Police hunt after bail breached phil dennett News Editor
Police launched a search for a man suspected of burglaries in Horsham and other areas after he failed to answer bail. Families in the Horsham and surrounding areas were hit by a series of thefts in 2016 and altogether four men have been interviewed by police in connection with the crimes committed. One of the four is 18-year old John Casey, who failed to answer his police bail on January 4 this year after having previously been arrested, and subsequently bailed, on suspicion of committing burglary. In their latest move in the continuing investigation Sussex Police made an appeal to the public through the media to help trace Casey in connection with their inquiries. Casey, who is white, 6’, with brown eyes and short straight brown hair, with a spotted face, frequents West Sussex, as well as London and Essex. Detective Sergeant Peter Yarrow
said; “Anyone who sees Casey or knows where he may be, is asked to contact us via 101@sussex.pnn. police.uk quoting Operation Bale. You can also report online to https://sussex.police.uk/contactus/response-to-appeal/ or call
Anyone who sees Casey or knows where he may be, is asked to contact us via 101@sussex. pnn.police.uk 101, or contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 (www. crimestoppers-uk.org). Casey’s arrest in May last year came after a police investigation into a series of 16 daytime burglaries at houses in the Horsham, Mid-Sussex and Brighton and Hove between April 28 and May 9. The property stolen included jewellery and cash.. Four men, including John Casey, were arrested on suspicion of burglary. One of them is currently on bail until January 30, and the other two are to have no action taken against them.

Katy seen as “boss of all bosses” Mrs Bourne with students
A student described Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne as the “boss of all bosses” after she gave a careers talk in Horsham. The Commissioner spoke about her career and its challenges at first of this year’s careers evenings for Christ’s Hospital sixth formers. Rebecca Stamp, 16, said “I was eager to learn more about Ms Bourne’s role. She explained how she sets the strategic directions and priorities for policing in Sussex and is also responsible to for setting the police budget of approx. £250 million. She also holds the chief constable to account for the delivery and performance of the force. She is basically the boss of all bosses! “Listening to Ms Bourne gave
me a great insight into the hard work that she puts into her job and also how she managed to get there. She is one of the few female PCCs in the country and is an example of someone who did not stop in order to reach her target. I feel extremely privileged to have met her.” Mrs Bourne was re-elected in May 2016. She talked about her career journey, explaining the routes into her work and spoke about the modern day reform that has led to some fascinating work in the county. Pupils were keen to ask about recruitment, as well as the politics and ethical issues surrounding her role. Helen-Claire Burt, teacher in charge of careers at the school, said: “We are so grateful to Katy for her time and commitment.”

Floss to the rescue for young woman Tim, Andy, and floss.
Bogus cops rob couple Two bogus police officers stole £1400 from a couple after showing them a false document. The men called at the address in Penlands Vale at Steyning at about 9pm on Wednesday evening last week and presented an A4 sheet of paper which they claimed was a court order allowing them to search the house for drugs and money. The victims were suspicious and said they would call 999 but the men said they would be handcuffed and arrested if they did. While the couple sat in the lounge, the two men went upstairs and conducted an untidy search before leaving with two cash tins containing a total of about £1400. One of the suspects is described as black, 5’8” and of skinny build with short black hair. He was wearing round glasses and a black jacket. The other is described as white, 5’7” and of stocky build with short dark brown hair. He was wearing dark, smart clothing. Detective Sergeant Peter Yarrow said: “We have already carried out house to house enquiries in the area and would now like to hear from anyone who saw anything suspicious on Wednesday evening, or in the previous few days” “Fortunately the victims were not physically hurt but have been left understandably shaken by what will have been an extremely intimidating experience. “Any information, no matter how insignificant you may think it is, could help our investigation. Witnesses can report online quoting reference 1299 of 25/01.” You can report online (https:// sussex.police.uk/contact-us/ response-to-appeal/). Anyone with information can also email 101@sussex.pnn.police. uk or call 101. Crime prevention experts say police officers will always identify themselves and will be happy for you to verify their identity by calling 101 or 999 in an emergency. You would never be threatened with arrest just for asking for clarification. If a warrant is executed at an
address, a copy of the warrant will handed to the people present as well as a ‘Rights and Powers’ booklet which explains your rights and entitlements and the legal powers under which the police are acting. You can find some general advice about bogus callers on the Sussex Police website (https:// sussex.police.uk/advice/protectyourself-and-others/fraud/protect-yourself-from-fraud/).
Firefighters at Horsham used dental floss to save a young woman from a potentially painful predicament. The worried 24-year-old arrived at the town fire station unable to remove a much-cherished ring from a finger. The ring had belonged to her mother and had become stuck when the daughter’s finger became swollen. Us-
ing their unusual technique, the firefighters managed to prevent damage to the ring by not resorting to the traditional ring cutter. The woman has now thanked the two firefighters for their work in saving the ring, which was of great sentimental value. The on-duty crew at the time included firefighters Tim Taylor and Andy Shaw from Horsham’s
D Watch and, when they learned of the personal importance of the jewellery, they decided to try something a little different to the traditional ring cutting tools that are held on station. Tim said: “Our first thought was to reach for the ring cutter. But once it became apparent the ring was of such great significance to the young woman, and she was not experiencing any pain, we decided to try something a little different. “We managed to feed some dental floss under the ring and then wrap the floss round and round the finger from the ring to the fingertip, securing it with a little knot. Then, using the tail end which we had fed under the ring, we pulled back towards the fingertip. “This prompted the ring to slowly rotate over the floss that was wrapped around the finger and move its way slowly along the floss, passed the swollen knuckle and eventually off the finger without causing any damage. The woman was not only relieved to have had the ring removed, but was thrilled that it was not cut or damaged in the process.”

Students see short stories turned into books
Two talented students have seen their short stories turned into printed books after success in a writing contest. Abi Harrison and Nicky Kemp from The Weald Community School at Billingshurst have been chosen as runners-up in Sussex based Evonprint’s ‘Get Kids Writ-
ing’ competition. They competed in a challenge open to all primary and secondary schools from across Sussex. Organisers say all the stories submitted demonstrated imagination and creativity, making the judging process extremely difficult for Evonprint, a print, design
and marketing specialist. Abi and Nicky, both age 14, were runners-up in the secondary school category and were delighted to each receive a printed copy of their short stories called ‘Adventures of Adam the Ant’ and ‘Metamorphosis’ respectively. Adam Rowland from Evonprint said: “We’re very passionate about education at Evonprint, so this competition was all about getting children creative by showing off their writing skills. There were some fantastic entries and we had a hard time choosing the winners. I’d like to say huge congratulations to Abi and Nicky and thank you to all the children who got involved.” The winner of the secondary school category was Ellie Roberts, age 14, from Bishop Luffa School in Chichester. Pictured ( left to right) are Adam Rowland from Evonprint, Abi Harrison, Peter Woodman Headteacher at The Weald Community School and Nicky Kemp.
Safer walking when work finishes Pedestrians will no longer have to take risks when walking around a busy roundabout in Pulborough. West Sussex Highways is providing a wider continuous footpath between the (A29/A283) Swan Corner roundabout and Lower Street. The two weeks of work is expected to finish on February 13, weather permitting. During the work existing parking bay will be removed so two existing footpaths can be connected. A pedestrian crossing point will replace it, complete with dropped kerbs.
West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Bob Lanzer, said: “This is a busy location in Pulborough for traffic using the A29 and A283. “Pedestrians feel exposed here without a footway and often have to walk a long way further down the road to cross where the road is wider and quieter. “With a better footpath and crossing point, it will make things much safer.” Temporary 24-hour traffic signals will be in place for the duration of the works, five days a week.
These signals will be manually controlled during peak hours, to help the flow of traffic. No work is taking place at weekends, again to minimise disruption. Bob added: “Unfortunately with work taking place at a busy location like this, there will be delays. “Advance warning signs will be in place at all approaches to Pulborough. “We ask everyone to be patient while this improvement is finished and avoid the area if they can.”

