HOCKEY The Big Green (1-3-0, 1-2-0 ECAC) started off its weekend with a 1-0 victory against Quinnipiac University at High Point Solutions Arena this past Friday night. Alyssa Baker ’19 scored the lone goal of the game on the power play 14:52 into the first period on an assist by Cecilia Lopez ’20 and Hailey Noronha ’18. Christine Honor ’19 made a career-high 61 saves in what was her first career shutout, breaking the previous NCAA record for the most saves in a shutout. The Big Green only took 16 shots to the Bobcats’ 61. Quinnipiac pulled its goaltender for the last two minutes of play but could not tie up the game.

At Hobey Baker Rink on Saturday, Dartmouth fell 8-1 to Princeton University. The Tigers opened scoring in the first period and found the back of the net three times before the horn sounded. After 20 minutes of play, Princeton led Dartmouth 15-6 in shots. The Tigers struck again nine minutes into the second, and Honor was pulled having allowed five goals on 14 shots.

Shannon Ropp ’19 took her place in the net. With two Princeton players in the box for slashing and hooking, Christina Rombaut ’20 capitalized on the opportunity to score her first goal of the season with less than a minute remaining in the second period. Caroline Shaunessy ’19 and Noronha assisted on Dartmouth’s lone goal of the game. Following the

goal, the Tigers continued to run away with the game, scoring three more times in the third period to solidify their win. Ropp made 22 saves and allowed three goals.

The men’s hockey team opened its season this weekend with a 5-3 loss to the College of the Holy Cross at the Hart Center in Worcester, Massachusetts on Friday. The Crusaders opened scoring four minutes into the first period with a power-play goal and struck on the man-advantage again at the 14:14 mark. Holy Cross went up 3-0 with 1:25 remaining in the first period, but Kevan Kilistoff ’19 won the ensuing center-ice face-off and fed winger Daniel Warpecha ’20, who made it 3-1. Only 39 seconds into the second period, Ryan Blankemeier ’20 brought Dartmouth within a goal, assisted

by Corey Kalk ’18 and Brendan Less ’21. Less than three minutes later, Kilistoff tied it up on the power play thanks to an assist from Cameron Roth ’19 and Joey Matthews ’21. But the Crusaders added a fourth goal later in the period and scored the only goal of the final period to take the win. Devin Buffalo ’18 recorded 24 saves in the loss while Less and Matthews earned their first career points. On Sunday, the men faced No. 3 Harvard University, losing 5-0 at the Bright-Landry Center.

FIELD HOCKEY Field hockey fell 6-2 to No. 16 Harvard University away at Berylson Field in Cambridge, Massachusetts on Saturday. Gemma Bautista ’19 provided the offense for the Big Green, scoring in the 10th and 24th minutes to give the Big Green an early 2-0 lead. The Crimson put

one on the board before halftime, but the Big Green maintained the lead. The second half was a different story, as the Crimson put up five unanswered goals.

The Big Green was outshot 35-4, while goalie Hailey Valerio ’19 made 13 saves in the loss.

WOMEN’s GOLF

Equestrian picked up a win on Saturday at the University of New Hampshire to extend its lead in Region 1, Zone 2. The Big Green swept open fences, with Olivia Champ ’19, Lilly Higgins ’20 and Sophie Lenihan ’20 taking the top three spots, respectively. Nathalie Ferneau ’18 earned a thirdplace ribbon in novice fences. Claire Bick ’18 and Lenihan both garnered second-place ribbons in open flat, while Sarah Cohen ’18 and Elle MacAlpine

Volleyball fell to two Ivy League opponents this weekend, dropping its record to 7-12 overall and 3-7 in Ivy League play. On Friday, Dartmouth traveled to Ithaca, New York to take on Cornell University, who swept the Big Green (25-15, 25-19, 25-12). Both teams started the first set evenly until the Big Red pulled ahead by three to bring the score to 13-9. Cornell stretched its lead further to 21-12. After the Big Green won three consecutive points to narrow the gap to 21-15, Cornell scored four straight points to win the set. The second set mirrored the first with the score rising to 9-9 and Cornell opening up a 14-11 run before Mallen Bischoff ’21 got a kill to stop the Big Red run.

