Dear Class of 2022, As we write to you during our sophomore summer, we can’t help but be distracted by your soon-tobe freshman fall. Freshman year remains in our memory as a blur of brilliant gold and saffron leaves of a fresh autumn. We remember it as a constant state of elation, eagerness and endless expectation.

While it’s only been one year since, we find ourselves in a vastly different frame of mind. We’ve grown familiar with the College on the Hill. At times, we long to return to where you will soon be in a few weeks — and in more ways than one, we envy what you will get to experience this September.

In that sense, creating this issue has done a lot for us. It has let us relive our earliest Dartmouth moments and recall the memories that we found fondest. At times, we were surprised by how universal some of these moments are with the very friends and peers who made the issue with us.

And indeed, what you’ll find in this issue might be considered universal — nothing that varies too much from a typical freshman issue, at least in topic matter. The main aspects of the Dartmouth college experience don’t vary too wildly over time.

But just because some things do not change doesn’t mean that the ways in which we address them have to remain the same too. What we strove for in this year’s Freshman Issue — and what we hope you will strive for in the next four years — was to push the expected to new limits. Don’t settle for what things are “supposed to be like.” Take the expected that Dartmouth gives you and make it unfamiliar again.

The greatest thing about being a freshman is having fresh eyes to look at the pillars of Dartmouth in new ways, demanding that the expected be pushed to its limit. For this, we envy you wholeheartedly.

And for this, we welcome you with anticipation.

The offices of The Dartmouth are located on the second floor of Robinson Hall, affectionately known as “Robo.”

With editors and reporters cycling in and out as well as business staff facilitating the day-to-day operations, the offices are always filled with activity.

The Dartmouth holds the distinction of being America’s oldest college newspaper (founded in 1799) and prints daily. In addition to our day-today written content, we have a blog (Dartbeat) as well as a social media presence on Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter. With nearly two million online page views every year, The Dartmouth serves an important role as the College’s independent newspaper.

Most importantly, we are a teaching institution: many of our current Directorate members had their first taste of journalism at The Dartmouth and have stuck with it since, gaining realworld skills in editing, communication and management. Keep an eye out for applications for both our editorial and business sections during Orientation.

The newspaper and the Dartmouth community welcome you to Hanover — our doors are always open.

EDITORIAL News The news section keeps up with the pulse of the Dartmouth community, informing campus and our broader audience with happenings from all corners of the College. When Dartmouth-related news breaks, the community looks to The D for the important details. Recently, we’ve covered topics such as sexual misconduct allegations against multiple professors, the newly-announced capital campaign and housing controversies. Through investigative pieces, we delve deeper into campus issues and incorporate data analysis and visualization, providing insight into topics from political leanings on campus to the impact of social programming.

Sports The Dartmouth’s sports coverage extends beyond game recaps to include columns, Q&As, weekly features and “Roundups” of a week’s game activity.

Recent content included a series of columns on senior athletes and their last terms as well as The Dartmouth Sports awards for the year’s most outstanding players. The sports section has featured a broad range of topics, from Mormon players and how their faith ties into football to different coaching styles by different coaches and how they motivate their players.

Arts Arts highlights creative endeavors at the College, covering everything from performances and exhibitions at the Hopkins Center for the Arts to

new movie reviews. The arts section also regularly features profiles of the College’s own artistic talent, such as student writers, playwrights, musicians and painters.

Opinion The opinion section offers staff columnists and community guest columnists a platform for lively debate on relevant issues, both on and off campus. Recent pieces have taken a critical look at the current political environment, the College administration and Dartmouth’s social life. Opinion also features work from student cartoonists commenting on campus and popular culture.

Mirror The Mirror, our weekly eight-page magazine published every Wednesday, focuses on campus culture and student life through both long-form features and lighthearted stories. In addition to senior columns, photo essays and “Through the Looking Glass” reflection pieces from guest writers, The Mirror has recently examined themes such as time, blessings in disguise and beauty.

Snapchat The writers and designers on the Snapchat team put out The Dartmouth’s weekly Snap story, featuring a mix of humor, campus commentary and news. Whether you’re an aspiring designer, an experienced video editor or a budding humor writer, the Snapchat section has a place for you.

Dartbeat Dartbeat is our blog, which features content such as weekly “overheards,” surveys, Dartmouth-edition “Texts From Last Night” and more. Check out the page for your fill of Dartmouthspecific laughs and musings.

Photo and Multimedia Editorial isn’t just about the written word. Our reporting would not be complete without the hard work of our photographers and graphic designers, whose visuals give life to the paper.

BUSINESS While our editorial staff is working around the clock making sure our pages are filled with relevant, up-todate information, our business staff works to ensure that the production and operation of the paper run as smooth as possible. That’s because The Dartmouth receives no funding from the College — we are a registered nonprofit in the state of New Hampshire and are the largest student-run business in Hanover. That is, The Dartmouth operates as a business run entirely by you, the students, and the business staff provides an unparalleled real-world opportunity to engage in this business with a variety of different teams.

Every story undergoes multiple rounds of edits to ensure accuracy before publication.

Advertising The advertising staff works to sell the ads that fill our pages on a daily basis.

The bulk of their work includes building relationships with local clients — from Dartmouth academic departments to local businesses — to ensure that our advertising platform fits with their specific marketing needs. Together, they build and implement the out-bound sales strategy that makes up the bulk of the paper’s revenue.

Technology Our technology staff supports The Dartmouth’s web and mobile presence.

They create customized websites for our Special Issues and help design and implement changes to our website.

More recently, they have begun work to integrate the paper with mobile news mediums, such as Apple News,

Facebook Instant Articles and Snapchat.

Strategy If you’d like to solve real-world business problems, then our strategy staff is the place for you. They operate as The Dartmouth’s internal consultants.

Each quarter, they split up into teams and tackle pressing issues we face every day. How do we effectively recruit and retain talent? How can we change our advertising offerings to fit a mobile-first media landscape? How do we better foment a strong community of the paper’s alumni? The strategy staff has tackled all these questions and more over the last few years.

Communications and Marketing This staff aims to refine and improve both the internal and external perspective of the paper. Internally,

they focus on staff development, helping plan termly socials along with our annual Changeover and Banquet celebrations. Externally, they manage staff recruitment, run our social media accounts, help with recruiting and develop our alumni network.

Product Development Ever been told that print news is a dying industry? Try telling that to members of our product development team. They focus exclusively on making sure that our product offerings remain useful and relevant with our readers by developing alternative revenue streams that add to The Dartmouth’s core news offering. Recently, they’ve worked on building out a digital classifieds section and developing of a Dartmouththemed coffee table book based on the paper’s historical archives.

Many students go through four years at Dartmouth with few, if any, direct interactions with members of the administration, even though many administrators work near the center of campus in Parkhurst Hall. Yet these individuals, though distant at times from students, take actions and make decisions every day that significantly affect the Dartmouth student body.

The five top administrators at the College, who supervise D a r t m o u t h ’s u n d e rg r a d u at e experience, are the President, Provost, Dean of the College, Dean of the Faculty and Executive Vice President. Three of these i n d i v i d u a l s s p o k e with T he Dartmouth in interviews about their roles on campus.

The largest and arguably most controversial change brought by Hanlon is Moving Dartmouth Forward, a program launched in 2015 to reform student life on campus, which included the creation of a new residential housing system and the imposition of a hard alcohol ban. “There are a lot of great ideas and worthy causes on campus — things that would be worth funding or doing,” Kotz said. “But we don’t always have the funding or the bandwidth to take them all on.”

Joseph Helble, the current dean of the T hayer School of Engineering, will take over as provost in November. Kotz said that he has been working closely with Helble since he was appointed, and that Helble has the qualifications necessary for the job.

Dean of the College The Dean of the College is the senior administration official overseeing all aspects of undergraduate life at Dartmouth.

In addition to being in charge of undergraduate academic affairs, the Dean also directs several departments related to student life on campus such as the College health service, office of residential life, Judicial Affairs, outdoor programs, the Collis Center and the undergraduate deans.

Kathryn Lively, a sociology professor and the South House professor, was appointed interim Dean of the College on July 1.

Lively, who will serve a one-year term as interim dean, replaced Rebecca Biron, who stepped down from her position to return to teaching and research in the Spanish and comparative literature departments.

