ello and welcome to March. Where does the time go? Hopefully the same place as the cold weather of the last couple of months. ‘Brass Monkeys’ as my grandad used to say. He did keep some strange pets though. So maybe? Anyway, I hope this finds you well and ready for the next instalment of what must surely by now be a prime candidate for a Netflix series. They’ve got everything else, so why not a gripping drama about life as a satellite TV installer and monthly columnist? I should think a 3-series commission and a stand-alone film deal should be easily achievable. I imagine Ryan Reynolds would play me, as he’s probably nearly as handsome as I am. That said, Mrs W did suggest Susan Boyle instead. These things need to be accurate, she told me. That hurt… I know I say it every month, but Freesat is not the same as Freeview. The clue is in the name. If your receiver doesn’t have a threaded screw connection on the back then it’s not a satellite receiver and is no good for the reception of UK TV. You may have discovered this already, but BBC3 is back on regular TV. It was moved to iPlayer around 6 years ago despite being the only BBC channel that had any decent comedy. However, it’s back now. BBC3 HD can be found at channel 107. This does of course mean that some other channels have moved position. Your receiver should find this automatically but if not, you might need to do a Freesat channel scan to make sure that everything is up to date.

If they are 20cm by 20cm, that is known as VESA 200 x 200. Basically, the VESA numbers are in millimeters. Secondly, ensure the bracket leaves enough space between the TV and the wall for all your connections (scart leads, HDMI cables etc). Some are very slim and can position the TV only a couple of cm from the wall. Great, but not if you don’t have downward facing inputs on the TV.

If you have a generic FTA receiver then you will need to perform a fresh scan, you should find that BBC3 then appears. Just following up on something I mentioned a few months back. I’m not a huge fan of the new Freesat+ recorders, but I have discovered that they seem to be far more reliable when used with a standard twin output LNB as opposed to a wideband LNB. This does mean that you can record fewer channels at the same time, but it also means that the unit itself seems to work properly. It should be fine with a wideband LNB, but experience tells me that many units don’t play well with them. It used to be that wireless TV transmitters were a good option if you wanted to send the signal from your satellite receiver to a second TV. Well, as we know, technology waits for nobody and now, the popular method is either by RJ45 (Ethernet cables - the things you use to connect your PC to a router perhaps?) or better still, by CPL. This system uses the electrical wiring in your house to send the signal from one location to another. It’s all very clever. Only works with an HDMI output though. The downside of wireless transmitters these days is the risk of interference with 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz Wifi transmissions. Don’t forget that whilst I cannot supply Neosat from Nordnet (satellite internet), I am happy to install it for you. You get the kit, I’ll climb the ladder. A little off topic perhaps, but it is worth remembering that if you plan to wall mount your flat screen TV, you need to ensure you purchase the correct mounting bracket for it. ENJOYING FRENCH

his will be the last article in my series about reading and enjoying French-language books, not because there are no more to be reported on, but because enough is enough. During the past weeks, I have read a couple of books (in e-book format) originally written in English that are part of a series I had bought years ago as paperbacks in a French translation. After those first two, I wanted to read a little further in the series and found the paperback French version in my library. And so I continued my reading. I found the original English versions more trivial than the French translations, but it has to be said that, although I enjoyed reading it, I was obviously missing some parts of the French. Reading a paper version was irritating insofar that holding the book open was tiresome and pages could not be turned with a flip of one finger. The worst was not having immediate access to the dictionary and Wikipedia (but that irritation applies only to fiction leisure reading, with no illustrations or diagrams; trying to take notes from a reference book while reading it in e-book format is tiresome indeed – so much so that I have stopped buying e-book non-fiction). The three female authors I am writing about here cover,

