Intro When we started the online magazine THE DORF more than two years ago, a print product was on our wish list from the outset. Even though T H E D O R F was launched digitally, we love the smell, feel and look of paper hot off the press.

What could be nicer than to leaf through the latest magazine on the weekend while enjoying a nice cup of coffee or to browse in a magazine store.

Therefore we are particularly happy that, as part of the #urbanana project, THE DORF can finally realize this longheld dream. The magazine is planned as an annual publication. Current news and stories are still published as usual on thedorf.de.

T H E D O R F · T H E M A G like the online magazine, presents the people of Düsseldorf who are as diverse as the city itself.

Naturally we are hoping to make people from other cities a bit curious, too — and to get rid off some of the most common clichés.

We see the magazine as a snapshot of contemporary, local culture. We deliberately avoid committing to anyone style because we love strong contrasts. A bit brash, a bit posh: we believe the fun is in the mix. Everything else would be boring.

Our editorial team only presents what it likes and has tried and tested personally. By friends for friends; the selection of recommendations is handpicked and by no means exhaustive.

The silver-grey roll-up door is being lifted after ringing Chris Succo Studio’s doorbell.

Behind the shutter appears a man with messy blond hair, all dressed in black and a band sweater.

Speaking of poetry; Art is not Chris Succo’s only activity. The Price You Pay For Not Being Alone With Your Dying is the title of the poetry collection he co-authored with his writer-friend Paul Wassermann. The two met in London in 2009: “I used to write songs and lyrics for the bands I played in, but I never reached the level of rawness that I wanted. It’s curious how the two of us achieve this level of immediateness — it’s like jamming with a band. It’s kind of a collage technique. We discuss story lines and sentences, and then an attitude develops that shapes the piece we’re working on. Some of the poems are romantic; others are quite harsh.

You have to read them with an open mind.” The first edition of 300 copies is nearly sold out.

We walk past a black Mini and a storage area towards the main studio with its red couch. A Thrasher magazine lies on the table, there’s also a box of Vans sneakers, a couple of skateboards, guitars, stacks of books and, surprisingly, a few boxes of Smythson stationery.

“A lot of the daily work is, believe it or not, ordinary office stuff like cataloguing and archiving”, he laughs.

Succo, who has shown internationally in New York, London and Los Angeles, is one of Germany’s leading emerging painters. His most coveted series of works, known simply as the ‘White Paintings’ have a spray-painted layer of lacquer underneath layers of white oil paint that allow for hints of color to shine through. Major collectors and MoMA trustees are buying his work and the waiting lists are long. “There are lots of things that go into a painting. It’s comparable to poetry. A lot is going on in between the lines,” Succo explains.

accompanying text to ‘Skin N’ Bones’, draws up a comparison to painter Philip Guston, who started out by creating abstract art and then shifted to a more figurative mode. Chris Succo’s work is currently at a similar crossroads. ‘Skin N’ Bones’ continues his quest into more narrative motifs. “In this new body of work Succo has found the potential for evolution, which was foreclosed in the necessarily circumscribed nature of his earlier series, both abstract and figurative. As such we view this exhibition from the perspective of being at the dawn of something, the ultimate conclusions of which are left open”, Bacon writes.

What Succo is preparing for Art Cologne at the time of this interview also affirms this bold move in his oeuvre: “The new work is not relying on aesthetic possibilities. It’s more revealing, it’s a new question”, he says, and laughs. “You have to forget everything. The thought of being successful does not exist in the studio. I’m happy as long as I can keep on working”.

They worked on the book for five years, they’re working on number two now: “I’m not a collaborator and Paul usually works on his own as well. We are both still surprised that it works out so well.

We both feel it refines how we go about our respective work.” For instance, most of the titles of his paintings like Don’t Let the Empty Cases Of Beer Fool You are actually sourced from the book.

Another of his main interests is music and he is in the process of returning to performing, currently founding a new band and a record label.

Succo’s latest exhibition ‘Skin N’ Bones’ opened at London’s Almine Rech Gallery earlier this year. With it, he has started to shift his practice towards a more narrative style. Black lines take the form of an afternoon at L.A.’s Gun Club or sunny morning at Chateau Marmont — memories of places and people he remembers from his recent work stay in L.A. and his travels. Alex Bacon, in the

Succo is represented by Almine Rech in London, Brussels, New York and Paris, as well as The Journal Gallery in New York. He is currently working on an artist’s book featuring an overview of his work from about 2008 – 2016 as well as photographs from his archive: “It’s going to be more of a book-like zine rather than a catalogue raisonné or anything like that”, he says. “It’s going to give you a good impression of what I’ve been making up to this point”.

“My own unpunctuality is my rebellion against my father’s punctuality”, says Gil Bronner when he walks through the door of his Philara Collection only slightly late. The former glass factory Lennartz that the property developer bought and rebuilt extensively over the course of two years lies in a shabby backyard off Birkenstraße. A sculpture terrace of 550 square meters will be as much part of the building renovated by Sieber Architects as the restaurant Glas Lennarz where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch or simply a glass of wine.

The heart of the collection are, of course, the works of art on display on 1700 square meters of exhibition space.

THE DORF Mr Bronner, how did it come that you ended up with the premises of the glass factory ‘Glas Lennarz’?

GIL BRONNER These premises were offered to me as part of my work as a property developer. Above all I bought it all because it was relatively far away from the Leitz factory in Reisholz (Editor’s note: where the Philara Collection had been located since 2006 until it was moved last year). I first viewed the three apartment buildings that were part of the premises and I found them in a relatively shabby condition. I thought ‘That’s not really my thing’. Then I came out onto the railway tracks at the back and the tracks were wildly overgrown with creepers. That was such beautiful sight I simply had to buy this piece of urban idyll in Düsseldorf.

What are the architectural features that you conserved?

GB I preserved this view to the tracks and the creepers. Where you see the window today, there was a red roller grill where the trains came in. We also kept the crane, last but not least for practical reasons.

TD

What are the renovation works that were carried out?

GB It was a balancing act — creating a place that we can use for museum purposes while maintaining its industrial character without accentuating this aspect too much. We installed new ceilings and partitioned the two storeys. In addition to that, we fitted the usual museum media: Lighting, video surveillance and a lot of cables as well as an underfloor heating and a new floor.