Safer Internet Day
The internet and technology can be a wonderful thing – information at our fingertips, a quick and easy way to keep in contact with friends, shopping and banking online and so much more. But it also offers a way for scammers and criminals to access our data. This year’s international Safer Internet Day is on Tuesday 7 February and to support the campaign, the Horsham District Community Safety Partnership is encouraging everyone to be aware of keeping safe whilst online by following this advice: Strong passwords - The National Cyber Security Centre advises that the best way to make a password memorable and strong is to use three random words. Your most important accounts are your email, social media and online banking accounts, so it’s important to use strong, separate passwords for each of these. Adding numerals or capital letters will make passwords even stronger. Never share your passwords.
Online shopping - Ensure website addresses start with https:// and show the padlock symbol next to the address. This shows it’s secure. Links and attachments - Don’t click on a link or open an attachment unless you are sure it is safe. Never click links to your bank - search for their website online or type in the direct web address. Also, don’t reply to scam emails to say ‘no’ as it alerts them that your email address is active. Protection - Install anti-virus and anti-spyware software on your computer. Also make sure the Firewall is turned on. Create a password for your router so no one else can access it without your consent. Always download the latest software and App updates as soon as they are available as they help to protect your devices from viruses and hackers. Phone calls - Never give someone who has made an unsolicited phone call access to your computer. They may upload software to supposedly solve a problem but it will instead allow them access to your personal data. Don’t be too friendly! - Don’t give away too much information on social media sites. Hide your details from people you don’t know on facebook and only accept ‘friends’ who you know. Protect the young - Parents/ guardians should advise children not to upload personal information and photos online, nor to send photos of a personal nature to anyone. They should never accept friendship requests from people they don’t know, should never arrange to meet up with someone they’ve ‘met’ online and should tell their parents if someone has asked them to do so. They should never share passwords. Children need to know that not everyone online is who they say they are and that they should tell their parents if they get a message that makes them feel uncomfortable. Webcams should be unplugged or covered when not in use. The Think U Know website offers advice for all ages: https://www. thinkuknow.co.uk To find out more about Safer Internet Day visit: https://www. saferinternet.org.uk/safer-internet-day/2017

Not going to “Uni” big draw for students Collyer’s Principal Sally Bromley, Hannah Roberts and Beckie Garrick
The theme “Not Going to Uni” brought three schools together in Horsham. About 180 pupils and parents from Forest, Millais and Tanbridge schools attended the first Collyer’s “Not Going to Uni” Year 10 and 11 evening. Collyer’s ran a similar session for its own pupils last year to show them opportunities other than university, and it was such a success that it was widened to invite the local schools this year. Welcomed by Collyer’s Principal Sally Bromley, the packed
audience posed questions to a panel of experts from industry, during a lively event in Collyer’s Duckering Hall. The session was managed by Lucy Hargreaves from the college’s Progression Directorate, with help on the night from Collyer’s apprentice Hannah Roberts and current student Beckie Garrick. After the questions session, guests were invited to speak to representatives from organisations, including the Army, Assurity Consulting, Chichester
University, Grant Thornton; NHS Apprenticeships, Outreach International, RAF, Sigta, Steve Willis Training, Thales, Virgin Holidays and Virgin Atlantic. Ali Hainsworth, from Grant Thornton, told pupils and parents: “I was sat in the audience at the event aimed at Collyer’s students last year, which I found hugely inspiring. It’s great that the college is running this event tonight to help to pupils at local schools. I wouldn’t be here tonight representing Grant Thornton on the panel without the careers and employability support I received at Collyer’s.” Experts on the panel quizzed by the audience were the Army’s Domi Wilkinson, Jordan Stringer from Assurity Consulting, Professor Dave Cooper from Chichester University, Grant Thornton’s Ali Hainsworth; Steve Summers from Outreach International, Adam Sandle from Red River, Ben Norton from Thales and Claire Henderson representing Virgin. Each answered questions on areas including apprenticeships, alternative routes, sponsored exams, sponsored degrees and ‘employability’ skills. Collyer’s is running a session for its own pupils soon.
Talk more than skin deep A talker got under the skin of pupils in a discussion on the subject in Horsham. Adrian Mellor, a qualified Safety Assessor, who conducts facility audits of cosmetic manufacturers and has 30 years’ cosmetic experience delivered the second enrichment Vive lecture of this year at Farlington School. The talk, called ‘The Science behind our Skin, the Sun and the Art of Safe Tanning.’ discussed many aspects of our skin including the ageing process, tanning and suncreams. Various myths about the skin were uncovered and students even discovered that the invention of the microwave involved pigeons dying during World War II. A particular highlight for the students was having the opportunity to look at how light altered the colour of face and body paints. The third Vive lecture of this year was hosted by Farlington English teacher, Allison Eversden. Allison, who trained in Sydney, Australia, as a makeup
artist in her twenties, presented a fascinating insight into the world of make-up artistry. Pupils discovered that there is a range of interesting roles available within the make-up artist industry. You could work applying make-up to models for still photographs, for actors and actresses at the theatre or even within the film and television industry.A captivating video of the series ‘Face-off’ illustrated how make-up within the special effects industry can alter someone’s appearance to an extraordinary level, starting with a very simple ‘bald cap!’ Students were introduced to the various skills you need to become a make-up artist such as being good with people and being able to work under pressure. A typical day on a film set is likely to involve an early start, a long day and lots of waiting around. You need your own make-up equipment, a good portfolio and lots of patience and creative flair.

MPs back loser but make a point
MPs representing people in Horsham district found themselves on the losing side but made a point when they supported frustrated train travellers.
Horsham MP Jeremy Quin and Arundel and South Downs MP Nick Herbert voted in the Commons last week for measures to limit unreasonable industrial action on critical national services. The move came after the continuing Southern train dispute with unions and a series of strikes. But the private members bill hit the buffers as it was voted down at the first hurdle by 206 votes to 127. The MPs were among more than 100 Conservative backbenchers to support the Industrial Action (Protection of
Critical National Services) Bill proposed by Conservative MP Chris Philp. The Bill proposed to regulate industrial action by those providing certain critical national services, including railways, bus operators, the National Health Service, fire and ambulance services. It required that those taking industrial action should demonstrate that the matter in dispute is proportionate and reasonable. But MPs declined to allow the Bill to be introduced by 206 votes to 127 after Labour and SNP MPs turned out in force to oppose it.
TONIGHT, I’M WEARING NOTHING BUT MY HEARING AID.
The bill had very little chance of becoming law because it would run out of time at the back of a long queue but MPs used it to make a point. Mr Quin told the Post: “What the vote signified was the concern of many MPs that industrial action on critical services can cause such distress to so many people and a desire that future industrial action should be proportionate to the issue involved. By convention members of the Government do not vote on private members business but I do share these concerns and was in the Commons to support the bill’s proposer. This particular bill was voted down by the Labour Party but in any event had no chance of becoming law. It is though an issue that in my view should be subjected to proper consideration, not linked to any particular dispute. Workers have a fundamental right to withdraw their labour but there equally has

to be a recognition of the impact that this can have on others. Some other Western countries have legislation that doesn’t in any way prevent industrial action but does ensure it is proportionate.” Mr Herbert said: “It is very disappointing that opposition MPs voted against the Bill, but a large number of Conservative MPs backed the measure, which sends a very clear signal to the Government that we are strongly supportive of new measures to deal with unreasonable industrial action of the kind we have seen affecting Southern Rail. “I hope that Ministers will consider the case for this carefully. There are a disproportionately high number of strikes on the railways, and a few hundred people have been able to cause total chaos on Southern for months on utterly spurious grounds.”

