1,000 new jobs in Horsham given £3.66 million boost Councillors Goldsmith and Catchpole on site
phil dennett News Editor
Work seekers have been given a £3.66 million boost towards 1,000 new jobs in Horsham. Businesses and housing are planned at the old health care firm Novartis site in Wimblehurst Road in one of the most important developments for many years for the town. Now the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership has awarded £3.66 million to West Sussex County Council towards the purchase of the 18.6 acre site. The Novartis site was originally identified as a higher education facility with other related employment uses after the firm moved out. But that plan was wrecked when Brighton University decided not to proceed with its ambitious scheme. The success of the new scheme will depend on money made from housing on part of the site, which will require planning approval.
The count y council says a lot of work has taken place since it announced last year it intended to buy the site. Detailed work has been carried out, including site evaluations to ensure the council is securing a good deal for the taxpayer with its initial investment. The demolition of several buildings has also taken place to prepare the site for any new development. Leader of the county council Louise Goldsmith said: “I am delighted the LEP has awarded £3.66 million towards the purchase of the site. By committing funding, the LEP is showing their confidence in our plans. Our ambition is to transform the site into a quality employment and residential development and we are working with commercial advisors to finalise our vision and proposition for the site by developing the right mix of business, office accommodation and start up space to transform it. Any businesses interested in this redevelopment opportunity can find out more at www.investwestsussex.co.uk/ novartissite

Animal cruelty on the rise Allegations of cruelty to animals rose by 10 per cent in West Sussex in a year. Figures released by the Southwater-based RSPCA national headquarters also show a 13 per cent rise in East Sussex, making it the biggest increase in the South East. A dog beaten in lift, a kitten killed by blunt force, and a German shepherd dog so collapsed he appeared dead all feature in the new RSPCA report, released on Wednesday. The RSPCA investigated more than 35,000 animal cruelty cases in the South East last year - a rise of nearly 4% compared to the previous 12 months. This works out at about 97 complaints investigate every day or an average of four an hour. East Sussex saw the largest increase in allegations of animal cruelty in the South East - a rise of nearly 13% from 1,959 in 2015 to 2,211 in 2016. The animal welfare charity’s annual figures released today (Wednesday 29 March) also show that there were more complaints made to us about incidents in Greater London than anywhere else
in the country in 2016 - 11,812 - which was up nearly 9% on 2015. Nationally there were 400 allegations of animal cruelty every day last year with a total of 148,604 and a rise of nearly 5% from 2015. Calls to the RSPCA’s 24-hour cruelty hotline also rose by nearly 4%, which amounted to more than 1.15million calls last year - averaging one every 27 seconds. Paul Stilgoe, RSPCA Superintendent for the South East said: “I never stop feeling appalled when I look back at the shocking catalogue of cruelty the region’s inspectors are called about. We investigate such horrific cases of abuse and extreme neglect - as this year’s figures and case studies show “Thankfully, there are also some happy endings to remind us what we strive for. As well as investigating the cruelty, our inspectors and animal centre staff rescue, rehabilitate and rehome thousands of animals a year, and this year there are some particularly touching stories in the region about the lives some of them have gone on to lead.”

Pilot James grounded for charity James Bowey
Airline pilot James Bowey from Horsham will keep his feet firmly on the ground for charity. James is preparing to take on the seaside route running with team NSPCC in the Brighton Marathon on April 9. Starting at Preston Park, one of Brighton’s largest parks, the runners will pound past the iconic sites of Brighton to cheers from a number of acts, bands and wellwishers. Brighton Marathon is known for its lively atmosphere that helps runners like James cross the finish line in one of the UK’s most vibrant cities. Every mile that is run for team NSPCC and every penny raised will mean that when a child needs help, the NSPCC can reach them. James will be helping to support services which include the NSPCC’s Speak Out. Stay Safe Schools Service which delivers safeguarding assemblies and workshops to teach children the tools needed to keep them safe
from abuse. James, 25, said: “I find it empowering to help those who need it most and children should have the opportunity for a good start in life. I was fortunate in my childhood to have a good home and had the opportunity to experience many different exciting things and helping the NSPCC is a way of me giving something back. “The Brighton Marathon is a fantastic local race which has great support along the whole coastline and it’s another challenge for the year.” Georgie Swinbank, NSPCC fundraiser, said: “This is a fun event that is perfect for runners of all levels and experience. By choosing to support the NSPCC, James, is helping us reach even more young people and we are very grateful. We will be there on the day cheering team NSPCC on.” To find out more about fundraising for the NSPCC, visit www. nspcc.org.uk/what-you-can-do/ do-your-own-fundraising

School bounces back after fire
Sport enthusiasts and staff were evacuated from a leisure centre after fire started at a neighbouring school. Firefighters restricted blaze damage at the Weald Community and Sixth Form School, Billingshurst school to only one room in the fire on Tuesday evening. Classes opened as usual on Wednesday. Manager of Billingshurst Leisure Centre Dale Whitford told the Post: “As a precaution the whole leisure centre was evacuated.” Among those evacuated were about 15 swimmers from the Atlantis swimming club based in Horsham, ranging from 10-14 years old. They were coming to the end of their session and evacuated in silver blankets. They sat in cars of parents and most went home without belongings which were collected next day. Only head teacher Peter Woodman and another staff member were in the school at the time the fire started just before 7pm and no-one was hurt. The fire began in a ceramics room, which was 20 per cent damaged by the flames and suffered 80 per cent damage from heat and smoke. Other rooms suffered light smoke-logging but the fire did not spread to them. The cause of the fire was still being investigated earlier this week. Two West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service crews from Horsham attended the fire initially, and were joined by crews from Petworth and Crawley and support vehicles. The school’s communications manager Izzy Lewis said on Wednesday morning: “Fortunately, there were two members of staff still on site, including Mr Woodman the headteacher, when the fire alarm rang at about 6.50 pm and they quickly discovered the fire. The fire services were contacted immediately and they arrived and put out the fire very
swiftly. No-one was hurt in the fire and the damage has been limited to the ceramics room. As a result, the school is completely
safe and open as normal. The cause of the fire is not yet known but an investigation is currently taking place.”
Chance to quiz councillors
Villagers at Billingshurst get the chance to quiz their parish councillors at a meeting next Wednesday evening. As an additional item The Wey and Arun Canal Trust will be topping the bill at this year’s Annual Parish Meeting of Electors on April 5. The doors open at 7pm, to give an opportunity to have a tea or coffee before the meeting starts at 7.30pm at the Community and Conference Centre in Roman Way. Under local government law all parish and town councils have to organise a dedicated meeting each year where electors of the area can ask questions and raise matters of concern with their elected representatives. This year, representatives from the canal trust, a lo-
cal tourist attraction based at Loxwood who are restoring London’s missing link to the sea, will be giving an illustrated update on their progress to date and plans for the future. With parish council chairman councillor Paul Berry in the chair, electors will also have the chance to quiz the parish council on its activities and finances over the last year and also raise any other matters about the parish. Greg Burt, the parish council clerk said: “Whilst the parish council has to organise this annual meeting, it is a meeting for electors of the Parish and not a council meeting, so we do encourage residents to come along and exercise their democratic right”