Why did you decide to exhibit your collection in Düsseldorf?

GB I am a Düsseldorfer, I was born and grew up here. I have my business here, I live here. That went without saying.

TD

Did you ever consider leaving Düsseldorf?

GB Yes, this question arises time and again. The later it arises in my life, the less it is likely that I leave. If I could choose, I would probably live in New York.

TD

Why New York?

GB Because I can identify with the city. I like the culture there and the New Yorkers’ attitude towards life. But maybe that is only a myth as well.

Anyway, I enjoy living in Düsseldorf.

TD You bought some 1500 works of art in the last 20 years, many of them from young artists of the art academy. How do you choose the artists that you promote?

GB In my opinion, this question should be differentiated carefully. It may be

considered as a promotion if you buy the works of young artists, but I rather see it as a deal that is mutually beneficial. However, the exchange program that we operate together with the Kunststiftung NRW is a promotion in my view. It has a completely altruistic intend and no compensation is expected.

In short: For me, purchasing the works of young art is not promotion.

TD Okay, let’s put it this way: How can art impress you? Is it an emotional or a rational decision?

GB It is a combination of both. In my opinion, you cannot learn a pattern of how to appreciate art. You cannot go to a seminar and learn that a painting is good if it is painted this way or the other. You must work that out for yourself. It takes time to train your eye and recognise quality.

TD

Where do you find new works of art or artists?

GB We live in an unbelievably marvellous place as far as exhibitions of contemporary art are concerned. There are the KIT, Kunstverein or Kunsthalle in Düsseldorf or collections and museums in Cologne, Duisburg, Leverkusen or Krefeld that also show very good, young points of view. We have an unbelievable variety of contemporary art that we can see here. In addition to that art fairs and the annual graduate shows. There I also see new positions time and again that I find amazing and that seem to have a long lasting appeal.

TD Did you ever see a young artist who immediately captivated you so much that you thought: This one will become a great artist?

GB Yes, sometimes I have had such moments. But that is an extremely daring statement, of course. The factors are very, very complex and strongly depend on luck. Andreas Schmitten could be such an example. I saw his graduate work and thought: ‘Wow, that’s really great’. Shortly thereafter, he took part in an exhibition by Tony Cragg and has had a great career ever since. But you cannot generalise that, and you certainly can’t recognise it at first glance.

What makes a great artist?

GB Somebody who delivers a good oeuvre for at least twenty years while reinventing himself time and again without leaving his way, and while remaining somehow recognisable and keeping a constant language.

Therefore I do not believe in collectors who create a hype around young artists only for the sake of financial gain. An early hype sometimes ruins careers rather than supporting them. In art, you simply need a fair degree of staying power.

TD

Which other collectors do you appreciate?

GB Harald Falkenberg, Christian Boros, Andreas Hölscher, Steffen Hildebrand.

There are so many. Julia Stoschek does a very good job. That is not my special medium, but she is a great collector.

TD

In which respect has the internet changed our way to deal with art?

GB This question can be asked regarding our whole life. For me as a collector it is such that I am sometimes offered art as a PDF and I buy it without having seen it in real life. I cannot acquit myself of any of that, much as I want to.

This is an effect similar to fashion that is nowadays often purchased in an online shop. The speed of information has increased in general. You get more

invitations than ever before. Everybody is available at all times and you are constantly bombarded with new impressions. As far as art is concerned: Ideas are no longer thought through properly. That is why I have often problems with post-digital art.

TD

Why exactly?

GB I think these are very often half-baked ideas. There are few artists who address politics profoundly.

TD

Should art be political?

GB I miss real engagement with politics in art. I am astonished that young artists are so unpolitical. In my view, the current geopolitical situation cries out for artistic confrontation. Maybe that has also something to do with the internet.

Everything is so fast and there is so much information that you cannot digest the events quickly enough.

TD

But that has changed since Donald Trump, hasn’t it?

GB In other countries — yes. In Germany art is shockingly free of politics. I think that is due to a certain bohemian laziness. I don’t claim that all artists are doing well materially, but they are not so poor that the level of dissatisfaction would lead to genuine social criticism.

TD

Are there no exceptions?

GB Yes, of course there are. Marcel Odenbach is one of the encouraging exceptions. I like intelligent art. I like it if a work of art has a history.

TD

When will the café ‘Glas Lennarz’ in the Philara Collection open?

GB We will open at Easter 2017. In addition, we are redesigning the terrace so that you can also eat outdoors.

TD

And which events do you plan at the Philara Collection in the near future?

GB The next exhibition will be Erika Hock, Thomas Grünfeld will follow in September. We also have some ideas for events: Concerts, co-operations with Schauspielhaus and Tanzhaus NRW. Art films shall be shown here as well — ­ we have a lot of plans.

Last words?

GB I have some, indeed. I am a very unpunctual person. Therefore I will invite to my funeral at 3 p.m. and have the coffin carried in at 3.20 p.m. For all those who always said: “He will be late even at his own funeral”, my last words will be: “Kind regards from Gil, he didn’t want to disappoint you”.

he represented pop and rock culture before it was en vogue.

She was avant-garde at a time when most people didn’t even know what the term meant.

Feminist and punk when it was not in fashion yet. Ela — everybody who is anybody in art or culture in Düsseldorf knows her. She was never just part of the scene — but one of its motors. Ratinger Hof, Academy of Art and Joseph Beuys — Gabriela Holscher-Di Marco, known as Ela, was part of it. And she still is!

This year she is celebrating the 40th anniversary of her concept store ELA selected. An absolute rarity, particularly these days when it is far from easy for owner-managed retail businesses to win the fight against the big online players.

Ela has always been keen on fashion.

It was not unusual that the former hairdresser spent 280 DM of the 350 DM that she earned for snake leather cowboy boots. In her early years, she used to work at the Breidenbacher Hof. Legend has it that she gave Mireille Mathieu her famous bowl haircut. And thereby one of the most distinctive looks of German music history was created.

In 1977, she opened her first shop on Gustav-Poensgen-Straße. Her son was still small, but it did not stop her from realising the vintage concept that focused on the 1940s, cowboy style, and work wear. Ela was one of the first to bring Levis Jeans to Germany. Something that was not available before. This mix was well received, especially in the Art Academy scene. Her shop became a meeting point of artists and musicians.