Students take up challenge Students at launch
Students from Tanbridge House school in Horsham are among those taking up an enterprise challenge. St Catherine’s Hospice has launched this year’s Five-O Project, an annual enterprise challenge for local schools. The launch at the Holiday Inn, Gatwick introduced teams of entrepreneurial students from participating schools, including Tanbridge House, to business mentors from NatWest and
hospice staff. Designed to develop business skills, the Five-O Project challenges a team of six students from
each school to create a business plan, event or idea that will raise a minimum of £1,500 for St Catherine’s from an initial £50 investment. This year’s s challenge is sponsored by NatWest, which is supplying three of its specialist business staff to provide guidance and support to each school
team on its business plans. Over the spring term, pupils will seek their mentor’s advice and use their business knowledge as they battle it out to host fundraising events or come up with an idea that raises more money than their rival teams. To learn more about the Five-O Project, please call a member of St Catherine’s s Community Fundraising Team on 01293 447361 or email: comfun@stch.org.uk.
Horsham songbird Phoebe hits high note Songbird Phoebe Weir, 14, has won a place in the National Youth Choir of Great Britain with her talent. To win her place Phoebe faced considerable national competition and undertook a thorough and searching audition. Phoebe, a pupil at Christ’s Hospital school in Horsham, said: “I was delighted when I found out that I had been accepted into the National Youth Choir of Great Britain choir because it is such a great group of choirs and it’s something I’ve always wanted to be part of. It means a lot to me and is a great confidence boost for the year. I’m really excited about this opportunity.”A musical pupil, Phoebe sings in the Chapel Choir and plays the saxophone in the band at Christ’s Hospital. Phoebe’s parents, Niall Weir and Heather Richardson, said: “We are so proud of her achievement and grateful to Christ’s Hospital’s music department for helping Phoebe to realise an ambition she’s had since a young age. “We look forward to the next stage of her musical journey.” Phoebe will be part of National Youth Girls’ Choir which is a constituent choir of the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain for girls aged 10-15. It meets twice a year at locations around the UK for five-day
residential courses culminating in concerts, and draws its membership from annual open auditions held nationwide. For many girls, membership of the National Youth Girls’ Choir is the start of a rich National Youth Choir of Great Britain career that proceeds via audition to membership of its senior ensembles. The National Youth Girls’ Choir has performed in concert at venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Southbank Centre, Birmingham Symphony Hall, the Aldeburgh International Festival and Coventry and Worcester Cathedrals, given world premieres of music by Jonathan Dove and Nico Muhly, and recorded for National Youth Choir of Great Britain’s own digital record label. Row continues over parking changes
Meanwhile it appears opposition is growing in villages to the changes. They include Billingshurst, Henfield and Storrington. There is also concern that other choices have not been considered by the district council. A Steyning Parish Council questionnaire revealed that more than 80% of residents supported adding a modest charge to the precept to cover potential car park charges and to protect the
More foster carers sought from district
People willing to become foster carers are being sought in Horsham district. Leading children’s charity Barnardo’s is urgently looking to fill a shortfall of 1100 carers in the South East. During Fostering and Adoption Week, the charity’s Fostering SouthEast service is appealed to people in the Horsham, Crawley, East Grinstead, Haywards Heath and Steyning areas to consider fostering. Children are being left in care for years because there are not enough people to offer them a safe and nurturing home. A recent survey by Barnardo’s (2) reveals that 71% of children in the South-East say the key to happiness is having a parent that believes in them which shows the fundamental role parents, guardians and
carers play in a child’s life. Fostering can transform a child’s life and give them the childhood they so desperately deserve. Jonathan Whalley, Barnardo’s Regional South-East and Anglia Director, said: “We believe that every child deserves a safe, supportive and loving home and are calling on people in West Sussex to come forward to find out more about fostering. “We are keen to hear from people who might be able to look after children aged 0 to 18 years in their own homes. Children who, because of difficult early experiences in life, need additional help and support. We are also looking for carers for sibling groups as well as parent and child.” For more information about fostering with Barnardo’s, please call the Fostering South-East service on 01892 510 650 or visit www.barnardos.org.uk/fostering. High levels of support and training are offered throughout a foster placement.

Parish councillors in Steyning are backing a judicial review of proposed car parking changes in Steyning. At its recent meeting Steyning Parish Council voted overwhelmingly to support the Steyning Chamber of Commerce’s decision to take the issue of parking charges proposed by Horsham District Council to Judicial Review and to issue a formal letter of objection to appeal against the proposed charging plans.
town from illegal parking and the long-term effects of a fall in the number of visitors. Local tradesman and member of Steyning Chamber of Commerce Nick Hempleman also obtained 1180 responses from residents and businesses who wished to pay “a bit extra on the Parish part of their Council Tax to keep parking free at the point of use, in the town”. Steyning Parish Council chairman Steve Northam said: “SPC believes that the introduction of car parking charges will lead to significant displacement parking on surrounding streets, further exacerbating this problem,” “In addition, we expect the charges to severely impact visitor numbers and further impact local traders at what is already a difficult time for the town following the closure of several banks in our high street.” Steyning Grammar School has also objected in the strongest terms to the proposed charges, believing that it would undermine its ability to safe guard the education and well being of its 1600 students across its three sites. The Steyning and District Community Partnership, Visitor and Tourism Group said it was frustrated that proper time had not been allowed for alternatives to be extensively explored.

New bid to beat selfish and dangerous phone users
People are being asked to report drivers who illegally use mobile phones after a new campaign was launched to combat the dangerous problem. Sussex Safer Roads Partnership is raising awareness of the dangers of in-car distractions from a mobile phone. Driving while distracted is an increasing problem on Sussex roads with mobile phones now used to make calls, send messages, play music and check road conditions, temptations to use devices while at the wheel are endless. It Can Wait aims to remind drivers that nothing is more important than focussing solely on driving. The campaign is urging drivers to place their phone out