However, Cornell managed to regain strength to take the second set. In the third set, Cornell took an early 9-3 lead. A Dartmouth timeout did not stop Cornell’s momentum as the Big Red rallied to a 17-6 score. Points by Corinne Cox ’20 and Carly Tower ’20 slowed the Big Red but only forestalled Cornell’s 25-12 win. Elise Petit ’21 recorded 21 total attacks, and Tori Dozier ’20 had nine assists in the loss.

Poor weather cut play a day short at the Atlanta Athletic Club Highlands Ladies Fall Intercollegiate Invitational hosted in Atlanta, Georgia. The Big Green finished 13th at 79-over 655 on the par-72 course in its final tournament of the fall season.

Co-captain Catharine Roddy ’19 tied for 32nd place with 13-over 157 to lead the Big Green. Roddy improved five strokes between rounds one and two, carding a birdie on the second day for a tied-for team best 76 (+4) on the day. Jessica Kittleberger ’18 bounced back from a shaky start to match Roddy’s performance in

’18 earned second place in intermediate and novice flat, respectively. Mahalia Dalmage ’21 and Sophie Kocher ’21 won novice flat and beginning walk-trotcanter, respectively. Kocher’s win advanced her into advanced walk-trot-canter. Alex Chen ’19 added the final win for the Big Green with her first-place finish in walk-trot.

Results from the team’s competition against ColbySawyer College were not available as of press time.

Dartmouth looked to redeem itself against Columbia University on Saturday but lost 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-17). The first set came down to the wire, as the score stayed within three points until Dartmouth clinched a 22-15 lead with the help of several key kills by Bischoff. The Lions began to rally, tying the game at 23-23. Dartmouth called a timeout before winning the first set. The second set remained close until Columbia took a 15-10 lead. Bischoff made three kills to bring the score to 17-13, but Dartmouth could not continue its comeback and lost 25-18. Columbia broke away at the beginning of the third set and took a 5-1 lead. Although Dartmouth tied the game at 9-9 and briefly took a 16-14 lead, the Lions pulled ahead 21-17, eventually winning the third set. Columbia again took a 5-1 lead in the fourth set. Kills by Petit and Tower brought the score to 6-5, but Columbia gradually pulled away and won 25-17. Bischoff had a career-high 18 kills and 13 digs, while Dozier had 19 digs and 36 assists. The Big Green will be back on the court this weekend when it plays Brown University and Yale University.

CROSS COUNTRY

FOOTBALL The Dartmouth football team suffered a nailbiting loss against Harvard University 25-22. Down 11 points midway through the fourth quarter, quarterback Jack Heneghan ’18 was thwarted in his attempt to complete the comeback after Harvard’s Tanner Lee intercepted his pass with 1:14 to spare.

The Big Green scored early in the first half with 10:24 remaining on the clock when running back Ryder Stone ’18 made a 10-yard run into the endzone following an 80-yard drive. Dartmouth held the lead into the second half with another touchdown after Heneghan connected with wide receiver Hunter Hagdorn ’20 with 2:40 remaining to put the Big Green up 14-0. Harvard responded with a touchdown by tight end Ryan Antonellis with less than a minute to go. After the Crimson missed its field goal attempt, the Big Green held a 14-6 lead moving into the third quarter.

Trying to close the lead, the Crimson held the Big Green scoreless throughout the start of the second half before a successful 76-yard drive to close the gap to 14-12.

With momentum on its side, Harvard put up two consecutive touchdowns to take a 25-14 lead with just over seven minutes remaining. Scrambling to get back in the game, Heneghan drove the ball 80 yards before a six-yard dash into the endzone.

Taking a chance on the two-point conversion, the Big Green successfully converted on a pass to wide receiver Dylan Mellor ’19, leaving Dartmouth down by only a field goal.

