Intro Wow. One year went by so fast and here we are with the second issue of THE DORF · THE MAG. No. 1 has experienced a lot in the last year – it has made many new friends, both in Düsseldorf, as well as internationally.

It went on trips all around the globe, was in Japan, at the book fair in Frankfurt and Berlin Travel Festival.

We are happy to be part of the urbanana project again this year. Current # news and stories are still published as usual in the online magazine. You can find almost all stories from this print issue on www.thedorf.de – with even more photos, content and tips from the protagonists.

With issue No. 2, we would like to show you the colorful and diverse faces of Düsseldorf again. In the address part, our small Düsseldorf guide, some addresses and spots have been added. We have also included a few new categories and, for example, introduce you to the best places to shop for children. Some addresses have been dropped because they no longer

exist. As it happens, the city is in constant change.

sculptor, stroking her short brown hair and a smile flickers across her beautiful, open face. The artist first shapes her models from clay, then from clay into plaster, and finally transfers them to wood.

naked man hangs from the ceiling. His long-limbed, life-sized body is the first thing coming into view, as the heavy studio door opens. The room with high ceilings and the cathedral-like windows is located in a former factory building of the “Duewag” on the edge of the Lierenfeld industrial estate. There is a strong smell of wood in the air. The male nude’s eyes are closed. He is slim, slender and made of limewood. This is the wood from which most of the sculptures of the Düsseldorfer artist Paloma Varga Weisz are made.

A “Beulenmann” (bumpman) is secured in the vice. His body is covered with balloon-like boils. Here the excessive growth of elephantiasis, but also the bumps of the plague provided the inspiration. The “bumpman” seems to have relaxed into his fate. His right hand is placed on his left. His left leg is crossed slightly over the right. Him and his form or rather disfigured form display an inexplicable ease.

Beside him on the workbench sits the “mouse-child”. A squatting mouse with the face of a human child, eyes closed.

Her mother used to call her “mousechild” when she was little. A term of endearment transformed into art.

The man hangs helplessly — in the ropes, so to speak, on straps. His joints are flexible, like a life-sized puppet on strings.

His expression seems forlorn and he has an aura of vulnerability about him. He is literally hanging in the air. And is sentenced to immobility. This hanging man is an example of the incredible precision in the craftsmanship and artistic language of Paloma Varga Weisz.

Ponti (1), the tiger-dachshund, with one green and one blue eye, and Feri (12), one of Paloma Varga Weisz’ two sons, roam through the adjacent living area.

His grandfather was also called Feri.

Feri Varga Weisz was Hungarian and also an artist. He was already 61 years old when Paloma was born in 1966. Her name is inspired by one of his friends in Paris during the golden era of the

The silence in the wide, well-structured studio space has almost something sacred. Everywhere you look, other beings come to life. Contemplative, introspectively beautiful faces or busts, with open, expressionless or closed eyes, lying, almost sprawling female nudes, in showcases, on boxes or shelves.

Or, here and there, just a pair of arms or legs rise in the air.

The silence in the wide, well-structured studio space has almost something sacred.

There are 37 tools lined up on the workbench — from flat carving tools to fine knives. “That’s not all, by far”, says the

twenties — Pablo Picasso. If you wanted to tell Paloma Varga Weisz’ whole life story, it would fill a book. In any case, her father followed her mother from France in the fifties to Neustadt at the Weinstrasse.

The fact that Paloma Varga Weisz became an artist is, in her view, a path that was already mapped out. “It’s like children of doctors often also study medicine”, she says with an earnest look on her face. The artistic work was something completely natural in her childhood. Feri Varga, the father’s artist name, spread his paintings across all walls, including those in the rooms of the three children. And they were encouraged to draw and paint, too.

“We organised exhibitions and sold the works to our parents. An early preparation for the art market”, says the artist and smiles.

Initially though, she wanted to be an actress. After falling asleep over studying the text “Antigone” for an entrance exam, however, she decided: That’s not for me!

“I then became my father’s apprentice”, says Varga Weisz. But her portfolios were rejected by all art academies. What followed was a formative period between occupied houses and the beautiful landscape of her surroundings, with her boyfriend at the time and people of all professions: “The full hippie programme.

There were no pubs. We met, made big bonfires and had great parties.” And then a friend raved about a school in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a “rock solid” education for carpenters and wood sculptors — with only five admitted at a time. Paloma Varga Weisz passed the

The lessons included life drawing, drawing, molding, carving. “In this incredibly beautiful environment”, recalls the sculptor. “The only town on the edge of the Alps. Mountains of 3000 metre right outside the door. This time grounded me and connected me to the material.”

It was a “school of seeing” for her.

When she finally came to Düsseldorf ’s academy of fine arts in 1990, the professors of the orientation classes said to her: “At first, you have to forget everything!” She should free herself of woodcarving and look for her own topics.

“That was confusing for years”, she says, seemingly still amazed of how she returned to woodcarving in the end.

From Tony Cragg she changed over to Gerhard Merz. At that time she carved her legendary meerkat for an end of year exhibition. Its human-like behaviour fascinated her. The same goes for her stag. She had read about the peculiar posture of the animal standing on its hind legs in the papers. On school trips with Gerhard Merz to Florence and Siena she discovered the renaissance period — especially Piero della Francesca. “I was actually more fascinated by the paintings.” But sculptures also influenced

All these works provided a source for her own language. From then on, the artist’s aim was “to get to the present moment, to find a contemporary language” in which the medieval works echo, but which, moreover, gives way to a truly personal and original voice.

“Carving out a career in art in Germany is not that easy”, she says, looking thoughtful again. There isn’t an obvious reason for it. But one thing is certain: Immediately after she finished her studies in 1998, Paloma Varga Weisz had her first solo exhibition in the now defunct Galerie Bochynek in Düsseldorf. Today she is represented by Konrad Fischer Galerie.

Her art has won several awards. She has a presence on the international stage,

including as a participant at the Venice Biennale and is represented in New York

by Barbara Gladstone, among others.

The most successful collaboration to date is with the Londoner gallerist Sadie Coles.

The next show is scheduled for June 2018.

Then the artist tells a little anecdote.

While still a student at Düsseldorf ’s Art Academy in 1996, she participated with two small sculptures in a group exhibition in Stockholm — a co-operation between the Rhineland and the Swedish capital.

Paloma Varga Weisz positioned one lying and one standing nude in a couple of available niches in Stockholm’s house of culture. Then disaster struck: Just before the opening one of the two figures was stolen — the standing female nude.

It caused a big upset. “After all, Queen Silvia of Sweden was conducting the opening ceremony”, recalls Varga Weisz.

An ad appeared in the newspapers pleading with the thief that if he hands in the work at the reception, he would not be punished. But nothing happened. Interpol got involved and Paloma Varga Weisz found out her work was included on the list of missing works of art and was listed directly behind Vincent Van Gogh. She was intrigued by that. What she wasn’t impressed by was having to stay silent about the theft during the opening in order not to disturb the proceedings.

the Queen’s appearance and many other official guests. “Queen Silvia was kindly chatting with me in German and I stood there in front of her with a tied tongue.”

