Beloved actor Peter dies at 92 phil dennett News Editor
Game of Thrones actor Peter Vaughan, who lived at Mannings Heath, has died at 93. He leaves a widow, actress Lilias Walker. Mr Vaughan, who was married to actress Lilias Walker, played the character Maester Aemon in Game of Thrones from 2011 to last year. He once joked about the allaction series: “You never know who is going to have their head chopped off next.” Millions of television viewers remembered him for a brief but outstanding role in the prison comedy series Porridge, with Ronnie Barker. He actually only played in three episodes as rogue Harry “Grouty” Snout. But his performance as Snout was so indelible that he said in much older age that people still quipped at him: “Let you out, have they Grouty.” He was a respected character actor who played many support roles with distinction. Born Peter Ohm in April 1923 in Shropshire, he once said that when starring with Frank Sinatra in the 1967 film Naked Runner it was important not to let Sinatra push you around. He also had appearances in television’s Citizen Smith in the 1970s and was highly regarded by fans. He was a lifelong Fulham football supporter, sometimes watching matches with his friend Michael Caine.
Mr Vaughan died peacefully on Tuesday morning, with his family beside him. He had recalled his career in a book called “Once a Villain”, which he had looked forward earlier this year to being published. The District Post’s sports editor Dave Smith, who lives at Mannings Heath and often spoke to Mr Vaughan, said: “ He was a lovely man and will be missed in the village on his daily walks in his shorts and ‘hi-vis’ top with his dog.” Mannings Heath resident John White told the Post on Tuesday: “To all of us who knew him from Mannings Heath he was just a
He was a lovely man and will be missed in the village on his daily walks in his shorts and ‘hi-vis’ top.... member of our community, a villager and no-one treated him any different and he appreciated that a great deal. I, like many others in Mannings Heath, are going to miss seeing him walking out in his hi-viz jacket, shorts and ‘wellies’, a true ‘old school’ gentleman and so unassuming. My thoughts and sincerest condolences go out to Lillias and to their family, friends and colleagues. A very sad day but Peter has left us a legacy that we and future generations can enjoy.”

Selfless runners special Christmas gift Runners at a hospice fund raiser in Horsham have given people a special gift, says an MP. The Santa versus Elves run in Horsham Park is expected to help raise at least £30,000 when final receipts are totalled. And Horsham MP Jeremy Quin, who started the event, said of the selfless efforts of more than 150 runners: “It was heart-warming to see so many people come out to support St Catherine’s Hospice. Their efforts are giving others a very special gift this Christmas, the gift of care. The many people who attended have had a fantastic time and it was the perfect way to kick-start Horsham’s Christmas season.” Gatwick Airport sponsored the event as runners of all ages tackled the four kilometre route, with
Team Santa winning. Once runners crossed the finish line, they were rewarded with a medal and mince pie before taking “selfies” with Santa at the “selfie” station. Michaela Clements, Events Fundraiser at St Catherine’s said: “It was great to see so many people take part in our first ever Santas vs. Elves fun run. Their donations will go a long way towards providing care during the festive season. Our four Santas Vs Elves Runs are on target to raise an estimated £30,000 which is amazing. I’d like to say a huge thank you to all our Horsham runners and to Gatwick Airport for their generosity in sponsoring the event.” Scenes from the run are pictured.

Drivers crash flouting drink-drugs crackdown
Flouting campaign
Drivers flouting a drink-drugs campaign are crashing because of their poor state. The situation is alarming police who arrested 35 motorists in Sussex in the only the first five days of their Christmas crackdown on drink and drug-drivers. For about half them it will mean an appearance in court. The worrying statistic comes just days after Surrey and Sussex Police issued a plea to all road users not to drive under the influence of drink or drugs this festive season – or at any other time of the year. It also follows the announcement that the number of officers capable of testing for drink and drug-driving in Sussex is now higher than ever. Inspector Stewart Goodwin, of the Roads Policing Unit, said: “It’s extremely disappointing that so many people continue to ignore our advice, which is issued for their own safety. One of the most concerning aspects of the campaign so far is the number of the arrests which have been as a result of crashes. Clearly, some of these drivers were in no fit state to be on the roads whatsoever. “However, it also goes to show that we have a zero tolerance approach to drink and drug-driving, and that we are committed to catching criminals. The figures demonstrate that we are out there to identify motorists who continue to put their lives – and others’ – at risk.” Of those arrested, 18 have been charged to appear before magistrates. Surrey and Sussex Police will continue to work with partner agencies including Sussex Safer Roads

Partnership and Drive Smart Surrey throughout the campaign, which runs until 1 January 2017. Members of the public are also being asked to play their part by reporting anyone they suspect to be driving under the influence. People in Sussex can text officers on 65999 with the details of people they suspect of drink or drug driving or visit the Operation Crackdown website. You can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. If you know someone is driving while over the limit through drink or drugs, call 999. Sussex Police says it has made a “significant investment” in its continuing campaign to tackle drink and drug-driving this Christmas. Despite repeated advance warnings about police crackdowns hundreds of drivers flout the law each year, with many ending up in court facing fines and bans. Sussex Police says about 300 officers across the force are now fully qualified to test motorists for drugs at the roadside. This is in addition to the hundreds more officers already able to test for drink-driving, and police say it makes it harder than ever for motorists to get away with offences which put their lives and others’ at risk. The figure, up from about 110, includes both Roads Policing Unit and non-unit officers, and coincides with the launch of Surrey and Sussex Police’s Christmas crackdown on drink and drugdriving, which started last week and runs until January 1.

Southwater ‘trotting Around the Christmas Tree’
Southwater Parish We were “trotting” around the Christmas Tree on Saturday 3rd December 2016 at the Southwater Christmas Festival. Santa arrived in style – as he travelled around Lintot Square in his pony and trap. We thank Julia Rigby and her rescue pony Marmite (from Maryland Ponies) for helping Santa arrive. Stars from The Capitol’s Pantomime (Aladdin) were on hand to open the event with Santa and then spent time meeting the crowd and entertaining them throughout the morning. During the rest of the day we were entertained by the Year 6 Choir from Southwater Junior Academy, Elsden School of Dance, KDF Academy of Dance, Michael Gates, Jodie Munday, Tim Newman and Horsham Youth Concert Band. We even had two dance master classes to help our compere Angie Choats improve all her dance moves! Lintot Square meanwhile was filled with traditional fair ground rides – thanks to Shayler’s Amusements - as well as many Christmas market stalls selling handmade goods, Christmas items or just raising money for local charities. All the local shops were open with many having beautiful shop front displays. Southwater Library was open and running Christmas craft and a completion all under the expert supervision of not one, but two Fairy Godmother’s and their helpers. Community Carols around the tree (accompanied by Horsham Youth Concert Band) was a wonderful way to end the event and we were grateful to have both Revd Kath Jones and Rev Godfrey Kesari on hand to guide us through the Carols. Finally, making sure that everyone was safe, the event was expertly marshalled by Staff and volunteers, including Police cadets Lewes Prior, Ellie Burrows, Katie
Nash, Joshua Middleton, Roger Moore and Lauro Daniel. What a wonderful time we had; businesses, stall holders, guests and visitors alike. Only 364 days to go until we do it all again next year! Oh we wish it could be Christmas every day…

