Father hopes cameras can stop deaths phil dennett News Editor
A father whose son killed himself after being bullied on a school bus is backing research into how security cameras might prevent similar tragedies. Ben Vodden’s death ten years ago led to his distraught father Paul launching a string campaign to combat bullying on school buses, including calls for drivers to be made aware of the issue. Now to mark the sad decade milestone Paul has commissioned new research that shows how effective CCTV might be in reducing bullying attacks. As part of nationwide activity during Anti-Bullying Week Paul announced the new research project in collaboration with York St John University. Paul is all too familiar with the tragic effects of bullying. In December 2006, Ben, aged 11, from Southwater, near Horsham, took his own life after being bullied on the school bus. Paul said: “2016 marks ten years since we lost our wonderful son Ben. No child should have to go through what Ben did. Since then, we have campaigned in his memory to try and ensure that more support is in place to help prevent school bus bullying. “We have published two reports which reveal some shocking facts about the bullying that goes on every day, on school buses. Our
research has revealed that the school bus can be a dangerous breeding ground for both physical and verbal bullying and not enough is being done to prevent it or to deal with it when it does occur.” Following 2014’s first Vodden Report which revealed research into bullying on the school bus from the young person’s per-
We have published two reports which reveal some shocking facts about the bullying that goes on every day, on school buses spective, the second edition of The Vodden Report called In The Driver’s Seat published last year, explored the views of bus and coach drivers who transport children to and from school. The report conclusion outlined some key recommendations including a complete and comprehensive assessment of CCTV use on school coaches. The new research being undertaken is the result of this. Paul Vodden said: “We know that CCTV is only one of several tools available to help combat school bus bullying and we want to better understand, and drive discussion about its effectiveness, with a view to creating a new code of conduct for the use of CCTV on school buses.”

Low turnout as Tory party scores overwhelming victory Only one potential voter in five turned out when Conservatives easily held a seat on Horsham District Council after a by-election. The turnout was 20 per cent when Billy Greening was elected to represent Southwater. His vote of 1046 was nearly double that of the combined votes for the other three candidates. Mr Greening finished more than 700 votes ahead of his nearest challenger, Liberal John Greenwood. The by-election was called
because of the death of Conservative councillor Ian Howard earlier this year. The full result of the byelection in order of votes won is: Billy George Greening, Conservative, 1046 (elected); not elected were John Greenwood, Liberal Democrat, 308; Kevin Stephen Greenwood, Labour Party, 118; Uri Baran, UK Independence Party, 109. Conservatives hold an overwhelming majority in the district council chamber at Horsham.

Ceiling of light not just for Christmas Horsham is lit up for Christmas after the switching-on of its festive lights. The new all LED scheme has already been described on social media as ‘the best for many years’. Its launch date coincided with Swan Walk Shopping Centre turning on its own Christmas decorations including its popular animated snowman tableaux. Designed, supplied and installed by The Festive Lighting Company under a new three year contract with Horsham District Council, Horsham’s Christmas lighting and decorations are funded in collaboration with the town’s Neighbourhood Councils. Horsham District Council Chairman Cllr Christian Mitchell said:“This year’s Christmas lighting looks classy and contemporary and makes a fantastic display which will attract people into the town centre over the festive period. “A key ‘added value’ feature of the new scheme this year is the ‘ceiling of light’ effects in East Street which is intended to remain in place throughout the entire year.
The cone Christmas tree will return to the Carfax bandstand at the end of November. This year it is sponsored by Horsham Ice Rink and has been updated to match the new town centre scheme. “ A full programme of Christmas Markets and festive entertainment in the Carfax kicks off with the Rotary Christmas Cracker Charity Market with Horsham Markets by Food Rocks on November 27. The Fair Trade Christmas Market takes place the day before in St John’s RC Church on November 26 and the Horsham Churches Together Carol Concert, previously on the Forum with fireworks afterwards, will this year take place around the Carfax bandstand on December 17 with a town wide nativity and parade adding a more traditional message to the spectacle. For more information on all of Horsham Town Centre’s Christmas Markets, events and activities follow facebook/horshamtimewellspent or see the banners, posters and flyers around the town.

White van crimes link The van
A white van could be the vital link between two burglaries. Police investigating the burglary of a house in Shipley, near Horsham, are considering a possible link with a distraction burglary in Tarring, Worthing in early October. On both occasions, victims mentioned two men with a white van with ladders on the roof and a photo has been issued of the van involved in the Tarring incident. The burglary in Smithers Hill Lane, Shipley, happened between 12.30 and 1.50pm on October 16. Intruders had gained entry to the property and an untidy search was made inside. A large quantity of jewellery and antique items were stolen, including necklaces, earrings, rings, silver items and antique cutlery. Many of the items were of considerable sentimental value to the family from whom they were stolen. It has since emerged that two men in a white van called at the house on September 30 and walked uninvited into one of the downstairs rooms. They were both tall. The first had heavy limbs, was of fit build, with dark curly hair and light craggy skin. The second had a thin face and dyed blond hair. The descriptions and the van are very similar to those reported at a distraction burglary in Alfriston Close, Tarring, on October 5. Two men called at the house and tried to persuade the householder to pay for sealing guttering. They refused, but paid a small amount to have gutters cleared. Later, it was discovered that between £100 and £200 had been taken from a bedroom. One of the men was described as white, 6’ and in his 30s. The second was described as short and thin and aged 25-30. Detective Constable Chris Merryfield-Day said: “Thanks to the quick-thinking of a local

witness, we have a photo of the van involved at Tarring and we are working to identify the owner and its movements. While the van wasn’t seen around Shipley on the day of the burglary, it or a similar one was spotted just over a fortnight before and we would like to hear from anyone who may have seen it or indeed, been targeted by
the suspects themselves, even if unsuccessfully.” Anyone with information is asked to email 101@sussex.pnn. police.uk or call 101 quoting serial 786 of 16/10 (Shipley) or 575 of 05/10 ((Tarring). Alternatively, you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Fortnightly bin collection from 2018 Residents of Horsham district will have fortnightly rubbish bin collection by spring of 2018 in a bid to save about £1million. Details of the plan to follow the example of neighbours Mid Sussex Council were discussed at last night’s Horsham District Council cabinet meeting. The Tory-run council is being hit by a financial “pincer movement”. The Tory-controlled government has ordered it to save about £4 million over the next three years. At the same time the council says it is facing increasing demand for its services. The bin collection change is being made to help increase the amount recycled and save about £1m a year from the district council budget. The council says is under considerable pressure to increase levels of recycling and minimise the volume of household waste sent for disposal. Rising national recycling targets of 50% by 2020 require the council to revise its current waste strategy to achieve this. Horsham currently recycles
45% of its waste. The council also needs to make savings of around £4million over the next three years due to significant cuts in government funding and increasing demand for services. Under the new system the collection of material for recycling will alternate on a weekly basis with household waste. The council said more than 65% of local authorities were operating the system. Cabinet Member for Waste, Recycling and Cleansing, Councillor Roy Cornell, said: “The council is under considerable pressure to increase levels of recycling and minimise the volume of waste sent for disposal. It is therefore important that we continue to develop the service our district neighbours of Chichester and Mid Sussex are already operating. We want to encourage more people to recycle whilst managing the unprecedented Government cuts to our budget. “By moving to an alternate weekly collection system with new rear loading vehicles, we will save Horsham around £1m a year, and increase our recycling rate.”

