The clashing patterns in the room blasted time out of sequence. Lulled by bad television programs, minutes stretched into hours. He rejected a call and decided to dream. But dreams don’t come when you call them. They do as they please. When this one finally drifted toward him, the present blended into a high-frequency version of some turbulent past. There were random anecdotes, a montage of messed-up, discordant rhythms; underscored with shreds of conversation he didn’t recognize or remember. Pictures, the kind

you want to look at forever, or into which you might subtly slip – a guest at the party, a face in the crowd. His inner eye was blinded by the flashing of strobe lights, riotous colors. On the other side, nothing new was waiting; but here he felt alive, though this life wasn’t his. The space between, trying to hold onto a moment just out of reach; words meant to last, but the order broken. He awoke at dawn to an avalanche of messages, millions of neon bright moons turning back into screens.

To an outside observer, the building on Lierenfelder Straße 39 might seem rather insignificant — like just another plain brick house in the commercial area of Düsseldorf. But looks are deceiving: Concealed behind the doors of this building is not just one of the city’s biggest artists’ studio space, but there are also hidden treasures like the VAN HORN Schaulager.

Here, I’m catching a glimpse inside the mind of the fascinating artist Jan Albers.

taking a deconstructive-reconstructive approach. Breaking points become fuel to course correct, Jan Albers imposes order on the chaos.

“For an artwork to become exceptional, disasters are sometimes useful.” Upon suggesting there’s a specific radical potential in disruptive forces, Jan Albers casually takes a sip of rhubarb spritzer.

Laid-back and self-confident, he sits on top of a wooden table that adorns the VAN HORN Schaulager — above him, a Markus Karstieß mobile gently twirles in the breeze. With his mysterious demeanor, alert eyes, and gentle voice, it’s easy to see how Jan Albers captivates his audience. Flashing a sly smile, he goes on to say that his “artistic opportunities always arise in borderline situations”, when seeds of doubt begin to surface. To him, being stuck doesn’t give cause for despair, but rather provides an incentive to move forward: “I once jumped into a not-so-great work made from cardboard and then it started going places”. In his creative process, maintaining a level of flexibility and a willingness to take action provides Jan Albers with the space necessary to move beyond a normative artistic vision. By accumulating ideas progressively and

The Wuppertal-born, Düsseldorf-based artist (*1971) has been known to experiment and challenge himself for over 20 years. His works, of an obviously conceptual nature, upend traditional norms in the fields of visual art to incite strong reactions in spectators. Through a free handling of formal disciplines, he seamlessly blends painting and sculpture into bold, arresting compositions that balance miraculously between geometric, minimal, and biomorphic abstraction as well as expressionism.

In other words, it’s difficult to label the artist in any meaningful way: Jan Albers has no typical artistic style per se, but a high recognition factor nonetheless.

In a moment of awe at the glory of what Jan Albers affectionately calls a “chainsaw massacre”, one of his large-scale wall works inside the VAN HORN Schaulager immediately leaves an overwhelming impression. Like many of the artist’s pieces, it’s composed of a mixed bag of materials: Polystrene, wood, and spray paint, complete with an acrylic glass box. “cuttingEdgEs” has an otherworldly appearance reminiscent of a lunar landscape, depicted in different shades of grey. Its compelling surface topography is the result of Jan Albers’s manual labour with one of his favourite sculpting tools: The chainsaw. In a typically expressionist gesture, he deliberately uses its destructive capability to provoke accidents and mistakes. Then, when other artists might be ready to throw in the towel, he chooses to conquer (self-induced) frustration by

layering techniques upon one another, he breaks through thought patterns, gains fresh perspectives, and finds new approaches — even when the situation seems hopeless.

A small anecdote goes to show how Jan Albers makes the most of whatever life throws at him. One time, he was working on an “apocalyptic landscape” in his studio, using a corrosive liquid to etch away polystyrene. When, hours later, he blew away of a piece of fluff, suddenly there was an explosion.

The polystyrene, a highly combustible material, caught fire and produced dark smoke which quickly started to spread across the artist’s studio. Seized with panic, Jan Albers teared off his mask and ran into the bathroom, where he filled a bucket with water to put out the fire. In the (literal) heat of the moment, it slipped his mind that he had a fire extinguisher ready for usage. Two buckets of water later, Jan Albers was able to bring the fire under control — at this point, his studio was pitch-black. Then came the fire fighters: “Are you crazy?”, they asked the artist, trying to talk some sense into him. “You could have easily suffocated in the smoke”. After a night in the hospital with an oxygen mask, Jan Albers began to pick up the pieces by renovating his studio and reworking the damaged artwork with layers of spray paint. “heLLoheLL” was completed just a few days later. “I don’t even have this much misfortune up my sleeve, but somehow, turning the work around wasn’t a problem”, the artist remarks, adding that “a collector of mine bought it without even seeing it”. Needless to say, capitalizing on disaster is a de facto Jan Albers move.

There is something special about the way in which Jan Albers tames his works in a rigorously controlled manner. While at times, the interplay between ruggedness and tenderness only reveals itself at second glance, the “clash of opposites” is an inherent feature of each work that captures the eye one way or another. Jan Albers depicts harmony as a counterpart of disharmony, even if at the core of their association, there’s nothing but contradiction. More than a mere formal characteristic, this tension between fragility and strength also encapsulates the artist’s view of the world: “Humans can be assholes, but also quite exceptional”. Indeed, the duality of human nature — namely, that everyone is capable of right and wrong actions — is no secret. An attentive observer, Jan Albers channels this complex coexistence between goodness and evilness into his works. “Don’t get me wrong: I’m not an esoteric”, he says and laughs. “But, quite frankly, my works serve as a tool for selfanalysis and understanding the world”.

As such, the art of Jan Albers illustrates, sometimes subtly and sometimes rebelliously, the essence of human nature.

The son of missionaries, Jan Albers grew up in Namibia in the 1970s before returning to Germany. Experiences of the artist’s early childhood certainly extended into his adulthood: “When I’m working in the studio, I sometimes get flashbacks”, he says and describes a situation in which his

godfather, a member of the South West African People’s Organisation (SWAPO), was arrested in broad daylight. In reaction to such memories, Jan Albers created twisted steel pipe works like “Black Nelson bender”, which conjures up images of exclusion fences, and “Black magic”, a series of perforated crayon drawings depicting human rights badges. Namibia’s war of independence and South Africa’s epic landscapes are among the many bio­graphical elements that the artist makes frequent reference to in his works.

Intimate and revealing, the art of Jan Albers elicits feelings of unease and discomfort, but also overpowering joy.

When reflecting on his early stages as an artist, Jan Albers emphasizes that working at the Gallery Fischer in Düsseldorf impacted on him just as much as his studies at the Kunstakademie: “It was an education on its own”. Seeing the confident precision with which artists like Bruce Nauman, Mario Merz, and Carl Andre handled their work was formative for him because it boosted his

self-esteem, helped with discipline, and showed that working hard leads to results.

The stamina and tenacity Jan Albers appropriated allowed him to overcome one or two dry spells in his career. “Before the turn of the century, Düsseldorf was the eye of the storm”, the artist recalls, pointing out that people from all over world would come to the Rhineland when gallerists like Max Hetzler showed artists such as Christopher Wool.

In the early 2000s, however, Berlin became the place to be. When more or less everyone left for the capital, Jan Albers felt like “a complete idiot — the last artist left in Düsseldorf ”. Faced with the naked truth that his work didn’t strike a significant chord with the peoples of Germany, he began exhibiting beyond national borders, where his art was well-received.

While it’s really a truism to say that ‘nothing great comes easy’, an important lesson that the artist learned was to “just keep going”. The great thing is: Düsseldorf has become a household name in the international art scene again.

What makes the city stand out? “Here, art is appreciated as part of everyday life, no matter if you’re a dentist or a lawyer”, Jan Albers says, quite sincerely.

“This attitude has seeped through all social classes”.

Donja Nasseri The artist Donja Nasseri has not only participated in an impressive amount of national and international group exhibitions, but she has also received several scholarships and prizes.

Upon completing her studies in Dortmund, Istanbul, and Münster, Donja returned to her home town, where she currently studies under Gregor Schneider at the Kunstakademie.

