Views sought on £150million Horsham scheme Thousands of residents will have their rubbish recycled at a Horsham site if a £150million scheme is approved. And the firm hoping to build it says people will not see much change in the view. Britaniacrest Recycling Limited has submitted its planning application for a recycling, recovery and renewable energy facility, known as 3Rs, at its present waste transfer station at Langhurstwood Road, Horsham. Currently the site only bulks up and loads material to be recycled and processed at other sites, with some aggregate processing being carried out. The application will be considered by West Sussex County Council. The new facility will enable Britaniacrest to recycle about 50,000 tonnes of waste a year and generate electricity from the remaining waste up to 180,000 tonnes a year, reducing residual waste going to landfill. Chris Foss, from Britaniacrest said: “The site is unique in a number of ways. “We are not seeking to increase the permitted HGV traffic movements we currently have or increase the currently permitted 230,000 tonnes of waste we can process and it is a nominated site in the West Sussex Waste Local Plan. “We just need the infrastructure on this site to enable us to recycle what can be recycled, and convert the remaining waste to renewable energy. “The site is hidden from view and is flanked by a landfill, a Mechanical Biological Waste treatment plant and a brickworks.”

“‘It is a previously used brownfield site and already hosts various waste management activities. “We have carried out extensive studies on the proposal, which show it to have net positive environmental benefits. Weal-

den Works is, therefore, a very suitable location for this type of development.” If it gets the go ahead, the “3Rs” will take about three years to build and require an investment of about £150Million. As with all waste processing sites,

the “3Rs” will be heavily regulated and will require permits to operate from the Environment Agency to ensure the site does not cause nuisance and is safe. Details on the proposals can be obtained from the Britaniacrest Recycling website on http://www.

Help offered to defeat diabetes West Sussex residents at risk of type-2 diabetes are to be offered healthy-lifestyle support to help them prevent the condition developing. The scheme will see people offered 13 sessions focusing on exercise, education and lifestyle changes. West Sussex County Council, Coastal West Sussex, Horsham and Mid Sussex and Crawley Clinical Commissioning Groups are working together on the Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme. The national programme is a collaboration between Public Health England, Diabetes UK and NHS England. GPs are being asked to identify residents who would benefit the most from the programme. This will be done through patient registers and referrals from the NHS Health Check programme. While type-1 diabetes cannot be prevented and is not linked to lifestyle, type-2 often is. About 430,000 people are considered to be at risk of developing it across Kent, Surrey and Sussex, according to NHS England. Christine Field, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Wellbeing, said: “I would encourage people to take up this scheme if you are offered it. You will get personalised support on

improving your lifestyle habits, including getting more exercise, a better balanced diet and losing and keeping off excess weight – which all help people to take more control of their health and ultimately prevent them developing what is potentially a life threatening condition.” Ingeus is the selected provider for the South East region, and has been running Healthier You programmes in a number of locations around the country. The programme has been launched in the Coastal West Sussex area and will start in the Mid Sussex and Crawley areas in January. Dr Karen Eastman, Clinical Director for NHS Horsham and Mid Sussex CCG, said: “In Healthier You, the atmosphere is friendly and informal. It’s a unique group based programme, and although everyone is different there will be others in the same boat as you, facing similar lifestyle circumstances. “The facilitators are there to help you increase your knowledge and understanding of what being at risk of type-2 diabetes means for you, empowering you to lose weight and increase exercise in ways that work for you. Throughout the programme you will be the person in control making the decisions and positive on-going lifestyle changes.”

Students tackle racism The Towers youngsters

Youngsters from Towers school at Upper Beeding are playing their part in tackling racism and religious discrimination. The subjects were top of the democracy agenda for young people in West Sussex who gathered to discuss the issues which mattered to them the most. The meeting was part of a Democracy Day ‘takeover challenge’ hosted by the West Sussex Youth Cabinet which provided the opportunity for young people to have their voices heard. The event, which happens once a year, also provides a platform for the Youth Cabinet to raise awareness of the importance of democracy and the democratic process. The event, held in Horsham, was opened by Kelly Balmer, UK Youth Parliament representative for the South East Procedures Group, and Stephen Hillier, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Children - Start of Life. Both spoke of the importance of young people becoming active citizens and the importance of democracy. Stephen Hillier said: “I was very privileged to go along to an event where young people were openly passionate, whilst admirably articulate, about the issues that affect them. There were a number of issues which were hotly debated - adding life skills to the curriculum, improving mental health services for young people, and tackling racism and religious discrimination. “Their enthusiasm was infec-

tious and hopefully, as a group, we can tackle some of these issues head on. We are already making sure these discussions are fed back to County Council’s Children’s Services to help us inform the design of current and future provisions.” There were 57 young people who attended the day aged 11 to 18 years from The Towers Convent School, Rydon Community College, Worthing High School, Hazelwick School, St Philip Howard Catholic School, West Sussex Alternative Provision Centre, and West Sussex Young People’s Service. The issues discussed were chosen through the recent national ‘Make Your Mark’ ballot in which 18,302 votes were cast in West Sussex. Kelly Balmer, UK Youth Parliament representative for the South East Procedures Group, said: “Encouraging young people into politics is vital. West Sussex’s Democracy Day enabled them to do so and see the affect they can make.” During the day, there were also workshops which looked at designing the new sex and relationships digital curriculum services, and creating resources to build young people’s resilience to online radicalisation and extremism. Young jailbirds help children A school’s annual tradition provided a cash boost of more than £5,000 for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. For the last 32 years Steyning Grammar School has held a ‘jail break’ which involves sixth form students wearing fancy dress breaking out of their classrooms for a day of fundraising. The great escape involves the ‘convicts’ evading capture from teachers dressed up as prison guards before fleeing the grounds in hired vehicles such as cars, vans, buses, tractors and dumpster trucks. Once free the teenagers make their way around Sussex with collection buckets to raise as much money as they can in two hours