Art has been and continues to be part of her life. It has been and still is the natural, logical environment in which she moves.

Ela was young, beautiful and at the centre of it all. Her encounters with Joseph Beuys have shaped her thinking until the present day. Joseph Beuys developed an “extended concept of art” and invented the “social sculpture”. In addition, he created a furore with the statement that “everyone is an artist”. When he was fired from the Academy of Art in 1972, it provided him and his master students with even more room to manoeuvre. Their action and thought influenced an entire generation.

Ela was at the centre of it and has kept this attitude until today. The foundation of the worldwide reputation of the Düsseldorf art scene and its symbiosis with the Ratinger Hof helped to develop a scene that can only be compared to the New York of the 1980s.

There have always been different passions driving Ela resulting in this diverse mix. Neither would have worked without the other. In her boutique, she has always been working with artists, organising happenings and was cross-over before the term was even coined. Close friends with important artists from the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts, her shop is one of the first concept stores in Germany.

Jan Schüler, Frank Bauer and Achim Duchow of the Düsseldorf Academy of Art exhibited their work in the shop — nowadays their works can be seen in international museums.

From 1989 onwards, avant-garde became a major talking point. The entire concept changed and Ela’s was the first place in Germany where you could get the early Belgian designers. However, Vivienne Westwood, Hannes Roether, Gaultier, Bernhard Willhelm, Kaviar Gauche and Raf Simons and the limited premium line Levi’s RED should also be mentioned.

The promotion of young designers has been and still is a cause close to her heart. Ela was the first to introduce designers such as Henrik Vibskov or MM6 Maison Margiela in Germany. For young, emerging labels, Ela was the first sponsor who was courageous enough to represent the younger generation. Ela’s feeling for zeitgeist and change have made her store to one of the internationally best known boutiques. Like-minded people and retailers have taken on her vision.

After several other locations, Ela and her concept store moved to Fürstenplatz where she stayed for 25 years. In 2011 (after a short guest appearance on Hohe Strasse in Carlstadt), she ended up in Unterbilk on the former factory premises of the Liesegang-Projektion. With the workshop in the upcoming area of Unterbilk, Ela Holscher-Di Marco and her husband Antonio found the ideal space for their vision. Among their immediate neighbors are artists, designers and creative people, but cafés, restaurants, galleries and boutiques are also in the vicinity.

In 2012, her own label followed as a logical consequence. A collection that is definitely up-to-date due to its approach to make “the best fabrics and the best cuts” into “good” clothing beyond fashion trends. Circle, square, triangle, and cross are the basic cuts to which every piece of

ELA selected collections can be traced back. Clear geometric forms that dispense with classic dress sizes and are mostly gender neutral. The pieces are mainly one size and can be individually fitted by ruffling and tying. As to the material, the focus is on black in all its shades – and on a completely sustainable production in Germany. Gabriela Holscher-Di Marco has remained true to her concept — until today, collections for women and men of established labels and of many young designers are offered exclusively. And, in addition, accessories, magazines, perfumes, beauty and lifestyle products and art pieces such as the Kinderstern (Star for Children) pin — a charity project of the artist Imi Knoebel.

Hardly any person is as much subculture and Düsseldorf at the same time as Ela is.

It goes without saying that this woman is an inexhaustible source of exciting events and fantastic stories. A huge archive with pictures from various decades document Ela and the times from a very private and intimate perspective. Insights into her private life, photos of her first road trips to the United States in the hunt for original vintage pieces, or snapshots of parties and exhibitions. More stories, people and events that would normally fit into a lifetime. By a woman who impersonates lived feminism, art and chaos, music, culture and contemporary history. Who has always had an attitude towards politics and society and lived a totally wild life without being wild herself.

Gabriele Orsech didn’t like the way things were done at her old job, so she quit and took the business with her.

Fashion is a hands-on profession and that’s exactly what students learn at her Design Department Academy.

Here, she reveals her favourite places in Düsseldorf and what fashion means to her.

You were the artistic director of AMD for a long time, then you founded the Design Department. Why did you do that and why did you do it in Düsseldorf?

The system at AMD has changed. I missed practical relevance. That let me to my decision to found the Design Department. Virtually all teachers and students followed me back then. Therefore the choice of location was also obvious — it is here where I have my closest network.

What is the role of fashion in your view? For me, fashion is a cultural asset and an artistic-conceptual product. We try to communicate that at the Design Department.

What is its superpower? Fashion has the power to transform people completely. Fashion is not superficial, just because it is worn on the surface. It can paralyse or inspire a person. Visual things influence people enormously and deeply, fashion also gets under the skin.

Which designers and artists have had the longest lasting influence on you and your work?

In terms of fashion: The Belgians, Hussein Chalayan and Alexander McQueen. In literature, I would like to mention Henry David Thoreau, in music it is Van Morrison — I am probably his greatest living fan. Last but not least: The political philosophies of Karl Marx or Walter Benjamin.

Which design in general would you like to have created? I think I did create what I would have liked to create, in my own collection as well as in my trend publications and the designs of my students, with which I identify, of course. But if it is about which design performance of an individual person I admire particularly: Rei Kawakubo’s aesthetic of poverty.

And with which designer or artist would you like to have an Altbier in Düsseldorf? A glass of

wine. With Van Morrison.

What would you talk about? About the spirit of fundamental change of the 1960s. About the

burden of being famous. And about his artistic oeuvre. But I don’t think that he would talk about that — he is very secretive after all.

Germany & fashion: What is your message to the Germans? That is a question that has been asked for the last thirty years and it is getting a bit boring. I think that Germans have already much improved in terms of fashion and are on a good track. I wish that Germans were a little less pragmatic, a little less concerned with status and a little more aesthetically aware.

Market Life — The faces of Carlsplatz

Palma de Mallorca has its Santa Catalina market, Barcelona its Mercat de la Boqueria and Porto the Mercado do Bolhão. And Düsseldorf has its traditional and oldest weekly farmers’ market Carlsplatz. This is not just a great place for buying everyday groceries but it’s also one of the coolest places in town.

At more than 60 stalls you can find a huge selection of exotic fruits or regional vegetables, fresh fish, meat and poultry, oven-fresh bread and pastries, cheese or a diverse range of delicacies, sweets and coffee specialities and a grand selection of flowers and plants.