charity’s catering team and served by their team of volunteers. The Charity’s Chief Executive Officer, Sonia Mangan said: “Our Strictly Vintage Tea Dance gets more and more popular every year, with this fourth event selling out a few weeks before and putting us now firmly on the dancing map of Horsham. “We are so pleased that we decided to run two tea dances this year, as those who couldn’t get tickets for March are on the list for September. “We hope that all our guests will return again for another
wonderful afternoon of dancing and to support our charity. In the meantime we have lots of exciting event and activities planned for the next few months, and I would encourage our local community to get in touch to find out more about our charity and to see for themselves how the money raised from such events is spent.” The event raised £2,400 and was sponsored by Dark Star Brewery at Partridge Green. Swimmers break records for charity Rash of red noses good sign Record breakers
resenting the sponsors of the event, Assurity Consulting, called the Doggy Paddlers, brought the event to an exciting finish by swimming 194 lengths within the 55 minutes swimming time. This was an all-time record in the six years of the Swimarathon being held. Earlier in the day, the Young Challengers A Team swam what organizers called a fantastic 184 lengths which was only two lengths behind the event’s standing record of 186 lengths
A rash of red noses had a positive sign for school children and staff. They were not suffering from colds, but instead giving a warm welcome to Red Nose Day. Pictured are children at Billingshurst Primary School, who were busy selling red noses in the runup to the day. The school has raised £480 from the selling of the noses,
which has earned the school Super School Status with the Red Nose fund raising team. The pupils and staff also supported the day with additional fundraising including “Wear something red to school” and a cake sale. The money raised by the public is spent by Comic Relief to help people living what organisers call “incredibly tough lives” both here in the UK and Africa.

Swimmers broke records at a stroke in this year’s Horsham Swimarathon for charity. They doubled the previous highest amount raised, winning pledges for £10,208.79 for their efforts at Pavilions in the Park. 30 teams took part, swimming 3,288 lengths in the 25 metre main pool, beating the 2016 total by 77 lengths. This is equal to 82,200 metres or 54.8 metric miles, again beating last year in overall distance. To cap it all, the team rep-
held until this year by Forest Boys School from the first Swimarathon. 11th Horsham scouts summed up the spirit with their slogan “You’ll Never Swim Alone”. Organisers Horsham Lions Club said: “It was another outstanding day, well attended by everyone having an interest in the event, their families, friends and support groups. “Hats off to the disabled swimmers who were just remarkable in their efforts to compete with the best of them. A big thank you to Silver Swimmers A and B teams and to the Sunbeam Swimming Club For The Disabled, for being there, for taking part and for doing just a great job of it. Thanks to all 180 swimmers for making it a great day out and memorable occasion.” More than half of the money raised amount will go to the nominated charity, Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice in Arundel, and will purchase one new bed for the hospice and go a long way towards a second bed there. The hospice is replacing specialist beds at a cost of £5000 each, as well as other equipment. The other half of receipts go to charities selected by participating teams.

Drink problem scheme re-launched
find us on facebook horsham.news
School governors join in poor funding row Cash protest
A scheme to help people with a drink problem spiralling out of control into crime has been re-launched in West Sussex. It is aimed at people who have committed crimes while on a relatively low level of alcohol. The scheme is designed to help them avoid becoming worse offenders. Sussex Police is working with Druglink and being supported by West Sussex County Council to deliver a policereferred Alcohol Diversion Scheme to help reduce the level of alcohol fuelled crime. The scheme is targeted at people in West Sussex over the age of 18 and focuses on the health and education of those in the community who are drinking above the recommended lower risk levels. This scheme is a simple way of dealing with an offender who has committed a low level alcohol related crime. The aim is to effectively engage with individuals and their drinking habits and to look differently at how to deal with alcohol-related offending. Run by Druglink, the three
hour course addresses the link between alcohol and violence and reinforces the significant physical and psychological harms associated with binge drinking. It also explores alcohol content and units providing insight into the strength of certain drinks and explaining behaviour in relation to those drinks. Chief Inspector Justin Burtenshaw said: “We have an opportunity to make a real difference here, and tackle what is a growing problem in society. We are also looking to extend this scheme in the future to include drug use, underage drinkers, for use around targeted operations for anti-social behaviour and longer term to incorporate highlighting awareness of the link between gambling and crime. “By focussing on addressing lower level criminal activity with the use of problem solving and preventive educational measures, the wider impact is that there is potentially a reduction in more serious crime. What is key is that we look at the cause, as opposed to the symptoms.”
Governors have joined in the national row over inadequate funding of schools. The latest is a group at Billingshurst Primary School, which is pointing out that a new formula for giving schools money is unfair and needs to be revised. Abi Smit, a parent governor at Billingshurst Primary School said: “We have put together a campaign called FUND. US to raise awareness of the lack of funding we will get from the governments funding consultation. “We have had a massive response so far and are hoping to get parents to fill out the questionnaire for the funding consultation to explain that the basic formula is wrong for our school. The FUND.
US is a acronym for Future, Unfair, Nothing Else, Done all we can, Unhelpful, Sign and we have badges and banners and videos with the children to raise awareness and try and encourage parents to fill out the funding document. “The government hasn’t made it easy but we are hoping to get as many responses in as we can. We are ready to fight for more funding.” The governing body planned to be up at the school gates every morning to make sure it can get the message across to as many parents as possible. The debate has reached national level, including protests to the Tory-run Government from schools
in Tory-run councils, and the issue has been raised in the House of Commons. Angry headmasters across West Sussex have already warned that children in West Sussex schools could have their lessons cut because of a money crisis. They said they might also consider other measures unless the Government gives West Sussex County Council about £20 million to stave off a serious situation. The challenge from Conservative-dominated West Sussex is a potential embarrassment for the Conservative government, although school leaders say their challenge is across the political spectrum.

International star inspires youngsters at old school
Diners find an appetite for helping others Restaurant staff with Terri from Macmillan
Amelia with pupils
A former pupil who became an international player showed a school her football skills. At only 17 talented Amelia Ritchie has played several international matches for the full Wales Women’s team and has already turned semi-professional with Brighton. She says her real dream however, is to play for Liverpool, her favourite club.
Throughout the week Amelia inspired many of the senior and junior girls at the Towers Convent School at Upper Beeding with her skills and drills in each of the lessons. Amelia started her sports love affair helping Towers win at other sports. Headmistress Clare Trelfa said: “She was also kind enough
to run some extra practices at lunch times. The girls thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and loved Amelia’s style of delivery. “While at The Towers Amelia was always a highly respected team member of The Towers’ successful netball and rounders teams, which won both the leagues and the tournaments every year.”
Diners delivered a bonus for a cancer charity. The recently opened Bamboo Chinese and Thai Restaurant at Billingshurst staged a set menu meal for more than 30 people. The dinner raised more than
£700 for the Billingshurst Macmillan Support Group. Rowena Harris, from the group, said:” Thanks to the generosity of the Bamboo this was a very successful evening and more are planned.”

