Olympian Bill is a born survivor at 100 phil dennett News Editor

For the country’s oldest living Olympian reaching 100 years of age has been a lot more hazardous than for most people. German gunners tried to end the hazardous life of Bill Lucas many times as he and his crew mates flew highly dangerous bombing raids in World War 2. His skill and courage earned him the Distinquished Flying Cross and a mention in dispatches. But it also ruined his hopes of an Olympic gold medal because he was past his best when he got to compete in his early 30s. There were congratulations when Arundel and South Downs MP Nick Herbert paid a special visit to Bill at Cowfold last Friday to wish him a happy 100th birthday for Monday. Bill and his wife Sheena, who have lived in Cowfold for 38 years, planned a busy week of celebrations for the special event. Bill is a decorated member of the Bomber Command and flew on many missions during World War Two, notably the 1,000 bomber raid on Cologne in 1942. His final missions were with the Pathfinder Force in 162 Squadron where he was promoted to the rank of Squadron Leader and remained until the end of the war. Bill flew a total of 81 missions, confounding the alarmingly low survival statistics for air crew to survive the war.

In 1940 Bill was selected to compete in the Helsinki Olympics representing Great Britain in the 5,000 metre race. He had every chance of earning a gold medal but the war meant that the Games did not go ahead that year or in 1944. Bill finally got his chance to compete in 1948, but by then he was past his peak and unable to clinch a much-wanted Olympic medal. Today Bill is claimed to be Britain’s oldest living Olympian. Bill was an active member of a fundraising committee for the installation and upkeep of the Bomber Command memorial in Green Park. The memorial was unveiled by The Queen in 2012 and is dedicated to the 55,573 airmen of Bomber Command who died during World War Two. Mr Herbert said: “I am sure that many people will join me in wishing Bill Lucas a very happy 100th birthday. He is a remarkable man who gave great service to his country, competed in the Olympics, and has led a full and active life in subsequent decades. “It was a privilege to visit Bill and Sheena, and I hope that they have had a wonderful week of celebrations”. Bill once said: “If there had been no war, I would have thought that I might have got a medal in 1940 and maybe even got the world record that year. If I’d not done it in 1940 then perhaps I’d have done it in 1944. “Hitler denied me that chance, so I went and bombed him instead. I was a very naïve young man when I went in to war in1940 but we learned very quickly.”

Extra time added for incinerator comments The deadline for comments on the Horsham waste incineratorscheme has been extended until the end of this month. West Sussex County Council confirmed the change this week. The old submission date was January 19, but it has soon become clear that the scheme has drawn many comments and opposition. Meanwhile, an objector said Horsham Parents community Facebook group had helped

I am thrilled the Horsham Parents group has played a significant part in raising awareness of the plans increase the number of objections to the scheme. Parent Caron Porritt said: “I found out about the incinerator plans by chance and was surprised when a related post I put on my Facebook page was shared five times. This got me thinking that if I was unaware

of the plans, and my friends too, then much of the Horsham community could also be in the dark. So I shared my post with the Horsham Parents group and the response was overwhelming.” Heather Playfoot, in charge of administration for the Facebook forum, said: “I am thrilled the Horsham Parents group has played a significant part in raising awareness of the plans. While the group’s main focus is community and not politics, if members feel confident to raise issues that can help enlighten the community as well as engage in discussions pertinent to parents, then this group is really making a difference to Horsham.” To lodge comments by January 31 people can log on to www.westsussex. gov.uk/planning/find-aplanning-application/ and enter application reference WSCC/062/16/NH. Closing date to comment on the plans is 31st January 2017. For more details, visit Horsham Parents group: www.facebook.com/ groups/horshamparents and the Action Group: www.ni4h. org.

Have a go at firefighting day

Adults in Horsham district can sample what part-time firefighting is about at a special day. West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service’s ‘Have a Go Day’ on January 29 will give over 18s the opportunity to find out what a future career as a retained, or part time, firefighter can offer. The event will run from 11am2.30pm at Storrington Fire Station on School Hill. The service is recruiting for retained firefighters at Horsham, Storrington, Partridge Green, Henfield and Billingshurst , from people who live or works in those areas. There will be a range of activities available on the day, including wearing breathing apparatus, practising hose runs, attempting a vertigo test and checking fitness levels. Local firefighters will be available to offer more information on the physical and written recruitment tests and provide tours around the fire station. A mini bus will be running to and from Chanctonbury Leisure Centre for anyone that would like to have a go at the shuttle run fitness test, which is a key component of the recruitment process. West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service Officer Richard Davy, who oversees the fire stations in Horsham District, said: “Recruiting retained firefighters is a challenge for many reasons so our ‘Have a Go Day’ is all about reaching men

or women in our communities who may not yet have considered becoming a retained firefighter. The role offers people a fantastic opportunity to give something back to their community, while getting paid to do it.” “The day will be very relaxed, informal and completely commitment-free. None of the activities are compulsory; we would enjoy meeting anyone who would simply like to come and find out more about their local fire service.” “We’re really looking forward to welcoming everyone onto the station on Sunday. So if you’re up for a challenge, why not come along and have a go.” Retained firefighters are members of the community living within four minutes of a fire station. They combine normal day jobs with being “on call” for the fire service, prepared to respond to incidents when needed. They receive regular training to provide them with the ability to deal with fires, road traffic collisions and a wide range of community engagement activities. Retained recruits receive an annual retaining fee and additional payments for any incidents or community safety events that they attend. To book a place, please email richard.davy@westsussex.gov.uk or just come along on the day. We ask that everyone wears trainers and clothing appropriate for taking part in the firefighting activities.

