life savers win Royal Humane Society award Peter Brackley

Three people who helped save the life of a man in Horsham have been given the Royal Humane Society award. Alex Morris, Jonny Fairall and Anita Beaken, stepped in decisively when the man looked likely to die. Their intervention revived the stricken heart attack victim while 999 services were on their way and he later recovered after hospital treatment.

Earlier this year former football commentator Peter Brackley collapsed and had a cardiac arrest while speaking at a meeting of The North West Sussex Seagulls being held at The Holbrook Club in Horsham. The three bystanders did Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation, known as CPR, and used an Automated External Defibrillator, located at a local parade of shops, to help deliver life saving actions. Alex, Jonny and Anita had recently attended a British Heart Foundation Heartstart Course run by Horsham Responders. They identified that he was not breathing normally, called for an

ambulance and delivered a lifesustaining shock with a defibrillator fetched from the Public Access Defibrillation site at Coltsfoot Drive shops. These actions greatly contributed to Peter’s survival before a volunteer Community First Responder and the Ambulance Service arrived. Marc Harrold, Team leader of Horsham Community Responders, approached The Royal Humane Society, whose Patron is The Queen, and successfully put the three forward for the prestigious Royal Humane Society Award for ‘Restoring a man to Life’. Marc said “ I was so impressed on my arrival at the scene by their actions

and cool heads, that I had to find a way of publically recognising their public spirited action. Putting them forward for these awards, was a small way of doing this.” Following on from Peter’s successful resuscitation The North West Sussex Seagulls have donated a defibrillator to The Holbrook Club and Horsham Community Responders have run ‘Heartstart’ courses for members of the club. Mr Brackley, in his 60s, from East Preston, later helped present a defribrillator at the club and said : “It is, of course, only through the expertise and dedication of the extraordinary people

who rushed to my aid that I am still alive to tell the tale. “I certainly owe them a huge debt of gratitude for what they did to rescue me in my hour of need. “They all do amazing work, and long may it continue.” If you are interested in learning life saving skills and how to use a defibrillator then please contact the scheme through their Facebook page (Horsham Community Responders) or e-mail admin@ horshamresponders.org to find out when the next free of charge British Heart Foundation ‘Heartstart’ course is being run.

Brighton will enable the charity to support veterans to live independently. Registration for the 100k, which will kick off in South West London on July 1 2017, is currently open with an early-bird registration fee of £50 for the 100k until December 31. For those not wanting to walk the full distance there is also a relay option available for teams of four walking 25k each. Teams taking part in the relay have a

registration fee of £100. The allinclusive entrance fee for participants includes lunch, dinner and breakfast at three rest stops, snacks and refreshments along the route and a free event t-shirt. The London to Brighton 100k challenge is Blind Veterans UK’s biggest annual fundraiser and takes participants from a starting point in South West London, along the banks of the Thames, through countryside paths in Surrey, Sussex and the North and South Downs to the charity’s centre in Ovingdean, Brighton. Sophie Hill, Fundraising Events Officer at Blind Veterans UK, said: “This is a tough but exciting challenging event which will allow participants to enjoy the sunrise over the South Downs while raising money for charity. Many of the veterans the charity supports are taking part in the 100k themselves. It is a great opportunity to meet them and hear their inspiring stories. “All you need to do is train hard and turn up on the day in your free 100k t-shirt. We provide the route and you will get lunch, dinner and breakfast at three rest stops along with snacks, refreshments and plenty of encouragement!” To sign up for the Blind Veterans UK 100k, please visit blindveterans.org.uk/100k.

An angel, donkeys, sheep and characters from the Christmas Story enabled residents and visitors to enjoy last Saturday’s Nativity Trail and Christmas Carfax Bandstand in Horsham. Children and families took part part in the Family Nativity Trail and enjoyed meeting Mary and Joseph at the Bishopric General Market, along with real donkeys, shepherds with real sheep and angels in The Forum, wise men in the Carfax Amphitheatre and having their photo taken at a ‘Pierstyle’ Nativity Scene in Market Square. Children clutched their very own fresh retelling of the Christmas story – a mini book called “The Well Good News of Christmas” – and red, white

and green ‘Happy Birthday Jesus’ balloons. The area around the Carfax Bandstand was packed as children were captivated by the Children’s Musical Nativity directed by Mark and Lou Bradbury of Little Notes. Mary and Joseph arrived with two donkeys from East Clayton Farm and found that there was ‘no room at the inn’ as they trailed around four market stalls, only to be turned away on their journey around Bethlehem. The crowd watched watch the ‘pantomime’ camel arrive and join other Christmas story characters at the Nativity scene in front of the Carfax Bandstand. It was arranged by Horsham Churches Together.