before being rounded up and returned to the school, in Shooting Field, West Sussex, to count up the money. The amount raised is donated alternately to a cancer charity or a children’s charity. This year 215 students took part in the event. Their efforts lead to a total of £5,513.04 being raised for the NSPCC charity. Sally Randall, Head of Sixth Form, said: “We are enormously proud of our Year 13 students who have willingly and enthusiastically given their time to support the NSPCC which is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its Childline service. “The students’ resilience and grit throughout the planning and actual day are a testament to how much they have to offer in the future. We

know they will flourish.” Moira Mitchell, Community Fundraising Manager for Sussex, said: “This is such a great fundraising event which sees the whole community pulling together and having fun while raising money for such a great cause. “We are incredibly grateful to Steyning Grammar School for the amount it has raised this year for the NSPCC. “Every penny raised helps fund NSPCC services such as Childline and Speak Out. Stay Safe which teaches primary school children about abuse and who they can turn to for help including Childline. So far the service has reached 18,511 children in West Sussex through 147 unique school visits which is remarkable.”

Generosity of youngsters helps less well off Disadvantaged young people had a cheerier time at Christmas and New Year break because of the efforts of students. Pupils at Collyer’s collected enough Christmas goodies to make up 42 shoe boxes for charity. The campaign for 2016 was coordinated by the student council, now known as the Richard Collyer Union. The boxes were donated to the Y-centre in Horsham, run by the YMCA. Union officers Esme Cairns, Niall Mulligan and Laura Travers, assisted by union manager Clare Ruaux, have spent the last few weeks managing the campaign, collecting and wrapping the shoe boxes. At the end of term Clare Ruaux distributed them. Clare Ruaux said: “The boxes have been gratefully received by the brilliant staff down at the Y Centre, who were struck by the generosity of the Collyer’s community. People at Collyer’s really care and I’m incredibly proud of the work of Esme, Niall and Laura, who have given up so much time to this year’s Shoe Box Campaign.” Collyer’s Vice Principal Melanie Russell said: “Huge thanks to the

RCU, Clare and the Collyer’s community for making this happen,

particularly during such a busy time at the end

Thief steals television on Christmas Day Police are investigating after a 42” television was reported to have been stolen from a flat in Butts Meadow, Wisborough Green, on Christmas Day. It is believed a ladder was used to gain access through an upstairs bathroom window between 10am and 10.30pm while the property was empty. The TV, believed to be worth about £330, was taken from the lounge. Detective Constable Jon Tizzard said: “Nothing else was stolen from the property. I would like to hear from anyone who was in the area and who saw any suspicious activity. “We are also keen to recover the television set which is described as a Panasonic model TX40CX400B.” People can report any details online here quoting reference 889 of 25/12.

Councils calling land owners Gifts from special trust base or equivalent. d) An understanding of how the site would be accessed by vehicle and opportunities for linking in with existing footpath/pavement and cycle routes e) Any relevant planning history for the site, e.g. extant planning permissions that have not been brought forward. f) Any legal issues such as covenants restricting the use of the land. g) Whether there are any restrictions to your site coming forward in the short term. This is not just a call for housing sites. We are also keen to see sites put forward that support growth in both employment opportunities and leisure facilities, together with land for wider community use including healthcare. It is important that you submit your sites as part of the Neighbourhood Plan process because it could establish the principle of development of the land in question for that particular use. At present, much of the land around Billingshurst is not established as land for development and so is unlikely to have a good prospect of securing planning permission for development; an allocation would change that. Equally however, it is important that the sites which are

allocated contribute towards achieving the vision and objectives of the Neighbourhood Plan, as set by the community. At present the vision and objectives have not yet been established but as this takes shape, we will be looking to understand which sites contribute most towards achieving this. If you have already made a submission to Horsham District Council in respect of its Strategic Housing and Employment Land Availability Assessment (SHELAA), we request that you also make a submission to the Billingshurst Parish Neighbourhood Plan process if you wish for the site to be considered for allocation within the Neighbourhood Plan. The Neighbourhood Plan is focusing on potential local – as opposed to strategic – scale allocations so this is particularly important for small (non-strategic) sites. If you do not submit your site to the Billingshurst Parish Neighbourhood Plan Call for Sites process then there is no guarantee that it will be considered through this process. We require all submissions to be made in writing by 16th January 2017. Submissions must be made in writing to Billingshurst Parish Council or by email to clerk@billingshurst.gov.uk.”

Cllr Mitchell presents Majors Ann and Iain Stewart from Horsham branch of Salvation Army with a cheque. Deserving families have received a boost from a special charity fund. The Horsham District Council’s Chairman’s Charitable Trust has awarded funds to several deserving families. The funds have been made available as a result of the council’s Chief Executive Tom Crowley successfully completing a charity cycle ride earlier in the year, reported in the Post. The council’s Chairman, Cllr Christian Mitchell presented a cheque for £1,000 to Majors Ann and Iain Stewart from the Horsham branch of the Salvation Army in the council’s Parkside offices in Chart Way, Horsham. This donation will enable them to organise presents

for local children in foster and adoption homes. Horsham Salvation Army also provides Christmas lunch and presents for the elderly in the district who find Christmas a very lonely time, thanks to funds made available from the Chairman’s Charitable Trust. Additionally, five local families were assisted with funding to assist them over the Christmas period with the purchase of food and Christmas gifts. The Chairman’s Charitable Trust is a fund for people in need in the district who fall outside existing statutory and charitable provision.