Lively joined the Dartmouth faculty in 2002 and has served as the South House professor since the inception of the new housing system. In a June interview with The Dartmouth, Lively said she was initially concerned about her candidacy for the interim dean position because she remained committed to her house professorship, but that she still enthusiastically accepted the offer.

While she was Dean of the College, Biron co-chaired a task force last year exploring the possibility of expanding the College’s undergraduate student population by 10 to 25 percent, a scenario that was met with skepticism from the Dartmouth community. The College’s Board of Trustees eventually decided against expanding the enrollment.

When Monik Walters ’19 and Nicole Knape ’19 were elected Student Assembly president and vice president in April, they told The Dartmouth that they were “changing the game.” This summer, they have started working on a new SA website, a speaker series and the possibility of a student role on the Board of Trustees. During their time in leadership, they said they plan on tackling mental health initiatives, sexual assault prevention and awareness and diversity and inclusion on campus. As the first black female SA president and the first all-female president and vice president pair since 2008, Walters and Knape talked to The Dartmouth about their goals as SA’s new leadership in Dartmouth’s milestone 250th year.

You said during your campaign that you saw inclusivity as the greatest issue presently facing Dartmouth. What are the issues on campus that disproportionately af fect marginalized communities, like POC and LGBTQIA+ groups, that SA can work to address?

MW: I want to see more efforts toward creating resources for groups like women of color or LGBTQIA+ communities to be more comfortable in their identities on campus. For example, there was a lot of concern about the school moving the PAC and Rainbow rooms from Robinson Hall. work to make sure our Greek organizations are safe and inclusive?

NK: From conversations that I’ve had, you see that a lot of minorities and women often don’t find that they have a space that they feel comfortable on campus in general.

In Greek life specifically, you walk in and it’s maybe less diverse than a lot of other pockets on campus. We want to try exploring why certain spaces are more typified or less inclusive compared to others. It’s also an issue with the culture that has developed over years and years, and improving it has a lot to do with having conversations between the different Greek houses.

MW: One thing I would say is, especially as someone who is unaffiliated, I think the disconnect exists where some people feel more comfortable in Greek spaces than others. I’m not saying Greek life is always about partying and socializing, but a lot of the conversations about Greek life on campus appear to be very black and white in that regard, even though there’s a whole array of characteristics that go into being affiliated. In trying to represent as many people on campus as possible, we want to make sure that as many different voices about this topic are being heard. Maybe that means collaborating with the House system people to work with Greek houses, and utilizing more common spaces that don’t necessarily have a Greek attachment to find some common ground.

The College’s 2017 Sexual

Misconduct Survey found that 34 percent of male undergraduate respondents reported experiencing nonconsensual sexual contact since arriving on campus, up from 28 percent in 2015. How is SA working to reduce sexual assault and dating violence and address sexual violence awareness on campus?

NK: We’re definitely brainstorming how we can make sexual violence education more concrete and reach everyone on campus. It’s mostly putting a helping hand toward the College’s Sexual Violence Prevention Project as it goes on for the next four years. What Mo and I can do on that front is advertise events that are happening and try to cater the climate on campus as much as we can to be open to programming that’s set up by experts in the work.

MW: What we’re trying to do is increase the speed of existing initiatives, and amplify them in whatever way we can. Two starting points we see are in augmenting resources for survivors and educational initiatives that students have to go through in order to graduate. We can collaborate with the Wellness center, collaborate with the Title IV coordinator, collaborate with SPCSA, and the students that are already doing so much good work to make sure that Dartmouth is as safe as possible.

Dartmouth enrolls more students from the top 1 percent of household incomes than the

bottom 60 percent. Where do we see this gap reflected on campus, and how can SA make Dartmouth more accessible for lower-income students?

NK: There’s definitely a very felt class divide on campus, where there’s always discussions about brands that people wear on campus, that visible token of wealth that maybe some students can’t afford.

It’s there in conversations that I’ve had with floormates, and with my residents as an Undergraduate Advisor. When we talk about their individual backgrounds, we talk about how they grew up and how they’ll literally buy things that can’t afford, just to feel like they don’t have to hide behind the wealthy majority of Dartmouth.

MW: One thing SA can focus on is network opportunities. In spaces where people have to network, the difference in wealth between students is clearer. A lot of people have pre-established networks that they’ve had before Dartmouth, and family connections at companies that everyone’s trying to work at. And I think that SA can also focus on also making sure there are networking opportunities for people who don’t necessarily want to go into corporate America. We can compile resources and guides, as sort of a networking 101. Q&A with Olympic athlete and filmmaker Alexi Pappas ’12 B y julian nathan The Dartmouth Staff

For most Olympic athletes, being the best at their sport is the pinnacle of success. But for Alexi Pappas ’12 — an Olympic long distance-runner — success on the field is not enough. Pappas is also an accomplished actor, writer and filmmaker. As she was preparing for the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics, where she broke Greek national records, Pappas began writing, co-directing and star ring in “Tracktown.” Also starring Rachel Dratch ’88, “Tracktown” is a story about an Olympic runner whose life is upended after she twists her ankle during preparation for the Olympic trials. In this Q&A with The Dartmouth, Pappas recalls her experiences at the College and shares words of advice with incoming freshmen.

When you were a high school s e n i o r, w h a t m a d e yo u gravitate toward Dartmouth?

AP: I had this feeling when I came to campus that Dartmouth was this big, different kind of summer camp. I felt something when I was there, and I knew it was going to be really different for me coming from California. But I knew that I would love it despite the challenges.

I think, more specifically, it was the wilderness smells around campus and the sight of people smiling all around campus. I was like, “Oh, I would love to be a person sitting at that table at Collis.”

That was a product of sitting down with my professors and learning how to learn. I think some people come to Dartmouth feeling overlyprepared for the academics. Some people come feeling a little underprepared, but hard work makes all the difference.

I know that you were in the Dog Day Performers while you were at Dartmouth.

Were there any other student organizations that you were a part of that you found were especially influential in steering you to where you are now?

AP: Yeah. Well, first of all, the reason I joined Dog Day was because I wasn’t good enough to be on the travel squad of the cross-country team my freshman year. I was left home from the meet when all my new teammates were gone, and I was getting a million blitzes from this Dog Day group and they were like, “Come audition, just play games.” So even that I auditioned for that was this wonderful, magical thing where I was just lonely, and it changed my whole life ... I also became more involved with the creative writing side of things. I got a grant to put on a 10-minute play through the theater department. It was called “The Lonely Boy Eats Lunch with his Lunch,” and it was the most wonderful experience.

As a record-setting athlete and a filmmaker, you have a diverse set of interests.

Do you have any advice for i n c o m i n g f re s h m e n wh o might also be balancing different passions?

AP: Think of your different interests as choices you make instead of sacrifices. That might mean thinking of yourself as a writer who writes essays on the way to a track meet. But Dartmouth is such a great place to have multiple interests, though. Everyone is so supportive, and it’s an easy place to dip your toes in a lot of different

areas. I sometimes went to DOC meetings and other clubs here and there because I had friends that were involved in them, and it just felt so normal to try new things here.

You became close friends with NCAA champion Abbey D’Agostino ’14 pretty early in your Dartmouth career when you two were teammates. Can you tell me about how that friendship formed and how you’ve sustained that?

AP: I met Abbey when I was a junior and she was a freshman, and we connected really quickly.

I sort of became her mentor and helped teach her how to write. I think it really helped that we had such similar values and aspirations.

I remember that we spent a lot

of Friday nights staying in while everyone else went out partying.

Later, we went to the U.S. Olympic trials together. Even now, Abbey is one of my best friends even though we live in different cities.

She gave a speech at my wedding.

And I think we’re still close because at our athletic level, there’s not a lot of people who’ve had such a well-rounded college experience.

The fact that we both loved our experiences at Dartmouth just bonded us together.

I read in your article on the “Tracktown” site that you spent the earlier part of your Dartmouth career getting back into shape after not running for a little while.

Memory Lane meets Webster Avenue: a history of Greek life B y eily brady

What do a small independentlyrun library and a noisy, stickyfloored basement have in common?

They are both iterations of Dartmouth’s Greek Life system, according to College archivist Peter Carini.