Widow Twanky switches on Theo’s Christmas lights display A large enthusiastic crowd, gathered in Horsham’s Rushams Road to see Widow Twanky from the Capitol theatre pantomime (alias Martin Ramsdin) – turn on Theo Comber’s stunning display of Christmas lights on the outside of his family home opposite Holy Trinity church in aid of the Ambitious About Autism Charity. Martin told onlookers that the Capitol is his favourite theatre and that he would be returning there in February with the Wam Bam Club show. Local resident, BBC Radio 4’s Chris Aldridge acted as MC assisted by Father Christmas. Refreshments by Theo’s grandmother Carla and Christine were provided in the church hall with a tombola and major fund raising raffle, appropriately a prize was won by David Long whose local electrical company had kindly installed the lights free of charge. Tanbridge House student Theo told the District Post: “It is great to see so many faces here from last year. This is the fourth year of the display – it started small, but it’s quite big now!” Last year Theo and his family raised £4,000 for the charity and he aims to at least equal that, boosted by donations into the magic well in the garden next to the lights. Details of the outstanding charity’s excellent work can be found at www.ambitiousaboutautism.org.uk . Theo’s e mail address is combertheo99@ gmail.com and he would be delighted to hear from anybody wishing to contribute. Meanwhile, the spectacular display will continue until the first week of January.

Youngsters deliver Christmas message in 17 languages Youngsters at the service
Young students shared the universal message of Christmas at their Christingle Service. The pupils greeted people at St Mary’s Church, Horsham in 17 languages, all of them used by pupils in their homes. The “Prep” girls from Farling-
ton also sang heartily and played their instruments with poise, while the school reports that the young readers were expressive and crystal clear. Frances Mwale, Prep Headmistress said: “Reverend Beresford reminded us that there is far more
to Christmas than the mere trappings. “Using a large, heart-shaped Advent calendar to illustrate his point, girls opened up, ‘windows into the heart’ to see what gifts we should be sharing with others this Christmas season. These
included our emotions and responding to our community, not just thinking about what will be waiting for us under the tree. “The Christmas message, whether we are believers or not, is one of great hope and a reminder of the importance of the less
tangible parts of our lives. “Grateful thanks to the whole team for such a special evening – especially to our music teacher Mr Dallimore who never fails to put together a memorable and polished performance.”

A father and son have been found guilty of targeting vulnerable West Sussex residents. And a council running services in Horsham and other areas has warned similar offenders will be prosecuted. William Green, 48, and Terry Green, 20, were found guilty after a West Sussex Trading Standards investigation. William Green was found guilty of three charges in total and Terry Green found guilty of seven charges. The council said elderly victims were overcharged a substantial amount for poor and inept work carried out by the pair. One victim paid £7,500 for roofing work in 2015 that was worth between £250 and £300. Another victim, 95, paid £3,600 in 2015 for driveway work worth £600. The victims were commended by the magistrates for helping with the investigation and at the hearing. Trading Standards began investigations into the pair from June 2015 after consumer complaints. David Barling, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services, said: “These rogue traders have behaved despicably in exploiting elderly, innocent consumers. “This ruling sends out a strong message to any unscrupulous traders that we will find out and we will take action.” Richard Sargeant, West Sussex
Trading Standards Team Manager, said: “We work hard to protect consumers from deceitful traders. “Both William and Terry Green frightened their victims by dishonestly claiming their properties were in a dangerous state and needed urgent work. “To help ensure your peace of mind use a Trading Standards approved trader, as found in our Buy

nocturnal animal bones, did a badger blindfold trail, built homes for animals and looked at animal tracks and signs among many other activities. They also had a walk around the lake looking at autumn changes and finished the day holding magic stones and listening to the sounds of the woodland. Christmas inspiration at the Museum How Horsham’s U3A group Christmas welcome
Christmas shoppers are being offered the work of local artists and craft workers at Horsham Museum. Until December 31 Horsham Museum and Art Gallery is hosting a Pop-up Art and Craft Emporium, providing an easily accessible venue for local artists to exhibit affordable items that can be turned into Christmas gifts.
The exhibition is designed to enable artists from across Horsham District to showcase their recent work. With nine artists and craftsmen exhibiting, there is a real mixture, but the museum says that one thing they all have in common is their creativity and skill. The fine shading and delicacy of the pencil drawings of Ray-
mond Warren, who has captured the movement of the strolling elephant, is contrasted with the solid linocuts of Sue Collins, who boldly uses black lines and blocks of colour. Julia White’s etchings and prints capture both the ephemeral nature of the leaf and the beauty of the summer day with butterflies in a meadow, and translate them into an art that is representational but not real. This magic trick is perfected in the landscapes of Sarah Duffield, whilst the wood carver Robert Fielding has transformed wood into lifelike birds. Sussex and Spain might not seem to be easy bedfellows, but with Sue Gail’s eye, brush and pen, she has created comparisons between the streets of Horsham and the buildings of Spain. The fine detail in her pictures is reflected in the detailed beadwork of Kerry Taylor, who has woven intricate colour and motif in decorative fashion ware. Whilst Julia White and other artists have used the pen to create that delicate line, Dave Unsted has turned wood to become the pen itself - a pocket masterpiece of natural beauty enhanced by turning, just as his bowls become threedimensional works of grain and pattern. Museum is open 10am – 5pm Monday-Saturday. Admission Free. For more information: www.horshammuseum.org.uk

A wide range of study topics was on display, from ukulele playing to gardening, art appreciation to local history. The most popular topic amongst the group is the study of local towns and villages. There are eight groups which represents almost a quarter of the 950 membership of the Horsham Branch. Each group meets monthly to visit an interesting town or village where local people will give them the ‘lowdown ‘ on its history. The Open Day concluded with a wellsupported raffle.