Back at home in Düsseldorf, the anger flared up again. Without further ado she wrote a letter to Queen Silvia and added a picture of the stolen sculpture. She was sorry that the Queen had unfortunately missed the wonderful work, because it had previously been stolen and she was not allowed to mention anything. However, she would give her the opportunity to see it now by providing her with picture of it.

Today, Paloma Varga Weisz laughs about the audacity of her younger self. Shortly thereafter she received a letter from the Queen. “She apologised for her country and gave me a check for double the amount of the insurance for this work.”

About two thousand Deutschmark.

An insurance value Paloma Varga Weisz can only smile about today. “But the story is so beautiful, it’s almost worth that the sculpture was stolen”, says Paloma Varga Weisz, laughing. In February she was invited to a group show in Stockholm again. Nothing was stolen this time. But she discovered a perfume entitled “1996” instead (the year of the first group exhibition). An artist friend gave it to her after she told him the 1996 anecdote. The standing female nude is still missing today.

Alice Eikelpoth ‘please excuse my many spelling mistakes in the interview, the keyboard of my laptop is broken and i can’t use capital letters nor question or exclamation marks, haha … sorry’, writes Alice Eikelpoth when sending her questionnaire back. An endearing statement, particularly at a time when things — and often people — are immediately written off or replaced when making the smallest mistakes. Today everything and everybody has to function perfectly.

Artists are one of the few exceptions, they enjoy a certain creative freedom.

That is why we kept the spelling in lower case — Alice’s words don’t lose their impact by that. On the contrary. Alice Eikelpoth was born in 1982 into a family of artists. Her father, Dieter Eikelpoth, photographed many international celebrities and was a highly-regarded fixture in Düsseldorf. Her brother Robert, who took her portrait, also chose a career as photographer. Alice went her own way artistically and studied Fine Art Painting in Brighton. Her collages often have photographs as a starting point and develop from there.

How would you describe your art?

my art comes from within. in my works, i can express experiences and feelings that i can’t explain with words. i would describe the exterior of my works as ­colourful, wild and messy.

You come from a family of arists. Was choosing a different career path ever an option for you?

no. my brother and i had a crazy childhood. my parents travelled extensively and almost always took us along. we were always on the move and experienced our father’s job first hand. it was very exciting but somehow normal for us, we didn’t know any different. this time has certainly had a big influence on me and i knew early on that i would definitely not end up in an office. however, i also knew i didn’t want to be a photographer.

How did you arrive at your particular painting/ collage technique?

it certainly was my way to rebel against from what i knew growing up. since everybody in my f­ amily was or is a photographer – father, mother, grand­father and my brother – i had to find my own language and medium. during my fine art studies in england, a tutor once said to me: ‘you gotta murder your darlings to find your own language’. with that, he wanted to tell me i should distance myself and find myself, my own way of expression. so i started to de-construct and destroy the images that were very familiar to me. i had discovered the combination of painting and collage technique.

Where do you find inspiration?

i find inspiration in almost everything, it doesn’t have to be something special, sometimes it simply happens by starting to work on something, without too much thought. new things often develop from there. i don’t like to work with too much planning or preparation.

What is beauty? Should/could art be beautiful?

art absolutely does not have to be beautiful. i would never describe my art as beautiful.

Was it ever an option for you to leave Düsseldorf? Why did you stay?

i lived half of my life in london. it was always my father’s dream to live abroad. so when i was 12 years old, we moved from düsseldorf to london. i went to school there and later studied fine art at the university of arts in london. i only came back to düsseldorf with my husband a few years ago … london is too expensive. we are happy here now with our little family and my studio. at the moment it doesn’t look like we would leave düsseldorf any time soon, but who knows …

Get into the car at the weekend, leave Düsseldorf ’s city limits behind and drive to the neighbouring region of the RUHR AREA to enjoy a bit of cultural diversity. ‘Ab in den Pott’ as the locals would say. It is a region that made history due to its heavy industrial manufacturing past. Even though the collieries were closed long ago, the Ruhrgebiet remains acutely alive due to its extremely high population density. So it comes as no surprise that it has emerged as one of Europe‘s most diverse and rich cultural areas, with Essen, representing the Ruhrgebiet, being declared City of Culture alongside Istanbul in 2010. Theatres, museums, galleries, festivals — visitors are simply spoilt for choice. Here is our list of the best to come for the season 2018/2019: RUHR KUNST MUSEEN Let’s start with the city of Dortmund and its landmark, the ‘DORTMUNDER U Zentrum für Kunst und Kreativität’ (‘Centre for Art & Creativity’), situated right in the heart of North RhineWestphalia. Part of it is the Museum Ostwall, where you can explore the exhibition ‘SchichtWechsel’ (‘Shift changeOver’) from May to August 2018, a creative and artistic exploration of the topic ‘Coal and Mining’.

How has the cultural and artistic landscape been influenced by the industrial restructuring of the area? A visit will give answers and fuel your curiosity.

Essen’s FOLKWANG MUSEUM is one of the best known museums of art, including classic Modern Art and photography post 1945.

From September to January you will be able to experience works informed by the New

Sobriety movement. The exhibition ‘Unheimlich real’ (‘Incredibly realistic’) deals with the magic realism in paintings that came out of Italy in the 1920s. This is the place to discuss art, culture and life. It’s a promise!

LUDWIG GALERIE SCHLOSS OBERHAUSEN is a popular gallery, with emphasis on showing work related to photography, comics and cartoons. From June to September 2018 you can visit an exhibition dedicated to Rolf Kauka and his cult fox-characters Fix and Foxi. Immerse yourself in the world of the German Walt Disney, whose work influenced and shaped the development of comics in the German-speaking world.

RUHR BÜHNEN Schauspielhaus Bochum is the biggest playhouse in the Ruhr area which is no less than 100 years old. The productions are known for their artistic diversity, favouring socio-political topics and are famous for bringing highly respected performers to the stage. In November Sandra Hüller, best known through the movie Toni Erdmann, will be on stage as the Amazonian queen Penthesilea in Johan Simons’ new production of Heinrich von Kleist’s classic.

DEUTSCHE OPER AM RHEIN (with its OPERA

HOUSE in Düsseldorf and THEATER DUIS­

BURG) is one of Europe’s most influential classical ballet houses. THEATER DUISBURG will be showing one of the best known ballet classics ever, Swan Lake. Martin Schläpfer’s version will be performed later in the year by one of the countries leading ballet companies, crowned Best Dance Company by the magazine ‘tanz’.

Our last stop is Essen, home of the UNESCO world heritage site ZECHE ZOLLVEREIN. The artists’ centre PACT ZOLLVEREIN has emerged as the new stage for fresh new and international productions of dance and performance art. November 2018 will see the wonderful Meg Stuart, who recently received the lifetime award ‘The Golden Lion’ at the Biennale di Venezia, with her work ‘Celestial Sorrow’.

berbilk’s heart beats along the Kölner Straße. Starting at Pempelforter Straße, crossing Worringer Platz, past Oberbilker Markt and all the way to Oberbilker Allee — there it is: a road, 2.6 km long, the centre of this vibrant area, which constantly supplies Düsseldorf with new ideas, open minded people and – last but not least – a rich array of products. Although until now largely ignored by the the city‘s organised tourism, this area has everything it takes to make it the city’s ‘hot spot’. So it is about time to have a closer look at this part of the ‘real’ Düsseldorf.

