Screaming woman scares off Horsham Park attackers phil dennett News Editor
Two men dragged a screaming woman through Horsham Park as she tried to stop them robbing her. The attack happened last Friday afternoon and detectives are hoping passers-by might have heard the woman’s cries and might be able help them with information. The 58-year-old woman was walking at the park at about 4.15pm on January 20 when she
The woman fought back, screaming throughout the terrifying incident , and the commotion made the men flee saw the two men walking towards her. As she tried to pass them, they each grabbed her arms and dragged her backwards about 15 yards, pulling at her handbag in an attempt to rob her. The woman fought back,
screaming throughout the terrifying incident , and the commotion made the men flee towards the North Parade car park and boxing clubs area. The distressed woman continued to cry out until she met a man at the entrance to the park who remained with her until police arrived. Police say one of the men was white, 5’ 8”, of stocky build, with dark brown hair and a lighter, shorter-style beard. He was wearing a dark green zipped top, dark blue jeans and thick-soled brown leather boots. The second man was reported to be also white, taller, slim and neatly dressed in dark clothing. He wore a black woven “beanie” hat and might have had his trousers turned up. It is thought that both men may be aged between 30 and 50. The victim was treated at Horsham police station for facial and wrist injuries, but did not go to hospital. Anyone with information about the incident or those responsible is asked to email 101@sussex.pnn. police.uk or call 101 quoting serial 923 of 20/01. The park has been the scene several violent incidents in the past year or so. These include a knifepoint robbery on a 53-yearold man and an attack and robbery by five people on a student .

Young talent sought Inspiring young conservationists from Horsham district can compete for a top award for their talents. The Sussex branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England has launched a new competition to find the county’s most inspiring young conservationists. The Environmental Education Award is part of the CPRE Sussex Countryside Awards and is open to schools and colleges across Sussex. It is designed to recognise innovative and imaginative environmental projects which inspire and educate young people. Director of the Campaign’s Sussex branch Kia Trainor, who is a mother of two young children, says she hopes plenty of schools will enter and gain well-deserved recognition for initiatives which get children interested in the natural environment. “Children have a real affinity with the countryside,” she says. “But for many years there has been concern that they are ‘disconnecting’ from nature. “We are really keen to get more children involved in CPRE and have been expanding our program with that in mind. Sussex is such a beautiful county and we are hoping that this competition will encourage more schools to get young people out in the fresh air and engaged in preserving the
world around them.” Organisers say they have intentionally imposed very few restrictions on the entry criteria to allow as much scope as possible for both existing and new projects across the county. CPRE Sussex’s Countryside Awards have been running since 2019 but this is the first time the Campaign has included a category specifically for children. There are four adult categories:
We are really keen to get more children involved in CPRE and have been expanding our program with that in mind The Rural Enterprise Award for businesses; The Sussex Landscapes Award for enhancing the landscape or biodiversity; The Making Places Good Design Award for sustainable construction projects and the Peter Brandon Award for the most outstanding project shortlisted. Sussex Police is supporting a national initiative to tackle knife crime. Special knife bins are being provided to dump the potential weapons. The surrender is part of a national drive to raise awareness of people who have lost their lives to knife crime. The knifes will be given to the British Ironwork Centre and used in a 20 foot tall angel in memory of those whose lives have been tragically lost to knife crime. Chief Inspector Bruce Mathews said: “Thankfully knife crime isn’t generally a problem in Sussex, this surrender will give members of the public the opportunity to dispose of any knives without prosecution. “If you possess a potentially dangerous knife, please take

Someone carrying a knife is much more likely to get stabbed themselves as situations can quickly. Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne said: “I am pleased to hear that Sussex Police will be offering knife bins across Sussex as part of the national knife surrender. “The sculpture will be a very poignant reminder to us all of the victims of knife crime and it’s vital that we continue to raise awareness of the extremely serious consequences of carrying a knife.”

Ottilie helps deliver parking protests Giving walkers a better chance Little Ottilie Hempleman found herself charmingly at the centre of a row about car parking charges. Dad Nick, owner of The Sussex Produce Company, took little Ottilie along when he delivered 1180 signatures from people supporting the No Parking Charges in Steyning campaign, launched in December. The names were handed over at Horsham District Council’s headquarters in the town. Organisers had thought that it would trigger a debate within the council chamber, but they say it now seems it will form as a basis for an appeal. In order to make sure the petition was registered within the allotted time, Nick drove up to Horsham and together with the support of his baby daughter delivered the petition personally. The objectors claim that no consideration has been given to alternative options that have been put forward by some of the rural towns. There are concerns that charging for car parks might hit local trade and the objectors want to keep free parking in the area. Steyning Parish Council is expected to make a statement on the issue this week.
Drivers are to be made more aware of a pedestrian crossing on the A264 at Horsham to make walkers safer at a cost of £18,000. Four large safety signs are going up saying: “Be Aware – Pedestrian Crossing’ near the Horsham bypass crossing point, which links the Northlands Road footway to Old Holbrook. At the same time a pedestrian guardrail will be put in on the south side of the westbound carriageway. Six of days of work to install the signs was expected to be finished this week being carried out on