Two students used a penquin theme to portray the work of people who save lives in the Horsham and Crawley area. Abie Kandeh and Olivia Bedall are the joint winners of the 2016 College of Richard Collyer’s Christmas Card Design competition for Samaritans of Horsham and Crawley. The competition, now in its third year, is open to art students at Collyers who have just a few weeks in the summer to produce designs that link to the ethos of Samaritans. Abie Kandeh produced a cardcut design of a penguin family and says: “I was thrilled to be chosen as one of the winners. The image
is hand cut from different coloured card and took a little time to make. Sometimes this is what Samaritans can give you. Just a little time to make things better. “With my card, the comfort of friends and family made me think of how the penguins huddle for warmth. I hope the work of Samaritans can be seen in this protective and supportive manner with my little festive penguin family wishing you season’s greetings!” Olivia Bedall also used a penguin theme and says, “I am glad to be able to help with such a worthwhile charity. I know Samaritans have been very helpful within our college community and
it is good to be able to give something back. With my card I wanted to get across the idea that sometimes you can get tangled up in life but that there are points of light, like Samaritans, to help you through.” The cards can be obtained from the Charity Christmas Card shop in Horsham Museum and at Collyer’s, Hurst Road, Horsham. Can you name these old players? Focus on good photography James with students
The Benetton portrait
A chance mention of Brighton and Hove Albion while researching another story led the Post to an old picture of the team that soon became “Champions of England”. News editor Phil Dennett mentioned to Clive Shelley as an “aside” that Phil’s grandfather had played for the Albion briefly about 1907. By a coincidence Mr Shelley had only just discovered the picture on this page. He said: “I was recently going through my mother’s mother’s photo album. Without explanation there was a picture of the 1906/07 Brighton and Hove
Albion side. Who knows why? “The Back of the postcard has my grandmother, Edith Bowles, being asked if she recognises anyone in the picture. There are no players names.” Perhaps Post readers can fill the gaps. Phil says he cannot recognise his grandfather in this picture, but believes there was a high turnover of players, some of them being given trials, in that era so he might well have not been there when the picture was taken, almost certainly at the start of the season. As a possible clue in 1906-7 players given their debut were Julius
Gregory, Jack Hall, Jack Lewis, Hugh MacDonald, Willie McDonald, Alec Smith, Wally Smith, Herbert Schooley, Harold Woolven, Bert Longstaff and Frank Harker. In 1907 Albion were in the Southern League, which they won in 1909-10 season. In those days this championship win qualified them to play the Football League champions in the FA Charity shield, which is still played for today. Albion were dubbed for the only time in their history Champions of England by supporters after beating mighty Aston Villa 1-0 at Stamford Bridge in September 1910 with a goal by international Charlie Webb. It was Webb who had the unusual distinction of being appointed manager of the Albion while still a prisoner in World War One. He kept the job until 1947. Albion players with Horsham connections include Charlie Baker, Alan Boorn, Dennis Burnett, Vic Channon, Jack Dugnolle, Sean Edwards, Paul Flood, Norman Gall, Glen Geard, Gavin Geddes, Horace Hughes, Bertie Lutton, Tommy Mason, Franco Massimo, Charlie Mathews, Peter Small, Terry Stanley and Eric Whittington. Some of the information in this article is taken from Albion A-Z by Tim Carder and Roger Harris, first published in 1997.

Students took inspiration from the portraiture work of the photographer James Mollison, who agreed to be the guest judge. He is renowned for his photobooks James and Other Apes, Where Children Sleep, Playground and The Disciples and his work with Unicef and Benetton. Paul Deller, the school’s Head of Art, said:“There were more than 150 entries from pupils, the standard was very high across the age groups and James was particularly impressed with the diversity and depth of thought

Each winner was presented with books ‘500 Portraits – 25 Years of the BP Portrait Award’ and ‘Where Children Sleep’ by James Mollison. Jessie Wang ‘Best in Show’ was also received a Sony camera. The work of James has been widely published throughout the world including by Colors, The New York Times Magazine, the Guardian magazine, The Paris Review, GQ, New York Magazine and Le Monde. This was his second visit to Christ’s Hospital as earlier in the year he photographed pupils for the first issue of Benetton’s ‘Clothes for Humans’ magazine. One of the portraits featuring Ella, a senior pupil, was selected to feature in the magazine which was distributed in stores worldwide. Ella was photographed wearing her Tudor uniform as an example of a modern-day version of what’s considered to be the world’s oldest school uniform. Tony Ray-Jones , who lived from 1941 to 1971 was a British born photographer who had a huge influence on the development of British documentary art photography. He was educated at Christ’s Hospital.

Pop up shop helps dementia sufferers The aim of the Dementia Action Alliance is to help create a community where people with dementia feel confident, understood and supported to live well. Dawn Fairbrother, Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Action Alliance Co-ordinator for West Sussex, said: “It’s vital that people living with dementia should still be able to enjoy all Horsham has to offer. Many people with dementia have reported feeling trapped in their own homes and let down by their communities, with one in three only getting out once a week and one in 10 only manage this once a month. This is simply unacceptable. ‘The Horsham District Dementia Action Alliance aims to address the isolation that many people living with dementia can feel and we hope this pop up show will encourage more services commit to helping people in the community live well with dementia.” To find out more about the DAA, visit www.dementiaaction.org.uk and search “Horsham District Dementia Action Alliance”.

A Detective Chief Inspector arrested the attention of students in a question and answer session. A police officer for well over 30 years, Mark Eyre spoke to the Collyer’students also spoke about his interesting and varied career. Collyer’s Lucy Hargreaves, who organised the event, said: “Mark was superb. He talked about work experience and opportunities
as a PCSO - Police Community Support Officer. He also gave advice and guidance about general employment within Sussex Police, including civilian Staff as well as police officers. “Our students thoroughly enjoyed the session and were interested in listening to what a career in the police force could offer.” Mark carefully answered detailed questions from the students
and explained the various entry requirements, what the job is like on a day-to- day basis and the likely situations an officer would encounter as a member of the Police. A pop up shop to encourage more help for dementia sufferers opened in Horsham’s town centre. Statistics say more than 2,100 people in the Horsham area are living with dementia. Horsham District Dementia Action Alliance is on a mission to enable people with dementia to feel included in their community. Alzheimer’s Society research shows that less than half of people living with dementia feel a part of the community and nearly three quarters of UK adults surveyed do not think society is geared up to deal with dementia. But the local Dementia Action Alliance says it wants to change this. To encourage more businesses, organisations and individuals to get involved they have been hosting a pop up shop in Swan Walk shopping centre opposite Wilkinsons. Members of the Horsham District Dementia Action Alliance have been there, including Horsham District Council, Age UK, West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and West Sussex County Council Libraries.