Greek life has long been an important part of the College’s culture. But the history behind the parties and pong tells a story of Greek life that is far from one-dimensional. Dating back to the 1780s, Dartmouth’s Greek system originated with two literary societies, Carini said: the Society of Social Friends, founded in 1783, and the United Fraternity, founded three years later.

These organizations housed their own libraries, purchasing books that the College didn’t have or wouldn’t buy. The collections moved between students before the College eventually granted the organizations space in residence

Between the 1840s and the 1900s, many Greek organizations developed and membership in the houses became more popular. Still, however, it wasn’t until the 1920s that the fraternities started to take their current form.

He added that women from other schools were probably introduced to Dartmouth’s Greek life around that time. They came to Dartmouth for “big weekends” such as Homecoming and Winter Carnival, when fraternities would host large parties in conjunction with the College-wide festivities.

Shortly after fraternities took up a more social for m, they started fighting many of the discriminatory clauses set by the national organizations, said College library head of special collections Jay Satterfield. In 1954, the

Undergraduate Council required that Dartmouth’s frater nities either do away with discriminatory clauses or localize, creating their own organizations separate from the national organizations and their prejudices. This mandate, in large part, led to the mostly local fraternity system that Dartmouth retains today.

“A lot of the fraternities went local because they couldn’t get their national chapters to change the policies, and that’s sort of what creates the local fraternity system here,” Satterfield said. “Of course, the irony of that is that a lot of the problems we have with Greek life at Dartmouth are because it’s a local system and there aren’t the same checks that fraternities have at some other places.”

Performance groups provide opportunities for student growth B y LILY JOHNSON

As fall term approaches, new and returning students begin to search for new opportunities to showcase their talents and become involved in the Dartmouth community.

One of these opportunities is through the multitude of studentrun performance groups active on campus.

Most perfor mance groups on campus fall under dance, a cappella and improv comedy.

These performance groups operate outside the supervision and control of academic departments or the productions at the Hopkins Center for the Arts. Students can also create their own performance groups, as the bands “Fake Nudes” and “Read Receipts” have done recently. Many performance groups hold auditions at the beginning of the fall term that are open to all students.

There are a variety of dance groups on campus that focus on a wide range of styles. Fusion, for instance, showcases jazz, contemporary and hip-hop routines. Other dance groups include Sugar plum, which specializes in contemporary music;

Sheba, a hip-hop group; and D-Step, Dartmouth’s step dancing group. Dance groups choreograph routines, mix and arrange their own music and coordinate costumes every year. They also perform at fraternities, at Collis Student Center shows and in conjunction with fundraising efforts.

Sabyne Pierre ’20, a member of D-Step, said that D-Step also collaborates to perform for themes they support. For Black History Month, D-Step worked with black affinity groups on campus to prepare a showcase and even performed before the College’s showing of Black Panther.

Additionally, D-Step partnered with other female-led performance groups for a sexual violence awareness showcase. Similarly, the a cappella group the Rockapellas perform freedom songs and songs that deal with social issues in all of their performances.

Teaghan Callaway ’21 said that being involved in Fusion has also connected her to upperclasswomen who she now considers mentors on campus. She added that she felt a part of the group as a firstyear member, as other dancers encouraged her to choreograph

“I’ve noticed that since I have started improv I really am much quicker on my feet in real life,” Kellman said. “Interviews, presentations and most importantly just regular conversations — I’m just better at communicating.”

Most of all, performance groups provide students with an outlet to be themselves and forget the stress of life as a student. Sam Seifert ’20, a member of Casual Thursday, said that through improv he found a space for laughter on campus.

“Every once and a while a realization hits me: improv is an opportunity where I get to make jokes with my friends and laugh,” Seifert said. “What’s crazy is that we do it in front of others sometimes.

I’m so grateful to have that in my life and bring joy to others.”

Seifert’s advice for freshmen considering joining performance groups is to not let the stress of auditions get to you, since everyone in a group auditioned at some point — just go for it.

Dartmouth is currently in the preliminary stages of integrating a four-year, co-curricular leadership program into its undergraduate graduation requirements. Known as the Dartmouth Leadership Project, the program is set to stipulate participation in a selection of workshops, experiential learning opportunities and a senior capstone project over the course of a Dartmouth student’s college career.

It will be the first comprehensive leadership plan of its kind amongst the College’s peers.

“Preparing our students to be leaders is, in my mind, the most important work that we do at Dartmouth … Regardless of the career path they choose, Dartmouth graduates will use the timeless skill afforded by their liberal arts education to have an impact on the world around them,” College President Phil Hanlon wrote in a statement on the Dartmouth Leadership Project’s website. “These aren’t simply the capacities employers seek; they’re the foundational qualities of true citizen-leaders.”

According to Biron, curriculum for first-year students will focus on emotional intelligence, while second-year curriculum will be geared toward activities that foster multicultural awareness. Third- and fourth-year students will be expected to participate in “communitybuilding” activities and projects that involve “strategic collaborative action,” culminating in a capstone senior project determined by the student.

According to The Call to Lead campaign’s website, the Dartmouth Leadership Project hopes to raise $25 million for its endowment. Biron states that these funds would be used to “scale up some of the more general interest current programs, add new programs … and hire a director of the co-curriculum who would be devoted to doing the work of building the curriculum out and continuing to

assess it over time.”

Although the Leader ship Project still rests in its early stages of development, several of its components have begun test runs on campus. Last fall, the Student Wellness Center initiated a series of emotional intelligence workshops held on each first-year residential floor. This summer, a group of 16 students participated in the Collaborative Leadership Pilot, where they took part in several group problem-solving workshops and an outdoor team-based challenge involving a ropes course, brainteasers and orienteering.

As the Leadership Project prepares to introduce a more fullyrealized curriculum, its website notes that it will continue to incentivize voluntary participation in preexisting leadership programs on campus. Examples of such programs include the Dartmouth Center for the Advancement of Learning’s Telling My Story program, the Office of Pluralism and Leadership’s heritage month planning committees and the Rockefeller Center’s first-year Dartmouth Leadership Attitudes and Behaviors Program. For current students, involvement in these programs will contribute toward eligibility to apply for “advanced or selective experiences” to be determined in the future.

Q&A with photojournalist James Nachtwey ’70 B y anthony robles The Dartmouth Staff

James Nachtwey ’70 has had a career that has taken him around the world, from Lebanon to Ireland to South Africa to the former Soviet Union. Since he became a conflict photographer in 1981, Nachtwey has won the Overseas Press Club’s Robert Capa Gold Medal five times, the World Press Photo award twice and the 2007 TED prize. He worked with the Bang Bang Club — four South African photographers who documented the end of apartheid in the early ’90s. In 2001, a documentary based on his career called “War Photographer” was released. The documentary was nominated for an Academy Award.

The inspiration for his career, however, began at Dartmouth, as the civil rights movement and anti-Vietnam War sentiment hit their fever pitch. These events, as well as his discovery of art history, would prove instrumental in helping Nachtwey become the

world-renowned photographer he is today.

What steps led you to become a newspaper photographer for the Albuquerque Journal?

JN: After I g raduated from Dartmouth, I decided that I had had four years of a very good educational experience, but I wanted to be educated in other ways. As much as I truly valued the education I got here, I decided to explore the world. I was in the Merchant Marine. I signed up to work on ships. I still had not yet decided to become a photographer, but I began to take pictures with a borrowed camera. When I came back from that experience, I decided I wanted to go to Europe.

Because I was interested in art history through my experience at Dartmouth, I visited art museums.

When I went to the Prado Museum in Madrid, I saw the original works of Goya, in particular this series of lithographs called “The Disasters of War.” The images were so raw and

really portrayed the brutality and inhumanity of war and very much reflected what I was thinking about the Vietnam War. That’s when I began to decide that I wanted to be a photographer. So I began to teach myself. I didn’t have enough money to go to graduate school. I read books about composition, about how to develop film and how to make prints. I would rent darkroom space and teach myself to do these things. I built up a portfolio and I took it to the Boston bureau at Time Magazine. I went down to New York to meet the director of photography, who gave the green light to the Boston bureau to use me as a stringer. Eventually, I was making a living of sorts, but I decided I wasn’t working enough. I really needed to work in a concentrated way every day, day in and day out. I thought working for a newspaper would be the way to do that. I applied to newspapers in various parts of America that I didn’t know at all. I wanted to go someplace completely new. Things might happen thousands of times and that’s a statistic, but what happens to one person in a single moment is a human moment, and that’s what I wanted to capture. I wanted to really give viewers a sense of the emotions of the people who were experiencing these events so that they could relate to them in a human way.