Dame Vera’s charity moves as 100th birthday nears Ready to help more children
A charity founded by the “Forces’ Sweetheart” Dame Vera Lynn has moved as it plans to help more children with cerebral palsy and their families. Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity has been supporting families and children aged under five with cerebral palsy and other motor learning difficulties since 2001, and it has now moved after many years at Billingshurst to a new home as it celebrates the veteran entertainer’s centenary year. The charity confirmed last week
that it has now moved to its new home, called the Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Centre, in Holmsted Farm, Staplefield Road, near Cuckfield. It says it wants wants to become more accessible to a wider geographic area of families, where it will provide support and help alongside running early intervention sessions and other support services. Dame Vera, President of the charity, will be celebrating her 100th birthday in March. She said: “Establishing the charity
was one of my proudest moments and I am now so pleased to see it grow to help more children and their parents. The new centre will be a wonderful haven of fun, activity and learning.” The charity, which supports children and their families from across the South East, uses conductive education at their core of its service, a pioneering holistic approach to physiotherapy, teaching and learning that aims to give children better control over their movements and posture. Pilar Cloud, executive manager of the charity, said: “We are establishing a facility that will act as a beacon of support and reassurance to our families. Previously, we were only providing one session a week. By moving to this new base, we can push forward and expand what we’re doing. “We are on hand to help any parent that may have questions or concerns about their child’s development. Children and their families are at the fore of everything we do, and we are here to show everything they can achieve. “All our new services will be shaped by the families we currently work with, and those we look forward to supporting in future.” The centre will offer Monday and Friday sessions from February 13 from 10am – 1pm, with outreach services available by appointment. For more information about the charity’s services, volunteering opportunities or fundraising events call 01403 780444, email info@dvlcc.org.uk or visit www. dvlcc.org.uk
weekdays between 9.30am and 3pm to minimise disruption. Lane closures have been operation to protect the workforce and the public. West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Bob Lanzer, said: “These signs will be in the central reservation. “It will make motorists aware of this crossing point, which is used by cyclists and pedestrians to get to and from Horsham. “If motorists are more aware of the crossing it will make it safer for people to cross the A264.”

Helpers after tragedy receive a small boost A group that supports people who have lost loved ones to suicide is one of more than 20 to receive a financial boost from a special fund. Horsham branch of Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide has received £986 from West Sussex County Council’s Small Grants Fund ,which aims to promote the wellbeing of residents, encouraging them to connect, be active, take notice, keep learning and to give. The branch said: “This will enable us to purchase a laptop for both admin and group members to access information, a projector and screen which can be used for future presentations , we are already set to go to University of Surrey and Brighton University to speak with mental health nursing students, and the cost
of rent for next year. “ Other groups in the 21 that received money included Cruse Bereavement Care West Sussex - £999.33, Headway West Sussex - £1,000 and IMPACT Foundation UK £1,000. Christine Field, Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing, said: “Not only is the Small Grants Fund a fantastic opportunity for people to get an extra boost for their small community projects, it is an excellent way for us as a council to actively support our communities. “I have been inspired by the achievements of our residents within organisations all across the county. Without the dedication and commitment of those involved, the incredible work they do would not be possible. “I am looking forward to hearing about and supporting even more brilliant causes as we head into the New Year.” To apply for the next round of funding, visit www.westsussex.gov.uk and search for ‘Small Grants Fund’.

Students from Horsham investigated how the identity of a town was shaped. The youngsters from Farlington School Lower Sixth Form participated in two days of fieldwork at the Field Studies Council centre at Juniper Hall in Dorking. The girls were completing their first A Level fieldwork investigation which now forms a central part of the new 2016 Geography A Level
Significant data analysis followed and the girls were working late in the evening. Starting early on Thursday morning, the girls visited Dorking to investigate the question ‘What is in a place?’ as part of the Changing Places Making Spaces unit. The girls collected both qualitative and quantitative data to create a profile of the town. By examining the geographical context of Dorking, the girls were able to investigate how local, regional and national connections helped shape the identity of Dorking. The girls spent the afternoon at the FSC centre at Juniper Hall completing a written report on their methodology as well as using ArcGIS, a geographic information system for working with maps and geographic information, to present their data on environmental quality. The girls finished by creating a display of their results to conclude their investigation. After these two successful days of fieldwork, the girls are looking forward to their next research day with the council, which will focus on the Sussex coast from Newhaven to Seaford. They will be considering how coastal landscapes can be viewed as systems and through their research they will be able to critically reflect on the management strategies being implemented at Seaford.

Support from Gatwick Diamond The scheme by Britanniacrest for an incinerator at on land north of Horsham has attracted support from the Gatwick Diamond Business organisation. In its submission to West Sussex County Council, which will decide the scheme, the firm says: “Gatwick Diamond Business is one of the largest business organisations in the Coast to Capital region with just under 400members across the region. We work to bring economic prosperity to those members and
to the wider region. We support the development of this Facility as it will · Provide the opportunity to generate electricity from waste that would be taken to landfill · Provide the opportunity to recycle materials that otherwise might go to landfill · Create around 35 jobs · The developer (Britaniacrest) are an experienced and approved waste recycler and processing company · The site is already handling industrial and commercial waste
so there will be no change of use to the site and traffic already accommodates up to 230,000 tonnes of waste per annum With rising costs of energy along with the environmental impact of waste, this Facility will contribute positively to the Gatwick Diamond region.” The application has also attracted strong objections to the council about its size and environmental impact. The closing date for comments to the county council is January 31.