Walking down Kölner Straße there are only a few signs indicating that it used to look quite different around here … Oberbilk was central Düsseldorf ’s first working class area, defined by its local industry. It was here where fortune hunters and day labourers were drawn to in their quest to find work. However, searching today you will find quite a different sort of treasure: over 100 retailers take you on a journey to explore a huge variety of cultures and their particular specialties. Morocco, Turkey, the Lebanon, Africa, Iran and India are just a few of this journey’s stopovers waiting to be discovered.

Apart from cultural diversity Kölner Straße offers an impressive product portfolio: a hairdresser next to a delicatessen, a translation agency next to an artists’ association, a long established draper’s opposite a Persian pastry shop … you can find anything here — or at least almost anything. It is precisely this international atmosphere which gives this road its inimitable and unique character. Anyone strolling past the 381 houses of Kölner Straße is indeed journeying around the world.

We meet Monica Riboni and Valeria D’Amico on a Wednesday morning in Düsseldorf-Düsseltal at Monica’s apartment.

The two Italian ladies moved from Milan to Düsseldorf with about 30 other families when their husbands’ company was relocated there. Since last year, the two women teach Italian cooking classes and can be booked as ‘Chef-at-Home’.

Together with their guests they then cook Italian specialties ‘A la Nonna’ — grandma style.

The two young mothers attended German classes and speak with a delightful Italian accent while busying themselves in the kitchen and serving coffee in small, wonderfully kitschy cups. Monica’s flat is a haven of gorgeous bric-à-brac — all from flea markets as they both passionately point out.

Where are all the pretty things from?

All from flea markets! The flea markets in Germany are much better than those in Italy. There are much better bargains. In Italy, there are usually antiques at flea markets and they are priced accordingly.

VALERIA We always take our visitors from Italy to the flea market and they love it as much as we do.

Thank you very much for the invitation! What’s for lunch today?

M First there are antipasti. Onions filled with a mixture of bread crumbs, capers, olives, tuna and anchovies. In addition, an octopus salad with fennel which I prepared this morning because octopus takes a lot of time. As a main course we serve pasta, homemade of course, with saffron, leek, potato cream and prawns. The dessert is panna cotta with orange cream, chocolate sauce and caramel crumbles.

Wow. Sorry about the generic question, but: how do you manage to stay thin?

V I eat everything but not too much.

M I love eating and probably will become chubby at some point (laughs).

TD

Could you explain what to expect when I book ‘La Cucina di Casa’?

V That depends on what you book: if we come to somebody’s home as a ‘Chef at- Home’ or ‘Book a Cook’, we cook for the clients in the privacy of their own home. We focus on regional, Italian cuisine and its traditional recipes that we’ve known since our childhood. Our mothers and grandmothers passed those recipes to us as they have been passed down from mother to daughter for generations.

First, we put a menu together with the client. After that we deal with everything else; from shopping to cooking, to setting the table and serving. All we need for that is a kitchen. Our clients can relax together with their guests and enjoy. Naturally everybody is welcome in the kitchen and can have a peek in the pots and pans.

M In our cooking classes, we go on a culinary journey together, discovering the small, well-guarded secrets of the regional Italian cuisine. It is a lot of fun to cook together and the effort is rewarded with the delicious results. The cooking classes are suitable for friends, team events or simply for people who enjoy cooking with others. The menu is established beforehand so that there is something for everybody. The motto is: everybody has to join in. We do not want to stand in front of people and talk. Everybody has to take part so they learn something — there is something to do for everybody. But we are not professional chefs. We cook the dishes that we grew up with, nonna’s and mama’s food. And recipes that we find in our cookbooks. But everything is always done with a lot of passion.

What was your favourite recipe of your nonnas?

M My grandma had three recipes she always cooked on a Sunday. Those were: gnocchi, polenta with brasato — brasato is a beef roast — and risotto. Risotto is a classic dish of the region I come from, Lombardy.

V My favourite recipe of my grandma was ravioli with ricotta and spinach, we had that every Sunday. It was also the first recipe I learned from her. I was probably 16 years at the time.

WHAT IS YOUR ­ FAVOURITE DISH?

MONICA: TAGLIATELLE AL RAGU

Vegetables filled with tuna Ingredients for 6/8 persons 2/3 yellow or red pepper 3 onions 1 sprig of parsley-chopped 2 cans of tuna, natural (150 g drained net weight) 80 g of grated Parmesan 1 hand full of breadcrumbs 4 tbsp olives 2 tbsp capers 4 anchovy fillets olive oil salt and pepper

Preparation Wash, clean and quarter the pepper. Peel and half onions, carefully separate the layers. Put all to one side.

Chop olives, capers and anchovies and put in a bowl with all other ingredients.

Grease an oven dish with a bit of oil and lay out the vegetable pieces (pepper, onion halves). Fill these with the help of a small spoon with the previously prepared mixture. Finally, add a few sprinkles of olive oil on top, bake the vegetables in the oven for approx. 30 min at approx. 180 – 200 °C.

And your first recipe, Monica?

M My first recipe, I think, was gnocchi. My grandma had 6 grandchildren.

She prepared the dough and we always came an hour earlier to roll the gnocchi for the 14 people of our family.

TD

What is the typical cuisine of the region you come from?

M Polenta is a typical dish in Milan, and the Lombardy respectively. This is rarely served in Germany even though it is such an essential Italian recipe.

It’s served mainly as a puree with a piece of cheese in the middle. Leftovers are cut and grilled or baked the next day.

V I come from Cagliari, Sardinia. We eat a lot of fish there. We also often make fregola, that is a small pasta almost like couscous, or it’s prepared as a soup with fish.

M Valeria makes amazing gnocchetti Sardi, we cook that often in our classes because it is a lot of work and everybody has something to do then. We prepare it with a salsiccia tomato sauce. Salsiccia is rather difficult to find — but at Andronaco’s in Cologne we can find some. Also at Saitta in Düsseldorf, they have great products — but they are unfortunately quite expensive.

Where else do you buy your ingredients?

M We buy the fish at the Metro. Also at Centro, unfortunately they had to relocate from the Ackerstraße because their contract ran out after 30 years.

There is a shop on the Nordstraße and the new one will open on the Königsberger Straße.

TD

What did your mum or nonna make when you were ill?

M Mhhh, let me think … Pastina. That is a soup with very small pasta shapes, stars for example. Homemade broth with this little pastina was cooked for ill children.

V (pureeing something at the stove) My mum made freshly squeezed orange juice. It’s super healthy, of course.

M Yes, or warm milk with a bit of alcohol, for example grappa. For the throat — it’s the cure for everything (laughs).

TD

What is typically German for you?

M (while kneading the dough for the pasta) There are always rules here. But that is good. There are rules in Italy, too, only we don’t always follow them. We are a bit more flexible that way (laughs). Sometimes that is good, sometimes not.

