A new book into the sometimes spooky world of Sussex folklore is published by Storringtonbased South Downs Society. Author and historian Chris Hare attempts to separate historical fact from fantasy in “The Secret Shore: tales of folklore and smuggling from Sussex and Hampshire.” It is a result of a two-year long Heritage Lottery funded project and is a companion to the previously released CD, South Coast Songs and Shanties. Chris led a team of volunteer researchers during the summer and autumn of 2015 who interviewed people about the folk tales and superstitions. The results of this survey were set against the ground-breaking research undertaken in Sussex by pioneering folklorist, Charlotte Latham in the 1860s. In his book, Chris is able to show how many old beliefs that Charlotte Latham thought were dying out in her day, still survive in our own times. For instance, many people still wish magpies a good day for fear of inviting bad luck if they omit to do so. There are numerous stories still in circulation about mysterious tunnels, just as there were 160 years ago. And some of our local residents still smash their spoons
through their empty egg shells for fear that witches will put to sea in them if they fail to do so. Chris begins his book by looking at the life of Charlotte Latham and explains why she is so important to the study of folklore. Her work on West Sussex superstitions was the first paper to be published by the newly-formed Folklore Society in 1878. She was born at Ashington and spent much of her adult life at Fittleworth, where her husband was the local vicar. Her guesses and assumptions as to the origin and purpose of local folklore have often been borne out by modern research. Chris looks at many diverse areas of folklore, including ghost stories, witchcraft, omens of good and bad luck, old remedies for illness and charms to ward off the effects of evil. claims today for ‘UFOs.’ The book includes some wonderful illustrations from the time of smuggling and the days of Charlotte Latham’s research. The Secret Shore: tales of folklore and smuggling from Sussex and Hampshire, is also available, price £10 from the South Downs Society’s website – www.southdownssociety.org.uk/shop or from local libraries and museums. Some illustrations from thebook are shown on this page.

The association collaborates annually with the RBA to provide a platform for aspiring young artists to show their work. Nationwide and including the near continent, local NADFAS societies are invited to select the very best A Level artwork from students in their area and to submit that work to the RBA for consideration for selection in their Spring Exhibition in the Mall Galleries and in the Rising StarsExhibition, which will be held at the Royal Overseas League in St James Street, London. This year 284 works were submitted of which 22 will be exhibited. Farlington’s Head of Art, Rosalyn Sprey, who taught Jacqueline in the sixth form, said: “Jacqueline is an exceptionally talented student with incredible focus and creative awareness. It has been a joy to teach her and see her develop to such a high standard, and we are thrilled that this is being recognised with such a prestigious award.” Louise Higson, Farlington headmistress, said: “We are very proud of Jacqueline. businesses across the Horsham district up to September 2017. Anyone hoping to set up a new business, grow existing business, or take on an apprentice may apply for a share of these grant funds. For small business grants, people can apply for up to £2,000 which they will need to match
with additional funds. They must be able to demonstrate how the project will develop or establish your business and what difference it will make. A business that wants to take on an apprentice can apply for up to £1,500 to match the funding that the Government makes available so that there will be a much reduced cost to a business for taking on an apprentice. Cllr Gordon Lindsay, Cabinet Member for Local Economy said: “This is a good opportunity for people who have been thinking about starting or growing a small business or taking on an apprentice, but have been worried about the costs involved. “We are hoping that businesses will take advantage of this grant scheme in order to make that important small investment in equipment or people which until now they have not been able to fund.” To make an application visit: http://thinkhorshamleap.site For more information go to https://www.horsham.gov.uk/ businesspages/Business-Development/business-supportand-opportunities/informationfor-businesse and to watch the promotional film go to: http:// socsi.in/wjNdf . Susan’s hard work gets rewarded The presentation
The season of goodwill was the perfect time for a Henfield woman help a cause that is very special to her. Susan Swan, aged 71 has donated £500 on behalf of company Amway to support the good work and tireless commitment of St Barnabas House, a hospice in Worthing. She volunteers at the hospice’s shop in Henfield. St Barnabas House has been providing hospice care for local people and their families for more than 40 years, both at the hospice and in patients’ own homes. Their charity shop in Henfield, West Sussex, raises money from the sales of donated items, which
go towards care costs. Susan has been a supporter of the charity since May 2007, when the charity first opened its retail shop on Henfield high street. Susan works as a volunteer every Thursday morning at shop, and for the rest of the week, runs her own direct-selling enterprise as an Amway Business Distributor. Susan was one of many Amway Business Distributors across Europe who was given the opportunity to apply for a monetary donation from Amway, one of the leading family-owned consumer goods companies worldwide that sells high quality products in the categories of beauty, wellness and home care through independent distributors. The 2016 initiative ‘One by One Amway Volunteering Campaign’ that is about helping people live better lives has awarded financial donations to 65 Amway Business Distributors across Europe for their volunteering initiatives this December. The criterion was to demonstrate the impact and role each Distributor plays to improve their own communities. Despite the tough competition, Susan’s application stood out and General Manager Andrew Smith from Amway UK Ltd is delighted to see Susan be one of three candidates in the UK rewarded for their selfless charitable efforts. He said: “Community is a word that is very important to our
business. Our Amway Business Distributors establish strong roots in their own home town and build up their own enterprise by reaching out to individuals seeking our quality products. Individuals like Susan really stand out because they genuinely want to play an active role and make a difference on a local level. Susan carves out time from her busy schedule each week to support those in need and her application really struck a chord with the judging panel.” Susan said: “I really enjoy volunteering and meeting new people, so when St Barnabas House announced that they were opening a retail shop in 2007, I jumped at the chance to help. It is important to play our small part when we can and for me, St Barnabas House really resonated as a cause as it brings much needed support and services to the region. “We have a great team here in the shop, guided by Kylie Yates, the shop manager, so it doesn’t really feel like work because it’s such a friendly place to be.” Jan Harper, Head of Retail at St Barnabas said: “We’d like to thank Amway for their very generous donation. It is thanks to the generosity of businesses and individuals in our local community that we can continue to provide our specialist care services”.

Students solve murder riddle
Pregnant women reminded about their “jabs” too Pregnant women in West Sussex are being encouraged to get a flu jab. This follows an appeal for mums and dads to make sure their children have jabs. The vaccine, which is free for expectant mums, protects against the virus. It is safe for both mums-to-be and their baby. West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing, Christine
A group of ten Year 11 students solved a murder mystery at St John’s College at Oxford University. Student James Brew prepared this report for the Weald school at Billingshurst: “The day was incredibly informative, and we were able to interview several of the students about their experience so far at Oxford, what they are studying and the interview process. We had a tour of the college, during which we viewed the accommodation block, library,
chapel and open space areas. We also listened to an interesting talk on the application process and courses offered at Oxford. We were all extremely impressed with the facilities, and when we were taken into the main college library and shown first-edition archaic books, everyone was amazed at the condition they were in and had their mobiles out to take photos. Walking through the corridors, it was hard to ignore the history and beautiful architecture. After a buffet lunch, we took part in a chemistry taster session.
Field said: “I would encourage all mums-to-be not to put off getting the flu vaccination. This simple preventative step can stop you getting this highly infectious virus which can pose a risk to you and your baby.” Unlike the common cold, flu can be serious and cause complications for more vulnerable groups. The flu vaccine is available for free to vulnerable groups, including pregnant women.
We extended our knowledge from lessons by using their modern technology to solve a murder case, using chromatography methods demonstrated by post-graduate students. The trip gave us a great insight into the best university in the world. It also gave us a glimpse of what to expect in the not too distant future for whichever university we might apply to after we leave The Weald. Additionally, it inspired us all to work harder for our upcoming exams, in order to achieve the grades required for a Russell group university.”