Stand by for Theo’s big Christmas lights switch on!
Tanbridge House schoolboy Theo Comber has been busy planning another stunning Christmas lights display on the outside of his family’s home in Horsham’s Rushams Road. Last year Theo’s lights raised £1,500 for his favoured charity – Ambitious About Autism – boosted to £4,000 by his mum, Emma, and brother Zak’s efforts in running the London Marathon. Theo’s big switch on will be on
Saturday December 3 when the nearby hall at Holy Trinity Church will again open up, at 5.30pm, to host refreshments, a raffle and tombola. And, it is rumoured that Father Christmas and the Choir also hope to put in an appearance before the lights are activated by a special mystery celebrity. Thirteen year old Theo told the District Post: “There’ll be 80,000 bulbs illuminated and, new for this year we’ve got some huge lights previously used in the John
Lewis Christmas display in Oxford Street. It’s quite hard work setting it all up, but well worth it, and I’m deeply indebted to Horsham electricians David J Long for installing the show, greatly helping Ambitious About Autism by providing their services without charge. Many thanks also to Alex at Holy Trinity for allowing us to use the church hall – and, especially, to my grandmother Carla and Christine for preparing the refreshments. I’m really looking forward to the big switch on and hope that we have a really massive crowd!” The lights will be a spectacularly entertaining landmark in Horsham’s Christmas celebrations, so make a special note to come to see the display, continuing through to the first week of January. There will be a magic well in the garden next to the lights to collect donations. So, Theo is hoping that visitors will again dig deep to support his very worthy cause, helping him to match, or, better still, exceed last year’s fund raising. Details of the outstanding charity’s excellent work can be found at www.ambitiousaboutautism.org.uk . Theo’s e mail address is combertheo99@gmail. com and he would be delighted to hear from anybody wishing to contribute.

Slept out to help homeless Young people slept out to help others. The group from Autumn National Citizen Service group bedded down in the dropping temperatures overnight at the Salvation Army Centre in Horsham. A spokeswoman said: “We are all young Horsham people wanting to aid and raise awareness of homelessness in Horsham and West Sussex. “We did the sponsored sleepout and filmed it to raise awareness of the issues and to document our experience. We are using that money to distribute care packages of things people often have to choose
to not have, so they can eat, for example Vaseline, socks, feminine hygiene products, and deodorant.” National Citizen Service is a government run scheme, costing £1500 per child but members pay only pay £50 or less. It was set up by David Cameron as a four week summer program or autumn program. Teenagers of 15-17 will do a week of team building activities, a week of ‘skills building’ and then a two weeks, or several weekends of planning and doing a ‘social action project’. The Horsham group’s project is the homelessness issue.

Milestone celebrated with soup and bread Soup and bread was the celebration meal of choice for school pupils marking 20 years of fundraising for poorer people across the world. Towers Convent School at Upper Beeding has raised more than £23,000 to help alleviate poverty and injustice across the world. It has been supporting Catholic aid agency CAFOD, which works alongside communities to provide resources, training and opportunities to help people live with dignity, support their families and give something back to their communities. Rather than celebrate its fundraising success, the school has instead pledged to continue fundraising for the charity and
held a collection for the charity’s Harvest Appeal. The staff and pupils entered into the spirit of Harvest Fast Day by having soup and bread for lunch instead of their muchloved fish and chips. The school has raised more than £20,000 for CAFOD over the last 20 years. This Harvest, CAFOD is working with communities in the South American country of Bolivia, where in the Altiplano region, nearly 60% of the rural population are living below the poverty line. Unpredictable rains and frequent hailstorms are destroying the crops which the communities rely on. The charity’s partners are working to provide greenhouses
to protect crops and train communities with new farming techniques to help them grow enough crops to feed their families. The pupils fundraising will enable CAFOD’s partners to continue working with communities like those in Bolivia. CAFOD’s representative in Sussex, Nalini Nathan, said: “We would like to say a huge thank you to the pupils, their families and teachers at the Tower Convent for their continued generosity in supporting families across the world and for putting their faith into action to help create a fairer world.”Readers can donate to the Harvest Appeal at cafod.org.uk/harvest

Learning abroad could be Dutch treat Going Dutch to further their education might suit some students, says the head of a Horsham school. Collyer’s recently hosted a “Study in the Netherlands Event”, with speakers from Holland answering questions from students. Many Collyer’s students had already expressed an interest in studying abroad and were given the opportunity to ask questions of the expert speakers, who were on hand to explain the structure and nature of a variety of courses. Ian McAlister, Senior Tutor with responsibility for the Progression Directorate at Collyer’s, said: “As the majority of our students progress into Higher Education, we have found that strong results afford them a wide choice. We have also noticed that our students are becoming much more selective about those choices and it is therefore important to make them aware of new opportunities and avenues to consider. Studying in the Netherlands is certainly financially viable and socially and intellectually challenging and may well suit a good number of our students. Going Dutch?
“Dutch Universities offer a very real opportunity to study at an international level and it was great to see such enthusiasm both from our speakers and our students. Kim Zwitserloot and her team represent some exceptional educational establishments and presented superbly to a packed audience on the virtues of ‘Going Dutch’!” Kim Zwitserloot of University College Utrecht, said: “Collyer’s is a highly respected and very wellknown educational institution and it was a real pleasure and an honour to visit. We are very encouraged by the enthusiasm of the students and the genuine depth and range of their questions. There was a real buzz in the air, and you could tell that they were genuinely interested in the prospect of study in a new environment.” Other visitors were Mann Leo of University College Roosevelt, Suzanne Bosman of Erasmus University, Carolyn Barr of Leiden University, Ricardo Abbas of University of Groningen, Anne Kuijs of Tilburg University and Claudia Spierings of Maastricht University.

Bridging gap in sport for £12 million
The new £12.3 leisure centre at Broadbridge Heath will be called The Bridge, councillors have confirmed. With no new material planning objections coming forward after consultation the scheme has been given the final green light, after consideration of the plans by Horsham District Council’s Development Management Committee. The formal Planning Decision Notice has now been issued. The council says the development will deliver the biggest public “dry-side” sports and leisure centre in the district and will see a major new facility built to replace the existing Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre.
It has also been confirmed that the name of the new centre will be The Bridge, in keeping with its location between Tanbridge, Newbridge, and Broadbridge Heath and reflecting the council’s commitment to building bridges with the local community. The name was selected as a result of feedback from a public art consultation which had input from neighbouring residents and local school children. The new facility will include a six court sports hall, an 80-station gym, a cycle studio and three fitness studios, a new café, a sensory room and new changing facilities for indoor and outdoor activity, including a Changing Places disabled
changing facility. Also retained is the outdoor running track and five multi-use games areas. There will also be a climbing wall and three treatment rooms for beauty and sports therapy sessions. The new facility will be designed to meet the needs of a population that will grow significantly in the near future. It is anticipated that the new centre should open to the public in Spring 2018. Commenting on the go-ahead plans, the district council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture Cllr Jonathan Chowen said: “I am delighted that after the years of planning that have gone into such a major proposal, we are now at the stage when we can start building this exciting new development. “We have worked extensively with partners and local sports clubs to develop a proposal which meets the current and future needs of the growing and ageing population of the district and I wish to thank all those who have supported us in reaching this milestone. “The new leisure centre will bring first class leisure opportunities to local people and we are confident the new centre will exceed all expectations and provide a vibrant, multi-purpose hub of sporting and leisure activity. “At the same time, the development will be more cost effective and sustainable to manage in the future.”