Carlsplatz is also well known for its delicious food stands: Enjoy a cold glass of wine and some great truffle ravioli at Casa Cortilla, have a delicious flatbread at Persian delicacy booth Fladi or eat a healthy falafel at Kavoosh Zia-Pour’s Falafel House. Meet some friends outside at Dave’s Marktlokal or for an Altbier at Dauser. For dessert, Pure Pastry has one of the most exquisite selection of patisserie and sweets.

The amazing culinary choices aside, it’s foremost the people working here that make it such a special and unique place.

Antonio Buntenkötter & Torsten Hülsmann Düsseldorf-born and bred, Antonio Buntenkötter and Torsten Hülsmann sought a new challenge in their culinary careers. After spending more than a decade in traditional restaurants, the two self-proclaimed food nerds worked together on a cookbook project in 2014 and decided to take their cooking skills to the streets. Serving Asian Streetfood like Laksa Curries, Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings and Chili Jam to hungry foodies, the two chefs, whose motto is “May the spice be with you” have found their calling. Next up: Strassenküche’s event series “Supper Club”. Stay tuned.

In your street kitchen you offer “taste experiences without a lot of fuss”— why do you follow this philosophy?

Antonio & Thorsten: We share the same philosophy as all the street kitchens of this world. It is about focusing on the essential — like Witzigmann already said: “The product is the star in the kitchen”. Good food does not need carrots cut into flower shapes, they don‘t add any­ thing extra to the taste. Therefore: Less is more. The taste, quality of the produce and craftsmanship are key.

Which of your recipes that you brought home from your trips to Asia are you particularly proud of?

Torsten: The Laksa recipe from Jimmy that Antonio brought back from his trip to Sidney. Apart from our first street food festival in 2014 at the Boui Boui Bilk, the start of the “SK-Strassenküche” for me will always be the day when I made my first curry past with pestle and mortar.

Which ingredients you cannot do without? Phew,

difficult question. Each ethnic cuisine is characterised by different ingredients, not to talk about cooking tech­niques, cooking utensils and energy sources.

Since South East Asia is a geographically very diverse area, our list will be rather long: fish sauce, shrimp paste, coriander, galangal, chilies, ginger, garlic, thick, thin and sweet soy sauce, fermented chili bean paste, cinnamon … you can also find the recipes on our website.

What would your last meal consist of? Antonio: The gnocchi from my grandmother with ragu bolognese (with a little bit of chicken liver) and some old pecorino on top. Oh wait, maybe also a bowl of Jimmy’s Laksa with prawns and some sambal aubergines? Well, how many courses could the last meal have?

With which personality would you like to share an Altbier in Düsseldorf? Antonio: Alfred Walterspiel. We talk about cooking, chefs, kitchens and how it felt to cook hundred years ago.

Torsten: I would to go for a drink with my mother who passed away far too soon, I never had a chance to do so. We would talk about the past 22 years.

What does the future hold in store? Will you continue your life in the streets or will you get a few plastic chairs (and a permanent location)? Antonio: The future will bring more spice and Supper

Club series in 2017. There, we will have some plastic chairs, Eames chairs, benches or handmade wooden stools but definitely no tablecloths ....

For our photographer Sabrina Weniger, tiny Wallstraße in the heart of the old town perfectly reflects the native and true Düsseldorf: a bit rough and eccentric, a bit chic and elegant, a bit old and dirty and most of all: with its heart in the right place. Even though it’s located directly in the city centre, it is easily overlooked.

Wallstraße is a historic place — it was built on the former city wall in the second half of the 17th century. That’s where the name comes from. The street has its own microcosm with all its different people from all over the world living and working here. Neighbourly support is taken very seriously here, everybody looks out for each other. Although there are four Italian restaurants within a stone throw of each other, there is no rivalry between them.

„He came from the countryside and decided to go and conquer the big city — or something like that. I love writing and everything that has to do with it: letters, words, shapes.“ This is how Tobias Saul describes himself. The 26 year old lettering artist Tobias Saul has turned his passion into his job. More than 65.000 subscribers follow his account on Instagram where the young artist frequently presents his works. Tobias illustrates logos and posters — many of which in the vintage style of the 1920s.

Therefore, hand lettering was the obvious choice as the focus of his bachelor thesis and he graduated successfully in 2015.

Tobi’s youth was characterised by graffiti drawings and the street art culture that comes with it, thus collecting his first experiences in illustration and lettering. Towards the end of his studies of communication design at the university in Düsseldorf, he discovered his big passion for hand lettering. His drawing abilities come in very handy as well.

During university Tobias worked as a graphic designer for the magazine “The Heritage Post”. There, craftsmanship and attention to detail were always the main focus for Uwe van Afferden, the publisher of the magazine. Tobias was greatly influenced by his time there and it showed him a completely new way of how to approach design.

Slowly but surely he started to show his own works online and not long after received his first assignments. Today his portfolio includes projects for VW, Random House Publishing, Ravensburger and Caritas. Together with the agency “smartin Advertising” Tobias recently developed a concept for designing the trade fair panels by hand for Edding at the Creativeworld Trade Fair 2017 in Frankfurt.

The US are the great forerunners in this design field. Partly this has to do with their strongly developed culture of the sign painter. World famous letterers like Jessica Hische and Jon Contino are also from the States and keep inspiring Tobias with their excellent work to this day.

“The symbiosis of craft and digital work makes the job really special”, says Tobias. Whether it’s a classic logo, branding or packaging design, the work always begins with pen and paper. The artist draws his sketches on a light table until the drawing is perfect. Then it gets digitalised with Illustrator and edited in Photoshop.

Tobias’ affinity with art and design is mirrored in his flat. Warm wood shades meet clear lines. In his high-ceiling apartment, some of the walls are decorated with his works. The focus is on the detail. Not only does the artist feel very comfortable living in Düsseldorf but he also enjoys the range of exhibitions the city has to offer. A walk through various museums and galleries in Düsseldorf often inspire new thoughts and ideas.

“...I came back, from Berlin, because I felt that I had a mission in Düsseldorf and that it really mattered whether I live in this city or not.”