Make Horsham Hospital first stop for many ice falls
Poultry owners warned about avian flu Poultry owners have been reminded that the Avian Influenza Prevention Zone will be extended until February 28. To protect birds from avian flu, anyone who keeps poultry such as chickens, ducks and geese, even as pets, must stop them coming into contact with wild birds. Peter Aston, Trading Standards Manager at West Sussex County Council, said: “Birds should be moved into a suitable building, or if that isn’t possible owners must take sensible precautions to
keep them away from wild birds, like putting up netting to create a temporary enclosure and keeping food and water supplies inside where they cannot be contaminated by wild birds. “Even when birds are kept indoors a risk of infection remains so keepers must also practice good biosecurity, for example by disinfecting footwear and equipment and washing clothing after contact with birds.” There is also a nationwide ban on poultry shows and gatherings. David Barling, West Sussex
Cabinet Member with responsibity for Trading Standards, added: “All poultry keepers must continue to be vigilant and do all they can to protect against this highly pathogenic strain of the disease, which is why the Prevention Zone has been extended into February. Our officers have been distributing flyers to the main poultry feed suppliers in the county to raise awareness of the restrictions. I must stress though that any risk to human health is extremely low.”
People with relatively minor injuries from slips on ice should head first to Horsham Hospital, NHS bosses are advising. The reminder comes after the nearest big hospital, East Surrey, saw 32 people within two hours who had suffered falls with potential injuries during an icy and frosty period. The snag is that units like Horsham are not open at night or at weekends and Bank Holidays, but at other times the NHS says they can ease the pressure on main hospitals in any severe cold spell. The Horsham unit is open 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, excluding Bank Holidays, and can treat acute limb injuries including fractures, wounds, sprains and strains, but excluding potential hip or thigh fractures. It can also treat minor head injuries including wounds to head and face, excluding children under one year and those with associated neck injury, loss of consciousness or any vomiting. Staff can also deal with wounds caused by trauma, foreign bodies in eyes, ear or nose, rib injuries, minor back injuries, excluding chronic conditions or major trauma; insect and animal bites and stings, as well as burns and scalds. Dr Amit Bhargava, lead GP for NHS Crawley Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “With unprecedented levels of demand from a high number of seriously ill people at our Accident and Emergency departments across the local area, choosing
the right place for treatment has never been more important. “With the wet, cold and extremely icy weather conditions our accident and emergency departments have already seen an increase in the number of people
choosing the right place for treatment has never been more important attending with sprains, strains and sometimes broken bones – the vast majority of these people could have been cared for at the Urgent Care Centre or a Minor Injury Unit.” Crawley Urgent Care Centre is open all day and night at Crawley Hospital. It also incorporates the urgent GP walk-in service for patients with a minor injury or medical condition that is not lifethreatening but needs to be seen, or those who are unable to get an urgent appointment with their GP.

Director, Becky Matthews, Annabelle Hart, Abigail Parr, Tom Duliban, Tara Geoghagan and Tone Vallested. Lucy Hargreaves from the college’s Progression Directorate, who runs Young Enterprise at Collyer’s, said: “The team are thoroughly enjoying the challenge of setting up their own business and finding ways to diversify to stay ahead of their competitors. “They all worked tremendously hard to produce a variety of scented candles, in jars and upcycled
teacups, pretty ‘snowflake’ candles, greetings cards, hand crafted gift bags and wrapping paper, and wooden Santa ornaments.” The group received constructive feedback from the Trade Fair judges on what the members could do to further improve their products and display them to their best advantage, and were told that they had the potential to be a winning team. Lucy Hargreaves said: “Focus also independently set-up a ‘popup shop’ in Coco Loco in The Carfax and are now working on new products in time for Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Easter.” Ian McAlister, Senior Tutor at Collyer’s said: : “We are incredibly proud of Zoe, Oscar, Becky, Annabelle, Abigail, Tom, Tara and Tone. Well done to them all! They have been highly motivated, creative and extremely productive. What great preparation for the world of business.” Vice Principal Melanie Russell, said: “Huge thanks to Lucy Hargreaves for all her hard work running Young Enterprise at Collyer’s. “The college’s Progression Directorate is running a number of initiatives in the coming months to prepare our students for the world of work, including Not Going To Uni (NGTU) evenings and guest speakers from industry. I’m delighted that Young Enterprise has made such a positive start.”
Marv makes point to MP Student Marv Jibogu, 15, had a friendly point to make to an MP when he met him. Jeremy Quin, MP for Horsham, visited Christ’s Hospital to meet Marv after the teenager had been elected to the Youth Parliament, a national forum in which young people air views and concerns. And top of the discussion list was the lowering of the voting age. The annual highpoint of the Youth Parliament is a debate in the chamber of the House of Commons itself. The Youth Parliament has decided to focus this year on the “Curriculum for Life” and the proposal to lower the voting age to 16. Marv said: “It was great to have the opportunity to meet Mr Quin. We discussed a range
of topics but the top issue was the lowering of the voting age. I was able to get some insight into the issue. I hope the Youth Parliament’s focus will help with the national campaign and, hopefully, in the long run, help to improve the lives of young people across West Sussex and in the UK.” Mr Quin said he was delighted to meet with Marv and looked forward to remaining in touch during Marv’s time in post. He said: “Momentous events are happening in global politics, re-shaping the world for future generations. I am delighted that Marv and many of his contemporaries are taking a very active interest in politics. I look forward to helping foster that engagement.”