Despite Dartmouth driving the ball from its 20 to the Harvard’s six-yard line, Lee’s interception gave Harvard its 14th straight win over the Big Green. The Big Green return home to play Cornell University next weekend.

RUGBY

Women’s cross country had a strong showing at the 2017 Ivy League Heptagonal Championship this past Friday, with several runners earning All-Ivy honors. The Big Green finished second overall with 73 points, just seven points behind winner Columbia University.

Olivia Lantz ’19 led the way for the Big Green, advancing 14 places in the second half of the race to a fifth-place finish with a time of 21:17.0, earning her First Team All-Ivy honors.

Just behind Lantz were Julia Stevenson ’20 (21:28.6) and Ella Ketchum ’21 (21:32.5), finishing 11th and 13th. By finishing as top competitors both Stevenson and Ketchum earned the distinction of Second Team All-Ivy honors.

The rugby team won its third consecutive Ivy League Rugby Championship on Saturday.

No. 2 Big Green defeated No. 4 Harvard University 22-8 in a decisive victory to claim its third consecutive Ivy League Championship.

Although the Crimson attempted to maintain tight possession of the ball throughout the first half, Dartmouth quickly took the lead just after the sixminute mark when captain Frankie Sands ’18 outran defenders after intercepting a pass from Harvard. The Big Green built on its lead after the 24-minute mark when a Harvard penalty allowed Idia Ihensekhien ’21 to assist Becca Jane Rosko ’20 in the team’s second try.

defenders after the 34th minute before Kat Ramage ’19 added a conversion. Ramage contributed the final points for the Big Green at the end of the first half after a try off an assist by classmate Allison Tong ’20.

Harvard got on the board at the end of the first half after a Dartmouth penalty provided them the opportunity to score. Despite an aggressive second half with multiple attempts at tries, neither the Big Green nor the Crimson were able to score until Harvard scored its only try in the final minute.

The Big Green will prepare for the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association Varsity Championships on Nov. 11.

ROWING Both men’s and women’s rowing teams traveled to New Jersey to compete at the Princeton Chase on Sunday. Men’s heavyweight raced four boats in the Varsity 8+ final, with the varsity 8A posting the team’s top finish in second out of 38, completing the 3-mile race in 12:36.791, behind host Princeton University (12:32.476). The varsity 8C boat finished in 16th-place (13:13.772), the 8B finished 19th (13:16.388) and the 8D finished 27th in 13:29.918. The heavyweights also had four teams compete in the Varsity 4+ final, with the Big Green’s A squad finishing ninth in 14:25.177.

Dartmouth was also represented in the Freshman 8+, finishing second in 12:53.31.

Men’s lightweight raced three in the Varsity Lightweight 8+ final, four in the Lightweight 4+

final and one in the Freshman 8+ final. The varsity 8A finished 11th in 13:16.688, with the 8B (17th, 13:33.581) and 8C (22nd, 14:01.943) not far behind.

The top team in the fours was the A boat in 13th place (15:00.519). The freshmen finished eighth in 13:34.825, more than 40 seconds behind the heavyweight’s freshman boat also in the same race.

The women’s freshmen crew won the Novice 8+ race in 14:49.86. The A crew placed sixth in the Varsity 8+ final, finishing in 14:28.95, with the B (18th, 15:00.48), C (30th, 15:27.44) and D boats (45th, 16:02.99) also competing. The women also had four crews compete in the Varsity 4+ final, with the A boat finishing first for the team and sixth overall in 16:16.47.

Green were Leigh Moffett ’18 (19th, 21:45.8) and Bridget O’Neill ’18 (25th, 21:56.7).

Men’s cross country ran what head coach Barry Harwick ’77 referred to as its “best race of the season” at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships, finishing fifth overall with 138 points.

Will Shafer ’18 led the Big Green over the 5-mile course at Van Cortlandt Park, finishing 19th in 25:34.8. Shafer had a strong finish, advancing from 37th place at halfway through the race to finish.

