Quartet who saved 1200 lives honoured phil dennett News Editor
A Horsham man who has given blood for nearly half a century is one of four West Sussex donors recognised for saving up to 1,200 lives between them. Colin Pothecary, 61, an engineer, started giving blood NHS Blood and Transplant at the age of 18 and has been a loyal donor for 43 years, donating 100 times. Giving blood seems to be in the family and Colin said: “I started giving blood as my father was a donor, and I naturally followed in his footsteps. Giving blood should be a normal part of your routine and helps to ensure blood stocks are kept to a healthy level.” The service says the blood given by the four from West Sussex saved the lives of about 2,000 critically people who would have died without it. In all the lifesaving efforts of 30 blood donors from across Brighton and surrounding areas, who have collectively saved up to 9,000 lives, were honoured with commemorative medals at the ceremony in Brighton. All the
donors have donated at least 100 times. Each blood donation can potentially save the lives of up to three people. So if a donor has given blood 100 times they have potentially helped save the lives of up to 300 patients through donating blood. Just one per cent of blood donors reach 100 donations. The guest speaker at the ceremony was Claire Baldwin, who lost her son, Harvey, aged eight, two years ago after an 18 month battle with Leukaemia. Claire said: “It was a privilege to meet with such dedicated donors. Harvey received a total of 35 units of blood and 56 pools of platelets during his 18 months of illness. Before this we were unaware of the needs of those undergoing any long term treatment, let alone a young child with blood cancer. But our eyes have been opened to the need for blood for many different reasons. “And I would like to thank blood donors for the 91 times they prolonged my son’s life and gave us another day with him.” To find out more about how you could start saving lives and book your first appointment visit www.blood.co.uk or call 0300 123 23 23.”

Tom swaps hot seat for saddle Sergeant who survived Hell Horsham council boss Tom Crowley swapped his hot seat for a saddle to help people who need a hand in life. Tom, who is Horsham District Council’s Chief Executive, has handed £2,300 to the Chairman’s Charitable Trust Fund from his cycling challenge. To raise the money he rode 120 miles off-road along the entire length of the South Down’s National Park starting in Winchester and ending in Eastbourne via Petersfield, Arundel, Steyning and miles of chalk downland. Tom said: “The Chairman’s Charitable Trust Fund was established in 2013 with the purpose of giving a helping hand to less fortunate local people by providing support to make difference in their lives.“I am extremely grateful to everyone who sponsored me so generously for what is a very worthy cause. Many thanks.” Chairman of Horsham District Council Cllr Christian Mitchell said: “I am so grateful to the many people who have donated so generously to benefit the Chair-
man’s Charitable Trust Fund and my thanks go to Tom for completing such a challenging event – it’s a fantastic achievement. “The money raised will support a great number of local people where no other charitable group is in a position to help. “The Trust Fund distributes modest amounts of money for very special circumstances, particularly at difficult times like school holidays, the winter months and Christmas.” Examples of how the fund has helped include supermarket vouchers to elderly tenants in Saxon Weald accommodation for Christmas food, a family with a disabled child was given money to buy a special mattress and help was given to an elderly couple living in a caravan towards their food bill. Money was awarded to help buy food parcels in the Billingshurst area, funds were given to families in Saxon Weald accommodation towards day trips in the long summer holiday, and an elderly lady was awarded money to buy a Christmas hamper.

receives historic honour
Allan with granddaughters Old sergeant Allan Norman is now the holder of a top military honour for leading troops through the hell of Normandy after D-Day landings. Thousands of Allied and German troops were killed or maimed in the fight to free France in the later stages of the Second World War. Allan, 95, celebrated with friends and family as he received the Legion d’honneur, or Legion of Honour, award at his care home, Sussexdown in Storrington. First established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, the Legion of Honour is an award for excellent military conduct presented by the French Government. Allan, formerly of the RAF Bomber Command Squadron, received the honour in recognition of his service efforts landing on the beaches of Normandy the day after D-Day and then throughout the Second World War in France, Belgium, Holland, Denmark and Germany. Allan signed up to the Air and Sea Rescue Unit in Newhaven, before joining the RAF regiment as a Sergeant. The Legion of Honour rewards him for his actions as Sergeant leading his team through the Normandy beaches to defend the airfields of Normandy. Allan’s team were also responsible for rearming and refuel-
ling aircraft and later in the war, assisting in the liberation of the Belsen concentration camp. Several members of Allan’s family also attended the presen-

Captain François Jean presented Allan with the award, after which family, visitors and fellow residents enjoyed a light buffet lunch. Captain Jean, French Consul, said: “It must have been a very frightening experience for all involved. The Battle of Normandy went on for three months after D-Day and Allan would have certainly been right in the middle of it.”

Joyce on wedding day
A son is hoping District Post readers might fill a gap in his mother’s family history. Joyce Foster worked on a farm in the Henfield area in the 1940s, but her son Clive cannot discover its name. Clive, 64, said: “It’s a long time ago, but I am trying to find the farm on which my mother served in the Second World War as a Land Girl. “Her name was Joyce Olive Fos-

15 years of Horsham Fairtrade at Christmas Horsham MP Jeremy Quinn opened the 15th Horsham Fairtrade Christmas Market, last weekend, at St. John’s Roman Catholic Church Hall in Springfield Road, near Wilko. The Fairtrade Christmas Market is always a very popular event in Horsham, which has been a Fairtrade town for many years. The market offers a wonderful opportunity to buy a wide range of fairly
traded products .These can be a delight for those who find treats for themselves, but the market is also a great source of unusual, and often unique Christmas gifts. Organisers state that the added benefit to making a purchase is that it helps those, in the developing world, to improve their lives: “For many poor families, Fairtrade means that they can afford to send their children to school”.
the longer I leave it, the less likely anyone might remember or have any record of anything. I know it’s a long shot, but if anyone can help, or know someone who might, with a piece of the jigsaw I’d be grateful”. Clive can be emailed on clivegshelley@ gmail.com .