New caseworkers to help fraud victims Vulnerable fraud victims across Sussex will receive emotional and practical support from two new Victim Support Caseworkers funded by Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne. The appointments come as fraud against vulnerable victims increases nationally leaving many affected older people both emotionally and financially devastated. The elderly are often most susceptible to fraud and in Sussex, over a period of three months last summer, high risk victims lost an average of £23,000, which is equivalent to approximately one year in a care home. The Commissioner acted to recruit the new posts after establishing that extra support was needed to help the most vulnerable. The case workers have working started lowing folintense training from both Victim Support and
the team behind Sussex Police’s anti-fraud drive Operation Signature. Mrs Bourne said: “I welcome these two much-needed appointments because fraud against the vulnerable, who are often older residents, in Sussex is rising at an alarming rate. Sadly, when a possible victim is identified their details are often shared with other criminals and so they are at risk of being re-targeted.”A key part of these two new roles will be to firstly offer emotional support and then practical help that may include telephone call blocking technology to screen out unwanted calls. “Criminals are now targeting people in their homes rather than on the streets. They are grooming our vulnerable, our lonely and often elderly residents robbing them of their life savings and potentially the ability to look after themselves. “Whilst I am committed to supporting victims in Sussex, I believe we also need co-ordinated national action to raise awareness of fraud, and introduce tougher sanctions for those who systematically target our elderly. “It is important that we all understand that scams are fraud and fraud is crime.” East Sussex Victim Support Caseworker Sarah Croucher said: “We are going to be going out and visiting people who have been highlighted as slightly more vulnerable and needing that bit of extra support. We will go in and fit equipment, including call blocking kit, if Katy Bourne needed and give that extra bit
of support and linking in with other services to make sure they are not victims again and re-targeted.” West Sussex Victim Support Caseworker Lisa Mills said: “I have been volunteering for Victim Support and the Red Cross previously and have been working with people that have vulnerabilities and other life changing issues as I think it’s a really important area to get into. I am looking forward to the challenge of developing this new role and helping vulnerable people.” Victim Support in Sussex Senior Manager Becky Sharp said: “We’re delighted to be working with Sussex Police’s Operation Signature team. We have recruited Sarah and Lisa to look after vulnerable victims of fraud. Both of those individuals are the type of person who will go in and give very good emotional support to those victims as well as practical advice and I know they are looking forward to getting going.” Sussex Police Operation Signature Financial Abuse Safeguarding Officer Bernadette Lawrie said: “The impact of fraud on vulnerable people can go far beyond just financial so there are a lot of other implications which is why they need that additional support and enhanced prevention measures. These new posts are funded by the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner after we identified a need for an enhanced support service, particularly for vulnerable victims of fraud.”
Understand your teenager’s behaviour Many parents find coping with a teenager difficult. But for those who are faced with violent behaviour, verbal abuse, stealing, substance misuse and poor school attendance, life at home can become unbearable, often leaving parents feeling unable to cope. Horsham District Council’s Community Safety team runs a free course called ‘Understanding Teenage Behaviour’, which has been designed to empower parents to think about the behaviour of their teenager and manage it through a range of different strategies. Course content can be adapted to meet the needs of the parents attending. Course facilitator, Denise Campbell, explained: “The course has been put together by a psychologist and uses a cognitive behaviour approach to help parents understand why their child may be acting in a certain way. We then give parents the tools for improving communication, setting boundaries and putting consequences in place. “We find that parents who
access the course benefit a lot from being able to share their stories and experiences. Parents feel that they aren’t alone and gain the confidence to tackle the issues they are facing.” A participant at a previous course added: “Attending the course has really changed things for me. I feel so much closer to my son and home life is now calmer. I now realise what I was doing wrong and have the tools to change where I need to.” The next six week course starts on Wednesday 1 March, from 7-9.30pm, and will be based in Horsham. Sessions are free and places are limited. For further information or to book a place, please call the council’s Anti-Social Behaviour team on 101 ext. 530233.

Southwater Parish Council is promoting a Neighbourhood Plan and will shortly be consulting regarding development proposals. Neighbourhood Plans were introduced by the Localism Act 2012. This enables bodies such as Parish Councils to put in place a vision and policies for the future development of the area. The Council has sought submissions from landowners and developers, requesting details of development proposals of land within their control. Public consultation is a central part of the Neighbourhood Plan process and their Parish Council will be seeking feedback from members of the local community. Such feedback will help inform and direct the final vision
of the plan. Graham Watkins, Chair of the Southwater Parish Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group said “Southwater Parish Council is committed to producing a Neighbourhood Plan which helps the community inform the future for the Parish. I would encourage residents to attend the event and let us know their views” Saturday 28th January 2017 10:00am – 4:00pm Tuesday 31st January 2017 4:00pm – 8:00pm Venue : The Council Offices, Beeson House, 26 Lintot Square, Fairbank Road, Southwater, West Sussex, RH13 9LA. Shaka shaking a leg at Horsham Sports Club Horsham Cricket & Sports Club has appointed a seasoned professional – Chris (Shaka) Shambrook - as their new Bar Manager and a number of popular events at the club are developing. 46 year old Shaka is no stranger to Cricketfield Road, his 22nd season playing cricket for Horsham Thursday XI beckons and he told the District Post: “Sport is my passion and I enjoy a drink. So, working in a sports club bar is as good as it gets, it’s my ideal job. I even met my partner Sandy here!” What is special about Horsham Cricket & Sports Club for Shaka? “The tradition and the first class facilities, hosting top cricket and the town’s hockey, tennis and squash clubs, who all play in competitive leagues and provide excellent coaching. We’ve got a gym up-

