ello and welcome to April’s column. I hope this finds you well and fully adjusted to the clocks having gone forward. I always find it amazing how resilient I am to gaining or losing an hour every 6 months. I wouldn’t call it a superpower as such, but it’s certainly something I take great pride in. Maybe you’re the same and I’m not the only one? Anyway, you’re not here to marvel at my powers, you’re here to read about the world of satellite TV and satellite internet. You’re not? You’re only reading this article because you’re waiting for your other half to be ready to go shopping and you’ve read everything else? Oh…#frownyface I know I say it every month, but Freesat is not the same as Freeview. Many of you with satellite internet are likely to be using the Tooway service from Viasat. If you are, then no doubt you will have experienced the major service disruption last month. This was a direct result of a cyber-attack which started on the day Russia began its invasion of Ukraine. So, not exactly the fault of the service provider. However, users of the Tooway service will likely have noticed how, er, rubbish it has been over the last 18 months. The Tooway service is becoming obsolete and no new clients have been taken on for nearly 2 years.

Can I use a signal splitter for my satellite cable? The answer is both a guarded yes, but a more forceful, please don’t. The universal LNB on your dish cannot supply all of the channels at any one time. Depending on which channel you pick, the receiver will send a command up the LNB to switch between a quarter of the channels at any one time. So, if you split the signal in the cable to a 2nd unit and that unit isn’t tuned to a channel in the same ‘quarter’, you’ll see the ‘No signal’ message. You might of course get lucky and find the channel you want is within that same ‘quarter’, but it’s not ideal. This is why it is better to fit a larger output LNB to your dish to allow extra cabling to come from it. This way, the 2nd and any subsequent boxes work completely independently of each other. So, if you rely on satellite internet but need a decent level of service from it, then I would point you (that’s an installer joke…funny lot aren’t we?) towards Neosat from Nordnet. It uses superior technology and offers average download speeds of around 70Mbps. This is excellent. Uploads are limited to 5Mbps maximum, but is more than sufficient for all but the most demanding users. You will however need all new equipment. The only reusable component will be the coaxial cable that runs from the satellite dish to the modem. As usual, the kit is designed to be of a DIY nature. However, for those who prefer not to install it themselves, we can do this for you. All that said, the Neosat service also suffered from disruption following the cyber attack, so nothing is perfect. Speaking of which, if you do decide to install your own satellite dish, remember that line of sight is key. Dishes cannot receive the signals from the satellite if looking at a wall or trees etc. Or, if they can still receive a signal, it’s likely to be of greatly reduced quality. Also consider that trees will likely grow and get leafier in summer. So, if you get a signal when the tree is bare, you may well lose it when it’s full of growth. Dishes can be mounted up high or down low, as long as they have a clear line of sight, it doesn’t matter. If you have one of the new(ish) Freesat boxes, not one made by Humax, and you accidentally press one of the streaming service buttons (Netflix, ITV Hub etc) you may notice that your receiver will no longer respond to the numerical keys on the remote control. As detailed above, a simple switch off and unplug should resolve this.

Introduction to Les Sibylles and Les Anges Musiciens

ife is full of random occurrences, which sometimes direct the future of entire families and more often that of individuals; how one met one’s life partner is one of them. The random occurrence I want to muse about here is stopping at a church during a holiday in the Pyrenees and having a casual look round. This was not an unusual happening because, as long as my wife and I have been together, we have spent our holidays in walled towns and looking at castles, abbeys and churches. Anyhow, walking by chance (as is everything in life) into this church in a small French town, Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges, with the mountains looming in the distance, a new interest was fuelled.

My first reaction, even before I came to appreciate the quality of the carvings, was “What a strange subject, in what was in the past a cloister and choir stalls that would have been used by monks.” That moment of amazement soon passed, as my wife, who, as usual, had found literature on the church’s history, had the explanation, or at least part thereof. The female figures were the 12 sibyls of ancient Greek and Roman history, but the reason for their presence in the church was not clear. Time was pressing, and so I digitally immortalised a few of the stalls for later perusal and we continued with our tour of the cathedral and its cloisters.

This old cathedral, with its tall, narrow, Romanesque nave, early Gothic choir and Renaissance choir stalls, almost exuded the faith of generations of worshippers; it was a moment to stand and wonder at the way the generations pass and, still, much of life remains the same. However, it was the choir stalls that took my attention – beautifully carved, there were 66 of them, and on closer examination, I noticed that the carvings were of stately women lightly

The next couple of days we were in Saint-Lizier and visited the cathedral Notre-Dame-de-la-Sède, with its magnificently restored, painted nave ceiling. There were also wall paintings of various subjects, but it was the ceiling that took most of my attention. The comprehensive guidebook had already told us that the figures were the 12 sibyls, and this time I carefully photographed the entire ceiling, panel for panel. That was twice in two days that we had come across

first appeared in late Romanesque and early Gothic churches and flourished for a while before “going out of fashion” again.

Subsequent research on the Internet and the reading of a couple of newly purchased books has shone a glimmer of light on the subject of the sibyls. This research is not something I want to go into in depth at the moment, but I will return to it in future articles. The books were obscure and the Internet articles only a little less so, but in the course of the voyage into Greek and Roman mythology and its relationship with the Christian church of that period, I encountered The Angel Musicians and The Angel Singers. Here, too, I was woefully ignorant, and I found that the religious and artistic arguments surrounding them are not easy to understand – if, indeed, they are understandable at all under the modern norms of logic. It seems that they

Looking through my photo archive, I found that, in the course of visiting churches in the past 10–15 years, I had encountered other wall paintings of The Sibyls (Les Sibylles, in French), and also of The Angel Musicians (Les Anges Musiciens). I have now documented the location of various churches with examples of these artworks in stone, in wood and as wall and ceiling paintings. And so began the idea of further investigating, photographing, obtaining permission for publication on, and writing about these obscure figures that were an important church symbology for a while in certain areas of France (and I suppose in other countries as well). I shall be writing in greater detail about both The Sibyls and The Angel Musicians in later issues of The DSM, so here, you will find only a couple of photos of sibyls to be found in the Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-la-Sède in Saint-Lizier and in the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Saint-Bertrand-deComminges, as well as a couple of angel musicians I found in my photo archive.