Vicar praises talent of young Christmas singers and musicians
Good cops, says police report Sussex Police is ‘good’ at keeping people safe and reducing crime, says a report. HM Inspectorate of Constabulary’s latest inspection has also assessed the force as ‘good’ at treating all of the people it serves with fairness and respect, ensuring its workforce behaves ethically and lawfully, and treating its workforce with fairness and respect. Deputy Chief Constable Bernie O’Reilly, commenting on the Inspectorate’s PEEL Legitimacy report said: “I’m pleased that the HMIC highlights that officers and staff understand the importance of treating all people they serve with fairness and respect. Our decisions and actions are underpinned by the Code of Ethics.
“It is vital that people have trust and confidence in the integrity of police officers, staff and volunteers, who show their commitment in addressing the concerns of the communities we serve every single day. “By working together and actively seeking people’s feedback, some whose trust in policing is limited, we have a good understanding of local issues and can gauge satisfaction levels.” “The force has drawn praise from the HMIC for the way it clarifies the standards and behaviours expected of all those who work for Sussex Police. Where officers fall below the behaviours expected, the force publishes outcomes of disciplinary cases so there can be no doubt as to
what is unacceptable. DCC O’Reilly added: “I am proud of everyone in Sussex Police who gives their best, and as the report noted we are proactive in promoting their wellbeing as they work hard to keep the community safe and reduce crime, listening to people’s concerns and addressing their issues.” Sussex PCC Katy Bourne said: “I am reassured by this HMIC Legitimacy Inspection that Sussex Police is very mindful that it needs the support and trust of the public in order to operate effectively. The ‘Good’ rating across all measures in the latest report shows a clear commitment to ethical and professional behaviour

A vicar praised the talent of youngsters who performed at a Christmas concert. Canon Guy Bridegwater and St Mary’s Parish Church, Horsham on the Causeway in Horsham, hosted the Collyer’s college annual Christmas Concert. The packed congregation enjoyed an evening of festive music and readings by students and staff. Mr Bridgewater, a governor at Collyer’s, told the congregation: “I’m filled with great gratitude and pride. It is amazing to see the ability our young people have.” On arrival, soloist Lizzie Britton, accompanied by organist Jeremy Weaver, the choir and the Congregation, performed ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ and “O Little Town of Bethlehem”. All then enjoyed a reading by Catherine Bleach of Isaiah 9:6. The Collyer’s Choir, headed by Lizzie Britton, entranced everyone with ‘O Come O Emmanuel’, ‘Walking in the Air’ and Gaudete’. The congregation then joined in for ‘Good Wenceslas’ and was treated to a reading by Clare Packham of Mathew 1: 18-25, The Birth of Christ’. The Vocal Sextet, comprising Lizzie Britton, Clare Packham, Jennifer Inglis-Taylor, Nathaniel Thomas-Atkin; Louis Timperley and Oliver Whorwood performed ‘Do Not Be Afraid’. The congregation then gave a rousing rendition of ‘O Coma All Ye Faithful’, followed by what the school called a simply breath-taking performance of Fantaisie Sur un Theme de l’Opera “Eugene Onegin” by gifted harpist Jacqueline Lo. Deputy Principal Steve Nicholls said: “Wow. Breathtaking performances allround. Stunning. Well done everyone.” “These ludicrously gifted performers have certainly
produced an outstanding Collyer’s concert to live long in the memory. I’ve been lucky enough to attend these concerts for over 30 years and this was certainly up there with the very, very best. Enjoyable and uplifting from start to finish. ‘Tis the season to be Colly!” As the evening drew to a close, Collyer’s Principal Sally Bromley gave a reading of ‘A Child’s Christmas in Wales’; the congregation was then invited to sing ‘Hark the Herald Angels Sing’. Canon Guy Bridgewater, a governor at Collyer’s, told the congregation: “I’m filled with great gratitude and pride. It is amazing to see the ability our young people have. Thank-you so much to everyone for coming and a big thank-you to our students!” Other stars on the night included Musical Director Stephen Brundish, Dan Page the assistant Musical Director and Keith Burton and Eddie Robinson, who provided valuable technical support. Collyer’s Linda MacLeman and Hannah Roberts worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make the event possible, while Clare Ruaux and her students from the Richard Collyer Union took a collection at the concert, to raise funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital. At the end of the evening more than £200 had been raised. Collyer’s Principal, Sally Bromley said: “A huge thanks to Canon Guy Bridgewater, governor at Collyer’s, for allowing us to hold our concert at St Mary’s again this year. It is a Collyer’s tradition not to be missed. I was immensely proud of the students’ performances. What gifted young people! The audience was visibly moved when Collyer’s Choir, with soloist Lizzie Britton, sang O Come O Come Emmanuel and mesmerised by Jacqueline Lo’s performance on harp.”

Residents face paying more as council loses £1.6 million phil dennett News Editor
Residents face the prospect of being hit in the pocket because of a £1.6 million hole in local budgets caused by the Government “passing the buck” by withdrawing financial support to Horsham District Council. Horsham councillors must decide in February how to fill the gap. Three of the suggestions to be considered are a council tax increase, a £1.50 all day Sunday and bank holiday charge in Horsham town car parks, and changes in waste collection service. The shock news came among what the council called “a flurry of ministerial announcements” just before the start of the Christmas break. It has brought about a disagreement between the Conservativedominated district council and the
Conservative controlled Government over the cuts. One councillor says the Government has moved the problem of cutting spending to local councils. The Government confirmed that within two years Horsham will lose all the £1.6m in revenue support grant it currently receives from central Government through taxation and it will need to become totally self- sufficient. This reduction in grant is in addition to cuts totalling £1.1m over the past three years. Leader of the council Cllr Ray Dawe said: "We have one of the lowest council tax levels in the country. At the same time we have been able to maintain a high level of service to our residents. “However, while we shall persist with trying to find further efficiency savings and minimise any increased charges, the options for reducing costs are becoming more limited. “Effectively, in his aim of reducing the national deficit, the Chancellor has simply moved a problem on to local councils. What is clear is that while the council has a sound
Top cop sslams ams “b “blatant” atant” drink drivers phil dennett News Editor
Drivers showed blatant disregard of drink-driving laws despite a publicised police blitz. That is the view of a top police officer after nearly 200 people were arrested in the crackdown between December 1 and the New Year period. Some drivers face court appearances this month and others have already been before magistrates for alleged drink or drug-related driving offences. Chief Inspector Andy Gooch said: "The volume of arrests we have made in Sussex demonstrates the blatant disregard a lot of people have for the law. "At a time when most people are celebrating and spending time with their loved ones, it is disappointing to see that a number of motorists continue to ignore our safety advice.” Several drivers from the Horsham district were among those arrested and their names have been publicised as part of the crackdown. More motorists were arrested in Sussex on New Year's Day, immediately after the conclusion of the Christmas 2015 crackdown on drink
and drug-drivers under Operation Dragonfly, which was Surrey and Sussex Police's Christmas crackdown on drink and drug-driving. Phil Nicholas, Chief Inspector of the Sussex Police Roads Policing Unit, said: "I feel the campaign has been a success in that we have arrested a large number of people who may otherwise have been involved in an accident or ended up causing fatalities on the roads in Sussex. "However, it is extremely disappointing that some people have not taken heed of the message, as is reflected in the statistics with 21more people being arrested for drink and drug-driving related offences in the first three days of 2016 - 10 on New Year's Day alone. It shows that this campaign is not aimed solely at targeting drink and drug-drivers at Christmas; it is a year-round strategy and we will continue to bring offenders to justice." Of the 182 arrests made in December, a total of 27 people have been convicted, and a further 72 have been charged and are due to appear in court. People in Sussex can text officers on 65999 with the details of people they suspect of drink or drug driving or visit www.operationcrackdown.co.uk. You can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or visit http:// www.crimestoppers-uk.org/.
Search for mystery lottery winner winning ticket before the prize claim deadline, then the prize money, plus all the interest it has generated, will go to help National Lottery-funded projects across the UK. A National Lottery spokesperson said: “We’re eager to find the mystery ticket-holder and unite them with their winnings – this amazing prize could really make a huge difference to somebody’s life. We’re urging everyone who bought a EuroMillions ticket in this area to check their old tickets again or look anywhere a missing ticket could be hiding. “Try checking in the pockets of clothing, in wallets, bags and down the back of the sofa – someone out there could literally be sitting on a fortune. We have the champagne on ice and our fingers crossed that the lucky winner comes forward to claim their win.” To help jog EuroMillions players’ memories about what was happening around the date of the draw in question, rugby fans may remember that October 10 saw the final games in England’s World Cup pool. Whilst Australia beat Wales 15-6 to top the group, England’s emphatic 60-3 win over Uruguay at least restored some pride after a lacklustre World Cup campaign. Anyone who believes they have the winning ticket for any of the National Lottery draws within the 180-