of reach, or set it to silent, before setting off on a journey to ensure they are not distracted or tempted to pick it up while driving. Despite public warnings and the threat of tougher penalties the sight of drivers using hand-held phones is still common, not just in Sussex but nationally. Television recently featured a lorry driver on a motorway slip road using a hand-hand mobile without once looking at the road. Campaign supporters are backing the campaign and spreading the message county-wide. Sussex Police have been running two weeks of enforcement, which close on March 7. Although these will very much be business as usual, it is an opportunity for the police to conduct visible patrols,
focussing on a very relevant subject. East Sussex and West Sussex Fire and Rescue Services will be supporting It Can Wait by focussing on prevention. Firefighters will be out in the community raising awareness of the dangers of distracted driving to encourage all Sussex road users to put their phone out of reach when at the wheel. The combination of prevention campaigning by the fire service and designated enforcement activities by the police aims to reduce the number of people needlessly harmed or killed on our roads due to distracted driving. A spokesman for Sussex Police’s Roads Policing Unit said: “The law states that you can only use a hand-held mobile phone when you are the driver if you need to call 999 or 112. Other than that, you can only use a hand-held device if you are safely parked. You cannot use it when you are stopped at traffic lights or queuing in traffic. These laws are set to keep people safe and alive on the roads. Working in RPU, I have seen far too many incidents where drivers were distracted by their phones – and it’s not worth it. Checking a text seems so insignificant – both at the time, but also once you’ve crashed, and lives have been changed.” People can report drivers using their mobiles to Operation Crackdown via http://www.operationcrackdown.org/.
New club of community servers Signing up
A new club called Interact has arrived at Farlington School in Horsham. It is the Rotary’s International Service club for 12-to 18-yearolds, designed to enable students to organise events and raise money for good causes. Its motto is ‘service above self’ and the club will complete at least two service projects, one of which will be an international project. 17 girls have joined and voted for their leaders. Currently, members are meeting once a week and their focus is to discuss and organise their first charity project. Rotary links 1.2 million members to form an organization of international scope. It started with the vision of one man called Paul Harris. The Chicago lawyer formed the Rotary Club of Chicago in
February 1905, so professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas, form meaningful, lifelong friendships, and give back to their communities. Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of its members. The organisation now has many clubs in Sussex, including the Horsham area, and carries out valuable community work and fund raising.

Exhibition highlights modern Old Master Homer
An exhibition in Horsham Museum is highlighting a modern artist’s mastery of old techniques. Through intensive training and immersion in the techniques of the great painters of the 17th and 18th centuries, award-winning Benjamin Smith captures the essence of old master paintings and translate that to new contemporary visions. The exhibition, called “Silence and Slow Time – the fine art of Benjamin Smith” is now open and runs until March 24. It shows how the techniques of painting, drawing and composition created by the great painters in the European art tradition are still relevant today. The Museum said: “When you see Benjamin Smith’s work in the flesh, when you stand in its presence, you will
Constanza
realise just how powerful these techniques and skills are. “To translate the image through the medium of paint or pencil into an image that stays with you long after first viewing is a powerful ability that few genuinely have. That is why Old Masters have that status, and precisely why Benjamin Smith is an artist whose work you will want to explore again and again.” Amongst the works on display is a powerful portrait of Homer, the great Classical author and founder of European literary tradition. The Museum says: “In Ben’s hand the portrait resonates power, importance and status, giving meaning and depth to the impact Homer had on world culture. And yet, it has been created with nothing more than a simple
pencil and paper. Ben draws on the rich tradition of art academies, where artists perfected their skills through drawing and painting casts, busts and life models, in which the diversity of the human form enabled artists to hone their skills.” The exhibition has a number of such works on display, including a bust of Constanza and life drawings. Ben has written: “In virtually all mainstream art schools, the tradition of drawing and painting from life has died out. “However, a small number of institutions, known as ateliers, in Europe and the United States are seeking to connect with a classical lineage stretching back to the academies of 19th Century Europe and produce a new generation of old masters. “Emerging during the 17th century the atelier system later became a common method of training painters. It is a highly structured and systematic curriculum which is passed on from tutor to student. Students work together, each learning from the others with the tutor tailoring their critiques to the student’s individual requirements. Artists trained in the atelier method are now using those methods to create contemporary representational art of the highest quality.” Horsham Museum is open 10am – 5pm Monday-Saturday, with free admission.

Health top of village facilities agenda
Village residents think health facilities are a priority for people planning its development. More than a thousand Billingshurst residents have already contributed to the preparation of their Parish Neighbourhood Plan. The consultations were launched in June last year, and more public sessions are still to come, with another one at The Weald School. So far health is seen to be the top priority for Billingshurst residents by a margin of 35% over parking and retail (shops),
with education, infrastructure (services) and transport, equal third. These are followed by environment and recreation’, employment’, and then tourism, arts and culture. Parish Clerk Greg Burt, said: “The Steering Committee stresses that the Neighbourhood Plan represents a once-in- ageneration opportunity for every resident to have a real say in future development within the Parish. “The public response has been outstanding and if anyone wants
to ‘get involved’ in producing the Plan in any way, large or small, just contact the Parish office or see www. billingshurst. gov.uk or call 01403 782555”. The Steering Committee canvassed the public at the Billingshurst Show and the Billingshurst Flower Show in the summer, and at BilliFest in December producing a combined 650 responses. Two other public consultations in the High Street and one at the Railway Station produced 265 responses. In addition, 62 businesses responded as well as churches, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Lions Club. A public meeting was held on Saturday and the next are February 16 from 6pm to 9pm and 4 March 4 from noon to 4pm in the Billingshurst Centre, and on February 7 from 5pm to 7pm in the Adversane Hall. Pictured are Communications Team members parish councillor Adam Du Lieu and district councillor Nigel Jupp announcing the next public consultations. The Neighbourhood Plan project started early last year and will take about two years to complete. Concern over women who miss tests Fewer women are undergoing cervical screening for cancer in Sussex as the number of cases rises. In the county 25 per cent of women invited do not bother and the level of cervical cancer is worrying NHS bosses and charities dealing with victims of the disease. The reluctance is most obvious in the younger age group where women are most likely to suffer from the disease. Robert Music, Chief Executive for Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust said: “The number of women in England attending smear tests is at a 19 year low and the number of women being diagnosed with cervical cancer is worryingly high. In Sussex one in four women did not attend their smear test when invited last year and we simply cannot afford for this to continue. Smear tests prevent against 75% of cervical cancers and provide the best protection against the disease. I would encourage every woman to attend this potentially life-saving test when invited and hope that people in Sussex will join our #SmearForSmear campaign to raise awareness of smear tests.” Statistics show that the number of women aged 25-29 years of age being screened for cervical
cancer is the lowest in any age group. Cervical cancer is the most common cancer in women under 35 but is largely preventable because of cervical screening and the HPV vaccination programme. Surveys undertaken by cancer charities point to embarrassment and a lack of understanding of the causes of cervical cancer may be behind the fall in numbers attending. The number of women dying from cervical cancer has halved over the past 28 years as a result of the NHS screening programme as well as improvement in treatment. Despite this success over 5,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year. The majority of women diagnosed have delayed coming forward for screening. This can affect their ability to have early changes treated. Shoreham GP and NHS England Deputy Medical Director for the South East Dr Alison Taylor said: “We have noticed a fall in attendance of younger women over the past few years, and this decline in attendance for screening is now linked to showing a rise in the incidence of cervical cancer in women under 35.”.