The remaining four scoring runners finished within 12 seconds of each other. Pat Gregory ’18 finished 28th in 25:48.0, with Patrick O’Brien ’21 (30th in 25:51.9) and Ben Szuhaj ’19 (32nd in 25:55.3) close behind. Sean Laverty ’20 rounded out the scoring runners for the Big Green, finishing 36th in 26:00.1.

SAILING

The sailing team spent the weekend in the Boston area at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Professor Schell Trophy, Harvard University’s Victorian Urn Trophy and Tufts University’s Nickerson Trophy.

At the Professor Schell Trophy, MIT looked comfortable on its home turf, winning the regatta by more than 60 points. Dartmouth, powered by a strong performance from Christopher Williford ’19 and Rebecca McElvain ’19 in division A, finished in fifth.

Duncan Williford ’18 and Paige Clarke ’20 raced the first 12 races in division B, and Jack McGraw ’20 and Alyssa Berger ’19 raced the final six.

At Harvard, Emma White ’19 and Peninah Benjamin ’20, sailing in division A, finished in the top half in nine races over the weekend. Audrey Giblin ’20 and Sophia Diserio ’18 raced in division B. The Big Green ended the weekend in fourth place, 101 points back of winners Yale University.

A south-southwest breeze let the teams race 10 races on the Upper Mystic at the Nickerson Trophy.

Timothy Greenhouse ’21 and Sarah Chong ’21 were seventh out of 18 competing teams in division A, and Max Clapp ’21, Michael Tellini ’21 and Eloise Burn ’21 sailed to fifth place in division B.

SOCCER No. 20 men’s soccer (10-3-1 overall, 4-0-1 Ivy) and the women’s soccer team (6-10 overall, 0-6 Ivy) faced Harvard University. The men maintained tight possession of the ball, allowing Harvard just two shots and taking 30 shots of their own, the highest shot total for Dartmouth in the past four seasons. Harvard goalkeeper Kyle Parks matched Dartmouth through 89 minutes of play, making 11 saves. But Dartmouth swept away his clean sheet in the final minute when Justin Donawa ’19 sent a ball into the box. Donawa was thwarted by a Harvard defender, but the ball squirted out to co-captain Matt Danilack ’18 who bicycle-kicked it into the net. Both teams played a tight defensive match which finished with three yellow cards and a red card that booted Paolo Belloni-Urso from the game only after 34 minutes.

The win against Harvard leaves the men tied on top of the Ivy League standings, with Columbia University.

Despite a fierce 102 minutes of play,

the Dartmouth women’s soccer team lost in double overtime to Harvard 2-1 on Saturday.

The Crimson set the pace early in the first half, scoring after the 19-minute mark when Harvard’s Murphy Agnew beat three Big Green defenders to score a left-footed shot.

The game remained scoreless into the second half until the 58th minute, when Bonnie Shea ’21 headed the ball to the left side of the net off a corner kick from Brittany Champagne ’18.

While Dartmouth played a tough offensive game, outshooting Harvard 23-11, neither team was unable to score, sending the game into double overtime.

In the 102nd minute, Agnew put her second goal of the day into the top corner of the net from 20 yards out to hand the Big Green a tough defeat.

The loss moved Dartmouth to 0-6-0 in the conference as it moves into its final home game against Cornell University this weekend.

All Decked Out: Big Green athlet

TRACK AND FIELD Incoming track and field athletes might envision walking around campus with new Dartmouth gear during their freshman fall. But as pole vaulter Corbin Mayes ’21 found out, student-athletes do not receive their bag of gear until the official start of their season. Waiting inside is typically a gray hoodie with a small D emblazoned on the chest, a basic black backpack, a gray cotton shirt, a shirt with the DP2 logo, shorts a longsleeve sports shirt and green spandex for events. Practice clothes — usually basketball shorts or sweats — are provided and are laundered by the athletics offices. Every athlete also receives green Nike sneakers at a one-time discounted price.

Equestrian has a reputation as an expensive sport. But according to Holly Langley ’19, boots, a helmet, gloves and show clothes are the only items she has been required to have.