Someone who bought a lottery ticket in Horsham is holding a ticket worth a small fortune, say organisers. At the time the District Post went to press the lucky holder of a EuroMillions prize worth £58,838.90 had yet to make a claim. Organisers say the winner is holding a ticket bought in the Horsham District. It could be a local person or someone from further afield who happened to be in the town. If they do not claim the money by early April the money will be lost to them. Earlier this week National Lottery players were urged to check and double-check their tickets for the chance to claim the prize. The holder matched the five main numbers and no Lucky Star numbers in the EuroMillions draw on October 9 last year. The winning EuroMillions numbers on that date were 1, 40, 42, 43, 47 and the Lucky Star numbers were 9 and 11. The lucky ticket-holder has until April 6 to claim their prize.. Gang jailed for massive fraud
Man jailed for horr Phil Dennett News Editor
The gang from left to right: Wickens, Cavanagh, Bryson, Jones, Suckling
A Billingshurst man involved in systematic sexual abuse of a young woman with two others is now serving 10 years in prison. Joseph Noye, 27, of Plaistow Road, was found guilty on one count of oral rape, one count of sexual assault and one count of criminal damage. He was sentenced at Guildford Crown Court. The court heard that the victim, a woman in her 20s, was abused over a period of five days back in October 2014. The abuse began when a man, who was unknown to the victim, entered the property under false pretences. This man was later identified as Charlie Jones, 28, who received 20 years jail. Once inside the property Jones became controlling and committed a series of sexual offences against the woman. The abuse continued over the following days with Jones inviting various men to the property where they too committed serious offences against the woman who police say received serious internal injuries as a result. The victim gained the courage to call police on the fifth day of abuse
and Jones was arrested a short time later. He was charged and remanded in custody. A further six men were arrested in the days which following with charges being brought against them in December 2014. They were then released on conditional bail until the trial at Guildford Crown Court which and lasted 12 weeks from last September.

financial position for the short term, unless we take action now as the Government grant disappears, we shall have a huge deficit in the future. Councillors will therefore need to discuss a medium term strategy of how to tackle this when
they meet for our annual budget meeting in February 2016." At a full council meeting before Christmas the council confirmed its commitment to a new £12.3m leisure centre at Broadbridge Heath and in reaching that decision coun-
cillors were very aware that such a reduction in Government grant was probable. At their meeting, it was made clear to them that the council will need to look at how it can bridge this huge loss in government support.

Romantic Sarah, 26, recalled their first meeting and said: “We met on January 28 in 2010. “Kieran came into the local leisure centre for a gym induction, which I carried out. He tells me he fell in love with me the moment we met. From then we would see each other when he came in for workouts. “We had bad snow that year and I needed somewhere to stay. Kieran kindly offered and I stayed at his place as friends, where we started to get to know each other. “Facebook then connected us after an exchange of phone numbers and the rest is history. “We have now been together for just over six years, Kieran is the kindest, most caring person I know and we love each other unconditionally.“ Kieran, 27, from Billingshurst, is a retained fire fighter for Billingshurst and works at Anco storage, a local family-run shelfing and racking company. Sarah, from Aldwick, said: “We are looking to purchase our first home this year and can’t wait to spend the rest of our lives together.”

Leap Year proposer Sarah Baldwin reached the heights of passion when she proposed to her fireman boyfriend. Secretive Sarah hid away at the top of a practice tower as Kieran Hatchard, climbed towards her in what he thought was a routine evening ladder drill. As Kieran reached the top Sarah sprang her February 29 surprise by boldly producing an engagement ring and asking him: “Will you marry me?” Sarah went down on one knee for the proposal, at the top of the tower, and presented Kieran with a palladium wedding band from Gold Arts in Chichester. This was followed by a live appearance from local singer and performer Paul Brigstock, who sang the Jason Mraz hit “I won’t give up” to the happy couple. The song contains The lines: “I won’t give up on us. Even if the skies get rough. I’m giving you all my love. I’m still looking up.” Afterwards it was celebrations all round at the Bill-

the new drug-driving law. Between March 2015 and February 29, officers made a total of 295 drug-driving related arrests in Sussex. Later she pleaded guilty at Brighton Magistrates Court to driving with 57mg of benzoylecgonine per litre of blood in her system. The legal limit is 50mg. She was disqualified from driving for 30 months, and ordered to pay a £150 criminal courts charge, a £110 fine, £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge. In March 2015 the Government approved prescribed limits for a number of legal and illegal drugs for which motorists can be tested against. This makes it a criminal offence to drive if you have certain controlled drugs above a specific limit in your blood. Since February last year, police have also had a new tool at their disposal to crackdown on drugdrivers. The roadside Drug Wipe testing kit, as used on Keating, takes a swab from the motorist and can detect cocaine or cannabis use within 10 minutes. Officers, working in connection with the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership, are now reminding drivers of the dangers associated with drug-driving and the impact of such actions. Sergeant Phil Badman, of the Surrey and Sussex Police Roads Policing Unit, said: “The consequences of drug-driving can be lethal. Substances - both legal and illegal - can seriously impair your ability to drive, which could cause a
car, on the A23 at Pyecombe. Police say Keating, who was driving her nine-year-old son to school, was also witnessed by an officer swerving between lanes and careering into a grass bank, causing a tyre to burst, before turning sharply into Pyecombe service station. A drug wipe was carried out and the 44-year-old, of Kennedy Road in Horsham, tested positive for cocaine.

serious or even a fatal collision. “But there’s also a knock-on effect - a conviction is likely to increase the cost of your car insurance, you could lose your job and you could have difficulty travelling to other countries. Above all, drugdriving is not a risk worth taking. “We have a duty and a commitment to keep the roads in Sussex safe, and as such we take a zero tolerance approach to drug-driving. Anyone caught committing the offence will be dealt with accordingly.” Under the new law, it is an offence to drive while over the prescribed limit of illegal drugs. But motorists are also liable to criminal proceedings if they are caught driving while over the prescribed limit of legal drugs. Any individual convicted of drugdriving faces a minimum 12-month disqualification, an unlimited fine, up to six months in prison and a criminal record. In addition, information about a drug-driving conviction will remain on your licence for 11 years. The penalty for causing death by dangerous driving under the influence of drugs is up to 14 years in prison. About 80 people have their jobs at risk as Beales department store in Horsham faces closure. The company confirmed to the District Post this week that the store will shut in July, ten years after it came to the town. The store employs 31 Beales workers, but there are about 50 others not on the company’s payroll working on concessions within the store. Beales opened at The Forum at the old Allders store at Lower Tanbridge Way in September 2006. A statement from the company said: “The landlord of the Beales store in Horsham has given notice to terminate the lease. The lease ends in July 2016. Beales is disappointed, as it would have liked to have continued trading there. “This matter is separate to CVA (company voluntary arrangement) negotiations. Beales employs 31 staff in its Horsham branch and is currently considering options to re-locate some of these staff to

The loss of Beales mirrors the decline of top-class large department stores in Sussex towns. Burgess Hill lost its large Victorian Hoadleys stores at Junction Road many years ago, Haywards Heath lost its top-class Hiltons store in South Road, and Brighton lost the renowned Hanningtons store in North Street. None has ever been replaced with a similar store and in more recent years stores have also faced fierce competition from people turning to internet shopping

as well as rising rents and other overheads. Over the years Beales has sold a huge range of goods under one roof including services such as bath shop, bedding, Café Nova, china, glass, cookshop cosmetics and fragrance, decorative accessories, electrical, fashion accessories, furniture, occasional gifts, housewares, womens fashions, shoes, lingerie, nightwear, swimwear, luggage, menswear, stationery and toys. The opening of the Horsham store ten years ago was relatively recent in the firm’s history. Beales empire began in 1881 when John Beale opened what was then called the Fancy Fair and Oriental House in Bournemouth, considered to be the firm’s flagship store in later years. It is believed to have been the first store chain to have a “real life” Father Christmas, in 1885. The opening of the Horsham store much later was seen as a jobs boost and also the addition of a prestige store name to a town that already had a reputation for one of the most attractive town centres in Sussex. Now the town must wait to see how long it takes to fill such a large and prominent building while the staff try to settle their futures..