Your first assignment was in Northern Ireland in 1981.

What led you there and what was that experience like?

The infamous dormitory, known as

The Lodge, was built in 1961 to act as overflow or budget accommodation for the Hanover Inn. By 1974, it was repurposed for student housing and in 1993 it was renovated. New Hampshire and Topliff Halls are the other dormitories that are a part of South House.

New Hampshire Hall, built in 1908, was used as a barracks in 1918 for World War I and operated as one of ten Navy V-12 dormitories during World War II. It was remodeled between 1928 and 1930 and again in 1986 to add a one-story kitchen extension to the rear.

Topliff Hall was subsequently constructed in 1920. In 1958, the dorm was renovated to increase the number of single rooms from 50 to 122. Like New Hampshire Hall, it was remodeled in 1986 to add a kitchen.

Unlike the older dorms of South House, most of the East Wheelock cluster, originally comprised of Andres, Morton and Zimmerman Halls, was erected between 1985 and 1987. In the summer of 2000, McCulloch Hall joined the existing dorms to complete the cluster. As the first dorm built after the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, the hall was the first to have a built-in elevator.

Griffin emphasized the town’s support of Dartmouth’s desire to build more student residences.

With more undergraduate students living off campus, graduate students are pushed further away from Hanover. In addition, there is a concern for the “deteriorating quality of privately owned housing for undergraduates” due to poor maintenance, according to Griffin.

The inadequately maintained homes negatively impact neighborhoods, reducing the amount of housing available to faculty, staff and graduate students.

Your freshman year at Dartmouth has a special kind of glow. There will be moments in which it feels like the best time of your life — when you make friends with people from all across the country, when you experience the magic of four distinct seasons, when you uncover opportunities for learning whose existence you never fathomed. Dizzy with thoughts of friends from places like Taiwan and North Dakota, jewel-colored leaves and classes on everything from human-centered design to catastrophe and human survival and the ethics of reproduction, you will at times lose your breath to wonder.

Freshman year will also feel like the most difficult time of your life. It is when you leave your home behind to come to a place where almost everyone is a stranger, it is when you are exposed to academic challenges you never thought possible and it is when you are tasked with finding your place at Dartmouth, whatever that means and wherever that might be. Faced with lonely lunches and overwhelming options and the empty space where your friends and loved ones from home should stand, you will at times feel lost.

We hope that in reading the Class of 2022 freshman edition of The Mirror, you will feel prepared for these breath-taking highs and soul-crushing lows. And we want you to know that those feelings don’t necessarily end after freshman year: Dartmouth has its ups and downs for any student, regardless of their background, class year or projected image. PC: Do less.

ED: Go to the 10:00 am class. Drink more Emergen-C. Call home more. Switch to the 5-swipe meal plan ASAP. JSJ: Do not take Psych 001.

HW: Skipping an on night to get up early and go outside is SO WORTH IT. KS: Do what makes you happiest, regardless of what everyone else may or may not think about that.

DO YOU HAVE ANY MAJOR REGRETS FROM YOUR TIME THUS FAR AT DARTMOUTH? EJS: I regret joining every single club the beginning of freshman year. You will find your place, and you don’t have to try anything and everything in order to do so.

PC: Not valuing relationships enough. At the end of the day, your relationships are what you’re going to remember most about this place.

ED: Not dropping a really hard class in a subject I wasn’t even interested in pursuing, not taking my swim test during Trips, not taking advantage of the “Take your professor to lunch” program until this summer.

JSJ: Not being more knowledgeable about the academic system at Dartmouth going into my freshman year.

KS: I wish I took more risks freshman year.

ANY CRINGEY/FUNNY FRESHMAN YEAR STORIES? EJS: I’m from a warmer part of the country and am not accustomed to walking on ice. I was walking with my hands in my pockets and slipped on ice and fell directly on my face and broke my nose. I tried to pull my hands out to break my fall, but they were stuck. It was very tragic.

PC: I thought I was supposed to put my social security number on my resume.

Don’t do that.

JSJ: Spilled an entire carton of Goldfish on the first floor of my freshman dorm the second day of orientation week.

HW: Once, I woke up early to go skiing with my UGA, only to open the door to my outer room and have 800 balloons fall in on me. My UGA and some floor mates stayed up until 6:00 am filling our room with balloons ... We didn’t go skiing.

WHEN AND HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH THE DARTMOUTH? EJS: I started copyediting my freshman fall and then began writing for the Mirror my freshman spring. I knew that I wanted to be involved with the newspaper in some capacity because I love writing.

PC: I started writing and got hooked.

JSJ: Middle of freshman fall.

KS: I joined my freshman fall because I wanted to get involved with the writing community on campus.

FAVORITE CLASS YOU’VE TAKEN? WHY IS IT YOUR FAVORITE? EJS: My Writing 5, which was a creative nonfiction class. Before taking it, I had never thought that nonfiction writing could be creative.

PC: Government 86.32 Tocqueville’s Democracy in America. I found myself consistently excited to continue the class conversation, even after the three-hour class ended. Also, Professor Muirhead knows how to lead a great class while never seeming too controlling or intimidating.

JSJ: Sociology 47 Race and Ethnicity in the U.S.; the discussions gave me a lot of insight and I was actually inspired to do the readings and work.

KS: Engines 12 Design Thinking; it changed the way I thought about people and how to empathize with them.

WHERE HAVE YOU FOUND A COMMUNITY ON CAMPUS? HOW? EJS: In my sorority, in The Dartmouth, and in people who share my academic interests. That definitely wasn’t immediate — it was more of a gradual process.

PC: I’ve found a community at The Dartmouth, in my friends I lived with in Washington, DC my freshman summer, and in my greek house.

ED: The Cube at night contains a truly great mix of people. You can always count on other people being there late at night while you feverishly write a paper/finish a lab. The camaraderie is so real.

JSJ: Kappa Kappa Gamma, my dorm (particularly freshman dorm, Wheeler).

KS: I’ve found a community in my best friends, mainly by just spending as much time as I can doing things like swimming in the river and just eating at the Class of 1953 Commons with them. When you’re not stressing about work or trying so hard not to socialize and you’re just relaxing with people, I think that’s when you bond the most.

The Baker-Berry Library Bell Tower: Tradition for the Taking STORY Of all the wisdom imparted during my freshman orientation week, one suggestion resonated most. This wisdom was offered up during the Twilight Ceremony by a student on the eve of her senior year who stood in the BEMA, short for Big Empty Meeting Area before the corralled Class of 2021. She spoke of time at Dartmouth — how jampacked schedules rendered the days short, how a 10-week term can feel like a single month and how lucky we were to be on the cusp of four entire years in this magical place. Her advice? Simple and concrete: each day, when the “Alma Mater” rings

Be present for those 30 seconds. Look up from the textbook in Blobby or from the phone in your hand as you cross the Green toward the Collis Center for dinner. Take a second, even glance up to the bell tower, and allow yourself to remember that you are here.

The Baker Bell Tower, erected in 1928, is arguably the focal point on campus.

The landmark is based on Philadelphia’s Independence Hall and is the tallest point on campus, rising 124 feet above the main

library. The tower houses 16 bells that ring each day on the hour and half-hour. The bells also play songs three times a day, including the ritual ringing of the “Alma Mater” at 6:00 p.m. Although the bells were initially operated using paper scrolls with patterned holes, the system was computerized in 1979.

The Bell Tower underwent its first significant renovation a mere two years ago. Patrick O’Hern , the capital renewal program manager who oversaw the project, explained the necessity of updating the tower — in accordance with the original construction — to ensure its longevity.

Less obvious than the visual presence of the tower is the fact that students and members of the community can request songs to be played on the bells by simply

Students can choose from a database of

songs that have already been programmed, or they can request new songs that are then adapted for the bells. The extensive database encompasses hits from each decade, ranging from Debussy’s “Clair de Lune” to Smash Mouth’s “All Star.”

Returning to my room after my meeting with O’Hern, I settled in at my desk and found myself zooming in on images I had taken of the graffitied tower walls. Moving over rafters and uprights, I came across an unexpected inscription: “Bill Chisholm ’91 + Kimberly Ford ’91” — my parents.

