Letter from The Dwight School Foundation Board Chair
Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends of Dwight, Serving as a trustee of The Dwight School Foundation is a privilege and I’m proud to stand alongside those who give their time and resources to support the Foundation — all of you whose generosity makes a difference in the lives of students every day. Thanks to your contributions to the Annual Fund, the Foundation provided 43 percent of all student financial aid awarded and 90 professional development grants to faculty who bring the latest teaching strategies back to campus to benefit all students.
Susan Kessler
Additionally, the Foundation funded innovation grants for students developing their own projects in Dwight’s Spark Tank, including five $2,500 college scholarships to those who reached the final launch stage. I want to thank Dave Lindsey (David ’18, Maggie ’19, JackieRay ’21), Chair of the Spark Tank Committee, and his fellow members for nurturing young entrepreneurs in Dwight’s incubator, which has continued to garner media attention in its second year. During our Spring Benefit, we celebrated Dwight’s unwavering commitment to igniting the spark of genius in all of our children and to preparing them for bright futures that await them. The festive evening brought our community together and netted over $350,000 — 21% more than last year. We owe this success to the hard work and dedication of our Spring Benefit Committee, co-chaired by Lorena Matus Castellanos (Regina ’19, Luis Fernando ’21, Mateo ’28) and Suraya Khan (Yasmin ’29). We thank them and all the Foundation volunteers who helped this year: The Board

of Trustees; the Annual Fund Committee, co-chaired by Kim Saperstein ’92 (Aaron ’17, Benno ’19, Lexi ’21 Colodne) and Julie Stratopoulos (Ava ’25, Kira ’27); the Senior Gift Committee, chaired by Rachel Bardhan (Hrishi ’17, Anish ’20, Anoushna ’22); the Alumni Council, chaired by Peter Timmins ’90; and the Parents Association, headed by Meridith Hill, grades 1-12 (Tabitha ’24, Cooper ’27, Austin ’27) and Laura Charecky, 2s-K (Alex ’27, Evie ’30). Dwight is distinguished from other independent schools in New York in numerous ways, including its culture of innovation, dedication to personalized learning, and status as a global standard-bearer in education. Moreover, Dwight is simply unparalleled in its stability and consistency under Chancellor Stephen Spahn’s visionary leadership. As the longest-serving head of school in the U.S., he has devoted himself to mentoring generations of graduates, including my own two sons, and to breaking ground in education over the last 50 years. Chancellor Spahn, together with Vice Chancellor Blake Spahn and Head of School Dianne Drew, looks to the future with exciting and bold plans for all of our children. I know that Dwight, too, has a very bright future. On behalf of the entire Board, thank you for your continued support. Letter from the Chancellor and Head of School
Scene Night, and again throughout the year, as the space was transformed for a range of productions, illustrating how unique and flexible the space is. During the second year of Spark Tank, our incubator designed to nurture student innovation, entrepreneurship, and leadership skills beyond the classroom, students continued to inspire us with their innovative thinking. Since launching, 90 students have brought novel ideas for businesses, non-profits, and products to Spark Tank for guidance, mentorship, and funding from The Dwight School Foundation. During 2016-17, the Spark Tank Committee, chaired by Dave Lindsey (David ’18, Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends of Dwight, Maggie ’19, JackieRay ’21) awarded over $47,000 Looking back over the past year — Dwight’s 145th in grants, including five $2,500 college scholarships. — we take great pride in our School’s legacy of We thank all the Committee members for dediexcellence and long-standing commitment to cating their time and expertise to supporting our igniting the spark of genius in every child. would not otherwise be able to afford tuition; innovation grants for Spark Tank participants; and faculty professional development, which nourishes an ongoing quest for knowledge that directly benefits students in the classroom. On behalf of our faculty and students — beneficiaries of the Foundation’s generosity — we thank the Foundation and its Board of Trustees, Chair Susan Kessler, and all the Board Committee chairs and members who devote their time and energies to raising funds throughout the year. In the pages that follow, you’ll read about our community’s stellar support of the Annual Fund, Spring Benefit, and Capital projects, totaling more than $2.4 million. The Student Lounge named in honor of the Class of 2017 In recognition of the senior class families and the effort of the Senior Gift Chair, who raised over $265,000 for The Dwight School Foundation’s Annual Fund, Dwight’s Student Lounge will be dedicated in honor of the Class of 2017. A plaque commemorating the Class of 2017 will be installed in the Student Lounge — a warm and modern gathering place for students — as a perpetual reminder of their unique impact on Dwight.

Spring Benefit A highlight from this school year was The Dwight School Foundation’s Spring Benefit, held at Edison Ballroom. More than 430 members of the community came together to support Dwight, netting over $350,000 for student financial aid, faculty professional development, and Spark Tank innovation grants. The elegant evening included a sit-down dinner, DJ, dancing, and a video showcasing students.