Simply clever solutions to make Sussex Christmas shopping merry The festive season is in full swing in high streets across Sussex and for many of us, thoughts are turning to gift lists and what to buy. The prospect of battling the crowds, hearing unrelenting Christmas jingles and being met with floor to ceiling displays of smiling Santa figurines can fill shoppers with dread, however. But there are ways of making the experience easier. In a similar vein to Skoda’s simply clever car extras, Horsham’s family-run Skoda dealership, Station Garage, is now offering its simply clever solutions to make your shopping trip in Sussex festively fun, rather than bah humbug. Click and collect: The gobetween of traditional and online

shopping. Order your goods from the web and, when you’re in town, collect them from the store. This has the benefit of letting you inspect the goods in person so if there’s a problem you can deal with it there and then. Gift wrapping services: If bows get you tied up in knots and tape leaves you in a sticky situation, this is the solution for you. Buy your presents, drop them off with the pros and return a bit later for gifts ready to go under the tree. Wrapping services, such as those that are normally offered at Swan Walk in Horsham and Churchill Square in Brighton, are often run by charities, with proceeds going to support their cause. Personal shopper: If you’re stuck for what to buy a loved one this festive season, a personal shopper could give you the inspiration and ideas you’re after - and help take the hassle out of finding the perfect gift. You can find personal shoppers in Brighton, Eastbourne, Crawley and Horsham and at Beales department store, which has a branch in Worthing. Shop and drop: One of the most tiring aspects of Christmas shopping is carrying bulky bags stuffed with goodies. If you’re parked centrally, you can make quick trips back to the car to drop off heavy items, or if you’re heading to the region’s larger retail meccas, you can take advantage of shop and drop services. These allow you to leave bags at a central point until you’re ready to go home. Such services are available at Westfield London, Bicester Village and the capital’s West End via the Dropit app. Some smaller stores are also happy for you to leave your purchases behind the counter until the end of the day so you don’t have to carry everything around with you. Catering services: Food - glorious, but at Christmas can be a pain to buy. If you want to avoid hassle in the supermarket aisles, think about using a catering service, such as that available at Waitrose. The supermarket chain - with branches in Burgess Hill, Lewes, Hove, Brighton and Horsham – offers a range of dishes, from traditional turkey to fish and seafood, all of which can
be delivered. Christmas crèche: Having family in tow while touring the shops can be stressful, so why not tie your trip into town with a fun activity? Festive ice rinks provide a great “Christmas crèche” for youngsters and the other half, while giving you precious time to shop without distraction. Brighton, Horsham and Worthing all host pop up ice rinks over Christmas. Park and ride: The biggest Christmas shopping headache can come before you’ve even got into town, as car parks turn into traffic jams. Using a park and ride service can provide the hassle-free alternative. Horsham has a park and ride site, Chichester provides one in the run up to Christmas and free parking is available at Withdean Sports Complex, connected to Brighton city centre by the number 27 bus. Using a park ride service can save up to £7 on some routes - enough for the office Secret Santa. Have a plan: The vast amount of stock piled onto shelves at Christmas can be overwhelming and, if you’re pushed for time, can lead to panic buying. Don’t get distracted by the huge choice - make a list of what to buy for who and stick to it. Researching where you can buy your chosen gifts will also help plan your route round town. Be prepared: Having the right bag helps you stay mobile as you weave your way down the high street, while allowing you to stow away smaller purchases. A backpack, shopping trolley or even a wheeled suitcase are all good options. Smart storage: Whether you’re driving into town or using a park and ride, little extras on your car can make a big difference. Across its range of cars Skoda has fitted ‘simply clever’ features - such as an automatic sensor that will open the boot if you’re laden with bags - to help make life a little easier. Other features include a dashboard holder for your parking ticket, an ice scraper tucked in the fuel filler cap and a cylindrical holder for wet umbrellas. Capitol premier for Elliot Swapping classroom for kayaks The filming
A former pupil of a Horsham school has helped a charity by making a promotional film. Elliot Godden’s feature called ‘Make it Happen’ was made for the Coco’s Foundation charity and had its premier at the Capitol Theatre in Horsham. Elliot, who is an ex-Collyer’s student, was invited to make the film by the charity, with all proceeds from the screening donated to the Coco Foundation, who build houses in South Africa for families affected by HIV. Eliot, currently in his second year at Plymouth University, studied both Media and Film Studies while at Collyer’s. His former media and film teachers Jonathan Nunns and Mark Ramey attended its first screening. Mr Nunns said: “I think that making a high quality film on such an important topic, single-
handed, is an incredible achievement for a filmmaker so early in their career. Elliott’s film was emotional, heart-warming, inspirational and uplifting. It really brought home how much we take things for granted in the west and how much difference a little help can make. “Elliot is a superb role model for our current crop of Media and Film Studies students. In addition to talent, you need the inclination to work hard and literally make things happen! Elliott has certainly done that! I could not be prouder.” Mr Ramey said: “It was an honour to attend Elliot’s premiere for ‘Make it Happen’. He’s a talented guy who will certainly go far in the industry. We are incredibly proud of him at Collyer’s and it was a pleasure to support this wonderful event”.
Students learned about leadership and communication by swapping the classroom for kayaks. Farlington School’s Year 11 to 13 PE Watersports group has been taking a nine –week course in kayaking, sailing and paddle boarding. Sessions have been held at Southwater Watersports Centre on Friday afternoons as a physical education choice. Farlington says its sporting ethos is to encourage girls to participate and enjoy sports, to maintain their interest and develop a healthy life beyond school. In Years 11 and above girls are given the option to try a wide variety of activities from golf to
Career advisors succeed in exams Five local careers advisors have passed their Level 4 Diploma in Information, Advice and Guidance. The successful candidates were Lucy Hargreaves and Sue Tye of Collyer’s, Christy Harper Of Horsham Matters, Sally Leyshon of Esher College and Beth Mulligan of Forest School. The careers professionals studied for a year, in a course comprising tasks on guidance legislation, integration with the curriculum and networking. All were observed in their role and given feedback. Course Tutor Mel Hargreaves said: “It is so important that those giving advice and guidance are up to date and have the resources to share best practice. It was a great opportunity to discuss different techniques and to ensure compliance within relevant quality frameworks.” Beth Mulligan, Forest School’s Careers Coordinator, said: “With the removal of Connexions there is limited support for young people and so offering the best advice in schools is vital. This course made me think about what Ofsted are looking for and how I can demonstrate the impact we have on our pupils.” Collyer’s Deputy Principal Steve Nicholls was delighted with the candidates’ success: “Offering appropriate advice and guidance to pupils and stu-
dents is an integral part of managing learners’ progression routes. Massive congratulations to Lucy, Christy, Sally, Beth