In her works, she deals with photography and its diversity, as well as with multimedia audio-visual installations. Subversively, she uses the respective medium to examine social issues such as morality, convention, and ideology. Her artistic language is characterised by symbolism and traditional forms of expression. Overwhelmed by the daily flood of information, we long for Donja’s work – a return to the essence.

When did you start taking pictures and how did it happen?

I remember feeling super cool and more secure with a camera when I was a child. What hasn’t changed is that I’m still interested in architecture and still life, whereas people are too humdrum for me.

How would you describe your artistic approach?

I would describe it as playful-concrete. On one hand, I'm experimental and try many things, on the other hand, I'm explicit in the sense that I deal with specific topics, for example: Marriage, communication, the human psyche, and so on ...

Besides art: What are your passions?

My friends call me ‘travel agency’ because I really like looking for travel deals. If I wasn’t doing art, I’d probably be working for Lufthansa. My uncle used to be a Lufthansa steward and he would in-line skate to work.

I wanted to be this type of human. Other hobbies of mine include taking walks in supermarkets.

With which artist, dead or alive, would you most like to collaborate with?

My artistic role model has been Francis Alÿs for a long time. From him, I know that one doesn’t require much to create profound art. The work “Making Something Leads to Nothing” from ’97, for example, means a lot to me. It’s comprised of an ice block, which Alÿs pushed through Mexico City for nine hours until it melted completely. Aspects like time, substance, and urban space often play a big role in his works. I’d love to create a piece with Alÿs from nothing. A few years ago, I met him at one of his exhibitions in Vienna, he seemed very down to earth and pleasant.

What impact has the Kunstakadamie Düsseldorf had on you as an artist?

The academy is today’s art world in a miniature format, meaning: Hierarchies are noticeable, the construct of a system is palpable, one experiences freedom and restriction. It’s thrilling, annoying, and confusing — just the thing!

Your three words to describe Düsseldorf are: Overly perfectionistic, creative, sleepy.

Düsseldorf as an artwork: What would it look like?

Already, there are “Rhein I” and “Rhein II” by Andreas Gursky. That’s Düsseldorf as an artwork.

What places in Düsseldorf inspire you as an artist?

The central station and everything around it.

Maribel Nicolás Cabello How did you end up in your current job?

Maribel Nicolás Cabello is someone, who is good at juggling multiple balls at once.

As gallery and show manager of Art Düsseldorf, she makes sure that everything runs smoothly at one of the Rhineland’s biggest fairs for contemporary art. This year in November, for the third time around, the former steel factory complex Areal Böhler will turn into a highlight of the art calendar — an event you don’t want to miss. Gallerists, collectors, directors, dealers, curators, critics, artists and art lovers from all over the world come together here to admire emerging and established art of both regional and international significance.

Maribel Nicolás tells us what lies behind Art Düsseldorf.

During my studies, there was this mandatory internship. With great interest, I read a job advertisement for an internship at the Art Fair Cologne and thereupon applied. Luckily, I was hired. After completing another internship there the following year, I was offered a permanent position as gallery manager. When my predecessor became self-employed with the bar ‘Kassette’ in Oberbilk, I took over show management as well.

The two activities complement each other well because many tasks overlap.

What exactly does your job as gallery and show manager entail?

As gallery manager, I’m responsible for the exhibitors and everything related to their participation. Amongst other things, I take care of logistics, exhibition booths, accommodation, permits, procedures and security.

As the main contact person, my role is basically to support the exhibitors in every respect. In terms of show management, I work on everything that fair visitors perceive consciously and subconsciously: Banners, information signs, cash points, cleaning services, and so on. For smooth workflow, everything needs to be timed perfectly.

Which part of gallery and show management do you enjoy most?

For sure the interaction with exhibitors. You learn a lot through communication, planning, organizing, and assisting. By now, I know many of them well — the relationship is very sincere.

New galleries always join in as well. That’s very exciting!

What are the fair’s highlights this year?

Once again, there’s an emphasis on sculpture that I’m particularly looking forward to. Unfortunately, I can’t reveal any details, but the guest lectures are bound to be a great success again. I’m also thrilled about the ‘rsvp’ section: On show will be very young positions, which were selected by a terrific group of curators, including Marianne Dobner from the mumok in Vienna, Devrim Bayar from WIELS in Brussels, as well as Elisa Linn and Lennart Wolff from KM Temporaer in Berlin.

Why buy art?

For me, it’s quite simple: You should buy art when it’s emotionally moving.

T

The street that was named after him is not love at first, but at second sight. It is not pretty in the conventional sense.

The buildings were constructed after the Second World War and appear quite functional. Until a few years ago the traffic flowed in the direction of the main train station on the eastern part of an elevated road section, that was originally named after Jan Wellem, but that the Düsseldorfers quickly baptised the ‘Tausendfüßler’ (Centipede).

Tourists, international business people and cosplayers, wearing little blue dresses and yellow wigs, strolling across the wide boulevard. On a wooden bench in front of one of the little restaurants, a Japanese man has settled in the lotus position and he smokes. Sitting sheltered under garden parasols, people of all nationalities eat ramen or drink coffee here. Immermannstraße is the main artery of Düsseldorf ’s ‘Little Tokyo’ and it is the place where Germany’s Japanese heart beats the loudest.

At least the business part of it – around 400 Japanese companies are located in the capital of the province NRW. Japanese nurseries, a school and temple are catering for about 8.400 Japanese nationals’ private needs in the Niederkassel area on the southern shores of the Rhine.

The at times six-lane-wide Immermannstraße is lined by tall, shady plane trees.

Broadly speaking, this avenue connects the Kö with the main train station. It was named after Carl Leberecht Immermann, who came to the Rhine area from Magdeburg. From 1827 onwards, he worked as judge at the Regional Court in Düsseldorf, but he also wrote drama, prose and critical pieces of work. In 1832, he founded the Düsseldorf Stadttheater, which he managed until 1837. He was friends with Heinrich Heine and had personal relationships with Goethe and Christian Dietrich Grabbe. He died in Düsseldorf in 1840, which surely must make him a true Rhinelander.

This elevated road, which made construction history in 1962, signified for many Düsseldorfers the arrival of a cultural asset. It was an exhilarating feeling to soar across the city, at eye level with high-rise buildings. The grey structure was decorated with bamboo, palm trees and shade loving staghorn shrubs, which the artist Tita Giese planted in 1980.

They had to be moved in 2012, a year before the ‘Tausendfüßler’ was demolished, which was much to the annoyance of many locals. It did, however, benefit Immermannstraße.

The traffic now disappears from sight through the Kö-Bogen-Tunnel. As part of the regeneration efforts, bicycle lanes as well as broad, bright pavements and an ornamental fountain with public seating have been created. Starting from this newly developed end of the Immermannstraße with the ‘King Fusion’ restaurant, on to the ‘Green Karma’, laced with the spirit of Bali that infuses the fresh salads, wraps and smoothies offered there, all the way down to the Immermannhof which houses the Taiwanese tea house ‘Teamate’, where kids meet for Bubble Tea or to dance, talk, online chat or sing – this is where Asia is at home.

Japanese school kids, Manga fans, people interested in or travelling to Japan can visit two book shops stocked with coursebooks, Manga comics, travel writing, fiction and glossy magazines from Japan.

A special highlight is the exquisite gift shop ‘Kyoto’. Here you can find just about anything, ranging from glass or fine china Sake sets, valuable Japanese kitchen knives to furniture and home decor. Over the boulevard rises the ImmermannTower, which was built in 1955 by Wilhelm Dommel and was originally called ‘Dommelhaus’. In 2010, the ground floor walls were decorated with a mural by the artist Ingeborg Böll. Next to it you can find a branch of the Flingern-based gelateria Nordmanns.

Destinations essential for Japanese business people are situated directly across the road: there are the Japanese Chamber of Commerce, the Japanese Embassy, high standard conference spaces and overnight accommodation at Hotel ‘Nikko’ and, last but not least, a string of karaoke bars. Since the seventies, this multiplex occupies a large part of the Immermannstraße. Its panoramic rooftop spa, which incorporates a swimming pool and a sauna, is also accessible to day visitors. At ‘Yin Yang Wellness’ around the corner on Oststraße, you can find high quality tea from Japan and China or, if you fancy, receive one of the best Asian massages Düsseldorf has to offer.