Horsham ‘s first English Festival could be become an annual event, say supporters. Thousands were entertained over two days with a combination of traditional English dance, music, classic vehicles, traditional food, drink and entertainments. Afterwards Dick Streeter, who was heavily involved in both days, said: “It was great to see the ideas we had worked on all come to fruition. This year more than 25 dancing ‘sides’ were represented, together with Saturday’s Carfax Local Produce and Craft market plus the new feature of a display of Morris Minor cars on the Forum. Sunday’s Horsham Folk Club concert in aid of Crawley and Horsham Samaritans was extended with displays of classic cars from Arun Motors, the latest Jaguars from Harwoods and classic bikes from Dresda supported by over 20 privately owned classic British bikes including Nortons, Triumphs, Vincents and BSAs. King Henry Eighth and his Tudor court and the Loxwood Joust brought more fun and more than a smattering of history to proceedings given weight by the evocative Traction engine farming contractor display from Horsham Traction Company. Elsewhere in the Carfax, Hepworth’s brewery, Help the Aged’s Tea Marquee and the Horsham Rotary LINC bake stall vied for taste buds attention with hot street food from Garlic Wood Farm and Pig in a Jacket and the Pitcairn shell fish stall. For children there were Busy Days face painting, a tea cups fun fair ride and traditional games including a coconut shy and the walking balloons stall in Swan Walk Shopping Centre.
The family of a man stabbed savagely to death on the A24 by a paranoid schizophrenic believe he might never have crossed paths with his killer if mental health experts had done their jobs better. The NHS trust involved admitted this week failures in its care of severely mentally ill Matthew Daley. The 35-year-old stabbed retired solicitor Don Lock 39 times after a minor, low-speed crash between their vehicles. Horrified witnesses described it as a frenzied attack. Daley is now awaiting sentence on July 8 after a jury at Lewes Crown Court found him guilty on Monday of the manslaughter of 79-year-old Mr Lock. After the trial Colm Donaghy, chief executive of the Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, admitted failings in the care of Daley, while also indicating it was uncertain whether or not they would have led to the tragedy. Mr Donaghy said in a statement seen by millions of television viewers: “We didn’t give Matthew the right care. What I can’t say is that that would have had an impact on the outcome.” But Mr Lock’s grieving fam-

ily insisted if Daley’s treatment had been different he would not have killed Mr Lock, who had only just been given the all-clear from cancer. Referring to the Trust’s role, Mr Lock’s son Andrew said in a statement after the conclusion of the court hearing: “It is clearly clear that dad would still be here today if they had done their job properly. Nothing we say or do now will bring dad back to us. “But we will continue the spirit that dad carried with him Mr Lock was attacked soon after leaving his cycling club meeting at Washington at about 8.40pm on July 16 last year, driving home to Worthing in his Toyota Auris, following Daley in his Ford Fusion. Outside Rogers Farm on the A24 at Findon, Daley braked and Mr Lock collided with the back of his car at about 20mph.The crash was a minor bump causing only slight damage to each car. Both men got out of their cars but Daley was armed with a knife and stabbed Mr Lock to death. Next day at Hill Barn Golf Course Daley was arrested. He had with him a rucksack containing the knife. During his interview he told detectives where he had parked his car at the stables and where he had hidden his wellington boots in Pot Lane and his underpants in Water

An 11-year-old girl fighting cancer was heartbroken when a hit and run driver brought tragedy to her life. Her angry mother says the incident is just one of several heartbreaking deaths in the same road involving cherished pet cats. Talented gymnast Molly Jane Weston is having chemotherapy for a rare bone cancer and her pet Siamese Pandora was one of her great comforts. But early one morning a driver hit the two-year-old cat as it was grooming itself in Friday Street, Warnham, near the family home, and the driver did not stop. Last Thursday in the same street Molly Jane’s friend Poppy Mayer, 12, lost her cat Wilbur under cruel circumstances. Wilbur was shot in the head with an air gun and as he tried to reach home a driver ran him over, failing to stop. Only two days before, little Molly Strafino, eight, and brother Vito lost their cat Snowy when another driver ran it over in the same road, again not stopping. Molly Jane’s mother Sophie, of estate agents Mapp and Weston, told the Post: “I had to pick up Pandora from the road. I don’t think the drivers think about how much this affects the kids. They are just carrying on, on their way to work. “Pandora was Molly’s Jane’s best

pet, and her death was absolutely hideous. It set Molly Jane back in her treatment. Because of her condition and treatment she can’t have another cat until three months after her treatment is finished in August, and Pandora was a great comfort for her. Apart from the shooting, Sophie believes the cat deaths are down to thoughtlessness rather than being deliberate acts. She said: “I think it is just commuters in a hurry. Friday Street is an absolute death trap. There will be an accident here, I am sure someone will get injured. Friday Street is supposed to be a 20 miles an hour zone and it is abused daily.” Young Poppy was so upset about the fate of her shot cat that she wrote a touching message that has been posted around

died. Xoxox poppy, 12” The happier news for the Weston family is that Molly Jane is responding well to her treatment at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London. Sophie said: “She is actually clear, although she doesn’t finish her treatment until August. The doctors say she will make a full recovery. The cancer had stopped being active and she is back her elite gymnast sessions. She has handled it all very well. She had the cancer in seven areas. It was first diagnosed after she was unable to walk because of hole in her hip. It was found she also had a double back fracture and a fractured collar bone. At the age of 10 we had to start pushing her around in a buggy. She has to take 18 tablets a day, but she has been absolutely brilliant in the way she has handled all this.” Molly Jane and Daisy Weston

School crossing patrollers at blackspots will get body cameras to record thoughtless drivers, if a pilot scheme proves successful. “Lollipop man” Len Howard is trying out the equipment after suffering from motorists driving past him without stopping, endangering pupils and parents about to cross the road. He has also experienced drivers winding windows down to shout abuse at him. West Sussex County Council has now joined with Camelsdale Primary School, near Billingshurst and Sussex Police to trial a body camera outside the school gates. Len wears the body camera, christened by the school as ‘Len’s Lens’, across his chest. Attached by the lapels of his coat, it can capture audio and video of motorists driving dangerously or being abusive. Temporary signs are up outside the school to warn offending motorists they are now on camera. Pet owners are more likely to heartlessly dump them in the summer months, says the Horsham-based Royal Society For The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Statistics suggest it will be anything but a summer of love for hundreds of poor creatures, with one pet being abandoned every hour on average. The numbers recorded by the charity soar from a relative low of 599 rejected in May to 1087 dumped in July, with June at 830, August 834 and September 891. Every year nationally the charity is called out to rescue hundreds of animals across England and Wales after their owners abandon them and in many cases leave them for dead. In 2015 a total of 2,751 animals were rescued by the animal welfare charity with a peak in admissions in July. Now the society is bracing itself for another summertime influx of dumped animals