Reindeer run helps hospice On the reindeer run

New Food & Drink Menu Students raised nearly £3,000 in a day for charity with their Reindeer Run. Suitably dressed Elgar House students at The Weald school in Billingshurst, complete with antlers, held the run for Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice, raising more than £2,800. They ran the equivalent distance between the school and the hospice, near Arundel, and back, which is about 48 miles. The route was mapped out around the school campus and Station Road Gardens. Each student who took part donated £1 towards the charity and

also arranged sponsorship. Students wore Christmas jumpers, reindeer antlers and flashing red noses to add some more festive cheer. Some even dressed as Santa and various Christmas animals. Weald students have been loyal to Chestnut Tree House for four years, and to date have raised more than £10,000 for the charity. Paul Sweeney, Elgar Head of House at The Weald said: “Students always show a huge amount of effort and dedication to this event every year. They know that it supports a very worthy cause and helps children less fortunate

than themselves. Thank you to everyone that supported us, especially parents and the generous company sponsorship we received. “A special thank you to the following companies, Study Experiences, Renu Kitchens, New Street Butchers and Deli, West Sussex Flooring Ltd, Tescos and Tooveys Auctioneers.” There is still time to support students and help them smash their £3,000 target, by visiting their Just Giving page https:// www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ Paul- Sweeney17.

meeting to introduce Chichester University’s BSc (Hons) Digital and Technology Solutions (Software Engineer apprenticeship degree programme to a variety of local employers and second year ICT and Computing students. Adam Sandle said: “What we study at University really supports what we work on when we go back into the business, we earn and learn at the same time. Working at Red River and studying

Simon Pringle, of Red River, and Garry Marshall, from Lighthouse Systems. The degree takes four years to complete and the students do not need to pay any university fees as they work full-time and receive a salary, whilst attending workshops at Chichester University one day a week. Melanie Kavanagh, Subject Leader Level 2 IT (BTEC) ran the event and was delighted with the outcome: “The meeting generated a lot of interest from our current would-be apprentices, who are already being approached for interviews by the delegates’ companies. “We are very excited by this partnership with Chichester University, and look forward to “continuing to offer an alternative degree route for our talented students. Referring to Adam and James, she said: “We also got an inside view from two ex-Collyer’s students who are currently in their first year of the programme, having secured jobs with Red River Software following last year’s event.” Current Collyer’s student Alex Heroys said: “This event has inspired me to work hard to achieve the required grades for the amazing opportunities on offer.” Students are pictured at the event.

students help less fortunate youngsters Sick youngsters benefited from a Christmas concert in Horsham. The chairman of Horsham District Council Cllr Christian Mitchell attended Collyer’s Christmas Concert held at St. Mary’s Church, Causeway. The retiring collection was for Great Ormond Street Hospital, which is being supported by the college this Christmas.Mr Mitchell said: “This was a fantastic evening and I want to thank all those who worked so hard, particularly the head of choir at Collyer’s Lizzie Britton.” The concert comprised traditional Christmas carols and readings by students from the music department, along with drama and performing arts and also included ‘Walking in the Air’ from the animation ‘The Snowman’. Collyer’s student and harpist, Jacqueline Lo, played Fantaisie sur un Theme de l’Opera “Eugene Onegin’. College principal Sally Bromley read the poem ‘A child’s Christmas in Wales’ by Dylan Thomas. The Rev. Cannon Guy Bridgewater, who is a Collyer’s Governor, welcomed the packed church of students, parents and guests. J354632