and Sue. Feedback from Mel has been outstanding and they are all a credit to their respective organisations.”
indoor climbing. It says the girls found it challenging, yet exciting, to try something outside the normal curriculum. The students learned how to sail safely in calm and windy conditions. They worked in pairs with one student taking control of the sail and the other taking responsibility for the rudder. Under reefed sails in the second week, the girls needed all their newly acquired sailing skills to avoid capsizing in the gusty wind. Paddle boarding was the focus of the next two sessions where balance was key. Stand-up paddle boarding requires core stability and leg strength to maintain balance giving a low-impact, full
body workout. The kayaking lessons gave the students basic paddling experience, helped them create the desired movement of the boat and develop an understanding of how kayak and water interact. Farlington’s John Dwyer, who took the students to Southwater, says, “The girls get so much out of these watersports sessions. As well as the enjoyment of getting out on the lake (and occasionally getting wet!), the students gain teamwork, leadership and communication skills, and many of the girls gain a great deal of confidence. The girls are pictured at the lake.

Horsham Lions Club 6th Swimarathon in 2017
Lions Clubs International, of which Horsham Lions Club is a part, celebrates its Centenary in 2017. Founder, Melvin Jones, formed the first Lions Club in Chicago, 1917. The Swimarathon (one of Horsham Lions’ biggest annual events) will be a part of these centennial celebrations and will take place on March 12, next year.
Kindly hosted by the Pavilions in the Park Leisure Centre, over the last 5 years, the Swimarathon has raised over £23,000 for the club, to be distributed to the following charities: South East Lions Air Ambulance Night Flying Appeal equipping the “Soft Play Area and part of The Sensory Room” at The Horsham Springboard Project Centre pur-
chasing portable defibrillators for the 3 local secondary schools plus the QE II school for children with disabilities providing equipment for The Butterfly Project and The Hop Skip and Jump Centre to help support local children and young adults with learning difficulties. In 2017 the club will be supporting the Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice, which pro-
vides a wide range of services for children, with life-shortening conditions, and their families. Chestnut Tree House services cover all of Sussex and East Hampshire. An annual running cost of their services is £3.5 million each year, of which less than 7% comes from government funding. Chestnut Tree House offers children and their families specialist short breaks at the hospice as well as care in their own homes which allows parents and carers to take a well-earned break from around-the-clock responsibility of caring for a sick child. This could mean a few hours of uninterrupted sleep, a warm leisurely bath or simply more time to spend with their other children. They also offer support to the entire family, following diagnosis and throughout the whole sickness period. From advice and information through to play therapy and counselling, a Care Team of 30 specialist nurses are there with a helping hand, whenever and wherever needed. Most of this support is given outside in the community and the team is there to provide specialist medical care and bereavement support to the whole family at the end of a child’s life. The hospice is in the process of refurbishment and is looking to replace specialist beds, which cost £5000 each, as well as other equipment. Horsham Lions Club want to help this refurbishment program by donating a 50% share of monies raised by the 2017 Swimarathon plus the tax recovered under Gift Aid.

Local firm, Assurity Consulting, will be sponsoring the 2017 Swimarathon. Based in Horsham, they are an independent consultancy specialising in workplace health, safety and environmental solutions. Their customers benefit from more than 30 years’ experience of working with organisations of all sizes, from across all sectors, to manage their compliance responsibilities as efficiently as possible. Horsham Lions Club stated that they are grateful for the sponsorship and donation, which will go a long way in helping cover the administration costs for the event. A club representative said: “The other half of money raised by the swimming event will be donated to a good cause of the entering teams’ choice. This could be a favourite charity, their club funds or school. Or they can support the Horsham Lions Club’s own chosen beneficiary. That decision is up to the team entering, all we ask is that they help us raise as much money as possible! So how can people get involved and take part in the Swimarathon at the Pavilions? It’s all very easy, there is no entry fee and the teams can consist of people aged 8 to 70 inclusive: “The team needs to include up to six swimmers plus an adult non-swimming team captain. The first team member swims one length of the pool and then rests while the other members of the team take turns to swim a length of 25 metres. The first swimmer then swims again, and so on, for 55 minutes. The first teams start swimming at 1pm with other teams starting - on the hour until 4pm when the last teams start their swim. We can accommodate up to 8 teams each hour... Please ask your friends, families or colleages to join the event.” To enter your team today, email Lion Tom Osborne: tomosborne1947@gmail.com or call: 01403 241167 for an entry form and information pack, or to find out more about the Horsham Lions please visit, www.horshamlions.freeuk.com or contact Tom Osborne.

Company’s Christmas cards for charity following employee’s death
Following an employee’s tragic death, civil engineering and groundwork specialists, Rudridge, will be donating the £500 (they would normally spend on Christmas cards and postage) to charity. Tony Marshall, who died after a short illness earlier this year, received emergency assistance from an air ambulance provided by The Wales Air Ambulance Charitable Trust. From its three air bases, the charity can reach anywhere in the country, within 20 minutes, to provide emergency air cover, sup-

port and services to patients and their families. It relies entirely on donations to raise the £6 million needed each year to keep its helicopters flying. In place of traditional Christmas cards, Rudridge will instead send its customers and suppliers online Season’s Greetings via an electronic interactive game, which celebrates the company’s involvement with a firm favourite on the Christmas TV schedule the UK’s Strongest Man. Darren Price, Group Operations Manager at Rudridge, said: “We wanted to do something to
commemorate Tony - who is very much missed and was a great colleague and friend to everyone at Rudridge - and recognise the important service The Wales Air Ambulance Charitable Trust provided, not only to Tony, but to all the other countless families in need of emergency support.” To make a donation to Rudridge’s Remembering Tony Marshall fund, in aid of The Wales Air Ambulance Charitable Trust, please visit www.justgiving.com/fundraising/rememberingtonymarshall