stairs here, ample free parking and our new function room is about to open. There’s an especially great atmosphere at the club when we show big matches like the home nations games on our big screen and we’re putting on a lot of music now. We have Fred Woods’ Big Band here on the first Wednesday of the month and regularly showcase the best local music on offer with top artistes. We also really enjoy hosting functions – its great to see the club full of people enjoying a family wedding celebration or other special occasion and we’re happy to lay on the catering.” The club is also home to many other activities from Weightwatchers, Well Women, the French Circle, Pilates, to pool and darts leagues, business networking and Probus lunches, and monthly quizzes - with Shaka as Quizmaster. During the cricket season there are games on both grounds, often simultaneously, featuring a full programme of Premier League fixtures and many other adult matches, including women’s games, a large number of colt’s fixtures and representative matches. First time visitors to the club are
frequently heard to say that they never realised how exceptionally pleasant the setting is, especially just a few minutes walk from the Carfax – and, what a walk, down the iconic Causeway, through the parish churchyard and across the river. Shaka cut his teeth with a 21 year stint at Billingshurst’s Kings Arms. He has played cricket at Haywards Heath, Wisborough Green - and Billingshurst, where he took over as first team captain, a role subsequently inherited by Sandy’s son Ben Williams. Shaka’s son Dan captains Billingshurst’s thirds, so cricket is very much in the family blood and he sums up with: “The club’s a hidden gem! And, we’re open to non members – but members get a substantial discount at the bar. We’re expanding the opening hours of the kitchen and have just started putting on Saturday morning breakfasts. Also, apart from our many regular activities, we’ve got some special events coming up, for example the Beer Festival on St George’s weekend, a big cricket day on June 21, when Sussex will be playing two competitive T20 matches as part of Chris Nash’s testimonial, and the Music Festival on June 24. And, of course, our annual fireworks and fairground extravaganza on October 27 - which entertains 5,000 visitors to the club” It’s all systems go at Horsham Cricket & Sports Club and the friendly office will be pleased to answer membership and room hire and catering enquiries – Horsham 254628 – www.horshamsportsclub.com
Is marketing your new years resolution? It’s all about commitment janette whitney Business Consultant www.whitneyassocs.co.uk
This month our Award Winning Business expert and author, Janette Whitney advises how commitment to your 2017 marketing is key. Effective marketing of your business requires commitment. No matter what marketing approach you choose, you must be consistent and persistent with it, if you want to see results. You’ve probably heard that advice. But this sort of commitment doesn’t always happen in practice. The late Jay Conrad Levinson, father of the Guerrilla Marketing series, always said, “Mediocre marketing, with commitment, works better than brilliant marketing without commitment.” That’s right, one of the most highlyregarded small business marketing gurus of all time said you don’t need to be brilliant to get clients, so long as you’re committed. In order for any marketing method to pay off for your business, you need to commit to using it over time and following through on what you start. Networking events won’t produce clients unless you return to the same events repeatedly and get to know people there. Social media won’t bring you business unless you continually expand your network and post useful content regularly. Speaking gigs won’t result in clients unless you follow up with your audience afterwards, usually more than once. And so on. There’s nowhere in small busi-
ness marketing that commitment isn’t essential. And yet, entrepreneurs all too often avoid it. Committing to a particular marketing approach can be scary. You worry that you’ll spend time and money and it won’t work. Or that you’ve made the wrong choice about what to do. Or when the first couple of prospective clients don’t bite, you feel rejected, and it makes you want to try something else instead. Perhaps a metaphor will help. Remember when you were learning to ride a bicycle? In the beginning, you were wobbly and uncertain. Maybe you had stabiliser wheels to keep you upright, or perhaps you fell off a couple of times and skinned your elbow. You didn’t go very fast at first, or get very far. But you stuck with it. You saw that other children had learned to ride their bikes, and now they went everywhere on them, having fun. Wanting that outcome for yourself, you committed to the challenge of learning to ride. This is the sort of commitment you need to successfully market your business. Instead of spending time worrying you won’t succeed or second-guessing what you’ve chosen to do, put that energy into following through on each marketing approach you select. That way you’ll have a plan to follow that you won’t want to change just because you hear about a new marketing idea. And you WILL see results, if you are consistent and persistent. Need help with your marketing plan to ensure you achieve your 2017 growth target? Then call Janette on 01403 733671 or visit wwwwhitneyassocs.co.uk for more information.
PD Kitchens to Launch New Bedroom Range Southwater based kitchen and Bedroom designers and suppliers, PD Kitchens are about to launch a brand new range of bedroom furniture. PD Kitchens, which has been in operation for over 38 years, is proud to announce the launch in line with their new partnership with Kindred Living Ltd. The skilled team will work alongside Kindred Living Ltd to source the best materials to design and install a variety of bedrooms, suitable for all spaces and properties. The new collection has been created in response to outdated designs in the market which don’t capture the imagination of modern tastes or designers. General Manager Paul Rimmer states, “We’re very happy to offer all existing and new customers a brand new range of bedrooms that provide great choice as well as style and practicality, and most of all great value for money. Kindred has launched following two years of research and development providing fitted bedrooms perfectly matched to the
discerning tastes of modern consumers. Each piece is of the highest quality and can be matched to either update an existing bedroom or to be a part of a total refit”. At launch the initial range will include four modern and two classic designs, each focused on having a desirable balance between form and function. Bespoke bedroom design The Southwater team will offer initial consultations, custom designs and full installation and maintenance of bedrooms, whether a one off purchase or a multiple order for businesses such as hotels and B&Bs. Along with the new range of bedrooms, PD Kitchens still offer a bespoke service where the units and doors can be made to order and painted in any colour or finish that’s required. This further personalises the contemporary themes and gives more choice to the client who may look to have the bedroom suit the existing aesthetics of their home. “Our colour palette is very complimentary and on trend, including most Farrow and Ball colours
in painted in both matt and gloss options, whilst doors are available in glass, mirror or walnut and can be further tailored for each individual fitting”, adds Paul. “In addition, we’re looking forward to the response from our customers in regards to the new accessories range which maximises storage and lighting - ideal to create a cosy, organised bedroom”. Updated showroom As part of the launch, PD Kitchens showroom is being updated to include various bedroom layouts for commercial and domestic customers to visit and get a true feel of what’s on offer. On Sunday 5 February, audiences at The Hawth will have the chance to enjoy the final magic ever conceived by the much loved, much missed Paul Daniels. It was created especially for the brand new musical, ‘Don’t Dribble on the Dragon’. ‘Don’t Dribble on the Dragon’ is the latest production from the award-winning People’s Theatre Company, which specialises in fantastical, original drama and music for three to eight year olds - and grown-ups too.
This spectacular musical escapade is the feel-good story of Jack and Tom, growing up and the importance of family. It’s a wonderful mix of fun, pathos, instantly singalong to songs - and Daniels’ jaw-dropping magic trickery. Tom is a teething toddler with a cool older brother, a secret dragon… and a dribbling problem that just won’t stop! Tom’s endless drooling threatens to tear the brothers’ friendship apart, but can their dragon’s amazing magic help them put it