this year too, with some victims in Sussex. It is thought one contributing factor of people dumping their animals in the summer months is down to some owners heading off on holiday and not finding anyone to look after their pet while they are away. The charity’s Supt Simon Osborne said: “People often think that Christmas is the time we see the most abandoned animals - but it is actually the summer. “In the summer months the number of dumped animals we rescue spikes up in number - with one animal being collected every hour on average**. “Every day our inspectors face cases where animals have been left abandoned in fields, dumped in boxes, left for dead at the side of roads and even left outside our animal centres and hospitals. It is just heartbreaking. These poor animals are often just dumped without a care for their welfare or what might happen to them. “We will never know why these animals are just discarded like rubbish. It could be for any number of reasons. Whether it is the fact that more pets are abandoned in the summer because the nov-

elty of their Christmas present pet has worn off by the summer, they don’t want the responsibility of finding someone to look after their pet while they are away on holiday or whether more pets are found dumped because of the longer daylight hours we will never know. It could be any number of reasons. “All we know is that there is a real peak in the number of abandonments in the summer months - July in particular - and it is animal welfare charities like us at the RSPCA that are left to pick up the pieces. There is a huge strain on our resources at this time of year because of this. “Many abandoned animals that are rescued by the RSPCA are very badly neglected and poorly so need urgent vet care and often hospital treatment.” Some of the more disturbing cases the charity has seen so far this year include Bertie the Yorkshire terrier who was dumped with matted fur in a wheelie bin, Maverick the Staffordshire Bull Terrier abandoned at London Victoria coach station when his owners could not take him on holiday with them and Peanut the lurcher puppy that was left for dead under a bush.

Police trying to find out why a young woman driver crashed to her death in an early morning incident have appealed for witnesses. According to information available to them, the 26-year was driving a grey Ford Focus northwards on the A24, in the nearside lane of the dual carriageway between Findon and Washington. Soon after 5.30am on Sunday the car left the road and the woman, from Worthing, died at the scene from her injuries. A 24-year-old Horsham woman questioned about the suspected murder of a young father has been bailed until November after being re-arrested. The woman is one of four people interviewed about the tragic death of Sam Caulfield, 20, who died after being stabbed at Spencers Road in West Green, Crawley. He died soon afterwards in hospital. Two men and two women were initially arrested after Sussex Police launched a murder investigation into Mr Caulfield’s death, and had been expected to answer their bail next Tuesday. Police confirmed to the District Post this week that a man of 20 from Cambridge, a woman of 24 from Horsham, a woman of 23 from Crawley and a man of 20 also from Crawley, had been arrested on Thursday of last week on suspicion of murder, perverting the course of justice and possession of a Class A drug. The four have been bailed until November 17 while detectives continue their investigations into the incident in June. None of their names have been made public. Mr Caulfield, from Mayfield, vol-

And about 900 of the houses are expected to lower-priced homes, known in planning circles as “affordable”. Liberty Property Trust is asking for approval for 2, 750 homes, a third of which will be offered as “affordable” houses. The firm’s planning ap

was held at Woodvale Crematorium in Brighton. A poem written by his girlfriend was read out at the service, including the lines: “You had a family who loved you so, a baby girl so beautiful and pure.”

Jail for lock-smashing gang
Three men who broke into homes in Horsham as part of a gang striking nationally are now serving jail sentences totalling 21 years. The trio used a technique where door locks were broken to enter homes in Sussex and Devon and were only caught after the discovery of a memory card with holidays snaps. Among their Horsham victims last year were people living in Falklands Drive, Patchings, Cootes Av-
enue. Churchill Avenue, Vale Drive, Rusper Road and Rushams Road. The gang also struck in Burgess Hill at The Warren and The Ridings, in Farlington Avenue, Haywards Heath, and four times in 2014 at Bognor, twice in Andrew Avenue, once in Drake Park and once in Mansfield Road. There were also 23 burglaries across Devon. At Exeter Crown Court last week the three were jailed after being found guilty of conspiracy to com-
mit burglaries in Devon and Sussex during 2014 and 2015. Tomas Paulavicius, 36, was sentenced to eight years, Dainius Gastilavicius, 39, was given seven years, and Arturas Malysovas, 21, six years. All were from East London. Devon and Cornwall Police led the lengthy investigation working closely with the West Sussex Priority Crime Team of Sussex Police. The investigation began in 2014 after a series of specific burglaries
In June 2015 detectives launched a nationwide appeal to trace three potential victims of crime after memory cards were recovered during the investigation at Paulavicius’ home. Photographs taken on holiday in Koh Sumai, Thailand, were released of potential victims officers were keen to identify. Following the successful appeal on social media, the woman in the photographs, from Lincolnshire, contacted police. She had been the victim of a burglary and was subsequently reunited with her stolen property. Detective Constable James Wadley of the Sussex Police Priority Crime Team added: “This was a complex and worthwhile investigation in which we worked closely with our colleagues in Devon and Cornwall Police. Identifying the owner of the memory card was key linking the offenders to the series of burglaries. “This guilty verdict will bring some reassurance and peace of mind to the victims who suffered a very traumatic experience, and in some cases, lost sentimental valuables that have been irreplaceable.” Pictured are Tomas Paulavicius (left), Dainius Gastilavicius (centre) and Arturas Malysovas, (right).
were identified by Devon and Cornwall Police, in which UPVC door locks were snapped to enable the offenders to get into the property. Detective Constable James Brice, based in Totnes, said: “The offenders, who were all living in East London, were identified by local officers. It became clear that this was national problem as the three men were part of an organised criminal gang travelling across the country committing similar offences.”
Key votes coming on council tax rise Phil Dennett News Editor
Council tax payers in Horsham district will fork out about £50 extra a year for services after being hit by another increase that has fuelled a Tory versus Tory protest. Residents will pay nearly 4 per cent more in West Sussex County Council tax from April if a county cabinet recommendation is approved by full council on February 19. That comes after Horsham District councillors recently recommended a rise of 1.2 per cent in the district council tax, to be approved by full council on February 24. If both are given the nod, as expected, it would mean residents in Horsham district paying a total of about £47 a year extra for district and county taxes. This is made up of an average county increase of £45.90 and a district increases of £1.63 on average. On top of the county and district taxes there will be average increase of £2.79 a year (1.98 per cent) in Sussex Police tax, known as precept, and any parish or town council
precept depending where you live. Southwater Parish Council is increasing its precept by 5.2 per cent, adding an average of £3.64 a year to council tax bills in that area. Horsham and West Sussex Councils, both Conservative-run, have said a large reduction in grant from the Conservative Government, as part of continuing austerity meas-
Horsham and West Sussex Councils, both Conservativerun, have said a large reduction in grant from the Conservative Government, as part of continuing austerity measures, has forced their hand
expected grants cut and increased demand for services has produced a £44.2 million “black hole” in the budget. West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet is proposing a council tax increase of 3.95 per cent, with budget for 2016/17 set at £529million. The county council says its aim is to safeguard critical frontline services and protecting the most vulnerable. The council tax increase includes the two per cent charge announced by Chancellor George Osborne in November 2015 to help councils meet the demands of supporting an increasingly ageing population. Louise Goldsmith, Leader of West Sussex County Council, said the council had raised concerns about the settlement with local MPs and Government. Louise said: “It is with a heavy heart that we present this budget and propose this increase after six years of a council tax freeze. I hope residents will understand that this proposal is not being made lightly. “We are one of the councils worst hit by this funding settlement from Government. That combined with increasing pressure on our resources means we have to propose this increase.”