(Monica is finished with the dough) There, the dough needs to rest now.

TD When your husbands told you a move to Düsseldorf was on the cards — what was your first reaction?

M I was scared. I was working at an agency in Milan and did not want to leave my job. However, then I was pregnant and had a proper look at the city and I really liked it here. Düsseldorf is great for kids and families. What do you think, Vale?

V I really like it here, too. I only miss the sun and the light.

M Yes, you can’t change the weather. But in summer there is a lot of sun.

And it was difficult to find new friends at first because we were a big Italian community. There were hardly opportunities to meet Germans. Now, after six years, everything is easier.

Do you want to return to Italy at some point?

M (rolling out the dough for the pasta) Maybe as pensioners. Then we’ll make marmalade and pickles (laughs). No, seriously. We bought the apartment and plan to stay here.

V There are many advantages here. The children speak two languages, just like that.

M We also have grown personally. We’ve met many people from different cultures. In Italy, it wouldn’t be like that, I think. It is normal for our kids to grow up in an international environment and that makes me happy.

This knife is really beautiful, where is that from?

M (cuts the pasta, Valeria puts it on a large sieve and dusts it with flour) I brought that from Japan.

I really enjoy travelling and whenever my husband and I are going abroad, I bring something for my kitchen. As well as recipes and inspirations. In Milan, there is a Michelin star Japanese restaurant that combines Italian and Japanese cuisine. I’ll remember the name in a minute (quick break, she googles it on her mobile): Tokuyoshi. I would love to find a fusion cuisine, for example a GermanItalian one. My dream is to find a grandma who would teach me how to cook German food.

Murat Avcioglu Murat Avcioglu is an integral part of Düsseldorf’s restaurant scene. After various stop overs in the kitchens of the Weinhaus Tante Anna, Behrens am Kai, Brasserie Stadthaus and the restaurant ‘Victorian’, he has now established his own eatery. Laid back, casual and with an Asian touch.

Murat has two further great passions aside from cooking: sports and his little daughter Noa. Take a guess what his new restaurant is called.

What is special about the food at Noa Foodbar?

I offer my guests a contemporary cuisine. For me, this means no difference between starters and main courses but rather medium sized dishes that are in combination well suited to sharing. Contemporary also means that the food is easily accessible but never boring. Variety is important to me: that’s why guests can discover a few new, creative dishes on our menu every week.

You have been around the block in Düsseldorf‘s gastro scene, why was it time for this concept now?

I had been thinking about what I am missing in the local gastro scene for a while already: a combination of good food, laid back bar atmosphere and cool music.

With the Noa Foodbar I have created this place myself.

Where do you find inspiration for new dishes?

While shopping.

Suzusan is the name of the label of Hiroyuki Murase, called Hiro, who breathes new life into the Japanese craft of shibori. The company is based in a backyard studio in Flingern-Süd, opposite the Weltkunstzimmer, and sells its collection far beyond Düsseldorf. The fabric produced with this special technique has already been worn on Dior’s catwalk as well as by international stars like Natalie Portman. THE DORF visited him in his studio to find out more about his label, shibori and his future plans.

“When you see shibori in Japan, you think, ‘Yes, I know.

Traditional crafts, nothing new’. But in Europe, people were excited about it.”

THE DORF Hiro, what exactly is shibori and how did you come to the business?

SUZUSAN For over 400 years, my home Arimatsu has been known for its shibori techniques, which are used for kimonos.

There are many different techniques, but in principle, the cloth, traditionally mostly cotton, is bound by hand and then dyed. When the thread is then opened again, you can see the resulting colour contrast.

Arimatsu is located between Tokio and Kyoto and in the past, each family had its own technique of binding, dyeing and sewing. The material went from house to house, from family to family, like a modern factory with its work chains.

A kimono fabric went through about five or six different families until the kimono was ready. My family has been running this business for a hundred years, I am the fifth generation. When I was still living in Japan, I was not interested in shibori at all. I wanted to become an artist. First I studied in England, then I moved to Düsseldorf to study at the Academy of Fine Arts. I did not want to have anything to do with the family business (laughs).

How did you come to shibori after all?

My father, who has produced a lot for Issey Miyake, came to Europe to show his fabrics at a trade show. And because he does not speak German or English, I helped him. So, for the first time outside my homeland, I saw the shibori fabric and the reactions to it. When you see shibori in Japan, you think, “Yes, I know.

When we first exhibited at the Premiere Vision, Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Dior approached us. For Dior, we actually made haute couture fabrics.

A dress they made from it cost 80,000 euros in the end and was later worn by Natalie Portman to an event.

And that’s why you now preserve the techniques that still exist?

When was that?

This was the second collection by Raf Simons. His sourcing assistant already was in contact with us when Raf was still at Jil Sander, but they did not have a big enough budget. When Raf went to Dior, the sourcing contact went with him as well. At Dior Haute Couture he remembered us and there they also had the necessary budget (laughs).

Recently, Loewe also called to order a fabric, but they said they would need it in two weeks. I had to decline that order, we simply had no capacity.

No! I’m a big Loewe fan (laughs).

Yes, Loewe is great (laughs). But with such a complex crafting technique, it’s not that easy. I’ll show you.

He plays a YouTube video of the artisans in Arimatsu, who are almost all very old. They sit on tatami mats and are wrapping and twisting cloth. Pointing to the oldest, he says: Unfortunately, she has retired recently. She started working at the age of eight and worked until she was 94 years old. She has done nothing else all her life.

Unfortunately, the techniques are more and more lost. As I said earlier, there were once 10,000 shibori craftsmen.

When I started doing that, there were only 200 left. My dad said to me, “In 15 years, you will not see any craftsmen here if it continues like this. The shibori craft is dying out.” Whenever a family or craftsman stops, a technique is lost.

Yes, we are doing that. And we also develop our own techniques. In 2008, I started my collection because commissions from other fashion designers are an uncertain business, of course. They order one season, but maybe not in the next. With our own collection, we can ensure that there is always work for the craftsmen and women. Like this we have already been able to hire and train a few young, new talents.

How come you founded your own label Suzusan?

I used to live in a flat share with Christian Dietsch, he studied business administration and I studied art. Christian wanted to start his own business after graduation.

When my dad was visiting, the fabric lay on the kitchen table and Christian saw it and asked me if we should start a business with it. That’s how it all began.

We started with scarves, then lamps and fashion were added, and last came our home line, for which we produce blankets and pillows. Currently, the fashion line is our best selling one.

Where is Suzusan being sold?

At first, I drove to the shops with five scarves in my suitcase and talked to the retailers personally. We now have sales outlets in 23 countries. Among them are really great shops like L’Eclaireur in Paris, Biffi in Milan or Andreas Murkudis in Berlin – Andreas was one of the first who believed in us.

Of course, we have different customers depending on the category. For fashion, we work with boutiques, home and interior is mainly bought by hotels and restaurants.

And here it looks like you’ve planned a small concept store, right?

Yes, that’s true. I know many artisans and designers in Japan, Paris and Milan.

I would like to bring this together with the designs of Suzusan.

And when is it going to happen?

Oh well ... Good question (laughs).

