Letter from the Chancellor Summary of Financials Annual Giving International Society Current Parent Annual Giving Class of 2008 Senior Gift Alumni Annual Giving Alumni Parents and Friends Annual Giving International Auction and Gala In-kind Donors and Volunteers Parents Association Trustees
From the Chancellor
Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends of Dwight, As you all know, this year has been like no other. From September through June, we weathered the economic roller coaster and, like most other educational institutions, wondered how we would fare by year end. It has been incredibly heartening to see that support for The Dwight School Foundation continues to grow and, remarkably, we ended the year with both a record number of donors and a record total of giving dollars. The Foundation’s Annual Fund Committee, under the leadership of Trustee Susan Kessler (Stephen ’10), Audrey Zinman (Emily ’11) and Caren Edler (Mari, W3s) raised $1,147,781 from 544 donors. Part of this total came from the Senior Committee, co-chaired by Devon Fredericks (Oliver Zabar ’09) and Liz Schiff (Brian Kaufman ’09 and Jacob ’10), which raised $201,885 and, among other things, enabled us to renovate the 89th Street rooftop. Another part came
from a record 92 alumni donors thanks to the efforts of Alumni Council member Blain Namm ’97 and a strong team of alumni volunteers. Our Spring Benefit Committee co-chairs Jane McEvoy-Petrycki (Mac ’11), Susan Kempler (Jeffrey ’11), and Annie Sigal Medina ’93 organized a wonderful auction at The Prince George Ballroom that raised an additional $316,212 to support our programs. Finally, thanks to the efforts of Trustee Richard Zinman, Dwight also received $1,415,333 in capital gifts, including funds to help make the brownstone renovation a reality. As each year more of our constituents donate their dollars, time, and other resources to strengthening the School, we gain more momentum in our efforts to provide a world-class education where children learn to use their “spark of genius” to build a better world. Thank you for your continued support on this wonderful journey. Fondly,
Stephen Spahn, Chancellor

Arthur Samuels There is nothing quite like a Dwight classroom. The students’ collective experiences and vantage points could not be more diverse. As a teacher, I encourage them to find their inner strengths and use them to make the world a better place.
4
Luz Giraldo I love the open-mindedness and freedom given to Dwight students and teachers. In true IB fashion, they take risks and experience adventures, which has inspired me to continue my teaching career at Dwight.

Spring Benefit One of the highlights of the school year is always the entertaining Spring Benefit and Auction, thanks to the months of hard work of the Spring Benefit Committee. This year’s event was held in the beautiful Prince George Ballroom, courtesy of Vincent and Maria Pascal (Lukas ’10), Christian Pascal ’97, and Michael Weinstein (Sam ’12) of ARK Restaurants Corp. The evening netted $316,212 to further the mission of Dwight and Woodside. The Dwight School Foundation 2009 Spring Benefit Committee Honorary Chairpersons

I have worn several hats at Dwight, and each has presented challenges and opportunities, but most of all I have seen Dwight grow in stature from an excellent school to a unique educational institution.
Evan Flamenbaum I know of no other place other than Dwight that would have allowed me simultaneously to develop teaching, administrative, and clinical skills, enabling me to help kids function better inside and out of school.

Barry Gragg My favorite thing about Dwight is the people: the administration and chairs of other departments, the faculty, the communication and development staff, the office staff, the custodians, parents and, of course, the students. It is a pleasure working with all the diverse members of the Dwight community toward a common goal.
49
Sandra Darzy I love the feeling of family that comes from a nurturing environment like Dwight. I truly believe we have the best faculty, who care about the students and each other.

Mary Abdullah What I appreciate most about Dwight is the diversity of the entire community, from students and parents to faculty. I have also loved the opportunity to teach German at all levels, including the IB Diploma classes.

CHOCOLATE/MAGAZINE FUNDRAISERS — Students sell chocolates, related gift items, and magazine subscriptions to raise money for the PA. The School earns 50% of the cost of every item sold. Parents are needed to assist with promoting the fundraiser throughout the fall and organizing and facilitating giftwrap pick-up in November. We offer Sally Foster items online with home delivery as well.
SAFETY PATROL — The PA organizes and oversees an after-school Parent Safety Patrol to increase street safety for students as they make their way home from school each day. By taking an active role in this program parents help make the entire school community a safer and more enjoyable place. In addition to protecting school children on their way home from school, this program allows patrollers to get to know fellow parents. Safety Patrol is a valuable service to our school.

BENTLEY HOUSE THANKSGIVING BASKET EVENT — Each November, Bentley House students gather to prepare Thanksgiving Dinner baskets for families who cannot afford a special holiday meal. Parents are needed on the day of the event to supervise the preparation of the baskets.
SCHOOL UNIFORM SALE DAY — Parents are asked to donate their children’s outgrown and gently used uniforms so that they may be re-sold to Dwight families at a very nominal charge. The PA needs volunteers to sort clothing and staff the sales.
THE BOOK FAIR — The annual Book Fair, which is held at the Barnes & Noble Superstore on Broadway and 86th Street is an important school-wide event that helps us raise money, provide books for our library and classrooms, and buy gifts for family, friends, and ourselves. The Dwight School Foundation’s mission is to bring additional resources to The Dwight School and its Woodside Preschool to ensure the highest quality education possible. In June, Trustee Chair Susan Kessler generously hosted a reception at The Lotos Club to acknowledge the following groups who play a critical role in supporting this mission: School Governors and Foundation Trustees advise and work in conjunction with the Chancellor to think critically about the future of the School and the resources needed to implement its Strategic Plan. The Annual Fund Committee solicits gifts from all members of the Dwight community to provide support for student financial aid, faculty professional development, and other items which will enrich the experience at Dwight and Woodside, above and beyond what is covered by tuition and fees. The Senior Gift Committee solicits Annual Fund gifts from 12th grade families and earmarks the funds for key items they have chosen as a legacy gift to improve the School. The Spring Benefit Committee plans and hosts a wonderful community event, for which it solicits in-kind and monetary donations to raise dollars to supplement the Annual Fund. The Dwight and Woodside Parents Associations welcome and connect parents to the community, promote volunteerism, encourage attendance at school events, and help address parent concerns to support faculty and build community spirit.

The Alumni Council and Class Representatives help identify and promote meaningful ways for graduates to get involved with the School and stay connected with each other.