As the next generation of A level students picked up crucial GCSE results yesterday, the outgoing one prepared for the next stage in life after collecting impressive A level results last week. On Thursday of last week hundreds of youngsters across the district collected A level results with the annual mix of hugs, celebration and calls home from mobile phones, as well as a few shrugs of the shoulders and tears at disappointing results. For most there was some reason to party or a sigh with relief, while their schools and colleges across the district reported delight at their efforts. Christ’s Hospital reported 70 per cent of passes at A*-B, Collyer’s had an A2 pass rate of 99 per cent, Steyning Grammar celebrated a 99 per cent overall pass rate, and Farlington reported outstanding results. The optimism was reflected by West Sussex County Council, which said early reports provided by school sixth forms showed that young people in West Sussex

continue to perform well at A2 , the full A Level that most students take at the age of 18 at the end of a two year course. They also did well at AS Level, which is taken by most students at age 17 after one year or as an addition to A2 at age 18. The A2 grades for A*-E in West Sussex this year are above national and an improvement on last year. The proportion of passes at A*-B were also slightly up this year. At AS the percentage of passes at Grades A and B show an improvement on last year. Good results have also been achieved by young people obtaining BTEC Certificates. Christine Field, acting Cabinet Member for Education and Skills congratulated all West Sussex students studying in Local Authority maintained schools, academies and colleges on their achievements. She said: “I am absolutely delighted with the work ethic shown by students in order to achieve their personal goals. “I would like to acknowledge the on-going hard work of our teachers in helping young people to achieve these goals, and the tremendous contribution of parents and carers in offering support to youngsters at what I know can be a very stressful time.”

Staff at John Lewis At Home store in Horsham were praised for keeping it open after night raiders smashed their way in. Electronic equipment worth thousands of pounds was stolen and severe damage caused as the raiders broke a large window and climbed through the open gap. They cut security leads on laptops, tablets and other electronic equipment. The gang of three was spotted leaving only a few minutes after
breaking in but got away despite a helicopter search. The raid happened a few hours after the store shut on Monday evening and the store faced a race against time to get open in time for Tuesday morning. Manager Nigel Davis told the District Post early on Tuesday morning: “We are completely open to trade. There is no disruption whatsoever, thanks to our partners (staff) who came in to clean up. We have got quite a lot of partners living nearby, and they all came in to help. That’s one of the good things about John Lewis, the team spirit.” It appears that the raiders targeted specific kinds of goods in the
store, which also sells furniture, soft furnishings and other home items. Mr Davis said: “They took audio equipment, computers, tablets, electronic devices. I think they were easy to shift. “It is a horrible thing to be broken into. But the important thing is that no-one was hurt, as long as everyone is safe.” The store is next to the Waitrose supermarket, which employs night workers. Mr Davis said: “There were Waitrose staff in at the time, but they are two separate buildings.” Mr Davis said he could not comment on rumours that losses from
the raid might be about £10,000. He said: “We are not sure of the value of what was taken at this stage, it could easily be £10,000, we don’t know. There was considerable damage. They smashed one of the front windows to gain access. And there was damage to fixtures because we secure all our products. They are locked to cabinets.” John Lewis ‘At Home’ opened last summer and sells furniture, furnishing accessories, homeware, home and electrical technology, nursery and travel goods and well as providing other services. Despite the shock and disappointment of the raid Mr Davis, its first manager, said: “We opened on
June 18th last year and we have had a phenomenal year, really good.” Sussex Police said: “Police were called to the store in Albion Way at 10.53pm after a large pane of glass at the front of the building had been smashed to gain access. Once inside, the raiders broke into a glass cabinet to remove the electronic equipment and also raided a number of tills, making off with a small amount of cash. Less than five minutes after breaking in, three men were seen running from the building carrying what appeared to be duffel bags. A police helicopter was called in to assist the search for the men, but they were not located.”

area as part of developing the Town Centre Vision for Horsham later this year. The council says the sculpture has reached the end of its serviceable life and would require continuing costly repairs as well as weekly and monthly maintenance work to retain it as originally intended. Since installation in 1996 the
council has had to spend more than £200,000 on repairs and maintenance of the sculpture. It said: “In view of the current and anticipated pressures on the council’s budgets, and feedback from the public who are strongly in favour of removing the sculpture, the removal of the Rising Universe is therefore being proposed.”

Roads Policing Unit identified the vehicle before the Robin Hood Roundabout on the A24 southbound, and it was followed onto the A264 towards Five Oaks. Shortly afterwards, the vehicle failed to stop when signalled to do so by police and a pursuit followed. During the pursuit, the vehicle was driven at what a court was told were high speeds and in a dangerous manner in a narrow country road, before officers lost sight of it. The vehicle was later found parked at the rear of a farm in West Chiltington Lane, near Coolham, at about 1pm, where Freeman was arrested and taken into custody. Investigating officer Peter KingFisher said: “Freeman was witnessed driving on the A24, while disqualified and uninsured, at speeds in excess of 90mph right in front of a marked police car. He then pulled off onto the A264 and stopped at a set of temporary traffic lights. With police behind him and the lights still red, he sped through into oncoming traffic, forcing other motorists out of the way. “We pursued Freeman but lost him as he travelled at 80mph along Bashurst Hill, which is a very narrow country lane. The manner of his driving throughout was disgraceful and a lot of other motorists had to take evasive action to avoid a collision. He could quite easily have caused a serious accident. “His sentence reflects the seriousness of the offences he committed and the complete disregard he showed for other road users.”

A motorcyclist who exceeded 100 miles an hour on the A24 near Horsham and then narrowly avoided colliding with pedestrians and other vehicles during a high speed pursuit has started a jail sentence. Police describe the behaviour of Gavin Collett as the most outrageous incident of dangerous driving they have ever seen in Sussex. Collett, 32, was driving so fast when first spotted on the A24 southbound between Broadbridge Heath and Findon that the National Police Air Service helicopter was called in to track his movements. A court heard he carried out a series of dangerous manoeuvres at various locations, including builtup parts of Worthing and Brighton on March 10 this year. On several occasions he went straight through red lights while pedestrians were crossing, mounted pavements, travelled in the face

A Horsham mother is staging a peace picnic this weekend after being disgusted by abuse attacks linked to the vote to quit the EC. Nationally there have been several incidents of hate abuse against people because of the historic referendum decision to quit the European Union and one alleged incident at Southwater is being investigated. Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne has expressed her concern about the attacks. Now Jemma Warren, 27, has organised a United Horsham Picnic for The People on Sunday at the Human Nature Garden in Horsham Park. Jemma is putting aside her own personal cancer battle against Hodgkin Lymphoma, for which she is receiving chemotherapy, to organise the antihate picnic on July 10 at noon. Jemma, who lives at Greenfinch Way, Horsham, with
driving for three years and must remain on licence for at least 12 months on release from prison. He admitted the offences at an earlier hearing. His two-year prison sentence includes time already spent in custody from his arrest on March 13 .PC Ben Henwood, of the Sussex Police Road Policing Unit, who led the investigation, said: “Collett’s sentence is fully deserved, and it represents the massively aggravated nature of his behaviour over an extended period of time. While this is a good result from a policing point of view, the best result is the fact that no one was injured on that day, and we’re extremely thankful for that. “We have reviewed the footage and this is without doubt the most outrageous incident of dangerous driving we have ever seen in Sussex. “Throughout his journey, Collett showed a blatant disregard for anyone else’s safety and it’s a miracle no one else was hurt. Collett eventually handed himself in to police in Hampshire three days after the incident.

partner Nicholas Sheridan and children Joel, 5, and Erin, eight months, said: “I am hoping people will make signs and carry placards. It’s not a protest. It’s a message. “Just because we don’t witness a lot of abuse here it
doesn’t mean we can’t speak up against it. Now is the time to show our feelings. You can stand back or you can take action and I think it is time to take action. There has to be a stand against hatred, not just locally but nationally. The past few days have been emotional and there has been a lot of mud slinging nationally. At the latest count about 150 people have said they are coming to the picnic.”