Not so horrible geography
Not so horrible geography curriculum. A report compiled by the Geographical Association identified that by integrating literacy skills in geography lessons resulted in a noticeable increase in attainment”. The school said that girls had enthusiastically engaged with this initiative since the beginning of the Spring term. They
have started the term by reading the Horrible Geography series of books written by Anita Ganeri. The series explores geography through stories and fascinating facts which cover Raging Rivers, Earth-Shattering Earthquakes and Cracking Coasts. Students are encouraged to discuss their reading. The school says girls have responded positively to the initiative. Pupil Anna Hammonds said: “It really helps with our reading and we learn something new in every book,” and Emily Higgs said: “It is lovely start to every geography lesson as the Horrible Geography books are funny and full of fascinating facts”. Phoebe Foden said: “It is very enjoyable as it gets you in the mood for geography with exciting stories”. After the February half-term the girls will continue their reading activity at the start of every lesson, and they will read a range of books written by two famous adventurers, Steve Backshall and Bear Grylls. The girls will then move on to reading a selection of inspiring factual books focusing on planet Earth, such as the ‘Guinness Book of World Records’ – Earth section, Tim Peake’s ‘Hello, is this planet Earth?’, and finally the girls will have the opportunity to read a selection of books written by Sir David Attenborough.
Warning issue over scam collections Shops owners have been warned to make sure charity collecting tins on their counters are official. West Sussex Trading Standards issued the reminder after a “pop-up shop” was warned for putting four unofficial charity boxes on show to consumers. Trading Standards visited the shop and tins were found on display with ‘Chichester Children’s Hospital’ marked on it, an organisation which does not exist. Before the crooks could collect their money Trading Standards seized all four tins
and gave the £111.80 collection to a worthwhile cause. The shop owner was warned to use official collection tins in future, verbally and in writing. West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services, David Barling, said: “We do all we can to protect consumers and in this case there was a risk of the public being defrauded. “Retailers display collection tins for such a wide variety of good causes. “But please remember they have to be tins with official labelling.”

Race to stop families losing children centre Women keen to learn car basics
Families with disabled children desperately needing support could lose their Horsham centre if organisers do not find new premises. The Hop Skip and Jump care centre in Horsham has appealed for help in finding somewhere to continue. It will lose its home in the heart of the Swan Walk centre opposite Wilkos to make way for redevelopment, including a
multiplex cinema. The centre provides care, advice and respite for parents with disabled children. So far it has been unable to find any suitable premises, and needs to find them soon to be ready for any move. Spokeswoman CJ Mortimer, who has a daughter Grace, five, with special needs, told the Post: “We are allowed to be in our current location until Decem-
ber. But obviously if we can find somewhere suitable , we would like to move as soon possible. “We would really preferably like to have something with outdoor facilities, perhaps an empty school or nursery building. “We are desperate to stay in Horsham. We have been to the council, we have been to meetings, they just keep telling us there is nothing.” The centre contains a soft play area, sensory facilities and a fully accessible wet room and changing facility, meaning that Hop Skip and Jump can cater for children with a variety of complex disabilities and special educational needs. If needed, parents can leave their children at the centre to give themselves a break. Horsham District Council, the North Horsham Council Local Committee and the Sussex Masonic Charities supported the centre when it opened, and it worked with AVIVA Investors, Simons Group and the district council to redevelop empty premises to start the centre. Anyone able to help the centre find a new home is asked to contact CJ through e mail at marcoms@hopskipandjump. org.uk. uk or telephone 01403 263660.

JoJo Maman Bébé Local community celebrate launch charity initiative of Horsham’s newest care home
From a Mother to Another, the initiative from JoJo Maman Bébé, will start collecting again on February 22, in a bid to reduce the shocking levels of clothing waste that end up in a landfill, whilst helping those in need in the UK (with distribution via Trussell Trust food banks) and thousands of Syrian refugees living in Lebanon. JoJo will be collecting good quality outgrown or unwanted baby and children’s clothes (in sizes 0-6 years) and children’s shoes. Customers are requested to make up complete outfits, with shoes in a separate bag and donate at one of 80 stores across the UK and Ireland. A full list of stores can be found via: http://www.jojomamanbebe.co.uk/stores. Nearly a third of the UK’s clothing ends up in landfill, equating to 350,000 tonnes a year. By extending the life of clothes by just three months of active use, organisers claim that carbon and water waste could be reduced by up to 5-10% a year. Sending good quality, little worn hand-me-downs to those in need would mean they are worn by many more children, extending the clothes lifespan. In the UK the emergency clothing packs will be distributed by some of the Trussell Trust’s 420 Foodbanks. In Lebanon the packs will be distributed by a number of partner charities on the ground. Helen Frank’s from Trussell Trust commented: “I am delighted Trussell Trust Foodbanks will be participating in the From A Mother To Another campaign for the second year running, it is a natural fit to The Trussell Trust’s ‘More Than Food’ approach, which offers additional services to help alleviate poverty in the UK. Over a third of three-day emergency food supplies provided by Trussell Trust foodbanks go to children in crisis. Last year the packs were gratefully received by over 1000 families” Laura Tenison, founder & CEO of JoJo, visited refugee camps in the Bekaa Valley on the Lebanese Syrian border in early 2016. Laura explained what she found when visiting the camps: “The situation is dire and has not improved over
the last 12 months. The millions of women and children living in makeshift tents are in urgent need of emergency humanitarian aid to help until it is safe to travel home just a few miles across the border. They left Syria with whatever they could carry. Their children have outgrown their clothes long ago and are often in rags. The gift of a FAMTA pack brings tears of gratitude. Children are dying from the cold, we just had to help.” JoJo Maman Bébé will cover the extensive costs of checking, sorting, shipping, customs clearance and managing the logistics of delivering the parcels to the partner charities in Lebanon and to the Trussell Trust’s Foodbanks across the UK. For full details of how to donate visit http://www. jojomamanbebe.co.uk/FAMTA
The people of Horsham were invited to celebrate the grand launch of the town’s newest care home, opened by a VIP guest. On January 19, the local community enjoyed a host of entertainment at Skylark House on St Marks Lane, as part of its opening celebrations. The Care UK team was joined by Mark Spofforth OBE, High Sheriff of West Sussex, who was in attendance to officially open the care home. Guests were treated to a special performance from children at Holbrook Primary School, and local jazz band, Gershwin Gang, who were on hand to play some of the resident’s favourite songs. Guests were also given the opportunity to get up close with animals from the Hawking
Centre, including birds of prey, a friendly skunk and a tame lizard, and enjoyed a demonstration with the birds from the handlers. Those who attend the event also had the chance to meet the team at Skylark house and take a tour of the care home, as well as enjoy a selection of tasty treats made by the home’s head chef. Skylark House home manager, Devendra Lallchand, said: “We were delighted to have a visit from the High Sheriff of West Sussex to officially open the home and mark this important milestone. We would also like to thank the
children from Holbrook Primary School, the Hawking Centre and Gershwin Gang for helping to make this such a special event. “Since we opened the doors to Skylark, our residents and their families are at the heart of everything we do, including the launch celebrations. It was fantastic to welcome so many local people to Skylark House, and our grand launch was a day to remember.” For more information on Skylark House, please call Karen Davies on 01403 887578, email karen.davies@careuk.com or visit careuk.com/skylark-house.

