superb taste. But don’t ignore supermarket own brands in the cheaper champagne range, they are often superb, especially those at Waitrose and Sainsburys. For more of a bubbly surprise buy a bottle of Sussex sparking wine, which is in some cases champagne in all but name, for example the superb Ridgeview and Nyetimber sparklies. Dry Reisling is a very refreshing drink and although I personally like those from Alsace, there are good ones from Germany and Claire Valley in Australia.
For those who don’t like dry whites try medium sweet-off dry Reisling Auslese and for best quality make sure it has the top quality ranking Qualitatswein mit Pradikat on the label. Sainsbury’s has a good selction of German wines. For really sweet palates the “pudding” wines such as Sauternes, Barsac, Tokaji are a treat on their own or with desserts, and the rich, luscious Pedro Ximenez is great with ice cream. For a lighter sweet wine try a Muscat. My ideal Christmas present wine? A Chassagne-Montrachet white Burgundy fits the bill, but it can need up to seven years in bottle before drinking well and doesn’t come cheap. Which explains why I am still waiting for answer to my letter to the man in the red suit after so many years. Happy Christmas.
Celebrate true meaning of Christmas tomorrow Residents are invited to share the true spirit of Christmas on Saturday in Horsham’s town centre. The Carfax area will be full of Christmas entertainment and activities organised by Horsham Churches Together on December 17.The Family Nativity Trail takes place between 11am and 3.15pm, when children and families will be able to meet characters from the Christmas story at the Carfax Amphitheatre, the Bishopric, The Forum and Market Square. There will be a Christmas concert followed by a Children’s Musical Nativity at 2.30pm. Children and families will see characters from the Christmas story and join in with the singing in a show directed by Mark and Lou Bradbury of Little Notes. Geography in the news
When girls were challenged to a newspaper analysis on the subject of geography they found plenty of scope. As one of Farlington School’s projects they working in pairs to relate every article in their newspaper to an aspect of geography. The school said by the end of the lesson the year seven girls were convinced that “Geography is indeed absolutely everywhere.” Three pupils attended Steve Backshall’s Wild World Tour at Dorking Halls, and afterwards they all met Steve in person to discuss their favourite part of the show. One pupil described the show as ‘a unique insight into his adventures in some pretty hazardous locations’. For Lizzie Elliott there was a Geographical Skills A level Investigation at Box Hill, concentrat-
ing on the effects of tourism on species diversity and sward height on the chalk grassland south of Salomans Memorial Viewpoint, which is one of the most stunning locations in the Surrey Hills. Box Hill was also the venue for a year eight and year nine enrichment fieldwork visit, working with Catherine McCasker, the Education Officer at Box Hill. Catherine guided the girls through the completion of a geographical investigation which considered the delicate balance of conservation and ‘access to all’ which encourages tourists to visit fragile environments. The school said that the geography department would be organising more enrichment fieldwork visits and lunch time workshops for girls in every year.

shopping attractions in Christmas video “Horsham, Christmas Solved” is the title of a new video produced by Horsham based Silvertip Films for Horsham District Council. Released online the video introduces the Symes family, finding that Horsham has the answers to all their Christmas needs. The council says that reaction so far has been good with the video receiving thousands of views on the Horsham Time Well Spent facebook, twitter and YouTube channels. So many people look forward to and talk about the big store Christmas adverts, the council and Silvertip films set out to give Horsham its own advert to be proud of. Building on what was effectively a pilot video last Christmas, the production team created a new script and put together an engaging cast of actors and willing local businesses to raise awareness of the Horsham shopping experience. The council says that the end result is a promotional tool that informs while being softly entertaining, a technique pioneered by the council in its previously successful Piazza Italia videos. The Symes family will now feature in a series of videos that Horsham District Council are planning with Silvertip Films in 2017 as part of its ‘Think Horsham’ Economic Development Strategy for the town and district. Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for the Local Economy Gordon Lindsay thinks the video is good for business in a number of ways: “As well as showing that people can get the products and services they want
locally, it shows that towns like ours will continue to thrive when their businesses combine the advantages of online and High Street presence together with traditional retailing skills like merchandising flair and excellent customer service. “The businesses that are featured in the promotional video are just a few of those that do this well and I look forward to seeing many more appear in our promotional campaigns.” Karen Thompson, General Manager of Beauty Secrets in East Street said, “I love the idea of the family choosing to shop in Horsham and I am delighted our independent business is featured as somewhere to find the perfect Christmas gift. The message that everyone can enjoy the experience beauty treatments can give is an important one for our type of business and a sector which is very strong in Horsham.” Victoria Clifford owner of Retroesque in Springfield Court, Swan Walk said: “As the latest independent fashion store to open in Horsham, I was keen to appear in the town’s Christmas video. It was fun selecting the right dresses for Imogen Symes to wear and I love the way it has been shot to show the choice that I offer. I can see the video working well for the town and for me especially as I already trade