respectively , the period just before the French Revolution, the middle of the 19th century, and the present day (for a change). All concern detection in one form or another. Anne Villemin-Sicherman Series “Les enquêtes d'Augustin Duroch” The author comes from a family of generations of vets, and although she was a gynaecologist in her professional life, her series of books concerns the life and times of a vet (artiste vétérinaire), Augustin Duroch, in Metz during the 20 years running up to the French Revolution. The author uses complex investigations by the vet of real historical situations to give a very vivid impression of life in the border city and the intrigues and types of crime of the times. In the first book, the young Augustin takes over the practice of his

father, who has just died in an accident. He finds a protector and client in a local official and meets the teenager who will become his wife, as well as various other personages, including a co-investigator in the form of a young woman from a noble family. As the series progresses, there is more and more involvement in the lives of not only country folk but also the nobility, and in the schism between the two. The last book takes us into the revolutionary days, and I have stopped reading the series for a while because I anticipate the death of some of the characters that I have followed and appreciated through the eight books I’ve read so far. One of Augustin’s protectors has already fled the country, and I am curious how the author has handled the rest of the cast in those troubled and violent days. Irene Chauvy Series “Les enquêtes d’Hadrien Allonfleur sous le Second Empire” In June 1859, Lieutenant Hadrien Allonfleur is severely wounded during the battle of Solferino, and while he is being cared for, one of the nurses, Sister Josépina, is brutally murdered. Hadrien applies himself to finding the murderer and, succeeding, finds himself somewhat later falling under the notice of Emperor Napoleon III and being appointed as capitaine of the Centgardes squadron (making him the emperor’s official investigator). From here onwards, there is a series of a further six books of investigations conducted by Hadrien. Hadrien is not what you might call a typical investigator/ detective – he is boastful, rather proud of his position, and “one for the girls”. However, he is also diligent, honest, and loyal to his emperor, and his character rather grows on you as the series progresses (in fact, he reminds me of Brigadier Gerard in the novel of the same name by Conan Doyle). He has his friends and loves, and there is a mystery in his family background. In his adventures, he is assisted and advised by an old, morose ancien inspecteur de la brigade de Sûreté parisienne called Amboise Martefon, who also harbours a past that is only gradually revealed.

the child’s mother. Jane is drawn to the mystery of these deaths and starts to find out more of the circumstances. While doing this, she makes the acquaintance of l’inspecteur principal Lucius and his deputy, Vougeol – and a bit later, of public prosecutor Nathan Forève. The book proceeds to its inevitable end, that is, the solving of the crime, and leaves the reader waiting for the next in the series . The first book is probably the hardest to read – but all three are enjoyable. Both of these series by Irene Chauvy deal with political or social situations, and they are both complex in their reading – the Allonfleur one perhaps more so – but that does not detract from the enjoyment. Irene Chauvy has also written a couple of stand-alones and seems to be starting on a third series. Florence Clerfeuille Series “Le chat du jeu de quilles” Originally published in three volumes but now available under one cover, Le chat is a trilogy I really enjoyed. A journalist, 50 and gone, disillusioned with his job, leaves it and is shortly after approached by a young colleague, Manon, who wants his help to solve an old murder case. The adventure takes them to the Aveyron, where they are involved in the village intrigues and encounter a cat that seems to enjoy a game of skittles (as referred to in the title) . A book with light-hearted moments, a romance, and a serious crime being unravelled. I have not given a long résumé of the plot, because I read the books long ago and hesitate to rely on memory; however, the pleasure I had in reading them remains, and so I have included them in this article. While checking the Internet, as I often do when I am writing, I saw that there is a new adventure featuring the protagonists of Le chat du jeu de quilles, and this I shall surely buy.