It’s a gas as team works hard The restoration of a West Sussex care farm has taken another step with the help of volunteers from the Horsham depot of gas distribution company SGN. East Clayton Farm provides care services for vulnerable, disabled and marginalised young people. Owned by the National Trust, the 120-acre farm was transformed into a registered care farm 11 years ago by the Lorica Trust, with an ambitious vision for it to become a productive, thriving community. The first phase of the farm’s regeneration involved converting its outbuildings into eight independent living units for profoundly disabled young adults. The farmhouse itself was also converted into a building for training and housing unemployed young adults. East Clayton Farm Develop-

We had a very satisfying day; it was really hard work but lots of fun eight years has very much been on building the living units and converting the farmhouse. Now we’re turning our attention to the land, so we asked for SGN’s help to create a space that is tidy, clean and – most importantly – safe for our residents and visitors.”
B
Ten employees from SGN’s Sussex depot in Blatchford Road, Horsham, spent a very productive day on the farm, demolishing an old portacabin, constructing new bays to be used for storing bricks, wood and wire for later use, and filling the skip with bucket loads of farm detritus. One of the main tasks the care farm had asked for help with was creating two pathways that could be used by visitors to the farm; the first leading to the main office from the field and the other from the car park. Realising this would need specialist equipment, the SGN team enlisted the help of its reinstatement contractor Cappagh, who arrived in force with a cement mixer, sand and concrete slabs. SGN’s hire contractor, GAP, also provided a digger for the day free of charge.
The group offered their support to the farm as part of SGN’s Community Action Programme, in which every employee gets one day off work each year to help out in their local community. SGN’s Business Performance Manager Kristina Brown, who was responsible for rallying the troops from SGN’s Sussex depot, said: “I came upon East Clayton Farm quite by chance when I was looking for volunteering opportunities near our depot. The work done by Jean and her team is amazing, and they have to rely heavily on help from volunteers, so we couldn’t think of a better use of our time. “We had a very satisfying day; it was really hard work but lots of fun. The best thing was seeing
people from all different departments pulling together and having a good laugh at the same time. We all went home exhausted, but happy.” Speaking after the team had left, Jean added: “They put in a phenomenal amount of very hard work with no lunch break. There was much fun and laughter all day, and they were just incredibly warm-hearted people, who made a thankless task a real pleasure.” Pictured is the SGN team, with East Clayton Farm Development Manager Jean Rolfe (back, 2nd left), taking a well-earned break. One member of the team, Chris Rose, still sports pink hair after dying it in October to raise funds for the charity Breast Cancer Now.

Gazebos great as BilliFest back in High Street again Silver Award for Shelley School
The Billifest is back in Billingshurst High Street on December 3 after ten years. Announcing the news Billingshurst Community Partnership’s Organizing Committee Chair Ken Johnson, said: “On December 3 Billingshurst High Street will be home for our BilliFest Family Fun Day and Christmas Fayre. This is great news and the move is fully supported by our High Street retailers whose shop fronts face the street, so tey too can become very much involved in the festivities”. Gazebos introduced last year will again be featured as they proved popular. Just that section will be closed to traffic. allowing access to the Jengers Mead carpark and shops from the north. It will be the perfect place to buy Christmas presents”. “BilliFest would not be BilliFest without lots of family entertainment and the annual raffle thanks to local donors. Guides get a memory to keep Ready to plant
Youngsters from Billingshurst were among members of the Guide section from Girlguiding West Sussex who enjoyed a sleepover with a difference. The Guides were invited to spend a night in the keep at historic Arundel Castle to thank them for their efforts in helping the gardens team plant its spring bulbs. The gardens will welcome larger displays in the New Year than seen before at Arundel Castle, with more than 86,000 blooms planted, including a record 36,000 tulips which will form its Annual Tulip Festival. The flowers are expected to blossom in time for the castle’s
reopening on April 1 meaning that visitors will be greeted by a dazzling array of colours and floral scents. This year is the fourth time that the Guides have contributed to the planting efforts at the castle, a task which helps towards the completion of their Baden Powell Challenge Award, which is the highest award in the Guide section of Girlguiding. Guide Leader Gillian Almond said: “Arundel Castle is a fabulous and memorable venue for the girls participating in the Baden Powell Challenge. It is fantastic to be able to support them on their journey and be part of their infectious enthusiasm for guiding.” The
Billingshurst girls were joined by colleagues from Plaistow, Ifold, Worthing and Arundel. Head Gardener Martin Duncan said: “It is so rewarding to see young people taking an interest in our gardens and learning skills that can benefit their gardens at home! “We look forward to welcoming the Guides each year, they are a real credit to their unit. The hard work that goes into planting our bulbs in the winter is returned ten-fold when the beautiful flowers blossom in the spring. We look forward to inviting the girls back next year to see the fruits of their labour.”

Frustration over planning decision A parish council has spoken of its frustration about the latest approved scheme for a care centre at Broadbridge Heath. An application for a 70-bed care home, eight extra care apartments, and three extra care bungalows has been agreed by Horsham district councillors. It follows the approval of 165 homes and allotments earlier this year at a site near the Old Guildford Road. Geoff Clark, chairman of the planning committee of Broadbridge Heath Parish Council, told the Post: “The Parish Council were disapextremely pointed and frustrated that the HDC Planning Committee did not require more scrutiny and challenge of the revised proposals, taking into account the significant changes from the plans approved under appeal by Gleeson Homes. With Broadbridge Heath having taken so much development in recent years, it might appear that when an application such as this is put forward it is now seen as being just “more of the same” development for the village.”
Broadbridge Heath Parish Council objected to the application, which it said was for a larger development than that permitted under the original outline application. It told the district planners that the number of beds supported had increased by 56% from 60 to a total of 96 in the main care home plus extra supported apartments and new bungalows. It described the proposed buildings as larger, overbearing and imposing and out of keeping in a rural environment. The parish council also said: “This over development means that the number of car parking spaces is restricted, which is recognised by the developers who propose a parking management scheme to overcome this deficiency during busy periods. “There are concerns regarding the safety of the entrances into and out of the site from and onto the Old Guildford Road, especially with the potential for parking to overspill from the site onto this road.”