Dartmouth riders borrow show shirts and have the option to borrow show breeches and show coats from the barn. Athletes are expected to purchase their own boots, helmet, and gloves, but funding from friends of Dartmouth equestrian has assisted students in the past.

Those items are kept in the barn for others to use as each class graduates. There’s still team gear that’s ordered in the fall and spring which athletes can purchase on their own if they are willing.

Tennis is known as a sport where replacement gear is frequent and necessary, but Catherine Cable ’20 noted that Dartmouth ensures each player is never without what they need. Each player receives practice-specific t-shirts and shorts, separate uniform tanks and skirts, sweatpants, hats and a limited number of tennis shoes per year. They are also given access to Dartmouth overgrips, dampeners and strings. Some players prefer different strings and bring their own. Athletes also bring their own rackets.

According to Cable, the collection varies from year to year depending on packages, sponsors and availability. The equipment is also affected by factors such as Dartmouth’s recent switch to Nike. Players are allowed to keep all gear except for borrowed travel duffel bags.

As one of the few water sports on campus, it’s more difficult for non-swimmers to imagine what sort of gear competitive swimming at Dartmouth requires. Ethan Cook ’20 said everyone on the swimming and diving teams receive the same package, though the gear varies from year to year. For use outside the pool, they receive a backpack with warm-ups, shirts, shorts and shoes to be used in the weight room. Access to new swimspecific practice equipment like fins or snorkels is given whenever the need for new ones arises. Each athlete receives two Dartmouth Speedos for practice and meets, swim caps as needed and a highperformance tech suit for Ivies.

Everything with the exception of their travel bags and winter parkas are theirs to keep.

A variety of Dartmouth gear carries baseball players through a year of Hanover weather. Justin Fowler ’18 said that each player is outfitted with polos, two Nike Dri-FIT workout shirts, two pairs of shorts, baseball cleats and turf shoes. For the winter, the players are provided with a parka and a pullover fleece. The team is also issued bats that are used throughout the season and are returned at season’s end.

With so many football players at Dartmouth, you’re almost guaranteed to see football gear daily. Football players receive a bag of Nike gear when they joined the team and a few new items each fall during preseason to equip them for the upcoming season. After graduation, they are allowed to keep the clothing and shoes they have received but leave behind all game equipment such as helmets, pads and jerseys. Everyone on the team receives the same collection of gear regardless of age or position. Jack Heneghan ’18 believes that the team is generally very happy with the items they get, as shown by the fact that most enjoy wearing the more casual items around campus.

Anna Luce ’21, a forward on Dartmouth’s women’s basketball team, said that the women receive different gear from year to year. Their gear includes a range of shirts, shorts, sweats, sweatshirts, standard sneakers for lifting, basketball shoes and bags. The team was given several options for green Nike basketball shoes to choose from at the beginning of the season and will receive another pair as the season progresses into Ivy League play. The athletes are allowed to keep most of the package with the exception of Dartmouth uniforms.

Carly Tower ’20, a member of the volleyball team shared that the women receive practice gear, uniforms and travel gear.

Each player receives several practice shirts, multiple pairs of spandex, knee pads, socks, court shoes, running shoes and team sweatpants. Their gear is renewed each season, and they are allowed to keep the previous year’s gear as they go. They are also given the option of ordering additional gear at their own cost — for example, Tower said that she has occasionally ordered additional gear for herself and for friends and family.

Women’s cross country places second and men place fifth at Heps

For the men’s and women’s crosscountry teams, Friday morning was arguably the most important morning of the season. The cross country-teams were at Van Cortlandt Park in New York City for the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships, the one meet of the season that pits the Ivy League schools in a race for the conference title.

The Big Green had great results. The women, having entered the race ranked No. 30 in the country, continued their strong season with a second-place finish, scoring 73 points — only seven points behind No. 24 Columbia University.

The men’s team had what men’s head coach Barry Harwick ’77 referred to as “the best race of the season,” finishing fifth overall with 138 points.

Hepsismorethanjustachampionship race at the end of the season; it binds the teams together more tightly than any other competition during the season.