For Cahill, the remedy to her homesickness came in the form of Aquinas House, the Catholic student center on campus. Because she looked into it beforehand, she became involved quickly, and it continues to be an important part of her student experience. In fact, right after her interview with the Mirror, Cahill left for an event at Aquinas House.

Cahill explained that in addition to the friends she’s found through Aquinas House, she has benefitted from having a physical space to relax and unwind. That said, she also recognizes that not everyone needs a structured community — sometimes a good group of friends is enough.

Alex Mena ’20 is from Houston, Texas, and she said that she wasn’t worried about homesickness before coming to Dartmouth. She had wanted to go to college in the Northeast, away from home. She had attended out-of-state summer programs before, but those were usually only a week long, so college was her first time being away from

home for an extended amount of time.

Mena said that before classes start, she was busy with the First Year Student Enrichment Program and orientation week events. Once classes began, however, when she wasn’t as busy, she started to feel homesick.

Mena alleviated her homesickness by regularly getting together with her close friends.

“I would also talk to my friends about [homesickness], and they would feel the same way,” Mena said. “We would have movie nights and get dinner together almost every night. For me, that helped: having a little family structure with friends.”

While spending time with friends can lessen the intensity of missing home, sometimes there’s no substitute to actually going back home. Mena was grateful to have spent the entirety of her freshman winter break at home, but this only made coming back for her freshman winter extra difficult. After spending weeks with her family and celebrating holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas in

sunny, warm Texas, the transition back to frigid Hanover wasn’t easy.

Now, at the end of sophomore year, Mena said she stays focused and staves off homesickness by keeping busy and remembering that she’ll be able to go back home again relatively soon.

“I participate in programs, my time is busier [and] my classes are harder, so I have less time to think about home,” Mena said. “I realized it’s not that difficult to be away from home because we [are on the quarter system], so after two-and-a-half months, you get to go back home again.”

Keyser, Cahill and Mena all agreed that homesickness is nothing to be ashamed of. Different people feel homesickness differently and cope differently, too, and while there’s no “right” way to get over feelings of nostalgia for warmer weather or your favorite dish, it’s important to always remember that countless others are going through the same thing.

“If you are feeling homesick, you’re definitely not the only one, and you’re never alone,” Cahill said.

A Guide to Understanding Dartmouth Lingo STORY

Unlike many other incoming firstyear students, when Emma Chiu ’19 arrived at Dartmouth in the fall of 2015, she had previously heard the terms “flitz,” “FSP” and “BEMA” but only because she had watched a YouTube video of Conan O’Brien’s 2011 Commencement address at Dartmouth and heard him namedrop several examples of campus vocabulary.

Chiu, a rising senior, said that the address made her enthusiastic about what her future at Dartmouth would bring.

“It made me excited for the day when I could [re]watch [the speech] and finally be able to understand everything in it,” she said.

According to Kos Twum ’21 Dartmouth lingo appears to be unique to the College’s undergraduate community.

“Only undergraduates seem to be able to relate,” Twum said. “My brother, who studies at [the Geisel School of Medicine] but went to Ohio State for undergrad, seemed to have no idea what I was talking about when I told him to meet me on 3FB [third-floor berry] one day.”

Twum admitted that it took her a couple of academic terms to learn all of Dartmouth’s unique lingo, but she has since integrated phrases like “warm-cut” and “Blobby” into her everyday vocabulary. She has also developed an affinity for several words and phrases. “‘Warm-cut’ is probably my favorite term,” Twum said, referring to the process in which students cut through warm buildings on their way to class in the winter, even if it does not constitute an actual shortcut. “I probably took a ‘warm-cut’ every day during winter term, and everyone does.”

Similarly, although she thinks that it “sounds kind of gross to say,” Twum thinks that the term “Blobby” — a nickname for the ornate lobby of Baker-Berry Library — “is very convenient because everyone knows exactly where it is” in the massive building, which contains more than 1.5 million volumes among 320,000 square feet.

Natalie Vaughan ’20 loves the term “flitz,” which denotes a flirtatious email that students send to one another via blitz, a common nickname for the campus’s Microsoft Outlook email system.

“The idea of sending a flirtatious email is so weird, but cool at the same time,” Vaughan said. “I’ve told friends about it back home and they’ve been shocked.”

Vaughan equally enjoys using the term “fritz,” which she defines as a blitz that students send to their friends or to people with whom they hope to

become friends. She clarified that a “fritz” can consist of anything from a humorous blitz sent to one’s best friend to an email sent to an acquaintance about potentially getting a meal together. “‘Fritz’ is unfortunately not used as often on campus as the word ‘flitz,’ but I’m hoping that it catches on and becomes a big thing,” Vaughan said.

“I send fritzes all the time!”

As an upperclassman, Chiu remembers several terms fondly that were used more frequently during her freshman year at Dartmouth than @ now, a full three years later.

“I like ‘LNC’ for ‘Late Night Collis’ but it’s not used that much,” Chiu said.

“And ‘@now’ has been slowly dying but I hope that it will be brought back.

As a ’19, I remember it being used a lot more my freshman year amongst all students, and I still use it in texts, blitzes and even out loud. People should use it more often.”

Not all terms on campus generate positive feelings and reactions from students, however. For example, Vaughn recalls feeling troubled her freshman year when she first learned about the “Dartmouth X”: a supposed phenomenon in which romantic desirability increases among male students and decreases among female students over the course of four years at the College.

“The ‘Dartmouth X’ surprised me

the most [of all Dartmouth lingo] due to the sheer absurdity of it,” Vaughan said. “When I first heard about it my freshman fall, I became immediately worried about how Dartmouth’s culture perceives men and women because the whole concept is creepy, absurd and bothersome.”

While Vaughan still believes that the concept of the “Dartmouth X” is harmful to campus culture, she has learned over the course of her freshman and sophomore years that the “X,” while well-known in some circles, is not a prevailing orthodoxy among Dartmouth students.

“When you’re young and impressionable, it’s really easy to make a lot of assumptions about gender dynamics on campus when you first hear about the ‘Dartmouth X,’” Vaughan said. “The whole idea is disconcerting, to say the least, as a freshman. But over the course of my time here, I’ve realized that the ‘Dartmouth X,’ while still problematic, does not actually carry that much weight on campus and is more of a reputation rather than a social construct.”

Chiu also feels troubled about the stereotypes that the concept of the “Dartmouth X” creates about student desirability. She noted that her former professor for Psychology 11: “Laboratory in Psychological Science” mentioned to her that several former

students had discussed conducting experiments about perception to test the validity of the concept of “the X.” Chiu added that the concepts of “A-side” / “B-side” and being “facetimey” can be harmful on campus at times, but can be an effective “jab or roast” among friends as well.

Being “facetimey” involves spending time in public, high-traffic locations — such as Novack Café, FFB (First Floor Berry), Collis Student Center and KAF (King Arthur Flour Café) — with the objective of being seen. “A-side” and “B-side” describe social status, with “A-side” as the more desirable title.

Chiu said that being “facetimey” often has a mildly negative connotation, which can be unfair because many students spend time in public spaces on campus. Similarly, “A-side” and “B-side” can “in some ways be problematic” because they can connote “top-tier-ness or social capital” among student groups beyond the Greek system.

However, Chiu acknowledged, both terms can be humorous to use among friends because “when you’re using it ironically … it’s very selfaware.”

Overall, Vaughan believes that, even though Dartmouth’s array of unique terminology poses benefits and problems on campus, it ultimately

reflects the College’s character.

“These terms are indicative of Dartmouth’s isolation because they [comprise] an inherent and obvious development given the school’s geographic location,” Vaughn said.

“At the same time, [Dartmouth lingo] highlights the sense of community at the school and makes you feel part of a strong community.”

Recognizing that the assortment of idiosyncratic terms on campus can be puzzling for incoming freshmen, Chiu, Twum and Vaughan all encourage first-year students to ask upperclassmen if any terms confuse them.

“Don’t be afraid to ask if you don’t know what something means,” Chiu said. “Also, I think [lingo can be] fun to use, but don’t feel like you have to overdo it either.”

Twum said that Dartmouth’s unique terminology will eventually come naturally to students, so they absolutely should not obsess over it.