You can ponder the culinary delights of Japan in its supermarkets and the many little restaurants that are located towards the middle part of Immermannstraße; apart from sushi, Japanese fried or grilled specialties or ramen, the unsurpassable ‘Takumi’ also offers vegetarian dishes.

Even the hamburger restaurant ‘What’s Beef ’ offers Wagyu beef burgers.

‘Takumi’ has most likely contributed to fuelling the current hype about ramen – since 2006 the flagship restaurant ‘Takumi 1’ represents Takumi on Immermannstraße, and has since been complemented by the opening of two other branches, one on Kloster- and one on Oststraße. From here Takumi has expanded internationally over the past couple of years, repeating its success in Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Antwerpen and Barcelona – and there is no end in sight.

Japanese haute cuisine is being served just meters away from Immermannstraße, for example along the Klosterstraße. An all time favourite is ‘Kikaku’, and fine dining can also be had at ‘Yabase’. Michelin-starred and French cuisine inspired Japanese delights are created at ‘Nagaya’. And if you are going to indulge in something exceptionally exquisite you have to visit Nagaya’s subsidiary ‘Yoshi’. This is where you find Japanese food and hospitality “Omotenashi” in its purest form.

We arrive on Friday 6pm at Collenbachstraße 41 to meet Shari Chopra in her charming restaurant, and she is just finishing off the preparations for a catering event taking place later this evening. Whilst we wait in Düsseldorf ’s perhaps most charming courtyard, we are getting into the weekend mood by enjoying the colourful lights and soaking up the incredibly good selection of music.

THE DORF This is a great selection of music, everyone is feeling the good vibes. Is there a particular song that always puts you into a good mood?

SHARI Yes, absolutely. ‘Inner Style’ by Texas. It’s also brilliant to sing to. (She takes her mobile, starts playing the song and we can only agree.)

How did this beautiful restaurant come into existence?

S To be honest, it was just by chance. I wasn’t looking for a restaurant but a prep site for my catering business. I founded the business four years ago and initially used my mother’s kitchen to prepare the food. But with an increasing number of orders, I needed a larger kitchen. This used to be ‘Greenies’, a purely vegan restaurant. The previous owner was from Meerbusch too, and offered me the use of his kitchen, to cook for his restaurant during the day time and for my catering business in the evening. That was not what I had in mind though and shortly after he suggested that I take over the entire business. This is how I came to run an entire restaurant instead of just cooking in a larger kitchen.

That means you took over the entire premises?

S In the courtyard, there was only one table and a bench. Yet, I fell in love with it the moment I had my first cappuccino here. We replanted the entire courtyard and refurbished the interior within two days. We wanted to keep all of the regulars, so we closed on Sunday and had our opening day on Tuesday. Within those two days we painted the entire space, cleaned, assembled the furniture and put a wooden board on top of the bar as I did not yet have enough money for a black board. However, on the morning of our opening day I realised that I had not factored in groceries as part of the refurbishment, which meant that I only had 30.57 Euros on my account. So, I went across the road to Edeka, did a major shop and told the lady at the till that I had forgotten my purse, but would be back in a bit as I was only across the road where I had just taken over the restaurant. It was so embarrassing. All day I cooked like a madwoman and in the evening I was able to pay for my first grocery shop. I had to do this about three times until one day even the bemused owner mentioned it. But I always paid everything in the end and thankfully I don’t have to do things like that anymore. (laughs)

And how did you get involved with cooking?

S I grew up with everyone expressing their emotions through food. It is something quite peaceful. For example, if there was an argument or I made a mess of something, then we reconnected over food without the need for words. Eating is com-

When I was still at school, I used to go to learn how to cook in the afternoons with people like Axel Herrenbrück of ‘Octopussy’ and Sam Keshvari of ‘Ratatouille’ (which has unfortunately closed down since). So I have learned everything I know from well-respected chefs from Düsseldorf. After A-levels I went travelling on and off for seven years and catered, for example, for guests staying in a lodge in Namibia for a couple of months, where I also learned how to hunt and bake. It was a very nice time in my life, but also a very educational one. Later, I worked in a little, exclusive, harbour-side restaurant in Egypt, and after that I ran my own gourmet-burger restaurant in the marina of El Gouna in Egypt. But I only really feel at home in the city I was born in: Düsseldorf. This is why I set up ‘Shari’s Kitchen’ here. Last month, I started renting the premises next door, ‘Shari’s Nebenan’. It will be used for events, however, we are still in the middle of refurbishing works.

Shari’s Kitchen has a personal sound to it — how representative is it?

S I’m following a simple and clear concept. Every day I cook something different, always fresh and vegetarian. And only what I like eating myself. My cooking is characterised by my love of simple food. It’s food with no frills, nothing on the plate that could distract. It is all fresh and made by myself and when it’s gone, it’s gone. Every day there are three different dishes on offer and we never have any leftovers, nothing ever goes in the bin. Should anything be left at all, then the next day’s lunch would be based on that.

Every Tuesday farmer Berrisch from Kaarst supplies me with fruit and vegetables and a surprise seasonal produce on top of that. This is great as you get to deal with a new seasonal produce over and over again. The vegetarian cuisine has a lot of scope. Over 80% of my customers are not actually vegetarian, but just don’t want to eat schnitzels in their lunch break anymore. We eat to refuel, to get our energy levels up, so that we can carry on. It is our fuel and it should taste great.

How do you know when food tastes great?

S Personally, it is silence during a meal that matters to me. During an event, for example, there is a lot of noise, every one is talking over each other — and then the food arrives. Everyone starts at the same time and it all quiets down as people are enjoying the food — and it appears that I have met their expectations and captured the feel. Silence is the greatest compliment.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

S There are quite a number of different sources. I read a lot of cookbooks, but at times I can also be inspired by something on Pinterest. I decide every day afresh what I am going to cook and go where the daily mood takes me.

Are there also dishes you are offering on a more regular basis?

S Yes, for example ‘Shari’s Burger’. Everyone loves that, funnily enough it doesn’t even seem to matter how old the customers are. But there is also spaghetti with avocado-lime pesto, topped with caramelised tomatoes. And then there is a very classic meal, almost a standard German kitchen recipe: mashed peas with ratatouille and kohlrabi-schnitzel. It sounds simple, but it is actually totally yummy and my customers are always happy when it is on the menu.

Could you share with us one of your recipes?

S So, let’s take for example the mashed pea and ratatouille and kohlrabi-schnitzel.

(We accompany Shari into the kitchen and she starts to cut vegetables and begins to heat the pans). We start with the mashed peas. I cut onion and ginger, then fry them until they’re slightly brown. Then, I add the potatoes I prepared earlier and the peas. They have to be really tasty potatoes, I am pointing this out, as many potatoes you get from supermarkets can taste quite watery. I get mine from farmer Berrisch, they are bursting with taste.

I prepare the ratatouille as I go along: a classic mix of courgette, aubergine and peppers — everything cut into chunks, then browned. Then, I add parsley and tomatoes. I have blanched kohlrabi for the schnitzel earlier and have tossed them in flour, egg and classic breading. I actually have added some lemon zest and sea salt to the breading, to add more taste. After that the schnitzels are fried in vegetable oil. Finally, I add some lemon rind and fresh pepper. Finished.

And how about your personal favourite dish?

S My favourite is in fact very simple – fresh taglierini and tomato-sugo – ideally made from the tomatoes my auntie in Langenfeld plants herself — roasted sage and roasted garlic on top together with Parmesan. I actually eat anything, but this is my absolute favourite. When you cook a lot you don’t really feel like eating what you have cooked all day. So this is a dish I keep for myself, for moments like when I sit on my balcony.

So this is something special for the evening, like the perfect end to a good day?

S The perfect evening after work is, in my opinion, when my friends drop by after I close up. Most of them I have known since primary school. We all sit together at the table, sometimes in the courtyard, I make some pasta, so we just sit together sharing a nice Pinot Blanc. It is like family. Sometimes we carry on to visit a local bar, for example to see David at the Squarebar, or we just pop over to the corner shop.

That all sounds fantastic. Is there anything left to dream of?

S It would be amazing to do a boutique style hotel, no more than eight rooms.

It would have to be by the sea. A house full of nooks and crannies just by the beach, every room different from the other, just the best breakfast ever, the kids playing outside… I have no idea yet where this could be — but I know for sure that there is going to be amazing food. But there is no rush.