Students have role models right on their doorstep as they learn the lessons of apprenticeship. Adam Sandle and James SedenSmith, both former Collyer’s students, are currently studying for the degree apprenticeship with Chichester University working at Red River Software in Horsham. And they gave Collyer’s students as insight into apprenticeship at a breakfast networking

on day release at Chichester University means we have a three way partnership that works so well”. James Seden-Smith added: “Right from the start we worked on real projects which have an impact on the business. At the moment we’re developing Apps and websites – it’s exciting stuff.” Simon Pringle, Founding Director of Red River, said: “Part of the initiatives my company have been involved with has led me to work with Diane and Melanie at Collyer’s. Through this involvement I have been introduced to and talked with many of the college’s computer science. “Two of these students have recently joined us at Red River. To our absolute delight, rather than needing a major amount of training, they have hit the ground running. Picking up new technologies and new programming languages without fear has led them to work on our flagship projects and to add to the prosperity and success of our company. Their obvious enjoyment, thirst for knowledge and comfort with new ideas and situations are a tribute to them and to the way I believe Collyer’s has developed these students.” Paul Kooner-Evans, Course Leader for the programme, spoke at length about the benefits for both employers and students. Setbacks help you succeed, youngsters told

What might be seen as setbacks can act as a spur in chasing a career, students were told. Preparing for the world of work was the theme of presentations to Collyer’s students at Horsham. Pupils enjoyed presentations from a range of speakers who gave advice about how to prepare for the world of work, what makes someone ‘employable’ and how they can stand out from other candidates when applying for jobs. The talks are part of the college’s “Planning Your Future” initiative and gave students an insight into the real world of careers, business and employability skills. The event was set up by Working Options, a non-profit organisation, which aims to help students succeed in their career after education. Key business leaders spoke

about their career path since leaving college, what they saw as the defining moments and how what would naturally be perceived as setbacks actually contributed to their success and led them to where they are today. Lucy Hargreaves from the college’s Progression Directorate, who coordinated the event, said: “Our motivational speakers were truly inspiring. They are all great supporters of Collyer’s and have kindly given time and energy to help the next generation.” More than 120 students and their teachers volunteered to attend the event, demonstrating a proactive attitude in learning new skills and preparing for the future. The expert motivational speakers were Lauren Monk, Working Options; Lee Willett Marketing Director Dairy Crest;

James Millward, Managing Director, Eurilait and Honza Dusanek, Tesco and Ecommerce Director, Nestle). Student Eva Ensing said: “I’ve now got the reassurance and knowledge that there are other options available to me and have a clear idea of the skills required.” Fellow students Isla Holden and Bradley Townsend also enjoyed the event. Isla said: “This has been a great session and a good way of finding out about how to get into marketing.” Bradley added: “I now know that this is about so much more than just grades. Real world experience and a positive attitude are equally as important and valuable.” Ian McAlister, Senior Tutor at Collyer’s said: “I was incredibly proud to see the students take the event so seriously. Huge thanks must go to the presenters. The session was also well supported by Collyer’s teachers and organised brilliantly by Lucy Hargreaves from the college’s Progression Directorate.” Principal Sally Bromley, who introduced the event, said: “Huge thanks to Lucy, Lauren, Lee, James and Honza for making today possible. I was also impressed by the strong student turnout and their willingness to actively take notes and learn from our visiting experts.”

New generation of artists gets a boost Young artists at a Horsham school have been given a boost in the classroom. Care UK marked the opening of the new care home called Skylark House, the new threestorey care home on St Marks Lane, by giving £250 worth of art supplies to Holbrook Primary, just across the road. Skylark House will provide full time residential care, specialist dementia care and short term respite care for older people in Horsham and beyond, and features 82 ensuite bedrooms, its own cinema, hairdressing salon and café. Home manager Devendra Lallchand said: “What better way to mark the opening of Skylark House than by showing our support for a neighbour. We have worked closely with Holbrook Primary School to create a lovely collage for our marketing suite, made up of drawing of people they care about.

Singing carols

Senior pupils from Towers Convent School at Upper Beeding visited The Holmbush Centre to raise money for charity by sing-

ing carols to Christmas shoppers, who were delighted by the beautiful voices and accomplished instrumentalists. A large crowd

of proud parents came to support their daughters and the school. Proceeds will go to the homeless in Worthing and Brighton.