“My biggest advice [for incoming freshmen] is to avoid getting hung [up] about terms, because no one will make fun of you for using the wrong lingo,” Twum said. “Everything, including Dartmouth’s lingo, will come naturally by spring term — and probably before then.”

Often seen joking around with the staff, Ashley Francisco ’21 is a Hop regular and advises people to make the most of their ordering experience.

“It’s not hard to be nice,” Francisco said.

“The staff members are people too: talk to them, make them laugh and maybe you’ll even get some extra fries in return.”

One of the Hop’s hidden gems? Its new salad bar. Come here if you want a lighter option and choose from their premade selections, or even make your own! But ensure that you have enough Dining Dollars to spend before you tack on some fruit to that healthy post-gym meal.

Novack is a fourth, and slightly more controversial, option. Located in the basement of Baker-Berry Library, it offers a convenient selection of pre-made sandwiches, bagels, snack foods and beverages. Students often grab a quick on-the-go meal here before or in between classes.

Novack’s generous operating hours make it an excellent location for a late night study snack or early morning coffee.

And finally, nestled in a nook of Baker-Berry Library is the last dining area on our list, KAF, which is renowned for its coffee and pastries.

Though not affiliated with DDS, KAF might be one of the most popular dining options on campus, evidenced by the lines that extend far out into the hallways of the library.

KAF does not accept meal swipes, so pay for things here with Dining Dollars. Some iconic drinks include chocolate milk with a shot of espresso, iced chai and cider. KAF also has a daily drink special, which is usually cheaper and made with fun flavor shots. Overall, with its prime location and tasty treats, KAF is the perfect way to cure that mid-afternoon study slump.

So, as you can now see, figuring out what to eat should be the least of your worries in your transition to college. We have more food here (and even more ways of ordering said food) than you could ever imagine. Stay hungry, Dartmouth.

Welcome to Dartmouth — where just over 4,000 school presidents, team captains, valedictorians and award-winners all across the world have been plucked, pooled together and made to live in the small woods of New Hampshire. Seventy-nine percent of students consider themselves happy, 100 percent of students have these types of interactions on a daily basis and 0 percent of students put the time and thought into crafting these monotonous one-word answers.

Great. ’22s, don’t worry so soon. Dartmouth loves its first-years. You will never feel more loved in your four years at this school than you will now. For the first few months, upperclassmen will be eager to offer you advice on anything and everything. The College and faculty will seemingly have office hours 24/7. The Class of 1953 Commons will be really good. When you look around, everyone will be smiling, chatting with friends and playing soccer on the Green. Everything will appear to be perfect.

Everyone will appear happy. This is what I hope to talk about: underneath the waves and smiles, everyone has problems. We just don’t like to talk about them.

When you look around, you can’t help but compare yourself to your classmates. Everyone enters Dartmouth with a laundry list of accomplishments tacked to their names and leaves the school with even more. Everyone appears to be on top of their grades, involved in hundreds of activities and maintaining immaculate social lives — all the while making it look effortless. ’53 Commons comes from a supplier known as Performance Foodservice in Springfield, Massachusetts. Apart from that company, ’53 Commons also sources from UNFI, an organic food supplier in Boston, as well as local farms such as Edgewater Farms. In total, Dartmouth Dining Services spends around $8.5 million each year on food supplies, according to DDS director Jon Plodzik.

While students consume the breakfast products, the chefs behind the counter are both supplying fresh stocks of breakfast food and preparing raw ingredients for lunch. While some products like chicken nuggets, fries and various vegetarian patties arrive at ’53 Commons from a supplier already prepared, a majority of the larger dishes, especially at the Ma Thayer’s Station start off as original recipes.

Chefs use a software known as Computrition to ensure that recipes are scaled up properly to account for the large demands of the dining hall. Each product offered by ’53 Commons has a Computrition page that explains the exact ingredients and methods for preparing the dishes.

Also, Plodzik hopes to increase students’ incentive to eat at ’53 Commons by increasing the number of swipes available to students and by eliminating the time gaps between meal periods. The new Ivy Standard meal plan, which Plodzik considers a stepping stone to unlimited swipes, allows incoming

students to access the dining hall during every meal period and still have funds to purchase food during the “late night” meal period.

While some may claim that this meal plan limits students to predominantly eat at ’53 Commons, Plodzik instead claims that the meal plan is a way to combat inequality between students.

“It’s an equalizer, so to speak, to guarantee that everybody, regardless of economic means, has

the ability to eat,” Plodzik said.

All these policies aim to create a different kind of culture in ’53 Commons, one which emphasizes the ability for students to sit down, break bread with friends and enjoy the meal without having to worry about other stresses.

“We want people to take a couple moments every day and kind of connect with the world around him, connect with people,” Plodzik said.

“And ’53 is a perfect opportunity.”

Students explore their interests through research B y anindu rentala The Dartmouth Staff

Dartmouth undergraduates are innovating surgical procedures, interviewing the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and investigating Dartmouth’s historical relationship with queer communities on campus.

These are only some of the exciting ways students have engaged in undergraduate research. Colleges often label themselves as liberal arts colleges or research universities, but Dartmouth resides in the middle ground of these two categories.

Dartmouth values undergraduate research highly, allocating millions from the endowment and currentuse funding annually to supporting student projects.

“In the classroom, it can seem like the professor has the answers and the students are trying to figure them out,” said Margaret Funnell, assistant dean of faculty for undergraduate research.

“When students are doing research, they form a rich, one-on-one relationship with the professor in a collaborative effort to create knowledge and hone critical thinking skills.”

In that sense, undergraduate research is key to the liberal arts mission of the College, and students often get the opportunity to participate meaningfully in cuttingedge research.

Nishi Jain ’21 and Megan Zhou ’21 both arrived on campus with some research experience from high school and knew they wanted to conduct further research at Dartmouth. Through Dartmouth’s Women in Science Project, Jain and Zhou were connected with research projects led by Dartmouth professors.

As early as their freshman winter, Jain and Zhou were heading to the lab for three-hour blocks at least three times a week.

“WISP recommends students do six to eight hours of work on their project per week, but depending on the project students will dedicate more or less time,” Zhou said.

Jain’s project continued into the spring and had remarkable results.

Working alongside engineering professor Ryan Halter, Jain researched dental surgery procedure. They found that a significant proportion of oral surgeries produce permanent dental damage. Jain helped develop a technique that will produce a warning signal to notify surgeons two millimeters before they accidentally drill into bone.

“Two millimeters is incredibly significant in the surgical context,” Jain said.

Next year, Halter’s team, Jain included, will work to optimize the technique and get an even earlier warning signal before they present it to hospitals. Jain is optimistic that

This series of articles prompted a flurry of discussion, with each column garnering support and opposition. Sampugnaro wrote in her piece that she hopes that other controversial issues will be brought into open, campus-wide conversation, as with this issue, with students listening to each others’ views in order to create a rich discussion.

solidarity with survivors of sexual assault. At the event, which was not affiliated with any specific student organizations, three students addressed the crowd of 80 people in attendance.

According to federal data, the College ranked third in the United States for reported rapes in 2014 with 42.

Can you tell me about that preparation process?

AP: Obviously, it involved a lot of running. But it’s also all about being a good teammate, even when you’re not necessarily there to score a point. It’s about showing up and being supportive. As a freshman, I went to a lot of meets when I wasn’t competing just to cheer the team on. I remember going to one competition on Halloween my freshman year dressed as a snake, and I sat next to a boy from Brown who was dressed up as the burger king. We just screamed in the stands to support of our teams.

If you could do your freshman year over again, what would you do differently?

AP: I really wouldn’t do all that much differently. Every year you spend at Dartmouth becomes a part of who you are when you graduate — going through four years of Dartmouth is like cooking in a crock-pot. Freshman year is like the onions that you throw into the pot first. You can add other ingredients on top, but when you’re done cooking, the onions

will still be there as part of the dish. I went to parties a lot during my freshman year, and sure, you could say that maybe I should have spent more time training. But I met my husband at a party, and that wouldn’t have happened for me if I hadn’t gone out.

Do you have any advice for freshmen looking to make the most of their interactions with their peers in college?