A charity expected to last for four years celebrated its 20th anniversary of helping people with learning difficulties. West Sussex Learning Links, whose three staff are based in Partridge Green, celebrated its milestone in Storrington. Its work across West Sussex proved so impressive that it attracted funding from the BIG Lottery and numerous trusts and foundations and more than 1.4 million has been awarded to the charity since 1997. As times change the Project has diversified its activities and
provides buddies for social and leisure activities as well as one to one support for non-vocational adult education classes. More than 600 people, known to the charity as “students” have now joined the project during its lifetime, participating with activities of their choice. The charity says that without what it calls the “fantastic” support from 450 volunteers during the past 20 years none of these students would have been able to access these chosen activities alone. Castle date with Beach Boys for band Spongers for good cause Spongers attack
Outside the castle
Teachers got into the spirit of Comic Relief fund raising. They surrendered themselves as willing targets for young sponge throwers. Pictured are a victim and en-
thusiastic spongers at Farlington School in Horsham. Many events were held in the district to help the cause. This one was organised by year seven pupils at the school.
Road safety ends in hot chocolate The Beach Boys were favourites when a talented group of 40 young musicians from a Horsham school performed in a castle to help raise money for charity. They took part at Arundel Castle in ‘Celebrating Sussex Childhood’ for Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice, young people’s charity Winston’s Wish and also supporting Home-Start Arun. The event was held in the Baron’s Hall and was hosted by Mark Spofforth OBE, High Sheriff of West Sussex, in the presence of
the Duke and Duchess of Norfolk and Henry, Earl of Arundel. Mollie Sellors, 13, who plays the oboe in the Christ’s Hospital band that performed said: “Our musical programme consisted of a wide range of pieces, from both the classical and modern eras, including a Jackson five medley. My personal favourite piece was Farandole by Bizet which was arranged for concert band. I like this piece because it is a bold piece with a fast pace. “The audience seemed to especially enjoy the 1960’s Beach Boys
medley; people started to sing along and dance.” Alex Stewart, first trumpet player, said: “The band concert at Arundel was the first opportunity I’d ever had to go inside a medieval castle. As we approached the castle, the exterior was simply breath-taking. The experience really sank in when we were lead through the complex network of corridors and stairs which, along with our Tudor uniform, felt like a trip back in time.” Pictures courtesy of Graham Franks.

Hot chocolate was the reward for youngsters learning to stay safe on the roads. They took part in a West Sussex Bikeability Course and proved their proficiency on the roads around the village of Upper Beeding. The Year 6 girls from the Towers Convent School at Upper Beeding ended the week with Level 2 certificates and celebrated with a large hot chocolate each. Many schools run similar schemes to promote the issue of safety of cyclists.

Jane’s tale wins over the judges The winner
A book for children about bullying called How to Fly With Broken Wings proved a hit with teachers. The Weald School Book Award went to its author Jane Elson, who has worked as an actress and comedy improviser. The book reveals how Willem, 12, who has Asbergers Syndrome, suffers bullying but with the help of a friend overcomes his problems. Seven book titles were shortlisted by a committee that is made up of both Weald School at Billingshurst and feeder primary school teachers. The books are mostly written by new authors and have been published recently. Other titles included The Girl of Ink and Stars by Kiran Millwood Hargrave,
The Uncommoners by Jennifer Bell, Alfie Bloom by Gabrielle Kent, Island by Nicky Singer, The Boy and the Globe by Tony Bradman and My Brother is a Superhero by David Solomons. Run by Jane Fella, Learning Resources Centre Manager, and Elaine McKenna, Teacher of English, it brings together a number of our current Year 7 pupils and Year 6 students from most of Weald’s feeder primary schools. The award not only encourages students to read more, but also supports the transition process that prepares Year 6 students for life at The Weald. During after school book club sessions, students are actively
encouraged to read as many titles as possible and then take part in competition categories that have inspired them, these range from designing your own book cover, creative writing, making a film trailer or devising a new character for one of the books. Kiran Millwood Hargrave author of The Girl of Ink and Stars came into The Weald School in January and gave a talk to all the Weald Book Award participants about writing the book and the inspiration she gained from visiting La Gomera. Jane Fella said: “Jane was clearly thrilled with her win, and warmly thanked the panel for their votes.”

District MPs complain to Government about school under-funding Two Conservative MPs covering Horsham district are among those from West Sussex protesting to the Government about underfunding of schools. Jeremy Quin of Horsham and Nick Herbert of Arundel and South Downs backed a letter In which the West Sussex MPs raise concerns that, under the new formula, a third of the schools in West Sussex will actually lose funding, despite the County’s starting point as the worst funded in the country. While 167 schools in West Sussex will gain funding, two will receive no change, and 94 will lose funding, many of them rural primary schools. Mr Quin and Mr Herbert are joined by Sir Peter Bottomley, Tim Loughton. Sir Nicholas Soames (Mid and Andrew Tyrie MP (Chichester). As Schools Minister and Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Education Secretary respectively, neither Nick Gibb MP nor Henry Smith are able to sign the letter. Nick Herbert, representing his West Sussex colleagues,
was a member of a delegation of MPs which met the Prime Minister to express their view that the proposed schools funding formula needs to be changed. The MPs argue that schools in other areas which have historically had significantly better resourcing are far better placed to deal with these funding pressures. They point out that, while all schools in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, the best funded in the country, will lose funding, with an average loss of 2.7 per cent, their funding per pupil will still be £6,718, compared to £4,257 in West Sussex. Mr Herbert said: “West Sussex MPs recognise the pressures on our local schools and have been calling for fair funding for some time. “The Government has made a step in the right direction with its proposed new Funding Formula, which will mean extra resources for West Sussex, but it needs to go further. “We will continue to fight for a fair deal for West Sussex and our local schools.”

Focus on degree apprenticeships A word or two from Juliet Juliet is welcomed
Youngsters at the session
Students saw degree apprenticeships put into focus at a session in Horsham. As part of National Apprenticeship Week, Collyer’s followed up on the success and interest generated by its record-breaking NG2U ‘Not Going to Uni’ evenings by hosting an event for 40 of its students and also local employers to find out more about Chartered Degree Apprenticeships, which are available through Chichester University. Although the majority of Collyer’s students progress to university and higher education, the school says a number of students are contemplating taking alternative progression routes. Andrew Adams from Chichester University spoke about the
Chartered Management Degree Apprenticeship, how it works, how students can ‘earn and learn’ at the same time by attending university for one day per week and gain practical experience by working for a local employer the other four days. Degree Apprenticeship students graduate after four years, already a step ahead of the competition, as they have four year’s work experience as well as an honours degree. Employers in attendance were Nicola Thurston from Talenterprize, Ian Robinson from Assurity Consulting and Graham Cuthbert from Red River Software. Graham Cuthbert from Red River Software spoke about how, as an employer, the Degree Ap-
prenticeship scheme benefits their business and how their current apprentices add value as well as a fresh perspective. Collyer’s Ian McAlister said: “It is vital we stay ahead of the game with regard to the changing landscape of careers, apprenticeships and degrees. This is just one of many events we will be running, as part of a very busy progression programme.” A-level student Riyanna Limbachia said: “I found the sessions very useful because the excellent speakers gave a clear, practical insight into degree apprenticeships. There are certainly more alternative pathway opportunities out there than you would think.”
Students had a word or two from a former pupil who became a journalist. Collyer’s welcomed Juliet Jacques, who writes about film, art, music, politics, gender, sexuality and football. Her work has appeared in The Guardian, New Statesman, London Review of Books, Granta, Sight and Sound, Frieze and TimeOut. The talk in the college lecture theatre was enjoyed by more than 50 students and teachers from across the Collyer’s school community, and the audience also included some students from local secondary schools and one of her former teachers. The talk focussed on Juliet’s personal experiences which led her to writing her book “Trans: A Memoir.” Juliet
answered questions from the students about advice for young people with gender dysphoria and challenging transphobia. Juliet said: “So much has changed. Today’s students have so much information and discussion about gender and sexuality and I’m always fascinated to hear about how they understand these issues.”