Off the beaten track but still ver y close to the large shopping mile Flinger Sta ße lies a real Düsseldorf institution in the Ka puzinergasse.

“Pick Up”, a shop with cult sta tus, has been located in this small, cosy alle y since 197 8.

It is par t of Düsseldorf just as much as the Ratinger Hof, the band Die Tot en Hosen, and Altbier. Here, generation s have bought Dr. Martens shoes, second-ha nd clothes, buttons or studs. We met owner Ch ristian Werner to talk about more than 40 yea rs of Düsseldorf Rock’n’Roll history on 25 square meters.

As such, the BBC made a significa nt impact on the fashionable taste and appearance of the emerging Ratinger street punk scene. What is considered a classic punk look today was then already available at the BBC. The way in which the goods reached the old town was adventurous at times. Heiner had the famous striped jeans fabrics printed in Germany.

They were then sewn to pants in Belgium. Quite freq uently, customs officers were surprised at the unus ual freight in the R4 — of course, Heiner himself brou ght everything across the border. As regards Pick Up, there are countless anecdotes like this. They are stories about very different times, without internet and open borders, as well as with an old town that wou ld be scarcely recognizable today.

As one of the first people in Germany, the former shop owner Heiner Hoppe imported Dr. Martens shoes from England. Back in the day, he himself drove to Northamptonshire, the center of the English shoe industry, with an old Renault R4 to buy the hot goods. In the ’70s, the father of these classic shoes, Bill Griggs, helped to load the car before his company turned into a British icon. The sturdy shoes were especially popular with the Düsseldorf punks, just like they were with many other prior and previous subcultures. Therefore, it appeared obvious for Heiner to open Pick Up, his very own shoe shop solely for “Doc’s”.

Pick Up partly came about because Heiner had already gained some experience in the fashion industry. At the young age of 18, the Cologne native opened his first shop in Düsseldorf ’s old town –— at the time, under the name of Best British Clothing (BBC). He got hooked on the Rock-bacillus for the first time when accompanying a tour of the Rolling Stones for a local school newspaper. With BBC, Heiner hit the zeitgeist of the ’70s. The shop wasn’t just the only place in town to buy Doc’s, but also a one-off opportunity to buy leather jackets with rivets or skintight, striped jeans.

What the small shop also wrote histo ry with was pop music and television. There, in the narrow, dark warehouse, in front of countless shoe boxe s and packaging, a TV casting took place in 1993; and not just any, but one that would help a young wom an from Düsseldorf achieve a world career. Heike Mak atsch immediately convinced the makers of the then-em erging music channel Viva with the typical ’90s music chatter.

Rock’n’Roll is also of deep importan ce to Chris. For 14 years, he used to be the bassist of the Nu metal band Cho -Jin. In the ’90s, the music grou p was firmly convinced that they would become rock stars, says Chris with a chuckle during our excitingentertaining conversation about the Pick Up and its history. When, against all odds, his desired career didn’t work out, the sociologist turned to retail. By the way, Cho -Jin’s only album appeared on Goldene Zeit en, the music label of former Toten Hosen drummer Wöl li Rohde. That’s how Pick Up has come full circle: Once a Punk, always a Punk! After an almost 40-year-long Heiner-era, Chris is now at the shop every day; he advi ses, sells, and preserves the very special flair of Pick Up.

Mustard, Altbier (local dark beer) or Sol­ eier (pickled eggs) are just some of the typical specialties to be discovered in Düsseldorf ’s Old Town. It is one of the largest food markets in the world after all. The guided tour “Düsseldorf Food Tour — exploring local treasures” demonstrates the culinary diversity on the Carlsplatz, a former farmers market turned foodie heaven, and beyond. Musicians, artists and other creative minds have been gathering in Düsseldorf ’s Old Town for 50 years, founding bands and influencing each other. Where are the roots of Kraftwerk’s electronic pioneers, where did the Toten Hosen learn their punk ABC — and which DJs do now play in the world-famous Salon des Amateurs?

The pop music tour “The Sound of Düsseldorf ” shows legendary places of pop-cultural significance, clubs and pubs. And along the way the most important songs “Made in Düsseldorf ” are played, of course.

WEHRHAHN-LINIE — ART MEETS ARCHITECTURE IN THE SUBWAY

“Art and 3-D Magic in a German Subway” — That’s how the New York Times described this spectacular subway line in the heart of the city. The design concept originated in an unusual collaboration between artists and engineers.

Each of the six stations reflects the vision of an artist and has a distinctive character, whether picturesque, sculptural, interactive, aural or geometric. The metro tunnel was designed by netzwerkarchitekten and Heike Kluss­ mann, a former student at Düsseldorf ’s renowned Art Academy, and realised as a subterranean space continuum. All of the stations are a photographer’s dream and free of commercial advertising.

URBAN ART WALK — STREET ART AND GRAFFITI IN DÜSSELDORF

Klaus Rosskothen, curator and director of Pretty Portal urban art gallery, invites you to see the city in a new light and discover new places during the Urban Art Walk.

International as well as local artists have created many hidden art venues in the city beyond the white cube.

They combine classical art movements with pop, punk, graffiti or street art, reflecting the thoughts and moods of today. Their works are shown in public spaces, with the city serving as their canvas. A great number of works, including murals, paste-ups and sticker art, can be admired on the two-hour walk.

ANMO ANMO are Anna Friedel and Motoko Dobashi. They met at university in Munich studying art and immediately connected through their shared love for tea. It is therefore not surprising that they opened their own tea shop with adjacent gallery spaces in ‘Little Tokyo’ in Düsseldorf in 2017 and have since been cordially inviting people to join them on their journey through the extraordinary world of specialty tea.

What is the characteristic of a good cup of tea for you?

Motoko When you can feel the power of the leaves, that for me is a sign of good tea.

What does a tea ceremony at ANMO entail?

Anna We try and maintain the established aspects of the traditional tea ceremony — as long as they optimise the taste experience — and give them a contemporary twist by always asking the question ‘What’s next?’.

What is your inspiration?

Anna In every field there is someone who knows more than you do yourself, I find that very inspiring.

On top of that exchange we draw inspiration from research trips, art, books, food, literature and movies.

What are your favourite teas?

Motoko High quality Sencha from Japan, Yancha Rock tea from China.

Anna Pu Erh tea — pressed tea cakes, which ferment over time, similar to wine.

With whom, dead or alive, would you like to go for a beer in Düsseldorf?

Anna Well, as I don’t drink alcohol ... I would say I would have a tea in one of the tiny pubs in the Old Town. What an outrageous sacrilege! In fact, let’s just grab a table and invite people like Xavier Dolan, Tony Leung, Liao Yiwu, Lu Yu, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Byung-Chul Han, Bruce Lee, Agnes Martin, Eva Hesse and Allen Ginsberg.

Motoko About how it all started with ANMO… Anna There would be loads of subjects to discuss, but probably it would be about beauty, truthfulness, democracy, values, courage and time.

Are there any places in Düsseldorf that inspire you in your work?

Motoko There are several places, which have been created by people who deliberately want to showcase their own style. I enjoy being in these kinds of shops, cafés and places as I can feel the character of the individual owner.

Anna Oh, there are quite a lot. Düsseldorf is packed, from my favourite restaurants and cafés to the city’s museums, but also the open spaces near the Rhine and the scenery of the Grafenberger Wald.

When visiting the Bonsai-Werkstatt in Düsseldorf-Hamm, visitors are greeted by a large lilac tree with white umbels that captivate the senses through their enticing scent.

It’s far from a bonsai, but beautiful nevertheless. Those who wander through the open-air environment of the bonsai museum will, by all means, find bonsai-lilac, amongst many other things. It is peaceful here. Birds twitter and the leaves of trees flutter in the wind.

Museum founder Werner M. Busch is a true original. Already his paternal grandmother has her roots in a farm located here. In this special place, Busch founded the Bonsai-Werkstatt 34 years ago to create a meeting point for bonsai enthusiasts. After reading an article about bonsais at the age of 18, the biologist immediately thought: “I have to try this”.

He looked for small plants and trees, then got going. In Germany, there was little information available on the topic but as it is evident here, it all worked out well.

50 young plants made the start; some can still be admired in Hamm today.