The Dwight School Foundation In-Kind Donors and Volunteers
We would like to acknowledge the following groups that play a critical role in supporting The Dwight School Foundation’s efforts: The Dwight School Foundation Trustees advise and work in conjunction with the Chancellor,
Head of School, and the Foundation’s Advancement Office to think critically about how Foundation resources can positively impact the lives of Dwight students and faculty. The Annual Fund Committee solicits gifts from members of the Dwight community to provide support for student financial aid and innovation grants, and faculty professional development. The Senior Gift Committee solicits Annual Fund gifts from twelfth grade families and helps
identify spaces or items to be named in honor of the graduating class. The Spark Tank Committee advises, mentors, and approves funding for K-12 student projects. The Spring Benefit Committee organizes and promotes the Foundation’s largest community event. The Parents Association Executive Committee works closely with the Foundation to promote Foundation initiatives within the parent body. The PA President is an ex-officio member of the Foundation Board of Trustees. The Alumni Council and Class Representatives help identify and promote meaningful ways for graduates to get involved with the School and stay connected with each other. The Alumni Council President is an ex-officio member of the Foundation Board of Trustees.

Letter from the Vice Chancellor
their success. When students dive into the Spark Tank incubator with unbridled enthusiasm and ingenuity, we see their problem-solving, business, and leadership skills develop right before our eyes. Their progress to date has been remarkable; their ideas even more inspiring. We look forward to seeing what our students bring to Spark Tank next year.
Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends of Dwight, This Annual Report highlights a year of great accomplishment by The Dwight School Foundation, our School, and the entire Dwight family. We can all be proud of our students for excelling in numerous pursuits across campus and in unique programs such as Spark Tank, which has become one of Dwight’s “calling cards.” Thanks to the Foundation and the dedicated Spark Tank Committee, our young entrepreneurs have the opportunity to develop projects of their own imagining, seek guidance from mentors, and receive grants that fuel

With students at the epicenter of everything we do and innovation woven into Dwight’s DNA, we also look ahead with great anticipation to the opening of the new brownstone at 21 West 88th Street in the fall of 2018. Over the next twelve months, as we expand our urban campus and design state-ofthe-art spaces in which to unleash student creativity as never before, we will share more exciting details with you in the months to come. As our School continues to advance and prepare graduates to meet 21st-century global challenges, we remain ever-grateful to The Dwight School Foundation for its extraordinary support of our mission and our community.
We are thankful to the Foundation for providing: financial aid, enabling gifted and talented students to access a world-class Dwight education; Spark Tank innovation grants, nurturing our students’ entrepreneurial skills; and professional development, empowering faculty to bring cutting-edge knowledge back to the classroom. We see how significant the Foundation’s impact is on every student, every day. We are incredibly grateful to the members of the Foundation’s newly launched loyalty club for their remarkable history of ongoing support. Thank you to these loyal supporters for your steadfast commitment to our students. I hope that we can continue to count on all of you, members of the entire Dwight community, for years to come. Warm regards,
Blake Spahn Vice Chancellor, Dwight School

Ways to Give The Annual Fund is the Foundation’s most important fundraising effort and it is vital to the success of the school. There are many different ways you can make a contribution: Cash - All cash (including check and credit card) gifts are fully
tax-deductible. Gifts can be made using the attached pledge envelope or online at www.dwight.edu/givingtodwight.
Securities - A gift of appreciated stock, which has been held
for more than one year, allows you to avoid the capital gains tax on the appreciation. It also qualifies you for an income tax
charitable deduction based on the fair-market value of the stock on the date you make the gift.
Matching Gift - Matching gifts are an easy way to increase the
value of your contribution. If you and/or your spouse work for a
matching gift company, please obtain the necessary form from your personnel office and send it along with your gift to The Dwight School Foundation. Make a Pledge - Pledges can be fulfilled with one payment or multiple payments and simply need to be completed in full by June 30, 2018. AmazonSmile - Support The Dwight School Foundation every
time you shop, at no cost to you. Every eligible purchase you make on AmazonSmile will result in a 0.5% donation to The Dwight School Foundation. Make Dwight your charity of choice by going to smile.amazon.com today.
For questions about the Annual Fund, please contact Amy Tsoutsouras Hahn '05, Associate Director of Development, at 646.400.0314 or ahahn@dwight.edu.
The Dwight School Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit entity that was established in 1969 to provide financial aid to Dwight students and professional development grants to Dwight faculty. The Foundation expanded to include Spark Tank grants to students in 2015. This report gratefully acknowledges gifts between July 1, 2016, and June 30, 2017. Names are listed as requested by each donor on the annual fund envelope. Best efforts were made to ensure the accuracy of this report.