Outstanding attitude earned hardworking students their bursaries. Collyer’s presented bursaries to nine new students, in recognition of their outstanding results at school. Bursaries were awarded to a student from each of the key local partner schools and to students achieving top grades from schools north, south, east and west of Horsham. Students presented with a cheque were Oliver Charman from Angmering, Elena Davis from Millais, Jack Gower from Warden Park, Helena Overton-Smith from Towers,
Richard Potter from Forest, Emma Simmons from Tanbridge House, Patrick Slazak from Hazelwick, Adam Taylor from Oriel and Amiella Venturini from Tanbridge House) Principal, Sally Bromley said: “It is important that Collyer’s recognise the outstanding work of our excellent partner schools, by rewarding some of our new students for their academic success in year 11. We attract students from right across the region, so it is fitting that we should also reward those coming to us from farther afield. I’m sure the money will be
put to good use to help support their education or extra-curricular activities while at Collyer’s.” Ellie Davis summed up the students delight and said: “The whole process of GCSEs, and the time spent on revision in the lead up to them, was exhausting, but ultimately worth it.” Pictured by student photographer Chloe Chamberlain are Oliver Charman, Jack Gower, Adam Taylor, Ellie Davies; Richard Potter, Emma Simmons, Amiella Venturini, principal Sally Bromley, Helena Overton-Smith and Patryk Slazak

Drama students made one youngster’s dreams come true when they supported the charity ‘Act for Change Project’. The charity campaigns for diversity in the arts, promoting a better and fairer representation and overcoming social barriers such as race, gender, class, sexuality, age or disability. It has support from celebrities, activ-
ists and politicians, including the likes of Stephen Fry, Jack Whitehall and Lenny Henry. Musical Director and student Lizzie Britton said: “As a woman, it’s especially hard to find myself represented in truly strong, unstereotyped roles, so seeing this show come together with great efforts and minds really has been a dream come true.”
mined by your race, sexual orientation, class, gender or other factors.” The show undertook a range of performances, some more famous than others, but all with a twist on the original to promote the inclusive message. This included an interesting take on a Shakespeare classic: Midsummer Night’s Dream, in which four girls were cast to promote positive representations of lesbians. The performances of all the students and Subject Leader for Drama expressed both raw emotion and humour. Pictured are Jess Wickens, Clare Packham and Elizabeth Britton. Pic: Chloe Chamberlain
A group of girls from Farlington School’s Years 10 and 11 have “fantastico” memories after being introduced to Spanish culture and history. They flew to Madrid for four days of immersing themselves in Spanish life, to experience everyday life in a Spanish city while improving their linguistic skills. From the moment they landed at Madrid airport the rule was ‘sólo español’; only Spanish spoken here. That included ordering food in Spanish at a restaurant as the waiter did not understand

much English. At the Prado Museum they traced the history of painting from the early renaissance to the 18 th century, encompassing paintings by the great Spanish artists Velazquez and Goya. Entering the historic city of Toledo via the Puente de San Martin, they were transported back to mediaeval Spain, walking winding cobbled streets and visiting the magnificent Cathedral, the El Greco Museum and the El Transito Synagogue, and the girls found time to try some traditional Spanish food, including delicious ‘churros’. At La Plaza Monumental de Las Ventas in Madrid they had a tour of the city’s bullring, with a lot of activity as the final bullfight of the season was due to take place that afternoon. Among the highlights was a visit to one of the oldest flamenco venues in the capital, Tablao Villa Rosa, emblematic of 1920’s Madrid with its picturesque Andalusian wall tiles. Here the girls enjoyed a delicious dinner of tapas and paella and were treated to a spectacular display of traditional flamenco byinternationallyrenowned dancers and singers. Undeterred by rain on the final day, the girls spentthe morning looking around the magnificent Palacio Real, considered by many to be one of the finest palaces in Europe.

Early birds capture win
An early start proved a winner for youngsters competing in a national contest. Farlington school’s team travelled to the National Schools Equestrian Association finals at Addington and came away with a first and an individual second. It was a fairly early start at 7.40am for riders to walk the course for the Novice Jumping with Style competition. The riders picked their lines to

obtain a good speed around the cross country phase and, after watching a few competitors, they used the next five minute course walk to slightly revise and confirm the routes to take. The careful preparation paid off as the team of Suzie Lunt, Lucia Mayhew, Millie Bubb and Clarissa Burnell-achieved first place with clear rounds and high style marks. They had won the class by a clear 15 marks, a
considerable achievement. In addition, Millie Bubb took an individual second place. The event was run over four days with schools having qualified to compete from all over the country. In the Mini team jumping Roseanna Savage, Suzie Lunt, Lucia Mayhew and Millie Bubb all completed good rounds with Suzie and Millie clear but being out of the top eight did not make the final. In the Mini Jumping with Style the team competed in style against 33 other teams plus individuals and were 11th. Ella Heron had qualified during the year at British Eventing competitions for NSEA/BE Points League 201. Ella competed in the 90cm section. In the dressage section Ella and Floyd achieved an excellent score of 75%. Suzie Lunt riding Rushmoor Master William (Billie) had qualified as an individual for the Novice show jumping, her last outing on this special pony. They completed a brilliant clear round in a very good time, so a great way to finish the day, together with Ella Heron collecting her 4th place medal and rosette for the event class.
Online revolution on offer at GP surgeries Patients registered at GP surgeries in Sussex and Surrey are benefiting from the online revolution, claim NHS bosses. More are taking up the opportunity to book appointments with their doctor or request a repeat prescription over the internet or on a smartphone. The GP online service is free and available online via a website. Smartphone and tablet users can also download an app to give them access on their phones. Users of the service can also read their own GP records, including information about medication, allergies, vaccinations and test results. Sussex GP Dr Tim Caroe said: “Many of our patients tell us that they value the convenience of making an appointment at any time of the day or night, or requesting a repeat prescription without having to visit the surgery. By freeing up the phone
lines, they also make it easier for patients who don’t want to use GP online services to get through by phone.” Dr Caroe, who is a GP, added: “Having access to their GP records also means that people are more in control of their health and well-being. This is particularly helpful for people who are living with a long-term health condition such as diabetes that needs regular checking and frequent prescriptions.” The NHS stresses that GP online services make use of secure computer systems. People can only see their own information, but they can make arrangements with their local surgery for family members or carers to access their records. You can register for GP online services by visiting your GP surgery, or find out more on the NHS Choices website at www.nhs.uk/ GPonlineservices

Bax Castle wins prestigious National Family Friendly Pub of the Year Award
There were celebrations all round in Horsham, as the Bax Castle won the prestigious Marston’s Family Friendly Pub of the Year award 2016.* The title (which has been recieved once before by the pub) was awarded by Warwick Congrave, Finance Systems Manager at Marston’s PLC. Warwick noted that the ‘family pub really put a focus on family’, always ensuring that not only the children were catered for, but that also the adults could have an enjoyable and relaxing meal out too. Warwick added: “As the father of three small children, it’s rare that my wife and I are able to sit through a meal in peace; however,