online and actively promote using social media channels.” Geoff Cockwill, owner of Horsham based Silvertip Films said: “Our cast of actors really click on screen and we can see plenty of opportunities ahead to bring out more of the Horsham Experience through them. On Sunday (December 18) a special charity fund raising event is being held at Rookwood Golf Club, the Robin Hood Lane, Warnham course organised by Sussex Golf. The generosity of 64 warm hearted local golfers will be making dreams come true for children in Sussex’s Chestnut Tree Hospice. Co-founder of Sussex Golf, Alex Bethell told the District Post: “Last year we held a golf day in aid of Cancer Research and that proved very popular so on Sunday there will be a similar challenge, this time to help the excellent Chestnut Tree House who provide such wonderful palliative care at a most vulnerable time for families. We’ve been lucky enough to obtain sponsorship and Chestnut Tree House have asked us to use the money raised to buy over 50 presents for the children to make their Christmas a really memorable event!” Sussex Golf is the brainchild of Alex Bethell and Carl Sadecki and aims to connect golfers in Sussex, allowing them to stay in touch with events, course offers, news and much more, a website will be live in early 2017 but you can find them on Facebook right now. Apart from the four ball Stapleford competition there will be a range of other golf challenges on Sunday and the day will be well

Celebrating 25 Years of T.Rextasy Marc Bolan, with his band T.Rex, was one of the most flamboyant and charismatic stars of the original glam rock era. With Bolan’s special ingredient of Rock-a-Boogie songs throughout the 1970s, including ‘Telegram Sam’ and ‘Jeepster’, he was able to obtain what would be yet another Top 20 record, in 1976, that has since become one of the most memorable and everlasting signature tunes, ‘I Love to Boogie’. T.Rextasy have been performing all over the world for 25 years, a career that ironically out-lives Marc’s very own T.Rex. In 2017, the band returns to venues across the UK, to transport audiences back to the ‘70s, for the Marc Bolan 40th commemorative anniversary tour. Accepted as the world’s only official live tribute band dedicated to Marc Bolan & T.Rex, and the only band endorsed and approved by Marc Bolan’s family, estate, original ex-mem-
bers of T.Rex, and Bolan’s catalogue management, T.Rextasy have been described by many as ‘beyond the boundaries of tribute’. The skilled musicianship of Danielz (Vocals & Lead Guitar), Neil Cross (Rhythm Guitars, Backing Vocals), Rob Butterfield (Bass Guitar, Backing Vocals) and John Skelton (Drums) lets the timeless music and legacy of Marc Bolan and T.Rex live on. This full-on concert showcases all the big hits and more, with both electric and acoustic performances, faithfully recreating the energy and performance of Marc Bolan and T.Rex. Bringing audiences to their feet across the globe, the whole family will enjoy the experience of being transported back to the ‘70s to re-live the experience of attending a Marc Bolan live concert. Performance: Friday 20 January at 7.30pm, The Capitol Horsham. Tickets: Available by visiting The Capitol Box Office: www.thecapitolhorsham.com or calling: 01403 750220

Kidenza, a series of classical concerts for kids, is bringing a Christmas spectacular to Christ’s Hospital School Theatre on the 17th December. The concert is set to be the best yet and is sure to get little ones into the festive spirit. Fusing two Christmas classics with magical appeal - Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker and Disney’s Frozen - the show, titled ‘The Frozen Nutcracker’ will prove to be a visual and musical feast. A live ballet performance, fea-
turing two West End performers, accompanied by an orchestra of young world-class musicians, will make this Kidenza concert one not to be missed. Claire Lambert, managing director and founder of Kidenza explained: “Our aim is always to inspire little minds and harness their natural curiosity. Having just finished our hugely successful South East of England tour, with Carnival of the Animals, we will be bringing our unique brand of entertainment to little ones this
Christmas, to leave them aweinspired. Both the Nutcracker and the music from Frozen are guaranteed to spread the magic of Christmas, melt hearts and leave a rosy glow this Christmas.” Performance: 17 December at 2pm. Tickets: £12 (under 2s, free) are available from www.kidenza. co.uk. The show, which lasts approx. 70 minutes, is designed to appeal to babies, toddlers and primary school aged children.

Frankly Sinatra at The Hawth Direct from Las Vegas, the iconic music of Frank Sinatra is brought to life once again ‘His way’. Stephen Triffitt will bring the swing, the swagger and the velvet vocals, of the legendary crooner in concert, to Crawley’s Hawth, next month. Acclaimed worldwide as the master of his craft, he starred as Frank for three seasons at Las Vegas’ legendary Sands Casino; created the role of Ol’ Blue Eyes in the original West End production of The Rat Pack Live from Las Vegas, that toured the USA, Canada and Europe and Sold out the London Palladium (twice) and Royal Festival Hall with his own solo spectacular. Stephen’s resemblance is ”unsettlingly perfect” (The London Evening Standard). From sculpted hair and twinkling blue eyes, all the way down to his shiny black patent leather shoes, Stephen Triffitt truly is Sinatra. He not only walks the walk, he talks the talk - a masterful performance sees those delicious vocals delivered with consummate ease - “excels at Sinatra’s superb sense of natural, almost conversational phrasing” (Orange County Register). PETs POST Sponsored by
Welcome to our monthly ‘Pet Post’, a section dedicated to news, advice and stories from the lives of our loveable friends. This week our sponsored columnist Abbi Moon from the Horsham branch of the RSPCA talks about how to care for your horse. If you have any stories, pictures or tips you would like to feature in this section, please email dpearson@thedistrictpost.co.uk. We hope you enjoy the read.