The next generation of hockey players will have advice from a top star ringing in their ears as they hone their skills in the New Year. The Rio Olympic Games Gold Medallist and Great Britain Hockey goalkeeper Maddie Hinch called into Horsham and staged a session of tips for young players. Maddie was at Christ’s Hospital for the official opening of the School’s new all-weather surface hockey pitch. She starred as Great Britain’s women’s hockey team made history in Rio by winning their first Olympic gold, with Maddie was instrumental in this achievement by saving all four penalties in the shootout. In her speech declaring the pitch formally open, Maddie thanked everyone for having her and complimented the ‘beautiful’ surface of the new pitch. After firing a couple of opening shots into the goal, Maddie thrilled some of the School’s goalkeepers by giving them a coaching session. During this session she concentrated on fundamental movements and position of feet when kicking before introducing diving and

smothering. Lydia Thornhill, 15, one of the goalkeepers said: “It was an honour to meet Maddie and train with her, and I know it will improve my hockey for the future. The session really improved my techniques and skills.” Dave Messenger, Director of Sport at Christ’s Hospital said: “It was an honour to have arguably the most famous hockey player in the world, at this moment in time, come to the School to open our new pitch. She was a superb inspiration for the pupils who met her.” Head Master, John Franklin, thanked all the supporters who had made this new pitch possible, in particular Bluecoat Sports. Construction of the all-weather hockey pitch at Christ’s Hospital began back in the summer and was completed by October half term. Flood lit and situated adjacent to the tennis courts, the hockey pitch will add to the facilities offered at the School to help train the next generation of athletes, whatever the weather. Action from the day is pictured.

Family support crucial Xmas Treat bridges says hospice for children generation gap

A children’s hospice has backed new national guidance on supporting the family. Shooting Star Chase hospice was responding to new National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidance about improving palliative care by supporting the whole family during a child’s end of life. The hospice’s Director of Care Helen Sibley said: “Shooting Star Chase wholeheartedly support NICE’s guidance highlighting the importance of caring for the entire family

At Shooting Star Chase we pride ourselves on our family-focused approach and whether it’s at our hospices or in the community during a child’s death. “At Shooting Star Chase we pride ourselves on our familyfocused approach and whether it’s at our hospices or in the community. We believe as well as providing first-class care for a child with a life-limiting condition who has come to the end of their life, it’s imperative parents, siblings and extended family are given support at a time so difficult, most of us find it hard to imagine. “We offer families a range of care during end of life and throughout bereavement so they receive comfort, are supported through grief, and can remember their loved one in the best way possible. “In line with NICE’s recent recommendations, Shooting Star Chase’s end-of-life support includes Hospice at Home so families get the help and advice they need if they wish to remain at home; supported children and siblings access art, play and music therapies tailored to their specific needs and understanding; and our palliative care team prepare an end-of-life care plan in close consultation with the family, which is regularly reviewed and updated with any changes the family wish to make.

“The charity is also conducting its own research into accurately identifying when a child with a life-limiting condition is likely to die to give families more time to prepare. “But caring for the whole family at the end of a child’s life is not just about practical and emotional support. Shooting Star Chase also provides opportunities for families to create special memories. “At Christmas, for example, the charity arranges Christmas parties for all ages and abilities, wheelchair-accessible ice-skating and presents for supported children and siblings to give families a Christmas to remember - as for some, this will be their last one together.” Shooting Star Chase is a leading children’s hospice charity caring

for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions, and their families. It supports families from diagnosis to end of life and throughout bereavement with a range of nursing, practical, emotional and medical care. Support is free of charge to families and available 365 days a year. Care service includes short breaks at two hospices Hospice at Home, day care, symptom management, end-of-life care, bereavement care and a comprehensive range of therapies and support groups for the whole family. It costs £10 million a year just to maintain the current level of care. Around 10% of income comes from government funding, so it relies on supporters’ generosity to keep the service running.

others. There was also dancing and a quiz to round the afternoon off. The school said that one guest commented that she had very much enjoyed the event, and looks forward to coming each year. Another had said: ““You should be very proud of your students. They are a real credit to the community and to the school.” Matthew Fry, the school’s personal development coordinator said “It was delightful to see our young people engaging with the senior citizens, talking about their time at school and bridging the generation gap. Once again our students have shown themselves to be real ambassadors in the community.”