A parish council wants to hear from land owners keen to put forward land for development. Spokesman for Billingshurst Parish Council said: “As part of the preparation of the Billingshurst Parish Neighbourhood Plan, it is important for us to consider the merits of making site allocations for development in order to address local needs. We are therefore placing a call out to landowners in the Parish of Billingshurst who may have an interest in promoting their land for development. The Neighbourhood Plan is looking to address our needs over the next 15 years. If you are a landowner – or represent a landowner - and wish for your land to be considered for allocation in the Neighbourhood Plan, you are required to provide us with the following details: a) A clear statement of which types of development you wish your land to be considered for, e.g. residential, leisure, employment, etc. b) The area of the land in hectares. Please note that sites must be at least 0.1 hectares in size to be considered. c) A plan which clearly shows the extent of the land that you wish to be considered. Ideally this should be on an Ordnance Survey

New firefighters but still more needed

Work of Olivia and Abie sells thousands Two talented young women have received awards for their artwork. Olivia Beddall and Abie Kandeh put their skills to work on cards that old by the thousands for the Samaritans. Roger Dugdale, Leslie Taylor, and John Connolly from the Samaritans welcomed Collyer’s college students Olivia and Abie to their Denne Road drop-in centre in Horsham to present the prizes. They also gave their visitors a tour of the facilities. The two girls are the joint winners of the prestigious Samaritans Christmas Card Competition 2016. Susie McAlister, Subject Leader for Art and Design at Collyer’s, said: “I loved

New recruits New firefighter Clinton Keulder, from Henfield is the latest recruit to the fire and rescue service in West Sussex. He was joined by retained colleagues for a “passout” parade at Worthing. Retained firefighters are men and women who combine their day jobs or duties with being on call for the fire service, ready to respond to emergencies when they are needed. They are vital to the delivery of the county’s fire and rescue service and receive regular training to equip them with the skills they need to deal with fires, road traffic collisions and a wide range of other emergencies. They also play an important role in community engagement activities.

Other latest recruits are Ryan Carter and Jason Holloway from Littlehampton, Katie Gray from East Preston, Luke Kendall from Hurstpierpoint and Craig Parlanti from Turners Hill. Several of the new recruits already have connections with the service. Ryan’s father and Jason’s stepfather both work for the service, while Katie already has a part-time role with the training team at Worthing Fire Station and a brother-in-law in the service. Retained firefighters receive an annual retaining fee as well as additional payments for any incidents or community safety events they attend. The new firefighters were presented with their certificates by Assistant Chief Fire Officer

Neil Stocker after an opening address from Head of Training, Development and Assurance, Jon Simpson, who said Retained firefighters make such a valuable contribution to their local communities and our Service couldn’t operate without their considerable dedication. “This is the sixth successful course we have run this year. We still have a number of vacancies at retained fire stations around the county and welcome applications from all sections of the community.”

the designs and I am incredibly proud of the whole year group. They’ve all done exceptionally well and they should feel very happy with themselves.” Susie, senior tutor Ian McAlister and college principal Sally Bromley accompanied the girls. Well over 3,000 copies of the cards were sold. Collyer’s Senior Tutor, Ian McAlister was delighted: “The students take the competition incredibly seriously. They do feel responsible for making sure the public like the cards and thus raise as much money as possible for this brilliant charity. It is a professional brief and they are genuinely passionate about raising money for the Samaritans.”

Wardens help local school tackle parking problems

Vanessa Green and Carol Boniface, Neighbourhood Wardens for Pulborough, have been instrumental in helping to tackle the on-going issue of poor parking outside St Mary’s primary school, during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up. This was in response to parents’ concerns for their children’s safety. Poor parking had also been witnessed by Carol and Vanessa whilst out on patrol at these key

times. All agree that safety of the children is paramount and is everyone’s responsibility, so in partnership with the school, they designed an A-board with a ‘no drop or stop’ message on it. Although a very simple idea, it has had a massively positive effect as noticed by parents, the school and the wardens themselves. Local parents and school children (pictured with Carol, Vanessa and the

Head Teacher Mrs Brown) are fully supportive of the idea. Carol commented: “School parking is a massive problem throughout the country, but hopefully this small step will go some way to make drivers think about their actions when they do the school run at St Mary’s. The village is in a very lucky position to have a small car park, just 200m away from the school, which is run by the parish council for the sports and social club.” Vanessa added: “We are trying to encourage drivers to use this car park, but few people do, which is a shame as it’s a facility that many schools would love to have. “We will continue to work with the school and its Travel Plan to see what we can encourage them to do in the longer term, but for now, this is making a difference.” The Neighbourhood Warden Scheme helps to provide a reassuring presence in the community. Wardens can deal with issues such as anti-social behaviour and dog fouling. They offer advice on crime prevention, liaise with vulnerable residents and refer crime incidents to the Police, acting as professional witnesses. They are not, however, a replacement for the Police, nor are they an emergency service. If you would like to get in touch with the Pulborough Wardens, you can call Carol on 07584 337476 or Vanessa on 07584 337475 or via twitter @HorshamWardens

Charity hoping dog message remembered as winter bites

Star Bridie The RSPCA is hoping that a hit video featuring a dog from Southwater will send a lasting message throughout 2017. The Southwater-based animal welfare charity, achieved a huge online hit after being viewed about 200,000 times on social media soon after its launch just before Christmas. It also attracted well over 10,000 comments and reactions. Now with the festive season behind us the charity is hoping the message stays with people as it faces taking in nearly 20,000 animals before the end of winter. The RSPCA’s festive video, Give A Little Love, which shows a dog finding her forever home and passing on the love to other rescue animals, features real life RSPCA success story dog, Bridie, from Southwater, nearHorsham. Amie Hill, video producer at the RSPCA said: “We are absolutely amazed at how popular our video has been, and are just so happy that the public has taken Bridie’s story into their hearts. We wanted to make a heartwarming Christmas video for our supporters to enjoy, and to have beautiful Bridie star in the film is fantastic, particularly given her own story. “We are very proud that everyone involved with the film works for the RSPCA at the Horsham head office, from the production team of three, to the staff appearing in the film – even the singer who wrote and performs the song. And, of course, all the animals featured are genuine RSPCA rescues.” The short film was made by the charity’s broadcast team of just three and was filmed at two Sussex RSPCA centres in November. The video features several staff members from the charity’s headquarters in Southwater, along with a number of rescued animals from RSPCA Millbrook Animal Centre, Surrey. The starring role is filled by real life RSPCA rescue dog, Irish Setter Bridie, making her film debut. She attends local training classes at Billingshurst Dog Training Club but otherwise has had no special preparation for her role, illustrating the potential that so many dogs awaiting adoption in RSPCA centres can offer their new owners. Bridie was discovered in 2014 with thirteen other fully-grown