Have a pet safe Christmas Christmas is great time; there are presents, fantastic food and we get to spend time with family and friends. But, did you know that Christmas can be hazardous and stressful for your pets? Festive food is delicious to us but to our pets many of it is highly toxic and dangerous. Chocolate, mince pies, Christmas pudding, onion gravy and alcohol are all poisonous for our pets and the bones from carcasses are a dangerous choking hazard. Keep your pets safe by making sure food is stored securely out of reach. If you think your pet has eaten anything they shouldn’t have, stay calm and speak to your vet immediately. Be prepared for any accidents by ensuring that you’ve taken out pet insurance.
It can be tempting to shower your pets with tasty treats. But extra weight gain can lead to health problems, so to keep your pet happy and healthy keep treats to a minimum. If you do treat them to something extra, make sure the calories are accounted for in their daily food ration and feed them a little less for dinner. Why not try making some of tasty, healthy dog treats for your canine companion? You can find a delicious recipe for honey and banana dog biscuits on the RSPCA website at www.rspca.org.uk Festive food isn’t the only hazard to consider around Christmas time, some household items can also be dangerous too.
Some plants and flowers including poinsettias, holly, ivy, mistletoe and lilies can be toxic, so avoid these if you have pets. Tinsel and wrapping paper might be tempting for your pet to
Saving pets from pain abroad: Canine therapy team’s crowdfunding India mission
A canine health expert is preparing for her most ambitious project yet – and has launched a crowdfunding appeal with a tail-wagging twist to help her fulfil it. Julia Robertson is the founder of Galen Myotherapy – a unique hands-on muscle remedy used to treat dogs with arthritis and underlying pain – and in 2017 is taking her pioneering practice to a new audience when she travels to India. She and a small team of fellow canine professionals will be teaching the techniques of Galen Myotherapy to a vet and a dog trainer so they can go on to help animals suffering in Indian communities. They will also be offer-
ing workshops to dog owners to help them understand more about their pets’ anatomy. Julia and her team are providing all training and workshops for free and they have now launched an £8,000 Crowdfunder campaign to help them cover travel costs and expenses. Julia, who has a background in veterinary nursing and farming, said: “This is the biggest project we’ve ever undertaken and the team and I are really excited about working with vet Suranjana Ganguly and dog trainer Sindhoor Pangal. “Galen Myotherapy is all about treating dogs that could be suffering in silence or unnecessarily and it is my mission to help as many
of these animals as possible. We will be equipping Suranjana and Sindhoor with skills they can pass on to other professionals, helping to spread the treatment’s reach and raise awareness among dog owners.” Those who pledge towards the project are being offered money off workshops Julia runs from the Galen Therapy Centre in West Sussex. These include an introduction to canine massage, dog first aid and muscle conditioning for working pets. Through the centre and a UK network of myotherapists, Julia and her team successfully treat thousands of dogs every year. She is also in-demand abroad having taken Galen Myotherapy to Europe, America and the Far East. “India is an animal-loving nation – cows are famously revered there – but we know it has reported problems with its large number of stray dogs,” Julia added. “We hope the skills and expertise we will be passing on will help canine professionals and pet owners better understand dogs, and the messages we will be promoting will help show others how we can better look after man’s best friend.” Alongside the training, the Galen team also aims to treat street dogs and undertake a study of their behaviour to further their knowledge of canine characteristics. The team is flying out to India in May. The Crowdfunder campaign runs until February. To pledge visit http://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/galen-myotherapys-india-mission
play with but make sure they don’t eat it! Christmas is often busy and chaotic. Help your pet cope with the chaos by keeping to their food, exercise, bed and toilet routines as normal as possible. Provide your pet somewhere cosy and quiet where they can retreat to and have their own space away from the festive excitement. Leave toys in this private space to help them associate the area with positive experiences. Cats will really appreciate hidey-holes which can be made from cardboard boxes with holes cut in the side and snuggly blankets inside. Tops of wardrobes and under furniture are often favoured
places. When your pet is in their quiet spot, make sure they are left alone and not disturbed by children or other guest. Always allow your pet to meet people at their own pace. Christmas is a busy time and there’s a lot to do and people to see, but never leave your pet alone for any period which might cause them distress. If you’re spending Christmas day with friends or family and your dog is coming with you, take something which smells familiar, like their bed to help them feel secure. Take some of their favourite toys and chews to help keep them entertained. From all the volunteers at RSPCA Sussex North branch, we wish you, and your pets, a safe and peaceful Christmas.