Soft toys help youngsters love nature

Youngsters enjoyed soft toys at the Sussex Wildlife Trust near Henfield that are designed to encourage interest in wild creatures. The various Wildlife Trusts, including Sussex, are John Lewis’s

Christmas campaign charity partner. This year’s John Lewis Christmas advert celebrates, with sparkle and a flash of magic, the joy of encountering wildlife in a garden using a cast of wild creatures including a fox, badger,

squirrel and hedgehog. A contribution of 10% of the sale of soft toys from the campaign will go towards The Wildlife Trusts’ work engaging children with nature and this will include wildlife action packs for thousands of schoolchildren, activity booklets, and wildlife resources for teachers to use in lessons. At Sussex Wildlife Trust some of our Nature Tots attending who attend weekly session at Woods Mill nature reserve, Henfield, were introduced to the soft toys by Education Officer Katie Parker. The children pictured with Katie Parker are from the left Kaarina, Jamie, Mattie and Austin and Tom. No surnames were given. Nature Tots is for children aged between 3 – 5 years old and gives them the opportunity for wild play and woodcrafts designed to increase their confidence, social skills and physical coordination. Death warning over button batteries

open EVERYDAY 10AM - 9PM Santas Grotto was amazing both myself and my 8 year old son loved it!!! Definitely worth the money, what an experience!!! The best Father Christmas we have ever seen and the little ride in the old cable car to get to the Big Man was just magical.

We had a lovely time today, thank you. The Santas Grotto is very well done with great attention to detail. This was the first visit to meet Santa for my 21 month old, our Elf was very helpful entertaining her while we waited. We enjoyed taking the complementary bus from the school, with ice skating and a good mix of stalls and fairground rides it made for a great afternoon. Will definitely come back next year.

Had a lovely day yesterday here, nest santa experience we have been to! The elfs were great, but santa was fantastic well worth the money !! Great toys too.

People living in Horsham district and further afield have been given a seasonal warning about danger from children swallowing button batteries. Peter Aston, West Sussex County Council’s Trading Standards Manager, said: “This is not scaremongering. As well as being a choking hazard, if a button battery is swallowed by a child, the electrical charge creates caustic soda inside the body. “This can burn a hole through the throat and major blood vessels and children can bleed to death.” Parents and others buying children’s Christmas toys or already having bought them are being urged to ensure any small ‘button’ batteries are securely fixed in place. Button batteries are used to power many children’s toys, but are highly dangerous if accidentally swallowed. Parents and carers are also warned not to leave replacement button cell batteries or other items powered by button cells within reach of young children. Examples of such products are calculators, hearing aids, children’s toys, small remote controls, musical greeting cards, animated Christmas decorations, children’s thermometers, flameless candles and nightlights David Barling, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services, said: “We really urge parents and carers to ensure all products that use button batteries have the battery compartment properly secured so that a child can’t access them. It is not worth the risk.” If you have bought a toy that allows easy access to button cell batteries you can let Trading Standards online at www. westsussex.gov.uk/tsreport or via Citizens Advice on 03454 040506.

Pupils at Farlington performed “Scrooge” before Christmas break Here Jane Williams from the school presents her review. “Not a “Bah humbug!” in sight but candy canes aplenty! Scrooge is such a well-known story that it can be difficult to bring it back to life without the ghosts of productions past! Emma Spires and her young performers achieved sparkling originality in one fell swoop by throwing away the script – quite literally - and devising their production from scratch. They breathed fresh new life into this well-loved tale using the technique of Charles Dickens (Amelia Bell) appearing in a young girl’s (Ella Jones) room to narrate his tale. The combination of Amelia and Ella worked perfectly to guide the audience through the evening. They looked relaxed and chatted as if old friends which, by the end, we felt they were! Scrooge himself was played by the multi-talented Amy Hourihan. She transformed before our eyes from the original grumpy old man to party-throwing benevolent benefactor. Amy ensured the transformation was believable, showing an assured and thoughtful stage presence throughout. The Cratchit family comprising Bob (Lucy Pocock), Emily (Millie Bubb), Belinda (Florence Mckenzie) Martha (Saffron HillChambers) and of course Tiny Tim (Millie Lewis) showed us how we should all behave, despite misfortune. The group worked together very well and had clearly clicked as a team. Lucy Pocock also played Jacob and Millie played Marley, which