When Laura Catania came to Düsseldorf to study, she didn’t plan on staying. Meanwhile it’s been nine years and she no longer has any intention of leaving. Why? Not only because her designs (corporate identity for the Philara Collection, website design for the Moholy-Nagy Foundation and Andreas Gursky, for example) are in high demand, but also because she recently bought a laundry machine. We met Laura not only for an interview, but also for a spontaneous night out and about Düsseldorf.

THE DORF You were born in Gelsenkirchen, but you are a Düsseldorferby-choice. When and why did you come to Düsseldorf? And why did you stay?

LAURA CATANIA Gelsenkirchen has only football, and when I gave up playing, it was clear to me that I had to leave! In 2008, it clicked. There were these studies in communication design that I completed relatively quickly after nine years. I didn’t stay, I came back, from Berlin, because I felt that I had a mission in Düsseldorf and that it really mattered whether I live in this city or not. That was different in Berlin. I love Düsseldorf ! Salon des Amateurs and Kunstakademie Düsseldorf were mainly responsible for that. I met virtually everybody who plays a crucial role in my life in these institutions or at least through them.

Which designer has had the most lasting influence on your work?

LC Thomas Spallek.

TD

Which design would you like to have created?

LC The corporate design of Volksbühne Berlin that the autonomous graphic design studio LSD developed in 1992. For me, it is one of the smartest designs for public institutions in the field of arts and culture in a city that was then undergoing a radical change (or is so permanently).

I wouldn’t say I would have liked to create the LSD design myself, but it has left a lasting impression on me and I admire it.

In the foreword of the book “LSD Berlin — Gebrauchsgrafik und Fotografie”, Diedrich Diedrichsen wrote appropriately:

TD Most recently you designed a website for Andreas Gursky. Which other artist would be the customer of your dreams?

LC Next to Andreas Gursky, the customer of my dreams would be Madonna.

TD And with which artist would you once like to hang out with in Düsseldorf?

LC Katharina Sieverding is a city’s best companion — no matter in which city. Apart from that, I would like to have a date with Trisha Donnelly sometime.

The melody was written, but the lyrics were still missing. London-based indie-band Teleman was touring Germany, when the lights of the city that were passing by in front of the tour bus windows inspired singer and songwriter Thomas Sanders to write the song “Düsseldorf”. It is now their most played song on Spotify – possibly thanks to a strong local fanbase?

Who knows.

By singing the song “Düsseldorf” you’ve become honorary Düsseldorfers. How do you feel about that?

Genuinely honoured. Being made to feel welcome and accepted is something that we need; humans are such social creatures and its always a great feeling to know you’re considered part of another clan so to speak. But coming from Reading, me, Jonny and Pete actually already have our places at the table in Düsseldorf; the two towns have been twinned for 70 years.

What is the song “Düsseldorf” about? What inspired you to write it? The song is a collection of snapshots

from our brief and only time in Düsseldorf. I had already written the music to the song but had no words. We were on tour with Metro­nomy in Germany and we happened to be driving into Düsseldorf when I became inspired by the passing city. Some of it is imagined, some of it is things that I saw from the window.

Have you been to Düsseldorf and what did you remember? What was the funniest thing you remember? I don’t remember anything fun about Düsseldorf. It seemed like a serious city, with a

fair amount of concrete, and it was quite grey. But perhaps that was just the area we were in, and as I recall the weather was quite poor. But the people we met that night were very fun and warm, very good people.

Your band name was inspired by the German composer Georg Philipp Telemann. Did you just like the funky name or are there other things you have in common with him? The name appealed because it felt good to say it out loud. And it didn’t have any specific meaning. Those were two things that we were looking for in a name.

What person, historical or contemporary, would you like to drink an Altbier with in Düsseldorf?

And what would you talk about? It would be a complete stranger who I met in a brewery. And it wouldn’t be one Altbier but many Altbiers.

What would you talk about?

We would talk to each other about our problems, hopes and desires; it would be a kind of therapy session. We would offer advice and help, and we would be very frank and open with one another because we knew we would never see each other again. I think the Germans and English have so much in common: a shared love of good beer, a very similar climate, a similar sense of humour …

I always feel very at home in Germany.

Greta’s Sister In December of 2016, the writer Christine Weissenborn together with her sister-in-law, the illustrator Sarah Neuendorf, published the delightful children’s book “Greta’s sister”. It is about friendship, freedom and a sense of adventure as well as courage, wanderlust, reunion and the colourful happiness that is family.

Exclusively for THE DORF · THE MAG the two of them have placed Greta, the whale and Anuk, the island girl, in Düsseldorf and tell the story of why Greta is swimming in the Rhine. And what carnival has to do with the South Sea.

How did you come up with idea to write a children’s book?

This has really happened by chance. We wanted to work together for ages, since we both have the greatest admiration for each other’s work. That’s why we started our joint blog gretasfreunde.de last summer. Because we felt like trying something entirely new with this platform, we started to tell the story about Greta’s sister in digital bits. The feedback to it was so good that it became quickly apparent: this is turning into a book. In addition, a serial story has its limits as a blog. Since the number of readers should ideally increase proportionally with each chapter, each new visitor to the blog would have to scroll back dozens of units at some point, in order to get the full picture.

Nobody does that, of course.

TD What is the main message you would like to get across with your story?

C & S We want to show children that nothing is more amazing than to discover the world. That we will grow big and strong if we dare to pack up and go to experience adventures, to deal with unplanned situations, to encounter different environments and foreign things, to accept homesickness. Especially with the current political shift in many countries, that brings us borders and isolation, we want to show the youngest ones that the world is too big and wonderful to break it into fenced and closed off pieces. It was also important for us to tell a story away from the ideal of a nuclear family. Anuk’s mother leaves the family in order to find herself. Very selfish. But also really modern for a children’s book character. Usually it’s the fathers who take off.

Or the mothers die. In our version, Anuk finds her mother in the end — but she has a new boyfriend. Father Fast Fish has to deal with it. A broken family. We describe that there still can be a happy ending for all and with everybody included, as long as there is one overarching main aim in the patchwork set up: a happy child.

What did you particularly enjoy while making the book?

C & S The complete emersion into a world of phantasy. To see how characters progress even if their development was originally planned absolutely differently. The huge enthusiasm of our families and friends for the project. Their never ending patience to discuss each draft and character. The willingness by all children we know to listen to the story again and again.