Urge councillors to save football club, says boss Supporters of Horsham Football Club are being urged to save the club from possible extinction by supporting its application for a new ground. Councillors on Horsham District Council will debate the scheme in March at what the club sees as a meeting that will be decisive for its future. Chief Executive Officer of the club John Lines said in a message to potential supporters on the Hop Oast scheme: “Written support will count massively in the thoughts of the council members voting on the project. Your help with just a short note as described below could mean the difference between this great old community Football Club surviving or folding. Please pass this on also to anyone else you think will respond.” Under the banner “YOUR SUPPORT WILL SAVE HORSHAM FC” he added: “Letters of Support are VITAL and need only be a few lines. One in four drivers break drug laws Drivers from Horsham district were among those prosecuted after 208 people were caught in a drink and drugs blitz on motorists. More than one in four of all drivers caught in checks between December 1 and January 1 were affected illegally by drugs. Despite repeated advance publicity about the checks, more than 50 drivers have so far wound up in court. As part of an attempted deterrent police have released for publication the names of drivers punished, including some from Horsham district taken to court for drink-driving. Karen Walsh, 47, an administrative assistant, of Bell Road, Warnham, arrested on December 16 in Albion Way, Horsham and charged with driving with 62mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath was

disqualified for 17 months and ordered to pay a £295 fine, £85 costs and a £30 victim surcharge. John Tysoe, 54, who is unemployed, of North Mead, Henfield arrested on December 17 in Deer Park, Henfield and charged with driving with 107 mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath was disqualified for 26 months and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £85 victim surcharge. Cameron Long, 18, a plumber, of Wealdon Close, Southwater, arrested on December 18 in Westons Hill, Itchingfield and charged with driving with 91mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath was disqualified from driving for 23 months and also ordered to pay a £461 fine, £85 costs and a £46 surcharge. Gareth Penn, 32, a publican, of Windmill Hill, Horsham, arrested on December 19 in Wartling Road, Pevensey and charged with driving with 101mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath was disquali-

fied from driving for 25 months and also ordered to pay a £320 fine, £85 costs and a £32 victim surcharge. Michael Davis, 57, a butcher, of Kings Stone Avenue, Steyning, arrested on December 18 on the A283, Wiston and charged with driving with 71mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath was disqualified from driving for 20 months and also ordered to pay a £450 fine, £85 costs and a £45 victim surcharge. All these drivers pleaded guilty. Superintendent Chris Moon, head of roads policing for Surrey and Sussex, said: “While I am pleased to see that those caught breaking the law are facing the consequences of their actions by way of prosecution, it is still disappointing to see that a small minority of drivers think it is acceptable to drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”

More good work coming after great 2016

Students at Christ’s Hospital school at Horsham are reflecting on a good 2016 for fundraising as they prepare for more efforts in 2017. During last year the school raised more than £12,000 for charities in the UK and overseas. Funds have been raised through pupil initiatives, individual boarding houses, concerts and the Chapel Charities. The School’s Chapel Charities are chosen each year by the pupils and staff. This year £9,000 in total was raised for The Prince’s Trust; Hop, Skip and Jump which provides respite care for children and teenagers with disabilities and Special Educational Needs; the Nalango Secondary School;

Kyemihoko Community Clinic in Uganda and the Thuthukhani Community Co-operative in Zimbabwe. In addition, food collected at the Harvest Festival service was donated to The Salvation Army. 78 pupils who are members of the School’s Combined Cadet Force raised more than £3,000 for the Blind Veterans UK by walking a gruelling course blindfolded from the school in Horsham, across the South Downs to the charity’s base on the coast at Brighton. Funds were also raised collectively by pupils in boarding houses. ‘Maine’ boarding house staged a charity event at Bluecoat Sports for the British Heart Foundation and for Nalango Second-

ary School (former pupil Robert Gauntlett’s Memorial School) in Uganda raising over £1,000. ‘Peele’ boarding house has been connected with Pageant (Projects Aiding Gambian Education and Natural Talent) for almost 20 years. Year 13 pupils Isaac Hayden, Robbie Anand, Sean Thomson, Crispin Leung and Tom Walker have been fundraising all year in readiness for a 10 day charity mission to the Gambia during February 2017. During their trip in February the boys will be working alongside the Pageant charity in the Gambian schools as well as visiting the two children that their boarding house Peele is currently sponsoring.

School patrol body cameras deemed success The use of body cameras to capture dangerous driving against school crossing patrol staff is being extended. West Sussex County Council ran a pilot scheme last year outside Camelsdale Primary School, north of Horsham, with one of its School Crossing Patrol officers, Len Howard, who had complained of verbal abuse. The trial proved so successful that the school will continue to use the camera from now on. Schools have to raise about £200 for the camera, but the county council helps with other arrangements such as training. West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Bob Lanzer, said: “Children and parents feel much safer. “It has slowed the traffic. “It has made it far safer for the area around the school and the abuse towards the School Crossing Patrol has reduced.” The county’s second body camera, at Harlands Primary School in Haywards Heath, was unveiled last week. The cameras help stop ‘drive throughs’ by impatient

or inattentive drivers who ignore patrol staff and sometime resort to abusive behaviour outside the school gates. The cameras are worn across the chest to capture audio and video footage of motorists driving dangerously, or being abusive towards school crossing patrols, as they help children and parents across the road. Mr Lanzer added the county council was now keen for other schools affected by these issues to get in touch. He said: “For the cost of about £200, schools can purchase the camera and the county council can arrange for everything else associated , such as training and signage, to be sorted out.” The camera records every shift a school crossing patrol works. If footage is captured of an offence, it is passed onto Sussex Police to consider as evidence for prosecution. If nothing of note happens, the memory card is wiped. Anyone interested in arranging a camera for a school crossing patrol outside their school can contact Louise Bishop on 033022 26744 or email louise.bishop@westsussex.gov.uk

Dame Vera’s pride at 100th birthday party for favourite charity Dame Vera Lynn has spoken of her pride at her 100th birthday party for her Billingshurst-based charity. The evening at the London Palladium on March 16 will raise money for the Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity. Blake and Hayley Westenra, comedian Alexander Armstrong and renowned dancer and choreographer Robert Robinson are the first few names set to star in a one-night spectacular to celebrate Dame Vera Lynn’s 100th birthday. Dame Vera said: “To have reached my hundredth year is in itself an achievement - with all the many memories that one collects over the years, the different places and the wonderful people one meets and the many, many fans from across the world who have supported me. The show on March 18th will be but a tiny insight into my career from when I started professionally on stage at the age of seven, through the war years right up until the current day. So I want you to sit back and enjoy what for me has been an incredible adventure of song, dance and friendship.” Dame Vera’s son-in-law retired Squadron Leader Tom Jones , one of the show’s producers, added: “We are all incredibly excited to be celebrating Dame Vera’s milestone birthday with this star-studded show at The London Palladium.