AP: Definitely be true to who you are. Actively be yourself. Be kind, and people will take the time to get to know you. It’s just like going to camp and meeting new people. Those connections will just form naturally. If you spend your four years living in the moment, you’ll find people who share your interests. It’s also really important to find a mentor — a professor or an older student who’s willing to guide you. Lastly, I’ll add that you don’t get what you don’t ask for. I ended up getting funding to perform plays in parks across New York City, and, yeah, that might sound ridiculous. But I asked for it, and I got it.

Our campus has seen an increase in student demand for mental health resources.

“The Call to Lead” capital campaign allocates $17 million to supporting student mental health resources. How is SA working to improve the quality and expansiveness of our mental health resources?

MW: One thing we’re trying to work on for next year is Stress Busters, which is modeled off of Columbia’s program that provides free neck and back rubs to students. It’s a really cool way to get students involved in supporting other students to relieve anxiety. We’re also talking about setting up office hours for next year

in spaces that everyone has access to, like Collis common ground or Occom Commons, where we can discuss mental health resources on campus.

The College introduced six new housing communities in 2015. With the house system still in its early years, how do you plan to address student concerns with how the system was rolled out and work to improve the undergraduate living experience?

MW: There’s a lot of pushback when it comes to school money being spent on free trips and merchandise for the house communities, since so many students only go to events for the free stuff without necessarily engaging in the event. And there’s

concerns about why money is going to these free events and gear and not elsewhere. The question is how we find a way to blend those social experiences into academic experiences that are related to campus, so students feel like their money is going somewhere where they would prefer it to go. If there was more transparency surrounding the houses’ yearly budgets, that would help because students would be able to have their voices be heard.

NK: Going off on that, there are a lot of programming opportunities. We can advertise the fact that the house systems have a lot of usable money.

We’re thinking of having spaces in the House communities where you can go for meals, like at other universities. Most of the houses

have barbecues or free dinners which allow students to take a break from their meal plans. We can also work with the house professors to come up with a system where a House community space can be a safe place to be, and make that a viable system for student security on campus. The house professors are really passionate about continuing to discuss these ideas in the Fall.

What power does SA really have on campus, and why should ‘22s want to get involved?

MW: Year to year, the impact that [SA] has can change dependent on who’s in power. We are urging students to join SA because we know what we’re trying to do on campus next year, and we’re confident in our abilities to talk to the right

people, to book rooms, to provide funding, to co-sponsor and promote all these different events. We want to capitalize on SA’s legacy of collaboration with student groups and administration … and bring younger students in, so once they understand what SA can do, they want to keep that momentum going.

NK: One piece of advice that Ian Sullivan ’18, the past president, gave us, was to incorporate whoever is interested in SA, not just those who ran and got voted for. So, if you’re interested in really getting involved with assembly, come along to our meetings and have your voice be heard.

At the time that I am writing this, I am in Rio de Janeiro — far away from Dartmouth, both physically and mentally.

I’m living in Tabajaras, a favela in Copacabana that is run by a cartel with just three golden rules: do not rape, do not steal, do not kill. Break one, and the last remnants of you will be your ashes scattered over a mountaintop.

As I walked up the hills into Tabajaras for the first time, I saw dusty abandoned cars with flat tires lining the side of the road, teenage boys walking by with machine guns, scooters passing by practically grazing my ankles and colorful graffiti art on crumbling walls. I saw a policeman lounging on a chair on the street, feigning to keep the peace, but after passing him I am told to never speak to or even look at the police in the favela or risk falling out of the cartel’s good graces. I was told to erase any preconceived notions of what life should be — because here, it’s different.

When we veered off to a narrow and steep road, we were greeted by beautiful, laughing children babbling away in Portuguese, a puppy in one child’s arms and a piece of cake in the hands of another. These were the kids who I would be teaching for the next few weeks with a program called Project Favela. In a matter of hours, I learned that behind their rambunctious energy and big smiles full of teeth, the world had not been kind to them.

Prior to my time in Rio, I spent six weeks in New York City, where fate brought me to live with two women who managed to shake the ground under my feet. The three of us were all in different places in our lives — Catherine was a lifelong New Yorker in her mid-fifties, Meriem a 33-year-old investment banker turned energy healer from Morocco. They never failed to remind me how much life there is for me to live and how much power I have to shape my present and future. Both highly spiritual and mindful, they taught me that the finer things in life are found inside our minds — and when you tune into yourself, you tune into everything and everyone around you.

These were lessons I had been learning throughout my Dartmouth experience that became far clearer to me during my time away from campus. Our time at Dartmouth should empower us to realize the potential to shape our lives by encouraging us to cultivate a strong sense of self-awareness and empathy — an understanding of who we are in the world and how we relate to one another.

Dartmouth is, whether for better or for worse, a bubble. Within one square mile, there exists a language and a culture unto itself. We have our own initiations, rites of passage, cultural garb, slang and subcultures — it is as beautifully unique as it is insulating. This bubble will immerse you and it will challenge you, but how you bend under pressure is up to you.

In a place as niche as Dartmouth, it can be easier to morph into a version of the status quo than it is to grow into yourself.

Whatever you do here, I hope you choose to be yourself. You are not here to have your narrative written for you —there is no narrative that will do you justice unless you create it for yourself. Being a part of something bigger does not have to come at the price of your authenticity and autonomy.

The best armor you can wear is a deep desire to continue developing an understanding of yourself. On my first day of class with the kids in Tabajaras, we did an exercise where we asked them questions.“What is your biggest dream?”

“What is your biggest fear?” “What makes you laugh?” “What makes you cry?”

We had them write their answers down, and one by one they presented them to each other. Scott, the director of the project, explained how incredibly therapeutic and powerful this exercise was for them, whether they realized it or not. No one in these children’s lives cares about who they want to be when they grow up or what they like or dislike. They almost never leave the favela, nor are they encouraged to pursue or even imagine a life outside of it. They mature without any sense of self-awareness, and asking them these questions allows them to entertain the idea that they are their own person with their own dreams, feelings, fears and desires. Cultivating a sense of self in these children is one of the most effective forms of inoculation against the gravity of the favela, so that they can stand a chance at creating a reality outside of it.

The kids in the favela did not choose their reality, nor are they given the option to experience anything different at this point in their lives. It isn’t just that the “grass is greener” where we stand — the soil beneath our feet is nurtured, fertilized, watered and protected. No matter where you are in your D-Plan, whether you are on campus, studying abroad or on an off term, this is the time to ask yourself what your dreams are, what your fears are, what makes you laugh and what makes you cry.

Stay skeptical. Ask yourself why you make the decisions you make, why you care about the things you care about and whether it is you or the hive mind that is writing your story.

The story of this institution is a complicated one that has evolved drastically over the last couple of centuries as a result of the people who thwarted the existing narrative and chose to write their own stories instead. By acting out of self-awareness, they bred a newfound empathy into the institution that opened doors for identities that had never been welcomed before.

Change is the product of being discontent, and then choosing to move forward on your own compass rather than succumbing to the collective consciousness. It is not Dartmouth who makes us, but rather those who love Dartmouth and call her home that make her who she is.

Flower said.

Flower said that both programs were invaluable to her Dartmouth experience, but she had different takeaways from each. Flower said that her LSA, for instance, helped her step out of her comfort zone and learn how to struggle at things that she had always been good at, such as reading and writing. Flower said the benefits from her time in Barcelona were “less academically tangible” than what she got out of the government FSP two terms later.

F lower commented how encouraging the Dartmouth community is regarding studying abroad and how it contributes to the culture of Dartmouth as a whole.

“The fact that so many students go abroad encourages even more people to study abroad,” Flower said. “It’s incredibly valuable in terms of learning, in terms of getting new experiences, and in terms of meeting new people.”

Carey said that his own study abroad experience in Bolivia as an undergraduate shaped the trajectory of his career, including influencing his decision to go to graduate school and pursue his current studies in comparative politics. “[Studying abroad] has the opportunity to blow your mind in ways that regular classroom stuff doesn’t necessarily have the capacity to do, and gives you perspectives that you never would have gathered otherwise,” Carey said.

DOC explores new strategies to reduce carbon footprint

This allows students to make houses more fuel efficient so that the DOC is able to collect those fuel efficiency savings and count them toward offsetting the emissions that it produces, Byrd said.

on expeditions, establishing water bottle fill stations across campus and hosting a reused gear sale event — an effort spearheaded by the spring 2018 DOC president, Laura Hutchinson ’19.

Hutchinson designed and executed the fall reused gear sale with DOC directorate members beginning in the fall of 2017, she said.