A Horsham first for talented craft workers Talented craft workers in The Sussex Guild will be holding their first Contemporary Craft Show of 2017 in Horsham in early April. The Guild says this is the first time the guild has held a craft show in this part of Sussex. The venue will be the spacious Parkside building, close to the railway station and only five minutes’ walk from the centre of historic Horsham. At Parkside there will be what the guild describes as a spectacular variety of superb, well-designed and beautifully made crafts. There is a chance to meet the designer makers with their ceramics, furniture, glass, jewellery, metalwork, printmaking, stone carving, textiles and woodwork. Organising the event on behalf of the Sussex Guild are Edith Pargh
Barton and Sallyann Dunn. Edith, who lives near Horsham, works in textiles creating unusual, fabric sculptures and colourful tea lights. Sallyann makes children’s clothes that are decorated with traditional smocking. Visitors can meet members, all professional designer makers, and discuss how their work is created, order special commissions and make purchases. The show will take place on Saturday and Sunday of this weekend from 10am to 5pm. For information about the Guild’s activities visit the Sussex Guild Shop & Gallery, Southover Grange, Southover Rd, Lewes BN7 1TP, T: 01273 479565 (between 10.00am and 5.00pm) or see: www. thesussexguild.co.uk
Wendy
Pulborough Neighbourhood Wardens, Carol Boniface and Vanessa Green, recently joined staff from Tesco, Pulborough Parish Council and a local resident volunteer, to do a bit of spring cleaning. As part of the Pocket Park Project, the volunteers braved both rain and sun to help clear up a small area of park in Pulborough. Carol explained: “The area is used by all and is a natural habitat for wildlife. However, it has become neglected and little rundown over
time. “Tesco has taken it on as a community project, to try and revitalise the area and turn it into a fun and safe area for everyone to enjoy, and we were keen to help.” Vanessa added: “The clear-up involved litter picking, removing brambles, clearing pathways and clearing the stream of debris whilst preserving the wildlife habitat. It was very rewarding to see the end results and we are now looking for volunteers to help maintain the area.”
Karen Brooks, Community Champion for Tesco, said: “This is a project that I am keen to drive forward for the community. The difference the volunteers have made in just a couple of days is huge, as the area looks much cleaner and clearer now.” If you are interested in helping with the project, please contact Karen Brooks by emailing: Pulborough@communityattesco. co.uk. Updates and information can be found on the community board in Tesco.

Hepworths Launches new Brewery Premises
The District Post MD Davey Pearson with Andy Hepworth Local brewery, Hepworth, changed location, after over 15 years at its original site. Ever increasing popularity, since opening the Hepworth doors to business in 2001, has led the company to outgrow premises in
Horsham’s Railway Yard. The new footprint, designed by Andy Hepworth, needed a few acres. Sites of such a size do not come cheap in the South East of England and are laden with caveats regarding planning. None,
Has your tenancy deposit been protected? Business Lucy Penfold - Stevens Drake Many people think that being a landlord has many perks and that it’s an easy way to have a second, third or even forth property with secured income each month. Well, yes, that is true, but there are many implications for landlords that are not always recognised by the onlooker, or indeed the tenant. As a tenant, it’s good to know what your rights are and what the landlord’s obligations are, in this instance I’m focussing on the tenancy deposit. Tenancy Deposit Schemes If you have an assured shorthold tenancy agreement, your landlord needs to secure the full deposit into a properly certified tenancy deposit scheme. The landlord cannot keep the deposit in a personal bank account. Once your landlord has received the deposit, they have 30 days to tell you: the address of the rented property; how much deposit has been paid; how the deposit is protected; the name and contact details of the tenancy deposit protection (TDP) scheme and its dispute resolution service; their (or the letting agen-
cy’s) name and contact details; the name and contact details of any third party that’s paid the deposit; why they would keep some or all of the deposit; how to apply to get the deposit back; what to do if you can’t get hold of the landlord at the end of the tenancy; and what to do if there’s a dispute over the deposit. You normally receive this information when your landlord sends you a copy of the tenancy deposit scheme certificate, which will have all of the prescribed information in. If your landlord has not protected the deposit, you could be entitled to recover your deposit and up to three times the deposit amount by way of compensation. Our litigation team at stevensdrake can review your tenancy agreement and documents to see if you have a claim and start proceedings, if necessary. If you would like to discuss any landlord and tenant disputes you might have, then please contact a member of our litigation team for a no obligation chat on 01293 596900 or email Lucy Penfold on lucy. penfold@ stevensdrake. com.
including Andy, of the core personnel wished to move and their skills were essential. The new site had to be in the South East, finance and planning notwithstanding. Christie Price, at Hepworth, said: “Many potential sites to rent were investigated, but all were fatally flawed. Andy is very particular about his breweries and would not settle for a compromise. The New Brewery had to fulfil many conditions, and we, the Directors, had come to the conclusion that we had to buy and build. “We were helped to our current
situation by helpful HDC officers, who pointed out the potential to buy land from Brinsbury College. The land was local, and large enough to plan to Andy’s satisfaction. We are hugely grateful for the support of HDC. “Our shareholders have been more than generous, indulgent even. They have been patient for many years with the demands of the Brewery, and have been immensely supportive and actively interested in our progress. Our bank, were also supportive. After all, which bank wouldn’t want a Brewery on its books?”
Wanting to remain local in ethos, as well as geography, the company commissioned an architect from Steyning and building contractors from Pulborough, sought landscaping advice in Chichister and stayed close to Horsham for legal advice. All staff from the original site were relocated to the new premises. Christie explained: “Our staff came with us. We are delighted by this, and very grateful for their skills and loyalty. “Our move was blessed by a financial award from government backed funding. Their contribution helped enormously at a time when our then nominated contractors went bust, leaving us to reinstate the tendering process .We lost many valuable months, which knocked on to our late start. We moved equipment last May, lost a few weeks (planned!) of production and the office moved to the new brewery in September. “We still have much more to do. There is always going to be a lot more to do. It’s a brewery; there always has to another pint! Cheers to all and many, many, thanks!”
Horsham District Online Michelle Betts I moved to Horsham over 15 years ago and one of the reasons for moving here was the sense of community felt in the town when I visited the area. Fast forward to now and I believe that sense of community remains strong. You can see the community support from the articles in this paper. Even in this digital age you can see online too; from posts of thanks on the Horsham Facebook page to local people who have helped in difficult circumstances, to support for local events as people mark ‘interested’ on Facebook. Looking at the hot discussions locally on social media over the last few weeks, one theme has shone through and that’s one of community support. Horsham Football Club has been waiting with baited breath to establish if it has a future or not, pending an important decision regarding the
planning for it’s new ground. The Club has 5,722 people following the @HorshamFC twitter account and many of these followers were online for the decision last week. We were on tenterhooks watching the meeting unfold on Twitter as the Club live tweeted the decision in progress - refreshing the screen to see if there was a new update! Their hashtag #Home4HorshamFC would have been trending locally as the decision was made in favour of the Club and the celebratory and congratulatory tweets came flooding in. It was fantastic to see the online support for the Club from locals and other clubs. @HolbrookClub also received many tweets of support as the Holbrook Club plans were also approved. I was then further delighted to see a local event pop up in my Facebook feed from @ CratesLocal for the launch of a new Horsham gin from Cabin Pressure Spirits. There was a great deal of online excitement pre-launch with people tagging in friends to take to
the actual launch. The launch at Crates Local in the Carfax was a great success after all this online publicity. Local support for the new gin was fantastic and @CabinPresSpirit are almost at the 100th bottle to be sold mark as Horsham drinks them dry - there will be a waiting list soon for people wanting a bottle - it’s proving that popular! People in Horsham District love to support the town and we will see this in force over Easter weekend with Piazza Italia taking place. We are already seeing teaser videos by @slivertipfilms of what’s to come from @piazzaitalia11 and @HorshamTWS on Twitter. The excitement is starting to build online and there will plenty of photos and videos being posted by organisers and attendees over the event. If you’re joining in please use #piazzaitalia11 on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. My top accounts to follow on social media this month are: @ HorshamCowork, @VisitHorsham and of course, @TheDistrictPost and @ByJoveMedia!