On the educational trail of the bonsai museum, visitors learn that bonsais originally come from China, where they flourished in miniature landscapes as early as 200 BC. It was not until 1200 AD that they made their way to Japan, where initially only princes and samurais cultivated them. At the beginning of the 20th century, bonsais finally arrived in Europe.

“You start with a Japanese tree”, explains Busch. For him, it was a Japanese maple.

He soon realized that those who travel from Japan to the Rhine want to see Western species cultivated as bonsai, so he readjusted accordingly. Good for him, seeing that native trees are much easier to take care of after all. Today, a variety of local tree types can be found in the museum and its workshop, including beeches, oaks, junipers, as well as cherry and grabapple trees. Most grow on flat plates, others are planted directly in the ground.

Importantly, a bonsai is much more than a small tree. “It should have the character and look of a very old plant — a veteran”, says Busch. This is why a good bonsai always looks much older than it actually is. To achieve this, the bonsai has to be cut back regularly, as the pruning will allow for stronger branching. If the branch of a tree holds five large leaves, for a bonsai it is 50. Nutrients have to be divided among these many leaves, which is why bonsais remain so small.

Even a wisteria has been turned into a bonsai by Busch. Rescued from a house demolition, it now stands on a gnarled tree trunk from which its typical paleviolet floral clusters hang down.

Some may find it tempting to place a bonsai inside the living room, but even the brightest of all spaces is not bright enough. Indeed, the side of the bonsai which isn’t exposed to light will eventually become stunted. Not only will the leaves become very tender, but the tree will require extra water and be more susceptible to pests. “Trees want the sun”, Busch explains. Hence, bonsais belong outside.

Bonsais make it possible to look at a tree up close. The cycle of the seasons can be witnessed directly through them, which is precisely what fascinates Werner Busch. As a biologist, he is also interested in the animals that live in his small trees.

“Around 1000 animals live in a tree, whereas approximately 20 live in a bonsai.” Birds to not dare to nest in the Bonsai-Werkstatt because there are simply too many people. However, a swarm of bees has settled down here once before.

“I then re-accommodated the bees into a hive”, says the bonsai expert. “I’m a beekeper too”.

Even climate change doesn’t stop at beeches, oaks, lindens or elms in miniature format. “They can’t handle the hot sun”. If the thermometer climbs above 40 degrees centigrade, Busch stretches shade nets over his green protégés to keep them from excessive sweating.

Finally, Werner Busch presents his favourite bonsai, a small pine with a filigreecurved trunk. It’s been his companion since 1988, pruned along Japanese lines with only a few branches. To him this pine bonsai is particularly endearing “because it exudes elegance and lightness”. Werner Busch has long been affected by the rhythm of his bonsais.

By the tranquility they radiate. “You can relax here”, he says. “I don’t need anything else”.

EKTKE STUDIO The accessory and jewellery brand EKTKE STUDIO consists of the sisters Elisa and Theresa Kudlek. The brand name combines the first names and surname of both sisters, completed by the letter “E”. This stylistic device illustrates the character and symmetry of the brand. After their A-levels the two sisters initially followed different career paths. But a similar understanding of aesthetics and a shared sensitivity with regards to materials was a solid foundation for working together. It is important to both of them that their products are contemporary, yet don’t merely follow fads.

In 2017 Elisa and Theresa finally launched EKTKE STUDIO.

How do you divide the work between each other?

Each of us looks after different areas of the business.

Theresa is responsible for the making of our products.

Elisa looks after the business side of things. However, we are both involved in all creative decisions with regards to choice of materials and the visual feel and design of our products.

Where do you find inspiration for your designs?

Frequently, the creative process starts with the actual material. We enjoy experimenting with different materials, combining visually different characteristics and textures and letting this be the inspiration for the design of our products. We do, however, also love the aesthetics and lifestyle of bygone decades, which is why we find inspiration at flea markets and in vintage pieces.

This inspiration is then translated into our own language of form by reduction and abstraction.

What is it like to work together being sisters?

We have had a special connection since early childhood and with EKTKE STUDIO we have made our dream of our own brand a reality. We understand each other without the need for words and share the same understanding of aesthetic. This means when one of us has an idea, the other one immediately understands what it is about. It also helps to share the same kind of humour, especially during stressful times. It is highly enjoyable to experiment together and to create, which takes us back to our childhood. We are very grateful that we have been able to share experiences and support each other. When you experience setbacks you bounce back much easier when it is the two of you and to share success makes it even sweeter.

Elisa, you yourself don’t work or live in Düsseldorf. How do you work together considering the distance and how do you maintain regular communication?

Elisa As we are very close to each other we talk almost every day any way, irrespective of business concerns. We keep each other up to date and discuss things related to running the business. Each of us has areas we work independently in, but we do try to get together as much as possible. It is especially important to meet in person and work together when it comes to the creative development, to choose materials and come up with new ideas.

With whom, dead or alive, would you like to go for an Altbier in Düsseldorf?

Most definitely with our grandma Helga, who is not with us anymore.

What would you talk about?

About everything under the sun. She was a very creative person and she would have liked to see what we are doing nowadays.

Laura Posdziech Originally starting out as a journalist with an interest in sustainable fashion and art, Laura soon switched from observational reporting to actively shaping it. After publishing a book with artists interviews, a major fashion company approached the 32-year-old and offered to take over public relations for them. As a next step, Laura founded her own communications agency called Atelier NAAU. Today, the agency predominantly works with environmentally friendly and ethically responsible brands. Last year, she developed HANDS-ON, an event series, in which creative people, entrepreneurs and strategists provide guests with a new perspective on various sustainable and social topics.

Was there an incisive experience that led you to create the HANDS-ON series?

I have been vegetarian for 17 years and vegan for about 6 years. At some point, I thought about the fact that I care about my diet so much, especially because of my health, but also for environmental and ethical reasons, but in other areas such as cosmetics or clothing I was less resolute. I decided to be much more aware of what I was buying, where it comes from and where it is produced. At that time, however, the topic was not as ubiquitous as it is today and it was rather difficult to find transparent brands and products. Tracking them down was an inspiration for me to focus my communications agency on those issues. And that’s also why I developed HANDS-ON: to promote and make us experience initiatives aiming for sustainability within fashion, design, food, … Sustainability is such a new and dynamic field. HANDS-ON shares both the questions as well as the answers.

How do you think communication works best these days?

Through multiple channels. The new social channels are super important while selected print media or other classic established platforms can still be likewise relevant. It depends on the brand, the topic, the materials, such as video, sound, music the brand works with, the target group, …

What is special nowadays is that you can communicate yourself independently from third parties.

You don’t need to rely on the press. You can make use of your own power through the channels you choose to play yourself. And that’s what I definitely advise as a basis of communication: to be in regular, maybe even in everyday, direct contact with your target group to tell your story yourself in the best way you can on the platforms that are convenient for you.

Do you think there will be a collective rethink in our society at some point, or are we heading for disaster?

I think and hope, there will be a collective rethink. One driving force for a rethink is money.

Many companies still see no way to make sustainability financially attractive. I think as soon as this changes, the world could change radically.

With whom, dead or alive, would you like to go for an Altbier in Düsseldorf?

I would like to go for an Altbier with my boyfriend, because we have never done this before, since I don’t actually drink alcohol. So that would be something special indeed!

What would you talk about?

Because we don’t drink alcohol, it would certainly be a topic how alcohol is represented in our society, but also what kind of craft lies behind making beer or other alcoholic beverages.

StyleAlbum is a concept store in Düsseldorf-Pempelfort.

Sue, the owner, has a great eye and brings together the nicest pieces of collections from various fashion labels, cosmetic and accessory brands. I especially like going to StyleAlbum for Nanushka, Blanche and Nuori. Nanushka and Blanche are sustainable fashion brands, Nuori is a natural skincare brand.

MAEMAE

I discovered Düsseldorf-born and -based label LUSENSA more than 1.500 km away, when I was in Palma de Mallorca.

Back in Düsseldorf, I got in touch with Zornitsa, the founder, straight away. She founded Lusensa in 2017, conscious about what we inhale when we use room spray and scented candles. Lusensa makes room spray and candles from soy wax and all-natural essential oils.

UNWRAPPED STORES I am super happy about the unwrapped stores in Düsseldorf.

They all have a wide range of products. In my opinion, it also makes sense to shop at an unwrapped store spontaneously and without preparation.

You can buy containers there, grab the ones that other customers donate and re-use them afterwards. All unwrapped stores also offer sth. fresh — from coffee to lunch and dinner.