Irish Setter dogs, crammed into squalid puppy cages (pictured below) kept between the filthy kitchen, bathroom and the garden shed at the home of a dog breeder. They were some of the worst conditions the inspector had ever seen. The front of the shed was barricaded shut with wooden pallets and posts, and the dogs had no food, water or bedding. Bridie was covered in faeces, had various untreated injuries and her coat was matted and filthy, a far cry from her new life in Southwater with owner Dr Julia Wrathall, who rehomed Bridie. Julia, who is Chief Scientific Officer at the RSPCA and also fea-

tures in the video as Bridie’s owner, said: “Bridie is a fabulous example of how, when shown a little love, animals can be completely transformed, leaving behind the past and giving so much back to us. When she was first rescued, Bridie was terrified of the outside world and very nervous and skittish. But she has blossomed into a fantastic, friendly, affectionate, and happy dog. She is a testament both to the inspectors, vets and animal centre staff who rescued and cared for her, and to her own resilience and willingness to give life - and humans - a second chance. “Her wonderfully positive nature has shone through, despite the horrors of her former life. I am delighted that Bridie has featured in this video. She is so inspiring and I feel really privileged to have her in my life.” The original song featured on the video, called ‘Give A Little Love’, comes from UK songwriters Alistair Gavan and Lucy Ellie Cooper - who allowed the charity to use it free of charge. It was both written and performed by Alistair, a musician and record producer from Brighton and country singer Lucy from Haywards Heath, who also works for the charity. The short film forms part of the RSPCA Love Animals, Hate Cruelty Campaign. The charity expects to take in somewhere in the region of 19,000 animals this winter To watch the video please visit: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=fPQCBzreSm8

After originally being shortlisted, a team of hospice colleagues, led by Medical Director Dr Patricia Brayden attended an interview in London to illustrate the different ways St Catherine’s demonstrates compassion. This included sharing the ways people who have experienced the hospice’s care are central in decision making. St Catherine’s says it knows that learning from people who have experienced its services is one of the best ways it can improve. It also explained how the

hospice trains local healthcare providers and internal staff about compassion awareness, as well as other internal initiatives such as a twice yearly staff Wellbeing Week, and staff Schwartz Rounds, which bring clinical and non-clinical staff together to share the emotional and social impacts of working at St Catherine’s in a confidential environment. Penny Jones, Director of Care Services at St Catherine’s, said: “It was a fantastic honour to be shortlisted to the top two finalists for a national Compassion Award. “At St Catherine’s providing people with compassionate care is central to all the work we do, but we are also aware that to provide the highest level of compassion to others, we need to look after our staff and make sure they are being compassionate towards themselves and each other. At what is an incredibly exciting time for us at St Catherine’s, with planning permission for a new hospice recently granted, and the launch of our new brand, coming runner-up for this accolade is another great endorsement for us.” Mid Sussex Council recently granted the hospice planning approval for a new centre at Pease Pottage, on land that will also have a housing estate.

Drivers in court after ignoring police blitz Will Snowdog brings falls? Drivers caught

More than 100 drivers have been prosecuted after being caught for drink or drug-driving offences. They drove while over the limit despite advance warnings from police about the blitz before Christmas. Two builders, a nurse and a tree surgeon are among the first people to be convicted for drink or drug-driving in Sussex in December. Officers carrying out dedicated patrols and responding to reports of incidents have so far made 187 arrests up to this week in the county as part of the Christmas campaign run by Surrey and Sussex Police. Of these, 24 have already been convicted and a further 77 have

been charged to appear before magistrates. The operation, which aims

hug from pupils Pupils at the Towers School in Upper Beeding might be wondering if their new “pet” is a harbinger of snow this winter. Headmistress Clare Trelfa said: “Towers parents Mr and Mrs Gillespie have delighted pupils by lending us their newly-acquired snowdog, which they bought at the charity auction at Martlets

Hospice. “The snowdog, which has already brightened up the day for pupils and staff, was painted by Louise Dear. She is a mixture of beautifully vibrant colours and has been greeted with utter disbelief and deep suspicion by our school dog, Skye. Thank you, Mr and Mrs Gillespie.”

January 13 deadline for grant bids Deadline is approaching for people hoping to get a grant for their project. Mens’s Shed at Horsham received £10,000 in the first round just before Christmas. Applications for the second round of Members Big Society Fund grants from West Sussex County Council need to be submitted by noon on January 13. People interested in finding out more should visit www. westsussex.gov.uk and search for Members Big Society Fund. Men’s sheds projects, a community centre and a club for young people are just some of the projects to benefit from £97,000 of funding in 2016/2017. The Members Big Society Fund, from West Sussex County Council, is investing £200,000 in community led projects in 2016/17. This amount is being awarded across two rounds, with up to £100,000 allocated each time. West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance, Jeremy Hunt, said: “We are proud to be focusing on projects which promote wellbeing and we have been encouraging residents to connect, be active, take notice, keep learning and give back to their communities. We hope that by doing this together, we can strengthen communities, tackle loneliness, support young people and promote independence in later life. “We continue to be inspired

the majority of people who drive on our county’s roads are responsible, there is still a minority who either don’t think or simply don’t care about the consequences of their actions. Driving under the influence of drink or drugs is a serious offence and it won’t be tolerated. “Last year, more than 70 people were either killed or seriously injured on the roads in Sussex due to drink-driving, and these collisions could so easily have been avoided. “But drink and drug-driving doesn’t just cost lives; it will also cost you your licence, with a minimum 12-month disqualification for anyone convicted. In addition, it could cost you your job, your home, or your family and friends. “It really is not worth the risk, and we would urge all motorists to think before they get behind the wheel of their car. Drink or drive; never both.”

by those whose enthusiasm and dedication make these ventures successful and actually possible in the first place. It is a real privilege to be able to support such a variety of groups within our county. “I would like to assure all the applicants, whether their bid was successful or not, that the County Council really values the fantastic work that all these organisations do in supporting their communities.” Sussex Clubs for Young People is one scheme to benefit. Committed to developing a vibrant voluntary youth sector, the project supports a range of Youth Clubs in West Sussex. One of the projects the award will enable them to develop is their work in giving advice and guidance to clubs not already involved in their youth programme. In order to be considered for Big Society funding the proposal must have had the support of the local County Council Member; have been of significant benefit to a local community, or West Sussex as a whole; been both sustainable and of lasting benefit; and consistent with the County Council’s aims and objectives. Applications for the second round of funding need to be submitted by noon on January 13. People interested in finding out more should visit www. westsussex.gov.uk and search for Members Big Society Fund.