Teamwork, dedication, creativity and friendship were the magic combination, which left an audience spellbound as they watched Ariel’s Othellos. Students from Burgess Hill, Crawley and East Grinstead, and their buddies, performed their annual showcase at the Chequer Mead theatre in East Grinstead on November 20. This year’s show is one which has left a lasting impression and there’s no doubt how much the students, who have special educational needs, enjoyed their night in the limelight. For many, performing at their Ariel Academy is the highlight of their week and their rehearsals certainly paid off. The evening started on a real high, with the whole company singing and dancing to Justin Timberlake’s
‘Can’t stop the Feeling’. Throughout the evening, the musical theatre pieces were extremely strong and engaging - both Calamity Jane and Rock of Ages were full of high energy songs, with complex choreography and gave the students the opportunity to act and deliver lines. Although a touching song with serious lyrics, the cast created a very funny adaptation of Christina Aguilera’s ‘Beautiful,’ set inside a beauty salon. It was a joy to watch, as the students expressed their humorous side. Likewise, South Pacific provided a great run-through of some of the show’s iconic hits, including ‘There is nothing like a Dame’, ‘I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair’ and ‘Happy Talk’. A raft of songs were performed by
each academy, including a rousing rendition of David Bowie’s ‘Heroes’; a touching song and dance ensemble, performed by the older students, to Elvis’s ‘Love Me Tender’ and an atmospheric rendition of ‘California Dreamin’. The first act finished with the very poignant ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, which had the audience singing along. In terms of dramatic delivery, the highlights of the evening included the unforgettable Jack Virgo, from Burgess Hill Academy, performing his solo LAMDA monologue. Jack appeared alone on the stage, with just a chair as a prop, and delivered his excellent LAMDA exam piece called ‘Saturday’. A specially devised drama piece, called ‘Sunbeam’, was a thoughtprovoking, standout piece of thea-
tre, created by Ariel Director, Nicci Hopson, and 14 autistic students aged 11 to 23. In silence, one by one, the students told the story of what it is like growing up with autism. In their own words, they explain that, because they are different and do not conform to social ‘norms’, they are often misunderstood and treated insensitively by those around them. Extremely illuminating, it helped the audience comprehend what living with autism can be like and how differences should be accepted, and in fact celebrated. The evening ended with everyone singing the very apt lyrics to R Kelly’s song ‘The World’s Greatest’, which made for an uplifting and inspirational end to the event and earned a standing ovation from the parents and friends who had come to see the show. Ariel was delighted to have East Grinstead Town Mayor, Cllr Bob Mainstone, and Mayoress, Cllr Christine Mainstone, as guests at the show. The Town Mayor commented: “The Othellos Showcase was one of the most memorable shows we have seen at Chequer Mead. The working together of performers and the sharing of joy, to entertain the audience, was very powerful. “Once the show was underway, the wide range of needs (of the Othello students) disappeared, as their ‘Buddies’ gently guided them through the numbers. The feeling of students working together, with friendship and trust, was evident throughout the show. We admire the special bonds that have been established over a long time period, to develop the freedom of expression and enjoyment on display. We salute the ethos of the Ariel Drama Academies ‘to make the Arts available to all’. There was no doubt this ethos was achieved and we congratulate everyone involved.”

Festive fun at High Places Keeping the kids active over Christmas can be hard at the best of times, but this year the team at High Places Horsham have come up with a great way to keep them active and enjoying the great outdoors. Treat the kids to a festive treasure hunt with a difference this Christmas - When Santa got stuck at High Places. Santa has dropped some of his belongings; track them down as you make your way through a selection of Christmas inspired ground games, then follow the clues using basic orienteering skills, as well as trying out the climbing wall and low ropes course. Can you find Santa? High Places Manager, Joe Roadley, explained: “Following the success of the Haunted High Ropes at Halloween, we wanted to do something for the younger age groups. Our Santa sessions are suitable for 5 years plus, but big kids, aka grown ups, are welcome too, making it an ideal activity for the whole family to enjoy together.” When Santa got stuck at High Places runs from 19 - 31 December, excluding 25 and 26 December, when Santa will be resting. Standard, non-themed, sessions are also available throughout the holidays and you can now purchase combination tickets that

CHRISTMAS FOOLERY Saturday 10 – Saturday 24 December
Roy Wood Big Band Xmas Show Special
Roy Wood and his Rock ‘n’ Roll Band are bringing their unmissable Christmas Show Special to The Hawth Crawley on Monday 12 December. They will be performing all his classic hits, ‘I Can Hear The Grass Grow’, ‘Flowers In The Rain’, ‘Blackberry Way’, ‘California Man’, ‘See My Baby Jive’, ‘I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday’ and many more. Roy Wood was born in Birmingham. Influenced by Hank Marvin’s sound, he started playing the guitar and formed a group called The Falcons at the age of fourteen. At seventeen,
Roy became founder of The Move who went on to enjoy multiple chart successes with songs all written by Roy himself, including top 5 hit singles ‘Flowers In The Rain’ (which reached No. 2 in the charts, and was the first record to be played on BBC Radio One), ‘Night Of Fear’, ‘Fire Brigade’ and ‘I Can Hear The Grass Grow ‘ and number one record in the British singles chart ‘Blackberry Way’. In 1970, Roy teamed up with fellow Birmingham songwriter, Jeff Lynne, who joined The Move for their final two albums. The final single recorded, by The Move, during this period was ‘California
Man’. For a number of years, it had been Roy’s ambition to form a classically based band featuring live strings, instead of the conventional guitar line up. Working with Jeff, The Electric Light Orchestra was born. Roy eventually formed the rock n roll style pop band ‘Wizzard’, together with long-time friend, Rick Price, bassist with The Move. The band went on to score seven major hit records, including two number one singles, ‘See My Baby Jive’ and ‘Angel Fingers’. These were followed by one of the biggest Christmas anthems of all time, ‘I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day’. The Xmas Show Special also features support act, The Vals, who are a well-travelled ‘60sinfluenced pop band from Belfast. The band were recently invited by Paul Weller to join him as special guests for his European tour, playing alongside the Modfather from Brussels to Berlin. During that period The Vals released the LP ‘Wildflower Way’ to much acclaim, winning best album at the Galaxy Awards, London, and showcasing their music on radio and television across Europe, the UK and Ireland. In recent years, the band have shared the stage with Peter Green (Fleetwood Mac), The Zombies, Jeff Beck, Ocean Colour Scene, Echo and the Bunnymen and more. Performance: Mon 12 December 2016, 7.30pm, The Hawth Theatre. Tickets: £30, available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 or online: hawth.co.uk