The team celebrated Heps-o-ween, an annual tradition that occurs before both teams leave to compete at the Heps. On Wednesday, cross-country runners, decked out in unicorn onesies and other flair ran around campus, including through the halls of BakerBerry Library. Along the way, the bunch

made stops to invite individuals to join them at their upcoming race. Among those lucky to be stopped was College President Phil Hanlon, who agreed to take a picture with the whole squad outside Parkhurst Hall. “[The upperclassmen] had all this flair for us,” Ella Ketchum ’21 said.

“We all dressed up, and we ran with the boys’ team and we all ran around chanting. I really enjoyed it.”

The costumed run not only helps the team get closer but helps alleviate some of the stress that could come with the high pressure and anticipation of such an important race.

“We try to keep things in perspective as much as possible,” co-captain Pat Gregory ’18 said. “The guys on the team already put enough pressure on themselves.”

The goofy Dartmouth tradition seems to have worked in their favor.

Will Shafer ’18 led the men with a 19th-place finish, completing the 5-mile course in 25:34.8, achieving his personal goal of placing in the top-20. The Big Green put their remaining four scoring runners, Gregory (28th in 25:48.0), Patrick O’Brien ’21 (30th in 25:51.9), Ben Szuhaj ’19 (32nd in 25:55.3) and Sean Laverty ’20 (36th in 26:00.1), all within 26 seconds of Shafer.

Despite losing runners who competed in last year’s Heps to graduation, the men were not surprised by the performance given their training.

“A lot of the guys had their best races of the season yesterday and team-wise,” Shafer said. “It was our best performance, but at the same time there’s a feeling that we could still do quite a bit better.”

Overall, Harwick was pleased with the performance.

“We paced ourselves a lot better this time,” Harwick said. “When I talked to the team, we’re happy that we had our best race of the season, but we’re not quite satisfied [with] where we’re at yet, so we’ve got one more shot to go and I think we’ll do even better there.”

The women’s team entered the race hoping to build on its consistently strong performance this season. Co-captain Olivia Lantz ’19 continued her success from previous meets and earned First Team All-Ivy honors with a fifth-place finish, completing the 6-kilometer course in 21:17.0. The Heps is also special, Lantz explained, because it’s not just a smaller and less-crowded race, it’s personal and familiar. Teams can easily find their teammates around them and work together to move up in the race in the smaller Heps race than in a more crowded race like the NCAA Regionals.

Much of their team and individual strategy revolves around finding and sticking with each other, running as a pack as they do so often in practice.

“Running with my teammates during the race was a really good motivator,” Lantz said. “Seeing those Dartmouth uniforms helped push me to work my way up.”

For younger athletes, finding teammates helps them to navigate a high-stakes collegiate race.

“It was really helpful to me, having the people that I work out with every day, seeing them run alongside me, knowing that if they can do it, then I can do it too,” Ketchum said. “I definitely had faith in our team.”

Despite early lead, football team loses close game to Harvard

With its Ivy League Championship hopes largely in the balance, the Big Green had questions to answer on Saturday against Harvard University. However, the men fell short in key situations and suffered a 14th-straight loss to the Crimson, leaving the Big Green in need of serious help to win a conference championship.

Dartmouth’s last win against the Crimson was a 30-16 triumph in 2003, two years before head coach Buddy Teevens ’79 joined the team.

“We can’t change previous seasons,” wide receiver Hunter Hagdorn ’20 said. “We’re focused on this team and what we can control.”

First-half play has been a huge problem at times this year for Dartmouth, which has often needed second-half comebacks to win football games. The comeback habit hurt the Big Green against Columbia University last week after the offense fell short of a winning touchdown on the final drive of the game.

This week’s game against Harvard started differently. Harvard won the toss and deferred possession to the second half. Upon receiving the kick, the Dartmouth offense crafted a 10 play, 80-yard drive which resulted in a touchdown run from Ryder Stone ’18. The Big Green looked to have

again struggling to produce a drive as Heneghan threw an interception on the first Big Green drive of the final quarter. Harvard got another touchdown with 7:21 left in the game, and suddenly the Big Green found itself in need of yet another second-half comeback.