So, that’s another reason to visit an unwrapped store.

What makes the organic oils of the Düsseldorf oil factory so special? On the one hand, it is the selected raw materials – cores and seeds from certified organic cultivation of producers. On the other hand it is the pressing process.

In the spirit of “slow food”, the oil factory has dedicated itself to the gentle “slow production”. Then, the oils are carefully filtered by hand.

SHORT CUT

Nadine Redlich This is a tough one. Trying to describe the subtle type of humour in Nadine Redlich’s illustrations almost seems like a useless effort because it is just not possible to fully grasp all the hidden visual layers or the jokes in between the lines. The cartoonist from Düsseldorf, who studied Communication Design, is a master in wordless communication. At most, she uses a minimal phrase structure to get her message across. Reduced to a small range of colours, contoured by a thin pen line, the illustrations are as simple and therefore as good as they can get. Renowned publications like Die Zeit, Süddeutsche Zeitung and The New York Times regularly let Nadine add some extra spice and inevitably smiles to their articles. In combination with the topics discussed, they unfold their full potential and function like a shortcut to their essence, without being any less meaningful.

Would you agree with the mantra “less is more” and why/why not?

Absolutely, I love working within self-set boundaries and the challenge to find a solution on how to communicate an idea the best way within that restriction. Besides, I have an obsessive tendency, so if I wouldn’t limit myself, I wouldn’t have finished any of my books.

What do you do if you lack inspiration/ideas get stuck?

And how do you deal with working under pressure?

If there’s a lack of inspiration, I procrastinate until the pressure is unbearable and I have to produce results.

So far this has always worked out for me, but every time I think: You’ve totally fucked it up this time, I’m not going to come up with anything.

Can it sometimes be hard to be funny?

No, not in my drawings. The more depressed I am, the funnier the characters get.

How important do you find (black) humour when communicating with people? What do you think is your genre’s “superpower”?

I find humour and colourful drawings are the best way for dealing with difficult topics, without depressing anyone. If you would cut out the jokes and colour in my drawings, they’d look like farewell letters.

How did you experience the development of your own style?

I’ve always drawn lumpy characters but over time, they became more simple. I’ve also dropped detailed colouring as it was too time-consuming, but I’d never dismiss my Indian ink and quill, although it would save me at least three additional steps.

Have you ever dreamed in cartoon-style?

No, I don’t think so. My bigger problem is that I rather tend to abstract, while being wide awake.

Was it ever an option for you to leave Düsseldorf? Why did you stay?

I’ve tried, but I can’t shit anywhere but home.

T

he concert poster on the roadside, the app for hotel bookings, the traffic sign on the motorway or even this magazine are just a few examples of millions and millions of designed things. They all belong to the field of graphic design, which has played a decisive role in shaping the look of our world for about 150 years. Although things were designed long before this period, it was the age of industrialisation that gave rise to modern graphic design. Even political and cultural movements soon became unimaginable without designed logos, packages or books.

In addition to the individual style of the designers, it is especially the spirit of the times that defines the appearance of graphic works, leading to constantly changing visual output. In this respect, historical works from the field of graphic design are always witnesses of days long gone.

As a location for corporations and trade fairs as well as a centre of music, theatre and art, countless design works were created in and for Düsseldorf. After the Second World War, the city became the centre of the German advertising industry for several decades. Local agencies created famous campaigns for the VW Beetle or Afri Cola.

Today, it is said, that there are around 1.000 creative businesses in the city, from small studios for visual communication to globally networked agencies. Whether digital or analogue, subculture or mainstream, the lively creative scene is what keeps Düsseldorf a visual city.

Ben Mathis Ben describes himself as a Düsseldorfer who never had any wanderlust. Perhaps he and the city entered into a fruitful interaction — the city becomes a canvas and when the cityscape changes, his art also changes and vice versa. The place to which he feels most connected is Kiefernstraße, where he has collaborated on three house facades. The talented sprayer, who now also works with multimedia, has thus become a real luminary in Düsseldorf and the surrounding area. For him, urban expression remains the best and unfiltered way of making art accessible to the public. After all, we don’t live in a museum, but in a city, so this is where art belongs.

What inspired you to start spray painting back then?

I discovered spray painting in the 8th or 9th grade, by having a few graffiti kids in class. We discovered graffiti as a medium together and took the school completely apart. At some point, the school was too small of course and then we tried it somewhere else. We went to the tracks by bike, painted the first bridges and were out all night. Thus, one thing led to another.

When did your spray painting developed more towards art?

You can find a lot in graffiti, some are looking for adventure, some want to express themselves creatively, other people just have a destructive streak and use paint for it. I was one of those people who wanted to be creative and in the long run, the time for such secret actions was a bit too limited for me to really unfold.

Over time, I began to exhaust the technical possibilities of the spray can. Then, of course, I had the idea that you could do this legally, small orders came in, so I sprayed something on canvas that I was able to sell, and everything developed from there.

How political or purely visual is your work?

I try to avoid taking a stand directly. I find very political art that points the finger rather clumsy.

But I like to throw up certain questions by confronting things and using paradoxes. I work a lot with symbols and like it when things come together that otherwise don’t really belong together, that you encounter in everyday life and that exist side by side, almost excluding each other. I try to depict things that surround me, many of which I may not agree with, but I don’t think it would be my job to say what is good and what is bad at all. Rather, I want to sensitise people to what surrounds us.

What would you paint on the White House in the USA? A black spot.

With whom, dead or alive would you like to go for an Altbier in Düsseldorf?

With my friend Andi from the Hood Company, preferably in our garden or in the studio of my neighbours.

What would you talk about?

About friends and graffiti.

Are there any places in the city that inspire your work?

All my surroundings inspire me. I look at art relatively little, but I like to be in the city and look around and observe, it gives me much more than what I could get out of any exhibition.

Candomblé has many faces being an electronic music collective consisting of six talented guys in their mid twenties, who create an exciting mix through their different backgrounds and formative influences. Essentialy ‘Candomblé’ is the name of a religious cult from Brazil and its characteristics can easily be transferred to the effect that music can have. Not the gods take possession of people as believed by cult members, but it is the music which takes over that role and magically causes people to dance frantically and get carried away.

The music label consists of Arisona (Kashiel aka. Aresona), Jannes (Jay Hoenes aka. Coco Drummel), Aki (AKI AKI aka. 4Boom), Philipp (Insecurity), Gregor (Rasputin) and Timo (DJ Ungel) and has released a few carefully chosen records over the last three years, sparingly too at no more than just one per year. The very latest record was released in July 2019. It is a solo album by celebrity chef AKI AKI and is called Dishjockey. Essentially, Candomblé is many things at once and fits in at exactly that point, where local music legacy and fresh ideas meet and where the regional and international music scene intersect. In this interview, the collective explains how a relatively manageable city like Düsseldorf can increase productivity and they also provide ideas on how to make this city even more worth living in.

THE DORF How did you get to make music and when did you start? How did you all meet?

ARISONA Candomblé was formed out of circles of friends. You know each other and hang out — and then you start making music together. This is how this whole Candomblé thing happened.

Personally, I believe this is the main thread running through a collective — you do stuff together and from this something totally new emerges.

None of this was planned. We have been brought together by a shared interest and feeling about nightlife culture and its diverse music.

TD Who are your role models and influences with regards to your music? How easy or difficult did you find it to develop your own style?

ARISONA Personally, I feel there was a lot in the L.A. beat scene that was important to me, for example Flying Lotus, Free the Robots etc. I’ve never had any involvement with German music. I found out later through Aki and the others that Düsseldorf indeed has a real music culture — and a really amazing history of electronic music.

PHILIPP Naturally each of us has different musical influences. Although we are all from Düsseldorf and around, we are all informed differently by our environments. We quickly discovered a number of connections though, like things we all dig at the same time. Additionally, there is the time when you went to the Salon des Amateurs for the first time. It was the gateway to a different world in which you got totally rewired and started noticing that there are a lot more things out there, of which you had no idea they even existed.

TD What do you like about Düsseldorf and how has the city worked to your advantage?