Luxury development of new Sussex homes close to selling out after just six weeks
A luxury development of new homes in a sought-after Sussex village is close to selling out, after launching to the market in October. Clayshaw Place, a collection of two, three and four bedroom homes in Rudgwick, West Sussex, was released for sale at the beginning of October and out of the 15 homes available to buy, 12 had been reserved by purchasers by mid November. Selling agent Roger Coupe said Clayshaw Place is the most successful new home scheme he has worked on in recent years, with more than 40 viewings arranged over the opening weekend alone. Progress has moved so quickly that contracts have already been exchanged on a number of properties and the first residents
were expected to move into their new home by the first week of December. Roger Coupe, who specialises in land and new home sales, puts Clayshaw Place’s popularity down to the quality of specification and thoughtful design of the properties, by locally based developers Thakeham, and without question the desirability of the location. Roger said: “Rudgwick has always been popular address with homebuyers as it is an attractive village to live in with local services including a doctors’ surgery, dentist, hairdresser and chemist. There is also a Cooperative Food Store incorporating a Post Office counter. There are good schools and great travel links for Horsham and Guildford. “Billingshurst-based developer
Thakeham has made an enormous effort to be a responsible neighbour to the adjoining properties and during the course of construction has kept the site and access routes smart and clean. “This considerate approach has followed through in the method of construction of the properties, along with the architecture of the homes blending with the local area and homebuyers can clearly see this in the quality of the build. And I think, in part, that this has only added to the success of the sales at the development.” Construction on the site, located just off Church Street, began in the spring and is expected to be completed by early April 2017. A total of 25 properties are being built, 10 of which are affordable homes including shared owner-
ship and rental. A landscaped area with ponds, trees and a footpath into the village centre are also being created as part of the new development. Buyers from across Sussex and Surrey have been attracted to the site, Roger said, with the majority of enquiries from within a twenty five mile radius including some from the residents of the village itself. “We’ve seen first time buyers using the popular Government’s Help-to-Buy scheme, through to those who are moving across the market or even downsizing,” he added. Homes at Clayshaw Place range from £395,000 - £950,000. Showhome is open from Thursday to Monday 10am to 5pm. For more information call 01403 823495
Gold for Connells at the Estate Agency of the Year Awards Local estate agency Connells in Horsham is delighted to announce it has won an award at the prestigious Estate Agency of the Year Awards, held in association with The Sunday Times and The Times. At a gala ceremony at the Hilton London Metropole Hotel on Friday 2nd December, Connells picked up Gold in the National Estate Agency of the Year category as part of parent company Connells Group. The winners were presented with their award by celebrated film and TV actor and Spandau Ballet bassist Martin Kemp, with renowned journalist, author and newsreader Penny Smith acting as compere. The award judges’ report said that Connells Group is “respected in the industry.... [and] a great all-round company operating to a successful formula but always with one eye on innovation”. The Group’s commitment to its people was also highlighted with the judges commenting that “the board empowers their team.... [offering] a defined career path and rewards to retain the best people - they enjoy unrivalled retention.” Excellence for customers was also congratulated with mystery shopping results deemed “excellent” and the “level of service offered great...aided by the contact centre and software”. The panel was also “impressed with the number of new branches opening on the high street.”
“We are thrilled to have won this award and to be recognised as part of the top national estate agency group in the UK,” says Adam Heraty, Branch Manager at Connells. “This is a fantastic achievement and testimony to both the high quality services we provide and our success at helping customers with their property needs. I am very proud of everyone in the business for their contribution towards this terrific accolade.” Award winners were decided following a rigorous and thorough judging process by a panel of industry experts who assessed initial entry submissions before conducting an extensive review of the entrants, which included telephone interviews and mystery shopping exercises. The whole of the judging process was overseen by The Property Ombudsman, Katrina Sporle, as Chairperson of Judges, alongside David Mackie, President of the NAEA who acted as Arbiter. Now in its thirteenth year as a dedicated competition, these awards have become widely recognised as the most prestigious and difficult to win. This award follows Connells Group’s success at the Lettings Agency of the Year Awards, held in association with The Sunday Times and The Times in June, picking up Gold in the National Lettings Agency of the Year category.