Wisdom at The Capitol The Capitol Theatre is hosting an exhibition ‘A Lifetime in Showbusiness’ by Nicholas Wisdom, son of the late Sir Norman Wisdom. Norman Wisdom was an English Actor, Comedian and Singer/ Songwriter, best known for his comedy films featuring his hapless onscreen character that was often called Norman Pitkin, and his career spanned many decades with him starring in no less than 19 films. The collection is a nostalgic array of beautiful film and stage memorabilia from Norman’s career and is available to view in The Capitol Gallery until Sunday 23 April. Nicholas explained: “Whilst assembling my father’s memorabilia, I found myself making an astonishing admission, I didn’t realise just how big a star he was in the 1950s and ‘60s. To be filming at Pinewood Studios during the day, followed by two West End stage performances at night, meant a gruelling 18-hour day with only Sunday to recover. With seven films and six West End shows stretching throughout the 1950s, the pattern was set. “How appropriate that the exhibition will be at The Capitol, with my family living in West Chiltington for 22 years. Then of course, Jack Lane will be starring in Wisdom of a Fool, in effect bringing the exhibition to life. I very much look forward to meeting you before the show, to bring back some of those nostalgic memories. No doubt my father will be giving an approving nod.” Wisdom of a Fool is a critically

acclaimed one-man play about the early life of Norman Wisdom, returning to Horsham this weekend: Friday 31 March - Saturday 1 April (with a Saturday Matinee at 2.30pm). Jack Lane takes audiences behind Norman Wisdom’s wellknown character to reveal a tough lonely childhood. After joining the army, Norman discovers a passion for comedy and begins to perfect an act that would go on to shape his unique style. The world of post-war Music
Hall and Variety embraces Norman’s manic slapstick routine, catapulting him to stardom in the early 1950s. Success on the silver screen, including the hit song ‘Don’t Laugh at Me’, seals his fame. But fame comes at a price. “The best housewarming gift we could have asked for!”
Property Bridget Cordy As an art history teacher, Penny Huntsman is used to looking closely at the all important details so when she and her husband, Mark, visited the show house at Abingworth Meadows in Thakeham, they were immediately impressed. “I love old houses but these
new homes were so different from anything we’d seen before.” said Penny. “I think my husband was tired of all my renovations so when we decided to move out of Horsham, he suggested we look at new homes. I already knew the area around Thakeham, the walks and the village pub. For me it’s about the location, getting away from it all in the countryside, and the promise of a quality build.”
Mark and Penny were the first to move in at Abingworth Meadows with their son William, 11, and the family’s little Welsh terrier, Teddy. Will has two older siblings, Hannah and Laurie, both of whom are away at university but have been very impressed with their new country residence. They chose one of the elegant, detached homes facing directly on to the new cricket green which also has the added benefit of a south west facing garden. “It’s been a bit of a revelation moving here,” admitted Penny. “The aspect is fantastic and the house is very light, especially the open plan kitchen which has worked well for us - when the sun’s out, it’s lovely.” The Huntsmans are planning to keep their separate lounge more formal, decorated with the timeless style of William Morris to bring together traditional and modern interior design. The helpful service they received from Oakford Homes was equally impressive throughout the buying process from the site sales team to the directors. Penny singled out Val Austen for a special mention. Val has worked with Oakford Homes for eight years and takes care of customers during the
handover and completion of their property, helping them to settle in quickly. “Val is lovely, she’s the best housewarming gift we could have asked for!” said Penny. “She was here to welcome us on moving day and had even put the heating on to keep the house warm to receive us. Her thoughtfulness during that day really meant a lot to me, she’s a very warm-hearted lady.” Oakford Homes take a great deal of time and care over their customer service as well as the quality of their homes at Abingworth Meadows, where the show home is open daily from 10am to 5pm (01798 879140), email abingworth@oakfordhomes.co.uk. Current prices for the detached family houses range from £715,000. Abingworth Meadows has proven the ideal move for the Huntsmans who are now looking forward to their first summer in their new home. “These homes are really quite special,” said Penny. “For a new development, the low density and the arrangement of homes around the cricket pitch seems quintessentially English. It’s as close to the village idyll as we can get.”
Three cheers for Yolanda – ‘dedicated’ teacher wins sparkling award for her support of Sussex pupils with autism A teacher, who supports youngsters from across Sussex with autism, has been recognised for her dedicated work after being handed a Roger Coupe Star Award. Yolanda de la Fuente, a teacher at specialist school Jigsaw, was put forward for the title of star teacher by her colleagues and was thrilled to win after topping a public vote. Nominated for her willing-
ness to volunteer “for anything” and help out at the drop of a hat, Yolanda regularly stays late to help get work done and has a great way with pupils. Those who voted for her also praised her “unfailing dedication” and described her as a “kind teacher”, “team player” and simply “the best”. The 41-year-old has been working as a Year 1 teacher at the independent school, which supports
children aged 4 - 19 with autism, for 18 months. She was delighted to take the star teacher title and win a hamper from luxury department store Fortnum and Mason. She was presented with her tasty prize by Edward Norman and James Britton, partners at Roger Coupe, at their office in Cranleigh High Street. Edward said: “Our Star Awards aim to recognise and celebrate all those who go above and beyond for their communities. Teachers do an extremely important job helping to mould, motivate and educate the next generation so we felt they deserved their time in the spotlight. “It was lovely to read the nominations for all our three finalists, which spoke of their enthusiasm, professionalism and dedication. After a close vote we were delighted to hand the prize to Yolanda. “Thank you to everyone who nominated and voted.” Yolanda, who worked as a teaching assistant at a special educational needs school in Worthing, before joining Jigsaw, said she was “overwhelmed” to be named star teacher. “This is the first time something like this has happened to me, I’m
really happy,” she added. “Working with the pupils at Jigsaw is wonderful; to be with them, to understand and play with them and to work with them – that’s the world for us. It’s all about the pupils and how we can help them to make their way in society.” Alongside her teaching, Yolanda is studying for a masters in Applied Behaviour Analysis from Nicholls State University in Louisiana, which has a partnership with Dunsfold-based Jigsaw. The Star Awards are continuing throughout 2017 and Roger Coupe staff are now on the lookout for star gardens and the green-fingered fans who keep them looking lovely. Nominees can include horticulture experts who tend to community green spaces, members of In Bloom groups and individuals with glorious gardens that they open to the public. To make a nomination email starawards@pmwcom.co.uk with a short description of your nominee, why they deserve to win, their contact details and where they live. Please also include your own contact details. Nominations can be made until midnight on 21 April.