Reason to celebrate with a cake Workers who help residents improve and renovate their homes celebrated a tenth anniversary of their shared council service. Sussex Building Control is the shared building support service from Horsham District Council and Crawley Borough Council. To recognise this 10-year milestone a party was organised for regular clients, staff and former colleagues. The Sussex Building Control team work in conjunction with builders and architects to help
local residents improve and renovate their homes. The organisation started out with a desire by both councils to deliver better value whilst improving service levels. Building Control Manager Stephen Shorrocks said: “In this current competitive environment by working together we can continue to deliver a service that exceeds our customers’ expectations and maintain a service that is built on quality, reputation and impartiality.”
Stephen Shorrocks cuts cake
School workers turned positively purple to help highlight the vital need for early diagnosis of a killer cancer. And for one the day was tragically significant. Farlington School staff wore purple and there were matching cakes to support Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month and highlight the importance of early diagnosis. Sue Cooper‘s brother Adrian Bunting died from pancreatic
cancer aged 47 after a GP missed his fatal condition. She organised the Wear Purple day to highlight the problem. Sue, the Horsham school’s head of textiles, said: “He wasn’t diagnosed as having cancer by his doctor, but only when he went to A and E. There he was told he had only four to five weeks to live. Sadly, this is true for many. Pancreatic cancer is hard to diagnose and the only hope for any treatment is early diagnosis.”
Just under 9,000 people are diagnosed with it in the UK every year. It has the lowest five-year survival rate of any common cancer and one that has barely improved in 40 years, though Ulster University has recently claimed a new treatment for pancreatic cancer could significantly increase survival rates. More information can be found on the Pancreatic Cancer UK website www.pancreaticcancer.org.uk.
Appeal after burglary Passers-by could hold clues to a burglary in a village. Police are appealing for witnesses after a theft of jewellery and silverware at Upper Beeding. It is believed offenders broke into the property in Henfield Road through a back window sometime between 7.30am and 3.45pm on November 17. An untidy search of the property had been made and a significant amount of jewellery and silverware was stolen. Detective Constable Dave Wadley said: “The burglary happened during daylight hours and so I believe there’s a good chance someone will have seen something that could help with our investigation. “If you were in the area on Thursday, 17 November and saw anything suspicious, no matter how insignificant you may think it is, then please get in touch.” Witnesses can email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk quoting serial 846 of 17/11. You can also report online to https://sussex.police.uk/ contact-us/response-to-appeal/ or call 101.

Emily, who surname is not being made public for personal reasons, was praised by judges for her immense courage and determination. Despite battling complex trauma, Emily is said by the YMCA to be warm, committed and reliable. stage was overwhelming. My life has changed so much since getting involved with YMCA and I appreciate everyone who has supported me. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to attend the ceremony in person as I’m in Tanzania volunteering with Raleigh International but when I found out I’d won I felt extremely happy and grateful.” Emily’s win was one of three for the YMCA DownsLink Group, which includes the Horsham area, in the Youth Matters YMCA federation’s national awards programme. The Youth Matters 2016 awards ceremony was held at the exclusive central London venue, 8 Northumberland Avenue and hosted by TV presenter June Sarpong MBE. With ten categories for nominations, the YMCA says winning three awards this year is a remarkable achieve-
ment. The prestigious title of Accommodation Project of the Year was awarded to YMCA DLG’s Empty Homes. The Training and Education Project of the Year award was given to YMCA Positive Placements, a project which operates in Brighton, Mid Sussex, Horsham and Guildford. Chas Walker, Chief Executive of YMCA DLG, said: “We are overjoyed and excited to have won these three significant awards. It is brilliant to receive recognition for our innovative projects and I am particularly pleased to see Emily named as Young Leader of the Year, she absolutely deserves it.”
Fortnightly bin collection from 2018 update Councillors have confirmed that residents of Horsham district will have fortnightly rubbish bin collection despite an online demand for a re-think. The cabinet of Horsham District Council cabinet has agreed to the change from 2018 in a bid to save about £1million from the district budget. Details of the plan were discussed at

last Thursday’s meeting. While opponents argued against the scheme councillors were told the authority needed to save money and the scheme had worked at Mid Sussex and Chichester, as well as being used in most councils across the country. The bin collection change is also being made to help increase the amount recycled. Under the new system the collection of material for recycling will alternate on a weekly basis with household waste.

A time to remember Residents of Horsham and surrounding areas will be coming together to remember loved ones at Tree of Light services on Sunday. The events will take place at Trinity United Reformed Church, Billingshurst at 5pm, Holy Trinity Church, Horsham at 6.30pm and St Margaret’s Church, Warnham at 6.30pm. For those people who cannot attend these services there is another Horsham service taking place the following week on December 11 at St Mark’s s Church, North Heath Lane, at 6.30pm. There are also other services taking place across Sussex and Surrey. The Tree of Light services will include Christmas carols and
readings, and have been jointly organised by local hospice St Catherine’s Hospice with local churches. The Tree of Light offers bereaved friends and relatives an opportunity to reflect on the year that has passed and honour those who have touched their lives but are no longer here. Everyone who attends is invited to write a message and dedicate a special star to their loved one, and place it on the Tree of Light, in return for a donation to the hospice. There will also be a Book of Remembrance. The event is open to everyone in the community, regardless of whether or not you have had a relative cared for by St Catherine’s. Amongst the 2,000 local people cared for by St Catherine’s last
year, 80 per cent of patients received care in their own homes, including in and around Horsham. Rev Lisa Rainier, Spiritual Care Lead for St Catherine’s, said: “Christmas is a season full of events and gatherings as friends, family and colleagues join together to celebrate. At St Catherine’s we appreciate that this can be a poignant and difficult time of the year for those who have been bereaved, and so our Tree of Light Service offers a valuable opportunity for us to gather to remember and celebrate those who are no longer here, among others who understand.” All donations will help St Catherine’s s continue to support patients and their family and friends facing a terminal diagnosis.
Customers help Daniel see it through Customers powered a Horsham worker on his gruelling 76-mile challenge to help people with heart problems. Daniel Buckland of Motorline Volkswagen said the encouragement and money pledges for the British Heart Foundation kept him going on toughest stretches in the London to Brighton offroad ride. His ride raised £650 for the charity and he said: “It was the last 25 miles that proved to be the most challenging. “The last section up and over the South Downs was the biggest test. I’d run out of steam by this point so these big hills required a lot of mental strength to complete. Thankfully I did and it felt great to complete the ride in 6 hours 27 minutes. I am blown away by the generosity of not just family, friends and colleagues but also the amazing support from Motorline customers. Daniel in action
“While the ride was hard going at times, I felt great pride in the achievement knowing that my efforts would contribute to raising much needed funds for the charity.” Transaction Manager Daniel joined the other riders as they set off from the University of Roehampton on what is Europe’s biggest charity mountain bike event. Sporting his Motorline Volkswagen branded cycling apparel, Daniel was one of more than 6000 riders taking part in this challenging and varied ride through the Surrey and Sussex countryside. In a fitness regime over the last few years, Daniel has regularly clocked up over a 100 miles each week which made the first fifty miles relatively plain sailing. It was the last 25 miles that proved to be the most challenging.