led to a lovely, deliberate, jumponstage-at- the-wrong- time ‘surprise’ moment early on. This showed just how much the young performers had embraced the freedom of devised drama and allowed the audience to relax and enjoy the surprises to come. There were the traditional ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet-To- Come… except the names were the only traditional thing about them! Once again the sheer delight and enjoyment of the cast came through the performances of Amelia Wright and Gracie Wilkinson - Ghosts of Christmas Past. These good-time party girls owned the stage (and entire studio theatre) with their spirited (no pun intended) performance. These modern ‘it’ girls took Scrooge travelling through time by Tube to show him the errors of his ways in times gone by, then handed over to the equally talented Caitlin Ruddy and Pia Roberts as the Ghosts of Christmas Present, before Gracie transformed herself entirely into the dark and ominous figure of Christmas Yet-To- Come. Scrooge’s nephew Fred was played superbly by Emily Higgs, already a seasoned performer despite being in Year 7, clearly a talent to watch in future productions. Similarly, ones to watch out for in the future are: Olivia Watts as Fred’s wife, Constance; Phoebe Bloor-Black as Mr Fezziwig; Maddy Schlaefli as Mrs Fezziwig; and Issy Birch as the school teacher.

All of the above were delightfully supported by the chorus consisting of Issy Birch, Phoebe Bloor- Black, Phoebe Foden, Emily Higgs, Saffron Hill-Chambers, Lucy Hunt, Millie Lewis, Florence McKenzie, Maddy Schlaefli and Olivia Watts. Genuinely seasoned (i.e. significantly older) girls supported the actresses by doing make-up (Rosie Wales) and as Assistant Directors, Abigail Hart and Rebecca Farman, who also oversaw sound and lights for the show. It is lovely to see the older girls so involved in and enjoying the work of younger girls. I have no doubt that the young crew will delight in watching the Upper School Production next term and be inspired by it. Other invaluable contributions from the older girls were Stage Managers Amber Dale and Lauren Elliott, with the set being painted by Erin Clarke, Rebecca Farman, Eleanor Li and Nicky Wong, under the skilled guidance of our Head of Art, Rosalyn Sprey. I cannot recall when I enjoyed a performance of Scrooge more. This gem of devised drama showed how energy and talent can be poured into the bare bones of a good tale. The directing talent of Emma Spires allowed the Lower School girls the freedom to show off and stretch their talents: which surely is what drama is all about? What struck the audience most was how much fun the cast had, which of course meant we all had a good time too! It kicked off the party season with aplomb so,Merry Christmas one and all!”

Pulborough concede early lead but stay second London 3 South East Haywards Heath 20 - 7 Pulborough Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Boro went ahead courtesy of a Nick Haynes try, converted by skipper Simon Burfiend in the absence of Frazer Oliphant-Hope and they maintained their seven nil advantage up to the break. But, that was as good as it got for Boro, who fell to their third defeat in their last four matches.

They were unable to add further points as Haywards Heath came more and more into the game with their big forwards creating unsustainable pressure, two tries resulting. A Heath penalty then gave them a 13-7 lead before a converted try sealed Boro’s fate. Head Coach Clayton Saunders told the District Post: “Haywards Heath are an improving side and we conceded too many knock ons. We missed a penalty and levelled off, perhaps we got a bit complacent, allowing them to run us out of room. We return to

league action on January 7 with a home game against Aylesford Bulls - we beat them 21-39 in September’s away fixture and they’ve been struggling but they drew against Haywards Heath and have got some of their big boys back. They’ve moved two places up from the bottom after beating Gillingham Anchorians today, so they are improving. We’re still second and have got 10 games left, including six at home, so there’s plenty to play for in the run in”. Thanet Wanderers head the table, five points clear of Boro.