The offense finally delivered with a quick 80-yard drive that lasted 3:03 and resulted in a touchdown scramble from Heneghan. After the defense forced a Harvard punt, the Big Green had one last chance to change the direction of the game.

But with 22 seconds left, Heneghan was picked off at the Harvard 42yard line, effectively ending the

game.

“The loss was definitely tough, but we’re going to make the most of the rest of the games this season and focus on what we can control,” Stone said.

With the loss, Dartmouth must win each of its last games against Brown University, Cornell University and Princeton University to have a shot at the Ivy League Championship. Additionally, the team needs Columbia to lose two of its last three games against Brown, Cornell and Harvard since the Lions hold the tiebreaker over the Big Green by virtue of their win last Saturday.

Derrick White is a history professor whose research focuses on modern black history and sports history. White sat down with The Dartmouth to discuss the recent NFL protests, which gained traction in 2016 after thenSan Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick took a knee during the national anthem.

How would you describe the roots of the recent protest movement in the NFL? DW: I think in the years since Trayvon Martin, since his death and murder at the hands of George Zimmerman, I think black Americans have been grappling with what that means when a young person is murdered in an unjust manner. Black athletes have had these negative experiences with police forces before they became multimillionaires in their youth and into adulthood. They were provided a platform, and as these cases have evolved in which few of any police forces have been held accountable, athletes have taken an active role on protesting this.

It should also be noted that in the initial moment, it was really women — Megan Rapinoe in U.S. women’s soccer and women in the WNBA — who quickly recognized the power of the protests and saw the potential and message of the cause almost immediately. Somehow when we write the history of this movement in its aftermath, this gets left out for their positive response and engagement in the movement.

How does this movement compare to other similar and racially motivated protests in American sports? How is it different?

DW: In Miami after Martin[’s death], the Miami Heat, led by Dwayne Wade and LeBron James, publicized this issue by wearing hoodies and taking a photograph of them in the hoodies to demonstrate their support.

After the incident in Ferguson, Missouri, the St. Louis Rams protested, using the “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot” message. After Eric Gardner[’s death], players in the NBA and WNBA called attention to this issue by wearing “I Can’t Breathe” t-shirts. In some ways, Kaepernick is a continuation of that trajectory. However, what he has done is crystallize these

movements. These ideas have come to a core idea and become synonymous with Kaepernick.

Some of it is also because football is the sport — because its popularity has surpassed baseball — that has been draped in patriotism. It is also because football is the sport in which the players are faceless because they wear helmets. The game is not only rooted in patriotism but the players themselves are often viewed as interchangeable as pieces of the game. Very few black players have been able to become personalities in the modern age of football in the way that Tom Brady has, and most have been quarterbacks. Kaepernick as a successful quarterback and black quarterback in critical in this time.

In many ways, he was positioned to draw attention to this issue in a way people expected other black athletes to play this role and use their own platforms.

What does the public’s reaction say about our country?

DW: Black Americans are in favor —a strong majority is comfortable using this platform to call attention to police brutality in urban communities, whereas many whites disapprove of this action.

What do you make of President Donald Trump’s reaction?

How and why is he responding to this movement?

DW: Rather than as a way of critically engaging the issues raised

by Kaepernick about accountability and urban policing, the president is using this issue as an opportunity to galvanize his political base.

Blackness, in and of itself, is un-American. If you look at the politics of Trump, it’s racism and it courts active racism. What you see in his challenging of Kaepernick and other NFL players is a way of trying to enthuse his base to a presidency that is unpopular for most Americans, according to the polls. The question for the president is less about what the issue is, but how can he continue to rouse support and turn that into political ends in the election.

What about the NFL owners?

DW: The owners represent another issue. This is where the question of power comes in. As owners and billionaires in many cases, we know that many NFL owners had donated to the Trump campaign.