Wine Notes Late Autumn is a good time for drinking red wines, with all the seasonal meats on the market. A lot of reds go well with dishes such as venison and those lovely autumn casseroles. Villa Maria is a consistent producer and its slightly savoury Pinot Noir from its Private Bin range is excellent with grilled meats, in fact both red and white. It is available from the CoOp,Morrisons and Asda. Slightly heavier on the palate is the gorgeous Chateau Rouge Corbieres, made from Syrah, Grenache and Carignan, its unusual squat bottle. Beaujolais Village ( not to be confused with Beaujolais Nouveau in any way) is excellent with beef, and the Jadot range from Waitrose is well worth a try. Of course there is plenty of

choice in reds with South African Pinotage and Californian Zinfandel my favourites if you fancy getting away from Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. For the richest stews and casseroles a Barolo from sunny Italy is beautiful, but the wine is a bit dear so it had better be a special occasion. For those who like to freshen up their taste buds with a white, Alsace’s typically racy Clos Saint-Jacques Riesling 2014 from Majestic is with great salmon and soft cheese, while the Villa Maria Private Bin Reisling is slightly less zingy but thoroughly enjoyable. For a real belter of a white wine try a white Rioja for a change, the Continio Blanca 2014 from Waitrose will do wonders for taste buds. Look out for good offers before Christmas because wine producers have a lot of wines to shift and competition is strong, especially
in the sparkling wine market. PJD.

Fred Woods Big Band still blowing up a storm!
“Fred Woods’ Big Band is the best kept musical secret in Horsham!” – so said the late Fred – and its going from strength to strength. The band started 37 years ago as a community project based at Forest School, Fred started to lead the band and the rest is history. Fred played trumpet with many great musicians but his main function band were the Progressionaires with whom he can still be seen in a photo above the bar in the Drill Hall. The Hornbrook pub was the first regular venue, followed by a short period at the Hunters Moon but for the last 20 years the first Wednesday of every month is a red letter evening at Horsham Cricket Club for local music lovers. That is when the line up of outstanding musicians gets together to play around 25 classic numbers from Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Quincy Jones, Henry Mancini, Glenn Miller, Stan Kenton, Woody Herman and other big band aficionados. Sarah Prichard has been the band’s regular vocalist for 17 years, she has an impeccable singing style and an incomparable ability to phrase and interpret the Great American Songbook in the styles of Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee and others. If Sarah is away vocalists Dave Browne, Keith Murray and recently Gemma Nelson are pleased to step in to add variety to the programme. And – good news – the band will be back at the cricket club on Wednesday December 7 for a special Christmas concert as a tribute to Fred on what would have been his 91st birthday. The band is now led by Richard Guest, who also runs Horsham’s British Legion Dance Band, his humorous introductions are full of information about the music and he told the District Post: “I try to pick a theme making a selection from both commercial and Fred’s special arrangements which give the musicians in each section the opportunity to display their skills as an ensemble and exceptional soloists. The band are accomplished professional and semi-pro musicians, with the local talent of Andy Walker, and others such as Lead Trumpet Jan Zawada travel from as far as Portsmouth for the pleasure of performing together. Fred maintained that the rhythm
section provides the foundation for the soloists and we are privileged to have Malcolm Mortimore, Neil Boxall and Mike Lavelle holding us together”. Mike has a special interest in playing – after performing locally and watching the Band for a number of years, he was the surgeon on call at Haywards Heath’s Princess Royal Hospital when the maestro was rushed in, badly injured from a road accident. Fred pulled through and Mike became a regular with the band. Richard continues: “Peter Walker our phenomenal tenor sax played with Fred before the big band was formed and Peter’s son Sam now plays with us.” Sam says: “My father sat me down on the piano when I was four and now I teach music and play sax, flute & clarinet next to him in the band.” Fred’s son Bill played Tenor when the band was first formed but now plays Baritone sax, an instrument Fred loved to feature
Fred Woods’ Big Band is the best kept musical secret in Horsham for its unique tonal quality! Richard sums up with: “We are extremely grateful to Fred’s family who continue to support the band to ensure his legacy lives on in his music. We now play at the Nyman’s Summer Jazz events where the Big Band sound is well received and a memorial concert we held with the Horsham Borough Band in the Drill Hall in his honour last year raised over £1000 for Cancer Research and our Local Community First Responders, but finally out thanks go to our supporters at the Cricket Club where the first Wednesday is always a regular diary date.” There is a nominal charge on the door (club members are admitted free) – or there is special jazz membership for an annual subscription of just £15 for entry to all 12 concerts, an unbelievable bargain!

Youngsters show true grit in West Side Story
Photo’s by Warwickpics.com Youngsters vividly created the grit of the Sharks and Jets story when they performed Bernstein’s West Side Story musical. Pictured are scenes from the production at Towers Convent School at Upper Beeding by girls aged 14-16. Deborah Sparkes, Head of
Drama, said: “West Side Story is as relevant today as it was in 1957, when his ground-breaking score first burst on to the Broadway scene. “It was clearly apparent that the cast connected with the story, reflecting on the innate
injustice of prejudice. The age of the cast was forgotten as everyone immersed themselves in the unforgiving world of the Sharks and the Jets. The audience were taken on a roller-coaster journey; laughing, crying and ultimately, deeply moved.”