back together again or only end up making things worse? Daniels’ technical brilliance conjures up such amazements as the fire-breathing dragon, explosions, lights that appear from thin air, a magical sponge cake and gravity-defying mangos! ‘Don’t Dribble on the Dragon’ is the latest family musical by Steven Lee and is based on his latest book. Steven, 43, is the multi-talented actor and artistic director of The People’s Theatre Company and stars in the show as teenage brother Jack, a role for which he’s had to perfect his skateboarding techniques with gruelling daily training over the last few months! Steven is also the writer and producer of ‘Santa In Love’, which delighted the audiences at The Hawth at Christmas and also the best-selling ‘How The Koala Learnt To Hug’. At the end of each show, as an extra treat, Steven and the cast will be available to sign copies of Don’t Dribble on the Dragon, the heart-warming picture book with illustrations by Shalini Vadivelu. Copies can be bought at the theatre, priced £5.99, or in advance (or afterwards) from Amazon and all good bookshops. The show is aimed at adults and cool kids of all ages (but not recommended for the under 2s). Running time is roughly 60 minutes. Performance: Sunday 5 February, 2.30pm, The Hawth Theatre. Tickets: £10.50 (family of four £38), available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 or by visiting: hawth.co.uk

endorsed by the Cash family. The band features award winning Clive John as Johnny Cash, Jill
Schoonjans as June Carter, Nick Davis on Electric guitar & Vocals, Martin Bentley on Double Bass & Vocals and Darren Bazzoni, Drums & Vocals. This year also sees the biggest production to date, with the ‘Carter Sisters’ and the ‘JC Horns’. Considered ‘the finest tribute in the world to the legend that is Johnny Cash’, the roadshow will perform material from throughout Cash’s career, including ‘Walk the Line’ and ‘Folsom Prison Blues’, recorded with Sun Records in the 1950s, to ‘Hurt’, Johnny Cash’s last release in 2002, recorded by Rick Rubin for his American Recordings label. There are many stops in between, bringing the audience all the favourites, ‘Man in Black’, ‘Boy named Sue’, ‘The Ring of Fire’. The show also brings a focus on the duets Johnny and June sang, including ‘Jackson’. From start to finish, the band take the audience through the Johnny Cash live show experience. The chemistry of Johnny and June is also brought to the stage and, with the accompanying video projection, which brings evocative images to each song, helps to complete the story of the life of a ‘legend’. The Johnny Cash Roadshow is energetic and entertaining for all to enjoy and tickets are a perfect gift for all Country music fans! Performance: Friday 17 February at 7.30pm, The Capitol Theatre. The Blue Orange Theatre: Lady Chatterley’s Lover Lady Chatterley’s Lover was originally published in 1928 and the book soon became notorious for its story of the physical relationship between a working class man and an upper class woman. In this stunning adaptation by Roman De Fruscan, all the elements of tension and intrigue of the original text are brought to the stage. The Blue Orange Theatre’s production of Lady Chatterley’s Lover is both innovative and traditional. They remain true to the original novel, but bring the text to life, using exciting theatrical devices, making the story both engaging and accessible. The story follows Connie Reid, a cultured, independent thinker who marries the emotionally distant Sir Clifford Chatterley. Connie turns to the bed of the lowborn gamekeeper, Mellors, and experiences true passion and genuine intimacy for the first time. This, however, begins to lead to a dramatic love triangle and public scandal. “Obscenity only comes in when the mind despises and fears the body, and the body hates and resists the mind.” Warning: This production
contains full frontal nudity and scenes of an explicit sexual nature. Performance: Wednesday 15 February at 7.45pm, The Hawth
Studio. Tickets: £13.50 (discounts: £11.50), available from The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 or by visiting hawth.co.uk

Housebuyers and first time buyers sales buck seasonal trends say NAEA
Traditaionally November and December are quieter months for Estate Agents, however the NAEA’s recent release of figures for 2016 appear to prove a buck in this trend. Number of prospective buyers registered per branch last month was the highest in 13 years for the month of December Record December sales to first time buyers (FTBs) since 2001 Number of houses available to buy increased marginally Despite heightened interest from potential buyers, the number of sales agreed dropped by a quarter from November NAEA issues December Housing Market report1 Demand for properties Last month, the number of house hunters rose to the highest level seen since 2003 for the month of December The average number of prospective buyers registered per branch last month was 386, a 12 per cent rise from November when estate agents registered 344 on average. Sales to FTBs In December, a third (32 per cent) of sales were made to FTBs – the highest number for the month of December since 2001 when it was also 32 per cent This is also a ten per cent increase from November when 29 per cent of sales were made to the group. Supply of properties and sales agreed The number of properties available to buy on estate agents’ books in December was 41– this is a marginal increase from November when there were 39. Despite an increase in supply and demand, the number of sales agreed dropped by a quarter (25 per cent) last month from eight in November to six in December. Mark Hayward, Managing Director, National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) comments on the findings: “In November we saw a seasonal slowdown; typically it’s uncommon for people to buy and move close to Christmas. Yet, our December findings have completely bucked this seasonal trend. With demand at an all-time December high and sales to FTBs at their highest on record, 2016 closed on a positive note following several months of uncertainty. However, despite an encouraging December, there remains a clear shortage of homes. We await the government’s housing white paper to see how it intends to tackle this and hope the market continues to improve for both buyers and sellers.”

POSITIVE OUTLOOK Knight Frank’s James Nowak shares his views on the 2017 market
It may come as a surprise to some, given the negative press coverage surrounding the property market in recent months, but 2016 was a year of success for Knight Frank in Horsham. The team and I sold more properties in 2016 than in any of the last 3 years. As Horsham is fast becoming one of the most popular market towns in West Sussex we are keen to offer as many possible homes for sale in the town and surrounding villages. Such is our commitment that we are offering free market appraisals of your home in order to provide up-to-date pricing advice. Over the last 5 years property prices on average have increased by 37% according to www.mypropertygenius.co.uk, which is a
fantastic tool to use when either selling or buying properties as it provides indicative figures and local trends. With a network of over 330 offices worldwide, including in excess of 30 in London, our applicant database is comprehensive and farreaching. Our experienced staff separate us from our competitors. All have bought and sold property recently and as a result know only too well the importance of communication throughout the process. All of the above, combined with our exceptional bespoke service and competitive fees, mean that Knight Frank should be your first choice for selling properties of all shapes and sizes.