Bax Castle was something truly different. The pub’s vibrantly coloured picnic benches and large play area - that included a bouncy castle slide - were all safely fenced off, allowing our little explorers free to go off and explore. I have been to a lot of family pubs before, but in Bax Castle, I have found one that truly puts family first.” “For me, it has always been about being able to cater for families and ensuring that everyone can have an enjoyable and relaxing time,” said David Stevens, who runs the pub, “The award is the icing on the cake for the pub and, for me and my staff, it’s truly amazing to get that recognition,
knowing that we are running our pub in the best way possible for our customers.” Bax Castle offers a comfortable and inviting retreat for families, with plenty of room and facilities for children. Friendly service is the driving force for the pub and ensures that customers return time and time again. The Pub of the Year awards is open to the entire Marston’s Taverns and Leased estate of over 1,400 pubs across the country, to acknowledge and reward excellence. For more information on the Bax Castle, please call 01403 730369 or visit www.baxcastle. co.uk.
PMW chosen as finalist in CMA Awards PMW Communications Ltd, a full service marketing agency based in West Sussex, has been announced as a finalist in the prestigious Construction Marketing Awards (CMA). The awards recognise marketing excellence across the construction industry, to showcase creativity, innovation and effectiveness in marketing. PMW entered the ‘Best use of press and public relations’ category with its 2015 Help for Hospices campaign. The charity campaign was created and run for the company’s longstanding client, Covers Timber & Builders Merchants, which has 13 branches across the South East. The campaign ran for one week in September, last year, and aimed to raise £21,000 on
behalf of 11 separate hospice charities across the South East. In total, Covers exceeded expectations, raising a whopping £27,000 and PMW generated 44 pieces of positive media coverage in association with the event. Due to the incredible success of the campaign, PMW is running the campaign again for 2016 and aims to raise even more for these vital causes. Harriette Conroy, Senior PR Manager at PMW, commented: “The campaign has been so successful with incredible results for both Covers and for the hospices that have benefitted from the fundraising. The team are very excited to have been announced as finalists in the CMA awards. We are keeping our fingers and toes crossed for the award ceremony next month!”
Horsham Life Coach looking to make positive changes
With a background in Human Resources and small business development, Mariki Troskie is a trained Life Coach and experienced public speaker and offers a broad range of individual and business coaching services. “I believe that everyone has the ability to achieve their dreams, no matter how big or how small”, Troskie explained, “Our busy lifestyles place more pressure on us than ever before and sometimes it feels like the rewards are getting slimmer. There is another way”. Mariki trained as a Life Coach after a sudden change in personal circumstances, several years ago, left her lacking in hope for the future: “I realised that I needed some help to develop a new picture of what my life could be and found an amazing Life Coach who helped me turn it around. Since then, I’ve made it my mission to help others develop the resources to live a more fulfilled life”.
Life Coaching is a practical, professional relationship which will help you to take stock of where you are now, where you want to be and how you can get there. As your Life Coach, Mariki will set you goals and hold you accountable, so that you make real, measurable progress. Life Coaching is available both on an individual basis and as group workshops. The group workshops for adults encompass a four-week training programme, covering health, career, relationships and well-being. The next course starts in January - enabling you to get your 2017 off to the best possible start. Mariki also offers Life Coaching for children, such as a five-week programme to help your child gain greater confidence, deal with bullying, develop relationships and build life skills. Mariki, who works with a wide
variety of clients from teenagers through to retirees, added: “It can be a daunting prospect to change your life. Knowing that you’re not alone and have a Life Coach who will guide and support you, every step of the way, can make the biggest difference. “Using my background in Human Resources, as well as extensive training and experience as a Life Coach, I hope to help you write that novel, make that career change, go on the adventure you’ve always dreamed of or simply derive more joy from everyday challenges.” For more information, please visit www.marikitroskie.com, email info@marikitroskie.com, or you can listen to a recent interview at: https://www.mixcloud. com/BusinessRadio/great-interview-with-the-lovely-lifecoach-mariki-troskie/

A very special guest is arriving at the Weald & Downland Open Air Museum in Singleton, near Chichester, next month. Organisers are inviting visitors to come and meet Green Father Christmas at the Museum on the weekends of 3-4, 10-11 and 17-18 December, for a magical Christmas treat! Green Father Christmas (or Old Winter) was originally part of an old English midwinter festival – usually dressed in green he was a sign of the returning spring. At the event, every child can spend time with Green Father Christmas, seated in his decorated chamber, before receiving a traditional wooden toy (or soft toy for 0-3 year-olds) wrapped in brown paper and string. There will be plenty of opportunities to take photos, and each guest can enjoy a hot drink and a mince pie whilst waiting. Meetings with Green Father Christmas are by appointment
only and tickets must be purchased in advance. Tickets are £10 per child (including a toy) and all children must be accompanied by an adult. Accompanying adult tickets (maximum two per meeting) are available for £5 each (free for Annual Members) and include full entrance to the Museum. To book, please visit the mseum’s website at www.wealddown.co.uk/ shop. Regular Museum admission prices apply to additional accompanying visitors. Those with access requirements are advised to call the Museum on 01243 811363 or email office@wealddown.co.uk prior to booking. Opening times and further information can be found at www. wealddown.co.uk. The Museum is open from 10.30am to 4pm at weekends throughout December (closed 24 - 25 December) and open for ‘Christmas at the Museum’ on Boxing Day and Tuesday 27 December. Dogs on leads are welcome.

Kidenza, a series of classical concerts for kids, is bringing a Christmas spectacular to Christ’s Hospital School Theatre on the 17th December. The concert is set to be the best yet and is sure to get little ones into the festive spirit. Fusing two Christmas classics with magical appeal - Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker and Disney’s Frozen - the show, titled ‘The Frozen Nutcracker’ will prove to be a visual and musical feast. A live ballet performance, fea-
turing two West End performers, accompanied by an orchestra of young world-class musicians, will make this Kidenza concert one not to be missed. Claire Lambert, managing director and founder of Kidenza explained: “Our aim is always to inspire little minds and harness their natural curiosity. Having just finished our hugely successful South East of England tour, with Carnival of the Animals, we will be bringing our unique brand of entertainment to little ones this
Christmas, to leave them aweinspired. Both the Nutcracker and the music from Frozen are guaranteed to spread the magic of Christmas, melt hearts and leave a rosy glow this Christmas.” Performance: 17 December at 2pm. Tickets: £12 (under 2s, free) are available from www.kidenza. co.uk. The show, which lasts approx. 70 minutes, is designed to appeal to babies, toddlers and primary school aged children.
Fez-tive magic and laughs as West End star Daniel Taylor brings comedy legend Tommy Cooper to life
Following a string of successful performances throughout 2015 and 2016, The Tommy Cooper Show brings some Christmas cheer to Crawley this December - Just like that! Joined by a superb supporting cast, Blood Brothers and West End star, Daniel Taylor, embodies the comedy icon, complete with Tommy’s distinct brand of magic and dazzling wordplay. The show evokes nostalgia for Christmas entertainment of the past and delights audiences of all ages, celebrating the life of the man who could prompt laughter by simply entering a room. The show comes to Crawley for the first time, but
audiences may recognise Daniel Taylor from Lennon: Through A Glass Onion, which enjoyed an evening at the Hawth Theatre in September. Having recently completed a tour of UK and Ireland, playing the iconic John Lennon, Daniel Taylor is familiar with the challenges of resurrecting much-loved legends of entertainment. Taylor is supported by Gareth Jones, the presenter formerly known as ‘Gaz Top’ (Gareth Jones on Speed, How 2, Get Fresh) as Cooper’s long suffering manager, Miff Ferrie, and Sharon Byatt (My Kingdom, Bread, Coronation Street) as Cooper’s wife, Gwen Henty.
Written by Ian Carroll and Daniel Taylor, originally conceived as a show for the Christmas period, The Tommy Cooper Show takes us on a journey, from Tommy’s days in the army, right up to the height of his national TV stardom. The show - a celebration of what made Tommy a national treasure recieved the blessing of Tommy’s estate, and his daughter Vicky. Daniel Taylor (Actor, Writer and Producer) commented: “Tommy Cooper was given that wonderful and rare gift to make people laugh, even if it was just by standing there. His comedy was innocent and appealed to all ages. His jokes will stand the test of time and will last for generations to come, as has been proven by the audience reaction to our show. He was also an incredible magician, who worked tirelessly at his craft, especially when he purposely made the tricks go wrong. “With regard to my interpretation, it happens ‘Just like that!’ I simply aim to bring him back to life. The innocence, mania, look, and, of course, that infectious laugh of his. There will simply be no entertainer like him again.’ Performance: Fri 16 and Sat 17 December 2016, 7.30pm, The Hawth Studio. Tickets, priced £17.50 (discounts £16.50), are available from The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 or by visiting hawth.co.uk