She remains so humble about her career, which touched the lives of so many troops and got them through some of their darkest days. “We’re really looking forward to welcoming guests, friends, VIPs and dignitaries to the concert to celebrate - it will be a truly memorable night for all who attend.” District Post News Editor Phil Dennett, who has met Dame Vera professionally and socially several times, said: “The thing that has always struck me about Dame Vera whenever I have met her is how down to earth she has remained despite her enduring fame. She knows her worth, but she has always remained modest about her considerable achievements.” Dame Vera is credited for boosting the nation’s morale during the darkest days of World War II, and has been honoured countless times for her services to entertainment and charity. Her latest accolade came in the Queen’s 2016 birthday honours when she was made a Member of the Order of the Companions of Honour. The Dame Vera Lynn 100th birthday celebration - or 100: A Tribute to Dame Vera Lynn as it is entitled - is being held at the London Palladium on 18th March 2017. Tickets are on sale now priced from £50 and available from http://www.seetickets.com/ show/100-a-tribute-to-damevera-lynn/pal/2/5169.

Residents of Horsham district are being asked for their views on crime. Run by the Safer West Sussex Partnership, a survey is to seek the views of residents on their experience and perceptions of crime together with what is important to them in their local area. People can visit Horsham Library between Monday and Friday of next week to complete a shorter version of the survey or comment on www. westsussex.gov.uk/crimesurvey2017 until March 5. Its aim is to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour, ensuring that West Sussex remains a safe place to live, work and visit. The Partnership carries out an annual review to understand how national and local crime trends may be impacting on residents, and the survey will help inform that piece of work. Other parts of West Sussex will also be covered. County Council Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing, Christine Field, said: “However safe a place is the perception of crime can have a big impact on a community so it’s really important for us to understand residents’ views. This survey will help inform the Partnership’s work in identifying communities and individuals who are vulnerable to crime. This will assist partner agencies to ensure that appropriate support, intervention and resources are provided to those who are most at risk of harm in West Sussex.”

Odd sock stars in exhibition

The odd sock, bane of most washdays, is being celebrated in the new craft exhibition at Horsham Museum and Art Gallery until mid-March. The Museum said “ When you have a sock, hand-crafted from the finest Irish linen that is over 300 years old, it can and does become one of the star exhibits of the new exhibition Stitching Time 1597 - 2017. Along with the superb odd sock, the exhibition on textiles will also feature an Elizabethan night cap - not a drink, but an actual cap - finely embroidered in gold and silver thread, worn to create sweet dreams rather than cold, harsh thoughts. That though is not the only embroi-

dery on display, for visitors will also be able to see a sampler stitched by one of the top businesswomen of Georgian England. Business partner of playwright and novelist Samuel Richardson, Catherine Lintott made her money printing law books, before retiring to her family origins and becoming Lady Fletcher. Whilst the stitching of the poetic letters might appeal to some, the religious work shown in the early 18th century chasuble (part of the costume worn by vicars) might surprise - though, possibly not as much as the amazing Victorian printed textiles that used a technique invented by Horsham born Renaissance man Thomas Honywood. His printed textiles

won him awards in the era of high Victorian inventiveness. There may be intricately-embroidered Chinese clothing with startling rich-coloured thread, a 17th century stumpwork picture showing true domestic bliss, or a Nigerian Hausa gown with its smock-like embroidery round its neck… or bark cloth from pacific islands, embroidered Regency waistcoats, or even highly colourful samples carried by a 1930s traveling salesman. However, the exhibition Stitching Time 1597 – 2017 is not just about historic textiles but is about joining the past and the present in one amazing exhibition, and will also feature the work of contemporary textile artist, Iris Bishop. The wonderful textile creations of Sussex artist Iris Bishop include digital print fabrics and finely woven silks, with intricately stitched, translucent weaves of colour for a contemporary take on textiles. Take for example one of Iris’s latest designs - ‘Floral Fantasy’ - a digital print on silk crepe-de-chine fabric. Gorgeous soft, silky fabric which slips lightly through your fingers, the design is layered with images of flowers, drawings, photographs and motifs from her 3D work. Or ‘Macrame Flow’, with its bright yarns and inspirational recycled materials, including strips of sari silk skilfully knotted and braided into a free form piece that drapes elegantly around the body. Iris will also be stitching time together within her own display as well as with the museum’s, as she showcases the story of some of her techniques in a fascinating display case.” The exhibition has opened and

runs until March 17. Horsham Museum is open 10am – 5pm Monday-Saturday. Admission Free. For more information contact www.horshammuseum.org.uk Some exhibits are pictured.

Matt’s multi-marathon effort

A Sussex cricketing star is swapping his bat for trainers and moving from the pitch to the pavement, as he prepares to take on an epic running challenge in aid of Chestnut Tree House. Matt Green, who played in the Sussex Cricket 2nd team as well as the prestigious MCC Young Cricketers, will tackle four races including the Brighton Marathon - in just eight weeks, to raise as much as possible for the children’s hospice. And the 26-year-old is now urging those keen to set themselves a

new year’s health challenge to join him and the rest of the Chestnut Tree House team running the 26mile Brighton course. The charity, which supports children with life-shortening illnesses from across Sussex and south east Hampshire, still has some spaces left in the race, and is encouraging those with their own place to join its team. Matt, who also batted for Surrey, decided to support the hospice after learning more about its work: “When I was playing for Sussex we had a tour of the hospice and saw the work they do. It hit a few of the lads quite hard, seeing things like the bereavement rooms. “I was fortunate enough to be a young person playing sport and it brought home that it’s not just older people who have these lifelimiting conditions. Ever since then I’ve told myself I was always going to do something for them.” Not content with just running the marathon, however, Patcham resident Matt will also be competing in the Worthing Half Marathon, Brighton Half Marathon and West Worthing 10k. Already a keen runner, he is going for regular 10-mile training sprints and looking forward to starting his multi-marathon fundraiser. Matt, a youth team coach at Sussex Cricket, is encouraging others to join the Brighton Marathon Chestnut Tree House team - by completing the full 26 miles or the