Hawks win fifth straight game U14 Horsham Hawks 86 – 63 Worthing D&D Basketball The U14 Horsham Hawks continued to capitalise on their rich vein of form winning a fifth straight game in a physical encounter against Worthing D&D. It was Worthing who opened the scoring with a deep three from the corner before Oliver Brooker and Josh Tavolieri responded putting the visitors ahead by a single point. Worthing scored again to narrowly regain the advantage before the Hawks went up a gear outscoring
the hosts 17-2 over the next four minutes led by a relentless Josh Lea-Clayton, Harry Rose and Fin Bennett. The first quarter ended with Horsham leading 24-12. In the second quarter Horsham continued to drive to the basket and convert their free throws as the fouls racked up on Worthing. Horsham went to the free throw line thirty times in the game showing great maturity and focus to absorb the contact and make their free throws. Meanwhile Worthing put together a run to finish the half including a converted three point basket as the
Horsham lead was cut to 37-27. Both sides played well in the third quarter period as the Hawks Miguel Venturini and Andre Gordon continued to play solid defence while Josh Mason-Lovat converted a powerful drive from the halfway line to keep Horsham in control of the contest 56-43. Horsham outscored the hosts 30-20 in the fourth quarter as a cohesive Hawks squad displayed fearless and unselfish attacking basketball to close out the game 86-63 with three Hawks, Tavolieri, Bennett and Lea-Clayton scoring 20 or more points each.

Stunning Jordan Bell hat-trick seals confident Horsham win Jordan Bell’s hat-trick helped Horsham to victory
London 2 South East Horsham 29 - 12 Deal & Betteshanger Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham soon had a useful lead only for the east Kent visitors
to draw level by the break, but the second half belonged to the hosts and they ran out comfortable enough winners in the end, securing their sixth in the table position. In the ninth minute Horsham Captain Tom Johnson opened the scoring with an unconverted try
before Jordan Bell got over the line, this time Johnson obliging with the extras. Deal came back strongly and the teams shared the first half points 12-12, but on the resumption 17 year old Bell ran through on the left, side-stepping a tackle to get over, Johnson’s kick giving Horsham a seven point advantage. Six minutes later Jonny Whiting handed off to Bell for him to get over for his memorable hat trick of tries, the conversion falling just short. Then, Whiting almost broke through himself, being halted just short of the line before James Johnson drove over following a five yard scrum. The conversion went begging but Horsham were home and hosed, their clean sheet second half delivering a well-deserved victory. Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker told the District Post: “After our good early lead we let them back in a bit, but I’m very pleased with that performance. On Saturday (tomorrow) we’re at home again for our last game before the Christmas and New Year break – against seventh placed Hove. We beat them 17-24 at their place in September, so we’re looking to do the double.” Hove shaded tenth in the table Heathfield & Waldron 27-28 last week.
Atlantis promoted to the Premier League Atlantis swimmers are in the Premier Division
Swimming Atlantis Swimming Club went into the final gala of the Arena Swimming League with aspirations of reaching the Premier Division. Atlantis needed a win in the final round to secure a place in the Premier Division, the best in the South of England. Swimming in home waters at the Pavilions in the Park Atlantis got off to a slow start but soon notched up the wins, starting with the U13 girls medley team of Ethel Whyman, Millie Weeden, Issy Hayes and Emma Harrison followed by a win from the open girls Freya Fulcher, Zoe Cawsey, Lily Davis and Beth Britton. Comprehensive wins from Amber Ranson 50 back, Becs Barber 100
breast and Freya Fulcher 100 back helped push Atlantis into a narrow lead of just three points. Ethel Whyman, Daryan De Klerk and Beth Britton then took first place each in the 100m backstroke and at the halfway point Atlantis maintained their lead with a score of 106 points. Senior breaststroker Lily Davis dominated the 100m event to bring home maximum points and Amber Ranson and Millie Weeden also gained first places with impressive swims in freestyle events. Beth Britton and Aiden Sparling also left the completion in their wake with wins in the open 100m freestyle. In the relays the 10 and 11 year olds contributed valuable points and the U13 girls team of Jess Glassford, Emma Harrison, Olivia Round Pitman
and Issy Hayes increased the home teams points with another first place. The last two events the senior open girls freestyle team of Lauren Pedel, Jess Glassford, Lily Davis. Zoe Cawsey, Freya Fulcher and Beth Britton took gold, whilst senior men’s team Aiden Sparling, Matt Boyes, Ed Hundleby, Dan Jones, Andrew Kershaw and George Charter narrowly missed out on first place. At the end of competition Atlantis had secured the win with 205 points, 15 ahead of their nearest rivals. Head coach Andy Lobley said, “The start of the season has seen a lot of changes at our club and to win the league was unexpected but well deserved. We have a great back up team, the best coaching team and a pool full of enthusiastic swimmers who have ambition

Pulborough win leaves them a whisker from top spot London 3 South East Pulborough 28 - 15 Park House Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter
After three defeats Boro returned to winning ways with a relatively comfortable win against 9th in the table Park House. Boro led 17 nil after 20 minutes before the Kent side came back at them, forward power producing two tries and a penalty to reduce Boro’s half time advantage to 1715. But, Park House failed to score again, the defence stifling any potential forays, while faster Boro kicked two penalties and scored a try from the right wing following an attack from a scrum on the Park House 22. Boro Head Coach Clayton Saunders telling us: “We welcomed back Will Truscott and
he got two tries. We had a 13 point cushion with five minutes to go but couldn’t get across their line again - another try would have given us a bonus point and put us back on the top of the table - so we remain second on 45 points, level with Thanet Wanderers but shaded by their superior points difference. Frazer Oliphant-Hope was my Man of the Match – he scored a try and kicked two conversions and three penalties. All three of our teams are second, so the club is very buoyant.” Boro travel to fourth in the table Haywards Heath tomorrow (Saturday) for their final fixture of the year. Although Haywards Heath have won eight of their 11 games they could only draw 14-14 with bottom side Aylesford Bulls last week. Boro beat Heath 14-10 at home in the second game of the season.