Farlington’s Issy becomes National Champion Biathlon Dave Smith - Sports Editor Farlington School pupil Issy Hayes has become the National Champion after competing at the British Schools’ Modern Biathlon Championships at Crystal Palace; The modern biathlon is an event made up of a swim and a run. Issy made it to the finals after qualifying last year from several thousand competitors spread throughout Britain. 12 year old Issy was ranked in the top ten going into the event,
but not in the top three, so to gain a medal of any type was going to take a great effort and for her to hit top form. Her first event was the swim where she put in a great performance by recording a personal best time that set her up well for the run. With a seeded system in place, Issy needed to improve her personal best in the run by a huge margin. The strong wind in the stadium made the 1600m even more testing but Issy set off quickly, leading from the start. As the race progressed Issy stayed out in front with her only challenge coming from the cur-
Schools Biathlon Champion Izzy Hayes
rent number one ranked athlete. Issy pushed hard and crossed the line seven seconds ahead of her challenger, winning her the title of the U13 National Biathlon Champion. Sara Whittaker, Farlington’s Director of PE and Games, said, “Issy is a fantastic athlete with a great attitude and lots of potential. To succeed in this sport demonstrates her all-round ability. We are very proud of her at Farlington. As a Sport and Drama Scholar, she is a great role model to the other students. I’m sure she will build on this success.”

Calling all umpires!
More umpires are needed in Sussex Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Good news - cricket in Sussex is booming, creating, though, a demand for all important and much valued umpires. The Sussex Cricket Founda-
tion (SCF), the charitable arm for Sussex cricket, has just celebrated its first birthday, the successful opening year having seen 40,000 cricketers playing for 245 cricket clubs throughout the county, giving opportunities for some 16,000 children to participate in the Foundation’s coaching, playing and workshop programmes. SCF Chair David Bowden says: “Our aims are to increase participation, inspire education – through the new SCF Learning Centre at Sussex’s Hove HQ - and improve health throughout Sussex – whether that’s playing, watching or simply being inspired by cricket.” Horsham Cricket Club’s David Horsman, a key figure in local Mirfield and Gullick knockout cups administration, tells the District Post: “It’s really great that cricket is so popular in the county but that means that we need a goodly number of officials, especially umpires. At HCC we have five panel umpires, but more are needed in the district, especially to officiate in the feeder leagues, where sometimes players have to umpire, which we don’t like to see.” Sussex Cricket League Secretary Terry Burstow explains: “In
Sussex we’ve got 280 registered ECB umpires, through the Association of Cricket Umpires, out of 8,500 in the UK. But, from our 280 we’ve 70 potentially active umpires, although only 65 actually stood in matches last season. We need at least 55 umpires a week but holidays and non-availability take their toll and people move away, so we’re always looking to recruit new umpires, especially those with experience who have perhaps moved into the county. It’s a satisfying role and panel umpires get paid for their services and receive a mileage allowance - after a playing career umpiring is a way of continuing to enjoy cricket, using experience and knowledge built up through the years. And, for those wishing to start umpiring for the first time, we run courses at Horsham, Hove and Arundel, usually sponsored by the League or clubs.” Revered senior umpire Terry would love to hear from anyone interested in joining the Sussex umpiring panel to officiate on some of the most beautiful grounds in the country – terryburstow@ntlworld.com – 01903 261442.
Hawks fight valiantly in cup final rematch Hawks (in blue) and Cagers players
Crawley Cagers U14 75 – 57 Horsham Hawks U14 Youth Basketball Dave Smith - Sports Editor Reigning Sussex Champions Horsham Hawks faced a massive challenge in a rematch of last season’s cup final against current league leaders, the Crawley Cagers. Horsham opened the game with scores from Harry Rose, Josh Tavolieri and a three pointer from Josh Lea-Clayton putting them ahead 7-2. Crawley responded from Abdu Gaye, Tony Assogba and Sweady Kissala to take their first lead 9-7. Four
more points from Lea-Clayton followed by a further six from Tavolieri kept the Hawks 17-15 ahead before Crawley’s Kissala levelled the game as the first quarter came to a close. A powerful drive from Horsham’s Charlotte Willcox to begin the second quarter and strong defence from Oliver Brooker ensured the Hawks regained the lead once more. Crawley responded through Gaye, Assogba and Matthew Aziamale who successfully converted as Crawley edged ahead 31-25. Accurate outside shooting from Horsham including three pointers from LeaClayton and Tavolieri and a well taken score from Fin Bennett to
end the half at 43-37 to Crawley. In the third quarter Crawley continued to use their size advantage close to the basket as Gaye, Assogba, Aziamale and Martin Kibuuka added to their totals. A resilient Hawk’s team however, continued to fight valiantly with Lea-Clayton, Tavolieri and Bennett making tough shots to keep the contest alive. The third quarter ended 58-47 to Crawley. In the fourth quarter the size and depth of the Cager’s side proved decisive as a short-handed and tired Hawk’s team began to make defensive errors. Despite the best efforts of Tavolieri, Lea-Clayton and Anaya Wakefield on offence Crawley pulled away to secure a 75-57 win and avenge last year’s cup final defeat by Horsham. Hawks Head Coach David Clayton commented, “Crawley is a fantastic team featuring twelve national league players. We were slightly short-handed today and started to run out of gas in the fourth quarter while the Cagers did an excellent job of rotating their bench to keep us under constant pressure. Given the circumstances I am very proud of the way we kept fighting to the end.”