Horsham shaded by persistent Hove U14 Hawks winning Horsham were narrowly beaten

Some strong tackling from Hove

Photos by Richard Harman London 2 South East Horsham 28 - 32 Hove Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter

After conceding an early try Horsham fought back well, building up a good lead only to fade in the second half, forfeiting their sixth spot to the visitors, against

Bears mauled by Hawks U16 Horsham Hawks 83 – 43 U16 SRWA Bears Basketball Following recent reversals U16 Horsham Hawks bounced back with an impressive 83 - 43 home win over Lancing based SRWA Bears. Hawks took early control of the game with Kieran Lee and Jamie Miller shooting well while the strong defence initially restricted Bears to a solitary basket in the opening 5 minutes. Although Hawks found themselves 11-2 to the good, Bears began to impose themselves offensively with 6 unanswered points before the teams traded buckets for the remainder of the quarter which closed with Hawks ahead 17-12. Q2 started well for Bears with strong inside play and accurate perimeter shooting for an 8-2 run to take a single point lead midway through the period. Defensively they were stifling Hawks dribble penetration and although an

excellent 3 pointer from James Maclean added to the Hawks tally this was a rare basket as Hawks found it extremely difficult to convert any of the numerous opportunities they were starting to create. Following a timeout late in the half Hawks suddenly found their range with Louis Dishington leading the way with consecutive scores. Maclean added another with clever inside work and then point guard John Raby pressured his opposite number into back to back turnovers and a half time 33-26 lead. The second half was a complete transformation with Hawks producing their finest basketball of the season in a rampant offensive display that ripped Bears defence to pieces with third quarter baskets flowing from the hands of Lee, Maclean and Raby. Defensively Hawks upped their intensity making life much more difficult for their south coast visitors. Lee had to leave the court for a head injury but his absence

whom they have had a good record in recent encounters. Initially Hove pushed over in the corner from a five yard scrum, the kick missing by a mile, the same fate befalling their penalty - before Horsham pressure enabled Nick Bell to cross the line, converted by Tom Johnson out to the right. Joe Wilde then broke through on a dinking run for an impressive try, again converted by Johnson - well back on the touchline. George Palmer immediately embarked on strong incursion but was bundled off with a high tackle, Johnson maximising the penalty try and Horsham were suddenly 21-5 up at half time. Undaunted, Hove came back strongly, grub kicking, picking up and finalising. The conversion went begging before Johnny Ordidge crashed over despite the clutches of three tacklers, and, with Johnson off injured, Will Bell converted to give Horsham a 28-10 lead. Then, two Horsham penalties went adrift and they lost shape, Hove drives culminating in a try under the posts and a screw kick conversion. Worse followed when Hove got through on the right for their third try and although the kick failed, Horsham’s advantage was fast evaporating as missed tackles enabled Hove to notch up their fourth try. With Horsham just one point to the good and defending tigerishly they were reduced to 13 men and Hove snatched a very late try by the right corner flag to steal the game 28-32. Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker told the District Post: “We’re a young side with a few injuries, and they’re useful with strong backs but it was frustrating to lose like that – we needed to step up.” Horsham next play on January 7 when they travel to struggling Bromley, whom they beat 52-47 at home in September.

wasn’t noticed as Hawks continued to pile on the pressure to extend their lead to 52-37 going into the final period. Q4 was a simply sublime 10 minutes for Hawks almost completely closing down the Bears offence with Ollie Hutt outstanding to restrict them to a miserly 6 points. Offensively Hawks blitzed Bears with a stunning variety of

again with a 13-6 run extending their lead to 47-31 with Horsham responding with two made free throws and a drive from Josh Tavolieri eating into the deficit before a late Eagles three pointer put the Eagles ahead 50-35 with one quarter to go. Six year wait ended with Hornets victory in Kent Late winner Lewis Hyde’s powerful header in the gloom gave Hornets victory

The game lasted the 90 minutes despite the foggy conditions

It would have been typical Kentish bad luck for Horsham if match referee Jack Packman had decided to abandon this match as the already foggy conditions

deteriorated in the latter stages. But, although during most of the second half visibility was extremely poor, Mr Packman allowed the match to continue and Horsham came away from the Garden of England with a long awaited victory. The last time Horsham won in Kent was way back in 2010 so there were no great expectations going into the game, and even less as manager Di Paola had to put out a makeshift side due to his long injury list. In addition Joe Shelley, Matt Axell, Ollie Gill and Tom Lawley all unable to make it to the game. The shortages, especially in the forward line, meant Di Paola had no option other than to play defender Charlie Farmer as the central striker. The football itself however never lived up to in drama the scene that the scratch side, the thick fog and the historic Hornets