Louise helps students reach for stars Reaching for the stars

A former student who became a spacecraft operations engineer showed Collyer’s Physics students her fascinating world. Louise Foote, an ex-Collyer’s student and now a Spacecraft Operations Engineer, showed the students satellites in the process of being built and talked about some of the challenges faced when putting high tech into space. The group, accompanied by teachers Joe Brock and Nikki Bache, paid a visit to Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd, where Louise works. The party of 13 was treated to a trip round the facility to see Physics and Aerospace technology in action, and watched the launch of the latest four Galileo FOC satellites live from French Guiana. Joe Brock, the school’s Subject Leader for Physics, said: “It is so good having our ex-students supporting the current cohort by introducing them to such an interesting application of the topics learnt in class. “We are so lucky to

have Louise, who continues to be a great supporter of our Physics and Electronics departments by offering us this annual opportunity.” Students were also given a mechanical perspective on the engineering from Phil Allen, a Graduate Mechanisms Engineer, enabling a unique insight into the technical problems and engineering challenges involved in this exciting area. Joe Brock added: “I’d like to say a massive thank you to Louise, Phil and Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd for being such great supporters. The students had a fantastic experience.” Vice Principal Melanie Russell said: “I’m delighted that our students were given this chance and it is so touching when our former students remember us so fondly and are keen to help the next generation. We have a talented group of students coming through and for many they can certainly reach for the stars.”

Chestnut Tree House golf day a great success

Business Martin Read - Reporter Just before Christmas, Sussex Golf and Rookwood Golf Course welcomed around 60 passionate golfers to the special charity event in aid of children at the Chestnut Tree House Hospice. Energised by bacon rolls and hot beverages the golfers teed off at the break of dawn in near perfect winter playing conditions, competing for team and individual prizes in a range of golf challenges. The day raised over £700 for toys for the children – all safely delivered in good time for Christmas, along with a much appreciated cheque, Jayne Todd of Chestnut House telling Sussex Golf organisers Alex Bethell and Carl

With kids of our own Alex and I were determined to ensure that we handed over the presents and money before the big day and it is great that we were able to do that. A big thank you to the golfers, and Rookwood Golf Course – and to Bedford Sports for the trophies and our sponsors – The Limeburners, The Sussex Bathroom Company, the Dead Parrott, Courtney Green, BritWeb, Refine Metals, Burbank Construction, Candbox and Cottesmore and Ifield Golf Clubs. Kind gesture shows goodwill A kind gesture by the Customer Service team at Swan Walk Shopping Centre in Horsham is helping the Salvation Army. They decided that they could make a little difference to others less fortunate than themselves. Instead of taking part in their usual Secret Santa at Christmas by buying one another gifts, they pooled their money and bought some warm clothes for those who are homeless. Their donation is now with The Salvation Army who will it distribute locally. New team member Adam Glew said: “The idea just came to me and my colleagues have been great and fully supported this initiative.”

Yorkshire celebrates opening in Horsham with charity donation

Yorkshire Building Society celebrated the opening of its newest agency in Horsham, by showing its support for children’s charity Action Medical Research. The £100 donation from the society’s charitable foundation was presented to representatives of the Horsham-based charity at a special opening event last month. Guests were treated to an array of Yorkshire themed treats, including white roses and hampers stuffed with treats from Gods’ Own Country, to mark the opening of what is the Yorkshire’s 100th agency. Darren Giles, proprietor of the Horsham agency, said: “I’d like to thank everyone who came along on Friday and made our opening celebration so memorable. “What better way to mark the Yorkshire’s arrival in Horsham than to show our support for Action Medical Research, which is a fantastic local charity.” Action Medical Research has been funding medical breakthroughs since it was set up in 1952, including the first polio

Hundreds of apprenticeships on offer for Horsham residents Job seekers from Horsham will be able to see opportunities for apprenticeships next week. The Apprenticeship Jobs Fair is being held next Thursday will be an opportunity for job seekers, businesses and residents to find out about apprenticeships and the opportunities they provide. At the moment there are about 400 apprentice vacancies in West Sussex. The fair will staged from 3pm to 5pm at the Civic Hall, part of the Town Hall, in The Boulevard, Crawley. A teenager has spoken of how her apprenticeship exceeded all of her expectations. Libby White, who finished school with one GCSE, has described her own training journey after being advised against fulltime education. Libby, 19, is coming to the end of a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Business Administration. She said: “It has actually worked out really well and I do think it suits me more than education. It’s just really different and it is not just sitting in a classroom. “I’m really enjoying it. It’s good to get paid, learn, get training on the job and have hands on experience at the same time. “I thought it was going to be a lot of paper work but it’s been really good and I have done a lot of different stuff. I’m first aid trained so I can go on school trips and I also help on reception. “I do want to be an English teacher eventually so the experience of being in the school will