New hospice centre approved Impression of hospice site
offered the land for a hospice free providing approval was granted
We’re utterly delighted that the planning committee has approved plans for a new, state of the art hospice for hundreds of houses. Benefactor John Shemeld left £6 million towards the scheme, with the hospice needing to raise about £6 million. A spokeswoman for the hospice said: “We’re utterly delighted
Mololuwa and pals learn law from main man The Lord Chief Justice, Lord Thomas, came to Christ’s Hospital at Horsham to speak to senior pupils as part of the school’s visiting speakers programme. The school said he gave a fascinating and informative talk on ‘The Role of the Judge’ which helped to elucidate the way the criminal justice system works and how decisions are reached. And in
the question and answer session afterwards, he spoke about the independence of the judiciary and the nature of our unwritten constitution. Mololuwa Olanrewaju, 17, who is applying to read Law at Oxford, said: “It was a huge privilege to meet Lord Thomas and to gain an insight into how the legal profession works from the head of it himself.”

People needing hospice care in the Horsham area will have a new centre after councillors approved a scheme costing about £12 million. St Catherines Hospice received the news that it can build on a site at Pease Pottage, near Crawley, soon after confirming it was spending about £40,000 on changing its image an effort to raise more money and help more terminally ill people. Mid Sussex district councillors approved the application by the hospice and Thakeham developers for a hospice building and new housing estate of up to 600 homes and community facilities. Land owner Bill Bridges had
that the planning committee has approved plans for a new, state of the art hospice. It means that, alongside raising more money, we’ll be able to help more people facing death and dying and will be there for everyone who needs us, building on the great care we currently give. We can’t wait to share this news with our amazing supporters and turn this dream into a reality.” Crawley-based Catherine’s says it is transforming the way it talks about death and dying. Earlier this year the hospice was rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission. The hospice says its new “vision, mission, values, website and materials” have been completely redesigned in response to research. This showed that there is low awareness of the charity’s work and many people do not understand the care it offers, preventing people from taking up their free support. Giles Tomsett, St Catherine’s Hospice Chief Executive, said: “For those who know us, we do great work, but sadly last year too many people in our referral area died without our care. That’s too many people without support from our specialist medical and clinical teams, too many people without our tailored counselling, spiritual and practical support and too many families who could have been better cared for through such a difficult time.”

Fans help with home-seeking scouts Don’t miss out on Warm
Homes discount this Winter
Football fans from Horsham knew all about searching for a new home when they gave scouts a financial boost. The Horsham-based Brighton and Hove Albion supporters group North West Sussex Seagulls has made a £750 donation to the Henfield Scout Community Centre Building Appeal to replace a dilapidated existing building with a new home. Brighton fans had to endure travelling to Gillingham for home matches after the shock sale of the cherished Goldstone Ground in Hove, and then spent several
years watching the Seagulls at Withdean, a converted athletics stadium, before the Amex stadium opened. Committee members of the football group travelled to Henfield to meet the scout troop and make the official cheque presentation. Club secretary Mike Wilson said “This old scout hut is invaluable for scouts, cubs, beavers and others but it is now becoming rather dilapidated and a new purpose built building is desperately needed so that they continue to meet up here and thrive as a
group. A new building for the scouts will also benefit the whole Henfield community and so it was an easy choice for us to give some financial support by way of making this donation to a very worthy appeal. “The Henfield scouts have a way to go yet to achieve their goal of a new centre to house them and us Seagulls fans know all about needing a new home so are sympathetic to their cause. We wish them every success in the future as they continue along the road to raise further funds to achieve their target”.
Residents could be missing out on help with power bills. The Warm Home discount can save local people £140 off their electricity bills. Horsham district residents who receive certain benefits, or are on a low income are being urged to find out if they are eligible to get money off their energy bills. Horsham District Council is encouraging residents who may struggle to heat their homes or pay energy bills this winter to take advantage of the discount. It is a Government scheme which provides eligible households with a £140 credit to their electricity bill. Cabinet Member for Planning and Sustainability Cllr Claire Vickers, said: “This discount could be such a lifeline for eligible households that struggle with their energy bills. “Winter is a traditionally expensive time of year so I would encourage families and those eligible for this discount to contact their energy supplier as soon as possible as it is a limited offer and suppliers will close their application process once they have reached their
Government-set targets.” Our recent resident survey showed that it is not just older people who are concerned about the cost of heating their homes, increasingly we are finding working families are also concerned about keeping their homes warm enough. To take advantage of this discount contact your energy supplier. If they are enrolled on the scheme, energy suppliers will have information about the Warm Home Discount on their website, including an online application. Alternatively, call your electricity supplier direct - you will need your electricity account number to hand when making an application. For more information and advice about the Warm Home Discount please contact Arun Wellbeing on 01903 737925, info@arunwellbeing.org.uk or visit www.westsussexenergy. co.uk. Further money can be saved by switching energy suppliers, take advantage of fixed rates, direct debits and dual fuel (where you buy gas and electricity from the same provider).

changing?’ The national competition is run by the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) to encourage pupils to engage with geographical issues.
Each year, the competition receives entries from thousands of pupils from hundreds of schools. This year’s competition was an opportunity for geography pupils to explore how Britain is changing. Steve Brace, the Society’s Head of Education and Outdoor Learning, said: “This year, students explored geographical change from many different perspectives “We were incredibly impressed with the entries we received. Many focused on how Britain’s physical features are changing in response to a wide range of geographical processes, while others focused on social, cultural or political change.” Dr Rita Gardner CBE, Director of the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), said: “With humans now being recognised as the driving influence on our environment, and at a time of significant social change, it’s more important than ever that the next generation of geographers are able to identify and analyse geographical change. We’re delighted to see so many pupils considering how Britain is changing in such a thoughtful and knowledgeable way.” The Society’s Young Geographer of the Year competition recognises the best entries across four categories: Key Stage 2 (students aged 9-11); Key Stage 3 (1114); Key Stage 4 or GCSE (14-16); and Key Stage 5 or A Level (1618). Pupils in the first three categories were asked to submit an annotated diagram or poster, while A Level pupils were asked to submit a 1,500 word essay, which could include illustrations, maps or graphs. In support of the competition, the Society asked a range of individuals to outline how they think Britain is changing. Short films of their responses can be seen on the How is Britain changing? webpage. The awards were presented to the winning and highly commended pupils at an awards ceremony at the Society on Friday 25 November. The overall category winners are: 9-11 years - Isabella Green, St Paulinus Primary Catholic Voluntary Academy, North Yorkshire; 11-14 years - India Wood, St Helen and St Katharine, Oxfordshire; 14-16 years - Katie Banks, Millais School, West Sussex; 16-18 years - Hannah Thom, Skipton Girls’ High School, North Yorkshire; Rex Walford Award (new or student teachers) - Richard Sutton, Sir Frederic Osborn School, Hertfordshire. The ‘Young Geographer of the Year’ competition is run by the Society, in conjunction with Geographical magazine, and is kindly supported by Esri UK, Ordnance Survey, Stanfords, Philip’s and Cotswold Outdoors. The 2016 competition theme is linked to the Society’s work to engage the public with how Britain’s urban, rural and managed landscapes are changing, through its outdoor touring exhibition ‘Britain from the Air’ and ‘Discovering Britain’ walks, trails and views.