Katy Bourne said: “It deeply saddens me that, since the EU referendum, reports of hate crime appear to have increased nationally. “Like many, I have no time for bigotry and believe that no one should be singled out and victimised because of their race, faith, sexuality, gender or disability. “Although I welcome the news that Sussex Police has not seen an increase in reports of hate crime locally, I do know that many minority groups have not always had the same trust in the police and this often leads to a reluctance to report. As PCC, I am determined to improve this for everyone in Sussex which is why I fully support any initiative that tackles hate crime, a key priority in my Police Crime Plan”. Meanwhile Jemma looks forward to completing her last two chemotherapy sessions, having been given the “allclear”. She said: “It is curable, which is good. I am officially in remission. I am actually cancer free, but I have to complete the course.”

The report added: “As there is a demand for market level rented properties within the District the Strategic Housing Manager welcomes the proposed development and it is considered that the proposal would assist in meeting a local need for housing, as required by Policy 16 of the Horsham District Planning Framework.” Councillors on the Development Control North committee agreed on Tuesday evening that the scheme by Crest Nicholson should be delegated for approval to the council’s development manager subject to securing a legal agreement and appropriate conditions with the company. The rental estate will have 104 one-bedroom flats or maisonettes, another 104 two –bedroom flats, eight three-bedroom flats, seven three-bedroom terraced houses and four four-bedroom terrace houses, with a communal club house and ball court.

Young people seeking rented homes will be offered more than 200 on a new private estate near Horsham. Every one of the 227 homes on the latest phase of building at Kilnwood Vale off the A264 will be a private rental property. But before the latest stage of its approval this week people living nearby claimed it would bring trouble to the rest of the estate, which will eventually have about 2500 homes when it is finished. The all-rental homes are part of a move in a relatively new idea to solve the acute shortage of rented properties for young people who are in good jobs but find the excessive cost of buying a home beyond them. Before Horsham district councillors backed the scheme they read a report detailing concerns in more than 30 letters from people living near the proposed site, which is known as phase 2.1B of the Kil-

People of Horsham have big hearts, say charity organisers. Marie Curie Nurses in Horsham say they want to want to thank everyone involved in making the 2016 Great Daffodil Appeal a great success. The month long appeal in March saw volunteers out in force to encourage people to make a donation and wear the charity’s daffodil pin to help support people living with a terminal illness and their loved ones. Students in Horsham district seem to have bucked the trend in GCSE results this year as they head for the start of A level studies this month. Nationally GCSE success rates are reported to show a decline. But local head teachers report delight at 2016 results (see reports
inside) and county education bosses said students had performed better than the national average. West Sussex County Council has congratulated students in schools across the county, including Horsham district. It said: “Based on the provisional results received from schools it seems likely that the overall performance for the county has improved from last year. National media reports suggest early results for schools this year
have shown a decline. However, West Sussex appears to have bucked this trend. Results shared by most of West Sussex schools, as measured by the 5A*-C including English and maths, have improved from last year’s result of 60 per cent to around 61.5 per cent this year – a 1.5 per cent rise. Although the figures need to be validated later this year, once again the rise is likely to place West Sussex above the national average.”
Christine Field, Acting Cabinet Member for Education and Skills congratulated all West Sussex students studying in Local Authority maintained schools, academies and colleges on their achievements. She said: “I am delighted that students in West Sussex have managed to buck the national trend and have achieved so well. Our increased performance this year is a tribute to our dedicated students and their teachers, school leaders and, most impor-
tantly, the parents and carers that have supported their youngsters in progressing to the next stage of their education.” Typical of positive local reactions was Nick Wergar, head of Steyning Grammar, who said: “In a changing educational world these are an excellent set of results”. Next year changes in the way results are classed begin, with Maths and English given numbered marks instead of the current alphabetic ones.

vied to show the best food display award, with Buenos Aries, Giggling Squid, Marion de Montfort, Nandos and Wabi staking their claims. Beer fans hit the Horsham beer trail, sponsored by Hepworth Brewery as Horsham warmed up the tastebuds for the current district Food and Drink Festival.
Bus users have launched a campaign for a better service for their village. Their petition calls for an evening bus service in Broadbridge Heath, near Horsham and a better Sunday service. Residents have signed up for the petition to Metrobus Ltd, Arriva Kent and Surrey Ltd and Compass Travel (Sussex) Ltd. The campaigners said in a statement of their aims : “Broadbridge Heath is an area served by three bus services during the day, but none in the evening. With a growing population due to new housing developments, an evening service is becoming increasingly necessary. “Broadbridge Heath is a long walk from the town centre, not something you want to do after working all day. Some people are unable to walk such a distance. “An evening service in Broadbridge Heath may also benefit other areas it passes through and possibly provide evening links with other towns. “We request an hourly service, running until 0000.(midnight) All journeys should serve Horsham Bus Station and Horsham Railway Station. Journeys could connect with fast trains from London Victoria. “To provide the greatest benefit, Wickhurst Green should be served.
“Out of the three routes that run during the week, only one runs on a Sunday. “The first Sunday service journey serves Broadbridge Heath at 1047 and the last journey back is at 1702. It only runs every two hours. “We request an earlier service at 0847 and a later service at 1902. An hourly service would be useful. Wickhurst Green should be served by all journeys. It would also be useful to serve Horsham Railway Station throughout the day. Jour-

theatre on the evening of May 12, 2017. Winner of Strictly Come Dancing 2014, Pasha Kovalev, tours, once again, with his brand new show ‘Let’s Dance the Night Away’. Pasha arrived in the UK in 2011, as one of the professionals on Strictly Come Dancing. His first celebrity partner was Chelsee Healey and they became the nation’s favourites, when they were runners up to the coveted title. After the huge success of his ‘Life Through Dance’ and ‘It’s All About You’ tours over the last few years, Pasha will be joined again by his spectacu-
lar dancers, including special guest Anja Garnis, for an evening of live singing, dance, chat and fun. This brand new production features breath-taking choreography, sensational music and stunning costumes, to leave the audience supercharged with positive energy and emotion. A hugely interactive show, it promises to reach out to the local dance communities, as well as entertain fans of Pasha, dance and of Strictly Come Dancing. The Jam on tour again
Bruce Foxton, most recognised as the bass player in legendary bands ‘The Jam’ and ‘Stiff Little Fingers’, is touring again, performing all the classic tracks he helped to create in The Jam, together with guitarist Russell Hastings and Smiley. ‘From The Jam’ will be performing at The Hawth, Crawley, on January 14. During his time in the legendary group The Jam, Bruce Foxton was one of the driving forces, behind singer, guitarist, and songwriter Paul Weller, after the group split in 1982 he enjoyed a solo career having a hit with his single “Freak”. After collaborating with many other musicians Bruce then joined Stiff Little Fingers and stayed with them for fifteen years. Vocalist and guitarist Russell Hastings amazes audiences with his authentic and passionate interpretation when
he performs The Jam’s back catalogue. Smiley is the newest addition to this power trio. For over the three decades, he has been the backbone to some amazing performers, including Joe Strummer, Robbie Williams, Archive, The Alarm, The Mock Turtles, Ba company, Republica, Spear of Destiny, Lily Allen, Alexandra Burke, and Billy Bragg, to name but a few. From the Jam have toured the UK to many sold out venues, as well as toured the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Europe. They released their album ‘Smash the Clock’ in March and are looking forward to bringing their music to audiences in Crawley.. This will be a standing event, with seating available in the circle only. Tickets, priced £22.50, are available from The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 or by visiting hawth. co.uk.