10k race, which runs on the same day. He said: “Entering my first 10k was the best thing I’ve ever done; I would put it on a par with all my cricketing achievements. I’m really passionate about running and pleased I can now do it to support Chestnut Tree House. It’s a great charity and the work they do is amazing.” Now in its sixth year, the marathon on April 9 is one of the biggest events in the Chestnut Tree House calendar and raised £91,000 for the hospice in 2016. Nicky Ifould, Events Fundraiser from Chestnut Tree House, said: “We’re bowled over by Matt’s efforts and wish him all the best in his races. Seeing our work first hand has stayed with him and we’re delighted he has chosen to support us. “It costs us £3.5m a year to provide care, support and advice to youngsters and their families, and with the government funding we do receive making up less than 7% of this, we rely heavily on community support. “If you’re keen to boost your health in 2017, join our team. As well as improving your fitness in one of the nation’s most popular races you’ll be helping us continue our vital work with every penny you raise.” For more information about running for the charity visit www. chestnut-tree-house.org.uk/ brightonmarathon

Let brilliant Prom dresses shine again Bargains for sale

A Horsham school is easing the pain of paying for expensive “Prom” dresses and accessories. After the success of its first “Preloved Prom” sale in March last year, the Parent Teacher Association of Millais School is again offering the opportunity to buy and sell Prom dresses and accessories on February 4 from 12.30 -3pm to meet a growing need for alternatives to full price items. Ruth Dean of the association said: ‘We had an excellent response to our first ever Preloved Prom Sale last year and it was very rewarding to know we had helped a number of the girls find a dress or accessories that suited their personal budget. We are very excited to be holding the sale again and are keen to hear from anyone looking to sell their prom dress.” The association is encouraging previous students and other Hor-

SA

LE

sham residents to bring their own Prom dress and accessories along for the day and allow them to try and sell it on their behalf. Recycling rates rising

Young promised better communications

Horsham recycling rising achievement also demonstrates the value of working closely with our district and borough partners who have introduced a number of imaginative and successful recycling campaigns over the course of the year.” Initiatives have included rewarding residents who recycled correctly with a ‘gold star’ bin sticker across some parts of Adur and Worthing and trialling the use of recycling bags in poor performing areas. In West Sussex the range of recycled goods includes cartons, foil, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles and containers, paper and card, metal cans and aerosols. Residents are asked to make sure all recycling is clean, dry and not in plastic bags. For all the information you need on recycling, visit: www.recycleforwestsussex.org

Young people, parents, carers and professionals will benefit from improved digital technology for better communications after NHS staff won a community contract. The Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust has been awarded a contract to provide the 0-19 Public Health Community Nursing Service for families in West Sussex after a competitive procurement run by West Sussex County Council. The Trust, which is the existing provider of the Healthy Child Programme, currently including healthvisiting, school nursing and family nursing, has been awarded the new five year contract, with an option for an additional two years. The contract will start on April 1. According to the Trust the

proposal will create a more integrated service, bringing together health visiting, school nurses, and early help and prevention services. The service will be extended to cover children and young people up to the age of 19 and working together in partnership with Barnardo’s to provide a new Skills for Life service for people with special educational needs and disabilities aged up to 25 years. There will also be additional investment in digital technologies to improve communication and engagement between young people, parents, carers and professionals. Siobhan Melia, Chief Executive of Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust, said: “I am delighted that we have been awarded this contract and that the council has backed

our vision for the future of this service. We are committed to ensuring that families and young people experience an extensive range of excellent, localised, seamless support and we look forward to working with the council to make this a reality for people in West Sussex. This decision shows the high-regard in which this service is held. It is a testament to the hard work, passion and dedication of our staff.” Christine Field, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Wellbeing, said: “We want our children, young people and their families to be healthy, happy, safe and ready for school and for life. Our vision is to have a joined up service, which all residents can access near to home.” J354651

Residents of West Sussex are slightly increasing recycling rates. The recycling rate has risen from 41.6% in 2014/15 to 42.3% in 2015/16. This is a 2,400 increase in tonnage which equates to a saving of over £200,000 in landfill tax. This year’s recycling rate is also higher than neighbouring counties, such as Hampshire at 39.1% and East Sussex at 41.6%. David Barling, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Residents Services, said: “I want to take this opportunity to express my thanks and congratulations to residents. Recycling as much as we can is very important. “Let’s hope we can all recycle even more of our waste next year. It is just as important to reduce the amount of rubbish going into our black bins. These simple actions make such a big difference to our environment. This

Open day as children’s hospice seeks volunteers

Farmer insists land for 10,000 homes “not available” Mr Worsley

Volunteers in action

The only hospice in Sussex for children is staging an open day in the hope of recruiting more volunteers. Chestnut Tree House, based in Arundel, is the children’s hospice for Sussex and South East Hampshire and provides specialist care for local children with life-shortening conditions. Its open day will be held on January 25 from 10am to 1pm, for anyone interested to come along and find out more. The hospice says that volunteers make a huge difference to the children, young people and their families who use its services, and there are many different roles available. It is particularly looking for care volunteers. Emma Frost, Clinical Nurse Manager at Chestnut Tree House said: “This involves helping the children and

young people have a bath, have breakfast and get ready for school or college in the morning, and assisting with dinner and helping to bath and settle into bed in the evening. This help is invaluable to the nursing staff as it allows us to concentrate on the nursing needs, and it would be great fun supporting the children.” It is also looking for house help and catering volunteers. The house help role supports the catering and housekeeping teams with stocking up supplies, light hoovering and dusting. It may also involve supporting reception, perhaps directing visitors to an event that is taking place. Catering volunteers help the catering team with the prepa-

ration and delivery of meals to children, young people, families and staff at Chestnut Tree House. Each volunteer role is different, but whatever the role, no experience is necessary and full training will be given. For further information, please contact 01903 871808, email volunteers@stbh.org.uk visit www.chestnut-tree- house. org.uk or pop along on the day to theChestnut Tree House, Dover Lane, Arundel, BN18 9PX. Chestnut Tree House provides specialist palliative care services to 300 children and young people aged 0 - 19 with life-shortening conditions in East Sussex, West Sussex and South East Hampshire.