Defensive errors deny Horsham a point South League – Premier – Division 1 Horsham Men’s 1st XI 3 - 4 Henley Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Looking for a more productive formula Horsham rang the changes and took the lead, an unaccustomed experience in recent games. They had had close games against Henley when they were both in the same lower league, Henley gaining promotion two seasons ago and Horsham last year. Early exchanges suggested that this was a winnable game for Horsham, Henley being one place and one point ahead of them in the table – and Henley were walloped 7-1 by Spencer last week. Horsham had a short corner and good early possession, defending and building up well and in the 17th minute Joey Humphreys supplied Barney Knights Johnson, who slipped, fell and then scrambled up to bang the ball home. But, Henley equalised from a short corner and, just before half time, a saved set piece fell onto a
Freddie Campbell scored twice
stick and they took the lead. They had been coming more into the game but the 1-2 scoreline flattered, although they were given two more shorts before the break. On resumption Freddie Campbell restored parity before Henley scored again, only for Campbell to level the scores at 3-3, which would have been a fair result - until Henley were gifted the decider. Horsham Team Manager Al Campbell told the District Post: “We were the better side and should have won but schoolboy errors led to failed clearances – their fourth goal was the softest imaginable.” Captain Andy Isaacs added: “We needed goals and we got them this week, responding well to get back to 3-3, but we didn’t mark so well.” Horsham remain in penultimate spot and next play on January 7 when they go to Hastings to take on South Saxons in the Sussex Cup. South Saxons play in the same league as Horsham 2s. League action resumes on January 14 when Horsham visit leaders Bromley & Beckenham, to whom they lost 0-1 in the tight fought opening game of the season.

YM fight back for a point at Wick Junior Football Round Up YM were held by lowly Wick
SCFL Premier Division Wick 2 - 2 Horsham YMCA Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor Horsham YMCA were held to a draw by relegation threatened Wick but after being 2-0 down it could have been a lot worse. Injury hit YM had Sam Smith, Dave Brown and Nick Sullivan all available which gave manager Peter Buckland a few more options. However, Buckland has not been able to field a full strength team all season and with 30 games already played the injury toll is reflected in their mid-table league position. In a frantic opening half hour both ‘keepers, Sam Smith for YM and Lewis Boughton for Wick, were called upon a number of
times to prevent their opponents taking the lead. Most of YM’s opportunities fell to Sam Schaaf although Phil Johnson also came close but it was the home side that 3 minutes before the break grabbed the opening goal; Rob Hutchings ran at the YM defence before crossing for Joe Gromett to put the hosts in front. Just 3 minutes into the second half and things got a lot worse for the visitors as Wick doubled their lead. Again it was the lively Gromett who caused the damage, this time turning Andy Chick’s corner kick past Smith for a surprise two goal lead. Only now at 2-0 down did YM start to look the part and their play took on a renewed sense of urgency. Nick Sullivan came on to replace Brad Curtis and with his support to Schaaf, Johnson and Dave
Brown YM now looked a threat in front of goal. It was a combination of these players that hauled YM back into the match as Brown pulled the ball back to Johnson who set up Schaaf who then beat Boughton from the edge of the area. YM were now in the dominance with wave after wave of attacks bearing down on the Wick goal with only the linesman’s flag denying Dan Evans an equaliser. The pressure eventually told however with 6 minutes remaining and a scrappy goal from Guy Harding from close range gave both teams a point a piece. Manager Buckland commented “A great reaction in a match where as a team we were low on confidence so could have folded. On another day we could have won it - we showed great energy especially in the later stages.”