Thus, they are sympathetic to Trump’s outlook on the world in some ways, especially his business outlook. They see Kaepernick as challenging their authority. Rather

than listening to what Kaepernick and others are saying about what this protest is about, they see these young men, primarily African-American, as disposable bodies. This idea is somewhat rooted in the business model of the game — none of the contracts are guaranteed, and many of the players replaceable. In contrast, the NBA has embraced black culture as the source of its game and has moved away from trying to curtail this. They, too, are in a precarious situation in dealing with these protests, but rather than dictate to the players, they have tried to seek input and find a mutual resolution to the situation, beneficial for both parties. Players in the NBA have a say about these issues that NFL players don’t have.

There is this idea that they should somehow be thankful and grateful for having the opportunity to be successful or reach the social statuses some African-Americans have acquired through athletics, entertainment and other disciplines.

It’s the platform of the anthem where people view this movement unfavorably, but it is also the fact that as black athletes, they are expected to not say anything that challenges the American ideal. In some sense, black athletic success is tantamount to the American Dream—like only in America can you become Kaepernick, Muhammad Ali or Michael Jordan. Thus, black athletes should be thankful to be in that position and not dare call American ideals into question.

DW: I think that kneeling is a respectful gesture. We kneel to pray, we give thanks and ask for grace through kneeling. I believe there is a certain kind of humility in the gesture, but at the same time it is also suggested that the goals and aims that the anthem supposedly represents are incomplete.

Kneeling has nothing to with the respectability of the actual protest. It doesn’t matter how or when the protest was conceived. People will be upset that Kaepernick or anyone else challenges the assumptions of America. Protests about blacks and other people of color will always be seen as anti-American — the Civil Rights Movement was seen as a communist conspiracy. The actual form of the protest is an interesting discussion, but it matters very little in ter ms of people’s reactions. The idea is that some people want these black athletes to stay in their place — as entertainment for consumption.

The white fans don’t want their world interrupted by politics, especially black politics, while they watch football on Sundays, but they’re perfectly okay with black and white athletes bashing their heads in for their entertainment dollar.

F la g-bur ning has been established as protected speech — is the act of taking a knee during the anthem in the same category?

DW: I think that the Supreme Court’s ruling in regards to burning the American flag legally covers kneeling before the anthem. The issue that people have is that Kaepernick and other athletes alike make a large sum of money.

Thus, the income they earn means they should not have the right to protest. I think people understand the right to protest is protected by the First Amendment. They have a problem imagining why one would protest when one has a wealthy livelihood because they have no understanding that for these black athletes that money does not protect you in circumstances where you are already assumed to be guilty, as seen with Michael Bennett’s experience in Las Vegas this earlier this month.

The team has four first-years on the roster, two of whom — forwards Chris Knight ’21 and Adrease Jackson ’21 — will rotate in to help ease the loss of Dickinson and Ngwudo. Wright also noted Brendan Barry ’20 as a three-point shooting point guard who should see increased minutes this year.

Starting guard Guilien Smith ’19 looks to continue the success he had last year as well.

Looking ahead, Dartmouth has a few games that stand out in the coming season.

“We’re playing on ESPN2 against [the University of] Notre Dame, which I think is going to be a really fun game,” Boudreaux said.

“Anytime you play a rivalry game against Harvard [University] or Princeton, those games are going to be really important.”

The team growth has been impressive since the coaching staff, headed by David McLaughlin, took charge prior to last season.

“We’re recruiting higher-level players,” Wright said. “The switch in coaching staff before my junior year was a big help. Those guys are really high level and have really improved the culture of our program.”

McLaughlin’s coaching emphasis has hit home for the team’s veterans, including Wright.

“McLaughlin emphasizes a work culture,” Wright said. “Work hard, work smart, work together. From a more team aspect he focuses on the basics: transition defense, moving the ball, taking care of the ball offensively — all the little things that make great teams great.”

The Big Green, who have been practicing since the very start of October, look to start off strong at Quinnipiac University on Saturday, Nov. 11.

With only starting guard and forward Fanni Szabo ’17 graduating before the 2017-2018 campaign, the women’s basketball team is poised to improve upon last year’s 8-19 record.