AKI I think I am the most qualified to answer this question as I used to be a real big hater of Düsseldorf. I am originally from Krefeld and when I used to go out at the weekend I was more likely to go to Cologne or the Ruhr Valley area. I did not really want to stay here, I thought the people were awful, totally crap. But then I had to move here to the city centre for work and got to know new people, Jannes was one of the first I met. I then noticed that behind the bold facade of the stereotype of Düsseldorf there is actually quite a lot interesting stuff happening, a really great exchange that I had

not come across before. In Cologne and Berlin people worked more against each other, fiercly competitive, dog eat dog style. In Düsseldorf it is not so much about making a name for yourself.

So, one day, I simply decided to stay. (Everyone laughs). I don’t really feel the urge to start from scratch somewhere else.

TD Would you say that finding less competition here enables you to develop more freely or differently?

ARISONA Everyone works with each other, absolutely and entirely. There are very few moments in which you think: ‘It’s been done before, so that means we can’t ever have a go.’ This way of thinking, based on competition, doesn’t really exist here.

PHILIPP In my opinion it is also partly due to the concept of the ‘local international’. The spaces accessible for artists are small and there are not that many. Yet there are a lot of people, who are interested in finding these spaces and to give them a different future meaning. Everyone has their

own circle of friends, yet somehow everyone knows each other. Everyone aims to make life here a bit more interesting. In a small city like Düsseldorf there is no space for competition.

Everyone gets that, we are not fighting each other for something, everyone is trying to make the best of one’s time in a beautiful way.

TD What are the benefits of working as a group or collective?

JANNES It is a more of a platform that makes things easier. The urge to do something, in whichever way, is present in all of us — it takes, however, different forms. It makes things easier to be able to have a collective as a base or forum. From a financial point of view, too. You can finance projects with and for each other. And you can enrich each other musically. We frequently meet in different group configurations, have a good night out and something may come out of this as a result, without having been set upon or planned. I think if you insist on going lonely warrior style, then your only gauge is your own point of view.

TD How do you rate the current development of the music industry and do you believe that the special relationship between listener and music and its individuality could be endangered by streaming services, the sheer overabundance and systematic accessibility?

ARISONA The shape and form of music production has changed dramatically in the world of pop.

There are hardly any albums being released, there are only ever some sort of singles featuring four or five people. It’s simply namedropping, helping the song to sell or be streamed.

ARISONA It is a conscious decision to not publish our releases through streaming services or via a digital platform. You have to buy the record so you can listen to it at home. That way you get a totally different relationship to the music. And that is very important to us.

PHILIPP We are not romanticising vinyl and we don’t have a problem with the huge number of musicians who release their music digitally. We just do it differently and I believe that this is the way it works best in our scene, the DJ-cosmos. Nothing else would make sense to us.

TD If you could make a suggestion to Düsseldorf or the people living here, what would it be?

JANNES Generally the property market ... if anyone has a warehouse to rent, then you don’t need to rent it to the first garage owner who comes along, but you could bear in mind the needs of the subculture.

AKI Lots of decisions are purely based on financial grounds. What yields the highest tax money?

Where is the return on investment the highest?

This is the reason why only luxury flats are being built. At first spaces like postPost are made available to be let on a temporary basis, then they are pulled down and something new is being built instead. No one places any value on constructing a building that could be interesting to the people of the subculture. Broadly speaking one could say that the cultural use of space could be better organised.

ARISONA Yes, because these ‘little things’ make up the character of a city, not things like, for example, how sublime the Kö appears.

JANNES In general, club culture is discounted as being something trivial with no cultural aspirations.

SHORT CUT

Christian Friedel Actor, singer, and director: Magdeburg-born Christian Friedel is a triple threat, who stops at nothing. On stage since the age of 10, he is best known for his atmospheric, neoteric theatre performances. With his striking stagings and scenographic Shakespeare concerts, he has been wowing audiences at the State Playhouse Dresden as well as the Düsseldorfer Schau­ spielhaus for years. As the village teacher in the Oscar-nominated film ‘The White Ribbon’, he achieved the international breakthrough in 2009. Last year, his band ‘Woods of Birnam’ made the leap from theatre productions to music charts and festival stages (e. g. 2019 Open Source Festival) with their indie-pop album ‘Grace’. By his own account, Christian leads a gypsy life in search of happiness — we are curious where the journey will take him.

You’re an actor, musician, and director. How do you juggle all of that?

First of all, it’s extremely fortunate that I can exercise these different activities and seeing them grow simultaneously makes me very happy. Generally speaking, I try to set priorities and to think in projects. Sometimes it’s impossible not to work on two things at once, but making compromises in terms of time usually stresses me out. If I do projects one by one, they tend to crossfertilize each other better.

By what criteria do you choose your roles?

I care about the figure’s character and whether there is a certain development throughout the story. From an actor’s point of view, in the best-case scenario, the role is a challenge. Does it suit my nature, or is it the complete opposite? Usually, the following applies: The more complex and mysterious a figure is, the more interesting the role gets. For me, other important factors are the director and my collaborators.

With which person, dead or alive, would you most like to be on stage with?

As regards music, I’d like to perform with Björk. When it comes to acting, there are many people whom I find great. For example, I’m a big fan of Meryl Streep — a true character actress!

In your opinion, what makes the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus so special?

I think that thanks to Wilfried Schulz the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus has succeeded in getting a very wide and young audience enthusiastic about theatre. In addition to its comprehensive programme, the Schauspielhaus also has a very passionate and empathetic ensemble that characterises it.

Finish this sentence: For me, a perfect day in Düsseldorf means...

Sleeping in, drinking a good coffee at Woyton or TENTEN, eating a delicious salad at Green Karma and performing on stage in a sold-out Schauspielhaus at night.

What are your upcoming projects and plans for the future?

At the moment, I’m recording a new album with my band ‘Woods of Birnam’: ‘How To Hear A Painting’ takes priority over everything else until the release date on December 6th of this year. In parallel, I’m also working on the conception of ‘Macbeth’ because I’ll be staging Shakespeare’s famous tragedy as a play. My band will once again be responsible for the musical side of things and I’ll be on stage as well — perhaps because I have a small penchant for megalomania. I usually avoid acting and directing at the same time, but the idea for ‘Macbeth’ emerged during our Shakespearean evening ‘Searching for William’. In this context, the figure of Macbeth played a role that we wanted to flesh out — but that’s just by the by. The premiere is at the State Playhouse Dresden on the 21st of March 2020.

Flockey Ocscor Creative expression is the lifeblood of Flockey Ocscor. The Friedrichshafen-born artist of Congolese descent is an internationally sought-after Hip-Hop dancer, as well as a musician, choreographer, videographer and spoken word performer. A true Locking legend, he is a two-time runner-up in Paris prestigious ‘Just Debout World Finals’ and has won numerous competitions. Besides his inherent sense of rhythm, what also makes Flockey unique is his poetic approach: By using spoken word in his performances, he establishes new artistic standards that don’t just concern stylistic rules, but rather possibilities and intentions. Dance, poetry and social commentary all wrapped up into one. The result is fantastic.

Was there a specific moment in your life that sparked your passion for dance?

Absolutely! Already as a child, I loved to watch my big brother dance. My biggest source of inspiration was definitely the culture of my homeland, the Congo.

Within the community, I was always fascinated by how my family and friends move to music. Here in Germany, I try to show my roots and tell my story through dance.

What does Locking mean to you and how has your dance style evolved?

To me, Locking is ‘Happiness’. A feeling that is difficult to put into words. With Locking, you can express virtually any emotion because there is a lot of authenticity and sincerity involved in it. My dance crew ‘Bad Newz MP’ played a big role in the development of my style.

We all dance very differently: Hip-Hop, House, Popping, Crumping — all of it inspired me.

Are there any highlights in your career so far?

It was a double highlight to become a two-time vice world champion of ‘Juste Debout’ together with my partner Sugar Rae. Apart from that, I still get excited when children and teenagers tell me that I’m an inspiration for them. In moments like these, I realize that I’m on the right track.

If you could give aspiring young dancers a piece of advice, what would it be?

It’s key to stay true to yourself. This might be easier said than done, but try to believe in yourself in moments of self-doubt — it pays off ! Another important tip is this: Never stop learning.

Which artist, dead or alive, would you most like to be on stage with?

Most of all, James Brown. Next would be the inventor of Locking Don “Campbellock” Campbell and Ronaldinho because football was my first big passion. It would also be awesome to reunite my divorced parents on stage. Last week, my mother and I danced together at my cousin’s wedding — that was a lot of fun!