Farlington’s Issy and Eloisa make a splash Aquathlon Farlington School had great success at the Medway Big Splash Aquathlon with two students finishing up as winners. Issy Hayes, aged 12, from the Senior School and Eloisa Symonds, aged 10, from the Prep School won their respective cat-
egories at the event. Issy from Horsham had to swim 300m followed by a 3000m run and Eloisa from Cranleigh had a 150m swim followed by a 1500m run. Times for the two disciplines are added together to determine the fastest time and winner in each category. Issy recording a time of 4:02 for the swim and 11:05
for the run and Eloisa set 02:23 for her swim and 05:54 for her 1500m run. This was the first time an Aquathlon has been held as part of The Medway Big Splash event and the large number of entrants contained some top athletes so it was a superb result for the girls and the school.

Horsham Sparrows celebrate 50 golden years
The Swans give their support to the Hornets Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor
50 years of Horsham Sparrows is to be celebrated
Horsham Football Club’s future is reaching a crucial stage with a decision from Horsham District Council on the proposed new ground and facilities at Hop Oast (Horsham Golf & Fitness) and the jointly lodged application of a development at The Holbrook Club expected in early March. Ahead of that decision the club are asking for support for both applications to be made by members of the public, organisations or any other group or business who believe that the approval of the developments would benefit the town. The proposed Horsham Football Club development includes a Football Association category D ground, an all-weather
Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter 50 years ago football fever gripped the nation – England had just won the World Cup at Wembley, beating West Germany 4-2, Geoff Hurst completing his legendary hat trick during nail-biting extra time. The Roy of the Rovers style story inspired legions of schoolboys to play, and to meet the demand Horsham Sparrows was formed, becoming founder members of the new mini Minor league, now HDYFL (and, in 2004, the Sussex County Women’s and Girls’ League). The name Sparrows stuck after someone commented that the kids looked like a flock of the birds in pursuit of the ball! From that humble beginning, involving less than 20 boys, the club has grown and grown to encompass 17 squads with around 300 members playing in nine boys’ teams, five girls teams, a women’s side and the Little Kickers, starting as young as four years old. Sparrows’ Secretary Simon King tells the District Post: “We’re entirely run through our fantastic team of over 40 volunteers and have dedicated
committee members also serving on the League’s committee. And, we’re very fortunate to have 10 of our players helping to coach our younger teams. We rely on such goodwill - and our kind sponsors. The club is really thriving – we’ve been awarded the FA’s Community Charter Standard accolade, the only club in Horsham to currently hold this. To qualify for that we had to satisfy the FA that our coaching, children’s safeguarding, equal opportunities and general conduct and organisation comply with their requirements. We’ve actually been targeted by the FA to be involved with their initiative to get young girls into football and have applied for funding accordingly.” The icing on the cake came when the Sparrows won Sussex FA Community Club of the Year in 2015. Players are clearly playing for the club because they really enjoy it, everybody getting a chance, whatever their ability, the club’s maxim being: “to give children a good, positive experience in a safe, supportive and encouraging environment”. The club are also rightly proud of the in-house Level 1 course that they ran which meant that many of the clubs current coaches were
able to gain their qualification together. Horsham Sparrows is a progressive club, so what of the future? Simon says: “We’ve formed a partnership with Horsham YMCA FC, hoping that some of our players will stay in the game through the YM youth set up, and we’re also partnered with Brighton & Hove Albion in the community – we play in Horsham Park in our iconic blue and white colours – and are participating in their disability project at the Holbrook Club. Basically we just want to carry on being successful, getting even better as we grow.” Meanwhile, May 6 will be another red letter day for Horsham Sparrows when there will be a special golden anniversary Sparrows Day celebration at Collyers College, with five pitches in action and an evening presentation. Ian Wright attended a previous Sparrows Day and Simon King would be delighted to hear from any former Sparrows - especially if they have any photographs or special memories of the club and would like to come along on the big day – secretary@ horshamsparrows.co.uk – www. horshamsparrows.co.uk.
Storrington’s Bill Davis finally gets lucky Horse Racing Martin Read - Sports Reporter If at first you don’t succeed, try, try and try again. Sound advice, but surely there must come a point when even the most dedicated, positive person calls it a day and does something different? No - not if you are Storrington’s Bill Davis. Until last week Bill had been breeding and racing horses for 27 years without a single winner, then, at Lingfield, he at last tasted success when 1-2 favourite Ayr of Elegance stormed home, piloted by tall, reliable jockey George Baker in a flat race. The win was all the sweeter because the horse, raised as an orphan by Bill, was declared a winner last May, only to be deprived when a photo confirmed that she had been shaded
by a nose, Bill musing: “That was terribly disappointing; I thought at last I’d broken the mould.” And, the bad luck did not stop there – in August Ayr of Elegance was joint favourite but got her nose stuck in the starting stall grilling. Since 1990, 87 year old Bill has bred 16 horses and raced seven of them and admits that he has thought about quitting before saying: “But then you have a night’s sleep and decide to carry on. It was just madness that kept me searching for that first win!” Cissbury based former jockey Philip Hide – who initially worked with local horse racing legend Josh Gifford - trains Bill’s horses. Philip rode his first winner at Fontwell in the early 90s and was first past the post on
3G main pitch and a 3G training pitch as well as a single-storey club house. To enable this development a separate but linked application is being made for a 58 home development on a part of the land at The Holbrook Club, which is owned by Horsham FC. Support for the club is coming in from near and far and recently Horsham CEO John Lines received a letter from Premier League Club Swansea City who the team played in a memorable cup tie, in front of a large crowd and the Sky TV cameras, back in 2007. Details of how to offer support for the applications can be found at www.home4horshamfc.co.uk where there are links to the HDC planning applications and an opportunity for those interested to make a comment.
another 400 occasions, including carrying off the Royal SunAlliance at Cheltenham in 1995. When injury curtailed his riding career Philip joined Gary Moore’s Cisswood yard, graduating to Assistant Trainer before branching out on his own. After Bill broke his duck at Lingfield, emotional Philip said: “We hadn’t been able to enjoy the race because we were just waiting for something to go wrong! You can’t believe that anyone would keep horses for so long without a winner, but Bill is the epitome of that old English spirit of not giving up.” Bill Davis summed up his belated triumph with: “I just enjoy owning horses but the end product is that you want a winner and at last I’ve got one. It’s fantastic, so wonderful!”