“There are a lot of emissions associated with producing brand new equipment, and coming into First-Year Trips students buy a lot of brand new, shiny gear but don’t end up using it during the four years at Dartmouth,” said Hutchinson. “So in that way, we can contribute to offsetting our carbon impact.”

Hutchinson added that reselling the gear at low prices helps lower the financial barriers for students trying to obtain outdoor gear.

While many of the DOC’s sustainability efforts have been spearheaded in recent years, the Environmental Studies Division has been in existence since 1969.

Hutchinson identified the DOC Environmental Studies Division as the club’s oldest sustainability effort, which provides a grant of $1,000 every term to a student or a group of students who are pursuing a sustainability-related project on campus. According to Hutchinson, past recipients of this award include Divest Dartmouth and the Farm Club.

Past recipients of the DOC ESD grant include individuals such as Madison Sabol ’18. Sabol successfully created and implemented the ongoing Green2Go program with Dartmouth Dining Services, which provides access to reusable food

takeout containers at mealtimes.

According to Byrd, while new ideas about achieving increased sustainability are continuously discussed within the DOC, there are always challenges associated with the feasibility of implementing these ideas. For example, Byrd had proposed an idea to retrofit DOC van fuel with Foco cooking oil, but quickly realized that this idea was not realistic due to the fact that cooking oil would freeze in the low temperatures of Hanover winters, as well as the inefficiency of cooking oil as a fuel source. While the Big Green Bus DOC initiative of 2005 was overall successful, similar challenges of feasibility like cooking oil fuel inefficiency caused many bus breakdowns, Byrd added.

Hutchinson said that she is currently in conversation with a nonprofit called Protect Our Winters, an environmental advocacy group that “leverages” people who enjoy going outdoors to act on climate change and “become more involved in politics.” She said that the advocacy group seems interested in coming to Dartmouth to talk about the intersection between outdoor recreations and climate advocacy and sustainability.

Brady said that he plans to support sustainability efforts that have recently been put in place like those of Byrd and Hutchinson.

“You don’t really need an official position to make change within the club or get something really cool done,” Brady said. “People who are in various positions, whether it’s a sub-club head or directorate member, are really willing and excited about others being passionate about their sustainability projects.”

At the end of each academic year, The Dartmouth’s sports section puts up players to be voted upon by the student body as the best of the best.

In this year’s The D Sports Awards, five of the top rookies, five of the top female athletes and five of the top male athletes were pitted against each other. The winners emerged only after a popular vote by members of the Dartmouth community. The D is happy to announce the following athletes as the winners of this year’s awards.

Rookie of the Year

Katharine Ogden ’21 of the women’s Nordic skiing team is The Dartmouth’s Rookie of the Year.

Ogden received 34.6 percent of the 445 votes placed from May 21 to May 23. During the 2018 NCAA Skiing Championships, Ogden took not one, but two national titles home in a single year — something a Big Green skier has not done in 56 years — and was also the first woman ever to win a cross-country race for the Big Green. Ogden swept the NCAA women Nordic races, finishing the 5K Classic 46.9 seconds ahead of the nearest racer, and winning the 15K Freestyle with a 37.6 second buffer. With Ogden’s contributions, the Big Green maintained its position in third place with 448.5 points, its best finish in seven years, and won four individual events at the NCAA Championships for just the second time ever. Ogden’s impressive showing this year was affirmed when she was named to the Women’s All-East First Team and also earned the title of EISA Women’s Nordic Rookie of the Year and Women’s Classic Leader.

Cha’Mia Rothwell ’20 currently holds four school records.

Cha’Mia Rothwell ’20 of the women’s track and field team is The Dartmouth’s Female of Athlete of the Year.

Rothwell received 49.2 percent of the 445 votes placed from May 21 to May 23. Rothwell currently has four school records: 60-meter dash (7.45 seconds), 60-meter hurdles (8.28 seconds), long jump (20 feet, 7 inches) and 100-meter hurdles (13.24 seconds). Rothwell was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer for the second year in a row during the Women’s Indoor Ivy League Championships, as well as to the First Team All-Ivy for the 60-meter hurdles and long jump and to the Second Team All-Ivy for the 200-meter dash. For the outdoor season, Rothwell was named to the First Team All-Ivy for the 100-meter hurdles and Second-Team All-Ivy for the long jump. Formerly, Rothwell was also The Dartmouth’s 2016-17 Rookie of the Year.

What does it mean to you to be recognized by our readers as the Female Athlete of the year?

CR: Obviously, very encouraging and

What do you think contributed to your even more dominant performance?

CR: I think my season last year was pretty wild and shocked a lot of people because I was a freshman, and so when you have that great of a season, the bullseye kind of gets a little bigger because people expect for you to either fall off or get better. So I think I came in and wanted to prove that I could keep up that level of competition. There wasn’t really any change in the way I approached my training.

What is your goal moving forward into next season and for the rest of your Dartmouth career?

CR: Next season is for sure Indoor Nationals and Outdoor Nationals.

I want to get to both of those. I was first spot out of long-jump for Indoor Nationals this season, which was kind of a bummer but that is definitely high on the list of next year’s priorities.

What are you looking forward to most now that the season is winding down?

CR: I think time to recover. Track season can be really long but our recovery is just as important, so I’ll obviously still be training, but it is a really nice opportunity to just wind things down a little bit and bring it back a couple notches and building up once again once we start moving into the fall preseason.

Tanguy Nef ’20 of the men’s alpine skiing team is The Dartmouth’s Male of Athlete of the Year.

Nef received 36.4 percent of the 445 votes placed from May 21 to May 23. This season, Nef was named to the All-American First Team after finishing first in the men’s slalom at NCAA Championships. He became the first Dartmouth slalom champion since Karl Johnson in 2006 and is also the first Dartmouth skier to be awarded All-American honors in both the slalom and giant slalom since 2011.

What does it mean to you to be recognized by our readers as the Male Athlete of the year?

TN: It’s a little bit of a surprise. I wouldn’t think of myself as a popularity figure on campus, but it’s also very valorizing. It makes me happy that people do think that, not just the athletic department but also students all around.

What does it mean to you this year to have walked away with the NCAA Slalom title and for

Dartmouth Skiing to walk away overall in third place?

TN: It was definitely a great feeling on the personal level, because I came to college with a goal to definitely win NCAAs at some point. I didn’t know if that was going to be possible or anything. I had the chance to experience that my first year; and it didn’t go as expected. This year, I knew that I kind of had a shot and being able to do what you want to do is very valorizing, it’s a great feeling. We did win the overall title for men’s alpine, and in the women’s alpine they didn’t do as well as they wanted to, but it’s just how skiing goes — it can go either way. It can go super well because everything clicks, but it can also go really bad in a split second.

It was definitely fun being there with all of the people and receiving all of the support.

What do you think contributed to your dominant performance this season?

TN: I like to think of different pillars that support me. I look at it like a table with four legs, so if you lose one you have three more so the table can still hold, but if you lose one more it is basically down. These four are like: friendships and relationships, school, sports and overall well-being. I think I really managed to have all these four working together to make myself not too worried with my performances. I was always able to just like look back at it with a different perspective based on my results and not take it too personally.

I remember that second run when I won NCAAs, at the start I was like I can’t

really lose anything. Like it matters but it doesn’t matter. It’s not about winning, it’s about how you get to the point. At this point, you don’t have to think about what you have to do like either you have it or you don’t. Being able to have that confidence was definitely key, I think, to a lot of the successes that I’ve had this season and I hope to carry it along next season.

What is your goal moving forward into next season and for the rest of your Dartmouth career?

TN: There is still a big question mark, because logically the next step would be to perform at the World Cup level, and then World Championships and the Olympics. I also want to get most out of my Dartmouth experience and not just take one term a year like some skiers do, so it’s kind of balancing these two goals without compromising any of them. That will definitely be the tricky part and for next season, right now, I’m planning to come back in the winter, but who knows what is going to come up. If I have a shot to do well in the World Cup, I might choose to do that instead, at least for a season, just give it a shot and see how it goes. I could also definitely see myself being here and having a different focus and being less on the Carnival circuit. It is a bit uncertain at this point, but I think the most important is that I want to get most out of my Dartmouth experience because it is a great experience and as I said, it’s all about the balance.