Horsham ABC’s Zach in a hurry to impress Horsham ABC’s Zach Hurry has a promising future
Amateur Boxing Horsham Amateur Boxing Club’s Zach Hurry, competing in Andover, overcame a tough first round to record an impressive win over his strong opponent. Zach impressed his coaches on the night by recovering from being outfought in round one to regain his composure and put on a superb display of skillful boxing in what was only his second fight to date. Junior Coach Sam Knight said, “Zach was put on the back foot in the first round but came really strong in rounds two and three, proving his fitness and mental strength. He boxed intelligently and deserved the win against a good, solid opponent.” Following his initial early success the very promising Zach will be in action regularly throughout the season with his Horsham ABC coaches hoping for further victories as his technique improves with experience, training and further coaching.
Hawks beaten despite a good performance Basketball Dave Smith - Sports Editor Horsham Hawks U16 team played away to Henfield Heat in what turned out to be an enthralling encounter. In the early stages it was Heat who were the more clinical taking an early 12-5 lead before a 6 nil run brought Hawks back into the contest with Kieran Lee and Ollie Hutt reducing the margin to 2 before Heat replied with a run of their own. Another 3 points at the very end of the first quarter gave Henfield a 23-14 lead. In a high scoring second quarter the teams traded buckets but Heat finished the period the stronger
holding onto a 9 point 43-34 advantage at half time. In Quarter 3 Hawks produced their best basketball of the season so far pegging Heat back to tie the scores at 56 each midway through the period. With two minutes of the quarter remaining, and after some Hawks bad luck, Heat pulled themselves back into it and against the odds went into the final period 7 points up. The injustice of the third quarter seemed to take its toll on Hawks and as they tired Heat took advantage to take the match with an 85 – 69 score-line. Although defeated it was a good performance against one of the top sides.

And finally the next day at Seaford, in the very seasonal Mince Pie 10 mile run, Margaret Wadman claimed a new personal best finishing in 1.41.19.
the break nil - nil, only to concede two goals in the second half. Horsham have been promoted twice in the last four years but with relegation now a distinct threat a confidence boosting win would do them a power of good. Tomorrow (Saturday) at the half way point of the season Horsham men return home for their last game before the Christmas and New Year break to play Henley, one place and one point above them in the table with, like Horsham, two wins from 10 games. Henley were beaten 7-1 by Spencer last week. Only one team in the league, basement side Guildford, still to obtain a single point, has conceded more goals than the 44 going past Henley. Bromley and Beckenham are four points clear at the top of the table.

Photo by Chris Woolgar Chapecoense, the Brazilian team sadly victims of the Colombian air crash, and early YM pressure earned a corner. But, drama soon followed at the other end when keeper Lewis Blaney collided with an attacker and the referee, back on the half way line, awarded a penalty. The poor shot went begging but YM failed to clear, resulting in a Buckland corner, which Simon Laughton side-footed home. YM responded with an immediate attack but Buckland came more and more into the game with another five corners, interspersed with a free kick blazed over. YM’s Phil Johnson headed at the keeper and they had a second
corner negated, until, after 40 minutes, ace free kicker Richard Groves curled one in to the top left corner to give the visitors a two nil cushion at the break. YM looked more energetic on the resumption with a free kick and two corners before Captain Ash Dugdale shot wide and two more set pieces came to nought as opportunities came and went unthreateningly. Then, Buckland broke away, culminating in Lloyd Gardner one on one with the keeper and with time and space a plenty he nonchalantly found the goal. Dave Brown went on a dinking run for YM and
Max Howell got through, both unrewarded, but in reality YM’s Wembley dream had long since evaporated – Buckland had attacked and defended better, and converted their chances. YM President Ron Moulding told the District Post: “We’re still suffering from injuries and had U21s on the pitch, but no excuses – they were better than us. We created chances but couldn’t capitalise on them, which they did.” Mid-table YMCA return to league action tomorrow (Saturday) with a trip to Crabtree Park to take on struggling Wick.

with a stunning header with the big win taking Chesworth to the top of the league table. Chesworth Rovers U13 2 - 1 Broad Oak and Horam U13 Following the big league win the day before Chesworth U13’s were in Sussex Cup action on Sunday. Having gone into the break 1 goal down Chesworth had it all to do in the second half if they wanted to progress to the Quarter Final. A much improved display produced slick passing and move-
ment off the ball which earned an equaliser. And then, for the second week running, the last kick of the game saw Chesworth as deserved winners and into the draw for the quarter finals. Horsham Sparrows U13 - Sparrows started brightly at home to third placed East Grinstead Meads Inter and took an early lead as Ollie followed up from Louis’s free-kick. East Grinstead equalised when a high cross hit the back post and bounced in. In the second half Sparrows came under growing pressure and fell behind. Jacob then hit a spectacular long range effort before Hugh headed home from a Louis corner to give Sparrows a 3 – 2 win. MoM Jacob. Horsham Sparrows U16 – Sparrows faced a determined Lower Beeding and conceded 3 goals in the first half. A stronger display in the second half saw the team put pressure on the home team and after hitting the post and coming close on several occasions; a goal from Josh wasn’t enough in the end. MoM Paul. Horsham Sparrows Women’s Team – The 10 players of sparrows played some excellent football on the 3G artificial pitch which saw then take the lead early on through Naomi, and then after conceding 2 goals deservedly drew level at 2-2 when Imy scored an exquisite chip from 25 yards. Despite going in 3-2 against the 11 of Lancing Arrows again came out playing the better football. With injuries to Harriet in goal and Juliette which necessitated long breaks in play it was no surprise that lancing scored 3 in the final 5 minutes as the sparrows ladies tired after putting in so much effort. FA Vase - Round 3 Horsham YMCA 0 - 3 Buckland Athletic Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham YMCA were hoping for a win for Buckland – their Manager Peter Buckland – but the wrong Buckland won, Buckland Athletic, currently fourth in the Western League Premier Division, whose sociable supporters had made the long trip from Newton Abbot, Devon, Peter’s native county. Broadbridge Heath got back to winning ways on Tuesday night with victory at home to Wick in the SCFL Premier Division, a result that sees them maintain 6th position and close the gap on the teams above. Heath got off to the perfect start after only 5 minutes when a Wick attack broke down on the edge of the Heath penalty area and a quick counter-attack by Dean Wright put Jamal Sultan away down the right flank. The midfielder advanced with the ball before swinging in a right foot cross which was converted at the far post by Jake Holmes stooping low to head home. The visitor’s played some good possession football but their final ball into the box was all too easy for Heath ‘keeper Michael Chester, while at the other end the visitors ‘keeper Lewis Boughton was kept busy throughout the half with saves from Ollie Moore twice, Jamal Sultan and the best of the bunch a full length save to deny Jake Holmes a second. Heath added their 2nd goal 5 minutes into the restart, a long free kick was floated towards the far post in the Wick penalty area, Boughton rose high to gather but under pressure dropped the ball at the feet of Moore who stabbed it over the line from 2 yards. Tim Martin scored Heaths 3rd midway through the second period, Holmes intercepted a pass and played in Martin who went on to slot past the advancing Boughton. Wick scored a late consolation goal in the dying minutes when Moore brought down a Wick player just inside the box and Robert Hutchins converted from the resulting spot kick. Heath now hosts Lancing in the league tomorrow (Saturday December 10). The visitors are in 11th place, 10 points behind Heath.
Roffey maintained their top spot with this third consecutive league win. Goals from Nick Cranston and Ryan Howes gave them the half-time lead. However, after the break Colts played with more aggression and purpose and were soon level through goals from Smith and Augustus. Roffey re-took the lead when Colts’ keeper was ruled to have brought down Aidan Gamble. Ben Gibbs converted the spot kick. Colts continued to press in search of an equaliser, but the final minutes, Joe McGrane’s spectacular leftfoot shot put the result beyond doubt.