Newcomer Laura excels at English Championships Laura Hollobon competing at the English Championships
Photo by Under the Bar Photography Weightlifting Dave Snith - Sports Editor Horsham’s Laura Hollobon made her debut at the English Weightlifting Championships where she
competed in the Women’s 58kg A Class and amazingly finished in 3rd place. To make the achievement even more remarkable Laura only took up the sport 15 months ago and
competed in her first competition as recently as last May. Since then she has seen a meteoric rise in her results, leading to last weekend’s superb achievement. At the English Championships – held in Milton Keynes – Laura lifted 72kg in the Snatch and 84kg in the Clean and Jerk giving her a total of 156kg which was just 3kg short of the competitor who finished second. Although the English Championships are part of the qualifying competitions for the Australian 2018 Commonwealth Games, Laura is not targeting the Commonwealth’s due to it only being her first year of competing. She is instead focussing on getting to the qualifying total for the under 23 European Championships later this year with her next major competition being the Senior British Championships in July. Laura, who lives in Horsham and works as a coach at Horsham Gymnastic Centre, said the result at the English Championships came as a surprise as she was looking to gain some national competition experience and had no real expectations of being so highly placed. Laura praised the work of her coach, Emma Hitchcock, saying “Emma has been my coach from day one and I owe her everything. I wouldn’t be competing in weightlifting if it was not for her and I am very grateful for all the time and effort she has put in for me. I am very pleased with my performance and I am now looking to improve my total going into the British Championships”.
Joggers putting in the miles Joggers Pete O’Connell, Steve Wigmore and Paul Adams
Athletics Phil Liberman - Horsham Joggers The Horsham Joggers runners have started to build their mileage for upcoming marathons with 10 miles and half marathon being the distances of choice.
At the Farnborough half, Raff Vitale once again came painfully close to breaking the one and a half hour mark clocking 1.33.34 he was followed home by Matt Payne 1.41.48, Penny Barron 1.51.37, Lou Johnson 2.03.12, Sue Hensman 2.27.31, Elizabeth Scott
2.27.08, Deb Weller 2.36.58, Lorraine Hunter 2.36.58 and Ashley Wilkinson 2.36.58. In the picturesque surroundings of Denbies Wine Estate the annual 10 mile trail race was held with Joggers being well represented. Steve Mitchell finished 41st in the 300+ field in 1.19.30 followed by Stuart Carruthers 1.23.55, Mark Aylmore 1.31.46, Michael Coombes 1.32.07, Richard Cherriman 1.33.18, Derek Buckman 1.38.07, Rob Jochimsen 1.39.45, Michelle Garratt 1.39.49, Finbarr Cotter 1.46.31, Helen Mallows 1.58.06 and Amanda Avery 2.19.29. Finally over the shorter distance but muddier conditions the Sussex Masters Cross Country championships were held at a frosty Lancing with Womens V45 team of Janine Littler Val Purnell and Ali Gormely finishing 7th and Fiona Clifton, Viv Underhill and Liz Scott 12th. In the Mens V50 Horsham Joggers took the bronze medal finishing third thanks to Pete O’Connell Steve Wigmore and Paul Adams.
Ebullient second half secures handy Pulborough win London 3 South East Gillingham Anchorians 24 - 38 Pulborough Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Much local sport fell victim to the weather but Pulborough’s game against Gillingham Anchorians in Kent (postponed from the previous Saturday) preceded, the only match played in Boro’s London 3 South East League. And, it resulted in good news for Boro, who, after 14 games played, remain second - with 55 points, on level pegging with Lewes. Both teams have 422 points but Boro have a significantly superior points difference. Thanet Wanderers are top with 60 points. But, at Gillingham, the hosts were 19 nil to the good at the break, with Boro at severe risk of returning home empty handed. Circumspect about the conditions threatening injury, Boro had been uncharacteristically cautious initially, whereas the hosts had been giving all from the off. After being implored to harden up and not be so preoccupied with the state of the pitch, Boro had a completely different second half, clawing their way back into the game with great determination and soon finding
themselves trailing by just two points. Gillingham did manage to post another try but the closing stages unquestionably belonged to Boro, who ran out comfortable enough winners in the end after scoring six tries. Ollie Paige, Tom Pascal, Ollie Coombe-Tennant and Brad Game got one each and Will Truscott two, with four out of four conversions for George Lee after Frazer Oliphant- Hope had unusually kicked unsuccessfully. Boro Head Coach Clayton Saunders told the District Post: “We were not in a good place at the interval but a bit of straight talking did the trick! After that we played really well as a team so I won’t nominate anyone as Man of the Match. But, it was particularly pleasing to witness our prop, Tom Pascal, getting a debut try, and also good to welcome Stu Stanley up from the 2s and see Gareth Nichols playing his first game for the firsts. We were all relieved to get through without injuries.” Tomorrow (Saturday) Boro return home to entertain Sheppey, whom they beat 1825 in Kent early in the season. Despite being sixth in the table, Sheppey have the unenviable record of conceding the highest number of points (439) of any team in the league.