Irene Chauvy Series “Les enquêtes de Jane Cardel sous la IIIe Republique” There is a prequel to this series – Maudit héritage – that starts in 1356, in the Cévennes, with a mysterious couple found in a charcoal-burners’ hut. The Vineyard Guys From Renovation to Fermentation by Rob Brimfield and Steve McMahon

We are delighted to welcome Rob and Steve to The DSM family You may recognise them from the Channel 4 programme "A New Life In The Sun" (2016-2019)

he renovations at Clos Vieux Rochers took a couple of years to complete, first the main house followed by the gites. This was at the same time as working the vineyard while being followed by “A New Life In The Sun” camera crew. It was hard work but fun seeing a project come to fruition. When you have a vision of how something could be transformed and what it would look like, to see it materialise is an amazing feeling and made the hard work so worth it. The aches and the pains endured during those days soothed by seeing your dream become reality. For us there are still jobs to do and the work on a vineyard never ends so there is more to come. The last couple of years have been different to say the least for everyone, this goes for us at Clos Vieux Rochers too. We have had more visitors from closer to home and as we all get used to living with the new normal of vaccinations and masks we look forward to welcoming a lot more this year.

If you had the idea that winter in the vineyard is a quiet time you would be mistaken, we have spent the last few months pruning, repairing and replacing the posts and wires. The pruning used to be gathered and stored for BBQ’s or burnt at the end of the rows. Now we shred them so that they degrade and put nutrients back into the soil. As the spring beckons we will soon begin tying down the vines before the buds burst and the vines burst into life for a new season. Everything will start to grow which includes the grass and weeds so a lot to be getting on with as the days get longer and warmer.

Fingers crossed we don’t see a late frost this year but with the ever changing climate, who knows. When it comes to wine many people struggle to know what’s a good wine? Do I need to pay a lot for a bottle of wine? Is one region better than another? There are so many questions and we will try and answer them. We are not wine snobs and never have been, our connection with wine over the past 40 years means we have seen the development of wine drinking and fashions over the decades. Current trends of wines like “Blush Rosé” for example and “Prosecco” have flooded the market. Like anything that is fashion related, normally the quality comes first and then the shelves are filled with some not so good examples. So how do you select a good wine? Whether a wine cost you 5€ or 50€ you need to ask yourself just one question, did you enjoy it? If the answer is yes don’t let anyone tell you its not. One thing I will say, if it is a red wine with a screw top….. leave it on the shelf! We don’t see them generally when we talk about French wine but there are many New World wines that are shipped to Europe in containers (giant bag in box) and bottled here, easy drinking wines yes, but without structure, made to a recipe to taste the same every time. Now if that’s what you like we are not going to tell you to change but stepping away from the comfort zone and experimenting a little may mean you find something special in that next bottle you pull the cork from.

This year, St. Patrick's Day will be observed on Thursday, March 17. Although the holiday originally started as a Christian feast day celebrating the life of St. Patrick and the spreading of Christianity to Ireland, today, it is a day of revelry and a celebration of all things Irish.

Rosewater & Raspberry Sponge Cake Yum Yum

225g butter , softened 225g golden caster sugar 4 medium eggs 1 tsp vanilla extract 225g SR flour For the rose cream filling 150ml double cream 1 tsp rosewater 4 tbsp raspberry jam 150g raspberries For the rose icing 175g icing sugar ½ tsp rosewater To decorate dried rose petals - handful raspberries Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. • Lightly grease two 20cm cake tins and line with baking parchment. Beat the butter and sugar together until pale and fluffy. Gradually add the eggs a little at a time. If the mixture starts to curdle, add 1 tsp flour. Add the vanilla extract, mix in half the flour, then fold in the rest. • Divide the mixture between the cake tins and bake for 20-25 mins – a skewer inserted into the middle of the cakes should come out clean. Leave to cool in the tins for 10 mins, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely. • Meanwhile, make the filling. Whisk the cream to soft peaks, adding the rosewater as you go, then fold in the jam, being careful not to over-mix. • Place one of the sponges on a serving plate and top with the cream mixture. Scatter with the raspberries, then top with the other sponge. • For the icing, mix together the icing sugar, 2 tbsp water and the rosewater, and stir in the juice from a few crushed raspberries. Drizzle over the cake, arrange the rose petals and the remaining raspberries on top and dust with icing sugar.