Nuthurst seal the Netball League title Nuthurst’s winning team
Junior Netball St Andrew’s School, Nuthurst, are the Horsham District Netball League Division A winners after sealing their fifth straight Phase 2 win in the last meeting at Collyer’s College. Nuthurst were hot favourites for the title, especially as their final game was against lowly Greenway A. The Greens gave a good account of themselves but ultimately Nuthurst were not going to be denied and won 5-2. Eleanor Jones was the warhorse at the centre of the Nut-
hurst team, taking the knocks but coming out of them still standing whilst Theo Ramage was irrepressible with his outstanding shooting in attack and non-stop pressurizing when in defence. The Nuthurst team, coached by Michelle Jones, consists of; Theo Ramage, Elena Jones, Jack Hunt, Ben Rymarz, Dannielle Sheehan and Phoebe Penston. Nuthurst’s 100% record gave them 25 points, ahead of second placed Southwater A, on 22 points, and Holbrook third with 19 points.
Depleted Horsham overcome their Henley demons South League Premier Division 1 Henley Men 1 - 1 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Henley has not been a happy hunting ground for Horsham. So, last Saturday’s draw in the final league game of the season was an achievement, especially as the team, already sure of survival, had donated players to boost the struggling seconds, with first team replacements stepping up from the colts. Horsham travelled with a small squad and started late after severe traffic hold ups en route, but came out vigorously, disconcerting Henley. In the tenth minute John Burroughs broke through, rewarded with a short corner, duly despatched by Matt Hough. Horsham then had real opportunities, only for Hough to hit the post and a Burroughs’ chance to go begging, but led 1-0 at the turn. Further probabilities evaporated, Hough again peppering the woodwork and although Captain Andy Isaacs gave another outstanding display in goal, an errant back pass allowed Henley to share the points. At their highest ever level, Horsham began the season brightly but subsequently fell back after
New season Grays and Kookaburra hockey in stock. Canterbury & Gilbert rugby boots and protective gear in stock. Updating of annual cups and awards engraved on-site
seven straight losses. The Christmas break, though, came at the right time with a run of better results on resumption, until another wobble suggested relegation, Horsham Team Manager Al Campbell telling the District Post: “We learned a heck of a lot this season! After being promoted we were determined to stay up and set ourselves a 30 point target. We didn’t quite hit that, ending ninth, seven points above Henley, but the way we bounced back in the run in was highly creditable - hats off to a great team effort when the chips were down. Our thoughts are already on next season, we’ll be losing players, including the retirement of stalwarts Dom Cohen and Cirdec Atkinson, but we’ll re-group and strengthen up. We played well against the top teams, which might encourage someone looking to move clubs to join us.” Despite being beaten by Horsham home and away, Havant are promoted as champions. Banbury and Guildford go down and Henley are currently awaiting confirmation that they will stay in the league (the probable outcome). Horsham still have a big game to play – on April 23 they are looking to retain the Sussex Cup when they travel to take on Worthing.

Boro stay top – four points clear with two to play Pulborough have the title in their sights
London 3 South East Pulborough 54 - 26 Folkestone Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter With promotion and the league title at stake, Pulborough strengthened their grip on the table, showing no sign of nerves as they despatched fourthplaced Folkestone with relative ease.

In a scything gale howling across from the Southdown Gliding Club Boro soon made their intentions clear with early attacks rewarded by Guy Baxter driving in under the posts, Frazer OliphantHope converting before Will Truscott also got over the line. Leading 12-0 after seven minutes and with seemingly permanent possession, Boro egged on by a large vociferous crowd, many fortified from the Vice Presidents’ lunch, looked unassailable – but
Folkestone did get through and then kicked over into the wind. However a Boro penalty soon increased their lead and, after two disallowed tries amid a spectacular display by a pair of buzzards wheeling over the ground, Truscott’s fly kick was gathered by Will Scrase for another try. Boro led 27- 7 at the break, courtesy of another Scrase try, Frazer’s boot slotting home the kick. Scrase completed his hat trick immediately after the interval and then Nick Haynes posted a further five points. Folkestone responded with an intercept try but, although they added 14 more points, that proved to be a minor inconvenience as Truscott notched up three more tries, one maximised by George Lee to give Boro a 54-26 win against a strong Folkestone side against whom they came unstuck in Kent in November. Boro President Alex Steele told the District Post: “We worked really hard, but I never thought we’d put 54 points past Folkestone!” Head Coach Clayton Saunders added: “We showed our strike power all over the pitch and are on the edge of promotion, but our Captain, Simon Burfiend, and I are determined to see Boro finish as league champions, too!” Tomorrow (Saturday) Boro travel to Bromley to play struggling tenth-placed Park House, whom they beat at 28-15 at Freelands in December.
Wayward finishing results in a defeat for YM SCFL Premier Division Newhaven 1 – 0 Horsham YMCA Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor Not for the first time this season Horsham YMCA manager Peter Buckland was forced into making late changes to his intended starting eleven. Also, in a match between two sides playing out the rest of the season in mid-table neutrality, some wayward finishing cost his team points. With a strong blustery wind whipping across Newhaven’s Trafalgar Ground and without any urgent need for either team to pick up league points, this match was no classic and will not live long in the memory. The opening 45 minutes saw both ‘keepers underworked with the only action for YM coming from Phil Johnson and Dave Brown who both were guilty of wildly missing the target on a number of occasions without bothering home stopper Jake Buss
and similarly, YM ‘keeper Mark Fox had a trouble free time. YM came out for the second half looking the more determined but again wayward shooting gave Buss a watching role as efforts on his goal all flew past him high and wide of the target. The inability to score seemed to dishearten YM and Newhaven went on to dominate much of the remaining half hour in which they were rewarded by the only goal of the game. Amid sustained Newhaven pressure Fox could only parry Ian Robinson’s goal bound shot and Ryan Walton was quickest to react in a busy penalty area to find the back of the YM net. Peter Buckland was naturally disappointed with the result and his teams’ failure to make more of the opportunities that came their way. As can be expected of Buckland he will be demanding that his team finish the season off on a high and certainly will be doing all he can to prevent his players coasting to the seasons end.
Peter Buckland will push for a strong finish to season

Over the shorter 10K distance at Christ Hospital School in the local Mel’s Milers run, Simon Perkins stormed home 4th out of a field of 348 in 37.31 with Pete O’Connell 38.19, Lucinda Potten 42.50, Johanna Terry 44.18, Laurence Carpenter 44.24, Phil Liberman

Finally, Keith Valentine finished a very creditable 16th in 73.36 at the Henfield 9.
The Bears season has been disrupted in recent weeks with long term injuries to several key players and their cause was not helped with the loss of midfielders Scott Weller (work), Dan Sandell and Shaun Findlay (suspended). On the plus side they welcomed back leading scorer Jake Holmes who has been out injured for the last 4 weeks. The Heath striker made his presence felt immediately by scoring in the opening minute after Ollie Moore had charged down Worthing ‘keeper Nathan Stroomberg’s clearance and the ball fell to Holmes who tapped it into the unguarded net. The visitors equalised with their first purposeful attack on 7 minutes when a good move down the left flank ended with the ball being cut back from the goal-line into the path of Owen Callaghan who hit a side footed shot into the bottom corner. Callaghan continued to look the most dangerous player for the visitor’s, having an effort blocked and firing straight
at Michael Chester. For Heath, Ollie Moore blasted a right foot effort high and wide and Tim Martin had a snapshot which was blocked on the line by Stromberg, but it remained 1-1 at the break. There was very little to shout about in the second period, both sides struggled with the conditions and neither keeper was troubled much. The balance of play swung in United’s favour in the 75th minute when Martin was shown a straight red card by the referee for a late challenge. Minutes later the visitors won a corner on the right which Heath failed to clear and substitute Paul Elliott rose above everyone to power a header past Chester, winning the match for his team. Heath Assistant Manager Steve Whiting said, I have never known a time when we’ve had so many players out, we had three players aged 18 or under in the squad today, it’s great experience for them but we could do with a few more senior players around to help them through the game. We should have a few players back next week and possibly a new signing ahead of our trip to Wick but the way our luck is at the moment we’ll probably lose one or two others.”