Miaki Komuro Miaki Komuro studied fashion design at home in Tokyo at the prestigious Bunka Fashion College. The school was founded in 1923 and has given rise to some of the most important international designers like Yohji Yamamoto and Takada Kenzo. Miaki Komuro has been living in Düsseldorf since 2014 and founded her eponymous fashion brand in 2016. Her clothes are an amalgamation of Japanese and western influences. Every single item becomes a unique piece, which can be interpreted as a protest against society’s current throwaway mentality and today’s fast fashion.

How would you describe the style of your fashion label? Minimalist avant-garde.

Are there places or certain spots in the city that inspire you in your work?

The concept store ELA selected in Unterbilk. They combine different international fashion designers work and my own fashion pieces are styled in combination with other labels. That way I can also get a new perspective of my collection and come up with new ideas.

You design according to the principles of onko-chishin and wayo-settchu. Could you explain what they mean?

Onko-chishin means to explore the past in order to derive at new insights and perceptions of truth. The world is constantly changing and it is not just the Kimono which belongs to the past. In fact, we feel that all the revolutions in fashion that have been instigated by Japanese designers belong to the past. Personally, I am not interested in giving the old a modern twist, but connecting the old with the yet unknown future and thus creating a new kind of “present tense”. Wayo-settchu is basically the amalgam­ ation of Western elements with the Japanase soul.

Which artists or fashion designers have influenced your style?

Each and every Japanese fashion designer who was involved in revolutionising the world of fashion.

In Paris in the 1980s the designers Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto presented collections which surprised with entirely black, torn and distressed clothes and thus destroyed the then current accepted perception of perfection and beauty of Western fashion. There was also Issey Miyake, who developed a way to imitate the shape of the human form, not by using pattern cuts, but different kinds of pleats. In a historical context Japanese designers have only been involved in Western fashion for a very short time and yet — in the middle of the Western world — have come up with an innovative way of showing fresh forms and creating a new sense of beauty. This particular spirit of true avantgarde has definitely influenced me.

Why did you come to Düsseldorf? And what made you stay?

I wanted to make my dream come true to live in the world of fashion. There is also a large number of Japanese artists living here and their work and activities have created a platform inviting intense cultural exchange between Japan and Germany.

Brian Storm Wim Wenders, Pharrel, Liam Gallagher and Frank Ocean, they all have received the royal treatment: an illustration by Brian Storm. It hasn’t done them any harm, on the contrary. Such illustrated and illustrious personalities only become more iconic in his works. The Düsseldorfer artist illustrates for magazines, fashion labels, ad agencies, festivals, record labels and the theatre.

The repertoire of the illustrator and art director also includes logo design and typography. Like Stephan Lomp (p. 94), he works from Studio Rabotti. your style?

How would you describe the aesthetics of your illustrations?

Ideally full of contrasts. At first delicate, careful and quiet, but in the next moment completely full on, brash and loud.

Where do you find inspiration?

First and foremost I am inspired by music – preferably an eclectic mix. Punk, Hip Hop, Electronics, Country, Soul – there is always so much to discover that is inspiring and energizing.

Which one of your recent jobs did you enjoy the most?

It’s difficult to decide since I particularly value the variety my job offers. A recent highlight was definitely the collaboration with my friends from the Morphoria Design Kollektiv. In order to welcome professional footballer Takashi Usami at Fortuna Düsseldorf, I was asked to design an illustrated poster.

Which artists or illustrators have influenced

Probably others can judge better what influences are eventually becoming part of my work. B ­ esides numerous musicians, I am a huge fan of Anselm Kiefer, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Gian Galang.

Was it ever an option for you to leave Düsseldorf? Why did you stay?

Sometimes I wish for some peace and quiet. A suburb of Düsseldorf would be fine because I enjoy living here very much. I appreciate what Düsseldorf offers in every respect – but in particular the creative scene and its cultural offerings... Last but not least, I can hardly imagine leaving my colleagues and our joint Studio Rabotti any time soon.

With whom, dead or alive, would you go for an Altbier in Düsseldorf?

Unfortunately I am too young to have been able to share a few Altbier with the punk scene of the Ratinger Hof.

What would you talk about?

Ideally we would listen to far too noisy music while drinking beer.

If you could eat Düsseldorf what would it taste like?

Caviar with ‚Sauerbraten‘ (braised beef, marinated in vinegar).

Stephan Lomp How would you describe the aesthetics of your illustrations?

Stephan Lomp is an illustrator and graphic recorder. What is a ‘graphic recorder’, some might ask. Imagine life as a comic book.

You are talking and a speech bubble appears in front of your mouth. You fall down and it goes Peng and Ouch and a cloud of dust appears next to where you fell. In short, somebody draws a story parallel to your life on an overlaying transparent sheet. Something like that. Only it happens at conferences or speeches — so more can be remembered.

Colourful, reduced, playful and a bit quirky.

Where do you find inspiration for characters and stories?

As a children’s book author (Catch me if you can, Mamasaurus, Wilfred and Olbert’s Totally Wild Chase etc.), the Düsseldorfer lets his imagination run wild with stories. His hidden object pictures are also so phenomenal that we simply had to have one in the magazine.

As part of ‘Studio Rabotti’, he shares a workspace with six likeminded people where the rough reality has to remain outside — different laws and pure creativity apply here!

I find stylistic inspiration in old children’s books from the 50s to the 70s. It is astonishing to see how timeless some of these old works are. The acrylic illustrations by Alan Greé for example have similarities with modern vector illustrations, with the use of strong colours and brushstrokes. I would like to capture exactly this timelessness. Also a tour of the art academy can be inspiring. Maybe not directly for a children’s book but in order to get mentally away from work and to see what else is possible.

Why did you decide to create children’s books?

As an illustrator, I can have lots of fun again with drawing and thinking up of little stories. In contrast to commissioned work, I can create the books I would like to have read as a child.

What is the journey from the first inspiration to the finished book?

I present some rough ideas to the publisher. Together with an editor it will be developed until we have a text and concept. And then the development starts.

Usually first with little pencil drawings and later with colouring at the computer.

Which artists and illustrators have influenced your style?

For a long time, I was immersed in comics. I think the dark humour of Daniel Clowes and the quiet moments of Chris Ware have found their way into my first comics. The first ‘Mouk’ book from Marc Boutavant was an eye opener as well. It showed me that modern graphic design also has its place in children’s books. At a publisher’s party in London, I met Benji Davies who later became very famous with his book ‘Stormwhale’. He also has more of a graphic design background; he works at the computer but his work still has a handmade quality. I think I am walking this middle ground, too.

Was it ever an option for you to leave Düsseldorf? Why did you stay?

I have always kept the option open, the job situation was simply better here than elsewhere. By now, I don’t want to leave anymore because I appreciate to have a network of friends and colleagues here which I would have to establish again elsewhere.

What will be the sound of Düsseldorf in 2020? Meike Glass and Thorsten Schaar present six bands of which we hope to hear much more in the future. Brian Storm of Studio Rabotti, an illustration collective from Flingern, has illustrated the local musicians exclusively for us.