Double achievement for @Home Estates of fresh air in the estate agent world in our opinion, we are lucky to have such a great new company in our area and would not hesitate to recommend them.” Director, Paul Davies, who’s fast becoming known for his broad smile, responded to the news and explained why he thinks @Home’s is such a success: “There was a need in estate agency for an agent who could
At Home Estates are a breath of fresh air in the estate agent world in our opinion, we are lucky to have such a great new company in our area... @Home Estates are celebrating yet another success, having just won Estate Agent of the Year 2016 for Southwater and Estate Agent of the Year 2016 for the RH13 region. The awards were announced by allAgents (the UK’s largest customer review website for the property industry) and are part of the UK’s largest customer award scheme for agents and people working within the property industry. The awards are based entirely on feedback from clients rating and sharing their customer service experiences, and reviews posted during the period and 1st September 2015 to 31st August 2016.
@Home’s success is all the more remarkable given that they only launched in September 2015 and it’s fair to say they’re taking their local property market by storm. Earlier this year, @Home were finalists in the Business Matters awards, for Best Start Up and Best Customer Service, and have more 5* All Agent and Google Plus reviews than all their local competitors have achieved over the last 3 years. In September this year, as a result of their success, the company outgrew their existing premises and moved into Lintot Square in Southwater. One of the many reviews, which lead to @Home’s award, read: “Paul immediately put us
at ease during our first meeting … He is very knowledgeable, efficient and confident, but also warm and friendly. @Home Estates made a great job of marketing and selling our home (we sold after 1 viewing for full asking price) … Paul and his team followed our sale throughout, keeping their eye on the ball and always doing everything they could to help with issues out of our control. Paul is a great communicator and really cares rather than just getting you tied in to a deal. Great value for money, great mortgage advice, solicitor and insurance recommendations too – we used every service provided and all have been brilliant. “At Home Estates are a breath
offer the flexibility, exposure and affordability of the online portals, combined with the personal service and local knowledge of a high street. It’s a new kind of estate agency. We charge just 0.75% for a sale even for our premium package and make sure you have professional photos. We financially qualify all applicants to ensure no time wasters, manage viewings around you and your life and we have an amazing after sale service.” Paul is also not only a mortgage broker (adding yet another dimension to @Home) but also passionate about his community and donated £1,000 to a local school, earlier in this year, from his first sale.

Horsham Colts replace Pulborough at top Sussex RFU Youth League - Colts Premier Pulborough Colts 12 – 21 Horsham Rugby Dave Snith - Sports Editor Horsham beat Pulborough in a top of the table Sussex Colts Premier League match and in doing so replaced their hosts as league leaders. Horsham kicked off into the strong wind and nearly scored in
the opening minutes after a Matt Allen tackle gave them a scoring chance. Horsham continued to press forward but the strong Pulborough defence stood firm until midway through the half when Prop Eddie Grogan went over from close range and Joe Blake completed a successful conversion. Pulborough soon replied with a try in the corner that went unconverted. Horsham responded with a penalty into the corner that resulted in the Horsham pack driving over the line from where
Horsham Colts took top spot off Pulborough
Hayden Brock grounded the ball for a try, converted by Blake, for a half time score of 14-5 to Horsham. After the restart Horsham extended their lead with an excellent solo try from Max Patterson that was again converted by Blake. With 10 minutes remaining Pulborough scored with a similarly excellent try running the ball in from 75 yards under the posts that was converted to complete the scoring and leave Horsham with a hard fought win.”

Horsham overcome the weather to beat Heathfield Horsham’s Jordan Bell
London 2 South East Horsham 17 - 3 Heathfield & Waldron Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham consolidated their sixth in the table position with a
committed, strongly fought win, scoring two tries and keeping the visitors at bay. Handling and kicking was hampered by some lengthy wintry showers, but Heathfield & Waldron went ahead with a penalty after voided attacks. Then, Horsham won a lineout, sending
Junior Football Round Up
Horsham Sparrows U13 team Horsham Sparrows U12 – Playing against Southwater Sparrows were 1-0 down at halftime but came back with a superb second half performance scoring 3 goals to win 3-1. Man of the match was shared by Sam L in attack and Max V for some match winning saves. Horsham Sparrows U13 – Sparrows were in control in the opening stages against Brockham Badgers White and deservedly took the lead as Gusztav latched onto a quick throw from Ollie. Brockham came back strongly and scored three times before the break. Troy’s long range effort gave Sparrows hope but Brockham scored twice more as Sparrows chased the game. MoM: Troy. Horsham Sparrows U16 – Sparrows hosted unbeaten Brockham Whites and conceded 2 early goals in the first half but then fought back with goals from Harry B and
Josh to make it even at the break. Brockham took the lead again and Sparrows levelled again with a goal from Sam. ‘Keeper Tim made a good save in the dying minutes but an extra time winner from Brockam gave them the points – MoM: Jordan Horsham Sparrows U13 Girls – Another good performance from the girls in gale force winds saw them win 9-1 and advance to the cup semi-final. Lilymae scored 4 goals, Freya 3, Issy and Alice who scored the teams 100th goal since forming 18 months ago. Chesworth Rovers U13 2 - 1 Cranleigh Casuals U13 League action saw Chesworth Rovers looking to make up for the away loss earlier in the season. Early on Cranleigh were pegged back as Toby Shepheard smashed the ball against the cross bar, shortly followed by a Josh Hayes
the ball wide for George Palmer to cross the line, converted by returning skipper Tom Johnson. The referee intervened to quell an uprising before Horsham went further ahead with another Johnson penalty, following which the Horsham defence negated a Heathfield drive ahead of repeated home forays. Horsham led 10-3 at the break and the second half began with further excessive exuberance, resulting in a Horsham sin binning reducing them to 14 men, Heathfield failing to capitalise on their numerical advantage as Horsham defenders continued to deny them. The defining moment came half way through the second session when Horsham again moved the ball wide, this time on the left, for Jordan Bell to score a try in the corner, nonchalantly converted by Johnson. The game ended with gathering gloom restricting visibility - although the referee saw enough to red card a Heathfield player, there was no further addition to the scoreline, despite pressure at each end. Post match the Heathfield & Waldron officials paid tribute to the facilities and Horsham’s well deserved victory. Horsham have a demanding away trip to current runners up Old Colfeians tomorrow, Saturday. The south east Londoners beat Old Alleynians 63-14 last week. effort that hit the same spot. Cranleigh broke the deadlock chipping the ball over Leo for 1-0. Tom Miller came on as a sub and smashed a cross ball into the net to equalise. The second half was end to end and Harry Sutton struck the winner for Chesworth to seal the points. Cranleigh Youth U16 1 - 1 Chesworth Rovers U16 Cranleigh and Chesworth shared their fourth 1-1 draw in five meetings in the last two seasons, proving again that there is nothing between these two excellent teams. This time it was Chesworth who scored first while Cranleigh, who beat Rovers in a play-off penalty shootout to win last season’s title, left it until seven minutes from the end to score the equaliser. Cranleigh started best but Rovers took the lead through last season’s league top scorer Michael Murray’s close-range effort. The second half was tight and both teams had chances but Cranleigh’s Lucas Watkins late in the half turned on the 18-yard line and fired into the bottom corner of the net. Lancing Rangers U18 0 – 3 Roffey U18 Roffey made hard work of this league fixture against 10-man Lancing Rangers. The first goal came just before the break when Dom Glossop finally manged to put the ball in the net. Nick Cranston headed home Ben Gibbs’ corner for the second, and the third was calmly placed past the Lancing keeper by Josh Kennedy. This result now puts Roffey 3 points clear at the top of the table.