Not many people who’ve had a sitcom character based on their life have then gone on to write and star in their own sitcom based on their life, but that’s what’s happened with Josh Howie. Son of Lynne Franks, the inspiration for Absolutely Fabulous, Josh has decided to step out the shadows and finally make it about him, with the six-part comedy series ‘Josh Howie’s Losing It’ on BBC Radio 4, followed by a UK tour, Josh Howie’s Messed Up.Taking autobiographical comedy to the next level, the sitcom, and the tour, weave intricate curbesque plot that focuses on real events in Josh and his wife’s life, as they deal with the impending arrival of their first baby. With a knack for falling out with
people and getting into bizarre situations, Josh’s efforts to finally grow up, and be a great father and husband, invariably end in disaster. Howie is brilliantly clever, honest, utterly engaging and absolutely fearless. The Scotsman A fabulous storyteller who can make you concentrate in silence then erupt into a fit of giggles. He’s slick, he’s quick and he’s incredibly playful with words. Metro Sharply drawn self-deprecating stories, this is a very good hour. Evening Standard Performance: Friday 17 Feb, 8pm, Hawth Studio. Tickets: £9.50, available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 or by visiting: www.parkwoodtheatres. co.uk/The-Hawth

Carols By Candlelight With The Locrian Ensemble Back by popular demand, Carols By Candlelight returns to The Capitol Horsham this December, grasping the Christmas spirit through festive carols, accompanied by seasonal medleys. The Locrian Ensemble are firmly established as one of Britain’s most popular touring groups. They have a host of television and film credits to their name and have recently topped the classical charts with their playing for Debbie Wiseman’s BBCTV score of “Wolf Hall”. They enjoy “a formidable international reputation” (Evening Standard). Their Christmas show is one of the hottest tickets in their calendar. In lavish period costume, and in front of
an evocative candlelit setting, these charismatic performers perform favourites, including carols, string medleys of familiar Christmas tunes, and seasonal surprises. The ensemble are joined by the evergreen Jill Washington, West End star soprano of “Phantom of the Opera”, who sings tunes from Handel’s “Messiah” to “White Christmas”, the 12 Days of Christmas and “Walking in the Air”, accompanied by shimmering strings and thrilling harp playing. Performance: 19 December, 7.30pm. Tickets: available from The Capitol Box Office: 01403 750220 or on-line: www.thecapitolhorsham.com
Raspberry Pi Jam comes to Horsham This is not the usual morning spread for a great British breakfast; instead, Hack Horsham are popping up once again to deliver a digital spread they hope will be the toast of the town. The Raspberry Pi Jam delivers a variety pack of exciting digital and engineering demonstrations centred around the 10 million selling, British built, home computer. Founded in 2011, the Cambridge based Rasberry Pi Foundation has taken the world by storm, helping to ignite people’s passion again in computers, coding and electronics, from children to adults alike. More information on this can be accessed via the website: https://www.raspberrypi.org On December 11, between 2pm and 5pm, at the Parkside building (near the Black Jug), Hack Horsham will be hosting Horsham’s 2nd Pi Jam. This will be a free to enter event; a show and tell experience, with hands on opportunities for all ages and a number of free workshops available in coding in music, games programming and robotics. Expect to see a lot of Raspberry Pis in action from builders and innovators (from the neighbouring Egham Pi Jam) who will be joining the event. In addition, Hack Horsham’s own travelling representative, Frankie, an upsized variation on the game of Operation, will be in attendance. View a map of Horsham, one block at a time, in the world of Minecraft and discover Sonic Pi 2 music coding. The new BBC Microbits will be in
action and visitors can talk to Amazon’s Echo. Other exhibits include Arduinos, the Pi Exercise game, a green screen, a fruit piano, an age machine, Action Dinos, Pi Bots and many more. If you, or your school, would be interested in running a Code Club, then come and meet a local Star Code Club volunteer and some of its members. As an exclusive to this event, local developer, Different Cloth, will be demoing their awesome new Playstation 4 game, Drive! Drive! Drive! which is due to be released by Sony on December 13: https:// www.playstation.com/en-us/ games/drive-drive-drive-ps4/ The Pi Jam is part of a local effort from Hack Horsham, to increase inclusion for all in the economic and community benefits of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics). With the help of West Sussex County Council, Horsham District Council, local businesses and community groups, such as Reduced Hackers Limited, Red River Software, Horsham Blueprint and Visit Horsham, Hack Horsham hope this will be the first of many digitally creative events in the Horsham District area. Watch out for more events planned for 2017. If you wish to attend this free event, register for your ticket soon to avoid disappointment: http://pijamhorsham.eventbrite.co.uk For more information on Hack Horsham and their events, visit: http://www.facebook.com/hackhorsham