A farmer left a planning inspector in no doubt that developers were ploughing a lonely furrow if they tried to buy his land for a 10,000-home settlement. Robert Worsley from Twineham made national news when he turned down £275m to protect the Sussex countryside as Mayfield Market Towns announced the proposed development. Mayfield has never submitted a formal planning application but Mr Worsley says it has published maps of his land on its website showing hundreds of acres of countryside obliterated by the proposal. Mr Worsley told the inspector, Jonathan Bore, that national policy stated the need to establish that there is a willing landowner before a site can be considered. He then said of Mayfield’s planning advi-

sor, John Rhodes: “With respect to Mr Rhodes and his submission, I know he says they’re not talking about specific sites here, but I think every submission they have made has made it very clear where their site is and where the epicentre of it is. “As the land owner of the land in that area, I can confirm that the land is not available. It doesn’t have willing land owners there, both in terms of my land and the land belonging to all the farmers and landowners around me.” “I can confirm that it (Mayfields) is not supported, it is not deliverable and frankly it’s a non starter from any constraint point of view.” Mayfield says there is demand for homes and if it succeeds in getting the site included in the Mid Sussex Local Plan, discussed at last week’s hearing at Haywards Heath, that will greatly improve its chances of any planning application succeeding. Any scheme would still need approval by Mid Sussex district councillors.

Dual Gym celebrate with special District Post readership offer Business Martin Read Horsham’s independent Dual Strength + Fitness gym has just celebrated a very positive first anniversary, and want to share their success with District Post readers – read on! Proprietor Olly Melcio tells the District Post: “We’ve had a fantastic year - its going like the clappers! And, what is really pleasing is that we’ve got a good balance of members – male and female – and with a wide age range from students to seniors, of all levels of physical ability. They’re all like-minded people, eager to stay fit. We assess what they’re after and give them what they need and want. I love working here because it’s such a friendly place with everyone on a first name basis.” Olly and co-director Matt Young worked locally together for several years as personal trainers for a national gym and were keen to branch out, setting up their own business to provide bespoke conditioning facilities, Matt saying: “We cater for all requirements, from the achievement and maintenance of general fitness through to Olympic standard for the more serious athlete. We’ve also got an injury and sports rehab unit run by Alan Dean in his in-house Smarter Performance clinic.” Equipment at Dual Strength +

Fitness is state of the art, including cardiovascular and rowing machines, cross trainers, treadmills and spin bikes. And, among the functional training items there are kettlebells, medicine balls, dumbbells up to 50kg, slam balls, 4 squat racks and battle ropes. There is a highly-motivated team of qualified, passionate personal trainers on hand using the latest training techniques to develop and monitor bespoke fitness programmes, one to one or for couples. And, there are classes for those simply looking to keep trim in an enthusiastic group. It is also possible to rent space at the gym for private groups to train. Olly continues: “Our younger members love communicating with each other, interacting via social media and we’ve had some great feedback on Facebook (with over 1700 likes). We’ve got plenty of room and upstairs there’s an area where members can chill out with a refreshing drink or coffee after their work outs and we’re absolutely delighted to announce that two members that met here are buying their first house together!” Matt adds: “We are not the only gym in Horsham so we need to be on our mettle – it’s all about staying ahead of the competition! We try hard to build up good relationships with our members and it’s really great when they act as ambassadors

World Première coming to the Capitol this Autumn

The world of David Walliams’ Awful Auntie, the UK’s bestselling children’s paperback of 2016, will open at The Capitol in Horsham on Thursday 21 September and run until Sunday 24 September, prior to an eighteen month UK tour. It follows the Birmingham Stage Company’s record-breaking tour of Walliams’ Gangsta Granny, which recently finished a sell-out fifty-week tour of the UK. This show will begin a new tour from 15 February and returns to The Capitol on 16 March, before it transfers to the West End for a summer season at The Garrick. David Walliams said: “The Birmingham Stage Company’s Gangsta Granny is truly brilliant, so I’m hugely excited that they’re now bringing Awful Auntie to the stage. It promises to be a thrilling show and a total hoot-Wagnar and I can’t wait to see it!” First published in September 2014, by HarperCollins Children’s Books, Awful Auntie went to No.1

in the children’s book chart for seven weeks. The paperback was published last February and sold 212,000 copies, making it the best-selling children’s paperback of 2016. Combined sales of the hardback and paperback have reached 950,000 copies. It has helped to make Walliams one of the country’s best-selling children’s authors, with four of his books charting in the 2016 children’s top ten. They have also been translated into over 50 languages, bringing worldwide sales to 16.7 million. Awful Auntie tells the story of Stella, who (when she set off to visit London with her parents) had no idea her life was in danger. Waking up from a coma three months later, only her Aunt Alberta can tell Stella what has happened. But not everything Aunt Alberta tells her turns out to be true and Stella quickly discovers she’s in for the fight of her life against her very own awful Auntie. David Williams’ amazing tale of

frights, fights and friendship features a very old car, a very large owl and a very small ghost. Walliams began his publishing career at Harper Collins in 2008 with his debut novel The Boy in the Dress. Since then, he has written nine more books and produced five picture books. Three of his works have won National Children’s Book Awards. Awful Auntie will mark the Birmingham Stage Company’s 25th anniversary. Starting life at The Old Rep Theatre in Birmingham, the company’s productions now visit Australia, Hong Kong, Dubai and Singapore. For twelve years they have produced all the Horrible Histories stage shows, which now regularly feature in the West End. Their sixth anniversary at The Garrick this summer will feature More Best of Barmy Britain. Performances: 21-24 September, The Capitol Theatre, Horsham. PETs POST Sponsored by

Welcome to our monthly ‘Pet Post’, a section dedicated to news, advice and stories from the lives of our loveable friends. This week our sponsored columnist Abbi Moon from the Horsham branch of the RSPCA talks about how to care for your horse. If you have any stories, pictures or tips you would like to feature in this section, please email dpearson@thedistrictpost.co.uk. We hope you enjoy the read.