Düsseldorf has produced an astonishing amount of internationally acclaimed pop music over the past few decades — and extremely influential bands at that. Kraftwerk, of course, took the fast lane on the musical Autobahn in the 70s — complete with Düsseldorf license plates. Without these iconic pioneers of electronic music, techno would not have come to life twenty years later. At the end of the 1970s, the German punk movement formed on Ratinger Straße. Eventually, the band “Die Toten Hosen” emerged from that scene — still today the most successful rock band in Germany and honorary citizens of Buenos Aires.

The vibrant melting pot of the Old Town contributed to the founding of exciting new groups. Legendary clubs such as Creamcheese, Ratinger Hof and Unique Club provided the necessary inspiration and served as a meeting places for musicians, DJs and organizers. Those who wanted to found a band and make music in Düsseldorf have always found fertile ground and sometimes even rehearsal rooms.

With this heritage in mind, we wondered what could be the sound of our city in the near future. For a while, especially for bands making electronic music, hailing from Düsseldorf was difficult. Expectations were crushingly high when they were announced elsewhere as “heirs of Kraftwerk”, just because they happened to be from the same place. Today, Düsseldorfers are proud of their “robots”. The open-air concert at Ehrenhof for the start of the Tour de France 2017 is already considered historic.

Recently, even the construction of a Kraftwerk monument was discussed, similar to the Beatles monument in Liverpool.

In the meantime, the band scene has finally come unstuck. Never before have so many interesting projects faced their breakthrough as in 2018 — and this is by no means limited to electronic music! There are the “Joseph Boys” who have borrowed their name from the art world and posed for a famous photo in the cold water on the Königs­ allee last winter. Or the rock band “Love Machine”, whose gigs have long had to be relocated to larger halls in their hometown for growing crowd sizes — and who will inevitably set new hairstyle trends.

We’re introducing 6 bands that could perhaps only have been born in Düsseldorf.

If there was a section for ‘Best Up and Coming’, it would be headlined by WATT!. The Australian, wearing a Hawaiian shirt and a beard styled in tribute to Horst Lichter, makes dreamy New Wave/Synth Pop Music, which sets the stage for his distinctive deep voice.

His lyrics are about love, Ampelmänn­ chen (the figure on the pedestrian traffic lights), the STASI and even the peloton of the Tour de France, complemented by hypnotising and dynamic electronic sound tapestries. WATT!’s music would be equally at home in Berlin or London, so why did Rob Keane decide to settle in Düsseldorf? Simply ... because of love.

Actually, love twice over! He fell in love with a girl from Düsseldorf whilst studying music in Adelaide — and they are now married. Upon arriving in ‘the Dorf ’ he realised that the music that throughout his life inspired and fascinated him originated in exactly the city he had just moved to. When Rob is asked about his idols there is not a moment of hesitation: Kraftwerk, Conrad Schnitzler, NEU! In tribute to NEU! Rob even ‘borrowed’ the exclamation mark. So it does not really come as a surprise that WATT! is currently ready for take-off in Düsseldorf. It must be fate.

The name of this punk band pays homage to Joseph Beuys, the quarrelsome artist with the felt hat. The sledge, which graced the first plate of the “Joseph Boys”, was a kind of bow to his installation “The Pack”, which Beuys first built it in 1969 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. At its center: a VW bus and 24 wooden sledges produced in GDR. The band borrowed the sledge

symbol almost 50 years later and used it in a new context. Since then, they have referred to many Beuys quotes. The first LP, for example, was simply called “Fett” (“Fat”), written in capital letters. Beuys had once used five kilograms of butter for his famous “Fettecke” (“Fat corner”).

The five musicians are not artists by profession, but work day-jobs as cameraman, commercial director, stagehand, occupational therapist and perfume developer.

The musicians interpret their records as a Gesamtkunstwerk, which is why they are only released on vinyl and the packaging is made by hand. The first record was produced by screen-printing in a backyard of Birkenstraße in Flingern. The resident workshop “Oneofthem” is a cooperative with the mission to apply art to different materials. So, eventually, the Joseph Boys are all about doing everything themselves.

Everyone is an artist — in their world this rings also true for the band logo, record covers and concert posters. The latest coup: The staging of their band photo.

Long hair, long beards, wide shirts and fingers heavy with a thousand rings. If you have ever seen Love Machine live, it will be difficult to exile them from your memory. A live performance of the five piece equals a collective trance. Eyes closed, you dance and float through loop-

ing rhythms, percussion and drums drive you forward and a throaty, deep ’n’ gentle drawl carries you off into ‘cosmic worlds’.

Love Machine really do have a unique sound. It could be called psychedelic music, but in reality there is a lot more to it. African and Latin American rhythms join, there are hints of Blues, Jazz Ameri­ cana and Krautrock. Love Machine are the well established favourites of the Düsseldorf music and creative scene — in fact, they are actively involved in creating and building this scene themselves, too. They organise and promote ‘Ritus’ at the venue Schlachthof (a former abattoir) in Derendorf, where they invite underground artists from all over the world. Last year they wrote and performed a score for the classic silent movie ‘Nosferatu’ for the Filmmuseum and they can often be seen at film nights at WP8. Love Machine illustrate perfectly that Düsseldorf consists of a lot more than just Kö and Altstadt. That is almost reason enough to love this band!

MOGLE BAUM FOUNDED 2015 FAVOURITE MUSICIANS FROM DÜSSELDORF GRANDBROTHERS CURRENT RELEASE GROWN HEART FAVOURITE LIVE CONCERT/VENUE ZAKK MOGLEBAUM.COM

In order to understand what Moglebaum means with ‘Organic Techno’, their self chosen music genre, you have to take part in a little accoustic experiment. Search online for the current album of the band (‘Grown Heart’) and click on the song ‘Slow Love’. Important: close your eyes for the next three minutes or so. In your mind a thousand images soon emerge. A scene from nature ... birds, sitting high up in trees, catching the sun on their beaks.

A gurgling stream, meadows green with moss and glimpses of the wide blue sky between the treetops. This is being brought to life by a power- and soulful voice. Flickering beats drive it forward and synth sounds along with a weaving saxophone bring it up, up towards the light. At the end of the song you can quite literally feel the morning sun on the tip of your nose and the sensation of having a deep understanding of the Moglebaum universe. This is what make this five piece band so special: they don’t only make music, but create an atmosphere which is set apart from the ordinary, every day world. They basically create an symbiosis between the electronic and the accoustic, technology and nature. So here is an idea: next time, before you’re going for a stroll through Grafenberger Wald or are out to see the shores of the Unterbacher See, download the album. Then find a cosy spot between some trees, switch your phone to airplane mode and enjoy some real nature in combination with a bit of Organic Techno. I promise, it’s a treat!