help me as well. They have been really good here actually as they know about my long term career plans so they have had me in English lessons taking notes.” With around 400 current vacancies for apprentices in West Sussex it is hoped that Libby’s story will inspire others to find out more at the upcoming Apprenticeship Jobs Fair. An apprenticeship combines practical training in a job with study. It means apprentices will gain job-specific skills and obtain related qualifications, while also earning a wage. The fair , which is backed by Crawley Borough Council and West Sussex County Council, will include information on the range of subjects on offer which range from social care to hair and beauty, IT to catering and everything in between. Stephen Hillier, County Council Cabinet Member for Children, Start of Life, said: “There were more than 2,900 successful apprenticeships in West Sussex in 2014/15 and I hope this number will continue to grow. The young people in our county have an incredibly diverse range of talents and I hope that many look to apprenticeships as the start of a bright and exciting future.” For more information about the fair, email apprentice.network@ westsussex.gov.uk. Lee Hurst, one of Britain’s mostloved comedians, is back with an all-new show. Having earned his stripes over twenty years ago as a circuit comic and one of the best telly warm-up men in the business, Lee was quickly promoted to being a regular face on comedy panel shows, including They Think It’s All Over and Have I Got News For You, which is how he became a household name. Currently, Lee enjoys performing live to audiences all over the country, and has a reputation for being a master of his craft, who can artfully control any crowd. His combined quick wit, sharp observation and easy manner make an

evening in Lee’s company a fun night out and is the reason why Lee’s fans are a dedicated bunch. This tour will be Lee’s ninth full-length comedy show. Simply called ‘Comedy Show No. 9’, it is jam-packed with laughs, delivered in Lee’s style of comedy - funny stories, quality gags and side-splitting observations. There are no gimmicks. There is no over-arching narrative journey or message. This is one man, a mic and his mind. The show is simple. The content is hilarious. Performance: 20 January, 7.30pm. Tickets: Available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 or by visiting: www.parkwoodtheatres.co.uk/The-Hawth

Ballet and Shakespeare with Astonishing Grace Ballet Theatre UK’s Romeo And Juliet will be performing on stage on the evening of Wednesday 18 January. As the nation recently celebrated 400 years of William Shakespeare’s legacy, the company has created a new production to tell the tragic tale of star-crossed lovers with astonishing grace and heartbreaking intimacy. During the opulent Capulet’s ball, our lovers meet, sparking a fateful series of events. We follow the young couple as they experience the greatest of romances to their tragic final

embrace. Stunning costumes and innovative stage sets transport us to Renaissance Verona where the tragic tale unfolds of the Capulet and Montague families. From the balcony scene’s elated pas de deux, to the lovers’ heart-breaking ends, Romeo and Juliet promises to be an audience favourite and the highlight of this year’s calendar. BE BOP A LULA 14 January 7.30pm

BALLET THEATRE UK PRESENTS ROMEO AND JULIET 18 January 7.30pm West End star, Ramin Karimloo, and The Broadgrass Band will be performing on stage on Friday 27 January at 7.30pm. In the world of theatrical performers, Ramin Karimloo is known as one of the most formidable talents in the industry. Heralded for his portrayal of leading roles Jean Valjean in Les Miserables and the Phantom in Phantom of the Opera, Karimloo is a musical force unlike any other. In fact, it was his unbridled reputation that led to his

performance in the recent Oscar tribute to Les Misérables. When asked about his upcoming show, Ramin said: “I am looking forward to taking our Broadgrass show on the road for an extended run, especially here in the UK. It’s been a few years since I’ve been able to go around the country. These will be the only UK dates before I head off back to Broadway to open the premier of Anastasia. “We are all excited to visit the different cities around the UK.

Each show will be unique. It will be a show like you’ve never seen or heard. A hootenanny. It’s a great night for everyone. We’re all in this together.” Ramin’s hits include: ‘Bring Him Home’, ‘Empty Chairs at Empty Tables’, ‘Oh What a Beautiful Morning’ and ‘Music of the Night’. Tickets for the show are available online: www.thecapitolhorsham.com or via the Box Office: 01403 750220

I LOVE TO BOOGIE with T.REXTASY 20 January 7.30pm

A Great Show for all glam rock fans I Love To Boogie With T.Rextasy will be performing in Horsham’s Capitol on Friday 20 January. Tribute band, T.Rextasy, is accepted as the world’s only official live band dedicated to the legendary Marc Bolan and his band, T.Rex, and the only band endorsed and approved by Bolan’s family, estate, original ex-members of T.Rex, and Bolan’s catalogue

management. The band has been described by many as ‘beyond the boundaries of tribute’. This full-on concert showcases all of the hits and more, with both electric and acoustic performances, faithfully recreating the energy and performance of Marc Bolan and T.Rex. Bringing audiences to their feet across the globe, the whole family

will enjoy the experience of being transported back to the ‘70s, to re-live the experience of attending a Marc Bolan concert live. “They’re the closest you’re ever going to get to the real thing” – Bill Legend (original T.Rex Drummer) Tickets are available online: www.thecapitolhorsham.com or via the Box Office: 01403 750220

Cottesmore Ladies enjoy the festive competitions Golf The Ladies’ Section of Cottesmore Golf and Country Club held their festive competitions including the annual Turkey Trot which saw 45 ladies taking part in either the 18 or 9-hole 3-team Texas Scramble competitions. There were prizes for everyone at the end of the day but the victorious teams were Pat Johns, Prue Harding and Naomi Zoob, winning the 18-hole competition, and Anne Anderson, Peggy Davies and Sue Ford victorious in the 9-hole

event. Ruth Leatherbarrow, Ladies’ Captain, praised her ViceCaptain, Margaret Swatman, who sourced over 50 gifts for the players and non-playing guests, who all came together after the competition for a turkey dinner and a cello performance by Naomi Zoob. In the Christmas Medley competition again there were teams of three but this time playing a competition where the two best scores counted on Par 4 and 5 holes and all three scores

Winter Foursomes winners Christine Knight and Linda Atkins

counted on the Par 3s. The winning team were Linda Atkins, Jill Lewis and Svetlana Malkova who scored an impressive 91 points. Linda Atkins was in winning form earlier in the month, when with her partner, Christine Knight, she won the Winter Foursomes final against Heather Skinner and Jill Lewis on the 17th hole. This win means that Atkins and Knight will go forward to represent Cottesmore in the national Daily Mail Foursomes competition in 2017.