In your opinion, what makes the tanzhaus nrw so special?

Diversity. Without trying to advertise, I can honestly say: There is no other dance school in Germany that offers so many classes, especially urban style. Hip-Hop, Locking, Popping, Waacking, Voguing and much, much more. Besides, a lot of big and exciting events take place here. The wide range of activities is what characterises the tanzhaus nrw.

Sammy Amara is a musician, the lead singer of the band Broilers — and a Düsseldorfer through and through. Born in Düsseldorf, Sammy grew up in the south of the city and is nowadays in good hands with the management company of Die Toten Hosen. With his band, he plays at big festivals such as Rock am Ring, Southside, or Hurricane.

According to Sammy, the musical style of the Broilers can be described as follows: “Rooted in Punk, but by now as open as a good swingers club.”

Together with the Broilers, Sammy looks back on a 25-year-long band history this year. But instead of of having a big anniversary party, the Broilers allow themselves the luxury of not doing anything. No party, no festivals. There’s time for that in 2020. In other words, it’s a perfectly timed opportunity for THE DORF to meet the otherwise busy Sammy for a night out in Düsseldorf. Instead of touring summer festivals, he shows us some of his favourite places in town.

After a beer or two at Uerige, we have dinner at the Destille in the Carlstadt.

Then, our path takes us to Oaks bar and Engelchen in the Old Town — but not before a quick Killepitsch-stopover at Et Kabüffke.

While cruising through Düsseldorf together, something becomes clear quite quickly: Düsseldorf flows through Sammy’s veins. With charm and Rhenish candour, Sammy approaches all sorts of people without any airs and graces. Throughout the night, Sammy chats with senior ladies at the bar Destille, poses for a photo with Old Town punks in front of Pick Up store, and he talks about music to a Japanese punk rocker, whom we casually met at Engelchen. When a drunk Netherlander starts speaking to us on Bolkerstraße, Sammy counters quick-wittedly in a surprisingly correct-surrounding Dutch.

During these numerous illustrious encounters, accompanied by plenty of food and even more drinks, we spoke with Sammy about music, gin, the city of Düsseldorf and life (by the Rhine).

THE DORF What musicians continue to influence and inspire you?

SAMMY AMARA For me, the most important musicians are those, who trigger a feeling of home. When I don’t know how to go on, or when I’m trying to create a sense of wellbeing through music, I listen to Bruce Springsteen and The Clash.

Die Toten Hosen are certainly also included in my list of inspiring musicians because without them I wouldn’t have started with punk rock. My taste in music is very broad and includes almost everything, except for what is considered R & B, Vocoder, or Autotune-hip-hop today — I don’t like these types of sound. Other than that: The first N.W.A album is just as amazing as Max Richter’s re-composition of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Those are two extremely important albums for me, but they came later on in my life.

TD This year the Broilers are celebrating their 25th anniversary. There must have been many highlights during this time — was there one that stood out for you?

SA 25th anniversary — and the Broilers aren’t doing anything! Sick, right? In terms of highlights, it’s often the first times, for example, when we were super sceptical about overreaching ourselves for Philipshalle-gig. In the end, we performed there twice. It was a crazy feeling to arrive at the forecourt of the hall. Later came the first time at the ISS Dome. Naturally, all these special moments

stay in my mind and, weirdly enough, they are often bound to Düsseldorf. Actually, it’s not that surprising after all: When taking the city train from the south of Düsseldorf to the Old Town as a child, I would pass the Philipshalle and its displayed advertisements — mostly Holiday on Ice, it seemed — and think to myself: One day, you’ll perform there yourself.

That’s why our first show there was and continues to be so extraordinary for me.

TD What was your first concert in Düsseldorf — who did you see?

SA The first-ever concert was “Heiter bis Wolkig” at Düsseldorf ’s Zakk. It must have been around ’91 or ’92. I remember it being summer, outside, with my ex-girlfriend.

We shared a can of beer and were totally drunk after. It was great.

TD From the beginning, punk has been a disruptive (anti-)movement. What did you rebel against when you were young?

SA When I started rebelling, it was against my parents — like almost every child. Relatively normal so to say. One wanted to be different from the parents, distinct from the Popper’s youth and all the nerds that walked around town. A little later came the third punk-explosion with Green Day and Offspring.

And just like that punks weren’t provocative enough anymore, so we cut our hairs and became skinheads. In this way, we were able to trigger people on a whole new level.

We knew what it meant to be a skinhead: Reggae music, anti-racism, smart and hard, well dressed, but still little pigs at heart. At the time, the attacks on the asylum camps in Mölln and Solingen were in the media. It was extremely confusing for our environment and there were

a lot of outraged reactions, which actually further spurred us on. People resorted to pigeonhole thinking and didn’t understand us: Are they Nazis? What’s happening here? But, of course, we thought it was great because, at last, our demeanor was provocative again. As I said, this wasn’t possible with punk anymore.

Well, looking back on the nature of

things now: We were 12-year-olds, rather cute indeed. Not that as hardcore 14 or 15-year-old skinheads we wouldn’t have been cute. But we thought we were super tough — after all, bomber jackets came in all sizes.

TD What is worthwhile protesting against today?

SA I’m not sure if ‘protest’ is the right word, but it’s always worthwhile to make clear what kind of past Germany has. I’m talking about the Third Reich and that it must never happen again. Neither in Germany nor in Europe or the world as a whole. I think that it pays off to be explicitly for something. Namely, a togetherness, a looking-after-one-another, a positive and open self. And what’s also important is to not allow borders to be drawn up again, so past bullshit can’t repeat itself. We always thought: It will never happen! But for the generation after us, this mentality isn’t as present anymore.

Why did you stay in Düsseldorf?

SA Regardless of the fact that I’m bound to my band in a certain way, Düsseldorf has everything that I need. Some other cities might want to projectile vomit when I say this, but for me, this city is the smallest metropolis of the world. A cute little form of metropolis because as a city we are cosmopolitan and have relatively much to offer. The great thing about the city’s size is that you can always reach a cool place by simply going somewhere and walking into any compass direction for ten minutes.

TD What do you miss when you are on tour?

SA Being alone. Apart from that, not really anything because I’m aware

that touring doesn’t last forever.

We only perform in German-speaking countries and cities so I know getting home doesn’t take long.

I try to enjoy cities when I get the chance to. Then, back in Düsseldorf, I’m a real couch potato.

TD Can you move around freely around the city or do people chat you up on the street?

SA Over time, it’s been happening more and more often that people approach me — but always very pleasantly, never annoyingly. As time goes by, one develops an antenna for such things. But it’s all cool because it shows: The band is becoming better known. When people are polite, which they are 95% of the time, getting held up is totally okay and also inevitably part of my job.

TD A restaurant that you’ve always wanted to go to, but never been to?

SA For a long time now, my man-

Oh, and the band is also bringing its own gin on the market! All of us talked about gin very early on and we have drunken loads. Even though it feels like the bubble is about to burst, we thought: Screw it! Gin and Broilers belong together, so we’re making our own gin — but only if it’s a really good product.

We talked with our friend at Uerige, Michael Schnitzler, and he was a fan of the idea. Together with him, we fleshed out everything over the course of circa a year and a half.

Without giving away too much, I can say: It’s the first gin from Düsseldorf that is completely made in Düsseldorf.

TD Where and when do you feel like a “true Düsseldorfer”?

SA I used to live in the south of Düsseldorf and there was this district-pub which was called Westside at the time. Detlev was at the bar at all times — he had a school-kiosk, very charming guy with a strong appearance and always well dressed.

For me, Detlev is a real rustic Düsseldorfer and when I drank beer with him, he’d always drink a socalled “sun” — a beer mat with lines all around it, one for each beer. Great guy! Warm greetings!

TD Describe the typical Düsseldorf-style in three words: SA When I’m angry and in a bad mood, I’d say: Take a pretty waxed jacket, put on a pink polo shirt, raise the collar and top your outfit off with some pretty boat shoes.

We started with a treat, thanks to Düsseldorf Tourismus and Tourismus NRW, by taking a tour around Düsseldorf on the Hop-On-Hop-Off Bus. After a beer or two at Carlsplatz to get us in the mood, the red bus took our magazine partners and contributors to the NRW-Forum, where the big launch party was about to kick off.