The Dublin Sessions Tour March 2017: Irish Folk Music at its very best
The Dublin Legends (Formerly of The Dubliners) will celebrate the St. Patrick’s Day period with a 16 date March UK Tour, and will be visiting Horsham’s Capitol on March 20. In 2012 The Dubliners celebrated 50 years on the road, but following the sudden death of founding member, Barney McKenna, and John Sheehan’s’ decision to retire, it was agreed that The Dubliners, as a touring band, would come to an end and ‘The Dublin Legends’ were born. The Dublin Legends, Sean Cannon, Eamonn Campbell, Paul Watchorn & Gerry OConnor, have over 60 years of performing with The Dubliners between them and will continue to play all the classic songs and ballads known the world over; Whiskey in The Jar, Dirty Old Town, The Wild Rover, Seven Drunken Nights, The Rare Auld Times, Molly Malone, The Irish Rover, Black Velvet Band & many more. fer, free of charge. Established in 1992, the course is considered by many to be a hidden gem and one that, in the last year, has enjoyed significant investment on and off course. Over the weekend there will be an opportunity to play 18 holes
for free, take a free basket of balls onto the Driving Range, have an assessment with resident PGA Professional, Jonathan Groves, as well as meet the members at the friendly, family orientated club. There will also be special one-off membership deals on offer over the weekend, for those that fall in love with the course and facilities, including two months’ free golf for those signing-up during the event. Sara Blunden, who co-owns the course with husband Clive, said: “This is a friendly and relaxed club that we have put considerable investment into over the last 10 months, resulting in a vastly improved course and more welcoming clubhouse which is open to everyone. We have a well stocked bar, including several local real ales, and we pride ourselves in offering delicious fresh home cooked food, all locally sourced, and much of it from our own farm. “The clubhouse is open to everyone and is proving a popular venue for that ‘special event’. We very much look forward to welcoming those new to Rusper, and perhaps those that saw the club in previous years, to see what great shape it’s in today.” For more information, please contact: Rusper Golf Club, Rusper Road, Newdigate, Surrey RH5 5BX, call: 01293 871 871 or visit: www. ruspergolfclub.co.uk; Twitter: @RusperGolfClub; Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ruspergolfclub/

Enjoy the Best of Both Worlds with Carfax Convenience and Country Views Having to get the car out to drive anytime you need or want to go anywhere, whether it’s for work, school or pleasure, is not all it’s cracked up to be. Not only does it eat away at your
time, even for short journeys, but you have to think about the practicalities of petrol, parking, and planning how to be in three different places at once, only to find you are running on fumes
with an empty tank! And if for any reason, you suddenly can’t drive or the car is off the road through a service or accident, it’s a real shock to have to rely on other people or public transport solutions that don’t always meet your needs or destinations, to deal with that sudden loss of independence not only for you but for everyone in the family. So what if you could combine all the benefits of being within easy walking distance of Horsham town centre, station and schools, with a lovely detached home enjoying views over surrounding countryside, set in a private cul-de-sac, and with its own garage and ample driveway so you can still choose when and where you use the car and have parking for visitors. Take advantage NOW of a rare opportunity to really enjoy the best of both worlds and get the individually designed home you always wanted in a bespoke non-estate setting. The Gorings is a bespoke project of only 4 detached homes, and with 1 already gone off plan, established local bespoke housebuilder Churchlands is launching
the remaining 3, luxury 4-bedroom detached homes properties. Inside, these special homes are presented to an exceptionally high standard, and include a comprehensive quality specification; bespoke fitted kitchen and utility room with integrated appliances, wine chiller and Samsung American style fridge/ freezer, a dual heating system with underfloor heating to the ground floor and radiators with individual thermostats to the first floor, fully tiled contemporary bathrooms with designer sanitary ware and tiles, and the benefits of CAT 6 wiring. The rear gardens enjoy an open aspect and are laid mainly to lawn with an attractive paved terrace, simply perfect for enjoying the peaceful setting and views. Come and talk to us on Saturday between 11 and 4pm to make your dream combination a reality. June will be at The Gorings, off Gorings Mead between these times and can be called on 07557851535 to book an appointment or just drop to see for yourself.

Huge charity donation from Cottesmore Ladies Ladies Golrf Cottesmore’s outgoing Lady Captain, Ruth Leatherbarrow, has presented a cheque for £7,143.03 to David Lilburn MBE, Chairman of Trustees of Help Our Wounded Royal Marines, and the chosen charity for her year. This was in addition to a cheque for £1,325 presented last summer and brings the final total to an amazing £8,468.03 from Ruth’s year.
Ruth said, ‘The total amount raised is overwhelming. All the ladies took this charity to their hearts and recognised how personal it was to me with my son Tom being in the Royal Marines.” Many of the ladies took on specific challenges to raise funds. Margaret Brice ran 3 x 10km in 3 days raising £1,325, Heather Skinner & Jill Lewis played a 54 hole Foursomes Challenge raising £670, Iona McKean, Ros Bird, Viv Lyons, Catherine Malins, Sue Taylor and
Ruth completed a 25km walk raising £1,065, Christine Knight ran 3 quiz nights raising £960, and Naomi Zoob quit smoking, which raised £423. In addition, the Club Pro-Am event added £975, and cake and home produce sales, raffles, and clothing sales raised a further £3,050. This was Ruth’s final task before handing over the badge of office and Captain’s keys to the Lady Captain for 2017, Margaret Swatman.

Junior Football Round Up
Steyning U18 0 – 4 Roffey U18 Roffey stormed their way into the Arun & Chichester U18 cup final with this convincing semi-final win over league rivals Steyning. Roffey quickly adapted to the 3G artificial pitch and the breakthrough came in the 16th minute when George Chantrill’s well-placed shot found the bottom corner of the goal. Roffey’s second came from an indirect free kick that Joe McGrane rolled to Alex Barker who smashed the ball into the net. In the second half Roffey made it three after a fumble by the keeper let David Wood’s shot to creep over the line and then Matt Knowles completed the comfortable win with the fourth. The win puts Roffey, who are currently top of their league, in a strong position for a league and cup double. Henfield U13 3 - 3 Chesworth Rovers U13 Chesworth visited Henfield who had spent pre-season strengthening their squad and this performance showed how far they have
come. After taking the lead early on in the match Chesworth were forced to fight back, Nyle Barton scoring with a wonderful strike outside the box. Henfield struck again before half time giving Chesworth everything to do in the second half. Keeper Leo Anderson kept Chesworth in the match with some great saves, and Barton struck again to make it 2-2. Seb Holt then struck with his first of the season to give Chesworth the lead with minute remaining. Henfield then broke Chesworth hearts with an equaliser with the last kick of the game. Chesworth remain top of the division. Horsham Sparrows U9 – The team played the second weekend of a tournament that saw multiple games. With 4 draws and 2 losses, the team are improving with every game. Horsham Sparrows U13 – The team guaranteed at least second place and promotion after a 7-2 home victory against a determined Ashington Cougars. Ollie
struck first by incredibly heading a goal kick straight back into the net, the first of his 2, a tally matched by Gustav and added to by Hugh in a high scoring first half in which Cougars also hit 2. A tightened up defence in the second half helped by goals from Louis and Liam ensured the win. MoM: George Horsham Sparrows U15 – Due to the weather, Sparrows played their first match of the year in a friendly against Steyning. In a very even first half both sides went close before Jacob put Sparrows ahead with a delightful chip after half an hour. With the wind behind them Sparrows dominated the second half and goals from Mark, George, Joe and Tom gave the team a comfortable 5-0 win. MoM: Jacob. Horsham Sparrows U16 – A strong first half performance from Sparrows was dashed by 2 quick goals from Ashington Cougars although a goal from Harry B made it more even at the break. The second half saw further Sparrows pressure and another goal from Harry M but the visitors scored twice again to take the points Horsham Sparrows U11 girls – The team faced Hollingbury Hawks at Greenway Academy and had to come from behind 4 times to eventually take the points. 2 goals on her debut from Priya, 2 from Briony and one for Issy sealed a great team performance. Horsham Sparrows Women’s Team – A very entertaining game played on a tacky pitch saw Pagham avenge their pre-Christmas defeat. An early goal for Pagham playing was doubled when their centre forward ghosted through the sparrows defence on the stroke of half time. Playing with the wind Sparrows dominated the second half but the only reward was a solitary goal from Imy.
Atlantis relay team break county records The Atlantis 12 & 13 year old girls A team
Swimming Dave Smith - Sports Editor Atlantis Swimming Club competed at the County Relay Championships which is the start of the County Swimming Championships which will take place over the next month. In the 10 and 11 year old age group the Atlantis boys were seeded number one going into
the competition and a good result was anticipated, but unfortunately they were disqualified in both of their races. The 10 and 11 year old girls managed to reach the finals in their events with some good individual performances. The 12 and 13 year old boys also managed to make the finals however once again a technical error forced another disqualification while the girls B
team did well to make the finals and the U16 girls and boys teams managed three final appearances between them. In competition with some very strong opposition the senior boys’ team made up of Matt Boyes, Edward Hundleby, Aiden Sparling, Andrew Kershaw and James Hartley secured a brace of forth places in the finals. The senior girls team of Freya Fulcher, Lily Davis, Zoe Cawsey and Gaby Eltham fought hard to win a well-deserved bronze medal and when joined by Beth Britton the senior girls secured a superb silver medal in the freestyle event. The most outstanding result of the day came from the 12 and 13 year old girls A team, made up of Amber Ranson, Amelia Stone, Issy Hayes and Olivia Round Pitman who led all of their races straight off the blocks, winning gold medals in each of their events whilst breaking the county records in both the freestyle and medley. Atlantis now looks forward to the individual competition in February where the club hopes to see some of their swimmers crowned as county champions.