Pulborough remain top despite unaccustomed defeat London 3 South East Pulborough 13 - 19 Thanet Wanderers Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Pulborough had won all eight of their previous games this season and remain top by three points despite coming unstuck against nearest contenders Thanet Wanderers. Frazer Oliphant-Hope kicked an early penalty before Thanet Wanderers drew level with a place kick of their own and then burst through to get over the line in a breakaway strike, which they converted. A prolonged period of midfield play ensued until, following Thanet pressure, they slotted home a penalty to give them a ten point advantage at the break. Boro responded with two early attacks and were rewarded with a Barney Reed push over try, kicked
over by Frazer to narrow the score to 10-13, but Thanet immediately replied with a long range penalty, only for Boro to do the same, before Thanet converted another set piece. Both sides then missed penalties and, although the wet conditions would normally have mitigated against accurate handling, fewer than expected errors were made until Boro crucially dropped the ball at close range. Late Boro attacks proved fruitless, the game ending in dank gloom with Boro shaded 13-19. Boro President Alex Steele told the District Post: “We’ve built up great team spirit and plenty of self-belief and have been remarkably consistent. We’ve picked up a few injuries and this game was a big test, but there’s no shame in losing to Thanet – they’re a good side.” Pulborough are back on the road tomorrow (Saturday) with a long away trip to Folkestone. The Kent side are fifth after losing to Gillingham Anchorians last week.

Storm Angus blows out Brighton 10k Athletics Dave Smith - Sports Editor Hundreds of frustrated runners were left standing around on a wet and windy seafront last weekend as one of the seasons feature races, the Brooks Brighton 10K, was cancelled at the last minute. A number of issues caused by the extreme weather conditions brought in by storm Angus were to blame. One of the main roads used, the A259, could not be closed to traffic, the temporary toilet facilities could not be lifted on to the seafront and flying debris and shingle were considHJ runners in the Valencian sun
ered a major injury risk. Organiser’s state that they were caught by surprise as the forecasted wind speed of 45mph proved to be an underestimate with gusts reaching 97mph. A statement is expected soon to clarify if the race will be rescheduled or cancelled completely this year. Meanwhile three other local runners experienced much better conditions as they opted for the Valencia 10k in preference to Brighton. Horsham Joggers’ Sharon Burchett set a 10k PB of 55.03, Saul Brignall also ran a PB of 3.56.34 and Tashy Heasman finished in 4.26.15.

Stunning Horsham display topples league leaders Atlantis swimmers in Schools Relay Finals Louisa Denman scored twice for Horsham
South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division 1 Horsham Ladies 4 - 1 Surbiton Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham played out of their skins, moving up to seventh, walloping hitherto unbeaten league leaders Surbiton, who had only conceded four goals in
their previous eight games this season. Team Manager Jane Denman told the District Post: “I couldn’t possibly have asked for more we really clicked as a team and everybody played so well!” Louisa Denman’s early goal set out Horsham’s stall and although Surbiton equalised, that was as good as it got for them, Alicia Remfry soon restoring Horsham’s lead,
giving Surbiton plenty to think about during the break - Gee Humphreys saying: “We went out with the mentality of giving them a tough game and really challenging.” That approach shone through, Elle Blakesley converting a second half short corner to provide a 3-1 cushion before Louisa Denman put the icing on the cake with her second open play goal, Gee adding: “ Surbiton looked a bit tired towards the end of the first half but they came at us hard on the resumption. We managed to maintain our dominance, though.” Ladies’ Captain Charlotte (CJ) White said: “We’ve been pushing Louisa up front and it certainly paid off!” Horsham’s important win leaves them on 10 points, giving them a two point advantage over eighth club Oxford University and four over Staines. Woking remains rooted to the foot of the table, yet to break their duck. Tomorrow, Saturday, the ladies are at home again with their last league game before their Christmas and New Year break in another tough match – against Barnes, who leapfrogged Surbiton into top spot after beating Oxford University last week.
Swimming The finals of the English Secondary Schools National Relay Championships (ESSA) took place at the London Aquatic Centre, and 10 Atlantis Swimmers, representing two local secondary schools, Millais and Rydon, and 1 sixth form college, Collyers, were competing. To qualify for the finals, secondary schools from all over the country had previously competed in county and regional galas with the top 30 schools making it through to the 4x50m medley relay and the 4x50m freestyle relay finals at the Olympic venue. The three teams were accompanied by Atlantis Coach Becky Harrison. The morning’s heats resulted in the 30 competing schools reduced to the top 10 finalists for the 2 events in each age category. Millais’s Junior Year 8 swimmers, Emma Harrison, Jessica Glassford, Emma Morris, Anna Templar and Millie Weeden put in a thrilling performance to finish in a fantastic 9th place overall in the country.
The girls also gave it their all in the 4x50 Medley heats, narrowly missing out on a place in the top 10 final by 19 100ths of a second. Rydon’s Junior Year 7 girls, Amber Ranson, Olivia Round Pitman, Skye Cooke and Amelia Stone after some excellent swimming in the freestyle medley placed them in 21st position overall in their age category. Collyer’s also had success with their senior boys’ team of Aidan Sparling, Martin Schofield and brothers George and Charlie Hopkins delivered a strong performance to storm through the heats into the final 10 in both events. Two tight final races saw the quartet finish in an excellent 8th position overall in both the Freestyle and Medley Finals. Coach Becky Harrison said of the day, “Huge congratulations to all the swimmers who competed, it’s an amazing achievement to swim in national competition against the likes of Millfield, Plymouth and Mount Kelly. They all rose to the occasion and swam their hearts out.”