Roffey U18 5 – 2 Chichester Colts U18 An Alex Barker hat-trick ensured that Roffey continued their winning streak and stay top of Division A. Roffey’s other goals came from Aidan Gamble and an unfortunate Colts own-goal that any striker would have been proud of. The score would probably have run into double figures had Roffey’s shooting been more clinical with Stack, Glossop, McGrane, Knowles and Barker all being guilty of wasting good chances. Colts rarely troubled the Roffey defence, but two defensive lapses were punished by Augustus and Rudge to make the score a little more respectable. Billingshurst U13 2 - 3 Chesworth Rovers U13 The battle for top spot in the table took place at Billingshurst as these two local rivals went head to head in the Horsham A league. Billingshurst brought the game to Chesworth and showed why they are such a great team. Billingshurst opened the scoring with some high tempo attacks. Chesworth equalised a minute later through Toby Shepheard. The second half saw speedy Tom Miller burst into the box and snap up a rebound for 1 - 2. Both ‘keepers made good saves, but Billingshurst levelled with ten minutes left and a draw looked likely but Toby Shepheard then hit his second to break Billingshurst hearts and take the 3 points and top spot. Horsham Sparrows U12 – Sparrows played a strong Chesworth team and were beaten 4-1. Horsham Sparrows U13 – Sparrows were 0 – 2 up away to East Grinstead within the first ten minutes thanks to two goals from Liam. In the second half Sparrows continued to play good football and further goals from Louis, Daniel and Ollie meant Sparrows finished as
comfortable winners by 0 – 5. MoM Louis. Horsham Sparrows U16 – After taking the lead against Dorkinians through a great goal from Harry B, Sparrows conceded 3 before the break and despite a second from Paul G and several close efforts, the visitors hung on to take the points Horsham Sparrows U13 Girls – The game started with strong Southdown FC pressure but Sophie, Millie, Georgia and Charlotte remained strong in the Sparrows defence. Approaching half time goals from Freya and Issy gave Sparrows a 2-0 lead. In the second half Sparrows scored again through Issy, Freya completed her hat-trick and league top scorer Lilymae added a sixth with 2 minutes remaining. It has been a fantastic 2016 with Sparrows remaining unbeaten in the league. Horsham Sparrows U14 Girls – The team ran out deserved 3-1 winners against a resilient Lewes Bridge View team. Jess N scored two with Isabelle V netting the third. On a heavy pitch Natasha T & Anna W turned in strong performances. Horsham Sparrows Women’s Team – Against the odds every one of the Sparrows players excelled in a physical game against a much more experienced Pagham team. In a contrast of styles the better football was played by Sparrows as they tried and eventually succeeded in passing round the more direct and robust Pagham. Pagham took an early lead, only for Hannah to equalise. Then Naomi took a terrific through ball from Imy and slotted in a second, before Pagham hit back with 2 late goals in the first half as Horsham tired. The second half was again nip and tuck but goals from Imy then Naomi put Sparrows deservedly 4-3 up and despite pressure in the last 10 minutes sparrows held on for a magnificent win that puts them back to 4th in the table.
Horsham’s Club Day a big success Horsham’s first team at Club Day

Football Horsham Football Club held their Club Day at their home match against Ramsgate bringing together all 100 players who represent The Hornet’s teams, along with supporters, parents, coaches and sponsors. Although the first team game
ended with a disappointing 2-1 defeat, the day proved to be a huge success as the youngsters from the four youth teams enthusiastically cheered on the senior players. A planning application for a new home at The Hop Oast is due to be submitted imminently by the club and it is hoped that Hor-
sham FC will be able to sustain and expand its position within the community upon securing a permanent new ground. With a permanent new home the club would look to expand its youth teams to increase its role in helping develop young footballers from across the district. The day certainly must have
inspired the Horsham Under 11 who the following day secured the Fraser Cup. A tombola at the Club Day raised money for the Youth Section and for Cancer Research UK. Horsham Football Club also thanked it’s sponsors: First XI: Lines & James, Youth Teams: Mancini Legal Solicitors &
Advocates, Pizza Best, The Best Chicken & Kebab, Covers Timber & Builders Merchants, Horsham Tandoori, Domino’s Pizza, J&R Barnett Building & Roofing Specialists, Horsham Motor Services, Riverwood Houses Ltd, Courtney Green Estate Agents and MR Printers.

Horsham YMCA ultimately overrun by Crawley Injuries have reduced YM manager Peter Buckland’s options
Parfix Sussex Senior Challenge Cup – Third Round Horsham YMCA 0 - 3 Crawley Town Football
Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham YMCA started strongly, creating chances with most of the early possession, Crawley Manager Dermot Drummy say-
ing: “You really stretched us in the first half”, but opportunities went begging and as the game wore on Crawley became more and more threatening. Incredibly, this was YM’s 31st game of the season, Manager Peter Buckland lamenting: “Injuries continue to blight us – since day one we have had no less than four of what would be our starting eleven missing – it’s very frustrating.” Not an excuse, just the reality of the situation. Hardly surprising, then, that YM have been struggling in recent weeks – in the last 10 days they have exited the FA Vase, the Royal Ulster Rifles Cup and, with a league match in between, now the Sussex Senior Cup. YM had two early corners and free kicks, Nick Sullivan just failing to connect with a goal mouth cross and Sam Schaaf shooting marginally wide before, against the run of play, Adi Yussuf put Crawley ahead from a 36 minute breakaway. Dave Brown had a strike saved
but then Conor Henderson’s free kick evaded the wall to sail into the bottom right of the goal, giving Crawley a fortuitous two nil advantage at the break. In the second half Brown was in action again but YM could not find the net and were conceding corners – nine throughout the match, the last of which was not cleared, resulting in a Sanchez Watt sealing Crawley’s three nil win, YM tiring as the visitors increasingly demonstrated superior speed and fitness. One or two decisions might have gone in YM’s favour but they were well beaten in the end, Manager Buckland commenting: “Their second goal was the match turner! We gave away cheap corners but all of our 11 worked their socks off and I can’t ask for more than that.” YM return to league action at Gorings Mead tomorrow (Saturday), entertaining 15th in the table Peacehaven & Telescombe, whom they beat 4-3 in August.