Cross country success for Academy Junior Cross Country Southwater Junior Academy had a day to remember at the Cross Country events, held at Christs Hospital, winning both the girls’ and boys’ events. In the girls race, where there was over 130 runners taking part, the Southwater girls excelled with all 6 of them finishing in the top 18. Showing a great improvement on her 44th placed finish of last year Elsie Hill recorded a superb 6th place and was followed closely by Nicole Saunders and Honey Thomson who came 8th and 9th respectively. The 2 Jess’
finished 12th and 13th and Beth Morgan, who had never previously represented the school in any sport, was 18th. In the boys’ event, SJA’s Harry Lee dominated from the start finally finishing a long way ahead of the rest of the field to take the gold medal. Max Nunn finished 8th, while George Bowler came 20th, shortly followed by George Goodenough-Bayly finishing 22nd. Harrison Churchill finished 33rd, while unfortunately Josh Eves was taken ill during the race, and was unable to finish. All twelve runners were excellent on the day and represented their school superbly.

Pulborough clear second after double over Sheppey London 3 South East Pulborough 28 - 14 Sheppey Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Pulborough strengthened their runners up spot, putting clear water between themselves and Lewes after doing the double over mid table Sheppey. In October Boro made the 165 mile round trip to Minster-on-Sea to beat Sheppey 18-25, only for Sheppey to trounce them in the cup the following week - but, there were no such alarms last Saturday, when Boro inflicted the visitor’s fourth straight league defeat and their sixth in eight games. Coming into the match Boro were on equal points with third placed Lewes, only shading them on goal difference but league leaders Thanet Wanderers did Boro a favour by beating
Lewes 16-12 in east Kent. But, at Cootham it was Sheppey who scored first, Captain Simon Burfiend telling the District Post: “Their large pack dominated, not giving Boro much opportunity to get the ball out and play in the backs, but we bounced back, yet we were frustrated when we did manage to get the ball into the backline and the game started to open up. Overall, though, it was great to get a win with the bonus point – a good sign!” Boro’s four tries came from Will Truscott and Charlie Denman, plus a brace from Brad Game. Simon Burfiend’s boot was in good form as he successfully racked up the four conversions. Boro next take to the field, in a home match, against lowly Eastbourne tomorrow week, February 11. In October Boro beat Eastbourne 45 – 17 in East Sussex.

Nightmare finale scuppers Horsham
Michael Tredgett scored Horsham’s try London 2 South East Charlton Park 49 - 10 Horsham Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham started well, taking an early lead but collapsed in the last phase of the game, gifting
points at Greenwich after Charlton Park had tasted blood. When Michael Tredgett opened the scoring with a try, converted by Horsham Captain Tom Johnson, who subsequently kicked a penalty, there was no hint of what was to come. But, then Horsham’s well ran dry with no
further points. Yet, there was still all to play for at half time although the hosts were 25-10 to the good, Horsham prevented them from scoring again right up to the 72nd minute – only for Charlton Park to run amok, capitalising on some loose Horsham mistakes to get over the line four times in the last eight minutes. Frustrated Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker told the District Post: “We started so well, putting them under pressure for the first 20 minutes, then we missed opportunities – we should have doubled our score to be near level pegging at the break. Even so, we were still very much in the game, until we completely shut off just when it really mattered. We needed to assert ourselves at the end but instead we rolled over. That was a harsh lesson, telling us that we need to change our approach!” Horsham return to action on Saturday February 11 with a home game against bottom club Crowborough, whom they defeated 28 – 15 in East Sussex in October. The Crows, heavily beaten by runaway league leaders Medway last Saturday, have the unenviable record of scoring fewer points and conceding more than any other team in the league.
Woolley hat trick as Horsham stun high flying Havant
Horsham on the up despite narrow defeat South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division 1 Maidenhead Ladies 3 - 2 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter In their first league game since the Christmas and New Year break started on November 26, Horsham Ladies fought back from a two goal deficit but defensive errors prevented them from sharing the points, Maidenhead doing the double after beating Horsham at home in September. But, there were encouraging signs for Horsham, Elle Blakesley scoring in open play after being set up by Alicia Remfry. Maidenhead, though went further ahead until Becky Williams converted a short corner in the final minute, ending the game 3-2 in the hosts’ favour. Elle told the District Post: “This was a good game against spirited opposition. Goalkeeper Hannah
Simpson and Louisa Denman were joint Players of the Match and it was pretty even with both sides playing well, but lapses in concentration hurt us.” Team Manager Jane Denman added: “It was great for us to welcome back Gill Adams after she’s been out for over a year with a serious injury. And, fantastic news – we’ve now got England International Nick Catlin coaching us – look out for Horsham, we’re back!” Catlin has appeared for Great Britain and England on over 150 occasions, including at the 2012 Olympics. He is regarded as one of the most skilful dribblers in the world game, has played for Racing Bruxelles and now represents powerhouse East Grinstead. Horsham Ladies, now 7th return to Broadbridge Heath on Saturday (tomorrow) for their first home game for two months – against 5th placed Reading, to whom they lost 2-0 in Berkshire on October 1. Reading drew 0-0 with Oxford University last Saturday and have conceded just 8 goals all season, a record only bettered by league leaders Barnes.