If you love Christmas and Tomfoolery then The Capitol Theatre has the show for you! Tomfoolery is back with a follow up to last year’s successful ‘Tomfoolery Saves Christmas’ - the even more festive, ‘Christmas Foolery’. West End and Broadway star Ramin Karimloo to visit Horsham Following a sell-out show at The London Palladium in July 2016, West End and Broadway star and musical innovator, Ramin Karimloo, will bring his unique brand, of musical theatre hits and bluegrass, to audiences across the UK throughout the new year. Ramin and The Broadgrass Band’s twelve-date ‘Lead Me Home’ tour will begin on January 12, in Milton Keynes, and end on January 29, in Bury St. Edmunds, performing at Horsham’s Capitol Theatre along the way. Olivier and Tony Award nominee, Ramin, is best known for playing leading roles in both of the West End’s longest running musicals - The Phantom and Raoul, in ‘The Phantom of the Opera’, and Jean Valjean, Enjolras,
and Marius, in ‘Les Misérables’. He also originated the role of the Phantom, in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘Love Never Dies’ and made his Broadway debut as Valjean in the 2014 revival production of ‘Les Misérables’. The 38 year old performer talked about the upcoming tour: “I am looking forward to taking our show on the road for an extended run, especially here in the UK. It’s been a few years since I’ve been able to go around the country. These will be the only UK dates before I head off back to Broadway to open the première of Anastasia.” The stunning songs Ramin performs, tell stories, regardless of their origin, and his debut EP ‘The Road To Find Out: East’ was widely acclaimed, introducing his inter-
national fans to a genre of music he has made his own: “Over the past four years, we have organically developed a unique, rootsy sound called ‘broadgrass’, which we are all very excited about. Featuring the passionate drama of musical theatre hits, original songs and covers that mean something to us in the band, it’s an eclectic show. But it’s all about the stories in the songs.” Ramin, who also plays the banjo and guitar, will perform with his band, comprising of Alan Markley, Jessie Linden, Nick Pini, Georgina Leach and Matthew Harvey. He stated: “We are all excited to visit the different cities around the UK. Each show will be unique. It will be a show like you’ve never seen or heard - a hootenanny. It’s a great night for everyone.”

Horsham ladies trouble league leaders Horsham’s Sam Stares
Photo by Nick Evans South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division 1 Horsham Ladies 0 - 1 Barnes Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter In another hard fought game – against the table toppers –
Horsham gave a spirited display, defending stoutly, earning six short corners and keeping Barnes at bay until well into the second half, when the single goal of the match denied Horsham a well-deserved share of the points. Barnes beat Horsham 3-0 in
the first game of the season and now head the table with a game in hand, but, although Horsham are seventh, the gulf was not apparent, the umpires’ assessor praising them for their marked progress in the few weeks since last seeing them in action. Horsham had a goal disallowed in the sixth minute when their first short corner was hit above the backboard. Seven Barnes short corners were nullified up to the break, including a gritty Joy How save off the line with the keeper committed elsewhere. A quarter of an hour into the second half Sam Stares broke through in a long run but Horsham were unable to convert the resulting short before pressure from Barnes saw them score from their eleventh set piece, which Horsham uncharacteristically failed to clear. Horsham kept pushing with three more short corners and came tantalisingly close but just could not equalise, new coach, former England international Lewis Morgan, telling the District Post: “We’ve had a really tough end to the first half of our season but we’re showing very encouraging signs. We’ve got some new young faces in the side, so I’ve been analysing our options and we’re close to deciding our best starting line-up. Perhaps we need a striker but I’m confident that we can continue to give a good account of ourselves.” The ladies’ next league game following the annual Christmas and New Year break will be a trip to third placed Maidenhead on January 28. Meanwhile, they will be competing in the indoor tournament ahead of a cup game at East Grinstead on January 7.
Defending champions Hawks back on top U14 Hawks are top of the division
U14 Horsham Hawks 83 – 72 U14 Shoreham Spartans U14 Horsham Hawks 75 – 47 U14 SRWA Bears The reigning champions Horsham Hawks have returned to the top of the U14 Sussex League Table with wins over the Shoreham Spartans and SRWA Bears. Despite going behind early on in
an energetic home fixture against Shoreham it was the Hawks who finished the first quarter with a 12-5 run to edge ahead 17-11 with well taken scores from Fin Bennet and Miguel Venturini. Shoreham pulled the deficit back to 24-22 in the second quarter before the Hawks raised the intensity and led by Josh Tavolieri and Josh Lea-Clayton the Hawks blitzed the Spartans 18-5 over
the course of five minutes giving Horsham a commanding 42-27 halftime lead. After a tight third quarter where neither team gave an inch, the Spartans put together a 13-4 run late in the fourth period reducing the Horsham advantage to 79-72. The Hawks however sustained their composure with scores in the final seconds from LeaClayton and Harry Rose to seal an 83-72 home win. The Hawks then made it four straight wins with a dominant defensive display against the Bears while holding the hosts to just 30 points after three quarters as the Hawks took a 58-30 advantage into the final quarter. Strong rebounding from Josh Mason-Lovat, Oliver Brooker and Andre Gordon coupled with patient and fearless attacking basketball continued to break down the Bears as the Hawks secured a well-deserved 75-47 victory. Head coach David Clayton said, “This was our best defensive display of the season against a very organised and disciplined Bears team. The team should feel very proud and encouraged that all of the hard work and dedication shown in training is paying off as we move up to top spot in the league.”

