Australian drinks Awards 2016 promises to be best yet!

We’re counting down to the Australian drinks Awards, with less than three months until the winners are announced at the Sydney Cricket Ground on September 9. In less than a month, the judges will have decided on this year’s Australian drinks Awards winners. Last year, Lion won for Supplier of The Year and Jim Beam won for Brand of The Year. Can they take out those top accolades again or will it be another company’s chance to step into the limelight? The awards have come a long way in four short years and we can’t wait to celebrate the successes of our industry on September 7.

Brand Promotions scoops top award at the APPAs Congratulations to our associate member Brand Promotions on winning an APPA Gold Award! Brand won the Australian Promotional Product, Gold Consumer GWP Promotion award at the APPA Awards. APPA is the Australian Promotional Products Association and its annual awards night recognises excellence in the use and execution of promotional products in below-the-line activities. And, like the Australian drinks Awards, the judging is conducted by an independent panel of experts. Brand has previously won awards for gift with purchase promotions in infant health and FMCG, but this year it was an extremely successful promotion in the animal health space that scooped the big award. The judges said the entry was selected for originality of concept and great execution: “It was on brand, simple, logical and effective – a terrific GWP.” The client was Merial, one of the world’s biggest animal health companies, and the product was Frontline, a monthly tick prevention medicine. Frontline is a very successful mature brand, but there’s a lot of competition from new entries to the market. So the primary target was the existing client base. The company wanted to ensure that at the start of the tick season it hung on to its existing clients with a really good promotion. The result was the “safe card” for identifying and safely removing ticks from both animals and humans. An offer was created to buy three packs of Frontline and get the Safe Card for free. Consumers loved the offer and bought a whole season of product in that one promotion. Merial Australia (part of the giant French SANOFI

group) noted it was “our best sell-in ever in this very tough and competitive category and the best offtake result for this mature brand. Brand Promotions tuned in to our promotional needs and delivered.” Robert Orrell, Managing Director, Brand Promotions said: “We were very proud to win yet another APPA award – our job is to make the client/ brand manager the hero in the campaign and winning these awards confirms we’ve done our job well. “That’s the reason that we have chosen to be the Most Loved Brand sponsor at the Australian drinks Awards this year. And we certainly hope to be submitting a drinks brand at the APPA awards next year.” Find out more about how you can grow sales, increase customer loyalty and build brand dominance at www.brand.com.au

Catching up with the amazing Allan Sparkes Allan Sparkes is one of only five Australian heroes to be awarded our highest bravery decoration, the Cross of Valour. He is a decorated former police officer, a sailor who has crossed the globe, a survivor of PTSD and a best-selling author with Penguin Books. He’s also one of the drinks association’s favourite guest speakers. We were proud to host his firstever professional speaking event, a members’ annual lunch at Doltone House in 2011. Here’s what he’s been up to since then ... “The theme of that first talk was motivation,” Allan recalls of his first address to the drinks association. “It could not have been in front of a more receptive audience nor could it have been in a more dynamic location, the Sydney Harbour waterfront. “Since then much has changed, but all for positive reasons.” For a start, Allan was quickly snapped up after that drinks association speech by Claxton Speakers International as one of their exclusive speakers. Since then, he’s been engaged to speak at rewarding events all around Australia. In 2013, Allan’s book, The Cost Of Bravery, was published. In it, he recalls the harrowing events that lead to him being awarded the Cross of Valour. He rescued an 11-year-old boy, Jai Waddell, who had been swept by floodwaters into a drain on the NSW North Coast. During the harrowing search for Jai, Allan thought he was going to lose his own life in the drain. “Suddenly, in my torchlight, I saw something - a little

face,” he writes. “Only the face, so white it was like the face of a tiny ghost. I was yelling to him, ‘Hang on, mate! I’m coming, I’m coming!’ Jai was hanging on to a piece of timber that appeared to have got wedged across the pipe. ‘Jai!’ I screamed. ‘Come to the light. Let go of the timber and come to the light.’ “I was exhausted and my fear that he would be washed away was getting stronger. I had hardly anything left. “Finally, Jai let go of the timber and I saw him coming towards me. Oh my God, oh my God. ‘I’ve got him,’ I screamed down the pipe. Jai washed into me and I folded him up in my arms. ‘You say thank you, God,’ I said. ‘Thank you God,’ he said in this little frail voice, shaking uncontrollably. He started to sob and my emotions overtook me. I held on to him, crying with him. I can’t put in words exactly what the feeling was like. All I can say is I have tears pouring down my face as I write this.”

hundreds of people? Yes I do.”

As a compelling storyteller, Allan will take you into a world of adrenaline, fear, achievement and redemption. His passion will leave you holding your breath and wiping your eyes – not with sadness, but with happiness, sharing in the joy of what he has achieved and how far he has come and leaving you truly inspired.

“I have been a beyondblue Ambassador since 2013 and A Soldier On Ambassador since 2014,” he says. “In December 2015, I was made an Australia Day Ambassador.”

“My areas of speaking have evolved from motivation and inspiration to also include presentations on personal and professional resilience as well as leadership and teamwork in high risk environments,” he says. “Do I still love what I do? Absolutely. Do I still get super excited at the prospect of speaking in front of

Why Cisco was named Aon Employer of the Year 2016 Cisco Systems took out the title for best employer at Australian drinks Awards corporate partner Aon’s Best Employers awards lunch held in Sydney in June. Here’s how the winners stacked up. “In a fast-changing environment, developing a culture of trust and transparency, along with workplace flexibility, gender equality, recognition of achievement and philanthropic programs, has enabled strong business performance,” Adrian West, Cisco Systems head of HR Australia and New Zealand, told Channel Life. Nielsen partners with AdAs for fourth year the drinks association is proud that Nielsen has been a Corporate Partner since the very first Australian drinks Awards in 2013. “Taking my seat in the Grand Ballroom at The Star, it was clear that the Australian drinks Awards were going to be a night to remember,” Chris Percy, Managing Director for Nielsen in the Pacific region, recalled after that inaugural awards night. “The audience was buzzing as we waited with anticipation for the night to begin. Although Nielsen had completed the research that would deliver the consumer brand awards, the results had been kept completely secret. “Across wine, beer, cider, RTD and spirits, we applaud those who consumers choose as ‘best in class’ for brand, innovation, social media and advertising campaigns, as well as recognising the best contributor