victory set; at times it was probably a blessing for the supporters that the visibility was restricted. The game was dominated by both defences; however the lack of quality in the final third gave both sets of defenders and both goalkeepers every chance to shine. The first half contained very little of any note other than a clash between Alex Duncan and Herne Bay’s captain Danny Walder that earned the Horsham man a yellow card and right at the end of the half a good effort from Darren Boswell was cleared off the line and a Ben Gorham header was well saved by Hornet’s ‘keeper Josh Pelling. The second half continued in much the same vein as the first 45 with only the suspense of ‘will he or won’t he call it off’ to keep the spectators amused. However the second half did contain one memorable moment, a Horsham goal, and a winning one at that. With an hour played Scott Kirkwood’s corner was met by Lewis Hyde who leapt above all in the gloom to head past home ‘keeper Jack Delo. Horsham then had a scare when Connor Sanders hit the post with Pelling beaten while at the other end Hyde nearly scored his second but he placed his headed inches wide. Horsham were then reduced to 10 men with 8 minutes remaining when, after bringing down Danny Williams, Duncan was shown a second yellow. It was however going to be Horsham’s day even more so when once again the home side hit the woodwork; Williams crashing a long range effort against the bar. Despite frantic efforts by Herne Bay to equalise in the dying minutes Horsham hung on for a first Kent away day victory in six long years.

gives YM the points SCFL Premier Division Horsham YMCA 3 - 2 Peacehaven & Telescombe Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor Horsham YMCA brought to an end their poor run of form that had not seen them win in any competition since their 7-1 thumping of Lancing in the FA Vase back in early November. The long awaited victory came in dramatic fashion as after taking a two goal lead YM allowed visitors Peacehaven & Telescombe back into the match as they hit two quick goals just after the hour mark. YM however grabbed all 3 points with a winner deep into stoppage time. A goal in the 15th minute from Nick Sullivan gave YM a half time lead against their very competitive visitors. The match looked safe 5 minutes after the restart when Sullivan grabbed his and YM’s second of the afternoon but plucky Peacehaven had other ideas. Curtis Ford pulled one back on 63 minutes and then 5 minutes later Conor Wilkins shocked the home support by scoring the equaliser. When it looked like Peacehaven were leaving with a deserved point YM took an overdue victory with Nick Sullivan again involved. Sullivan this time turning provider as his pin point cross 4 minutes into stoppage time was met by Phil Johnson’s head to take all 3 points. YM next play on December 27 when they will hope to put a run of wins together with a visit to Crawley Down Gatwick.

Painter’s patched up side does him proud SCFL Premier Division Littlehampton Town 0 - 3 Broadbridge Heath Football Mick Robinson - BBHFC Broadbridge Heath travelled to The Sportsfield missing several regulars due to suspension and injuries with Manager Steve Painter bringing in Alex Parsons and Jermaine Beer for their first starts of the season and moving full back Jamie Robinson to a more forward role. The several players missing were in fact eight first team regulars; Piers McDermott, Jake Holmes and Ross Swaine suspended, Scott Weller and Andy Howard injured and three unavailable Shaun Findlay, Tim Martin and Dean Wright. All eight would have been near certain to have made the starting line-up. There was an early scare for Heath when Littlehampton broke down the right flank and Mitchell Hands’ cross was just too far in front of George Gaskin, the ball running to safety. In the 10th

minute Jamal Sultan played into Beer’s feet, his snap shot just missing the post. Six minutes later, Beer was again involved, winning the ball in midfield and returning the favour feeding Sultan, whose cross was met by an unmarked Alex Parsons who duly side footed past Luke Hutchings in the Littlehampton goal. Heath were beginning to settle into their stride and in the 32nd minute doubled their lead. A Robinson corner was fumbled by Hutchings, the ball falling to Marlon Maxwell who smashed the ball into the roof of the net. The second half started with chances at both ends, the first falling to Littlehampton, Gaskins’ shot parried by Michael Chester and the ball falling to Hand, his first time shot whistling past the post. Seconds later Robinson was put through by Ollie Moore, his cross scrambled away by Littlehampton. Heath made the game safe with six minutes remaining with the goal of the game, the ball cleared to the edge of the box by the Littlehampton defence, the ball falling invitingly to Moore who hit a sublime volley over Hutchings.