Car problems disrupt Palmers first F1 season Formula 1 Dave Snith - Sports Editor Renault Sport Formula One Team concluded its first Formula 1 Championship season at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix with seventeenth position for Southwater’s Jolyon Palmer and an early retirement from teammate Kevin Magnussen. Starting from P15 on the grid, and after making a great start, Palmer was up to eleventh position at the end of the first lap. However he could not maintain the pace as tyre degradation saw him slip back and he was then hit with a five-second penalty for contact he made with Carlos Sainz. The Renault Sport Formula One Team ended the season in ninth position in the Constructors’ Championship with Jolyon Palmer eighteenth in the Drivers’ Championship. An obviously disappointed Palmer said, “I had a really good
start - up to eleventh - and was keeping pace with the Williams’ for a while, but unfortunately the tyre degradation was unbelievable for us. I was trying to fight with everyone through the race but I had no grip which makes it very difficult. I tried to pass Carlos as he left a gap, but he braked a bit early and I had no grip to slow down. It’s a real shame.” Renault Team Principal Fred Vasseur commented, “That was not the Grand Prix we wanted to end our season. Jolyon’s great start didn’t translate to a great finish come the chequered flag. Today’s result should not detract from all the progress made over the last year and we will be in a far better position to fight for more points next season.” Jolyon Palmer has retained his drive with Renault’s F1 team for the 2017 season where he will be joined by German driver Nico Hülkenberg, who is replacing Kevin Magnussen.
Boro slip to second after tight defeat London 3 South East Folkestone 33 - 29 Pulborough Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Pulborough started their season with eight straight wins, but have since lost their last three games – one in the cup and two in the league, yet, after trailing 23-3 at half time they fought back strongly to worry Folkestone by creaming the second half 26-10. Pulborough Head Coach Clayton Saunders told the District Post: “We were too conservative in the first half – adventurous rugby is our strength and we played to that after the interval, when we displayed the most entertaining rugby that I’ve seen from the club. Folkestone are tough to beat over in Kent but we
put some amazing tries past them after the break, including a stunner when Frazer Oliphant-Hope ran out to the left and then kicked across to the right. Owain McLoughlin got two tries and Al Ryan and Jamie Curtis one apiece, Frazer obliging with three conversions and a penalty. We’ve had 11 games in a row so we’re quite grateful for a breather tomorrow (Saturday).” Boro are on equal points (41) with Thanet Wanderers but are now second because of the Kent side’s superior points difference. Boro resume their league campaign on Saturday December 10 with a home game against another Kent side - ninth in the table Park House from Bromley, who have won three of their ten matches to date.

Golden time for Horsham’s Rampant Old Colfeians overwhelm Horsham Sports Acro gymnasts Horsham’s Sports Acro squad claimed 16 gold medals
Horsham’s Men’s 4 who won gold
London 2 South East Old Colfeians 74 - 12 Horsham Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter
In their first seven games Old Colfeians scored a total of 170 points, but they notched up 133 in their two encounters prior to the Horsham match, during which they remained on fire throughout, with 12 tries and seven conversions. George Palmer got over the line for Horsham in the first half, converted by skipper Tom Johnson, but the hosts led 36-7 at the break. Nick Bell got an unconverted try during a period of Horsham domination early in the second half and Horsham rang the changes with substituGrade 4 competition. As the day progressed Horsham took more gold medals through Georgia Brock, Ella-Louise Nelson and Lily Garrard in the 11 – 16 FIG Women’s Group, Zoe Schubert and Zoe Gaudiano in the 12 – 18 FIG Women’s pair. These were followed by another seven gold medals from Myla Kettell, Ella Dronfield and Alex Rogers competing in the 12 – 18 FIG Women’s Group, 12 – 18 FIG Mixed Pair Benjamin Ratcliffe and Naalie O’Hara and 13 – 19 FIG Women’s Pair Aimee Tolhurst and Madeline Kent. Just narrowly missing out, but also earning a medal, were Grade 6 Women’s Group Manami Imada, Macy Lawes and Alexis O’Hara and 11 – 16 FIG Woman’s Pair Ma-
tilda Tester and Phoebe Rochead, who all took away bronze. Horsham’s head Sports Acro coach Ali Harmer said, “I am very proud of the squad today, not just those who medalled, but all of our gymnasts who competed. They all continue to represent us superbly with both their talent and their attitude.” The squad now prepares for two big competitions next year where some of them will compete back in Sittingbourne in March at the qualifiers for the National Finals, to be held later in the year, while the senior FIG group will take part in the prestigious Pat Wade Classic at Stoke on Trent’s Fenton Manor Sports Complex, also in March.

team steadily climbing the table. Chesworth Rovers U13 2 - 1 Crawley Utd U13 In a league match that went to the final whistle it was Chesworth who came out on top. Crawley fought hard and never gave up the chase after Tom Miller opened the scoring following a Harry Sutton in-swinging corner. Crawley left it to the final minute to equalise when a long shot dropped under the bar. With the points seemingly shared Tom Miller scored again right on the final whistle to keep Chesworth in the title race.
Sports Acrobatic Gymnastics Dave Snith - Sports Editor Horsham Gymnastic Centre’s Sports Acrobatic squad competed at the Regional Championships at Swallows Leisure Centre in Sittingbourne against hundreds of gymnasts from nineteen top clubs in West and East Sussex, Surrey and Kent, and came away with 16 Regional Champions. It proved to be another very successful competition for the squad that continues to improve and achieve increasingly better results. The newly formed Men’s Group of Dominic Smith, Dominic Goddard, Devon Thomas and Jackson Laing started things off by taking the gold medal in the

They lost their first game to a strong Cuckfield team but bounced back to win against Crawley. tions but thereafter it was all Old Colfeians, whose defence have only conceded 124 points all season, a record only bettered by runaway leaders Medway. Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker told the District Post: “It was a tough day at the office for us. We didn’t play to our potential against a team who were at the top of their game with big ball carriers getting over the gain line repeatedly. Although we had a good spell at the start of the second half the last 20 points all came from them.” Horsham drop to seventh with 26 points and are back in action on Saturday December 10, when they entertain Deal & Betteshanger. The east Kent side are eighth, six points behind Horsham - with four wins from their ten games.
YM suffer heavy defeat at Haywards Heath YM were well beaten
SCFL Premier Division Haywards Heath 4 – 1 Horsham YMCA Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor
Despite getting off to a great start, by scoring virtually straight from the kick off, Horsham YM crashed to another heavy defeat after conceding four goals for the second match running. After the early shock, promotion hopefuls Haywards Heath controlled much of the match putting in 25 goal attempts against YM’s 7 and only some superb stops by ‘keeper Sam Smith prevented the score line from being even greater. Just 15 seconds after kick off YM gave themselves a major boost when Nick Sullivan found the top corner of home ‘keeper James Shaw’s goal. That however was about as good as it got for visitors YM. Heath put continued pressure on YM’s goal and got their reward by finally beating Smith in the 25th minute. Kane Louis
found Trevor McCreadie who turned well to find the bottom corner. Just before the break ex Horsham striker McCreadie gave his side the lead when he was quickest to react to a blocked effort from Luc Doherty and smashed the ball past Smith. The second half was much the same with Heath having most of the ball and Smith doing his utmost to keep them at bay. Despite having some great efforts and play thwarted by Smith the third Heath goal when it came was somewhat lucky as Docherty’s in-swinging corner hit the far post and went in. Three became four a minute later when the impressive Docherty grabbed his second of the match by placing a superb chip over Smith into the far corner. Heath continued to press as YM settled for damage limitation and the superb Smith in goal was called upon again a number of times as YM saw the match out without further denting their goals against figure.