Controversial penalty defeats Hornets George Branford beat the Rams defence to score
Horsham’s Lewis Hyde
Photos by John Lines Ryman League Division One South Horsham 1 – 2 Ramsgate Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor With striker Terry Dodd out with a long term injury the need for a prolific frontman will be high on Dom Di Paola’s Christmas list as his team are lacking a killer instinct in front of goal. The return of Tony Nwachukwu was however a big plus and the quick forward went straight into the starting line-up after missing the last 5 games. Another inclusion in the team was that of Joe Shelley who left to join Pagham at the start of the season; if Shelley decides to stay his drive and energy will be a big addition to the team Early pressure from Horsham –
mostly coming from the endeavours of Nwachukwu – were all thwarted by some good defending and saves from visiting ‘keeper Luke Watkins. Against the early run of play it was Ramsgate who should have gone ahead when Tom Chapman missed a good chance to score. Ramsgate overcame the early onslaught and began to take more control of the match forcing Horsham to put in some frantic defending with Alex Duncan heading off the line to prevent Luke Wheatley scoring and to take the match into the break goalless. Ramsgate came out of the blocks the quickest after the restart with Jack Penny testing ‘keeper Josh Pelling and Steve Metcalf blocking George Crimmen’s goal bound effort. Horsham’s threat continued to stem from Nwachukwu and it was from
one of his typical runs that Darren Boswell got in a good effort on goal that Watkins had to parry before the ball was hacked clear. However it was Ramsgate that looked the more purposeful going forward and they were rewarded with the opener after a lovely passing move saw Ollie Gray spray the ball to Penny out wide and his long pin point cross was met by Chapman who headed past Pelling. After Watkins had again saved well from the lively Nwachukwu, Horsham finally got back into the match. Minutes after coming on to replace Scott Kirkwood, George Branford collected a fine pass from Boswell before calmly hitting the ball past Watkins for a 62nd minute equaliser. The match however was to be decided 8 minutes later by a controversial decision from referee Robinson. After a fine run from Alfie Paxman
the Ramsgate midfielder smashed a shot at Jones from a couple of yards that the referee decided was a deliberate hand ball. With boos from the Hornets fans ringing out referee Robinson booked Jones and awarded a penalty that Aaron Millbank smashed past Pelling. Despite their best efforts the Horsham team were unable to grab another equaliser although the unpopular referee again earned himself a barrage of complaint when he waved away a handball appeal in the area that looked far more blatant than the one that he had awarded. Joe Shelley then missed a sitter when with only Watkins to beat he managed to fire his shot straight at the Ramsgate keeper and the Kent side went away with all 3 points. Tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham again have Kentish opposition as they make the long trip to Herne Bay for a league match.
Lancing benefit from Heath’s off day SCFL Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 1 - 2 Lancing Football Andy Crisp - BBHFC Broadbridge Heath put in a below par performance at home to Lancing and despite dominating the opening 20 minutes fell behind to a goal from the visitors in the 26th minute. Following a swift counterattack from Lancing Nana Baah chased down a long through ball from his own half to dribble around Michael Chester and score from a tight angle. Ollie Moore responded for Heath with a shot from 40 yards that skimmed off the wet turf and was saved by Lancing keeper Tyler D’Cruz diving at full length to push the ball wide of the goal. Alex Fair should have made it 2-0 for Lancing minutes before the break when Tom Caplin whipped in a cross from the right but the Lancing No 9 sliding in at the far post failed to connect properly and the ball drifted wide of the post. The second half was spoilt as a spectacle by time-wasting from the Lancing players who set their sights on hanging on to their 1-0 lead and little else; frustrating both the Heath players and supporters. The Bears went close to scoring when a Piers McDermott corner was met by Stuart Chester but his header went just over the crossbar. Then, with 15 minutes remaining, the visitors scored a second with a well worked goal down the left flank that ended with the ball being cut back to Lewis Finney who scored from close range. Heath finally broke their deadlock when Rob Godfrey’s corner was headed home by Stuart Chester with 5 minutes remaining. With Heath now pushing everyone forward in search of goals a Lancing breakaway 5 minutes into time added on ended with Andy Howard being shown a straight red for pulling back a Lancing player on the halfway line, despite another 3 minutes of time added it just wasn’t going to be Heath’s day and the visitors held on to record their fourth league win on the trot. After the game Heath Manager Steve Painter said “No complaints, we didn’t deserve to win today, we didn’t work their keeper enough, he only made one save in the entire match which isn’t good enough.”