Christine Weissenborn was born in 1980 in Berlin, studied Languages, Economic and Cultural Studies in Passau and lives with her family in Düsseldorf. She works as a writer, editor and columnist for Handelsblatt, Wirtschaftwoche, Die Zeit and ZDF among others. Longer stays in Paris, NYC and Chile have caused a chronic wanderlust. That’s why she and her family toured several months in a camper van through New Zealand, Australia and once all across the US. Together with her sister-inlaw, she writes about the joy of discovering the world on the blog gretasfreunde.com.

Sarah Neuendorf was born in 1989 in Berlin where she lives and works as a freelanced illustrator. She studied Graphic Design and is a connoisseur of cacti. She is searching all over the planet for them but preferably in the Wild West.

Furthermore she is fascinated by the wonders of the underwater world, in particular by the environment of whales.

In her thesis at the Lette Verein Berlin, she illustrated the scientific novel “The Swarm”

by Frank Schätzing. Her label “Gretas Schwester” (Greta’s sister) and Greta and Anuk, the main characters of this book, were a result of this work.

ne morning, the ocean seemed particularly huge to Anuk, the island girl. The water stretched to the horizon and merged with the sky. Once in a while, a flying fish jumped out of the waves and mouthed a hello to her. On top of her tipi sat Uwe, the seagull, and stretched his wings towards the rising sun. Greta, the whale, had a little snooze among the waves.

Anuk was used to getting up early. When she was still living in her wigwam at the end of the world, her father Fast Fish made sure the first rays of the sun would tickle her nose. As soon as the sun was peeping through the clouds, he would open her tent at the beach in order to let the sunlight in. With that he gave her a coconut with banana milk and clapped his hands. “Get up, Anuk. The day is young. We are, too.

Early morning exercise!”

Then father and daughter would do gymnastics in the sand. They did somersaults, let their arms and legs swing through the air and played ‘Catch the feather’ until one of them would fall into the sand. On most days they finished their exercise with a big tickling fight. Anuk missed the joy of these mornings. Particularly today.

What was Fast Fish doing at this moment? Would he do the exercises in the sun without her? Would monkey king, her best friend, join him? Or chief Roaring Rooster who always kept an eye on his subjects living healthily and well. Anuk sighed. She loved to travel the world with Greta. However, on some days her heart would ache and she felt very home sick. Most of the time Greta managed to cheer her up quickly

by singing shanties in Whalish. Uwe, the seagull and roving reporter and by now part of the permanent crew on board, would croak the beat to the song. Sometimes other whales joined in the chorus. At times, it seemed as if the entire ocean would try to comfort her with an underwater concert.

But today the sorrow made her almost feel sick to the tummy, so just a song was not enough. This sadness pinched and pulled at Anuk’s happiness like a grumpy, old pirate. Then, as if she was awakened by girl’s sadness, Greta suddenly started swaying from one side to another, rolling with her fins, her head punching the water and shaking off her sleepiness. “Anuk, good morning little sister”, she mumbled.

Since the two of them, with the help of the monkey king, had beaten off the evil Bob Cash and freed Greta’s godfather Jonas from the throws of the crook, they were like sisters to one another. They figured a family could not be big enough. Especially when travelling. As Anuk noticed particularly on this gloomy morning.

She was happy not to be all alone on the big, wide sea but to be bobbing around on Greta’s back, sipping coconut milk. She trusted that her travel companion would quickly chase away the longing for home with a bunch of adventurous ideas.

There simply was no better remedy for homesickness. And as always, Greta did not let Anuk down.

“Anuk, I dreamed of a city by a water wide enough to swim across. There are beaches like in the South Sea as well as delicious doughnuts, round like a football and filled with the sweetest jam. And the best thing is: once a year, all the people of the town come together for a big party. They dress up and jump over tables and benches.

Just like home when the people of your tribe perform their famous rain dance.

What do you think, should we take a detour and look for this place? After all, travelling is all about adventure and spontaneity.”

Anuk listened as intently as Uwe, the seagull. The spirit of adventure was tickling her already. Uwe, the seagull, scratched his head with the tip of his wing and thought hard. “I think I know what this town is called,” he said after a while. “Greta, you dreamed of Düsseldorf. This is a place right on the Rhine, a huge river going right through town. It is also a good friend of the ocean. This fabled city has snow-white and silver round houses. There are also many bridges and a tower rising to the sky. But above all, there is the carnival. This is a celebration that is supposed to make the whole world happy. I once wrote an article about the many animals at this carnival. Lions, ladybirds, frogs, bees, whales, birds. They are all friends for a few days. Friends with each other and with the humans. They kiss and hug. They dance and celebrate. It must be a great spectacle. It is very far to get there though. But I think the trip is worth it.”

Anuk could not agree more. The idea was completely crazy. But a bit of fun every now and then definitely did not hurt. And the most beautiful things were always discovered when drifting off course. The island girl had learnt this much on her travels. Just how would they get to this city of fun? Who would be able to point the way for them?

“We need monkey king and his flying ship,” Anuk cried. “He knows all corners of the earth from his trips around the world as a young monkey.” Said and done. The three friends were buzzing with a sense of excitement. So once again, Anuk called her friend, the monkey king, and his crew for help. She did this by singing a song in Whalish that was passed on underwater in lightning speed by her whale friends.

The monkey king also understood the whale language. In addition, since the rescue of whale godfather Jonas, he had a flying ship sewn from tipi canvas that, when filled with volcanic air, was faster than any airplane. Anuk hoped that her friend would have time to help her and would be as keen on an adventure as she was.

he day passed without further events. The sun had hardly settled behind the horizon when Greta and Anuk and Uwe, the seagull, went to bed.

Excited. Full of anticipation. Would the monkey king come? He did.

At the crack of dawn, Anuk heard the familiar buzzing in front of her tent.

Then a splash. She peeped out of her tipi. A straw hammock was rocking in the water.

In it was a heap of sleeping monkeys. The tipi sail attached to the basket was slack in the water. Nobody would have expected it to carry passengers faster than the wind across the sea. The monkey king stood broad-legged like a captain in front of his snoring crew, and as soon as he saw Anuk sleepily emerging from her tipi, he shouted: “Where are we going, island girl? I’m ready for a new adventure!”

Anuk told the monkey king of her plan, the homesickness and the desire to go to this new place on the big river. “I know Düsseldorf,” cried the monkey king, after the island girl had finished. “I’ve been there and something crazy happened.