QUOTE OF THE WEEK A weekend where pretty much everything went wrong
Jolyon Palmer
Feel good factor lifts Hornets to victory Horsham finish seventh at the end of tough season Tony Nwachukwu unleashes an unstoppable shot for 2-0
Photo by John Lines Ryman League Division 1 South Horsham 2 – 0 Tooting & Mitcham Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor Tooting & Mitcham turned up at Gorings Mead nine points clear at the top of the Ryman South table and with 14 straight victories behind them, making them firm favourites to be crowned champions come the end of April. If however they thought Horsham, with nothing to play for, would be easy pickings then they were very wrong as the feel good effect Tuesday’s new ground approval gave the Hornets a massive lift. Before a ball was kicked a bumper crowd of 481 created a celebratory mood that Dom Di Paola’s
team carried onto the pitch for a memorable win in what has been a memorable week for Horsham FC. Both sides started at a frenetic pace with most of the high tempo play being in the midfield as neither team could make things happen in the final third. Alfie Rogers did force Tooting ‘keeper Kyle Merson into a save and at the other end Josh Pelling was alert to deal with Daniel Clements’ effort. Despite former Hornets favourite Billy Dunn looking lively and a number of half efforts from the Horsham front line a midfield stalemate dominated the half and it was therefore no surprise when at the referee’s half time whistle the match was goalless. The second half started much the same as the first had ended
and it wasn’t until the introduction of Tony Nwachukwu that things changed. Ashley Jones immediately had the best effort of the match at that point when he lobbed past Merson only for Sol PattersonBohner to produce a superb goal line headed clearance. However the next attack resulted in a Horsham corner and subsequently a goal. From the corner the visiting defence only half cleared the ball to Jordan Clark who back-healed to Charlie Farmer who hit a low shot into the bottom corner. Tooting are not top of the division for nothing and they immediately stepped up a gear. After controlling the ball well, Ed Dines fired a low cross shot that beat Pelling before rattling the far post and then substitute Sandy Cunningham missed a sitter when he allowed his shot to be blocked after having time and space to score; from the loose ball Clements then blasted his shot yards wide. Taking full advantage of escaping the equaliser Horsham went straight up the other end and scored their second. Substitute Nwachukwu stole the ball from a melee of players and although having passing options open to him he hit a vicious drive from 25 yards out that left Merson no chance as it flew past him into the net. With only minutes remaining that goal secured the result and capped a great few days for all connected with the club. Horsham, now 14th in the table with 55 points, travel to Chipstead, 20th with 37 points, tomorrow (Saturday April 1).
Horsham punished by late OC burst
Horsham were beaten by late Colfeian tries London 2 South East Horsham 24 - 50 Old Colfeians Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Score lines can be deceptive, as proved to be the case for Horsham
last Saturday when they kept in touch with Old Colfeians throughout the game before fading during the visitors’ late flourish. A Will Bell penalty opened the scoring for Horsham in the seventh minute, quickly followed by a Josh Steggles try, Bell converting. Michael Tredgett added another five points late in the first half,
Bell again adding the extras for Horsham to trail narrowly at the break. Half way through the second half Richard Tredgett got across the line, Bell kicking over, only for Old Colfeians to run amok to take the game by an unreasonably wide margin. Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker told the District Post: “We played the more attractive rugby and stayed within six points of Old Colfs until the last few minutes, when lapses in concentration in the run in gifted them three tries at the death – that can happen when you have young, inexperienced players, but they are talented and will come good. We suffered in the set pieces because their pack was stronger than ours. Old Colfs are an impressive side - they’re the current runners up – and it was interesting talking to them after the game because not so long ago they were in the same situation as us after also losing seasoned players and having to replace them with up and comings.” In their penultimate league game of the season, tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham, still sixth, have a long coach trip to east Kent to play ninth in the table Deal & Betteshanger, whom they beat 29-12 at home in December.
South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division 1 Surbiton Ladies 2s 5 - 1 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter In November Horsham Ladies pulled off a major coup, walloping league runners up Surbiton 4-1 at Broadbridge Heath. But, in Horsham’s final league game revenge was sweet for the Surreyites. Yet, taken overall, Horsham can be pleased with their season considering that an outbreak of impending motherhood robbed them of several regular players. A core of experienced seniors gallantly stayed on, boosted by the introduction of some excellent young players who found themselves pitted against older and wiser opponents. After a sticky start to the campaign the team gelled together well, ran and ran and generally gave a good account of themselves. In this tough league there are very few
gimmies, so to finish seventh was no disgrace. The girls who stepped up learned much and will further develop into more than useful players. In the Surbiton game Horsham scored first when Alex Malzer volleyed home a rebound from Elle Blakesley’s strike before the hosts equalised, leaving the score one apiece at the break. The second half undoubtedly belonged to Surbiton, who ran out convincing 5-1 winners, Elle Blakesley telling the District Post: “We played well in patches but Surbiton had a strong squad and were the worthy winners. They were very skilful and quick!” Barnes won the league and Woking were bottom after winning just one of their 18 matches. Horsham Ladies’ season is not quite done – they have a big match tomorrow, Saturday, when they appear in another Sussex Cup Final - travelling to take on Lewes.
Disappointing start for Palmer in F1 season opener Formula 1 Dave Smith - Sports Editor After suffering car problems in practice and qualifying, and then again during the race, Jolyon Palmer had a disappointing start to the new F1 season at the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne, Australia. Palmer posted his annoyance on social media, saying, ‘A weekend where pretty much everything went wrong’. Palmer, starting from 19th on the grid made a strong start, climbing four positions on the first lap. After holding his ground for the next 14 laps he suffered an intermittent brake issue which led to his retirement from the race on lap 15. Palmer’s new teammate, Nico Hülkenberg, fared better finishing just outside the points in eleventh place. Hülkenberg however
Palmer (at rear) before retiring
confirmed the task ahead for his Renault Team by saying “The conclusion from my first race with the team is that we are firmly in the midfield and we’re looking forward to continuing to improve.” Palmer summed up his weekend by saying, “My race was going well. I made places at the start despite being on the hardest tyre, my pace was pretty reasonable and I could see Nico and Esteban ahead of me. Unfortunately, my brakes stuck on at turn 14. We hoped it was just a glitch, but it happened again so we had no alternative other than to retire. It’s not been the start I wanted to my season, so we’ll put it down to experience and look forward to China.” Renault do not have long to resolve their reliability issues as the next race is on Sunday April 9 in Shanghai, China.