Bob top cat as RSPCA reveals most popular pet names Ben is top dog and Bob is top cat in a list of most popular pet names issued by the Southwaterbased RSPCA. More than 1,200 people were surveyed by the animal welfare charity to discover what pet owners choose to name their dogs and cats. In 2016 Ben or Benjamin was the most popular name for a male dog. Max and Alfie were second and third, respectively while Poppy was the most popular name for a bitch, closely followed by Daisy in second and Maisie in third. It seems owners stick with traditional names. In 2001 a similar survey also saw Ben come in at the top with Max in second while Bonnie was the most popular name for females. Sam and Jack were also in the top 10 for males while Poppy and Rosie were also included. Toby, Ellie and Meg have dropped off the lists this year, however. In 2016, the most popular name for male cats was Bob with Charlie in second spot and Smokey in third. Bella was the most popular name for female felines, while Molly came in second and Jess in third.

Dogs get arthritis too – and now’s the time to look out for it

Winter weather spells aching, painful joints for thousands of arthritis sufferers. But as the country wraps up against the frost and ice, spare a thought for man’s best friend who can also suffer terribly when the temperature plummets. Arthritis is a common condition that affects thousands of dogs of all breeds and ages. And a Sussex canine health expert - who successfully treats scores of arthritic dogs every year – is calling on pet owners to consider whether their four-legged friends could be suffering this winter. Julia Robertson is the founder of Galen Myotherapy, a unique handson manual muscle treatment that helps dogs suffering from arthritis, compensatory issues and underlying pain. She is calling on dog owners to look out for arthritic

symptoms over the winter months, so they can make early inroads to prevent the condition from worsening. Bolney-based Julia, who has a background in veterinary nursing and farming, said: “As man’s best friend dogs only want to please their owners and this ingrained devotion means they will often suffer in silence, not wanting to cause a fuss. “They can also struggle to communicate their pain so they may not start to show the physical effects of arthritis, such as a limp or reluctance to walk, until they are in agony.” Tell-tale signs of arthritis in your dog Uneven walking – are they avoiding putting weight on a particular leg? Stiffness, especially when getting up after they’ve been laying down / sitting for a while. Persistently licking or chewing their feet – to

distract from the pain. Avoidance of grooming, stroking or being touched in a particular area. Lameness or limping. Irritability. Difficulty/reluctance to do a physical activity they never struggled with previously. Change in body shape – neck (collar size) and shoulders becoming larger, hind quarters looking ‘smaller’, and a hunch developing. As with humans, canine arthritis can also be prevalent in young dogs. Osteoarthritis can be brought about by previous damage to a joint so, Julia warns, if your pet suffered an injury or accident as a puppy or teenager, they could be susceptible in years to come. Julia is making her call as she launches a Crowdfunder campaign to support a trip she is taking to India in the spring, where she will be teaching myotherapy to a vet and a dog trainer. India is a new audience for myotherapy and Julia will be providing all her training and expertise - including how to spot signs of arthritis - for free. She added: “Now is the time to start looking for tell-tale signs they could have arthritis as the cold, wet weather will aggravate any problems they may have been able to hide or ignore earlier in the year. Spotting arthritis early and getting a plan in place to manage their pain will help in the long term and stop the condition becoming unbearable. Miller Homes offers new year treat to Horsham house hunters Miller Homes Southern is set to launch an exciting new development near to Horsham in West Sussex, comprising 193 luxury properties. Mulberry Fields launches on 19th January, when homebuyers will be able to choose from a range of two, three, four, and five bedroom premium properties. Located on the outskirts of the charming village of Southwater, the development is close to shops and a country park, while also offering stunning views over the South Downs National Park. Tracey Lee, regional operations director for Miller Homes Southern, commented: “The location of Mulberry Fields is perfect for anyone who yearns for a tranquil village life, yet wants to be close to great amenities. Situated only five miles from the market town of Horsham, 20 miles from the popular seaside resort of Brighton, and just 20 miles from Gatwick Airport, it also offers great transport links to the area and for wider travel. “The development has already received a great deal of attention from people looking for their new home, so we would advise house hunters to register their interest as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.” She added that Miller Homes prides itself in creating thriv-

ing new communities, while also making the moving process straightforward for buyers: “The most satisfying thing for us during the 80 years we have been making houses, has been seeing the people who move into them create their homes and build communities around them. That’s why we provide support and assistance every step of the way throughout the purchasing process, to ensure it is goes as smoothly as possible.” Miller Homes has worked with Wates Developments, who are experts in land, planning and joint ventures, to deliver the homes. Miller Homes has been awarded 5 stars for Customer Satisfaction in the Home Builders Federation (HBF) National New Home Customer Satisfaction Survey. POSITIVE OUTLOOK Knight Frank’s James Nowak shares his views on the 2017 market

It may come as a surprise to some, given the negative press coverage surrounding the property market in recent months, but 2016 was a year of success for Knight Frank in Horsham. The team and I sold more properties in 2016 than in any of the last 3 years. As Horsham is fast becoming one of the most popular market towns in West Sussex we are keen to offer as many possible homes for sale in the town and surrounding villages. Such is our commitment that we are offering free market appraisals of your home in order to provide up-to-date pricing advice. Over the last 5 years property prices on average have increased by 37% according to www.mypropertygenius.co.uk, which is a

fantastic tool to use when either selling or buying properties as it provides indicative figures and local trends. With a network of over 330 offices worldwide, including in excess of 30 in London, our applicant database is comprehensive and farreaching. Our experienced staff separate us from our competitors. All have bought and sold property recently and as a result know only too well the importance of communication throughout the process. All of the above, combined with our exceptional bespoke service and competitive fees, mean that Knight Frank should be your first choice for selling properties of all shapes and sizes.