When talking about BAR one does not only have to mention their concerts, in which they wear costumes by the Düsseldorf-based fashion designer Marion Streh­ low, but especially their video clips. Who else still produces music videos today that do not follow the rules of impatient YouTube users? The clips of BAR are a continuation of their music by different means. They are also a very aesthetic

matter, be it ‘Adios’ or ‘White Noise’, which could easily be exhibited at the ‘Julia Stoschek Collection’, the tuckedaway little gem for international video art in Oberkassel. It is also somewhat befitting the image of the city that singer Christina Irrgang is an art historian by day. Her partner Lucas Croon, the man with the synthesizer, actually belongs to the band ‘Stabil Elite’, which has in the past years oscillated between Krautrock, New Wave and Yacht-Pop. With their electro-pop, somewhere between Air, Propaganda and Kate Bush, BAR fits perfectly into the electronic heritage of musical Düsseldorf, which is permanently defined and redefined at Salon des Amateurs.

By the way, the band name does not consist of three letters by chance. It pays homage to the band’s musical heroes Neu!, Can and DAF. Accordingly, BAR simply stands for ‘Band am Rhein’. Watching Irrgang/Croon at one of their concerts, you might inevitably be reminded of ‘Bakerman’ by Laid Back, at least when you’re old enough. The spirit of the 1980s also carries over to their work, and this, of course, that has a lot to do with Lucas.

Carmen Brown is the tallest short woman of the city. The energy she carries onto the stage as a solo artist or as a singer of Gato Preto never fails to impress. Where to find her performing in town? Mostly at the KIT (Kunst im Tunnel / Art in the

Tunnel) Café. She is singularly responsible for people breaking a sweat and the guarantor of well-filled dance floors.

Henry Storch, the Düsseldorf-DJ-legend who died much too early, released the debut album of Gato Preto in 2017 under his label Unique Records. Gato Preto have performed throughout Europe, in South Africa and Uganda. So, a Düsseldorfer record company getting the gig was a big surprise at the time. Gata Misteriosa is the new name Brown has given herself in this universe, and she and her musical partner, breakbeat producer Lee Bass, are known to European club audiences as an international flying circus. They describe their sound with the beautiful term ‘afrofuturistic’; Organizers speak of ‘Global Pop’ and the musicians would confidently agree to putting ‘Global Bass Traveler’ on their business cards. Their personal roots lie in Mozambique, Ghana and Portugal.

But in Düsseldorf they have found their musical home.

He runs ‘Selfmade Records’, the most successful German hip hop label of the last ten years where rappers like Kollegah, Genetikk, Casper or the 257ers are or were under contract.

With his new label ‘Division’, he is responsible for RIN who represents a new generation of German hip hop artists. He is also the ‘President of Rap’ at Universal Music Germany, his fashion label ‘Pusher Apparel’ is selling like hotcakes and he has a private collection of sneakers and sweatpants. What drives somebody like Elvir Omerbegovic? THE DORF met the 37 year old at his office in Düsseldorf.

“It is important to me that somehow something clicks when listening to an artist the first time. It is almost like falling in love.” greatest impact on me. Also, I listened to N.W.A and other Westcoast-artists a lot. However, the Wu Tang Clan was the first rap crew of which I was truly a fan. Funnily, in 2013 we recorded two songs with the clan members, with RZA and Method Man. They were almost all in our studio and office. In the evening, we somehow ended up at the Rudas club. I stayed in touch with GZA for a while because we got on really well. It was quite funny, even if by then they were (and still are) mainly cult figures.

THE DORF You grew up in a socially disadvantaged area in Mettmann, is it ok to describe it like this?

ELVIR OMERBEGOVIC I grew up on a council estate in Mettmann. In Mettmann, there were three so called ‘ghettos’ — that means: all social housing, high percentage of foreigners, high unemployment — the usual factors.

Would you say that it had an impact on you, if so, how?

EO Retrospectively, that isn’t so easy to say. There is only the one, subjectively perceived childhood.

There was quite a lot of violence. I know a few people who grew up with me, some of whom went to prison for serious crimes. I witnessed stabbings and family tragedies, the flat beneath ours was once set on fire, for example. Later I went to grammar school in a ‘rich’ neighbourhood. There I realised that a different life is possible, less stressful and more positive. It was nice to see and offered new perspectives to me. It can make a child very anxious when parents lose their job. This contributed to me thinking: If I get the opportunity, I’ll work hard enough to make sure it doesn’t happen to me. I also got into sports early on — it was a good way to stay away from the troubles on the streets.

How did you get into hip hop?

EO I think I started listening to hip hop when I was 13 or 14 years old. Before that, I listened more to metal and punk, Slayer or the Ramones, also due to the influence of my older sister. Then came a Guns n’ Roses phase. Rock. Metallica, also harder stuff. And then came rap. ‘Enter the Wu Tang (36 Chambers)’ was next to Notorious BIGs ‘Ready to Die’ one of the records that had the

What was the first record you bought?

EO I think it was Guns n’ Roses ‘Appetite for Destruction’ or something from the Ramones. Other than that, I was rather recording songs from Yo MTV Raps on VHS and then taped them. I didn’t have the money to buy records all the time. Back then, there was a lot of good music, also because it was more difficult to get a record deal. Today, everybody has the opportunity to publish music.

Qualitatively speaking, there is a lot of rubbish out there. I try to stay away from that, even though there is a lot of money in it.

And when did you discover German hip hop?

EO That was a lot later. German hip hop was never really my thing because I was listening to more hardcore stuff. Until then, in terms of German hip hop I had only seen Fünf Sterne Deluxe and Bo on TV and that was definitely too shallow for my taste. In comparison to US rap, this was simply boring. Then I met Creutzfeld & Jakob personally and was surprised how good their music was.

That was a turning point for me, when I thought:

of surface for projection. I like that the scene has more of a focus on atmosphere and music now.

After 13 years, it did get a bit boring to always listen to technical rap. I think it is great that teenagers, the new generation, are shown it is ok to have emotions. It is ok to be sad. It is ok, even beautiful, to be in love. These emotional components were turned off for a long time. With RIN we have 50% of female listeners, that is more than double of what we had in the past. It is fun to listen to these raw emotions. But both have equal rights to exist.

It is possible to make good hip hop and rap in German. From then on, I accompanied them often. It was a bit the pendant to the East-Coast hip hop that I liked. I met Bushido via them who visited me at home with Philipp at some point. That was before we founded the label, so roughly in 2003. He had just published ‘Vom Bordstein bis zur Skyline’ at Aggro Berlin. The record was very good and the visuals were amazing.

TD What do you focus on more in German hip hop: on lyrics and flow or on beats and production? Could you determine what is more important for you?

EO This is in a process of change at the moment.

My acts vary hugely in that respect. In the past, it was a lot more important to me that an artist had an incredible ability to rhyme technically. Like Kollegah, with double meanings etc — real rhyme art.

With Favorite it was the same. Then I pushed the technical rap. Even though in the ‘Berlin Phase’ it wasn’t all that important, it was all slightly more rough. It was more about funny or shocking content. Lyrically, I’d say, we were driving a Ferrari.

This had a big influence on the scene and young emerging artists. As a result, it all became more technical. Nowadays, I enjoy not focusing on each word so much anymore but on offering a new kind

TD With RIN it is now similar to how it was with Kollegah, Casper or 257ers at the beginning, it is new and in Germany listeners are not always ready for something different, right?

EO Not everybody has to be excited by our music.