You’ll love the story. Get in. I’ll tell you on the way.” Anuk and Uwe, the seagull, got comfortable in the straw basket. The monkeys had woken up as well. The monkey king wrapped a thick rope around Greta’s flanks to pull her up. When everybody had

found a seat, the monkey king also got in. He whistled and the wind blew into the balloon straightaway. The volcanic air began to pulsate between the tipi sails.

The strange vehicle rose to heaven. It got faster and faster. Soon the sea shone beneath them only as a distant blue surface, and the travelling friends were roaring through the air. The monkey king had brought fresh pancakes as well as mango jam made by the island chief himself along with the most heartfelt greetings and kisses.

Anuk’s father took the opportunity to pass on some advice for the long journey: “Come back home soon,” was the first. “Remember the early morning exercises,” was another. “Drink enough hot coconut milk when the nights at sea are frosty,” was a third. The monkey king forgot the other instructions. After the formalities were exchanged and their stomachs filled, he told his story.

It was about the white whale, Moby Dick, a four meter long Beluga whale that got lost in the Rhine some years ago. It was actually destined to go to an English oceanarium. But on the journey there he went overboard and ended up in Duisburg, a small town next to Düsseldorf. The skippers who sighted him first and told the police about it, were initially declared to be drunk. Yet evidence was mounting. It soon became clear that a whale was indeed swimming in the Rhine. Newspapers all over the world reported about the visitor from far away. Belugas usually live off the coasts of Alaska, Canada and Russia. The spectacle thrilled young and old alike.

Unfortunately, Moby Dick also attracted rogues like Bob Cash who wanted to cash in on the fame of the ocean giant. For example, the zoo director of the Duisburg Zoo tried to catch Moby Dick by any means possible. To no avail. The whale tricked and deceived him with real skill. He always went diving when the villain approached.

The zoo director shot his tranquilizer darts into the air in vain. Attempts to catch him with tennis nets were also unsuccessful. “At last, Moby Dick was officially spotted to be on his way back to the North Sea,” the monkey king continued.

Since the Rhine was still very dirty at the time, he looked more grey than white by now. Fortunately, he found his way out after about four weeks. There was even a carnival song composed in honor of the famous visitor. The monkey king took a deep breath and began to sing: “What does the white whale want in the Rhine — He heard in the Rhine is wine instead of water — What does the white whale want? — We know for sure: — The white whale would like to be — happy for once.”

When he finished, the monkeys applauded. But the monkey king asked them to be quiet again. “What hardly anyone knows,” he continued, “is that Moby Dick did not go back to the cold of the Bering Sea but has settled in the North Sea instead.

He liked the climate there better. Fewer sniffels. More sunshine. Warmer dives.

No octopuses. I have therefore taken the liberty of sending a message to the white whale inviting him to visit the city of Düsseldorf with us. The Rhine is now so clean that it is suitable for swimming again. And Greta could use a little company by her own species. How do you like that, Greta?” He shouted at the whale dangling underneath the flying ship. Greta shook her flippers wildly as a sign of her approval.

And so it was that the travellers from the South Sea were awaited by a whale welcome committee when they landed. When Greta and Anuk and the monkeys finally landed on the Rhine at sunset, Moby Dick was already splashing in the water.

No sooner had the white whale learned of the planned Düsseldorf adventure, he took off to be part of the circus which surely be would caused by his friends’ arrival.

After all, Moby Dick had already some experience with the excitement a whale

visit could cause. He also knew a lot about Greta’s and Anuk’s adventures, thanks to seagull Uwe’s articles in various national underwater newspapers like Seaweed News and Wave Express. He really wanted to meet the two of them. The news of the exotic visitors spread among the people of the town like wild fire. There was another whale sighting in the Rhine. This time, however, it was a Beluga whale AND a Humpback whale. With a tipi on their back and a lot of monkeys in tow. The Rheinische Postille questioned on their homepage whether the whole world had gone mad, “Now we are really letting loose, Cologne go home,” wrote the Westphalian Nutcracker. The local blog ‘City, Country, Village’ came closest to the actual truth by simply stating: “Yipeeeh, carnival in the summer.”

Since the population of Düsseldorf never misses an opportunity to party and celebrate life, soon a large number of people had gathered on all the beaches along the Rhine. They made campfires under the starry sky. Music was playing. They danced bare feet in the sand. Wooden tables were laden with treats. There were, of course, the jam-filled doughnuts that Greta had dreamed of. The people from Düsseldorf munched Mutzen, local pastries typically eaten at carnival. The big bakeries of the city had quickly put lots into their ovens and offered them for free this evening.

There were delicious lemonades and Altbier, a dark local beer. Anuk tried the black drink by mistake and spat it right in the Rhine again. Not all the new flavours on her travels were to her liking.

But above all, the Düsseldorfers were as cheerful as the island people at home. Anuk’s heart jumped for joy at the sight of the many laughing and happy faces.

“Now go on land, island girl,” Greta gurgled. “Join the hustle and bustle. Let’s celebrate life tonight.” Anuk did not hesitate. The monkeys did not wait long either.

As if they had planned the shore leave for ages, they suddenly grabbed a paddle and rowed to the shore in the straw basket that minutes ago had just flown through the air.

Greta and Moby Dick, meanwhile, sent jets of water into the night sky and danced a moonlight waltz in the water. Anuk had never seen such a celebration. She sang and danced, drank and ate with all the strangers who, for one night, were now her friends. The next morning, as the sun was lurking over the edge of the cloud, one Düsseldorfer after another sank into the sand and went to the land of dreams. Greta waved to Anuk and the monkeys from the water. It was time to go back on board.

The monkeys could barely keep their eyes open. The paddles slipped out of their hands all the time. Anuk also hardly noticed how the monkey king got the flying ship ready for the onward journey. Again the wind blew. Again the volcanic air was whirring. The friends watched sleepily how Greta and Moby Dick were spouting some final jets of water, shaped as a heart, into the air (as it is common during carnival, they had come a little closer after dancing a night away together).

And by the time the flying ship took off and flew over the white, silvery shimmering, round houses, just past the top of the magnificent tower, Anuk and the monkeys were already fast asleep.

The next day there was a great confusion in Düsseldorf. What happened last night.