YM and Heath get a break before the run in Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor Both Horsham YMCA and Broadbridge Heath have had a welcome break from their league battles and their attempts to finish in the upper places of the Southern Combination Football League, both teams resuming action tomorrow (Saturday 21). YM last played on January 10 when they beat Uckfield 3-1 while Heath have had a longer layoff, being last in action in the 4-1 win

over Newhaven on January 7, their fifth win on the bounce, although one of the ‘wins’ was the controversial match against YM, which will now be replayed. Both teams, especially YM, have had major injury problems all season causing both team managers - Peter Buckland at YM and Steve Painter at Heath – to send out patched up sides on a number of occasions; so the break has been welcome. It could be argued Heath have coped the better as Painter’s side currently sit in sixth place with

Action from the controversial YM v Heath match

41 points and are looking to push on for a heady top four finish. YM are ninth on 33 points and a decent run of results from now to the end of the season could still see them also break into the top places of the division. YM have a difficult home match against fifth placed Eastbourne United this Saturday while Heath will be looking to extend their winning run as they travel to lowly Arundel who are only being kept of the bottom spot by the division’s whipping boys, Hailsham Town.

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Sussex are returning to Cricketfield Road this summer to stage two matches as official warm up games for their T20 campaign. Horsham Cricket Club are excited to be chosen for this feast of cricket – as part of Chris Nash’s testimonial - on Wednesday June 21. Initially, former Horsham player Chris had envisaged an informal T20 game between a few of his county colleagues and a Horsham XI, but Sussex are keen to take the opportunity to stage the two practice games away from Hove, the first starting at 11am and the second at 3pm – and the good news is that entry will be free. Sussex will be up against a special Premier League XI and then a Horsham team boosted by

several county pros. Horsham Chairman Richard Marshall told the District Post: “Sussex begin their T20 programme shortly after the games at the club and tell us that they want to use the two matches as proper full on competitive practice. They will be bringing their full squad so we expect to see Luke Wright and all the Sussex stars, including Jofra Archer and the new signings. We enjoy staging Sussex 2nd XI games, which we’ll be doing again this summer, but it’ll be great to see the full Sussex side back at the club. The county say they really want to return to us and the players have always told us that they love playing at the club because the wickets are good, it’s a happy hunting ground for Sussex and we give them a good welcome. We’ve got a proud track record of

putting on memorable festivals and these T20 games will give us a welcome opportunity to show case the club and what we can do to the new CEO Rob Andrew and his re-vamped team.” It is hoped that Horsham’s other county players – Will Beer, George Garton and Tom Haines will play in the T20s, possibly subject to Sussex’s 2nd XI requirements, Marshall adding: “We’re looking forward to a great day at the club - Chris Nash started with us when he was seven, he’s a smashing lad, has time for everybody and has been a good servant to Sussex. Again, last season he was outstanding despite the county’s poor showing and he thoroughly deserves his testimonial. I hope his return to us really works out well for him, the county and ourselves.”

Battling Horsham defeated in masterclass London 2 South East Horsham 12 - 53 Medway Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter The game was marked by a one minute silence respecting the untimely passing of Simon Bell from the exceptional local sporting family. Simon’s son Will and his nephew Jordan were playing for Horsham, while his mother, other son Sam – prevented by injury – were spectating on the touchline and brother Richard was coaching at the match. After a tough first half Horsham dominated for the first two thirds of the second before finally being overwhelmed. Last season Medway were third in the league above but were relegated for paying a player registered as an amateur and only escaped starting this season on minus 25 points

on appeal. They had won all 13 of their previous games, including resounding thrashings, now heading the table by 16 points, and should clearly be in a higher league. Medway opened the scoring with a converted try before Nick Bell got over the line to put Horsham on the board, but that was as close as it was going to get. The visitors went further ahead with another try but were thwarted on the line by Johnny Ordidge and Jordan Bell ahead of succeeding with a penalty and notching up their third try, converted from close range. Then, just before half time they staggered across the line - despite two ongoing Horsham tackles – to lead 5-27 at the break. Then, as Medway players received lengthy strictures from the referee, Horsham enjoyed prolonged possession and with

Jonny Whiting pushing, were stopped just short of the line ahead of Jordan Smith getting over, Captain Tom Johnson adding the extras. But Medway soon followed up with their fifth and sixth tries, which, with one conversion took the score to 12-39. Then, with Horsham’s Richard Tredgett red carded for a shoulder on head tackle, Medway ran amok with two more maximised tries, the second to finish strongly 53-12 to the good. Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker said: “I was happy with our commitment and physicality. The scoreline flattered them a bit – we paid a big price for occasional errors and that’s hard to swallow.” Horsham, still sixth, return to action on January 28 with a visit to Kent to play Charlton Park (fourth), to whom they lost in October.

After losing their last seven league games Horsham need to turn things round fairly soon if they are to escape the threat of relegation from their highest ever league, and they duly put in an impressive performance against high flying Bromley & Beckenham. On the first day of the season Horsham were shaded one nil by Brom Becks and the return fixture was equally tight, the goal-less first half belonging to Horsham, who might have scored twice. Absentees resulted in a changed Horsham line up and the revised midfield formation seemed to unsettle the hosts while creating opportunities for Horsham, who took the lead a quarter of an hour into the second half when Ellis Woolley converted a well taken short corner. But, Brom Becks promptly equalised from a contentious penalty, the reason for which bemused Horsham and spectators alike, then worse followed when Brom Becks went ahead after somehow managing to thread

through a close range shot. To Horsham’s great credit they maintained belief and kept pressing, resulting in a penalty coolly flicked home by player coach Dom Male to share the points. Horsham Team Manager Al Campbell told the District Post: “Although pre match we would have been happy with a point, we could have pulled off a big surprise if we’d converted all of the chances we had. Despite our lowly position we showed real conviction and defended well, depriving them of any corners. And, at last, we had a bit of the rub of the green.” Captain Andy Isaacs, who had another outstanding game, added: “We played well for the full 70 minutes – hard graft!” Brom Becks are the only unbeaten side in the league. Only two other teams have held them to a draw and Horsham have also beaten new leaders Havant, so the signs are encouraging – especially as Horsham play beleaguered Guildford at Broadbridge Heath tomorrow (Saturday) – 12 noon start. Guildford are marooned at the bottom of the table without a point and have scored just eight goals from their 11 matches, while conceding 52 – statistics unmatched by any other team.