Hawks winning run comes to an end Hawks winning run ended
Good point for Heath at windswept Worthing SCFL Premier Division Worthing United 2 - 2 Broadbridge Heath Football Andy Crisp - BBHFC
Horsham Hawks U16 68 - 38 Crawley Cagers U16 Junior Basketball Dave Snith - Sports Editor Following 3 successive victories, Hawks U16 team’s winning run came to an end against Sussex Champions Crawley Cagers. For much of the first period Hawks outplayed the reining league champions limiting the visitors from Crawley to 7 points in the opening 6 minutes. Offensively Hawks were equally impressive with terrific transition managing to regularly beat the Cagers press and move the ball at pace creating opportunities at
will with Kieran Lee, Ollie Hutt, Josh Raby and James Maclean all contributing early on. Late in the quarter the Cagers strength in depth finally began to tell as Hawks began to tire and Cagers took a 19-12 lead into the second period. The momentum stayed with the visitors in the opening stages of Q2 playing some lovely basketball but Hawks regained some of their early impetus by putting in a strong display to get the scoreboard ticking over again as George Makin and Jamie Miller found their range before Lee closed the half with a superb 3 for a half time score of 38-22 to Cagers. Q3 started well for Hawks with a
6-2 run before lapses in concentration allowed Cagers to have a run of their own. David Farr was introduced to add some physical presence at both ends of the court and this certainly worked at the beginning of the final period with the Horsham team restricting Cagers to 5 points in the first 8 minutes. At the other end Morgan Hamilton executed an exquisite mid-range jumper while Maclean and Makin added to their tallies together with Lee who sank another 3. Although the game ended in defeat the final score line of 68-38 did not reflect the outstanding effort and commitment from the Hawks squad.
It is never the best time to play a team when they have just replaced their manager but that’s just what the Heath players had to do with United player’s out to impress new boss Simon Funnell. The hosts started well and took an early lead on 5 minutes when the ball was played into the path of Frank Foster who hit a low shot from 20 yards that flew off the wet surface past the diving Michael Chester. The game flowed from end with both sides creating further chances the best of which was when Dean Wright got behind the right side of the United defence and pulled the ball back to Jake Holmes who hit it first time from 12 yards straight into the arms of Fraser Trigwell the United keeper. The equalizer came 10 minutes before the break, Heath were awarded a free-kick wide on the right and 35 yards from goal, Scott Weller floated the ball to the far post where a posse of Heath players attempted to make contact but despite valiant
efforts they all failed to connect and the ball went straight into the net, 1-1 at the break. Conditions deteriorated dramatically in the second period, high winds, torrential rain and players losing their footing in the wet conditions but despite that both sets of players put in an entertaining performance for the supporters. Chester made a good save low to his right to deny Adrian Todd and Trigwell did similar at the other end to prevent Jamal Sultan from scoring but with just minutes remaining, Jamie Robinson advanced down the left and crossed to Jake Holmes who found space six yards from goal and turned the ball past Trigwell for what seemed to be a late winner. They say teams are most vulnerable when they’ve just scored and that was certainly the case when within a minute of the restart the hosts were level when Matthew Hards received the ball 12 yards from goal, his powerful shot was parried by Chester on the goal line but in the wet conditions the ball squirmed out of his grasp and over the line. So Heath had to settle for a draw, their first drew of the season and on the balance of play in atrocious conditions a fair result.

Thumping home defeat leaves YM adrift of leaders Thumping home defeat leaves YM adrift of leaders SCFL Premier Division Horsham YMCA 1 – 4 Newhaven Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor

Going into the match, historically Newhaven have never had much joy against YM, especially at Gorings Mead. But this resounding thumping even at this early stage, about puts paid to any hopes YM had of promotion for this season with the leaders Shoreham now having scored 18 points more than them. The match could not have got off to a worse start with YM coming under immediate pressure from the kick off having twice to block efforts on goal from Lee Robinson and Scott Taylor before Elliot Wood beat ‘keeper Sam Smith to make it 1-0 with barely 40 seconds played. YM just never got going and in the 10th minute Dean Carden was slightly fortunate not to receive a red card when he tugged back Elliot as he was about to shot at goal giving the referee no option but to award a penalty and show Carden yellow. Scott Taylor stepped up and blasted the penalty kick passed
Smith for 2-0. Despite being second best for most of the half 5 minutes before the break YM gave themselves a lifeline when Brad Curtis tapped in after he was left in acres of space from a corner. If only YM could have took the one goal deficit into the second half then there may have been hope of getting something from the match but on the stroke of half time some sloppy marking allowed Ryan Knight to head into the corner of the net. The second half saw YM at least having a go and the visitors were pinned back in their own half for long periods although their resolute defence coped fairly comfortably with all YM threw at them. The match was finally killed off as a contest in the 70th minute when Newhaven ‘keeper Jake Buss hit a long clearance that was headed on to the prolific Robinson who headed home his 30th goal of the season. YM’s frustrations boiled over as referee David Philp blew the final whistle with Carden being shown a second yellow for foul and abusive language. YM will need to play a lot better than this tomorrow (Saturday November 26) when they visit third place Haywards Heath Town if they are to avoid another defeat.
Horsham slide with barren display Horsham slide with barren display South League – Premier – Division 1 Old Cranleighans 3 - 0 Horsham
Ryman League Division One South Corinthian-Casuals 2 – 1 Horsham Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor Although this was far better than the thrashing handed out to Horsham in their previous match, they once again came away with nothing. However, unlike against Dorking Wanderers, this time the Hornets deserved at least a point from a close fought contest. It took a strike from Casuals goal machine Jamie Byatt 7 minutes from time to deny Horsham a draw after Tom Lawley’s second half goal had cancelled out Josh Ozun’s opener on the stroke of half time. Three new Horsham arrivals were on the bench with the latest, Matt Axell from Worthing, joining Reece Batchelor from East Grinstead and Tiago An-
drade from Broadbridge Heath. Disappointingly however one of the Horsham stars this season, Liam MacDevitt, was playing his last match for the club as he is joining league rivals Greenwich Borough. The match started slowly with neither side creating anything that could be considered a good chance, although Casuals had a little better of the play and a bit more of the possession. As the half progressed the home side began to create some openings with Jordan Clarke and Josh Gallagher both testing Pelling in the Horsham goal. Midway through the half a good ball into the area from Lee Carney just evaded the outstretched boot of MacDevitt and at the other end Shaun Okojie hit an effort against the cross bar when he perhaps should have done better. However, the miss was made up for in the last minute of the half when Ozun hit a first time shot past Pelling to give his side the advantage at
the break. Horsham came out looking livelier and Lewis Hyde had an early second half effort well saved by ‘keeper Danny Bracken with MacDevitt just failing to get on the rebound. Casuals though went all out for a second goal with Terry Murray heading just over and Clark trying to do too much when he had a clear chance to shoot at goal. Horsham buoyed by the missed chances then got back into the match with a superb individual goal in the 64th minute. Lawley collected the ball on the half way line and his pace left the home defence in his wake before he smashed the ball past Bracken for 1-1. The next 20 minutes saw the defences back on top but then as the game looked destined to play out to a draw the home side sealed the three points when substitute Byatt lashed Ozun’s cross low past Pelling to send Horsham home with nothing.
Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporte Horsham’s fourth consecutive loss sees them drop to penultimate spot in the table, 11th, after their very promising early season form deserted them at their highest ever league level. Trailing two nil at the break as a result of a breakaway following disappointment at not being awarded a short corner, then a disputed penalty, Horsham were nevertheless still in the game, but their inability to score goals came back to haunt them – only one team in the league has netted less than Horsham’s 14. In the second half Old Cranleighans found the goal again from another breakaway. Team Manager Al Campbell told the District Post: “Things need fixing! Realistically we just want to stay up, we’ve had goal droughts before and overcome them – and we’ve got time to recover.” Captain Andy Isaacs added: “Perhaps two nil would
have been a fairer result but we can’t really complain because we’re not creating enough pressure to win short corners at the moment. Our recent form hasn’t been good, so we need to shake ourselves up a bit – we’ve got another tough game on Saturday.” With five teams closely bunched above them, a handful of further points could move Horsham up the table and away from the danger zone – tomor-

Bromley & Beckenham top the table four points clear of Havant, who thrashed hapless Guildford ten nil in their last game. Basement club Guildford remain pointless with eight straight defeats.