Gaskin sets a record with a double hat-trick

Photo by John Lines Ryman League Division One South Horsham 8 – 1 Godalming Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor Horsham quickly shook off any festive cobwebs with a comprehensive victory over rock bottom Godalming at Gorings Mead. In a match made more memorable by George Gaskin’s record making two hat-tricks in a day feat the Hornets completely ripped apart their already certain to be relegated opponents with a dominant second half goal fest. Gaskin - who had signed a few days before on jointregistration terms from Littlehampton Town - entered the match with 15 minutes remaining and grabbed a superb hat-trick. The striker had previously scored three times in the morning for Littlehampton Town in their 4-1 success at Worthing United before rushing up the A24 to pull on a Hornets shirt and hit another three for his new club; a feat that seems to be

previously unequalled anywhere. Gaskin’s hat-trick helped create another record as the Hornets 8-1 margin of victory was their highest ever recorded at this level. Hornets started the goal rush in the 19th minute with Charlie Farmer’s header beating visiting ‘keeper Brannon Daly and then added to it with a superbly hit shot by Tom Lawley that again left Daly with no chance of making a save. 10 minutes before the break, and totally against the run of play, Godalming shocked Horsham by pulling a goal back through Matthew Males’ effort that gave the half time score a tighter look than the balance of play warranted. However the late first half goal gave more impetuous to Horsham’s second half play than it did to the team who scored it, and the match became a one way goal scoring exercise. Steve Metcalf restored the two goal buffer in the 53rd minute and substitute Darren Boswell made it 4-1 with 76 minutes played. From here on it became

George Gaskin celebrates 2 hat-tricks in a day

the George Gaskin show as with 15 minutes remaining the striker was sent on by Dom Di Paola for his Hornets debut, and with his first touch he scored the fifth for Horsham. His second touch in the 84th minute produced goal six for his side as he converted Lewis Hyde’s cross from close range. The third goal from Gaskin, and his sixth of the day, came when he fired past Daly after some lovely football to make statisticians everywhere reach for the record books. Not to be totally outdone by Gaskin the last and best goal of the match went to George Branford who in stoppage time superbly controlled a Boswell pass before unleashing an unstoppable volley past the helpless Daly. With the team now on a high and into the top half of the table 2017 is looking a whole lot better on the field for Horsham. If the off field progress with a new ground is as successful then it will be momentous year for Horsham FC.

Heath’s first ever Wednesday evening home match drew in their biggest gate of the season (118) against local rivals Loxwood and those watching witnessed an excellent evening’s entertainment with both teams giving their all on a cold misty evening at the Leisure Centre. An evenly contested first half of end to end football saw the Magpies take the lead in stoppage time when the Heath defence failed to clear their lines and the ball came out to Byron Napper who split the Heath defence with a perfect through ball into the path of Charlie Pitcher and the Loxwood striker made sure with a right foot shot low under the advancing Michael Chester. Heath did not take long to equalise when within 2 minutes of the restart Ollie Moore was brought down in the penalty area by Loxwood keeper Harrison Hilfiker and Jake Holmes stepped up to convert the resulting penalty. The goal inspired the Heath players who appeared to step up a gear and Jay Lovett did well to clear a Shaun Findlay effort and minutes

YM took a good away point on a frosty pitch

SCFL Premier Division Crawley Down Gatwick 2 – 2 Horsham YMCA Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor

Horsham YMCA fought out a hard earned point over the Christmas period away at The Haven Centre, the home of Crawley Down Gatwick. A crowd of 105, CDG’s largest of the season, braved the sub-zero temperatures

later Hilfiker made an excellent save from Jamal Sultan’s volley. Loxwood replied with substitute Harry Bachelor whipping in a right wing cross which Pitcher just failed to connect with and Bachelor was close again with another left foot shot that curled just wide of the upright. Heath’s second goal was scored midway through the half; Joe Holvey advanced down the right flank and crossed to Holmes who met it on the volley from 12 yards giving Hilfiker no chance. Minutes later it was 3-1 when a long free kick from Findlay wide on the left was met at the far post by Marlon Maxwell who rose above everyone to power a header past the Loxwood ‘keeper. Holmes was then denied his hat-trick when after putting the ball in the net the linesman having raised his flag for offside, although the ball clearly came off a Loxwood defender. The match was well and truly over for the Magpies when Dean Wright, who had only been on the field for a minute, sprinted away down the right flank, cut inside the penalty area and hammered a right foot shot low under Hilfiker to seal a comprehensive second half performance from Heath who thoroughly deserved the win against a strong Loxwood side.

Heath overran Loxwood in the second half

Injury hit YM take a point from an even contest On a hard frost bound pitch the hosts took an early lead through Oli Leslie’s goal after 6 minutes. The match then became an end to end affair with mistakes from each side, mainly due to the playing surface. The balance of play however was very even with both teams having a fair share of the ball and both creating some decent chances to add to the score-line. YM came out the more determined in the second period and were rewarded with an equaliser 5 minutes after the restart when Max Howell scored. Dan Evans scored a second for YM in the 76th minute to put his side ahead and in with a good chance to take all three points. But the hosts had other ideas and deservedly equalised through Sam Cane in the 81st minute to give the evenly matched sides a point a piece. After the match YM manager Peter Buckland praised the referee for allowing the match to go ahead and conceded that a draw was a fair result.

Cold weather reduces the number of golfers Golf Duncan McSorland - Horsham Golf & Fitness The players were met with very frosty conditions when returning after Christmas which resulted in a depleted field for the Traffic Light competition in which players play 6 holes each from three different coloured tees. Richard Levey (21) came first with a score of 39 points; Chris Stapley (13) & Martin Leake (20) both scored 37 points with Stapley taking the runner up spot on countback. Levey was obviously on form as he also recorded a two with Ian Davenport and won the ‘nearest the

pin’ on the par 3 18th. Wednesday’s competition also saw a substantially reduced turn out for the American Foursomes. This is similar in format to regular foursomes with the exception that, instead of the first shot, the ball chosen to be played is taken after both players have played their second shots. First place went to the pairing of Charlie Malsbury (10) & Peter Cowpertwait (24) with an impressive 43 points. They were closely followed by the second pairing of Laurie Crabb (15) & Bob Jones (28) who scored an equally impressive 42 points.