Ten man Heath robbed of early ‘goal’ Moore’s header clearly crossed the line but was disallowed by the referee
Photo by Gary Chester SCFL Premier Division Hassocks 1 - 1 Broadbridge Heath Football Andy Crisp - BBHFC For the trip to Hassocks, Heath welcomed back Piers McDermott and Ollie Moore who missed the previous away trip to Worthing United and both players were involved in the first controversial moment of the game after only 3 minutes. After Hassocks ‘keeper James Broadbent had pushed a Ollie
Moore shot over the crossbar from the resulting corner Piers McDermott found Moore at the far post and his header was pushed into the roof of the net by Broadbent. As Heath celebrated Broadbent gathered the ball and threw it out to a teammate and as play continued the realisation that inexplicably referee Jamie Collumbell had waved play on. The Heath players and management were stunned by the decision but their appeals were ignored and the game continued with Heath dominating play
and finally taking the lead on 16 minutes when Jake Holmes played a through ball into the path of Tim Martin who drilled a low shot past Broadbent into the bottom right corner. Minutes before the break Heath were reduced to 10 men when McDermott barged into a Hassocks player and the referee had little option but to show the midfielder a straight red. The second half was very much a case of backs to the wall as Heath played with one up front and defended as if their lives depended on it. Hassocks, with the extra man, had most of the possession but rarely did they threaten the Heath goal, their best chance came to Nathan Miles who headed a cross straight into the arms of Michael Chester and it looked like Heath were going to hold on for the win until deep into injury time when Phil Gault converted with a side foot from six yards. Hours after the game Heath Manager Steve Painter said “I’m still mystified why the referee had not allowed the goal, the ball was clearly pushed into the roof of the net by the goalkeeper, everyone could see it, even the linesman signalled a goal, why didn’t the referee speak to his linesman?”

last 15 and during this match put in what was undoubtedly the worst performance since their relegation season. In fairness there are a number of first team certain starters out injured that have resulted in recent line ups containing a number of youngsters who, although they have performed well, are in the deep end a little too early. Tom Lawley was missing from this match – suspended after
picking up 5 yellow cards – and again the inexperienced duo of Louie Downey and Ollie Gill became the Hornets attacking options. All that said this was a particularly dire performance that uncharacteristically lacked passion and effort. The opening minute did not indicate what was to come as from the kick off Downey won the ball and found Darren Boswell who fired wide when he really should of at least made ‘keeper Denzel Gerrar work. From then on however Casuals dominated and Horsham were playing damage limitation. The home side began amassing chances as Jack Sammoutis, Roscoe Dsane and ex Hornet Gabriel Odunaike all had good opportunities to open the scoring. The continued pressure eventually paid off for the home side when with a half hour played Malachi Hudson powered his way into the area before hammering a fierce drive past Josh Pelling. Surprisingly, given the balance of play, it was this narrow advantage that Casuals took into the break. If hopes were for a Hornets revival in the second 45 then that was soon dashed as Casuals continued to dominate and have all of the meaningful possession. The advantage was doubled when after escaping an error from Scott Kirkwood another mistake – this time from ‘keeper Pelling – allowed Sammoutis the simple task of taping into the Hornets net. With 2 minutes remaining Horsham were put completely out of their misery when Hudson, who had looked a class above all match, picked out Sammoutis who fired the ball past Pelling to bring to an end a match that Horsham will be looking to forget and to quickly move on from.
YM suffer second cup defeat in a week SCFA RUR Cup QF Horsham YMCA 0 – 2 Newhaven Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor Horsham YMCA lost their Quarter Final cup tie against Newhaven on Tuesday evening, just days after crashing out of the FA Vase against Buckland Athletic. Their chances of reaching the semi-final were dealt a massive blow when inexplicably, and with just 25 minutes played, YM’s Ben Godfrey grabbed Jayson Sowter’s neck, having already been yellow carded, to earn his second yellow and to leave his team a man down with over an hour to play. Despite the disadvantage of having just 10 players on the pitch the match never really got going and the teams were locked at a goalless stalemate come the referee’s half time whistle. The extra man began to take its toll on YM as the sec-
ond half progressed and the inevitable Newhaven opening goal came with just over an hour played. The visitors wide man Kyle Woolven picked up the ball and powered past a desperate challenge to smash the ball past the exposed Lewis Blaney in the YM goal. The match was over as a contest in the 79th minute when Newhaven doubled their lead; Ryan Knight being given too much space to glance a header past Blaney from an in swinging corner. The last victory for YM was in early November when they thumped Lancing 7-1, since then they have conceded 14 goals and scored 3 in reply, with a draw at Eastbourne Town being the only positive result. Manager Peter Buckland will be hoping for three much needed points and a morale boost tomorrow (Saturday December 10) when YM visit second bottom Wick in a league match.
Fog cancels Hornets visit to Hastings Football Horsham’s league match at Hasting United’s Pilot Field ground on Tuesday evening fell foul to thick coastal fog that swept in from the channel as darkness fell. Although United sit just 2 places above Horsham in the table they have a number of games in hand with the teams above them and 5 in hand over the Hornets, so it would have been a difficult match for manager Dom Di Paola and his side. Horsham
remain in 13th place with 26 points from their 22 games played and now welcome Ramsgate to Gorings Mead tomorrow (Saturday December 10) who lie 5 places behind their hosts with 4 points less. With a few days to go before the Ramsgate match eyes will be on the in-door at Horsham as Di Paola may again need to bolster his attacking options with a forward or two, even if only for the short term.