The Vineyard Guys It’s April On The Vineyard by R}B]u.ÉovSÉÉMMR}v

arch has brought a few visitors to the vineyard, some to stay and some to visit and buy wine and as the season progresses we hope to see those numbers grow. So if you are thinking about a few days away or are close enough for a day trip to visit us and this beautiful area you will receive a warm welcome here at Clos Vieux Rochers. Getting an excuse to take a break from the vines and chat with guests and show visitors our property is always enjoyed as sharing what we have is part of the love of being in this amazing region of France.

Everything has been bursting into life over the past month, the growing season really has begun as we spring forward through one of the best seasons. We have pruned, finished repairs and replacement of the posts and wires, tied the vine down and now the buds have burst and they need to be checked and if there are too many, picked off. These issues have been disastrous to many vineyards over the past few years and when the work and costs are the same, or rising under current conditions, with 50% loss of harvest you can imagine this can be critical for many, if not all, wine producers. Buying wine in France, especially the Bordeaux region, can be much more fun than many other counties as you can visit the producers and events that give you the opportunity to try different wines and find out about them. Wine shouldn’t be just an alcoholic drink that we grab from the supermarché, though this in itself is not a bad thing and we all appreciate the convenience of doing so occasionally. Some wine offered in retail stores have no back story, with the label often not relating to an actual property, but a little research or by chatting with the person in charge of the wine department can unveil something different. There is one thing you can’t beat and that is the joy of visiting an actual vineyard that grows the grape, makes and bottles their own wine. It gives you the chance to taste it on site, learn about the producer and educate yourself about their process. I would like to tell you that every vineyard that offers “Vente Directe” will give you more than just a degustation and sell you wine but that is not the case. A visit to us, though, will include a full tour and tasting if you book one. Knowing more about the contents of your bottle makes the experience of drinking it more enjoyable. When you take a bottle of Clos Vieux Rochers to friends for dinner after visiting our vineyard and you are asked “oh where’s the wine from?” you can tell them and share the back story of our vineyard that you have visited and where you bought our wine. There are many wine listing and review web sites available for wine lovers to explore, full of useful, or useless,

information according to who has written the review. They can be a good tool for researching that bottle of wine you may have bought in a restaurant last night, picked up in a wine shop or been given as a gift. One thing to be careful of is that many wine sites rely on the general public for much of their information and therefore it can be less than accurate. Pricing of wines listed is often confusing as one reviewer may have bought the wine from a restaurant and another from the vineyard, so you are given an average price that does not relate to the real price of a bottle. Our advice ... always check the vineyards own site for details of a wine that takes your fancy.

Easter and Easter Treats ….. Here are a few ideas .….Donna Easy Hot Cross Buns 500g plain flour ½ tsp dried yeast Handful of raisins ¼ tsp mixed spice 50g marzipan 1 tbsp granulated sugar

Mini Easter Egg Martini And of course, my page is not complete without a themed cocktail. Enjoy 25g Cadbury's Mini Eggs 1 tsp honey 25ml crème de cacao 25ml Baileys 50ml vodka Ice Crush the Mini Eggs in a pestle and mortar then tip onto a small plate. Brush the rim of a martini glass with a little of the honey using a pastry brush then dip the glass into the crushed Mini Eggs to stick them on. Pop the glass in the fridge until you need it. Pour the crème de cacao, Baileys and vodka into a cocktail shaker with a handful of ice and shake until the outside of the shaker feels really cold. Strain into your prepared glass and serve.

Make a simple Vanilla Sponge cake batter (recipe here) baked in cupcake cases and once cooled get everyone to decorate them. Maybe a little prize for the best cupcake design.

Put flour in a large bowl and add the yeast, raisins, mixed spice and 350ml water. Stir to a soft dough, cover with a tea towel and leave to rise for 3 hrs at room temperature, by which time the dough will have expanded and become smoother in appearance.

•

Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 6. Butter a 12-hole muffin tin. Divide the dough into 12 and shape each portion into a neat ball on a floured work surface. Drop each ball into a muffin hole. Bake for 20 mins.

•

Easter Cupcakes for Everyone to enjoy

Roll out the marzipan and cut it into 0.5cm-wide strips to make the crosses for the buns. Mix the sugar with 2 tbsp water and leave to dissolve. When the buns are cooked, take them out of the oven and carefully lay a cross made from two marzipan strips on top of each and put them back in the oven for 5 mins. Take the buns out, brush with the sugar water and leave to cool.

175g Butter 175g SR flour. 175g Caster sugar. 5 tsp Baking powder. 3 large eggs. 0.5 tsp vanilla extract. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. • Add all ingredients into a mixing bowl and beat until you have a nice and smooth batter. • Using an ice cream scoop, place one scoop into each cupcake case. • Place into the oven for around 17 minutes until lightly brown. Once cool its time to decorate them. To decorate use a Buttercream mixture which can be adapted by adding any food colouring you prefer: 600g Icing sugar 300g Butter Try adding a spoonful of Mascapone Cream which will give your icing a creamier texture and taste.