George Gaskin brace delivers fine Horsham win George Gaskin fires home his first of the night

Ryman Football League South Division Horsham 2 - 0 Three Bridges Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter This game was originally scheduled for last month but was postponed at the last moment because the ground was frozen, Tuesday’s conditions were also very cold, but diehard supporters were treated to Horsham’s second win in four days, earning six precious points. Before the match Horsham

Manager Dom Di Paola said: “Three Bridges are far better than their position indicates. They have had a tough time of it with injuries but have recently got their team back together and have picked up. We will be in for a stern test. With 17 games to go we still have a huge chunk of the season to play. This is a big game and a derby and we want to be at our best.” And, Horsham had to defend stoutly to negate Bridges’ attacks, of which there were plenty – especially in the second half. But, Horsham also created consistent opportunities, two of

which were crucially converted by George Gaskin. Horsham took the lead in the seventh minute when an innocuous shot was saved but not cleared and Gaskin coolly fired home. Next, Josh Pelling was called on to pull off a save high to his right from a Bridges free kick just outside the area. Then, Gaskin’s bicycle kick went just wide before he had another shot stopped and was unable to convert a headed pass before Bridges nodded inaccurately from a corner and then air kicked when well-positioned in front of goal.

Early in the second half Horsham pressed hard, Ollie Gill’s header was parried and his back kick narrowly evaded the net, a Gaskin side flick passed the right post and Tom Lawley and Jordan Clark had successive unfulfilled strikes. But, Bridges were also competing, drawing a prostrate save from Pelling, shooting wide and then blazing over. A Horsham corner was headed past by Jordan Clark ahead of a Bridges attempt just being tipped away and then, crucially, an opportunity for an equaliser was missed in a one on one confrontation. Gaskin,

though, remained a threat and when he found himself unmarked at close range in the 90th minute he capitalised, putting the game to bed. Bridges had two corners right at the death but to no avail. Dom Di Paola summed up with: “That was a good all round performance. The boys battled hard, giving all for each other. Great defence and a clean sheet – I’m very pleased with that!” Tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham travel to fellow mid-tablers Faversham, whom they beat 4-3 at Gorings Mead on bonfire night.

Two goal Kirkwood gains revenge for Hornets Ryman League Division One South Horsham 2 – 0 Dorking Wanderers Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor In the reverse fixture to this one, back in mid-November, Horsham were on the end of an embarrassing 7-1 thrashing from the then clear league leaders Dorking Wanderers. Since then Horsham have put in some very good performances and have put together a good run of form. This win extended the Hornets run of undefeated games to six, while Wanderers have taken an alarming dip in form, taking only one point since the turn of the year and conceding the top spot to Tooting & Mitcham. Coming into this match the heavy defeat at Dorking would have been a worry to all concerned with Horsham but it soon became apparent that the Surrey team’s big dip in confidence meant they were a shadow of the side that put Dom Di Paola’s men to the sword just 3 months ago. It was probably the combination of Horsham’s wariness and Wanderers nervousness that produced such a dire start to the match, which did not really improve for the whole of the first half. With over 10 minutes of non-eventful football played the first bit of meaningful action came from Dorking with Horsham’s Josh Pelling doing well to pounce low and stop Jake Beecroft‘s goal bound

effort from giving the visitors a lead. Minutes after nearly gifting Horsham a goal through a poor pass, Wanderers ‘keeper Matt Willard then pulled off a good save to deny George Gaskin. The rest of the half was just as forgettable with the only moments of any note being when Horsham’s Ashley Jones put a dangerous cross out for a corner and ‘keeper Pelling saving from Beecroft’s fierce long range effort; the underworked Horsham keeper then reacted quickly to save again as defender Dean Gunner got to the rebound. But that was about it. However, despite the poor entertainment, the goalless half time stalemate was a far better situation than the last time the two met as at the same stage in November Wanderers were leading 4-0. The old cliché ‘game of two halves’ sprung to mind as from the start of the second 45 both teams showed greater purpose and energy. Wanderers in particular came out with real urgency and much of the opening 5 minutes was played in Horsham’s half which culminated in Pelling again saving a fierce shot at goal, this time from Gunner. It then became the Wanderers ‘keeper’s turn to pull off a save as Matt Willard dived to stop Scott Kirkwood’s free kick. Already the half had contained far more action than the whole of the first period. Dorking’s Matt Briggs hit the side netting when he should have at least of made Pelling work and Kirkwood again came close at the other end. Sub-

stitute George Branford came on for Tony Nwachukwu and then, just after the hour, the breakthrough came. A Horsham free kick from just outside the area was superbly struck by the lively Kirkwood who bent his effort into the top corner of Willard’s goal. Horsham had a great chance to make it two but the usually reliable Darren Boswell made a total mess of connecting with a low cross with an open goal before him. The game continued as an end to end affair with efforts and chances aplenty for both sides. Pelling’s good form in the Horsham goal is a lot to do with the recent fine run of results and the Hornets stopper had to be at his best once again to prevent Ben Dyett’s first time effort from giving the visitors an equaliser. Somehow the match officials came up with 6 minutes of stoppage time, although nobody in the ground could see where they found the six minutes from in a stoppage free half. Horsham need not have worried however as during the added time Dyett was shown a second yellow for a poor challenge on Branford. Then the match official Austin rounded off a refereeing performance that contained numerous erratic and baffling decisions by awarding a penalty against Wanderers for handball that many players and spectators alike failed to see or appeal for. From the spot kick Kirkwood scored his and his team’s second goal and the Hornets took the 3 points and some revenge for their thrashing at Dorking’s Westhumble Park ground.