They don’t have to like what we do. We don’t have to please everybody. On the contrary. We make ourselves happy. I am not keen on ‘let’s find the common ground’ in my life. If you don’t like it, you don’t have to consume it. If you try to make everybody happy, you end up with Helene Fischer.

My mum listens to Helene Fischer. I was with my mum at the Helene Fischer concert. It was really tough for me to endure that. We had our own suite, courtesy by the organiser. My mum hated that of course because she wasn’t close to the stage (laughs). Well, I was parking at the VIP parking lot and some fans somehow thought I was Florian Silbereisen (laughs). That was horrible. But hey, purely on a technical level, the performance and show were great. I cannot listen to that music for more than 3 minutes though. Never mind, mum was happy!

How many people are working at Selfmade Records?

EO The core team consists of four people. And then there is staff from Universal Music in Berlin, e. g. in distribution and other areas. Usually more than 20 people contribute to a project. But we make the records together with the artists and all the important decisions are made independently.

TD Division is a new label, with which you released RIN as well. Why did you found it?

EO I did that because there currently is a generational shift happening in the hip hop business.

Selfmade Records has its own fan base just like

Def Jam in the States. Selfmade is its own brand.

I wanted to avoid for RIN to be immediately associated with that and create a new playing field.

TD What exactly is your job at Universal as ‘President of Rap’?

EO Universal and I have a joint venture. Aside from that, I am a consultant and my advice is sought for larger deals — with acts not related to Universal.

Theoretically, you meet many potential partner and there are a lot of rational reasons why a partner would be great. But you either feel it, or you don’t. This is more or less how I sign acts. With the added advantage of being able to work on their careers as well. Regular A & Rs (Artists & Repertoire, the editorial part of a record label, note from the editors) at large record labels aren’t usually able to do that.

Don’t you get in each other’s way sometimes?

EO In those cases, the faster one wins (laughs). However, it is often the case that I pick up the acts much earlier. For example, Kollegah didn’t have a record released yet, Casper had, I think, a mixtape out, and RIN also didn’t have an album released yet.

TD How do you come across those people? Do friends pass tapes on to you or is stuff send to you?

EO That varies greatly. It is an advantage that our history speaks for itself. Young talents know our work of recent years and were fans themselves.

WHAT BOOK IS ON YOUR BEDSIDE TABLE AT THE MOMENT?

How do you recognise a talent?

EO That is difficult to say. There isn’t a set of rules.

How about some female talent?

EO I would really like to work with a female artist. However, so far I haven’t come across a female rapper that has had this particular effect on me.

She would have to impress just like a male artist has to. Then I would be up for it for sure. Nowadays, we could also work with crossover acts not only straight rap.

Was any of your artists ever a flop?

EO No. Sure, there are differences in record sales.

We are a record label that has an unusually high success rate. No other German hip hop label has produced as many gold and platinum artists. For a number of years, we operated that way, from record to record.

What do you listen to in your own time?

EO I actually listen to everything. A good song is a good song. I listen to very little electronic music. I don’t really get house, it is too soulless for my taste and I don’t take drugs. When working, I probably listen mostly to the Spotify playlist ‘Calm Vibes’. I also like to go to the opera.

Metallica and Drake were the last non-work related gigs I went to.

How would you describe your personal style?

EO Casual urban. I mostly wear sweats and sneakers. Almost always. Also because I exercise a lot.

People look at me funnily, a number of times I was asked whether I was a footballer (not sure whether I should take that as a compliment). I don’t like to pretend, I go like this to clubs and to business meetings.

When you are looking for something particular, that can be a challenge. I recently bought the Adidas Futurecraft 4D Runner for 2000 Euro.

Currently, there are only 9 sample pairs in the world. Well, they will probably become cheaper whenever they are on the market. But so far it is not clear when that will happen.

TD How many sneakers do you have at home and what is your favourite one?

EO I own more than 100 pairs. Most of them are Adidas Ultraboost 1.0. They have the best collaborations and design, many are by now super rare.

Worldwide, there are 1500 pairs and in my size probably only 200. It is nerdy, because nobody on the street would get it and in the end, it’s only for yourself. However, it is definitely culture.

Adidas disrupts the sneaker market with its technical innovations in particular. I am slightly frustrated because with this knowledge, I should have invested in the Adidas stock. It increased by 30 % last year. I only had the perspective of a fan and didn’t see beyond that.

Kaspar van de Water Kaspar van de Water is the brain behind Callshop Radio, a radio station, that is on air since April 2017. Together with Fernando Diaz, he founded the radio station following the example of independent online stations like NTS Radio and Red Light Radio from London and Amsterdam respectively. A key aspect for the founders was to achieve the greatest possible freedom in creating the shows. They develop the programmes themselves but also invite others to collaborate.

For a while it was difficult to find a suitable studio. But at long last, the musician, who also plays saxophone and works as a DJ, found one in the backyard of the ROOOOOM, an interdisciplinary community of galleries, studios, offices and workshops, nearby Worringer Platz.

What is the difference of Callshop Radio from other radio stations?

In comparison to other regular, commercially operated radio stations, the Callshop Radio is certainly distinguished by the diversity of the programme. There are no playlists that are endlessly on repeat. By daily changing guests, we rather try to support and play a wide range of music. If you compare Callshop Radio to other online radios, I’d prefer pointing out the similarities. Whether it’s Dublab, Radio 80000, LYL or Red Light Radio, they all care greatly about music and the bringing together of music lovers who think along the same lines. I am excited by their motivation to work together and by the comparatively little importance of competition.

What does a typical day at Callshop Radio look like?

The day gets usually off to a late start. Shows are Tuesday to Friday from 9 pm. The radio has found its home in the backyard of the ROOOOOM. That means, aside from DJs who record a show, you meet freelanced artists, graphic designers, tattoo artists and writers. Quite often we discuss the next joint projects during a radio show. However, there is a lot to do for the Callshop besides the evening shows. Shows need to be edited and uploaded, the programme for the coming months needs to be planned and curated, events prepared, the website updated etc etc etc.

Which artists have influenced your taste in music the most?

There isn’t only one taste in music. I started to engage with music intensively 10 years ago when I joined the band Mighty Mammut Movement as a saxophonist. Back then the focus was on hip hop and reggae. Jay Dilla, Ini Kamoze and the whole melting pot music from Cologne was and still is exciting. As part of Markant, I came across electronic music. I quickly discovered that there isn’t just one direction in music. I remember a set by Orpheu the Wizard and Tako in the Salon des Amateurs that inspired me to investigate current music as well as the music of the past 40 years. Düsseldorfer labels like Aiwo of TFGC also shape my music taste. Overall there are very many influences!

Where do you find new music?

I listen to many radio shows on the internet, LYL Radio, NTS, nowadays there is a large offer available. Obviously, I also still check out the classic sites like Discogs. When I am out and about in other cities, I really like to go to record stores. It is a lovely way to discover a city.

Was it ever option for you to leave Düsseldorf? Why did you stay?

There were always reasons not to leave town. First the band, then Markant, now Callshop Radio and last but not least my studies. However, I am not ruling out looking for adventures elsewhere at some point. The planning for a Callshop station in Paris is currently in its early stages.