What had brought on the carnival in summer. Did it all really happen and was it not just a prank by their frenemies from Cologne? Anuk felt the same. When she woke up, the midday sun was already high in the sky. She lay in her tipi on Greta’s back. The whale was swimming toward the horizon. Uwe, the seagull, sat on the top of the tent and cleaned his feathers which were still glittering a bit with confetti.

There were no monkeys nor the air ship in sight.

“Was it all just a dream,” Anuk asked her travel friends, while drinking a cup of coconut milk. “You know, island girl,” said Greta, “sometimes on your travels, things can happen that are so incredible that afterwards you cannot say whether they really happened or not. But there is nothing more precious than the lifelong memory of them. You could not weigh it in gold. You’ve become richer tonight, rich in memories, Anuk. And less homesick. You will surely never forget the carnival in Düsseldorf.” “Greta is totally right,” Anuk thought, her toes still twitching in the rhythm of the carnival songs. And she was already looking forward to the next adventure.

Manuel Iljitsch To do him justice in just a few sentences is difficult. Manuel Iljitsch does a lot of things and he does them well: He makes funny videos, lends others his voice or face for money, more often he writes texts for advertising or for fun. Short stories, poetry, and most recently also a novel form part of his repertoire. In truth, this intro doesn’t serve him well.

At least we got a good picture of him.

And an exclusive preview of his very first novel which will be published soon.

Literature, film, advertising, ideas and concepts — it is not easy to categorise you and your work. How do you feel about categories in general? I think they

are okay and ultimately inevitable. The claim to be and to think beyond categories has become the most popular category of all nowadays. I guess many things would be much easier if I could, for a change, systematically restrict myself to one or two categories. People no longer know what they should buy me for, though I really want to be bought, but sometimes I don’t know myself what for. In any case, it would be ridiculous to associate my doing with some great pseudo-political idea of crossing borders. I simply get a kick out of many things, but not enough out of any particular thing to want to restrict myself only to that.

Why did you leave Düsseldorf? It was useful for business and social reasons to go to Berlin. Everyone says so, but in my case, it is true. Everyone says that, too. In addition to that, I was young, and when you are young you cannot stay at a place forever.

Do you miss the city? Yes, in a way. Recently more often.

If yes — what do you miss most? The Bistro Zicke. And Carlsplatz and the Japanese quarter, a few good people, the Rhine. That you can reach many places on foot, I like walking so much.

The aggressive geese around Schwanenspiegel whom I have always held in great respect.

Now I would sometimes be delighted if they stalked and mobbed me again.

In former times, people would have called you a “Lebenskünstler”, a master of the art of living.

Does that fit? I still hear that once in a while. I also like the expression — it somehow sounds like

old-fashioned romanticism, like living in an analogue world, like a smelly bon vivant who lives by his wits, every day, for a lukewarm cutlet and a glass of wine and a warm embrace where he can fall asleep, and the next morning, he gets up and decides what to do next. There is also an element of deceit and imposture involved — you can never be quite sure whether the guy is really a talented person or if he is simply lazy or both at the same time. Yes, somewhat I am, to a deplorable degree, such a guy. Clichés are, after all, there to be fulfilled. It really happens to me from time to time that I have only a hundred Euro in my bank account, and then I go out to eat and drink for a hundred Euro, and next morning I am hungry and have no cigarettes any more, then somebody has to invite me and give me a packet of cigarettes. And when I have money, I invite people so everything is fine.

What is the mission of poetry in your view? Oh, I have no particular theoretical ideas in this

regard. I think the times when poetry revolutionised entire countries are over. If they ever existed.

Is a hedge characterised by its dimensions and its chlorophyll production, or by the drunkard who pisses against the hedge in the morning, singing, after his girlfriend has left him? I don’t know exactly.

Ultimately (I am really a hopeless romantic) the ordinary posseses its own poesy. You only have to look at it from a slightly different angle. For me, that is a rather private pleasure — discovering the beautiful, the interesting especially in the small stuff, that upgrades life enormously. It is certainly nice, if somebody enjoys my bizarre views. But poetry is basically self-sufficient. Poetry has no mission, that is the great thing about it.

And the mission of literature? You always have to take care that it doesn’t sound too elitist —

I think literature should still chafe, urge, irritate, in whatever respect. Literature doesn’t have to be fascinating, does not need to pander to reading habits. And it must not degenerate into a cheap instrument of a feel-good flight from everyday life. I like it when a book screws me up, when it leaves me somewhat shattered, but some people may hold a different view under pastelcoloured cashmere, after work, with a cup of tea and a smooching cat.

With which author, no matter of what period, would you like to have a glass of Altbier in Düsseldorf? What would you talk about? I am probably supposed to say: with Bukowski.

But I think he is too busy, has not time to write quotable words on small boards in the kitchens of flat-sharing medics. Therefore I would perhaps make do with Max Frisch, and we would smoke and, exhaustingly and with a thousand detours, deplore the agonies of man that are our own fault, or philosophise the irresistibility of the horse’s tail and sublime jeans. Or with Robert Musil, but I would simply tell him that nothing has changed and that he can leave again. That is what he would certainly do, what does he have to do with me.

Does the world need more or fewer lunatics? Why? This is one of my favourite subjects, but it is also — let’s say difficult. What does lunacy mean in the first place? The poor guys in the closed institutions certainly have a colourful spiritual life, but they lack the literary distance to themselves which is necessary to find that fantastic. Genuine lunacy knows nothing but itself, has nothing to do with the rest of the world. Then you are absolutely alone, but you wouldn’t realise even that.

I think nobody wants that when reflecting on romantic associations with lunacy. It is more about a drive to more individuality — a touch of lunacy or better an isolated symptom that you have seen in a film or that you adopted. It ennobles every boring existence with a flair of the extraordinary, the somewhat meaningful, misunderstood. This kind of lunacy reflects the zeitgeist and is sexy, of course. This is based on the old misperception that lunacy and genius are the same. There is a connection, certainly. But it is not enough after all to adorn oneself frantically with the goodlooking features of lunacy.

Where do you see yourself in ten years? Oh, I don’t know exactly, neither do I want to know exactly. You would only get sad if it did not work out, and miss the nice diversions on the way from looking straight ahead too much. The main thing is — there must be plenty of love and good food.

The rest happens by itself.