Late Boswell goal gives Hornets a point

Darren Boswell celebrates his late equaliser
Photo by John Lines Ryman League Division One South Horsham 1 – 1 Hastings United Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor Darren Boswell returned from illness to hit a very late equaliser and keep Horsham’s record of scoring in every Ryman League match this season intact while more importantly ensuring another point towards consolidating their safe mid-table position. In truth this clash with inform
Hastings United was not the best of matches but the dramatic late winner sent the Hornets faithful home with the feeling that the draw was as good as a win. Again however Horsham looked at times very shaky at the back and on another day the recently free scoring United could, and probably should, have scored more than their solitary goal. The Hornets were fortunate to not go behind in the first few seconds when after a weak punch from Josh Pelling Harry Stannard headed against the underside of the bar and despite United’s
appeals that the ball had crossed the line referee Knight decided it had not. It was from some more indecisive and erratic defending that Hastings took the lead. With 19 minutes played Jack Harris was left unmarked to find Stannard whose hopeful ball into the box was put into his own net by Lewis Hyde. The half continued as it started with both sides creating very little in the way of a threat and the visitors took their slender lead into the break. Two early efforts from Tom Lawley and Scott Kirkwood respectively showed a little more intent from Horsham but United also improved their efforts on goal with Jack Harris, Frannie Collin and Kiernan Hughes-Mason all going close. With United having the better chances Ollie Rowe crashed a header against the bar as Horsham again escaped going two goals down. As it seemed the visitors were destined to go back down to the coast with all three points Horsham put in their best spell of the match in the closing 10 minutes, and grabbed the late equaliser. In the last minute of added time Tiago Andrade was fouled on the edge of the area. Lawley tapped the free kick to Boswell whose low shot found the net past ‘Keeper Ryan Nicholls who, after getting his hand to the ball, will feel he should have saved it. Not a great match, not a great Horsham performance, but the resilience the team now has to dig points out of matches that in the past few Ryman seasons would have been fruitless, is certainly undeniable. After Horsham’s match against Three Bridges was the victim of a frozen pitch and a late postponement on Tuesday evening the Hornets now visit 10th placed Walton Casuals on Saturday (Tomorrow Saturday 3). Horsham are currently in 12th spot, 8 points behind Casuals.
Horsham Tri Club win Three Molehills Relay Horsham Tri Club’s Alex Smith, Tom Payne and Jamie Newton
Triathlon The gruelling Three Molehills Relay is run at Denbies Wine
Estate in Dorking and consists of three legs; this year’s event was on a particularly cold and windy day but to afford some relief the
rain held off. The first leg raced is the strenuous 270 steps to the top of Box Hill totalling 4.5 miles this year run by Alex Smith, the second is the gentler but longer run of 6 miles to Norbury Park, taken on by Tom Payne, followed by the shortest leg to Ranmore Common tackled by Jamie Newton. Smith quickly gained a lead and this was built upon over the 3 legs with the team finishing first, over 13 minutes up on the second placed team. Horsham Tri Club member Michael Dargue also completed the 14.4 mile race as a solo entry and finished a superb 14th out of a field of 171 competitors.
YM stop the rot with a point at Eastbourne Town SCFL Premier Division Eastbourne Town 1 – 1 Horsham YMCA Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor League parity was maintained between the two teams on Tuesday evening as Horsham YMCA’s draw at Eastbourne Town left both teams locked together in the table in 9th and 10th places respectively, both with 25 points from their 17 games played. After the recent two heavy league defeats suffered by YM they battled well in a match played on a hard frosty pitch in bitterly cold conditions; being pegged back 8 minutes from time when a most welcome victory was on the cards. The match was a pretty tepid affair throughout and both teams were hoping for 3 points and a boost for what has been for them both a very stop
start season so far. The draw therefore was not the answer to either side although YM will feel happier with the away point. Dan Evans popped up in the 41st minute to give YM the lead and they took the narrow advantage into the break. The late first half goal failed to raise the match in terms of a spectacle but another goal was always likely with the pitch becoming increasingly difficult in the plummeting temperature. YM must have thought they had done enough to take all the points but were left disappointed in the 82nd minute when Jason Taylor grabbed the equaliser to make it in the end a fair point a piece. It could be said of course YM had one eye on Saturday’s (Tomorrow December 3) FA Vase 3rd round clash with Devonshire side Buckland Athletic at Gorings Mead; and who could blame them.
Luckless Horsham battle on despite early deficit South League – Premier – Division 1 Horsham Men’s 1st XI 1 - 4 Spencer Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Depleted Horsham had an excellent second half but were unable to claw back a three goal deficit posted in the first 13 minutes of the game. Attacks at both ends drew saves until Spencer, from Earlsfield, south west London, netted on the rebound, then after two short corners, the second of which needed two prostrate saves, the ball ran kindly, facilitating a quality strike into the top right corner of the goal. Worse then followed when Spencer converted their third short corner with another rebound strike. Then, John Burroughs ran through but his cross was unsupported and Horsham possession became limited and non- threatening, while Spencer comfortably ahead, just needing to play steadily and take opportunities when presented. Shortly after the break Horsham failed to clear for one of the wait-
ing opposition to fire in from close range. Many sides would have been dispirited when 4 nil down but to Horsham’s great credit they kept competing. A Joey Humphreys attack earned a short corner, but the strike and rebound were averted. Then Spencer drew the best from Horsham keeper Andy Isaacs before a Horsham breakaway foray fed Sam Gill to smash the ball home. Further Horsham attacks ensued, the second half honours finishing even at 1-1, but there was to be no coming back from Spencer’s commanding early lead. Horsham Team Manager Al Campbell told the District Post: “They were well organised, whereas we were short of players, and everything fell on their sticks in the first half with rebound goals. But, we really came into our own with a strong second half - our best display for weeks.” Tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham travel to seventh in the table unknown quantity Milton Keynes, who lost to Old Cranleighans last week. Horsham remain in penultimate position but the bottom half of the table is tightly bunched.