Injury to YM keeper leads to Heath winner in contentious finale

injury to keeper Sam Smith. YM beat Broadbridge Heath 2-0 in September, but coming into this game BBH were sixth in the league, three places above YM. BBH had a corner in the opening seconds, but YM were soon in the game. In the hard fought first half both sides attacked but neither keeper was seriously troubled, YM winning the corner count 7-3. The first five minutes after the resumption belonged to Heath, pacey Jamal Sultan testing Smith in the YM goal before another foray was somehow aborted. Then a YM corner was scrambled away until a Max Howell cross enabled Phil Johnson to give the hosts the lead in the 62nd minute. But Heath promptly equalised when the ball fell nicely for Jake Holmes. Then, YM blazed over, a Sam Schaaf curler went past the far post and a rebound from a blocked free kick went wide. Both sides had more corners but honours were even until Sam Smith was smashed to the ground - the incident eluding match officials – and Ollie Moore

pushed the ball home. A goal was awarded but play never resumed and the final whistle was blown with Smith prostrate awaiting an ambulance. Heath Manager Steve Painter said a clear foul had been committed, while YM Manager Peter Buckland told the District Post: “1-1 would have been about right, so that was a very unsatisfactory ending. Sam Smith was launched into and the referee now realises that a wrong decision was made. There were two and a half minutes to go, but the ground was freezing up and Sam couldn’t be moved, so we couldn’t continue. Abandonment might have been fairer but Sam was our main concern.” At the time of going to press the match result is yet to be officially ratified by the SCFL, however it is expected that the result will stand. With yet another injury to contend with YM visit lowly Worthing United tomorrow (Saturday) when Heath will entertain eighth placed Newhaven at the Leisure Centre.

Double over Lewes caps fine festive season for Horsham Scott Kirkwood fires in a shot against Lewes

Lewis Hyde heads home in Horsham’s win at Lewes

Photos by John Lines Ryman League Division One South Lewes 1 – 2 Horsham Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor Horsham secured the double over bitter rivals Lewes with first half goals from Lewis Hyde and George Branford being enough to take all 3 points despite the home side pulling a goal back 12

minutes from time. The match was played out amid a niggly undercurrent that saw referee Alex Blake reaching for his yellow card a total of 11 times. The excellent travelling ‘Lardy Army’ were loud and colourful throughout and at times certainly became Hornets 12th man. With George Gaskin starting following his two sensational appearances as substitute, and the Hornets in a rich vein of form, the

travelling band were hopeful of a good result and with 23 minutes played their team came up with the opening goal. Scott Kirkwood’s corner was met by Hyde who leapt above the home defence to power a header past Fernandez in the Lewes goal. Then with 8 minutes to go before half time Branford, who has a habit of scoring spectacular goals, again hit one of his ‘specials’ this time all of 30 yards out that left Fernandez well beaten as the ball hit the top corner of his net. The stunned Lewes team desperately tried to force their way back into the match but despite a few scrambles the Horsham defence held firm to take the 2 goal advantage into the second half. Lewes had little choice but to throw everything into attack in the secondperiod and from the restart went about doing so while Horsham were happy to sit back and let them come at them while relying on their pacey players on the counter attack. As the half progressed the Lewes pressure upon the Hornets goal increased and eventually with 12 minutes remaining they pulled a goal back when with his back to goal Jonte Smith executed an overhead kick that beat Josh Pelling to produce a nervy last few minutes. Horsham could have sat back even deeper but the goal spurred them into action again and it was the Hornets who had the better of the final exchanges as they went looking for a third killer goal. At the final whistle the two in the first half was enough to see Dom Di Paola’s side extend their unbeaten run to four and cement their comfortable 12th placed spot in the table. On Saturday Horsham host Guernsey who are in 21st place in the table, fourth from bottom, with 24 points, having taken only 2 points from their 13 away games so far this season.

Photos by John Lines Ryman League Division One South Molesey 3 – 3 Horsham Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor A very entertaining encounter on New Year’s Eve between Horsham and Molesey ended with a point each however the continued good form from the Hornets should have produced another win to complement their recent good results. Horsham came straight out of the blocks and from the start had the better of the play but a mistake in midfield allowed Molesey to take the lead. Joe Nwoko stole the ball and steamed towards ‘keeper Josh Pelling. As the Horsham stopper came to meet him the Molesey man chipped the ball over his head and into the net for a 1-0 advantage. True to form Horsham were quick to equalise and it was a super strike from Tom Lawley that brought them level with his long range effort dipping under the cross bar and out of the reach of home ‘keeper Liam Allen. Horsham then took the lead in the 31st Minute with a well taken goal from Darren Boswell. The goal set up the rest of the half as a close fought contest with both sides putting together some attractive football from which the Hornets took their one goal lead into the break. Within 3 minutes of the restart the home side were level when defender Sam Charles slammed in a long range shot that went into the top corner

leaving Pelling no chance. The Molesey equaliser seemed to dent the recent composure shown by Horsham and the buoyant home side pressed forward resulting in an unforced error at the back from Horsham that allowed Craig Lewington to score from close range to give his side the lead. Then fresh from his exploits against Godalming George Gaskin was sent on by manager Di Paola to try to rescue things and within 5 minutes ‘super sub Gaskin’ had restored parity; finishing his well-timed run with a clever chip over the out rushing ‘keeper Allen to again level things up. On the balance of play it was no more than Horsham deserved - they probably deserved more - and then with the match finely balanced they will feel aggrieved that they were denied what seemed a blatant penalty, and again Gaskin was involved. The Horsham substitute took the ball around Allen only for the Molesey ‘keeper to bring him down with his outstretched arm. Despite vociferous appeals from the players and the bench, referee Alex Grey waved away all protests and the home team escaped. Still Horsham had chances to score with the lively and dangerous Gaskin going close before creating a chance for George Branford but all came to nothing and in the end a point at Moseley was not a bad result, Horsham however will feel it was 2 points dropped.