Capitol offers great show to get you into the Spirit of New Year
The nation’s favourite psychic, Sally Morgan, is back and better than ever, with her brand new
and most jaw-dropping show yet. ‘Call Me Psychic’ is funny,
Box Office 01403 750220 www.thecapitolhorsham.com
entertaining, sometimes heart breaking, often controversial; the show celebrates her 8th year on the road. Sally said: “Every night, when I’m on stage, amazing things happen and it’s a privilege to be able to pass on messages of love and comfort to the people I share my gift with”. Sally has had an outstanding career, which is largely down to her warm and down to earth personality. Her ‘no holds barred’ and ‘matter of fact’ manner has attracted a whole new audience to the spiritual world. Performance: January 13 at 7.30pm. Tickets vailable online: www. thecapitolhorsham.com or via the Capitol Box Office: 01403 750220

ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY (12A) Young actors won ovations for their new drama director’s first big project. John Johnson was appointed as Christ’s Hospital’s Director of Drama this term. He directed the school’s senior play ‘Les Misérables’, adapted for schools. The four performances were full to the rafters and drew standing ovations from appreciative audiences. John joined Christ’s Hospital in September from Christ’s Col-
lege Brecon where he was Head of Creative Arts and Assistant House Master for four years and before that he was Head of Drama and Head of House at the Elizabeth Woodville School for five years. As an actor, John toured Italy with an international theatre production company and created his own work at The Edinburgh Festival. Most recently John has acted with The Willow Globe Theatre Company in ‘The Merry Wives of Windsor’ and with Open Stage on
‘The Three Sisters’, ‘Hecuba’ and ‘Love’s Labour’s Lost’. Also an author, John has worked on the recent Edexcel ‘A level Drama and Theatre’ book and he is also currently contributing to an Edexcel GCSE Drama Revision Book due for release in 2017. He has reviewed for The British Theatre Guide and had theatre reviews published in the national press. Scenes from the show are pictured.

Richard Ordidge – Green and White stalwart Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Richard Ordidge joined Horsham Rugby Club in 1977 and has been a constant presence at the Coolhurst ground in Hammerpond Road ever since. He was born in the town and educated at Heron Way and Christ’s Hospital and enjoyed football, cricket and athletics, but rugby is his passion. Richard told the District Post: “I just love the combination of skill, pace and power required on the field combined with the camaraderie off it, which is unmatched in any other sport. And, to me HRFC is a unique family club – when we won the cup in May 2015 twelve of the starting XV had progressed through the club’s Mini and Juniors, and, even more impressive – five of that team had fathers who used to play for Horsham’s 1st XV!” Richard played on the wing, centre or as full back for 20 seasons and then coached his son Johnny’s age group. Johnny is now a first team regular at inside centre. Richard has enjoyed many fond memories at Horsham Rugby Club but says: “I’m proud of what we’ve achieved – especially helping coach our Under 11s to become Sussex Champions in 2000, a side including Billy Twelvetrees who went on to play for England. Then, in 2014/5 it was great when our firsts pulled off the league and cup double, gaining promotion to the highest level for 20 years.” And, Richard has been an outstanding administrator at the club, in addition to coaching, he has been Treasurer, Vice Chairman, Press Officer, match reporter and,
particularly successfully, Commercial Manager a position that he currently combines with his profession as a financial advisor, Richard saying: “It can be challenging but those roles as well as looking after my grandson give me a good work/ life balance and the club is very keen to improve and enhance our facilities for use not just for rugby but by the wider Horsham community and I’m delighted that we’ve been able to bring in five times the level of sponsorship income than was coming in previously. We’ve already made improvements and have ambitious plans to build new changing rooms, convert the existing area into social space and up-grade the ground facilities, too. The clubhouse and ground are now hired by various groups and we’re keen to build up that source of income.” Club Captain Barry Wright played with Richard, telling the District Post: “He was a quick winger and now he’s the heartbeat of the club. We’re blessed with lots of volunteers and we’re all passionate about the club, but Richard more so than anyone – he sets the gold standard and without such heroes clubs don’t function, it’s as simple as that!” Among others raising funds at the club with a range of activities, Richard Ordidge took part in a fund raising cycle ride with his wife Fiona and has other schemes in mind. Meanwhile he can be seen selling programmes and manning the scoreboard at home games and travels to all of the green and whites 1st XV away games, in the true spirit of an outstanding clubman.

Jim Burroughs – Billingshurst’s Mr Cricket Jim Burroughs receiving his NatWest Outstanding Service to Cricket Award
Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Many sports clubs are lucky enough to have stalwarts at the helm but Billingshurst Cricket Club’s Jim Burroughs is in a class of his own, as recently recognised when he won an OSCA NatWest Outstanding Service to Cricket Award. Jim was presented with his “Heartbeat of the Club/Community” OSCA at Sussex Cricket HQ, Hove. Chris “Shaka” Shambrook says: “When Jim first came to Billingshurst the club was right down the leagues and had just one adult team, but he is incredibly positive – and visionary, too. He invited me to captain the club when Billi were in Division 3 of the West Sussex League, saying ‘look Shaka, we’ve got the best U15 team in the area, if we can keep those players then our future is very bright’. Inspired by his conviction we encouraged players to join and enjoyed 11 promotions in 15 years – right through to the elite Premier League.” Following his Sussex OSCA
Al Campbell managing expectations Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Al Campbell, Horsham Men’s Hockey 1st Team Manager recently celebrated his call up for Wales over 60s in the Celtic Cup at Marcq-en-Batouel, near Lille – the weekend tournament featuring matches against France, Ireland and Scotland. After the team had beaten France Al told the District Post: “It was an excellent hockey experience and I was ready for it – I first trialled for Wales as a schoolboy 45 years ago - I didn’t make the team then, but persistence pays off! And it was good to catch up with my son, Freddie,

who has over 30 junior caps for Wales, and my daughter, Phoebe, who played lacrosse for the Principality. In France it was great to be accompanied by Mike de Silva a Horsham Hobblers team mate – Mike scored a hat trick in what was his first international and his over 65 team won their tournament.” Midfield supremo Freddie Campbell is Horsham Men’s Vice Captain. Grandson of a Welsh miner, Al started playing hockey at 11 and enjoyed cricket, football and squash, too. These days he plays hockey for the Horsham Hobblers (vets), prepares the Men’s 1s for matches - running the bench on the touchline and shepherding
them through promotions up to their current highest ever level South League Premier Division 1. Marketing expert Al Campbell is in great demand for his services in Europe and across the UK, but wherever his busy job takes him he always makes time to chill out in his vegetable garden and cook up a storm in the kitchen. And, come Saturday, wherever the business week has taken him he will always be back in the Horsham Men’s hockey dugout. He sums up hockey with: “It’s a great game – I’ve played all my life and am looking forward to at least 10 more years on the pitch with competitions in Glasgow and Barcelona beckoning!”
Jim received a richly deserved invitation to the national event at Lord’s, telling the District Post: “It was a wonderful day, over 500 of us were treated to a champagne reception and five course lunch. Jonathan Agnew presented the awards attended by some cricket greats, including Jimmy Anderson, Chris Broad, Mike Gatting and Marcus Trescothick. It was absolutely fantastic!” And, Jim also won the BBC Sussex Unsung Hero Award, presented during the county celebratory evening at Brighton’s Grand Hotel. He runs his large and successful fencing business, a big enough job for most people, yet he still somehow found time to mastermind the relocation of Billingshurst Cricket Club from their old ground near the railway station to the excellent, extensive community facilities with two grounds, football and fishing at Jubilee Fields. The move involved intensive, complex negotiations with local authorities, but thanks to Jim’s quiet persistence and unstinting hard work he led the club to the realisation of his dream. Down the years he has been Sec-
retary, Colts Manager, Mr Fixit, and now - despite serious health setbacks - when many approaching 70 might be savouring retirement - he continues as Groundsman and, until very recently, long term Chairman. Jim comes from a well-known local sporting family – his son Mike is a wicketkeeping batsman for Billingshurst. And, Jim is also a life saver: this summer when out on an early morning walk he came across a man collapsed from a seemingly fatal heart attack, rang 999 and, although recovering from a shoulder operation, carried out exhausting CPR until the ambulance arrived. After a stay in hospital the survivor was able to return to work and subsequently praised Jim, sentiments echoed by the ambulance service. Billingshurst were relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season but, highly respected Jim Burroughs is already heading the planning for their return. Nothing is more certain that he will not rest until that is achieved. Shaka Shambrook sums up, saying: “If we add up all that Jim has done for Billingshurst CC
