EVERY STUDENT’S JOURNEY
Beginning in Preschool and Kindergarten with exposure to the fundamentals, and continuing through grade 12, with deeper learning in history, theory, and technique, students explore genres, master skills, and develop their passions in the visual and performing arts through the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum. The arts play a major role in our students’ IB journey and have long been part of our School’s legacy. Alumni include Truman Capote, Roy Lichtenstein, Hal Prince, Vin Diesel, Antonio Campos, Julian Casablancas and Fabrizio Moretti of The Strokes, Yara Shahidi, and many other accomplished actors, directors, producers, writers, musicians, composers, painters, photographers, and designers.

WORLDCLASS VENUES
Dwight students exhibit their own artworks on campus, and in festivals and competitions. They also have opportunities to perform in some extraordinary spaces, including Carnegie Hall, Symphony Space, Shanghai Concert Hall, and off-Broadway theaters, as well as in our own Performing Arts Center (PAC). Dwight’s PAC features a black-box theater with professional theatrical LED fixtures and a state-ofthe-art music recording studio.

AND THROUGHOUT NEW YORK CITY Dwight — the first school in the U.S. and the Americas to offer the comprehensive IB — leads the way in teaching the arts within a global context. Students are exposed to artistic traditions and aesthetic expressions of other cultures; and learn how to appreciate works of art as discerning observers, listeners, and performers. Students visit an extensive range of galleries, museums, studios, theaters, and performance venues in one of the world’s leading cultural hubs: New York City. Experiencing a diverse range of arts as consumers and audience members deepens students’ understanding, provides opportunities for critical analysis, and stimulates their own imaginations. Through Dwight’s global network of schools in New York, London, Seoul, Shanghai, Dubai, and online, students have unprecedented opportunities to participate in virtual and in-person cross-campus artistic collaborations, including our annual music festival.

Lining the walls of Dwight’s campus are over 200 pieces of art, ranging from Goya etchings, Audubon prints, and antique maps, to Tibetan thangkas, African masks, and much more in every medium. In both Middle and Upper Schools, learning continues to be inquiry-driven, encouraging students to question how they, as consumers and makers of art, can better understand the complexities of the world in which they live. Through deeper critical and historical studies of the art world, students investigate the relationships among artists, their artworks, and audiences from varying cultural, political, historical, and social perspectives. With some of the richest artistic resources available anywhere, New York City offers our students an amazing array of museums and galleries in which to study and experience art. At all levels of learning, students are provided with opportunities to make artworks across a wide range of traditional and contemporary expressive forms. They create art reflective of historical conventions, as well as explore new and innovative styles, methods, and media. As they acquire skills for art-making — sensory, tactile, manipulative, and technical — students see the importance of how meaning is created and represented in their own work and begin to develop their personal styles and expressive voices.

In our after-school program, Art Spark, students passionate about visual arts delve deeper, either creating works of their own or as part of collaborative projects. DIGITAL MEDIA AND FILM Beginning in Upper School, students learn about the power of photographic and moving images to communicate ideas and to tell stories that transcend boundaries, reflecting and connecting deeply with the human experience. Classes are designed to educate students about the ever-changing digital world and to provide them with hands-on experience using industry-standard software and equipment. Learning and making takes place in Dwight’s digital media studio as well as in nearby outdoor spaces like Central Park. These classes emphasize collaboration, creative exploration, and innovation, challenging students to develop critical thinking, reflective analysis, and the imaginative synthesis required to communicate through digital media and film.

MUSIC The music journey at Dwight is a continuous learning process sparked by studentdriven inquiry. As with the visual arts, music education begins with fundamental building blocks in Preschool and Kindergarten. Students are exposed to a variety of instruments, rhythms, and songs in the music classroom, where they discover that music is a language. Kindergarteners start learning how to sight-read, as well as how to improvise and begin expressing themselves confidently through movement with music.

In Lower School, musical activities continue to connect with IB transdisciplinary themes and units of inquiry. Through that prism, students start to learn basic principles of music notation, sight-singing, and two- and three-part harmonies. They explore and play a variety of world and classical instruments, and perform in solo and ensemble settings. So, too, do they learn how to work collaboratively while using various music technologies, as they express their own ideas based on musical genres, styles, and history.
Lower School students also have the exceptional opportunity to perform alongside older students from across Dwight’s global campuses at Carnegie Hall.
As they enter Middle School, students continue to expand their knowledge and skills in music theory, develop ear-training skills, learn about the form and structure of music, and organize their own groups to compose and perform original pieces. Enriching what they learn in the classroom, students can choose from a range of after-school programs, including Dwight’s Music Conservatory, where professionals teach private lessons in: violin, viola, cello, double bass, harp, flute, clarinet, oboe, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar, percussion, drum kit, voice, and piano. Additionally, students can learn software applications for composing/songwriting, mixing, sequencing, and looping in our music recording studio.
EXTRACURRICULARS AND CONSERVATORY CLASSES
In Upper School, students study advanced music theory, including tonal and chromatic harmony, four-part voice writing, and rhythmic analysis. They also hone advanced skills in traditional and digital composition, using multiple software programs to create performance-ready music in a variety of styles and formats. Units throughout Upper School music include a focus on reading and analyzing scores, creating music for film and television, and further developing instrumental and/or vocal skills. Additionally, students deepen their understanding of non-Western musical cultures and traditions, and perform in solo and group recitals.

Beginning with free movement in Preschool and Kindergarten music classes, students progress to dance classes in second grade focusing on creative movement connected to academic subjects. They develop social and communication skills by creating dances through collaboration. Students also enhance their movement vocabulary through improvisation; and by responding to music, poetry, visual stimuli, spatial ideas, and dramatic themes. In Middle School, students can continue developing expressive movement skills by participating in after-school theater. They, along with Upper School students, have opportunities to work with a resident professional choreographer and can create their own dances for on-campus performances. Additionally, dancers may perform in Upper School musicals.

Throughout history, human beings have enacted stories to share our experiences and expand how we understand the world. At Dwight, theater students work through IB units of inquiry to explore the range of what it is to be human by stepping into the shoes of other people and expressing their own unique experiences. For students from Pre-K to grade 5, learning through dramatic play is an integral part of the curriculum. They enact stories, role play, and let their imaginations soar. Beginning in Middle School, students create theatrical worlds through acting, designing, directing, and playwriting. So, too, in the role of audience, students consider how enacted stories shape their worldview. Learning focuses on becoming comfortable with taking risks, storytelling through performance, peer feedback, and collaborating on a shared vision.

In Upper School, students expand their understanding, skills, and experience by studying, creating, and attending performances. In grades 9 and 10, they explore a range of theatrical forms and create original work. Essential to the artform is communicating with an audience, so to truly understand creating theater students are encouraged to step outside the classroom to perform curricular work in Scene Nights. In grades 11 and 12, students become theater artists in their own right. They study performance practice, across cultures, through the lenses of theater theorists, and by creating their own work inspired by their studies. Theater practice at this level emphasizes not only the “how,” but also the “why” of communicating. The culmination of student work is performing pieces they create individually and collaboratively; they are responsible for all elements, including staging and design.

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM Extracurricular opportunities in theater abound. Students can participate in productions after school as performers, directors, designers, and technicians guided by working professionals in Dwight’s black box theater and off-Broadway theaters. They can also receive intensive training in acting techniques, including on-camera work with current casting directors, in Dwight’s Master Theater Program. This program mirrors those at the college level, but is designed specifically for high school students who have shown drive.