Pamment brace sinks YM SCFL Premier Division Pagham 3 – 1 Horsham YMCA Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor
Photo by Nick Evans South League - Premier - Division 1 Havant 2 - 4 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Enigmatic Horsham, who lost seven games on the trot up to Christmas, looking all but relegated, thrilled Team Manager Al Campbell with what he described as: “A really great win against the current runners up. It’s fantastic to do the double over them, after we beat them at Broadbridge Heath in October.” Horsham are the second lowest goal scorers in the league but this
was not apparent when they took the lead in the sixth minute after player coach Dom Male hit a long through ball for Ellis Woolley to jink and nail it. Just before half time Havant converted a short corner to equalise, but parity was short lived. On the re-start Freddie Campbell passed to John Burroughs on the half way line, JB beat half the opposition side, enabling Woolley to score on the rebound. Again Havant drew level, but not for long – in a big run down the right Barney Knights Johnson supplied Sean Pearcy, who restored Horsham’s lead. Woolley then posted a hat trick, slotting home a short corner, Al Campbell enthusing: “A terrific result for us – it’s interesting
that in our last two game we’ve taken four points from the top two sides. We defended superbly, Dan Humphreys was exceptional and Andy Isaacs had a great game, too.” Skipper Isaacs added: “We really worked hard – we always do against the top teams. We need to replicate that every week!” Horsham return home tomorrow (Saturday) to take on Banbury in a lower table clash, both teams nervously hoping to survive in Premier Division 1 - the teams drew 3-3 at the last encounter. Banbury have let in 47 goals and are 11th - one place below Horsham on goal difference - and last Saturday lost 3-1, bottom club Guildford securing their first win from 12 games.
The inconsistency shown by Horsham YMCA this season was again evident in this match as they crashed 3-1 at fourth placed Pagham. Having not played since January 10th YM could have been forgiven for being a bit rusty, however if Peter Buckland’s side are to make any major improvement on their current tenth place in the division then they will need to quickly put together a good long winning run. This was a strange game with all the goals coming in stoppage time, two in the first half and two in the second. Ex Horsham striker Keiron Pamment scored two in a minute during the 5 minute first half added time to give his side a
two goal advantage and leaving YM with a mountain to climb. In an attempt to get his side back into the match Buckland made a triple substitution midway through the second half with Familton, Cook and Evans being replaced by Shipton, Buchanan and Hole. Just when it looked as though the match would be decided solely by Pamment’s brace YM pulled a goal back one minute into stoppage time when Ash Dugdale got his head to Dave Brown’s corner. The revival was short lived however as virtually straight from the restart George Cody hit Pagham’s third goal to wrap up the three points for his side. YM will be looking to start a much needed run of victories with this Saturday’s home match against lowly Arundel, and then to hopefully start the climb up the table.

Josh Pelling saves a penalty
Heath’s winning run ends in surprising defeat SCFL Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 1 - 3 AFC Uckfield Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor
Photos by John Lines Ryman Football League South Division Horsham 1 - 1 East Grinstead Town Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham led the game from early until late, only to be denied the three points when East Grinstead scored with ten minutes left. But, the Hornets extended their unbeaten run to eight league games – five wins and three draws. Both sides had similar chances, yet it was a fairly lack lustre encounter. Belying their 19th position, East Grinstead had the
first shot of the match, blazing over and challenged again when the ball was threaded through Horsham’s midfield. Then a Darren Boswell blast from a free kick was palmed round the post for a corner, which was not completely cleared, enabling Charlie Palmer to put Horsham in front from close range on the left. Grinstead responded with two ineffectual forays until their centre forward Tashie Kwayie hit the deck in the box in a contest with Horsham skipper Ash Jones, but Josh Pelling dived correctly, saving Marcus Elliott’s penalty low to his left. Corners followed at each end and Pelling rushed out to stop a
drive with his feet before Elliott found the net, but only after the ref had blown for offside. Just before the break an innocuous looking Grinstead free kick was pushed off for their third corner but it was safely gathered by Pelling. On the resumption a Boswell shot was somehow averted. An inventive Grinstead back-heel was then saved before a Farmer through ball set up Lawley to no avail. Boswell and Farmer challenged but Grinstead’s forwards were having a quiet time – until, seemingly from nowhere, Elliott latched onto a Travis Gregory cross to head home the equal-
iser. A Grinstead push was neutralised before a valiant Lawley run and a George Branford free kick came to nought as Horsham pressure was kept at bay with both sides relieved to share the points. Horsham Coach Ian Browne said: “A fair enough result really – they’re a better side than their position suggests and we were unbeaten again.” On Saturday (tomorrow) the Hornets, now 12th on goal difference behind South Park, travel to 4th in the table Carshalton Town, to whom they lost 3-1 at home last August. I’m really thrilled about it – I started playing at Horsham when I was seven and have always regarded it as my cricket home, even when I was playing for Sussex and is a student of the game, so he’s a good choice.” And Michael says: “I’m really thrilled about it – I started playing at Horsham when I was seven and have always regarded it as my cricket home, even when I was
playing for Sussex.” Michael has just turned 29 and played at Horsham with brothers Andrew and Jamie before graduating to Sussex, debuting against the Indians at Hove. After leaving Sussex he played for Unicorns, taking a century off Somerset and almost repeating the feat against Nottinghamshire, which led to a contract with Leicestershire, for whom he scored 113 and 97 in his first team debut. In all right handed batsman and occasional medium pacer Michael played 98 games in the different county formats. In 2015 he played for London side Blackheath, with whom he won the National Knockout Cup and then re-joined Horsham last season, scoring 151 in the Premier League against Worthing. But, it was Michael’s consistent exploits in the Sussex Cup that really set the club alight – his 361 runs including 106 against Bognor and an incredible 47 ball unbeaten 98 against Preston Nomads in the Quarter Final, when he rescued Horsham from a parlous 20-5. Michael Thornely summed up saying: “We’re taking steps to strengthen Horsham’s side and I’m really looking forward to the season!”

Heath came into the game in excellent form following four straight league wins that helped them maintain 6th place in the Premier Division. However, Manager Steve Painter had warned his players before the game not to underestimate the visitors who they had already beaten 4-0 in the reverse fixture and defeated 1-0 in the Cup. An evenly contested first half saw Heath play more direct football than their opponents creating the majority of the goal scoring opportunities while Uckfield had more possession but lacked any real threat in front of goal. Dean Wright’s 10th minute shot from 30 yards almost opened the scoring for Heath but it went narrowly wide of the post. Minutes later Jake Holmes combined well with Scott Weller but ‘keeper Matt Dann was off his line quickly to block the shot and then minutes before the break Dann was again off his line quickly to deny Jamal Sultan. Heath came close to breaking the deadlock just minutes into the restart when Joe Holvey’s shot came off the inside of the post, spun across the face of the goal and out for a goal kick. The visitors then went straight up the other end and from a Matt Mclean cross from the ball was hammered into the net by Andrew Hales. Uckfield’s Craig Norman made it 2-0 in the 59th minute with a powerful header and 3 minutes later it was 3-0 with Norman getting his second headed goal from a Bayley Colbran chip to the far post. Tim Martin reduced the deficit from the penalty spot with 10 minutes remaining and from then on Heath lay siege to the Uckfield goal. Dann saved brilliantly from Ollie Moore and Marlon Maxwell and two efforts were cleared off the goal-line but the visitors defence held firm. Painter had no complaints about the result saying “Had Holvey scored when he hit the post we would probably have gone on and won the game but once they took the lead they simply wanted it more than us, they were quicker to the ball and in the final minutes they defended as if their lives depended on it”. He said “I’m disappointed and we’ll now have to go to Shoreham next week and try to get something from that game which won’t be easy”.
